Speaker 1 (00:00):
Zes coverage begins Sunday morning at nine on ESPN fifteen thirty,
the official home of the Bank.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
I'll be there for that. Yes, I'll be there at
the Holy Broil starting at nine am Sunday morning. Wow,
I can't wait. What's up, my leggers. That's me. This
is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank you for listening. My thanks
to Chad Brendle for pinch hitting yesterday. Much appreciated. It

(00:30):
is awesome to be back. We have a lot of
ground to cover. Speaking of Chad Brendle, he joins us
later on this hour. Because it's Thursday, you see, is
a big game tomorrow, a big opportunity, a big opportunity
to start building. The NCAA tournament resume with a neutral
site game against the Dayton Flyers, which I can't wait

(00:51):
for because I have embraced these two teams playing. You
know when they announced this last year. UC and UD
played a game last season at the Arena Downtown, and
I initially did like it. And the reason is I
love care for and cheer for both programs. I lean bearcat,
which is a topic and I don't think we need
to spend any time on but it's like watching your

(01:15):
parents fight. And then Dayton beat UC last year, and
it was like watching the parent you don't like as
much win. That's that's not a fair comparison. But I
enjoyed it. I enjoyed seeing I enjoyed it seeing those
two teams on the floor with each other. I'll enjoy
it tomorrow night. We'll talk about it in great detail
with our guy Chad coming up in just under forty minutes.

(01:35):
I cannot wait. Show preview video has been posted to
x at Moeger thanks to Emery Federal Credit Union, your
credit union with heart since nineteen thirty nine. You know,
it has now been fourteen months to the day since
I became a member of Emery Federal Credit Union. I've
made a lot of bad decisions in my life, but

(01:57):
one of the good ones was becoming a member of
Federal Credit Union Emery FCU dot org. All eyes on tonight.
So you know, for the last couple of weeks, we've
had some fun talking about the Bengals rather remote playoff chances,
and you know, we've we've had fun looking at all

(02:20):
the different models out there. Some suggest the Bengals have
a two percent chance of making the playoffs. Some would
have it at four, some would have it at six.
We've talked about all the different things that have to
happen in order for the Bengals to make the postseason, Obviously,
the most important of which is they got to win
all their games. Obviously, if the Chargers win tonight, the

(02:43):
Bengals making the postseason is still not a likelihood, but
it becomes at least a little bit more plausible. Obviously,
a thousand things need to happen. I would imagine that
by now we've memorized all of them. But if LA
wins tonight, then I think we've reached quote, well you

(03:06):
know status. I've seen some suggest that their odds will
move to like twenty percent or twenty five percent right now.
If you look at most sports books that will take
this bet, and it's interesting, there are books that don't
take this action, and there are books who take this
action but don't have the Bengals listed. And there are

(03:30):
books that do have the Bengals listed as plus seven
hundred to make the postseason. By the way, one of
them that I'm not paid to mention, has Cincinnati with
better odds than both Miami and Indianapolis. Teams. The Bengals
need to lose at least a game. So if LA
wins tonight, not then it's likely because there are still

(03:53):
a lot of things that have to happen. But I
kind of feel like we talk about their chain, it
is just a little bit differently. If they lose tonight mathematically,
if Denver wins mathematically, the Bengals are still alive. I
feel like at that point though, we'd all feel not
maybe not comfortable, but we would call it right. It'd

(04:15):
be like election night. You know, enough precincts are in
to make a projection. I think if the Broncos win tonight,
that's what we're going to do. If the Chargers win,
If you don't know this, and chances are you do,
but I'll just cover my bases here. If the Chargers win,
then what has to happen is the Bengals have to
win their final three games. We need two more Broncos losses,
including obviously head to head against the Bengals next week

(04:38):
next Saturday, and we'll need at least a loss each
by the Colts and Dolphins. If the Broncos win, well,
then they need the Chargers to lose their next two
games against the Patriots and Raiders, and they need the
Colts and Dolphins to still lose a game, and the
Bengals must win out And then obviously there's concerns about

(05:03):
what those later season games will mean for the team
that Denver plays Week eighteen, which is obviously Kansas City,
and maybe what the game means Week eighteen for the
Pittsburgh Steelers. But tonight does kind of kick it in
a gear just a little bit, just a little bit.
I'm not telling you it's likely, it's not. I'm not

(05:23):
telling you to go, you know, bet on it if
LA wins tonight. But that's the outcome we're rooting for,
because then I think you could at least see a path.
That path must include three consecutive Bengals victories. It also
must include a win over the Denver Broncos. And you know,
this game tonight was not supposed to be played tonight.

(05:43):
This was supposed to be Bengals Browns this evening. The
NFL is now flexing Thursday games out, something they had
the option to do last year, something they had the
option to do this year, something that they have to
revisit this offseason. For what it's worth, I hate this
piece in The Athletic, and it's written from a Denver perspective.

(06:03):
The game tonight is in Los Angeles, but it's about
Broncos fans who had made plans to go watch their
team play in LA this weekend, who are now holding
tickets they can't use because they can't get there for
the game tonight. And I know folks who were going
to the game in Cincinnati tonight who now can't make
it on Sunday. Look, man, flex scheduling is a reality

(06:25):
of a sports league where television is most important. We
all understand that. We understand it. In college football, you
gotta wait until sometimes less than a week before your
team plays, before you know what time they're gonna play,
and it's a pain in the neck. But TV dictates
that and the money that TV networks are paying means uh,
the leagues are gonna serve them before they serve ticket holders.

(06:48):
But moving games by a few days sucks. Also from
a Bengals perspective, they're gonna play Sunday against Cleveland. Denver
plays tonight, the Bengals next game will be against the Broncos.
It'll be a short week for Cincinnati now, not as
short as Sunday to Thursday, but still a short week.

(07:09):
Denver is gonna be coming off a Thursday game. Bengals
and Broncos will play next Saturday, and so Denver's gonna
have a significant rest advantage. That game against Denver might
not mean anything. That game against Denver might mean the world,
but it's something at least worth mentioning. Jay Morrison's gonna
join us at four twenty. Get the latest on Bengals injuries.
Joe Burrow limited yesterday. He talked yesterday afternoon about his

(07:33):
sideline demeanor in the game last week against the Tennessee Titans.
He used the word standard. Zach Taylor used the word standard.
That's the word we used on Tuesday. Fine that show
if you missed it on the iHeartRadio app thanks to
long Next Sports Grill. Truly a great basketball game last night.
You know, one of the topics in in sports right now,

(07:56):
and it's not something that's been hit on here because
we don't have a team, and interest in the NBA
in Cincinnati maybe compared to other cities is not quite
as high. Although I gotta tell you, for a stretch
I would have said, I don't know many men out
of the age of thirty who aren't at least casual
NBA fans. But NBA ratings are down, and there's a
huge discussion about why. And there's a lot of people

(08:17):
who think there are too many three point shots being
taken to the NBA, and I think there's actually some
validity to that argument. But my take is this college
basketball this year has been so good, so entertaining. There
have been so many good non conference matchups. On a
given night, I find myself gravitating more toward the college game,

(08:39):
when in in years past I've kind of consumed both,
maybe not equally, always tilting a little bit more toward
college College basketball has just frankly been better this season.
There's been a great game almost every single night, and
there was a great one last night in Hartford and
a heartbreaker for the Xavier Musketeers. They fall in oteen
ninety four to eighty nine. UKN just had too many

(09:02):
guys in overtime. It was a great game for thirty
nine and a half minutes. Then there were two shaky
calls that each team benefited from down the stretch. The
officiating got weird. Then there were like it felt like
twenty nine and a half minutes worth of replay reviews,
which just grinds the entire game to a halt. Unfortunately
for Xavier, they fall by four points. That is now

(09:25):
four losses before Christmas. They open up, biggies play with
a loss. I do think there's something if you're trying
to look ahead, where you could take that performance in
that effort last night and maybe feel a little bit
better about how they're going to play moving forward. You
certainly can grasp onto the way that Dante Maddicks shot
the ball last night. You could grab onto how the

(09:46):
Musketeers as a team shot the ball from outside last
night thirteen of twenty four. The Dante Maddix with times
has kind of been a forgotten guy last this year,
played thirty five minutes, went five for nine from three
to twenty two points. That's the guy we're talking talking about.
If they win the game, they shot it well, they
didn't turn it over as much, and yet kind of

(10:07):
the same result. They continue to play shorthanded. That's not
going to change anytime soon. Their bigs frankly aren't good
enough to play in games like that, and Connecticut made
him pay with fourteen offensive rebounds. The rebounding margin was
actually not as lopsided as I thought it was going
to be watching the game in real time. Nonetheless, it

(10:30):
is a tough five point loss for Xavier, and it
gets no easier with Marquette coming to town on Saturday.
Here's Sean Miller after last night's game.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
Obviously, I thought that was in a great college game,
you know, for both teams and obviously the fans. A
lot of scoring, close, a lot of lee changes. I
think there was maybe twenty eleven twenty two lead changes
in the game. You know, there aren't a lot of
college basketball games where it's played like that. Very proud

(11:01):
of our team. You know, we got the news about
Zach Fremantle middle of you know, mid morning on Monday,
ten to eleven o'clock. You know, we had to basically
move our practice time, had two quick days in a
shoot around to try to do some different things. Get
our guys ready.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
You know a lot of teams when.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
They get news that you're going to be without your
leading scorer, I mean, it can really strip you of
your of your hope and your confidence. In particular, we're
coming off with tough loss, basically a game that we
just played. We played on Saturday against Cincinnati, So from
my side of the ledger, very proud of our players.
We had a player tonight, Dante Maddox, really find himself.

(11:45):
We knew he was capable, but he had a great game.
And I think once you kind of have a game
like that, especially against a team like Yukon, it fills
you with confidence moving forward. So I look at it
as a positive step for us. Uh, you know, obviously
there are no moral victories at this level. You know,
you had and we had opportunity to potentially win the game.

