Speaker 1 (00:09):
How you doing. What's up? Good afternoon, I'm ard. This
is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank you so much for listening.
You know where we are. It's it's Tuesday. We are
at Oakley Greens in Oakley, but you didn't know it
was in Oakley. By the way, it is stunning outside.
We've been here doing our show at Oakley Greens since
(00:30):
late August, and we've had some days where it's been
really hot, but we've been under cover. And then we
had a day last week that wasn't awesome. Today is
Today is when people say they want fall weather. I go,
really so you want clouds and you want leaves all
over the place so you can drink your pumpkin spice.
This is It's almost like summer outside. It is gorgeous.
(00:52):
We are in the outdoor area, which is undercover here
at Oakley Greens. All the sports, all the time, all
at Oakley Greens and a great plays to post up
for your Bengals watch parties, your college football watch parties.
It's a great place to bring the kids, unless you're
coming after nine o'clock on Friday or Saturday and then
it's well it's kid free, but I mean you're not
(01:12):
bringing a six year old to Oakley Greens anyway at
ten o'clock on a Saturday night. So dog friendly, which
is important. And the staff here is awesome, including our
friend Lauren, who just is the greatest bartender maybe of
all time. We are here until six o'clock and if
you're getting off work, do your happy hour here. We've
got cabanas, cabana rentals. In fact, I think it looks
(01:35):
like they're setting up some sort of shin dig and
one of the cabanas over there. It is my goal
at some point here, soon before the weather really turns,
to rent a cabana and just enjoy it by myself,
not invite anybody. Just sit in the cabana for a
few hours and think about life. And this is a
great place to do that. Oakley Greens right here, very
close to I seventy one. We love the staff here.
(01:56):
They are so good to us and we can't thank
them enough for hosting this every single Tuesday. Today is
a little bit of a different Tuesday. For years, we've
had our guy Paul Danner Junior on the show for
the first hour every Tuesday, but when the Bengals play
on Thursday, today is a big, heavy workday for the
folks who cover the team, and so Paul's gonna be
with us on the phone from the venue originally known
(02:17):
as Paul Brown Stadium a little bit after four o'clock.
We're working around his schedule today, So no Paul, just
because he's got to do his job instead of humoring
me and answering my dumb questions. Paul. In the four
o'clock hour, you'll hear from Joe Flacco and Jamar Chase,
we think both a little bit later on this hour
as well, and our guy Sean sayat the Stats and
(02:38):
Scheme newsletter, which is a must. He joins us at
five twenty. Full show rundowns available on Twitter at Moeger
thanks to Shareffacts credit Union. We have a lot to
get to today, some college football a little bit later on,
some Scott Sadderfield a little bit later on as well.
James Rapine was with me yesterday for the Football Show
(03:00):
I think that's what I'm gonna call it, the Football Show,
and we talked about the Bengals from a number of
different vantage points. I have been accused not by many
but by some of celebrating a moral victory because the
Bengals didn't get blown out against the Packers. They covered
the spread for what it's worth, and they demonstrated a
(03:23):
level of proficiency competency, you might argue, in the second
half of that game against Green Bay Packers. I don't
believe in moral victories, not in professional sports. I don't
believe in moral victories. I do believe in context. On
the road, as fourteen and a half point underdogs with
(03:45):
a quarterback who just joined the team on Tuesday, they
were not winning that football game. You knew that, and
I knew that, even in this era where folks love
to stand out because of their crazy hot take, I
couldn't find the soul who was like the person raising
their hand going, hey, actually, you know what I think
is gonna happen. They're gonna go to lambeau Field, play
(04:07):
a team coming off a bye and with with Joe Flacco,
They're going to win that football game. I found no
one who said that, And if someone said that to you,
they really didn't believe it. In that set of circumstances,
I gave them zero chance of winning. It's not the
first time, but it's one of the few times here
in recent vintage. Right fourteen and a half point dogs
(04:28):
on the road. Quarterback just got the gig on Tuesday,
just got in the practice field with his teammates. On Wednesday.
They were not winning. And so if you acknowledge that,
and I did, If you acknowledge that, then I think
you were gonna have to look at that game against
Green Bay through a different lens than do they win
or do they lose? And you know, let's face it,
(04:49):
it's the NFL, right, That's at the end of the day,
that's all we care about. Does your favorite team win?
Does your favorite team lose? There are a lot of
folks who might not listen to shows like this because
they don't care how the sausage gets made. They here,
do you win? Do you lose? And all the other
details are totally irrelevant, And that's okay. But I think
if you acknowledged at least the unlikelihood of them winning
(05:11):
on Sunday, you had to watch that game through a
different lens than win or lose. I did, and I
said on the show yesterday, I viewed that game like
I would a preseason game. I viewed preseason games as
all right, can you get some productive work done that
it better enables you to have success once the real
games actually start. I viewed Sunday's game the exact same way.
(05:34):
Early on, it's probably gonna be kind of clunky. The quarterback,
as experienced and as accomplished as he is literally just
got there, barely knows his teammates, barely had any time
to practice. He Jamar Chase, was sick most of the week.
I think in Paul's story about the way this all
came together, Jamar said he had like twelve snaps with
Joe Flacco on the field because of illness. Chances are
(05:57):
in the first half was gonna look sort of disjointed.
It was gonna look sort of clunky.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
It was.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
It was gonna look like everybody was struggling to get
on the same page. But what you were hoping for
was as the game went on, you know, everybody would
achieve a level of comfort with each other and the
operation would start to look better. And it did. By
the way. You know, we've watched the Bengals this year
with delay of game penalties. That wasn't the case. We've
watched the Bengals this year look like not everybody's on
(06:24):
the same page, or they're having a hard time getting
the play called. You didn't see those things on Sunday.
Much of that might speak to Joe Flacco's experience, Much
of that might be a damning indictment against Jake Browning.
But for me, and again, I went into that game
not unconcerned with the scoreboard, but believing they had almost
(06:45):
no chance to win. So, okay, can things get done
in that game that make you feel like on Thursday,
the Bengals have a better chance of competing? For me,
and maybe it's just me, the Joe Flacco era begins
on because the hope is and maybe the expectation is
all right, they built on some stuff in the second half.
(07:06):
There was a connection between Joe Flacco and Jamar Chase
that was very productive. Jamar Chase played an awesome game
on Sunday and it felt to me, And again, this
is not clinging to a moral victory. It's there were
things that happened in that game. Offensively, we'll get to
the defense here in a second. That offensively you felt
like they can build on. Will they or won't they?
(07:29):
I don't know. That remains to be seen. Obviously, the
Pittsburgh Steelers, in their defense, is going to have a
lot to say about that. That goes without saying. I
don't think any of us would be surprised if this offense,
which really hasn't been good all season long, regardless of
who the quarterback is, takes a step back. The Steelers
impose their will if they play from behind, and they
have to become one dimensional, and already one dimensional Bengals
(07:51):
offense is going to be even further behind the eight ball.
But we're not there yet. All I can do is
react to Sunday. I believe in context, the text is
the QB did just get there. As experienced as he is,
He's learning a lot of stuff. They're throwing a lot
at him in a very condensed amount of time. Like
NFL teams have stuff like voluntary workouts and throwing sessions
(08:15):
and OTAs and mini camps and training camp for a reason.
Like they have those things for a reason. It's it's
to get everybody on the same page. It's to learn
the offense. It's to develop some degree of familiarity with
your teammates within that offense or that defense. We just said,
screw all that with Joe Flacco gave him a crash. Course,
(08:36):
it was probably not going to be perfect. But could
it evolve and could things happen during that game that
you felt like they could build upon for Thursday. I
think the answer is unequivocally yes, and so that game
on Sunday, and I reserve the right to change my
mind based on Thursday's result. That game on Sunday, Yeah,
(08:58):
was a success because for me, it was a preseason game.
Preseason game results I've never been less interested in. I
don't bet on them, I don't care. I couldn't tell
you what the Bengals preseason record was this year. I
can barely tell you who they played like. I just
the outcome of the game doesn't matter. What the other
team does, doesn't matter. The Green Bay Packers themselves defensively
(09:20):
were almost non existent. I didn't care. It's can this
look somewhat cohesive as the game goes on enough that
they could use Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday to build
upon it and then go have a better chance to
win at home. Now, granted, this would be better if
(09:41):
they were playing on Sunday. It's another quick turnaround Joe
Flacco will have been a Bengal for all of nine
days by the time he and his teammates take the
field on Thursday. Time is of the essence. This is
not an easy team to play. It's not an easy
team to prepare for. There's not been this week that
chance for everybody to take their breath because the game
is going to be on Sunday, and so this is
(10:03):
not going to be easy and this can blow up
in their face, and maybe it does because the offensive
line isn't very good. Although I thought in the second half,
and Rahpeene said this yesterday, I thought the offensive line
in the second half of the game against Green Bay
it was all right. I was pretty good. Now, the
other part of this is what the Bengals did defensively,
And you know, I'm for a few weeks, I've been
(10:26):
done hearing about league average defense, and I have no
idea how they're gonna put pressure on quarterbacks of Trey
Hendrickson can't go. Shamar Stewart's going to be playing in
what his third career NFL game. I don't think they
have enough dudes to get stops. But I also don't
think on Thursday they're playing a Pittsburgh offense that's really
built to run away and hide. DK Metcalf is very good.
(10:47):
Aaron Rodgers is a Hall of Famer. I don't know
that I believe their offense can just run up and
down on the Bengals. We will see, but we knew
that going in, like we knew going into to Sunday
that if the Bengals defense needs to get stops, they can't,
because we saw it against Detroit, and we saw it
against Denver, and you know, we saw it. Although the
(11:09):
offense was far more complicit in the meltdown against Minnesota,
we saw it against the Vikings. That's not changing. What
was gonna have to change was something on offense, and
once they made that change, you were gonna need to
see something on offense that made you feel like, all right,
they can they can take this and build on. I
think that happened. That's not moral victory. That's applying context.
(11:30):
If you applied context, I don't think you were looking
at that game through the lens of it's only a
success if they win, and I think if you were,
then you were basically setting them up to fail. I
don't think offensively, at least the Bengals failed on Sunday,
and since that game was really only about their offense,
you're gonna not like this. I don't think the Bengals
(11:50):
themselves failed on Sunday. We are guests free until four o'clock.
Our phone lines are open. Five point three seven four
nine fifteen thirty and eight sixty six seven two three
seven seven six. I don't know, And you could tell
me what the issue with that take is. Like I
got this a lot on Sunday night because I tweeted
(12:11):
about it and we were, you know, tweeting about Victory
Cigars and our friends at OTR Premium Cigars where you know,
they did their victory cigar special because the Bengals covered
the spread. That's an entirely different conversation moral victories. That's
not where the conversation should go. Where the conversation should
go is was the second half of that game something
they can build upon? Or are they gonna run into
(12:34):
something in the Pittsburgh Steelers that doesn't allow them to
build upon what they did against Green Bay? Five point
three seven four nine fifteen thirty is our number? Eight
sixty six seven oh two three seven seven six works
as well, Paul Dayner Junior. Coming up at the top
of the hour, our guy Sean Sayad at five twenty.
We've got some UC football to get to a little
(12:55):
bit later on. The Bearcats are getting set to go
to Oklahoma State. Cincinnati, as a member of the twelve,
is a more than three touchdown favorite on the road. Now,
Oka State is dreadful. They've moved on from their coach,
They've moved on from their defensive coordinator. I understand, and
I'm not gonna say I haven't done this. I understand.
(13:17):
If in the back of your mind is what happened
last year when you see was five and two and
it felt like things were going in the right direction
and then everything completely melted down. I don't think that's
gonna happen this year. I'm not gonna tell you this
team's gonna run the table. I'm not gonna tell you
this team's gonna play in the Big Twelve championship game.
I do not believe that a collapse like last seasons
(13:41):
is in the offer. And I'll get to why coming
up here in just a bit. Ad Mulegger on Twitter.

Four minutes after three o'clock, This is ESPN fifteen to thirty.
