Speaker 1 (00:00):
The school is in session when the Bengals look to
take New England to task. Who new history class could
get this violent? Speaking of the patriots, I wonder how
I would look in a powder dweke. Probably not good.
Coverage begins at nine am Sunday, stream for free on
the new and improved iHeart Radio app or ESPN fifteen thirty,

(00:24):
the official home of the Cincinnati Bare You go, can't wait?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Five after three? This is ESPN fifteen thirty Mullager. Thank
you for listening. Hope you're having like the most awesome
Wednesday ever. Today is my Friday. I'm not here tomorrow,
So if it sounds like there's a little extra punch,
that's why I I don't know. I don't know what
that means. Show preview is up on Twitter at Mullager.

(00:52):
People still on Twitter, right. I don't have to like
fully go over to Threads or Blue Sky or something
like that yet at mull Eger. Show previews come your
way thanks to shareff Facts Credit Union. You know what
you should do is you should do what I've done,
become a member of shareffac's credit union. You could do
that right now, literally right now, while we speak, or

(01:14):
while I speak and you listen at shareffact dot org.
Go go, I say, go, do that. We we're jent.
We have a lot of stuff today between now and
six o'clock. Don't forget. Bengals game Plan is on at
six featuring starring Dan Horde and Dave Lapham. We got
some college basketball stuff. A little bit later on, I

(01:36):
gotta we gotta spend some time on Mark Pope, who's
looked and sounded like last night like he was having
like an existential crisis. Xavier wins Rick Brooring's gonna talk
about the Musketeers and the Norse coming up at three
forty five Wes Miller. A little bit later on in
the show, John Cunningham's gonna talk about big noon kickoff
coming to UC's campus in the four o'clock hour. As
I said, we are loaded today, we are loaded to

(02:00):
I am not loaded, at least not yet. We got
to spend some time on what's happening at quarterback with
the Bengals right now, because I think it's completely fair
to ask if Joe Burrow is going to play in
games this year, and Joe Burrow is practicing, and Joe
Flacco today is not not because he's old, but because
he's dealing with pain, he's got a sprained ac joint.

(02:22):
Shouldn't they just have Joe Burrow play on Sunday against
the Patriots. I think it's a legitimate question. Maybe we'll
ask it to Richard Skinner in the five o'clock hour.
It's been interesting since Sunday a lot of people have
looked at how the Bengals played against the Steelers, and
they've talked about players quitting and not caring. We have

(02:45):
Paul Danner Junior on the show every Tuesday. He covers
the team. He's in the locker room. He's as well
sourced as anybody. He's also not very hot taky, and
he talked about the lack of want to that the
lack of care among members of the Bengals defense on
Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That game took place against

(03:07):
the backdrop of a lot of folks wondering should the
Bengals move on from Zach Taylor, Should the Bengals move
on from Duke Tobin, Should the Bengals move on from everybody?
Should they start over? Should they clean house? Now? The
one thing that I think you've always been able to
say about Zach Taylor. Positive thing you could say about

(03:28):
Zach Taylor is his teams, for the most part, have
always played for him. Like the first two years were miserable. Man,
that first season was dreadful. They won two games, and
still I thought during that year it didn't feel like
he lost the collective. Maybe he lost individuals. Carlos Dunlap

(03:49):
didn't want to be a part of it. But you
didn't watch that team that season and thought Dave Quick
twenty twenty, the COVID year, Burrows rookie year. That team
won football game games late in the season with Ryan
Finley and Brandon Allen playing quarterback. And so as much
as we focus on play calling and the structure of

(04:10):
the offense and who's doing what on the coaching staff,
the one thing I think you've always been able to
say about Zach Taylor is his teams have played for him.
They haven't quit, nobody's efforts been compromised until now. This

(04:31):
this is what it feels like, and this is what
it looks like. I think, and you can tell me
if you disagree, but I think this is what it
sounds like, and this is what it looks like when
a coach is starting to lose his team that game
against the Steelers, I don't care what you want to
say about the Bengals schematics against Pittsburgh. They had guys

(04:55):
on defense, plural guys who looked like and acted like
they did not want to play football. And look, man,
the Steelers have like a three hundred and eighty pound
tight end I'm exaggerating here in Darnell Washington, who looks like,
you know, just an overgrown sixth grader playing against you know,
guys and classmates who are just woefully undersized. That's what

(05:20):
it looked like to You're a professional football player. You
got to figure out a way to get the guy
on the ground. Dudes who, as we say these days,
were making business decisions, but players who look like they
didn't want to be out there. This is the antithesis
of what we've come to know about Zach Taylor's teams
over his first six seasons. Like you had guys, and

(05:40):
you can make this more about the individual players T
Higgins two years ago. To me, this is one of
the reasons why t Higgins has a beloved Cincinnati Bengal.
That guy on New Year's Eve two years ago against
the Kansas City Chiefs, had a messed up hamstring, and
he was still, even without his coaches knowing, was willing
himself onto the field the game against the Miami Dolphins

(06:04):
in twenty nineteen that we all wanted them to lose.
They had players who are not going to be a
part of the rebuild, who the Bengals were looking to replace,
who were doing everything they could to win the football
game that day and spoil our Sunday because we wanted
them to lose so they could take Joe Burrow. Zach's
teams have always played hard. Now, you might, as I

(06:27):
believe you, think that should be just an inherent part
of being a professional athlete. But at the very least
you could always say Zach's teams the efforts not been compromised.
You cannot say that now. And so I'm less interested
in what has happened over the first six years of
Zach's time in Cincinnati, and I'm more interested in what

(06:47):
happens now because, legitimately, for the first time since he
became the head coach of the Bengals, you got folks wondering,
are guys starting to quit? By the way, I keep
saying This is not Week sixteen. There's not mercifully one
game to go and it's all right, get through this

(07:08):
week and then pack your bags and everybody move on.
They have seven games remaining, but just under half of
the season is still in front of this football team.
So Number one, how much worse is this gonna get?
Just in terms of effort. I'm not even talking about
on the scoreboard or in the standings, how many more

(07:30):
games they're gonna lose, just in terms of effort, Because
on Sunday against a quote hated rival, with coming off
of bye, with the rest of the season still in
front of them, with the carrot being dangled of Burrow
coming back a winnable division, if you could just win
this game and maybe win the next one, Joe's gonna
come back and game on. Here we go with all

(07:53):
of that in play, with that game on Sunday not
getting out of hand until the very very end, you
had dudes who look like they quit Geno Stone Unfortunately
for Gino looks like he should be at the top
of that list. There are others. Go and watch the tape.
It doesn't lie. So number one, how much worse is

(08:16):
this gonna get? How much worse is this gonna get
as the games take on less meaning, how much worse
is this gonna get the further they get away from
true Contention Number two, what is that gonna say about
the head coach?

Speaker 3 (08:38):
To me?

Speaker 2 (08:38):
In the NFL, I'm less interested in play calling or
that stuff. It matters, not gonna say it doesn't. As
a head coach, do you keep the locker room together?
Do you keep the team together? Do you have guys
who are bailing early? I don't know what it's like

(08:59):
behind closed. I do think it's completely understandable to assume
that there's gonna be some sort of fracture between an
offense that it's done its best in a defense that
is literally the worst in the history of the sport. Like, Invariably,
there's gonna be fractures. Invariably, there's gonna be finger pointing,
even if guys publicly are saying the right thing. But

(09:20):
more than anything, when we watch this team, do we
see a team that's quit. When you see a team
that's quit, they've quit on their coach. When you see
a team that's quit on its coach, you can't tell
me then about the great culture or you know, no
matter what, these guys have Zach's back, you can't. When
you can't do those things, then it's really time to

(09:41):
talk about who should be next. So by the end
of the season, who knows, man, maybe what happened against
Pittsburgh ends up being enough of an outlier that you go, huh,
Zach at least kept the team together, and the team
in those final few games did not quit. But this
is not trending in the right It's not trending in
the right direction for the Bengals. It's not training in

(10:03):
the right direction for you and I if you care
about the Bengals, and it's it's not trending in the
right direction for a coach who I don't know how
hot his seat is. I know how hot A lot
of people want his seat to be. Well, it gets
only hotter if the effort continues to look like it
did on Sunday, Because what it looked like on Sunday

(10:27):
is a team that has quit. And when an NFL
team has quit, players have quit on themselves, they've quit
on their teammates, but they've also quit on their head coach.
And if you're a head coach and your team has
quit on you, well, then it's really hard to justify
bringing you back, especially when you're a franchise at the
crossroads that the Bengals are going to be at this

(10:49):
coming offseason. Your thoughts are welcome. We do have a
few minutes before our first guest five wint three seven
four nine fifteen thirty and eight six sixty seven two
three seven seven six. I do not know if Mark
Pope's team quit on it or quit on him last
night at Madison Square Garden. I do know what he

(11:11):
looked and sounded like after the game. I'm gonna stick
up for Mark Pope because I know who preceded him,
and I know what it would have sounded like after
last night's game had Kentucky played the way it did
against Michigan State at Madison Square Garden. Rick Brooring on
the Musketeers and the Norse Nku plays on the road tomorrow.

(11:33):
Xavier beat a bad Old Dominion team last night, but
look pretty good doing so. We'll get to that coming

(13:11):
sports grill, We love them. In about ten minutes, we'll
get to a Trey Hendrickson sports hernie and we'll spend
a few minutes on Mark Pope and what happened with
his team last night at Madison Square Garden, which I thought,
frankly was a lot more about Michigan State than it
was Kentucky. But if you watch the game last night,
Chris Budden, the ESPN reporter, talked about players screaming at

(13:34):
each other, which I'm not sure is I don't know
that much of an exception, but that does this stage
in the season, this early in the season, feel and
seem like a broken unit. And there's lots of time
to get that fixed. There's lots of talent around which
they can fix it. But it was sobering if you're

(13:56):
a Kentucky fan to listen to and watch Mark Pope
before the game, during the game, and certainly after the
game last night. There you go five point three seven nine,
fifteen thirty. Uh, let's see, Ian, you're on ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 5 (14:11):
Ian, how are you, dude, I'm good. I'm good.

Speaker 4 (14:15):
I think I've got past my depression from Cincinnati Sports
because you know, if I'm going to live life like that,
that's that's I feel like I'm just a loser if
I'm going.

Speaker 5 (14:26):
To do that.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
You cannot let a sports team dictate your happiness. It
has taken me a long, long long time to get there, Ian,
but you cannot let a sports team dictate how happy
you are on a daily basis.

Speaker 6 (14:40):
Yeah, agreed.

Speaker 4 (14:42):
And so I've come to the conclusion that to try
to be positive. You know, maybe this darkness and this twist,
this tornado of drama and misfortune and everything we talked
about in February that we saw coming from ten miles
away happened exactly as it did. Uh but you know,

(15:04):
maybe this is like a blessing in disguise, hopefully, you know,
because maybe it forces the hand, like similar to all
the fans not showing up for long enough on either
sports team, and all of a sudden they go get
a big bat or you know, a knockout defensive player,
because that's what seems to move the needle for these teams.

(15:27):
And uh so that's just what I'm hoping man that
that there's not a total rebuild, but it's it's just
a force of uh, you know, making moves that are
obvious that they should have done, like the whole disguise.
I'm sure we'll pay Jamar and Key, but we're just

(15:49):
gonna ignore the I mean, it's so ridiculous that we're
all not fools.

Speaker 7 (15:53):
You know.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
Well, there's there's there's sure we're gonna pay Jamar and
t and there's going ahead in paying them before the
market changed. Like, I don't have any issue in paying
either guy. It cost them more than it needed to
because of how long they waited. And then, by Katie
Blackburn's own admission, they were so preoccupied and I'm frankly

(16:15):
not even sure why this was the case, but they're
so preoccupied in getting the Higgins and Chase deals done
that again, by her own admission, they didn't have enough
time and resources to devote to the rest of the team.
You can keep those players, You could pay those players,
but do it in a way that it doesn't cost
you more than it has to. But you mentioned something
that I think is at the root of the frustration

(16:37):
for most of us. The word obvious. It was obvious
watching last year's defense. They needed to do more and
they didn't. And so the real frustrating thing for me
is people who ignored the obvious, like Duke Tobin, are
very likely to be asked to fix what is again
an obvious problem again, and I'm not sure any of

(17:01):
us trust him or them in as the organization to
do that.

