(01:29):
is fantastic and they have us everysingle week, typically on Tuesdays, but
because of Monday Night football, weare here on a Wednesday. Paul Danner
Junior's here. What's up from theathletic from the Bengalshaus the day for you
it is. I'm just sort ofdown here right now. Yeah, they've
got the late these short weeks, everyone's everything, all that things felt right

(01:49):
for like a month, Thursday game, Thursday game, there's just been weird
schedules in between. So they're ina late a late practice and open locker
room today. But we came downearly and we talked to offense corner and
Brian Callahan this afternoon, so ZachTaylor had his press, so we're just
kind of we're just kind of hangingout and what a better opportunity for me

(02:09):
to walk down the street along ourbeautiful riverfront, Yeah and come hang out
here for a little bit. Well, there's there's a lot to discuss.
Yeah, yeah, a lot todiscuss. There always is, thinks of
change that the tone the tenor lastweek it was this team is going to
finish five and twelve and now youknow, boy, if you just get
in you know, look at theAFC. Boy, the Chiefs aren't dominant,

(02:32):
you know that. But the Dolphinshaven't beat anybody good. Yeah,
Jacob Snake goes into the playoffs.Oh boy, didn't quite cancel my Vegas
hotel room. You know there's someof that, yeah, is there?
Yeah? I mean okay, yes, I guess everything is either awesome or
off. There's no room for thecan't just live in the middle a little

(02:53):
bit. I love how everyone isidiots last week and then this week it's
apologies to Zach Taylor, and I'msure that those apologies will be retracted after
a game against Indianapolis if they don'tplay as well. It's just that it's
where we're at, right. It'sthe reactive I'll say this, And we
talked about this in when Burrow firstwent down and before this lead up to

(03:16):
the Steelers game. This is whyyou like, This is why you follow
a team. This is why youget to know the players. Yes,
this is why you care about sportsbecause it can provide you with moments like
Monday Night. What made the twentyone season for the Bengals so fun for

(03:38):
everyone was the fact it was soout of nowhere and the team was so
fun and you were getting to knowthese players that became very special and close
I think to this city and whenit can be a story like Jake Brownings
is a guy who has worked foreverfor a chance, hoping for a shot,

(04:00):
who's done the right thing, andI think so many people can associate
with that in their own lives ofyou just try to do the right things
behind the scenes and hope that oneday someone will notice and it will matter
and you'll get your chance to provethat it was great and for it to
go from what it was the previousweek to Monday Night football. This guy

(04:20):
having this chance and to not justmake the most of it, but to
have a historic game that's up therewith any that we've seen Number nine play
here for those who don't know.He was named AFC Offensive Player of the
Week. Correct him and Burrow bothget ac Offensive Player of the Weeks this
year, and he's he's one ofHe's on a list of seven quarterbacks that

(04:46):
have ever had an eighty six percentcompletion with three hundred and fifty passing yards
in a game ever in NFL history. To do that when you know his
story and we know this team, and to see that come so out of
nowhere a game that was already reallywildly entertaining on top of it all,
it's just kind of why you doit. I think, you know,
it's why you stick around. It'swhy you don't talk about or get obsessed

(05:11):
with draft picks and stuff like. And that's like, I get it.
People love that, and people arethinking, I'm fine with whatever portion of
the conversation people want to have tome personally. That's one of my favorite
games I've covered because you know thestory and you know how much it means
to Jake Browning to go out thereand do that, and and and then

(05:35):
to top it off by a gamewinning drive where he you know, converts
a third and ten and all theother stuff. It's just it's two storybook
to even believe, and you're justhappy for him, and it's fun as
a fan to be around for stufflike Yeah, you know, you talk
about it being one of your favoritegames you ever covered that. I said

(05:57):
on Monday Night, that's gonna godown as one of my all time favored
Bengals wins. I don't know ifit's going to propel them to the playoffs.
I don't know if it's going topropel them to another victory. Here's
what I know. In nineteen ninetyfour, the Bengals were owning and this
guy named Jeff Blake almost beats thereigning Super Bowl champion Cowboys and then wins
the next two games. Jeff Blakenever had a winning season in Cincinnati.

(06:25):
He was the source of a lotof frustration and a lot of angst,
and never ended up being quite asgood as folks then thought he was going
to be. But for those ofus who were there, that stretch,
Shake and Blake was awesome. Yeah, and I look back on it with
an incredible amount of fondness. Iwill look back on Monday Night in thirty

(06:46):
years exactly the same way. Yeah, Willie Anderson calls pay course Stadium,
the house that Blake it is,but it is because they were so deep.
Yes, for a minute, itreminded people of what a good team
can mean to the city and howit can energize things in swing that vote.
But where does this? Okay? Two games to the games from this

(07:09):
year. Which one are you morefond of? The Jake Browning game or
the Ricky Carcher game? Which one? Which one do you connect with?
Or the Ricky Carter game? Yeah? The Ricky Carter game is because you
won't get another Ricky Carter game. We'll get another Jake Browning game this weekend.
Yeah. And like the nation enjoyedthe Jake Brownie that's true. There's

(07:30):
only a few of us who lateat night on some random Tuesday, we're
watching Ricky Carcher shut down the Royalsshutdown might not be the right term,
but no, the Ricky Carter gamewas close the door. Yeah, but
the Jake Browning game I will alwaysYeah, regardless of how this unfolded,
Jake Brownie might play himself into astarting job somewhere and be a great quarterback.

(07:51):
If in twenty years you say tome the Jake Browning game, I'm
gonna go Monday night on the roadagainst the Jags, the season kind of
hanging in the balance. He'd playedpoorly, a lot of angst, everybody's
frustrated. He goes thirty four orthirty seven and he's the player of the
week and he delivers a touchdown ora game winning field goal drive when they
had to score. They're not winningthe game. Yeah, if they don't,

(08:13):
there, I'll be able to spitout exactly what I saw decades from
now. He just made so muchmoney for himself. Good for him,
you know what I mean. Yeah, it's like it's like and that's why,
and that's why he did it.I mean, that's why he invested
all the money in his offseason trainingstuff and kept trying to play football despite
the fact that he'd been cut andcut and cut and then cut again and

(08:37):
everything else, because he knew likeit, man, if he just got
himself a chance, it can belife changing. And that was life changing
for him. I mean, grantedhe could come out in the next four
weeks, maybe it doesn't go well, but like the fact, if you
can prove one time that you cando that, yeah, you're employed in
this league for multiple years as aquarterback, even if the backup writing it's

(08:58):
worth a ton of money and andand so great, great for him.
But the most fun you know, for the most fun things about sports is
that the stories that come out ofnowhere. And I feel like that's what
this team has in front of themright now, is they have the potential

(09:18):
to be a team and a storythat comes from out of nowhere that comes
from the depths of the darkest momentsof the last three years, after that
Baltimore game and that Pittsburgh game twoto kind of restoring life and and and
and remembering that it's not just aboutcheering for Joe Burrow to go be great

(09:39):
every week. That there can bemore to it than that. And I
think that's really cool for people thatthat like sports and that appreciate, you
know, those moments in sports anddon't make it always about well, they
got to win the Super Bowl, you know what. I think it would
be just as invigorating for their connectionwith this fan base, which is obviously

(10:00):
great anyway, But if just findsome way to make the playoffs, people
would remember this season very fondly withoutquestion. If they ended up spending December
and January finding some way to sneakin, even if it were to result
in a loss as the seventh seedin the wild card, getting there would
be an incredible story. Actually,I said this from the get go,
and you know, it's a mantrathat I've repeated for years. I want

(10:22):
my teams to be good or interesting, ideally both. I don't know how
good these guys are gonna be,but for the time being, oh boy,
they're interesting. Yeah, They're reallyinteresting. And they get and they
get all these games against teams thatare very much like them. It's like,
you know, you look at thestandings and you just say, well,
everybody that's seven to five except Houston. They're about to play, I
mean everyone to all three of thoseteams, including Indianapolis this week, and

(10:46):
so I mean, they have theopportunity to go win. And if Jake
Browning can be you know, somepositive fraction of what he was against Jacksonville,
they've got a real chance to winthose games. I mean, why
can't you go beat Gardner Minshew andI guess Josh Dobbs or whoever's going to
quarterback the Vikings back to back weeksat home. I mean, you you

(11:07):
would hope that certainly feels more thanplausible at this point when you consider what
he looked like on Monday and howthey seem to straighten things out that went
so wrong that there is there isone person who I felt bad for.
A J mccron guy. Yeah, tough, tough scene. A mccaon guy.
I think woke up on Monday thinkingthere's a chance might see my dude

(11:28):
tonight. I'm gonna be honest withyou. I woke up on Monday morning
thinking it might make sense for AJMcCarron got to see his dude. AJ
mccaeron guy's not seen his dude, well probably not, I mean, bar
barring and Injery, Yeah, we'renot going to see Tommy caerr. Guy.
You can you can ride the restof this year something that they can.
Yeah, I mean that's that's whatit's going to be. And and
you know what, and and wewe talked a lot about, you know,

(11:54):
the backup quarterback position and and maybeif the Bengals need to reevaluate how
they view that position after what's happenedin the league and with their quarterback,
not just this year, but youknow the acl all the injuries, all
the hits, is taken. Dothey need to have a deeper investment in
that position? And the good thingis not granted, They potentially will have
to find a way to sign JakeBrowning in a scenario where he plays really

(12:16):
well the rest of this year. But they might have found a solve there.
And if you end up in aposition, say next year, at
some point like you were in weeksone through four this year, yeah,
you're more willing, and I thinkJoe Burrow is more willing to say,
you know what, I'm gonna sitthis one out, make sure I get
myself right with whatever's maybe nagging him, and let Jake take this one because

(12:41):
we know what he can do well. What's interesting about that is we really
haven't talked about the recovery timeline asit relates to Joe and next year.
Who's to say that it's a guarantee. It certainly feels like there are no
guarantees. But who's right, who'sto say there's not? You know what,
he's not quite worry he wants tobe or where they want him to
be. Okay, look Week one, I got this insurance policy. His

(13:05):
name is Jake Browning. He couldplay if Joe can't. We obviously want
him on the field. He couldwork his way back, but you know
what, maybe maybe week three,Week three is a little bit more plausible.
Yeah, well, you feel ahell of a lot better now.
I mean, I think about situationslike that Monday night football game against the
Rams, with which you know,of Quincy. They won, but still
you knew he was out there takinga huge risk. They the team,

(13:28):
and he felt like it was arisk. You know. We remember that
line at the time was you know, well there's also a risk in starting
the season zero to three. Yeah, and when weighing those well, now
you don't feel as much of thatrisk of it's either Burrow or we're screwed.
And that means something when you're talkingabout a guy that has battled injuries

(13:48):
and you are always concerned about makingsure he's there when it matters most at
the end of the year, sothat you know this plays out in a
long term shape too. Again,Jake Browning, if he plays well the
rest of this year, will besought after by everyone who's having the same
thoughts throughout this league of maybe weneed to invest a little more in our

(14:09):
backup quarterback situation and a guy that'sgone out there improve it could be an
answer to that. And so maybeyou're paying a little more and that's something
they should be willing to do whenyou consider their spot. But you know,
a positive development, not just fornow, not just for the rest
of this season, but for youknow, the potential of how much you
like and are comfortable with Joe Burrowand that quarterback. Twenty minutes after three

(14:33):
o'clock Paul Danner Juniors on Twitter slashx at Paul Danner Junior covering the Bengals
for the Athletic. The podcast iscalled here that podcast Growl and make sure
you check that out as well. He's with me until three. All right,
get a little bit of a break. Okay, that's good. Rick
browing on Wednesdays talk to Xavier andNKU basketball. Ugh not pretty nice.
I love Rick. That's why I'mdoing that. You know, he's my

(14:54):
guy. He's is in normal Illinoisfor the KU O Stayking. Rick does
an awesome job on this broadcast,by the way, without question. Yeah,
he's really really good. Yes,I've told him that, like privately,
like not just performative like oh mandoes a great job. No,
I mean that very much. Seriously. I caught one that I was listening
to the game. I remember whereI was driving from the other day,

(15:15):
and I remember thinking to myself, man, Rick is really good at this.
He is. He is very goodat it. It's a twenty one
after three o'clock. We're here atthe more Line Locker House downtown on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station Cincinnati's twentyseven after three o'clock ESPN fifteen thirty.
More Egger and I work here atthe more Line Lockerhouse. By the way,
I mentioned we're typically here on Tuesdays. Obviously, today is Wednesday.

