Speaker 4 (00:08):
All right, that's us. What's up? Good afternoon on moegar.

Speaker 5 (00:11):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank you for listening. Hooever
happened like the greatest day of all time? Show rundowns
available on Twitter at moegar.

Speaker 4 (00:25):
Thanks to Emory Federal Credit.

Speaker 6 (00:35):
Do that.

Speaker 4 (00:36):
Do that now?

Speaker 5 (00:37):
We are paying attention to a couple of different things.
Reds are playing right now get Away Day in Pittsburgh
after getting shut out last night. They are playing the
Pirates in the series finale, with the series on the line,
Cincinnati getting set to come to the plate for the
top of the ninth inning needing a rally. Pittsburgh leads
this ballgame three to one. Cincinnati got a pretty good

(01:00):
start today from Brady Singer. Although he wasn't great at
not giving up base runners, he was good at minimizing
the damage. He also got some defensive help. Graham Ashcraft
has just given up a run in the eighth inning
to provide the Pirates with some insurance. As the Reds
have done often this year, they have taken a pitcher
who's probably not very good and made him look like

(01:21):
he's better than he is. Andrew Heaney the guy today
and three Pittsburgh relievers have since been terrific. Red's trailing
three to one, will up to date. We'll keep you
up to date with that ballgame as the afternoon unfolds
and give you an instant reaction from Pittsburgh. Reds came
in having won four straight. They won on Monday, lost yesterday.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
It would be.

Speaker 5 (01:45):
It would be disappointing to lose another series to a
really bad team. I know there were a lot of
good vibes around what happened against the Guardians this weekend,
but they just lost two out of three to the
Chicago White Sox, who are terrible. They are three outs
away from losing two out of three to the Pittsburgh Pirates,
who are also terrible. Those things happen during the course
of a season. They cannot happen to a team that

(02:08):
has the small margin for error the Reds due lots
of red stuff to get to throughout the course of
the afternoon. We're also watching the Big Twelve Tournament. Cincinnati
is taking on Texas Tech today. Now there's a decent
chance you don't follow college baseball closely, but there's actually
college baseball bracketology, just like we obsess over with college basketball,

(02:32):
and most bracket projections that I have paid attention to
have Cincinnati in the field. Bearcats could certainly use a
win to solidify their resume today in the Big Twelve Tournament.
They are playing in the top of the fourth inning.
Cincinnati is the home team in this eight versus nine
seed game, and right now the Bearcats have a four
to one lead over Texas Tech. Cincinnati would advance if

(02:55):
they win this game, and there's a lot of ball
to go to take on the top seeded West Virginia Mountaineer.
So Cincinnati trying to solidify its case to make the
NCAA Tournament for the first time as a member of
the Big Twelve.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
There's also the Big East Tournament.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
Most of the bracket projections I have seen have the
Xavier Musketeers as a quintessential bubble team.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
One of the SEC.

Speaker 5 (03:19):
Papers SEC papers or papers in SEC territory cover college
baseball pretty extensively, and one that I saw this afternoon
had the Musketeers being among the last four out. Xavier
plays Prasco Park in the Big East Tournament. That is
a double elimination event. And by the way, if you
haven't been to Prasco Park for the Biggiest Tournament, it's

(03:40):
a fun night out. Xavier takes on Yukon tonight, and
the Musketeers, it goes without saying, could definitely use a
win to boost their tournament chances as well. So we've
got all this going on baseball with the Reds and Pirates,
baseball with Cincinnati versus the Red Raiders and Xavier versus
Yukon tonight. So we have all of that. We've got

(04:03):
a few Bengals issues we've got to talk about today
because I think the Bengals are picking a battle that
makes no sense to pick. We'll get to that a
little bit later on. We didn't spend a lot of
time on Trey Hendrickson yesterday, but Joe Burrow and Zach
Taylor were asked questions about Trey Hendrickson yesterday. I just
I want to talk a little bit later on about contracts,

(04:26):
plus more on the Bengals Ring of Honor, which created
a really fun discussion on the air yesterday with one
of our listeners. So we have a lot of ground
to cover between now and six and again, the entire
show preview is available on Twitter at Moeger. Show previews
are of a service of Emory Federal Credit Union, your
credit Union with Heart since nineteen thirty nine. Good to

(04:48):
Emory FCU dot org. I think I'm required to do
this too. I think if you're a sports talk radio host,
you have to spend at least a segment on the
tush push, which is not going to be banned. Banishment
needed twenty four of thirty two votes. The push to

(05:12):
ban the tush push did not get those twenty four votes,
instead only twenty two. I guess the twenty two to
ten margin the push. The tush push stays. By the way,
the game has gone final in Pittsburgh reds Low's three
one of the Pirates, which we'll talk about here in
in just a second. So the tush push is not
going to be banned, which means the Philadelphia Eagles can

(05:33):
continue to employ this play that they have perfected and
other teams are a going to have to figure out
how to stop it and b maybe use it to
their own benefit. We will see. I have never felt
particularly strongly either way about this, but if you make

(05:54):
me take a side, I lean toward not banning the
tush push because the rationale that has been used is
the play is not safe, that there is a player's
safety risk, and that's fine.

Speaker 4 (06:11):
My response is, show me the data. Show me the data.

Speaker 5 (06:16):
That suggests that there is an additional safety risk to
the tush push that isn't there with any other play.
There's always inherent risk. There's inherent risk in any athletic movement.
There's certainly inherent risk in any football play. Whether it's
the tush push or a throw downfield or an off
tackle handoff, or a wide receiver screen, or a punt

(06:40):
or a field goal or a kickoff, whatever, there's always
some inherent risk. What I have not seen, and what
I would need to see to vote for banishment, would
be some sort of hard evidence that would suggest that
the players involved in the tush push are at greater
risk of injury than when they're on the field for

(07:02):
any other type of play.

Speaker 4 (07:05):
I don't know about you. I haven't seen that.

Speaker 5 (07:09):
I've seen people speculate, I've seen people suggest I've seen
people wonder out loud.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
But if I'm going to take something out of the game, if.

Speaker 5 (07:19):
I'm going to take away what one team has perfected
as a legitimate weapon when they're in short yardage situations,
maybe you're different than me. I need to see something.
I need to see some data. I need to see
some like real evidence. I need to see something tangible
that would compel me to go. You know what, this
play is unsafe. There's a lot of data that tells

(07:41):
you it's unsafe, and so we're going to get rid
of something here that puts player players at a greater
risk of physical injury than anything else. In the absence
of that, I can't do it, man. I can't do it, man,
And I would imagine a lot of teams felt the
way that I did in the absence of hard data

(08:04):
that would suggest that this play is a bigger physical
risk than any other play. All I see and hear
are sour grapes. Sour grapes from the Green Bay Packers,
most notably because they introduce this push to ban the
tush push, and sour grapes from people and other teams

(08:26):
who have wanted the tush push to go away. If
you don't like it, stop the play. If you don't
like it, don't put your defense in short yardage situations.
And there's nothing that says you can't employ anything. I
do wonder this, if the Philadelphia Eagles were awesome at
the tush push and yet still a floundering middle of
the pack organization, would anybody care?

Speaker 4 (08:49):
My guess is the answer is no. So that's what
I'm looking for.

Speaker 5 (08:52):
And I've asked this like, all right, you don't like it,
and maybe you find the play itself not that esthetically pleasing,
and maybe you find the result of the play itself
to be sort of a foregone conclusion.

Speaker 4 (09:03):
And maybe you don't like watching.

Speaker 5 (09:05):
Uh, you know, a quarterbacks teammates push the ball carrier
across the line of scrimmage, that's fine. But if the
reasoning for the push to ban the push push is
players are at a greater safety risk, where's the evidence?

Speaker 4 (09:21):
Where's the data? I haven't seen it yet.

Speaker 5 (09:24):
Fourteen minutes after three o'clock ESPN fifteen thirty on Moeger
five point three seven four nine fifteen thirty is our
phone number. You could also use eight sixty six seven
oh two three seven seven six or or send a
tweet at Moeger thanks to Delta Dental. Delta Dental is
building healthy, smart, vibrant communities for all good at Delta Dental,
oh dot com. Maybe in the grand scheme of things,

(09:49):
losing two out of three to the Pittsburgh Pirates is
not a huge deal. Maybe in the grand scheme of things,
the Reds offense mustering one run across these last two
games is not that big of a deal. But I
don't know, man, I'm sitting here yesterday afternoon, going, you
know what if the Threats can at least win one
of the next two, maybe ahead of steam with the
Cubs coming to town this weekend in the first quote

(10:09):
big series of the year. Instead, it feels like the
air has come out of the balloon just a little bit.
Another series lost to a bad team. The Pirates came
into this series with a record of fourteen and thirty
two and they just beat the Reds two out of three.
We'll discuss it next on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, Cincinnatis,

(10:35):
twenty minutes after three o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen thirty
on Moegger. By the way, Red's lost three, one of
the Pirates, which we'll get to here in just a
few minutes. We are also paying attention to the UC
baseball game today and a lot of those games, a
lot of college baseball games are on ESPN Plus, which

(10:57):
a lot of people either don't have or they have
and they don't like watching the Bearcat game today. The
Big twelve Tournament is on ESPNU, which I've got to
think most sports fans have. You see leads that game
four to one, Bearcat's batting in the bottom of the
fifth inning. It's a single elimination tournament there at the

(11:18):
ballpark in Texas where the Texas Rangers play right next
to Jerry World, right by Texas Live.

