Speaker 1 (00:01):
Just really quick here as a point of clarification, that
moron you just heard telling you to go to a
Smoke Justice. What he meant to say was this Thursday,
by all means to go to Smoke Justice next Thursday,
if you please. It's a great place. You'll have a
great time. But the show is going to be on.

(00:25):
The show is going to be on Thursday of this week,
not next Thursday. So I don't want you showing up
next Thursday wondering where I am and where Tony is
and where Boston days. Thank you, what's up? Good afternoon,
moggor that's me. This is ESPN fifteen thirty. I do
appreciate you listening. Hope you had a have had so
far at least an amazing Tuesday afternoon. Full show preview

(00:50):
is available on Twitter at moegar. Thanks to Emery Federal
Credit Union, your credit union with heart since nineteen thirty nine.
Go to EMORYFCU dot org and if you do that,
you and I I would be members of the same
credit union. So do that. Do that now? Do that now,
or go to one of their branches. If you're on
the West side of Cincinnati, go to the one on
Bridgetown Road, my branch. You won't be sorry, EMORYFCU dot org.

(01:15):
We got some red stuff to get to today. We
are really going to be heavy on the reds tomorrow.
We are inching closer to opening day. First pitch Reds
and Giants on Thursday is assuming the first pitch is
thrown on time, pretty much forty nine hours away. And
I'll do what I do a couple of days before
opening day every year. In just a second, I was

(01:38):
having a good time with Austin and Tony on Sincy
three to sixty about my poll question, which is I'm
making fun of the suggestion that Sean Miller was given
this chance to Xavier, that had he not been given
it would be coaching at some outpost. So go vote
now at Mulgar. I pull questions on the show are

(01:58):
a service of United Heartland and Shuran. And and I've asked,
had Xavier and not hired Sean Miller three years ago,
where would he have gotten his next head coaching gig?
And the choices are small town middle school with a
rubber floor for a gym, renegade semi pro league with
rosters filled with ex cons, high school in a remote
rural town where you'd also have to teach driver's at

(02:19):
and shop class, and somewhere in Europe populated with a
team populated by guys who are escaping their alimony payments.
There's a lot about a coaching change that I laugh at.
And maybe it's just me. And I'm not telling anybody
not to have you know, not to feel disappointment or
worry about the program or what's next. All those things

(02:39):
are important, But I just I love this And I'd
read some letters to the editor and the Inquiry today
where you know, people are really hurt and mad and
Sean Miller, he betrayed him because well, Xavier gave him
a chance. They took a chance on him, And I'm sorry,
Like there were other schools South Carolina head interest in

(03:00):
Sean Miller three years ago. I don't know if that
would have worked. A Xavier, I think is a better
gig than South Carolina is. But I just you you
missed me with this notion that well, they they gave
him a chance. He gave him a chance because nobody
else would, and so he owed them, he owed them
his entire career, how he owed them his life? Please,

(03:22):
Like I don't think that's based in reality at all.
Somebody would have given Sean Miller an excellent coach who
what he did at Arizona is pretty much permissible now,
somebody would have given him an opportunity, So like, yeah, man,
I understand, like when you don't have a coach and
the portal's open, you're in a very tenuous place. Well

(03:43):
as Rick brooring, like can they hire Chris mack now?
And if they don't, why not? And if it's not mac,
then who's gonna be? Like Rick's going to join us
and answer those questions? But man, I am I'm sorry,
And we talked about this extensively yesterday and I've been
told I was I was cold hearted. I'm not cold hearted.

(04:04):
I just I don't understand why, after watching coach after
coach after coach after coach after coach in college sports
do this. People are either surprised or so emotionally beaten
up when a coach chooses to leave, especially one that
has already left you before. But more than anything, what
I find just hilarious is this suggestion that had it

(04:27):
not been for Xavier University, that Sean Miller would be
desperate to go find a coaching gig, any coaching gig,
anybody who would hire him, he would have had to
take that gig. Come on, man, nobody actually believes that, right.
I would like to think the answer is no. Five
point three seven four nine fifteen thirty is our phone number.

(04:49):
Rick is going to join us in just about ten minutes.
He did a takedown of Sean Miller Musketeer Report dot
com that if you're a Xavier fan, maybe an aggrieved one,
maybe a hurt one, I think you will really really
like we'll talk about that and what's next for x
you With Rick coming up in just about ten minutes.
We have with us at four h five, a really
terrific writer, and he's written a really good Reds book,

(05:13):
and I want to talk about the premise of the book,
which is the nineteen eighty one team that had the
best record in baseball but still didn't play in the postseason,
and some thoughts on the team that takes the field
tonight in Dateon and then more importantly the one that
takes the field on Thursday at Great American Ballpark. Grant Freaking,
who I'm almost certain has appeared on this show before,
is going to join us at four five, I will

(05:36):
plant my flag, and I hope to be wrong about this,
but this is a bit of an exercise we do
every year, and in large part we do it because
I have a hard time believing that the extreme is
going to be reality in most years when it comes

(05:57):
to the Reds. Right, so the extreme for the Reds
I think would be that this team wins ninety games.
I still feel like it's slightly extreme, slightly to say
that they're going to win the division, and I think
it's extreme to suggest they're going to lose ninety games.
I think both are possibilities, but like those don't strike
me as the most likely outcomes, and so I always

(06:18):
sort of settle in where in the range where the
most likely outcomes are. And to predict a win total
for a baseball team is far more inexact than to
do the same exercise for a football team. The Vegas
over under is seventy nine and a half. I think
the Reds will go over seventy nine and a half. Now,
I'm the first to tell you I love talking over unders.

(06:41):
I think sometimes though we talk about them too much
and frame them in a way that if you hit
the over it's a success. Well, the Reds could win
eighty games, could hit the over cash a winning ticket.
I don't think anybody would feel like that is a success.
I think this team wins. I'll make it a better range.
How about that eighty two to eighty four wins? Like
that that feels most likely. That's where if you said

(07:05):
you got a wager amount of money that matters to you.
On a three win range where they're going to finish,
I'd say eighty two to eighty four. Now that's better
than last year, that's higher than the Vegas over under,
and there is a lot to like. Like I've said
all off season, I think most would agree. You probably

(07:27):
would that the starting pitching has a chance to be
a major, major asset. The roster itself. There's a lot
of high ceiling players. Elie Dela Cruz is a high
ceiling player. Matt McClain is a high ceiling player. I
think Christian and Carnassi on Strand is a high ceiling player.
I think I think Tyler Stevenson is a high ceiling player.

(07:49):
I don't know when he's gonna play. I'm just not
convinced that they're going to be able to overcome their
offensive limitations enough to break through and win this division,
or to break through and make the playoffs. Maybe winning
eighty three or eighty four games gets them there. Maybe

(08:11):
the division is so mediocre that they can win this thing,
win the division with eighty three, eighty four, eighty five wins.
Maybe it could be like two years ago where an
eighty four team win, a eighty four win team made
the wildcard round. But I got him in this range
because while I think there's a lot of high ceiling players,
and while I believe the starting pitching as a chance

(08:34):
to be really good, it just feels like it just
feels like there are offensive limitations. I have no idea
what to expect from the corner positions on this team.
Tyler Stevenson is injured. I worry about that becoming a
recurrence the oblique Spencer Steer is going to DH the night,
which is good, but he's going to start the season

(08:54):
on the injured list. That's not great. How often are
we going to talk about this, this shoulder that he
has been dealing with. There's also just not that much
of a collective track record. It is still largely an
inexperienced team. Matt McClain and Christian and Karnasi on Strand
are gonna come back, and those are high ceiling players,

(09:15):
but they are two players who have yet to combined
play one hundred and sixty two games. Like, if you
take the games played between Matt McClain and Christian and
Karnasi on Strand at the big league level, you will
fall short of one sixty two. And so you know,
for me to assume that they're gonna exceed eighty two,
eighty three, eighty four wins, then you gotta convince me

(09:37):
that a team that doesn't have a huge collective track record,
with a whole bunch of guys who don't have that
much of an individual track record, is going to be
able to exceed dramatically quantitative or qualitative mathematical projections. For
this club, it feels like the roster as the season

(09:58):
begins is still incomplete. Like it it's I know I
talked about this yesterday, but it feels like if you
look at what the twenty sixth man roster is likely
to look like on Thursday, that they could still use
a guy specifically I believe in the outfield, but they
could still use a guy. There might be a lot

(10:20):
of teams you could say that about, but I don't
care about those. I care about this one. And there's
also like, and I've I've hit on this before as well.
You could look at the incomplete roster and you could
you could start to project ahead and go, well, what
about what they can get at the deadline. That's all
well and good. They're gonna play over one hundred games

(10:43):
before the deadline gets here. If you're acknowledging they're gonna
have to go and get somebody at the deadline in March,
then they should have addressed that in December or January
instead of in July. And by the way, this franchise
doesn't have a great recent track record of actually going
for it at the deadline. Do I believe that there

(11:06):
is a world where the Reds this year's team wins
ninety games. Yeah. Yeah. Health is going to have a
lot to do with that, and a handful of these
players exceeding their mathematical projections would have to happen. And
I certainly do think there's a world where they really
underwhelm and lose a lot of games and kind of
make us wonder if this is ever going to work.

