Speaker 1 (00:00):
And us. Good afternoon, pull my legos. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Thank you for listening today spending part of your Wednesday
afternoons with us. This has been a great meet because
we've been out. I like doing the show out. I
like I'm doing the show in the studio. It's fine,
but it's fun to get out. You're not within the
confine of the room and you can get out and
hang out and see people and eat and drink and.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Today we are at Turfway Park Racing and Gaming, where
tonight is the opening of the live racing season.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
And that's a really big deal here.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
If you haven't been to Turfway Park for live racing,
it's beautiful, it is awesome. If you haven't been to
where we are, we are inside Churchill's Bourbon and Brew,
which is you walk into Turfway Park Racing and Gaming
the main entrance and you'll see us. We're on the
stage and this is a great place to post up
and watch sports. So it could be a Bengals game,
(00:59):
all the colleg football conference championship games this weekend college hoops.
They also have awesome entertainment. I've been here for a
few Friday nights to watch bands play and betting kiosks
right outside where we are obviously all the games. This
is a really cool place. Learn more at Turfway dot com.
We thank them for having us out second time this year.
(01:22):
We did a show here back in March, and we're
back here today and we thank them for their hospitality
and thrilled to be here. We have a lot of
ground to cover on our show today. Rick Boring is
going to join us coming up in just about forty minutes.
Xavier is getting set to take on TCU on the
road tomorrow. Many will say the shine has come off
(01:42):
the skyline Chile Crosstown Shootout because Xavier lost to Michigan
last week and then had a narrow escape against South
Carolina State, and the Bearcats lost last night on the
road against Villanova, a game that we will discuss coming
up here in just a few minutes. Whenever I hear
someone say that the shine has come off the skyline
Chili Crosstown Shootout, my retort is get back to me
(02:07):
in like the minute or two before the ball goes
in the air. On shootout day, we'll talk about the
Muskies with Rick coming up at three forty five. Same
for NKU, which lost on the road last night against
Akron by thirteen points.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Rick was on the call for that.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
We'll spend some time on the Bearcats with our buddy
Chad Brendle at four twenty.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
I'm not here tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
I'm not on the ear tomorrow, and so Chad typically
joins us on Thursday.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
There's a lot to discuss with Chad. We'll put a
bow in the UC football season.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
We'll talk about early signing Day and get his thoughts
on the game last night, which was I think confirmation
of something that we knew but maybe didn't want to admit.
We'll spend some time on that a little bit later
on Richard Skinner on the Bengals at five twenty. Bengals
news today is unfortunate, because you know the Bengals, you
(02:56):
might argue you don't have a lot to play for.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
I was hoping that Evan.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
McPherson could finish the season well enough, be productive enough,
and good enough to kind of put behind him the
struggles that we have spent so much time talking about
this year and go into twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Mechanically where he needs to be, mentally, where.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
He needs to be and have that not be a
thing we wonder about in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Let's face it, with some of his issues this season.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Maybe not a total unknown for twenty twenty five, but
had those struggles continued, I think we were gonna spend
a lot of time this offseason wondering, all right, what
do the Bengals do a kicker? Do they bring in competition?
Is Evan gonna be okay? What happens if he struggles
to start the season next year? Well, unfortunately for Evan McPherson,
he is dealing with a groin injury. This according to
(03:50):
Microuffalo of NFL Network, So he's gonna miss a few weeks.
Bengals worked out some kickers today and they're gonna sign
cade Yorke, formerly of the Cleveland Browns and briefly this
year of the Washington Commanders. The Bengals aren't saying, they
haven't made any official announcement about this, but they're not
saying that McPherson's going to miss the season, But there
certainly does seem to be a belief out there.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
That Evans twenty twenty four is over. He kicked okay.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
I guess against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. But this
ends up being a very uneven season for him. And
you know, the Bengals kicker in twenty twenty five is
probably still going to be Evan McPherson, and the Bengals
kicker in twenty twenty five should probably still be Evan McPherson.
But I was hoping that he could use the last
five or six games to kind of get back on
(04:38):
track and put behind him, hopefully once and for all,
some of the issues that he had had this season.
Bengals and Cowboys on Monday Night Live on ESPN fifteen thirty,
Richard Skinner, as I mention, is gonna join us coming
up at five twenty. Meanwhile, there's Red's news. So the
Reds are reportedly engaged in discussions with the Chicago White
(05:02):
Sox to acquire Ace Garrett Crochet. This according to a
John Morosi of Fox Sports tweeted this this morning that
the Reds and Cubs are among the viable candidates excuse
me to acquire White Sox Ace Garrett Crochet, and he
points out the Cubs in White Sox Crosstown rivals have
made four trades since twenty seventeen. Now he uses the
(05:26):
word among so Red's cubs, among which would suggest there
are others.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
If you don't know.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
A lot about Garrett Crochet, first of all, please do
me a favor. You know the rule on this show, right,
Please do me a favor and do not mention his
win lost total, because we don't do that on this show.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
We have gotten through the entire twenty twenty four year.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
I believe without mentioning a picture's win lost total, and
I'm not gonna mention it with.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Garrett Crochet because it's irrelevant. Here's what he is.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
A twenty twenty four All Star on the worst team
maybe in baseball history, who had an ERA last season
of three to five eight, struck out two hundred and
nine batters and one hundred and forty six innings and
only walked thirty three. His home runs per nine one
point one. He has two more years of team control.
He is arbitration eligible this season. He made just under
(06:19):
a million dollars last year. He is going to get
a pretty hefty raise in twenty twenty five. He made
eight hundred thousand dollars. He's gonna get a pretty hefty
raise in twenty twenty five. Regardless of where he pitches.
If you trade him trade for him, you get him
for two more years. So a couple of things about
this number one redskneed Bats. We know the Redsney Bats.
We also know the Redsney depth. At the same time,
(06:41):
are you really going to turn your nose up at
a twenty five year old All Star who just got
through a full season, which Hunter Green didn't, and Andrew
Abbott didn't, and Graham Ashcraft didn't, and Nicolodolo didn't, and
Brandon Williamson didn't and Rhet Louder didn't because he got
called up in September. If you believe, as many do,
that you can truly never have enough starting pitching, then
(07:03):
you can't be upset at the possibility that the reds
will add to a group that includes Brady Singer and
some of the guys I just mentioned, a guy who
was an All Star last year and who might still
be ascending at just twenty five years old. It's worth
asking two things. If you trade for Garrett Crochet, does
(07:27):
that preclude you from making trades for players.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Who helped the offense?
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Does it preclude you from making trades elsewhere? Reds need
help offensively. The Reds need death Redsney the thumper and
the outfielder in the outfield, they need help help. They
might need somebody to replace Jonathan India. You can get
some of those guys via free agent. But if you
make a trade for a pitcher in the second one
of the offseason, does that keep you from making a
(07:55):
trade for a position player. I don't know that the
answer is yes or no. I'm guessing. If I ask
do you want the Reds to trade for Garrett Croche,
the instant answer is yes, and it should be right.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
Wait a minute.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
We can get a twenty five year old dude who
was an All Star last year, pitched in thirty three games,
strikes out a ton of guys, does an okay job
keeping the ball in the ballpark, doesn't walk anybody.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
Yes, I want him, fine.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
But before you really answer, ask yourself this, Am I
really okay with the Reds trading for Garrett Crochet?
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Like?
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Am I really okay with it? Because if you're really
okay with it, you're not gonna bring up what they
give up. Reds have some guys in the farm system
that are enviable pieces. I don't want to give up
Cam Collier for example. I don't want to give up
Edwin Royo for example. I don't want to give up
Chase Petty for example. But a picture of his caliber
(08:58):
that other teams are interested in is gonna cost you
a lot. I bring this up because over the last
two seasons, starting in twenty twenty three, when the Reds
surprisingly were in contention, boy, you heard from a whole
lot of folks didn't want to mortgage the future, didn't
want to give up too much, what didn't want to
move on from a prospect. And then we had some
(09:19):
of the same conversations last offseason, and we had some
of the same conversations during the year last year, and
it's it's it's interesting to me. I will find some
of the same people who say the Reds aren't really
serious about winning. They will turn their nose up at
even the mention of giving up prospect capital.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
I'm okay giving up prospects. I'm not okay.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
I don't really want to give up Cam Collier, to
be honest with you, but I'm wanna win the World
Series in twenty twenty five. And you know, I mean,
I know that sounds sort of out there. Given the
fact that it's been forever since the Reds even advanced
in the playoffs, we're gonna celebrate I guess the thirtieth
anniversary this year. This year the last time they advanced
in the postseason.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
But I want to win. I wanna win the World Series.
Name I'm not.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Interested in twenty twenty eight and twenty twenty nine and
twenty thirty, and I would to win.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
The World Series this year.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
But understand, if this is what you want the Reds
to do, it's it's gonna come at a cost. Now,
maybe it's it's a trade like the one the Reds
made with the Kansas City Royals, where they give up
an established big league player. But the Royals made the
postseason last year. They're in contention. The Chicago White Sox
finished with the worst record in the history of the sport.
So they need minor league guys. They need prospects, they
(10:29):
need controllable big leaguers.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
They need a lot.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
They've got a valuable trade ship that they can dangle
in order to get a lot back. Are you now
after two years of doing this? Every time I ask,
are you really willing to give up valuable prospect capital?
Every other time I've asked this, the answer has been no.
Are we finally ready for the answer to be yes?
(10:55):
The answer for me has been yes all along?
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Are you with me? Now? We're on site? I said
this yesterday.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
Typically when we're on site, there's a reluctance by a
lot of folks who typically would call a show to
not And then I mentioned it yesterday and folks joined
the show. So we'll try again today. Five point three
seven four nine, fifteen thirty and eight six six seven
oh two three seven seven six.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
We'll get you in.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
You can send a tweet at Moeger Show. Preview video
is up thanks to our friends at Emory Federal Credit Union,
your credit union with heart since nineteen thirty nine. Go
to EMORYFCU dot org. Watch it on X, follow along
and hang out with us till six o'clock. We're at
Turfway Park, racing and gaming till six. You see loses
last night, A sobering loss, a tough game to watch,
(11:43):
not a very good performance. A few decisions by Wes
Miller that I think are worth discussing. But I think
what last night did is it confirmed something we knew
but didn't.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Want to admit. That's next on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports Station since after three.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
This is ESPN just seen thirty broadcasting today from Turfway
Park Racing and Gaming.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
We're in inside.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Churchill's permanent brew. Live racing starts to night here at
Turfway Park.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
We thank them for having us out here.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
Love come to Turfway and a great place to post
up and watch college basketball, college.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Pretty much anything and bet on it here. That's the key.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
You could wager on it, or he could just watch
and not wager whatever. Tough one last night for the Bericats.
I think that goes without saying sixty eight to sixty.
I had a bad feeling early in the game because
I didn't love the pace at which it was played.
Cincinnati cut it two in the second half. They allowed
and we talked about this on the show yesterday. They
(12:47):
allowed Eric Dixon to go off. And he's a guy
who can score inside and out. We saw that last night.
He scored thirty one. He's a high volume guy. It's
interesting he got twenty three shots. The teammate who had
the second most amount of shots had eight. Villan over
for the game. At one point in the second half,
I think was shooting fifty six percent. They were good
(13:07):
at the free throw line. The Bearcats on either side
played well. They didn't defend offensively. They looked out of rhythm,
they looked out of sorts, and I think something to
a small degree.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Got exposed last night that I believe they can overcome. First,
let's hear from west Miller.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Yeah, well, congrats to Kyle and his group. You know
they I thought they had a really nice game plan.
They came out and changed defenses early and switched ball
screens and saw that on the first possession, and that
surprised us a little bit because we've seen him do
a little bit of that with Dixon on tape. We
(13:50):
had not seen very much switching with the two centers
unless it was a late switch in their drop. So,
you know, I thought that forced us into a lot
of isolation and one on one situations and stagnated us.