Speaker 4 (11:27):
They're in Arlington.

Speaker 5 (11:29):
So we'll UPDH all afternoon and again you could watch
on ESPN you five, one, three, seven, nine, fifteen thirty
is our phone number. Will have reaction from Pittsburgh to
what degree there is it is getaway day. There is
no game tomorrow, Reds and Cubs on Friday. Look, I
like Will Benson, impartial Will Benson. I certainly acknowledge that

(11:50):
it is fair to wonder if Will Benson's recent surge
is a mirage.

Speaker 4 (11:56):
Clearly he's due to level off at some point.

Speaker 5 (11:58):
I think all of us would agree on that, and
time will tell if he's another version of Aristides Akino,
or if he's another version of last year's Reese Hines,
or if he is capable of doing something sustainable that
would make him the everyday guy in right field, or
at least have him in the lineup every day against
right handed pitching.

Speaker 4 (12:17):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (12:17):
It's one of the things I'm really interested in finding out.
I certainly think that it's legitimately fair to go you
know what, This isn't worth getting too worked up over.
It's not worth thinking that the Reds long standing issues
finding corner outfielders is solved because of Will Benson.

Speaker 4 (12:35):
But I also think you have.

Speaker 5 (12:36):
To be open to the idea that he is the
guy long term, and in doing so, you give him
a chance to play until he cools off. So he
didn't play last night. Now Will Benson might have played
last night and the Reds still may have lost one nothing,
and Will Benson didn't start today. Now he got into
the game as a pinch hitter, got hit by a pitch,

(12:57):
and then got thrown out stealing second base, which I
don't hate that much because you know you're trying to
make something happen offensively. You're trying to get a guy
in the scoring position with two outs. You're trying to
do anything you can to wake up this offense. But
it isn't out on the base pass, which has kind
of driven us nuts in the past in the past

(13:19):
with this year's team, and look, man, maybe there's some
sort of underlying issue, and maybe it'll come out today,
maybe you'll come out tomorrow when the Reds are off,
or maybe it'll come out when the Reds come back
home and play the Cubs on Friday. I don't know,
and I'll certainly acknowledge that, Like not every player can
play every single day. Players get off days. But last night, man,

(13:40):
come on number one. Even if you're trying to do
right by Will Benson's he's helped to carry your offense
here recently, like carry your offense. When the Reds swept

(14:01):
the Guardians and Will Benson had four homers in three games.
There weren't that many of his teammates who were contributing offensively.
They don't win those games without Will Benson. By the way,
Will Benson was also awesome in the field in those
games against the Guardians. The home run flow stopped on Monday,

(14:26):
the first game of the series, but he did have
a double. And so, all right, on one hand, you
understand not every player is going to play every single day.
At the same time, the guy just got called up,
Will Benson has been with the Reds for less than
two weeks. He needed a blow that badly, that on

(14:49):
a team that doesn't have that many other guys hitting,
you have to give him.

Speaker 4 (14:53):
A night off. So that's one question.

Speaker 5 (14:56):
And again, man, maybe Terry Francone is telling reporters right now,
well Will, I don't know he was used today, but fine,
he doesn't play. I'm not gonna pretend that I made
a huge stink about it yesterday. I did make a
huge stink about it watching the ninth inning last night
where the Reds get the lead off guy on. And

(15:17):
there are very few things that shock me. There are
very few things that like leave me going just stunned
by what I saw. But in the ninth inning of
a one nothing ball game last night, after TJ. Friedel
got on with a single to lead off the inning,
I thought for sure they would use Will Benson. I
thought for sure they would use Will Benson in that

(15:38):
situation against Pittsburgh's closer David Bednar. Instead, they let Santiago
Espinal hit now. Santiago Espinal has been a terrific addition
to this team, acquired out of necessity from Toronto. He
has played a lot of different positions. He handles the

(15:59):
bat well, He's played well in the field. He's competitive
at the plate. For a guy that when the Reds
acquired him, nobody cared, he's become a pretty valuable piece,
first of all for David Bell last year, this year,
for Terry Francona. But statistically he's not great against right
handed pitchers ops below six hundred batting average a two fifty.

(16:25):
He's probably not going to hit the ball out of
the ballpark. Many would argue that it might make sense
for Santiago Espinal to bunt. He didn't bunt, which was good.
He hid into a double play which wasn't. One batter later,
Elie de la Cruz made the last out in the
Reds loss last night.

Speaker 4 (16:43):
How do you not use Will Benson now?

Speaker 5 (16:45):
The answer that I have heard is, well, Santiago Espinal
handles the bat well fine. He might handle the Batwell,
he's not a great hitter against right handed pitching. Well,
but yeah, but then you have to do some things
on defense. You know, you you'd you'd have to play
Spencer Steer at third base. Okay, Austin said in Quick

(17:07):
Hits he had played over three hundred games at third base.
Gavin Lux has played fifteen major league innings at third base.
But okay, I'm worried about who's gonna play defense when
I'm losing in the top of the ninth inning, where
if I don't score a run, it doesn't matter who
could play defense. So there's a few different issues there.
At number one, there's there's managing for something that's not

(17:28):
guaranteed to happen unless you score. Number two, there's not
using your players available to you. Spencer Steer played last night,
he was in the game. He could play some third base.
Now you might go, well, yeah, but then who's gonna
play first base?

Speaker 4 (17:42):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (17:44):
Well, if you put Tyler Stevenson at first base, you
lose the DH. Okay, Well, then it begs another question.
Should they really be carrying three catchers? Now, I'm okay
carrying three catchers because obviously Travino and Stevenson are the
main guys, but Austin wins has helped the team out. Frankly,
he barely plays, but if his presence on the team
is going to keep you from using the hot hand

(18:06):
in the ninth inning of a one nothing game, within
your roster's not constructed the right way. So there's a
lot of different issues here. There is the decision the
manager made to give Will Benson the night off that
might have been made in concert with Will Benson. I'm
not going to crush him for that. I don't love it,
but okay, but the guy's healthy, he's available. He's the

(18:28):
guy propping up your offense right now. In a one
nothing game, you couldn't find an at bad for him.
Forget even the espadhal at bat. In a one nothing game,
you couldn't find an at bad for Will Benson when
he's hit five homers in five games. Now, if that's

(18:48):
just manager preference, that's one thing. If that's well, we
can't because of how the team is constructed, that's an
entirely different issue. You can't use the reigning National League
Player of the Week because you're worried about who's gonna
play defense, and you don't have a roster with enough
flexibility to move some players around, so you have to
keep the reigning National League MVP on the bench in

(19:11):
the ninth ending of a one nothing game, and then
he got today off. Now, I guess to a degree,
I understand here, right, I get it. Pittsburgh used a lefty.
Will Benson's not great against lefties? Who is and hasn't?

(19:33):
His recent success at least bought him the opportunity to
show that he's improved against lefties on a team that
got shut out last night. Now, Will Benson got in
the game and he did make it out trying to
steal that. Yeah, again, this isn't Fire Francona anything like that.
By the way, there is a terrific piece on cincinni

(19:55):
dot com written by Gordon Whittmeyer about Terry Francona and accountability.
It's a great read because there's a lot of behind
the scenes anecdotes there that I think you'll really like.

Speaker 4 (20:04):
But come on, man, like, this isn't about like. Will
Benson's figured it out.

Speaker 5 (20:10):
And he's a mainstay and he's gonna be the right
fielder for the next six seven years. It's he's the
one guy in your team hitting, the one guy on
your team hitting right now. There's no shortage of at
bats for Matt McClain, who can't hit anybody right now,
or uh any of the Tyler Stevenson who looks completely
flummexed at the plate. No shortage of at bats for him,

(20:31):
no shortage of at bats for Santiago Espinal. You can't
use the hottest player in your team in back to
back days when your offense isn't very good. At across
two games where he scored one run, there's nothing more
than one pinch hitting appearance that results in him getting
hit and then getting thrown out trying to steal. Oh no, man,

(20:52):
I get giving guys off. I certainly will backtrack a
little bit if we find out, you know, he's dealing
with some sort of physical ailment. I joked about maybe
he's mourning the loss of the pigeon that got hit
during batting practice the other night in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 4 (21:05):
I don't know, but.

Speaker 5 (21:10):
Last night, in the ninth inning, I couldn't believe Will
Benson didn't come up to hit for Santiago Espinal, and
the explanations after the game for me either don't make
sense or suggest the team is poorly constructed.

Speaker 4 (21:22):
I don't know. Maybe you could explain five.

Speaker 5 (21:24):
Point three seven four nine fifteen thirty and eight sixty
six seven oh two three seven seven six. I believe
in life there are battles worth fighting. Anybody who's ever
been married knows this.

Speaker 7 (21:36):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (21:37):
I think anybody who's ever managed employees knows this. There's
battles worth fighting, and then there's battles worth sort of
standing down for.

Speaker 6 (21:46):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (24:22):
Hopefully let's begin with three.

Speaker 4 (24:24):
Singer clearly didn't have his best stuff, but kept you
guys in the game.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
What did you see from him today?