We are broadcasted from Oakley Greens. We are here every
single Tuesday, and we thank them for having us. You
know Oakley Greens, they are they're they're owned by the
same folks that own Covington Yard. That is a sloppy
(15:04):
way of putting it. But you know the Bengals on
Thursday Night Football. It's an Amazon broadcast. So in town
you have Ryan Fitzpatrick who played for the Bengals in
two thousand and eight that was not a fun season.
And you have Andrew Whitworth. You may have heard he
used to play for the Bengals too. From six through
twenty sixteen, they'll both be in Cincinnati. In fact, Andrew
Whitworth is gonna be the ruler of the jungle, which
(15:27):
is kind of neat. That's that's big, that makes sense.
Future Hall of Famer, at least I think of future
Hall of Famer. They have a podcast together, Andrew Whitworth
and Ryan Fitzpatrick, The Fizz and Wit Show, and that
is gonna be done from Covington Yard. So go check
that out. The doors open up at five o'clock, live
(15:48):
show at seven point thirty. You get a chance to
meet Ryan Fitzpatrick, you get a chance to meet Andrew Whitworth.
Maybe other fun celebrity guests, maybe CHRISA. Thompson will be there.
That wouldn't be bad, or were Kirk Herbstreet and his dog.
I don't know Al Michael's former voice of the Reds.
Who knows who's gonna show up, but you should show
(16:08):
up Covington Yard. That's tomorrow, doors at five, live show
at seven thirty. Fits and Wit, So there you go.
I almost called it Fit and Whiz, which is an
entirely different type of podcast. Taren do you have for me?
Play this audio? This is Mike Mike Tomlin. Mike Tomlin's
the coach of the Steelers, and the chances are you
(16:31):
knew that. You know by the way, he's also had
never had a losing record. He's not having a losing
record so far this year. His team is four and
one and threatening to run away and hide in the
AFC North. This one viral yesterday. Here is what Mike
Tomlin had to say about the trade that sent Joe
Flacco from Cleveland to Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
You know, to be honest, it was shocking to me.
Speaker 8 (16:55):
Andrew Barry must be a lot smarter than me or us,
because it doesn't make sense to me to trade a
quarterback that you think enough of to make your opening
day starter to a division opponent that's hurting in that area.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
But that's just my personal feelings.
Speaker 1 (17:12):
So few things about this. Number One, Mike Tomlin went
out of his way to say, like, the Bengals did
the right thing, and I think most of us now
would agree that they did right. They needed an upgraded
quarterback from what they had. They wanted somebody who could
be a quick study, and Joe Flacco has I think
checks those boxes. Also the Cleveland Browns. The general manager
(17:33):
of the Cleveland Browns or any GM of any team
only has one responsibility and that's to his team. It's
like the same thing I say whenever you know a
coach or a manager will get yelled at for running
up the score, and it's like, no, man, the coach's
responsibility is to his team, not the other team, not
the feelings of the guys on the other team. So
if he thinks it's best for my team to keep
(17:55):
playing hard and play my starters and run my guys
out there and try to score as many points as possible,
that's fine. The GM of the Browns has one responsibility
and that's to his team, and he felt like it
was best for the Cleveland Browns to increase their draft
capital next year. Earlier in the draft, by trading Joe Flacco.
It's his prerogative. It's certainly within the rules. But Mike
(18:17):
Tomlin isn't wrong. And I'll direct you to hard knocks
last year, which was done, you know, the last six
seven weeks of the season, in season in the AFC North.
Mike Tomlin didn't want to do it. I'm sure most
of the people involved didn't want to do it, But
I didn't gather from watching that that Mike Tomlin like
(18:39):
buys into the rivalry aspect of the AFC North with
respect to his opponents. But like the AFC North rivalries
which we talked so much about all season long, I
think like Mike Tomlin believes, like, yeah, the Ravens are
huge rivals of ours, and the Bengals are huge rivals
of ours, and even the Browns are big Ryley the
(19:00):
Pittsburgh Steelers, they certainly are historically. I could understand from
that perspective, from the perspective of somebody who's like, yeah, man,
we're all rivals. We respect each other, but we hate
each other. I could understand their perspective looking at what
the Browns did, going what you're helping, You're you're helping
a team in this division, like, and the Browns did
(19:23):
now they had good reason to do so again they
they viewed the pick swap as a five for a
six that was involved here as beneficial to them. Joe
Flacco was maybe never gonna throw another pass for the
Cleveland Browns. If things went okay with Dylan Gabriel and
Shadora Sanders, maybe they were going to release them. Maybe
they were going to try to trade them, but didn't
(19:44):
think they could get that much back in return if
they waited until November fourth. So again they did what
is they believe is right by them. But yeah, like
my very first thought was, wait a minute, the Cleveland
Browns just gave a lifeline to a division opponent. If
(20:05):
you buy into hey, in this division, it's a little
bit different because there's legitimate hatred, like sports hatred, and
you don't help your rival, you don't help your rival up,
you don't give them a lifeline. I think there's a
lot of folks who said the exact same thing. I
know there are folks in Cleveland who said the exact
same thing. Why are we helping the Bengals? Like, all right,
(20:28):
in Cleveland, the season might be over, but why are
we giving the Bengals an opportunity to resuscitate their season?
Like Mike Tullan's perspective is one that I frankly shared.
Now again, I'm glad they did it because I don't
know what the plan would have been a quarterback without
Joe Flacco. Had the brown said we're not trading him
(20:50):
to Cincinnati, who knows what they would have done. I
literally would have taken any living, breathing human being that
wasn't Jake Browning. But sure you can't. You can't talk
about the rivalry aspect of this division and not understand
it when coach in it, who's coached in it for
his entire head coaching career, would go, wait a minute,
we were now helped. We're helping each other like we're
(21:14):
we're in season. This team is desperate, and we're going
to give them a boost. Because that was my first thought,
and I think that was the first thought of a
lot of people who rooted for the Cleveland Browns, like,
all right, our season may be tanked, we might not
have a chance of competing, but we're not going to
give the Bengals a chance to figure their season out.
And maybe they have Mike Tomlin, wasn't the Browns weren't wrong.
(21:38):
Bengals certainly weren't wrong, Mike Tomlin, as much as it
might pain me to say it not wrong either. Twenty
nine away from four o'clock sports headlines are coming up,
and I don't think the Bearcats are going to see
history get repeated. We'll get to that next on ESPN
fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.

Bengals are getting set for Thursday night football. They're hosting
(23:12):
the Pittsburgh Steelers at the venue originally known as Paul
Brown Stadium. The game is gonna be on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Here's a special treat Okay, Thursday, the pregame coverage will
begin at nine oh five. You will get a special simulcast.
Here's who You're gonna get a chance to listen to
me and Lance and Rocky together. I don't know when
(23:33):
the last time Lance and I, aside from we always
do the year end Show, the Year Interview, I don't
know the last time Lance and I were on at
the same time. So Thursday, big big day at iHeartMedia
and then you add to it, Rocky boyman, It's gonna
be wow, unreal three o'clock on Thursday, and I legitimately
(23:54):
am excited for it because I never see Lance. Not
only do I never like get a chance to be
on with him, I never see the guy. So that'll
be fun, and that'll be Thursday at three o'clock. The
official injury report is not yet out for the Bengals.
Today is going to be a pretty big day. Obviously
with the short week. We'll see if there's any movement
(24:14):
as it relates to Trey Hendrickson, and I get the
sense that they feel like Shamar Stewart is going to
be a full go. Also, the Bengals announced that Andrew
Whitworth is gonna be the ruler of the Jungle for
the game on Thursday night. That obviously makes a lot
of sense. Tonight in Milwaukee, it's a Game two of
the National League Championship Series. Blake Snell. Blake Snell pitched
(24:36):
Game one against the Reds and was terrific. He was
awesome last night. The TV announcers on TVs made the
comparison to Roy Halliday, the no hitter he threw against
the Reds in twenty ten. Blake Snell was that good
last night. Allowed one base runner and picked him off.
We also had the craziest double play I'd ever seen
(24:56):
in that game last night. The Dodgers win on game one.
Game two tonight in Milwaukee a little bit after eight o'clock.
It's a pause in the action, so to speak. And
the American League Championship Series between Seattle and Toronto, with
the Mariners holding a two nothing series lead, let me
just quickly ask this about the pos possibility of a
(25:18):
World Series between Seattle and Milwaukee. Now the Dodgers lead
the series, despite the fact that the Brewers had the
best record in baseball. I think most I think most
fans view LA as the favorite defending World Series champions
killers starting lineup. Although the Brewers beat them six times
all six games they played head to head. Milwaukee does
(25:39):
have home field advantage. I made a wager on Seattle
versus Milwaukee being the World Series matchup. It's obviously still alive.
Last year we had the Dodgers and Yankees, and the
big debate was is this good for baseball? This is
good for baseball?
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Right?
Speaker 1 (25:56):
My take was, like, dude, it's a World Series I
want to watch no matter what. When it was Arizona
versus Texas, I watched if it was Yankees Dodgers. I
watched Game one was memorable. Game four was memorable because
some dope down the right field line try to interfere
with a Mookie Bets ball. But the series itself wasn't awesome.
The games beyond Game one not really memorable for one series.
(26:19):
But you had a lot of folks who were like, no,
I don't want to see these big market behemos. I
don't want to see New York versus LA. Okay, will
you tune into Seattle versus Milwaukee? I will. Number One,
Brewers have never won a World Series, Mariners have never
won a World Series. Seattle's never been in a World Series.
Milwaukee hasn't been in one in forty three years. Like,
(26:40):
I think there's a lot interesting to that. I think
those are both two cool looking ballparks on TV. For
what it's worth, I they had two fun teams. Dan Wilson,
the Mariners manager, is a former Red Like, I think
there's there's a lot to that. I am looking forward
to the same people, however, who last year told us
they're turned off by big market New York versus LA
(27:01):
telling us that they're also turned off by small market
and reasonably anonymous Seattle versus Milwaukee. Now this can be
made a moot point if the Dodgers win the NLCS
and obviously got off to a good start last night.
But I said that a year ago, like, all right, fine,
you don't love big market New York versus LA. Did
you watch Arizona versus Texas? And again there are baseball
(27:24):
diehards for whom the answer is yes. But I'm I
feel like it's like a cottage industry among a lot
of sports fans to come up with an excuse to
not watch baseball instead of just saying, you know what,
not a big baseball fan, or if my team's not playing,
I don't watch a lot of baseball instead not watching
because the big market, or then this year, if it's
(27:47):
Seattle versus Milwaukee not watching because of the small market,
that's incredible analysis by me. We'll spend a little bit
more time on this later on. You see is getting
had to go on the road and play Oklahoma State
on Saturday. The Bearcats have a chance to achieve Bowl eligibility,
and I would be willing to bet that pretty much
(28:11):
nobody had them being in position to do that either
before they lost in Nebraska or after they lost in Nebraska.
Let's not kid ourselves. They're a fourth downstop against Kansas
away from losing that game. The performance against the UCF
offensively left a ton to be desired. This team is
(28:33):
if you know, somebody said to me yesterday, I'm getting
twenty twenty one vibes, and it's like, eh, I'd tap
the brakes just a little bit. But I also feel
like there are folks and understandably so who go. You
know what? Last year they were five and two and
we were starting to talk about, you know, Bowl eligibility
and then can they be a factor in the Big
twelve race? And the conference itself wasn't all that good,
(28:55):
and they went from five to two to five and seven,
finished outside looking at a ball picture and only amplified
the questions as to whether or not Scott Saderfield as
the guy. I don't think such a meltdowns in the
offing for one simple reason. I think the Bearcats have
more Big twelve players on their team. And like that
sounds obvious, they're a Big twelve school, but like nobody
(29:19):
wanted to acknowledge this year one and it's why I
gave Scott saderfield and would have given any coach a
pass for that first season. The leap that they were making.
While you could say, well, you know, you can go
buy players now, the leap that they were making from
the AA seed of the Big twelve, I think was
bigger than a lot of people were willing to admit.
(29:40):
And if you watch some of the games they played
down the stretch that first season, physically they were manhandled.