Speaker 4 (17:05):
Yeah, the only thing that I can say is that
having Burrow maybe helps put the pressure in the right direction.

Speaker 8 (17:13):
Because how many seasons that this.

Speaker 4 (17:15):
Is literally two now in a row, are we really
going to see that? But then there's the deficit of
the wholeso deep, How the hell are you going to
get you know, eight to ten key players that you need.

Speaker 6 (17:28):
Maybe it's less because.

Speaker 4 (17:31):
Three of them are making the other six look bad,
and maybe they're not that bad.

Speaker 8 (17:36):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (17:38):
They should have kept Jesse Bates, dude, I mean, it's
so ridiculous, Like it goes on and on and on.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
Right, One of their biggest issues is the inability to
replace players that they decide to move on from. You're
going to have good players get away, either they just
can't wait to leave, or you make a decision We're
not going to winest in this position, or maybe we
think this guy's best football is behind him. But this

(18:05):
has been a chronic issue now for a decade. You
say goodbye to Jesse Bates. Okay, your plan to replace
him was Dax Hill. Now Dax Hill plays corner. Okay,
what's your plan that it's safety and it hasn't worked,
and so yeah, it's very easy to say, and I
agree with you. They should have kept Jesse Bates, but
they have to at some point if they're ever going

(18:26):
to enjoy sustained success, whether it's with Joe Burrow at
quarterback or decades down the road, They're gonna have to
get good at replacing good players who leave because the
nature of the business dictates you're not going to keep
all of them. And they have been woeful in that regard.
There have been players that they forever have not been
able to replace. Jesse Bates is at the top of

(18:47):
that list. Andrew Whitworth. I mean, we are just now
wondering if they are set for the long term at
one of the tackle spots. They spent years not being
able to replace Andrew Whitworth. They tried, they tried before
he left. They drafted Cedric Obwayhi. The plan there did
not work. They are gonna have to get good at

(19:07):
some point at replacing good players when they leave. They've
tried to replace Trey Hendrickson, Miles Murphy was supposed to
on some level replace Trey Hendrickson. That hasn't worked, and
so then you're stuck bringing back Trey Hendrickson and this
year for him has turned out to not work so well.
They've got to get good at replacing players who leave.

Speaker 4 (19:29):
Yeah, I'll end with this, man, because I know you're
a busy guy, but I think that they really need
to look at the analytics, these the patterns, swallow some
pride and make some adjustments on the freaking scouting. I
think it is a core the problem along with their stubbornness,

(19:50):
you know what I mean, like grow change everyone should,
including ownership and GM de facto man, you know.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
We might call him that and nice to hear from you,
GM to facto man, evolve like this is we can.
We can talk till we're blue in the face about
how they should not have let Jesse Bates go, nor
your plans to replace players need to work. Like if
if the plan to replace Jesse Bates worked, we wouldn't

(20:19):
be talking about him anymore. Hasn't And if that was
an isolated thing, you'd be able to move past it.
But their m O, this is not the first time
we've talked about this. Their mo O for a while
has been good players leave, we can't figure out how
to replace him, and that is mainly going to start
in the draft. Speaking of Trey Hendrickson, he's got a

(20:41):
sports hernia. We're going to talk about sports hernias with

Wilkes from Orthos Sincy. Let's talk about Trey Hendrickson. So
we're rating sports hernia that is maybe going to require

(23:03):
surgery at the end of this season. They haven't put
them on ir they're I guess holding out hope that
he's going to be able to play. This was originally
a back issue, then we saw a hip and now
sports hernia. Let's start with that. What is a sports hernia?

Speaker 11 (23:19):
Yeah, yeah, great question, Melan, Thanks for having me. So
sports hernias have been something that's been in the news,
kind of rising in kind of acknowledgment over the last
fifteen twenty years. So what it really is is the
group of muscles that represent your abdominal, oblique, and core
muscles as well as your groin muscles attached to the

(23:40):
pubic bone of your pelvis. And where those muscles attach
the you can develop cares of the tendons, so the
soft tissue attachment to the bone. And that's what actually
differentiates a sports hernia from like a regular hernia that
people have heard about.

Speaker 5 (23:56):
With their regular doctor.

Speaker 11 (23:59):
That you see sports tourney is primarily with explosive athletes
that do pivot kind of twisting sports, so hockey, power hitters, soccer,
and and football kind.

Speaker 5 (24:11):
Of the classics.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
How was something like this diagnosed because the injury was
first reported as a back issue and now it's a
hip injury.

Speaker 11 (24:19):
Yeah, so that gets to the rub of why I
think it's been rising in people looking for it. But
it's really what we call medicine often a diagnosis of exclusion,
meaning you've got to make sure it's not other things.

Speaker 5 (24:30):
First.

Speaker 11 (24:31):
There's really no definitive test that tells you it's a
sports turney, which is one of the hard things, but
so generally a constellation of symptoms. So where the athlete's
complaint of you often do some plain X rays make
sure there's not a bone issue. MRI can definitely show
some inflammation in the area, but it's really a diagnosis

(24:52):
of making sure it's not other things first and then
coming to this diagnosis.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
So reading that surgery in the off season is a possibility.
So what determines whether or not surgery is going to
be needed.

Speaker 11 (25:04):
Yes, essentially the failure of non surgical care. So typically
we'll begin athletes with a short period of rest, just
like you would another soft tissue injury. It can vary
by severity, you know, four to six weeks. But if
an athlete proves that they cannot come back to their exclusive,
their explosive sports afterwards, then surgery is often indicated. The

(25:29):
surgery is something that's been kind of developed and enhanced
and gotten better in the last ten fifteen years. Recent
studies have found about a ninety percent success of return
into sports after this surgery.

Speaker 2 (25:42):
So, but he could still perhaps play through something like
this despite kneeding surgery down the road.

Speaker 11 (25:48):
Yeah, that that is a tough question. And then there
you get to one of the man one of the
really difficult issues sometimes with with where an athlete is
in a contract with where with where a.

Speaker 5 (25:59):
Team is the season.

Speaker 11 (26:02):
I think if an if an athlete feels like they
can perform at a at a high level, that helps
the team and their pain level is acceptable.

Speaker 5 (26:10):
Yeah, you're it's right.

Speaker 11 (26:11):
Most sometimes you can play with it and have and
then have surgery in the off season. You've actually seen
that with several hockey players recently. Now, you do have
to be careful if you let a sports hernay get
too bad and that soft tissue injury gets too severe,
then it can lead to a complete hernia and a
more compar like a more involved surgery. So there is

(26:32):
a bit of a line that he'd be working with
the sports medicine team.

Speaker 2 (26:35):
Let's just say, for example, he has what we'll call
typical sports hernia surgery as soon as the off season
gets here, which frankly feels like it's going to get
here sooner rather than later. How would that impact the
next season or is off season training that sort of stuff?

Speaker 11 (26:50):
Yeah, so's it's a three month recovery process. Of course,
that a lot of that's gonna happen in the off season,
and then he would have kind of a hardening conditioning period.
But again, it's a reasonably good ninety percent success and
back to play. So that's that's reasonably favorable for him.

Speaker 2 (27:08):
Let's talk about Cam Taylor britt So, he came out
of the game against Pittsburgh with a foot injury. He
was in a boot in the locker room on Monday
using a scooter surgery, likely for what is being called
a Liz Frank injury. I've heard this term before, but
I'm not sure I know what it is. What is
a Liz Frank injury?

Speaker 5 (27:25):
Yeah, so that's unfortunate.

Speaker 12 (27:27):
One.

Speaker 11 (27:27):
Liz Frank injuries are a really difficult injury to the
ligaments that hold the bones in the middle of your foot.
So if you think about your foot and you think
about the arch of your foot, there there's a constellation
of little bones in there called the qneiforms, and they
help your foot kind of move and bend and twist
and do all the things that your foot can do

(27:48):
to accommodate to the ground. And when you tear those
ligaments that join those bones together, it's just a really
bad injury. You just get athletes put so much stress
on their foot. Kind of notorious for giving people persistent problems.

Speaker 2 (28:02):
What is the timeline the likely timeline we're we're looking
at here from surgery to him being able to be
back on the field again.

Speaker 12 (28:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (28:11):
So, like like a lot of these injuries, they occur
on a spectrum. Basically, if the care is bad enough
and the bones aren't lined up perfectly, surgeries indicated not
generally speaking, the surgery requires six weeks of not walking
on the foot, so boot and scooter, six weeks of
kind of gradually introducing weight, and then three months is

(28:34):
kind of rehab. So overall it's it's generally considered to
be six months for full sports clearance. So yeah, and
even then you see ten to fifteen percent of guys
have some persistent pain in the arch of their foot,
so it's it's a tough one for for Cam.

Speaker 12 (28:52):
Unfortunately.

Speaker 2 (28:53):
All right, one more Cam sample defensive end. He has
an oblique strain. And these injuries to me always sound
more benign then they end up being. So walk me
through the different grades and then what each one of
them may suggest in terms of the timeline for Cam.

Speaker 12 (29:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (29:09):
Yeah, So the oblique muscles like these are the core
muscles along the side of your six pack, help you
to twist and stabilize your core. The plastic muscle grading
system that everybody knows is one to three. So one
is better, three is worse, three is usually you got
more bruising, maybe even a deficit in the muscle. Now, actually,

(29:31):
really interesting data moen these injuries from Major League Baseball.
They track the injuries really close. They found that for
grade ones, generally for hitters, it's about three weeks for
return to play. So if we kind of extrapolate from
some of that for a low grade injury, you're looking
at three weeks for a higher grade injury up to six.

Speaker 5 (29:52):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (29:54):
You know it feels like we talk about this with
baseball players all the time. Does this sort of injury
for a higher contact sport complicate things?

Speaker 11 (30:03):
Yeah, I think, I mean, I think it does. Yeah,
I mean I I just give a little bit of
research for this. The best data I found was from baseball.
But yeah, football adds the whole other level of contact,
as you said, and getting hit there and the constant,
uh you know, potential to reinjure that muscle.

Speaker 5 (30:21):
So and I do think it's a little harder.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
Yeah, certainly seems like a tremendous insight. As always, Doctor
Trevor Wilkes from Orthos Sincy. We appreciate the time we will. Chatson,
thanks so much, thanks for having me. That's our guy,
Doctor Trevor Wilkes from Orthos Sincy. I say it every
week because I believe it. The great thing about Orthos
Sincy is they have specialists and locations all over the
Tri States. This includes walk in orthopedic urgent care weekdays

(30:44):
nine am to nine pm and Saturdays nine am to
one pm at both Edgewood and Anderson. Easy because you
don't need an appointment and cheaper than going to an er.

nine away from four. This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Big
Noon Kickoff is coming to UC on Saturday, uh the
morning before the BYU game on Saturday night. John Cunningham
be director of Athletics at you see is gonna talk

(32:06):
Big noon Kickoff with us coming up in just about
fifteen minutes Wes Miller in the five o'clock hour, as
the Bearcats gets set to take on Louisville Downtown on
Friday nights, Do I saw Rick Buring's name on the screen,
Then it popped off, will okay? Is Rick not with us?
Rick is en route? I saw Rick last night. I

(32:29):
went to the Xavier game. I saw the Musketeers make
a bunch of threes against Old Dominion, and we talked
about how Rick would be joining us on his way
to Mount Pleasant, Michigan to call the NKU Central Michigan
game tomorrow night.

Speaker 1 (32:44):
You have a bad signal.