And you know, we didn't handle that well, but give them,
give them credit for that. Again, I didn't like us
(14:11):
defensively in the first half at all. I didn't think
we carried over our game plan and did the things
well that we value. But give villain, I'm not one
of these guys, it hits up and just complains about
all this stuff we didn't do well.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
Give them credit for making.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
Us do it poorly.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
So they again, they were good offensively there. I think
they had thirty eight in the first half, and we
did not get our hands on balls. They beat us
to loose balls, they beat us to offensive rebounds, and
we created a little bit of a hole for ourselves there.
And then I thought we had some good moments in
the second half digging back out of it. I expect
that from my group, you know, but not enough and
not consistent enough. And it was hard with the whistle
(14:48):
not stop, and we kept getting with our rotation.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
We kept having a lot of problems.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Subbing because you know, they think the whistle doesn't blow
for the first six seven minutes the game. And now
we got a ton of guys at the same time,
and those lineups, you know, probably weren't what we were
preparing for. And then you know, it kind of happened
again in the second half to start the second half.
So you know, a lot of things didn't go our
way tonight. And give Villanova credit. I'm obviously not pleased,
(15:18):
but again, give them, give them credit for coming out
and playing well.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Cincinnati shot thirty eight percent last night from the field,
just under thirty one percent from behind the arc, and
a not very good six for eleven from the free
throw line sixty eight to sixty. The final score, I
think there were three for me. Three takeaways. Number one
this is This is a very obvious takeaway and it's
worth mentioning. It's not an excuse.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
They got to get.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Dan Skillings back, and whether or not he can play
in the Skyline Chili Crosstown shootout or in the game
against Dayton, I don't know. They they need him back
when they are playing two tough games a week in
the Big twelve h he helps them in so many
different ways.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Let's be honest. There's there's no one who can do
all the things he does. I think, you know, we
talk and we've done it with this team a lot
this year.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
In September and October, when we're looking ahead of the season,
we talk about teams that are like they're ten deep
or eleven deep, and I always, I always kind of
shake my head at that because I think when you
get to January and February, nobody's playing ten guys nobody's
playing eleven guys. They're playing seven or eight and in
some cases nine, depending on you know, the opponent, the conditions,
(16:28):
how the game has officiated, that sort of thing. So,
you know, the Bearcats, I've heard a lot of all that.
You know, they can go eleven deep, they can go
ten deep, can they and tough games.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
On the road? I don't know.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
I don't know that they can yet, and I'm not
sure they're going to when the games get really hard.
I do understand a coach who still wants to try
to work in as many players as possible in early December,
but I think situationally, I think West got caught with
a lineup on the floor after his team had climbed
all the way back in the second half half.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
That just wasn't very good on either end.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
You know, they've got a guy in Tyler Betsy offensively,
I think it's gonna be terrific liability on defense. Arronton
Page didn't do much on either side of the floor.
I think he's been a little bit of a liability
on defense. Josh Reed Josh Reed came in and made
a shot. I think he made both of his field
goal attempts but I think there's a limitation of what
he can do. You're gonna play those guys, but you've
(17:25):
got to have them surrounded with the better players on
the team. The problem last night and a key stretch
of the game is they were surrounded by each other.
Chad Reynold's going to talk about that and so much
more coming up at four to twenty. There was also
this look Eric Dixon was the best player on the floor.
I think, if anything, last night was confirmation of something
(17:48):
that if we were being honest, we knew but maybe
didn't want to admit. There are going to be games
this season, multiple, maybe more than just a couple, where
Cincinnati doesn't have the best player on the floor. They're
gonna have to figure out a way to overcome that. Oftentimes.
(18:10):
I think they will because they might have players number two, three, four,
and five, but the collection of players at times this
season is going to have to overcome a team that
has the best player and maybe the best two players.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
That sounds like I'm taking a shot at some of
the UC players. I'm not.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
I mean, there's a lot of programs and ranked teams
and high end college basketball in the Big Twelve who
would love Gisel James or Dan Skillings or Simas Lukashis
or Connor Hickman or as he's bandego, or Dylan.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Mitchell, who I'm a huge fan of, but I don't.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
I talked about this with Channa on my ride here
because I just needed someone to talk to about the Bearcats,
and he said, look, they don't have a top one
hundred player on their.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
Team, and I don't think they do.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
I don't think they have anybody on their team that
just screams like NBA draft pick. I don't know that
Eric Dickson screams first round pick. But dude can do
a lot. We went into the last night knowing he
was probably gonna be the best player on the floor,
and he was, so I think we kind of knew
that going in, maybe didn't want to admit it. Now
(19:15):
we know it coming out. You can win when you
don't have the best player on the floor. But when
you don't have the best player on the floor, maybe
you're missing that guy that can stop another team six
to zero or eight to zero run by just getting
you a bucket, right, that.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
Sort of thing. And maybe Dan Skillings is going to
become back guy.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
But I think they're gonna have games this season, and
I think they're gonna have situations.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
This year where the collection of parts has to be better.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
And not to take anything away from you know, jami
Or Brickiss was really good last night and Woga Poplar
was really good last night. I mean, some of the
the complimentary pieces for Villanova did what Kyle Neptune wanted
them to do. But to me, that was the big takeaway.
And December fourth, there is time. The great thing about
(20:01):
college basketball. One of the great things about college basketball
to me is watching teams go from what they are
in November and December and seeing what they become in
February and March. And I if you're selling your stock
on UC I'll buy it up. And I'll admit it.
It does maybe make you a little bit more skittish
if you're a Bearcat fan about the Skyline Chili Crosstown shootout.
I think it puts a lot more emphasis on winning
(20:22):
that game and the Dayton game because you don't want
to go into conference play, which is gonna be tough
with multiple losses. Cincinnati is gonna be favored, I think
in both.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
But if there was a big takeaway, from last night.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
For me, it was this team's gonna have to do
a better job of figuring out how to win when
the other team has the best individual player, because that
will happen again this season.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Three thirty on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
Brindle's gonna join us at four to twenty on both
the basketball game last night and early signing day and
to put a bow in the five and seven UC season.
Scott Sanderfield did talk today, in fact, just a short
while ago. We'll have some of that for you. We've
got to get to hard knocks based on her knox
last night. I'm gonna make a confession and you're going
to get mad at me. We've also got to talk
about a phone call from yesterday's show, and we've got
(21:08):
phone calls on today's show to get to. When we
come back, we're at Turfway Park racing and gaming. It's
twenty nine minutes away from four o'clock on ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 5 (21:17):
Station, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic.
Speaker 6 (21:23):
From the UC Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 5 (21:25):
You've see the end fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

family to yours for life, kelseyschev dot Com.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
Evan McPherson season likely over. He's got a groin injury.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
Kate Yorick has been signed by the team after the
Bengals worked out a bunch of kickers today. Cad started
the season with the Commanders, went over two in their
season opening loss to the Buccaneers, and got cut. Two
years ago, he was with the Cleveland Browns and when
twenty four of thirty two, Cade York your new kicker, likely.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
For the rest of the season.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
Bengals and Cowboys on Monday Night Live on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Bengals game plan from six to eight.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Tonight on ESPN fifteen thirty as well, that will slide
the Mark Stubbs Radio Show to Fox Sports thirteen sixty
and following that'll be the Mark Pope Radio Show on
Fox Sports thirteen sixty. Kentucky coming off a loss last
night on the road against Clemson seventy to sixty six,
a game that to me kind of felt it was
(22:33):
a later night tip. It kind of felt a little
bit like the UC game from last night. I watched
Victor lock In play twenty two minutes, hit four block shots,
offering rim protection. Filled the statue nine six couple of assists,
four block shots. Kentucky falls to seven and one. Cyclones
played tonight against Fort Wayne. I believe it's pucks and
(22:55):
Pups night at the Arena downtown and John Morossi of
Fox Sports reports the Reds are among the teams interested
in White Sox Ace. Garrett Crochet, your phone calls are
coming up. In a second, maybe more than a second. First,
I want to do this. The UC football season is over.
(23:17):
Bearcats go from five to two to five and seven.
But we turned the page quickly. In that sport early
signing day today, Scott Saderfield a little while ago talked
about his recruiting class.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
Yeah. Sure, you know, obviously excited about today.
Speaker 7 (23:33):
We finally get to get these guys signed up for
a program. You know, we've been recruiting these guys for
a long time and finally officially we can sign them
and talk about about these players. But nineteen total signees
Nino offense, ten on defense, you know, seven guys from
the state of Ohio, Indiana, you know, right close by
and then I think probably did you think about this class?
(23:55):
Probably the biggest thing that we went out after was
was size. You know, I think this class, we think
about eight offensive defensive lineman four and four on each
side of the ball. I think we had twelve players
that are six three or better gonna look more like
big twelve type players. We can think about length and size,
and these guys will obviously, you know, getting to the
program that will fill out.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
A bunch of them will be here in January, you know.
Speaker 7 (24:17):
And at least six months will go through to be
able to change their bodies and in order to prepare
to play next fall. As you think about last year's class,
you know, and we had shoot so many guys that
ended up playing last year fours over nine hundred snaps
out of freshmen. So we will be counting on some
of these guys to come in here and help us
next year and help us play. And you know, I
(24:37):
think this is the model that we want to do.
You know, when you think about signing roughly twenty high
school players every year and end getting into the portal
which will start next week, and you're getting you know,
twelve to fourteen.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
Where you're filling in some gaps.
Speaker 7 (24:49):
So I think that's a good formula to go about
year after year to help stabilize the team but also
bring in some really good players.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
There's not Scott's Sadifield, a littleit of Scott's Stderfield from earlier.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
Today.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Signing Day is obviously a big deal. Signing Day is
obviously very important, and you know, you could still very
much argue the lifeblood of a successful college football program
is going to be a pipeline of players from the
high school ranks who enter the program and stay for
four or five years. It's just in the transfer portal era,
especially when you're still still trying to get the program
(25:27):
back on track, which Scott Saderfield is, it seems insanely
less important.
Speaker 1 (25:34):
The portal's going to open up. Some UC players have
already said, I'm bouncing.
Speaker 2 (25:37):
Who are they bringing in that can help the Bearcats
engineer a significant turnaround in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (25:45):
Because as much as.
Speaker 2 (25:46):
We talked about, well they got to go six and
six in twenty twenty four, they didn't do that.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
That's not going to change the goal for twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Scott Sadderfield has you know, let's be honest, and I
use that caveat every single time when he was hired
at UC, not exactly universally embraced Eight wins in two
years is not going to bring any of those people over.
Speaker 1 (26:10):
The noise is pretty loud about the UC football situation
right now.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
If we're sitting here a year from now talking about
them just getting to a bowl game being shy of eight,
nine wins, maybe more.
Speaker 1 (26:28):
The volume will intensify. And I'm putting it gently.
Speaker 2 (26:31):
Uh A five thirty. We've I've thrown a lot at you.
We've got folks waiting. I'm gonna get to you. We
do have chat not chat Rick Burring booked, and I
want to spend some time with Rick on the Musketeers.
Xavier gets set to take on TCU on the road
tomorrow night. Muski's escaped against South Carolina State on Sunday,
(26:53):
just a couple of days after losing to Michigan. We'll
chat with Rick about that and another loss for NKU.
They go on the road and get beat by the Zips.
Another team shoots over fifty percent. We'll spend some time
on that. When we come back. We're at Turfway Park
Racing and Gaming till six on ESPN fifteen to thirty
Cincinnati Sports station. Joy By the way, we're at Turfway
(27:13):
Park Racing and Gaming rix website Musketeer Report dot com.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
He's part of the Skinny podcast.
Speaker 2 (27:17):
You heard him last night that you're an NKU fan
on the Norris radio call as NKU lost to Akron
up in Akron, and so we have a lot to
talk about with Rick.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
Hi, Rick, what's up?