And the first time that I thought they were physically
manhandled was against Oklahoma State middle of that season on
a Saturday night crappy whether Oli Gordon was their lead
running back, terrific player. Oklahoma State on both lines just
pushed them around. West Virginia did later that season. Last year,
(30:04):
it wasn't as bad, but I didn't think they had
enough Big twelve athletes on the outside, which is to
a large degree why the offense kind of constricted over
those final five games this year. I think I was
talking about this with Tyson Vite, the defensive coordinator, today,
and we're going to air that interview in the pregame
show on Saturday. I feel like this is the season
(30:26):
where they have entered Big twelve play with big twelve
athletes everywhere. Now they're thin at corner and you know,
maybe they don't have a lot of NFL dudes, And
you know, I am. I read Heather Dnich's Bubble Watch
today on ESPN dot com, which has the Bearcats in it.
I do not want to get to ahead of myself
(30:47):
when it comes to this team and what they may
accomplish this year. But I think if you're going, you
know what, I'm a little bit wary because of what
happened last season. They were five and two and they
were playing well. I think it was fair to believe
that the lack of just big twelve athleticism and big
twelve size and physicality was going to catch up to them,
(31:09):
and it did. It certainly did offensively on the outside,
where I just think they're better. I think Caleb Goodie,
Cyrus Allen, I think those guys are better than Xavier
Henderson and the other wideouts they had last year. So
I don't necessarily believe the offense is going to regress
the way it did over the final five games. And
I feel like this season, especially on defense, especially in
(31:32):
the front six, that three, three, five, there's just more physicality,
more speed, more Big twelve dudes, and so I think
they're better equipped to contend. And now again, man, I'm
not gonna tell you that they're going to run the table.
I'm not yet prepared to talk about them playing in
the Big twelve Championship game. But I do think this
(31:54):
team is better equipped for sustainability this year for that
main reason. And I think as obvious as that sounds,
I think what a lot of us were reluctant to
do over those first two seasons was acknowledged that it
might take a while for UC to have the level
of athlete that they need in this league. This year,
(32:15):
they still might not have as many as Texas Tech does,
maybe they don't have as many as BYU does, and
maybe it's going to be a rude awakening when they
start playing better teams in the league. But I do
believe that they can just from a player versus player
personnel perspective, I think they can better match up with
pretty much everybody remaining on their schedule, including Oklahoma State,
(32:39):
who they're heavily favored to beat on Saturday thirteen away
from four o'clock. Paul Danner Junior is gonna join us
at the top of the hour. Where at Oakley Greens
in Oakley on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (32:49):

We are broadcasting from Oakley Greens, which you know, if
you if you have tickets to the Bennell Steelers game
on Thursday, by all means use them. But if you don't,
and you're like, well, I want to go somewhere and
watch the game, come to Oakley Greens. And there's so
many TVs here that I feel like, Oh, there's some
(33:50):
Steelers fans over there. Just go to the other side
of the bar. You won't even notice. So come to
Oakley Greens. Watch every game at Oakley Greens. Oakley Greens
is amazing, Oakley Greens. The bar staff here at Oakley
Greens has been just incredible, life changing and a credit
to this establishment. I've babbled long enough and we haven't
even been on for an hour. Mike, go the Floras
(34:13):
your as you're on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 11 (34:16):
Thank you, Ma.
Speaker 12 (34:17):
I hope you had a good weekend. Although it's soon
I lose track. Today I got the Bengals with five wins,
and I'll just leave it at that. Still got the
same old line, Still got the same d Now you
got an im mobile quarterback who can throw it, but
he's completely immobile. And I don't know how that helps
(34:39):
you that much.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
But the story is, don't I don't disagree with I
don't disagree with anything you said, but I will I
will say this. I thought, in the second half of
the game, the offensive line played pretty well. Is that
sustainable with this unit? You would go, you would be
silly to bet on that happening. But I do think
the offense if if Joe Laco can play behind the
(35:01):
same sort of past protection we saw as the game
went on, I think they'll be okay. But the overall
lack of faith in this team, Mike I cannot argue with.
Speaker 12 (35:12):
Yeah, I mean his realities reality, folks. And you need
to draft better too. You gotta get way more depth
to draft way more without Ques lost since I can remember.
But the real story was mister Blake snow last night
with one of the greatest Championship Series performances by a
pitcher in NL history. He was the crap.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
He was awesome. As good as he was in his
first two postseason starts, including Game one against the Reds,
he was even better last night. What did you think
about them not bringing him out for the ninth inning?
Speaker 12 (35:54):
Well, I wanted him to in my heart, but he was.
He was over one hundreds then and I can't I
just can't question Dave Robertson trying and makes me nervous
at all, you know who. And Sosaki had a little
bit of an off night because he's been lights out
coming out of that tent, but that might be gave
him trying in a.
Speaker 11 (36:11):
Little bit of a little bit.
Speaker 12 (36:13):
More confidence going into the next game. But but boy,
Yamamoto's going tonight another two point four nine ERA. So Milwaukee,
you better start hoping on your average Joe luck because
that's the only way you're going to beat this team.
Speaker 1 (36:29):
Yeah, you know, I thought the game last night. So
there was the crazy play where south Freelick goes back
to catch the ball, it hits the wall and it
goes into his glove and they end up turning it.
It was one of the craziest plays I've ever seen,
and so crowd's going nuts. Dave Roberts has questions by
the way they ruled it correctly, because the leftfield umpire,
(36:49):
you know, made the signal that the ball was not
caught on the fly. I thought the way Snell came
out the next inning and just sort of shut him
down and quieted the crowd, Like at that point, I
thought that might have been Milwaukee's chance right where it
felt like, Okay, the Dodgers have blown this bases loaded opportunity.
The crowd's going insane, and you know, maybe those things
(37:11):
matter less in baseball than in other sports. But he
quickly shut him down one two, three in the bottom half,
of the fourth and I just I felt at that point.
I certainly felt afterwards. I thought that was like the
biggest sequence of the game, right there beyond the bottom
of the ninth inning when when Trying got the last
out with the bases loaded.
Speaker 11 (37:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (37:31):
The thing about Blake is he looks so calm and
cool and collected. I don't think he broke a sweat.
That's the way it looked.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
Well, he walked to guy to load the bases, killing them.
He walked to guy to load the bases, and he
just sort of not adored his catcher to go, yeah,
I'm good, We're fine, and uh, yeah, it was a
fun game last night. It's a fun game last night.
I still think it's gonna be a really interesting series.
But obviously Paralta has to come up big for the
Brewers tonight.
Speaker 12 (38:00):
And he's been good at home, but he hadn't just
hadn't pitched that much. Yeah, but it was interesting that
and they made several comments about it with Snow kept
going to his note card like a quarterback does on
his wrist, and I've never I've never seen that with
a picture of.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
You, never before, Like every hitter hold his right.
Speaker 12 (38:20):
Card out he kept checking. Yeah, yeah, the next battery.
I never saw that before.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
I've I've never seen a picture go to that card
before every hitter. And he was at first he was
doing it, and he looked like he thought he was
doing something illegal, right, Like he was looking at it
in this like you'll see sometimes the camera will show
like an outfielder and he'll look at it just to see, Okay,
(38:46):
where should I be positioned. I've never seen a picture.
I've seen a picture reference the card before. I've never
seen a picture reference the card before every hitter, including
you know, the second and third time through the batting order.
Speaker 12 (39:01):
It was something else. I was hoping that you had
gotten to see that part just because you like unusual
and that was unusual.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
It was unusual, and I would imagine that since that
is legal, I would imagine why would why would other
pictures not do that? Right? Like? Why why why would
other pictures not take it? If you could take a
cheat sheet with you when you go take the test,
why wouldn't you bring the cheat sheet with you all
the time.
Speaker 12 (39:28):
Yeah, well, eventually they'll play outlaw, you know, but I'll
but they can't right now. But I'll tell you these
Mariners are fun, aren't they? Those Mariners are fun.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
Are fun, man, you know. I like Cal Raleigh, I
like Julio Rodriguez, I like Dan Wilson, I like Logan
Gilbert a lot Louis Castillo. Obviously, for them to do
what they did, play that fifteen inning game on Friday,
fly to Canada, fly to Eastern Canada, have playing problems
(39:57):
and come back less than forty eight hours later when
Game one and then take Game two the way they
did is is pretty cool. I am rooting for Seattle.
I will admit to you, Mike, that I am rooting
for the Brewers just because it thind be cool to
see a team that's never won it before. But you're right, man,
the Mariners are awesome. And I still think the NLCS
(40:18):
is gonna be a great series. We'll see I get
a run, man. Okay, thanks Moll, take care, you got
it coming up on four o'clock. Our friend Paul Dayner
Junior from the venue originally known as Paul Brown Stadium
is next word Oakley Greens here in Oakley. On ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station at the Thompson House, Footballers
(40:39):
entered this nation wide Keward on our website. Bank that's bank.
Speaker 13 (40:44):
Enter it now you've found Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (40:50):
All right, here we go. What's up. Good afternoon, I'm
going this is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank you for listening.
We're broadcasting from Oakley Greens, which we have. One of
the things we love about broadcast and from Oakley Greens
is we get a chance to know the staff, we
get a chance to know the people here, we get
a chance to learn about them. And boy, that just
happened during the break. I'm not sure how much any
(41:10):
of that is for air, but you know you could
take part in that if you come on out to
Oakley Greens. Typically on Tuesday, our friend Paul Danner Junior
from the Athletic and the Growlar podcast is here with
us at Oakley Greens. But the Bengals play on Thursday,
and so today is like the big heavy workday. The
players are available, the locker room is open. Paul's got
a right, he's got a podcast, and so he doesn't
(41:33):
have time to get here and hang out with me.
But because he's the best, still kind enough to give
us a few minutes on the phone. Hi, Paul, Hello, MO,
how are you? I?
Speaker 3 (41:42):
I gotta say that was very intriguing. I really wish
I was there to know what you are referencing. You
just learned about the find people at Oakley Greens before
I came on.
Speaker 1 (41:52):
When you're here next week, I'll give you a synopsis.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
Okay, good, good. I just I'm very intrigued.
Speaker 1 (42:00):
So is anything anything bigger, newsworthy happening down there we
need to know about?
Speaker 3 (42:07):
Well, maybe the absolute crossroads of the season is happening
in two days.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
If you're interested in that.
Speaker 3 (42:13):
That's a fairly important, fairly important game here. You don't
really expect to be saying those types of things this early,
but we're kind of accustomed to that around here lately,
aren't we are? We are late early around here pretty
consistently now, third year in a row we're dealing with this.
But it does feel like you either show you've got
(42:34):
some fight and you can find some semblance of offense
and defense and can deliver a blow to the Pittsburgh Steelers,
or the Pittsburgh Steelers are about to run away and
hide to the AFC North and you're not going to
have any stay in it.
Speaker 1 (42:49):
Yeah, this feels like game on versus game over. Three
and four, it's game on, and you get the mini
buy chance to breathe. The Jets are coming here, obviously
a winnable game, and we start to talk about the AFC,
maybe the AFC North Pittsburgh doesn't run away at hide
two and five, and it's who are they trading and
what can they get for Trey Hendrickson and how bad
(43:11):
might this get? Like three and four versus two and five,
The difference is more than one game.
Speaker 3 (43:17):
It, I mean, it's already on the verge of maybe
being too much when you just consider.
Speaker 2 (43:24):
The uphill path that this team has right now. I mean,
you're just there. They're not very good defensively.
Speaker 3 (43:29):
Their offense is this like construction project around Joe Flacco
getting up to speed here and you see some signs
of life in it, but this is you know, Joe
Burrow is not work walking through that door anytime soon.
And so the idea that they're just going to start
ripping off a long streak of wins and blow past
(43:51):
the Pittsburgh Steelers is just not reality. They're gonna have
to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. They're gonna have to hang
around and hope that that team starts to struggle a
bit and gain some momentum with Laco at quarterback. And
I just it felt like, I don't know how you
felt about it, moh, but to me, everything about Sunday
felt like half real game, half preseason game.
Speaker 14 (44:14):
Yes it was.
Speaker 2 (44:15):
It felt like it was a bridge to this Thursday.
Speaker 3 (44:18):
Like they needed Joe Flacco in there and playing that
game so that he could go beat Pittsburgh on Thursday.