(15:39):
I talked earlier about the Chris KendallMarket Tonight Wednesday. Kids eat free Wednesday
Night twenty dollars unlimited ice slide purchase. You could like make it a whole
evening for the family. Kids eatfree on the market from the special pizza
chalet, and also the they've gotan all ages wooden ornament making thing on

(16:00):
Wednesday as well. The ice slideis terrific. If you haven't tried it,
it's cool for all ages. Ihad to talk my daughter into it,
but she did it. That wasa lot of fun, So check
it out kids eat free Wednesday nightwith twenty dollars unlimited ice slide purchase,
and you'll have a blast here atthe Moreline Loggerhouse and the Chris Kendlemarket outside.
But Paul Danner Jr. Is withus. If if we take away

(16:25):
the second wide receiver pass the secondone, yeah, first one. I
didn't have an issue with the secondone, Yeah, which was unconscionably bad.
Yeah, that is the best gameZach Taylor and Brian Callahan have called.
I would agree. And there isa couple of aspects to this that
stood out to me. One thiswas one of the reasons why I think

(16:49):
people thought they had done a greatjob the last couple of years and what
you were counting on them to dothis year, and that was they did
a great job of kind of learningfrom their mistakes and evolving as the season
has gone on. I think ittook a really ugly learning experience in Jake's

(17:10):
first game for them to kind ofget a better feel of what they really
have and then make the adjustments overthe course of the week and create a
game plan from whatever corner of theirplaybook they need to to amplify his skill
set, and make the offense worka little better. Right, This is
something that they have been good at. They've done this now multiple years,

(17:36):
and so while people have a lotof problems with things, and those were
all discussed over the last couple ofweeks, I think that's one thing that
to me I always leaned on withthem is that they've always done a really
good job of adjusting as the seasonhas gone on, seeing what the problems
are, identifying them, and findingsolutions. I thought this was the best
week over week example. And obviouslyit's very drastic when you look at what

(17:56):
happened in pittsburghers here, but ofhow things looked and how they learned from
that, and credit Jake Browning forbeing very open and honest with them.
I wrote about that a little bitin the lead up to the game,
about how you know them adapting wasreally going to be the key to getting
Jake Browning when they needed to beand they really thought that would happen because

(18:17):
they had loved where the conversation wasat with him coming off that Pittsburgh game.
They couldn't emphasize enough like how selfaware he is of what he does
well, what he doesn't do well. Explaining to them ways that he thought
he would be most comfortable, andhis understanding of this is my chance,
I'm going to speak up, andthem listening to him and taking that in

(18:38):
them finding things, the way theygot him into more bootlegs, the way
that they used the RPO game moreopenly, the way that they really you
know, not necessarily simplified things, but made it easier for him to be
confident in what he was seeing anddoing, specifically in their third down plan,
which was off the charts, andso all of that stuff really showed

(19:00):
up as let's figure out what happenedhere, let's fix it and find one
that's a little easier. It helpswhen you go from Steelers to Jackson.
That said, though, I thoughtthat was really you know, what stood
out to me was something that theyhave kind of been good at over the
long haul of the last couple ofseasons, really showing up in more of

(19:22):
a micro seven days or eight daysthere. It just it looked and felt
like they were creative and expanded whatthey did obviously including using Chase Brown and
him being effective, and so allof that's great. You couldn't help I
think watch Monday and wonder well,if we would have seen some of that
against Pittsburgh they possibly and maybe quitelikely when that football game, Yeah,

(19:47):
you would have liked to have seena little more. That said, they
ran thirty one more plays. Sure, I mean it's it's hard to get
to all the things that you saw, and I know that's something that they
people didn't like hearing about getting tothose plays. But I understand that.
But I mean that when you canrun thirty one more plays, you can
do a lot more creative things.Yeah. That said, you know the

(20:10):
Chase Brown things specifically being able tolean into different types of runs that they
that they specifically did not do withJoe Mixon because they don't fit him as
well. You know that getting tothe outside more, those those hits where
he's able to sneak out the backdoor and make the guy miss or whatever,
and those sorts of sorts of thingsthey don't They don't fit Joe,

(20:33):
and he hasn't been as good tothem. They like him more just kind
of punishing people up the middle, which, hey, look at that touchdown
run. Something to be said forthat, But it gives you so much
more versatility. It makes you lesspredictable and that's kind of what we were
asking for. What we criticized afterthat first game was why there wasn't more
versatility and more willingness to involve ChaseBrown the first time And and and yeah,

(20:56):
I think those questions are legit,whether it's a different scheme they're going
against or not. So who knowshow successful any of it would have been,
but yeah, you would have likedto have seen it earlier. But
that said, it took them oneweek to get to it, and that's
good and good too. I've oftenlobbied to be the director of common sense,

(21:17):
so I'd like to add to theresponsibilities. And maybe what we'll call
this is the guys, let's notso. We had at our house,
we had our neighbors over and thekids are playing and we hadn't shut the
pool down, but it wasn't poolweather, and you know, we have

(21:38):
like a fire going. And Iheard one of the kids say, let's
get in the pool, and Isaid, guys, let's not. You
gotta have a guys, let's go. Guys, let's not. Yeah,
like, I don't even want thisto get to my wife, your whatever,
guys, let's not so. Somebodywho's on the headset. This could
be Joe Burrow. When the widereceiver passes, call in your own end

(22:03):
and your quarterback is in rhythm, feeling it, somebody jumps on the headset
and says, guys, let's notI'll be that guy. Yeah. The
funny thing is to me is thatwe heard so much about the reason they
don't do a lot of that stuff, is that why would you do that
when you got a quarterback that canjust cook them in by doing regular stuff.
When your quarterback is cooking them doingregular stuff, everything's in your favor

(22:27):
the first one. They're the firsttrying to get some juice. Try different
way. We saw what happened lastweek. Go try something that that that
could have that could have certainly worked, and Jamar who knows what happens if
Jama doesn't slip, and maybe theyget it off and they're in. And
they were sort of explaining it today. The reason both of those plays were
sort of high up in their gameplan being that Jacksonville was a really high

(22:51):
over pursuit team and they wanted tokeep them specific with their early one.
Thinking about that all game and knowingthat they're looking to find ways to stop
them, from from over pursuing thefirst again. The first one makes sense,
but the second one, I getit. You had it there all
week, You've run it twice here, ridiculous. Well, and but at

(23:11):
that point, all you're doing ismoving the ball, doing the regular stuff.
Browning can't miss. I don't knowhow that one shows up deep in
your own end. I I youknow, I mean if that loses in
the game, I mean, itwas so close to losing them the game.
Guys, let's not that's what we'llcall it. I mean, and
folks will say, well, TylerBoyd, he played quarterback in high school.

(23:33):
I took wood shop in high school. You wouldn't hire me to make
you a table. Okay, nowthey played quarter he's not playing quarterback in
the National Football League. Let's lethim play wide receiver. How about this.
I would hire you to make mea table, just so I can
tell people that's the table of themoment made. I want to see what
it looks like. Give me yourclosest shot to what you could do.
Make it so famously so my momloves this story. I made a three

(23:56):
legged table. You did, Yeahthat turn out? Yes? I made
it three I mean it was like, you know, barely big enough for
like my daughters. You just giveup? Did you give up at the
fourth the fourth lego? Just itkept falling off? So got a got
a D plus? Like that waslike the project you had to get you
a pass? Yeah, I gota pass because I think I did good

(24:19):
stain work on it. But threeleg a table, boy, I gotta
see that project got a D plus, like I think for the rest of
the marking period. I so Imade a mini bad. I had a
professor in school who anytime we werewriting a story for him, if there
was an error of fact in it, it was an automatic fail, right

(24:40):
automatic. No matter how good therest of the stories, there's error fact
in there, you fail. That'sthe whole point of this thing. To
me. The number of legs onthe table, I think feels like the
same thing as maybe maybe more grege. Just then, I don't err,
I don't disagree with you. Yeah, I think we need a question this.
I would have failed it. Iexpected it to fail, but I
think he appreciate there was some effortthere. But yeah, you wouldn't hire

(25:02):
me to make a table. Yeah, let's let Tyler boyd I get it
I get it. He's he madethe National Football League as a wide receiver.
Let's let him do that. Yeah, I I I get it,
and I and I appreciate that itwas sitting there because you're think going into
the game, thinking like how manytrick plays do we need to pull out
to try to make the ball tonight? And you had it and you like
the idea of it. Sure, but there's got to be the point where

(25:23):
you adjust and say, right, maybe maybe we just see how long this
thing caps. Here's what I don'tunderstand. And and again Zach and Brian
called a great game Lon Month terrific, terrific performance. But the uh last
the Pittsburgh game, it was, well, we we we didn't get to
the to the Chase Brown plays. And then this week it was when we

(25:45):
had this, it was we wehad to get to it because we had
it. Like you're allowed, you'reallowed to move plays up and use them
at places where you didn't think youwere and you're allowed to go, you
know what we're gonna We're gonna crossour quarterbacks play. We'll cross that off
and you know, just maybe tryit next week, maybe next week.
Save it from when you're maybe scofflinga little more. Yeah, I don't

(26:06):
think there's anyway it was like there. It's pretty rare in the press box.
I mean, I've covered any numberof games with the people that sit
around me, and that we getsort of in aghast reaction. I've kind
of seen most of it, youknow where there's That was one of the
most disbelief reactions from all of usthat I think I've I've been to of

(26:30):
just I can't believe that they actthat actually just happened. And they called
that in this spot when when allof the game was what it was.
I was at an establishment in northernKentucky and the sound that the establishment made
you would have thought somebody like emergedfrom the kitchen lit on fire. That

(26:52):
was this. It sounded like likeif somebody decided to just take their pants
off that you didn't want. That'swhat a few dozen people of Dickman,
That's the sound everybody made, ideaand then and then like some random like
expletives here. So I that moment, I'll never I'll never forget that sound.