(12:07):
We didn't, and then you know, look, you cone's good.
They wore us down. Their size and their rebounding and
just their their execution on offense eventually overwhelmed us. It
just it took a long time for us to break,
but just couldn't get a rebound or a stop down
the stretch.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Sean Miller last night after the game, and I appreciate
the approach he has taken. Look, you can't help but
acknowledge the tangible results or the tangible impact of the
Zach Fremantle injury, but also the emotional one to think
about that there's a piece in he inquired today by
Shelby Dharmer that kind of talks about this. They lose
a really tough game on Saturday, an emotional game, a

(12:50):
rivalry game, a game that the Musketeers, I'll put it gently,
were complicit in their own demise. They find out they
don't have Zach Fremantle, they have to travel to Connecticut
and play a team that right now is better than
the one that took the floor in Maui and lost
three consecutive games. I think from a coaching perspective, it
makes sense knowing what's coming, knowing what your team has

(13:11):
dealt with over it the last couple of weeks to
kind of put a positive spin on things. They just
don't have enough guys right now, and that's a function
of not not just being without Zach Fremantle, but not
having Trey Green, not having a Lasina Treyorri, who on
our show Sean went out of his way to talk
about how much, how big of a part of the
team he was going to be this season. It feels

(13:32):
like six days before Christmas, with one game to go
before the holiday, that the season is already teetering on
the brink. That's not something that most of us would
have thought was going to be the case. Six seven
weeks ago, twenty minutes after three o'clock. Uh five within
three seven four nine, fifteen thirty is our phone number
eight six six seven zero two three seven seven six

(13:52):
Jay Morrison on the Bengals in just about an hour.
Robert Wintrob in the five o'clock hour as well. I'm
gonna head off two things before they start next on
ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station, and by our friends
at Orthos since the Orthopedic Sports Medicine. But at Orthosinci
dot com, you never ever ever need an appointment. Orthosincy

(14:15):
dot com. Lee Sterling's gonna make us some money on
college and pro football. Massive Football Weekend starts tonight. Go Chargers,
by the way, that games tonight on Fox Sports thirteen sixty.
So there you go. It is December nineteenth. I am
unreasonably holding out hope that between now and let's say

(14:35):
Christmas Eve, that the Reds do something of significance. And
let's be honest, when it comes to addressing their offense,
pretty much any acquisition would be something of significance. I
bring this up because there are two moves the Reds
have made over the last twelve years that have stood
out to me because they occurred right before Christmas, when
they traded for yes Elpwig and Mac camp and Kyle

(14:57):
Farmer and Alex wood. I remember, I it was a
Christmas with my grandma in law and I had to
go to the radio station to talk about it. And
I remember when they got Matt Latos. Now we're going
back twelve years, it was like the Saturday before Christmas.
There's still a lot of time left in the off season.
Jeff passing ESPN dot Com today sort of does a

(15:18):
deep dive into all the free agents that are out there.
But all I can do is react to what's happened
to this point. The offseason is not new, it's weeks old. Obviously,
the Reds did acquire Brady Singer. They have done nothing else,
so I could change my tone here, But as of
three twenty eight in the afternoon on Thursday, December nineteenth,

(15:43):
the Reds do not appear to have a roster that
is appreciably better than last season. That may change. It
might change tonight, it could change before pitchers and catchers report,
But right now, it's cool. They got a Hall of
Fame manager love Terry Francona. Have they made their team
better using the mechanisms you use in the off season

(16:05):
to make your team better. I don't know that the
answer is yes. Can I head off two things really quick?
Here's the first one? Well, the budget's just not there,
might be the case. Sorry, not an excuse. Figure out
a way within the confines of your budget to get

(16:26):
it done. You have lost all equity that you might
have had a couple of years ago. You have lost
using any sort of financial constraints as an excuse. You've
got a lot of other people who have invested in
the team that you never ask money from. Ask them
for money. I am not hearing. Well, the budget's not

(16:49):
there because of the TV. Uh uh Sorry man Number one,
You've had time to prepare for this. Number two, figure
it out. If you can't figure it out, get out
of business. Number two. You know my favorite in season trope, right,
We joked about it a lot last year. My favorite
in season trope. As we get closer to the trade

(17:10):
deadline for a team that has guys on the injured list,
is hurt guy coming back could be the best trade
deadline acquisition. I don't know if this piece has been
written yet. I fear it will be. Hurt Guy coming
Back could be the best off season acquisition. Pick your
favorite hurt guy jam Er Candelario, who suffered an injury

(17:34):
they say is no big deal in the Dominican Winter
League this week. Jake Fraley, TJ friedel Cees by the way,
the guys that might come back and perform veteran stay
healthy this year obviously, Matt McClain. I'm heading this off
before it even starts. Hurt Guy coming Back could be
the best off season acquisition. Someone's gonna write the piece,

(17:55):
Someone's gonna take it and run with it. I ain't
buying it. Lee Sterling next Orthosincy Moeger Show, ESPN fifteen thirty.
She said, Kelsey chevrolete. But I don't want to make
our guy wait because it feels like I haven't talked
to him in like a month and a half. Lee Sterles,
Paramount sports dot Com has made us money all season
long pro in college football, and then I started taking

(18:18):
a bunch of Thursdays off, and there was Thanksgiving, and
then Lee wasn't with us last week even though I
was here. But we're both here now, Lee, it is
good to talk to you. How are you.

Speaker 4 (18:29):
I'm great, I'm great. How about any anything exciting going
on with me?

Speaker 5 (18:36):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (18:36):
Coming up the next week or two, we.

Speaker 2 (18:39):
Are anticipating the overnight arrival of a large, fat man
with a beard who's gonna drop off stuff that we
have been talking about in my house for the last
six months.

Speaker 4 (18:49):
Okay, let me give you a little hint until you
get a pint of milk and put it outside in
some really good cookies. I hear he likes oatmeal.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Oatmeal cooks are even jot that down, all right, he
likes oatmeal. Cookie's very good. Okay. We're just hoping our
roof holds up this year for the landings. So, yes,
we are, we are. We are quite excited for his arrival.
This is a massive football weekend, Lee, I'm excited. Let's
begin with I think what most of us would agree
is the best of the four college football playoff matchups

(19:21):
this weekend. Ohio State at home touchdown favorite against Tennessee.

Speaker 4 (19:27):
So something's wrong with this Ohio State team. Talent wise,
skill position off the charts, special wide receiver, running back,
but this offensive line is a mess. I mean they're
down two key starters and we hit seventy seven rushing
yards versus Michigan. And how do teams perform after losing
laying more than nineteen and a half points historically thirty

(19:51):
seven and sixty seven against the spread. It is psychologically
something that teams a lot of times just can't over
will come. Some people say the weather gonna help out
Ohio State, but these kids from Tennessee, they're in eastern
Tennessee and it gets cold there. I don't think that's
gonna be a factor here. Will Howard, I don't know
if he can elevate his play and love this kid

(20:13):
Dylan Sampson almost fifteen hundred yards and you can count
on over thirty thousand Tennessee fans will find their way
in the stadium. Ran team favorite Tennessee straight up twenty six,
twenty four.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
See you Ryan, do not want to be Ryan Day
late on Saturday night if you end up being uh prop?

Speaker 4 (20:35):
Who do you think if he gets tired? Mike Rabel
see the guy.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
I think that's the guy that a lot of Ohio
State fans want. I don't know if they would default
to him. Well, what the interesting is that the timing
of it right, because we're late in this right, the
portal has been open now for a while. We're late
in the coaching cycle. But yeah, looked as much as
I roll my eyes at the fans when they lost
to Michigan, who said, well, he has to win a
national title to save his job, I think it's going

(21:00):
to be a really, really, really difficult scenario for him
if they lose this game on Saturday.

Speaker 4 (21:04):
All right, I remember this also there is a second portal.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
Date, Yes, no doubt, yes, yeah, definitely definitely all right,
Battle of the Hoosier State featuring the Hoosiers in South
Bend against Notre Dame, the Irish six point favorite. Who
do we like?

Speaker 4 (21:19):
Love Kurt Signetti, fuck his offensive face? Two defenses this
year Michigan only had two hundred and forty six total
yards and only not this not four point four yards
per carry, four point four yards per play, and against
Ohio State only one hundred and fifty three total yards.
And how lucky is Indiana gotten? Their defense has lost

(21:39):
one total start all season, One player missed one game
on defense. Here mcriley Leonard just not going to turn
the ball over and hand it to Indiana. I like
Notre Dame. I think they pull away thirty to sixteen,
all right.

Speaker 2 (21:52):
Least early on Paramount sports dot Com. The Bengals will
take the field in the Battle of Ohio Part two
on Sunday Harbor postseason hopes. Now, they could be boosted
tonight based on what happens between the Chargers and Broncos,
but nonetheless a meaningful game for Cincinnati, their big favorites
at home. We have seen them lose in that scenario

(22:13):
this year is going to happen against Dorian Thompson Robinson
and the Browns.

Speaker 4 (22:17):
So Cincinnati's pass offense versus Cleveland's pass defense is going
to be the story of this game. The Browns are
number thirteen in passyards allowed and number two and fewest
completions allowed. That sounds pretty good, but they are number
thirty two in yards per completion allowed, almost twelve yards
per And as for Cleveland's own offense, they run the

(22:40):
most plays, believe it or not, in the league, but
number thirty eight yards per play. No quarterback is going
to have success on this team. Bengals thirty to seventeen.

Speaker 2 (22:50):
Wow, very good, Lee Sterlingparamount sports dot Com we like
to hear at I let's talk about your free game
of the week.

Speaker 4 (22:57):
Yeah, free game of the week is going to be
pinned State and SMU. First five callers called eight hundred
four hundred nine seven for one, They're gonna get it
for free. And my way of saying thank you for
listening to segment each and every week and also checking
out my website from time to time, Paramount sports dot com.
I'm gonna get away my top play tonight and also tommorrow,

(23:19):
so normally twenty seven dollars. If you go to Paramount
sports dot com, use the code word free, absolutely free.
My way of saying thank you. Hopefully I can win
for you, for win for you. Hopefully you join me
down the road for the rest of the football season
on a twenty and six run right now in December.
Check it out Paramount sports dot com or call eight

(23:41):
hundred four hundred nine to seven for one.

Speaker 2 (23:43):
All right, good stuff. I'll let you know if the
large fat man with a beard shows up.

Speaker 4 (23:47):
Okay, okay, just thankes.

Speaker 5 (23:49):
Sure.

Speaker 4 (23:49):
I like to said double, he's very hungry. Double the
amount of normal cookies.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
All right, I jotted it down. I'm gonna call me
the break good stuff. Thank you all right at Lee
Sterling Paramount sports dot com. Couple of the things really quick.
FC Cincinnati's twenty twenty five schedule was released today. The
Orange and Blue will play their first regular season MLS
game against the New York Red Bulls, defending Eastern Conference champions. Huh,

(24:15):
defending Eastern Conference champion New York Red Bulls. That game
is going to be at the Soccer Venue on the
West side of Cincinnati, West end of Cincinnati, I should say, Saturday,
February the twenty second. They will host the Columbus Cruz
Saturday July twelfth. What else do we have? I have
not yet seen a Bengals injury report, but will peruz
big game tonight, Chargers Broncos, Fox Sports thirteen to sixty.

(24:38):
West Miller showed tonight at eight Columbus Bluejackets play hockey
against the New Jersey Devils. Chad Brendle next Ortho Cinc.
Moeger Show, ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station Kevin Hardy
haven't been to DL in like nine years, but the
Reds did just claim on off way were from the Rangers.

(25:01):
Roonzie Contreras, who is a pitcher who last year with
the Angels appeared in thirty seven games with an ERA
of four three three Rawonsie. I don't know that the
Reds in their illustrious history, I've ever had a guy
named Rowanzi, so he's a first assuming he makes the club.

(25:21):
What are we doing now? Chad Brendle's with his Bearcat
journal dot com.

Speaker 5 (25:24):
Hi Chad, I'm a taren and I had a bad
day yesterday.

Speaker 6 (25:29):
Why well, you one, you said that Skinny was supposed
to be on A four twenty when you texted me,
and then he wasn't supposed to be until five twenty.

Speaker 5 (25:40):
But we made it work.

Speaker 6 (25:41):
But worst of all, yeah, we found out that Island
Friday has closed yesterday for good.

Speaker 2 (25:46):
I saw this. That's not good. That is a that
is a Clifton University of Cincinnati staple and has been
for the last fourteen to fifteen years.

Speaker 6 (25:56):
Literally, the jerk chicken with rice and peas with gravy,
cabbage and fried plantains was my favorite meal in the city.

Speaker 2 (26:03):
I understand.

Speaker 5 (26:05):
I'm sad.