Speaker 9 (24:28):
Yeah, I mean, and he competed like crazy and he
had to because I think he had for four walks,
five hits in five innings and still kept him where
we had chance.

Speaker 4 (24:39):
But it was it was work for him right from
the get.

Speaker 10 (24:41):
Go, and then offensively, we've kind of seen stretches like this,
especially over the last two games.

Speaker 3 (24:46):
Where would you kind of diagnose maybe where the offensive
problems have come from.

Speaker 9 (24:51):
I think there. I think it's again, I'd keep it
to today's game. You know, we made him work. We
made him throw a ton of pitches, kind of like
they do a singer. We just didn't have much to
show for it. And you know that that's that's difficult.
You know, we didn't get a lot of hits. We
did make him work, and you'd like to hope that
that gives you a better chance to win.

Speaker 11 (25:14):
You guys haven't had that late come back in the
final innings yet this season. How would you let to
see the team kind of approach and what can you
do to maybe breakthrough in the final innings.

Speaker 9 (25:22):
In general, there's no magic potion, I'm telling you. I mean,
it's it's just baseball. Those things will happen. That's not
a lack of wanting to and things like that. If
you think that's the case, I don't know. If you
know the game, it's just that's part of the game,

Kind of a crummy thing to say to Charlie. There,
that's Terry Francona. After the game. We stole that. Do
we steal that audio, Darren? They have to get so
we borrowed the audio from the FanDuel Sports Network. Brady
Singer pitched and he battled. H He did walk for guys.
He wasn't awesome at not giving up base runners, he
was decent at minimizing the damage. Here he is with

(26:15):
reporters in borrow borrowed audio after the game.

Speaker 3 (26:20):
Pretty maybe not your best stuff, but you still get
your team a great chance to win.

Speaker 12 (26:24):
What did you think about your stuff out there today?

Speaker 1 (26:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 13 (26:27):
I mean, first of all, the defense was incredible. They
saved me a lot there. But yeah, you know, I'm
just trying to battle. That's kind of feel like what
I've been doing the past couple of outrings just kind
of made it part of myself with the walks, Yeah,
I just had to have a battle and try to.

Speaker 1 (26:42):
Keep us in again.

Speaker 2 (26:43):
Did any have your pitches steel good or was.

Speaker 1 (26:45):
It a battle from the get go?

Speaker 11 (26:47):
Yeah?

Speaker 13 (26:47):
No, many of them felt very good. It was kind
of just a battle, like you said, but just just
trying to make pictures, trying to I'm trying to work
through it. I'm trying to keep us in the game
there and trying to you know, ultimately want to get
deeper in the game there, but you know, trying to
get through five and give up both on the chancel.

Speaker 7 (27:02):
It's just we've been just in general coming into Pittsburgh
and lose, and when it was in a series of
these last two days.

Speaker 13 (27:10):
Yeah, I mean it's you know, not obviously what we
wanted to do, but we're gonna go out there and
battle and give us a give certain a chance to win.
And you know, that's what we did. It's it's a
long season. We're gonna have these things happen up and down.
But you know, we'll get a day off tomorrow and
then you know, get back to work.

Speaker 11 (27:27):
We're in first any we're able to reset. You know,
how did you kind of flip the script? You ran
into some early trouble you escaped the gym pretty well.

Speaker 13 (27:33):
Yeah, you know, just try to kind of figure out
what's working and what's what's not working, and just try
to attack hitters. You know, not really what I did,
but you know that was the goal is to is
to go at them and try to stand his own
and get some early contact, try to get deeper in
the game. You know, not not exactly what I did,
but uh, you know what's my intention. But the the walks,
I'm just you're not happy with, you know, I don't

(27:54):
want to give up free bags there and feel like
something I've been doing lately and obviously frustrating those walks.

Speaker 5 (28:00):
All right, So there's Brady Singer in borrowed audio after
the game thanks to the fan Duel Sports Network. The
Reds are this season four and two against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
We focus a lot about a lot on the quality
of teams they play, and Pittsburgh is not very good.
The Reds did sweep them in mid April in Cincinnati.

(28:22):
But you know, you look at series against the Chicago
White Sox, who are atrocious, who are nineteen games under
five hundred.

Speaker 4 (28:30):
You look at a series on the road against the
Miami Marlins.

Speaker 5 (28:32):
The Marlins are maybe not quite as bad as teams
like Pittsburgh and Chicago, but they're not good. In last
place in the National League East, nine under five hundred.
Reds lost two out of three to them, and then
the series in Pittsburgh coming off, you know, sweeping the
Guardians and you win the first one. When you win
the first one and you're the better team, you'd like
to think you can get out of town with at
least one more win. Pittsburgh is sixteen under five hundred.

(28:55):
Reds lost two out of three to them, so you know,
like it happens during the course of a season. Man,
But you know, I we talk about the small margin
for air. We talk about having the take care of
business against bad teams. We talk about having to not
spin your tires. The Reds will go into Memorial Day
weekend below five hundred, and they'll come out of the
Chicago series having hit the one third mark. So you

(29:19):
know they're at arm's length. You know, they they're not
They're not where the Pirates are. They're not you know,
they're not sunk. There is hope. You could see the
Cubs from where the Reds are. You could see the
Cubs from where the Cardinals are closer.

Speaker 4 (29:35):
I guess you could see.

Speaker 5 (29:36):
First place and you can make a big dent this
weekend and dramatically make a move in the National League
Central If you sweep this series against Chicago. But the
first one third of the season so far has been
kind of just about spinning their tires and with an
offense that has limitations. I don't know how that changes

(29:57):
drastically enough to to win enough games to win this division.
You know, I did this, I think last week, and
people I saw some folks on social media and one
emailer in particular got mad at me where I referenced
the pace the Cubs are on. Well, right now, the
Chicago Cubs are on a ninety five win pace. Ninety

(30:19):
five win pace. You can talk about the game's back column,
and the Reds aren't that far back. And if they
sweep this series, they're only two back. Or if they
can get two out of three this weekend, then two
out of three next weekend. The Chicago Cubs are playing
five ninety two baseball. That's a it's a ninety five
win pace. The Reds are gonna have to pick up

(30:41):
there here, pick up theirs here very soon. And I'm
gonna have to learn how to master the English language soon.
All right, let's stay on time phone calls. Next ESPN

Speaker 4 (31:30):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm moregor by the way.

Speaker 5 (31:34):
I misspoke about something yesterday. I gave wrong info. I
don't like giving wrong info. The correct info that I
gave out was on Friday, we are announcing the winner
of this year's mowyor Long contest, which we have done
now I think for fourteen consecutive years, with the exception
of the COVID year when there were no shows at Rivermen.

(31:54):
But anyway, uh, we're announcing the winner on Friday, four
to thirty five. We name, we give the name of
the winner of this year's Moyor Lawn Contest, and that
winner will win a brand new lawnmower, brand new, not used, okay,
not a bunch of grass clipping's on it, no nowhere
into brand new, no miles on it at all, brand
new lawnmower from a BACKXLA tractor, and tickets to all

(32:18):
the River Bend shows. So we're announcing the winner on Friday. Yesterday,
I said the last day to sign up is today.
That is not true. You have until noon tomorrow, so
you're getting a little bit of an extension. I got
off the air yesterday and I got a text from
somebody in promotions who said, actually, Thursday at noon is

(32:38):
when we stopped taking entries, so you have all day today.
You basically have twenty hours and nine minutes to enter
the Moor Lawn Contest. All you have to do is
go to the contest and promotions page of ESPN fifteen
thirty dot com and I've got links on my social media.
Good luck, uh Mark, you're on ESPN fifteen thirty. Good afternoon,

(33:00):
How are you good?

Speaker 14 (33:01):
Good? Thank you? Listen. I'm gonna make a Terry Francona
prediction here. Okay, I'm going to predict at the All
Star Game, he reassesses the ownership, the man, the front office,
and the players, decides the all stink develops a pretend
health problem and retires from baseball.

Speaker 4 (33:24):
That's your prediction, He's gonna develop it.

Speaker 14 (33:26):
I think he thinks this is year is going to
hurt his reputation.

Speaker 4 (33:31):
I don't think he could care less about that.

Speaker 14 (33:33):
You really don't know. I mean here, he's considered a
great manager and uh, you know, stuck with one of
the worst teams ever.

Speaker 4 (33:41):
Well, Number one, I don't think one year undoes that reputation.
Number two.

Speaker 5 (33:44):
I think anybody who looked at Terry Francona unfavorably because
of one year in Cincinnati is probably ignoring a whole
bunch of underlying issues that you just referenced.

Speaker 14 (33:55):
Well, you're probably right. I was being a little facetious.
But he's got to be thinking something's wrong. We were
told when they hired him, all the ownership's going to
spare no ex sense. They're going to go out and
fire some players. Terry wouldn't be coming here for this.

Speaker 4 (34:11):
Kind of Who said that? Who said that?

Speaker 14 (34:15):
Different personalities on different radio stations. I don't know who
I'm not saying you said, I'm not pointing to you.

