Speaker 1 (00:00):
Like ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Here we Go, Happy Halloween, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Chad
Brendle in promotegar I don't know if I was gonna
get a chance to go go trig or treating. Today
doesn't look great out there, looks a little dreary. Thank
(00:39):
you for choosing me. Really big show, really big show
today on the Moweggers Show. You can find me on
Twitter at Chad Brendle. You can find me bearcatjournal dot com.
Can't find me at bear Cap Journal. I pay somebody
(01:01):
to run that account. I don't I don't pay. I
don't do that. There's already like there's one account is
already more than enough for me, Tarren. I don't need
to I get accused of all the time. You don't
have it like you have a burner. You have to
have a burner. Do you see my account? What would
(01:21):
I need a burner for? What? What could I possibly
say that I don't say on my own account?
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
I'm not a You've known me for a long time now, Tarren.
I'm not a burner type guy.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
No, No, your burner is Chad Brenda.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Right if I if it needs to be said, I'm
gonna say it. I don't. I don't need to hide
behind anything. It is what it is. We are a
heavy guest show today. Should I should I tell what
Moe did to us last night? Tarran, Sure, well, I'll
pull out pull that clip up that you want. Okay, So,
(01:54):
so last night, like I like to when I when
I fill in, I like to have the show done
the night before or and and have it segmented and
slotted out and my notes all in order, and then
like if you know something happens the next day, you
can kind of shuffle and rearrange. But I like going
to bed the night before a show knowing I've got
(02:15):
this skeleton taken care of. And I and I hit
up MO last night and I said, hey, Mo, you
know what's the what what what guests do you have
scheduled today? Like what do I need to uh? What
do I need to have in the skeleton of the show.
And he said, I'm getting ready to send you and
tear in an email And I said, okay. Uh, my
(02:37):
daughter didn't get home from volleyball last night until eleven o'clock,
so I had some time. So I waited. It was
like twelve hours later. I got the I got the
guest list and the notes and everything that I needed
for the day. Nine o one this morning, nine oh
one this morning. I mean, I guess I could pull
up if we're gonna if we're gonna be exact. Uh,
(02:59):
let's see there it is ten oh eight, so eleven hours.
It was eleven hours emailing you and Tarren shortly is
what he said at He replied at eleven o eight
or ten oh eight, and then we got the email
at nine in the morning. Mo also it has as
a hot take on Halloween, Taren. This is this is
(03:21):
from a while ago. This is Mo's Was it with Willy?
Is that who he was with? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:27):
I think this is years ago.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Years ago with Willy. Here's Moe's take on Halloween.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
If you're not home on Halloween night to give kids candy,
you should have somebody come to your house and beat
the hell out of you. Sit at home for two
hours and hand out candy, good candy. Blurge on the candy.
Don't just get the fun size candy, get the big bars.
It's two hours out of your life for the kids.
People who either sit in their homes their dark houses
and hide or leave so they don't have to hand
(03:54):
out candy should be beaten. I don't feel strongly about much.
I feel very strongly about that.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
I won't be giving out candy tonight, Arran. You know why.
I know why because I'm filling in for Mo so
he can do Halloween with his daughter. I can't. I mean,
I guess I'll be home probably like seven point fifteen,
depending on what I decide to do for dinner on
the way home, and it's gonna be raining, it's gonna
(04:22):
be nasty. I would guess there's probably not gonna be
a lot of kids out at that point in time.
I do have some candy at the house that I
will give out, but I don't get to participate, just
like every holiday, Terran, I don't get holidays. Why because
I'm in this chair on holidays so Mo can be
off and Tarn. I don't like Kelsey, my daughter. She
(04:47):
plays volleyball for Simon Kenton in Northern Kentucky. Tonight, Simon
Kenton is playing for the eighth Region championship in volleyball,
so she's gonna be with her team and they play
in Eminent imminence Kentucky. Have you ever heard of that, Arren. No,
it's down by Louisville. It's like an hour and twenty
minutes away from from Independence, so it's like two hours
(05:10):
away from here.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Okay, So that's.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Why she's been getting home late all week. She won't
be home until you know, ten thirty eleven o'clock tonight,
So she's not going to get the trick or treat,
which means, for the first time in fourteen years, Tarn,
there's not going to be Halloween. Can to hit the
Brendel household. Wow, I know, I know.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Those poor trick treaters come into one knock on your
door and no one answers.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
So I mean, you know the dogs can answer. I
don't think they. I mean they probably would. The dogs
are nice that they would, just like I want to
be petted and played with, but they will jump, They'll
probably knock a kid over. I'll get home and I'll
do what I can. I'll do what I can, but
(05:57):
I don't think there's going to be many people out.
The other problem Arran, and most speaks for uh, you
know everybody. We are in one of those neighborhoods like
we are in a like a quiet neighborhood that's off
of a road, that's off of a road, Like, you know,
you gotta you gotta work a little bit to get
to our neighborhood. So guess what that neighborhood is. That
(06:18):
neighborhood is where everybody drops their kids off to go
trigger treating because it's quiet, it's safe, it's kind of
a little off the beaten path, right, so we get
pummeled on Halloween, pummeled. I went. I think I went
through three giant bowls of candy last Halloween. Wow. If
I were to buy regular sized candy bars for Halloween,
(06:40):
it would cost me one thousand dollars. Like it's a
it's a steady stream for two hours at our house.
So you know most you know, he doesn't like to
tell people how to to to fan, how to spend
their money. Calm down, though it's a decade old. I
(07:01):
wonder if his philosophy has changed any, wondering if his
stance on Halloween has softened any since then?
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Probably, And I wasn't. I'm trying to think did he
worked last Halloween?
Speaker 5 (07:13):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (07:14):
Remember I think I did.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
I think I did, because I think I had to
rush home and do a podcast like immediately after this.
So I think what I did is I rushed home,
I put a bunch of candy in the big bowl,
set it outside, and then did my podcast, and then
(07:38):
every like twenty thirty minutes, I would go check the
bowl and fill it back up. Somebody had a great idea.
They put a bowl out and they put a note
in it that said, please take one.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Now you just you figure doing that?
Speaker 2 (07:53):
How's that? The bowl was empty, tarn, so they put
the note in there to make it look like they
had candy in the bowl. And then that's some jerk
kid came and took all the candy out of the bowl.
So all that's left was the bowl with the piece
of paper that said please take one.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
Got you okay?
Speaker 2 (08:10):
So that you kind of get off the hook there, right.
What's your favorite Halloween candy tea? I'm typical Reces. Yeah,
you know, one of my favorites and you don't like it.
Used to mock me when we had back in the
old days, the Glorious, the Glory, the Glory, the glory
(08:32):
days when we had a vending machine and I would
get twigs and you would mock me for getting twigs.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
No, no, no, I mean I eat twigs. There's not
I top my list.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
You told me the twigs. Don't get twigs here because
it's bad, because nobody ever gets it. So the twigs
are stale, and they were they were stale twigs. They
weren't they weren't good. I think I only got twigs
here once. I you know, I love a good Snickers, Yeah,
a good Resi cup. Twigs. I'm a big fan of
one hundred grand those are. Those are kind of old school.
(09:04):
Those don't get talked about much anymore. I feel about
Almond joy I'm not an almond guy.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Me neither.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
So no Payday, it's too it's too much peanut like.
I'm pretty much like the Big Three, like Reci's twigs
and Snickers like those are those are kind of my
my go to. I like you like watching McCall it's
I don't think anybody gives those that. Have you ever
(09:32):
had a watch McAll it? Taran?
Speaker 3 (09:33):
I think I had. I gott me Google a real fan.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
I think I had, though they've got another one now
it's like a who's a whatsie?
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Oh, I know, I definitely didn't have it.
Speaker 6 (09:43):
It's a new watch McCall it. They just changed the
recipe a little bit. Okay, now I haven't had this.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Maybe I'll bring you all watch a McCall it one day.
Watching mccalla's are pretty good, but I've never I don't
think i've ever seen a watch of McCall it. Whoppers.
Whoppers are always good on a Halloween. You know, the
malted milk balls like the whoppers. Not a whopper guy?
Speaker 3 (10:03):
Are you?
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Are you a milk dud guy?
Speaker 6 (10:05):
No? No, back in day other butterfinger bebe guy. Yeah, yeah,
those are great. I do like those. I don't know,
it's Halloween. We're just having some fun with Halloween.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
I'll try to squeeze as many Halloween songs as I can.
How I got back of.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Fine, there's not a lot of hip hop halloweensyet, there's not.
I mean, you know the easy one, right, I'm sure
that's going to be the first one, right. Are you
going to save that for later?
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (10:33):
Say that for later?
Speaker 3 (10:34):
I mean, okay, starting, we'll get the main Halloween song
got the way first?
Speaker 2 (10:39):
Okay, okay, uh, we're going to talk some Bengals today.
I'll get into it next segment. I don't want to
start now and you know, carry on for five minutes
and then be late and throw off the whole hour.
We have a lot of guests early in the show today.
We have Lee Stirling from the Paramount Network that will
join us at three thirty five. My guy, Mike de Coursei,
(11:00):
the Hall of Famer from the Sporting News, will join
us at four, Jay Morrison at four point twenty, and
then Dan Klaskin's at four forty five. So that four
o'clock hour is jam packed. We're wide opening the five
o'clock hour, we'll get to some Bengals, some college basketball
World Series last night, if Mike's out there, hopefully Mike's
(11:23):
not still incarcerated after you know, ransacking the streets last
night in beautiful Los Angeles, Mike and La celebrating a
Dodgers victory, the Dodgers win the World Series? How close
are the Reds to that? Does it even matter? Like
at this point, isn't it just get back to the
playoffs and then we'll start worrying about it from there? Yep.
(11:45):
And what is outside of outside of Joe and Jamar,
what is the Bengals identity? Who are they on offense?
Who they are they on defense? Isn't that when we
start digging down the root of the pro problem. We'll
get to that next since that he's ESPN fifteen thirty.
(12:10):
See Taran, this is not the one I was thinking of.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
It to me, this is the most one. It's the
most prominent, I know.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
But that's not the That's not the one I think
of when I think of my favorite, like hip hop
kind of Halloween song. Well, this is a hip it's pop,
I know.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
I don't know which one you're talking about.
Speaker 6 (12:28):
I'm gonna get the one latest, Okay.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
I just want to get this one out the way.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
I'm doing the dancing here. Good thing the camera's not on,
so we're in a bit. We're in a weird place
with the Bengals right like this, right now. Three and
five is not where anyone expected. If they just an
(13:01):
absolute if, if the season's not going to go in
the tank, you have to beat you have to win,
have to win Sunday against the Raiders, and the Raiders
record is not good. But I was I was out
at an establishment Sunday having dinner with some friends and
my daughter, and the Raiders Chiefs game was on. That
(13:25):
is not a pushover Raiders team, Like they're not you know,
they're They're probably not a playoff team, but they're not
a team that's easy to beat. Especially the Bengals haven't
had it easy with anybody this year. They lost to
the Patriots, who are the worst team in FELLA. Maybe
the Jets, but they lost to the Patriots. They did
(13:49):
not have an easy time with the Carolina Panthers. What
and Tony and I talked about this a little bit
to end sixty and it takes me right in the
direction that I wanted to go today when talking about
the Bengals, What is the identity of this team offensively?