(11:28):
But those two outcomes don't seem to me to be
the most likely. The most likely is they're better than
last year. They have a better manager, going to be
better in one run games, hopefully better health, hopefully better
health with the starting staff. There's a lot of upside there,
and there's a lot of upside with some of the
positional players. But it still feels like, offensively at least,

(11:49):
a really limited team, which brings the ceiling down even further.
And me, and it's just me, I've I've got him.
I'll make it about a specific number if you want,
eighty three and seventy nine, So we do this exercise
every year. I'm looking for the folks who think they're

(12:11):
gonna be so much better than that, who think I'm
a moron for limiting this team to eighty three wins,
or the folks on the other side who think this
team is actually gonna be much much worse and I'm
an idiot for thinking this team can get to eighty
three wins. I'm looking for those who are buying into
the I hate to say extreme, but the least likely

(12:32):
of the outcomes, at least when it comes to how
most people have projected the Reds to be in twenty
twenty five. Five point three seven four nine fifteen thirty
is our phone number eighty six six seven oh two
three seven seven six works as well. Sean Miller was
introduced in Austin today. You'll hear you'll hear the part
of that where he talked about Xavier. I'm guessing if

(12:53):
you're an ex You fan, you're not that interested in
hearing what he had to say about Texas. But we'll
have part of what he had to say about Xavier
coming up here in just a bit. And we are
getting set for the baseball season. It starts. It's already underway,
actually two games have been played, but it starts here
in Cincinnati on Thursday. I think baseball is in a
really good place. I think most of us who love

(13:14):
the sport believe baseball is in a really good place.
Not a perfect place, but a really good place. Is
it willing to undo all the goodwill it's been building
up for the last couple of years. It feels like
the answer is yes. We'll spend some time on that
as well. But first, our guy Rick Boring Musketeer Report
dot com. By the way, one quick note if you're going,
wait a minute, it's Tuesday. Whe's Danner. Paul Dayner Junior

(13:35):
normally does join us in studio on Tuesdays. He is
on vacation. Kind of a dead time for him post
free agency, getting ready for the draft. So Paul off
today is his last day of vacation. He is going
to join us for a segment tomorrow and we are
looking forward to that, all right. It's seventeen after three,
Rick Boring Musket here Report dot com. Next on ESPN fifteen.

much for joining us. Rick Brewing covers Xavier basketball for

Go read it now. He's also got his hotboard total

the players hitting the portal, the players who may hit
the portal, the players who aren't going to hit all

very busy, so I'm thankful for his time.

Speaker 4 (15:10):
Rick.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
What's going on?

Speaker 5 (15:12):
Hey, it's all fifty percent off too, Mo. Sign up
Musketeerreport dot com.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
We've got to see what going on all right. There
you go, Musketeer Report dot com. I read your piece
on Sean Miller, and I never thought that reading a
piece about Sean Miller would make me think of Butch
Jones that you see, but here we are, so congratulations.

Speaker 5 (15:32):
That's the exact person that came to my mind today, MO,
when I saw Sean Miller get up there and tell
Texas fans that his culture is all about quote all in,
which is the motto that he just used for the
entire last season and even made a documentary around here
at Xavier. All I could think of was Butch Jones

(15:53):
going from Cincinnati with Rep THECA, moving to Tennessee and
using Rep the tee. That was the first thing that
came to my mind, and quite honestly one of the
things that prompted me to write that.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
It is interesting and I think at face value, a
lot of us go okay, he was here for three years,
made a Sweet sixteen, made the Tournament this year, won
a game. For what it's worth, sandwiched around a season
that was very, very underwhelming. I guess at phase value,
I look at that and go, okay, that's not a
bad run. When I step away from it, and when

(16:25):
I read europe Piece, suddenly I feel like, God, you
know what the entire Sean Miller experienced these last three years.
Kind of underwhelming.

Speaker 6 (16:34):
That's the right word to use. It's not that it
was bad. It's not that.

Speaker 5 (16:37):
Sean Miller wasn't a slight improvement from the four years
of Travis Steel. It was a slight improvement, But Xavier
didn't bring back Sean Miller. To everyone at the time,
I think felt was one of was probably their best
coach in school history at that point, to do slightly
better than what they had done the.

Speaker 6 (16:54):
Last four years.

Speaker 5 (16:55):
They brought Sean Miller back with the idea that he
was going to build something in Savior, that he was
going to get them to a higher level, take them
to the next level, is the way he phrased it,
which everyone understands at Xavier is a Final four And
I'm not saying that should be the standard that coaches
are held to a Savior, It's never happened there before.
But to come in have the first losing season since

(17:18):
nineteen ninety five ninety six, the first year that the
Xavier went to the A ten, I believe, and follow
that up with the year in which had you not
gotten an absolute miracle run down the stretch winning seven
straight games, you wouldn't have made the tournament again in
back to back years.

Speaker 4 (17:33):
Ah.

Speaker 5 (17:34):
I don't think that's what Xavier fans had in mind
for him coming back. And again, this wasn't just a
random coach that Xavier was hiring. This was Sean Miller
coming back to Xavier after he had gone through all
the stuff he went through with the FBI investigation, getting
fired from Arizona, being without a job for multiple years
and wanting to get back into the sport. Xavier stuck

(17:55):
their neck out for him because of what he could
bring to them, because of the up side that he
could bring, and the thought that he was going to
do something special there. Looking at it through that prism,
I don't think there's any way to see it as
he achieved anything.

Speaker 6 (18:09):
Close to that.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
How much of that is do the factors beyond his
direct control?

Speaker 5 (18:17):
I think he would tell you everything, and I think
people behind the scenes that Xavier would tell you they
had NIL money that was very competitive in the big eats,
and quite honestly, looking forward, the way things are going
to go with revenue sharing in the Big ten and
SEC going to the school that had a giant football
program that is Priority one, two and three, and oh,

(18:38):
by the way, you're also behind baseball at that school.

Speaker 6 (18:40):
You're third behind.

Speaker 5 (18:41):
Football and baseball at Texas. I don't know that you're
in that much better of a situation from an NIL
and being able to get player standpoint. Certainly, Texas has
a much bigger brand, certainly has Texas has more overall resources.
But Texas, with all of those resources and with a
top pick in the draft this season and another first

(19:03):
projected first rounder this season finished fourteenth out of sixteen
teams in the SEC. It ain't gonna be easy there either,
and I don't I mean with the excuses we see
keep cropping up every year, Like one year they played
too tough of a schedule, it was unfair because they
had to play Houston and Purdue. Then the next year
it was one guy got injured who averaged ten points
at a mid major school, and that was going to

(19:24):
be a difference between Xavier making a Final four run
or not. I just don't know that that's how this works.
I think Xavier is actually in a pretty good spot
and actually does have pretty good resources in the Big
East for a coach that views it as that type
of job. But Sean clearly didn't. Sean Dodd as a
lower level job and a place he needed to get
out of quickly because he felt he needed every advantage

(19:47):
that he could get to get to a Final four.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
Rick Burring Musketeer Report dot Com. We'll talk about who's
next in the head coaches office, what do you expect
to happen, and maybe to a degree, what has happened
and with regard to the players who were on the
team as of Friday night in the transfer.

Speaker 6 (20:05):
Portal, there's like one or two of them left.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
I think.

Speaker 5 (20:10):
Ryan Godwell still at Xager, Roddy Anderson still at Xager.

Speaker 6 (20:16):
That might be about it.

Speaker 5 (20:17):
There might be someone else. I'm forgetting there, but it
doesn't really matter. I mean, everyone who wants to leave
will leave. You're basically going to be starting over completely.
But that's kind of how it goes in this sport
in general. I mean, even if you don't lose your coach,
you kind of have to turn over most of your
roster from year to year now and without when a
coach leaves, it's almost always a complete rebuild. The Sean
Miller situation with Travis Steele's team was very, very unique

(20:39):
that first year that he took over, where he was
able to kind of keep nearly the whole team in
place and make a run to the Sweet sixteen with
Steel's players. I think that was a situation that you're
not going to see very often. So if I was
a Xavier fan, I would definitely be expecting more of
a rebuild this time around.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
Why haven't they hired Chris Mack.

Speaker 5 (20:55):
Yet well, I think they want to go through a process.
I mean, look, this thing just happened yesterday, and there
are other I think everyone heard that Chris Mack was
very interested in this job before it was even open,
and so initially all the momentum in terms of public
information and buzz went Chris Mack's direction. And that's not
to say that he isn't the favorite, because I think

(21:17):
he is. I think it's probable but he'll be Xavier's
next head coach. But I don't think it's done yet.
I think there are still other candidates, and I just
think they don't have the means to back channel like
Chris did before the job opened, to get his name
out there through local media and other things. So partly
that's why you're hearing so much momentum behind Chris's name. Initially,

(21:39):
I think you know, each time that Craig Christopher has hired.

Speaker 6 (21:43):
A new head coach since I've been doing this, it's.

Speaker 5 (21:45):
Been about a three to four day process, So I
would imagine that's probably a reasonable timeline. Once again, I
know I've seen the flight tracker information that there's a
flight coming in from Charleston to Lunkin this evening. Maybe
that's Chris mac and maybe it really will be done
that soon because of the transfer portal era, and you
need to get these things done.

Speaker 6 (22:04):
So quickly now. But based on what I've.

Speaker 5 (22:07):
Been hearing this afternoon, I don't believe that to be
the case. I think there's still gonna be a little
bit bit of a process that needs to play out.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
Will there have to be broken relationships or hurt feelings
that need to get fixed. If Chris is the guy,
I think those have.

Speaker 5 (22:24):
Probably already been taken care of. I mean, it's been
a while he's been back at Xavier, you know, I
assume that you know, there's rumors out there about Chris
and Greg Christopher, the athletic director, and how well they
got along at the end of the tenure before he
left to Louisville. But with most of these things, I mean,
you're talking about two professional guys. I mean, you know, Chris,
he's a down to earth, normal good guy, and Greg

(22:44):
Christopher is a very smart, measured, level headed human being.
Like I think two grown ups like that can pretty
easily get over whatever differences they might have had in
the heat of a moment when when Greg was or
when Sean. Chris was taking a bigger job at Louisville,
so I imagine there are no issues on that front.

Speaker 1 (23:03):
If if Chris Mack decided, would none of us expect
him to do to go you know what, I'm good,
I'm gonna go hang out in Charleston for another year.
Who then, would be the best candidate?

Speaker 5 (23:18):
That's a good question.

Speaker 1 (23:21):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (23:23):
I don't know, to be honest with you, like, what
do you.

Speaker 6 (23:26):
Want me to say our best candidate? I don't know.

Speaker 5 (23:29):
There are going to be other candidates that they look at.
If you're asking me for like my favorite candidate probably
wouldn't be on their board. If you're talking about other
names that I've heard, which I think is a more
interesting conversation, like Rick Patino Junior is a name that
I've heard. I think they wanted to get involved with
pat Kelsey. I think his buy out prohibits that. I
think Luke Murray, the assistant at Yukon, who was an

(23:51):
assistant for Chris mac at Xavier, is an interesting name.
But yeah, I think those are some of the other
names I've heard. There's probably one or two other that
are involved in the problem, says but I do think
Chris is the favorite right now?