Speaker 5 (34:22):
But I mean, that's the thing, Like, because other people
said that doesn't mean that Terry Francona has sold a
bill of goods. Like I don't think for a second
that Terry Francona took the job thinking that suddenly the
Reds were going to spend a whole bunch of money
that they haven't spent. So anybody people are allowed to
make their own conclusion, and my take on it was
that Terry Francona isn't so much impressed by what the

(34:42):
Reds are about to spend that he's pretty impressed by
what the Reds have and what he walks into, and
thus far what he has walked into has not yielded
dramatically better results.

Speaker 14 (34:55):
Well, let me say this. Can you think of what
position on this team, Let's just use the lineup that's
started today that that is, you know, not playing up
to what they should be. I mean, they're terrible offensive
out the team, one one after the other. Every player

(35:19):
on that team is underperforming. You agree with that, don't you.

Speaker 5 (35:23):
I don't think every player. Maybe Hayes, when he's been healthy,
has been okay. Travino has been better than I think
people expected, but I mean beyond.

Speaker 14 (35:31):
He doesn't play anymore.

Speaker 4 (35:32):
He plays a lot. Yeah, he actually plays a whole lot.

Speaker 14 (35:36):
Travinol Travenil, Yeah, the other catcher. And I know he
said Travinil. He hasn't gotten one at bat since Stevenson's
been back on the roster, and Travinil's played very very limited.
Uh hasn't. I don't think he's d H one time.
And he certainly has got the majority of the catching

(35:56):
since Stevenson has been back, and Stevenson is terrible. He
can hit.

Speaker 5 (36:02):
And I mean you asked, you asked who was who
has been better than expected?

Speaker 4 (36:07):
And I said Jose Travino.

Speaker 14 (36:09):
Yes, Okay, well, yeah, he's been much better than expecting.
So his Austin h yes, yes. But overall, if you
go around, every position on that team needs to be improved.
And I'm not advocating getting rid of Della Cruise, sending

(36:30):
him down or anything, but at least move him out
of the third spot. I mean, he is having a
terrible year so far.

Speaker 5 (36:37):
Agree, I think he's I don't think he's having a
terrible year. I think he's having an underwhelming year relative
to expectations. Well, the number, the numbers looked the same
as last year. That's last year. His numbers were good
enough to be eighth in the m v P voting.
That wasn't terrible. But I am disappointed by the season
that he's had so far, no question, because I see
the same player statistically.

Speaker 4 (36:57):
He is the same player, but.

Speaker 14 (37:00):
Gonna win anything.

Speaker 5 (37:00):
So let me but what I will But what I
will agree with you, and what I think is hard
to argue is that if you look around the team,
like you could say Elie Delacruz shouldn't be batting third,
and I could not I could not agree more. The
problem is I'm not sure who should be batting third?

Speaker 14 (37:16):
Oh yeah, I agree that that's definitely problem. Like there's
no hitters. Okay, let me ask you this in connection
with that, if you have the ability, can you think
of two players out there that the Reds could acquire?
I mean any two any two hitters, no pitchers, any
two hitters that are out there that could be acquired.

(37:39):
Is there anybody that Atlanta would give up for some
Reds players? Or is everybody? They just trade prospects these days,
they don't trade players for players anymore? Do they the
Reds anybody?

Speaker 4 (37:53):
It seems like, I mean, most.

Speaker 5 (37:56):
In season trades I think are either going to involve
prospects for established players or players early in their big
league career for established players. I mean the Reds made
a player for player trade this offseason India for Brady Singer.

Speaker 14 (38:10):
Yeah, yeah, that's true.

Speaker 5 (38:13):
And by the way, and the frustrating thing is, like,
you know, people are gonna say, well, the red should
trade for Luis Robert Jr.

Speaker 4 (38:18):
Louise Robert Jr.

Speaker 5 (38:19):
Would fit in on this team very well right now,
because he's batting about a.

Speaker 14 (38:23):
Bucket, right I don't I truth out. It wouldn't take him,
although he looked good defensively, real good defensively, but he
wasn't hitting either. I would look. I mean, I don't
know where you get him. But a player like Atlanta's
first baseman guy hits like crazy and Cincinnati adds, yes,

(38:43):
they need I mean they need a bomber. They need,
they need two bombers is what they need. I can't
think of one player's name out there that the Reds
could trade far, can you?

Speaker 5 (38:54):
Uh No? But I would start mine. I mean, the
problem is bad teams are really bad for a reason.
There's not a lot of talent there. People have talked
about mining what the Marlins have, or mining what the
Rockies have, or even a team like the Chicago White Sox.
But I'll be honest with you, there aren't many names
there that jump off the page for me that I go, Okay,
I want to give up a lot of trade capital
for for what I can get from those teams.

Speaker 14 (39:16):
All right, good deal, good deal. One last quickie, I know,
I said, last, What game in the NFL season does
security arrest Dion Sanders and take them off the field.

Speaker 5 (39:28):
If he's on the field, Chances are he as a
pass and when he's probably not going to be taken off.

Speaker 4 (39:32):
But you're a brown guy. Wait a minute, you're a
Browns guy, right?

Speaker 14 (39:35):
You are right?

Speaker 4 (39:37):
So are you excited?

Speaker 5 (39:38):
We're going to make it.

Speaker 14 (39:39):
We're gonna make it the third place this year? I
guarantee it.

Speaker 4 (39:45):
All right, plausible, that's plausible. We'll see Martin.

Speaker 14 (39:48):
You I can even make it the third place with
the best two receivers in the NFL. Who's the bad
season for you? Boys?

Speaker 4 (39:55):
You don't think the Bengals going to finish? You think
the Bengals. Bengals can vision last place for.

Speaker 14 (40:00):
The forty seven straight year. I'm predicting them last place.

Speaker 4 (40:05):
We'll make a friendly wager, Mark, I don't think the
Bengals will not.

Speaker 14 (40:09):
No, Hey, I'm not betting anything anything. I'm just I'm
hoping more than thinking.

Speaker 5 (40:18):
I can understand. I appreciate the fault we we agree
about the Reds. I think we just have a different
way of getting there. But yes, I could hear the
frustration in your voice.

Speaker 4 (40:27):
I don't think Terry's killing me.

Speaker 14 (40:28):
I'm sixty five year as a Reds fan, and it
gets worse than worse every year.

Speaker 4 (40:33):
I don't think.

Speaker 5 (40:34):
I don't think Terry Francona is going to quit at
the All Star break.

Speaker 4 (40:37):
That said, I think.

Speaker 10 (40:39):
I think I get the job.

Speaker 14 (40:41):
I'll come on your show regularly.

Speaker 4 (40:42):
I can't wait.

Speaker 5 (40:43):
But I do think Mark, it will be interesting if
this season goes sideways to see what he decides to
do at the end of the season. I'll grant you that.

Speaker 14 (40:52):
Okay, Look, we all know the Reds problem. We all
know what it is.

Speaker 5 (40:57):
They haven't won in forever. There's distrust and ownership. There's
distrust in the front office and they got a team
on the field this year that is underwhelmed at best
and has spun its tires over the first fifty one
games of the season. Mark, thank you. It's coming up
on four o'clock. Five point three seven four nine, fifteen
thirty is our phone number. Bengals, Please tell me won't
finish in last place. This is ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati

Speaker 5 (41:28):
If you want to read an email that I think
would fall onto the category of scathing, I just bit
my lip again.

Speaker 4 (41:36):
Would fall under the category of scathing.

Speaker 5 (41:40):
Check out this one to Connie Pillach, the Hamilton County
prosecuting attorney from the in house council for the Bengals,
Emma Compton. Don't we don't do stadium issue talk on
this station because I just don't think.

Speaker 4 (41:54):
That many people care.

Speaker 5 (41:56):
But if you you want to enjoy a scathing letter,
you can go find it wherever you look for your
scathing letters.

Speaker 4 (42:05):
What is up?

Speaker 5 (42:05):
It's three six minutes after four o'clock. This is ESPN.
I just said, what is up? An homage to Jim Rome.
Perhaps this is ESPN fifteen thirty on Moeger. Thank you
for listening today. Reds lose to the Pirates three to one.
Is the final score? Really quick? Here just a couple
of things that Mark mentioned. Also, I'll let you know

(42:26):
that you see in the Big twelve Tournament, top of
the eighth inning, Texas Tech is batting trailing the Bearcats
by a score of six y four, A big game
for U see as the Bearcats look to enhance their
NCAA tournament resume. A couple of things really quick that
were brought up from our previous caller number one about
Terry Francona. When Terry Francona took the job, there were

(42:49):
a lot of people, whether they speak into a microphone
or a camera for a living, whether they're you know,
just you know, ordinary fans, well whatever, there were a
lot of folks who saw that Terry Francona is coming
to Cincinnati, and I think created a narrative that he's
coming here because the Reds have assured him that they're

(43:10):
gonna spend a lot of money on the team. I
didn't take it that way. I said as much into
this microphone. I didn't take it that way. I took
it as Terry Francona really missed being in a dugout
and sees with what the Reds have, he sees potential,
sees potential in what the Reds have with the starting pitching,

(43:33):
with some of the younger players, sees potential. Now, the
Reds did do some things this offseason. By the way,
some of those things have have yielded really good results.
Austin Hayes has been a nice pickup, and Jose Travino
has been a nice pickup.

Speaker 4 (43:46):
And Brady Singer has been all right.