Speaker 7 (26:06):
I get it.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
I can hear it in your voice. I could hear
it in your voice. I heard a decent amount of
the show. It sounded fine. You guys sounded like you
were in a jovial mood.

Speaker 8 (26:17):
Yeah, we were in a good mood.

Speaker 6 (26:18):
It's just like Burrow talked for like twenty five minutes
and it threw off the clock and just everything felt
was it felt like something was wrong in the universe. Yeah,
and it turns out Island Friday's closed and that's what
was wrong in the universe.

Speaker 5 (26:31):
So you know, that's how it works.

Speaker 2 (26:33):
I understand. I understand it is UC going to be
dating tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (26:39):
I think they've got a good chance.

Speaker 6 (26:40):
I mean, it's certainly going to be a very interesting
matchup kind of just a I don't want to say
contrasts and styles because I don't think the styles are
all that different, but the rosters are very different.

Speaker 5 (26:55):
You know, It's.

Speaker 6 (26:56):
Cincinnati's starting lineup six three six, six, six, seven, six,
eight seven foot like that is much different than you know,
Dayton then likes to play three six foot guards and
Nate Santos and then zed Key. You know, their zed

(27:16):
Key is their center is about the same size as
Dan Scillies. So, uh, just just two different ways to
build a roster. But both teams are are very very good.
You know, I really like what I've seen from this
Dayton team when I've watched them four times, and every
time I watch them, I am impressed with with I mean,

(27:37):
I think you probably felt this way. I talked to
Drew Lester Heidi today for his podcast. He kind of
felt this way. I thought this would be a step
back here for Dayton, but probably better than last year.
Right now, so they're fun.

Speaker 2 (27:50):
Yeah, No, I mean Dayton won the game pretty decisively
last year, and that was with Deron Holmes, and so
when I started to think about this game months ago,
I felt like, this, this is one that you see
should win. And now I'm not entirely sure.

Speaker 5 (28:04):
Well, it wasn't just Holmes, it was it was Kobe Elvis.

Speaker 6 (28:07):
Who I think he shot one hundred and forty seven
pre throws that night and didn't miss one, you know,
and Kobe.

Speaker 5 (28:14):
Brea hit hit four was four or five from three like.

Speaker 6 (28:19):
They just anytime you see even tried to think about
challenging that game, Dayton had a better answer. I think
this one favors you see a little bit more than
it did last year because I think they got caught
trying to figure out what do you do with Deron
Holmes and then Kobe Elvis just torched them on their
defensive rotations. I'm interested to see the Cincinnati stay big.

(28:45):
How much do they go smaller with you know, Gigsel
James and Dane Thomas or Gizzl James and Connor Hickman,
the kind of combat the quickness advantage that Dayton'll probably have.
But one thing will be interesting though. The rims at
that arena have only been used I think four times

(29:06):
in the twentieth century twenty first century. They are very tight.
It didn't matter last year because Dayton didn't touch rim
like that.

Speaker 5 (29:17):
Everything was right in the center.

Speaker 6 (29:20):
It's not a shooter's facility, and Dayton does rely heavily on,
you know, shooting from the perimeter.

Speaker 5 (29:27):
So it'll be.

Speaker 6 (29:29):
Interesting to see if that plays a factor and obviously
play a factor for both teams, and Cincinnati hasn't shot
all that well with late.

Speaker 2 (29:36):
Yeah, I mean in the half court again Xavier, and
we've seen this in other games as well. They I
love lob passes, I love alley ups, and I love dunks.
Your half court offense has to generate something besides those things.

Speaker 6 (29:52):
Yeah, I mean I felt against Xavier and I went
back and watched it to make sure. Like I didn't
have much of a problem with the looks they got.
I thought they ran pretty good stuff and they just
didn't make shots. I feel less confident about it at
an arena where the rims are not you know, super
shoot or friendly. But like last year, I felt at

(30:12):
times the offense stagnated and you know, the ball stuck
a little bit too much. I haven't felt that yet
with this team, outside of maybe.

Speaker 5 (30:20):
The Villanova game.

Speaker 6 (30:21):
So there is that hope that if they keep running
good offense that you know, the shots will eventually start
to fall. But they didn't shoot it well against Villanova,
they didn't shoot it well against Xavier. You know, is
it kind of do we see an improvement or do
we start to ask ourselves next week? Is this kind

(30:44):
of who they are going into Big twelve? Plus?

Speaker 2 (30:46):
If this is who they are, how troubling is that
going into Big twelve play.

Speaker 5 (30:52):
Somewhat troubling?

Speaker 6 (30:54):
I think, you know, especially now that Dan is back,
they do have a couple of things that allow you
to overcome it. One, they don't turn the ball over
a lot, They take care.

Speaker 1 (31:03):
Of it well.

Speaker 6 (31:04):
Two, they have the potential to be an outstanding rebounding team.
They haven't fully reached that potentially yet this year because
Dan was hurt for so long and it's just now
coming back. But you know, they play good defense, they rebound,
they don't turn it over. That can, you know, help
overcome some of those offshooting nights. But there's a lot

(31:26):
of good offense in the Big twelve. Like you're gonna
have to score in the seventies with some consistency to
be able to win games in this league. So you
would like to see that get corrected and then not
have to rely on our favorite, you know, the old
bear Cats identity. Look, you can rebound and play good

(31:49):
defense and be tough and still make shots. I promise
it's not in the rule book that those things are
mutually exclusive.

Speaker 2 (31:55):
You're allowed to blend those two things. Chad Brendel Bearcat
Journal dot Com Like ninety seconds here. So since the
transfer portal opened in football and I follow along on
social media, I've I've seen a lot of guys coming
from schools with Elon and I think there was a
Dennis a dental school in Nebraska that they were they

(32:17):
got a visit from a guy, and then there was
a teachers college in Rhode Island. I think they had
a quarterback who was going to come to town. And
then yet yesterday or maybe it was two days ago.
I look in the athletic and they're thrilled about the
transfers that you see has gotten in the portal. Are
they better? Are they getting better in the portal or
they just recruiting a bunch of guys who shouldn't be
playing in the Big twelve.

Speaker 6 (32:38):
I think they're getting better in the portal. I mean
we have seen over the past couple of years. As
the transfer portal is open, you can get a lot
of help from the lower levels. I mean, I don't
think you want to count on many of those guys
coming in and being like the top of the roster
type guys, but you can find a lot of serviceable

(33:00):
pieces and start to continue to build that depth in
the Big twelve via this route. You know, the obvious
differentiator in all this is the NIL, and they don't
have the NIL that a lot of these major SEC
and Big ten teams have, So you have to have

(33:21):
a little bit of a different strategy. And it seems
like right now their strategy is go down a level
and find guys that still fit your size, speed, you know, measurables,
but have also had some time producing at the college level.
I don't know that we've landed anybody yet that we

(33:43):
can look at and say, all right, that guy's going
to come in and be, you know, a star. But
I do think they've landed a lot of guys that
you're comfortable saying, you know, these guys can come in
and be serviceable pieces to continue to elevate the roster.

Speaker 5 (33:58):
Up a level. I just don't know how.

Speaker 6 (34:03):
You compete at the top of the transfer portal market
if you don't have top of the transfer portal market money,
so you have to be a little creative.

Speaker 2 (34:11):
I think that's well put. All right, I have a
great Christmas. Thank you very much.

Speaker 5 (34:17):
You as well.

Speaker 6 (34:17):
Thanks well, you have a great holiday, and tell the
family Merry Christmas.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
Likewise, Chadrendel bearcat Journal dot com covering UC Athletics Cincinnati
versus Dayton. Tomorrow night, Jay Morrison is going to join
us coming up at four to twenty on ESPN.

Speaker 9 (34:32):
Fifteen thirty PN fifteen thirty that is the.

Speaker 2 (34:36):
Name of the radio station. Thank you very much, late
for the hour. My apologies because I don't know how
to read a clock. This is ESPN fifteen thirty. It's
the Orto sincim Mo Leger Show. Thank you for listening today. Hopefully,
hopefully you're having an awesome Thursday. I think there's a
better than average chance that we have a lot of
folks listening to us who are winding down for the year,

(34:58):
or at least for Christmas. We'll see, we'll see Bengals
pep rally on in our place tomorrow. Jay Morrison is
going to join us at four twenty. Our guy are
are we calling him? Our official UDI correspondent Drew wester
Heidi is going to join us at four thirty five
to talk about tomorrow night's game Cincinnati versus Daton and

(35:19):
our guy Dan Clastin's fantasy playoff help. He is going
to join us at four forty five. I spent a
lot of time on Tuesday show talking about Joe Burrow
on the sideline in Nashville and his interactions with Zach Taylor,
which both he and Zach addressed yesterday. And my take

(35:40):
was and is that is a player who has really
high standards. That is someone at the most important position
in all of sports who is among the best and
most accomplished at what he does. He is one of
the absolute best at the most important position in all
of sports. He is heavily invested in there's a lot

(36:04):
on the line for him. He is judged by winning
and losing. He has won a championship at the college level.
He has really high expectations and high standards for himself,
and he's frustrated by others around him either not meeting
that standard or in some cases, perhaps not having the
same standards. I think that's what we saw last Sunday.

(36:28):
Here's my question, what do you think that looks like?
What do you think that sounds like? If we are
doing a year from now what we're doing right now now,
you might go, well, we're not gonna be And maybe
that's the case. Right, Maybe the Bengals actually win a
game in September next season. Maybe instead of starting h
to two or oh to three, they win a game
in the first couple of weeks. Maybe they fix the defense,

(36:51):
Maybe they fix the guard play on the offensive line.
Maybe they have an offense that's even more potent. Maybe
they have guys who can actually get out of the
quarterback on a kids basis on defense. Maybe, and maybe
a year from now we're talking about the Bengals locking
up the division, competing for the number one seed, and
being on the short list of teams that you take

(37:12):
seriously as a championship contender. Maybe, But if not, you
think what we saw on sundays tip of the iceberg.
Uh huh. Now, maybe what we saw on Sunday was
an exception because it played out publicly and what's next

(37:32):
plays out privately. But like to me, on Sunday, that
was Joe reaching a point where, dude, I'm done with this.
I'm done watching guys who can't do what I need
them to do. Do the basics can't line up. If
we are still talking about a team and a group

(37:52):
of teammates and a team and a franchise that can't
live up to Joe's standard, what do you think that
looks like a year from now? Chances are we're not
done watching Joe's show frustration on the sideline. We might
not be done this year. That's what I would wonder.

Speaker 5 (38:09):
Like.

Speaker 2 (38:10):
You might go, Okay, it's Joe at the end of
a frustrating season, a disappointing season. Obviously, they can still
make the postseason. H fine, awesome, I get it. I
understand and can relate to the frustration. No issue with
him expressing it. What do you think that's gonna look like?
What do you think that body language is gonna look like?

(38:31):
What do you think is gonna be said? If this
doesn't get fixed and we're doing the same thing a
year from now? Twelve after four I talked last hour.
The Reds haven't really acquired anybody to help their offense. Look,
they were bad offensively last year. Guess we're bad defensively.
They've done nothing to make the offense better. Now you
are probably wanting to pat me on the head, or

(38:53):
maybe you're wanting to pat me on the head to
tell me, come on though, lots of all season here. Look, man,
if you're a Reds fan, this is something we discussed
last summer. If you're a Reds fan, you are tired
of being told to wait for thirty years. For thirty years,
the Reds have been the may or d at the
restaurant telling you, hey, it's just gonna be another ten

(39:14):
to fifteen minutes, and after like three and a half hours,
you're like, dude, I'm gonna go eat somewhere else, like
that's what they've done for three decades, tell you to wait.
So because of that, you have a lot of us
who anything, anything that even resembles being asked to be
a little bit more patient, is gonna get pushed back.

