(00:00):
Or this is ESPN fifteen thirty. My name is Malwager. Thrilled that you
are with us today. Brendanman andJones on baseball coming up in thirty minutes.
Mike Renner has joined us every yearfor years and spent years with Pro
Football Focus. I think the bestdraft conversation we ever had was when my
man was just trying to relax atthe Holy Grail AFT opening Day and I

(00:21):
kept peppering him with bad draft questionsand I thought I would do it.
Now. He is a part ofthe Bleach Report Draft Show. He is
on Twitter at Mike Renner Underscore, and he's with us. Now. What's
going on? No, how's itgoing? Thanks for having me back on.
It's good to have you. Iseverything okay? Yes, I've moved
out since that and I'm on CentralTime now and it screws me up every

(00:42):
time I try to schedule stuff.I understand. Well, I always appreciate
it when you come on. Iknow you do a lot of these and
to get you the day before thedraft is is pretty cool. I want
to go back to something that youput on Twitter, A lot of smart
stuff. There are a lot offolks here hoping that by Murphy is there
at eighteen. You put out thatyou think he is the best defensive player

(01:03):
in the draft. We could wonderand debate whether or not he's going to
be there at eighteen, but puthim on tape for me, what makes
him the best defensive player in thedraft. He is. It's just tough.
He reds a lot geno achadecture, and then when he wants to go
somewhere, it's difficult to stop himgoing there. Like you can see it
in a straight line, linear explosion. He's off the charge. I mean,

(01:26):
at his size, running in thefour eighth over three hundred pounds is
pretty absurd. And you watch himon tape, especially go back to the
end of last season. You know, because he's a young guy coming out
only a junior plast six games,he just was living in backfield. So
that combination of explosiveness with that sortof stout, lower, shorter body type,

(01:47):
it's just difficult for off the linemanto releverage an anchor against. And
yeah, I don't know if hemakes it to eighteen, but if the
Bengals are feeling a little frisky, they can move up and go get his
talent somewhere maybe in the early teams. Yeah, I think there's some to
that. The drop off from himto the rest of the players at that
position, how steep is it.I don't think it's that steep. To

(02:07):
Johnny Newton, I think he isa darn good player. I think there's
different types of players though, LikeMurphy is definitely more the versatile guy.
Can play the nose, can playyou know, three tech. He can
play all those Newton's of three techleLike he is a nobby, versatile dude.
But in that role, I thinkhe's gonna excel in the NFL.
But so for the Bengals specifically withwhat they call the defensive line, with

(02:28):
the versatility they like, I thinkit's a pretty big drop off for them.
So they would probably be getting anantcythere at eighteen. So want to
get a guy like that. Ifif Byron Murphy is gone and I'm hoping
to sift through a couple of differenttackle options offensive tackle options at eighteen,
who's the guy that I should behoping is there? I think you're hoping
for Olu Fashin. I mean,if you want pass protection in this year's

(02:51):
drafts, he may be very wellbe end up being the best one,
and I was working the running gameleave something to be desired. I think
you could see him passed up bysome bigger, stronger, better run game
tackles in this draft class, becausethat's kind of the teams in front of
them that need those tackles are teamsthat are more power run game oriented.
So obviously you have the two tacklesfor this year, but not necessarily long

(03:12):
term. And to me, Fashnuis the guy that's I think he's just
the sure thing and pass protection basedoff of what I saw a tape,
So that's the dream from what I'veheard in those tackles are going early,
so there may not be there maybe like six off the board by the
time the Bengals are on the clockat eight. Team is the class of
that position so deep that if Iget one on Friday, I can feel
good about that guy having to possiblyplay this year. I do think so.

(03:38):
Honestly, I think there are guysthat will go date two and obviously
any offensive tackle you don't feel greatabout starting as a rookie. It's just
the traft record that position. ButI think there's tackles that you could feel
like you could start at guard orcenter as a rookie and not miss a
beat. So it's a really reallydeep off of the line class. They
have both tackle and on the interior. So yet I wouldn't recommend necessarily wait

(04:00):
on tackle, but it's definitely aposition you can find on Day two this
year in a unique manner. Now, Mike Renner is with us on Twitter
x at at Mike Renner underscore thewide receiver position. They're taking one.
I don't know if it's if it'sgonna happen tomorrow night, but they're taking
one before we get to midnight onFriday. Day two options of that position

(04:20):
that would make most sense for whatthe Bengals have now and what they're gonna
need later. Who is it?Yeah, so day two I think to
replace Tyler Boyd. There's a lotof guys I like in this draft class.
The two probably the most that Ilove in this class that could do
that is key On Coleman's from FloridaState and jay On Colt from Washington.
They're both bigger body slot receivers, great ball skills, though super savvy over

(04:44):
the middle of the field, likeexactly what you want to pair with Joe
Burrow because guys who you know, even when they're not necessarily open, can
still make plays when Joe Burrow giveshim a chance. So it's a great
class to need that hype a widereceiver. So if you're trying to replace
t Higgins long term, I'm notnecessarily sure there's going to be that guy
around, but I definitely think youcan find a Boyd replacement. There are
lots of folks listening to this conversationwho are hoping, perhaps against hope,

(05:08):
that brock Bauers is there at eighteen. And then you'll find some folks who
would say, even if he isthere, you don't take a tight end
in round one. What say youabout brock Bowers. I think he's the
highest floor sid end prospect I've seenthe past decade. He's just if you
just call them wide receiver. Andlike I go back to his freshman year
at Georgia when they had ad NaMitchell on that roster, they had Tremaine

(05:30):
Burton on that roster, they hadLad McConkie, three guys who will be
top set by picking this year draft. He had like four hundred more yards
and all of those guys. Ifhe was the number one option, that's
the true freshman on a national championhipteam. So he's darn good. You
can call him whatever you want. He's going to produce at a high level,
and he would be perfect for whatkind of what the Bangles need,
Like he could replace Tyler Boyd foryou in that offense and it wouldn't miss

(05:51):
a beat. So yeah, it'sa pipe dream at eighteen. But again,
so the two guys they really wantit would I'm just in my opinion,
Murphy and him, you're probably gonnahave to go up for. But
I think they're both worth going upand trying to take that shot at with
what they need on that roster.I know you have a lot going on.
I know you get asked to doa lot of these. I have
sought to go find them because it'snot quite as easy to find your work

(06:13):
as it used to be. Ihope that changes soon. I appreciate you
coming on man, thanks so muchfor sure, Thanks for me. I
have to do it anytime. Yougot it the great Mike Renner. He
is also going to be a partof the Bleacher Report NFL Draft Show.
Follow him on x at Mike Rennerunderscore Pro Football Focus was stupid for letting
him go. It's twenty eight minutesafter four o'clock. We have a college