Speaker 5 (43:49):
Ishm you know, Gavin lux has been okay. It's not
like they stood patting didn't They didn't hire a manager
and then White. Now, I would certainly argue they didn't
do enough. They had a team that at the end
of the spring training many of us said, looks incomplete.
But if you have been operating under the assumption that

(44:11):
Terry Francona took the job because he believed the Reds
were gonna throw a whole bunch of money that they
haven't had in recent seasons into the team, I think
that was a narrative created by outsiders. I don't recall
Terry Francona saying when he got the job, Yeah, I
did this because I've been told the Reds are gonna

(44:32):
spend a lot of money. I've been told they're gonna
be uber, uber, uber aggressive and building the best possible team.

Speaker 4 (44:38):
It's not That's not the impression that I got.

Speaker 5 (44:40):
At least I got the impression that he took the
job because he saw some potential here, liked what the
Reds had, and thought that was a good place to start.

Speaker 4 (44:51):
That being said, the.

Speaker 5 (44:59):
Caller said, he's he believes Terry Francona is going to
leave at the All Star break and come up with
a fake health condition. I think that's a little unfair.
Terry Francona has had some legitimate health issues, and I
think everybody respects his privacy enough to not delve into them.
But he has been pretty forthcoming about the number of
surgeries that he has had, the difficulty has had in

(45:20):
doing the job and walking. When he was with the Guardians,
he missed some time, like he has had some legitimate
health issues. And I try to say this as gently
as possible when you have had a whole lot of
health issues, as Terry Francona, has. I guess it would
be unsurprising if suddenly there were such a reoccurrence of

(45:41):
those health issues that it might compel him to examine
whether or not he can and wants to continue. I
then think it would be unsurprising if, at the end
of the season, after a full season in the dugout,
going through the daily grind of being in the job,
that if he started to not feel well again, that
he would go, Okay, I'm going to have to leave.
I could certainly understand why he may say, you know what,

(46:03):
this task at hand here. I'm not in my forties,
I'm not in my fifties. I don't know that we're
gonna be able to win here in the next couple
of years, and so I'm not gonna just cash a check.

Speaker 4 (46:14):
I'm gonna maybe he does that. I don't know.

Speaker 5 (46:16):
I do think it's going to be interesting to see
how he responds to this season. No matter how it goes, hell,
the Reds can win the World Series, and there would
be a part of me that went, God, if you're
Terry francona mission accomplished.

Speaker 4 (46:28):
Siya.

Speaker 5 (46:29):
What I certainly don't believe, though, for a second, is
that anything that happens here is going to ruin Terry
Francona's reputation as a manager. That dude is going to Cooperstown.
Sometimes really good managers oversee bad seasons. Sometimes really good
managers walk into situations where they just don't get it
done to the extent that they used to. So I

(46:52):
don't look at this at all. I do look at
this season through the lens of among many others. You know,
how is Tito processing everything that's happening around him, How
is he processing his role in the organization, the talent
the Reds have, what the Reds have versus maybe what
he believed they had.

Speaker 4 (47:14):
What's his working relationship like with Nick Krawl.

Speaker 5 (47:17):
Like let's say this year at the trade deadline, the
Reds are in it and Nick Krawl again does nothing
to really make the team that much better.

Speaker 1 (47:25):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (47:25):
If I'm Terry Francona, I'm sticking that in my back
pocket as I constantly re evaluate whether or not this
is something I want to keep doing. I think it's
really unfair to say, well, he's going to invent some
sort of health issue. I think it's sort of silly
to say at the All Star break he's going to
bail on the team.

Speaker 4 (47:39):
But like, what would anybody be stunned?

Speaker 5 (47:41):
But any maybe just like floored if at the end
of this year he decided, you know what, I'm good,
came back, enjoyed it, glad I was back in the dugout,
had a great time. I'm gonna go back to retirement.
I don't think anybody would be stunned. And I think
based on how he has communicated his love for the
job itself, I don't think anybody would be stunned if,
no matter how the season unfolds this year, if he

(48:03):
said I feel great, I'm gonna come back.

Speaker 4 (48:06):
Mission not accomplished.

Speaker 5 (48:07):
I still want to get it done here, and I'm
gonna come back and be with the team in twenty
twenty six, I don't know. I think the Reds have
other issues right now in the short term, and that's
figuring out ways to improve offensively. Like we've talked a
lot about Will Benson over the last couple of days,
and I like Will Benson a lot, and the Will
Benson story is one that we all hope sticks. And

(48:29):
watching him this weekend was a blast, and it's fair
to wonder about his usage the last couple of days
in Pittsburgh. But it's also kind of pathetic that we're
making a big deal about Will Benson not playing these
last two games when he was in Louisville two weeks ago.
That's a statement about how good Will Benson has been.
It's also an indictment against the rest of the team.

(48:51):
You need Will Benson to be able to manufacture more
than one run in two games. Will Benson, Like, I
love Will Benson, my favorite non Hunter Green Red love
Will Benson.

Speaker 4 (49:06):
Dude was in Louisville two weeks ago, and.

Speaker 5 (49:08):
Now they can't survive without him for two games and
score more than one run in two days. You kidding me?
That is a damning indictment against the rest of the team.
So you know what has to be figured out. It's
May twenty first, so if you're gonna start talking trade deadline,
that's neat. I haven't counted how many games the Reds

(49:30):
have before July thirty first. They're gonna have to find
ways to get better offensively internally, and that might be
as simple as players who have underperformed need to perform better,
like Ellie Deyla Cruz. I don't think he's had a
bad season, because I don't think he had a bad
season last year. The problem is his season this year

(49:54):
looks like last season. Statistically, it's very similar. This team
was built around Elie de la Cruz being better this year.
When's it gonna start? When's Matt McClain gonna get going?
Man him in Pittsburgh this week was rough. He still
strikes out a lot, Still doesn't make heard contact consistently enough,

(50:16):
Still way too many at bats that seem non competitive.
We all have really high hopes for Matt McClain. You
get people who get tears in their eyes if you
even mentioned the fact that maybe it's time to think
about demoting him. He had some people that wanted a
riot when they moved him out of the two hole
in the batting order. They're, okay, fine, when's the guy
gonna when's the guy gonna hit? Like legitimately, when's the guy?

(50:37):
When's Tyler Stevenson gonna hit? In whatever role he's in? Catcher,
dh doesn't matter. And again, like you could say, well, yeah,
Nick Krawl should have done more of this offseason, said it.
You could hope that Nick Krawl does something big around
the trade deadline. Fine, it's more than two months away. Man,

(50:59):
how to do this offense get better? Like, well, Benson's
not going to hit a home run every night when
he plays. And I've given this team a lot of
credit for cleaning up a lot of the slop over
the last week or so. I think that's a big deal. Right,
They have to win in the margins. They have to
find out ways to win low run, low scoring games.
And the way you do that is by playing sound defense,

(51:21):
not giving up bases, not giving up outs, not giving
up outs on the base pass. I don't have a
problem with Will Benson trying to steal in the seventh
inning today, I guess that was the eighth inning. I
don't have a problem with that. But by and large,
this team has cleaned up a lot of that stuff
and that's really good. But if they're really gonna take
off and really play at a level that puts them

(51:41):
in a position to win this division offensively, this team
has to be better, has to be more consistent, and
those solutions that they've got to come from within. There
just simply have to be guys who do better. Now,
we've talked for two months now. Whenever a player underperforms
about how well it's ear and give him time and

(52:02):
it's gonna be okay. It's it's almost June man Memorial
Day weekends. This weekend, we're gonna hit the fifty four
game mark on Sunday.

Speaker 4 (52:10):
Some of these guys just have to play better.

Speaker 5 (52:14):
And if in four months we're still talking about how
they didn't perform better, well, then their roles on the
team moving forward really have to be discussed. I don't know,
Like again, you screaming yell about the manager not using
Will Benson. God knows I've done that. I think it's ridiculous.

(52:36):
They didn't use their hottest hitter in the ninth inning
last night. It's sort of silly he had to have
back to back days off, but this team is useless offensively.
If Will Benson doesn't play, what's gonna happen when he
cools off? My guess is he's back in the starting
lineup on Friday. What's gonna happen when he cools off?

(52:58):
Who's gonna pick up the slack? I mean, Connor Joe?
Is that the answer? Reese Hines?

Speaker 4 (53:07):
What do you got for me?

Speaker 5 (53:11):
Seventeen minutes after four o'clock, five three seven, fifteen thirty.
Let's talk to one or two folks who have been
waiting patiently. Jeff, you're on ESPN fifteen thirty. Hello Jeff.

Speaker 3 (53:24):
Happy Wednesday, Mo Happy Wednesday, Jeff.

Speaker 4 (53:26):
What's up?

Speaker 3 (53:28):
That steak looked very delicious last night?

Speaker 4 (53:31):
It was very tasty. It was very tasty.

Speaker 5 (53:34):
Dan Horde, Terry Nelson and I enjoyed the struggle for
the steak dinner last night at the precinct.

Speaker 6 (53:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (53:40):
So I think you deserve some type of radio award.
That guy Robert who's the Cardinals fan, and that guy
Mark who's the Browns fan. You take those guys pretty well.

Speaker 6 (53:48):
I think.