(14:11):
Other than we have Joe Burrow at quarterback and Jamar
Chase at wide receiver. What is the identity of the
Bengals offense? And in that same vein, what is the
identity of the Bengals on defense. I've talked about this
for a while now, and nobody seems to want to
(14:33):
to take that leap to like being on the same
side with me. But part of lou Ana Arumo, like
one of the things that made that defense so effective
in twenty twenty one and twenty twenty two was their
ability every week to kind of be a chameleon, to
(14:53):
match up with what the other team was trying to
do and take away what they do best and use
that to propel your team to wins. Which when you
have a veteran team, when you have a you know,
a team that's kind of right in that prime spot
is you know, that's a that's a good place to be.
(15:18):
But since then they have been trying and trying and
trying to change the players, to evolve the defense to
be ready for this era where Joe Burrow is under
his big contract and then everybody thinks that Jamar Chase
is next, which means less money to spread around, which
(15:40):
means less ability to go out in free agency and
make a splash. But is what are they trying to
be defensively? Because I think that makes it incredibly difficult
to go out and acquire talent. And what you want
(16:01):
to be is ever evolving, ever changing, ever like week
to week, there's no When you looked at the Giants
a couple of weeks ago, you knew what they wanted
to do was pin their ears back and get after
the quarterback. When you look at the Ravens, you know
who they are what they want to do on defense,
the Steelers, the Browns even defensively, who are the like,
(16:27):
what are they drafting to, what are they developing towards?
We want guys that are multiple, we want guys that
are versatile. That's great if you have a group that's
you know, advanced, if you have a group that's taking
four hundred level classes. But the last two years they
(16:53):
look like they're failing one oh one, and a lot
of that is because the guys that they have drafted
and brought in to be the next wave have not worked.
Are they identifying the wrong guys? Are they developing the
wrong way? Are they putting guys into you know, a multiple,
(17:17):
a flexible, a what is supposed to be a diverse
system and it doesn't fit. They're not ready for it.
They're too young that they don't have you know, the
NFL knowledge to do that. I don't know what exactly
the answer is. I think it's a difficult one. But
(17:37):
whatever it is, we are supposed to be entering a
period that this franchise, you know, claims or or says,
and I think it shows that they've tried. They've tried
to do this, They've tried to get the roster ready
for the Joe Burrow is no longer under a rookie contract.
(17:59):
Ear y uh. Unfortunately, they failed miserably. Paul Danner Junior
said this on Tuesday, right on, right on this program
with Moe. Right now, twenty twenty four season, they could
(18:21):
probably get this fixed. I don't know that they will
because I don't know that they're consistently good enough to
go seven and two or whatever they you know, at
worst six and three to close this thing out and
get into the playoffs. But when we get into the
off season, outside of Joe and Jamar T's gonna walk,
(18:42):
Jesse Bates is gone, DJ Reader's gone, Trey Hendrickson's getting
starting to get up there a little bit in age.
What's the core, what's the identity? What's the future of
this franchise? Because the picture is murky outside of you know,
(19:05):
one and nine. It doesn't give you a warm and
fuzzy feeling. And this is supposed to be a year
where it was all in Super Bowl or bust, go
get the ring, And the only bowl this team right
now looks like it's going to play in is the
(19:26):
toilet bowlt Hearn had to get a dad joke in there.
Let's take a break. Lee Starling coming up next, since
that he's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
Thirtys Take on the Raiders coverage starts Sunday morning at
nine on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Rolling along Hour number one. Chad Brenda from Oeggar and
Moby Back. There's money to be made on Monday, right
the Tony and Football Show. So mob be here Monday.
First guest of the day. Let's get it Roland. Let's
go to our friend of the show, longtime friend of
(20:19):
the show, Lee Sterling from the Paramount Sports Network Paramount
Sports dot Com. Lee, how's it going with my friend?
Speaker 7 (20:26):
I'm good, I'm good. The double loss of the bear
Cats and the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
It's it's Halloween, so he's uh, he's got. He's got
a very strong stance on Halloween and uh his I
remember his daughter is in second grade. Mine's a freshman
in high school. Now, I remember those second grade days,
and I do they are? You know why?
Speaker 8 (20:53):
Lee?
Speaker 2 (20:53):
This is the first year my daughter is. She's got.
She plays volleyball. Her team is playing for the regional
championship tonight. So there will be no how no Halloween
at the Brendel household this year, which means there's no
dad tax, which means I'm not going to have an
abundance of uh many.
Speaker 7 (21:12):
What's what's your favorite? What's your favorite candy bar?
Speaker 4 (21:16):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (21:16):
I've got it. I love the big three what I
consider the big three RECs, Snickers, and Twigs. So any
of those three and I'm happy.
Speaker 7 (21:25):
We're almost exactly like reces, uh Snickers. And I'm a
baby Ruth guy.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Okay, I don't mind the baby solid.
Speaker 7 (21:36):
Back in the day, baby Ruth and knee high Orange.
I didn't eat even eat dinner? Are you?
Speaker 2 (21:42):
Are you a kid cat guy? I like kit cats?
Speaker 7 (21:43):
Do I can do my kit cats? But yeah, just
you know, I think I like the peanuts in there more. Yeah,
the wafers are nice.
Speaker 4 (21:51):
You know.
Speaker 7 (21:52):
You know when my kids used to go out for
trigg or treating, you know that was that was in there,
but with not quite.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
Top three kid cat like, that's the health candy bar, right,
because the wafers are healthy myself?
Speaker 7 (22:03):
Right, well, at least you try to explain it off
that way.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
Exactly, Lee, What do we got this week? You're three
and our last week, he killed it.
Speaker 7 (22:11):
YEP. So let's keep rolling here. We're gonna go to
the Ohio State Penn State game. Normally we don't delve
into the toughest game of the weekend. Here two top
five opponents. But I think there's a clear right side here. Now.
I've been going against James Franklin for years in big games.
Me too. He can't get the job done, doesn't have
the talent, and he plays too conservative. But if you
(22:34):
go back and watch that game against USC, he was
down fourteen points a BAF, he rolled out a couple
of trick plays. Both of them worked, and they just
made adjustments and shut down a USC offense that had
a lot of speed on the outside. Similar to Ohio
State here. Now they get to play at home, not
on the road. Ohio State, you know they not. I
(22:56):
don't think they are who we thought they were. I
thought they were a top two most talented team. Now
they're down to a third string offensive tackle. Couldn't run.
Last week against Nebraska, their top two guys, Judkins and Anderson,
only amounted fifty four combined rushing yards on twenty carries.
And I don't care whether due Lar plays or it's
(23:16):
even Vo Prindle approval of both those guys. I think
have different skill sets and you can get the job
done here. I think the wrong team's favorite. I like
Penn State twenty seven to twenty three. Str right up.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
I look, if you believed Will Howard was a championship quarterback,
that's on you. That's on you, right right. Keep it going.
Speaker 7 (23:39):
Yeah, he's not the guy.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
No, So you're into the NFL now Baltimore. Denver is
next up?
Speaker 7 (23:49):
Yeah. So think Baltimore's good, but their defense is so
banged up. I mean their defensive line and secondary. I
mean they're playing some second third team guys. Guy, and
you need depth here to chase after bow Nicks. Here's
a guy who all of a sudden, everything's clicking, completing
almost sixty seven percent of his passes at a rookie
(24:11):
last four games, nine touchdowns, just one interception. Hey, I
know how good Lamar Jackson is. He's go on pace
for four thousand yards and a thousand yards rushing here.
But I think that defense is going to do him in.
And how about underdogs at seven or more points in
the NFL this year fourteen and six. Baltimore escapes twenty
six twenty.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
The Bengals unfortunately have been the favorite in the couple
of those games. Yeah right, well, let's get to Cincinnati
and Las Vegas.
Speaker 8 (24:41):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
So the Raiders are better than people think. That's what
I think.
Speaker 7 (24:46):
Yes, yeah, yeah, I would agree with that, and they
play hard. They didn't quit even in the game last week.
The Bengals I think are better than a three to
five team here on offense, especially if T Higgins is
able to play after missing last week with that quad injury.
It's it's too difficult to trust their defense though in
(25:07):
this point spread range. Twice this season they've lost straight up.
As you mentioned, seven and a half point home favorites
to the Patriots and also the Commanders. Cardner Minshew is
the best option at quarterback going forward for this team.
Defense doesn't quit. They have a bye weeklet next week
that could either mean all out intensity or meling at
(25:29):
an effort here. And I just think the Bengals, I
know it's a must game, but they got the Ravens
up next week on the road here, so a loss
is not going to be able to be sustainable. But
I think they escape twenty.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Four to twenty one, So take the points. But the yep,
all right, right, and then let's let's get the free
play of the week. This one, This one's kind of fascinating.
Speaker 7 (25:52):
Yep, it is the Ducks. Are they going to just
continue to roll on? Say, undefeated and also rank and
undefeated in the Big Ten? Or can Michigan keep it close?
First five callers to call eight hundred, four hundred nine
to seven, four to one, we will give them this
game for free, eight hundred, four hundred and nine seven
for one. To get Oregon and Michigan on me. Also
(26:15):
five we can't go over every game. I mean, there's
some great games in college football Georgia and Florida, Texas
A and m South Carolina, all these great games in
the pros Detroit in Green Bay. Follow me on YouTube
at Paramount Sports. And how about this on YouTube or
on TikTok. We're gonna give away a one year all
(26:37):
access pass in all five sports that means football, Basketball, baseball, hockey,
and UFC at seven thousand dollars value. We're gonna give
away one. Follow me today, do it on both better
chance to win. We will announce a winner on both
on Saturday morning. So follow me on TikTok at Paramount
Sports and on YouTube at Paramounts for a chance to
(27:01):
win a seven thousand dollars all access pass and if
you want to hop on board. We won seven to
nine weeks. We don't call it November. We call it November.
You can get every single game for thirty one straight days.
Like I said, we won seven to nine weeks, normally
five ninety seven, just three ninety seven one place Paramount
sports dot com.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
Lee appreciate it. I think I'm acting. You're stuck with
me a couple weeks in a row. I'm in next
week doing the pregame show leading into Bengals and Ravens
on Thursday night, So I'll talk to you next Thursday.
Speaker 7 (27:31):
Sounds good, sounds like a plan.
Speaker 2 (27:33):
All right, Thanks, ladies, have a good one. There you go,
Lee Stirling three and oh. Last week he's taking Penn State.
It's taking Denver, and he's taking the Raiders the Bengals
to win, with the Raiders to cover Denver, to cover
(27:53):
I think basically Penn State outright? Will you think about that, Tarren?
Speaker 3 (27:57):
I won't be listening to Lee on that one.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
He's right, like, it's I think Penn State is the
better team. But I don't trust James Franklin and he's
a fraud and he's a phony.
Speaker 6 (28:13):
We know is their quarterback gonna play? He's gonna play.
They're not sure, they said he I think he practiced.
He was limited, but he did throw and like take
some snaps yesterday. Usually, if that's the case on a
on a Wednesday, they're probably trending in the right direction.