Speaker 8 (27:30):
Mal?
Speaker 2 (27:31):
You know, I'm just sitting here doing a talk show,
excited to talk to you.
Speaker 8 (27:36):
I'm happy to be here.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
Let's talk more sobering performance for the Musketeers, the loss
that kind of got out of hand at the end
on a neutral floor to Michigan, or the narrow win
and home over South Carolina State.
Speaker 8 (27:50):
Weirdly, I think it was actually the South Carolina State
game because I think it is kind of easy to
look past the Michigan game for the reasons you just gave.
You're on the road, it's your first real road test,
and even since that Xavier game, we've got even more
evidence that Michigan is looking like a pretty difficult team
to match up with. Given there they're two seven footers
(28:12):
one of them being the very skilled Danny Wolf who's
playing the four spot for them, and he really gave
Zavier a lot of trouble. So I think it was
easy to look past that game and say, bad matchup
on the road, that's a one off. They crumbled at
the end of the game. They've got to get a
little bit deeper, get more out of their bench, maybe.
But then you turn around and you see them struggle
to score again against South Carolina State, a team that
(28:35):
has been giving up a lot of easy baskets because
they like to pressure the ball and that leads them
susceptible to easy layups at the rim, wide open threes
on the back end of their defense, and Xavier couldn't
really beat their pressure consistently to get to the easy buckets.
And so I think that's where it became a bit
more sobering for Xavier fans of Oh no, this isn't
just a one off, and this isn't just we played
(28:57):
a bad matchup for us. This is a we have
some real offensive issues going on right now that we
have to work through.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
So let me talk about the Michigan game first, because
you know, it just it felt like their size was
way too much, and they could do things against Xavier
that the Musketeers and Sean Miller had no real answer
for just looking at the roster. How concerning should that
be when you start to talk about TCU or some
of the teams they play in the Big East.
Speaker 8 (29:24):
Yeah, I mean, I think the size of Michigan is
very unique, and that's something that you're not really going
to see replicated by probably anyone else on your schedule.
I mean, you'll have Creighton where you have to go
up against the seven foot shop blocker and Ryan Kolberner
at the rim, but they don't have a second seven
footer playing next to him at the forward spot who's
very skilled and going to challenge you in those ways.
So I think the real concern that I see coming
(29:47):
from the Michigan game and the matchup there was what
Michigan did defensively, because Michigan essentially gambles defensively on the
idea that they're not going to play a lot of
help defense. They want to guard you one on one
and not give up open threes because they're helping off
of your shooters and not giving up easy opportunities because
they want to help. And now they're scrambling all around,
(30:07):
chasing the ball around in the half court. They want
to guard you one on one, be solid, pressure the
ball out the perimeter with their length, and then funnel
your drivers into their length at the rim to block
your shot. And they've really had trouble beating that aggressive
perimeter pressure. You know, obviously with the guys they have now,
they have a lot of shooters, a lot more skilled players,
(30:28):
guys that have come up from the mid major level,
but they haven't really shown anyone that could beat their
man one on one off the dribble. Last year they
had a guy that could do that a little bit
more in Desmond Claude. This year, they obviously haven't proven
to be able to get that done. So I think
that was one of the that was definitely the biggest
concern coming from the Michigan game. And part of the
(30:48):
reason is the big concern is because that's a similar
style of defense to what Cincinnati is going to play
in the Crosstown Shootout. It's similar to what they're going
to see when they play Creighton. There are other teams
in the Big East that play as similar style defense
this where they're going to pressure the ball off the
perimeter and not help off your shooters a lot. So
Zieger has to find a way to counteract.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Then Trey Green comes off the bench and makes those
four huge free throws at the end.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
What's his role when they played good teams.
Speaker 8 (31:16):
Well, that's a really good question. I mean, in that
game it was essentially Ryan Conwell, the best free throw
shooter for Xavier, had fouled out in the game. So
they threw Trey Green into that moment after almost benching
him for most of the second half. And fortunately for them,
he's an extraordinary free throw shooter and he was able
to knock them down. But you know, he's not getting
a lot of minutes in general, and have not been
(31:39):
dealing with foul trouble in that game with Ryan Conwell,
he might not have played much at all. They're also
not playing Dante Maddox Junior hardly at all. The transferred
from Toledos, So they have two guards off their bench
who are talented scorers, but that they don't trust to
do what they need defensively and doing other small things
on the offensive in terms of running the offense and
taking care of the ball and making good decisions to
(32:02):
where they're really just playing about a six man rotation
right now, with Jerome Hunter being their only sub off
the bench.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
You get Sean Miller versus Jamie Dixon in a redo
of an NCAA tournament classic from the late two thousands.
Speaker 1 (32:15):
Is TCU any good here?
Speaker 8 (32:19):
Well, they're struggling a little bit right now. They have
some young guys. They have a brand new team that
they're trying to put together with transfers like a lot
of teams are. And they're ranked eighty second in Ken Palm.
After going four and three to start the season, they
lost each of their last two games, which were at
an MTE in California. Those were the Santa Clara and
Colorado State. They also lost to Michigan, who we were
(32:40):
just talking about Vasier losing too, so you have a
common opponent there. But the thing about this TCU team
that really stands out to me, mo is they're ranked
one hundred and sixty fifth in offensive efficiency, so not
a good scoring team at all. But defensively they're thirty
third in the country. And you know what they do well.
They have big, tough guards that switch on the perimeter
and put a lot of pressure on you and so
(33:00):
exactly what we've been talking about they are struggling with.
I'm sure TCU is watching the film from last two
games and saying, hey, this is a team that fits
what we do, that we match up well against. We
can really make some hay here at home and get
back on the winning side of things. So I think
this is going to be a real challenge.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
Receiver Rick Burning is with this Musketeer Report dot com
color man on NKU radio broadcast. You were there to
watch Tamori Johnson score twenty seven.
Speaker 8 (33:27):
I was.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
I was in studio.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
I came on after you guys, and you were nice
enough to join me from outside the team bus when
NKU lost to the College of Charleston. And you know,
it's it's cliche to say a coach sounds frustrated when
he taught Chat's postgame after a loss, but I felt
like there was, and you would know more than I
a little bit of an edge.
Speaker 1 (33:46):
To Darren Horne after that game, he sounded perturbed.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
I can't I can't imagine last night did anything to
sweetness move.
Speaker 8 (33:55):
Yeah. No, I think he wasn't happy with it. Now,
in a lot of ways, I think they've played better
Acron than they did at College And Charles, did you
know Akron is a team that's very talented on the offensive.
Then they shoot really well from three, and they had
a guy in Tabari Johnson go off for twenty seven
points on eleven shots last night.
Speaker 4 (34:11):
He was four of six from three.
Speaker 8 (34:12):
So he was the guy that came into the game
not shooting all that well. They knew he could shoot,
they were paying attention to him, but it was kind
of the game plan to focus a little bit more
on some of their other guys and hope Tavari Johnson
didn't go off in the way that he did. You know,
the fact that NKU was able to score on their
end of the floor scored seventy three points. Typically, with
the way they pay play defense, that's going to be
enough for them to win, especially on the road when
(34:34):
they get into Horizon League play. So I think the
showing at Akron was much better than the showing at Charleston.
But the problem is, and the reason Darren Horn probably
is frustrated mo is they continuously are doing things in
these games for extended spurts where they're shooting themselves in
the foot and giving themselves no chance to win. In
the Charleston game, they were down by seventeen points at
one point in the first half, nineteen points in the
(34:56):
second half. In this Acron game, they were down by
seventeen points at one point first half, and a lot
of it has to do with things like they just
refused to rebound for long stretches. You know, they were
out rebounded in this game thirty nine to twenty three
in total rebounds, a sixteen rebound differential, and that led
to twenty second chance points for Akron in this game.
(35:16):
If you just hold that reasonably in check and kind
of match them there, it's a completely different ballgame. So
I think that's where Darren Horn is probably the most frustrated,
is the fact that his team keeps shooting itself in
the foot. Aside from the Bellerman game over the weekend
where they played really well and put forty four minutes together,
a lot of these other games they've had chances and
had some good spurts of playing well, but just not
(35:38):
for an entire game.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
Well said, Thank you as always, We'll talk next week.
Speaker 8 (35:43):
Thanks Bill.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
That's our guy, Rick Boring, Musketeerreport dot Com, NKU Radio,

got a confession to make after watching Hard Knocks last night,
and let's just imagine a Bengals Browns scenario a little
bit later on. But you know that entire first hour
I babbled, I meandered. I had on Rick boring. He
(37:10):
did neither of those things. And we had folks waiting
on hold that were very patient. And now it's their turn.
Hopefully they have been waiting and they haven't hung up.
Bob and Bowling Green, You're on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (37:23):
Evening, were good, afternoon. Well, hey Bob, how you doing.
Speaker 9 (37:30):
I'm good. I would never hang up on you.
Speaker 1 (37:32):
Bow Well, it's not hanging up on me.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
I mean, it's you know, you're waiting, and then you
know you got to do other stuff and you stop waiting.
That doesn't bother me when people do that, But I'm
grateful that you've chosen to wait in here.
Speaker 1 (37:44):
You are.
Speaker 9 (37:46):
My wife is in London and I'm babysitting three dogs.
So believe me, you're You're the highlight of my day
so far.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
London London like the UK or London Kentucky?
Speaker 8 (37:59):
No love like the UK.
Speaker 1 (38:01):
Okay, very good? She run off? Or really no, no, she's.
Speaker 9 (38:07):
She's back tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
Oh very good.
Speaker 10 (38:10):
Right.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
You know I've been to London, Kentucky and London in
the UK, both are lovely.
Speaker 9 (38:16):
Which one do you like better?
Speaker 2 (38:18):
You know, my family's from London in Kentucky, but London, London,
England is my.
Speaker 1 (38:24):
Favorite city that I've ever been to.
Speaker 10 (38:27):
Really.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
Yeah, In fact, this will tell you how much I
loved London. The food is atrocious, It's awful. The second
time I went, I packed an entire suitcase full of
granola bars and Pringles potato chips, and yet I loved
everything else about it.
Speaker 1 (38:43):
It is still my favorite city. I love to eat.
The food was awful, and I still loved London.
Speaker 9 (38:52):
Well, I you know what, from everything I've heard, I
think I think she feels much the same way.
Speaker 10 (38:57):
So hey, I.
Speaker 9 (38:59):
Wanted to get in a little bit. I was going
to talk about the basketball game last night, but when
I listened to Scott Tierfield, do you do you remember
a guy named bag Dad Bob.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
In the Iraq War? Yes, the spokesperson for the Iraqi
ar Yes.
Speaker 10 (39:15):
Yes, yes, do you.
Speaker 9 (39:17):
Whenever I hear Scott now, I have flashbacks of him.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
Why.
Speaker 9 (39:24):
Well, it's almost like a guy that kind of knows
that things aren't going great, and you know it's probably
not going to turn out well on the end, but
he's gonna try and make you feel good all the
way till the end.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
Well, I mean, you know, I expect every coach in
the in America, I'm sure gave some version of that
press conference today and they're all going to say really
good things about the recruits coming in.
Speaker 1 (39:53):
I understand that that.
Speaker 2 (39:54):
Particular media availability is more about signing day and less
about the overarching direction of the But I'm sure that
Scott understands the disaffection that he is dealing with with
the fan base. I don't know if he is skeptical
(40:14):
as to whether or not he can get it fixed,
but I feel like most UC.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
Fans are right now.
Speaker 2 (40:21):
He would admit that skepticism is deserved until there's tangible
proof that this is going in the right direction, and
a five and seven finish after a five and two
start with the offense doing what it did late in
the season doesn't provide much tangible evidence that this is
moving in the right direction.