(27:15):
Yeah, at the bar watching thatplay, which the play took like
a month and a half to unfold. Ye like you could see it just
in real time, like oh no, don't Tyler, Tyler, don't do
it, don't do it, juststaring it down like you know what,
I'm gonna throw this. It waslike just run forward as far as you
can and fall over at this point. Yeah, and then and then it's

(27:37):
like, oh, he's gonna throwit, and then you realize, oh,
it's going right out another person. But see, now we can all
laugh about it because the exactly, let me tell you what the tone of
this show, oh, would havebeen if they had lost that game thirty
four to thirty one in overtime, right, I mean, how are you
not talking about those the two playsof Dax Hill dropping the interception? Yeah,
I mean that that sequence spell likethat's how you blow a game where

(28:00):
your quarterback has a record performance,is by two chock the ball down my
man or catch it one of thosetwo. Either one will watch it.
You should catch it, but youcan't let the other guy catch it and
stay in bounce and you can't dothat. I can't believe he caught it,
but yeah, I mean, there'sthere's no doubt that that felt like,
man, now you've got to tryto overcome that and they did,

(28:22):
and they did. Jake Browning didwas awesome, unbelievable. All right,
Uh, well, you have alot of work to do. I do.
I guess, yeah, yes, hang on and listen to me.
Talk to Rick if you want, that's fine. Tell tell Rick how big
of a fan I am willing togo over here, and Uh, we're
gonna write a little bit more aboutI guess. Uh, Jake, I
have. I'll spill a little bitof I'm writing a little bit about the

(28:44):
screen game. Does that excite you? Is that more exciting than run fins?
No? Well, yeah, becauseI said that to Tony yesterday and
I said, I don't mean thisto sound like it's going to sound Jake
Browning's really good at throwing screen passes. Yeah. Well, certainly that naked
bootleg to Mitch Wilcox he had wasit was pretty remarkable. But they have
been unbelievable at screens and I couldn'tbelieve what I saw when I dove into

(29:07):
the numbers of them throwing screen passesto Joe Mixon. That will be my
tease for my story tomorrow. Wow, there you go. So the off
season talking point is we talked aboutJoe Mixon's future where the team is going
to be. It's great A kew. Well, you know he's elite when
it comes to the screen game.Read that in the Athletic. I don't
know if it's any part of theconversation, but you'll be able to at

MKU basketball Tonight, the Norths areon the road against Illinois State and looking
for their fifth consecutive win. Thatgame is going to air tonight on Fox

(30:38):
Sports thirteen sixty. You could hearthe game with Jim Kelch and Rick Brewing,
who I assume is joining us fromNormal Illinois. He is also the
proprietor of Musketeer Report dot com.Obviously, Xavier with a loss last night
to Oakland that has raised a lotof questions and concerns, and Rick is
here to address them. It's agood have you what's going on? I'm

(31:02):
good? No, how are youdoing? I'm well, how's normal?
It's normal. I would say it'spretty normal. It is a little bit
cold, but not a whole lotgoing on. Okay, Well, you
know some cities the name describes theplace, and I guess that would be
where Illinois State is. What hasbeen the most troubling aspect of how Xavier

(31:23):
has lost these last three games.Mo. I think the biggest thing I
keep coming back to is that Idon't know that it's a fluke, and
I don't know that there's an answerin a way for them to get better
at it. The thing I keepseeing is, yeah, you want to
say, well, they should justbeat Delaware and they should just beat Oakland,
they're better than them. I'm notso sure that they're that much more

(31:45):
talented than these teams that we're sayingthey should just be able to go out
and beat. And I think that'sthe most concerning thing they have right now.
They're a team that is led byConference USA transfers that clearly do not
look like biggie level starters, andthe younger guys on the team, the
freshmen, the international guys, theydon't look ready to be the leaders of

(32:07):
a group or or good enough tocompete at the Big East level either just
yet, even if they're going tobe very talented down the line. So
I think that's where I'm left isthat while they've shown some good flashes against
Purdue and Saint Mary's and Houston wherethey looked tough enough to maybe compete with
the upper tier of the Big East, I don't think we've seen against some

(32:27):
of the other games. I don'tthink we've seen enough talent from this group
to really be a team that's goingto win many games. Yeah, but
I mean you talk about like BigEast caliber players, Delaware and Oakland aren't
Big East teams right exactly. Andthat's the issue. I mean, it's
you know, everyone's saying, well, Zavi's the Big East team, so
they should just be able to overwhelmDelaware and Houston, and who cares about

(32:51):
the matchups or anything else. It'sjust Xavier's more talented. And what I
keep seeing when I watch these gamesback is a team that's not that much
more talented than theriz as in leagueteams or the CAAA teams that they're playing
in the non conference. And that'swhere I'd be really concerned if I'm azaier
Man. Now that being said, there is still that Purdue performance. There
is still the Houston performance where theylost those games, but they at least

(33:14):
had some fight and they looked toughenough to compete. So maybe that's the
saving grace, and maybe you lookto those and say they will continue to
get better and it'll be okay. But right now there is a lot of
reason to be concerned. Yeah,I mean, you know, look,
there's a talent efficiency. I thinklast night, specifically the layup line that
Delaware had on the road on theway to scoring eighty seven points was most

(33:38):
troubling. And I don't you know, there's obviously the shootout looming on Saturday.
I don't know how that gets fixed. I certainly don't know how that
gets fixed in the short term.Yeah, I mean, at this point
when it comes to like the shootouton Saturday, you're looking for anything in
terms of motivational tactics, right,it's all about heart, grit out,

(34:00):
a way to fire these guys upand make them realize what a desperate situation
there is they're in when they're aboutto lose their fourth straight home game with
two of those being by games.Because you're absolutely right in terms of like
the tactical or how you get bigger, physical, more, you know,
more physical and tougher over the nexttwo days, that just ain't gonna happen.
So it's going to have to comefrom a mindset thing and just an

(34:22):
emotion thing. And you hope thefact that you've been more battle tested in
Cincinnati and that you're going to haveyour home crowd behind you can really play
a huge role in this game.Yeah, you know, it's a lot
of talk, and it's it's almostinevitable when a team goes through a losing
streak like this, people talk about, well there's a lack of leadership.
When that's brought up. Is thatis that aimed at a guy like des

(34:44):
claude. Is it aimed at theroster trying to find somebody who emerges?
How do we interpret that? Imean, to be quite honest, I
think it'd be unfair to point atthis roster and this group of players and
say, you guys don't have aleader. I've looked back and be like,
well, yeah, because we're abunch of new guys who are just
thrown together and half of the guysare either from another country or a freshman.

(35:06):
So yeah, I don't really expectthe leader to have emerged from this
group just yet. And I thinkthat's the issue with roster construction. And
you know, maybe that's right ormaybe it's not. I mean, they
lost two experienced forwards that they weregoing to be heavily relying upon coming into
the year late in the summer,So I don't know that it's anyone's fault
necessarily that the roster is in thissituation now. But I mean it's very

(35:28):
clear that they do not have aleader. They do not have experienced players
that are able to step up duringthese tough times and when when they're facing
adversity. They don't have that presencein the locker room that has been through
these wars before, has come outon the other side and can pull them
together and be like, here's howit's done. So it is an issue,
but I'm certainly not going to throwthe players under the bus for that
when most of them just met eachother a few months ago. Rick Bororing

(35:52):
Musketeer Report dot com. You'll hearthem tonight NKU at Illinois State. That
game tips off at eight o'clock, pregame at seven thirty on Fock Sports thirteen
sixty. The Nors have won fourstraight. They're off to a two and
zero start in the Horizon League. They're obviously playing a non conference road game
tonight. What has gone right theselast four Yeah, Well, I think

(36:13):
part of it is just the competitionthat they've faced, right. They started
off with those tough road games. You give Middle Tennessee State, you played
on the road at Washington, Imean, EDK you really and then obviously
the Cincinnati gave was very difficult, even though it's not a long trip for
them, and they got boat racedin that game. So after, you
know, the first four games, only one win at the non Division one
team that you beat, you're kindof going, oh, where is this
headed? But since then, thelast four games, you know, they've

(36:36):
played lower level Division one teams, all of them were ranked to eighty four
or lower in ken Pom, andthey've handled business in those games. I
think the biggest thing that you've seenfrom a positive standpoint is NK you was
trying to play faster this year andtrying to score more points in an attempt
to when they play some of theselower level teams on the Horizon League,
be able to pull away from themand create some separation because last year they

(36:59):
were in so so many games thatwere low scoring they won, like sixty
two to fifty eight or sixty fourto sixty one, where they're playing great
defense, but they're just barely pullingout these wins. And so far we've
seen an improvement in that regard. They're averaging over seventy points per game.
You look at the Robert Morris andthe IUPUI games their first conference matchups.
They scored seventy seven and seventy onein those two games and hold held both

(37:22):
of those teams under sixty points. That's the recipe for success. So I
think from that standpoint, you've reallyseen a nice change from last season to
this season, and they've accomplished whatthey've been trying to do. You see
played Illinois State in I think Decemberof two thousand and seven, and I
remember going to a place. Ithink it was called Uncle Tom's Pancake House.

(37:43):
So I don't know if you're drivingback or coming back after the game,
but if you're there tomorrow morning thatpancake house, if it's still around,
I could not recommend it more.Okay, well that is good to
know. I don't think we'll havetime to get there this trip, but
I will put it on my list. We like to he places to go.
I like Tony's Diner is where weate today. Jim Kelt, big

(38:04):
diner guy. It was fantastic TonyDiner in normal Illinois. Check it out.
Only I only remember the name ofthe place because I was with Chuck
Mayshack and he talked about it forlike five years after we ate there.
So it's ten points just got destroyed, and I remember the gym being pretty
cool. Yeah, that was Ithink mixed. Second year they got blown
out. That wasn't close. Yeah, I do remember that game now.