(39:35):
I'm pushing back against being told to wait, and it
might not be totally fair to nik Kral might not
be totally fair. They may within the next couple of
weeks do one or two things that dramatically makes the
team better. Dramatically makes the team better, improves their offense,
gives them somebody who can hit the ball out of
the ballpark. You know we're gonna do this again this year.

(39:56):
Wonder Okay, the Reds sign Elie Dela Cruz and the
answer is no. I think we should all reconcile ourselves
with the not the likelihood, but the inevitability. Ellie Dela
Cruz is going to play for somebody else in twenty thirty.
Because if I was Ellie Dela Cruz, I'd be looking
at Wan Soto's deal going I want to be a
one billion dollar player, and the best way to do that,

(40:18):
the best way to capitalize on making a billion dollars
or even more is to hit free agency. But one
of the ways that you can I don't know at
least keep a player open to playing for you is
to win while you have him. I think that's the
window we're moving into this year. Ellie is established. He's
not completely where he needs to be. I think we

(40:39):
all understand that, but he's established, He's been an all star.
He is the guy they're building around on top of
all their pitchers. Now the question turns into can they
win while they have him? And we talk a lot
about like going all in, making bold moves, being aggressive.
I'm not sure how much I need them to go
all in as much as I need them to go
in all in, so you're sacrificing your future. I just

(41:04):
I want to see him make the best possible effort
to win while they have him. If you want to,
as best as you can convince somebody to lock into
your organization for the remainder of their prime years. Look,
these guys want to win, they want the October stage
that they want the benefits that come with winning. It's baseball.

(41:25):
One guy can only do so much right and want
to be marketed. Where you're marketed is by being attached
to team success, not finishing in fourth place every year
in the National League Central. So this is I believe
critical talked about this. You know a lot with Joey
Vada wasting him. Don't waste these guys. I have a

(41:46):
hard time sitting back. Well, you know a lot of
offseasons still in front of us. Come on, man. Being
a fan of this franchise has been defined by being
told to wait. Tired of being told to wait? That
maybe isn't Nick Kral's fault. It's where we are as
fan base. Sixteen minutes after four o'clock. Our guy Robert
wintropping the five o'clock hour, who is always awesome. We'll

(42:08):
talk about the UCUD game coming up in just about
twenty minutes, and Jay Morrison on the Bengals next Ortho
cin C E. Moeger Show, ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports.

Speaker 1 (42:19):
Station Cincinnati's espron to you in part by modern office methods.
On the official home of the Bengals, Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (42:31):
It is twenty one minutes after four o'clock. This is
ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm Mowegar, appreciate you listening. Our friend
Jay Morrison joins us on Thursdays. At this time, Jay
is with Bengals Talk dot Com, which is under the
SI Umbrella, and he is on x at by Jay Morrison,
also part of Paul Dayner Junior's podcast The Growler. I'm

(42:54):
a part of that on Tuesdays. Jay is here. Hi Jay,
Hey Moe.

Speaker 5 (42:58):
How are you?

Speaker 2 (42:58):
I'm doing I'm doing well. I have not yet looked
at the Bengals injury report? Should I Should I look
at it?

Speaker 5 (43:04):
Well?

Speaker 2 (43:04):
I WinCE? Should I feel nauseous? What am I going
to do when I see the report?

Speaker 5 (43:10):
Shrug?

Speaker 8 (43:11):
I guess would be the way you would you would
look at that now? Now, he did not practice today.
He's been you know, they've been taking him slow with
rest days since he came back from the quad injury before.
He is listed this week with rest slash knee. But
it still looks like he's going to be able to go.
They're just they're just bringing him along slow and cautiously.

(43:33):
Joe Burrow limited again, but again nothing to worry about.

Speaker 5 (43:35):
There.

Speaker 8 (43:36):
There's there's Alex Kappa had another limited day, so it
looks like he's coming through concussion protocol, right. I don't
think there's anything to be too concerned about on the
injury re.

Speaker 2 (43:43):
Fun all right, very good. Has Sam Hubbard played his
last down as a Bengal?

Speaker 5 (43:51):
I'm gonna say no.

Speaker 8 (43:53):
I mean, it's a very real possibility because he's due
nine million dollars next year. I will say that he's
played his last down as a Bengal on his current contract.
But I can I can really see them renegotiating and
keeping him. Hear him taking a pay cut the way
Joe Mixon did a couple of years ago. I just
think he means too much to this franchise for it

(44:15):
to end that way. He can still have a valuable
role in a limited capacity and still mean something for
this defense, means something for this locker room. And I
don't think he's a guy that would balk at taking
a pay cut to stick around and taking one more
run at trying to win a ring.

Speaker 2 (44:31):
Will Alex Kappa and Cordelle Volson be the team starting
guards next season?

Speaker 8 (44:38):
Who I would say no on that. I don't know
if either one will be honestly that and we've talked
about this on the pod. That's that's the number one
mission is to fix that offensive line, and I think
they have to pick a multi problem approach to it,
that you got to sign a guy maybe two in
free agency, and you got to draft a couple two

(44:59):
and and see what you can do to beef up
the interior of that line. Because you feel really good
about a Marius Ebbs. I still Ted Carris hasn't been great,
but they did extend him. He'll be here next year
regardless he's he's good enough. Let's say if you put
pieces around him, or he's not going to stick out.
But yeah, fixing that guard spot is what that's the
number one priority.

Speaker 2 (45:20):
Has the defense turned not the corner but a corner
or are they just playing really bad quarterbacks.

Speaker 5 (45:30):
I would say a little of both.

Speaker 8 (45:32):
I mean we're talking about young guys and and Josh
Newton and Cam Taylor Britt Cam. Let's not forget he
is still young. He's played well in the past, he
just had that little bit of slump. I think he
has definitely turned the corner. But you can't argue with
what they I mean, they've played Cooper Rush Will Levis

(45:52):
and you look at what happened after will Levis went out.
I mean, Mason Rudolph trying of lit him up, but
then again they had a three touchdown, a three score lead,
and they're in pre event kind of letting him throw underneath.

Speaker 10 (46:03):
We'll see this week.

Speaker 8 (46:04):
I mean, I'm just stunned by the Browns going to DTR.
I just don't understand it. And if he lights him up,
then you've got some real concerns. It is going to
be a problem because he's just struggled his entire career.
They're fed up with Jameis Winston's interceptions, but DTR has
one career interception, their one career touchdown, seven interceptions, and

(46:25):
he looks horrible in that game against the Beings back
in Week seven. So I'm just it almost feels like
a veiled tank, like they are putting him in there
just to try to get the best draft spot possible.

Speaker 2 (46:36):
Are all the players getting together tonight to watch the
Charges and Broncos?

Speaker 5 (46:42):
I imagine some are.

Speaker 8 (46:43):
Jamar said he would watch it, just said he would
watch it half and then it'll be his bedtime. I
would imagine some of the position groups are going to
get together and watch it. It's still if it had
more of a definitive meaning, I think you'd maybe see
more of that, but it's still gonna be a long
shot either way, and it's gonna be a real bumber
if the Broncos do end up winning that because you

(47:05):
just don't feel good about the Chargers losing their final
two games. So yeah, I don't know they nobody said
they were doing that, but typically those guys will do that.
The line has Thursday night dinners, I'm sure they'll have
the TV on and be watching the game, and yeah,
there'll be some of that going on.

Speaker 2 (47:22):
Should I lay four and a half points with the
fighting Ohio University bob Kats against Jacksonville State in the
Camping World Bowl, Well, I'm sorry the cure ball. If
they're playing Camping World Stadium.

Speaker 8 (47:34):
Yeah, yeah, no way, I would not lay those points.
I'm very I'm hopeful that they'll win, but those Bowl
games scare me. You have a coach that's never been
a head coach before, they kind of it was such
a monumental thing winning their first MAX championships since nineteen
sixty eight. I think there's bound to be a letdown.
They're playing Jacksonville State.

Speaker 7 (47:52):
Who's right up?

Speaker 5 (47:52):
Down or right? I guess up.

Speaker 8 (47:54):
The road from orlandis so maybe they're gonna have a
good crowd there. I wouldn't play the point, all.

Speaker 2 (47:57):
Right, Well then you made them my mind for me.
Have a great Christmas. Jay, thanks so much.

Speaker 5 (48:03):
All right, thanks Bo.

Speaker 2 (48:04):
That's our guy, Jay Morrison, Bengals Talk dot Com. It
is at twenty seven minutes after four. Our numbers are
five point three seven four nine, fifteen thirty. We do
have a large swath of time later on that we
could just turn over to our vast audience of sports
fans and experts across the Try State college basketball. Tomorrow,

(48:24):
we're getting two ranked teams downtown. Our guy, Drew Westerraheidy,
the official correspondent, the official ud correspondent of our show,
joins us next on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 1 (48:37):
You've been listening to Football in Thenetti on the official
home of the Bengals Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 9 (48:45):
Cincinnati's ESPN Fixtball Follies or something.

Speaker 2 (48:48):
Tomorrow, don't they rename the show on Fridays?

Speaker 11 (48:51):
Friday?

Speaker 2 (48:52):
Yeah, Friday Football? What is it?

Speaker 11 (48:55):
Leave first Frenzy?

Speaker 2 (48:58):
Friday Football Frenzy. Tomorrow, it is twenty six away from
five o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen thirty on Moeger thank
you for listening. A few weeks ago, the University of
Dayton Flyers were in Maui to play in the Maui Invitational,
a tournament where they blew a big lead against North Carolina,

(49:20):
blew a big lead against Iowa State, and then crushed Yukon,
and I think most objective observers would say the Flyers
will end up being the greatest seventh place team in
the history of that event. Since then, they have won
games against Marquette, survived on Tuesday night against unl v
and Holm, and now the nationally ranked Flyers take on

(49:41):
the nationally ranked UC Bearcats. But anyway, when they were
in Maui, we found out that our friend Drew wester Heidi,
who works here at the radio station, who's a huge
UD basketball fan, he was in Maui, and I thought
it'd be kind of fun to get him on the
air and talk to him while he was in Maui
and see if he could could do that, and then
as a result of that, turn in his expense report.

(50:02):
Since officially he was working, I don't know if he
was able to do that, And we said you could
audition to be our UD guy, like our official UD correspondent.
He did a good job. And so with UC playing
UD tomorrow night, I thought we'd bring Drew back. Hi Drew.
I was a long intro. How's it going?

Speaker 12 (50:22):
It was a tremendous intro. MO going pretty well?

Speaker 2 (50:25):
Good? Are you excited for tomorrow night?

Speaker 12 (50:28):
I am extremely excited for tomorrow night. It should be
a great basketball game between two teams who come in
surviving a couple of games. You see surviving a shot
from Xavier and Dayton surviving a shot from UNLV on Tuesday.
It should be a very very intriguing matchup.

Speaker 2 (50:45):
Early in the game against Marquette, I thought Dayton was
going to get blown out. They come back from down
twelve early to win it. What was most impressive about
that performance?

