Fourteen away from four o'clock. Thisis ESPN fifteen thirty. The UC Spring
Game is on Saturday at Nipperds Stadium. It starts at noon. Year two
of the Bearcats as members of theBig Twelve and a whole bunch of new
faces. New defensive coordinator lones Andtalked about Scott Saderfield, head coach at
the University of Cincinnati, is withus to talk about springballing so much more.

(00:22):
Coach, It's good to have you. What's going on? Yeah,
I appreciate you having me on.Man, We're extremely busy's just been going
through our spring practice. We havepractice number fourteen today. They give you
fifteen practices, so we're about towrap this thing up, which obviously wraps
up on Saturday for the spring game. It's been a very good spring,
you know, a lot of thingsthat we put in this spring as far
as defense. You know, wehired a new defensive coordinator and coach fight

(00:47):
and brings a wealth of experience fromthe Big Twelve being at Iowa State for
the last the eight season. Soreally been fun to watch his defense come
together this spring. But but alot of guys have done some great things
and it's been fun competition and youknow all along, yeah, and I
want to get into some of that. I think fans naturally are going to
compare where things are right now towhere they were a year ago. And

(01:07):
you know, when when you're newin a place, there's always so many
more challenges on top of conducting practice, learning the personnel, implementing schemes.
So give me an idea of howfar ahead you are now compared to maybe
a year ago. I think, you know, certainly, you know,
if you kind of break it downoffensively, we're we're way way ahead.
I mean, you know, wewere sitting here coming back having played in

(01:30):
the Big Twelve last year, andwe're bringing back our top seven offensive linemen,
including the five starters. You're bringingback a thousand yard Russia and Corey
Connor. You bringing back, youknow, your your top wide receiver that
at you know, right around eighthundred and fifty yards. So offensively,
we're bringing a lot of guys backthat that actually competed at a high level
in the Big Twelve last year.I think fifth in the country and Russian
thirty two, I think the totaloffense, So you know, I think

(01:53):
that that's obviously way ahead of wherewe were last year. Defensively, you
know, you are bringing in,like I said, I knew the diviensive
quartering in coach Bight and a newscheme and we and we also brought in
some new players. I mean wewe're gonna have eleven new defensive backs.
I mean that we that was certainlya weakness in our defense last year.
We needed to upgrade that and wewe have done that. And in high
school ranks, uh and and inthe portal and and I think those guys

(02:15):
that really added some good depth forus in the secondary of this spring.
And you know, so I thinkwe're we're ahead there. You know,
we look in the secondary, andthen then linebacker wise, I think we're
you know, sitting here in greatshape. You know, Dingle's a guy
that that comes back. I thoughtI had a solid the year last year,
obviously a year wiser, year stronger. And then defensive line wise,
you know, you're bringing back youknow, obviously Dante Corleone on the top

(02:38):
defensive lineman in the country, alongwith some other guys that that started up
front. I mean, so Ithink I think we're are ahead of the
game compared to last year a yearmore in our program. You know,
our strength staff has done an outstandingjob, you know with those guys adding
weight and strength, you know, with that, you know, and also
we're we're in this era now wherewhere you do change over your rosters quite

(02:59):
a bit. You know, we'vegot in seventeen transfers in January. You
know, ten high school players graduatedearly and came in. So you know,
it was a lot of new guys, new faces, man, but
they really just came right in tostart, went to work, and that's
what you like to see. Andso yeah, it's been where we're we're
ahead compared to where we were lastyear. Go inside that process for me.
You're implementing a new defense with anew defensive coordinator and a whole bunch

(03:20):
of new players. Well, oneof the things you do is, you
know, before you start your springpractice. You know, we had I
think around seven weeks and so wewere meeting with our guys, you know,
putting in the new scheme in theJanuary February period, you know,
prior to practice, and so theyget a little bit of head start there
in the classroom. But since webrought in a lot of guys on defense.
You know, they're they're going tolearn a new defense regardless, and