And that was you know, and even you can talk
and we'll talk plenty about the Barrett Carter decision, it's
go go get him in there and see what he's
got and maybe he can help you a part of
the answer and he could have a game under his
(44:38):
belt when he.
Speaker 2 (44:39):
Goes to play Pittsburgh at home on Thursday.
Speaker 3 (44:42):
It's this recognition that this is where the path had
to be. It has to be through winning this game.
And it felt like everything about that was building towards
Thursday night in a game that they just frankly have
to have.
Speaker 1 (44:55):
Yeah. The only the only way I'll part with what
you just said is I don't think it was a
half preseason game. That was a full preseason game. I
was I'm not gonna say uninterested in the result. I
thought they had no chance of winning. To me, it
was can they do something offensively as that game begins
to evolve that makes me feel like, Okay, some seeds
(45:16):
have been planted for them to have future success. That
maybe ignores the fact that defensively they have all sorts
of issues. It may be ignores some of the changes
they're making on the fly in regards to who plays.
But I saw what I wanted to see. I expected
it to be not great in the first half. I
wanted it to be better in the second half. And
(45:37):
you pointed out like as the second half went on,
I wasn't thinking about the play clock. I wasn't thinking
about unnecessarily burning timeouts, delay of game penalties. I saw
competent offensive line play. I don't know how much of
that is sustainable, but I saw an offense that worked
and work again, this is not where we should be starting,
but this is this is where we are. It's week six, Okay,
(45:59):
it's the Browning thing didn't work. We're trying Flacco show
me something that makes me feel like this can work,
And over those final thirty minutes, I got what I
wanted to see at that point, didn't care about the result.
I will on Thursday.
Speaker 3 (46:13):
Absolutely, I think it looked functional. It looked like one
that could operate on time and under control, and looked
like it had a plan.
Speaker 2 (46:24):
And you know, like I just went something.
Speaker 3 (46:26):
As simple in the story I have up today of
just let's just look at how this team operated from
a you know, successful play standpoint on throws that come
out in two point five seconds or less. And it's unbelievable.
You know, Joe Blacko comes in and it's up around
sixty percent. Weeks one and two, it was up around
(46:49):
sixty percent. The three middle games with Jake Browning was
all the way down in the thirties and forties was
bad plays. It's not seeing things fastening up. It's not
finding those easy, successful, efficient plays that kept them ahead
of the six more often. And if there's one thing
that Joe did, he just came in and when he
knew what he was seeing and quickly got the ball
to somebody that could help him make a profit, and
(47:11):
it helped the whole offense work better. And it's just
it made it apparent that so much of what was
going wrong was a matter of just a quarterback that
didn't know what he was seeing and wasn't finding the
easy yards the layups that we've spent the last couple
of weeks talk about that they're missing, and I think
when you can do that as they did, as Joe
figured out what he was seeing, and I know Pitcher
(47:33):
with us this week and Zach Taylor talked about it
as well. Even Flaco that a couple of those in
the first half he wasn't seeing it as quick first
game with these guys and recognizes that the checkdowns that
he was hitting later, if he just would have hit
those those first couple of drives, those drives could have looked.
Speaker 2 (47:48):
More like the last ones.
Speaker 3 (47:49):
And I don't think it's going to be that simple
throughout the course of the season. Like teams are going
to see that and he is who he is, but
like that level of functionality with these level of around
him can beating off to score a decent amount of
points and keep you competitive.
Speaker 2 (48:05):
The problem is they've.
Speaker 3 (48:06):
Now lost four in a row and they've got to
do that on a fly and get out there and
beat Pittsburgh because they put their backs against the wall
a little bit trying to find.
Speaker 1 (48:15):
That I read what you wrote after Friday about how
this came together, the decision to bring in Joe Flacco,
the process of getting him up to speed with the offense,
him joining the team, learning who his teammates are, and
I coupled that with listening to him on Friday. Joe Flacco,
(48:36):
I've never had strong feelings about the guy. You know,
good career, long career, seems like an okay guy, spent
much of his career playing for a team I root against.
Never felt like he was one of the absolute best,
certainly respect what the dude has accomplished. I've gone from
feeling that way, and this has little to do with
how he played on Sunday, listening to him and reading
(48:57):
what you wrote about getting him up to speed. I'm
a Joe Flacco fan.
Speaker 3 (49:01):
Yeah, I mean, he has this level of humility and
professionalism that mixes well together. You know, it just feels
like he understands who he is, where he's at in
his career. He's very honest with himself. I mean, he's
just a grown adult, you know what I mean, Like
man has five kids, mo like.
Speaker 2 (49:19):
It changes you.
Speaker 3 (49:20):
And but he just he has a really, very real
sense of appreciating the moments that he's in is what
strikes me. Appreciating the fact that, yeah, I mean I am,
I'm driving down in the middle of the night, and
I would have driven myself. You didn't have to send
me these cars like I'm driving down because I appreciate
the fact that I'm about to have another chance, and
(49:41):
I appreciate the adversity that I went through, uh in Cleveland,
and just and there's an understanding of what the NFL
is with him. I just think that you don't get
often and that's fine.
Speaker 2 (49:53):
You just don't.
Speaker 3 (49:54):
Out of a lot of younger players when they're out
here and they view everything differently.
Speaker 2 (49:59):
But you can just say and so I mean that
wisdom that.
Speaker 3 (50:01):
He has about appreciating these moments, gratitude for the game,
and an understanding of how it all works. I just
think he certainly comes across as the true, true professional.
Speaker 1 (50:14):
I just I watched that whole thing on Friday, and
I thought, this guy understands how absurd this is and
handled it with humor, handled it with professionalism like that,
and just it helped with how he played in the
second half on Sunday. I just thought, like, that's a
dude worth rooting for, and like, now, I want this
(50:34):
to work. I want this to work because I'm a
Bengals fan. I want this to work because think it'd
be a cool story, and I think Joe Flacco being
at the center that would be neat. I was impressed
by how he handled that. It felt to me like
he he put himself in the position where he was
going to be very prepared, and his experience certainly allowed
him to do that. But I just I don't know, man,
(50:55):
I've walked away from the the early, the early early,
retire the Joe Flacco experience, appreciating him more than I
ever did because but before this week, I didn't care.
Speaker 3 (51:06):
Yeah, you know, I had Zach Jackson, who has covered
the Browns forever and he's notably sarcastic and critical of
the Browns at pretty much every turn whenever I talked
to him, So I.
Speaker 2 (51:20):
Always, really, I always really enjoy having.
Speaker 3 (51:22):
Catching up with Zach whenever it's it's whether it's on
my podcast or whatever.
Speaker 2 (51:27):
But like I had.
Speaker 3 (51:28):
Him on last week, We did one after the trade,
and I like softballed one up for him to be like, oh,
it's take a shot at the Browns and Flacco and whatever,
and it was the exact opposite. He was like, you know,
I'm the most cynical human on earth, and I feel
like I look at the Bengals and Joe Flacco and
think that it can work. And I think there was
an appreciation for everything that you just verbalized there, Moe,
(51:50):
and it's that he's a he's a true professional. He
is a real understanding of how the league works, and
this gratitude that he has plays well in certain places,
and it played well in Cleveland despite the fact that
Cleveland is the biggest pony show of what is going
on here in the whole league for periods of time.
But I think there's an understanding of how to handle
that stuff and deal with it. And you know, I
(52:12):
was really surprised. And that's somebody who has dealt with
Joe Flacco now in different parts for a couple of years.
And so that was when my antenna was first raised
to it. And I think you've seen that at pretty
much every turn thus far since Joe has gotten here.
Speaker 1 (52:27):
All right, a couple more because I know you have
stuff to do. I've beaten up this roster and it's
defense and I've wandered out loud. Are there are five
players I want to be on the team next year.
I might not be completely there yet, but DJ Turner
is winning me over.
Speaker 2 (52:42):
Yeah. I don't know how you're not.
Speaker 3 (52:44):
I mean, the way that he is playing now is
cornerback one stuff that the Bengals have been begging to find,
begging to draft, begging to develop for I don't know
as long as we can remember in recent memory, since CHIABAYOWUUZI,
you know, towards Aco that one year. I mean that
(53:04):
is it feels like they needed that to have a
guy that that they can rely on to make a play,
that they can rely on to shut down the other
team's best receiver. That can you know, we'll be sticky
in because just anything that you can count on in
the secondary that isn't some kind of a roller coaster
week to week. This is the evolution they've been begging
for from Dax Hill, from Cam Taylor Britt and now
(53:27):
from Turner. Any just asking for any of them to
turn into somebody like what he has played like over
the last month, and it's it's great to see. It's
hard not to believe in him right now in a
way that he's playing.
Speaker 1 (53:41):
Why is the Logan Wilson thing gone sound so quickly?
Speaker 3 (53:48):
It's a great question, and you know, Logan's obviously not
thrilled with it.
Speaker 2 (53:54):
And I think that.
Speaker 3 (53:57):
There is a general direction that the team wants to
go in terms of being young, and they feel like
if they're gonna be good at some point this year,
Barrett Carter is probably gonna have to be a part
of that answer.
Speaker 2 (54:14):
And the only way that he's.
Speaker 3 (54:15):
Gonna start to be a part of that answer is
if he gets reps, and he's not gonna get them
right now. It is a It's one of the more
stunning moves in recent years, just because I don't think
Logan Wilson was playing that bad. Okay, I don't think
that of all the of all the things happening out there. Defensively,
(54:37):
he wasn't in the top of my list of things
to worry about. And the one thing he was was
the one veteran out there amongst all of these kids
who have had roller coaster careers. Far like, there's so
many young players that are out there around them, and
then and guys that don't know what they're doing totally,
and to take away, the guy who has the seat
(54:58):
on his chest and the green on his helmet that
has been was just praised a week or two ago
for getting everybody lined up correctly, And as far as
I can tell, he isn't one of your top three
or four or five liabilities in terms of the way
he's playing. Doesn't make a ton of sense to me,
And it's just really surprising to see if it felt rash,
(55:19):
but it feels like this is just the direction that
they want to go, that they just feel like they
wanted to see if Barrett Carter can bring them some
kind of a jolt.
Speaker 2 (55:28):
But you know, we just talked to the logan.
Speaker 3 (55:30):
In the locker room and he didn't feel like he
got much of an explanation for why the move happened.
And he's doing everything he can to help Barrett and
is going to be the good teammate.
Speaker 2 (55:40):
But I think there's a sense of him being as
befuddled as some of the a lot of the other
of us are.
Speaker 1 (55:46):
I don't get it. And number one, I don't know
that Barrett Carter has played so well that he has
distinguished himself that you go, you know what, you got
to get this guy in the field more and he's
a rookie, so he's not supposed to. But I'm with you.
I said to you after the first game that that
was the first time in over a year that I
had watched Logan Wilson play, where I said during the game, like, hey,
(56:07):
there's Logan Wilson. He maybe hasn't been that good since
I just I feel like I feel like the leash
for him has been shorter than a lot of other
guys they've had, and it's it's hard for me to
wrap my brain around why.
Speaker 3 (56:20):
Yeah, I agree with you, and I think that's to me,
it just goes back to the fact that they need
somebody who knows what they're doing out there, and that
was apparent. You know, you look at the second half
of that game. I mean the touchdown against Green Bay.
You've got two rookie linebackers and nobody goes to the
A gap and Josh Jacobs runs right.
Speaker 2 (56:41):
Up the middle for a touchdown.
Speaker 3 (56:43):
It's just, you know, that's the type of stuff when
you're really serious about trying to win games right now,
you know, those are those are risks that you can't
be that you're just not taking in terms of having
that level of inexperience with two rookie linebackers out there together.
And there's other there's just other ways to work them in.
You know, there can there can be rotational stuff. You
can have you know, bigger sub package work or or
(57:06):
alternate drives for a little while and.
Speaker 2 (57:09):
See how it's going and get repped in that way.
Speaker 3 (57:11):
Or it's just for it to immediately be Barrett Carter
plays one hundred percent of the snaps in Green Bay.
It's just it was just a much riskier decision than
I feel like this point in the season warrants.
