Speaker 1 (00:00):
Saturday for a game against Kalamazoo. They're actually home on
Sunday as well for a Mattine game. It's Saturday, it's
Cincinnati Three Ways Night, where the Cyclones aren't the Cyclones
for a night. Instead, they are three Ways. They're wearing
Skyline inspired Cincinnati three Ways jersey, and Justin Vive is
with us. I'm told he is the Cyclones resident Skyline expert,
(00:23):
which makes sense given the fact that he went to
school in the area, kind enough to join us. By
the way, he is currently tied for the all time
points record for the Cincinnati Cyclones, so if he gets
a point this weekend, he'll be the franchisees all time leader.
You may see history if you go to the game
on a Saturday night. Justin, It's awesome to have you.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
How are you.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
I'm just excited for hopefully the big turnout here on
Saturday and just the all around kind of cool event,
cool jerseys.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
When players join the Cyclones, what do you tell him
about going to Skyline.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
I think the thing I always say is you just
got to go in with an open mind. I mean,
there's guys from all over the country, all over the world,
and when some people here at chili and you know,
spaghetti and cheese. It kind of sends them the wrong message.
But I just you got to go in, you got
to sit down, order a bunch of options and kind
of just give it a go. And I would say,
(01:21):
you know, a good percentage of the time the guys
come back the next day in the locker room and
they're actually pleasantly surprised.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Yeah, this is what real leadership in the locker room
is all about. You know, the guy who's been here
for a while, who knows where to go get making
sure the guys go to Skyline and have a great experience.
More than anything you do on the ice, this is pivotal.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
I would say so myself. I mean I got kind
of turned onto it early on here and ever since
I've been a massive supporter. And you know, I'm just
pumped out. We're partnering with them again for another jersey.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
No, it's cool. The jerseys are are terrific.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
You.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Earlier this year we had you on when you played
in your five hundredth game as a member of the
Cincinnati Cyclones. You are a point away from becoming the
franchise as all time leader endpoints.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
What will that record mean to you?
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Kind of along those the same line as the last
time we chatted, I actually didn't really know where I fell,
like in the order of things, just because it's a
bit confusing with all the different kind of leagues and
the different franchises moving to different cities and stuff like that.
But Rudy actually kind of told me last week that
(02:36):
I was two back, and I was able to get
a point this past weekend, so now it's one back.
But no, it's I mean another kind of awesome milestone
to look back on and kind of you know, reflect
on an awesome career here in Cincy and the place
that I've spent the majority of my time, and you know,
place obviously that will probably be home for the remainder
(02:58):
of my career for sure, and probably well on into
my kid's future.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
You joined me, as I mentioned when you became.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
You know, you played in your five hundredth game, and
there was a very brief workstoppage in the EHL, and
I've been thinking a lot about the schedule, so I
want you to kind of take me into inside this weekend.
So you guys play a game match, You play a
game on Friday at fort Wayne. You're then going to
come back and play the Cincinnati three Ways night on Saturday.
Then you'll have a day game at three o'clock game,
(03:28):
but a day game against Kalamazoo on Sunday. What are
these weekends like when you're playing three games in two
cities in less than forty eight hours.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
The easy answer probably just a blur, you know, and
I mean with the game last night too. When you
play on a Wednesday, it really adds a wrinkle to
the week because usually you can kind of rest up
and gear up, kind of like a full week to prepare.
When you play Wednesday, it's kind of it's just it's
(04:02):
a lot of balance. You know, guys played last night,
and then today's more of like an optional recovery day.
And then you know you're in four Wayne Friday, get
back late two three a m. Saturday, turn around, play
Saturday night, and then the Sunday one that is usually
the one where you know, the word the blur comes
(04:24):
into it, saying, oh, you're kind of sleep deprived, you're sore,
you know, obviously tired, and but at the same time
it's you know, those are the games at the end
of the year that you know, if you miss the
playoffs by two, four, six points, whatever it is, you know,
you kind of look back to those those kind of
sleepy Sunday games where you're like, oh, man, I really
you know, I wish we brought it a little more
(04:46):
on that Sunday. We could have stolen one here or there,
and you know, it's the difference at the end.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
Of the year is for the young guys who are
just getting their first taste of of pro hockey, Is
this the time of year that can be most difficult
where you guys have been added for months and yet
that light at the end of the tunnel is still
way in the distance. Is this is this the hardest
time of year to make the adjustment for those young
guys just getting used to pro hockey.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
In the schedule one hundred.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Percent, I say every year, like the dog days between
kind of mid February to mid March are also, I say,
is kind of when seasons are you know, a lot
of times one or loss. Uh, you know, you're sometimes
you're a few points in kind of with teams chasing you,
or you're a few points out team like you're trying
(05:32):
to chase teams. So it's kind of that really kind
of moving in the standing time. But also a lot
of these guys played college hockey, so they're you know,
they only played thirty five forty games max, and we
just kind of hit that mark a few weeks ago,
so they're not really been used to playing this many games.