(03:40):
so having the new defensive corner tocome in. Obviously, what you want
to do initially is to keep itsimple. You know, we put our
base defense in and I feel likethe first maybe four practices really was just
one defense. You know, you'rereally not even doing a lot of different
things. You're just getting the basein, teaching them the fundamentals of the
defense, where your help's going tobe coming from, where you want to
force the ball carrier, all thosetype things, and then you start implementing

(04:03):
a little bit more defense. Andthat's what we were able to do.
Put you know, put some pressuresin. You know, you're dropping a
you're bringing you're even blitsing, you'rebringing six. You know, you're going
all out bits, so all allthe different things that you want to do
throughout spring practice and then really findout what the guys can do, what
they can't do, and trying tofind them in positions. That's the other
thing. So if you've got anew defense, or where are you fitting

(04:24):
this defense? And so we've we'vebeen doing that. You're meeting every other
day when you're not practicing, andso it's a lot of classroom work,
but then you get on the fieldand putting it in. So there's a
lot, a lot of work thatgoes into it. But that will carry
on to the summer as well. You know, once we finished on Saturday,
you know, we'll we'll our guyshave one more week of school,
they'll get a few weeks off, they'll be right back here. So we'll

(04:44):
continue everything that we did this springall summer long for two months Junior July
before we head into our August camp. You're always emphasizing physicality. You talked
about the strength and conditioning program, which started the day after last season ended.
But I mean, look, you'veyour program has to to the level
of physicality that the Big Twelve brings. There were times where it felt like
you guys did that last year, but you got to close that gap.

(05:06):
So how much have you just emphasizedthat this offseason? Yeah, well,
I mean a ton. I meanhad the whole offense. It's the most
difficult off season our players have beenthrough. They'll they'll tell you that it
was very intense, very competitive, pushing them to the point where they have
to question themselves if this really worthit, you know. I mean that's

(05:26):
where you want to get them toand then and then come on and come
out on the other side of it. And then they did that, you
know, with the support of theirteammates to get through it. Leadership was
big this off season, you know, particularly from the guys that went through
that that last year. You know, you know, you think about the
last couple of games, man,it was it was not good at all.
We didn't finish strong, you know, and I think that that just
motivated our guys and propelled them intothe off season that to have a great

(05:48):
off season, and they did that. We know, we had a lot
of work to do this off season. We're right in the middle of it.
We're putting in that work. It'sa very competitive Big twelve. We
all know that you have to ldevates your game, you know, as
far as an individual, and youalso have to bring in some some talent
and you know, some players thatwe feel like competing this level. So
so there's a lot of things. That's all the aspects of it. You

(06:11):
know. I think character and disciplineplays a big part of it. That's
some of the things we're working onthis all season. As well, you
know, and and and it's justa different vibe around here now. I
think anybody that's that's come around ourpractices and watched us and hung out a
little bit, they can sense andfill it, you know. But that
still doesn't guarantee anything in the fall. So we've got to continue to push
our guys to the limit as wehead throughout this summer and headed into uh,

(06:33):
you know, when we go tohigher ground. Obviously you've got a
lot of early enrollees. That's apart of the modern college football reality,
and it's it's a great chance forthem to get to get ahead. And
obviously you're going to have kids whocan't show up on campus to the summer.
But what is it like when you'recoaching somebody who was playing high school
football just weeks before? Yeah,I mean, you know these guys that

(06:54):
came into high school players who broughtten inman, we have been very,
very pleased with these guys. Youwill be seeing some of those faces this
fall. And that's one of thethings I think by by graduating early,
coming in mid term, you've givingyourself a chance to go through spring practice
to be able to see the fieldin the fall, and there will be
several of these guys that that willbe able to do that. I mean,

(07:15):
Simeon Coleman is a guy that comesto mind of the linebacker position.
He came in and started turning headsright off the bat. I feel like,
you know, Zahirski and Grover, two tight ends, came in and
did some really nice things in thetight end room. You know, Saints
and Safety, you know, thea couple of corners, a Johnson,
I mean, you know, reallygood ones to Yeah, I mean,
I'm really really pleased with these freshmenthat came in. Now now it is