Speaker 1 (57:27):
I have found that sometimes in life, this thing happens
where you're doing your job just fine, everybody seems to
like you, and then they just pull the plug for
no reason, and uh, I don't understand it and it
defies explanation sometimes. But you know, that's that's why I
search for answers eternally on the search for answers.
Speaker 3 (57:46):
Yeah, I think the Bengals are eternally on the search
for answers right now too. It feels like that's a
big part of what's happening around here. And we'll see
how lost they are on Thursday.
Speaker 1 (57:55):
I suppose we'll see Paul. I missed you here today,
but we'll see you next week.
Speaker 15 (58:00):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (58:00):
As always, I look forward to talk to everybody.
Speaker 1 (58:03):
Likewise, Paul Danner Junior catch the podcast, the Growlar Podcast,
read him at the Athletic dot Com his piece and
he wrote it on I think he wrote it Friday,
wrote about just what they did to get Joe Flacco
up to speed. His is really good and again, man,
like they've lost four consecutive games. This season's is at
a tipping point. We're already breaking the glass and applying
(58:27):
the must win label to the game on Thursday, like
things are knock wing great. The defense is not good.
They're on their third quarterback in seven games. Like this
isn't good. But Joe Flacco has never elicited strong feelings
and maybe that's his legacy, Like you know when when
we were doing this thirteen years ago after they won
(58:48):
the Super Bowl. The whole like is is Joe Flacco elite?
And like I'm gonna sit this one out because the
answer is no. But we'll argue over Joe Flacco if
you want. I've become a fan this week. I felt
like he's out there Friday and handled the questions about
this just ridiculous situation with humor, and it felt like
(59:10):
he did everything he could to prepare himself ready to play,
to get ready to play on Sunday. It felt like
the team did respond to him on some level, certainly
in the second half. I don't have uber high hopes
that this is gonna be sustainable. He can't move The
offensive line, while it played decent in the second half,
is not great. They all have a great running game
(59:31):
even if they score points. The defense doesn't feel like
they can stop anybody right now. But you know, we
said it last week. It's at least interesting, and I
think Joe Flacco, the way he has handled this and
the way he played in the second half have made
it even more interesting. It is twenty three after four o'clock.
We're at Oakley Green's. We're gonna hear Joe Flaco and
Jamar and he'd been waiting all day for this. You'll
(59:54):
hear from Joe and Jamar coming up in twelve minutes
on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 10 (01:00:00):
Station, Cincinnati's ESPN.
Speaker 13 (01:00:04):
This is Football in the Natti, brought to you by
bell Terra Casino and Belterra Park on ESPN fifteen thirty,
the official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 1 (01:00:16):
Football in the Nattie. Hey, if you missed the show yesterday,
The Football Show with James Rapine, go find it right now.
You don't have to go find it. It's available on
the iHeartRadio app. You could also get onto the podcast
page of ESPN fifteen thirty dot com. Obviously, we talked
a ton about the game on Sunday Bengals and Packers
looked ahead to the tilt on Thursday. This game on
(01:00:40):
Thursday really is if you're a Baltimore Ravens fan, or
I guess if you're a Cleveland Browns fan. Certainly if
you're a Bengals fan, I wrestle with how good the
Pittsburgh Steelers are. I wrestle with how good a lot
of these teams in the AFC are.
Speaker 6 (01:00:55):
You know?
Speaker 1 (01:00:56):
People are writing about how broken the Bills are after
watching last night. I'm not there yet. The Chiefs are
trending upward. I'm not sure they have fixed every offensive issue.
I still believe there is a world where the Baltimore
Ravens win this division because Lamar is gonna come back
after the buye according to all the reports out there
in Baltimore, the schedule does ease up, they're getting a
(01:01:18):
little healthier on defense, that that roster is still really
really good. But the AFC, I'm not sure how much
better the NFC is, quite frankly, but I it's more
difficult than a lot of folks would have guessed before
the season began to kind of wrap your head around
what the AFC as a conference is going to be.
(01:01:40):
And I think one of the difficult teams to really
wrap your head around is the Pittsburgh Steelers. I don't
know that I have changed my opinion on them from
what it was this offseason, which is week to week.
They're still really hard to play week to week. You
don't look forward to playing them. Big picture. I don't
know they're bona fide championship contenders, but they're in the
(01:02:03):
driver's seat in this division and they're going to be
firmly planted in the driver's seat if they win on Thursday.
Send the Bengals to their fifth consecutive loss game a
half game on Baltimore, who's off this week, like you know,
everybody in the division. And again we'll fold the Browns
into this as well. Have to be looking at this
(01:02:25):
game on Thursday as if we have any chance of
catching them, Bengals need to beat them. In Cincinnati on
Thursday night, we will see four thirty sports headlines and
Jamar and Joe coming up. Plus what to tell people
when they tell you the college football is broken. That
amazing sports talk radio topic is coming up. We're at
Oakley Greens in Oakley on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 13 (01:02:49):
You've been listening to football in the NATI on ESPN
fifteen thirty, the official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 10 (01:03:01):

Speaker 1 (01:03:40):
Did that lady in that teren.
Speaker 2 (01:03:45):
Taren?
Speaker 1 (01:03:45):
What are you doing? I know you have a lot
going on back there. The rule hasn't changed. Okay, well
we've changes to the radio station have happened. Well, we
still have a very very very hard and fast rule.
Speaker 4 (01:03:58):
No.
Speaker 1 (01:03:59):
Will Smith on this show, No post nineteen eighty eight,
Will Smith on this show.
Speaker 15 (01:04:05):
I know there's been a lessons I did. I just
wanted to get you riled up a little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:04:07):
Oh you It worked. It definitely got me riled up.
There's no doubt about that. Did that lady in that
A leave? Commercials say the holidays are here? Yes, it's
they're not. If you want to say the holidays are coming,
that's that's that's not going to be disputed. They are coming,
They're not here. It's October fourteenth. Halloween is still more
than two weeks away. Lady, sell your your whatever, your
(01:04:30):
a seed of minefit or whatever. A leave is? Hell,
I don't know are you allowed to take that if
you're pregnant, No idea. Sell you're a leave, don't tell
me the holidays are here. Agreement.
Speaker 15 (01:04:39):
Remember there is that sweetest Day this weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:04:42):
We don't celebrate Sweetest Day at our house. My wife
and I, when we met thirteen years ago, we made
a pledge to each other. We met in October right
after Sweetest Day. Hey, look we'll do We'll do birthdays,
We'll do major holidays. We'll even do Valentine's Day. No
Sweetest Day. No adult does Sweetest Day. The Sweetest Day
is a holiday created by Hallmark. Sweetest Day. Like you
(01:05:05):
buy like a girl you want to take to the
dance a card for Sweetest Day. No adult is doing
Sweetest Day. I'm sure Aran has big plans. What do
sports headline service to Kelsey Chevroleigh home of lifetime powertrain protection. Literally,
do you know anybody over the age of the twenty four?
I ain't got something big happening on Sweetest Day.
Speaker 4 (01:05:27):
No, it's an Instagram holiday.
Speaker 1 (01:05:29):
I'm sorry, Tarn. You know everybody's different. It might be
in it. You will not see an Instagram. My wife
hates that crap. My wife don't want. She doesn't want.
I saw a Mother's Day post about her a couple
of years ago, and I was like, why'd you do that?
I thought it'd be nice? Uh huh. We don't do that.
Bengals and Steelers on Thursday. They practice tonight, so I
guess there's no injury report, but you're gonna hear Joe
Flacco and Jamar Chase in justin minute. There is a
(01:05:52):
Scott Sadafield radio show tonight hosted by me Dan Horde
on assignment. As we say, and so the coach and myself,
we'll give you an hour of stillating UC football conversation
beginning at eight o'clock tonight tonight. It's a game two
of the National League Championship Series between the Brewers and Dodgers.
I will make this a pole question if you celebrate
(01:06:14):
sweetest Day. If I think I've done this before, I
will make it a pole question here during the next break,
Yoshiamamoto and Freddie Peroltz on the hill. Eight oh eight,
first pitch from Milwaukee. We're not carrying those games for
reasons I don't understand. Dodgers have a one nothing series lead.
We have this audio for you. This is exciting. This
(01:06:34):
is Joe Flacco, this is the quarterback of the Bengals.
This is Super Bowl MVP. Joe Flacco. Did you get
that drink in your mouth? Trewe are you okay. Here's
Joe Flacco, who was Joe Flacco who's played against Mike
Tomlin a lot. Here's Joe talking about what sticks out
about a Mike Tomlin team.
Speaker 16 (01:06:56):
Listen, I mean, I think they've been Look how consistent
they've been over the last twenty years. I mean, how
long has he been there now, Oh, twenty years or more? Uh,
they're always physical. I think they I think I think
they found out who they wanted to be as a
team early on, and they've continued to build their teams
based off of that, and that's why they always have
(01:07:17):
a chance.
Speaker 1 (01:07:18):
Well, pretty awesome stuff from Joe Flacco. They're definitely insightful,
teach a lot about the game. On Thursday, now, Jamar
Chase changed a play where he scored a touchdown against
Green Bay, and so here is a Joe talking about
what it's like when Jamar comes into the huddle and
says we should run something different.
Speaker 16 (01:07:37):
Oh yeah, I know you think it like I don't.
I don't think he's out there freestyle and at least
not with me right now, you know. And listen, I mean, ultimately,
if he came to me and said, hey, I know
the plays this, but I'm going to do this, I'd say,
I'd say, okay, I guess, yeah, that's what you're gonna do. Okay,
that sounds good to me. I would uh, I would
lean on him to feel it out, but I don't don't.
(01:08:00):
I don't necessarily see that happening. But I'm just hypothetically
if he was to come to me and do that,
I'd just say, yes, sir, that's that's what we'll do.
Speaker 1 (01:08:09):
And and Chamar was asked about this, and here's what
Chamar had to say about this particular topic.
Speaker 15 (01:08:18):
I don't want to play quarterback.
Speaker 4 (01:08:20):
Let me say that.
Speaker 1 (01:08:20):
I don't want to play I don't want to play quarterback.
Speaker 17 (01:08:23):
But I can tell like guys like you're here, here, here,
and here. Yeah, I can do that, but I'm not
want to play quarterback now.
Speaker 4 (01:08:29):
I mean, how much of a weapon is that for
you to know it that well, to be able to
help your teammates. I guess benefit.
Speaker 17 (01:08:37):
Just in case you know, Joe might color playing backwards
are wrong, maybe he might mess up. You know, we
we correct him in a huddle, and that helps us
know what we're doing and confidence within ourselves too.
Speaker 1 (01:08:48):
You know, here you go there's a Jamar Chase and
Joe Flacco. This some have used what happened in that
game on Sunday is a reason to kind of fire
off at Zach Taylor and this is why he shouldn't
be calling. I'm all on board with Zach Taylor not
calling plays. Over the course of an NFL season, do
you know how many times a wide receiver will tell
(01:09:08):
the quarterback we're not running, that we're running. This probably
happens reasonably often. So there you go, right, boy, I
wish we had more of that audio we have Ken
in Lexington. Ken, feel free to rescue this segment. You're
on ESPN fifteen thirty high Ken.
Speaker 18 (01:09:26):
Hey, hey, mo, I don't know what I can do
for the segment anyway. A fun fact, you're talking about
the Brewers and the Mariners. A lot of people don't
realize this, and I do because I'm seventy four years
old and I've been a baseball fan for a long time.
But the Brewers started in Seattle and nineteen sixty nine
(01:09:48):
as an expansion team. Yeah, this handle Pilots, that's right.
Speaker 6 (01:09:52):
And.
Speaker 1 (01:09:55):
The subject of the greatest sports the subject of the
greatest sports book ever written, Ball four by Jim Bell,
who was a member of that team.
Speaker 18 (01:10:03):
Yeah, yes, right, he tried to make you come back
and as hilarious book.
Speaker 4 (01:10:09):
I read it.
Speaker 18 (01:10:10):
And of course when the Brewers you know came, uh,
you know, when they became the Brewers, they were in
the American League for years and uh and then until
you know, they joined I finally joined the in L
Central And when they were in the in L Central
there were six teams and some of the other there
(01:10:32):
were only five teams in all the other leagues except
the AL West only had four teams. So they took
the Astros and put them in the West. So just
a little fun fact there. I didn't know people knew about.