But nobody was gonna like just outright say like he's
good to go. It was still like, you know, working
(28:34):
through the week type deal.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
Yeah, give me bucks.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
Of course I want to. I want to take Penn State.
But I just I am not somebody that believes in
James Franklin at all. All right, let's take a break.
We'll get to the phone lines after this. Five one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty Chad Brendle And for Oegar, it's the Moegar
Show since that he's SPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 9 (29:01):
The Christmas Cash Giveaways now at u DF. I love it.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Yeah, I probably haven't thought of this one since last Halloween.
Tarn Ghostbusters too, Yep, give us something, bitch got him money?
Speaker 5 (29:40):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
Classic says it that he's ESPN fifteen thirty. This is
why you're the goat, this is why you're the best.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
Well like you playing, but don't want to get to
a fringe.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
I know, we get I know, I know, I know,
Jack fan Lovelin Bengals biggest issue, Jeff, this is a
long list. What do you got at the top.
Speaker 9 (30:06):
Top of the afternoon to your Chad, Well, I got
a lot of thoughts. I mean, I ask you first,
I would ask you first. Uh don't you concur that
this is, without question the biggest point of fan media
criticism of the Bengals in the Borough era as we
(30:28):
sit here today, which is what Well, I mean in general?
Don't you think there's more criticism right now?
Speaker 2 (30:36):
I thought I didn't know if you had one specific Yeah.
I mean, yeah, Jeff, watching this team, they're not They're
not good.
Speaker 9 (30:46):
They are and and I'm not going to make excuses
for the team.
Speaker 7 (30:50):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (30:50):
You know, I have some thoughts. At first is we've
got two Hall of Fame coaches in our division, and
our coaches and coaching like a hall of Fame coach,
and I should be respectful of that fact. That's he should,
he should uh you know, be coaching more to their standard.
I mean, I hate to say it, but I've always
(31:10):
been jealous of Tomlin and he's my favorite Steeler ever.
And that's very very hard to say, right, I mean
Terry Bradshaw. I had a lot of respect for Terry
Bradshaw as well, by the way called his own plays.
I know in this era with the complex offenses, that
didn't happen very often. But the first thing I do
if I'm Zach Taylor, as I say, Joe, you've got
the offense you're calling.
Speaker 8 (31:32):
The plays this quarter against the Raiders, that the first
thing I.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
Do think the better I'm gonna say something that everybody
talks about the play caller. In Zach Taylor, Jeff, I'm
not sure if the plays.
Speaker 8 (31:49):
They don't talk about picture or they.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
Don't know, they don't talk about the plays like it
doesn't matter. The play caller doesn't matter nearly as much
if the plays aren't good.
Speaker 9 (32:01):
Well, that's true, but I've seen a lot of really
good plays. I just haven't seen enough of him, and
I've seen enough offensive line improvement that I just don't
flat out don't understand that throwing the ball down field more.
But my point is, you said I've got a lot
of points. Let me make my biggest point, and that
is this we like, we aren't having this conversation, nor
are we going through this period of intense criticism. If
(32:24):
T Higgins is on the field, we're one in seven
With T off the field. We find out what Thursday
Friday against the Patriot that he's not playing, and we
went the Patriots game with T. We went last week
with T Okay, So at what point in time does
the training staff it's like just T, I mean, hamstring's galore.
What's the hubbards in this cryptic injury that's never on
(32:46):
the report, but he's got some sort of hamstring injuries
and he's not playing it all well, at least in
terms of putting pressure on the quarterback. We don't have
it except for Henderson, So that's an issue. Hill was
that with a hamstrings? Ranks with a hamstring? He with
a lingering hamstring?
Speaker 2 (33:00):
Oh quad?
Speaker 9 (33:00):
What's with all the leg injuries? And at what point
in time do we talk about.
Speaker 8 (33:03):
The training staff with this team?
Speaker 9 (33:05):
And again, if he's on the field, we win football games,
and that's the biggest thing.
Speaker 2 (33:10):
But the games Tea's out thirty percent of the games
with Yeah.
Speaker 10 (33:16):
Yeah, so that's it.
Speaker 9 (33:18):
I'm just telling you, Chah, that's it. We pay him
twenty two million for his final season with the team.
People think we're.
Speaker 8 (33:23):
Signing them both. It's just ludicrous. It's two number one receivers.
Speaker 9 (33:26):
You're not gonna sign them with Burrow, so we're gonna
sign Chase, which, by the way, I thought Chase should
have taken the compromise.
Speaker 8 (33:33):
But I digress. But the point being, you do.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
It's not your money.
Speaker 9 (33:37):
We've last year he's on the field half the time.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
Yeah, I mean at some point, I don't think it
with Tea at least, I don't think it's the training staff.
I think it's Tea's legs.
Speaker 8 (33:48):
Well, I know they go back to college.
Speaker 9 (33:49):
I'm not saying I mean that's but at the same time,
at the same time, what about the other hamstrings?
Speaker 8 (33:55):
About every other team having five ham strings?
Speaker 2 (33:57):
I don't sure, But in this specifcific situation with t
his legs just don't they don't. They don't provide enough
support about it.
Speaker 9 (34:08):
Because he's you know, say that kind of buzzed me
that that here's the point of avail.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
How many wide receivers have they drafted and brought in
here to help with this problem, and none of them
have been No Chase, I.
Speaker 9 (34:23):
Mean, I mean I'm talking about of course.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Chase was a top top five pick. Of course.
Speaker 8 (34:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (34:31):
Well, the point is when they talk about the draft
and they say we've missed on the draft, there's a
bunch of players.
Speaker 8 (34:37):
We've we've hit as well, not lately.
Speaker 9 (34:40):
Well, I feel good about Jenkins and uh, and I'm
not so certain. I don't feel good about Burton. I'm
not quite on that way, like a lot of their fans.
And yeah, Miles Murphy very disappointing so far. He's vapor man.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
With a search warrant.
Speaker 9 (34:57):
I see you sigh a lot on Twitter. But I
don't care about his fashion. I care about him putting
people on the ground, right. So yeah, and again I'm
not belittling. There have been a lot we've missed on too.
But let's let's face it, as long as Joe Burrow
is upright, we're gonna be in it. And in my opinion,
we've got our chance on Sunday to you know, see
(35:19):
what we're made of and go from there. It appears
that we're gonna be without Tea again. It appears we're
gonna be withotorlanda Brown junior, and we're gonna try to
have them ready for the Ravens. It's not all said
and done, but I'm telling you the reason we're in
this situation right now, more than any other reason, is
that T. Higgins has not been on the football field.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
That's fair, all right, thanks, Jeff, appreciate it. I mean,
but but but what he just said. We've got Joe Burrow.
Joe Burrow's on the team, So losing one of your
two elite wide receivers, the end result shouldn't be automatic loss.
They're one and seven without T Higgins. Mike, of course,
(35:57):
he coming up top of the hour after this Cincinnati's
ESPN fifteen thirty. This report is sponsored by Mason.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
Bengals Take on the Raiders. Coverage starts Sunday morning at
nine on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (36:20):
Here we go the mo Eggar Show. I'm not Moegar.
Chad Brendle in for the day. Happy Halloween to everyone.
Stay dry. If you're going out and about tonight, get
some good candy. Make sure you're uh you're you're exercising
the Dad tax. Very important. All right, let's let's get
(36:48):
this this show on the road. Here an hour or two,
a lot of guests.
Speaker 10 (36:51):
We are.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
Jay Morrison will join us, talk some Bengals, Dan Klaskins
talk some fantasy football. But first it's all most college
basketball season. We are. We are three, three, four days away,
So it's time to bring in my good friend, the
Hall of Famer from the Sporting News and Big Ten
Network and a bunch of other places. Mike, of course,
he Mike, how's it going. It's time. It's almost time.
(37:15):
We're almost there.
Speaker 11 (37:16):
It is almost time, Chad, it is you know, there's
there are some things going on in the world right
now that it leads you lead one to be just
a bit distracted from fact that we're going to be
hooping on Monday.
Speaker 12 (37:27):
But we are going to be hooping on Monday.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
We'll worry about Tuesday. On Tuesday, we'll worry about Monday first.
Speaker 7 (37:36):
Exactly.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
If the world ends Tuesday, at least we got one day,
one good night of college basketball in there.
Speaker 7 (37:42):
You go.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
Uh, this is uh. It's been a rough five six
years in the Queen City. Twenty seventeen. Xavier's a one seed,
Cincinnati's a two seed. Chris Mack and Mick Cronin are
deeply rooted and established at they're alma maters. Things looked
like they were going to be great for the foreseeable future.
(38:03):
That has not been the case until this year. But
it's not at all bad.
Speaker 12 (38:10):
I mean there have been moments in there. I remember in.
Speaker 11 (38:15):
Two thousand and twenty Cincinnati pulling off that victory on
the last day of the regular season to the tray.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
Scott Tippin against Temple.
Speaker 12 (38:26):
Yes, I mean, who could forget that?
Speaker 7 (38:28):
Right?
Speaker 11 (38:29):
And so there was that, and then there was the
Xavior victory over pitt which I was in attendance in
Greensboro to see them reach the Sweet sixteen.
Speaker 12 (38:40):
In Sean Miller's first year. So there have been moments.
Speaker 11 (38:42):
It's not been an underinterrupted festival of that coursness, but
it's been you know that, there still have been good
moments here and there, And you now have two really
excellent coaches in place again, as you mentioned before, that's
what was the case in twenty eighteen. Well now you've
(39:03):
got it again with Sean Miller and West Miller, and
I think that's a good place to start.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
Let's start with with Cincinnati. Here, they maintained six of
their top eight scorers. They had great roster retention, which
is not the easiest thing to pull off in this
day and age. They were close in a lot of
games in the Big Twelve last year, they did not
get over the hump enough times. This year they add
(39:31):
Dylan Mitchell to kind of replace that John Newman's Swiss
army knife role, even though their games are a little
bit different. You add some help on the perimeter with
Connor Hickman, you add a young big and Arrington Page.
What is your you know, ten thousand foot view of
this Cincinnati team that is in the top twenty five
(39:51):
in the AP and even though their twentieth in the country,
they're projected a robust sixth in the Big twelve.
Speaker 11 (39:59):
Yeah, yeah, you know, those things can be really funny
though the way conferences work now. I mean, Northwestern was
projected i think close to double digits in each of
the previous two years and finished second and third, and
and Nebraska last year was definitely double digits and finished second.
So you can you can make up a lot of ground,
(40:21):
uh and and and make people look bad in terms
of their prognostications. If you build the right formula and
you and you continue to execute on that formula. And
Cincinnati doesn't have as much formula reconstruction to do as
a lot of teams. I mean, you look down the
road to Kentucky. They may have a great year. I'm
not saying they're not going to, but they have a
(40:43):
lot of of of work to do to become a
team because they have a new coach with pretty much
all new players. And that's that you know that that's
a challenge and it's not unconquerable, but it's a challenge.
Speaker 12 (40:56):
West doesn't have as much of that to do.
Speaker 11 (40:59):
He'll he'll be able to when when when they I
mean I when they went in on the first day
of practice and he said run this. Six of the
guys knew exactly what he wanted and had already done it.