(38:29):
I think that was like in themiddle of that long losing streak they had
that year. It was right aroundthe time the Crosstown shootout as well.
It was awful, it was miserable, but the pancakes were good. And
really, at the end of theday, if you get a good meal
out of it, that's all thatcounts. Have a good call tonight,
man, Thanks so much, ThanksMell. I appreciate it. Rick Burring

(39:59):
the biggest bite I've ever seen anybodytake. That is unbelievable. It looked
like an egg snake there. Man. That was impressive. We're here for
the next two. Nobody's gonna takethat away from you. That sandwich,
the more Line Lockerhouse Club is aterrific sandwich, and so well. We

be here that is. I'm gonnado that a week from tomorrow. So
come on out to the Morelined Lockerhouse, Moca Cigar, have a bourbon,

(40:43):
get that club sandwich and eat itin two bites, like Mike just did.
I don't know. We're here tillsix o'clock. Chad Brendle, you
see as a new quarterback. We'regonna find out about him coming up in
just about ten minutes. And ourweekly chat with one of the experts from
Orthos Sincy, doctor Nick Gates onCam Taylor, Britt, Trevor Lawren's injury,
Kenny Pickett injury, and I thinkthere were some who were a little

(41:04):
taken aback by the size of thatthing that Joe Burrow was wearing on Monday.
We'll ask doctor Gates what that wascoming up in just about twenty five
minutes, got some good news froma Reds perspective yesterday. The MLB Draft
lottery took place last night. I'llbe totally honest with you, I had
no idea this was happening. Iknew Baseball had a draft lottery. I

(41:25):
did make sense that it would beat the winter meetings where nothing is really
happening. But the Reds had apoint nine percent chance of getting the top
pick. They got the second overallpick. The last time they had the
second overall pick twenty seventeen, theydrafted Hunter Green. The year before that
second overall pick, they took NickSenzel. They also took Kurt Stillwell forty

(41:51):
years ago in nineteen eighty three. Now, had we done it the old
way prior to the lottery, theReds would have had the fifth, i'm
sorry, the fourteenth overall pick instead. In the draft next July, they'll
have the second overall pick. We'llask some folks as the weeks and months
unfold whether or not this is agood year to have the second overall pick,
but good for them. What that'sgonna mean for next year is nothing,

(42:15):
because they're not gonna draft until July, and that guy's not gonna help
the team next season. This remindsme of one of my favorite sports takes
and maybe my least popular. I'manti I don't want to say I'm anti
tanking. That's not accurate, butI do think we have too much tank
talk in sports. I like incentivizingpeople who do a good job. I

(42:39):
like incentivizing people who try. Ilike incentivizing people for good work. If
I ruled sports, which I thinkI should, the way drafts would work
would be whoever just won the championshipwould get the number one overall pick.
Now, the Reds obviously didn't justwin the championship, but they did have

(43:01):
a winning record. They did,on some level try to win. I
think they were little taken aback bythe success that they had. But I
mean, it's it's not like theReds went out of the way to feeld
a bad team last year. Theypromoted some guys who have a chance to
really really help. I think sportswould be so much better if one of

(43:21):
the spoils of victory is you getthe number one overall pick if you win
the championship instead of the last pickin the first round. Like, you
know what I like. I likeit when the best companies get rewarded.
The best companies with good bosses andgood pay structure and great culture, you
know, they oftentimes kind of getthe first crack the best possible employees.

(43:45):
I think the best run organizations shouldget first crack at the best possible employees.
Like especially in baseball, where youknow, maybe there's not blatant tanking,
but you know you have owners whojust genuinely don't try. And you
know, I think what's happened inOakland with the A's is an absolute sham.
I feel bad for baseball fans there. I don't know if that's a

(44:07):
great baseball market. I know theA's essentially sabotage whether it was going to
be a good baseball market. Theyquit on that city, they let the
stadium rot. But you know what, I love the Kansas City Royals,
who didn't even try, lost onehundred and six games. They didn't get
the number one overall pick. TheOakland A's lost one hundred and twelve games.
They didn't get the number one overallpick. Teams that blatantly didn't try

(44:30):
should not get rewarded. You shouldpick last than every round. Heck,
I sort of think like if youif you have the worst record in any
sport, you shouldn't get a firstround pick. First round. The number
one overall draft choice is a bailoutfor bad organizations. So there was a
part of me, as a Redsfan, awesome second overall pit better chance

(44:50):
of getting a guy who could helpyour team down the road than if you
picked fourteenth. Not that a guywho's taking fourteenth can't end up being a
superstar one day, but it justwarmed my heart that a team that had
a winning record now has a chanceto get the number one overall selection.
The Indian the Indians. The Guardiansare sort of a weird situation. They
did not have a good year lastyear. They have parted with a lot

(45:12):
of really good players. But theGuardians look at the number one overall pick.
They didn't even come in last placein their division. Oh, they
finished twenty games in front of theteam to finish in the last place in
their division, which was Kansas City. That warmed my heart last night seeing
a team that won more than alost getting the second overall pick. I
wish. I wish that was justbaked in. I wish that was just

(45:35):
built in. If you like inthe NFL, Man, how cool would
it be Bengals win the Super Bowland then next year get the top pick.
Like the way we do it now, we still have franchises that have
no clue what they're doing. Youcould still have the parody that you're looking
for in the NFL. Every yeartwenty teams are about the same as each
other. I love rewarding excellence.I love rewarding good hard work. I

(46:01):
love rewarding being a well run organCrappy organization shouldn't be rewarded, whether it's
in sports or in real life.Man dopey managers and dopey owners and moronic
leaders, people who are out oftime. It just shouldn't be rewarded.
Well run organizations, good management, good ownership, good structure, good execution

(46:27):
should be rewarded in every single way. And yeah, you win a trophy
and you get a ring, andyou get the financial rewards that come with
it. It'd be awesome in everysport at the team that won the whole
thing got to draft number one overall. The Reds aren't drafting number one overall.
They didn't win the whole thing, but then getting the second overall pick
with a winning record, there wasa part of me that that made me

(46:51):
feel really good. And it goesbeyond just rooting for the Reds. The
UC Bearcats have a new quarterback andhe's from about would you say, two
hours west of here. It tookme forever to get to Bloomington last time
I went. We'll find that abouthim and if he's actually going to be
the starter next year from our buddyChad Brendle Bearcat Journal dot com. He

(47:13):
joins us when we come back. We're at the morelaned Lockerhouse downtown on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. It'stwenty two after four ESPN fifteen thirty Molegger
at the Morelan Lockerhouse downtown. TheUniversity of Cincinnati has a new quarterback.
Brendan Soresby, who played last yearredshirt freshman at Indiana University, announced that

(47:36):
he is committing to play next seasonat UC. And he's a guy who
started the last six games for Indianalast year. He threw for nearly sixteen
hundred yards. He accounted for nineteentouchdowns, and to tell us more from
Bearcat journal dot com, which iswhere I read that almost verbaid him as
our buddy Chad Brendle, who Ibelieve and correct me if I'm wrong,

(47:59):
is hosting this show tomorrow. Isthat correct? That's the plan. I've
got a thirteen year old with theflu upstairs, so as long as it
doesn't yeah, yeah, yeah, well you know that matters most. But
as of now, we'll plan onhearing your voice tomorrow. Tell me about

(48:22):
Brandon sorosby a good size kid.You know, it's six three, about
two hundred and thirty pounds, gota big arm. Is a guy that
you know, it's really hard toget a full gauge on on what his

(48:42):
numbers from Indiana mean, one becausehe had a terrible offensive line and two
they had essentially no running game atall, so that's putting it a lot
on a freshman quarterback. But stillthree for fifteen touchdowns. He only had
five interceptions. Three of them werein the last game against Purdue, So
in the first five games, youknow, only two picks for a freshman,

(49:06):
that's pretty good. He's not asmuch of a you know, I
don't think you're gonna call a lotof designed running plays for him. But
he can move, he can escapepressure, he can get out of the
pocket, and you know, Ithink we would all agree, like the
run game is fine. It didn'tlook like they needed a quarterback like to

(49:30):
run for the offense to work. And what they desperately needed was somebody that
can move the vault down the fieldvia the pass, and Henry Jones just
didn't end up being that guy.And I think this is a move in
the direction of let's in this leagueespecially, you better be able to pass
the ball if you want to keepup. And you know, we saw

(49:52):
a lot of If you remember inthe preseason, I talked a lot about
what's going to happen when you geta game that's twenty one to seventeen or
seventeen to ten or whatever, andthen the opposing team gets that touchdown to
go up two scores. Can youmove the ball down the field and answer
or are they going to pull awayfrom you? And more often than not,

(50:15):
they pulled away, and that's becauseyou couldn't move the ball via the
pass. And hopefully this is amove in that direction. I'm looking at
Brendan Soresby's recruiting profile at twenty fourto seven sports dot com. He got
offers from Navy Army, Fordham,Delaware, Lamar, Western Carolina, Texas

(50:35):
A and M Commerce and Abaline Christian. So how did he end up at
a at a Big ten school? So Indiana lost a commitment right like towards
signing day last year from a highlyrated quarterback and they were kind of scrambling
and landed on Sorsby, And itturned out to be a pretty smart development

(50:57):
because he ended up, like wetalked him, winning that starting job through
the end of his red shirt freshmanyear, but kind of a late late
bloomer, late developer and a guythat you know, kind of came into
his own during that the red shirtyear that he took off physically, and
you know, that's kind of areally good hit for them in a scramble

(51:19):
situation to be able to go graba guy that that turned out to be
pretty good that didn't have a wholelot of recruiting interests. Is the idea
of this guy's going to be thestarting quarterback or is he going to be
in some sort of spring ball oror fall camp competition. I'm sure we
will talk about camp competition, butgiven what we know about the quarterback portal

(51:43):
market, I would guess he hasa leg up on being the starter.
As we get the springball. Arewe allowed to speculate as to what a
kid like this costs? We canspeculate all we want. I mean,
I know the top of the quarterbackmarket guys. Yeah, the rumor is

(52:04):
seven figures. Okay, I don'tI don't think he's up that high,
But I mean I'm guessing some zero'sand maybe a crooked number at the at
the beginning of those zeros. Ithink he will be doing well for himself
when he gets to the Cincinnati Whatdo you What do you make of of

(52:25):
the comings and going so far asit relates to the transfer portal and UC
so, I think they they dida lot of what I talked about,
which is, if you're going toimprove, if you're going to make an
improvement next year, you have toclear some space towards the bottom of the
roster. Guys that you know wereprobably loop thickle guys that came in and

(52:49):
didn't really see time on the twodeep and didn't really see much of a
path forward or if they were onthe two deep, you know they were,
they were second string and not lookinglike they were moving up. A
lot of those guys have gone intothe portal. I think you've done some
good work cleaning up maybe some lockerroom deficiencies, some guys that maybe weren't

(53:12):
pulling in in the right direction, and now we see what they do in
terms of replacing that with middle toupper spots on the roster. But here's
the thing, though we haven't talkedabout this much. Xager Henderson has a
year another year. So if hecomes back and you've got your offensive line

(53:34):
back, and you've got Corey Kiner, and now you've got Brendan Soresby.
I think you know, you've gotAaron Turner, and you've got Barry Jackson,
who obviously they're very high on inthe slot. You go out and
get a number two to be oppositeXavier Henderson if he does decide to return.
I think you're feeling pretty good onoffense, and that allows you to

(53:57):
go out and say, hey,we need to rush end, we need
some work, some serious work inthe secondary. I think we all you
know, saw that pretty clearly. But I think this move here and the
returners that we've seen. You've gotyour All American defensive tackle, your All
American punter is back. Your rungame that was number six in the country

(54:20):
is intact. All of a sudden, the roster doesn't look as empty as
we is. It maybe felt threeweeks ago. Assuming Kelsey feels better.
You've got three hours in for metomorrow, and I'm sure you'll devote a
significant chunk of it to the tothe shootout. So I'm not going to

(54:40):
steal that thunder, but I amgoing to ask you this the line for
the game. I know you're nota better but the line for the game
will come out on Friday evening. What do you think the point spread will
be? I mean, if youlook at ken Palm, which I don't
know how much that has really absorbeda zab your loss last night, it's