I knew you would know because you're an expert at
all this.
Speaker 1 (01:10:49):
I am most definitely not an expert. And I think
today's broadcast has proven that you're exactly right. The Milwaukee
Brewers have had a little bit of a nomadic history.
Bud Sea League took the team from Seattle, bought it
was a car salesman, took it to Milwaukee, and did
so like right before the season. I think they actually
moved operations during spring training, if I'm not mistaken. Before
(01:11:10):
the nineteen seventy season where they were in the American
League East. They went to the World Series Game seven
in nineteen eighty two, and then and then we're moved
to the National League at the advent of interleague play
in the late nineteen nineties, nineteen ninety seven, I believe.
And so yeah, we had six teams in the National
League Central for a while, and we had four in
(01:11:30):
the American League West, and then they balanced things out
and took the Astros out of the National League Central
and moved moved them to the to the AL West.
You are You're right. There's a generation of fans who
don't know what it's like to have the Brewers in
the American League.
Speaker 18 (01:11:46):
And you totally nailed it with all that explanation you
just did, because I could not get that out clearly.
So that's why you're radio pro and I'm just a fan.
Speaker 4 (01:11:56):
So anyway, that's all true.
Speaker 1 (01:11:59):
Thank you, Ken, that's very very kind of you, and
I thank you for listening. I am barely a radio pro,
but I will tell you this, if you've not read
the book Ball four by Jim Boughton, which came out
in the early nineteen seventies, about the nineteen sixty nine
Seattle Pilots seem I think, why do I want to
read a book about a baseball team from nineteen sixty nine?
(01:12:20):
Because the book is hilarious and at that point, you know,
most like first person. The autobiographies of athletes were like
milk and cookie sort of stuff, Like you know, it
was about how they they ate well and they took
their It was like Hulk Hogan writing a sports autobiography,
right it's and Jim Boughton's like, actually we drink a
(01:12:41):
lot and we have fun on the road, and there's
infidelity involved. And it was like a book that for
its time was an incredible, incredibly controversial. I read it
like in high school because actually high school teacher suggest
that I read it, knowing how much I loved baseball
and baseball books. And I've probably read that book. There
(01:13:02):
have been different editions of it. I've probably read that
book more than any other book, any other book, sports
or non and so you should read it. And yes,
the Milwaukee Brewers started in Seattle. And if we get
a Mariners Brewers World Series, which again the Brewers have
an uphill battle, then I'm sure somebody will do a
story on the Seattle Pilots and how the Brewers went
(01:13:22):
from the Seattle Pirates, the Pirates Pilots to the Milwaukee Brewers.
There you go, fourteen away from five o'clock. I spent
a few minutes on college football on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 10 (01:13:35):
Station Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 1 (01:14:15):
Score during the preseason. Paul questions on this show courtesy
of the aforementioned United Heartland Insurance. You know we're in
Q four. Q four in the corporate world always a blast,
but it's really when you start thinking like What am
I going to do for insurance in twenty twenty six?
Am I going to maintain status quo? Am I gonna
pay less? How can I pay less?
Speaker 12 (01:14:35):
Well?
Speaker 1 (01:14:35):
The answer to that question lies with the folks at
United Heartland Insurance. Three offices. They got one in Burlington
Route eighteen, where my mom used to live. They got
one in Cincinnati, they got one in Hamilton, and they
also have a website. Pretty cool with them. They have
a website uhis dot com. Find out what those folks
can do for you. Per request I have asked, do
(01:14:56):
you celebrate Sweetest Day? Now? The voting is early, Okay,
I just threw this out there. The voting is early. Literally,
it's been up for six minutes, so it will last
for twenty four hours. So we'll see right now, ninety
eight point one percent of you say no, So tarn,
(01:15:18):
I'm sorry, and again to each their own. If you
celebrate Sweetest Day, that's that dude. Do what you gotta do, man.
But my guess is most not so much. In our house.
We're among the ninety eight point one percent vote now
at Mullagar watch.
Speaker 15 (01:15:40):
Love music on Thursday.
Speaker 1 (01:15:43):
You can do whatever you want, man, I not not
with a football game. No, why not?
Speaker 15 (01:15:48):
You can't get hype for a football game. Listen to
love music.
Speaker 1 (01:15:52):
I don't know, man, I haven't tried. We'll see, I
haven't really tried. Get stoked for Bengals. Do it tomorrow?
We play Christmas carols like in the twenty first Play
your Sweetest Day music tomorrow. I'm in studio. What the
hell see if anybody notices, if you it will know. Yeah,
(01:16:13):
we'll take requests. Kitchen the mood for Sweetest Day. If
you watch a lot of college football, as I do
on Saturdays, you will see these TV commercials where they're
they're asking you to call Congress, call your local member
of the House of Representatives, because, by the way, if
you are in Congress, this is the most pressing issue.
(01:16:34):
And the messages tell your congress person to save college sports,
save college football, save Olympic sports, save women's sports, because well,
we've got to pay these athletes now, and it's gonna
be really hard. The schools are gonna go belly up,
and we're not gonna have college but we're not even
gonna have colleges anymore. This is a popular thing. College
(01:16:57):
sports are being ruined, and for me, something is ruined
when people stop consuming it. College football ratings are through
the roof. College football ratings moving forward will continue to
be through the roof. The stadiums are full, folks are
excited about the sport. Quality of play, for the most part,
is really good. I'm watching the fallout from James Franklin
at Penn State, who's going to be paid forty nine
(01:17:20):
million dollars to not work. Now, I get it, there's
like a clause in the contract he has to show
a good faith effort to get a job to offset
any of the money to Penn State owes him. But
we're we're talking about UCLA is blown out as coach
in Virginia Tech then moved on from their coach and
now high profile obviously Penn State. And these coaches get
(01:17:41):
these massive buyouts, so much so that it's believed that
the combined cost of buyouts to fired head coaches at
the end of the season will exceed two hundred million dollars.
And so the next time you hear somebody say, well,
college sports, we have to save it. College football it's
being ruined. Is something really being ruined when people are
(01:18:05):
being paid that kind of money to not work like
is there is there such a dearth of available funds?
Is what is going to make college football go belly up?
The fact that a college football player might be making
low six figures or and by the way, that kid
(01:18:25):
actually shows up and plays like he's working. He's showing
up to work, unlike failed coaches who are getting paid
dozens of millions of dollars to not work. So if
you believe that that is a sign the college football
is thriving, that is okay. If you believe the college
football is being ruined, I would ask what is a
bigger problem The fact that the actual players are getting
(01:18:47):
their due for the first time ever, or that the
college football coaches could fail spectacularly and the same people
who hire them then have to come up with the
thirty to forty to fifty million dollar dollar to pay
them to not work anymore. It is a couple away
from five o'clock. We're at Oakley Greens. Let's talk about
what I didn't think Sunday was what I know it was,
(01:19:10):
and we'll apply it to Thursday, and I'll make that
make sense when we come back on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station.

All right, what's up. It's up four minutes after five o'clock.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. My name is Mullleger. We
are having an absolute blast here at Oakley Greens. It
is gorgeous out. If you are inside right now, you
have my sympathies, because man, how could you not want
to be outside? In a few weeks it's going to
be miserable out, So take advantage of the outdoors. Come
(01:19:53):
on out to Oakley Greens, get a get a cold
outdoor beer, an ice cold bud Light. It's the bud
Light five o'clock happy hour here at Oakley Greens. It
goes without saying. There's folks over there. They've rented a cabana.
Looks like some sort of like workplace happy hour that
looks kind of like the ones we always have. Looks
like a lot of fun. You could rent a cabana.
You could post up here for games. You can watch
(01:20:16):
the Bengals game on Thursday. They've got Bengo on Mondays
and Thursdays, so you have Bengo on Thursdays. That's going
to be an absolute blast. Oakley Greens they are so
and an amazing staff as well. They are so kind
to us, and we love coming here. And it's even
better when you get great weather. And you know me,
I'm a stickler for good weather. Today today is the
(01:20:37):
absolute best here at Oakley Greens. We're here till six o'clock.
We're here every Tuesday, and we love the folks here.
Our friend Sean Sayet is going to join us, coming
up in just about fifteen minutes. Stats and scheme, newsletters,
suomer sports dot com. Sean is awesome. We'll talk Bengals, Steelers,
Joe Flacco, and in so much more. There's a UC
(01:20:58):
basketball note that we have to address up here in
just a bit. A few more college football odds and
ends as well. No major Bengals news today beyond the
Logan Wilson thing where he has been basically benched in
favor of Barrett Carter is really interesting to me. Our
friend Charlie Goldsmith, whose newsletter is an absolute must, writes
(01:21:21):
about Logan Wilson uses Logan Wilson's quotes and I'm not
going to read Charlie's work here, go subscribe to his newsletter.
But Logan Wilson comes off as a guy who's mystified
as to why he lost his gig, why he lost
his starting job. And the quote that Charlie uses in
the piece from Logan is quote the reason I was
(01:21:42):
given was they wanted a spark on defense. Can I
do something that I'm not supposed to do? When you
have this job, you're supposed to have a definitive opinion.
I could see both sides of this. Number one. I
could see Logan Wilson looking at the leash given to
(01:22:03):
some other players going wait a minute, I'm the guy
losing my gig. Like We've had a whole host of
other dudes who haven't performed very well, who uh it
feels like they get forever, and now I'm the guy
At the same time, and Logan Wilson has had a
really nice Bengals career that goes without saying through different
(01:22:27):
coordinators and different regimes like, Logan Wilson has been a
net positive for the Cincinnati Bengals. There is a part
of me, though that I look at Logan Wilson and go.
Chances are, at the age of twenty nine, this is
as good as he's gonna get. Maybe let's start to
see if somebody else can be a little bit better
(01:22:49):
than just what Logan Wilson has been and perhaps yes,
provide a little bit of a spark and maybe prove
that they're one of these guys that moving forward they
can build around. Like I don't know if Barrett Carter
really has earned a ton more playing time. In fact,
I watched him on Sunday and often thought like, why
(01:23:10):
is he out there so much? But this defense, this
defense hasn't been very good. This defense hasn't been very
good in a while, And this defense hasn't shown that
it has that many like legitimate building blocks in a while.
I think if you understand that to a degree, maybe
it makes sense to try somebody else, Try somebody that
(01:23:32):
you invested a draft pick in. Like, it's not like
they brought in a whole bunch of other dbs, And
right now, DJ Turner looks like a part of the solution.
Dax Ill has played. Okay, nobody else really from outside
in that unit a linebacker they did draft too. I
think most of us really like some of the stuff
we've seen from Demetrius Knight. I like Logan, and I
(01:23:53):
can understand him being kind of mystified and not understanding
the explanation. By the way, I would imagine that if
you enough to go talk to Zach Taylor or Al Golden,
they would give him an explanation. But there is a
part of me that, after having watched the Bengals defense
be so uninspiring for so long, can appreciate them turning
the page from a guy like Logan, who, lets face it,
(01:24:15):
maybe his best years are behind him to somebody who
could benefit from experience whose best years are hopefully still
in front of them. We'll see, but it is kind
of an interesting subplot to what the main plot of
the Bengals season right now is, which is can Joe
Flacco rescue it? I am in professional sports. I don't
(01:24:38):
believe in moral victories. Sunday was not a moral victory.
I don't believe in moral victories. I do believe in context.
So the context of Sunday was the Bengals are going
on the road to play a more rested team in
their building. They're going to be fourteen and a half
point favorites. The Bengals are turned to a quarterback who
(01:25:02):
the previous week was employed by another team, who just
joined the team really on Wednesday, who's learning the offense
and building relationships with his teammates on the fly. Nobody
wanted to hear this, right, I get it. They were
not going to win that game on Sunday. And I
think anybody, even the most you know, orange and black
(01:25:27):
colored glasses optimistic Bengals fan, I think, if they were
being really truthful, would admit that there was pretty much
no chance they were going to beat the Green Bay Packers.