Speaker 12 (41:10):
And that's a that's an advantage because.
Speaker 11 (41:12):
Then you're trying to figure out things from a you know,
from further down the road, whereas other teams are trying
to figure out their very beginnings. And so much importance
happens in November and December.
Speaker 12 (41:25):
I get yelled at a lot.
Speaker 11 (41:26):
As someone who does brackets for Fox Sports, I get
yelled at a lot.
Speaker 12 (41:31):
Why does November and December matter so much?
Speaker 11 (41:34):
Well, it's basically November and December are when you and
your league establish.
Speaker 12 (41:39):
What how how tough is your league, how good is it?
Speaker 11 (41:42):
And so therefore, what is a big twelve In the
Cincinnati's case, what's a big twelve win worth? That matters
because that that influences the selection committee. So if Cincinnati
does what I think they can do with with the
advantage of having so many players in place, and add
some key new ones, I think they can get off
(42:03):
to a really good start and that can really help
them when they get into Big twelve play.
Speaker 2 (42:08):
Something I've talked about a lot this week, Mike. We
are in that portion. It's over now, I guess. But
where everybody is releasing their you know, top one hundred
players in college basketball, and I don't think any of
the guys from Cincinnati made any of those lists that
I saw, you know, Gisel James, Dan Skillings, Dylan Mitchell,
Simas Lukashis are you know, thought to be kind of
(42:30):
those top four guys. They were all kind of right
on the outside in a lot of these lists. Does
not having a top one hundred player concern you, especially
in a league where they're you know, most every night,
that theoretically would mean that the other team has the
best player in any given game in this conference.
Speaker 11 (42:51):
Yeah, what it means is I don't think they'll win
the national championship. But I don't think that it means
anything beyond that. Okay, I really don't. I mean you,
so much of basketball is about team, and do you
have guys who are really capable. I mean, Dylan Mitchell
at one point was a top twenty five talent coming
(43:13):
out of high school. Minimum you know, I mean, so
if he can get to his potential, and he really struggled,
I think sometimes with attension to detail, and I think
sometimes he was blocked a little bit by guys who
were more experienced. So maybe now there's an opportunity for him,
as you mentioned before with Newman Gohn, maybe there's an
(43:34):
opportunity that he can just seize and say, look, if
I don't get this done now, it's never going to
get done. And look at what I'm going to leave
on the table. So that he has the ability to
be one of those guys. But no one out there
who's doing a projection for like a Karl Malone list
or a joy serving list is going to put him
on there.
Speaker 12 (43:54):
He hasn't done it yet, but that doesn't mean he can't.
Speaker 2 (43:58):
Across Town and Xavier, there was still quite a bit
of turnover, but maybe most importantly, they get Jerome Hunter
and Zach fremantle Back. I really like the the addition
of Ryan Conwell. I think they've got a couple transfers
that are going to be good. But I really think
Daveon McKnight is critical for this Xavior team because I
(44:20):
think from what we saw at points in time last year,
if there's more consistency to it, he might be the
best league guard in the conference.
Speaker 12 (44:29):
And point guard is such an important position.
Speaker 11 (44:32):
Some of the teams that I look at as will
they contend for the national championship? And I look at
oh I really like everything about this team, and Alabama
is a great example. I like everything about Alabama's team,
But do they have a point guard who can do that,
who can take him those you know, those last two
three games. I'm not one hundred percent sold on that.
(44:52):
I'm not one hundred percent sold that Yukon has that.
Speaker 12 (44:55):
I'm not you know, I know that Kansas does because.
Speaker 11 (44:59):
But that's you know that, So you got a guy
like McKnight, that's that's got to be exciting for you
because you know that the most important position on the
floor is covered as well. You know that you have
a number one option with Freemantle coming back, and that
means that you have someone to point the offense in
the right direction and someone to be the right direction.
(45:21):
I was intrigued to hear Sean Miller in an interview
I think it was with Lance a week or two ago,
to talk about that Zach used his time off to
get himself in really good shape, and not that he
was I mean, it was always a fit athlete, but
what was standing between Zach and being a tremendous college
(45:42):
basketball player and not just a really good one and
being an NBA prospect was dynamism and quickness on defense and.
Speaker 12 (45:50):
Being able to cover guys laterally.
Speaker 11 (45:53):
And I saw I'm curious to see whether what Sean
was talking about with him becoming, you know, and even
more dynamic athlete, whether that, you know, that translates to
him being a more complete basketball player because he's always
been a first rate offensive player and he contributes on
defense by being a great rebounder. But if he can
(46:14):
cover in space and change games that way, then then
Xavier can be that much better.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
That's the big question for them right post the interior defense, defense,
rim protection. I think they'll be okay. I don't think
they'll be, you know, an elite defensive squad on the perimeter,
but they've got enough veteran guys. I think they'll be
okay there, especially in the Big East, which actually has
some size and some some presence at the center position.
That's probably going to be their biggest challenge. They might
(46:43):
score eighty five to ninety a game, she's got to
stop somebody from else doing the same.
Speaker 12 (46:48):
Absolutely true.
Speaker 11 (46:50):
There have been teams that have really thrived by being
great offensive teams in that league. We've seen a lot
of teams over the last three four years, and I
mean Creighton got much better defensively last year, but.
Speaker 12 (47:02):
They there were years before last year when they.
Speaker 11 (47:06):
Really didn't do great on defense, but still were able
to be highly successful.
Speaker 12 (47:11):
In the league by being a great offensive team.
Speaker 11 (47:14):
Sewan's attention to defense is such that they're always going
to guard as well as their personnel allows them to.
And so I think from that standpoint, I think they'll
be fine. They're not gonna be Ken Palm's number one
or number two defense, but I think they also won't
be Ken Palms one hundred and twenty fifty defense or
(47:35):
something like that.
Speaker 2 (47:36):
Real quick down in Lexington. I don't know what they're
gonna be, but I've watched Mark Pope teams. They're gonna
be fun to watch. They might make you want to
pull your hair out on those nights that they're you know,
six for thirty six from three, but they're gonna be entertaining.
Speaker 12 (47:52):
They're gonna have.
Speaker 11 (47:52):
Those knights where they're six for thirty six, but they're
also going to have some nights where they go fourteen
for twenty eight and make it really hard to be.
Speaker 12 (48:00):
In the gym with them.
Speaker 11 (48:02):
We saw last year that what he did at BYU,
he was able to go on the road in a
really terrific league and get wins. It wasn't just you
came to Provo and you struggled. They won on the
road too, and that was impressive. Now that they didn't
have a great NCAA tournament by you know, losing the
Duquane in the first round, but I think that he
(48:24):
was he was an ideal choice for Kentucky in the
circumstance that they created for themselves.
Speaker 12 (48:30):
I'm still I will never endorse.
Speaker 11 (48:34):
What was you know, how how the last few years
were handled, the impatience that some Kentucky fans showed.
Speaker 12 (48:41):
I believe in excellence.
Speaker 11 (48:44):
It's going to come back around, and I still think
that was a mistake.
Speaker 12 (48:48):
But they did not air in the hiring process.
Speaker 11 (48:51):
They hired someone who can really coach, who's going to
get really good players there, who's going to play a
fun style, and who very well may have grand success
in the NC Double A Tournament in the coming years.
Speaker 2 (49:02):
Just for Terran, did concern about Ohio State this year
or do you think once they get some time together
they'll get things rolling?
Speaker 8 (49:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (49:09):
I think I think they have the ability.
Speaker 11 (49:11):
And now the problem is that the they're one of
the teams that what I call like one hundred percent team.
Speaker 12 (49:18):
If everything goes right.
Speaker 11 (49:20):
Uh, then they're gonna you know, they're gonna be right
there in the high level of the big ten, five, six,
seven something like that in an eighteen team league.
Speaker 12 (49:29):
That's a high level.
Speaker 11 (49:30):
If everything goes wrong, they're going to really struggle. And
if everything turns out in the middle of that. Uh,
then they they'll probably struggle to make the show. But
that's you know, that's that's kind of where they are
right now. I can see it happening. I'd like to
see point guard play be not just productive, but consistent.
That's that's for me, the big thing. I think that
(49:53):
point they've gotten points and assists out of the point
guard spot, but not always consistent decision making in crunch time.
There's a lot of crunch time into Big ten man
because there's not a big difference between number one and
number eighteen.
Speaker 12 (50:06):
There's just a lot of good basketball there.
Speaker 11 (50:08):
So you have to make good decisions down the stretch
and that's been a problem for Ohio State the last
year or two.
Speaker 2 (50:15):
Mike, it's always a pleasure. Is it is that time?
I am ready. I can't wait. Hopefully you'll be down
a couple times for some Big twelve action this year.
Speaker 12 (50:23):
Yeah, that'd be cool. I'd really like to do that.
Speaker 2 (50:26):
Have you been to the new Arena yet? Yes?
Speaker 12 (50:29):
I was there on opening night.
Speaker 2 (50:30):
That's right, you are. I'm getting old. I'm forgetting things appreciated, Michael.
Speaker 12 (50:37):
I was also there on closing night for Steve Alford,
so to speak.
Speaker 2 (50:40):
Yeah, thanks, Mike, we'll talk soon.
Speaker 8 (50:46):
Take care.
Speaker 2 (50:47):
All right, There you go, Mike the course. You can
find him on Twitter at TSN Mike. He's been a
mentor and a good friend for a long time, and
it's it's always great talking college basketball with him. We
will be back with Jay Morrison Bengals Talk dot Com.
This is Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (51:03):
In Lynetti, brought to you in part by Modern Office
Methods on the official home of the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN
fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (51:20):
Rolling along a busy hour or two. Always a pleasure
to talk with Mike to Corsi. We follow that up
with another journalism legend, Jay Morrison, now from Bengals Talk
dot com. Jay, for a guy of your stature, it's
got to be tough working for James Rapeene, isn't it.
Speaker 8 (51:41):
That's great? I love it. I'm not just saying that
because he pays me.
Speaker 2 (51:46):
It is kind of nice to be in an environment
where you can you can kind of be free, right.
I'm in a similar situation as James. We get to
do a bearcat journal what we kind of want to do.
That's it's a fun environment to be in.
Speaker 8 (52:00):
Yeah. I mean that's I always say when people ask
me about my job, I say, it beats working for.
Speaker 2 (52:05):
A living exactly.
Speaker 8 (52:06):
You enjoy what you do. You add years to your life.
Speaker 2 (52:09):
You know, it's not been enjoyable Jay covering this Bengals team,
I guess they Oh, they're.
Speaker 8 (52:15):
Still fun to cover, but they're not too fun to
root for.
Speaker 2 (52:18):
I don't think they are. I mean, it's it's hard
to believe when you're watching this team. Like we thought
this team had a chance to be like a super
Bowl contender, and I know, like they almost beat the Ravens,
you know, they they almost beat the Chiefs, but when
it comes down to it, they're three and five and
they just don't look like one of the even mid
(52:40):
level to better teams in football.
Speaker 7 (52:44):
Time.
