Getting closer and closer to the NFLDraft, which is a week from tomorrow
night. Don't forget we're broadcasting fromLong Necks and Wilder three to six next
Thursday afternoon. Joe Goodberry, oneof the absolute must follows and must watches
his Bengals on The Brain Show withJoe Goodberry is available on YouTube. He's
(00:22):
a terrific Twitter follow as well, and always kind enough to join us whenever
we reach out. It's good tohave you. If if the number,
if the first seventeen picks overall goaccording to plan, who's the guy wan
at eighteen? So I'm assuming BrackBowers is off the board. That would
be a a Bengal fan would bepretty happy to add another weapon of Joe
(00:43):
Burrows arsenal. I think the nextone would be Olafashano, the left tackle
from Penn State who looks like afuture Pro Bowl pass protecting tackle. Could
he play right tackle? Maybe maybedevelop him for a couple of years and
move them over left. When onLando Brown Junior is gone, I expect
he's probably gone. He's fourteenth onthe consensus rankings amongst everyone, all the
analysts in the in the internet world, so there's a chance there, but
(01:07):
you know, expecting to be gone. The next in my opinion are Talifalonga,
the offensive tackle from Oregon State who'sa right tackle by trade. He's
played at his whole career, wouldbe a great fit. Power runner,
per run blocker, can move andget to the second level, can block
linebackers. Can You can pull himon pitches and get him out in space
and block. He's a nasty dude. He's not an eight plus pass protector
(01:30):
like Fashanu is. He's more oflike a D pass protector and an A
plus run defense run blocker. Ithink he'd be a seamless fit and a
transition there. Some teams feel himas a guard, so you could probably
come in and play and start overcourt of Wolston out left guard and give
you five starters. If not,I do think there is a real good
shot for defensive tackle, and theone that everyone seems to be the highest
(01:52):
on is Byron Murphy at the defensivetackle out of Texas playton nose tackle at
Texas. He's more of the bodyof a three tech pass rusher, elite
athlete, high end production. You'regonna have to transition him to more of
an NFL role off the center, but I think you could do a little
bit of it. The Mangos don'thave a nose tackle on the roster.
It would just be weird to havea three hundred and five pounder do play
(02:12):
that role. But he's done itand probably could get on the field right
away doing that, all right,So let's say he's there and they take
him, but they still have toaddress right tackle. It's interesting. When
this process first started, all Iheard about was, boy, it's a
great tackle class. It's really deep. It feels like it's deep with first
rounders. Is it deep with guysthat you could ask to play that position
(02:34):
that you could get on Friday? So most of the really good tackles come
in the first round. It isa position that gets pushed up. Every
team could use one, or atleast half of them are desperately needing one
or a future one, so theyget drafted right away. So if we
see I think the over under rightnow is nine and a half offensive lineman
taken in the first round, andthat's mostly tackles. So if we're saying
(02:54):
seven or eight of those guys aretackles, it doesn't leave a lot for
round so you have to consider thatif you want to go in a different
position in round one, if it'sRock Bouers or wide receiver or a corner,
which could happen, but if thathappens, you're making that decision that
we are rolling the dice in roundtwo. There are a few guys with
incomplete profiles that look like they mayhave the upside and could turn into that.
(03:17):
Whether that's a Patrick Paul out ofHouston, but a career left tackle,
you'd have to transition them and hispet his footwork are a mess anyway,
so you're gonna have to rebuild themas it is. But these are
the type of guys we're talking about. Roger Rosengarten, the right tackle from
Washington, the left tackle Troyce Blatano, who is going to be a first
round pick. Roger rosen Gartner isone of the younger guys in this class,
(03:38):
has the size, has the athleticism, but he's definitely not Fatano,
so you see to step down alittle bit there. But hey, I
think that's a great second round rollof the dice. You've got a bunch
of guys that are probably gonna getdrafted in the first ten picks before they
even get to the Bengals, whetherthat's Kingsley, Sula Mattea out of Buyu,
Jordan Morgan out of Arizona, Idon't think there's gonna be great options.
(03:59):
It's probably like Paul or Rosemungarten, the two guys I mentioned, But
they're gonna need time and they're gonneed some work. But that's what you're
looking at in round two. Thedrop off from Byron Murphy at his position
to everybody else. How's deep?Is it not that crazy? Actually?
I think Johnny Newton is actually abetter prospect, but he didn't test,
he didn't have the hype of thewhole offseason, and we don't know where
(04:23):
he's going to go now. Forwhatever reason, it seems like everyone around
the league has cooled on him frombeing a top twelve pick when the process
started in January to now he's rankedbetween like twenty fifth and thirty fifth on
most of the boards are on theinternet. So if that's where he goes,
and a lot of mocks I justsaw a mel Kuiper and Field Yates
block kind of had the Bengals gettingJohnny Newton at forty nine. If that's
(04:44):
the case, then it was likean eight plus pick. In my opinion,
I think he could be Geno AtkinsGrady Jarrett type of defensive tack line.