Speaker 3 (53:49):
Actually, even if it's it's nails on the chalkboard to
everybody else listening, you do a good job with those
guys well.

Speaker 5 (53:56):
And I enjoy giving time to anybody who chooses to
give us, and regardless of who they root for, anybody
is welcome.

Speaker 6 (54:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (54:05):
And the guy yesterday, what was the topic yesterday? It
was so involving I can't even remember now.

Speaker 4 (54:09):
Bengals Ring of Honor.

Speaker 5 (54:10):
We had a guy I talked to him for twelve
minutes yesterday about the Bengals Ring of Honor.

Speaker 3 (54:16):
That's right, that's right onto the tush push. If you
remember last year we stopped at two plays in a row.
You just got to get across the line and pull
Hurts sideways. That's all you got now, quote unquote, that's
all you've got to do, and nobody can do it.
But I think I'm waiting for in a month or
so the quote unquote point of emphasis note to go

(54:36):
out to the officials about offside and false starts on
the tush push.

Speaker 6 (54:41):
That's my prediction of what's going to happen.

Speaker 5 (54:42):
Yeah, I mean what you can have is you can
have a scenario like in the NFC Championship game last
year where the officials came within a play of just
giving the Eagles a touchdown because of the commanders jumping
off sides.

Speaker 4 (54:54):
You can't have that, but the go ahead, go ahead.

Speaker 3 (55:00):
When you watch the camera right down the line, there's
something going on there all the time, and Hurts usually
takes like a half step back before he pushes forward
before the ball is snapped anyway.

Speaker 5 (55:11):
Yeah, look, they have figured out a way to perfect it.
Other teams have tried it and they haven't had the
same success. What are the teams that are defending those
teams doing to stop the toush push. The Eagles have
figured out a way to make it, used to make
it work, but they went. You know, the movement was
to ban it around the league. Well, it's not as
successful in other places. What are teams doing that play

(55:34):
those other teams that aren't as successful?

Speaker 4 (55:36):
That's what I want.

Speaker 3 (55:38):
Well, And since we had a vote for once that
wasn't thirty one to one, which tide do we think
the Bengals were on? For one? I am convinced that
there is somewhat of a correlation between all those thirty
one to one votes and how the.

Speaker 6 (55:53):
Schedule gets played out. You won't be able to convince
me otherwise.

Speaker 4 (55:56):
No, I think there's some validity to that.

Speaker 5 (56:00):
You know, for years it was it was always for years,
it felt like it was thirty to one to one
abstain and that was always the Raiders and the Bengals
would just vote, know to any change whatsoever. You know,
you would like to think that that's not the case.
But when there's no plausible explanation for some of the
stuff that gets thrown at them schedule wise, I don't

(56:20):
know how your mind doesn't drift to more conspiratorial scenarios.

Speaker 3 (56:27):
Well, and I think they're going to find out trying
to bully the county is a lot different than bullying
player agents. This you know that again. I think this
is going to come down to the Bengals don't really
care about what happens with the least they care about
quote unquote winning and negotiation. Is we've seen from Shamar

(56:48):
Stewart all the way back to whoever you want to
go to. Some of this stuff is mind boggling. But
and quickly on the Reds, Yeah, can you tell me
how Jr. House stays employed?

Speaker 6 (57:00):
Been gone last year?

Speaker 4 (57:01):
Not great? Is he not great at all?

Speaker 3 (57:03):
No, he's not that. That's you from down the third
base line today.

Speaker 4 (57:07):
That ball was.

Speaker 3 (57:08):
Almost out of the left fielder's hand when he decided
to wave his arm around. And I get it. The
team's not hitting. Maybe he's being told to be more aggressive.
There could be a million things behind it. But this
is not the only time we've seen this in the
last two or three.

Speaker 5 (57:22):
It crossed the line from aggressive to stupidity. We all
want them to be aggressive. That was stupid, That was
you're right as soon as you saw the ball get
picked up, assuming it was.

Speaker 4 (57:34):
Going to be an online throw. You knew how that
was going to end.

Speaker 3 (57:38):
Yeah, yeah, all right, Well, good luck to the Knicks tonight.
Enjoy the game without a heart attack.

Speaker 5 (57:42):
Oh they'll need to, Jeff, thank you so much. It's
twenty two minutes after four o'clock. We have to get
a break in five, one, three, seven, nine, fifteen thirty.
I do it to spend a few minutes on Shamar
Stewart will do that, plus Brendiman and Jones on baseball
later this hour. You see, had a guy get picked
off first base. So Texas Tech is bad. In the
top of the ninth inning with the Bearcats clinging to

(58:03):
a one clinging to a one run lead. I was
about to say one nothing, clinging to a six' to
five lead in The big twelve, tournament and there are
about to be two, Outs so The Red raiders down
to their last. Out bearcats looking to advance and again

You're the the apologist for the team will, say it's just,

ticket holder you can vote on who the two inductees
are going to be, this year assuming it's going to be,
two INDUCTEES and i was making the point that with
the nine men on, the ballot they should just go
ahead and put them. All in and we got a
guy Who got Jim from centerville yesterday called, the show
and he started it by saying really nice things, about
me which, was great and then we had, a good,

(01:06:27):
like heated but like passionate back and forth About the Ring,
of honor and, you know his general take was it
should be a little bit. More exclusive you know That
in pittsburgh they're not Putting In jim Breach And, max
montoya and, YOU know i kind of went back, and
looked and they have a lot of guys, who aren't,
you Know Pro football hall of famers who are In

(01:06:48):
their Hall of Honor. In pittsburgh and it was really.
Fun Conversation man LIKE when i started in talk radio
nearly twenty eight, years AGO what i loved about it
were the fun debates and. What not not the debates
you SEE on espn where they yell at, each other
but like the fun discussions where two people are talking about,
an issue and, in sports really the fun and. Games

(01:07:10):
department we, may disagree we may, you know try to
make points to make the others arguments, seem stupid and then, we,
say cool thanks, for calling talk to you. Next time
because this is supposed to, BE fun i don't think
people like doing. That anymore nobody wants to have a friendly.
Debate anymore people just love to insult on. Social media
so the call yesterday was. A throwback it was funny

(01:07:31):
because we don't have many of. THOSE anymore i had
some folks who, were, like oh that. Was bad you.
WERE me i, wasn't mean we're having. A discussion, SO
anyway i really. Enjoyed it here's my overall point of
view when it comes to halls of fame and rings,
of honor.

Speaker 4 (01:07:51):
It's that they shouldn't be taken. That seriously, YEARS ago.

Speaker 5 (01:07:58):
I was Driving Through new ENGLAND and i took like,
a WEEK and i wanted to drive through and spend
a night In Every new england STATE places i had never,
been to.

Speaker 4 (01:08:10):
AND so.

Speaker 5 (01:08:11):
I started i Started, in connecticut Went, To, mahigan sun
Went To, new haven Went To, rhode island hung Out,
in providence went to a few Places In, new hampshire
drove Up, to maine spent two nights In, bar harbor
ended up Going.

Speaker 4 (01:08:29):
To vermont that.

Speaker 5 (01:08:30):
Was fun And then i'm driving Back and i'm driving
THROUGH and i was meeting friends of Mine, in PHILADELPHIA
and i stopped off At The basketball Hall of Fame,
in springfield mass which they had. Just redone THIS is i,
don't know maybe twenty, years ago and. It's Cool basketball

(01:08:53):
Hall of Fame in springfield. Is cool this was NOT
something i had planned. ON doing i JUST knew i
was going to be Driving through Springfield And i'll, i'm,
LIKE hell i got, Some time i'm gonna go check.

Speaker 4 (01:09:02):
That out the whole thing took me about.

Speaker 1 (01:09:04):
An hour.

Speaker 5 (01:09:06):
In The Springfield Naysmith Memorial basketball Hall, of fame when you,
walk in there's, a subway like not the subway that
you get on to go places like the sandwich store
five dollars Foot longs that place.

Speaker 4 (01:09:23):
A subway.

Speaker 5 (01:09:26):
And for, whatever reason seeing the subway In The National
basketball Hall of fame made me alter my Views about Halls.
Of fame this is not a. Sacred place there's a,
gift store there's. A subway there was also like a,
cookie stand like a locally owned. Cookie stand this isn't,

(01:09:46):
A church this isn't some. Sacred place it's, a museum
it's a place. Of commerce it's a PLACE where i
can look at, some plaques check out some, old jerseys
and get. A Meatball sub let's stop acting like halls
of fame are these.

Speaker 4 (01:10:06):
Sacred places so.

Speaker 5 (01:10:08):
This has been my view for almost, twenty Years and
i've done this on. This show, you know it's like
when we talk about. Bat, flips oh you're disrespecting. THE
game i don't think games are to. BE respected I
think i think people are to be respected games, or
games sports or sports or we're not talking. Religion Here

(01:10:28):
so i'm a big haul GUY because i think most
fans of a sport can make. The distinction like In
The basketball Hall, of Fame There's. Michael Jordan mitch richmond
is also In The basketball Hall. Of fame anybody who
knows how high the rim is could tell you pretty

(01:10:52):
big Difference Between michael Jordan And.

Speaker 4 (01:10:54):
Mitch richmond Nothing Against. MITCH richmond.