Speaker 1 (24:02):
Yeah? And uh and should be all right, man, I
know you have a lot going on. I appreciate you
doing this as always, and we'll probably bother you again soon.

Also ian jabbo is going to start the season In the.
Reds bullpen the fact that he is going to start
the season with the big league club is perhaps news
to Some Ian Ian jabbou in twenty, twenty three during
a year where the bullpen had to had to take

(27:40):
on a, HEFTY workload I Thought ian jabbo. Did okay
now there are some folks on the internet who have
decided they don't Like ian jabbo and so they would
make him out to be like the worst pitcher of.
All time limited last year to just. Two games he
is going to start the season With. The reds his contract.

(30:51):
The reds and one of the cool things About the
reds is THEY have i, would argue two of the
brighter young stars in, This Sport hunter green And and
elie De, la cruz and both are are going to
be asked to take major steps forward, This year hunter
with his Durability and ellie just statistically, and otherwise we're,

(31:13):
expecting more but based on the progress we've, seen already
those are fair and. Reasonable expectations but but They the
reds do have a couple of those guys that look
like right now faces of. The sport and it's as
as much as you you hear NonStop about how well you,
know baseball. It's it it's not in the it's. It's

(31:36):
not it doesn't occupy the same Place in american culture
than it did thirty, years ago and, that's undeniable and
it's had a hard time connecting with, young FANS and
i think there's some validity. To that and it's it's
not a national. Sport anymore, it's REGIONAL and i kind
of feel like that's largely always been. The case baseball

(31:58):
has done a lot of really good things in, recent
years like. The pitchclock even though two years ago people
who didn't like it they were. PREDICTING doom i think
it's won almost. Everybody over EVEN folks i know who
were opposed to the pitch clock think it's great and
don't ever want to go back to the old way of.
DOING things i Could Crush rob manford for a lot.

(32:20):
Of things him forcing that down everybody's throat was one
of the best moves a commissioner in any sport has.
Ever made the game is so much, more intelligentic so
much easier, to consume and even some of the. Other
THINGS like, I was i was kind of opposed to
banning the SHIFT because i thought that would lead to.

(32:42):
More strikeouts. IT hasn't i got. THAT wrong i don't
miss watching shortstops play in shallow, Right field so they got.
That right like it feels like on. The field even
what they experimented with in, spring training which they're not
going to use at the major league level during the
regular season, this year the challenge system for balls and
strikes it it looks it looks like it's going. To

(33:06):
work some tweaks have to be added in, terms of,
you know really tall hitters are really, short hitters but
it looks like it's going. To work and then you
add to it the fact that there's there's a lot
of really good young players in this sport, right now
like a lot of really good young players in this sport,
right now and even some good players who aren't, So
young like we're dealing with an all time great in

(33:27):
this sport in Show Hey o tani and the list
of guys who are either entering their prime or are in,
Their Prime bobby, Witt Junior, ronald acunya who thankfully is
going to come back and play For the braves, this,
Year Obviously Elie, Dela Cruz fernando, Tatist Junior, Adley Rushman,
Corbyn Carroll juan soto is still just twenty six, Years Old,

(33:51):
Jackson Curio vladimir, guerero Junior Like, gunner Henderson there's jordanovarezz
feel like he's been. Around forever he's twenty six. Years
old so the, sport is, you know nobody ever loves
to hear someone, SAY this a sport is in a really.
GOOD place i make that case for. COLLEGE basketball i

(34:12):
think college basketball is in a really. GOOD place I
Think Major league baseball is in a really. Good place
the question is do they undo years worth of goodwill
at the end of. Next season i'll play this audio
for you here a little bit later on because we're
up against the top of the, hour HERE but i

(34:32):
was watching a Clip From jeff PASSIN at espn dot
com talking about baseball's labor situation where there is an
expectation it feels almost inevitable that there's going to be
a lockout at the end of next year because the
owners will continue their decades long pursuit of a. Salary
cap and we could debate the merits of a. SALARY

(34:53):
cap i GUESS what i want to Know is, number
one if they lock the, players out are they actually
going to be willing to lock them out of what,
counts most which? Are games? Number two how much will
you undo all the goodwill you've built up by implementing
things like the pitch clock and getting rid of all
those stupid pickoff throws and putting a product on the

(35:15):
field that people seem to. Really enjoy how much are
you gonna undo all that good will for the sake
of fighting for something that you have an unblemish track
record of not being able to. GET like i. Hate
that that that's gonna dominate the talk of this season
and next the, Looming lockout and there's a part of me,

(35:37):
that wonders will baseball cut off its nose despite? Its
face Grant freaking? Who's awesome joins. Us next hey do
you run a? Small business but you're kind OF under espn.

Speaker 2 (35:47):
Fifteen thirty, all right?

Speaker 1 (35:49):
What's up, Good afternoon I'm. O inger THIS is espn.
Fifteen thirty thank you for joining. Us today we've got
folks we got to get to on hold here in just,
a second Go Here sean miller and his Statements at
Texas about xavier coming up in just about. Thirty minutes
opening day is two. Days away first pitch is going

(36:10):
to be thrown in just about forty. Eight hours Reds,
and giants. Don't forget we are Broadcasting on Thursday From
smoke Justice in covington from a noon. To Three, Tony
pike austin, and myself we hope to see. YOU there
i love, baseball books and if You're a, reds fan
you don't have to look very far to find some
really good books About, the reds some going back, many, many,

(36:33):
many many many. Many years some going back maybe not so.
Many years this one piqued. My interest it is Written
by Randy And Grant freaking It's Called The Big Red Machines,
last hurrah and it's a fictional story based on. Something
factual and the factual something is the nineteen Eighty One,

(36:54):
red season which chances are you know they had the
best record. In baseball they played it in ninety nine
win clip, that year but because of the mid season,
baseball strike they didn't get a chance to play in.
The postseason and it's one of the great travesties in all.
Of baseball it's one of the, GREAT travesties i think
in all. Of sports Randy and grant took, that story

(37:18):
took what happened in nineteen, eighty one and created a
factual base story of the nineteen Eighty One red season
and what would have been what many would argue what
not only what could, have been but what would have
happened had they been able to finish out the season
and play in the postseason as the team with the

(37:38):
best record in baseball. That YEAR so i, READ this
i Went to arizona just about a month ago and
read it mostly on the, way there finished it up
on the. Way back it is a. Great read It's
Called The Big. Red Machines. Last hurrah grant freaking is
with us here. In studio it is despite the FACT
that i was unable to find a drink of water.
For you it's good to. Have, you, well thanks we

(38:00):
get as.

Speaker 7 (38:00):
You said forty eight hours until opening day starts another
season of probable pain ahead. Of us SO let's, i
figured let's go back only forty years or so look
at some more Pain for reds fans in nineteen.

Speaker 1 (38:10):
Eighty one it's one of even if you take away
the strike and, what happened it's one of the Most
interesting red seasons of all, time BECAUSE and i think
maybe younger fans or more casual fans wouldn't realize there
are lots of holdovers from the. Mid Seventies johnny bench
was on, That Team ken griffy's on, That Team george
foster's on, That Team david concepcion's on. That team so,

(38:31):
you have like most a lot of, those guys. Right
yep and then you have some dudes that became household
names kind of as fans like, myself became, you know
fans of. The Team ron osters on, that, Team Right
mario soto's on, that team and it's this interesting blend
and a team that went sixty six and, forty two
which if you extrapolate that over a, full season that's ninety.

Speaker 7 (38:52):
Nine wins this team. Was, awesome yeah they were a darn.
Good team as, you mentioned four remaining members Of The
Big red machine. Hanging on at this point you Mentioned,
Rod Oster dave collins is on. This Team, rat Night
future Reds Manager, Tom Steven mario soda are a really
good one two punch top this rotation BULLPEN solid i Think,
the reds The current reds are. PROBABLY killed i had
the bullpen back in the nineteen eighty, one SEASON but

(39:15):
i was. NOT aware i was born in nineteen. EIGHTY
eight i was not aware of the plight of the
nineteen Eighty one reds until my uncle and Co Author
randy freaking called me up in the early DAYS of
covid and explained to me his next book idea and
also explained to me just how screwed over the red
the nineteen Eighty one reds were by this cockamami split
season scheme dreamed up BY former Mlb Commissioner.

Speaker 1 (39:36):
Bully, koon yeah. IT'S funny i could be awfully critical of.
Baseball commissioners many of us Were With, bud sealig many
of many of us have Been With. Rob manfred i'm. Not,
Sure Look bud sealig oversaw the cancelation of the Ninety Four,
world series tried to Contract The, minnesota twins oversaw the
departure of Baseball. From Montreal rob manfred has done a

(39:56):
lot of THINGS that i spent a lot of time making.
Fun of neither guilt see Of What booie coon forced
upon us with the owner's approval after the strike in nineteen.
Eighty one.

Speaker 5 (40:05):
It's.

Speaker 7 (40:05):
Unbelievable, one fortunately for the sake of, my book My
uncle randy actually did something about it in nineteen, eighty
one and him two of his law school Buddies From
Ohio State law school actually Did Sue Major. League baseball
that actually did happen in, real life and that forms
the basis of the fictional part of. The, book now
that lawsuit was quickly withdrawn because they were encouraged by

(40:27):
the law Professors At ohio states and some other their
future employers and some other high ranking folks to withdraw.
That LAWSUIT but i Think the scars have never never
left that for.

Speaker 1 (40:36):
My, UNCLE no i don't think they've left for fans of.
That era and what's always been interesting to me Is
the cardinals were. Similarly, Screwed right they had the best
record In The National, league east but they Won The
world series the next year and went on to become
one of the defining teams of the, nineteen eighties went
back To The world series in, eighty five went back
To The world series in nineteen. Eighty Seven the reds
nine nineteen eighty two lost one, Hundred games so it

(40:58):
wasn't the last hurraw For the cardinal was kind of
a jumping. Off point not so much Here.

Speaker 7 (41:02):
In, cincinnati Yeah the reds were far from the only
victims in this tragedy of the nineteen eighty. One season
the cumulative standings are just a mess if you look.
At Them the reds played one hundred and, eight Games
the dodgers played one hundred. And ten remind You the
dodgers got into the postseason. That, year yeah ended, the,
Series right cardinals played one hundred and, Three games cubs
played one hundred and six were all over the place

(41:22):
because now there were rainnouts of force impacted and so
it was. Just chaotic but the season was so great
up until the, stop it which was the real shame.
Of it You Had pete Rose Chasing stan muzil the nl.
Hits record he tied the Mark Against nolan ryan the
DAY before i believe the. Strike, Happened, yeah fernandomania You
Have steve carlton becoming the first left handed to which three.