Speaker 12 (50:55):
I think the most impressive thing is that they didn't
turn the ball over in the second half at all.
They got down thirteen right at the beginning, and then
they immediately got it back to seven. Shaka Smart had
his hands calling for a time out before a dunk
was even finished, got the crowd back into the game,
and then you know, just kind of little by little,
it's kind of what North Carolina did to Dayton and

(51:16):
Maui where they got back into it early in the
second half, and then they just kind of kept at it,
kept at it, kept at it, and then the final
two minutes completely belonged to the Flyers.

Speaker 2 (51:27):
Why was the game against you on UNLV not as
easy for the Flyers as we might have thought it
was going to be.

Speaker 12 (51:35):
Well, I think there's a lot of factors in that.
An emotional win on Saturday, a quick turnaround to Tuesday,
when you have another top twenty five matchup on your
schedule against an in state rival on Friday. You know,
college kid very easy to look past. And to be
quite honest with you, I really didn't think Dayton played

(51:58):
all that horribly and they just found a way to win.
And those games like that, you're going to come across
those in a college basketball season where you're playing a
team that you're better than, but things just like kind
of aren't going your way and you just got to
find a way to grind those kinds of games out.
And it really spoke to how connected this Dayton team
is that at the fact that they were able to
grind that game out.

Speaker 2 (52:19):
You have watched the Bearcats I'm sure where does UD
have an advantage over Cincinnati.

Speaker 12 (52:25):
I think Dayton's speed. You know, Cincinnati definitely has the
size advantage, but if Dayton can kind of play their
style and force west Miller to bring some of that
size off the floor, I think that can play into
Dayton's hands. I think Mitchell is probably going to get
the assignment on Nate Santos. I think that will probably
be the matchup to watch, because when Nate Santos plays

(52:48):
very well, that's when Dayton is kind of at their best.
So I like to see them use their speed and
you know, find those those moments where they can get
out and transition and and keep playing defense the way
they have since Maui. They haven't allowed more than seventy
points since the Yukon game, So they keep defending like
they have been and utilize that speed. I think they've

(53:10):
got a pretty good shot.

Speaker 2 (53:11):
What is your biggest concern in this game from a
Dayton perspective?

Speaker 12 (53:17):
The ice cold three point shooting. Dayton is currently nine
to forty from three their last two games. They're going
to a gym that is notoriously hard to shoot at,
so that is slightly concerning. And again you know, I
talked about the speed, but youth each side, if they
can use that to their advantage, that also does kind

(53:37):
of concern me. So it'll be an interesting They say
styles make fights, It'll be interesting to see which style
play you know, takes advantage of on Friday.

Speaker 2 (53:45):
I would agree with that. I think what's interesting about
this game is, you know, both teams are are getting
ready for conference play. The Big Twelve is a different
animal than the Atlantic ten, and so if you're dating,
there's a premium on winning games like this in the
non league portion of your schedule. It's why getting a
victory in Malley was so important against what has turned
out to still be a pretty good u Con team.

(54:06):
From a bear cap perspective, I think there's a sense of, well, yeah,
it would be a good win, but there are plenty
more opportunities ahead because of the Big Twelve. From a
UD perspective, how critical is getting a victory like this
to boost the NCAA tournament at large resume?

Speaker 12 (54:24):
It's definitely important. Dayton is currently ten and two. If
you'd have told me that they would have a chance
at eleven and two with the non con schedule, they
were going to play. I think almost every Dayton fan
would have signed up for that. But you know, it
is critically important because if Dayton wins this game on Friday,
I don't think it's the discussion is is Dayton going

(54:44):
to make the tournament? It's what seed are they.

Speaker 11 (54:46):
Going to get?

Speaker 12 (54:47):
As long as they handle their business in Atlantic send play.
So I think that's very well said that while this
game isn't a total need for you see, and I
don't think it's necessarily a need for Dayton either, but
it definitely bolsters Dayton's resume more than it will for
you see, because, like you said, the opportunities that they're
going to have down the line playing in the Big

(55:08):
Twelve as opposed to Dayton playing in the Atlantic.

Speaker 2 (55:10):
Dewn you the game last year? Dayton won, and one
pretty convincingly. As I recall, you produced that broadcast back
here in Kendall and sabotage did sabotage the game? Dan
Horde lost his voice. It just it was a nightmare.
It was a total nightmare. You are you working the
same Are you going to sabotage it again this year?

Speaker 12 (55:30):
If I'm going to sabotage it, I'm going to do
it from within the arena because I am not missing
this game this year. I made that a point I
missed last year to produce it on the radio, which
I was more than happy to do. As I said
to all of you when we started that broadcast, I
was going to keep it professional, but I was rooting
for the other team. And I am rooting for that
other team again this year, except I will be doing
it from inside.

Speaker 11 (55:50):
Heritage Bank Center.

Speaker 2 (55:51):
Now, where can folks find your podcast that you've never
had me on?

Speaker 12 (55:56):
Well, Mo, we will definitely have you on at some
point this year.

Speaker 2 (56:00):
I badly need to be on more podcast. Yeah.

Speaker 12 (56:03):
I know you keep a very tight schedule, so we'll
find some time for you. But it's talking out loud
l ow d you know, just kind of a inside
Dayton joke there. We've kind of been running it for
about six or seven years now. I became the showrunner
of it. Last season. We actually had Dad Brendle on.

(56:25):
We did an interview today that will be airing tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (56:28):
So what a what a what a coup? What a
get man? Nice job?

Speaker 12 (56:32):
Well, Well, I thank you, thank you. You know, the
radio station has a lot of perks that come with it.
And having connections to great guests is.

Speaker 7 (56:39):
One of them.

Speaker 2 (56:41):
There are perks working here.

Speaker 10 (56:43):
Wow, I like to think, so.

Speaker 2 (56:47):
All right, well I'll investigate that. Enjoy the game. Come
say hi on Friday. Okay, all right, you got it.
Most take care. Drew Western Heidi is our U d guy.
Dan Klaskins is our fantasy football If you still have
a team in the playoffs, which I do not, you'll
want his advice, he joins us. Next way from five o'clock,
it's the Ortho Cincy Moegar Show on ESPN fifteen thirty.

(57:12):
I'm glad that you're here. I'm glad that Dan Klaskins
is here. He has dispensed fantasy football help all year long.
Unfortunately his help has not helped me because I have
been eliminated from the postseason in one league and I
didn't come close to making it in the other. But
for those of you who are still alive, Dan can
provide some help and maybe help us teach some lessons

(57:34):
based on the twenty twenty four fantasy season. Hi, Dan,
what's up?

Speaker 10 (57:39):
Well, sorry to hear about that demise. Feeling you a
little bit. I had a few of those disappointing defeats
last week. But luckily I play in enough league where
I'm still alive in a few.

Speaker 2 (57:48):
Wow, very good. See you play it enough, eventually you're
going to stumble into the postseason. Good stuff. What are
some of the chance you've got a chance, just like
the Bengals, You've got a chance. All right. Give me
a handful of lessons that fantasy owners should have learned
this year.

Speaker 10 (58:07):
Yeah, it's always a good time to reflect, and certainly,
even if you do it long enough, you still have
things to reflect on. We're always learning, mow, and this
year a few that stick out number one, especially this year,
man embrace the unexpected. You think you plan appropriately, you
think it's all going to go right, and nothing throws
you for more curveballs. In the NFL, it's injuries all

(58:28):
the craziness. Never a better example of this. This year
you had Christian mccaffe. You drafted his handcuffed Jordan Mason. Well,
guess what it was Isaac Carnda that came up big
and now he's hurts. So unless he had his handcuff,
the San Francisco backfield didn't work out for you. And
going to injuries, MO, that's another thing drafting injured players.
It seldom works out. Every year we see guys take

(58:48):
chances on these guys that are hurt this year with PJ.
Hopkinson and missed them half this season Jonathan Brooks, the
rookie that never got over. Rookies are risky too. That's
the other thing. I mean, you get all in love
with the potential of these unknown players, but far too
often I see it in redraft leagues especially. I get
it in dynasty leagues or keeper league, but in leagues

(59:09):
that redraft players. Every year they draft rookies, they're not
patient enough, they drop them. Then somebody else picks up.

Speaker 11 (59:15):
The rookies and beats the people that draft them.

Speaker 10 (59:17):
To begin with. So just a few lessons to keep
in mind.

Speaker 2 (59:20):
All right, let's take a look at the lengthy list
of injuries heading into Week sixteen.

Speaker 10 (59:26):
Yeah, I think the big one in Tannasee. One of
the bigger ones this week obviously, is going to be
Patrick Mahomes. Each day that goes by, optimism is growing
that he'll play. Now, this is a Saturday game, so
we will have clarity on it. If nothing else. It's
the first of two Saturday games. First the Texans. I
expect him to go at this point. He's been a
fringe quarterback the whole time. I don't love him in

(59:47):
this matchup first Houston. Really, I expect them lean on
Pacheco in the running game and what I anticipate to
be a low scoring game. Gino Smith also trending in
a good direction with the knee issue, but still we'll
have to see how that plays out. Tommy DeVito the Giants,
I mean, who knows what quarterback? I think Drew locked
back last week. They had to go with Tim Boyle.
I mean it might be Molegger off the bench in

(01:00:08):
week eighteen.

Speaker 11 (01:00:09):
Who knows?

Speaker 10 (01:00:10):
The buzz hill for me moo and for a lot
of local fans, David Montgomery season any knee injury, he's
lost now, So Jamier Gibbs is just gonna have a
huge workload. Look for them to lean on Jared Goff.
Little bit we got Alvin Kamara reports today are he's done.
It might be done for the season now.

Speaker 5 (01:00:26):
Why not?

Speaker 10 (01:00:26):
The Saints have lost every other player they have nothing
to play for. Kendrick Miller gets interesting in his absence.
Caf Walker the third hasn't played in two weeks. We'll
see if he can come back from his calf. The
season's over for Nick Chubb broken foot. Add that to
the list of injuries. I mean, just not to what
we were hoping in his return. Isaac Correndo I mentioned
him before. He's now per Adam Schefter unlikely to play

(01:00:47):
here in Week sixteen.

Speaker 11 (01:00:48):
At a new hamstring injury there.

Speaker 10 (01:00:50):
George Pickens, that's the guy I was really hoping to
see comeback. Obviously, the Steelers and the Ravens in a
huge battle on Saturday in the later game, but right
now it's not looking go with hamstrings, Daalen Waddle with
the leg, zavierly Get with the groin, Cedric Tillman with concussion,
all other wideouts with something. They're good news on Tilman.
I do expect him back, but not expecting much as

(01:01:11):
the Browns make the change of quarterback and at tight end.
David Njokob did not practice again today, didn't play last week.
I don't think he's playing on Sunday versus the Bengals
at zach ERTs. He's still in concussion protocol.

Speaker 11 (01:01:22):
So yeah, just about every.

Speaker 10 (01:01:24):
Position hit pretty hard here in Week sixteen.

Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
Yeah, long list. Dan Klaskins Good Sportsinfo Dot com Ie
my weekly Studs, Duds and sleepers, even though I'm not
playing this week.