Speaker 9 (52:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (52:44):
I mean I think that the problem is you you
are relying on a lot of young guys to take
steps and develop, and that was the assumption is that
would happen this year, and it really hasn't, and some
of the guys have actually regressed, and so I think
that's what's holding them back. You look at Joe, you'll
(53:05):
get Jamar. You look at this offense. They've been pretty
solid outside of the last few weeks. The run game
hasn't really been there, but the O line's been better
in terms of protection. Joe's playing as well as he
ever has, so that's not the issue. That the defense
is what's holding this team back. And to some degree,
special teams with you know, the drops hold or otherwise
they win the Baltimore game, Evan other miss field goals,
(53:28):
But that's everything points to the defense right now.
Speaker 7 (53:31):
Though.
Speaker 8 (53:31):
They need to get those young guys going and in
a hurry that the second half of the season, the
defense is going to be the difference on whether the
team can make a run or not, and not to
run to the Super Bowl. I'm talking about a run
to get into the playoffs and just have a chance.
Speaker 2 (53:46):
They've played, you know, outside of Baltimore coming up like
they they've played these the the majority of the strength
of they're schedule in terms of the offenses they're going
to face. Do you think that will maybe be enough
to kind of get this defense kick started after you know,
the Oakland game and then you get past Baltimore the
back half of the schedule, they won't be challenged as much.
Speaker 8 (54:11):
Yeah, you wouldn't think. I mean, you look at it
that the defense has played well against the Giants and
the Browns and the Panthers, and a lot of these
games coming up, those offenses look like those teams, but
it'sburg looks like they found suffing the Russell Wilson. They
may be better than what we're giving them credit for
right now. What the total body of work is same
with Cleveland. I mean, now that Deshaun Watson's out and
(54:33):
Jamis Winston's in there, I think that offense is going
to be pretty formidable by the time the Bengals seed
them again on that Thursday night game. So yeah, it's
like that, anytime you look at it, you look too
far out of ahead of on the schedule, and you just
you can't really gauge what's the easy game where the
hard games are going to be because it always flips.
Speaker 2 (54:51):
I honestly thought, Jay that if Jamis would have come
in when Deshaun Watson got hurt, I think there's a
pretty good chance the Bengals lose that one.
Speaker 8 (55:00):
Yeah, a real chance of that. And I still I
still think there are some shenanigans there about them saying
that dtr had a hurt finger, because that's the only
way they could get James in the game is that
if another quarterback separate an injury, it's like, oh, yeah, finger.
You can't really prove that.
Speaker 2 (55:14):
You think somebody snapped a finger on the sideline over there, like, hey,
get his finger, get his pinky ones throwing it.
Speaker 8 (55:21):
I think I don't think they actually hurt him. I
think they just told him yeah.
Speaker 11 (55:24):
I know.
Speaker 2 (55:25):
It's like the get down. You know, the guy standing,
the guys standing there, and all of a sudden, he
just collapses on the field and there happens to be
a coach on the sideline pointing to him to get
down right can offensively, it feels like it's in fits
and starts, like in stretches and the Eagles game we
(55:45):
saw this and stretches like that first drive, they looked dominant,
like it controlled the ball, smart plays, easy plays, like
they they just kind of dictated the flow, and then
they go ice cold for a little bit of time.
Where is the rhythm there?
Speaker 5 (56:04):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (56:05):
Maybe just the stress of feeling like the defense is
probably not going to force upon ever, so we have
to be perfect all the time.
Speaker 8 (56:14):
I don't know if it's the mindset of the defense.
I think it's just the actual performance of the defense.
You look, they only had three possessions in that first
half because the defense couldn't get off the field and
so it is harder to get in a rhythm. And
they had a touchdown, a field goal, and a missed
field goal, so they should have scored on all three
of those possessions. So I think that's a big part
(56:37):
of it. I don't know that they play call or
they perform knowing, hey, we've got to get the thirty
to have a chance to win this, But I do
think that when you're rolling, you have a seventeen play
drive to start off the game, and then you're sitting
over there for a long time while the other team
takes a bunch of time off the clock, it is
hard to kind of keep that rhythm going. And part
of it, too, is you know that the run game
(56:58):
just wasn't there, and they they couldn't play off of that.
They were able to have enough balance on that opening
drift because everything's scripted, and then you get into the
flow of the game and you're calling on what you're
seeing and what no run game at all. I mean,
Joe Burrow's eight yard scramble was the longest run they had.
Other than that, Chase Brown had a five and Sech
Moss had a four. It's just it's really hard to
(57:19):
get an offense gore on when it's lopsided like that.
Speaker 2 (57:23):
There's been a lot of talk about this group of
young guys, the drafting of this franchise since you know
Joe and Jamar what has come after that, which is
when they kind of knew like this is when the
Burrough rookie contract ends, This is when we need to
you know, we're gonna need to backfill a lot of
(57:44):
these young guys, and it hasn't happened yet for most
of these guys. Do you think it's drafting, Do you
think it's development? Do you think it's a combination of both?
Like where does where does the disconnect lie that guys
Joseph A, sim Miles Murphy and Kam Taylor Britt and
you know that that they're not getting what maybe they
expected from these guys.
Speaker 8 (58:07):
Yeah, I fin lean more towards the development side of it,
because if you think about it, when you look at
these draft picks, other than Jackson Carmen, none of them
are like, WHOA, we didn't expect that guy to go
that early. They're they're picking the guys right about in
the in the realm where they expect to be picked.
I think people are sometimes surprised about which position they
target at times, but it's not It's not as though
(58:29):
they're drafting guys two rounds ahead of where everybody else
has them slotted.
Speaker 2 (58:34):
So I do.
Speaker 8 (58:35):
I think that that's a big part of it is
a development and specifically with the offensive line and the
defensive line, that is what's costing them right now. I
am to say the secondary as well to a lesser degree.
That's been an injury issue back there. But dack Hill
was playing well finally and he goes down. It's just
(58:57):
I would come down on the development side of this
big the bigger indictment as opposed to who they're drafting.
Speaker 2 (59:03):
You want to know, the most angry I've ever seen
about someone, Seeman seen someone be about a Bengals draft pick.
Speaker 8 (59:10):
What's that.
Speaker 2 (59:11):
I was at an AAU tournament watching some high school
basketball prospects the third day of the draft, I guess
it would have been a Saturday, and Danny Hurley, Yukon's
head coach, comes up to me and says, probably forty
seven expletives about the Drew sample pick. We're bleeping taking
(59:33):
a bleeping blocking tight end and the bleeping second round.
What the bleep and bleep and bleep and bleep. I
don't know that.
Speaker 8 (59:41):
He's still here and he's been very good at.
Speaker 2 (59:43):
What they drafted him to do, I know, but that
he But.
Speaker 8 (59:47):
Yeah, I think everybody was scratching their head on that one.
Speaker 2 (59:50):
I've never seen anyone so mad about something that like
minor in my entire life, and literally the rest of
the day that I saw Danny, that's all. I don't
get chet. I don't get it, like we got we're gonna,
we got Joe Burrow, We're taking Drew sample in the
second round. It was great.
Speaker 8 (01:00:07):
That's what lit the fire under him to become a
better head coach and to win back to back national time.
Speaker 2 (01:00:12):
It probably was I'm not taking a Drew sample in
the second round with the Yukon Huskies. Did you get
to see him at all when he was in town?
Is Ruler in the jungle?
Speaker 8 (01:00:23):
Yeah, just up on the stage, But yeah, we it's
too close to kickoff to make your way over there.
I would like to, you know, say hello to Tyler
iich with this weekend too. It's just not sure you
gonna be able to make that happen.
Speaker 2 (01:00:34):
That they don't know, like Jay, we actually have jobs to.
Speaker 8 (01:00:37):
Do, right exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
Yes, they take it's just a game.
Speaker 8 (01:00:44):
I do. I meet up with if I have friends
at the game. Sometimes I'll meet up with him in
the stands. I give your three hours before kickoff, so
I've got some time to kill before the game starts.
But yeah, the ruler of the jungle five minutes before kickoff,
that's that's not happening.
Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:00:55):
The Raiders this week, they're They're not good the Raiders,
but in watching them a little bit this year, they're
they're better than their record, or at least they they
they're a team that plays really hard, and they're not
a team that kind of rolls over and lets you
pet their belly like that. They're gonna give you a fight,
(01:01:16):
and that's a dangerous proposition, especially in the the the
vaunted Marvin Lewis return the revenge game.
Speaker 8 (01:01:25):
Yeah, I mean, it's surprising where they're at. It's not
a great roster, but you look at the way they
finished the season last year and then how hard they
played for Antonio Pears and basically forced ownership's hand to
keep them as the head coach. And they're the last
team to beat the Chiefs on that Christmas Day game
last year, and they gave the Chiefs the heck of
(01:01:45):
a game last week. You're right, it's a very dangerous team.
The defense is, it's a spirited group. Anytime you got
Max Crosby out there, you've got a chance. It's the
offense and Gardner Minshew has just been a turnover machine.
They have eleven turnovers in the last four games. And
that's I think where the Bengals win this game, is
forcing some of those getting some short fields for this offense.
(01:02:09):
I wonder though, because one of the issues last week
was getting off the field on third down or Jalen
Hurts was just picking them apart. And on third down,
Gardner minsh is looking for brock powers. He's been everything
as advertised, the riftie tight end out of Georgia and
the Bengals have a history of struggling against tight ends.
And if that, if they get that connection going and
(01:02:30):
they're moving the chains on third down, I could really
see this getting a little bit uneasy for the home team.
Speaker 2 (01:02:36):
No way they go zero five at home right, no way.
Speaker 8 (01:02:40):
Yeah, you wouldn't think I'm not predicting it, But that's
the path. If if the Bengals have a couple of turnovers,
if they can't turn over the Raiders, and if Gardner,
Minshew and rock Powers just start lighting them up on
third down, it's gonna be a it's gonna be, like
I said, an uneasy game in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (01:02:58):
Where can they find you?
Speaker 7 (01:02:59):
Where?
Speaker 2 (01:03:00):
But where's the reset? On all of all things? Jay Morrison?
Speaker 8 (01:03:05):
Yeah, so Bengals Talk dot Com. All my articles are
up there, the Growler podcast with Paul Danner Junior. We
just recorded our latest one this morning. My conversation with
Marvin Lewis is on that one and then on x
at by Jay Morrison. I post the links to all pods,
all stories, all everything.
Speaker 2 (01:03:23):
Is he letting you work with the lease at all?
Or do they keep her separate? She's locked away?
Speaker 8 (01:03:30):
Nah, she comes down on Wednesdays and does her thing,
but she does more video and so yeah, we're trying
to corner the market here with Bengals Talk dot Com.
Speaker 2 (01:03:38):
I love it all right, Thanks Jay, appreciate it. Thanks
v All right, let's take a break when we come back,
maybe a little touch and go keep things moving. And
then Dan Klaskin's with your weekly fantasy football advice to
round out our number two. This is the Malegger Show
right here in since ninetys ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:04:00):
You've been listening to football in Thenetti on the official
home of the Bengals, Cincinnatis ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnatis esp.
Speaker 10 (01:04:12):
All.
Speaker 2 (01:04:12):
Right, here we go, closing out our number two. I'd
like to tell the old school DJ Jazzy Jeff and
the fresh Prince bringing in another good friend of mine.