(41:43):
Thousand strikeouts he had such a great season that was
interrupted by. This, insanity yeah, you.

Speaker 1 (41:49):
Know in ninety four we had a strike and it
took years for people to, come, back right it. Took
Years the reds made the playoffs in, ninety five and
they didn't sell out Their Two national. League championships here.
These games What was we'll talk about the on, field
impact but was there a residual sort of impact being
felt By the reds at the gate and in terms

(42:10):
of public interest because of the strike or did things
just fall apart because the team. GOT dismantled i think
more of.

Speaker 7 (42:17):
The Ladder the reds actually struggled a little bit of,
tendance wise and they had a series where they could
have actually taken a hold of first place near right
end of the eighty. One season they didn't get, it
done and they were at home and the stands weren't.
Completely FULL now, i don't off hand don't remember what
time those games were at it we were talking about
businessman special, type. Games WHATEVER but i think it's more of,
the LADDER and i Think the reds moved on pretty

(42:39):
quickly in the fact based world Here Where, dick wagner
Then the reds, general manager was, certainly UPSET but i
think moved past it and didn't show the outrage maybe
some wanted to see.

Speaker 1 (42:49):
FROM him.

Speaker 7 (42:51):
I think they thought they would certainly be quite a
bit better in nineteen eighty two than they ended, up
being and then it just went rolling downhill until the
team started rebound a little bit in the mid eighties
and became string of second, place finishes and then we
know what happened in.

Speaker 1 (43:04):
Nineteen, ninety yeah we know what happened as the latter
part of the. EIGHTIES unfolded i don't think there are
fans who understand the Graveyard that cincinnati became post nineteen
eighty one for.

Speaker 7 (43:13):
A, While, Right yeah and it's a shame because it
was a, slow, dismantling right and you Had this that's
what makes the nineteen eighty one so.

Speaker 1 (43:22):
Promise and fulfilled feeling like.

Speaker 7 (43:24):
You had You Know, johnny bench who actually oddly enough
Informed the reds before the nineteen one seasons he didn't
want to play.

Speaker 1 (43:31):
Catcher anymore and guess. What happened we started Playing.

Speaker 7 (43:34):
In april he was, playing catcher But Then dan dreesen
got hurt and he played first base All. Throughout may
then he got hurt and he came back and, played
catcher and you still See Had dan dreesen hero of
The big red machine from the.

Speaker 1 (43:45):
Mid seventies.

Speaker 7 (43:47):
It's just a whole bunch of GUYS who i think
gad a lot of good vibes the fans during the
nineteen eighty once even just even despite despite, the strike and.

Speaker 1 (43:56):
It all was for, not infintially and a manager who
history is often not that kind To in. John McNamara
they go to the playoffs in, seventy nine which is
the first year after they Obviously Remove sparky anderson from.
His Job pete rose Goes. To philadelphia they get swept By,
the PIRATES and i think in part because he never
got a chance to manage A winning red's, postseason game

(44:18):
deprived of the opportunity in nineteen. Eighty one he's. A
footnote he's a Footnote in, Red's history and, you wonder
and THAT'S what i was thinking About as i'd read
sort of the fictional part of, your book was how
does history treat this man who went on to. Have
success he Managed The red sox In The, World series
but how is? He treated how do we look at
him if he gets an opportunity to manage again in
the postseason with a team in eighty one that was

(44:40):
on paper better than the one in, Seventy, nine.

Speaker 7 (44:42):
Well he probably isn't ranking at the tip the top
of Us With, sparky anderson or doesn't have this sort
of a cerbic charm of a. Loop panella but he's
certainly third or fourth on, that list right he at
least gets To The, world series maybe wins it with.
This team, you know there were some other really good
teams in nineteen. Eighty one certainly no got teams that
were really like a, CUT above i, Would say and

(45:03):
So the reds certainly had every opportunity to make it
to nineteen Eighty One world series in reality and win the.

Speaker 1 (45:08):
Whole, thing yeah it's funny because if you look at
this franchise's HISTORY and, I remember i remember the ninety, four,
strike right there was a. Similar vibe, you know the
Ninety four they're a game up In The National LEAGUE
central i had just Beaten The, houston astros and then
the postseason gets. Wiped away and so one of the
bigger what ifs is what if the Ninety four reds
get a chance to play in. The postseason and obviously

(45:30):
they went back the. Next year it is interesting the
two major workstoppages in baseball history have been unkind to.
This city we'll look for.

Speaker 7 (45:40):
The sequel in a couple maybe ten years on the
ninety four. WORK stoppage, i mean it's it would have
been thrilling to See the reds go up and face,
you know perhaps You Know. Pedro, martinez yeah In The
montreal expos And the dome, and everything and a number
of other great teams and. Great, players yeah at least
with the ninety. Four team we had ninety five, after, That,
right yeah nineteen eighty one we had.

Speaker 1 (46:00):
One, Hundred, houses yeah one. Hundred losses the Big, Red
Machines Last, hurrah randy and grand freaking grant with us here.
In studio where can folks? Get?

Speaker 7 (46:09):
This so you can find This On amazon corporate Overloads,
at amazon but you can also find it at freaking
out about. Dot com that's freaking with an a not
like my. Last name it's freaking out about dot com
is another place you can, find it.

Speaker 1 (46:23):
ALL right i sent out a link On my twitter
as Well at moegger we're two days away from? Opening
day do you have? A vibe do you have? A
field do you have are you? Overly optimistic are you?
More measured where are you with the twenty twenty five.

Speaker 7 (46:37):
Version Of The, Reds well i'm certainly ready to be,
heard again JUST like i Am.

Speaker 1 (46:40):
Every. MARCH right I think i'm as.

Speaker 7 (46:45):
AN age i perhaps get more cautiously optimistic and less
blindly optimistic with. THE team i think the bullpen. WORRIES
me i think. IT'S thin i think the rotation could.
BE strong i think the position player court relies on
a lot. OF upside i do believe they'll have better
managing and the better, base running. BETTER vibes i think a.
LITTLE bit i think they're in the Wild CARD hunt

(47:07):
i certainly hope that. We are, you KNOW maybe i
come back On in august and talk about those ninety four,
book plans and maybe we're also talking about a pendant
Race In hunter green's case FOR The nlsi Young and
La De la cruz's case to BE, nashally gonvp perhaps
Competing With. Shoheo tani but they'll. BE better i think
it's hard to have worse, injury luck especially at the

(47:29):
beginning of, the season which it's so difficult to recover
from an injury like a Player like matt McClain and
just be shot in the foot and so many other.
Random INJURIES but i think they'll be solidly, five hundred
and when you're solidly five HUNDRED, and mlb it's just
a matter of percentages and injury luck to kind of
push you into the mid to eight.

Speaker 1 (47:46):
Eighty, Range yeah and got to be better in one,
run games got to be better in the margins where
you're not having dudes getting picked off like. Last year
and got to be. Better defensively and that's that's obviously
stuff you can, quantify statistically but it's oftentimes stuff that
the box score does and tell you. About right it's
with your eyes chucking the ball to the right base
balls that you get to that, you know, you know

(48:06):
might not get an error if you don't get, to
it but if you do get, to it you're. RECORDING
out a lot of that stuff has to be better,
this year and THAT'S where i suspect they will see.
Some improvement AND if i could add to that the
really good starting pitching which, we expect and hopefully a
better OFFENSE than, i expect then, you know maybe they
could exceed. My, EXPECTATIONS yeah.

Speaker 7 (48:24):
I am i'm certainly very Curious about tito's effect on
such a young team who kind of was forced to,
grow up and This With david bell him being a first. Time,
management yeah a lot of first time. Major leaguers tito
is the exact opposite. Of that he's, been everywhere done,
it all. Won everything i'm wondering about. His effect, you
know managers can only have so much effect in the actual.
Win Column but i'm interested to just see how that

(48:46):
plays out. For, sure yeah no doubt. About that by,
THE Ways fc cincinnati going to figure.

Speaker 6 (48:50):
Things out.

Speaker 7 (48:51):
Cautiously, OPTIMISTIC again i hate to make excuses, for them
but it's a third straight very chaotic preseason. With them
this one perhaps took, the Cake with lucco right winding
out trying to bring in A Vander, matt miauskas, continued
absence chipping out center backs to make the, money work
to make all this other, stuff work and then a

(49:12):
thousand games in the first three weeks of, the, season
right so you not exactly like the great greatest ramp.

Speaker 1 (49:17):
Up condition that's what always cracks me WITH the.

Speaker 7 (49:18):
Mls schedule we make make such a big deal about
these guys getting in the, great shape and then they
make them play eight games and twenty five days to start,
the season.

Speaker 1 (49:26):
And it doesn't make. ANY sense i cannot tell you
HOW much i. Enjoyed this it's a. Neat story if
you're A longtime reds fan and you remember nineteen, eighty
one it's gonna bring back bad memories and some. Fine
ones and if you want a good understanding of a
seminal moment in this franchise, is history both because of
what happened in nineteen, eighty one but then what would

(49:48):
happen subsequent to nineteen. EIGHTY one i think you're really
going to. Enjoy This The big. Red Machines, Last hurrah
Randy and grant, freaking again give me. The website it's
freaking out about. Dot com freaking with. An a, all
right freaking out About. Dot com, awesome man good to.
HAVE you i appreciate we do. It again when you
write that ninety, Four book i'll. Be here that's like
my that's in my. Wheelhouse now ninety four, NINETY five

(50:10):
a ninety five team is still my second all.

Speaker 7 (50:12):
Time paper perhaps or ANY and i can negotiate room
for another co, Author, perhaps, yeah yeah that's what, you want?

Speaker 1 (50:17):
Is me? All right thank you, so. Much sir eighteen after.

A boy so this is unrelated to the TOPIC topic i.
Called about but you know there's no, better feeling. No,
BETTER uh i guess feelings the. Best words then playing
with one of the, SITES money?

Speaker 1 (51:19):
I agree? I agree is that what? You're?