(55:02):
pretty much a pick them. Ithink if I was setting it, I
would say Cincinnati two and a halfthree point favorites. You have to yes,
it feels bad looking at Xavier losingto Oakland and Delaware, but you
also have to acknowledge that they playedPurdue and Houston pretty well, and like

(55:25):
you have to take that into account. So I know, you know,
you see fans are chomping. It'sthe bit, rightfully. So when your
rival loses to Delaware in Oakland, like you're thinking, you're going to go
into their place and win. Butit's not going to be a cake walk.
I don't believe if I believe,it's going to be very much a

(55:46):
battle. And you know, Ijust maybe I'm just wounded from years of
so watching games at that place. So I think that's where most Bearcad fans
are, right. I think that'sI think that is exactly how most Bearcat
fans feel. Where Xavier is themore battle tested team, I think Cincinnati

(56:08):
has looked like the better team. But even if you feel like you see
should win, it's at the CentaCenter. And so it's just that for
a lot of folks, is justgonna trump all, as does the history
of an XU player that you don'texpect to have a big offensive game,
having a big offensive game, especiallywhen the game is there. You want

(56:30):
to want me give you a name, please, Trey Green, he's the
guy. So Trey Green. Therewas Trey Green. And you see we're
pretty hot and heavy in the recruitingprocess, and ultimately Wes Miller kind of
felt like looking at a team withMike Adams, Woods and David de Juliet's

(56:53):
at point guard, felt like heneeded more athleticism at point guard and that's
not exactly like the strength of TreyGreen's game. So you know, it
kind of broke off their their pursuitof Trey Green, who then committed to
UC's rival. H He's gonna wantto show you see that. You know,

(57:14):
maybe they they er they made anerror in judgment on the direction they
wanted to go as point guard. That's my fear. Okay, all right,
Well or Dalan swain who I love, I love, Yeah, I
love Dyland Swainson too, like asophomore in high school. All right,
Well, most importantly, hope yourdaughter feels better. Hope you're on tomorrow.

lot about Kate Browning. Why not, He's the reigning a star quarterback,

orthopedic urgent care at five Tri Statelocations and they have extended evening and weekend
hours in Edgewood and Anderson. Thefolks and Anderson took care of my daughter's

(59:49):
broken ankle. You can learn moreat orthosinc dot com. That's orthos ci
NCY dot com. Doctor Nick Gatesfrom Orthos Sincy is with us. We
have injuries to talk about. Let'slet's start with Trevor Lawrence, who unfortunately
suffered that injury against the Bengals onMonday night, and it originally looked bad.
Now they're saying it's actually not onlynot that bad, they're going to

(01:00:12):
try to have him play this weekend, which certainly seems far fetched in relation
to how he felt watching him onMonday. He's dealing with a high ankle
sprain. Walk me through the differencesbetween a high ankle sprain and quote,
a normal ankle sprain. A typicalankle sprain is when you turn your foot,

(01:00:32):
turn your ankle inward, stretch andor tear some ligaments down right near
your ankle bone, even just belowthat close to your foot. A high
ankle sprain is a stretch and orcomplete tear of ligaments that are five or
six inches four or five inches abovethat bone that sticks out on the on

(01:00:57):
the outside of your ankle. Ithappens with a different mechanism and this is
really interesting on the video and livethat we saw with Trevor Lawrence, so
his video shows his foot being rotatedoutward as opposed to the typical aword ankle
spring and that stressed isn't tear adifferent set of ligaments. I'm gonna ask

(01:01:17):
you a question about Monday, andmaybe maybe you're equipped to answer it,
maybe not. But he suffers theinjury and understanding that this is you know,
this is the face of that franchise, right it's the quarterback. He
hobbled off the field. He hobbledto the tunnel. The TV cameras show
him in the tunnel, I guessgoing to a room where he can go

(01:01:37):
through an X ray or an MRI, or maybe just a locker room.
And he's walking. Why did theykeep him on his feet after suffering that
injury? You know, I noticedthe same thing though, and I thought
it was kind of interesting. However, I'll tell you this, I'm heaving
it on the sidelines of football gamesfor twenty years. I'm a big fan

(01:01:58):
of letting the athlete come off thefield like that if it's appropriate. Their
first evaluation of him was on thatfield looking at his ankle, and they're
doing a physical exam of that ankleand that leg right there before they get
him up. It's very possible andvery appropriate to be able to do that
evaluation and see that it's safe toassist that athlete off the field putting a

(01:02:21):
little bit of weight on his footcompared do we do we need to get
the cart, I'll tell you that. So that's the main thing. I
have no problems with what they did, and I think I was a big
fan of that. I still ama big fan of doing that when it's
appropriate. Yeah, I've seen I'veseen I've seen some athletes jump on that
cart at times when they don't needto. I've seen teams medical staff put

(01:02:44):
them on the cart when maybe it'snot necessary. Some of these athletes and
maybe Trevor's like that, I don'tknow. They feel better walking off the
field if it's appropriate. So itmakes him feel better and it kind of
signifies the level of the injury. All right. So I mentioned that at
the top, they're leaving open thepossibility he's going to play this week,
and you know, you read reportsthat say they're going to do everything they

(01:03:05):
can. Jacksonville and the medical staff, they're going to do everything they can
to get them ready to hopefully play. Walk me through what that might look
like. Everything they can first isa completion of that evaluation with X rays
and MRI of that ankle. Youget a full evaluation of your exam,
your X rays, and the MRIthat's been done already. I'm quite sure

(01:03:30):
once the decision is made if thisis non surgical, and I don't know
that we know that yet, everythingyou can includes the best compression ice device,
the stages of physical therapy for anangle sprain if the high if the
high ankle sprain is not as severeas others, it'll go through an ankle

(01:03:51):
sprain protocol based on the severity ofthe injury, and everything they can is
going to be iceing it down, compression, get the swelling down, see
his range emotion strength, and seewhat that's like in a week. That'll
be very dependent upon the severity ofthe injury. Doctor Nick Gates from Orthosinsia
is with us. Let's talk aboutanother quarterback and another high ankle sprain.

(01:04:13):
This one though, has required surgery. I'm, of course referring to Pittsburgh
Steeler QB Kenny Pickett, who hadtightrope surgery to deal with this high ankle
sprain. He's going to miss atleast a little time. What is tightrope
surgery tightrope. Surgery is the surgicalrepair of a high ankle sprain, a
high ankle sprain. To get alittle bit more in the weeds, the

(01:04:35):
ligament you tear in a hind sprainis called your sin dosmotics, ligaments,
or sindismosis. The tightrope is adevice we use to repair surgically those ligaments
and then protect them while they're healing. This is a great example that two
of these athletes were talking about betweenwhat might be a more minor stretch sprain

(01:04:57):
of that high ankle ligament compared toa complete and total tear. A complete
and total tear of that ligament requiressurgery, and a tight rope is a
device. Quite frankly, it's gottena whole lot of publicity in the last
couple of years, but we've beeninserting tightropes for cinismontic injuries ten going on

(01:05:18):
fifteen years to tell you truthm Soit's the surgical repair of a more severe
tear of that Ligamenty how often doesa high ankle sprain require surgery? It's
tough to answer that because there area lot of high ankle sprains that are
Grade one or what are we calledminor or even Grade two that are stable.

(01:05:39):
So I would say a high anklesprain in isolation is quite frankly usually
treated non surgically. A high anklesprain in isolation that is complete and severe
they require surgery. So it's definitelythe smaller percentage of hind sprains that get
surgery. They want him back. They think he could possibly come before the

(01:06:00):
end of December. The Bengals playthe Steelers on the twenty third of December.
How realistic is that timeline? Ithink it's realistic. Again, I'd
have to say, not knowing theseverity, there has been a move towards
using this tightrope. We've seen itin college a couple of years ago.
When Tua came back. There's amove towards using this and not just the

(01:06:24):
severe but maybe the more grey zoneinjuries to assist in that rehab. So
it's very possible that he could returnto play in three to four weeks.
All right, let's talk about twoBengals. Cam Taylor BRIT's on IR now.
He originally suffered a quad injury acouple of weeks ago in the game
against Baltimore. Now he's on IRwith an ankle injury. Is it possible

(01:06:45):
that those two issues are related toeach other. I think it's highly unlikely.
Is it possible that you're guarding oneinjury and it's sore and therefore you
don't you step a little different? And certainly that's possible. But the more
likely scenario is he's had bad luckand had two injuries with him. You

(01:07:09):
know, it's an ankle sprain, which I think for a lot of folks
sounds relatively benign, certainly in relationto a lot of the other injuries we
talk about. And yes, andyet they've put them on IR and he's
going to have to miss four games. How severe can a sprain be If
he has to miss at least nearlya month worth of games, it's not
very surprising to me, But you'reabsolutely right. It can be surprising in

(01:07:30):
the public because ankle sprains, asI explained to patients a lot and athletes
lot, they're grade one, gradetwo, grade three, grade three ankle
sprains take a long time to feelnormal and feel better. If he suffered
a severe grade three ankle sprain,I'm not surprised to see him out that
long. It can be tough. You can have a Grade one or two

(01:07:50):
ankle sprain, that's pretty mild thatyou can get back and ice down and
play through. So if I'm notsurprised to see that, but I definitely
see the confusion out there when yousee one Trevor Lawrence might be coming back
in a week, one Picket gettingsurgery, and one Cam Taylor bred out
for four weeks, you kind ofscratch your head. That's an indication to

(01:08:12):
me he suffered a more severe anklesprain and that will take time for him
to get his strength, and that'sgoing to be more of a lower typical
ankle sprain, and those are veryvery rarely treated surgically like a high ankle
sprain. Is your specialty lies withthe lower body ankles feet, I know
that, But I do want toask this about Joe Burrow. So I

(01:08:34):
think a lot of us watching thegame on Monday, I know there were
a lot of folks on social mediawho were maybe a little taken aback by
the apparatus that he was wearing afterhe had wrist surgery, and it was
a big, big brace. Hisarm was basically immobilized, and I think
there are some who thought, well, he might be in a wrapper might
have a cast on, but it'snot going to be something like that.