Maybe if they had Joe Burrow, maybe with Jake Browning,
although I doubt it so, I believe in context, the
context of that game was they're probably not going to win.
(01:25:49):
If you acknowledge that, then you looked at that game
through a different lens than do they win or do
they lose. The lens that I looked at it through
was Okay, can they plan some seeds? Can they plan
some seeds for success against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, this
game on Thursday is going to be a bear. It
(01:26:10):
always is when they play Pittsburgh. The Steelers scored at
will against him in Cincinnati last year, and they've upgraded
at quarterback since Mike Tomlin. Teams are always difficult like
this is. They're not fourteen and a half point dogs,
but they are five and a half point home dogs
in a short week, So this is going to be
(01:26:31):
a very uphill battle. But I looked at that game
someday through a very very simple lens and one that
I don't want to look at other Bengals games through
every again, which is, Okay, they're not going to win.
But can this game be used for Joe Flacco to,
I don't know, make us feel like there is a
glimpse of hope, a glimmer of hope, I should say,
Can the seeds be planted for Joe Flacco to do
(01:26:54):
more and do better moving forward? Can they use this
game to build chemistry, to to get more on the
same page, to figure out what things may or may
not work offensively, to get Joe Flacco comfortable being a
Cincinnati Bengal. And look, the advantage they have here is
Joe's experience, I think Joe's professionalism. I'm calling them Joe
(01:27:15):
because we're already in a first name basis, but there
were things here that could play to their favor, the
experience and the professionalism being one of them. I went
into that game viewing it as a preseason game. The
result almost meaningless. Now that's not to say there weren't
things in that game that were deeply frustrating the defense
(01:27:36):
in the second half, where it felt like every time
maybe they have a shot to win, the defense would
give up a scoring drive to the Packers in the
second half. I thought the game plan in the first
half was a tad conservative, although not that much. But
by and large I looked at that as a preseason game,
and in a preseason game, who wins and who loses
(01:27:57):
is irrelevant. Can things happen in that game that's set
the stage for larger scale success. Now you have a
game on Thursday. Let's be honest, it feels like the
entire season hinges on this. If they win this one,
we're gonna look at the schedule, we're gonna look at
who they play, and we're gonna start to talk about
(01:28:18):
the pathway to at least being in the hunt when
Joe Burrow comes back in mid December, assuming for a
second he will, and that's maybe an ambitious assumption. If
they lose this game, it's who are they trading. What
are they getting for Trey Hendrickson? Are they trading Logan Wilson?
What is the roster going to look like in a
couple of weeks. How do they hit the reset button
(01:28:39):
as quickly as possible. Now you might go, well, then
they'll beat the Jets and beat the Bears, which I
think the second of those two things is going to
be difficult. Two and five. Nobody's gonna be talking about
the AFC North two and five. Very few will consider
their postseason possibilities. The math starts to get really hard.
I said this about an hour ago to Paul Danner
Junior two and five. It feels like game over. Three
(01:29:02):
and four feels like game on. At least to use
the next few games to stay on the hunt, continue
to work on some things, let the rest of the
AFC play out, play yourself into playoff contention, hopefully, all
the while Joe Burrow is progressing. And by the way,
there's a part of that that you can't really wrap
your brain around, because there's not been many concrete updates
(01:29:23):
about Joe Burrow. We'll see they may get destroyed on Thursday.
Nobody would be surprised. They may get steamrolled by Pittsburgh's
offense on Thursday, nobody would be surprised. Joe Flacco's age
and poor offensive line may catch up to him. Nobody
would be surprised. But at the very least of that
game on Sunday, you saw an offense that wasn't as clunky.
(01:29:44):
We didn't have all the delay of game issues or
having to burn timeouts. There were no major issues getting
the play called, all the stuff that they couldn't master
with Jake Browning, all the stuff that if you can't master,
forget about, you know, doing anything remotely complex offensively. I
thought the offensive line in the second half played all right.
I thought you could see the chemistry forming in front
(01:30:07):
of our eyes between Joe and his receivers. And again,
maybe the Steelers are going to have an antidote to that,
and that would be unsurprising. But I didn't think they
were beating the Green Bay Packers, And be honest, if
you're a Bengals fan, you weren't either. If you paid
attention to that game, I think you looked at it
through the lens of can they plan some seeds that
they can they can water so to speak and may
(01:30:30):
end up being something they can build on and use
and beat the Pittsburgh Steelers with. We will see a
quarter after five, our guy, Sean Sayan is going to
join us. This dude's a like a smart guy, like
this guy. This guy's a genius. This guy understands schemes
and stats and trends and x's and o's personnel groupings.
(01:30:51):
And we're going to talk about all that stuff with him,
and he's going to make a smarter when we come

(01:32:07):
If you haven't tried out Sumer Brain, Sean kind of
walks you through it and he'll tell us more about
it here in just a few minutes. First, Sean, what's
going on?
Speaker 12 (01:32:16):
How are you?
Speaker 4 (01:32:18):
No? Nothing much, Yeah, just always enjoying talking about our bangles.
Second place in the AFC North. Maybe consider consider hanging
the batter now. Yeah, I would say let's let's go ahead.
Let's go ahead and do that. But doing well, it's
fun to watch a little bit. Joe Blaco, you were right.
You said that Placo was going to start. I thought
you were being silly, but you certainly know better than
(01:32:39):
I do.
Speaker 1 (01:32:39):
I am usually not right about anything, but that that
seemed to me like the most likely outcome. I looked
at that game on Sunday, and I've talked about it
here in the last two days. I looked at that
game on Sunday as a preseason game, like, yeah, it'd
be cool if they win, but they're fourteen and a
half point dogs, they have all sorts of defensive issues.
Show me something as the game moves far that makes
(01:33:00):
me feel like this Joe Flacco thing can work to
an agree And I feel like, as much as a
lot of folks don't want to hear it, mission accomplished.
Speaker 2 (01:33:10):
Yeah I don't want to.
Speaker 4 (01:33:11):
You know, we actually don't have to hang in the banner.
But I was going in very much ready to look
at the film and say, man, like Flacco is, he
has absolutely nothing, there's nothing that can come of this offense.
And I was a little bit surprised there was definitely
some positive there where. Look, Flacco certainly doesn't have the
entire play sheet and like the whole entire playbook yet,
so as weeks go on, you can probably expand it
(01:33:34):
just a little bit. Obviously, hopefully he's able to stay healthy,
but he is able to keep the trains moving on top.
You know, I think you can probably leave that game
feeling decent about it, where you just look more competent
than you did when you had Jake Browning in that spot.
So I'm curious, you know, how much is that able
to continue overall? Like are you able to you know,
tie him together with the run game that is actually
(01:33:54):
able to throw and defenses just a little bit because
he can definitely throw the ball deep down the field
off action, and you know, I think Jamarr Chase is
probably pretty happy about how that one turned out as well.
Speaker 1 (01:34:04):
Yeah, no question. They were running a lot of tosses too,
which is not something we typically see here.
Speaker 4 (01:34:10):
Yeah, I think against defenses that are really up the field,
like you, you're gonna have defenders really trying to attack you,
you can try and like have someone just kind of
hin down on the outside, defender get that ball on
the outside. Of course, you feel comfortable with Chase brown
running in space, I think it's a it's got to
be a game to game approach, just in terms of
the running game. It's thought it was going to be, hey,
under center, We're going to run straight at you. At
(01:34:32):
your middle linebacker up the middle. I think if you
if you can combine sort of spread elements of the
offense and you know, stretch the defense in different directions,
that can usually be a pretty positive thing.
Speaker 1 (01:34:43):
All right. So if you're if you're Zach Taylor and
Dan Pitcher and you have what Joe Flacco did on Sunday,
and now you want to build upon it against the Steelers,
Admittedly with a short week that makes it slightly more difficult.
Where do you begin.
Speaker 4 (01:35:00):
I think it's got to be a quick passing game overall.
I think you've probably be a little bit scared just
about the Steelers pass rush overall. You know, it could
be a situation where you're really spreading things out, like
you're getting into some of those empty sets where you're
gonna be able to see, Okay, Pittsburgh probably out blitzing here,
but the way they play zone coverage, there's gonna be
this open gap. I can just take kind of quick
(01:35:21):
throw underneath. I'm gonna be curious, you know, as defenses
they're seeing more of Flacco, like, it's probably gonna it's
like a threes in layups kind of approach. Those quick
throws underneath some of those deep shots over the top.
So you still want to find ways to get those
one on one isolation throws because you're gonna just win
those flat out kind of often with Jamar Chase. But
I'm curious just how creative can you be in terms
(01:35:44):
of ways to get the ball out of Flacco's hands
as quick as possible. If he's gonna be decisive, you know,
he's not gonna want to hang out in the pocket
for four seconds. He's not gonna want to run around there.
He doesn't have to, because if he's able to get
rid of the ball quick, then I think you can
get some of those consistent drives against the Steelers team. Yeah,
I don't love their offense or do you find the thing?
It is certainly a positive unit overall.
Speaker 1 (01:36:04):
Yeah, I want to ask you about them here in
just the second Sean sayed sumer sports dot Com. The
Stats and Scheme newsletter is an absolute must shows up
in your inbox multiple times per week. I thought, and
this is I guess more just about personnel. I thought
in the second half of that game, there was a
level of proficiency from the offensive line that if that
(01:36:26):
continues and you're being reasonable if you assume it won't,
but if that continues could sort of I don't know,
at the very least gives Joe Flacco a chance because
we've talked about as immobility for so long.
Speaker 4 (01:36:39):
Yeah, I mean kind of surprising, right when you think
about this game. As you mentioned, the Packers were a
huge favorite. I think the overall pressure percentage was only
around like twenty five percent, which on the grand scale
that is not like a super super high percentage. And
sometimes that even happened where Flacco did hold on the
ball just maybe a little bit further. You're trying to
develop something as well, So if you can build the
(01:37:00):
positive performance that's that could be good, because you know,
the Packers as a team are funky because at some
point they look like literally guaranteed Super Bowl champions, and
at some point they look like a team that doesn't
deserve to even be in the playoffs, like they really
do run hot and cold. But I think from this
game you can take some of those positives where Mo,
it feels like that we haven't been able to do
(01:37:20):
that all the time this year, so maybe it's a
little bit of rose colored glasses, But taking a low
pressure number overall and moving that forward, you know that
can be something that you can certainly build around for
the rest of the year.
Speaker 1 (01:37:31):
You said you don't love Pittsburgh's offense. Why not?
Speaker 4 (01:37:35):
So I think for Aaron Rodgers at this point in
his career, he's going to be a low time to
throw a quarterback, so he's gonna get rid of the
ball pretty quickly. You're gonna see a lot of underneath throws. Overall,
it feels like they're winning some of these games based
on I mean one and obviously like plays on their
defense or like big zards after catch plays from DK
(01:37:56):
Metcalf or these these things that feel just not as repeatable.
And I know this is just could be like how
well like my personal taste in offense is and kind
of how I like, look at what is sustainable overall.
I mean, it's a Thursday night, so obviously that's tough.
The Steelers should be favorites in that game. But there
was like a little bit of a fun from the
(01:38:16):
Bengals defense, just like a little bit you get the
interception of course against Jordan Love as well. When I
look back to the Steelers game, okay, the Jets in
Week one, you know, I think we're all seeing where
the Jets are at. Now. You're able to beat the
Patriots in the game where the Patriots have five turnovers.
You're beating the Vikings and the Browns with their backup quarterbacks.
So you know, I guess maybe the Steelers superpower this
year is they consistently are able to face backup quarterbacks.
(01:38:39):
So I would love for this to be the upset
week for the Bengals. It feels like, you know, you
can get that offense a little bit stuck in the mud,
maybe create something there.
Speaker 1 (01:38:48):
You know, this is Pittsburgh's threatening to run away and hide.
I think if they win this game on Thursday, you
almost assume they do. If not, it feels like, all right,
the division is more wide open. Maybe the Bengals aren't
going to be a factor. Should fans in Baltimore give
up on them being a factor with the one and.
Speaker 4 (01:39:06):
Five record, that is tough, right, It's good that for
Baltimore that you have that extra wild card spawn now.
