Speaker 1 (00:00):
What was not week was last night Kevin DENK's goal.
FC Cincinnati goes to Toronto and wins, and it sets
up on Saturday. What's going to be a really fun
atmosphere It always is for the Hell is Real matchup.
F C Cincinnati on the road against Columbus, a big
game in the Eastern Conference. FC Cincinnati coming in off
a win, getting three points last night in Toronto, getting
(00:20):
set to take on their arch rival. The game is
on MLS Season Pass Apple TV, and Keith Costigan has
the call and kind enough to join this this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Keith, it's good, It's good to have you. How are you.
I'm good, I'm good.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
I'm excited to call what's fast becoming the most heated
rivalry in Major League Soccer.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
So come, wait to get there this weekend.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
I know you guys have a couple of big name
players will be playing in their first hell Israel, and
I think it's going to be a really electric game
this weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
I was thinking about that last night watching Kevin Danke
that the fun part of a rivalry is to see
new players on both sides get their first taste of it.
And so what is already a big deal on Saturday,
to me is even bigger.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
And you know when you score a goal for your team,
when you sign for a new team, goals matter. But
when you score a goal or you have a magic
moment against your biggest rival, that lives forever because fans
talk about the rivalry games long after they're done. So
for den K, for an Evander, these are the big moments.
That's where you bring them in to take on your rivals.
And look, again, we talked about rivalries, can they live
(01:23):
up to billing? The fact that Cincinnati and Columbus Crew
are so high in the standings.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
They're both challengers every year over the.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Last couple of seasons, just adds the extra ingredients that
makes this the most explosive game of the weekend for me.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Can't wait to watch.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
I think Columbus probably get a little bit more love
than Cincinnati in the national media, if I'm being completely honest.
So if I'm Cincinnati, I'm using that as well as
fuel to fire the flames ahead of this weekend's match.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Why is Columbus getting more love?
Speaker 2 (01:56):
I don't you know what.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
I don't know whether it's maybe considered a more sexy
way of playing and the style of play, having more possession.
I think that enamors a lot of the national media.
Cincinnati are quietly going about their business, but then again,
you look at that final third and they brought in
two of the most explosive, most exciting players in Major
(02:19):
League soccer. Maybe this is just my opinion. I don't
know whether you feel that way. I just feel Columbus
get a little bit more love. It goes a little
bit further. That's not to say Cincinnati aren't as good,
but if I'm Cincinnati, I definitely play into that as
I go into the rivalry game this weekend.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Yeah, and you know, f C Cincinnati could have done
something about that in the Eastern Conference Final two years
ago and let that game get away. And so I
think you're right about that when I look at f
C Cincinnati. What we have talked about a ton here
is how Pat Noonan has figured out a way to
get results, to get points while dealing with a lot
of stuff on the fly. Turnover from last year, the
(02:55):
Lujo Acosta situation, new additions to the team, hectic travel schedule, early,
the players missing time because of injury. They've had a
lot players missing time because of commitments to national teams
and yet they there. They are atop the Eastern Conference
and that's great. But I think last night was an
illustration of what everybody's concern is. They scored a goal
and then kind of stopped and had to rely on
(03:16):
their defense, and I just wonder how sustainable that is.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Yeah, I would look at it different way. You look
at last night Columbus Crew. They played against Montreal. They
got held in that game. Montreal havn't had a good season.
I think the game before the rivalry game is a
trap game because I don't care what every manager and
every player will tend you.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
We're only focused on the next game that we're playing.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yeah, easier said than done, because everyone's looking towards Hell
is real. So the fact that you went away difficult
place and got a result and on picked up the
win is a positive moving on to the weekend. And
I think when you talk about championship level teams, we
all want to have the explosive wins.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
We all want to talk about the three four nails.
All look at the football that we played.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
But in the moments when not everything is clicking in gear,
do you have the grit to make sure that you
can still get the result even when not everything is
firing going forward, and that's what for me, separates Cincinnati
from some of the other challengers. For MLS. Cook, what
I've seen this year votes really well. I think when
we're talking about what we call the business end of
(04:20):
the season, it's very hard enough to see FC Cincinnati
in the mix there because they have all of the
elements that create a championship team.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Two weeks ago, if you consider the possibility you'd be
calling FC Cincinnati versus Columbus, did you consider the possibility
you'd be calling a match with Kai Kamara in it?
Speaker 2 (04:40):
No?
Speaker 3 (04:40):
You know, I'm really good friends with Kai Kamara. We've
known each other twenty years. So I'm always messaging him
and I'm like, come on, what's going on, where's the
next team? Where are you going to be playing? And
he's kept it quiet, he didn't let me know. And
then the announcement came and I texted him. I says,
you know, I'm calling the Cincinnati Columbus game, and he said,
I'll see you there.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
So I'm excited to see him.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
I think, Look, I had the benefit of calling a
lot of LAFC games last year and what he brought
to the group was outstanding.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
He is a winner in terms of his work rate.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
If you're a young player and you look at this
guy and he's forty, he's actually older than my co
commentator Mo due Alice. He's MO, I'm like, why is
he still out there and you're not still out there.
He's a model in terms of everything that he does
keeping himself fit, being ready.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
But forget about the age.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
When you watch him out there and you're like, this
guy can still contribute on the field. I think this
is a master stroke pick up, particularly coming into the
summer games where you have a lot going on.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
I love it.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
I'm excited to see Kay. He better have a jersey
for me this weekend because I want one. But I
think it's a great meal from part of him.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
You know, he got in the match last night and
you know he didn't look like he was forty years old.
I'll say that. So I'm excited to see what impact
he can make on this team as he further integrates
himself with his new teammates.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Yeah, and I think what he brings to the locker
room through he's a leader.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Some people when he was in his younger days would
say why he's a strong personality, and I always thought
that was like silly.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
They almost said it like it was a negative, and
I said, well, if.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
You're a big personality coach, you can handle strong personalities
and opinions and feedback.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
That's exactly what Poten Noonon is. He knew exactly what
he was doing.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
He went after Kai and he's just another piece in
what I think FC Cincinnati feel is a championship puzzle
being put together right now.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Hope.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
So Saturday, FC Cincinnati at Columbus, second of three consecutive
road matches for the Orange and Blue. It starts at
seven to fifteen. Potential for a big six point swing
atop the Eastern Conference. Keith have a great call on Saturday.