(07:35):
You're right, it takes a littlebit something, you know, different for
those guys mentally, because they shouldbe in high school right now, and
all of a sudden they're on acampus getting up at five thirty in the
morning, coming to do workouts andthey're you know, they're they're like,
what's going on. These guys dida great job with that. You can
really see how much improved they've gottenthroughout the fifteen spring practices, and now
they're going to be that much betteronce they head through the summer and head

(07:57):
in the fall camp. They willbe ahead of the other guys that will
be coming into summer, the othereleven freshmen. So I'm excited for these
guys, excited for this class thatwe brought in. A lot of us
who are there on Saturday are goingto be watching Brendan Soursby very very closely.
Give us an idea of some ofthe things you've seen from him.
Yeah, you know, Brandon camein and he was shooting. Man,
it's about too a little over twoforty two forty one. The other day

(08:18):
he just weighed in. He's rightat two twenty nine, two thirty,
So, I mean he's got hisbody right, He's lost down some weight.
He can run. He's for abig man, he can still,
you know, pick him up andput him down. He's got a very
good release, quickly accurate passer. You know. Really going to come down
to him is continue to learn theoffense, no one where to go with
the football, how to distribute thefootball. You know, he's a great

(08:39):
teammate. I think one thing we'veseen throughout the spring practices is how he
interacts with the coaches, how heinteracts with the other players, you know,
and I think it's it's a refreshingrefreshing to have, you know,
a quarterback to come in and beable to pick right up as if he's
been here, you know, hiswhole career, and that's that's that's something
great to see. And I givecredit to the other guys in the quarterback

(09:01):
room. Those guys have been awesomefor him and each other the way they
just pick each other up. SoI think people will recognize his arm and
be able to say, you canthrow the football, but also the way
he's been able to move. Youhave the spring Brank, the spring game,
and then obviously that wraps up springpractice and then the second wave of
the portal reopen. So kind ofwalk me through the next few weeks.

(09:22):
Yeah, you know, Saturday,we have our spring game. Next the
following week is when the portal opensup. It'll be open for a couple
of weeks where you know, everybodyin the country if they feel like they
want to test the waters, they'reable to put their name in the portal
and see see you know what what'sout there. We'll be meeting with our
players all next week, you know, and just individually going over to the

(09:43):
spring practice kind of where we're seeingthem, you know, things they need
to work on and how they needto get better throughout the summer, you
know, and then also see wherewe're at. You know, we do
have scholarships available as we sit heretoday, you know, we'll we'll probably
looking anywhere from four to five tosix guys to be at on a football
team. A lot will be dependingon on what's out there and available.
You hope you don't have a wholelot of turnover at this point in the

(10:03):
game. You know, we hopethat you know, this team we have
right now is going to be youknow, ninety eight percent the team will
be playing with in the fall. You know, I do recognize that there
is opportunity for guys to get inthe portal, but I feel like that,
you know, we do have astrong culture here now. Guys want
to be a part of this team, want to be a part of the
city of Cincinnati, and to bea Bearcat. So I think we got

(10:24):
a lot going forwards in that regard. Got the spring game on Saturday,
you will have on campus tomorrow nighta pair of guys who are going to
be in the Pro Football Hall ofFame one day. Take me through the
relationship between your program and Jason andTravis Kelsey. Yeah, I mean to
man, where everybody's so proud ofthem. There's no question about it,
what they've been able to accomplish, you know, particularly the last few years

(10:46):
here. I mean they've they've gottenso much notoriety, you know, as
the best at that for their position, you know, the best center in
the NFL and the best tie inin the NFL. And for those guys
to be Bearcats and to call Cincinnatihomes in credible, you know for us,
and we're so proud of them. And then the fact now that they're
they're coming back here at maybe theheight of their careers, they're they're as