Speaker 8 (01:04:31):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:04:31):
I really enjoyed getting to see last Friday night as
I was filling in on seven hundred w l W
and he was right here on this microphone getting ready
for high school football tonight. Dan Klaskins from Get Sports
Info from Tri Statefootball dot Com, from the radio from
Sirius XM. You name it, Dan, does it? What's going on?
(01:04:52):
My friend? How are you?
Speaker 9 (01:04:55):
Jed?
Speaker 5 (01:04:56):
I always kid, seeing you too, buddy, and good to
catch up with you're here.
Speaker 2 (01:05:01):
Let's let's get right to it. It is mid season.
Let's get to some report cards. Dan, get out the
grade book, put on the glasses and uh, let's get
to the grades.
Speaker 5 (01:05:15):
Well, first of all, I need the glasses to see
the report cards. And the second of all, man, Jeremy
glad we went to school in a time where like
we could still sign our parents signature on report cards
instead of our parents getting emailed about our grade.
Speaker 8 (01:05:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:05:27):
Oh, I got a call from the high school that
told me I had a tenth grader that was failing
two classes, which I have a ninth grader that had
all a's and one B. I was like, what is happening.
Stick to the old system, but send it home in
the envelope, sign it, send it back. Report cards always
made me nervous.
Speaker 5 (01:05:48):
But let's start what's amazing and we'll give one the
Baker Mayfield and man, I'll.
Speaker 2 (01:05:51):
Tell you what.
Speaker 5 (01:05:52):
I hated this guy when he was with the Browns,
but he turned around with the Bucks. Right now he's
QB two on the season and even had a great
game last week. But the two stud receivers I like
him again this week as well. One guy I was
totally wrong about and shy it away from and having
a repeat season, Kymon Williams. We're going to give the
Rams running back in a as well, RB three touchdown
(01:06:13):
machinery score in all but one game this season, and
Terry McLaurin.
Speaker 2 (01:06:17):
Another guy. Maybe it's Jaydon daniels arrival there.
Speaker 7 (01:06:19):
I don't know what it is.
Speaker 5 (01:06:20):
He's a top ten receiver wide receiver seven after three weeks.
Jim for some apps. I mean I did list Patrick
Mahomes as enough. You know he has yet to have
a top ten finish all season. But really, I think
I might have to give an F plus to Anthony Richardson.
Here's a guy with a fourth round ADYP pench for
Choe Flaco. Bengal fans think it's bad. I mean, it's
(01:06:41):
just at least you don't have that owner. But the
Mere White RB sixty nine on another fourth round pick
that has been faded out. And then finally Calvin Redley
wide receiver fifties getting targets, just no fantasy points for Tennessee.
Speaker 2 (01:06:54):
All right, let's get to the bad news if you're
if you're trying to avoid a Bengals like record in
your fantasy football season, here are the injury updates that
you have to keep an eye on in your league.
Speaker 5 (01:07:07):
Yes, well, the buzz kill of the week Stefan Diggs.
He's lost for the season ACL injury there, He's gonna
be thirty. He was playing on a one year proven deal.
He can be cutting season along. His dynasty value certainly
dipping as well. DK Metcalf with a knee issue MCL.
He could try to tough it out this week. We'll
see big matchup there for Seattle. Will track his progress tomorrow.
(01:07:30):
BBC Amuel he's gonna buy this week. Did suffer ridge issue.
We'll keep our eyes on that. Obviously. He've already talked
about T Higgins missing practice for a second straight day.
I doubt he plays at this point. We'll see versus
Las Vegas in fantasy. If he does, I probably roll
him out there. Brian Thomas Junior with the Chefs injury,
we'll see about his status for the Jags more of
(01:07:51):
a short term issue, but they did lose Christian Kirk
for the season with the collarbone the Jags man. This
is a really disappointing fantasy offense and another disappointing season
there for Trevor Lawrence as well. Deontay Johnson. Of course,
he was traded to the Ravens Chad. He was dealing
with the ribs issue obviously, like Devonte Adams. He's suddenly
healed up now that he's on a new team, but
(01:08:13):
I'm not so sure going there. I like to move
for the Ravens, to be clear, but in fantasy, the targets,
he's not going to get the steady volume of targets
even in the Corps offense at Carolina, so it's not
a big mover for me. Jordan Love, with a growing issue,
says he's got a chance to play.
Speaker 2 (01:08:30):
He's definitely a tough dude.
Speaker 5 (01:08:31):
We'll have to wait and see on that.
Speaker 2 (01:08:33):
Malik Wilson is in there.
Speaker 5 (01:08:34):
I'm fading those Packers wide outs. Derek Carr's coming back
in all likelyhood from his oblique injury. That's good thing
and a great matchup versus the Panthers. Tyrone Tracy trending
in a positive direction after his concussion on Monday night
versus Steelers for crossing our fingers for TJ Hockinson with
return from a knee issue. I'll let him play his
way back into my fantasy line up in Dallas. Goddard
(01:08:56):
his practice today already too straight practices. He's on a
very good trend to miss his third straight game there
for the Eagles.
Speaker 2 (01:09:03):
And Finally, the Halloween edition studs, duds and sleepers.
Speaker 5 (01:09:09):
Yes, yes, tricks and treats for sure. Let's start with
the treats. We'll start with the studs. Alvin Kamara. I
mentioned that juicy match up there with Carolina. I mentioned
the return of Derek Carr. We all remember the fifty
burger these Saints put up on this team in week one.
I like Kamara to be the top running back this week.
I'll let me some Kate Oughten too.
Speaker 2 (01:09:29):
He was my sleeper last week here with mo.
Speaker 5 (01:09:32):
He's on the stud list this week. Twenty nine point
PPR points in eighteen the week before that. I mean,
this guy is on fire. Without godwinning Evan, somebody's gonna.
Speaker 8 (01:09:42):
Have to do it.
Speaker 5 (01:09:43):
On the dud side, I'm gonna sit DeAndre Hopkins. He
didn't really get involved too much. I don't know, we
haven't seen a big game from him in some time,
but just fourteen rounds, I do expect a little bit
of an uptick. And I'm definitely sitting Jordan Addison too.
One game with at least twenty percent targets all season,
and he's only hit double digit pp R points one
time all year as well. He should be on your bench.
(01:10:04):
And this week's sleepers. I like Kirk Cousins first Dallas.
He's good for I'm going close to three hundred yards,
multiple touchdowns her, He's in my top ten. And for
he Moster Miami at Buffalo, Tua came back. Everybody's got
some value. Miami Moster with some trips to the end
zone last week. I like him this week too versus
Buffalo as a solid flex play.
Speaker 2 (01:10:25):
Moe told me to let you plug the DAV five K,
So I'm going to do that right now.
Speaker 5 (01:10:31):
I appreciate that. Yeah, DAV obviously disabled American veterans. It's
an organization I've been with for about a decade, Shaid.
We help a million veterans a year. Our national headquarters
right here in Erlanger, Kentucky, and we're excited another year
the DAV five K. It's our thirteenth year we've done
it here. It's at the Holy Gril or excoose me
down at the banks.
Speaker 2 (01:10:50):
We'll be partying at the Holy Grail and everywhere else
after that.
Speaker 5 (01:10:53):
But we're looking for folks to participate. It's a walk,
it's a role, it's around, it's a ride, it's all
the honor America's veterans. And if you want to donate,
you can't really participate. We'll take those two. You can
obviously register, get a team in the race, even volunteer.
We need a lot of those to help our veterans
as well. And davfive k dot org is the place
(01:11:13):
you can do find all of that information.
Speaker 2 (01:11:15):
All right, Dano, appreciate it.
Speaker 12 (01:11:17):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:11:17):
It was good scene you last week. Great talking to
you today, and I'm back here next Thursday, so I'll
talk to you next week.
Speaker 5 (01:11:24):
There you go, already looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (01:11:26):
Ched, Thanks for having me, and enjoy all the games.
All right, there you go, Dan Klaskins, get sports info
dot com all your fantasy football needs. That's it for
our number two. Just take a break. Our number three
coming up next. This is Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. This
is your Thursday sport.
Speaker 1 (01:11:44):
No one covers the Bengals like ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's
sports station.
Speaker 2 (01:12:01):
All right, here we go our number three, final hour
of the day, Chad Brendall. And for Moeggar, you're on
the Moeggar Show and you threw it gloomy Halloween. We
(01:12:26):
can go a bunch of ways with this hour, the
phone lines are open. We we no longer have guests
scheduled for the rest of the day. We went guest
heavy the first two hours thanks to Lee Sterling, Mike
de Corsi, Jay Morris, and Dan Klaskins. But but now
it's time to you know, hang out, talk some sports talk,
maybe Halloween. Do you want to you want to talk
(01:12:46):
about your favorite Halloween candy? Phone lines are open five one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty that you.
Speaker 3 (01:12:53):
Won't be able to give out because you're here from mo.
Speaker 2 (01:12:56):
Yeah, I mean, do you do you think the kids
are going to be out at seven seven fifteen?
Speaker 3 (01:13:02):
Probably not?
Speaker 2 (01:13:03):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:13:04):
I mean, but even't know what the weather is like,
it's raining right now.
Speaker 2 (01:13:07):
It's raining, and it's supposed to rain pretty much all
the way through like eight, and then it's supposed to
kind of clear up after eight.
Speaker 3 (01:13:14):
What do I mean to do kids get to do
over tomorrow?
Speaker 2 (01:13:19):
Probably not. I mean, you know, people plan on, you know,
especially if you don't want Moeger to yell at you,
people plan on being home on Halloween to hand out
candy like I love I'm not gonna lie. One of
my favorite things is, you know, getting the fire pit,
going in the driveway and handing out candy, seeing all
the costumes, seeing the cute kids that come up. I
(01:13:44):
saw one yesterday Tarin that these people there, they had
like a young looked like an Australian shepherd type dog,
and they taught the dog throughout the course of the
night how to take candy and put it in the
kids' bags. It was adorable. It's cool. It was adorable.
I'd like I typically enjoy that, but can't do a
(01:14:07):
fire It's raining, It's gonna be chilly. What are the odds?
The only it hasn't rained outside of the hurricane remnants
that rolled through. It hasn't rained since like June in
this town, right, and then the one night that you
wanted to be nice out for trick or treating, it
rains standard. It's ridiculous Cincinnati. But yeah, if you want
(01:14:35):
to talk Halloween candy, I'm here. I'm here to talk
to you. Bengals Raiders. The Raiders on a four game
losing streak, Terran but but don't let that fool you.
They have beaten the Ravens, they've beaten the Browns. They
only have two wins on the season. But this is
a team that fights, a team that plays hard for
(01:14:57):
their head coach Antonio Pears. Close loss to the Rams
two weeks ago, close loss to the Chiefs last week
twenty seven to twenty. The Rams game was twenty to fifteen.
They are offensively challenged. We saw Desmond Ritterer for like
what like thirty seconds last week. Yep, he came in.
(01:15:18):
There was a false start and then he came out.