Speaker 2 (32:45):
Could be a bad signal. Maybe in the middle of nowhere,
maybe he just simply doesn't want to talk to me,
And could you blame him for that? I think the
answer is absolutely not. I don't know that last night's
performance will make anybody feel any better about the current
trajectory of Xavier's basketball season. They have an MTE this
weekend in Charleston where they're gonna play Georgia on Friday

(33:08):
and then either Clemson or West Virginia on Sunday. But
they you could tell that there was a concerted effort
to rebound the ball better, which has been an issue.
They obviously made seventeen threes. They were great from outside.
That is not a very good Old Dominion team. What
has been uncanny, I think over the first five games,

(33:30):
including last night, and including in the two games they won,
specifically the Maris game, is how poor they've been shooting twos,
including being right at the rim. Like if you go
back to the first game of the season they played Marist,
I felt like they paraded to the rim pretty well,
they just couldn't finish. I think they had three miss

(33:52):
dunks last night. So we'll see, you know, they when
they lost the way they to Santa Clara, Folks who
thought they're gonna be lucky to win like four games
in the Big East. I haven't seen the bottom feeding
teams in the Big East quite yet. It's gonna be
fun to watch Connecticut play Arizona tonight. By the way,

(34:16):
I think there's gonna be a better gauge and look,
nobody expects them to be a tournament team. Frankly, the
concept seems laughable when you just got beaten by Santa
Clair in a game that you trailed by thirty four
at one point. They were competitive ish for twelve to
fifteen minutes against Iowa on Friday night. But teams do

(34:39):
get better, teams do coalesce. I'm not sure that they're
gonna coalesce enough to be as relevant as Musketeer fans
want them to be, but perhaps they took a step
last night. We will see NKU and Central Michigan tomorrow
from Mount Pleasant, Michigan on ESPN fifteen thirty. Rick and
Jim Kelch will have that call. Even if Rick I

(35:03):
promise you he didn't forget, I'm gonna guess there're somewhere
middle of Michigan. Bad cell service or maybe he and
Jim are just having such a good time with each
other that they don't want a phone call for me
to to interrupt. Uh, we could we could take Mike's call.
Maybe Michael talks Savior basketball with us. Mike, you can

(35:25):
fill in for Rick Boring. How are you?

Speaker 13 (35:28):
Oh no, can you hear me?

Speaker 5 (35:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (35:31):
Can you take me off the speaker phone please?

Speaker 12 (35:33):
Yeah?

Speaker 14 (35:34):
Yeah, yeah, Well kind of the craft procedure thing I'm
going through. Okay, good to hear your voice. Sounds like
you're doing well. Hope the family's good.

Speaker 2 (35:46):
Mike. I am doing I am doing wonderful. My life
is great. I'm more concerned about you.

Speaker 14 (35:52):
Well, I'm doing the best I can. Oh, that's all
I can do. How it's gonna end up? So okay,
it's a wrecking situation. But anyway, a couple of things
I wanted to mention Kenny Anderson prior to my basketball tirade.
I'm praying so hard for Kenny to get in that hole.

(36:14):
I don't know, were you old enough to get to
watch him play at the time, well.

Speaker 2 (36:18):
Not in his prime, no, at the very very end, yes,
but not when he was at his peak in uh
In you know, I mean the best year he had
was eighty one when he was MVP, but he was
awesome in the seventies. Much of that but well before
my time.

Speaker 14 (36:33):
And it was funny because I mean anybody would would agree.
Initially it was Augusttanic College. What the hell are you.

Speaker 2 (36:41):
Talking about in the middle of Illinois, I.

Speaker 14 (36:44):
Mean, just nowhere though, and look look what turned out.
But I just think the greatest thing, Well, the guy
was just just so poised and accurate with his throws
and such a great leader. But the guy is just
such a wonderful human being. I mean, all the I

(37:06):
think he does to help other people. I just think
he deserves all the kudos that Cincinnati could ever give anybody.

Speaker 2 (37:13):
You'll get no argument for me or I think anybody
else listening to this conversation. What what he has done
in his post playing and coaching career with the Ken
Anderson alliance has been uh, has been awesome. It's been
awesome to watch. You will find no bigger proponent of
Ken Anderson's Hall of Fame case than me. You know,
to me when Ken Stabler got in, because I thought

(37:37):
if you looked at those two side by side, they
were they were pretty similar. Ken Stabler gets in the
Hall of Fame. Number one he won a Super Bowl.
Number two, we had an awesome nickname. And number three
he played for a team that was a national brand.
You can't say those things necessarily about Ken Anderson. But
it's interesting, and this is this is a very unscientific
way of looking at it. If you look at Pro

(37:57):
Football References Hall of Fame, they call it a Hall
of Fame comparison to him, players whose career was of
similar quality and shape. Among the players listed on Ken
Anderson's page, Dan Fouts Hall of Famer, Joe Montana Hall
of Famer, and we're talking about stats, Terry Bradshaw Hall

(38:17):
of Famer, Bob Greasy Hall of Famer, Warren Moon Hall
of Famer. Now you might say, well, wait a minute.
You know Montana and Bradshaw combined to win eight titles.
Sure Moon doesn't have any. Dan Fouts doesn't have any,
and so you know, the obvious way to look at
it is he didn't win a title, so he's not in.

(38:38):
I think it's a little myopic to look at it
that way. I think when you look at the overall
statistical body of work, he should he should be in Canton.

Speaker 14 (38:46):
And he just had a way about him. As I said,
his poise seemed I wasn't in a huddle, but it
seemed like his teammates really looked up to him, So
I just wanted to It's I don't know if he's listening,
but Kenny, we're praying.

Speaker 2 (39:01):
For Ken listens to this show all the time. He
texts me during the show occasionally, so yes, there's a
decent chance Ken is hearing us talk about him right now.

Speaker 5 (39:09):
Mike Cool, That's awesome.

Speaker 14 (39:11):
Made my day right there. I'm wondering if the Kentucky
folks are missing mister John Calipari right now, because Arkansas
is real happy to have him.

Speaker 2 (39:22):
John Caliperry is a great coach. There are two contrasting styles.
The thing about college basketball now is every coach in
the country is trying to do what John Calipari did
for a decade plus, which is coach a new team
every year. Right in this era of college basketball, John
Calipery was ironically a little bit late to adapt to

(39:42):
it because he was still, you know, focusing his team
building around freshman. But Mark Pope and many others are
trying to do with John Calipery did it UK for
a very long time, and Frankly did it Memphis, which
is coach a new team every year. I think Kentucky's
gonna end up being pretty good. You've got to get
more locked in defensively. They've got to figure out ways

(40:03):
to look better cohesively their schedule in the first I mean,
they've already played a Louisville team that can win the
national championship and a Michigan State team that can make
a very very deep run. They still have Saint John's
on their schedule, like they're They're gonna have to do
a lot of learning on the fly against a schedule
that is, in many respects gonna be pretty unforgiving. But

(40:25):
he was at a loss last night. Mike. There's no
getting around it. I gotta hit the top of the
hour man.

Speaker 5 (40:30):
Okay, yeah, do you think that?

Speaker 14 (40:33):
Do you think that the Louisville game will be more
of a learn good learning experience for the Bearcatcher. They
have a chance to win.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
I think it's gonna be a learning experience either way, Mike,
I'll put it that way. They have their work cut out.
The Cardinals are awesome, So are you it's four o'clock
on ESPN fifteen thirty You sure have it's five minutes
after four. This is ESPN fifteen thirty one. Bowlegs. Thank
you for listening today. Hopefully you're having wonderful wins. Day
afternoon's go'll be really busy on UC's campus on Saturday.

(41:08):
Big Noon Kickoff is going to broadcast from UC's campus
the Fox pregame Show, and that is going to set
the stage for the Bearcats versus b YU on Saturday night.
Finally a nip at night and all of this the
day after west Miller's team upsets Louisville. There I said,

(41:29):
it so a lot going on here to talk about
everything happening around UC athletics with a specific focus on Saturday.
The director of Athletics at the University of Cincinnati, John Cunningham,
it's awesome to have you as always.

Speaker 5 (41:40):
How are you good, mo, How.

Speaker 7 (41:43):
Are you doing?

Speaker 2 (41:43):
I'm doing well. This is gonna be fun on Saturday.
How does something like Big Noon Kickoff showing up at UC?
How does this happen?

Speaker 6 (41:51):
Well, I mean, we've set all your Saturday with us.
Saturday is going to be a long day. It's gonna
be a lot of fun.

Speaker 5 (41:57):
Obviously.

Speaker 6 (41:58):
I think the first thing that happened was we got
selected to be the big Fox eight pm game, So
that's that's always a huge deal. We got that night game,
Nip at Night that we always talk about. Haven't had
one of those in a while, so I think our
fans are gonna be excited. You know, wear black, show out,
sold out, you know, one of those moments at Knippert

(42:18):
that we all we all talk about love and so
that's gonna be fun. But then along with that, you know,
it's announced that we're gonna get big Neon kickoff. Last
time we had that is when we played Oklahoma a
few years ago. And then you know, just to have
that whole crew come in, Matt Lioner, Brady Quinn, mark
Ingram and of course Urban Meyer gave portnoy. I mean,
it's just it's just such a good, cool group of

(42:41):
guys to come in and have us on that national stage.
You know, you just can't buy publicity like that, so
we need people to show up, show out and make
it a great atmosphere and make.

Speaker 5 (42:52):
It a great day.

Speaker 2 (42:52):
Yeah, should look awesome. Does does Fox just call you
late on Saturday or first thing Sunday. Are you giving
a heads up that, look, this may be a possibility.
How does this work?

Speaker 6 (43:03):
It was a seven am Sunday morning call from Brett
or Mark, So that's what it was. And you know,
Brett's great for our conference, and so he is working
with Fox to try to figure it out. And so
so he called and said, hey, is it going to
be great at Cincinnati. I said absolutely, we'll We'll show
up and make it special. And so that was my

(43:24):
promise to him. So we need people to to be
on our campus in the morning. Starts at ten am,
you know, arrivally, get there ten to noon is the show.
It's gonna be.

Speaker 5 (43:34):
It's gonna be a great day, all right.

Speaker 2 (43:36):
So how will it work? Early on Saturday morning? Line up,
get a ticket, first come, first serve, First come, first serve.
How does it work.

Speaker 6 (43:44):
It's first comfort service.

Speaker 7 (43:45):
It opened.

Speaker 6 (43:46):
They opened up the gates into the area at six am,
so that's when the well, that's when the interest line,
entrance line opens up. So you know, get there, get
there as soon as you can if you want to
be in the in the front, but if you want
to sleep in a little bit, because it's gonna be
a long day. You know, certainly you arrive at nine
point thirty, you'll still be in and around the program
and get to see the show. You'll just be a

(44:07):
little bit further back. But it's all about, you know,
that energy level that you're always looking for on national television.
You know that that show kicks off and we want
to make sure people see the Bearcats represent for that
type of environment.

Speaker 2 (44:21):
All right, So Ferance Line opens up at six, The
pregame party starts today thirty. They go on the air
at ten am. The game is at eight o'clock. What
happens between twelve o'clock and eight.

Speaker 5 (44:31):
O'clock, that's the fun part.

Speaker 6 (44:34):
You can do whatever you want to do, you know.

Speaker 12 (44:36):
We you know we we've.

Speaker 6 (44:37):
Been saying, like I said, we've been saying Saturday with us,
you can stay here all day. If you have a
parking pass, you can use your parking pass with Big Noon.
If you want to leave, we we figured it out.
So if you want to go park Big Noon, leave,
go home, take a nap, come back.

Speaker 12 (44:51):
You can do that.

Speaker 6 (44:53):
You can stay around, stay around here and obviously restaurants
and and things going on, and just have fun all day.
Make it a full day tailgating, so it's up to you,
but we really need people to be there in the
morning and then obviously be there for the game and
and just making a Bearcat.

Speaker 2 (45:09):
Day A big part of anything like that, are the signs.
Are you giving away a prize for some of the
better signs.

Speaker 6 (45:16):
There's a there's a five hundred dollars prize that we're
giving away for the best sign that we that we see,
so that will be certainly a possibility. And then we
have a lot of fun giveaways throughout the throughout the
morning as well. So we've got sponsors that are giving
away a couple of electric bikes. I mean, we're doing
some big thing. We're gonna give away some Jordian gear.

(45:38):
So we're doing some things just to have some fun
and really obviously for the student population, but also for
anybody that shows up and wants to be a part
of it.

Speaker 2 (45:46):
And this is right there in the Bearcat Commons, so
it's it's a stone's throw from different stadium. It's a huge,
wide open area. So space in and of itself is
not going to be an issue.

Speaker 5 (45:55):
Correct, that's correct, Yep, yep.