Speaker 8 (51:22):
Doing, WELL yeah i hit a nice parlay at twenty
five dollars parlay that paid three GAME.

Speaker 1 (51:29):
Three, K really now you got to tell me who
was in. The, parlay well it was.

Speaker 6 (51:40):
It was.

Speaker 4 (51:41):
A half they had to be ahead of. The half.

Speaker 1 (51:46):
It was an. Eight, teamer yeah you went? Eighteen, parlay yeah, eighteenth,
right Okay.

Speaker 4 (51:55):
And i'm trying to remember because it was midweek lass
WEEK when i.

Speaker 1 (52:00):
Hit IT so i so this this had to be across, multiple, Sports,
right no just too.

Speaker 8 (52:09):
It was it was actually two games and.

Speaker 4 (52:14):
And it was uh uh two. Basketball, Games, actually okay
you like some rolling through trying to, find IT so
i can tell you exactly what.

Speaker 1 (52:26):
It was so you were doing the same, game parlays
like some player props in there that sort.

Speaker 8 (52:30):
Of, thing okay no player props because it was college
and you can't do That. In Ohio, uh, So anyways
i'll tell you THE reason i called one of.

Speaker 1 (52:45):
THE things i hope THE reason i hope the reason
you called was as riveting as what we just. Talked,
about well it kind.

Speaker 4 (52:53):
Of is we both Liked The, dayton flyers and one
of the THINGS that i think the PORTAL.

Speaker 6 (53:05):
The nil has done is made.

Speaker 4 (53:10):
It less likely that they're ever going to be, relevant
again because, you know they you got Guys Like, kobe
BREA who i don't know if you heard the numbers
that were tied, to him but you know two point
one MILLION that i don't Think the flyers are ever

(53:30):
going to come up with a number, like that or whatever,
they paid it will be topping whatever.

Speaker 6 (53:37):
They Paid.

Speaker 4 (53:38):
DURAN holmes i just don't see people of their skill
level ever.

Speaker 6 (53:49):
Choosing to Play it. Dayton anymore How.

Speaker 1 (53:52):
Many final Fours had dayton made over the last four
decades prior TO an, i, Well, none no.

Speaker 4 (54:00):
That's a. FAIR point i mean that is a. Fair
point but who knows where they would have gone the
year that.

Speaker 1 (54:06):
They no doubt heartbreaking, twenty twenty no doubt. About It
so dayton's going to go from not being A perennial
final four contender to not being a perennial final. Four
contender what's going?

Speaker 5 (54:19):
To?

Speaker 1 (54:19):
Change seriously?

Speaker 9 (54:20):
What changed, that's fair but you know there is the
reason why twenty twenty was so heartbreaking is we knew
lottery picks don't show up On the dayton campus all.

Speaker 1 (54:34):
That often that was the CASE before nil and the. Transfer,
portal right we were just getting started with the portal in.
TWENTY twenty i think at that point players still had
to sit out. A year i could be dead wrong,
about that but that's five. Years ago it was a.
Lifetime ago what made that so heartbreaking is we knew
all season long that there Wasn't Another obi toppin. Being

(54:58):
recruited there Wasn't another obie top and coming down, The
pipeline whereas at Schools like Kentucky, and. Kansas, etc well
the next lottery pick is showing up on campus as
soon as the current. Season ends that was pre nil.
And portal we knew. That then we know. That now
what you hope is when you land a player, like
that that you take advantage. Of it Unfortunately for dayton

(55:20):
that year in, twenty twenty they were not given an
opportunity to. Take advantage what you hope now is, that somehow,
some way whether it's turning over, a rock whether it's
evaluating a player at a where you feel like this
dude could play at a really high level and other
high majors kind of look down their noses, at him
and he arrives on your campus and you pay him

(55:41):
what you can, pay him and you win. With him whatever.
It is, to me it's not. That dissimilar you're hoping
for lottery tickets at Schools. Like dayton in, twenty twenty
you were hoping for a lottery ticket at a School.
Like dayton in, my, opinion frankly not that much. Has,
changed yeah and you.

Speaker 4 (55:58):
Can develop them and then they become. Lottery picks but
that's part of.

Speaker 6 (56:04):
The problem you develop them and they become.

Speaker 4 (56:06):
A lottery pick and then they're gone the next year
because somebody's gonna pay them a lot.

Speaker 1 (56:10):
Of money good for, the player and. LIKE that, i,
MEAN look I Love Miama. Mater scott, You know i'm
A huge uc, basketball fan AND so i want what's
best for those two. Individual Programs but i'm, Pro player i'm.
Pro labor i'm pro the people who make up the
product getting. Their worth and, you know look that that

(56:31):
unfortunately can't be spread evenly among all. The schools that's
just never been. The reality but, YOU know i hear
how well we have haves and. Have nots how come
people didn't complain about this prior, to Nil When ohio
state could spend three hundred percent more on football recruiting
than a SCHOOL. Like, u see nobody seemed to have
a problem with the haves and have, Nots Then so
i'm gonna have a problem with it now.

Speaker 6 (56:52):
Again that that certainly is a.

Speaker 4 (56:54):
Fair, point yeah, ALL right i.

Speaker 1 (56:57):
Found it, oh good? Thank, GOD yeah, I know i
know you're.

Speaker 4 (57:01):
Waiting it you probably wouldn't have been able to.

Speaker 1 (57:03):
Sleep tonight the entire city is Waiting with Beta. Bred
scott who was On.

Speaker 4 (57:06):
Your Mount saint mary's first half?

Speaker 1 (57:09):
Money, line okay over one.

Speaker 4 (57:11):
Twenty eight one hundred and twenty Eight Points Mount saint
mary's money line and erase to.

Speaker 6 (57:18):
Ten points those.

Speaker 1 (57:18):
Are fun those are not doing?

Speaker 6 (57:20):
Any, races yes those. Are fun AND then I had xavier.

Speaker 4 (57:27):
And this is when They played texas and the. Over
YEP and I Had george mason and ud.

Speaker 5 (57:34):
In THE n.

Speaker 1 (57:35):
I yep, All right so eight, way parlay which was
the last leg that had to hit THE last.

Speaker 10 (57:46):
I was really.

Speaker 1 (57:49):
Sweating as Ager against Texas against Yes. Against texas so
the first seven ways, hit right the first seven, legast
hit and then Late on, WEDNESDAY night i don't do
parlays for the, most Part so i've never. Experienced this
what is it like in the final ten to fifteen
minutes of that game when you're either getting the bag

(58:12):
or you're. Getting nothing you're getting a, bag three you're
getting over.

Speaker 4 (58:17):
The cash out offers is what, you're doing and then
that's what is.

Speaker 1 (58:22):
A killer what was the difference between your cash out
option when you had the seventh leg hit versus what
you ultimately. Got, PAID well i think.

Speaker 4 (58:30):
They were offering you something in the seven hundred. DOLLARS
range i think it got up to. One, thousand yeah
and you know it paid twenty eight and.

Speaker 1 (58:38):
You said, screw it this is an. Eight Way so
i'm riding, out baby all.

Speaker 6 (58:42):
Or.

Speaker 8 (58:42):
Nothing yeah, well no that's also a funny story because for,
whatever reason they offered me something at the start.

Speaker 4 (58:50):
Of the second half and then no more offers. After that, really, yeah.

Speaker 1 (58:57):
Well congratulations does anybody else know that you? Hit this.

Speaker 4 (59:03):
Told? Select? People, Yeah Yeah and i've just been on
a fire since then really the other fun thing to
do is to a follow a game LIKE the nba,
last night there were two games LATE that i, Could SEE.

Speaker 7 (59:20):
Like i think It Was.

Speaker 4 (59:22):
Golden state somebody was up nineteen points and it was
minus fifteen and a half and there was a minute.
Forty THREE so, i figured what, The hell i'll take,
a chance AND so i played them to cover the
fifteen and a half and. They did AND then i
also played the team that made the shot at the

(59:42):
end of, the game who Was. A phoenix phoenix made
a last minute BUCKET and i had them minus one and. A,
Half Yeah, devin booker are?

Speaker 5 (59:51):
You?

Speaker 1 (59:52):
MARRIED yeah. I am does your wife know? About this
not so much respect that your money you made?

Speaker 5 (01:00:02):
The?

Speaker 1 (01:00:02):
Wager, yeah Yeah well ken.

Speaker 5 (01:00:04):
Go.

Speaker 4 (01:00:04):
AHEAD yeah i was, gonna say she's one of those
who doesn't believe that.

Speaker 1 (01:00:08):
The gambling is a, Base thing so so she doesn't know?

Speaker 6 (01:00:12):
You, bet yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:00:15):
All right does she no chance she's listening to this?

Speaker 6 (01:00:18):
Right now there is.

Speaker 5 (01:00:19):
No shots she's.

Speaker 4 (01:00:21):
Cutting, hair oh.

Speaker 1 (01:00:24):
Very good we are not very Big in dayton. HAIR
salons i. Guess, well scott congrats on. Your winning is
always nice to hear. From you thank you. SO much
i feel it there. YOU go i kind of WONDER
that i don't want to out. My shelf how many
people who win money on FanDuel share that information with their?
OTHER half i. DON'T know i gotta get to a break,

(01:00:47):

Speaker 11 (01:02:53):
That for us i'm gonna start my comments here this
afternoon or this morning thanking THE place. That I left
xavier university Is a small Jesuit, School, in cincinnati ohio
and it is an amazing place to be the. College
basketball coach there has incredible meaning.

Speaker 6 (01:03:14):
To the university They're.

Speaker 11 (01:03:16):
Athletic director Greg Christopher And president colleen hanich, believed in
me gave, me an opportunity and it's. When change happens
there's always people and things going in. Two different, directions
that direction it's you wouldn't want me to be THE
coach if i didn't have some strong feelings about THE place.

Speaker 7 (01:03:37):
THAT i left i.

Speaker 11 (01:03:39):
Love that place if you think, About my journey i've
been a coach for thirty two years. In college basketball
eleven of those thirty Two, were at xavier eight as
the head coach in. Two different stints it's a place,
that trusted me. Believed in ME and when I tell
you i'm forever a part of them, and forever grateful

(01:03:59):
that would.

Speaker 12 (01:03:59):
Be An Understatement.