Speaker 5 (01:10:57):
I think anybody who knows anything about basse could tell
you a pretty big difference Between stam Usual And. Bill mazeroski,
or hey you, know what pretty big Difference Between johnny
Bench And. Ryan Samberg so i'm a big haul GUY
because i think you can allow most people to kind

(01:11:18):
of make, the, distinction like Not every hall of. Famers equal,
you Know There's tom brady who's going to be In
The Pro football Hall of fame, one day And There's.
Ken stabler Nothing Against, ken stabler who probably would have
been my favorite PLAYER had i been old enough to.
Watch play He Ain't. Tom Brady so i've always been

(01:11:40):
A big Hall of. Fame guy it's, A museum So
Put pete, rose In Put roger, clemens In Put barry.
Bonds in and by, the way we've Seen The baseball
Hall of fame be a little bit more inclusive in
recent years because some players who had a hard time
getting in are. Now in, My Guy dave parker goes in,
this summer which.

Speaker 4 (01:11:59):
IS awesome i wish it would have been.

Speaker 5 (01:12:02):
YEARS ago i Hope the cobra is in good enough
shape to really enjoy it and make the most of.
The EXPERIENCE and i will be rooting like hell for
him on induction day to have a.

Speaker 4 (01:12:11):
Great day.

Speaker 10 (01:12:14):
IS He?

Speaker 4 (01:12:15):
Roberta clemente no Is He?

Speaker 5 (01:12:17):
Hank aaron no is it coole as hell that he's
gonna get ten minutes to have his story told. In
cooper'stown one. Thousand percent That's what Halls of fame. Exists
for rings of honor are the same way with.

Speaker 4 (01:12:32):
Lower.

Speaker 5 (01:12:32):
STANDARDS now i made the case a few years Ago
When todd, Fraser retired todd should Be A red's Hall
of famer. One day only played for the team for
a handful, of years wasn't here very long, at all
but fan favorite authored an iconic moment in the Home
run derby put.

Speaker 4 (01:12:48):
Him in what's?

Speaker 11 (01:12:49):
The?

Speaker 4 (01:12:49):
Harm like what's? The harm.

Speaker 5 (01:12:53):
His induction can relive, that moment can reconnect with fans
who loved him when he. Played here it's, a museum
a place where you walk in and you can instantly
buy BOBBLEHEADS and. T shirts it's a place. Of commerce
it's a place to celebrate things that made fans. Feel
good so we talked about some Of the bengals. Graades

(01:13:14):
yesterday those. Are players none of them have ever Won
A super bowl In a. Bengals uniform most of those
guys who are up for consideration and who have gotten
in or will have eventually, gotten in authored moments that
have made people feel great and put together very. Good
careers put, them in put them up On the Ring.

(01:13:36):
Of honor If the bengals end up having sixty people
In their Ring.

Speaker 11 (01:13:40):
Of.

Speaker 5 (01:13:40):
Honor okay the other thing, in life stop worrying about
people who don't care.

Speaker 4 (01:13:47):
ABOUT you.

Speaker 5 (01:13:49):
I have developed over the last fifteen years of my
life and extraordinary ability to not give a riff about
what people who don't like me think.

Speaker 4 (01:13:57):
ABOUT me.

Speaker 5 (01:13:59):
A lot HAPPIER than i used. To Be A pittsburgh
steeler fan who doesn't care at all About The. Cincinnati
bengals why would you care about his or her opinion
Of your ring. Of honor it's not. For them let
them do theirs their way where they have all time
Greats Like lewis Lips And. Willie parker let them Do
their Hall of honor or whatever they, call it. Their

(01:14:20):
way let ours do ours. OUR way, i say put
as many players in, as possible because what's.

Speaker 1 (01:14:26):
The harm.

Speaker 4 (01:14:28):
Should there be some common?

Speaker 5 (01:14:29):
Sense criteria, of course we're Not Putting jackson carmen In
the Ring?

Speaker 4 (01:14:34):
Of honor could WE put i, Don't Know ted carris
one day maybe and played here. Very long but that's.
ALL right.

Speaker 5 (01:14:45):
I think some people get way too caught up in
the rigidity, of well here's what the criteria. Should be
and he this guy, not dude who cares like. You're celebrating,
you know players who made, fans happy authored, great moments
had really, good careers whether or not they one, shame like,
who oh, you know a fan from out of town
is gonna come laugh?

Speaker 6 (01:15:04):
At us?

Speaker 5 (01:15:05):
Who cares why stop being so concerned about what people
who don't care about. You think fan of other team
doesn't care about? My team WHY do i care about what.

Speaker 4 (01:15:14):
He thinks.

Speaker 5 (01:15:17):
Rings of Honor and halls of fame aren't meant to
be these. Sacred institutions there are things that are designed to,
sell tickets move merch and sell. Meatball subs ring of
honor ceremony takes place at halftime of a primetime game
when half the people in the stands. Are annihilated they've

(01:15:40):
been drinking. For hours we're supposed to pretend the ceremony
is some, sacred rite some. Sacred ritual.

Speaker 4 (01:15:45):
Come on.

Speaker 5 (01:15:48):
I've evolved immnseally over the last twenty years on, that
REGARD because i used to look At the Hall of,
fame as, oh boy you're this guy not quite. Good, enough,
okay fine they're gonna put this guy in and suddenly
Dilute the Hall. Of fame they're gonna put this dude's
name up in the stadium and suddenly Dilute the ring.
Of honor so that was kind of my, point yesterday
and it's my point, moving, forward like put these nine,

(01:16:11):
guys in and if architecturally you have to do something
to fit them, all in then s what is any
harm gonna be Done Putting max montoya In your ring?

Speaker 4 (01:16:20):
Of Honor.

Speaker 5 (01:16:23):
Joey vado should have his number. Nineteen retired you will
find folks who disagree. With, that, okay fine boycott. The
ballpark he'll still put forty thousand. Fans in i'll still
stand in applaud and remember all the awesome moments. He
created he's also gonna Get to cooperstown, one day and he.
Deserves it you gotta stop treating these things rings of

(01:16:43):
Honor and Hall of fame and things of. That Nature
and i'm a huge juicy. Basketball fan it drives me
nuts how obstinate people are about recognizing Former bear. Cat
greats you mean to tell me That Retiring steve logan's
jersey number is somehow gonna to Diminish What oscar. Robertson,
did no because anybody who knows anything about that program

(01:17:06):
could Tell You oscar robertson isn't a class. By, Himself
Also steve logan was really. Damn good god has stopped
taking some of these things so seriously and worrying about
what everybody else is.

Speaker 4 (01:17:19):
Gonna think.

Speaker 5 (01:17:22):
If they sell a sandwich shop in, your museum it's
not a. Sacred PLACE if i could Buy A teddy
bear in your museum's, gift store it's not a. Sacred
place AND if i have to put off waiting in
line to buy two more beers because, your hull your
ring of honor ceremony is gonna take five minutes at
halftime when everybody else, is schnookered it's not a. Sacred

Speaker 5 (01:18:40):
FOR listening i just went back and rewatched the Play
Where spencer steer got thrown out, at HOME and i
was talking about This with jeff. Last hour red's lost
today three to one Of. The, Pirates uh cincinnati just
feels like a lot of that air came out of
the balloon that was built up during that five game.
Winning streak they're. Off Tomorrow the cubs, are here big

(01:19:02):
series Starting on. Friday night you Just heard Brenneman and
jones talk, about that Along With. Will benson we'll get
to here in. A second it's the five. O'clock hour,
i'm sorry it's The mickelob ultra Five O'clock happy hour
thanks to our friends At Michelob ultra Superior, light beer,
superior Taste. MICHELOB ultra i am hoping to enjoy an

(01:19:22):
ice Cold mick ultra right around let's say ten forty,
five tonight depending on the outcome of the GAME. At msg,
BUT anyway i just went back and watched the play
in the sixth Inning Where spencer steer got thrown out
trying to Score On tyler. Stevenson's. Double jr house is
a third, base coach, and, LOOK man i can appreciate
your offensively not very good to, begin with And the

(01:19:44):
reds are not a great, offensive team and we're getting
we're getting further and further into the season where like
these mini bursts where they score twenty four runs aren't
as reflected in the overall metrics like they were just
a couple of. Weeks ago, BUT anyway i underst when
you're a team that isn't great at hitting the ball
out of, the ballpark and you've got a lot of

(01:20:05):
guys who frankly just, aren't hitting and you're Playing Without
will benson for, some reason and you're in a one
run game and it's the. MIDDLE innings i could understand,
BEING aggressive i could understand pushing the envelope a, little
Bit and i'm usually very much in favor of let's
force the defense to make. A play, i DID and
i saw it in, real time and, you know was

(01:20:27):
watching the game while getting ready for, the show and
so couldn't frankly give it the the typical SCRUTINY that.

Speaker 4 (01:20:32):
I MIGHT so i went back and watched here during.
The break.

Speaker 5 (01:20:37):
That's that's not. A send that's he had almost no
chance to score there from third base unless you have
a guy like me out in, left field Which, the
pirates as bad as, they. Are don't and so who
knows how the game unfolds if instead of making the
last out, at home the inn and continues second, and third.
Two outs very fair to think they're still not going.