Speaker 6 (45:58):
Space is gonna be an issue. It's a great look
for our campus because it's right there, you know, next
to t uc and just that backdrop that we've used
for college game Day in the past, and then of
course Big Newon previously, so that's where it's at. And
you know, parking again available in and around campus if
you have a parking pass, you can park in the
garage that you have a parking pass for. There's also

(46:20):
day day parking as well available. So get down here,
spend some time, have some fun, have a little breakfast
and watch Big Neon.

Speaker 2 (46:27):
How much fun is it going to be? I know
you're asked about this and you come on and talk
about this with me all the time. How much fun
is it going to be to have a Nippett night
game on Saturday.

Speaker 6 (46:38):
It's it's the best thing that we do and we
do it so well, and that's why it's frustrating for
me and fans when we don't get those night games.
So we're getting on. It's it's a great opponent. Obviously
by us had a heck of a year, but we
still have a lot to play for and a chance
to get to Dallas and compete for a Big twelve championship,

(46:58):
and so it's just know, let's let's win with our
environment and show up and just make sure we make
it tough on the Cougars.

Speaker 2 (47:05):
John Cunningham is with us, the director of Athletics Seth
University of Cincinnati. The pregame party for Fox Big Noon
Kickoff starts at eight thirty entrance line. Entrance line opens
at six am. The show itself airs from ten o'clock
in the morning until noon and then Saturday with us
where you could tailgate, hang out, enjoy concessions before the
game at eight o'clock. That is going to be happening

(47:26):
all afternoon. It would be awesome if all of this
unfolds amid the afterglow of a of a UC win
at the Heritage Bank Center over Louisville. The Cardinals are terrific.
West Miller's team is off to a four to zero start.
Walk me through how a game like that comes about.

Speaker 6 (47:45):
Yeah, I mean it really goes back to you know,
these early these early games you'll see them all over
the country are largely played neutral site, and it's almost
replacing you know, those those tournaments that you had where
you went to Maui and played three neutral site games,
or you went to the Bahamas and played three neutral
site games. A lot of those are going away, and
so this year we have essentially we have our three

(48:07):
neutral site games. You know, obviously downtown Cincinnati. We'll go
back to Louisville, but play a neutral site in Louisville
next year at their neutral site, and then we'll go
to we'll go to South Carolina and play a neutral
site game, and then we'll go to Land and play
neutral site game versus versus Georgia. So it's just kind
of the way it works. A lot of it has

(48:28):
to do with your net rating, a lot of it
has to do with you know, it's it's hard. These
games have to be a two way street. It's hard
to get it lined up to where you can get
home and homes.

Speaker 2 (48:37):
We got a home and home.

Speaker 6 (48:38):
Versus Dayton this year. We always have the home and
home versus Xavier. So we're always gonna have some really
good home and homes, but we're also going to play
some neutral site games.

Speaker 5 (48:45):
Just kind of the way of the world.

Speaker 6 (48:47):
And so that's how that's how it got going. And
you know, we've played dating down there a couple of times.
Now we have Louisville. It will be a great game,
great atmosphere, and big time college basketball.

Speaker 2 (48:57):
No question about that. Friday night into Saturday gonna be
a loaded weekend. It should look awesome on National TV.
Bearcat Commons on Saturday afternoon or Saturday morning, rolling through
Saturday afternoon all the way until nip at Night is
the Bearcat's host BYU on Saturday evening. I know you're
going to be busy. I know you are busy, so
we appreciate the time and we'll see you this weekend. John,

(49:19):
thanks so much.

Speaker 6 (49:20):
Always good to talk to you, though.

Speaker 12 (49:22):
Take care. You're the best.

Speaker 2 (49:23):
John Cunningham, the director of Athletics at the University of Cincinnati. Again,
the entrance line opens at six thirty and the pregame
pre show party starts. I'm sorry, I screwed that up.
The entrance line opens at six, the pre show party
starts at eight thirty. The show goes on the air
at ten o'clock. Concessions, giveaways, they'll have a sign contest,

(49:44):
and then Saturday with us starting at noon all the
way till six o'clock. The Bearcat's football team. It's going
to be like a version of Homecoming on Saturday at
UC Wes Miller is going to join us in the
five o'clock hour, and I'm told we are going to
hear from the former World's Way champion Mike Tyson, who's
going to be in town this weekend as well. There's
a lot going on. It is fourteen fifteen minutes after

(50:06):
five o'clock Rick Broing. We have tracked down Rick Broing,
and so Rick is going to join us from somewhere
on the road between here in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Also,
I need to mention this, So you heard our guy
Mike before the top of the hour called in and
wanted to talk about Ken Anderson, who's been named a
semi finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And
I said, as we were talking about Ken's Hall of

(50:29):
Fame resume Hall of Fame candidacy, I said, look, there's
a there's a good chance that Ken is listening to
this conversation. And lo and behold, at exactly four o'clock
a text from the great Ken Anderson. Yes we're listening.
Thank you for the kudos. How cool is that? Rick

(50:52):

Speaker 2 (51:50):

Rick Broorings. We have found Rick. Rick is in routes.
He's going to call the game tomorrow nk U versus
Central Michigan, the alma mater of Dan Marley, the alma
mater of Fox nineteen meteorologist Katherine Bodak. That game is
tomorrow night. Rick obviously also the proprietor of musketeer report

(52:13):

Speaker 16 (52:17):
That's a good question, though, somewhere in the beautiful state
of Ohio.

Speaker 2 (52:21):
Really, you haven't even made it to Michigan yet.

Speaker 6 (52:24):
No, we're like an hour outside that.

Speaker 2 (52:27):
Have you been to Mount Pleasant, Michigan before?

Speaker 5 (52:30):
This is the first I hear.

Speaker 2 (52:32):
It's nice.

Speaker 12 (52:34):
I hear it's pleasant.

Speaker 2 (52:37):
Let's talk about the game last night. You know, I
went to the game last night. I went saw the
Musketeers beat Old Dominion. I sat, I sat behind you
at the game.

Speaker 12 (52:48):
Are you that a question?

Speaker 2 (52:49):
Oh no, it's I was looking for. I wanted you
to acknowledge that I was there, because you you barely
acknowledged me when I was. I wanted to see if
you noticed that I even came to the game last night.

Speaker 7 (53:01):
What did you want me to do?

Speaker 16 (53:03):
I'm sorry, I thought you were watching the game. I
didn't want to you want me to turn around, stand
up and stop it for you?

Speaker 5 (53:09):
I was.

Speaker 2 (53:09):
I was hoping for, like, you know, sort of continuous
rolling insight commentary from you that would just sort of
make the experience unique. But that's okay. You were very,
very busy. You know, this is the first time I'd
seen the Musketeers in person. I'm not sure what everybody's
so angry about. They looked like the greatest team of
all time?

Speaker 5 (53:27):
Yeah, how about that last night?

Speaker 16 (53:29):
For last night's performance, I mean it was I think
a lot of it had to do with old dominion,
the type of team they were, and the way that
matchup set up for Xavier play. You have to acknowledge
that that was a completely different Xavior offense from what
we've been seeing over the first few games.

Speaker 5 (53:46):
It was.

Speaker 16 (53:47):
It was definitely a revelation for fantom attendance.

Speaker 2 (53:49):
They will play two games against high major opponents Friday
against Georgia and then either Clemson or West Virginia. What
do you expect to learn about the Musketeers and do
they have a prayer of winning either?

Speaker 16 (54:04):
I don't think their chances are great, But pretty much
all of the teams that we're talking about in that
grouping are mostly new rosters trying to figure it out.

Speaker 5 (54:13):
I don't think.

Speaker 16 (54:14):
Any of them are playing great basketball right now, so
I think their games, you'll have a chance. And the
biggest thing that I'm interested to find out about this
leager team is, you know, as good as they looked
against Old Dominion, as good as that smaller starting lineup.
Look where they have Yovan Malisovich at the five. They
can space the floor a little bit more, shoot the

(54:36):
three a little bit better at all the positions. Can
they rebound with that group against high major competition? Can
they defend the post with that group against high major competition?
I think that's what we're about to find out in Charleston.

Speaker 2 (54:48):
Why are they so bad offensively near the rim?

Speaker 6 (54:52):
I think because their big.

Speaker 16 (54:55):
Men have not figured it out at all yet. I mean,
the guys that they thought were going to be starting year.
Anthony Robinson, you know, he's playing twenty seven minutes in
the first game, played twenty four the next few games,
and then all of a sudden, he's not playing at
all anymore. He played seven minutes in last night's game.
He didn't check in until there were fourteen minutes in
the second half. I think that's where a lot of

(55:17):
your problems starts. You just you're getting no production out
of the guys you thought were going to be your
most talented big men. So now all of a sudden
you having to kind of scramble and go to a
smaller lineup and really space the floor and shoot a
lot more jump shots. And I think we're you know,
this Charleston event is going to show us how much

(55:37):
they're going to pay for that against big East like
competition you.

Speaker 2 (55:41):
Know you mentioned and Xavier is one of them, right,
Coaches trying to figure out what they have on the
fly and in some cases against really good competitions. Xavier
had to play a game on the road against Iowa.
Coaches have jumped on the bandwagon that we need like
four preseason games. I may have asked you this, and
pardon me if I have. If you where college basketballs are,

(56:01):
what would the preseason look like given the fact that
we are in a day and age where so many
teams are trying to figure out what they have and
in many cases brand new rosters entirely.

Speaker 5 (56:13):
And I here's what I want to know.

Speaker 16 (56:15):
Can I get access to whatever the coaches meeting was
where they all decided they were going to use that
as the new buzz term every interview I've heard it
from every coach this year. I think that we need
to have more preseason games.

Speaker 12 (56:28):
Now.

Speaker 16 (56:28):
I'm not necessarily against the idea I'm just fascinated by
how they all had the exact same talking point going
into the season. But yeah, I love We talked about
this when we did the preview show in Studio MO
that I love exhibition season now where you know, granted,
it'd be better if these games were regular season games
that meant something, but since most of these teams aren't

(56:51):
going to play many of those types of matchups against
each other, I love the idea of getting these high
major meetings like a Kentucky Purdue game in the preseason
as an exhibition.

Speaker 5 (57:01):
So yeah, I say the more the better. With those,
I would take three or four of them.

Speaker 2 (57:05):
Can NK you beat Central Michigan.

Speaker 16 (57:09):
Well, I think it's going to be a really good
test for them.

Speaker 5 (57:11):
You know that all of their results.

Speaker 16 (57:13):
So far have been kind of outlaw a results, except
for maybe the East Tennessee State game.

Speaker 5 (57:19):
East Tennessee State was ranked about one hundred and.

Speaker 16 (57:21):
Twenty spots higher than them in ken Pom, so it
was a good matchup on the road.

Speaker 5 (57:25):
They got off to.

Speaker 16 (57:25):
A terrible start and they end up losing by double digits.
That's what I think you're trying to avoid. And the
Central Michigan game. It's another team that's ranked ahead of
you in Ken Palm, but it's a closer matchup and
you just got to get off to a better start
on the road to give yourself a chance. The Tennessee game,
obviously there were some limitations in that one physically going
to get up against their big men that were always

(57:47):
going to make that a very difficult matchup. And then
the two non Division one games don't really tell us
a lot other than NK.

Speaker 5 (57:53):
You can score a lot of.

Speaker 16 (57:54):
Points against lower level competition, so this is going to
be a really good measuring stick for the Norse.

Speaker 2 (58:00):
That'll be an or night on ESPN fifteen thirty. You
don't know where in Ohio you are.

Speaker 16 (58:07):

Speaker 2 (58:10):

long until you get to Mount Pleasant?

Speaker 16 (58:16):
Well arrived there were probably more like nine ish after
we stop to eat, we're on past or about an
eight o'clock arrival.

Speaker 5 (58:24):
As it currently stands very good.

Speaker 2 (58:26):
We'll have a good time, be safe, and we'll be
listening tomorrow. Rick, Thank you so much.

Speaker 5 (58:31):
Hey Mo, it was a pleasure seeing at the Xavier
game last night.

Speaker 2 (58:34):
It was nice to be seen at the Davor game.
Only two people asked me what I was doing there,
and you weren't one of them, so that was nice.

Speaker 16 (58:40):
That's not true. I actually questioned whether things were all
right at your house, worried about you when I saw
you there.