Speaker 1 (01:04:02):
There's sean miller Earlier today in austin being introduced as
the head Coach at The, University, of texas taran do
you have the question the answer to the question when
he was asked by someone From Something Called, lone STAR
alive which i think they Sell Stakes There, lone star

(01:04:23):
alive do you have the answer to the question about
how hard it Was to leave xavier for? A, second
time yes go ahead and give me that one.

Speaker 5 (01:04:32):
Live, dot com sean how much struggle was there in
trying to decide whether or Not to leave xavier for
a second time and ultimately what was the tipping point that?

Speaker 6 (01:04:40):
Brought, you here.

Speaker 11 (01:04:42):
Well it was a major struggle for me, on one
sense and that has nothing to do with the Great
place that i'm standing. At right now, it's you know
it tugs at your heart when people. Believe in you
and you've been at a place for eight years as
the head, coach ELEVEN years like, i had mentioned you have,
family and friends and you become tied to so many

(01:05:03):
of those teams and, players in moments and so much
of it is doing. More with less at a, place
like that there's a lot of pride that starts to
become a part of who you are when. You're in that.

Speaker 1 (01:05:18):
How do we feel about the quote doing more with
less at a. Place like that. HE'S being honest i
guess so sure that's gonna. Go very well but nothing
he can say that's going to make. Anybody FEEL good
like i will play the comments because, they are relevant
but as there's if, you're an aggrieved if, you're a

(01:05:40):
man if, you're pissed off if, you're you're heard if
you've been spend the last couple of Days Crying because sean,
miller is leaving there's absolutely nothing you could say that's
that's gonna make those people. Feel any better There's Also
this sean miller asked if any of His, players From
Xavier like Dalen Swayin, or ryan conwell will Follow. Him

(01:06:02):
To texas.

Speaker 13 (01:06:07):
Kirk Bowles From the, Houston, chronicle, Night. KIRK welcome sean
i wonder if any of your players are gonna come With,
you from xavier and you almost more into the portal
than high school players.

Speaker 11 (01:06:19):
To, STAY old yeah i can't really answer. The first,
part you know obviously have. Amazing loyalty too tell the
guy to pronounce all those kids have choices and no
different than the than the young players and the people
that are returning Here here at, texas.

Speaker 1 (01:06:36):
So yes why would He Not take Dalen Swayne and ryan,
conwell with Him. Well, WITH xavier yeah i mean if
the Very least what sean could have, done is, said,
REALLY quick dude i know we're not here To, talk
about xavier But. It's not xavier like at the very
least he could have saved some face on the press, conference, by, going,
hey pal thanks look forward to, talking with you But. It's, not.

(01:07:00):
Xavier okay thanks and, by, The way yes i'm gonna
bring all those players With. Me FROM xavier but i
can't say IT now because i have. Quote amazing loyalty.

Speaker 6 (01:07:15):
What?

Speaker 1 (01:07:15):
Do we have we have To get To brendaman? And
jones today is? It gonna be yesterday wasn't so. Much
about baseball today we.

Speaker 7 (01:07:22):
Hope.

Speaker 1 (01:07:22):
It's about baseball. WE do have i gotta. Get to
this our poll questions are A Service Of. United heartland
insurance and let me, tell you something if you've, got
a car you got, to insure it even if you're
like the guy driving. The Car today as i'm coming
up Seventy one and i'm in, the left lane, and

(01:07:42):
this dude either because he was asleep or not Paying
attention or god knows what comes over and comes this close.
To hitting me if, you're that guy you need a.
Lot of insurance so if you're the Guy, driving the
stanza Is That. A Nissan stanza i i'm not gonna
read your, license plate number but it STARTS with a
k and it ends. With a two if, you're that

(01:08:05):
guy you really need insurance because you're. A terrible Driver
uhis dot. Com go there they'll sell you insurance because
based on my drive to work today where you were
like driving and you got Off At The red. Bank
road EXIT don't think i didn't think, about Following you
but i'm, not that GUY and then i had to

(01:08:26):
like get to work and make sure that you didn't.
Actually hit me if you're that Guy in the stanza kind,
of dark green. Get your insurance that's why you. WERE
tens today i sent something like something. Was, going on yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:08:40):
That.

Speaker 1 (01:08:40):
Was it man i'm. Driving to work i'm going up
in the. Left hand lane i'm mine of, my OWN
business and i. See this guy he's, like all right
kind of, like you know sveering over, to the Left
and as i'm like trying, to pass him and, then
you know you never look over, and it's, like holy
crap that guy's Coming over and, i'd like HONKED and
then i had to get over, in the shoulder and
it's like and then he suddenly just goes across all

(01:09:02):
the lanes of traffic and gets Off At The red
bank road exit and then did god knows what else
wearing this like. Fluorescent yellow, coat this, dude this guy
this guy needs driving lessons and. HE NEEDS Insurance Uhi
Ns united heartland insurance cannot help you. With driving lessons

(01:09:23):
you're gonna have to go to a driving. School for
that maybe traffic school would be, good for you but you.
Probably need, insurance so yes that's, That made me that.
MADE me tense i got to get to the. Actual,
poll questions now we found out Today, that the crown
this prestigious basketball tournament that you, see is in they're

(01:09:44):
gonna have they're going to award the championship team three
hundred thousand dollars and the runner up is going to
get one. Hundred thousand dollars in the semi finalist get.
Fifty thousand dollars so that's what you see is going
to be be, playing with here. Playing for here so it's,
a prize pool it's three hundred thousand dollars if you
win the whole thing, to you know split among all

(01:10:05):
the players. ON the team I Believe the ncaa tournament,
should have this or if you win the national championship,
first of all should be worth more than three. Hundred
THOUSAND dollars Like cbs and turner and their Corporate Champions
at Capital One with Charles BARKLEY. And samuel L Jackson.
AND jennifer Gardner I. Like jennifer gardner they throw in

(01:10:26):
money and if you are on, the winning team Let's
say your kentucky wins the national, title this year those
players should get PAID at least. I think so the
question IS Should the ncaa tournament award prize money to
players on. The championship team the other pole question is
my bold Prediction for the reds is they win between
eighty two and. Eighty Four games i'm i'm not capable of. Hot.

(01:10:48):
Taking it man i'm not gonna be the guy who
tries to wow, everybody by hey they're gonna win, Ninety
THREE games. LIKE i don't i. Don't believe that i'm
also not gonna be the guy who's the just angry
dude Who believes the reds they're gonna lose like, Ninety
six games so between eighty two, AND eighty four i,
am too, pessimistic too optimistic? Or just right vote now

(01:11:12):
THE last time i got HIT the last i didn't,
GET hit, today I checked but i got rear ended.
In twenty eighteen and this Guy had, Like STEVE'S insurance like,
i got hit and, he, INSTANTLY admitted yeah i was looking.
At my phone, first of all stop looking at your phone. While,
You're driving, second, i'm like hey you know the cops,

(01:11:32):
are gonna come which he. Didn't want that and then
the cop, comes, and like well what? About insurance information
and this guy had like it looked like my second
grade daughter made. His insurance Card it literally and to get,
MY car fixed i had to go through. A billion
hoops it was like it Was literally like. Jessica's insurance
company so that Guy Also Needs. United heartland INSURANCE go

(01:11:53):
to uhi. Ins dot, com all. Right it's. Time thank
God brendanman And jones on baseball we this time.

Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
Next fifteen thirty that didn't exactly sound like.

Speaker 1 (01:12:05):
Real hard, contact all right uh, Five after FIVE this is.
Espn fifteen thirty My. Name is mullweger thank.

Speaker 3 (01:12:13):
You.

Speaker 1 (01:12:15):
For Listening today the reds Are playing the Reds. Tonight
in dayton big battle for the final two spots on
the Roster Between the Jacob Herdabes, and blake dunn. Who's
really fast so that's, gonna be big, uh opening Day

(01:12:42):
don't Forget oh AND stuart fair i Forgot. To mention
stuart It Feels like stuart fairchild has has Been with
the Reds since Like shin sued. Shoe was here so
three guys For Two, Spots Stu, Fairchild Blake done jake
herdabes and uh and and part of that drama will
play itself out Tonight. Up in dayton that game is
going to start in ja. Over An hour terry francona
talked a, short while ago we Will. Hear from, TITO we,

(01:13:06):
are I think, as reds fans we're all really Excited
that the reds have, an accomplished manager a manager, with
some gravitas a manager who has won with different. Types
of teams he's one, with veteran. Teams younger teams he's
one with teams that were a little bit more dominated
by Their starting pitching he's one with teams that the
offense had to overcome some of. The pitching deficiencies he's wanted,

(01:13:29):
a big market he's wanted, a smaller market not that it.
Really matters anymore but he's Managed In, the national league
though not with a ton Of, success in philadelphia and
he's obviously Managed In. The, american league again there really
is no Such Thing as American League and. National League
anymore terry francona is, a great manager, a great manager and,
let's be honest the storyline, of the season above and

(01:13:54):
beyond you know what certain individual players are. Going, TO
do statistically i think the story of the season is
going to be where is his impact felt the most
and how significant? Is his impact like we Talk about
the reds and the, margin for error, like last year the,

(01:14:17):
bad base running, the bad defense some of the stuff
that you couldn't measure in, the box score some of
the mistakes that just felt like they, kept popping up some.
Of THE decisions like i joked about this a little,
bit Last year and i'll joke. About It Now the
terry francona honeymoon will be over If on Opening day
the reds run the contact, play without success and it's

(01:14:40):
like it's ONE thing and i understand the intent. Behind the,
Play and again i'm not going to break down the
contact play here On a Random, tuesday at march but
it just it felt Like Last, year david bell with
the exception of his last THREE weeks when i thought
he did a really good job maneuvering all, the pitching
injuries it felt like every button he hit last year

(01:15:02):
ended up being. The wrong button much of that is
a function, of player, performance but still it felt like
every button he hit last year was. The wrong button
it felt, like the message, whatever it was. Wasn't getting
through it felt like players kind of took. Advantage of
him it felt like there really wasn't nearly. As much
accountability it kind of felt like there was a little
bit of a. Tune out factor it is the story,

(01:15:22):
of the. Season, ye know Granted They hired terry francona almost,
six months ago so we've talked. About his impact but
among the different storylines that will unfold over the, next
six months. That's number one this guy comes out of retirement,
with an opportunity and think About The opportunity terry francona

(01:15:42):
has in front, of them like, If this works, if
this works he goes to the postseason with, a third team,
he kidd me, if this works he has a chance
to become the first manager in thirty years to advance. In,
the postseason like, if this works what we are saying
Moving Forward about terry francona and his managerial. Resume is

(01:16:02):
insane but in, THE short term i want to see
where his impact is. Felt the most is it going
to be in their record in? One run games is
it going to be, the first, time you know we see,
a blatant mistake but guys are going to get thrown
out on. The base pass it's it's, when it happens

(01:16:25):
and the thinking behind it. Can't be explained it's, when
it happens and the. Reasons are stupidity sometimes an outfielder
is going to make. A great throw sometimes the dude
standing on the mound is going to make a really
good move. To, first base like it's not going to

(01:16:45):
be well the first time somebody. Gets picked off if
you watch, LAST year's team i think you Know exactly what.
I'm talking about those moments where it felt like somebody's,
not paying attention or those moments where it felt like
somebody's not really using their head or those, Moments, WERE
like god i saw this guy do, that last week
and now he just did the. Same thing again are these?
Things getting corrected and. So that's it it's the plays.

