(00:00):
The University of Cincinnati is wrapping upits first year as a Big twelve institution
and has claimed its first Big twelvetitle. It's an individual men's golf championship
one over the weekend by Tom Gingrich, who is going to compete in the
NCAA Purdue Regional May thirteen through fifteen, so just about two weeks from now.

(00:22):
This is going to be at theBurke Boilermaker Golf Complex. So a
bit of a homecoming for a tiewho is from that area and who has
Purdue ties, but makes history asthe first, the first of what is
hopefully many Big twelve champions at theUniversity of Cincinnati. He wins an individual
men's golf championship after an unbelievable performanceat Whispering Pines in Trinity, Texas,

(00:46):
shooting a nine under two seventy nineand kind enough to give us a few
minutes this afternoon. Toy, congratulations, thank you for joining us. How
are you well? Thank you verymuch. I'm doing it. How are
you mo doing wonderful? So youfind out today where you're going to play.
You're from the Purdue area, youryour dad played baseball at Purdue.
Your brother is on the baseball teamnow, and so not only do you

(01:07):
get a chance to compete in theNCAA Regionals, to get a chance to
do it close to home. That'spretty cool. Yeah, it's it's awesome.
It's kind of a dream deal forme. I mean it's an hour
from my house. And like yousaid, I mean I've had, you
know, a bunch of family goto Purdue and my sister graduated from Purdue,
and so it's, uh, yeah, it's it's pretty awesome when when

(01:29):
you're playing at a high stakes eventlike this and and there's an individual championship
and a birth as an individual inthe NCUBA Regionals up for grabs. I
get nervous on the on the driving, on the practice team, I get
I get nervous tea and off onlike four with my buddies on a on
a Saturday when we're drinking beer. How did you handle all that pressure?
Uh? One shot at a time, just you know, kind of goes

(01:52):
back to all the practice and preparationthat I've been you know, putting the
end for a long time now,and you know, really just trying not
to think too much about it,because yeah, there is a lot of
pressure, but you know, justonce at at a time and and uh
just kind of do what I domentality. So so you put your score
on the card and then had towait for the rest of the field to

(02:13):
wrap things up. What was thatweight like? Uh? Pretty nerve racking.
Yeah. I came into the clubhouseand they had the ESPN coverage up
on the TV, so I wasjust watching and you know, hoping that
nobody would would catch me or passme. But uh, yeah, it
was. It was definitely nerve nerveracking for sure. Uh, you go

(02:36):
from a year where you had somerounds that weren't your best to peaking at
precisely the right time. What wasthe key to that? I think just
trusting that, you know, mygood stuff is really good, obviously good
enough to win the Big ten orBig twelve individual title. And yeah,
just having a lot of trust andpatience that good golf was on the was

(03:00):
on the way and it came atthe right time. We've watched over the
course of the season every sport makethe jump or make the progression from the
American Athletic Conference to the Big twelve. What has that been like from a
golf perspective? A little different? We had the Big Twelve match play in
the fall, which was a newtournament for US and on our schedule,

(03:21):
and then obviously the Big Twelve ConferenceChampionship is pretty elite and really strong.
But besides that, nothing really changedfrom our schedule or we see you know,
we saw a lot of the sameteams this year that we did when
we were in the American UH,walk me through how the NCAA tournament works.

(03:43):
So basically, there's six different regionals. There's gonna be top five teams
advance out of the regional, andthen the low individual score whose team didn't
advance or the people playing individually,UH is gonna go. So only one
guy who's either team didn't advance orwas it playing as an individual will go

(04:06):
on to nationals. Describe for methe life like a day in the life
when on days you're not competing. What is the day in the life of
a college golfer? What is theweek in the life of a college golfer?
Like, UH, we have workoutstypically three times a week, and
then that's in the morning and thenkind of have practice either kind of mid

(04:31):
morning to early afternoon or all afternoon, and then a little bit of studying,
I guess in the evening. Butit's a it's a it's a good
life for sure. We just weplay a lot of golf and and have
a lot of fun. I wouldsay, yeah, it sort of sounds
like my my dream college scenario.Do you how often do you play?
I mean, you obviously played competitivelyand you play for for high stakes.

(04:55):
How how often do you go playrecreationally and when you're just like random people
playing golf? What's that like?Uh? Not often, I think,
you know. If I'm going tothe golf course, it's to it's it's
to practice and try to get mycompetitive game better. But I mean,
every once in a while I'll goout with some buddies and go have fun.
But it's kind of hard to havefun because my expectations are so high

(05:18):
out there. Yeah, and thenyou have your friends asking you for tips
and stuff, right exactly? Yeah, exactly? Does that get annoying?
Uh No, because I like tohelp my friends out. But yes,
because at the same time I'm tryingto figure out this game as well.
So yeah, uh and then youobviously and then correct me if I'm wrong.

(05:39):
You've just you've just graduated too correctthat's right, all right, So
you're you're gonna leave the university asa Big twelve champion and we'll see you
see how you do in the NCAAtournament. What's what's next. I'm gonna
be turning pro at some point, either this summer or this fall. I
haven't really decided that yet, kindof waiting to see how everything shakes out

(06:00):
with the rest of my college career. But yeah, the next step is
to turn pro for me, allright, So turning pro, that sounds
awesome. I know there's a lotthat goes into it. Describe Describe what
the coming weeks and months are goingto be like once you turn professional.
Just a lot of grinding and hopefullyplaying some good golf and kind of see

(06:25):
where that takes me. It's kindof tough because there's so many different ways
to do it, and like, yeah, you just you just gotta play
good golf no matter what you're playingin I guess, and just kind of
see where that takes you. Butyeah, it's a program. Last year,
following them, following you guys asa team in the NCAA tournament.

(06:46):
Walk me through the decision to playgolf at the university of Cincinnati. Well,
cool story about that. So thefirst time that Doug or coach Martin
ever watched me play in high schoolwas at the camp and golf course,
which is where I'll be playing myregional. So he watched me there.

(07:08):
I was playing a junior tournament there, and then we kind of just started
talking over a period of a fewmonths, and I just kind of fell
in love with the school and andcoach Martin and coach for Rick and the
program here, and I just reallyfelt like this is a place I was
going to get better at and learna lot, and that certainly happened.
So, yeah, that's awesome.Well, we were gonna be rooting for

(07:30):
you. How many rounds will youget in between now in the regionals starting
May thirteenth. Well, I canonly play one round at that golf course.
Okay, I'll be Yeah, I'llbe doing some practicing here in Cinci
and and at home a little bitas well, and so i'll be I'll
be ready to go. All right, Well, we're going to be rooting
for you, not just in theNCAA regionals, but your professional career,

(07:55):
which which hopefully for your standpoint fromour standpoint, gets delayed a little while
because I want you to keep advancing. But congratulations, you made history,
the first ever Big twelve champion inu SEE history. It is awesome and
have a great time playing close tohome in the NCAA regionals. Tye,
I appreciate the time, man, thanks so much, Thanks very much,

(08:16):
Mo, you got it. TyGingrich is the first ever Big twelve champion
at the University of Cincinnati. Willplay in the Purdue Regional of the NCAA
Tournament starting on May the thirteenth.