Speaker 9 (40:38):
Well, Mo, you remember this, I think, because if I
remember correctly, I think you were one of the guys
that said this that you weren't worried when Luke Fickle
left because there would be great coach of standing in
line to coach at the University of Cincinnati when he left, Well, I.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
Don't think I put it that way.
Speaker 2 (41:00):
I said I thought it was a good job, and
I thought it was then, and I think it is now.
I think it's it's over the course of the last
decade and a half, it's been proven how good the
job is. I think there's been a renewed commitment to
football that you see. They've now entered the Big twelve.
We've had a coach who has competed for a national
championship and you could use UC to get paid elsewhere,
(41:22):
and they paid pretty handsomely.
Speaker 1 (41:25):
Go ahead.
Speaker 9 (41:25):
The practice facility looks fabulous.
Speaker 1 (41:28):
Yeah, so I still think. I still think. I still
think it's a really good job.
Speaker 2 (41:35):
What I think is interesting about the job right now
Scott Scott Sadafield would not have had that press conference
today if they were moving on from him. But I
think this is going to be a very light year
in terms of coaching changes, which if if you're a
school looking for the hottest name out there, the time
to do it is when there's less competition for that name.
(41:57):
I don't think there would be much competition this offseason,
which means next year, there's probably gonna be a whole
bunch of schools, and I hope to god you see
as in a position where they've turned it around and
there's no reason to be looking for a head coach.
But next year, you know, year to year, one year
when the cycle is light, then the next year the
cycle tends to be heavy. It feels like that the
carousel is relatively light this season, which if you want
(42:22):
to make the argument that they should go ahead and
pull the trigger and pay the money for his buyout,
one of the arguments you can make is, look, they'd
be at the front of the line because the line's
not very big. But Scott is coming back, whether folks
like it or not, and from my perspective, I certainly
hope that he does better. But Bob, I think it's
a good job. It's not a job without you know, issues,
(42:44):
It's not a job.
Speaker 1 (42:45):
That's you know, as maybe as good as some in
the Big Twelve.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
But I think relatively speaking, the success that some coaches
have had there, the movement to the Big.
Speaker 1 (42:57):
Twelve, recruiting pipelines in this part of.
Speaker 2 (43:01):
The country being what they are, Yeah, I think it's
I think it's a really good job.
Speaker 9 (43:08):
No, I no, I I agree with what you just said,
and and believe me, I like you. I hope he
does turn it around.
Speaker 10 (43:16):
But I just I don't know.
Speaker 9 (43:18):
There were a lot of things that I saw the
last half of the season that that made me wonder.
Speaker 1 (43:24):
I think they under.
Speaker 2 (43:26):
Really quick, Bob. I think I think they underperformed relative
to their talent. I and Tony Pika said this too.
I think they have players on that team that would
get playing time on on better teams in the Big Twelve.
To have gone backwards the way they did offensively is alarming.
(43:47):
I can't put it any other way. It's it's it's
really damning. It's really alarming. And I think it's going
to be fresh in our our heads as we turn
the page the next season. And I think it's going
to be fresh in our heads even if they get
off to a good start next season. There they have
eight wins in two years, and they went backwards in
the second half of the season this year, and and
(44:08):
that's that's not going to speak that that's not going
to speak well about this particular head coach.
Speaker 9 (44:15):
The quarterback's got some talent, though. I hope, I hope
they wind up sticking with that guy.
Speaker 2 (44:21):
Yeah, the thoughts on the game last night, Bob.
Speaker 9 (44:26):
Well, what I was going to say was, I think
one of their biggest issues, well two of them really.
First off, they they have got to shoot foul shots better.
And it's just it amazes me that year after year
we just we we seem to be near the bottom
all the time in that regard and now I can't
(44:48):
quite understand why. But and the other thing is this,
I'm what really worries me about this team more than anything.
And believe me, I think it's as far as I
can see, they're loaded everywhere except the center positions. Scares
me just simply because I don't think these has much
(45:09):
of an offensive game. And Page although I think he
could develop into a decent player, and I think he's
got a decent I know the guy shoots foul shots well,
But I just that's the only spot that really worries man.
That's the place where I think they could get beaten
(45:31):
by a lot of teams that have really good big men.
Speaker 2 (45:35):
Yes, except I don't know how many of those teams
are out there.
Speaker 1 (45:40):
Right, everything you said I agree with. I think.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
Look as these bandago brings things to the table. He
didn't really last night, but I think he's a good
rim protector. I think he's moving better because he's healthier.
I think he's a little bit better with the ball
in his hands. You can certainly throw lobs to him,
and I think they have a better lob throwing team.
But he's not a guy you're gonna dump it down
to the block too and let him go to work
one on one. That is just not gonna happen. And
(46:04):
he's not a great individual post defender, and I don't
think they have anybody who is. I think it's fair
to wonder how many teams can really exploit that weakness.
Certainly there are some, and there certainly are some in
the Big twelve. Are there enough? Are there enough to
make that a huge, glaring, sort of season shattering weakness.
(46:27):
I'm not gonna say yes or no, but I think
it's a fair question.
Speaker 9 (46:31):
Hey, Moll, like always man, good talk to good talking Bob.
Speaker 2 (46:35):
Good to hear your voice, So hip your wife travels
back to the States safely. The free throw shooting thing
six for eleven last night. I have this on a
piece of paper at my desk back at the radio station.
I did this midway through the season last year, and
I don't have the figures committed to my memory, but
I looked back. I think I was able to find
I think I was able to go back to two
(46:55):
thousand or two thousand and one. I think I was
able to go back to the two thousand and two
thousand and one season and maybe the ninety nine.
Speaker 1 (47:01):
Two thousand season.
Speaker 2 (47:02):
But basically this century, UC has had a top one
hundred team in free throw shooting. I swear I still
have this at my desk. I sat there one day
and did like did the research, which was not a
really fun exercise as a Bearcat fan. It was after
a game last year where they did not shoot free
throw as well. And it is remarkable regardless of who
(47:27):
the coach has been, regardless of who the players have been.
Speaker 1 (47:29):
During on some very.
Speaker 2 (47:31):
Good teams that had NBA guys and All League guys,
I think this century they've only been in the top
one hundred, and I think it was one to O
two because they had Steve Logan, who was a great
free throw shooter and was awesome at getting to the
free throw line. I think that was the year they
were ninety fifth in the country in free throw shooting percentage,
which certainly isn't great. Beyond that, there's in a lot
(47:53):
of those years they were sub two hundred. I'm not
on the rest of the week after today. I have
that on a piece of paper, leave at my desk
and I'll read it. But I did it last year
that in this century they have not finished in the
top one hundred in the country in free throw shooting
except for one season when they were ninety fifth. They
haven't been very good at all this year. It is
(48:17):
sixteen minutes after four o'clock. J Had Brendel joins his
next word Turfway Park Racing and Gaming Here till six
o'clock on day one of live racing on ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 11 (48:25):
Station, Cincinnati's ESPN FIXT Football in the NATI brought to
you in part by modern office methods on the official
home of the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (48:39):
So it's football Inninati, which means, I guess we have
to do football first. With Chad Brendel, Bearcat Journal dot Com,
let's work backwards. Today is signing Day, early signing day
to the Bearcats have a good signing class.
Speaker 1 (48:49):
Chat.
Speaker 10 (48:53):
It's a lot of the traits that they're looking for.
You know, I my brain goes back to year one
in the Big Twelve when we all looked out on
the field and said, these guys don't look like those guys.
They are still in the mode of fixing that, which
I mean what they had nineteen players, sixteen of them
(49:16):
are six foot or taller, a lot of guys along
the offensive and defensive lines. You know, you've got four
offensive linemen, four defensive linemen, two linebackers, and two tight ends.
So really, you know, twelve players that they expect to
kind of play and make an impact in and around
the line of scrimmage, which I think was absolutely a
(49:38):
focus and I think really kind of that's where high.
Speaker 8 (49:41):
School recruiting is going.
Speaker 10 (49:43):
Mo Like, you can go find wide receivers and corners
and you know, running backs and skill guys in the
transfer portal. Do you go start trying to find left
tackles in the transfer portal? And you better have a
very rich donor that is looking to to enhance your
offensive line.
Speaker 1 (50:03):
All right, so signing day is good?
Speaker 2 (50:07):
How bad have they been hitting the portal so far?
Even though it hasn't opened yet.
Speaker 10 (50:12):
Not too bad. I mean, you know, there's a couple
of guys that you know, you probably I would like
to have kept around for depth purposes, but I haven't
seen anybody. You know, maybe Jonathan Harder. But here's what
I think was telling on Jonathan Harder. Well, he was
the first guy when they needed a guard. He came
(50:34):
in and they used him a little bit, but then
for the rest of the season they didn't go back
to him like they they started using Evan Tengestahl as
their number one guard off of the bench when they
needed a fill in. That usually tells you that the
guy that they used first isn't wasn't what they were
(50:54):
necessarily looking for. So, you know, I don't think that
was too big of a deal. You did.
Speaker 1 (51:00):
You did lose.
Speaker 10 (51:01):
Some some walk on punters and kickers, which could end
up being important around here. You know, you never know
on that front. But uh, nobody at least to this
point that has you know, raised an eyebrow, raised a
red flag. You know that that that's kind of where
(51:23):
you hope to be in this point is you're you're
making room with bottom of the roster players to go
out in the portal and add middle to top of the
roster players.
Speaker 1 (51:32):
What happened to the offense in the second half of
the season.
Speaker 10 (51:35):
I wish I had a great answer for that mode.
I think it's a combination of one Britain Sowersby didn't
play as well. Uh two, I don't know how many
of their wide receivers were the guys that just knew
how to get open. I mean it felt like, you know,
(51:58):
you you put four or five games on tape of
Brendan Sowsby being really good, and then after that opposing
defenses started watching Tate started figuring this offense out, and
it felt like they were way too easy to just
take away what they wanted to do. And that was
(52:18):
glaring because the run game was still there. They just
didn't have you know, they essentially were working from five
to fifteen yards downfield. They couldn't throw it over the top.
They didn't. They don't throw a lot of the short
stuff that you see a lot of teams throw now.
So the opposing defense could drop eight. But it wasn't
just that they dropped eight. It's that they dropped eight
(52:40):
and only had to worry about ten yards of space.
And that's a bad place to be if you're trying
to throw the football because they just have eight guys standing,
you know, in those spaces that you're trying to get open.
I won They've got to get a little bit more
playmaking down the field, which is a major major issue.
(53:02):
To stretch that zoned out, To stretch the defense out
and find some room over the middle. It's one of
the things Brendan Sooresby does best, and they just weren't
able to do it the second half of the season.
I would seriously, you know, if I'm Scott Saderfield, I'm
looking and saying I'm new to the Big twelve. This
three high safety kind of zone look is very prevalent
(53:25):
in the Big twelve. Why because Iowa State went to it.
They've had the best defense in the country for nine years.
Everybody's kind of their best defense in the conference. Sorry,
it's not country best defense in the conference for nine years.
Well then everybody's going to start copying that. You need
to start figuring out, Okay, what do we do as
an offense, especially a passing offense, that can capitalize on
(53:47):
this defense. Because they weren't able to do it over
the final seven or eight games, and it was glare.
Speaker 1 (53:53):
I asked you this.
Speaker 2 (53:54):
I was watching the therapy session on Saturday night because
I needed it and I asked you this, and I
knew what the answer was. But like Brendan Soorsby in
the first half of the season was good. He still
has years of eligibility. He's still growing into the role.
I like a lot of things about Brendan Sorosby. I
have seen better quarterbacks go into a competition the summer
(54:17):
after their season. Now, much of that before the modern
reality of college sports kicked in where guys cost money. Uh,
should he have the job unchallenged in twenty twenty five?
Speaker 10 (54:31):
Here's the question, though, do they have the money to
go out and pay for another quarterback that they're going
to bring in to challenge him? Because if not, do
you think Samas Jones is ready to challenge Brendan Soersby.