So that's definitely the biggest adjustment too.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
How much Olympic hockey did you get to watch?
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Quite a bit? Actually? I watched basically all the knockout
round and then I was able to watch the majority
of the US and Canada's all their round robin games.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Are you able to watch those games purely for enjoyment
as a fan or you like, are you putting yourself
on the ice? Are you watching it like a coach? Like?
Speaker 2 (06:20):
How do you consume those games?
Speaker 3 (06:23):
I would say a little bit of kind of comparing, contrasting,
kind of studying, taking some notes or whatever. But for
the most part, a lot is for enjoyment. You know,
it's such a kind of rare thing nowadays with them
not going to a few Olympics and stuff. It's just
kind of the ability to sit back and see best
on best is just so cool and just so fun
(06:46):
for obviously people that have grown up loving hockey like
most Canadians, so it's just really cool thing just to
be able to sit there and watch. I guess I'm
a little new unique, so I'm a dual citizen, so
I'm kind of neutral when it into the gold Dedal game.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
But yeah, so you had no rooting interest on Sunday morning.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Ah, Honestly, like so many people ask me, I now, officially,
I think spent exactly half my life in both country,
so right, I mean, and so that's kind of a
toss up.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
I guess technically, since I've played for Team USA in
the Junior World Championships and stuff like that, I leaned
towards the US when it comes internationally, but not by much.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
What can an event like that because I don't care
which country you were rooting for. Obviously here we were
rooting for the United States. It was just an awesome
sporting event, right, it was. It was great hockey. Folks
who typically don't watch a lot of hockey were like
completely invested. Can what can a game like that? What
can an event like that won by the United States?
What can that mean for hockey in this country?
Speaker 3 (07:59):
Oh? I mean it's massive, Like just I would say,
with the women doing what they did through the tournament
and just dismantling basically every team they played, and then
the men's come up and you know, some tougher, hard
fought games, but at the end of the day, they
also bring a gold back. It's like, I feel like
anytime I picked my phone up or turn on the
(08:21):
TV for the last week, it's something about the gold
medal hockey teams and just the US is so massive
and so many kids watching all that stuff that I mean,
it kind of that's how Canada got as big as
they are with hockey. Is you know, growing up, it
was just every four years, Canada's gonna win gold. They're
(08:42):
gonna have a good shot at it. Whatever it is.
It's just that's how you kind of grow up. And
you know, hopefully a lot of kids were watching those
games and you know stick with it, and you know,
hockey just continues to grow and produce more and more talent,
and you know, the game just keeps getting better and better.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Miami University, guy, do you follow the basketball team at all?
Speaker 3 (09:06):
I gotta come clean. I haven't up until this year.
It's kind of hard not to because they are on
fire and you know, anytime any team from Miami goes
on an historic run like that, regardless of the sport.
I feel like, as an alumni that played any other sport,
you're gonna, you know, take notice and kind of cheer
(09:27):
it on. It's just really cool to watch.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
I don't know anybody who loves aside for myself, I
don't know anybody who loves Skyline Chili more than Travis Steel,
the basketball coach at Miami. So when this season ends,
for you and for him, you guys got to have
like a Skyline sit down and talk all things RedHawks
basketball and hockey.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Okay, I would one hundred percent be down. I'd even
bring him one of the three Way jerseys from this
weekend if you want it.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Wow, all right, Well if he says no, I'll take it.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
But that's okay, I mean, you know whatever, we'll figure
out a way to make that work. Justin congratulations in
advance on becoming the leading point score in Cyclones history,
Have a good weekend, best of luck the rest of
the season, and enjoy Cincinnati Three Ways Night on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Thanks so much, awesome, always a blast coming on moh
I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
You got it. You're the man.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
That's justin Vive who are Earlier this year played in
his five hundredth career game as a member of the Cyclones.
And they're on the road at Fort Wayne on Friday,
then home on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is Cincinnati Three
Ways Night, where for an evening, the Cyclones become the
Three Ways. The jerseys are awesome. I love Travis Steele.
(10:45):
If he gets a jersey before I do, I'm going
to be upset.