(01:08:57):
I frankly had no idea what toexpect. What how is that device that
he was wearing on the sideline. It caught me off guard a bit,
I'll admit, But when I thoughtthrough it, my guess is he's not
wearing that sling twenty four to seven. That sling is holding his shoulder and
an elbow immobilized, and his wristsurgery has in his injury. When you

(01:09:18):
rotate your elbow, there is somemotion at the wrist, so some upper
extremity surgeons will want to immobilize theelbow stop it from moving in order to
prevent wrist motion temporarily. On theother hand, I wouldn't be surprised that
they want to put a sling onhim just as a signal when he's walking
around the sideline that no one's bumpinginto him, grabbing him. You know

(01:09:41):
how things can happen on the sideline, and so it's just another signal to
a reminder to him and those aroundhim not to mess with his right up
for extremity. I would be verysurprised that he's in that sling full time.
Right now makes but I will.On the other hand, I'll admit
to you I thought it the immobilizationsplints on his hand and wrist was was
pretty significant. I'll agree with youthere. Yeah, I mean I didn't

(01:10:02):
really I didn't know what to expect, you know, I knew you'd be
wearing something. I wasn't even surewe'd see him. And then I saw
it and I went, well, that, but that looks big. That
looks like something really bad happened, which it did, so I guess it
makes sense to me. I wouldtell you I think his injury is significant.
I know, and obviously it's beenpretty quiet in the UH in the

(01:10:24):
public exactly what's going on. ButI think he's had a real significant injury
to his wrist and he's got along road to recovery. Yeah. No,
it your your your colleagues at Orthos, since you would concur Yeah,
but you know what, we haveJake Brown. That's whe we're good to

(01:13:47):
is a Cincinnati holiday tradition unlike anyother, and most importantly, it is
a huge fundraiser for the Cure StartsNow. It is great to have with
us Keith Keith Deseric, who isone of the founders of the Cure Starts
Now, and Mike from Santakan, one of the founders of this Cincinnati holiday

(01:14:08):
institution. Gentlemen, it's great tohave you both. Thank you for having
us. Thank you Santa Con.This started to correct me if I'm wrong,
like seven eight in that timeframe, right, two thousand and seven,
Cincinnati. Yeah, the original SantaCon was in San Francisco about thirty five
years ago, and now there's SantaCON's around sixty five different cities across the

(01:14:28):
country, right, and so thishas really sort of taken on a life
of its own where everybody that Iknow is dressing up like Santa Claus on
Saturday. Oh my gosh. Soflashback to two thousand and seven. We
had twenty seven santas meeting at FountainSquare and we said, all right,
let's go do this thing and we'lldo a pub crawl across Cincinnati and we'll
go visit fifteen venues. Two thousandand eight we had eighty five santas.

(01:14:53):
Two thousand and nine we had twohundred and fifty santas. Right last two
years, ten thousand santas each year. Incredible, incredible, amazing. It
just keeps getting bigger and bigger.People look forward to Santacon more than I
think they look forward to Christmas. It is now one of the biggest bar
nights in Cincinnati for many of thevenues that we participate. They have sixty

(01:15:14):
five venues participating this year. It'sincredible. So and it's it's more than
just people coming downtown and throwing ona Santa Claus outfit. Right, oh
my gosh, we have Santa Clausoutfits. We'll have alf outfits, Reindeers,
Easter, your bunnies, okay,Christmas presents, and then it's just
it's really just a fun way tocelebrate the holidays and just really just uh,

(01:15:42):
the bars will be packed, therestaurants will be packed, and it's
absolute craziness. I mean, whenyou go to the Banks, and if
you show up at the Banks onSaturday at noon, you will in the
Dora area, there will be threeto four thousand people dressed as Santa Claus.
It's going to be unbelievable crazy.Yeah, which, like I might
bring my daughter down just because youknow, some places you have to go

(01:16:03):
and pay to sit on his lap. Any one of them here will probably
spend some time with you. Well, you get female Santa Clauses and male
Santa Clauses. Yeah, all sortsof age Santa Claus. Yes, so
avoid the sixty five year old creepyguys. Yeah, that sounds good to
me, Keith, that the curestarts. Now, how did you guys,
and you know you guys have goneback now for a while. How'd

(01:16:26):
you guys get aligned with a bunchof drunk Santas well? I mean,
first of all, being at leastit's Santa Claus, so at least for
there, this is a training groundfor the real Santa of course. Yeah,
people dressed up like Santa. Yeah. Yes, And we're not gonna
say drunk Sannas. We're gonna sayfestive festive Santas. Okay, fine,
No, what we're all about iswe're about, uh, you know,

(01:16:47):
obviously having a little bit of fun. You know, this is cancer and
and the battles that we fight aretough enough, and so you need to
find that that that enjoyment and reallyget people engaged with it. And you
know, Mike and Bill reached outto us and said, we'd like to,
you know, have this benefits ahigher cause. We'd like to help
to find a cure for cancer byvirtue of this. And we've been associated

(01:17:10):
ever since then. And you know, we're Cincinnati based charity. Started here,
We've now grown to forty three locationsaround the world. Incredible. We
funded over thirty million dollars worth ofresearch and it comes from this type of
grassroots operation and frankly a little bitof the holiday spirit. So it's an
event that we're very proud to bepart of and frankly does a lot to

(01:17:31):
be able to fund some really goodresearch here and on a nationwide level.
Yeah, you know, you talkabout the growth of Santa Con. I
can't imagine how gratifying it is.And it's tough you're dealing with, you
know, just as far as I'mconcerned the Devil's work in cancer, but
so gratifying to have your work spreadbe so widespread around the world exactly.

(01:17:53):
I mean, we started this whenwe lost our daughter. My wife and
I lost our daughter to this backseventeen years ago, so actually the same
year that Santa Coon was started. And you know, passion was built at
that point to focus on those cancersthat we believe that could lead to a
cure for all cancers. We callthem the home run cancers. And we

(01:18:13):
started that not knowing where it wouldgo from there, and we started talking
about it on a blog that wethought was private, wasn't and suddenly it
went around the world and suddenly wehave this cause today that you know has
made some really big strides in itand you know, just this, just
this Santacon right here is going tochange a lot and allow us to be
able to fund brand new trials. And you know, it's important because the

(01:18:36):
end of the year is coming andwe got a lot of trials that we
haven't yet funded, and so wewant to get there. And my understanding
is like Santacon that could be afundraiser deep into the five figures and hopefully
even more. Yeah, I mean, especially when people show up for a
half a million santas here on Saturday, that's going to be fantastic. Yeah,
I think what's really cool is youknow when when you tell people the

(01:18:57):
cure starts now in this town, and I think, you know, the
visibility of Lauren Hill almost a decadeago certainly help. But now when you
say in this town, the cureof starts now, they know you,
they know the organization, they knowwhat's happening with the money, they know
in so many words, it's it'shighly legitimate. Yeah, yeah, I
mean we're an organization have about athree percent overhead, If that gives any

(01:19:18):
idea of how critical we think itis to be able to fund that research.
We do it in different ways thatno one else is doing it.
And you know, it's grown beyondjust Cincinnati. We are we're the largest
pediatric cancer charity here in Cincinnati. And you know, even in our partnership
since night Children's Hospital, they havenow the Cure Starts now Brain Tumor Institute.

(01:19:41):
They've renamed it with that in mind, and you know, Cincinnati's become
a hub for some rather stellar innovationsin cancer research. And so dive into
that for me because people hear cancerresearch right well as somebody who's on the
front lines. You know, let'stalk about the last sixteen seventeen years.
What it's been like watching some ofthe advancements that that we're starting to reap

(01:20:02):
the benefits of oh man, howmuch time you got? Now, this
is the good part. This isthis is the good part, because the
good part it's changed a lot.You know. We we have already identified
certain mutations so that we've now foundin many other types of cancer that can
effectively shut off the growth of cancercold. We have found new ways of

(01:20:23):
being able to attack these cancers sothat we can be able to get out
of them and be able to deliversome brand new therapies with her as well.
You even have some advancements that we'reexploring right now here with since any
Children's for proton radiation, which allowsyou to be able to target in ways
that you never did before. So, you know, just this small charity

(01:20:43):
here and this effort through Santacon, you know, being able to focus here
in Cincinnati has already changed everything weknow about cancer research in a very short
timeframe. All Right. So I'vegot folks listening who are like, you
know what I'm doing, and I'mpulling the trigger. I'm getting a Santa
outfit. I want to help raisemoney How does Saturday start? What do
people do? How does it work? Great? So, first of all,

(01:21:04):
we kick off at noon, We'llgo to midnight. Go to Cincinnati
Santa Con dot com and they canregister to be official Santacon and get their
suit and participate, or they canjust simply make a donation. One hundred
percent of our proceeds go directly tothe cure starts down. Wow. They

(01:21:24):
then, if they're going to participate, show up at the hard Rock Cast
you know, that's where we kickoff at noon, and then we spend
an hour there. And then wehave sixty five venues across the Cincinnati and
Kentucky area coming to Newport on theLevee, all downtown Factory fifty two participating
in Cincinnati Santacon. They are contributingmoney and then every time a Santa buys

(01:21:48):
a wristband to get the special dealsat the venues, they're contributing. So
get behind this thing and have fun. Participate. You can show up at
noon, you can show up atfour. You can go to the Crosstown
shoot Up and Crosstown Shootout, Townshoot Trust to Shootout. Thank you,

(01:22:08):
I know, I know. Andthey're pretty good and and and then go
from there. But it's just it'san absolutely wonderful cause and you can have
lots of fun, and it's justI can't tell you. We get tons
of emails every year after Santa Conssaying that's the most fun I've ever had.
Should showed up earlier, And andthe and the risk the wristband.
The wristband gets you like that withthe pedal wagon. I think we are

(01:22:30):
going to be going between the venuesthe discounts here we'll we find out just
a little while ago here at theMoreline House, the slide outside more half
off for Santa's on Saturday, ifthey if they have a Santa out,
pretty who's the guy that shows upan Easter bunny? Like it's just to
be different, Like what do wewhat are we doing? I'm not sure

(01:22:54):
who shows up as Easter buddy?Somebody from others. There's grenches and yeah
those branches, sure, yes weekwhere you see it all. But that's
fine. End Christmas spirit. Andby the way, our Santa's start at
age you know, eighteen nineteen andgo up to seventy five years old.
We have couples, we have groups. Our average group size is around fifteen
people. So this is the groupactivity cincinnatisantacon dot com is the website that

(01:23:18):
the cure starts. Now is thebeneficiary of this, and it is.
It is an awesome The first timeI encountered Santacon, I didn't know anything
about it. This is like twothousand, twenty twelve. I'd moved downtown.
I go to a place in OTRand I'm surrounded by Santa clauses and
I thought, you know, thesix year old version of me would think

(01:23:38):
this is the coolest thing ever. And I thought, it's just a bunch
of dudes who got together and decidedwe're gonna dress up like Santa. And
no, moron, it's Santa Con. So let's go. So I've participated
before the shootout. I gotta goto the Crosstown shootout. If if one
school wins, I might gone aSanta outfitage on you guys late show up
at Factory fifty two right afterwards, right in the corner. So are you

(01:24:00):
good? If you're coming down withyour daughter? You're gonna dress for Santa?
Here? Are you gonna? We'regonna see you in a in a
in a white beard and red suit. We could Yeah, I've i've you
know, before we had before wehad my daughter. We you know,
we have cousins and stuff, andso that the guy without kids would have
to dress up like Santa, youknow, for the family. And I

(01:24:21):
let a Santa Claus outfit pretty good, you know, I wasn't that believable.
You expect an old man as inmy thirties, but I could pull
off of Santa. All right,Well we expect pictures. Oh done,
it'll it'll happen, It'll happen.You guys do the Lord's work, man,
And and the work you've done, not just here, but the way
you guys have have reached your tentaclesto so many parts of the world.
The amount of people, the amountof families, the amount of kids you

(01:24:43):
guys have helped. Uh. Iwant you guys to go out of business
one day, that would be theidea with you and come here on my
show asking for a job or something. That'd be great. That's what we
want. But in the interim, the work you guys do is so important
and uh and and I I hopefolks listening are grateful. I know we
appreciate it. And like like wetalked about, this is our end of
year we have grants that we're stilltrying to fund. If folks can participate

(01:25:05):
Santacon, but also if they wantto participate in their end of year giving,
we'll take that too. Just theCure Starts Now dot org, Cincinnatisantacon
dot com. It's this Saturday. It's it's like there are like three holiday
traditions in Cincinnati that I can Yougot the lighting of the Tree, you
got Santacon, you got Christmas itselfright in the middle of the holiday season.

