Blue floor.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
He doesn't play enough to stink. In order to stink,
I actually have to play. I played one basketball game.
That's great. Way to brace the bless us with your presence.
Joel go Too of thirteen lose and I'd say stink.
Guy never plays. It's like it's like saying I'm bad
at ice skating. I never ice skate. How do you
know Rick Boring does not stink? He's got a thousand

(00:24):
jobs MKU radio analyst, host of The Darren Horn Show,
host of The Skinny Podcast, and proprietor of a Musketeer
Report dot comedy. Joins us every Thursday or every Wednesday.
Today is Wednesday, So Rick is here? Hi?

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Rick, what's up? Mom?

Speaker 2 (00:41):
I watched Xavier was sixteen to two. It was fourteen
to two last night. It was fourteen to two last
night for what felt like a half hour, and then
they scored to make it sixteen to two, and I thought,
you know what, I think this game has been salted away,
and so I diverted my attention to more competitive games.
XU blows out Jackson State. They have played well in spurts.
They have unevenly and spurreds through three games. What have

(01:02):
we learned about them.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Well. I think one thing is that we're starting to
see a big three separate for Xavior. I think Zach
Freeman and Ryan Conwell are clearly the leaders of this
team on the offense event, and then Daveon McKnight clearly
seems to be the third wheel there and the other
guy and most involved on the offensive vent Dalen Swain
probably has the most potential to rise into a bigger role.

(01:28):
I also like guys like Dante Maddox and Marcus Foster
transfers who are still trying to figure things out, but
they haven't really gotten it going yet and haven't gotten
on track. So I mean, Dante Maddix did hit four
to threes in the final six minutes of action last
night to finished with sixteen points, but the game was
well out of hand by that point. So I think
one big thing is that we're starting to see the

(01:49):
roles form, and it's clear Zach Fremantle, Ryan Conwell, and
Davion McKnight are the ones running the show for this
year's Xavier team. The other thing I think is that
defense was a big concern, particularly perimeter defense, for the
first two games wins over Texas Southern and IU Indy.
Both of those teams shot a lot of three that

(02:09):
made a lot of threes against Xavior. They did much
better against Jackson State, But part of what I wrote
in last night's recap is that Jackson State is different
personnel wise. They don't have the shooters of those other
two teams. They were more about getting the ball inside
and driving to the basket with athletes. So I think
that still remains to be seen how well this team

(02:30):
is going to defend on the perimeter.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Nothing against the three schools that they have played, but
they do get a name opponent at least in wake
Forest on Saturday at noon. What sort of problems will
the Demon Deacons present?

Speaker 1 (02:43):
You know? I think the one thing that you look
at with wake Forest and they've they've been really good
defensively to start the year. They were ranked thirty second
in terms of their defensive efficiency according to Kenpom. Their
offense hasn't been as impressive. They're just inside the top
one hundred. But look at their wins over Coppin State,
North Carolina, and t and most recently the two point

(03:05):
win over Michigan on Sunday, seventy two to seventy. I
think it really stands out the way they defend and
the way that they rebound as well. So I think
those are two areas where you know Xavier is going
to be challenged. Can they get their offense going against
a legitimate defense? And also, rebounding has been a concern

(03:25):
for this team early on so far, and this wake
Force team has a couple of guys like Treyvon Spillers
that can really rebound. So he's going to challenge Xavier
in the paint.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
You've got a game tomorrow night. Nichols is going to
play NKU tomorrow and they're going to play UC on Friday.
So two games, two checks, back to back games, probably
back to back losses. Here's my question for you. Are
you ready?

Speaker 1 (03:51):
I'm ready.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
Nichols most recent game came against something called the Mississippi
University for Women. How's that work?

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Yeah, here's the thing. Jim Kelch and I were talking
about this on air after the Purdue game, and so
then on the ride home, we were like, what is
going on with that school? And so I googled it
and I start reading more about it, and I'll tell
you what, It gets more problematic the more you read.
I really don't know. Like the name of the school
previously is confusing. I don't want to get into it

(04:21):
because I'm too ignorant on the subject, but I'll just
tell you Apparently they started letting men into the school
for women back in the eighties at some point. I
don't know how they recruit there. I don't know what
types of players they have there, but I do know
that Nichols handled them fairly easily.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
I don't care about their basketball team, the Mississippi College
for Women or whatever they are, but they allowed men
to go to this school for women. I would imagine, though,
the ratio, forget the sports part of this, rather favorable.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Yeah, but I think it's also like an agriculture school.
I don't know that you're really going there looking for love.
I'll be honest. The whole rite up was disturbing. Go
to the Wikipedia page. I don't want to get any
farther into it, but yeah, the Mississippi School for Women
is not really my thing, all right.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
They have played two high major opponents in Florida State
and Purdue, same question, different team. What have we learned
about the Norse?

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Well, I think a couple of things from a positive perspective,
is that the defense appears to be ahead of schedule.
We know, with that unique style that they have on
the defensive end, a lot of times it takes them
a little bit of the season to build up their
chemistry until they start looking cohesive on that end of
the floor. But they've really hit the ground running defensively
here in the first few games, so I think that's

(05:39):
a good sign. Also, something that's never really been a
strength of this team, partly because of that defensive strategy
that's sort of a mixture of a zone and a
man demand sort of a lot of people call it
a matchup zone, is that they rarely rebound very well
on the defensive end, and so far to the first
two games against really big, physical athletic teams or at

(05:59):
least in Florida State's Cape athletics and produce case, very
big and physical, they rebounded the ball very well. In fact,
they out rebounded Perdue. They had more offensive rebounds and
second chance points than Purdue did in that game. Purdue
was second in the nation and rebounding last year, first
in the nation and rebounding the year before that, So
I take that as a very good sign for this

(06:20):
NKU team and Holbo matchup against Horizon League teams. I
think the big question right now for NKU is who
is going to be their go to score. They lost
the schools all time leading scorer and Mark Wes Warwick
after he transferred to Missouri, so who's going to step
up there? And then also I think you're just wondering,
you know, in terms of point guard play, Dan Grezker

(06:42):
came up from the Division two level. He turned the
ball over four times, didn't play a lot of minutes
in the first game at Florida State. He looked better
against Purdue, but still really struggled from the field. Only
made one of I think eleven field goal attempts in
that game. So they need to get him going or
otherwise they're going to be a little bit thinner in
the back court than they planned on being.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Gotta be honest with you. Looking at the Mississippi University
for Women Wikipedia page and there's a lot going on here.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Yeah, it's concerning, right. I mean, I didn't want to
say the words on air, but they're like the name
of that school previously and stuff. I don't really know
what it all means, but it doesn't sound great.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Yeah, yeah, I'm I'm glad they're not on NKU schedule
or UC schedule or Xavier schedule or anybody in the area.
But we'll be listening tomorrow night. Rick, thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Thanks MO appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