I don't throw that comp out,but that's what he creates for us
and all the work we do.But other than that, they'll realistic options
in round two. Whether that's aBraiden sist Got a Florida State who is
twenty four, but he's got theathleticism and the strength and the power that
(05:05):
you look for as a pass rushing, disruptive, pain in the neck type
defensive tackle. The next guy, probably Michael Hall out of Ohio State,
was more just a pass rusher, not very good at run defending, and
those profiles normally say role player, and that's probably okay. The Bengals could
use some more interior pass rush. But if you are looking for guys to
(05:26):
defend the run and maybe get anose tackle, if that's what they really
needed someone to replaced DJ Reader,we're talking Day three picks only for that
position, but pass rushers. Ido like a couple other Brandon Dorles from
Moregan, Chris Jenkins, more ofa run defender but plays the position of
the pass rusher side of the threeTech quar Tech five TECH from Michigan.
I do think there's a lot ofoptions in round two, round three,
(05:47):
but the nose tackle spot if youdon't and we don't know where Tobandre Sweat
is, if you don't get him, if that's the third, four to
fifth round pick, depending on hischaracter issues. We're talking most of these
guys are going to be four throughseventh round draft picks. Joe Goodberry Bengals

Breakdown the latest episode, along witha whole lot of other draft related content.
(06:11):
I haven't heard discussions as heated aroundany other prospect as they are when
brock Bauer's name comes up. Wheredo you fall on just him as a
guy who may or may not fallto eighteen, and then what the Bengals
should do if he were to actuallybe there. Yeah, so I think
he's a tremendous prospect. We're talkingabout athleticism, youth production, big time
(06:36):
program, big time games, checksevery box. He did not test athletically
before the Combine or before the draft, at the Combine or at his pro
day. That is a red flagand his profile, because there are a
few positions where you need to besure that these guys are athletic. Tight
end is one of them. Offensivetackle, defensive end. You want to
(06:57):
make sure those guys are athletic. So while we know we like, I
can see it on tape. Iknow he's athletic, but the test thing
would have been nice to confirm.I suspect he would have tested like an
elite athlete. And he's probably thinkinghe's going to go top twelve no matter
what sweet ends that happens. Havingsaid that, his profile is so strong
otherwise that he should be a topten pick or he's at least a top
(07:17):
ten player in this class without adoubt. But when you take a tight
end in the first round, you'reautomatically not seeing the same type of value
as you would if you took anoffensive tackle or a wide receiver or defensive
tackle, because those top guys atthose positions, at the premium positions,
get paid so much more than thetop tight end does. Like Travis Kelcey
(07:38):
at thirteen million per year, isthe top tight end that is a value
and that may be a bonus forthe Bengals when they get to the second
contract, right, you're not goingto have to pay that guy t Higgins
even level twenty two to twenty fivemillion dollars. So they could see it
as a so what, we don'tcare about the value right now. We're
not worry about it right now.Second contract would be very easy to sign
up rop hours. But do theBengals value tight end the same way the
(08:00):
rest of the league does. Thelast few drafts that told us they don't
there maybe a round or round anda half lower on these guys than they
should be, and they keep missingout and drafting ten ends. Maybe an
overcorrection from when they overdrafted Drew Sampleswhere they're like, WHOA, maybe our
formula might be a little bit offhere, maybe we should slow down.
Well, they might have corrected toofar. I think this one is easy
for them, and I think it'seasy for rest of the league. He's
(08:22):
going to grade extremely high for almostevery team in this in this in the
league, and in the draft, and I expect if he's there, he's
the best player available. It wouldprobably take a top tackle or Byron Murphy
for them to say, you knowwhat, he's not that far and away
the best player here. We've gota top ten grade on Byron Murphy or
a top ten grade on Fuanga orOla Fujiana, and we're going to bypass
(08:45):
brock Powers just like everyone else says, all right, two more uh if
if in an ideal world they're addressingwide receiver before Friday comes and goes,
who's the guy before a right? So first three rounds, let's say here,
it's hard for them because everyone's sayingit's a really really good offensive or
(09:07):
wide receiver class, just like offensivetackle. And I think the way you
said it for a tackle is truefor wide receiver. I think there's a
handful of number ones that will goin the top ten, right the Marvin
Harrison, the Lake Neighbors, andthe Roma Dunze. Those guys are number
one wide receivers. After that, there is a lot of risk in these
profiles going forward. Let's say forthe Bengals, it's different because they have
(09:28):
their number one, they're not worriedabout it. They can get a future
number two type and an immediate numberthree type to fill Tyler Void's role.