Speaker 10 (01:01:35):
Yeah, well, hopefully some listener have some of these guys
in there line, especially in my Studs and going with
James Connor. Absolutely love it Arizona at Carolina. Connor has
been very underrated again this year. A top ten running
back over the last five He's going against Carolina defense,
giving up over five yards of carry getting mashed on
the ground. He's a top five play for me this week,

(01:01:56):
and you know we all rode off the Jets Aaron Rodgers.
Devonte Adams is not going to Super Bowl. They might
win some Fantasy league championships the way they're playing. I
love Devonte Adams even this week versus the Rams. He's
inside my top five as well at receiver. On the
dud side, I'm sitting CJ. Strouty should have already been
doing that. By the way, I doubt any of his
owners are in the playoffs mode. But I don't like

(01:02:17):
the Texans offense, including Joe Mixon very much at Kansas
City and what I expect to be a low scoring affair.
The Amari Cooper trade hasn't really worked out either. Bill
did not get their wide receiver, one that fantasy managers
were hoping for. He can't be played versus New England.
Expect you know, Buffalo is now more than a two
touchdown favorite. How much are they going to be throwing
the football? The guy hasn't been getting targets to begin with.

(01:02:38):
And then the sleepers of the week, the two guys
that I think will be definitely in some winning fantasy
lineups this week.

Speaker 11 (01:02:44):
Adam Feeling Carolina versus Arizona.

Speaker 10 (01:02:47):
We talked about the other side during the you know,
the buys and everything last week a lot of and
they played disappointing against Dallas. It sort of fell off,
but I love him in this Arizona matchup. I think
it's going over. And Brenton Strange the waiver wire pickup
of the week at tight end. Every Ingram's out for
the season. Jacksonville has literally nothing outside of Brian Thomas Junior.
He saw twelve targets a week ago, and this week

(01:03:08):
he gets a Las Vegas team that without Mason Crosby.
Even when they had him, they gave up the fourth
most fantasy points two tight ends. I think Brendon Strange
is the top ten tight end and probably out there
on some waiver wires this morning.

Speaker 2 (01:03:21):
All right, Dan Klaskins, Get sportsinfo dot com. By the way,
next week Championship week for fantasy owners. I am working
next Thursday, so you and I have to do a segment.
Keep out in mind, right, very good to be here.

Speaker 11 (01:03:34):
We're here, we're here.

Speaker 7 (01:03:36):
Let's go close it out.

Speaker 10 (01:03:37):
With hopefully talking little super bowls. And I got a
few awards to hand out next week, maybe even one
for you.

Speaker 11 (01:03:42):
I come up with.

Speaker 5 (01:03:43):
Something very good?

Speaker 2 (01:03:44):
All right, what's happening right now at get sports info
dot com.

Speaker 10 (01:03:48):
Oh, he got all the great content there, my picks
for tonight and cooking, my bet of the week on
the office pool, picks of podcasts, and of course no
especially this time here. If you're really in a tough mind,
hit me up on exit, Dan Klaskins. I'll try to answer,
but maybe not with the right answer.

Speaker 2 (01:04:04):
I understand. We'll have a great Christmas. We'll talk next week.

Speaker 10 (01:04:09):
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas. Talk to you, Saim brother.

Speaker 2 (01:04:11):
You got a Dan Klaskins, Get sportsinfo dot com. Yes,
we have a show, just from a programming perspective, because
you know, Christmas things get a little bit Yanky. We
do have a Tony Remo football show on Monday at
Twin Peaks in Westchester. No show on Christmas Eve. I
think we have a best of show on Christmas Day
and then the day after, the twenty sixth, I will

(01:04:32):
be broadcasting from Buffalo Wild Wings Harper's Point, so you know,
celebrate Christmas and then I got to get out of
the house, come on out, hang out with us. And
I believe I think that's the day we find out
if I have won the iHeartMedia Employee the Year award.
On the twenty sixth, I think so. And I don't
know if that announcement is made while we're on the air,
but I think that's the day they announced the iHeartMedia

(01:04:55):
Employee of the Year. I am one of the finalists.
So we'll find out a.

Speaker 11 (01:04:58):
Five to one it is in with you on Thursday.

Speaker 2 (01:05:01):
You're not here next Thursday, No, okay, they come join you.
You could come to beat ups. Yes, well we'll have us.
If I win the iHeartMedia Employee the Year award, we'll
have a big celebration. There are beat ups to find
out when they announced that. All right, it's up five
away from five o'clock. Robert Wintraub is joining us. He's

(01:05:23):
awesome when it comes to talking about the Bengals. We'll
get to him at five twenty on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports.

Speaker 9 (01:05:29):
Nation, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 13 (01:05:34):
Traffic from the uc Health Traffic Center for Unmatched Cancer Care.
Choose the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center, the only regional
program offering proton therapy. Call five one, three, five eight
four beam on eastbound two seventy five. An earlier accident
now cleared away that after Turkey Foot Road, there is

(01:05:55):
still some slow traffic from seventy one to seventy five.
About a five minute delay right now, and eastbound on
Glenway Avenue. It's a disabled vehicle over near Lawrence Road.
I'm at Ezelek with traffic.

Speaker 1 (01:06:08):
No one covers the Bengals like ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's
Sports Station.

Speaker 2 (01:06:14):
All right, what's up? It's six after five. This is
ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank you for listening. It's the bud
Light five o'clock Happy hour, thanks to our friends at
bud Light. And let me tell you something I have
never wished I had a bud Light More. Those who

(01:06:35):
know me well know why. Hope you're having an awesome Thursday.
Our buddy Robert win Trup is going to join us.
Bud Light's perfect for any occasion, specifically the holidays. If
you're celebrating, celebrate with a high school bud Light. Also
the Orthosincia Moegar Show on ESPN fifteen thirty. I am

(01:06:56):
Moegar and thank you for listening. We have We've got
a game tonight. By the way, I just looked on
social media, our friend Paul Danner Junior reports that Joe
Burrow has gifted his offensive lineman. This is a thing
and has been for years in the NFL, or quarterbacks
by nice things for their offensive lineman. When I was

(01:07:17):
a kid, Dan Marino would do a commercial where he
would talk about giving his offensive lineman isotoner gloves, which
means are pretty nice. I guess I'm not a big
glove guy, but you know that's kind of nice. Joe
Burrow did not give his lineman isotoner gloves. He gave
them each authentic Japanese catana swords, and Paul writes they

(01:07:40):
are all unique. Each sword comes with its own story
from certain towns or battles. He put them all in
a room and had the lineman picked theirs out. That's
pretty cool. It's not the most functional gift. It's more
of a decorative item, I suppose. But on the list

(01:08:03):
of things that a quarterback could give their offensive lineman,
that's pretty it's unique. The best gifts are the unique ones.
My first year working at the radio station, we all
got extension cords, like legitimately that was that the company
gave us extension cords. It was our gift, and a
lot of people snickered and i was like twenty years

(01:08:24):
old at the time. I'm like, dude, I'll take your
extension cord. I went home with like nine extension cords.
I still have some of them to this day. Sword
would have been cooler. Also, one year we got hams,
like not good Hams, and this is like back in
two thousand and two or three or something, but they
were like these hands the hams that came in a can,

(01:08:46):
but like they didn't give them to us. They had
like the ham delivery driver in some like ugly white
van a pull up to the radio station and we
all had to like wait in line to get our
canned ham to not ask my coworkers for theirs. But
the sword is pretty I don't know why I talked

(01:09:07):
about that. The sword is pretty cool. Uh, there's a
big game tonight. I'm gonna I'm not gonna pretend that
the odds are gonna be stacked against the Bengals if
we get the result that we are looking for tonight.
By the way, one other note, really quick, thanks to
Terran for bringing this to my attention. Miles Garrett shows
up on the Browns injury report today with a back issue,

(01:09:29):
and so we'll be monitoring his availability. But first things first,
the game tonight. Look, the Bengals, depending on which model
you want to use, have anywhere from a two percent
to a six percent chance of making the postseason. I
think NFL dot Com has him at six percent playoff
status dot Com has them at two percent. They're DVOA

(01:09:50):
odds two point one percent. ESPN Analytics has them with
either four or five percent. Obviously not a likelihood those
percentages will go up. By the way, The odds I
care about are the betting odds, like if you genuinely
think this is gonna happen right now, plus seven hundred

(01:10:11):
at most books that will take that action. Not every
book will. Those odds will become even higher if the
Chargers lose tonight. But if the Chargers win, well, not
that it's going to be likely, but you're going to
see a bump up in the percentages. It's not gonna

(01:10:32):
climb over fifty percent. In fact, it's not even gonna
come close. But if you have spent the last couple
of weeks wondering what scenarios have to unfold for the
Bengals to qualify for the postseason, this is a game
that could take this from something that is an extreme
long shot to something that's merely not that likely. But

(01:10:55):
I think it will change the conversation just a little bit.
Chargers are a tune half point favorite. They have beaten
the Broncos. Denver is playing well, They've won four straight games.
They were in trouble last week against the Indianapolis Colts.
This is probably gonna be a really low score of game.
Bo Nix is a better quarterback than he was earlier
in the season. If Denver wins, well, I feel like

(01:11:24):
at that point we can call it right, like there's
sort of an election night, Like not all the precincts
are in, but we have counted enough votes. I think
if Denver wins the game tonight, then I feel like
we're gonna safely call it because then at that point,
what we would need to have happened is obviously for
the Bengals to still win their last three games, and

(01:11:46):
you would still need the Dolphins to lose a game
and the Colts to lose a game, but you would
need LA to lose twice and their last two opponents
are the Patriots and the Raiders. Now, if the Chargers win, well, again,
it's it's not likely, but it's a little bit more plausible,

(01:12:07):
in fact, a lot more plausible than if Denver wins.
At that point, the Bengals need to win out. Denver
needs to lose out. Cincinnati still needs a Miami loss
and an Indianapolis loss, but they do get the head
to head game against the Broncos, And so I think
we all know which outcome tonight is worth rooting for.

(01:12:34):
We'll see, we'll see it. It I think will, at
least through the fan base, I don't know about the team,
send a little surge of a little surge of energy
and optimism through everybody. If if LA wins the game tonight.
Uh five three fifteen thirty is the phone number. I
had folks on both sides of it met at me

(01:12:56):
because I talked about the Reds before. I just you know,
we're closing it on Christmas. The Reds have had some
pre Christmas deals that have gone through and kind of
gotten everybody excited for the season. They have done nothing
to improve their offense. Now, I listen to Nick Krawl
the other night in the Reds Hot Stove League, and frankly,

(01:13:16):
and this is his job. I don't think said anything
of substance, but what a lot of people are doing
are interpreting what he has had to say to mean
that they don't have the budget to be major players
in free agency. And maybe Nick Krawl does not. Nick
Crawl does not set the budget. But I'm done. I'm
not using that as an excuse, like you don't get

(01:13:38):
to use that with me, at least you don't get
to use well, we don't have the budget because of
the TV situation. Dude, You've had thirty years to get
a team to advance in the postseason. You've had a
couple of years to get this rebuild on track to
the point that we are talking about them being a
playoff team, I'm just, I'm My issue with the Reds
has never been what they spend. It's been with the

(01:13:58):
results they achieve. And my issue this year will not
be what they spend it to be with the results
they achieve. If those results are underwhelming, you don't get
a pass because well, they just don't have the budget
this year. Huh huh. This team is out of passes.
Figure it out, get it done, make the team better. Now,
if their approach to this offseason is to be passive

(01:14:19):
and they've projected a lot of their current players and
returning players from injury to be really good this year,
and they get it right, they will get credit for
that and deserve it. But I'm sorry they don't have
the budget for me. I just it's not that I'm
not buying it. Although I would say pick up the
phone then and call one of the nearly two dozen

(01:14:40):
other people who owns a stake in your team and
ask them to put some cash into the team after
making money hand over fist for years and years and years.
But I'm sorry. You knew the TV situation was tenuous
at best. You've had time to prepare, get it done.
Thank you for five. More college basketball coming up a

(01:15:02):
little bit later on UC and Dayton in a big
one tomorrow night. Meanwhile, Xavier lost what was a great game.
Every single night, there are really good college basketball games
on and last night in Hartford was no exception, at
least until the officials took over. And that is not
attributing the outcome to officiating. It's just a game that
was really well played where you didn't notice the officials

(01:15:24):
over the final few minutes, including the final minute of regulation,
you notice the officials just a little bit too much,
in large part because they spend a lot of time
hovering around a monitor, which is always entertaining. So is
Robert Wintrop. He joins us next talking about Bengals on
ESPN fifteen to thirty Cincinnati.