(01:17:10):
In the field it's when there is, a rough spell
which invariably. There always, are last Year when the reds
went through some, rough stretches, EARLY you know i, would,
hear like well They Really, miss JOEY vado and i
think there was some, Validity to that, but it's like
can't can some leadership come? From the dugout can it
come from? The coaching staff can it come from? The

(01:17:32):
manager itself can can It Come? From terry francona this
year it, is to me it's one of the biggest
storylines in. The entire sport this hugely beloved figure who
has nothing, else to Prove comes to cincinnati and manages a.
Team with upside can he helped them get more out?
Of that upside it's. Story number one i've pegged this

(01:17:58):
team to win, eighty three games somewhere between eighty two,
and eighty four and eighty three's obviously right there. IN
the middle i think there are lots of. Reasons for
optimism we know what they, are right like it's the
starting staff has a chance to, be really. Good really
good there are and as much, as we can we
can break down the back end of the roster and

(01:18:20):
debate whether or not they should have made one more.
MOVE this offseason i think positionally they have four. High
ceiling guys that's not to mean that other players can't and,
should And Contribute But ellie dela cruz is a. High
ceiling guy like there's not an evaluator who believes that
his talent, isn't just limitless. Like everybody believes everybody who,

(01:18:42):
has studied, him watched him who has a more trained
and EDUCATED eye, than i do would say that this
guy's a chance to be one of the very best.
Players in baseball we've talked about. This A Bunch ellie
dela cruz goes into this season with a billion dollars
hagging in, front of him because. That can happen he
Can be either baseball's first one billion dollar Player or
maybe baseball's next one billion dollar player if somebody else takes.

(01:19:06):
That title first there's a. Lot of upside there's a.
High ceiling there as we could we could talk about
what they don't have in the, corner outfield spots, or
you know some of the the uncertainty on the roster
and are do they? Have Enough Depth. Elie dela cruz
if this team is going, to take off has to
come close, to his ceiling. His productivity ceiling and, by

(01:19:28):
the way that that includes striking out maybe slightly less
frequently and getting caught stealing. Slightly less frequently it certainly means,
making fewer errors means making. Fewer mental MISTAKES matt McLain's
i think a, high ceiling player former, first round pick,
awesome rookie season not, the most experienced he's played In
eighty nine, Big league games but that team two years
ago where there was this non stop run of guys

(01:19:51):
getting called. Up and contributing on that team, Two years
ago matt McClain was. Their best player if if the
step forward we were hoping to see from him last
year is, Taken this year matt McClain could Be possibly
An all star Christian. And karnassion strand it was easy to.
Forget last year, first of all it was easy to

(01:20:13):
forget about him entirely because, he barely played but because
most of the talk was about injury and inability to
stay healthy and the weirdness, behind the injury with the
fact that they had to go back and fix the,
first hand injury like it's kind of easy. To forget
that in twenty twenty three when he got caught up
THE dude raked i think he's a. HIGH ceiling guy

(01:20:34):
i bought This prop bet Christian and karnassion strand over
seventeen and a half home runs if he plays, THE
full season i think he clears. THAT with ease i
think he's a. High CEILING guy And I fold tyler stevenson,
into that situation. Into That conversation tyler stevenson's one of
the best Catchers In, the national. League improved defensively they've

(01:20:57):
got a good Backup In the. JOSE travigno extension i
thought was a pretty Smart Move. By nick krawl they've
always had a willingness to invest in catchers and to
have a good. Pair Moving forward tyler stevenson had a
really good. SEASON last year i think he's a. High
ceiling guy if those four high ceiling guys each come close, to,
their ceiling well then this team. Can TAKE off what

(01:21:19):
i worry, ABOUT is offensively i feel like the team's
collective ceiling. Is pretty low. The roster itself the roster,
itself seems incomplete and that's Exacerbated by the stevenson Injury and.
The steer injury but. It still feels it feels like

(01:21:40):
if you just look at the battle for the final,
two roster spots or just look at, the team overall
you look at that bunch and you, just wonder like
should they have gotten? One more guy one OF the
things i think is going to be interesting this year
is to see what the approach at. The, deadline is

(01:22:00):
now there's two. Things About, that Number one if i'm
asking about the approach at the deadline five months, before
THE deadline or i should say four months, before the
deadline doesn't that kind of acknowledge the fact that this
team could? Use a guy, but all right we're gonna
spend a lot of time wondering What can, the reds,
get who's available who's, the right fit what, would it

(01:22:21):
cost And will the reds? MAKE a move i Badly,
want THE reds and i think. We all do If you're,
a reds fan you would. Agree with this we Badly
want the reds to be at a place where they
have almost no choice but to. Add a piece and,
by the way even, if, they're really, really really good
we're gonna want them to. Add a piece could, Be

(01:22:41):
a believer it could be, a starting pitcher probably gonna.
Be an outfielder.

Speaker 6 (01:22:47):
Do?

Speaker 1 (01:22:47):
They Do It does nick krawl do it to the
degree that what he does has a good impact on the?
Team THIS year but i kind of go in that.
Eighty FOUR range and i a buddy of mine told
me today that's, a COP out, And i. SAID i'm
not i don't possess the ability to say something on

(01:23:09):
THE air that. I DON'T believe so i would love
to TELL you that I think the reds are going
to win. Ninety TWO games if, I said that, i'd
BE lying and i. Don't Do that i'm my job
is TO tell, how i FEEL say. HOW i feel
i think they're. Gonna be better it's almost impossible to
be worse in. One run games it's almost Impossible To

(01:23:32):
imagine terry francona not cleaning up some of the stuff
that just killed this. Team LAST year and i think
it's impossible to not get excited about the starting pitching
although there are still some guys who have to perform
better and have. TO stay HEALTHY i just i worry
that what brings it down is the fact that this

(01:23:53):
offense is gonna be a little bit more punch less than.
We would like. But we'll see can't wait to find Out.
Starting on thursday five point three seven four nine fifteen
thirty is. Our phone Number You'll hear terry francona in just.
A few minutes we've spent some time today Talking about the.
Xavier Basketball, situation sean Miller introduced, at texas today said

(01:24:16):
some Nice things about xavier not going to make anybody.
Feel any Good we had rick. Brooring on before you'll
hear part of that. Conversation later on he certainly seems
to believe that the most Likely Outcome is chris mack.
Gets The gig uh AND you know I would be
i would be surprised if, it, didn't HAPPEN obviously but

(01:24:37):
i think if, it didn't happen it would be insanely
interesting to find out why it. Did Not happen chris
mack had an Awesome run in Xavior final FOUR final,
fours ncaa Tournaments made the elite eight we're. A one,
seed in eighteen we're, a two seed and sixteen some.
Hollatiously Good Teams the sean. MILLER residual pain, I you

(01:25:03):
know I think every xavier fan has kind, of moved
on and if, you are ONE understandably so i continued
to kind of laugh at The Idea that shawn Miller
Handed or shan miller was handed a Life Preserver. BY
xavier UNIVERSITY i JUST i think i think too highly
of him. AS a coach i do encourage You To

Here is terry francona on, that particular topic with audio
that we Have Stolen from Marshall kramsky. Of channel nine.

Speaker 12 (01:27:49):
Player is a lot. More than usual where do you
think this team is right now when it comes.

Speaker 6 (01:27:54):
TO being, accountable.

Speaker 12 (01:27:58):
I mean we asked him every morning to try, to
you know we worked them pretty.

Speaker 10 (01:28:19):

the game right and they've done a really good job of.

Speaker 1 (01:28:27):
That this, spring all right, there You Go. There's terry
francona we Stole That from marshall kramsky, talking about accountability and,
they had meetings and all the players in my contract would.
Be no MEETINGS like if I Was a major, LEAGUE
baseball PLAYER i would i would incorporate LANGUAGE that said
i don't have to. Attend any meetings it is one

(01:28:50):
of my great goals in life to spend, my entire
career whether it's solely in this, business OR others where
i never have to. Regularly ten meetings but, they have
meetings and the good news is all the players showed.
Up On time terry francona has been A Part of
opening day for years and years and years in a,

(01:29:11):
lot of places including here in nineteen eighty seven when
he Was, With the reds and So here is tito
on What makes? Opening day special what Is.

Speaker 12 (01:29:20):
It About cincinnati's opening day that makes? IT so special
i was stunned. IN eighty seven.

Speaker 10 (01:29:25):
I didn't, REALIZE i mean, i always, knew you know
back then it was the First game always now it's,

if we can play like, we, wanna play it.

Speaker 12 (01:29:52):
It'll get Exciting.

Speaker 1 (01:29:54):
It's a tito Talking about opening day back. In eighty
seven here's who do we steal? That audio from tarren?
As A Friend caleb Caleb no from. Channel, nine right,
well you know we give credit to the people that we.
Steal audio from others don't. Have that policy we will,

(01:30:15):
steal the audio but we will always mention who we,
stole it from so that really makes. It not stealing
now there are outlets where they will just take the
audio and not give credit to who they. Got it from,
so for instance From Our Guy, trags Mike petrelliah. HERE'S
matt McClain i cannot Imagine how excited matt McClain is

(01:30:38):
to play tomorrow and to put last, season behind him
because it was, a wasted year didn't play in the major.