(11:07):
popler now as they've probably ever been. And for them to come here and
do you know, have their podcasthere, one of the most popular podcasts
in the world, to do itright here on our campus in front of
man, we're gonna have over twelvethousand people coming to their podcast. I
mean, that's that's insane to methat even think about, you know,
listen to to a couple of guysgo up there and talk. I mean
that that's incredible, which is butthat's how popular they are, and that's

(11:31):
how proud I think everybody in Cincinnatiis of them, and you know,
and they've got a lot of youknow, they got a lot of cloud
out there, and so for themto be able to come here, the
spotlight's gonna be us, you know, on Thursday when they're here, and
you know, but so yeah, just I mean, I'm really just extremely
proud of them. We get tohang out with them a little bit on
Thursday and Friday. You know,we're bringing back a bunch of a ton
of our football players that that's that'splayed here in the past. We've got

(11:52):
a big golf tournament on Friday. So we're gonna have a lot of fun
this weekend with this alumni weekend forfor all these former Bearcats should be a
lot of fun and looking forward toSaturday on top of Tomorrow night. Coach,
I always appreciate the time, man, Thank you so much. Appreciation
man, Take care you got it. Scott Saderfield, head football coach at
the University of Cincinnati. The springgame at noon on Saturday at Knippert Stadium,

(12:16):
and then you know, the offseasoncalendar is weird because the portal then
reopens up and some of the guysyou see on Saturday might be with other
programs by the time the season comesaround, and obviously they could be bringing
players from other places. I thinkas the season went on last year and
depth becomes an issue, and asthey played, you know, frankly more

(12:37):
physical teams. I think at thatOklahoma State game on the road toward the
end of the year, they justgot pushed around. West Virginia just pushed
them around. So rising to thelevel of that physicality in the Big Twelve,
on top of just adding better playersand maybe upgrading things a little bit
at quarterback, I'm really interested tosee if this team is more capable of
just matching what Big twelve teams bringin terms of physicality. Always nice to

(13:01):
catch up with Scott Saderfield. Wehave open lines five one, three,
seven, four nine, fifteen thirtyand eight sixty six, seven oh two,
three, seven, seven six,a few more Reds issues. There
is something that I think is alittle problematic when it comes to the Reds.
We'll get to that and we're goingto do a segment for me on
Friday. We'll get to that nextfour o'clock ESPN fifteen thirty. This is

(13:26):
sports set up. I'm Christine Lesithe official announcement today from Arkansas. John
Caliperi is its new men's basketball coachfive year deal, starting salary seven million
dollars annually, one and a halfmillion lesson than what he was making at
Kentucky. NBA Buck Starr Gianas Antetokoupo'savoided a serious achilles injury after last night's
fall. ESPN's Adrian Wrjanowski's reporting hisleft achilles tendon is fully intact. His

(13:52):
return to play depends on how quicklyhis cap string heals. It's not just
on the Bucks players to make surethey hang on to second in the East,
and Giannis's absence points out ESPN's HendrickPerkins that that's a chance for Doc
Rivers to actually shut a lot ofpeople up. He gets to start to
change the Navy right because he's gonnahave to coach really dive into his bag,

(14:13):
and I believe he can. Ibelieve he will. I mean,
it's gonna be a hard task, but I think they got enough pieces to
get it done and to survive untily'all is get back. The NHL's for
bearing a contingency plan that could relocatethe Arizona Coyotes to Utah next season.
The league is skeptical about the team'snewest plan to build an arena in Phoenix,
reports ESPNS Emily Kaplan and Greg Rushinski. Hey, it's a Residents super

(14:37):
Bowl, Chaff Chris Kenny coming onThursday. We know Keller Williams will be
the first quarterback drafted, but I'lltell you who would be second off the
board when I revealed my mop twopoint Oho, it's unsports for like six
am Eastern right here on ESPN Radio, ESPN two and ESPNU. This report is sponsored