(01:25:26):
So we're good to go. Greatawesome stuff. Cincinnatisantacon dot com.
You can also check out the CureStarts Now at the Cure StartsNow dot org.
It's seventeen after five o'clock, gentlemen, Thank you very much, Thank
you. We're at the Morelin LockerHouse downtown Cincinnati on ESPN fifteen thirty,
Cincinnati Sports Station Cincinnati's e s andtwo after five. This is ESDN fifteen

(01:25:47):
thirty on Richard Skinner's with us inthe middle of a busy work afternoon slash
evening for him covering the Bengals forLocal twelve, Local twelve dot com and
on Twitter slash x at Local twelve, Skinny, what's going on? I'm
actually driving Bop. I was actuallyat Paul Brown Stadium, Takewase game work

(01:26:11):
today, got to basketball practice, driving back from practice, back to the
kid sunning scot open locker room. The crazy day schedule wise, it is
sort of bizarre. I guess yougot Jake Browning talking at six o'clock.
But you know when when you're theAFC Offensive Player of the week and you
talk whatever you want, that's exactlyright and we have to abide by that
because he is the AFC Offensive Playerof the week. I mean, how

(01:26:32):
crazy is that? I mean,it really is. Listen, I thought
I think I told you I thoughthe played good against Pittsburgh. I did.
Yeah, I know people scoffed that, and but yeah, you're an
idiot day. I mean, onepass right, the interception was bad.
He knew it was bad. Firststart. You're gonna probably make a bad
player two or maybe ten is alot of these quarterbacks do. But my

(01:26:53):
word, Monday night five incompletions,mo, I didn't realize. I thought
I had the math around this.Obviously there were two drops. Can argue
Tyler Boys was a drop or not? I mean it was close, but
you know he's good enough to catchthat ball. Jamar Chase clearly was a
drop. I remember the one throwaway. Zach said today there was a second
throw away that I guess I don'tremember. That's incredible, That's ridiculously incredible.

(01:27:14):
Yeah, I mean, I don'tthink i've I've ever seen and I
mean this, and you know you'veyou've covered the sport closely, but I
don't think I've ever seen a weekto week and I don't think he was
bad against Pittsburgh and all he wongreat, but I don't think he was
bad against Pittsburgh. I've never seenh two consecutive performances go from okay out

(01:27:35):
of this world like I saw withJake Browning last week. No, And
I remember, I mean, theJeff Blake situation was fun. And you
know that first game against Dallas,he just stepped back and launched away and
then he won. I think it'sa couple. He won a couple of
games after that. They lost theDallas game. It was fun to watch.

(01:27:56):
And then Jeff was a capable quarterbackand maybe that's all Jake's going to
be. But you know what,Jeff Lake was a starter. For a
while. Jake Bowning is your backupunless he's going to be a free agent
signing somewhere else after this season, because he just earned a bunch of money.
That's that's the funny part. Goodfor him, and it just shows
you sometimes none of us know. You don't know. I don't know.
Coaches don't know, front offices don'tknow until guys get in the fire,

(01:28:19):
and then you find out what youhave in those guys. Listen, I
guarantee you the forty nine ers hadno idea about Rock Party, or they
would have drafted him in the fourthround rather than the seventh. Laud and
lo and behold there's Rock Party.Undersize, underwhelming, under armed, leading
arguably, And you could argue withthis if you want to. Arguably the
best team in the NFL and yearnumber two just don't know until you see

(01:28:44):
it. Doc Wilson's arm strength,I know he's got this great arm,
this cannon thing. I mean, you just don't know. No, you're
you're right, I mean you knowit was No NFL result shocks me,
right, It's it's the NFL.Bad teams be good here, right,
But the way they won the game, the way it played out shocked me,

(01:29:06):
and part of it, part ofit made me frustrated, because I
thought the coaching staff had a greatgame plan. I thought Zach Taylor and
Brian Callahan called a great game.It was great to see them be creative.
I hated the second wide receiver pass, but we saw some variety to
the run game, and yet Icouldn't watch a lot of that and not
to think about, well, God, if some of this would have been

(01:29:28):
employed, if we would have seena little bit of this creativity against Pittsburgh,
we'd be talking about the Bengals beingtwo and o with Jake Browning as
a starter. Yeah. And Iget it from a coaching perspective, because,
like I said, I don't thinkthey knew. I think they hoped.
I know they liked, but youdon't know right until you're just a
straight especially in a game where itwasn't going to take you a lot of
points to win it. You wereprobably game planning to make sure Jake didn't

(01:29:51):
messed that up, and unfortunately duddid mess that up right with the interception
up seven to three, driving tomake it ten to three or fourteen to
three. That's when we against themthat night, and maybe the lesson was,
Okay, you know, if we'regonna go down, let's get out
swing. And I again I getfrustration from fans on that Pittsburgh game.
You know, I wrote about youneed more creativity in a run game and

(01:30:13):
need some bootleg stuff, and Iwas corrected by both Bryan Callah and Zach
Taylor, and I appreciate it isthat those are there hard to boot leg
against their ends, just they don'tcare about anything that they want to kill
in the quarterback And okay, butcorrect me. That's great. And then
it was all on Monday night againstcertain teams. That's a big chance to
be a big weapon for for JakeFounding as well as the running game's going.
Did they take too long to getChase Bay and there's a running back

(01:30:35):
baby, probably and he added somejuice. So I think it's one of
those ones where yes, I'm withyou, but at the same time,
now look forward and say, Okay, you want to lock some things in
a run game, You want tolock some things with your quarterback. You
now to trust your quarterback way morethan you did after the Pittsburgh are going
into the Pittsburgh game and let's seewhere this offense goes. We're on the

(01:30:56):
same page. I'll let you getto work, man. I do appreciate
it. Thank you as all allgood. Richard Skinner from Local twelve.
You can read his work at Localtwelve dot com. The Griffin Elite Baseball
Baseball the Griffin Elite Basketball Classic iscoming up, and involved with that event
is a guy who knows a lotabout the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout. He's

(01:31:16):
actually not just been on the benchfor it. He was the head coach
in the game. Did not gowell for him. But former UC associate
head coach Larry Davis is a partof that event. He is going to
join us in just a few minutes. I do want to mention this just
in the event that if you're aUniversity of Dayton basketball fan thinking of heading

(01:31:36):
to the game tonight at Udy Arena, or you've got tickets, or you're
on your way their scheduled to playUNLV tonight. That game is supposed to
tip off at nine pm. Therewas a shooting on UNLV's campus, and
to be quite honest with you,the extent of which I don't know,
I did see that a suspect hasbeen killed. I don't know if there

(01:31:58):
are any more. Because of that, the game tonight in Dayton has been
canceled. So if you're heading upby seventy five and you're gonna go watch
the Flyers tonight, that game hasbeen canceled. I guess multiple people were
shot on campus. The suspect.I'm reading the story here from the AP.
The suspect was found dead. Noimmediate news on the number of victims

(01:32:19):
or their status. But the gametonight, out of respect for that terrible
incident, has been canceled. Sono basketball at ud Arena this evening.
It is twenty eight after five o'clock. My name is Mogar. We are
broadcasting from the more Line Lockerhouse, downtown Cincinnati. Don't forget Bengals game plan
is coming up at six to zhofive tonight with Dan Horden Dave Lapham.

(01:32:43):
They are in studio in studio.Hopefully they leave the place nice. Last
week there when in studio made atotal mess. That is coming up when
we're done. My name is Moegar. We're broadcasting from the Lockerhouse, downtown
Cincinnati on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sportsstation. ESPATS coverage starts Sunday morning at
nine on ESPN fifteen thirty, theofficial home of the Bengals. If you

(01:33:09):
want to see some of the mosthighly touted and highly ranked Division one men's
basketball recruits before they play college basketball, you can check them out in Northern
Kentucky. It's part of the GriffinElite Basketball Classic, which is going to
be next weekend at the Griffin EliteSports and Wellness Complex. You're going to
have a lot of like national dudescome in and have their teams play against

(01:33:31):
area schools. This is a reallycool event. There's going to be a
ton of high end talent and it'sat a great venue as well. Involved
with the event kind of helping someof the coordination is a former NCAA Division
One head coach at Furman and obviouslysomebody whose name is known for his time
as the associate head coach at theUniversity of Cincinnati, and obviously someone who
knows the skyline Chile Crosstown Shootout andwhat it's like to be in that game

(01:33:56):
very well. Coach Larry Davis iswith his coach. It is awesome to
have you. Thank you for joiningus. Good afternoon. How are you,
Yes, sir, it's good togood to be on with you.
I appreciate you bringing me on.It's been man. Appreciate you. Yeah,
I appreciate I appreciate you coming on. It has been a minute.
Let's let's talk about the event itselfthe Griffin First of all, it's at
an awesome venue. There's a tonof high end talent. Give us an

(01:34:17):
idea about the event, yeah,I said, the Griffin Eleitue Training Complex
and it has three NBA courts. We're going to use the center court and
we brought in seatings to surround thecourt there. It is a state of
the art. If you haven't beenthere before, it's the state of the
art. Uh, place to trainand to have event and uh. The

(01:34:41):
Griffin family has been involved in basketballfor a long time around northern Kentucky.
Bob Grifflin, who was very successfulin business and built and ended up building
the complex, played at the Northernerand his son Jordan played at Cost of
Carolina and so the basketball runs throughoutthe whole family, everybody involved with it.
So what we have done is wehave but for the local teams to

(01:35:05):
come and play in it. Andthen we've brought four national teams and then
some other teams from Ohio UH andand top contenders in the in the state
or have a chance to win statechampionships and those kind of things. So
kind of get you started with kindof who's coming. We've got Huntington pep

(01:35:28):
out of West Virginia. Huntington Prepprobably has eight Division one players who have
already gotten Division one scholarship offers.UH. Their best player is a kid
named Darren Peterson who is ranked thenumber two player in the country currently by
most of the scouting services anywhere fromtwo to five. They will play on

(01:35:51):
Saturday night that there will be amatch up there against em excuse me,
Friday night, and we're going toopen up with this. On Friday night
at nine o'clock, they will upagainst Newport High School. And for those
of you in the community that don'tknow about Newport High School, they also
have a highly ranked kid hidden bythe name of Kaylin Kinney and he's number

(01:36:11):
five point guard in his class inthe twenty twenty sixth class. They also
have another six seven sixty eight youngman who's a junior and he is also
ranked among his in his class. He's in the top one hundred in his
class, and uh, you knowthat that should be a really good game.