Speaker 2 (58:46):
No, everything's great, though, A fair question pretty much any
day of the year.

Speaker 5 (58:50):
Rick, Thank you, Thanks both.

then the UC got Butch Jones, and Butch Jones had
a quarterback by the name of Dan Lefever. And when

(59:16):
Butch came to Cincinnati, I was asked, do you want
to have Dan Lefever on the show, And It's like, yeah, fine, whatever,
So we had dan Lefever on and then like six
weeks later, the UC folks were like, you want to
have dan Lefever again? Like, yeah, I don't know, man,
I kind of good, kind of good on Dan Leafever.

which means he was there but he wasn't throwing. Let

(01:00:59):
me make this very simple. Okay, if the Bengals are
out of it, and I know realistically, okay, season's over,
but mathematically there's a chance Joe Burrow should play on Sunday.
One guy's old and has a bum arm and he's
not practicing. The other guy's not old and he's healthy
enough to full go play that guy play. Joe Burrow,

Speaker 18 (01:02:16):
Hey, good?

Speaker 14 (01:02:16):
How are you?

Speaker 2 (01:02:17):
I'm well, there's a lot going on. We have a
lot to discuss.

Speaker 18 (01:02:20):
We've got a lot to get to.

Speaker 2 (01:02:21):
Tickets have been in the news recently because there's so
many games, so many events going on right now now.
AI is an inescapable part of our everyday lives. Right
You can't go anywhere without AI infiltratings, in some cases helping,
in some cases not helping. AI is going to impact
how we buy tickets? Is the positive? Is the impact
going to be positive or negative? For an average fan

(01:02:44):
like myself?

Speaker 19 (01:02:45):
I think we don't know, yeah, which is kind of
my response to most things with AI. But I think
clearly there's a problem, right for consumers. If you want
to buy a ticket online and you Google you know,
Bengals Browns, whatever, Bengals Steelers, whatever game it is that
you want to go to, then those c places pay

(01:03:05):
large amounts of money for search engine optimization to show
up with the pop at the top of your search. Right,
But you still have Sea Geek, you still have stub Hub,
you still have Vivid, you still have ticketmasks, and you
have to go through each one of them individually to
try to find vastly different prices seatability.

Speaker 18 (01:03:23):
Right, So all of those things are a really big
headache for the consumer.

Speaker 19 (01:03:27):
Well, recently, AI developers kind of announced that just despite
the fact that before when you went to AI, AI
could only just pull a bunch of information, kind of
the next frontier of AI is AI having agentic capabilities
agency right to do things online. I mean, it is

(01:03:49):
a little bit creepy when you think about it, but
if you want to apply that level of capability to
the issue that consumers have buying these tickets in such
a stressful, redicticulously complicated way, essentially, now what you have
is AI. You could say, Moe could say I want
tickets to the UC basketball game.

Speaker 18 (01:04:10):
Not that you've paid for a UC basketball game in
like the last decade, but say you did, say you did.

Speaker 19 (01:04:16):
And you said I'm willing to pay one hundred bucks
for seats, and then it.

Speaker 18 (01:04:22):
Could search right through all of the options and.

Speaker 19 (01:04:25):
Give you your top two or three options, and it
could also potentially buy them. If you wanted to give AI,
you know, your credit card information, which I don't think
it exists at that level, you could give it your
your price limitations. Here are the potential issues with that,

(01:04:46):
and this gets into the weeds, and listen, I'm not
a coder person, but the critics are saying these these
ticket places could embed price codes that you and I
couldn't see when we're searching for the tickets ourselves, but
that could be picked up by these bots, so it
could give them a false price, but it's not really

(01:05:08):
the price. So it's pulling up ticket information that isn't
real ticket information because there's things that are embedded in
the system that you and I can't see. So that's
a a problem. B One of the things that AI
is looking for is the highest level of like high

(01:05:28):
quality search for you. Right, So if you're saying, like,
so it would be like the best seeds in the
best location, blah blah blah, and it would score.

Speaker 18 (01:05:35):
A number from maybe like zero to ten.

Speaker 19 (01:05:37):
So these tickets are a perfect ten for your match, right,
And that's kind of how the system works now.

Speaker 18 (01:05:43):
But what they could try to do and kind of
working the.

Speaker 19 (01:05:47):
System is falsely give a higher number to return a
ticket to you that wouldn't actually be your best option,
and if you were really searching yourself, you would probably
find something better option for it.

Speaker 18 (01:06:01):
So are we moving in a direction where AI can
do this? Yes?

Speaker 19 (01:06:06):
Are there issues, Yes, a lot of them right now.
But I think the interesting thing is that by twenty
twenty nine, stats say, I mean, however much you want
to give to that that seventy plus percent of us
will forego something like a Google search and go straight
to AI to purchase tickets.

Speaker 2 (01:06:25):
I now just want to walk downtown to like third
and Maine and the guys standing there with the sign
that says I have tickets. I now just want to
talk to him. I know, right, I mean, you know,
we don't really have printed tickets anymore, so God knows
what that guy is going to give me but now
I just I want to go back to you know what,
there's a shady looking dude standing downtown, but he's fist

(01:06:46):
full of tickets.

Speaker 18 (01:06:47):
Sometimes it does it?

Speaker 19 (01:06:48):
Yeah, no, I know, And I honestly think you're gambling
as much on whatever AI would come up with as
the dude on the corner might be giving you.

Speaker 2 (01:06:55):
Speaking of gambling, so the sports gambling stories that we're
dealing with right now now with the NBA and with baseball,
they've advanced, especially in the NBA because cell phones are
being confiscated an issue here are prop bets. So are
we trending toward a reality where sports wagering is legal,
but sports prop bets are going to be off the board.

Speaker 19 (01:07:17):
I think we are moving toward a direction where there
will likely be more regulation around prop betting.

Speaker 18 (01:07:25):
And you and I talked about this very recently.

Speaker 19 (01:07:27):
In the fact that listen, these coaches, these players, we
want to say that one hundred percent of the time
they're out there giving it, they're all because they love
the sport, and also they get paid.

Speaker 18 (01:07:37):
Pretty good paychecks too.

Speaker 19 (01:07:39):
But I think it's easier for any kind of bad
character to wrap their mind around Well, I'm not really
throwing the outcome of this game. I'm just throwing the
first pitch in this inning into the dirt, right.

Speaker 18 (01:07:52):
That's a little more okay, I mean, that's not as
big of a deal, right.

Speaker 19 (01:07:55):
And so what we're starting to see is leagues trying
to crack down on this prop betting, which, by the way,
these sports books do not want because they're making a
heck of a lot more money on these prop bets
than they are on regular bets. And you have parlays
that have prop bets as part of them. It goes

(01:08:16):
from on average, the making about nine percent off of
whatever bet you're placing a closer to twenty percent, right,
So this is incredibly lucrative for them. So kind of
the first steps that we're starting to see in this
direction is MLB is now working with sports books. They're
going to cap the amount that you can wager on
these individual prop bets, right, so that people cannot have

(01:08:40):
a gazillion dollars writing on this next bitch that is thrown.

Speaker 18 (01:08:46):
And then they're.

Speaker 19 (01:08:46):
Also working to exclude prop bets from parlays.

Speaker 2 (01:08:50):
Really, yeah, not gonna be able to do the same
game parlay with their prop bet anymore.

Speaker 18 (01:08:53):
Yep, yep.

Speaker 19 (01:08:54):
In Interestingly, Ohio's Governor Mike DeWine has been saying, listen,
this is been needed for a long time. These prop
bets are incredibly dangerous, and so he's calling on other
sports leagues to say, hey, MLB is leading the charge
with us, and we need to be paying close attention.
MBA is also working with sports books right now, saying

(01:09:16):
anything that can be easily manipulated, like I'm going to
hit this next free shot or not, or the first
free shot that mo Egger is shooting in this game,
he's going to miss or hit, you know, something like
a turnover, you know, looks like a sloppy pass, that.

Speaker 18 (01:09:35):
Kind of thing.

Speaker 19 (01:09:36):
Those kinds of things are working to crack down on
and listen, I mean.

Speaker 18 (01:09:39):
This is this is across any sport. This could be happening.

Speaker 19 (01:09:43):
So now we have the NFL and this is just
kind of new information circulating a memo to all the
teams saying there are going to be certain prohibited wagers
that are plays that can be determined by one person.
So think about a quarterback. First p that I'm throwing
is going to be an incompletion right right. I mean
there's very few players, you know, kicker, maybe they can

(01:10:05):
say I'm going to influence entirely myself the outcome of
this play, but there are a few players on that
field that can do that.

Speaker 18 (01:10:11):
Those kinds of bets they're looking to.

Speaker 2 (01:10:14):
Crack down on Amy Wagner's with this Dean Dorton private wealth.
We we have talked on a number of occasions about
you know, just the saturation of streaming and you know
how much it costs for sports fans, especially those of
us who love a lot of different sports, to watch games.
We got a minor victory. We've gotten a minor victory
with Major League Soccer.

Speaker 18 (01:10:34):
Yeah, and I listen, let's take our wins and we
can get out there.

Speaker 2 (01:10:37):
Absolutely yes, because every.

Speaker 19 (01:10:39):
Time you want to watch a particular sport on a
different night, they're having to go to a different you know,
subscription service.

Speaker 18 (01:10:47):
So this is a huge win.

Speaker 19 (01:10:48):
So if you are a soccer fan, MLS fans had
to pay for in an Apple higher level of.

Speaker 2 (01:10:57):
The season past. Yeah, Apple, which is a really good product,
but it does cost Yes.

Speaker 19 (01:11:01):
So starting in twenty twenty six, Apple is saying, hey, guys,
if you have a regular Apple subscription, you're good. We
will carry all MLS sports. Interesting too for you F
one fans.

Speaker 18 (01:11:13):
Apple has the rights to.

Speaker 19 (01:11:15):
F one starting in twenty twenty six five year deal.
There so expecting that they will continue down the same path.
Now you can watch F one m alt sucker if
you have an existing Apple subscription. Are you still have
to pay for the Apples?

Speaker 2 (01:11:30):
Sure? But I don't have past extra tier. Yes, a
minor victory for sports victory.

Speaker 18 (01:11:36):
Let's take him when we can get him.

Speaker 5 (01:11:37):
Right now.

Speaker 2 (01:11:37):
Cincinnati is playing Louisville and basketball on Friday. Now, your
husband's a Louisville fan, you're a Kentucky fan. Your friend
Mosey UC fan? Who will you be rooting for on Friday?

Speaker 18 (01:11:48):
Obviously you see?

Speaker 7 (01:11:49):
Okay? Good?

Speaker 18 (01:11:49):
Obviously I was easy.

Speaker 2 (01:11:51):
Yeah. I thought I was going to have to like
bribe you or something.

Speaker 19 (01:11:53):
You didn't even have to think about it for a second. Remember,
my team took an absolute beating.

Speaker 2 (01:11:58):
They took a drubbing last night, well last.

Speaker 18 (01:12:01):
Night, and by Wouisville.

Speaker 2 (01:12:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 19 (01:12:03):
So I love my husband very much, but anyone up
against his cards right now.

Speaker 18 (01:12:08):
I'm right see yeah, okay to my cats, I'll take.

Speaker 2 (01:12:13):
Them very good. If the Bearcats beat Louisville on Friday.
I by about nine thirty on Friday evening. If you're
looking for something to do, I will be out somewhere celebrating. Okay,
bring your husband, Okay.

Speaker 18 (01:12:25):
Let's do that. I'm also we need to like wager.

Speaker 19 (01:12:28):
Speaking of Betts gambling, you would like to gamble on
these yeah college basketball games.

Speaker 18 (01:12:32):
We need to come up with something here.

Speaker 2 (01:12:34):
Well, you see in Kentucky don't play.

Speaker 12 (01:12:36):
I know.

Speaker 18 (01:12:37):
Oh that's true. We're on the same side of this one.
I'll keep thinking.

Speaker 2 (01:12:40):
Okay, come up with a come up with a wage.

Speaker 13 (01:14:36):
Please, what what what is Paul Danner?

Speaker 12 (01:14:39):
What is? What have you heard?

Speaker 20 (01:14:41):
I mean, I know that Zach's still here, but I
mean that cannot be true.