Speaker 9 (01:15:42):
Sports Station, Cincinnati's ESPN at.

Speaker 2 (01:15:46):
The Holy Rail starting at nine am. Myself, Tony Pike,
ken Brew will be there, although ken might be hungover
still if OU wins their bowl game tomorrow, so we'll
list Ken is questionable. I'll be there starting at nine
am on Sunday morning, taking you up to countdown to kickoff.
It's going to be a blast. We hope to see
you there. Of course, you can hear the game live

(01:16:07):
on ESPN fifteen thirty until one o'clock Bengals and Browns.
And by the way, that game tonight Chargers Broncos is
on Fox Sports thirteen sixty. So there you go. Robert
Windrob joins us on Thursdays covering writing a Bengals column
for Cincinnati Magazine which you could read every week. You
could read this week's column at Cincinnati Magazine dot com. Am,

(01:16:29):
I correct, you're actually gonna cover the game, will be
there in person on Sunday.

Speaker 14 (01:16:33):
Yeah, I had to pick the coldest game of the season,
the co Tendon versus Listen, bo I brave the elements.

Speaker 7 (01:16:40):
No indoor practice facility.

Speaker 10 (01:16:41):
Needed for me.

Speaker 14 (01:16:42):
I like you there, and yeah, looking forward to it.
I haven't been to pacoorp Stadium under its new name
since they changed it, so I'm looking forward to see
if there's really any difference between that and Paul Brown Stadium.

Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
Fro Well, the modern version of the stadium. I don't
know when the last time you were there. We'll say
somebody who for years was a critic of the Bengals
game day atmosphere.

Speaker 7 (01:17:04):
It's pretty good.

Speaker 2 (01:17:06):
They've done a nice job with the place. I'll give
them credit for that.

Speaker 14 (01:17:09):
Yeah, it's been about five years, I think six right
before the pandemic, so in twenty nineteen last time.

Speaker 7 (01:17:15):
So you know, it's been a while. And I've never.

Speaker 14 (01:17:18):
Actually seen Joe Burrow play a home game in person.
Seen him on the road and never at home. So
I'm very looking forward to that.

Speaker 2 (01:17:25):
Very good. How much time have you spent lip reading
this week?

Speaker 7 (01:17:30):
No more than usual. I come a couple of hours
at least a week. You know, have a hobby of
mine I like to pursue in my downtime.

Speaker 2 (01:17:39):
I'll say this to start.

Speaker 14 (01:17:40):
It's a good thing there were no cameras on me
watching they wouldn't have had any problems lip reading.

Speaker 7 (01:17:45):
I was cursing up a storm, a lot of explodeves here,
and I don't blame Joe for being super frustrated.

Speaker 5 (01:17:51):
You know.

Speaker 14 (01:17:51):
Listen, overall, I think it's a pretty you know, tempest
in the teapot.

Speaker 7 (01:17:57):
This is the NFL sideline. These guys are.

Speaker 14 (01:18:00):
It's a passionate game. That's a violent game. They go
off on each other a lot. We don't see one
one hundredth of the encounters, you.

Speaker 7 (01:18:09):
Know, and we see a lot of them.

Speaker 14 (01:18:11):
We've seen Aaron Rodgers push his coach this year, right,
we saw Travis Kelcey put a foe arm hammer on
on Andy Reid and the super Bowl, for God's sakes,
the Eagles sideline is like an octagon every weekend.

Speaker 7 (01:18:24):
So you know, I don't put a.

Speaker 5 (01:18:26):
Ton of stock in it.

Speaker 7 (01:18:27):
What I will say is there's still a lasting sort
of national and not in Cincinnati, I don't think really,
but a national perspective of by Zach Taylor. Why in
the world did this guy get a job? And you
know who is he to be hired?

Speaker 14 (01:18:42):
And this was a Dave Shoa two point zero And
it goes back to the Gary reasons, pulling on on
Dave Sheoa's hat, the famous infamous disrespect that he showed him, and.

Speaker 7 (01:18:53):
People have been waiting for something like that.

Speaker 14 (01:18:55):
I think for Burrow to go off on Zach Taylor,
for better or for worse.

Speaker 7 (01:19:00):
And you know, I think that's why it's.

Speaker 14 (01:19:02):
Gotten a lot of more play than maybe it should Nashally. Anyway,
Obviously in Cincinnati, we're all interested in it because of
the personal it's involved. But I think beyond it being
any kind of typical coach player frustration thing. It's just
as those undertones that might might have been carrying it
a little bit extra. But I think it'll all be
forgotten by this time next week.

Speaker 2 (01:19:23):
Yeah, I hope, So, I hope so, Like you know,
Zach Taylor, and I agree with what you said. I
think around the country there is this sense of what's
this dufe doing coach in the Bengals. He's not a
real NFL head coach. When it comes to criticisms of Zach,
I certainly have had them, and I've shared them publicly.
I also think I also believe he has some things

(01:19:44):
that he has done well that he doesn't nearly get
the credit for that I believe he deserves. I get
frustrated with him. I don't hold him as responsible for
what's happened with the team this year as much as most,
but I do understand that when you're losing, criticism, some
of the coach comes with the territory. And there again
have been things this year that I haven't liked generally speaking, question,

(01:20:08):
how do you feel about Zach Taylor?

Speaker 7 (01:20:11):
Well, that's you hit on it.

Speaker 14 (01:20:12):
I mean, listen, he's went to a super Bowl and
then you know, pulled it back and went to the
AFC Championship Game and almost got right back.

Speaker 7 (01:20:19):
To the super Bowl, but for you know, one bad penalty.

Speaker 14 (01:20:22):
I mean, you know, you can have criticisms of his
in game conservatism, you can have criticisms of this style
of offense or that style of coaching whatever. I mean,
he's had a lot of good results. We can't you know,
have to start there. And you know, any comparisons to
to Dave Shoell obviously are ludicrous.

Speaker 7 (01:20:41):
Now he's had the benefit of having.

Speaker 14 (01:20:43):
Joe Burrow, and I think the real issue I think
most fans have with him is still a sense of
underachievement with Joe Burrow. They want to see more if
that's all possible, and this year really comes to a head.
You can't say in twenty twenty or twenty twenty three,
the seasons that was injured that you know, it doesn't
fall on.

Speaker 7 (01:21:03):
Zach for that. Obviously that was everybody was frustrated by that.

Speaker 14 (01:21:06):
But this season it's been not just a healthy Burrow,
but a fantastic Burrow, and yet they have a losing record,
and I think that is or of course there's a
lot of frustration around that and there's a lot of
figures pointing at Zach Taylor, and deservedly so I don't,
as you say, put necessarily as much blame as I
ordinarily might in.

Speaker 7 (01:21:25):
This situation onto Taylor.

Speaker 14 (01:21:27):
I think he's done a pretty good job under trying
circumstances in a lot of ways this year. But you know,
it remains the fact that coaches and quarterback combinations got
to win that Super Bowl in the first five years
together or it just doesn't happen.

Speaker 7 (01:21:41):
Historically they came oh so close, but it didn't happen.
And now I think there's this feeling of, you know,
are they really going to be able to get back to.

Speaker 14 (01:21:49):
Where they were and those magical second and third years together,
or is it just going to be a downward trend
of backsliding before the Mangals do the inevitable and find
somebody else to coach Burrow And you know, I hate to.

Speaker 7 (01:22:03):
Go that stark in it, but you know, it's not
it's not hard to.

Speaker 14 (01:22:07):
See that happening because it's happened so often in Cincinnati before,
where we assume that good times are going to continue
and instead the bad times come faster until a landslide hits.

Speaker 7 (01:22:16):
Yeah, nobody wants to see that.

Speaker 2 (01:22:18):
No, no question about that. Robert Wintroup is with a
Cincinnati magazine dot com. Should last week have been, assuming
he has done for the season, should last week have
been Sam Hubbard's final game in the Bengals uniform?

Speaker 5 (01:22:31):
Boy?

Speaker 7 (01:22:31):
Anyway in a Bengals uniform is the key answer there.
You know, listen, I think there's a possibility that he
could come back in a role of a guy like
Cam Sample, who you know, the Bengals have actually kind
of missed this year.

Speaker 14 (01:22:44):
I feel like, you know, a fifteen to twenty snap guy,
edge setter, tough run defender, good veterans, solid presence in
the locker room. You could definitely see Hubbard playing a
role like that, presuming he's healthy enough to. You know,
the injuries have really taken their toll over the last
couple of years. He may just want to hang it
up and said that's enough. But I mean, this is
the Cincinnati kid.

Speaker 5 (01:23:04):
You know.

Speaker 7 (01:23:05):
It's hard to see a guy like Hubbard, you know,
taking a contract and playing a couple of years at
the end with the Vikings or whatever.

Speaker 5 (01:23:12):
You know.

Speaker 7 (01:23:12):
I mean, it's like it.

Speaker 14 (01:23:13):
Feels like both sides at the end of the day,
are probably gonna want to make something like that happen.
Not for nine million dollars that he's out next year,
but you know, for a for a price that's amenable
to a guy playing fifteen to twenty snaps as a
as a real run defender next year, I could probably
see that, you know, coming, depending on you know, what
other moves they make at the end position and who

(01:23:35):
gets healthy and comes back next year.

Speaker 7 (01:23:37):
It's not impossible. And if he does go out, obviously
you'd like to go out as any defensive player would
with a touchdown reception.

Speaker 2 (01:23:44):
Yes, that's the crazy thing about the entire scenario is
what it might end up being a catch I was.

Speaker 14 (01:23:52):
I don't know that he's getting the proper the props
for his you know, his hands on that play.

Speaker 7 (01:23:57):
That was not an easy catch at all, and he
made it look pretty well, pretty simple. So give give
Sam credit if it is his last you know sort
of memory as a Bengal. What a what a great
one to have.

Speaker 2 (01:24:09):
Yeah, no question about that. What about the two guards
Joe Burrow gifted his his offensive lineman like Japanese swords.
I think I would rather impale myself with one of them,
than watch Cordell Volson and uh and uh Alex Kapa
next year.

Speaker 7 (01:24:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (01:24:24):
I think that was Joe's subtle way of saying, boys
is kind of fall on your sword and commit ritual.