I think that makes a lot ofsense. That opens up a lot more
players for them. But if you'rea team like the Bills, and you
need a number one now because youtraded aways to find Diggs, you are
in big trouble. And I couldsee them being a team that moves up
and goes and try and get oneof these top guys. But for the
(09:48):
Bengals, they have always drafted receiververy well, but because they've been very
strict in what type of wide receiverprospects they're willing to draft and going back
since two thousand and three, Ikeep a database on all this stuff to
look at what are they normally draft, where they normally looking for, what
are the markers and for wide receiver, they like young production guys that were
(10:11):
big parts of their offense at eighteennineteen, twenty years old, and the
COVID year messed us all up.So these guys are now making impacts at
twenty one, twenty two, comingout in the draft in twenty three,
twenty four years old, and itmesses all of what I would normally say
they would draft because last year,Charlie Jones andre j Oshabash were late breakouts.
(10:31):
Charlie Jones was twenty five year oldrookie was a one percent that one
percentile breakout age, meaning he didn'tstart doing it until he was twenty three
in college. It's very rare andvery weird, and the Bengals drafted him.
This is not what they normally do. So I think if they get
to round two, round three, the guys that would normally fit their old
profile and not what they did lastyear, the guys like Troy Franklin,
(10:52):
Kean Coleman. I think in roundsthree it could be Jalen McMillan, it
could be Brendan Rice. Of thatthough, I think if they try to
dip outside of it and go forthese older prospects, which I'm not sure
they'll do, we'll see if theydo. They usually go outside their realm
of normalcy on Day three, likethey did with Charlie Johns Andrio Shubas.
(11:13):
If they do it, it'll beodd to me. So I think those
four guys I named are the mostlikely for day two. Yeah, that
was very well explained. One more, I want you to go back two
years ago because I'm I think Dag'shill and his role on the team and
what unfolds in the coming months isreally really interesting. Right now, he's
kind of a man without a role, and understandably because his play at safety
(11:37):
last year, it left a lotto be desired. When you were evaluating
him in the run up to thedraft two years ago, where did you
project him best fitting in the NFL? So he was in my opinion,
and what he played at Michigan inmy opinion, coincide here. So he
was a slot box safety. Soyou can have a and these are guys
that throughout the league have been emergingmore and more, whether it was Tyrone
(12:01):
Matthew right, he was a slotkind of box strong safety or a Buddha
Baker or a Jimmy Ward who wasa first round pick, Kyle Hamilton,
same exact draft for the for theRavens, he was a slot box safety
where if he would have if theBengals would have been lucky enough to get
Kyle Hamilton, would they have thenext year said hey, we lost Jesse
Bates, let's make Kyle Hamilton abring safety because we need it. Like,
(12:22):
think about how bad you would haveruined an all Pro career if you
had done that. They basically didthat with Dax Hill. They said to
dakx Dax, we're not going toplay you much in your rookie year unless
someone goes down and hey, itentered, you know, cornerbacks, hopefully
cornerback for a day. Other thanthat, we're going to move you to
free safety in year two and notgive you much veteran safety help. We're
gonna go cheap with Nick Scott andoh that didn't work. So now DA's
(12:46):
because the whole defense looked terrible lastyear, We're now going to move you
to corner And that's what it seemslike it has happened. It's what I've
heard has happened. He's gonna bein the cornerback room this year. They've
replaced them with Gino Stone. Theywere ended up able to fall and get
bond for freeback. Okay, sothe safety room is better, but you've
now wasted two years of decks shouldhave been playing the Mike Hilton role.
(13:09):
So why did you draft him?If you had Mike Hilton, then you
had him signed for three more years. If the whole room wasn't in unison,
the vision from personnel down to thecoaches that this is what he is
in college and this is what heshould play in the NFL. And you
guys alo collectively thought no, let'smove in the free safety. Then you
should have given him more time andmore development and more effort to make sure
(13:31):
he's that player. Otherwise you havefailed as an organization to have a concrete
plan and execute it. Number oneand number two, you burn him the
first round pick in an era whereyou can't afford to do it. They've
really fumbled a bag here, Mo. Yeah, No, it certainly feels
that way. I feel for him. I'm interested in how this is going
(13:52):
to play itself out, and perhapswhat happens next week is going to go
a long way toward determining how itdoes play out. I always feel so
much smarter when I watch, whenI listen and want to have you on.
I cannot thank you enough. Ihope we can do it before the
season starts. Man, thank youso much. Thanks for having me.