Speaker 12 (01:14:45):
I can't.

Speaker 13 (01:14:45):
I can't live through that.

Speaker 2 (01:14:46):
Mo Well, I don't necessarily think it's fair to hold
against Chris the failures of his dad. Chris, I think
is going to be this. This doesn't feel like a
cycle where there's like the Ben Johnson or another years
where like everybody wanted to talk to Josh McDaniels. It
doesn't feel like that guy is out there. I think,

(01:15:06):
you know, you talk about like familiar names to folks
in Cincinnati. I think Jesse Minner's name is gonna come
up a lot. But Chris Jula has been has been
coaching in the NFL for a while. He has risen
up the ranks with the La Rams. He was on
their staff when they beat the Bengals in the Super Bowl.
He has been the defensive coordinator over the last couple
of years. So I'm not gonna hold against the Chris Sula,

(01:15:31):
the failures of his dad. But it does feel like
there's legitimate interest. It does feel like there's legitimate interest
on behalf of the New York Giants and Chris Sula.
So I don't know. I don't know.

Speaker 20 (01:15:44):
We'll see, maybe maybe he can go somewhere, somewhere else,
because like I said, I feel like just the name
itself give me pts emo.

Speaker 2 (01:15:53):
Well, you know, it could be easier for his dad
to come back and we could celebrate Dave thirty years
or so after he got.

Speaker 12 (01:15:59):
Like a.

Speaker 13 (01:16:01):
Yeah, but mo, can we agree that.

Speaker 20 (01:16:03):
I feel like we know the offense doesn't really need fixing,
So I feel like the next hire should be a
defensive minded coach.

Speaker 13 (01:16:13):
Am I wrong?

Speaker 2 (01:16:15):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (01:16:16):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:16:17):
I'm looking for the best candidate, and to me, that's
doesn't really matter where your your discipline comes from. I
don't I'm looking for the best leader. I'm looking for
the person who can be who's gonna hire really good
assistance and who's going to be able to work hand
in hand with whoever's picking the players. And if that

(01:16:39):
person has an offensive background, fine, If that person is
a defensive background, fine. I know there's a school of
thought that says, well, you go from an offensive guy
to a defensive guy, from a defensive guy to an
offensive guy. I don't so much care about that. I'm
looking for somebody who's going to manage the game well,
who's going to have a positive imprint on the roster,

(01:16:59):
who players aren't gonna quit on him, and who knows
what to look for when hiring assistance.

Speaker 12 (01:17:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 20 (01:17:06):
No, is it fair to say. I mean, like I said,
you and I are about the same age. I feel
like I've seen this act before with Zach Taylor. It
looks like the team is quit.

Speaker 13 (01:17:16):
Am I wrong?

Speaker 7 (01:17:17):
Does it look that way to you?

Speaker 10 (01:17:19):
So?

Speaker 2 (01:17:19):
I think you're half right. I think the team, I
think the defensive players in mass have quit. I think
there are exceptions. I thought Miles Murphy played hard on Sunday.
But I think the difference, though, is the reason I
think you're only half right is I don't think we've
seen this before. Over the course of Zach's first six seasons,
I can't recall a time where I thought that a

(01:17:41):
lot of players just didn't care. And to me, that's
what makes this different, and that's what makes this an
indictment on Zach Taylor. This is the first time. And
there have been players who maybe weren't totally boding. Carlos
Dunlapp wanted out for a reason, and maybe there were
individual players that just didn't buy in and their effort
on showed as much. But what I saw on Sunday,

(01:18:03):
we're a whole lot of defensive guys who didn't play
hard and who seemingly didn't care. And I think that's
the first time we could say that during Zach Taylor's
time in Cincinnati. That to me is what is so
striking about what Sunday looked like. And it's why Zach Taylor,
for me, at least for the first time in six
and a half years, is firmly in the crosshairs because

(01:18:24):
it feels like a large chunk of the team has
quit on him.

Speaker 12 (01:18:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (01:18:31):
No, I just don't know what to think, because, like
I said, I mean, it's just.

Speaker 20 (01:18:37):
Even if the Bengals try, I feel like the only
game they can possibly win on the rest of the schedule.

Speaker 13 (01:18:41):
I don't know how you feel, but is the Who Care?

Speaker 21 (01:18:44):
What I'm listening is the Who Cares Loser Bowl, which
is the Bengals Browns Week seventeen because Mike McDaniel has
turned the ship around on the Dolphins. So, I mean,
the Who Cares Bowl is about the only game we
can win.

Speaker 2 (01:19:00):
It's the only I mean. I think they'll be favored
against Arizona here. I think they'll be favored against Cleveland,
and they'll be underdogs against everybody else.

Speaker 12 (01:19:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 20 (01:19:09):
I mean, the way Joe Kobe Breseette is playing, he
could probably tear up the Bengals secondary.

Speaker 2 (01:19:14):
I would think that's the thing, right, I mean, you go, okay, well,
they're gonna get carved up by Lamar Jackson and they're
gonna have a hard time with Drake May and Josh
Allen is gonna do their thing. The problem with a
really bad defense is it makes the bad offense is good.
We saw that against the Jets, right, we saw what
the New York Jets, which two weeks prior had a
game where they threw for negative ten yards. You worry

(01:19:36):
about the Cardinals, and you worry about the Dolphins, and
you worry about the Cleveland Browns, and in all likelihood
shoot or Sanders. It ain't good run, But I gotta
run man, thanks so much. He'll be well, all right,
hope you're feeling better. Zach Taylor's teams I've never thought
have quit. What I watched on Sunday was a defense

(01:19:56):
that quit. It's five o'clock on ESPN fifteen third.

Speaker 1 (01:20:00):
School is in session when the Bengals look to take
New England to task. Who new history class could get
this violent? Speaking of the Patriots? I wonder how I
would look in a powdered wig. Probably not good. Coverage
begins at nine am Sunday, stream for free on the
new and improved iHeartRadio app or ESPN fifteen thirty, the

(01:20:23):
official home of the Cincinnati Banker.

Speaker 2 (01:20:26):
Right, we are late for the hour. My apologies, oh Terrent,
well done. This is the bud Light five o'clock Happy
Hour on ESPN fifteen thirty. On Owager, we have a
loaded hour, you know. And here's the great thing about
this upcoming hour of sports talk radio number one. It's free.

(01:20:49):

me Venmo if you want. Nobody is asking for your
your home address. We're not gonna send you a pamphlet. No, No,
here's what's coming up this hour. In just a few minutes,
we're supposed to get a phone call from former World
heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. Now we've kind of been told

(01:21:10):
we don't get a lot of time with Mike. But
Mike Tyson is going to be at the hard Rock
Casino on Sunday for his one man show, and so
we're gonna talk with Mike Tyson. I believe in just
like a minute or two plus. Richard Skinner is going
to be with us to talk about the Bengals. Joe
Burrow of full participant at practice today. May he play
on Sunday? Should he play on Sunday? I think he should.

(01:21:32):
I'm not gonna be asked to examine his foot. Maybe
Richard's done that, I'm not sure. Diego Valeri, who is
a former MLS MVP, is going to be on the
show at about twenty five minutes to talk about FC
Cincinnati versus Miami and Wes Miller. My interview with Wes
Miller coming up at five forty five. All that before
six o'clock, and that at six. Dan Horden Dave Lapham

(01:21:55):
with Bengals game plan. Why would you listen to another
radio station? We got Mike, Uh, Mike Tyson is going
to be at the hard Rock Casino Downtown. He is
going to be on stage for his one man show,
which is called Return of the Mike, Live on stage,
legendary laughs with one of the icons of boxing, Iron

(01:22:19):
Mike Tyson. Tickets are available now. Go to Casino dot
hard rock dot com if you want to go see

to have you on the show. Mike, good afternoon. How

Speaker 8 (01:22:31):
I'm great, brother, how about you?

Speaker 2 (01:22:32):
I'm doing really well. A lot of folks in Cincinnati
are excited that you're coming to town. Have you spent
any time in Cincinnati before?

Speaker 8 (01:22:40):
Yeah, of course I know people in Cincinnati under the
tub family. My wife has family out there, her father
from Cincinnati.

Speaker 2 (01:22:48):
And Cincinnati, as you know, is a city with great
boxing history.

Speaker 8 (01:22:53):
Yes, and Charles from Cincinnati too, as.

Speaker 2 (01:22:56):
There, Charles Aaron Pryor, Yeah, no question about it. Yeah right, yeah,
we know our boxing here in Cincinnati. All right, Return
of the Mic, the one man Show. For folks who
haven't seen it, who are thinking about getting tickets, what's
gonna happen on Sunday night at the hard Rock Casino, Hey.

Speaker 8 (01:23:11):
Guy, It's just gonna be an algamation of story that
you already know but don't know the underlining story behind
them pretty much. I'm talking, I'm Jay Paul fight anything.
It's gonna ben It's gonna be so awesome. We have
did a show and we have had a good time.

Speaker 2 (01:23:27):
So you started this last year, right, you started a
series of one man shows. Give us an idea of
how the first run of them went.

Speaker 8 (01:23:35):
Sensation though, I had an awesome time. I'm so happy
to come to Cincinnati and do them and fee much
of my friends in Cincinnati. My wife has family in Cincinnati,
and I'm just looking forward to coming and having a
good time.

Speaker 2 (01:23:47):
What is like the story that people want to hear
most from you?

Speaker 12 (01:23:52):
I don't know a lot of this.

Speaker 8 (01:23:53):
One's gonna be a lot about probably my last fight
and with my fight coming up.

Speaker 2 (01:23:58):
All right, let's talk about the last fight. It was
about a year ago. You're going to get back in
the ring now? Is this in twenty twenty six? Is
this going to happen with Floyd Mayweather?

Speaker 8 (01:24:08):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (01:24:09):
All right?

Speaker 12 (01:24:10):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (01:24:11):
What did you what did you learn about yourself at
this stage in your in your boxing career from the
last fight that you could apply to the next one.

Speaker 8 (01:24:20):
I'm going to be a lot much healthier in this
fight than I was the last one.

Speaker 12 (01:24:24):
God willing. I'm just looking forward to it. I'm in
good shape. I never I never stopped training. I'm in
great shape.

Speaker 8 (01:24:30):
I'm ready to fight. I'm just looking forward to it.
This is making history.

Speaker 12 (01:24:33):
No one's never done this before.

Speaker 8 (01:24:35):
So many countries that bedding for us right now never
been done before.

Speaker 2 (01:24:40):
What is what is your relationship with Floyd Mayweather?

Speaker 5 (01:24:43):
Like?

Speaker 12 (01:24:45):
I respect him?

Speaker 2 (01:24:46):
What is your relationship with Jake Paul?

Speaker 22 (01:24:48):
Like?

Speaker 12 (01:24:49):
Now?

Speaker 8 (01:24:51):
I have nothing. I have no soult feelings against anybody.
I'm pretty happy.

Speaker 12 (01:24:54):
Guy.

Speaker 2 (01:24:55):
Did you did you have any idea that that fight
was going to be like? That was? That was an
immensely popular sporting event. I'll never forget that Friday night,
everybody's jammed into a bar to watch you fight Jake Paul.
Did you have any idea that you would have the
reception that you got, not just from the crowd that night,
but from people who are excited to see you step

(01:25:16):
in the ring again.

Speaker 12 (01:25:18):
Well, I did.

Speaker 8 (01:25:19):
Expect it, but not that big, to be honest, no
one expected to be that big. Come on, there's nobody
expected that I didn't expect I'd be I'd be lying
if I said I did you know my ego is
not that big, I'll.

Speaker 12 (01:25:32):
Be lying if I.

Speaker 2 (01:25:34):
And now this one, you've got to think, you know
it's it's going to be massive. Nothing against Jake Paul,
but I think of like two of the biggest names
in boxing over the last forty years, Floyd Mayweather versus yourself,
a complete and in total contrast of styles. I think
it's going to be a lot of fun.

Speaker 8 (01:25:52):
I think it will be awesome.

Speaker 2 (01:25:56):
When I'm when I'm growing up. Right in the late
eighties early nineties, Mike Tyson fights were an event, right,
Like I beg my dad, We've got to get the
pay per view. I gotta watch Mike fight. It feels
like boxing isn't where it was. What needs to happen
for that sport to get back to that point?