If he's not, then I don't know where this quarterback
competition comes from. And also very difficulty. Why are quarterbacks
(54:54):
in the portal because they're not playing at the school
that they're at, going out and getting a quarter back
and selling him on we're bringing you in to challenge
our incumbent starter that we spend a lot of money
on in nil What quarterback does that if the reason
he's in the portal is looking for an easier path
(55:16):
to playing time than the place that he was at.
So I think it's a good question. I just don't
know how in the current landscape you're able unless they're
already on the roster are how do you go out
and bring a quarterback in with the knowledge that they're
going to have to beat a guy that the program
(55:37):
believes in. That makes it, you know, a very difficult
needle to thread.
Speaker 1 (55:44):
Chad Brendel Bearkat Journal dot Com. What was.
Speaker 2 (55:48):
What was most sobering about what happened last night in Philadelphia?
Speaker 10 (55:54):
Boy, that's a that's kind of a loaded question. I
think it's for me probably that Villanova was so efficient
at taking Cincinnati out of their offense. You know, I
would highly recommend it. It changes the way you watch
(56:16):
these games. We do a breakdown show with Chrys Lapour
called the Bearcap Breakdown that gives you a really good
look of like, this is what Cincinnati wants to do
on offense. These are their offensive sets. This is how
they get siemas open, and this is how they get
jizzled downhill, and watching that game last night, Villanova just
(56:39):
like stunted what they wanted to accomplish out of their offense.
And when that happens, the end result is what looks
like standing around. And when it looks like they're standing around,
the ball's not moving, the ball's not popping. They were
doing some switching on you know, ball screens, but they
were also doing some stuff on the backside where Cincinnati
(57:01):
likes to run staggers and double screens and slips, and
Villanova looked to be a step ahead of them in
most of those instances. And guess what, you're gonna play
great defenses in the Big twelve. If Villanova that easily
took you out of your stuff, took you out of
what you wanted to do, that gives me a little
(57:23):
bit of pause for the effectiveness and the efficiency of
this offense long term, because we kind of fell in
love with watching good offense over six games, didn't we
know very much?
Speaker 12 (57:36):
We did?
Speaker 10 (57:36):
We did not. We did not get to see that
last night. And then credit to Kyle Neptune, which I
might be the first person that's ever said that, just
when it felt like okay, since Villanova changed up how
they defend it through Cincinnati off then Cincinnati started to
figure it out and they immediately went to that like
matchup zone. Look that again through Cincinnati af balance, and
(58:01):
then they again had to kind of recover. So that
concerns me that Villanova Villanova was really able to take
them out of their offense as easily as they did.
Speaker 2 (58:13):
Did did we find out that there are some guys
deeper in the rotation that you maybe can't play in
games like that?
Speaker 10 (58:22):
Yeah, I mean I cautioned everybody loves depth in the offseason,
though I cautioned that, look, the top five six seven
guys are the top five to sixty seven guys for
a reason, and that's you know. Now, look guys like
Tyler Betsy and aaronton page, they're going to get better
(58:46):
with more reps. So the answer for those two guys
specifically isn't simply you can't play them, but it is
that you have to play them through some some stuff.
What's not fair, even if it was just it to
like a two and a half minute stretch, it's not
fair to them to have them on the floor with
(59:06):
Dayde Thomas, Connor, Hickman and Josh reed. If you're going
to work those guys in, you need to make sure
you're doing it when you have the veteran guys out there,
the top of the rotation guys, so it's not as
glaring that you have your back of the rotation guys
on the floor. There were some challenges with that last night.
(59:29):
Wes talked about it in the post game. Some of
it was just bad luck. I guess in the way
that like when the clock was stopped, you know, you
take out, for example, you take out Jizzle with you know,
just under fourteen minutes to go in the second half,
you're trying to get him a couple minutes to rest,
and then at the under twelve time out you want
(59:51):
to bring him back in. Well, then the under twelve
time out goes to almost ten minutes, so there's an
extra two minutes that you're playing with that group without
jizzl on the floor. Maybe you take a time out there.
I don't know what exactly the answer is. Maybe you
just say we can't put those five on the floor together.
So if you're taking Seamos out, then Gigsel has to
(01:00:12):
go back in or Dylan has to go back in.
But I you know, the depth still needs to be developed.
And guess what Gizzl Seemoss, Dylan Mitchell like, those guys
are at the top of the roster for a reason.
And I don't care how good your bench is. That
they're not better than your best guys, so you're gonna
dip a little bit when you take them off the floor.
Speaker 1 (01:00:33):
How close the skillings.
Speaker 10 (01:00:37):
Good question? I mean, I he to my knowledge, he
has not come back to Pice like full practice yet.
He's been doing some shooting and some conditioning and working
his way back. Generally, once they come back to practice,
it's a week or so, so you know, if he's
going to be back in time for the shootout, he's
(01:00:59):
gonna have to be back in practice probably sometime at
the end of this week or at the worst early
early next week to be ready for next Saturday. So
they're they're in a tough and then and then you're
gonna risk Are you just throwing him back out there
for his first game in the gross Town Shootout? The
(01:01:19):
answer is probably yes, because he's you know, maybe your
most impactful player. But I mean, I'm guessing maybe Xavier
and then Dayton is I would guess a little bit
more likely at least.
Speaker 1 (01:01:36):
All right, you're on for me tomorrow, correct.
Speaker 10 (01:01:39):
I am on for you tomorrow. I'm work shopping something though. Yeah,
I'm gonna try it out on the podcast tonight to
see what kind of reaction it gets. But uh, comparing
like the way that these rocks, like what we saw
last night from Villanova, which to music stuff, which, like
you know, Villanova last night was like a rock band
(01:02:02):
with like a big time lead singer. I don't know
what that would be anymore. Are they're rock bands anymore?
But like Villanova's like the Rolling Stones right like Eric
Dixon was Mick Jagger and good supporting cast around him,
but they had The Bearcats right now are like a
boy band. They're like in Sync without Justin Timberlake, and
(01:02:25):
nobody wants to see n Sync without Justin Timberlake.
Speaker 1 (01:02:27):
I'm not sure I want to see him right now
with him, But yeah, I understand your point.
Speaker 10 (01:02:33):
Maybe we'll talk more about that tomorrow. I don't know,
but looking forward to getting ready for TCU and Xavier tomorrow,
that should be a good one. And is it am
my contract contractually obliged to talk about the Bengals or canda,
skip it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:49):
Do whatever you want. You can do legitimately whatever you want.
Speaker 10 (01:02:57):
Don't say that. Don't seem I was supposed to be
filling in today. Yeah, and then you know, an opportunity
for you to make money came up, so I got
the day off.
Speaker 1 (01:03:09):
Yeh, work backs.
Speaker 10 (01:03:10):
No, it was a signing day.
Speaker 1 (01:03:12):
Yeah, no, that was that was That was my fault.
Speaker 2 (01:03:15):
I neglected to tell the person in charge of the
schedule that I am indeed working on December fourth. So here,
here we are. If you know what I'm doing. You know,
I don't really, really, really really want to be working
today if you know what I'm doing tomorrow. So but
I'm here here because I'm climbing out.
Speaker 10 (01:03:34):
On the Christmas party. I missed out on the Christmas party.
Speaker 1 (01:03:37):
You and me both all right? Take care of your dog. Thanks,
Thank mouth tap Chad.
Speaker 2 (01:03:41):
Brendel bearkhat journal dot com. It's a twenty three. We
are late twenty three from five. We're a turfway park
racing and gaming on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 13 (01:03:52):
You've been listening to a football in thenetti on the
official home of the Bengals Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 9 (01:04:00):
Seen some.
Speaker 2 (01:04:03):
We are late for this put sports head lines thanks
to Kelsey Chevroli home of lifetime powertrain protection guaranteed credit
approval from their family to yours for life at Kelsey
Chef dot com. Eda McPherson's twenty twenty four season unfortunately
likely over.
Speaker 1 (01:04:20):
He has been.
Speaker 2 (01:04:20):
Placed on IR with a groin injury, and the Bengals
have signed Kad York. Look, man, did you think they
were gonna go find Justin Tucker in his prime off
the waiver wire or as a free agent? Like I've
seen some folks on social media who are mad about this.
Who did you want that's out there? Like there's like
(01:04:41):
this traveling group of bad kickers. Kate York's had one
full season in the NFL with the Browns in twenty
twenty two.
Speaker 1 (01:04:48):
It wasn't great.
Speaker 2 (01:04:49):
He started the season with the Commanders this year, went
over two in the first game they got rid of him. Like,
I mean, there are a lot of things to be
mad about as it relates to the Bengals. The replacement
for the kicker for is not one for a bunch
of games that really don't mean anything, not one of them.
More Tonight, Dan and Lapp will break down the Bengals
kicking situation on Bengals Game Plan six to eight tonight
(01:05:11):
live on ESPN fifteen thirty, which will slide the UK
Coaches Show doubleheader on Fox Sports on ESPN fifteen thirty two,
Fox Sports thirteen sixty, the Mark Stube Show tonight at six,
and then The Mark Pope Show tonight at seven o'clock.
Kentucky losing last night for the first time this season,
falling to Clemson. John Morossia Fox Sports says the Reds
(01:05:33):
are among the teams kicking the tires. If you will,
does anybody actually kick tires? You go buy a car
kick the tires. Reds are reportedly among the teams kicking
the tires on White Sox Ace, Garrett Crochet.
Speaker 1 (01:05:47):
And the Cyclones play tonight at home against Fort Wayne.
You can bring your dog to the game, So do
that if you have a dog.
Speaker 2 (01:05:53):
Any like hockey sixteen away from five o'clock on ESPN
fifteen thirty on the Reds thing, the Garrett Crochet thing,
I'm I'm in. I want to know just making that
trade preclude them from making others and finding bats. And
number two, what's it going to cost? But I'm on
board with going all in, and I'm okay trading prospects.
(01:06:13):
I'm I'm no longer interested, and I haven't really been
in a while and talking about well, you know what,
what about I don't I want to win.
Speaker 1 (01:06:20):
The World Series this year?
Speaker 2 (01:06:21):
Like this whole rebuild thing they're doing only really works
if it results in them playing for something beyond third
place or doing something more than just having the occasional
above five hundred season. So go get me guys who
can help me now, and if that costs me down
the road, so be it. We talked about the Jesse
Winker stuff that was on social media yesterday, and we
(01:06:42):
we did a poll question at Moegger. Our pole questions
are a service of United Heartland Insurance. Go to uhi
ands dot com. One of the four pole questions was
should the Rights acquire Jesse Winker? Fifty nine percent of
you just over half say hard pass on that one.
Speaker 8 (01:07:01):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:07:01):
I gave three options. Yes, to start every.
Speaker 2 (01:07:04):
Day, be as a bench bat see hard pass. Do
you remember how bad the Reds bench was last year?
I am not interested in Jesse Winker as a starting
left fielder. He can't hit lefties. He's not fast, he's
a liability with the glove. There's a limited amount of pop.
Like I'm looking for players who at their position are
(01:07:28):
top five in the National League. Jesse Winker is not
one of them. You're not gonna get eight of those guys.
Could I have one? I'm not sure the Reds have any.
Maybe Elidela Cruze. But last year we watched this whole
line of Jacob Herdabies and Mike Ford Connor Caple. This year,
they were desperate to go get Santiago Espanol right before
(01:07:51):
opening Day. Not to their credit and his credit, he
proved to be pretty valuable. Their death got tested last
year and it failed. The Milwaukee Brewers death got tested
last year and they succeeded.
Speaker 1 (01:08:04):
We talked about this all season long.
Speaker 2 (01:08:05):
For the folks who wanted to make excuses about the injuries, Well,
how about the teams that figured out a way to
get through injury.