Of course, like you, that's what your eyes are on.
I don't think you're looking at the division win, but
then you look at the schedule the rest of the
way Bengals twice, the Jets, the Browns, you know, Vikings
backup quarterback Dolphins that are falling apart a little bit there,
(01:39:29):
and then you know you're still gonna get the Steelers
twice as well. So the Ravens have to pretty much
win eight games like in a row with Lamar Jackson,
and that's possible. It is, right, So I can't say, hey,
like we're gonna ignore this, just like last year when
we were talking about the Bengals and say, look, you
can just you can still get to the playoffs with
Joe Burrow, like we're really close at the end, and
(01:39:50):
like you're able to win a bunch of games in
important spots. But the way that the defense played, I thought,
actually for the Ravens against the Rams, where now they
have Kyle howlt'son playing close to the line of scrimmage,
not all the way back at safety, play that sort
of slot corner type role, I think going to help
the physicality of the defense overall. So I personally am not,
you know, betting my future on the Ravens making the playoffs.
(01:40:12):
But I'm also not gonna like just like nail the
final nail in that puff and yet.
Speaker 1 (01:40:17):
Awesome stuff as always, uh, let's first talk about the
stats and Scheme newsletter. For folks who haven't subscribed yet,
what shows up in the rambox.
Speaker 4 (01:40:25):
Appreciate that it's all the advanced data you need. We
built it that if you became head coach of a
team tomorrow, what is all the information that you would
need to see in terms of a matchup. So it's
been fun to write them up. It's been fun to
build a little bit of a different data you can
you know, if you don't understand all the data, we
have a glossary if you do. We also have this
nice color coding. You can see, Okay, well this team
is green in this spot and the defense is red
(01:40:47):
in that spot. It's been really fun to work on.
We've gotten some good feedback and I think it's pretty helpful.
So I would definitely recommend using it.
Speaker 1 (01:40:54):
All rightsoomer sports dot com the Suomer Brain. I was
watching you walk people through it. What is it?
Speaker 4 (01:41:02):
So it's been a lot of fun. It's basically our
whole entire database that you can just pull in a second.
So I used to have to go to like five
different sites if I was trying to pull a specific number.
But we have it set so you can get really
really specific advanced charting day. You can look up what
is the bangles most common pass coverage on third downs
in the second quarter, and it's gonna spit out in
(01:41:23):
a few seconds. This is exactly what happens. I really
enjoyed it. I think it's a better way to get
more people more data. At a higher level. It's still
an open beta, so we're certainly going to have some
issues that kind of pop up here and there. But
it's been fun for me to work on. It's been
fun for me to check things and watch some plays
and say, well, why does the model think it's this coverage,
but I think it's that carverage. It's been cool. I
(01:41:44):
would recommend giving it a spin see what should come out.
Maybe you'll also find what are the numbers that are
going to help the Bangals win this week.

have a Bengals injury report. Are you ready? I know
you're excited. Shamar Stewart full go again for tonight's workout.
(01:43:43):
Bengals getting set to play Pittsburgh's. Same for Lucas Patrick's,
same for a Marius Mimms. That's no change in their
status from yesterday. The guys who didn't go yesterday include
Charlie Jones with rib issue. Tanner Hudson remains in concussion protocol.
Bj Hill nir day yesterday, same today, Trey Hendrickson and
(01:44:04):
Nogo today. Dylan Fairchild a fool go. No Mikeasicki either,
which is no surprise. Bengals and Steelers Thursday night, eight fifteen.
The game is live on ESPN fifteen thirty. Pre game
coverage begins with a collaborative effort between myself, Lance McAllister
and Rocky Boyman. That is gonna be enormous, and we're
looking forward to that three o'clock on Thursday. If you
(01:44:28):
want some UC football talk tonight, the Scott Sanderfield Radio
show is at eight o'clock on seven hundred w WELW.
I get the opportunity to host that show. So if
things start to go poorly the rest of the season,
you can blame me. I'm gonna say the Bearcats finish
the season. I'm a little bit more optimistic than some
(01:44:48):
because I think the schedule breaks their way a little bit.
Speaker 8 (01:44:52):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:44:52):
They do have to play Utah on the road, not
gonna be easy. They do have to play BYU. That
game is gonna be here, not gonna be easy. They
do have to go to Ta not gonna be easy.
Baylor here is not gonna be easy. I think they
will split those four games and finish with three losses.
I don't know that that's gonna be good enough to
(01:45:13):
put him in the Big twelve championship game. I would
walk away from a nine to three season feeling pretty good.
I frankly feel like anything shy of nine wins would
feel disappointing. We will maybe I'll tell Scott Saderfield tonight
that and see what he says. I don't know. This
is not good news if you're a UC basketball fan.
It's not good news if you're Jalen Haynes. Jalen Haynes
(01:45:34):
is the player who transferred to Cincinnati from George Mason
and average more than fourteen and just under seven boards
a game. He has been ruled out indefinitely with what
the school is calling an undisclosed lower body injury. The
Bearcats have an exhibition game on Friday at Michigan, then
won against Arkansas and Fayetteville a week from Friday. Cincinnati
(01:45:57):
opens up against Western Carolina on November third and looks
like will be without Jalen Haynes. Bearcats have I've talked
about this often. I think they have this sort of
team where the pieces are gonna fit better than they
did last year. I felt like last year they acquired
a bunch of talent, thought that they could just figure
(01:46:18):
out a way to make it work. I feel like
with the way they've constructed the roster this year, they've
done exactly that. They've constructed a roster instead of just
compiling talent. Baseball. Tonight, Game two Brewers Dodgers NLCS Peralta
versus Yamamoto. Eight oh eight is tonight's first pitch after
a great game won last night, where Blake Snow was
(01:46:41):
simply terrific. We can take some phone calls, Bob, You're
on ESPN fifteen thirty, Bob, good afternoon. How are you.
Speaker 10 (01:46:50):
Hey?
Speaker 11 (01:46:50):
Mom? Doing great?
Speaker 12 (01:46:51):
Hey?
Speaker 14 (01:46:52):
First off, wanting to give you a report from rapp
Arena on the October third.
Speaker 1 (01:46:57):
Oh the Eric Church show. Yes, how was it?
Speaker 11 (01:47:01):
Well?
Speaker 14 (01:47:02):
We first off got to go backstage. We were in
the pit all night and I was great.
Speaker 1 (01:47:12):
So Eric seemed to meet Bob from Bowling Green.
Speaker 11 (01:47:16):
No, no, I didn't did not get advanced to meet him.
Speaker 14 (01:47:18):
We were we were back there prior to of Eric
coming out.
Speaker 11 (01:47:22):
But what is the scene?
Speaker 1 (01:47:24):
What is the scene like backstage in an Eric Church concert?
Speaker 11 (01:47:28):
Well, you know what we had.
Speaker 14 (01:47:30):
We'd gotten there a little bit late for the first act.
In fact, even so, there weren't many people back there.
There was just, oh my god, so many cases and
things of you know the load of stuff.
Speaker 11 (01:47:43):
That they have to bring into these shows.
Speaker 14 (01:47:46):
And uh so we saw some computer guys and different
things like that, but we we really didn't see a
ton of folks.
Speaker 1 (01:47:53):
All right, very good, What else was on your mind?
Speaker 11 (01:47:57):
Well, didn't want to give you an update.
Speaker 1 (01:47:59):
No oh.
Speaker 14 (01:48:00):
The Blues of course opened up last Tuesday with a
five nothing loss to Minnesota Wild But since then they've
made a trip to Western Canada and actually beat the
Calgary Flames and last night the Vancouver Canucks with the
first two goals of the year by Jimmy Snugger.
Speaker 1 (01:48:18):
Red Jimmy snuggerreod off to a great start. But I've
noticed that Jake Nabors is their leading goalscorer through three games.
Speaker 14 (01:48:25):
Well, he got an empty matter last night, which was
his third, right, But yeah, he's.
Speaker 11 (01:48:32):
He's played well.
Speaker 14 (01:48:33):
Really pretty much the team itself, minus opening night, has
has played very well, very good.
Speaker 1 (01:48:41):
Well, I'm I'm rooting, I'm I'm I'm adopting the Blues.
I guess.
Speaker 14 (01:48:46):
You know what, if you've got an extra hundred bucks,
I'd put it on.
Speaker 2 (01:48:51):
There for them to win the Stanley Cup this year.
Speaker 1 (01:48:54):
You're feeling that confident in your beloved Blues that they'll
win the Cup for the for the second time in
what would that would be six years? When they like
they wanted a few years ago.
Speaker 14 (01:49:03):
Uh, they wanted six years ago, and it would be
the second time in fifty nine years for them.
Speaker 1 (01:49:09):
They're very good, and they still played the Laura Brandigan,
Gloria is still is Jennifisher still no Glory.
Speaker 14 (01:49:16):
Gloria has kind of gone away, and more importantly than that,
their long time announcer.
Speaker 1 (01:49:24):
Uh oh, they fired him. They can. Yeah, I'm not
rooting for them then.
Speaker 14 (01:49:29):
Yeah, no, no, don't know. Yeah, And most people in
town just absolutely hated that fact. But the guy that
took over, he's done the radio for a number of
years and he's really good, good, but you know, it's
it's a cost cutting thing.
Speaker 11 (01:49:46):
But I wanted to tell you one final thing.
Speaker 14 (01:49:49):
Logan Wilson, I think the deal with him, He's playing
for UC the day before every year and every game,
and I think I think that's what really hurt him,
I think more than anything.
Speaker 1 (01:50:03):
And the workload, and you know, the Bearcats have them
playing corner and the Bengals are asking me to play linebacker,
and it's I think it's starting to take both a
physical and mental toll.
Speaker 14 (01:50:13):
Yeah, and I haven't heard anybody else mention that, But anyway,
that's the story.
Speaker 1 (01:50:18):
I think you've gotten to the bottom of it, Bob.
As always, I appreciate the time.
Speaker 11 (01:50:23):
No common on thank you?
Speaker 1 (01:50:25):
Was that plus six thousand for the plus five thousand
for the Saint Louis Blues. Why not care whatever. I'm
a very casual Blue Jackets fan, but we'll plunk down
some some dough in the Saint Louis Blues. We're off
to a blistering uh and two and one start. Hey,
you know the folks at Oakley Greens, they they run
(01:50:46):
this place, but they also run Covington Yard, and we
love Covington Yard. What I love about Oakley Greens and
Covington Yard is there's no ambiguity as to where either
establishment is in Oakley. It's Oakley Greens, Covington Yard it's
in Covington. Well, you know, we got Thursday night football
coming to town. So you got Amazon doing the game.
He got Al Michaels, former voice of the Reds. He
(01:51:08):
got Kirk curb Street and his dog coming to town.
And then you have you got Richard Sherman, you got
Carissa Thompson. Tony Gonzalez is on that set for some reason.
But you also have Ryan Fitzpatrick played for the Bengals.
In two thousand and eight. Ryan Fitzpatrick I think has
the most unique quarterback career of all time because he
(01:51:28):
played for a billion teams, had a bunch of really
good years, and never played in a playoff game. But
also Andrew Whitworth. Andrew Whitworth and Ryan Fitzpatrick do the
Fits and Wit podcast, and they're going to be doing
that show tomorrow night at Covington Yard. And that sounds
amazing because you got Andrew Whitworth wearing the hoodie and
(01:51:50):
the jacket, which if I rock that look, people would go,
what are you doing? He makes it look good. And
then he'll be on set there with Ryan Fitzpatrick and
they may have any number of them amazing guests coming
out to Oakley Green. So tomorrow the Fits and Wit
Live show, The doors are going to open at five
o'clock and the show is going to begin at seven
thirty right there in Covington Yard. So great way to
(01:52:13):
get set for Thursday night football. And you can meet
Andrew Whitworth who's going to be in Canton one day,
and you can meet Ryan Fitzpatrick, who might drive through
Canton one day, and that's going to be a lot
of fun. Tomorrow there at Covington Yard. It's eight away
from six o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 10 (01:52:33):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 7 (01:52:37):
Traffic from the uc Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 6 (01:52:40):

(01:53:03):