Speaker 12 (01:26:13):
Hey, the best need to fight the best. That's all
it needed to be said.

Speaker 8 (01:26:17):
Number one need to fight number two, the best to
fight the best, just like Listen used to be so
Crowfit did right, they fought the best to do best.

Speaker 2 (01:26:28):
Foot do you follow the sport closely?

Speaker 8 (01:26:31):
Now I'm trying to, but it gets it gets tricky
on me.

Speaker 12 (01:26:37):
No one fighting bit to me, it has a lot
to do with promotion.

Speaker 8 (01:26:41):
The best to fight the best else they had no,
they have no reason being in that contenders.

Speaker 2 (01:26:47):
Yeah, the best for the best, no question about it,
no question about it. So when you fight Floyd Mayweather,
will that be it? Or do you see yourself fighting
after that one?

Speaker 8 (01:26:59):
I really don't see myself doing it again. But you know,
anything's possible.

Speaker 12 (01:27:03):
You know, people just.

Speaker 8 (01:27:05):
I don't miss so money away, like if they want
to go bloke.

Speaker 12 (01:27:08):
So I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:27:12):
All right, Uh so Sunday evening. How long is the
show on Sunday?

Speaker 12 (01:27:18):
Probably an hour? Okay, fifty five fifty five minutes, all right?

Speaker 2 (01:27:23):
And uh, you're gonna talk a lot about the Jake
Paul fight. You're gonna talk a lot about the uh,
the fight against Floyd Mayweather.

Speaker 8 (01:27:30):
What what is I'm not gonna I'm not gonna talk
a lot about anything. I'm I mean, I'm gonna just
talk about.

Speaker 12 (01:27:35):
Everything, but a lot about anything.

Speaker 8 (01:27:37):
Yeah, it's not enough time to talk about a lot
about everything.

Speaker 2 (01:27:41):
I hear you. What is what is the one? What
is the one? Fight from back? In the day that
people want to ask you about the most.

Speaker 8 (01:27:48):
I don't know, I've never I've never. No one been
talking to me about fights lately. It's all but it's
always been about the show and entertainment and all that stuff.
And there's no basing nothing about fighting in.

Speaker 12 (01:28:01):
My show pretty much.

Speaker 2 (01:28:02):
Yeah, all right, Well, have a great time at Cincinnati.
I cannot wait for the show on Sunday.

Speaker 8 (01:28:08):
It's gonna be and I I can't wait.

Speaker 2 (01:28:10):
It's gonna be It's gonna be a lot of fun.
And uh, you know you in this town with our
fight history, our boxing history, is gonna be a blast. Mike.
I appreciate the time, man, Thanks so much.

Speaker 12 (01:28:19):
Hey, thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:28:21):
All right, there you go, Thank you very much, Mike Tyson.

good as that one next on ESPN fifteen thirty.

I would look in a powdered wig. Probably not good.

part by Postman Law and Skyline. Chilly on ESPN fifteen

Speaker 2 (01:30:06):
Based on that last interview you just heard a few
minutes ago, there are some very very early Marconi buzz
for this show, so long way to go. Richard Skinner
joins us on Wednesdays. He's with Local twelve and we
can read his work at Local twelve dot com. Is
the Bengals get said to host the New England Patriots
on Sunday? Only seven games to go? Hi Skinny, Hi

(01:30:31):
mo So.

Speaker 7 (01:30:31):
I didn't get a chance here the Mike Tyson interview
because I was busy doing some other stuff when he
after this, did he sing in the air tonight? I
chance at all?

Speaker 2 (01:30:38):
You know, we should have asked him to do that.
That was not That was not something that we were
able to get to. But perhaps perhaps the next time
we have Mike on, well, we'll see if we can
get that done. All right, Joe Burrow practiced. Is he
gonna play on Sunday?

Speaker 10 (01:30:53):
No?

Speaker 7 (01:30:53):
I think it's a long shot. He's practicing foul, although
I'm guessing he the very least split reps, if not
gave up less rep or or had less reps compared
to Jake Browning Joe Flacco. The plan was never from
the practice this, this, this, today, this is a third
straight Wednesday's missed. He's gonna throw tomorrow. We'll see how

(01:31:13):
that goes. He says he feels good. He says his
whole body feels good. We'll see. And I just think,
I I think rushing Joe Burrow back out there. I
will say this in the locker room today. So we
get to doll with Flaco's press commas. I had to
go talk to a couple of players, and I left
the locker room early to go transcribe part of Flacco.
And as I walked past Burrow's locker, He's sitting in it,
and I kid you not, he looked like he had

(01:31:34):
just been shell shocked from zero blitzes for like fifty
three plays. Like what just happened to me?

Speaker 23 (01:31:39):
I literally it took me a back, like I thought, I.

Speaker 7 (01:31:41):
Walk by now, he's got that hairdo now right where
it just drapes in his face. Sometimes it's all over
the map and needs a haircut. But I literally I
walked by him and I looked, and I talked to
another meme where I go, It's okay.

Speaker 5 (01:31:52):
I don't know, man, that looked weird.

Speaker 7 (01:31:54):
I go, shure did.

Speaker 2 (01:31:56):
So I mean, do you think he was dealing with
some sort of physical disc is there emotional trauma for
realizing there are seven more Bengals games to go? Like,
what did any idea what he's dealing with.

Speaker 14 (01:32:07):
I'll go the ladder.

Speaker 7 (01:32:08):
I'll go the ladder because again he did practice in full,
which means he got through the practice physically. Again, I
know he didn't take all the reps. I'm gonna go
with with the ladder, like, Okay, now I'm good enough
to traumas and play or I really want.

Speaker 12 (01:32:21):
To with you?

Speaker 7 (01:32:23):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:32:25):
Uh Dejon Anthony was back in practice. Can he play
on Sunday?

Speaker 12 (01:32:28):
Yay?

Speaker 7 (01:32:30):
I think he can anybody.

Speaker 2 (01:32:32):
But Ginos don't literally anybody.

Speaker 7 (01:32:34):
I'm kind of with you. I'm kind I'm very much
with you. And the weird part is that we've talked
about is that nauseum. I mean, this wasn't like something
we didn't know last year, clear evidence of last year,
and yet you said no, we're good. In fact, we're
good enough with the depth and it's not gonna matter
there either. Even though we don't want to play the
guys by him because don't think they can play.

Speaker 2 (01:32:54):
What are we doing by I keep framing it like this.
You know, if I if I if Douke Tobin worked
for me, and I go, hey man, the genostone thing
just hasn't worked, Which that's a different discussion. Who else
do we got it? The answer is, well, we can't
play any of these other guys. Well, that's that's another
damning indictment against you.

Speaker 23 (01:33:15):
Correct, it's a down one thousand percent. Look, if you
thought it was okay to run Gino and Jordan back
and say, a new coordinator with new ideas, who knows
how to handle the safety position, he's gonna make this work.

Speaker 7 (01:33:30):
You still have to have a backup plan of some kind.
You were so if you were banking on that, you
were banking on those two guys getting do all seventeen
games healthy. You can't bank on that ever in the NFL.
And yet they did. And on top of that, Sandy,
they've both been healthy, healthy, and they both stink.

Speaker 2 (01:33:46):
Has Trey Hendrickson played his last game as a Bengal man.

Speaker 7 (01:33:49):
I knew you were gonna ask that question to me.
I'm gonna say no for this reason, he's gonna have
to put up something. Whatever that time for incomes and
it may be. Okay, here's a three game stretch Ick
can excel in, which is the Dolphins, the Cardinals, and
the Browns, because we got a chance to take a lead,
and I'll be the closer and I'll close those three

(01:34:11):
games and people will think I'm the Trey Hendrickson of
you know, the last couple of seasons when I had
seventeen and a half sacks. He has to do that mode.
He's not gonna get paid. I mean, you're not going
to do this on the income of Yeah, I know
you probably made business decisions. I get it, but even
when you played, you only had really one good game,
and at thirty two years old, coming off supposedly a

(01:34:32):
hip and back and telvis and whatever other issue business
decision issues, you really gotta pay that guy, mo, I mean, Anesta,
would you really pay that guy? No, I don't think
any team will. And so he has to come back
in some capacity at some level for at least, in
my opinion, at least three games and maybe more than.
I mean, maybe he legitimately is hurt to the point

(01:34:54):
where he can't play, and he's hurt to the point
where he's hurt. I don't know if it's hurt to
the point where he can't play. But I never want
to speak for a player's injury. I just just it's
not fair. I'm not that person. But to your original question,
I do think he plays because I do think he'll
get healthy enough and whatever capaccity that is to go
out and play, like I said, at least the final
three games, to say, Okay, this is me, guys, you

(01:35:15):
see me. I know I'm about to turn thirty two,
but I can still do this.

Speaker 2 (01:35:19):
Do you get the sense that Jermaine Burton has been
burning the candle at both ends to get ready to
to get ready to replace Jamar Chase. I can't even
say it without laughing.

Speaker 7 (01:35:30):
If you'd have just done the burning candies at both
hands stop, I'd have said, sure he sure is. It's
not surprising that he is. I would have taken you
up on that part of it. Here's what's going to
be so weird about Sunday, right, So they technically only
have four receivers up at the moment. If you're going
through the whole active roster situation, which is t andre Yoshibash, Tinsley,

(01:35:52):
and Charlie Jones, and usually you keep a fist up,
and you could argue if they decide to activate Mike Kasiki,
which I do think they'll do, to carry four tight
ends in the Sunday and still carry four wide receivers,
and you know, we're good. The thing that'll be interesting
is if they elevate like Kendrick Pryor from the practice
squad on Saturday and he's active and Jermaine Burton isn't.

(01:36:12):
I mean, at that point, what are we doing?

Speaker 2 (01:36:16):
Uh? Would any of us be surprised?

Speaker 7 (01:36:18):
Though?

Speaker 22 (01:36:20):
No?

Speaker 7 (01:36:21):
No, I literally, Gilly, I like that sounds like it's
in play. If you're gonna carry five wide receivers like
you normally do and you don't trust your mane in
any way, shape or form, and you don't do you
just go to heck with it. Man, we're gonna embarrass
this guy even further until he gets his act together.
And it is such a weird circumstance because they don't
believe in him. They've they've given up on him, and

(01:36:41):
they should because he's given up on himself. And at
that point, what why why Mike Brown is he still
on the roster. I mean, I know you're trying to
probably help a kid because your father planning again, and
I'm all for that in some ways, but this kid
can't get out of his own way. At some point,
he just gon't. We can't do this anymore. We're good,
but they still I mean, I'm still on the fifty three,

(01:37:02):
the guy they can't even think about putting on. And
even this week when you're missing your best guy and
he tech we should be at least after Jamaar's gone,
one of your five best and you still might not
have him on the field, and it's a party that wonders.
It's and you know, we don't get clarification on this,
but there's a party that also wonders are they planning

(01:37:23):
on him playing? And then when Saturday comes and he
misses a Saturday meeting, which he probably will because is
what he does, then what do you do?

Speaker 2 (01:37:31):
You know, he might just not show up for the game.
I mean, there's the The possibilities with Jermaine Burton are
unfortunately endless.

Speaker 8 (01:37:38):
Thank yous, and.

Speaker 2 (01:37:40):
Seven more games of this to go. It's it's so exciting, Skinny,
Thanks so much.

Speaker 6 (01:37:44):
I'm so excited.

The Eastern Conference Semifinal is Sunday. FC Cincinnati hosting Lionel
Messi and Miami and Diego kind enough to join us

(01:39:13):
and talk about it's awesome to have you, Diego. How
are you for me? Do you hear me? Okay? Yes,
all right, there you go?

Speaker 15 (01:39:22):
You no?

Speaker 2 (01:39:23):
You sound great. I appreciate you joining us. We're stoked
for Sunday. Let's talk about round one. FC Cincinnati survives
against Columbus. What did you learn about Pat Newton's team
during that series?

Speaker 24 (01:39:36):
Yes, you know, he showed since he show a lot
of character because Columbus played really well in the series.
I think, uh, you know, after that second game, we
all thought about the momentum Columbo got after scoring four
goals and Cincinnati didn't look well most likely the first
thirty minutes until they got down a man.