Speaker 1 (01:08:11):
Because they had depth. The Reds need to go to.
Speaker 2 (01:08:14):
Spring training and they certainly need to start the season
with enough major league players on their roster that can
fill depth roles. I'm one thousand percent on board with
Jesse Winker being one of those guys. Maybe Jesse Winker
is looking for a starting spot and it's not a
right fit. Whatever like that is a They obviously need starters,
(01:08:34):
but it ain't just that.
Speaker 1 (01:08:36):
When and not if, when.
Speaker 2 (01:08:38):
Their depth gets tested, can they do something besides call
up the next version of Mike Ford.
Speaker 1 (01:08:47):
So I am the.
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
Exact opposite of a hard pass on Jesse Winker. I
want dudes who can provide depth. I want starters. I
want a listeners. Be cool to have an all star two.
Maybe one merges from within, but don't ignore that bench
because it caught up to him last year. Thirteen away
(01:09:09):
from five o'clock, I've got a confession to make, and
I'll make it. Coming up, We're a Turfway Park racing
and game on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 1 (01:09:18):
Manford's floating the golden at bat rule that he.
Speaker 2 (01:09:23):
I'm sure as hearing the resistance to, and the Reds
might trade for Garrett Crochet.
Speaker 1 (01:09:29):
That's what's happening in baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:09:31):
A couple away from five o'clock, ESPN fifteen thirty, Richard
Skinner's gonna join us on the Bengals coming up at
five twenty. I do have a Bengals Brown scenario. I
want to I want to envision. Let's pretend it's when's
that game the twenty second. Let's pretend it's December twenty
second at about three fifteen in the afternoon.
Speaker 1 (01:09:50):
We'll do that coming up in just about ten minutes.
Speaker 2 (01:09:53):
Bengals were featured on Hard Knocks last night, which is
done in season and features all four AFC North team.
I love the show Hard Knocks. I don't know that
I use it to learn anything. I you know, especially
during the season. We knew they were gonna show obviously
Bengals v. Steelers the lead up to the game, and
(01:10:14):
then they were gonna feature the game itself.
Speaker 1 (01:10:16):
We know how the game unfolded.
Speaker 2 (01:10:19):
I just as as a sports fan as an entertainment vehicle.
There are a few things done better. It's shot beautifully,
and there are sports fans among us, myself one of
them who enjoy.
Speaker 1 (01:10:34):
Unrehearsed stuff behind the scenes.
Speaker 2 (01:10:37):
Much of what we see on non game days is
basically rehearsed or canned or very uninteresting. I don't know
that Hard Knocks last night, if you had a chance
to watch, it was filled with a lot of really
interesting stuff, maybe beyond Joe Burrow buying the Batmobile. I
just think it's good television. I just think it's good television.
(01:10:58):
You know, if it's not your thing, it's not your thing.
I don't know that we learned anything about the Bengals
or the Steelers last night.
Speaker 1 (01:11:04):
But here's my confession. I'm kind of a sucker for
Mike Tomlin.
Speaker 2 (01:11:09):
I'm no Steelers fan by any stretch of the imagination,
and we sort of roll our eyes sometimes at the
constant reminding that he's never had a losing season and
he's a coach that I've often said, like, man, if
I was a Steelers fan, it would drive me nuts,
because I've often felt like he needs the director of
common sense.
Speaker 1 (01:11:26):
He's had some game management.
Speaker 2 (01:11:28):
Gaffes, but like you watched that a little bit last night,
Mike Tomlin and the Steelers are doing this reluctantly. I'm
not even gonna do the lazy comparison to Zach Taylor.
I think it'd be fun as hell to play.
Speaker 1 (01:11:41):
For that guy.
Speaker 2 (01:11:43):
Sorry, I'm not supposed to feel that way. There's there's
just something about him and watching him in some unrehearsed
moments that I like. If that makes me a bad
fan whatever. I like Mike Tomlin a couple away from
five o'clock. More on the UC loss from last night.
We haven't really tapped in the Kentucky's game against Clemson yet.
Speaker 1 (01:12:06):
Richard Skinner's going to join us. We have to talk
about Evan McPherson.
Speaker 2 (01:12:09):
I guess his twenty twenty four season is over, which
is a bummer for him. Kate York is now the kicker,
and let's envision a Bengals Browns scenario. In just about
ten minutes, we're at Turfway Park racing and gaming on
ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 5 (01:12:26):
Station Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

Even better, come on out to Turfway Park Racing and Gaming.
Get a nice cold bud light, hang out. First night
of live racing. We've got games, we've got TVs, we've
got betting kiosks, we've got food. My guy Rodney Simpson
made a plate of onion rings which looked awesome. Can't
eat those until tomorrow. Really anything you could ask for.
(01:14:28):
Good bourbon collection. Turfway Park Racing and Gaming, very hospitable hosts.
We thank them for having us. We are here until
six o'clock tonight. Richard Skinner's gonna join us, coming up
in just about ten minutes. We have a more on
the UC game from last night that we'll get to
the Reds in their pursuit I guess of Garrett Crochet
and of players who aren't Mike Ford. We'll spend time
(01:14:51):
on that a little bit later on. We tapped to
this a little bit yesterday and this has kind of
become I think, the for lack of a better way
of putting it, topic doujore in bengalsm if you will,
Bengals are gonna play some games here in the coming
weeks that at least for them in the standings don't
mean anything.
Speaker 1 (01:15:11):
Now they're still mathematically alive.
Speaker 2 (01:15:13):
Let's be honest, they need a lot to happen, including
them winning all of their games.
Speaker 1 (01:15:19):
To make the postseason.
Speaker 2 (01:15:20):
So if not on Monday Night, they're gonna play games
this year that are inconsequential. And obviously there's draft considerations,
and I am I'm.
Speaker 1 (01:15:35):
Not advocating tanking.
Speaker 2 (01:15:36):
By the way, like tanking is, it's implying that everybody
involved is trying not to win. I don't expect that,
you know, I think we saw firsthand here five years
ago how hard it is to tank, because the day
the Bengals clinched the number one overall pick, with that
(01:15:57):
loss to the Miami Dolphins December twenty second, twenty nineteen,
we saw how hard the players played. Players care too much,
coaches care too much to tank. I am one million
percent on board with the players on the field for
the Bengals trying to win, playing hard.
Speaker 1 (01:16:16):
Coaching to win. That's what they should do.
Speaker 2 (01:16:20):
But I am also a million percent on board with
protecting the investment. Let's make those words stand out now
that we're entering this phase of the season where the
games aren't gonna matter. And again, I know Monday night,
mathematically the Bengals have an opportunity to stay alive in
the postseason.
Speaker 1 (01:16:39):
Hunt.
Speaker 2 (01:16:39):
I have no issue with playing anybody, but I brought
this up yesterday. Had a Pole Question fifty seven screed
with me. The moment the Bengals no longer have a chance,
I guess is Joe Burrow is going to play. There
are too many games remaining in the regular season. He's
gonna want to play. Maybe there's something statistic he's trying
(01:17:01):
to chase Jamar Chase might be trying to chase down
the wide receiver triple Crown. He has a better chance
of getting it if Joe Burrow is out there. But
there are three words that I will bring up every
time this topic comes up. Protect the investment. I will
(01:17:24):
never take any issue with a team, a coach, an owner,
even a player who prioritizes those three words. Hear them,
Repeat them if you want, but remember them over the
(01:17:44):
coming weeks.
Speaker 1 (01:17:47):
Protect the investment.
Speaker 2 (01:17:53):
There is no bigger, better, or more important investment in
the history three of Cincinnati sports than Joe Burrow.
Speaker 1 (01:18:04):
Protect the investment.
Speaker 2 (01:18:07):
Now, some will say, well, the Bengals are going to
play some games that could impact other teams making the postseason,
or they could play spoiler when they play the Broncos.
The Bengals have no obligation to anybody else in the NFL.
They have an obligation to themselves, and the primary obligation
is to protect the investment. I am one million percent
(01:18:32):
on board with the minute. The game's carrying no meaning
putting Joe Burrow on the bench, by.
Speaker 1 (01:18:37):
The way, he probably won't like it. He's also an adult.
Speaker 2 (01:18:41):
He can understand what they're trying to do, which is
protect the investment. Just imagine this man. Bengals are playing
the Browns. That game seems like it's likely to not
mean anything in the standings. Bengals Browns December twenty second
and two teams going nowhere. And Joe Burrow is out
(01:19:04):
there and he suffers an injury. That's always sobering, right
like it always stinks to see the starting quarterback come
out of the game. Any injury is bad, but it's
one thing that the injury occurs within the context of
the game, where you know what injuries are a part
of it. Everybody's trying to win the game, matters, The
game has consequence, there's a lot riding on it.
Speaker 1 (01:19:25):
Imagine how you would feel watching.
Speaker 2 (01:19:28):
Joe Burrow get carted off after getting injured in a
game that doesn't matter at all. We make this argument
every August as it relates to the preseason.
Speaker 1 (01:19:39):
Should Joe play?
Speaker 2 (01:19:40):
You know, at least there there's, first of all, a
recent track record of the Bengals getting off the terrible starts,
and so you can make the argument it makes sense
to alter how they do things in the preseason.
Speaker 1 (01:19:50):
But also like there is.
Speaker 2 (01:19:52):
A goal there in August, right, there is a goal
that the intended goal is we want a round into shape.
We want to be at our best, We want to
hit the ground running when the season begins, and we
can use these preseason games to accomplish that goal. What
goal are you trying to accomplish? Playing the most important
investment in your franchise's history in a game that carries
(01:20:12):
no consequence. Protect the investment. Like you have investments, maybe
they're stocks, maybe they're material items. You're you're not cavalier
with that, right, like you're you're not just you're not
dismissive about, you.
Speaker 1 (01:20:30):
Know, certain risk factors.
Speaker 2 (01:20:31):
You're I would like to think you go out of
your way to protect the investment. I know the players
want to play. I respect the hell out of that.
I know that for a guy like Joe and others
on that team, there's a desire to set an example.
(01:20:51):
You know, make sure everybody understands we're not quitting because
I'm out there. You can't quit, man. I understand those things.
I understand them more then you might realize. But I
also understand the importance of this investment. I've seen him
get carted off before. I've watched the Bengals without him.
I know that twenty twenty five goes nowhere. If something
(01:21:13):
happens to Joe Burrow compromises his season, or at least
the start of it, protect the investment, you'll never go
wrong doing that. Thirteen minutes after five o'clock, I don't
know if we have time this hour, but we could
try five one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty and
(01:21:34):
eight six six, seven oh two three seven seven six.
The other Bengals news of the day, Evan McPherson has
a groin injury, his twenty twenty four season pretty much done.
Kate York is the new kicker, at least for the
time being. I feel for Evan because this is a
year that has kind of gotten away from him to
a degree, and now he has been deprived of the
(01:21:56):
opportunity to kind of get it back on track and
make us and maybe even him feel better about twenty
twenty five. The UC game last night tough loss, tough loss, tough,
tough loss to watch. I didn't feel good about it
after the first six seven minutes, and then when they
cut it to six, then four, then two in the
(01:22:16):
second half, I didn't just think they were gonna win.
I thought they were gonna win going away. Unfortunately, they
had no answer for Eric Dixon last night. He was
the best player on the floor. Three really quick takeaways.
If we need takeaways, number one is this, And it's
obvious they badly need Dan Skillings. Do they get him
back for the Xavier game, don't know. Did they get
(01:22:37):
him back for the Dayton game, don't know. But for
the games that are really going to determine how good
this team is gonna be and how good the season
is gonna be, they need him on the floor. He
can do so many different things. Bear Kats have a
lot of guys who could do things. I'm not sure
they have anybody who could do all the things that
Dan Skillings can do.
Speaker 1 (01:22:55):
So that would be number one. Number two would be
and channelooted. There's a little to this.