ABOUT sean miller's CATCHPHRASES i never thought i Would Read
something about sean miller that Made Me think about butch,
jones that you see.

Speaker 6 (01:42:21):
That's the exact person that came.

Speaker 5 (01:42:24):
To, my MIND today No When i saw sean miller
get Up there and tell texas fans that his culture
is all, about quote all in which is the motto
that he just used for the entire last season and
even made a Documentary, around HERE at xavier all i
Could Think of was Butch jones Going. From Cincinnati, with
rep The sea moving To. Tennessee And using rep the

(01:42:47):
tee that was the first thing that, came to my
mind and quite honestly one of the things that prompted.

Speaker 1 (01:42:52):
Me to write, that IT is interesting and i. THINK
it says value a Lot, of us go okay he was,
here for Three years, made a sweet sixteen made, the
tournament this. Year won a game, for what it's worth
sandwiched around a, season that. WAS very very underwhelming i,
GUESS at face value i look, At, that and go
okay that's. Not A bad run when i, step away

(01:43:13):
FROM it and when, i READ europ piece, Suddenly, i
feel like god you Know What the entire sean miller experienced.
These last three. Years kind of underwhelming.

Speaker 6 (01:43:23):
That's the. Right word to use it's not.

Speaker 5 (01:43:25):
That it was Bad It's not that sean miller wasn't
a slight improvement from The Four.

Speaker 6 (01:43:29):
Years of travis steel it. Was A slight improvement but
Xavier Didn't.

Speaker 5 (01:43:34):
Bring back sean miller to, EVERYONE at the time i
think felt was one of was probably their best coach
in school, history at that point to do slightly better
than what they had done.

Speaker 6 (01:43:43):
The last Four Years they brought sean miller.

Speaker 5 (01:43:45):
Back with the idea that he was Going to build
something savior and that he was going to get them,
to a higher level take them, to the next level
is the, way he phrased it Which everyone understands a
xavier is A final four and i'm not saying that
should be the standard coaches, Are, Held to it david it's.

Speaker 6 (01:44:01):
Never happened there before but to come in have the
first losing.

Speaker 5 (01:44:05):
Season since nineteen, ninety five ninety six the First year
that the XAVIER went, TO the, a ten i believe
and follow that up with the year in which had
you not gotten an absolute miracle run down the stretch,
winning seven straight games you wouldn't have made the tournament
again in. Back. TO back years ah i Don't think
that's what xavier fans had in mind.

Speaker 6 (01:44:25):
For him, coming back and again this wasn't.

Speaker 5 (01:44:27):
Just A random coach. That david Was Hiring this was sean.

Speaker 6 (01:44:31):
Miller coming back to xavier after he had.

Speaker 5 (01:44:34):
Gone through all the stuff he WENT through, with the
fbi Investigation, getting fired from arizona being without a, job
for multiple years and wanting to get.

Speaker 6 (01:44:42):
Back into the sport xavier.

Speaker 5 (01:44:44):
Stuck their neck out for him because of what he,
could bring to them because of the upside that he
could bring and the thought that he was going to.
Do something special there looking at, IT through that prism
i don't think there's any way to see it as
he achieved. Anything close to that how.

Speaker 1 (01:45:00):
How much of that is do the factors?

Speaker 5 (01:45:02):
BEYOND his direct control i think he, would TELL you
everything and i think people Behind the scenes that xavier
would tell you that had anil money that was Very
competitive in the big, eats and quite honestly looking forward
the way things are going to go with Revenue sharing
in THE, big ten and sec going to the school
that had a giant Football program, that is priority, one two,

(01:45:24):
and three and, oh by the way you're also behind.
Baseball at that school you're third behind Football. AND baseball
at texas i don't know that you're in that much
better of A situation from an nil and being able.

Speaker 6 (01:45:36):
To Get player standpoint.

Speaker 5 (01:45:37):
Certainly texas has, a much Bigger brand certainly has texas.
Has More, overall resources but texas with, all of those
resources and with a top five pick in the draft
this season and another first projected, first rounder this season
finished fourteenth out of SIXTEEN, teams in the sec it
ain't going to.

Speaker 6 (01:45:56):
Be EASY there EITHER and i don't I mean with
the usta as we see keep.

Speaker 5 (01:46:01):
Cropping up every year one year they played too. Tough
of a schedule it was unfair because They had To.

Speaker 6 (01:46:05):
Play houston and purdue then the next year it.

Speaker 5 (01:46:07):
Was one guy got injured who averaged ten points at,
a mid major school and that was going to Be
a difference Between xavier making a final. FOUR run or
not i just don't know that. THAT'S how This works
i think xager is actually in a pretty good spot
and actually does have pretty Good Resources in the big
east for.

Speaker 6 (01:46:23):
A coach that views it as.

Speaker 1 (01:46:24):
That Type of job.

Speaker 5 (01:46:25):
But Sean clearly didn't sean dodd as a lower level
job and a place he needed to get out of
quickly because he felt.

Speaker 6 (01:46:32):
He needed every advantage that he could get To get.

Speaker 1 (01:46:35):
To A Final Four rick Burring. Musketeer report dot com
we'll talk about who's next in, the head coach's office
what do, you expect to happen and, maybe to a
degree what has happened with regard to the players who
were on The team as of friday night, in the transfer.

Speaker 6 (01:46:52):
Portal there's like one or. TWO of Them Left i
think Ryan, Godwell Still at Zager. Roddy anderson still xavier that.

Speaker 5 (01:47:04):
Might be about it there. Might be someone, else i'm
forgetting there but. IT doesn't, really matter i mean everyone
who wants. To leave will leave you're basically going to.
Be starting over completely but that's kind of how it
goes in. THIS sport, in general i mean even if you,
don't lose your coach you kind of have to turn
over most of your roster from year to year now
and without, when a.

Speaker 6 (01:47:19):
Coach leaves it's almost. Always A Complete rebuild.

Speaker 5 (01:47:22):
The Sean Miller situation with travis, steels team was very
very unique that first year, that he took over where
he was able to kind of keep nearly the whole
team in place and make A run to The sweet.
SIXTEEN with steels players i think that was a situation
that you're not going. To see VERY often so If i,
WAS a xavier fan i would definitely be expecting more
of a.

Speaker 1 (01:47:40):
Rebuild this time around Why Haven't they? Hired, CHRIS mack yet.

Speaker 6 (01:47:44):
Well i think they want to.

Speaker 5 (01:47:45):
GO through, a, process i mean look this, thing just
happened yesterday AND there are other i Think Everyone heard
that chris mack was very interested in this job before,
it was even, open and so initially all the momentum
in terms of public Information And buzz. Went chris max's
direction and that's not to say that, he ISN'T the
favorite because. I think he is i think it's Probable

(01:48:07):
but he'll be. Xavier's NEXT head coach but i don't.
THINK it's done yet i think there, are STILL other
candidates and i just think they don't have the means
To back channel like chris did, before the job opened
to get his name out there through local. Media and
other things so partly that's.

Speaker 6 (01:48:22):
Why you're hearing So much.

Speaker 5 (01:48:23):
Momentum, BEHIND chris's name initially, i think you Know Each
time that greig christopher has hired a New head coach since,
i've been doing this it's been about a three, to
FOUR day process so.

Speaker 6 (01:48:36):
I would imagine that's.

Speaker 5 (01:48:37):
Probably a, REASONABLE timeline Once again i know i've seen
the flight tracker information that there's a Flight coming in
from charleston.

Speaker 6 (01:48:44):
To lunkin This Evening.

Speaker 5 (01:48:45):
Maybe that's chris mack and maybe it really will be
done that soon because of the transfer portal era and
you need to get these things. Done so quickly now
But based on what i've BEEN hearing this afternoon i
don't believe that. TO be the case i think there's
still going to be a little bit bit of a
process that.

Speaker 1 (01:49:00):
Needs, to play out well there have to be broken
relationships or hurt feelings that. Need To get fixed if,
CHRIS is the guy i think those have probably already.
BEEN taken, care of i mean it's been a while He's.
Been back, AT xavier you.

Speaker 5 (01:49:16):
Know i, assume that you know there's Rumors out There About,
chris and greg, christopher the athletic director and how well
they got along at the end of the tenure Before
He left the louisville but with, MOST of, these things
i mean you're talking. ABOUT two, professional guys, I, mean
you know chris he's, a down to, earth Normal Good
guy and greg christopher, is, a very smart measured. Level
HEADED human being like i think two grown ups like

(01:49:38):
that can pretty easily get over whatever differences they might
have had in the heat of A moment when When,
Greg was when sean chris was taking A. Bigger JOB
at louisville so i imagine there are no.

Speaker 1 (01:49:49):
Issues on That Front if, if chris mack decided would
none of us expect him to do to Go you.
Know what i'm good i'm gonna Go hang out in.
Charleston for, another year who then would? Be the best candidate.

Speaker 6 (01:50:03):
THAT'S a good.

Speaker 4 (01:50:03):
QUESTION i don't, know i don't know to, Be, honest with.

Speaker 1 (01:50:09):
You like what do you want me to?

Speaker 6 (01:50:10):
SAY they're best.

Speaker 5 (01:50:11):
Candidate i don't know there there are going to be
other candidates. That they look at if, you're asking me
form like my favorite candidate probably wouldn't.

Speaker 6 (01:50:19):
Be on their board if you're.

Speaker 5 (01:50:20):
Talking About other, names THAT i've heard which i think is,
a More Interesting Conversation like rick patino junior Is a.
NAME that i've heard i think they wanted To Get.
INVOLVED with pat kelsey i think. HIS buyout Prohibits That
i think luke murray Is the assistant at yukon who
Was an assistant For chris mac at xavier.

Speaker 6 (01:50:38):
Is an, INTERESTING name BUT yeah i think i think
those are some Of the.

Speaker 5 (01:50:41):
Other names i've heard there's probably one or two other
that are, involved IN the process But i do think
chris is.

Speaker 1 (01:50:46):
The, favorite right, now yeah and uh and, should, BE
all right man i know you have. A lot going
on i appreciate you, doing this as always and we'll probably.
