Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome back the Moegger Radio Show ESPN fifteen thirty. But no,
mo Moe's not here. I'm Austin Elmore And a man
who typically appears on this program on Wednesdays during basketball
season is one Rick Browing. And Rick joins us now
(00:25):
even though it's not technically basketball season, but maybe it
is postseason basketball still being played, and the Muskies have
a new head coach. He's the Reverend Rick Bring joining
us now. Hi, Rick, how are you?
Speaker 2 (00:38):
What's going on? Audie?
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Well? I just wanted to talk a little bit of
hoops first and foremost. Have we gotten any clarity? Are
we allowed to call Richard Patino Dick Patino just so
it rhymes with Rick.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
I did not broach that subject at the press conference yesterday.
That was not on the priority list during the few
questions that we were able to get in there. But
you know, maybe we'll circle back, as they said, all right,
thank you.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
Yeah, if we could get some clarity on that before
the start of the season, that'd be great. Your biggest
takeaway from the press conference yesterday was what.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
I think that this is going to be different. It
felt new, It felt like a different voice, a different
way of doing things already. Richard Patino's style of speaking
and just his manner of a dressing the media was
different from what we've been used to with Sean Miller,
even the coaches before him at Xavier, and I think
Greg Christopher made it a point to acknowledge that during
(01:37):
his closing remarks before he brought Richard Patino on stage
during the press conference, he said that, you know, families expand,
and that's what today is. Xavier's family is expanding, And
I think that was to acknowledge that they are going
outside the family, which is not what they typically do
when they hire coaches. But things are different this time around,
(01:58):
and this was a bold decision by Greg Christopher and
the administration at Xavier, and if nothing else, I think
they should be applauded for that. You can argue whether
or not it was the right decision or if it's
going to work out well for them, but I think
it would have been easy to bring Chris Mack back,
and they decided to do something that maybe wasn't as easy,
and it felt because they felt like it was the
(02:18):
right decision. So I'm certain I think that's at least
an admirable thing to do.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
I know, it's old news and a mood point at
this point, but how surprised were you that it wasn't
Chris Mack.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
It was surprising at the time because there were so
many people that really felt it was going to be Chris.
And I don't just mean like you know, Joe from
Cheviot around the city. I mean like people that know
what's going on at Xavier felt very strongly that Chris
Mack was going to be the guy, or at least
was the leading candidate going into Tuesday night when everything
(02:53):
kind of unfolded, and you know, low of behold great
Christopher did a great job of keeping it tight lit
as he went out to New Mexico and got the
deal done with Richard Patino and then ultimately let Chris
Mack know. And then we got that tweet from Chris
Mack saying that he was staying at Charleston. I mean,
it was really a whirlwind evening and and once it
(03:14):
wasn't Chris Mack, we felt pretty good about the information
we had that it was going to be Richard Patino,
and that was shortly reported an hour or so later.
But yeah, the fact that it wasn't Chris Mack on
Tuesday Night. At least the way it happened so quickly
at that point was definitely shocking.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
You mentioned expanding the family. Why in this case is
it the right thing and how is that going to
benefit Xavier by expanding to Patino.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Well, I don't know that we can say it is
right like that. They're trying it, they're hoping it is
in their mind it's the right thing to do, and
I think the reason for that is, well, let's face it,
Xavier hasn't quite been does Xavier that we started to
know over the last thirty or however many years where
it got to a point where you almost expected Xavier
to be in the second weekend of the NSAA tournament
(04:03):
and that was becoming the standard. And I don't know
if that's fair or unfair, but I do know that
missing five of the last seven NCAA tournaments certainly isn't
what they're shooting for. I know that last year's season
isn't what they're going for. So I think there maybe
is the argument to be made that things had run
its course with that coaching tree and that way of
(04:23):
doing things. That's not that it wasn't extremely successful for
Xavier over the last twenty one years, if you're talking
about Sean Miller, Chris Mack, Travis Steel back to Sean Miller,
all those guys kind of doing things a very similar way.
It was very successful, and it led Xavier into the
Big East and they had a number one seed, a
number two seed, some of the best seasons in Xavier history.
(04:44):
Without a doubt, they they did great things. But at
this point, over the last several years, it just hadn't
quite been the same. They tried to recapture that magic
bringing Sean Miller back, and it still really wasn't the same.
And so at that point, I think it's reasonable to
assess the situation and say, maybe it's time for a
breath of fresh air.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
When it comes to the x's and o's, the actual
basketball is a or what does a Richard Patino led
team look like on the.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Floor on the offensive end, I think you're going to
see something that's very similar to Sean Miller. In fact,
Richard talked about that yesterday during his time with the media,
saying that he and Shawn had actually shared notes and
talked about the way that they wanted to revolutionize their offense.
He made a change when he went from Minnesota to
New Mexico, playing a more uptempo style, the same way
(05:34):
Sean Miller did after he sat out following his stint
at Arizona, then came back to Xavier, he went with
a much faster system on the offensive end. Both of
them took their style basically from Gonzaga, and so I
think what Dager's been doing the last three years offensively
is going to look very similar to what they're going
to do under Richard Patino. Now on the defensive side,
(05:55):
it's a completely different story. For twenty one years, Xavier
has been a pack lined defensive team, which means you
pressure on the ball and then everybody else is in
a help position, playing in the gaps, and you try
to stay in good position. You try to contain the
ball as much as possible, and you try to be
a very good defensive rebounding team. Richard Patino said multiple
times yesterday he wants disruption, he wants to get steals,
(06:19):
he wants to swarm the ball, he wants to block
shots and have rim protectors. It's going to be a
very different style of playing basketball. They're going to be
denying passing lanes, they're going to be pressuring all over
in the half court, and so I think that's going
to be the biggest notable change on the court that
fans will recognize.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
He mentioned that he doesn't have a lot of players
right now. If you're Richard Patino, where do you start
when it comes to trying to build this roster? How
do you make this work?