It's his second week in Vegas, so you know, maybe
he'll get things back on, you know, kind of get
on track, not back on track, but on track for
the first time in his time with Vegas, and maybe
we'll see him get a chance. But this is a
(01:15:42):
team that, you know, are they good No, Are the
Bengals good enough to just assume that they're gonna beat
the Raiders. I don't think so. I mean it does.
We have seen the defense when they have played against
bad offenses, This defense has been fine. When they've played
(01:16:04):
against teams with competent quarterback play with a competent offense,
they have been obliterated. So this should play in their favor.
But I'm not ready, like I almost especially the Bengals
(01:16:24):
are not good with big betting lines. There's seven point
favorite here. It feels like anytime they get up in
that range they lay a complete egg. Maybe that's just
prisoner of the moment type stuff, but remember the talk
going into the season. All you look at this like
the Bengals are going to be heavily favored in a
bunch of their early games. They're three and five. They're
(01:16:50):
three and five, so I don't think you can take
the Raiders for granted. They've got probably they're probably not
going to have their left and on the other side,
you're gonna you're gonna have a rookie, so probably Cody
Ford and Amarius Mems trying to stop depending where he
(01:17:12):
line lines up. Max Crosby, I don't feel great about that.
We have seen teams with a good pass rush give
this offense fits. We have also seen this team not
be able to run the ball, and that's the biggest
(01:17:35):
concerning thing for me, Terrent. It feels like the run
game is just lip service, like they do not care
one iota about actually rushing the football. Don't care. It
is not something that they they value at all. You know,
if it happens, it happens. But if not, they they're
(01:17:57):
not all that concerned with it because they they you know,
they they it's Joe Burrow's team. We're gonna give Joe
the ball. But the other thing I think you have
to concern yourself with Taran It doesn't look like T
Higgins is gonna play and they are one in seven
without t Higgins one in seven? Is this gonna be
(01:18:22):
the two? I don't feel comfortable with that. I just
they they're not doing anything to inspire confidence in in
week to week thinking that this team is is where
(01:18:45):
it needs to be, where it wants to be. Like,
if you had to put amount of money that that
mean you know, that means something to you? Would you
bet on this Bengals team?
Speaker 13 (01:19:01):
Tarn to do what I bet it on this past
weekend and lost right, got blown out, got embarrassed in
the second half of that game.
Speaker 2 (01:19:14):
Yeah, I left in the third quarter. It's like, nope,
so you bought tickets, went and left in the third quarter. Yep.
Speaker 5 (01:19:19):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:19:21):
I mean this couldn't have been cheap, not on a
producer salary. They let you pay for it in Halloween candy.
I found a way around it. Okay, I'm glad. I'm
happy for you. I'm not happy for you that they
they essentially wasted your money and you left in the
third quarter. Why would you You're You're a Vikings fan,
(01:19:45):
You're not a Bengals guy. I'm confused.
Speaker 6 (01:19:48):
I was just down there till again. It's like, you know,
why not? Okay, see if I can get in there.
Found some tickets at the right price. Yeah, I know
you're I can feel you.
Speaker 3 (01:19:56):
I guess we played, don't We played last Thursday, so
it was late.
Speaker 2 (01:19:58):
Yeah, you had a Sunday all you didn't?
Speaker 5 (01:20:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:20:01):
No, I just there's nothing that inspires confidence about where
this franchise is at right now. Are they capable of
putting together a run and even if they don't make
the playoffs, like making it interesting? Yeah, they're they're capable
of that just because they have Joe, because they have Jamar.
(01:20:26):
But but what positions instill confidence in you in this
Bengals team? Quarterback, one wide receiver Trey Hendrickson. I guess
the offensive line. The offensive line has is having, at
least in protecting Joe, a pretty good season. They're not
(01:20:47):
having a good season in the run game, or at
least the run game is not producing. Whether you blame
that on the line or the fact that you know,
the the Bengals went and they're big splashes on offense.
Were were Zach Moss and Mike Kiseki, Trent Brown that
(01:21:11):
you know lasted a couple of weeks bridge the gap
to a Marius Mems. I guess they're just they're frustrating.
They're very frustrating. All right, I'm excited. We're going to
take a break. We're gonna talk to our guy, Mike
from LA. We're going to celebrate a Dodgers World Series victory.
(01:21:33):
He was the first thing I thought of when the
third out was recorded and the Dodgers were celebrating. So
let's take a break. When we come back, we'll talk
to Mike and we'll celebrate a Dodgers World Series more
after this. Since Naty's ESPN fifteen thirty, This.
Speaker 1 (01:21:52):
Is Football in the Nettie, run to you in part
by Blood Light and by Skyline Shilly on the official
home of the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:22:10):
Rolling right along.
Speaker 2 (01:22:11):
You know, you know what the Dodgers said to you
know what La said to New York last night Tarn.
Speaker 3 (01:22:17):
Oh, of course I know.
Speaker 2 (01:22:18):
They not like us. They not like us. The good
times in La keep rolling along, and that means it's
the perfect time to hear from our friend Mike in La. Mike,
how was jail last night? Did you get arrested? What happened?
When did you get out? You know, give us all
the details.
Speaker 10 (01:22:37):
Said quiet down, mister Watts, I said, girl friends, you
don't understand what just happened.
Speaker 9 (01:22:44):
Oh, we'll gonna shut up anyway.
Speaker 10 (01:22:50):
Let's start off with let's start off with the with
the first omen Well, first of all, Dodgers have a
better baseball team, there's no question about that.
Speaker 8 (01:23:02):
Number two.
Speaker 10 (01:23:04):
When ice Cube came out and did that intro, that
thing was seamless. It was too truly professional and excellent
in every way.
Speaker 2 (01:23:15):
Friend of the show, right, Tarn ice Cube?
Speaker 10 (01:23:18):
Yep, bat Boy comes out in its bush League overmodulated
background singers the occasionally.
Speaker 4 (01:23:27):
I love me.
Speaker 8 (01:23:28):
It sucked.
Speaker 10 (01:23:29):
He was bush Man and so that started to think.
And then Freddy took over and we used nineteen pictures
starting pictures during the regular season. Didn't have our three
best starters in the World Series. But the Dodgers, the
differences they're fundamentally more sound than the Yankee but and
(01:23:50):
they're more versatile than the Yankees. But they are so
disciplined at the plate. They don't swing a lot of
bad pictures, they take a lot. They're just a better
Anybody that says they're not doesn't know baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:24:05):
I mean they they you know. Obviously, Freddie Freeman was
the difference in the series. He set the tone with
the Grand Slam, then he followed it up with home
runs in the next three games. And you couldn't be
happier for a more like you want the consummate professional athlete,
Freddie Freeman, Like he doesn't seem like he's got a
(01:24:26):
bad bone in his body, just seems like an incredible
human and he's.
Speaker 10 (01:24:31):
Got a very ill child off for everything else. So
it was just it was electric out here.
Speaker 5 (01:24:38):
Chan.
Speaker 10 (01:24:38):
I thought of you too, Bud last night. I thought
of you and Mo Antonio, but I thought of you
first because you at least acknowledge that La is a
pretty cool place in southern California in general.
Speaker 9 (01:24:49):
So I thought of you last night.
Speaker 10 (01:24:52):
I got bad news on how this stuff. We'll talk
about that some other time, but anyway, yeah, I thought
it was and now I can get into football because
baseball is over. But man, that I mean being the parade.
There one thing I wanted to bring up to you
get bugs me. Did the Astros did they or did
(01:25:14):
they not steal that World Series from the Lakers with
with their with their calls? You know what I'm saying,
you don't talking about.
Speaker 2 (01:25:22):
Yeah, yeah they did years ago. They did. But you know,
the past is the past, Mike, We're living in the
We want to live in the present and in the present.
You got a ring like that? We should get Mike
and l a a ring. That's what should happen out
of this this situation.
Speaker 10 (01:25:38):
I cry. I mean I appeared in last night. I
was really happy because they overcame so many damn injuries
this year, and and they spend some money. If people
all they buy their title. No, not necessarily, or Tony
didn't do nothing in the whole series. Niki contributed some
on fundamental stuff, and and my boy, my super Puerto
(01:26:03):
Rican friend mister t k Hernandez contributed a lot. Just
it was just a great team effort. I couldn't have
been more happy. I'm sure nobody in Cincinnati really gives
a rip about it. But I'm glad you acknowledged my
heartfelt glee and all this chat. So thanks, buddy. How
are you and how's the family doing.
Speaker 2 (01:26:22):
We're doing good. The daughter is. She's down at the
regional tournament with her volleyball team. They get started hearing
about an hour and a half, playing for a regional
championship tonight. So, you know, no Halloween and the Brendel
household tonight, no candy for Dad to steal for the
first time in fourteen years.
Speaker 8 (01:26:39):
But you know, I love it.
Speaker 7 (01:26:41):
I love it.
Speaker 10 (01:26:42):
So things are going good in general.
Speaker 2 (01:26:44):
Things are going good in general, Mike, and hopefully hopefully
we get some better news.
Speaker 10 (01:26:50):
Yeah, I hope.
Speaker 2 (01:26:51):
So for the time being, you're a world champion.
Speaker 10 (01:26:56):
Yeah, and I feel you know, I can't tell you
how good it feels because it's been a while. Why
did another quick question, and I'll let you go.
Speaker 8 (01:27:04):
I know you gotta go.
Speaker 10 (01:27:06):
Why did they diminish the championships in the COVID season?
I mean, they still won the world so I don't
understand the rationale behind that.
Speaker 2 (01:27:14):
It's just because of the shortened season, Like people cling
to anything that they can, you know, dump on that
they can you know, pooh pooh and and claim as unworthy. Uh,
it's it's the hater mentality that is so prevalent out
there today. But look, they had playoffs. A team won
the playoffs, that was the Dodgers. You think the Dodgers
(01:27:38):
weren't going to get there if they went one sixty
two instead of sixty come on?
Speaker 4 (01:27:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (01:27:45):
And I thought San Diego had their number, I really
did so when they beat the Padres, I thought, oh,
you better watch out now whoever comes out of the
American League and a little quick chin, I'll hang, I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (01:27:57):
I mean, I was just gonna say, like, it looked like,
for a minute it was gonna get interesting if it
went back to La the pressures on the Dodgers, like
you know, it could have gotten interesting. And instead the
Yankees have a bad News Bears fifth inning and leave
the door open. And you deserve to lose when you.
Speaker 9 (01:28:15):
Do that, you do.
Speaker 10 (01:28:18):
And I'll tell you that a lot of people out
here were so confident that they couldn't beat the Yankees,
couldn't beat them for in a row, including me. That's
pretty big task four in them. But a lot of
people wanted them to win it at home. I had
mixed emotions. I'll have to tell you because I would
have had a ticket through the disabled veterans guys, which
would have been I don't know if they could have
(01:28:39):
made it, but it would have been cool. And then
I'll hang up. But I'm so befuddled by the Bengals.
Are they just are they ever going to get out
of this whatever they're in. I mean, I don't understand
sched Can you, I don't know, give me a recapitulation
or something. I don't understand how they get out of
(01:29:00):
where they're at.
Speaker 2 (01:29:02):
Here's the problem, Here's the biggest problem for the Bengals, Mike.
They do not invest enough time and energy and money
into their scouting department, and as a result, they are
incapable of drafting at the back end of the draft.