Speaker 2 (01:23:00):
About an hour ago, we talked so much about depth
and college basketball.
Speaker 1 (01:23:03):
Boy, they could play ten guys, they could play eleven guys. Eh.
Speaker 2 (01:23:06):
Yeah, And then you see in hard games, especially on
the road, players eight, nine, ten, there's a big, big
drop off. You're gonna play dudes like Aaronton Page and Tyler,
Betsy and Josh Reed.
Speaker 1 (01:23:20):
You can't have them on the floor together.
Speaker 2 (01:23:23):
And I think it's I think you're being fair if
you look get some of those guys in Wonder and
in hard games, like hard games, in hard places, tough
places to play, are those players are gonna be able
to rely on to play meaningful minutes.
Speaker 1 (01:23:36):
And then the other one is this, and it sounds
it sounds like an insult. It's not meant to be.
Speaker 2 (01:23:42):
Villanova had the best player on the floor last night,
Eric Dixon. We knew going into the game they were
gonna have the best player on the floor, and he
was awesome last night, thirty one and seven. He scored
from close. He scored from three, he scored from the
free throw line. He was terrific and he had help,
but he was their offense. They attempted forty seven shots.
He took almost half of them, twenty three. Will they
(01:24:05):
play against the team that has a guy who carries
that large of a load.
Speaker 1 (01:24:10):
Don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:24:11):
I do think they're gonna have games this year where
the other team has the best guy. Bearcats need to
be the better team. I still believe they can be
more often than not. But I think we kind of
knew that going into the season but really didn't want
to admit it. I'm at least willing to admit it now.
(01:24:31):
They've got to figure out a way to win games
when the other team has the best guy, because last
night will not be the only time that's the case.
Seventeen minutes after five o'clock, our friend Richard Skinner's gonna
join us. We're at Turfway Park, racing and gaming here
till six o'clock on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station.
Speaker 13 (01:24:51):
This is Football in Thennetti. Run to you in part
by blood Light and by Skyline Shilly on the official
home of the lengos Es ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:25:03):
Richard Skinner is here as he is on Wednesdays from
Local twelve and Local twelve dot com.
Speaker 1 (01:25:08):
On x at Local twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:25:10):
Skinny kind enough to join us and spend a few
minutes with us every single Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (01:25:14):
How's it going, it's going. How are you.
Speaker 2 (01:25:18):
I'm doing very very well. I'm excited to talk to you.
When do the Bengals players start making business decisions?
Speaker 12 (01:25:26):
You know, I think that gets a little overblown because
I'm trying to think of who could The only one
who could, in Siri make them is probably Jamar Chase, right,
because he still needs to prove he can play, that
he's not going to miss games because of injuries, and
he may have legit injury when all said and done,
if you know, comes down to it, I mean the
(01:25:46):
rest of me to put some stuff on tape. The
one decision that's the most interesting to me is when
they tell Joe Burrow you're not playing the last two games.
How does it react to that?
Speaker 2 (01:25:56):
Do you think that's what they'll do?
Speaker 10 (01:25:59):
I do?
Speaker 12 (01:26:00):
I mean, I think you have to make an adult
decision here, which is we're paying this guy some real,
big time guaranteed money. Again, I'm not telling you they
need to do any of this stuff to learn mathematically eliminated.
And I don't think they agreed. Yes, great, Yeah, I
think yeah. I think everybody agrees with that portion of it.
But I think if it comes down to it, he's
too valuable to your franchise. Do you really want him
(01:26:21):
to get hurt in a meaningless game that would cost
him six eight, ten games full season in twenty twenty five. No.
And I know he's playing for numbers. I know he's
playing for stats. And I don't mean that's that's what
he's that's you know, his goal. But he's playing for
some of those things, right, But I think you have
to just say, man, you're too valuable to us. We
got always guaranteed money shelled out. You get hurt, I
(01:26:42):
mean we're paying you not to play. No, no, no, no,
We're you're gonna have to sit these last couple, last three,
whatever that number is of games.
Speaker 2 (01:26:50):
I agree with you, and I think that's what I
would do. I think enough of Joe Burrow that I
would understand that he didn't like that. But I think
there's a difference between I think they're not liking it.
But understanding it and not liking it and throwing a
temper tantrum. I don't think he's gonna not like it
and throw a tempertantum. I think he's not gonna like it,
but understand they're keeping his in the team's best interest
in heart.
Speaker 12 (01:27:11):
Yeah, and I think he is certainly smart enough to
fully understand that this is good for both of them.
And listen, I do appreciate that he's not gonna like it.
That shows you how much he loves playing this game,
and he does. He loves all of it. He loves
the physicality of it, he loves the preparation of it.
I think that would really affect him a bit to say, hey, man,
just prepares the backup this week. He'll probably fully prepare
(01:27:32):
to be ready to play and price and paying at
some point if Jake Brawny show to put me in,
I'm ready. I'm good. But no, No, it's he's two
way too valuable and there's two I need to do
this as a business thing, mo, there's too much money
tied up in A guy like that guarantees you didn't
have to worry about he guarantees fifteen twenty years ago.
But you gotta worry about him now because they're real.
You're paying the guy no matter what. I'd rather pay
(01:27:53):
him to play meaningful games than get hurt and miss
meaningful games and just paying for nothing.
Speaker 1 (01:27:58):
Uh. Do you think lew Rumo state was fate was
sealed on Sunday?
Speaker 8 (01:28:03):
I don't.
Speaker 12 (01:28:04):
I don't. I do think this whatever decision they're going
to make on him or other coaches, I would hope
that decision at least has been formulated and made that.
You know, it's not like the last five games, unless
they were to somehow miraculous to get to the playoffs,
which should save anybody. We saw that with Marvin a
couple of times, right the Tyler Boyd touched the reception
(01:28:25):
in Baltimore. Man, there's so much bring Marvin back another year.
Don't bring Marvin back in it. But they did, and
I don't. I don't think that's the way you should
should operate. I'm not gonna tell you you if they've
made the decision to bring him back, I'm okay with that.
If they make the decision to fire him, I understand that.
But I think whatever decision you end up finally making
(01:28:45):
when the time comes, that decision, in my opinion, should
should already honestly be made.
Speaker 1 (01:28:52):
But you don't think it has been.
Speaker 12 (01:28:54):
I don't, and I as a part of me that
doesn't think he's going to get fired. I think it'll
fall in a position coach or too. I certainly don't
think it's going to be Zach Taylor. I do think
that the next, you know, layer of coach right is
the coordinator. And that's usually what happens in a circumstance
like this with a heat around the head coach. But
the head coach has done enough good things and you say,
all right, he deserves to run it back another year,
(01:29:17):
but you're gonna have to make some changes on the
rest of your staff, and that usually then falls to
the coordinator coordinators. It's not going to fall to the
offensive coordinator this team, Dan Pitcher, but it could fall Tolu.
If it's not that layer, then it's got to be
a position coach layer that you go, hey, defensive line
hasn't been really developed. Man Let the defensive line coach go,
secondary hasn't been very well developed. Man Let the secondary
coach go. I think that's probably where we're at in
(01:29:39):
the pecking order.
Speaker 2 (01:29:41):
I I'm usually pretty loath to, you know, talk about
a player not playing hard because because I.
Speaker 1 (01:29:47):
And you know this more than I know.
Speaker 2 (01:29:50):
I know what it means to these guys and their professionals,
and and they do their best. But I've seen people
question the effort of some guys on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (01:30:00):
Is that fair to do?
Speaker 10 (01:30:02):
I think it's fair to do.
Speaker 12 (01:30:04):
But the question was asking, I guess the one guy
in particular was Geno Stone looks the tackling, right, I mean,
and lou who Anna Roumo and we talked to him
on Monday, was asked that and he said, no, he's
one hundred percent giving me. He's getting me one hundred
percent all out. I truly believe that. Okay, I'm gonna
take the coach's work for it. She means he's not
a very good tackler. So I actually thought I had
this in my key brain today as I was writing
(01:30:24):
a column about you know, all the defensive woes and
there's really no answers for it right now, and you
know they're trying their best to give answers for none
are to come. And I thought, well, maybe Kemos Stone's
misstackles I go back to when he got hurt in Cleveland, right,
Remember he got carved off.
Speaker 10 (01:30:37):
The field, and you.
Speaker 12 (01:30:38):
Know, maybe he's like in the back of his mind
at the moment of of you know, I don't need
that again this year. And then I went back and looked.
I went, oh, no, he missed five tackles in the
Baltimore game early this year before he hurt that that shit,
And so this wasn't something new. It came about because
of an injury. He's just not been very good. And
it makes you wonder that hey, last year, playing behind
ro qwand Smith and Patrick Queen as Baltimore linebackers, those
(01:31:00):
guys did the tackling. He just still in the back
end and said, oh, there's an overthrow. I'll take that
as an interception. And he got paid for it. I mean,
you know, maybe shame on the Bengals for not doing
further new diligenies on him as a player of you know,
he got masked by two. I think you'd agree with this.
To the better linebackers in the league, Roquan Fuitt might
be the best. And so when you're playing behind those guys,
how many times you gotta worry about somebody slipping through
(01:31:21):
and you having to save the day on a tackle.
Now you're just back there playing center field and making interceptions,
which he did really well last year in Baltimore. But
he has not played well at all for this team
this year.
Speaker 1 (01:31:31):
Are you excited for the start of the Cave York era?
Speaker 12 (01:31:37):
It'll begin and end very quickly, So we ask the
Roofy part. This never came up about any injury issue
with Evan, Right, and he kicked on Sunday and I
don't know if he hurt himself late, but there was
an odd thing that occurred both in LA and then
I saw it actually occur on Sunday. You may have too, well.
He just bolts for the locker room from time to time, Right,
And I'm like, yes, I mean, what's his prime? I
(01:31:59):
don't so is this a is this a a Eurology
issue or is this just a cold Groyd. I don't
know the answer to that. It just seems odd that
he's done that. All of a sudden, he lands on
the the the uh well lands, I guess not. I
are but gonna miss some games and they have to
sign Kate York because of it, you know. I Yeah,
(01:32:20):
I'm not excited for the Cade York year. He's pening
on how many teams eight nine, ten?
Speaker 1 (01:32:24):
He's been on a bunch.
Speaker 12 (01:32:27):
Here.
Speaker 1 (01:32:28):
Oh boy, that's exciting. I feel bad. I feel bad for.
Speaker 2 (01:32:32):
I feel bad for Evan because the season has kind
of gone sideways for him a little bit this year,
and I was hopeful for him and the team that
he could use, you know, starting this past Sunday with Pittsburgh,
but he could use the rest of the season to
sort of put all that aside and going the next
season with us talking about the old money back.
Speaker 1 (01:32:51):
And now we can't do that.
Speaker 12 (01:32:53):
No, now, he wondered, why keep front of the locker
room all the time?
Speaker 10 (01:33:00):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (01:33:00):
Yeah, all right? But when do you do a mock draft?
When do those start?
Speaker 12 (01:33:05):
Those may start sooner rather than later. I remember one year.
I think I started one on September twenty third. I'm
you know, at least at least we're further at least
we're closer to Christmas time for those nowadays can't wait.
Speaker 1 (01:33:16):
All right? Thank you as always?
Speaker 10 (01:33:18):
You bet my man. Kids.
Speaker 2 (01:33:19):
That's our guy, Richard Skinner from Local twelve and Local
twelve dot com. We're Turfway Park Racing and Gaming Live
racing starts tonight. We'll learn more about it next. ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sport Station.
Speaker 13 (01:33:32):
You've been listening to a football in thenetti on the
official home of the Bengals, Cincinnatis ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnatis esp.
Speaker 2 (01:33:42):
Three minutes away from about six o'clock. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty Moniker. We have had the pleasure of broadcasting
today from Turfway Park Racing and Gaming. Where tonight I
want a live racing on top of everything else happening here.