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Well, I mean everyone's kind of dealing with that same thing. Like,
if you're a new coach, you have to build an
entirely new roster. Now, it seems like in most cases,
but even if you're an established coach who's been at
your program, I mean, you might be having to deal
with something pretty similar. It might not be twelve or
thirteen players, but you might be having to find seven
or eight new ones all the same. So, I think
(07:09):
everyone's kind of dealing with a year to year roster rebuild,
and that's going to be even tougher for Richard Patino
in this year's Xavior staff as they tried to do
it on the fly, as they're getting to know new
people and doing a lot of other requirements that come
with the job. They did land a transfer from New
Mexico who came over he committed last night. He's a
(07:30):
six to nine face up forward as kind of a
versatile defender. Started a lot of games for them last year,
but didn't have a huge impact on their team, only
averaged about five points per game. So I would imagine
he's more of a role guy, a guy that's gonna
potentially play some off of the bench. But it's going
to be a lot of news turning over quickly here.
(07:50):
We'll have it all covered at musketeerreport dot com over
the next few weeks.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
In college sports these days, with football and basketball specifically,
there's a lot of people being high hired as general managers.
We just saw the Bearcats do it. We know Andrew Luck,
for example, is the GM at Stanford. Do you expect
something like that for Xavier? Are there any plans like
that for them to hire a GM and or a
role like that.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
It's all the rage to talk about that. I know
fans want to say our team is doing it because
they're afraid other teams are doing it and they might
be gaining a competitive advantage by that happening. I know
it's something that has been talked about. It's talked about before.
Sean Miller left, and Richard Patino said yesterday when we
asked him point blank about it, that it was something
he was open to. But one thing that I think
(08:35):
we have to consider when we're talking about hiring general
managers in an era where you're also paying your players
and you're at a place like Xavier with good but
still limited resources, can you really afford to pay a
high level general manager who's actually going to be worth it?
I mean, a professional type of guy that's running your
roster and finding you players and being a shark when
(08:57):
it comes to getting the deals done. Are you really
going to be able to afford someone who's shrewd and
good enough to do that to provide value to you
when you're also supposed to pay your players, or is
that money going to be better spent just paying another
power forward or point guard or shooting guard, or paying
a higher level guide than the ones you've got. I'm
not convinced right now. It seems like a lot of
(09:19):
these general manager roles that people are getting are more
media flexus than anything else. It's an NBA player like
Steph Curry helping out by sharing his name with Davidson
so they can use it in a GM role. I
think Trey Young did a similar thing with Oklahoma. I'm
not sure that I've seen a lot of high level
real gms come back to the college level and are
(09:42):
expected to make a huge difference there.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
His name is Rick Brooring covers the Muskies Musketeer Report
dot com, also the color analysts for NKU basketball. Has
there been any NKU news anything going on in the
portal with the Norse that we need to know about?
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Rick? Yeah, huge, huge news this week. I believed yesterday
dan Gerrezker, who if you paid attention to MKU this year,
at the end of the year, caught fire, averaged over
sixteen points per game, was shooting over forty percent from
three point range of the final like ten plus games
of the season. He announced he had gotten into the
portal last week, and then he announced that he is
(10:19):
staying with NKU. He hit back out of the portal
and recommitted to NKU. That is a great sign if
you're an MKU fan.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
Absolutely, And finally, Rick, I know you got a busy
day coming up, and thank you for your time, But
I also know that you were a college basketball you know, deviant.
Have you watched the Crown and if so, what do
you think.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Well, unfortunately, I was a little bit busy yesterday when
the other local team in town.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
I wasn't asking about them. I was just you know
the other there were other games.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Well yeah, but I typically like to follow the local
teams and zagerhead the press conference at the same time,
so I wasn't able to catch it. But I saw
if they want, I'm looking forward to following the rest
of the tournament seeing how they do. So I don't
have much a response for you yet. I haven't watched it,
but I hear it's great. I mean, it could be
better than basketball and vegans.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
Do you think that it was intentional for the press
conference start at the same time that the other team
was tipping off?
Speaker 2 (11:17):
I don't know where would you get that idea. Do
you think that those teams are petty like that those
university I don't know.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Oh, man, I hope it is. I hope it's true.
I hope that's what it's all about. Rick, Thank you,
Thank you, Rick Brooring, Musketeer Report dot Com, NKU Radio
as well. Good stuff there, and hopefully good time's coming
for the Muskies. Yeah, the Bearcats one of those teams
that just hired a general manager. We talked about that
on SINCY three to sixty. Corey Evans, the former Oklahoma
(11:46):
City Scout, got a lot of great reviews from people
across college basketball in terms of the Bearcats hiring him.
So I'm really curious about stuff like that. And Rick
mentioned it. Steph Curry has attached his name to day Davidson.
Trey Young, the star guard from the Atlanta Hawks. Is
I think he made a million dollar donation to Oklahoma
(12:06):
Basketball and is in some way, shape or form consulting them.
So really interesting stuff in terms of how rosters are
now going to be built, constructed, pursued, paid, et cetera
in GM rolls across college sports. We'll take a break.
We'll be back. This is The Moegger Show on ESPN fifteen.