Speaker 8 (01:39:59):
But third game it was going to.

Speaker 24 (01:40:01):
Be very important, most likely at home with the people,
and you know, they figured out the way to turn
around a difficult result. So that it's a big show
of character that a team that is looking for betting
a championship, and that's the most important for me in
terms of the first round what.

Speaker 2 (01:40:19):
I think of all time great Portland Timbers. You're at
the top of the list, Evander might be right behind you.
What has it been like watching him this season?

Speaker 24 (01:40:28):
Well, you know, Ivander is those is the kind of
player that you always enjoy watch that he can make
a play when the game is not the best and
and because of his ability, because of his vision of
the game. It's been a pleasure to to have the
chance to watch him live with some broadcast in the game.

(01:40:49):
Obviously here important the same, but it's that kind of player,
so it's very enjoyable. I think he motivates in a
different way when hin Miami comes and face Cincinnati. So
I'm really excited to see him in this stage, uh
in in the semi conference, semi final of the conference.

(01:41:11):
So I think it's you know, it's been a pleasure.
I I love to have those kind of players in
MLS and uh and it's been it's been so fun
and watch him play.

Speaker 2 (01:41:22):
In a normal year of Vander might be m v P,
but there's a guy named Messi that that claims that honor.
If you're pat Noon and it's about more than just him.
When Miami comes to town, you've got a long list
of things that you have to make sure don't happen
in this match on Sunday. What's on that list but
don't happen in for Cincinnati? For yeah, what what can't

(01:41:43):
you let Miami do.

Speaker 6 (01:41:47):
Well?

Speaker 24 (01:41:47):
As you say, messy, You know, it's it's difficult to
prepare something against messy, right. I think Cincinnati gotta be
focused on on the doing their job, on being.

Speaker 6 (01:41:59):
A affected right.

Speaker 24 (01:42:01):
I think has great strikers and plus Evander as you
say for me is you know, Mbi pee level. But
it's what you can't allow h against miamis having those
moments where you allow thee, the full, the whole team
to be up in the field and comfortable with the ball.

Speaker 16 (01:42:22):
Right.

Speaker 6 (01:42:22):
Sometimes you always get deeper in the field.

Speaker 24 (01:42:25):
And obviously Miami because of the way they possess the ball,
they take advantage, but of the possession and and the
position on the field. But if they're getting there, Cincinnati
cannot allow Miami to be comfortable with the ball, you
know what I mean? Like against Nashville. Uh, as soon
as Miami gets a good position in the field, higher

(01:42:46):
in the field, uh, they get comfortable. And and that's
an issue that's a big issue. Uh if if Cincinnati,
if that ever happens in the first in the game,
that is one game elimination, and Miami gets higher on
the field, you can allow them to be comfortable because
you already gets in the vall and you know from

(01:43:06):
everywhere he can assist, he can assist someone, and same
same for Messy and same same for Busquetes. So I
think that's something that gotta be on the list of
Cincinnatio and not doing stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:43:17):
It's it's gonna be an unbelievable atmosphere. You've got a
ton of star power, lots on the line. Sunday at
five o'clock, Apple TV MLS Season pasted, Diego and Honor

head coach of the Barricats, your team has played four

(01:45:11):
different types of games. What have you learned about your
team during them?

Speaker 5 (01:45:17):
Worth?

Speaker 17 (01:45:17):
Learning a lot on the fly here, And you're not
wrong in a lot of ways.

Speaker 22 (01:45:24):
And again this isn't a complaining things.

Speaker 17 (01:45:26):
It's when we now have a true professional model, except
it's a.

Speaker 22 (01:45:33):
Free agency every year.

Speaker 17 (01:45:35):
And so when we have all these and I'd say
eighty eighty percent of the teams are structured this way
now in college basketball, certainly in the power for and
when you have this year, you know you're gonna need
games against other opponents to kind of, you know, find
your way and learn your team.

Speaker 22 (01:45:51):
And it's the.

Speaker 17 (01:45:52):
Coaches, certainly, it's also the players finding their way and
learning new systems and learning each other.

Speaker 22 (01:45:57):
That's why I've been beating the drum for a preseason model.
Let's play four or.

Speaker 17 (01:46:02):
Five games, and maybe it doesn't look like it looks
not just for us, for everybody to this extent.

Speaker 22 (01:46:09):
Early in November, all that said, MO, like, yeah, we're learning.

Speaker 17 (01:46:13):
I think there's been some stretches that I'm proud of
right like, you can see some sustained success and some
stretches and games in the aspects of the games that
we value, whether it's some things in our defense, whether
it's some things in our transition game, whether it's some
offensive execution. And then there's some stretches where, quite frankly,
that stuff's not there. We're working through that so we

(01:46:36):
can get more consistent. As we get more consistent, we're
going to become a better and better basketball team as
long as the work ethic and mindset within our locker
room stays the same.

Speaker 22 (01:46:44):
And it's to this point, it's been good.

Speaker 3 (01:46:46):
I asked you about this on Sunday before the game.
Dada A Thomas, a guy that you can lean on.
You've got all these new guys you're trying to figure
out who can do what. I think people forget Number one,
how good data was, especially down the stretch last year.

Speaker 18 (01:47:00):
How awesome is it to have a guy like that.

Speaker 3 (01:47:02):
That you can lean on. You look at a game
like Friday. This is a high end college basketball game.
You want this to be a game in the second half.
How nice is it to be able to lead on
a guy like him? On both ends of the floor.

Speaker 17 (01:47:13):
Yeah, and I appreciate you recognizing how well he played
at the end of last year, because you know, people
tend to forget that he missed, you know, five six
weeks to start the year last year, not just preseason,
he missed games, and he was coming off of a
foot injury. He had a setback, had to get shut
down completely. It took him a while, not just to

(01:47:35):
find his rhythm, but defined his confidence in his way
within our team. I thought he finished the year like
the data that we've always known, and then I thought
it went into the offseason where he had a terrific offseason.
He's had a great preseason. He's confident, he's matured, He's
really evolved Mow into a leader in a lot of
ways in our program. And he gets what putting that

(01:47:57):
jersey on is all about, Like he understands hands it
and then that matters for the rest of our guys.
So I'm excited about his start, not surprised, And I
think I don't think it's a fleeting thing. I think
it's something that he's going to be able to sustain
throughout the year.

Speaker 3 (01:48:12):
I mentioned this to you in the post game on Sunday,
Kishan Tillery gave you a spark, and it's one game,
It's November. He has a lot of growing to do.
But it felt to me like, maybe you could see
the light bulb come on just a little bit. Would
that be a fair way of putting it.

Speaker 17 (01:48:28):
I think if I was in your shoes, it's a
fair way to put it, because you hadn't got to
see him all through the summer and the fall. But
if you take the games that he's played, I understand
that comment. I think from my perspective, I've seen the
light bulb come home all the time, and I see
it go off sometimes like any freshman point guard, right,
And I think all of those things, whether they're really

(01:48:52):
good moments, and he had some really good moments when.

Speaker 22 (01:48:54):
We had an exhibition.

Speaker 17 (01:48:54):
He gets a Michigan he thought he had some great
moments the other night, or some of these negative moments
that could be frustrating for a fan, a teammate or
the head coach, right, those are actually really good for
his growth. We need we need him to be ready
to play in Big twelve games. He's capable of being
an impact player as a freshman.

Speaker 22 (01:49:14):
In the Big twelve. I believe he will be.

Speaker 17 (01:49:17):
So these ups and downs, even though they may be
frustrating times for all of us and him included, they're
very important.

Speaker 22 (01:49:23):
All that said, he's a really good player.

Speaker 17 (01:49:26):
He fits here, he fits Cincinnati, and he's going to
have an important role this year.

Speaker 3 (01:49:32):
Louisvill's a little bit different than the last time you
played him, you know, and I watch him against Kentucky,
they scored ninety six. That's their lowest point total this season.
Michale Brown's a load. We saw Ryan Conwell up close
last year. Where do you even start with that team?

Speaker 17 (01:49:47):
Yeah, somebody said that to me, he said, you know,
Louisville scored one hundred and three out of the last
four games they played.

Speaker 22 (01:49:52):
I said, yeah, and the one time they didn't, they
scored ninety six.

Speaker 12 (01:49:55):
You know.

Speaker 17 (01:49:56):
No, it's uh, there's a reason why people are picking
them to win the National championship.

Speaker 22 (01:50:03):
And people were saying that before they even played the game.

Speaker 17 (01:50:06):
And so you know, when you're playing a team that
has that type of expectation, there's reasons for it. They're
they're terrifically dynamic offensively. Uh, you know, whether it's in
their transition game, whether it's in their half court execution. Uh,
it seems like they have four guys that would be

(01:50:26):
the primary and some of them already have been the
number one offensive weapon on any team they play on
in college.

Speaker 22 (01:50:33):
But there's four of them that are all guards on
their team.

Speaker 17 (01:50:37):
And you know, I say that with to compliment the
job they've done putting that group together. So yeah, that's
that's what happens when you play against teams that you know,
or the six ranked team in the country, they present challenges.
But what a great opportunity for us. I like our
guys too. I like some of the things we can
do too, and I'm excited for the opportunity for the

(01:50:58):
ball to go up against you know, one of the
best teams in college basketball right now.

Speaker 3 (01:51:01):
All right, As a longtime UC fan, this is the
game that I wish we had every single year.

Speaker 2 (01:51:07):
So take me how a game like this comes together.
You know, we're just looking.

Speaker 17 (01:51:13):
For really quality games in our non conference that number
one prepares for the Big twelve. Number two give us
the right opportunity to build a resume for the selection day,
and then you know three are exciting.

Speaker 22 (01:51:30):
And draw interest.

Speaker 17 (01:51:32):
And you know, this game came about because it was
willingness on both sides, which was the first step, and
then there was a way to make it happen. And
so again, I love games like this for all those reasons.
I certainly love that our fans get to see this
rivalry again, and I'm excited to experience it for the
first time since I've been at Cincinnati. But I am

(01:51:54):
excited that Louisville and Cincinnati are playing basketball again.

Speaker 3 (01:51:57):
All Right, one more, Pat Kelsey. You talked about him,
a guy that you known for a very long time,
a guy you've coached against. He's obviously coming home. Walked
me through your relationship with Pat Kelsey and what you
like about watching his teams play.

Speaker 17 (01:52:09):
Yeah, Patt and I've known each other since I was
a a high school high school player, and they were
recruiting me a little bit at Wake Forest when he
was a young assistant there for Skip Prosser. And you know,
I know this is like sacrilegious to say anything good
about Xavier when you're the Cincinnati coach, but Skip Prosser,
who is Pat's mentor, was always so unbelievably kind to me.

(01:52:30):
And when I came to Cincinnati, and you know, like
that That's the one thing I've always said is don't
I don't care about I care a lot about the
Crosstown shootout, but you can't ever say a bad word
to me about Skip Prosser.

Speaker 22 (01:52:41):
So because of Skip.

Speaker 17 (01:52:43):
That's how Pat and I got to know each other
back when I was a youngster. We've been in this
profession for a long time. We've had a friendship for
a very long time. Our families know each other. I mean,
you know, his family here in Cincinnati has been very
kind and warm to me. I think the world of them.
You know, he knows my family. So there's a ton
of history there. Now, when the ball goes up, I

(01:53:04):
don't think any of that crap's gonna matter on either end.
But if people want to know yet, I think a
lot of pack. He'll see his family and we've known
each other for gosh well over twenty years.

Speaker 2 (01:53:15):
All right, there you go, Wes Miller. I take that
interview at UC today. I took my tape recorder down
and talked to Wes. Tickets are available now ticketmaster dot
com for Friday Night U se versus Louisville at the
Heritage Bank Center. Early tip off so six point thirty
still kind of make a Friday night out of it,
especially if the good guys win. I am off tomorrow.

(01:53:36):
Chad Brenda will fill in on this show from three
to six. Bengals PEP Rally bumps me out of the
way Friday afternoon, so we have a Tony and Molf
football show Monday. We got to go. Bengals game Plan
is next a good show on after this one. Thanks
to Tarren Bland for producing. Thanks to you for listening.
Have a great night. This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