They can draft when they've drafted at the front end
(01:29:24):
of the draft. Burrow Chase Higgins, like you look, when
they are bad. They have done a good job recently
capitalizing on being bad and turning those draft picks into success.
When they've had success and gotten moved to the back
of the draft, it has been a kind of a disaster.
(01:29:46):
And you know, there's there's a million reasons. I think
that that you can point to as why, and we've
talked a lot about them here, but that at the
end of the day, it doesn't matter. The reason the
Chiefs are good and can ttinue to be good is
because they win and then they still are able to
enhance their team through the draft. They are still abled
(01:30:11):
able to get better and play and win at a
high level while not being afforded with elite, you know,
talent at the front of the draft. I think that
there has to be a development piece of that where
they are just simply they have better coaching, they have
a better defensive staff, they have a better offensive staff,
(01:30:33):
and and they do a better job of turning those late, late,
late in the round draft picks into starters into guys
that produce at a high level. And you know, they
they looked at that when that Mahomes contract was going
to come up, and they said, okay, we have to
be ready, and they were. The Bengals are looking at
(01:30:56):
that right now. They knew that this time was coming.
They went young. They tried to do the necessary thing.
None of those guys are doing what they needed. Miles
Murphy and Cam Taylor, Britton Jordan Battle. You know, you
keep going down the list a bunch of guys on
the defensive line. The Bengals have not been able to,
(01:31:19):
you know, replenish their roster in a way that's conducive
to winning and playing at a high level. And as
a result, every time they play an offense with a pulse,
their defense gets pulverized.
Speaker 14 (01:31:35):
And people, you know, and I I'm tired about here
because I you know, I tell these guys I'm a
Bengals fan, and then they just you know, vilify me,
and I just don't have an answer.
Speaker 10 (01:31:46):
It's embarrassing.
Speaker 5 (01:31:47):
I look like, you know, I look like some pool
because I don't.
Speaker 10 (01:31:50):
Have an answer. But now you help me have an answer.
Speaker 8 (01:31:53):
I appreciate that.
Speaker 10 (01:31:54):
And you mentioned the scouting and player development. You'll notice
one thing last night when freeing up there a couple
of the guys. They all mentioned front office, player development
and scouting. And there's a lot to it, Like you're saying,
there's a lot to it, but it's behind the scenes,
so nobody notices, right Chad.
Speaker 2 (01:32:13):
That's the thing, Like you know, we talk about it
a lot, We try to talk about it a lot,
but everybody wants to talk about the shiny, flashy stuff
that's right in front of them. The Bengals have refused
to fully move themselves into the modern times, and you
know we're about to see that on Tuesday when they
don't make a trade, or if they've made two in
(01:32:33):
season trades in fifty two years, that's almost impossible to
believe for a franchise that is serious. Two in season
trades in fifty two years.
Speaker 10 (01:32:44):
Well, Chad, I got to tell you to hear your
voice made my day. Karen. You're always my buddy and
I'm look forward to talking to you again.
Speaker 9 (01:32:50):
Chad.
Speaker 10 (01:32:50):
God bless you, man, bless.
Speaker 2 (01:32:52):
You my congratulations on your win. And I am back
Wednesday and Thursday, so we'll talk to you next week. Okay, yes, sir,
thank you to thank you, Mike. Okay, Mike, you go,
Mike in La celebrating a World Series championship. Fun lines
are open. Uh, Well, we'll touch on the World Series
a little bit in the next segment. More after this
(01:33:12):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:33:14):
You've been listening to a football in Thenetti on the
official home of the Bengals, Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:33:31):
There it is headlight. I can't sleep.
Speaker 8 (01:33:33):
I tossed the term candle sticks in the dog business.
Speaker 2 (01:33:36):
The bodies being firmed, four balls closing in, getting bigger.
I'm paranoise. Sleeping with my finger on the tree. Was
always stressing how you're living. One of my favorites of
all time.
Speaker 5 (01:33:47):
A fight.
Speaker 2 (01:33:48):
See every time I closed, I know.
Speaker 3 (01:33:50):
They actually got another one.
Speaker 2 (01:33:50):
I I just thought of.
Speaker 3 (01:33:53):
It's not really popular, but they got a song called Chucky.
Speaker 2 (01:33:55):
On the Oh, yeah, I remember that. I remember that.
Look good to find a clean version of there. No,
it's probably not a clean version of that one. That
was a deep cut. So yeah, no, yeah, I can't
even like, I don't even know what the uh the
(01:34:16):
fill in words for this one are, so I can't
Such a good one, Such a good one. Rest in peace,
Bushwick Bill rolling down the stretch here and uh a
(01:34:38):
world series over. The Dodgers are champions, you know, tarn.
It's interesting because the initial thought is like, what are
the heck what are the Reds need to do to
get there? And and Mike, you know, he made a
great point, like the Dodgers were without their their three
(01:35:00):
best starting pitchers. Shoheo Tani did not produce in the
World Series. Mookie Betts didn't, I mean, he didn't do
anything special in the World Series. If Freddie Freeman, they
had a guy former MVP, Like, look, Freddie Freeman's awesome,
but you know, and he got hot. But essentially like
(01:35:22):
they had one guy get hot. They had a team
that played pretty good fundamental baseball. They didn't do anything
crazy like drop an easy fly ball to center that
sparked a five run fifth INNU did you were you
listening earlier to Talkbacks. Uh, somebody called in and played
center field and dedicated it to Aaron Judge. It was
(01:35:44):
so good.
Speaker 3 (01:35:46):
Put me in coach.
Speaker 2 (01:35:50):
But and then in terms of like the Dodgers, yeah,
they had a giant payroll, but they didn't necessarily win
it on the backs. Now, they probably you know, went
a long way in getting there on the backs of
all those guys. Right, Otani had one of the most
incredible seasons in the history of Major League Baseball. Like,
(01:36:13):
let's not it's not fool ourselves there, but in the
World Series, Like, once they got there, there's a lot
of guys that had come up through their minor league system.
There's a lot of guys that were that were homegrown
or that you know, yeah, they might have you know,
got them in free agency, but it wasn't They weren't
(01:36:35):
part of the billion dollars really that the Dodgers spent
in free agency last year. I don't know that. Maybe,
and maybe it's Terry Francona clouding my brain, that very
well could be. But with a competent manager and the
type of young talent they have, if they handle this
(01:36:58):
offseason correctly, I don't think they're miles away because you
know what, you like, two years ago, you know what
big like, we all looked at it and we said,
man like, even if they got it right, their bullpen
is such a disaster that it will always fail them,
like when the chips are down because there weren't enough
(01:37:20):
good arms down there. Their bullpen. The last two years,
while it's maybe not been you know, dominant, it has
been really good. I think the next step in the
pitching department is to see these young starters get to
a point where they can pitch one hundred and eighty
one hundred and ninety two hundred innings like the days
(01:37:42):
of two hundred and thirty, two hundred and forty innings
like that. Those are gone, so you don't have to
stretch them out that far. But these guys are good,
like we have seen more than enough of it to
know when healthy, when on the mound like that they are.
They have what they need in terms of starting pitching.
(01:38:04):
They have an ace I think, or at least very
close to it in Hunter Green before he you know whatever,
that's silly injury was that kind of thwarted his final
couple weeks. He was pitching like one of the best
pitchers in baseball consistently. They have a star there. They
(01:38:28):
have a star in Elie de la Cruz who got
I think significantly better in his second full season or
in his second season, yep, significantly better. Does he still
have more to improve on? Yeah, absolutely, but you have
a potential star if you can get Matt McClain back,
big if I know, But if you can get Matt
(01:38:48):
McClain back, and some of these guys that had a
bad second season take to you know what Tito Franco
and his staff Chris Valaika as a hitting coach, like
to what they're they're preaching. The talent level is there
(01:39:12):
if you can go out and find a corner outfield bat.
If you can properly navigate first and third, you know
what's what's the plan specifically at first and third to
get some more pop in this lineup, to be in
a situation where you don't have so many nights that
(01:39:33):
you score two or fewer runs throughout the course of
one hundred and sixty two games. I know it says
Dodgers and Yankees on their jersey. I did not feel
like the talent was so overwhelming in terms of their
performance in that World Series that they're unbeatable. I didn't watch.
(01:39:55):
Did you watch either of those teams and think like
the ninety three Bulls or whatever? Tarn No, I didn't either.
I think they had great managers. Yankees fans will disagree
with me. I think they like, you know, high end
managers that know how to handle a game. And I
(01:40:18):
think they had good pitching, and they had guys who
can put the ball in play and put pressure on
a defense. I don't think the Reds are that far
from that if they handle this off season properly. Final Break,
(01:40:38):
David's got an off topic question when we come back.
I'm excited about that, David, I'm excited about that. To
end the show in this manner. More after this the
Malegger Show right here on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 4 (01:41:02):
Have you.
Speaker 7 (01:41:04):
All right?
Speaker 2 (01:41:04):
Here we go the final segment of the day. Let's
go out to David. David's got an off topic question
to close us out. David better be good. Let's go.
Speaker 9 (01:41:18):
Well, yeah, I got a couple of things.
Speaker 5 (01:41:20):
Well, I love the Ghetto Boys, me too beautiful, love
to Lab crew, which is we can play that on
the radio too much?
Speaker 4 (01:41:30):
Now.
Speaker 8 (01:41:33):
Well, no, I was.
Speaker 5 (01:41:34):
Asking, you know, like Mike Greenberg, like what does he
do because he's never on a show, you know, I
find it's funny.
Speaker 2 (01:41:44):
I mean, he's got it, clearly, he's got a great agent. Right,
there's a lot of vacation Todd in that in that contract.
Speaker 9 (01:41:54):
Apparently.
Speaker 5 (01:41:56):
But but then my other thing is is what happened
to the Cincinnati Bengals defense.
Speaker 2 (01:42:03):
You know, I just don't think they've replenished it at
a high enough level. I they they they aren't as
good in the middle. DJ Reader is gone. Before the
knee injury to willby A. Douzia was was excellent on
the outside and you know, really able to execute what
they wanted to do, uh, from their their boundary corner
(01:42:25):
in the scheme, and then you were they had the
best safety in football, and Jesse Bates and and Baits
I think really was was the lynchpin of all of it.
And when you took him out of the mix and
you replaced him with guys that were average and and
maybe a little bit below average, you know, the defense
(01:42:49):
is kind of falling apart. I think they're think they're
okay at linebacker, Like I don't think either of those
guys are are exceptional. I think they're just they're they're solid,
they're okay. They've got one pass rusher that they've got,
you know, a revolving door at defensive tackle. Their corners
are hit or miss, like there's just it goes back,
(01:43:12):
David for me to something that Paul Deaner Danner Junior
said this about five six years ago. Is right at
the beginning of the Joe Burrow era. How many positions
do the Bengals have a top ten player at their
position on defense? They've got Trey Hendrickson and that's it.
It's not even close. There's nobody even close to being
top ten in the NFL at their position on that
(01:43:33):
defense except for Trey and that's that's a disaster, right right.
So until they get that fixed, they've got a draft
and develop. That's you know, Joe's Joe's contract is a