(01:36:34):
James Turner is his name. Byby my account, currently we have
I believe it is thirty five kidsthat have been the all for Division one
scholarships already. We have got twoof the top five kids in their class
in the country coming, We've gotabout six of the top fifty in their

(01:36:57):
class coming, and we've got anothersix or so during the top one hundred.
So the talent is very, verygood. The couple of the other
games we'll talk about. Go aheadif you ask questions. If you get
a question, a question, andI'll get back to it. Yeah.
No, I mean I was goingto ask, like an event like this
where there's so much high end talent. You know, you you would go

(01:37:19):
to these events in your job asa recruiter. How how common or rare
is it to have during the seasonin actual high school games such a large
collection of top end players in onevenue in one weekend. Well, you
know, around the country, there'sprobably about only maybe another five or six

(01:37:41):
events in the entire country that canmatch up with us in terms of the
total number of talent that will behere. It's rare. It's rare to
have this many in one place overa three day period. Dayton of course
has Flying to the Hoop, whichis a is a very good event,
and they have a lot of talentthere. But you know, ours,
we'll match up with anybody in thecountry and there's probably only about five and

(01:38:03):
six of these that are at thislevel with this number of players. Incredible,
all right, So roll through theentire schedule for the entire weekend,
yes, I will. Okay,So on Friday night at seven o'clock,
Elder High will play IMG Academy.I am G Academy, as you know,

(01:38:26):
is produced Countlean's number of pros. The team they're bringing up has I
think by my account, has sevenDivision one players on it. So they
open up the event at nine o'clockwill be Huntington Prep versus Newport High and
that should be that should be agreat game there. I'm really excited about
getting a chance to see that thetop guards go against each other. Then

(01:38:49):
on Saturday at five o'clock, HarlanCounty out of Kentucky's one of the top
graded teams in Kentucky and be theSales High School will is coming into town
and they will match up. HarlandCounty has a couple of guys that have
already committed to Division one and sodoes the Sales. The Sales as a

(01:39:10):
young man that they call him,he's Baby Jokic. He's he's not quite
as tall as Jogic, but he'sa he passes handles and shoots. He
plays center for him and they sayhe's a phenomenal, phenomenal passer and and
just does you know, fun guyto watch, So that should be an

(01:39:31):
interesting matchup. Then at seven pointthirty on Saturday night, Lloyd High School
will play IMG Academy. IMG playson Friday AM Saturday. They're playing two
games with us Lloyd as E.J. Walker. He is a top
fifty guy in his class and thejunior class and an outstanding player. He's
being recruited by most of the Bigten Kansas Iowa for coming in to see

(01:39:57):
him. And then they come tothis actually to this event see because of
he's going to play against the highlevel of competition. So that should be
an interesting game as well, andyou get you know, if you want
to see some great local talent.UH Friday Friday Night obviously Newport and then
Elders. Elders is a good highschool program. They don't have quite the

(01:40:17):
number of Division ones and some ofthese other guys, but they'll be good.
And the Negatives is Saturday. OnSunday we have four games. You
have King's High School versus Deala Saleout of Louisville. Again. Dealer Sale
is also playing twice with us King'sHigh School as a young man by the
name of Tommy Clark who is inthe junior class. He's He's been offered

(01:40:42):
by multiple Division one schools. Theyalso have a kidney uh talent and knows
uh if you want to see somehigh flying action Tommy Clark and Sixth Street
white kid who can wind mill duckand he's so explosive and really shoots the
ball, so he'll be fun towatch. Then at two point thirty you

(01:41:02):
have Cooper High School versus Legacy Charter. Legacy Charter is one of our two
teams that plays in the National HighSchool Circuit. Nike and ESPN put together
a national High School leave as MottBird IMG and at schools like that.
Legacy Charter plays in that. Andthey're another team that has five Division one

(01:41:24):
players in their lineup at five o'clockCenterville High School out of Ohio, who
has won the state championship the lastcouple of years. They also have Xavier
commit Jonathan Powell, so he willthat'll be you know, if you're an
Xavier band, come over and watchthe future for Xavier, and they're gonna

(01:41:45):
play against one of my favorite teamscoming to the tournament in Moravian Prep.
Arabian Prep has the Ellis Brothers, and if you go on Twitter and look
up Ellis Brothers and just watch someof their tweets and some of their podcasts,
you will be entertained. And thesetwo guys can really really play.
Eli Elis, who's in the juniorclass, just committed to South Carolina UH

(01:42:09):
last a week and a half ago. UH was recruited by most of the
SEC. Very very good player andvery entertaining player to watch. Eli talks
a lot of smack, but hebacks it up, I can tell you
that. And then the last gameof the evening will be coming to Catholic
High School versus La Lamir. LaLa Mare's our second team that also plays

(01:42:30):
in the National High School Circuit andthey have three top fifty players in their
class. Uh. And of courseTOUGHCAF has some very good players. They
have a new young man that movedin from Arkansas never the name of Kayden
Miller. They've got a good youngsophomore guard named Cash Harney who dad was
run up in Mister Basketball in Kentucky, another atten named Braydon Brady Hussey,

(01:42:54):
and then happens to Hillis They've gotThey've got an outstanding group of kids there,
and again they are all being recruitedby Division wars. So uh,
it should be an exciting tournament fullof a lot of fun basketball to watch.
The Griffin Elite Basketball Classic It's goingto be next weekend Friday, Saturday

(01:43:16):
and Sunday. If you go toevent bright dot com and just search for
a Griffin Elite Basketball Classic, there'sall the info and how how you can
get tickets. It should be anawesome event. And again it's at a
terrific event the Griffin Elite Sports andWellness Sports Complex. Should be a lot
of fun. Yep. The presale tickets are ten dollars. The tickets
at the door are fifteen, Soif you you know, if you want

(01:43:38):
to get pre sale tickets at alittle better rate, go to uh and
you can also go to the Griffindelituedot com complex, I mean dot com
a website and they'll direct you tothe same that same ticket site. So
and I will uh, I willsay this, we have, we have
We're going to see about eight hundredpeople. It'll be an intimate setting.

(01:44:00):
So if you want to make sureyou get tickets, I would purchase tickets
ahead of time probably, and you'llenjoy your time there. The Griffin family
does everything first class. They havea great, great venue, like I
said, and they want everybody tohave a great fan experience, and they
go out of the way to makesure that things are done right. So

(01:44:25):
uh, we're we're I'm excited tobe involved with it. And I do
a lot of training there. Ihave a training business there now out of
out of their complex, so I'mfirst hand. I'm there a lot,
so I know no question about it. Next weekend the Griffin Elite Basketball Classic
Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Ifyou follow college basketball recruiting, you're familiar

(01:44:46):
with some of these names. Thereare going to be some high end dudes
there. Uh, all right,it's Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout week. You've
been on You've been on both endsof it, some some awesome wins and
some some appreciating losses. What memoriescome to mind when you think of this
game? Well, you know,it's, uh, it's a game like

(01:45:08):
no other. I mean, Icoached in the Big Ten, I coached
in the ACC. I was fortunateto be able to coach in both those
leagues. And I say this allthe time. I saw the great libraries
in those leagues. But I don'tknow that if any rivalry in any of
those leagues matched the intensity of theCrosstown shoot at is. It's really unique
in that And I have to sayone of my greatest memories is the very

(01:45:29):
first one because it was mixed firstteam, we didn't have a ton of
talent, and you know, forus, I mean Xavier, I believe
it was ranked coming into the game, and we were able to feed them,
we were able to knock them offthat first year, and that was
that was quite an experience, youknow, just the feeling of going in
and doing it and uh, youknow, it's uh, it's it's it's

(01:45:50):
a game like no other. Youtry to tell you your players and new
guys how intense this game is goingto be. And until they get in
it, it's hard to it's hardto prepare him for. It's not the
most pleasant memory because didn't win thegame. But but you did have a
chance to slide over and and andand be the head coach for a Skyline

(01:46:13):
Chili cross town shoot out. DDavis ruined it. But uh, yes,
what he did well remembers. Whatwhat do you think about when when
that night comes up? Well,I remember this. I remember going into
the game and D Davis was shootinglike seventeen from three and and the scouting
report was, hey, you know, you know, we don't want to
just leave him wide open, butwe will close short to him. You

(01:46:38):
know, we'll make him make shots. And so again if he didn't and
uh, I remember, uh youknow, uh the game winning shot was
made by because it was close, and the backbreaking shot was it wasn't d
Davis, he was, It wasblew It. Yeah, And I probably

(01:47:00):
made a bad coaching decision in thein the lineup in that Gary was guarding
blew It and he was a freshman, and I probably should have switched to
I had on it. Uh,but Blewett made a great shot, and
uh, it was a heck ofa game. We were right there to
win it. There's nothing like Ihave to say as an assistant, it's
fun. There's nothing like it beinga head coach in that game, though,

(01:47:23):
it's it's something else. Yeah. You know what I remember about that
game is d made his first threeand Dan Horde on the air said,
you know that's that's a shot Cincinnatiwill live with all day thinking, yeah,
you know he's not a great outsideshoot or fine. After the fifth
one, I looked at him asif to go, are you sure so

(01:47:43):
well, my if this, ifthis, uh this this will bolster exactly
what you're saying, our cuts, our kids. By about the third one,
we're looking at me going I said, all right, you got a
guard. Do you let me tellyou gonn laugh about it now? All
right? The Gryffin Elite Basketball Classicnext weekend. Some some awesome games,

(01:48:05):
some incredible talent, great facility.Again. Uh you can get tickets now,
check out event bright typing Gryffin EliteBasketball Classic and uh and you're good
to go. Coach. Good tohave you on man, Thanks so much.
Thanks A Lott Mo appreciate it,and uh, you know I enjoy
uh, you know, still listeningto Cincinnati basketball and you guys do a

(01:48:26):
great job in producing that. Andyou know, uh, I'm looking forward
to seeing the Crosshous shoot out thisyear. So uh, good luck,
have fun. You got to yougot a front row seat. You always
have the best seat now that. There's no doubt about that. Coach are
the best. Thank you, Thankyou all about Larry Davis. The Gryffin
Elite Basketball Classic next weekend. Someof the best d one talent uh in

(01:48:49):
the country. Music means we're done. Wow. Uh stick around. We
have two hours of wall to wallBengals talk with Dan Horde Dave Lapham in
studio. Bengals game plan. Youcan't beat that. You can't beat the
more lined Loggerhouse by the way,Chris Kendall markets jumping. They got a
fire going on out there. We'vegot the I excuse me, Ice Slide

(01:49:11):
kids eat free Wednesday with the purchaseof a twenty dollars Ice Slide ticket.
You can't beat it. It's perfect. It's a holiday season staple. It's
like Santa con A quick reminder,I'm not in tomorrow. On this show.
Chad Brendle fills in for me.I'll be broadcasting tomorrow night from the
Skyline Chili downtown as we preview theshootout. West Miller joins me. Sean
Miller joins me. We'll have bothwomen's coaches, Billy Chambers and Katrina Merriweather

(01:49:35):
as well. So the women's SkylineChili Crosstown shootout is happening as well.
A lot of ground to cover tomorrownight, so that'll be six to eight
tomorrow evening. Chad's in for mefrom three to six tomorrow afternoon. Thanks
to Mike Mills for producing on site. Thanks to Tarren Plan for producing back
in Kenwood. Thanks for the staffhere at the more Lined Loggerhouse as well.

(01:49:58):