I've mentioned a bunch of different times. The stage that
I am I am on right now is awesome. If
you come during the weekends, there's always great bands, great music,
(01:34:05):
great entertainment, can watch whatever game you want, there's betting, kiosks,
the food is terrific, and now we add live racing
to it. So from a turf Way Park racing and gaming,
our guy Matt sha hottie, what is going on?
Speaker 4 (01:34:18):
Just really just geared up?
Speaker 1 (01:34:21):
Got me, gotcha? Got me there?
Speaker 15 (01:34:23):
I am just getting geared up here for live racing
today starting here first post at about five point fifty five. Yeah,
I've got an exciting night of racing. This whole week
is jam packed with racing and December fourteenth, we have
the first annual All Weather Synthetic Championships here, giving away
over a million dollars out of four stakes races. So
just continuing to make sure that we're providing that excellent
(01:34:45):
experience for all our guests here.
Speaker 1 (01:34:47):
So like opening night's a big deal, this is like
a special night for you.
Speaker 15 (01:34:51):
Yeah, this is my this is actually my first racing experience,
so I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (01:34:55):
Very good, very good for you know, there are folks
who haven't been here. Maybe they've they've come for entertainment
or to play games, have dinner, stuff like that, but
they haven't been out to the track yet.
Speaker 1 (01:35:05):
Give folks an idea of what it's like out there.
Speaker 15 (01:35:08):
It's gorgeous, just a beautiful facility. Churchill's put a ton
of money into this facility, so it's just the A
plus a horse racing experience.
Speaker 4 (01:35:19):
Like you had mentioned, the food's great.
Speaker 15 (01:35:20):
The atmosphere in the room is spectacular, and you know,
on the flip side, I think a lot of Northern
Kentucky needs to come check us out from an HRM
gaming machine perspective as well.
Speaker 2 (01:35:32):
Yeah, and you know, you're gonna have folks who say, well,
you know, live racing, it's winner, I'm outside. You could
enjoy the live racing and not have to be subject
to the elements.
Speaker 15 (01:35:41):
Yep, inside, Grab a beer, grab a drink, it's excellent
and come hang out with us.
Speaker 1 (01:35:46):
A good deal.
Speaker 2 (01:35:47):
Is there anything we need to know about the winter
meat season here at Turf Way?
Speaker 15 (01:35:52):
I mean we're Wednesday through Saturday basically right around five
point fifty five all the way through about almost ten
o'clock night, and we should we should have some of
the largest, uh largest amount of horses racing in Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (01:36:09):
And then you know where we are right now, especially
during the fall and winter when it's a little cooler outside.
Speaker 1 (01:36:16):
The entertainment in this stage is awesome.
Speaker 15 (01:36:19):
Yeah, we do a great job of, you know, Friday
Saturday nights, just making sure we're programming with some of
the hottest local bands in town. And as the racing
season goes away, then that event center turns into a
national acts right from right around April through November.
Speaker 4 (01:36:35):
So entertainment, entertainment, entertainment, and that place is beautiful too, Yeah, gorgeous.
Speaker 1 (01:36:39):
Can't beat that.
Speaker 2 (01:36:40):
And then you know, obviously we're we're coming down the
stretch of the college football season. We're coming down the
stretch of the NFL season. I think you've become familiar
with in this part of the country. College basketball is enormous.
You can watch every game and beat on them here.
Speaker 4 (01:36:53):
Correct, which is the key for me. Hey, this huge
screen behind us here three hundred inch.
Speaker 15 (01:36:59):
I mean, any thing that you want to put on,
just you know, if there's a game that's not on,
grab us.
Speaker 4 (01:37:03):
We'll make sure we'll be put it on for you.
Speaker 1 (01:37:05):
That has happened for me here. Good, Like I've done that. Good,
I've done that here right.
Speaker 2 (01:37:09):
It was back during the college basketball season last year,
the Dayton Flyers.
Speaker 4 (01:37:13):
There you go, need to see my alma.
Speaker 2 (01:37:15):
Mater, need to see the Flyers and the un LV
is going to play, and that's where you went, maybe
we'll make a wager. But within seconds there was it
was Dayton and Davidson last year.
Speaker 4 (01:37:24):
There you go.
Speaker 15 (01:37:25):
Yeah, I mean, just just raise your hand and we're
there for you and make that experience.
Speaker 2 (01:37:29):
It is pretty awesome to have legal sports wagering here
in the Bluegrass.
Speaker 10 (01:37:33):
Day Yeah.
Speaker 15 (01:37:35):
I mean, it's just I mean, sports has taken off
all over the country and right just really convenient. I
mean from from our property perspective. I mean, by the
time you park and walk in the door, it's extremely close.
We have kiosks all over the place. So if you
just want to run in and make a bet, we're
here for you.
Speaker 2 (01:37:51):
Now you've joined us on the show this year to
pick NFL in college games, it's a little early in
the week. Still does anything stand out? Or are you
like two knee deep in the horse?
Speaker 15 (01:38:00):
You know what, I haven't looked at a ton I
just quickly quickly took a look at. I mean, for me,
just that Thursday night game. I know we've been covering
a lot of Thursday night stuff. I think it's just
gonna be a shootout. I think both offenses playing inside
and Detroit will will be over that fifty one and
a half. I can't stand the Oakland Raiders. I'm a
(01:38:21):
Broncos guy, so anytime they get pounded, I love it.
So I'm thinking the Bucks are gonna, you know, take
care of them on Sunday. With Oakland having to travel
all the way to Tampa. I think they gave the
Chiefs a pretty good run, and I think they're gonna
be a pretty good leftdown with the Raiders and looking
for Tampa to kind of run away with that.
Speaker 1 (01:38:39):
One that Detroit Green Bay games.
Speaker 2 (01:38:41):
I think, and I'm not the first person to say
this on this radio station, I think the Packers are
the best team that nobody's talking about.
Speaker 15 (01:38:48):
Yeah, they surprised me that they keeps the Jordan Love
just keeps surprising me of what he's able to accomplish.
That's really you know, under the radar very much. Josh
Jacobs having a really good season. So just that'll be fun, Took.
It's gonna be a shootout, all.
Speaker 2 (01:39:03):
Right, So I can watch that here tomorrow. I can
wager on it, and we've got live racing.
Speaker 4 (01:39:07):
Sure Trifecta can't peat it.
Speaker 1 (01:39:09):
Try effected go all right?
Speaker 2 (01:39:11):
So post times, like thirteen minutes away, he's got like
a ceremony or something.
Speaker 1 (01:39:16):
Do you cut a ribbon? What happens?
Speaker 4 (01:39:18):
I just let's rock and roll. Let's get this thing started,
all right.
Speaker 1 (01:39:21):
Good stuff, I'll let you get to it.
Speaker 2 (01:39:22):
Thank you as always, Thank you appreciate you having us
anytime anything you're at Turfway.
Speaker 1 (01:39:26):
Park racing and gaming.
Speaker 2 (01:39:27):
You could always learn more at Turfway Dot com It's
eighteen away.
Speaker 1 (01:39:32):
From six o'clock.
Speaker 2 (01:39:33):
We're here at Turfway Park, racing and gaming on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 9 (01:39:38):
Cincinnati's family sports grill is butter Bees.
Speaker 1 (01:39:41):
Butterbes is a fun, family sports bar with the highest
call of the injured reserve in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:39:45):
But Evan mcgeherson's on it with a groin issue. And
so the Bengals have signed Kate York, which is exciting,
and congratulations to Kate Bummer for Evan. We talked about
this with Skinny about thirty minutes ago. This is twenty
twenty four. Frankly, never completely got off the ground, kind
of got sideways, and I I'm hopeful for a lot
(01:40:08):
of things over the final five games of the season,
but one of them was for him to kind of
get back on track so that when we start looking
at the long list of to do items for the
Bengals this offseason, kicker isn't one of them.
Speaker 1 (01:40:23):
I don't know that it.
Speaker 2 (01:40:23):
Will be, but you know, let's be honest, when we
talk about the twenty twenty five Bengals, we're gonna be wondering, like,
can Evan macpheerson emerge as not just a reliable kicker,
but a kicker who's a weapon again. Bengals game plan
has a lot more on that tonight from six to
eight tonight, Dan Hord Dave Lapham on ESPN fifteen thirty.
That will slide the Mark Stoops Show to Fox Sports
(01:40:45):
thirteen sixty.
Speaker 1 (01:40:46):
Are they doing it?
Speaker 2 (01:40:47):
From Jeff Rubys Mark Pope Show tonight at seven o'clock
on Fox Sports thirteen sixty as well. Kentucky coming off
their loss against Clemston where I think we had our
first court storming of the season, I believe at Clemson
last night. And when there's court storming, then of course
you have to get the sportsmanship lessons from people about
court storming. Not that dissimilar from the sportsmanship lessons we
(01:41:11):
all got with the flag planting in college football. This
past weekend, College troops in Ohio State takes on Maryland.
John Morossi at Fox Sports reports the Reds are among
the teams in the mix to perhaps trade for Garrett
Crochet from the Chicago White Sox. Garrett Crochet was an
All Star last year, twenty five years old, two years
(01:41:33):
of team control. He fits the profile of what you're
looking for now not the most experienced guys is starting
pitcher basically one full season as a starter, but pitched
in thirty three games last year. If you subscribe to
the belief that you can never have enough starting pitching.
Speaker 1 (01:41:50):
Well, then you're all on board with Garrett Crochet. They
still have a lot of work to do this offseason.
Speaker 2 (01:41:56):
I mean, as much as we've talked of Brady Singer
and Terry Francona and a different coaching staff in many
positions and maybe acquiring Garrett Crochet offensively, they haven't done
anything to make the team better, and they haven't done
anything to address depth. There's lots of time, and the
Winter meetings start on Sunday, and I think if you've watched,
(01:42:19):
if you've paid attention to the Red's hot stove, if
you will, in recent off seasons, the pattern when they've
made a splash has typically been Winter Meetings come and go,
and then they do something in that week right before Christmas.
I'll never forget when they traded Homer Bailey for yes Elpwe,
(01:42:42):
Kyle Farmer, Matt Kemp and Alex Wood. That was like
the eighteenth or nineteenth because I was at a Christmas
dinner with my grandma in law, and I had to
leave to go write something for the Athletic about yes Elpe.
I remember when they acquired Matt Lato's, which is obvious
going back to kind of another regime in twelve years.
Speaker 1 (01:43:03):
That was right before Christmas.
Speaker 2 (01:43:05):
So we'll see if the Winter meetings yield something of
major consequence in the days leading up to Christmas, which
is obviously three weeks away. Hockey Tonight downtown, the Cyclones
are skating against Fort Wayne. It's pucks and bucks night,
Pups and pucks. So you bring your dog if your
dog likes hockey. Tonight's to night and I think they
(01:43:25):
have two dollars beers too. I don't know if my
dog likes hockey, but I'll bring her. I can't bring
her to night, but bring her to a game here
soon Tomorrow. In the show I'm not here, Chad Brendle
will be filling in for me, and then Friday is
Bengals pep Rally, and then Monday we are the pregame
show before the Bengals.
Speaker 1 (01:43:43):
And Cowboys, so we have that to look forward to.
Speaker 2 (01:43:48):
Anything you might have missed this week go find on
the iHeartRadio app or the podcast page to ESPN fifteen
thirty dot com. My thanks to Rodney Simpson for producing
on site, Tarren Bland for produce back in Kenwood. Tearn
how many beers you have during the Christmas party.
Speaker 1 (01:44:07):
You didn't vibe? Man?
Speaker 2 (01:44:12):
All right, we're done. Bengals game plan is next. Stick
around for that, have a great night. Thanks to the
staff here at Turfway Park Racing and Gaming for having us.
We hope to come back soon and have a great night.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports station.