Speaker 7 (01:24:30):
Hari kari, uh and uh get out of this locker room.
They've been They've been brutal.

Speaker 11 (01:24:35):
Listen.

Speaker 7 (01:24:35):
I mean we've talked about it at length all season.
Every every week.

Speaker 14 (01:24:40):
It feels like, you know, they're holding the team back
in so many ways. You know, Alex cap obviously now
was a concussion. See I hate to talk badly about
his play last week, but it was. It almost seems
like he's had a concussion all season. I mean, he's
just the fall off has been unbelievable. He's just one
of a number of guys who you know, I'm I mean,

(01:25:00):
he's been on a downward trend.

Speaker 7 (01:25:01):
And we've talked about it before. He probably should not
have come back as their starting guard this year, but
you know, he hasn't been the same player since the
end of twenty two when he was injured. You know,
Volson is more difficult. He's a young player.

Speaker 14 (01:25:15):
You know, he had a ceiling and he's probably reached it.
But you still think he would have at least maintained
the level of play that he had last year, which
was actually pretty decent. But he's really fallen off a
cliff as well. And it's you know, we talked about
this last week. It's just going to be dependent because
they have so many needs in so many places.

Speaker 7 (01:25:32):
How they allocate their resources. Are they going to be
able to replace them both with free agents or is
it going to be one free agent?

Speaker 14 (01:25:39):
And then what do you do with the draft pick
who probably will have a lot of the same issues
as Volsen does. Are they going to give Wolsen a
chance to you know, improve in the offseason and come
back and try and win that job. You know, he's
on a rookie contract still, I think he'll get every
chance to do that, and he may not keep it,
but he'll be on the team next year.

Speaker 7 (01:25:58):
I think there's no doubt about that.

Speaker 2 (01:26:01):
One more for you. Are you ready can the Chargers?
Can the Chargers take care of business and beat the
Broncos tonight?

Speaker 5 (01:26:08):
You know what?

Speaker 6 (01:26:09):
They will?

Speaker 7 (01:26:09):
And here's the reason why, Because they have just activated
tight end had.

Speaker 14 (01:26:16):
Yes, if you had not known that he was on
the Los Angeles Chargers you would join the club, because
most people don't.

Speaker 10 (01:26:23):
I've forgotten it.

Speaker 7 (01:26:24):
Myself, but I saw today that he was activated. That
will be the key difference. Sure they can win.

Speaker 14 (01:26:29):
I you know, they're at home, their favorites, they got
the better quarterback, as good.

Speaker 7 (01:26:33):
If not better a coach.

Speaker 14 (01:26:34):
They beat the Broncos already this year, and all of
Cincinnati is locked yes and prayer and hopes that they
will do so.

Speaker 7 (01:26:42):
So probably it won't happen in that case, but you know, I.

Speaker 14 (01:26:46):
Think definitely they can, and it would just give us
a little bit more chance in this law season.

Speaker 7 (01:26:51):
We need something that, you know.

Speaker 14 (01:26:54):
Lock onto and have a little bit of hope to
the last remaining games.

Speaker 7 (01:26:57):
And I want the game that I attend next week
to have a little bit of meaning. You know's they
got to beat the Browns before they beat the.

Speaker 14 (01:27:03):
Broncos next week, Cincinnati, So hopefully there'll be a reason
to play hard and go all the way through to
the end of the season with at least a little
bit of a chance to make the playoffs in the
miracle run.

Speaker 2 (01:27:14):
So are you will you be there for the Browns game,
of the Broncos.

Speaker 7 (01:27:17):
Game, just the Browns game, Okay?

Speaker 14 (01:27:19):
I can't meet the Broncos game, but you know I
happen to be in Ohio next week.

Speaker 7 (01:27:23):
Yeah, this weekend, I should say.

Speaker 14 (01:27:24):
And can't come to Ohio and not visit with my
with my good pals in stripes.

Speaker 2 (01:27:31):
Very good, have a good time, man. Thank you so much.

Speaker 7 (01:27:33):
Great to be appreciated. Well, thanks so much, and happy holiday.

Speaker 2 (01:27:36):
Likewise, right back at you. That's our guy. Robert Win

Speaker 1 (01:28:07):
The coverage begins Sunday morning at nine on ESPN fifteen thirty,
the official home of the Bengals.

Speaker 2 (01:28:13):
Would you like an injury report? I give it to
you Sports Headlines for a service of Kelsey Chevrolet, home

injury report here it is. Are you ready? Trey Hendrickson
back full go today. T Higgins no go today, Joe

(01:28:35):
Burrow again limited Geno Stone full go today showing up
on the report for the Browns.

Speaker 5 (01:28:41):
No go.

Speaker 2 (01:28:42):
Miles Garrett with a back issue. He was a full
go yesterday. Bengals Browns Sunday at one pregame from the
Holy Grails Sunday morning, starting at nine tonight. The Bengals
postseason chances can increase if the Chargers beat the Denver
Broncos play tonight. You can hear. Good God, you could

(01:29:04):
hear the game live on Fox Sports.

Speaker 11 (01:29:07):
Are you all right?

Speaker 2 (01:29:08):
I'm getting choked up about the game tonight. You could
hear the game tonight on Fox Sports thirteen sixty. Just
hang on, hang on, let's take it. Take a little drink.

Speaker 11 (01:29:19):
Here, an emotional game for you tonight.

Speaker 2 (01:29:23):
It is yes. Nick's Tea. Wolves MC Cincinnati's twenty twenty
five Major League Soccer regular season schedule was released today.
The Orange and Blue will open up MLS play at
home against the New York Red Bulls, the defending Eastern
Conference champs that game will be on Saturday, February of
the twenty second, and as you might imagine, the regular

(01:29:46):
season schedule goes all the way until mid October. That
is a grind man. The Reds have acquired a pitcher
Off Waivers from the ranger Royinsey Contreras, who throws six pitches.
I see on the internet. Last season Rowansi had an
ERA of four point four one. There you go. Last

(01:30:10):
season he started with the Pirates, pitched in twelve games,
and then he went to the Angels, and he pitched
mainly out of the bullpen, and and there you go.
I was gonna say something else about roe Enzi Contreras,
but I got nothing. The West Miller Radio Show is
tonight at eight o'clock from the original Montgomery in Cincinnati

(01:30:32):
and Dayton getting sent to square off Tomorrow night Bearcats v. Flyers,
and hockey. This evening, the Columbus Blue Jackets have a
game against the New Jersey Devils, and there is no
local radio coverage of that game because of the football.
But that game is in Columbus, and as I look
at ESPN right now, if you want to drive to Columbus,

(01:30:52):
tickets start as low as eight Bucks if you want
to go see that thing that game? All right, Tarren?
How are we on time? What are we doing?

Speaker 11 (01:31:02):
What's we got three minutes left?

Speaker 2 (01:31:07):
All right? Mike, we are limping to the finish line.
You're on ESPN fifteen thirty. Go ahead.

Speaker 5 (01:31:14):
I'm a sprinter. I can do it.

Speaker 15 (01:31:16):
Okay, you do you do you consider Baker Mayfield top
seven or eight at this.

Speaker 5 (01:31:25):
Point this year?

Speaker 2 (01:31:28):
I don't know that I have given it that much thought, Mike,
top seven or eight. So so if I'm like thinking
of quarterbacks that I view to be better than Baker Mayfield, Burrow, Goff,
Lamar Hurts, Josh Allen, Mahome, I mean Mahome statistically hasn't

(01:31:49):
been great this year, but is the for my money,
the better player. Darnold this season I think has been better.
Without looking at a side by side statistical comparison, I
still think I would take jayde and Daniel's long term
over Baker Mayfield, but part of that is the value
of a rookie contract. Tua has played fine when he's

(01:32:10):
been healthy, but there's a question with him. I certainly
do believe Justin Herbert's better years are in front of him,
but I do give Baker Mayfield a lot of credit, man,
because two years ago it kind of felt like he
was just gonna live this nomadic existence of either bridge
guy or backup or maybe a placeholder, and instead he's

(01:32:32):
a franchise guy on a dangerous Tampa Bay team. I
give him a lot of credit for that.

Speaker 5 (01:32:37):
What about Stafford and Stroud?

Speaker 4 (01:32:40):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (01:32:41):
Stroud this season has has obviously been fine, and I
still I'll buy all your imaginary CJ. Stroudstock. When I
have watched the Texans this year, I have been I
have been underwhelmed. I have been underwhelmed. And Stafford this season,
Stafford's played fine, Obviously. The big story there is the
guys he hasn't had to throw to. But if you
gave me, if you said, next year, you're starting quarterback

(01:33:04):
can be Matthew Stafford or Baker Mayfield, I would probably
take Matthew Stafford.

Speaker 5 (01:33:08):
Yeah, I would too. Okay, I got them. I gotta
move here. Okay.

Speaker 15 (01:33:12):
Biggest day in college football history coming up Saturday, starting Saturday.

Speaker 16 (01:33:16):
In your opinion, maybe, I mean I I don't know
if it's the it's we've never had a twelve team playoffs,
so we've never had three quarterfinal games in one day.

Speaker 2 (01:33:29):
But they're still there, not even quarterfinal games, their first
round games. Yeah, I mean, you know they're they set
the field of eight. It's it's different and it's fun
and it's unique. I maybe I don't I don't know
that I would consider it the biggest I don't know.

Speaker 6 (01:33:45):
Maybe it sounds like one.

Speaker 15 (01:33:48):
And then I heard you make a comment earlier because
I was in and out of treatment about you about
the Reds all in kind of comment. You didn't necessarily
have to have all In so you could recapitulate that, man, I.

Speaker 5 (01:34:03):
Know you got to go.

Speaker 16 (01:34:03):
Well.

Speaker 2 (01:34:03):
All In would suggest we are going to sacrifice what
we're doing long term for the sake of winning right now.
I think you can make your team better and not
do that, you know, go back to the trade deadline
two years ago. I did not, and still do not
subscribe to the belief that in order to make the
team better they had to derail their long term plan.
You can certainly try to win in the short term

(01:34:24):
and not blow up your chances of winning in the
long term. So I want the Rets to make their
team better, and I want to see them make roster upgrades,
and I do not buy the budget being an excuse,
and I don't rest my laurels on all the injured
guys last year. Being healthy and being productive. I think
you can make the team better without blowing up your

(01:34:45):
chances of winning down the road. Now, do I think
they will get to a point or do I hope
they get to a point where it makes sense to
sacrifice something long term for the sake of going all
in right now? Yes, I don't know that they're there,
but that doesn't mean they can't make the team better. Unfortunately,
from an offensive perspective, they have yet to do.

Speaker 12 (01:35:04):
So Yep, you got it.

Speaker 15 (01:35:06):
Thanks Mo. I appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (01:35:08):
I appreciate you, Mike, and if I don't talk to you,
I hope you have a healthy Christmas. We're done, begles
pep Rally is in our place tomorrow with two broadcasters
who know how to talk. Friday Football Frenzy is from
noon to three tomorrow, and I'm back Monday for the
Tony and Mo Football Show at Twin Peaks in Westchester,
so hopefully we'll see you there. Have a great weekend.

(01:35:30):
Thanks to Tarren Bland for producing, and most important, thanks
to you for listening. Have a great night. This is
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station.

Speaker 7 (01:35:46):
Kevin Hart.

Speaker 2 (01:35:47):