(01:20:59):
To score but, you know. That's something during the five game,
winning streak we talked a lot about how they had
eliminated mistakes on, the bases they had eliminated giving away
outs on, the bases they had eliminated some.

Speaker 4 (01:21:09):
Defensive miscues they've got to win in.

Speaker 11 (01:21:11):
The.

Speaker 5 (01:21:12):
Margins today, You Know will benson got thrown out trying
To steal that didn't bother me nearly as Much as
steer getting thrown out, At home but neither can happen
in a tight game. Like, this unfortunately They did redslues three.
To one they're home For. The Cubs The will, benson
THING like i know it comes, from me Who Loves.
WILL benson i guess there's two different ways of looking.

(01:21:34):
At it number one like ride the hot. Hand, man
yes players need. Days Off will benson just got to the.
Big leagues dude's twenty six. Years old he gets an
off Day. On thursday they really had to sit them. Both,
GAMES now i know there's certainly gonna be folks who,

(01:21:56):
hear this who go, maybe, You, hey mo he's gonna.
Cool off the streak is bound. To, end yeah but
why not ride the wave before? It, crashes hey you,
know what he's not great. Against lefties, you know we
talk all the time about certain Players like. Matt McClain
has built up a lot of equity because he had

(01:22:16):
a good eighty nine games two years ago and now
he's like untouchable even though he can't hit a lick.
Right now don't you look At A will benson? To
go but he's made some adjustments at. The plate they've
paid dividends, against righty's let's see if they pay dividends.
Against lefties so. There's that there's also not using him
in the ninth inning, last night which didn't make any
sense to. Me whatsoever the argument Against Using will benson

(01:22:40):
in the ninth inning last night Is the reds would
have been ill equipped defensively in the bottom of THE
ninth i don't believe that for. A second and if
you think they would have been hamstrung because of their,
options available and They Have austin wins on. The, bench
look we All Love, austin wins then it's dumb to carry.
Three catchers and that's a roster. Construction thing but also
there's something About how i'm just Listening to Marty and
tracy Talk About, will benson who you know this past

(01:23:02):
week has been the biggest story on. The Team Will
Benton's Will Benton's will benson's importance is such that when
they put them on the bench for, two games they
can only score one run in.

Speaker 4 (01:23:16):
Two, games, WOW wow.

Speaker 5 (01:23:21):
I say and so we've been sifting through a lot
of that throughout the course of. THE afternoon i do
have a couple of pole questions poll questions on this
show are thanks to my friends and Yours At United.
Heartland insurance you hear me Talk About United heartland insurance
pretty much every. Single day IT'S because i believe in

(01:23:41):
what the Folks At United heartland. Insurance do one thing
they do is if you own a bar or, a
restaurant they have a program that can teach your bartenders
and service how to, you know navigate, you know liquor
and alcohol and doing, it responsibly, serving it selling, it
responsibly cutting. People off and this can definitely help your

(01:24:01):
business business with general liability and liquor liability pricing and
can help you out with. Insurance companies learn more about
THIS at uhi ins. Dot com two of them Today

(01:24:21):
baffling are understandable And The Bengals schamar stewart contract language
thing silly By the bengals or not silly By. The
bengals vote Now at Moeger. On TWITTER keith i cannot
thank you enough for. Your patients YOU'RE on espn. Fifteen
thirty how are you, doing.

Speaker 7 (01:24:40):
Fine though love You. And tarn, great, Job guys. Thank,
You okay i'm going to piggyback on just what you
finished off on with the. Poll question benson, is baffling.
Very baffling you put your best players in there and
you just go at, This point i'm not worried, about
Analytics so i'm not worried about how he might feel
against the left. Handed pitcher get your best bets in

(01:25:02):
there and let, him.

Speaker 6 (01:25:04):
Hit or let him at least try give us.

Speaker 10 (01:25:07):
The, options yeah give that hitter.

Speaker 6 (01:25:09):
A chance i.

Speaker 4 (01:25:11):
GAVE them i gave them the benefit of.

Speaker 5 (01:25:13):
The doubt yesterday AFTERNOON when i saw the lineup, was
OUT and i assumed, And, feared okay maybe, There's something maybe,
there's tightness maybe he's not, feeling himself maybe he's sick.
Well something but to hear that he was available and
they gave him the, Day, off okay don't, like it.
But fine but to not use him in the ninth
inning of a one nothing game makes. Zero sense and

(01:25:33):
then to not play him today like he really needed
three consecutive days off with the off.

Speaker 7 (01:25:37):
Day tomorrow it's, you KNOW and i just hate the
harp on this because, you know it's since the sports.
In general we're in A, super bowl trying to win
the game of our, our lifetime and You Take joe
mixon now the, starting lineup the, last drive the most
important drive of your season Against, the rams and you

(01:25:59):
take you sit mix and for, what reason no one ever,
told me but it just. Has to it just has
that feel of this is since the this is since.
The sports and the other caller that was Talking about
ellie moving him down in, the LINEUP and i, you
know are you? KIDDING me, i mean the only guy

(01:26:20):
if he gets on base that has the chance of
scoring on a ground out or a flyout to deep,
center field he could tag it second. And score you
don't keep those runners off. The path you if you
let him move him down in. The lineup with, this
lineup he may not bat until the. Third inning and
then at least if you bat him lead off and,

(01:26:40):
he's struggling you'll seem hopefully twice by the.

Speaker 6 (01:26:43):
Third, inning yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:26:44):
We, were talking we. Were chances i'm sorry.

Speaker 5 (01:26:46):
To interruption we were talking about moving them out of the.
Three hole, for me that's not moving. HIM down i
STILL and I know friedel has done a decent job
in the. LEADOFF spot I Want Ellie dela cruz batting
first more. THAN anything i Just want ellie to. Hit
More but i'm not moving.

Speaker 7 (01:26:59):
Him, down yeah, oh okay well the caller was like
moving him out of the. THREE hole i wasn't, For sure.
I'm misunderstood but as far as, the aggression you do
reach a, Point though like, YOU know i coached little league,
years ago and you did reach a point where you,
just say, just run just keep running until the glove,
tags you.

Speaker 10 (01:27:19):
You know and that's the.

Speaker 7 (01:27:20):
Frustrating part we're all in watching, this stuff, you know
day and. Day out, you know one nothing you, get
freedom a triple lead, off trifle, no oubts and he
gets stranded. AT third, i mean, you know why not
just try to go for the inside, the parker, you
know and just if, you get if you get in a,

(01:27:40):
rundown hill that's more exciting than watching three guys, you
know whisp behind you or not not. Advance YOU but
i would rather see a rundown at least. It's exciting
the other thing is when you were talking About the Hall, Of,
fame hey the marketing department AT, the Redsms The golden
opportunity this is the thirtieth anniversary of our last playoff

(01:28:03):
win nineteen, ninety five, Twenty Five Davy Johnson. BOBBLEHEAD night
i don't think it's on, the, schedule no but he
was the last manager to win a playoff game for,
this team not only win a, playoff game but Sweep.

Speaker 6 (01:28:19):
The dodgers. You did fun fact for everyone. Out there
and you know what you might.

Speaker 5 (01:28:22):
Not Remember As davy johnson hung it up as manager
Of the nationals maybe ten, YEARS ago i think, twenty
fourteen and his last Game as nationals Manager, in cincinnati
which it might have Been, in august they presented him.
WITH something i don't remember what it, was SPECIFICALLY but
I Remember walt jocket he, Was Involved bob castelini, was
involved and there was a Really nice it. Wasn't extravagant

(01:28:47):
you probably had to pay attention to really see what was,
going on but they did honor him before what ended
up being his last Game in cincinnati as. A manager
he announced during that season he was going to hang,
it up and they recognized him for what he did
in ninety four and, ninety five recognized him as at
the time and still the most recent manager to be
With the reds when they advance in. The POSTSEASON and

(01:29:08):
i thought that was really. WELL done i thought that
was well done. And appropriate but if they Did A davy,
Johnson bobblehead i'd be all.

Speaker 7 (01:29:14):
About, it YEAH because I, Mean bristol bristol got elected
in twenty eighteen Into the Hall of fame as the.

Speaker 6 (01:29:22):
LAST manager i.

Speaker 7 (01:29:23):
Think so, But Yeah, DAVY johnson i mean it's starting to.

Speaker 3 (01:29:27):
Look more and.

Speaker 7 (01:29:27):
MORE prevalent, i mean, you know now that we're into
our thirty years of. A, win.

Speaker 6 (01:29:34):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:29:35):
Why not and then as far.

Speaker 7 (01:29:37):
As the target trade trade target, wishless bucket How About
tyler Sodastrom or soderstrom From. The A's the a's are
known to part with some of their better players if,
they get, you know talented minor leaguers. In return and
he's a left handed back who's seventy. Ten homers we

(01:29:59):
could use the. First basement we, really could an actual,
FIRST basement a left handed stick that would maybe Park
behind ellie in the, three HOLE because i don't Know,
AFTER ellie, i mean who really? SHAKES you, i mean
and then it's it's in their. PRICE range i mean
it would have.

Speaker 6 (01:30:16):
To be it would have.

Speaker 5 (01:30:17):
To be well and under team control. FOR years, I
MEAN i i think he's years away from from. Arbitration
eligibility yeah he's.

Speaker 6 (01:30:26):
Twenty, three yeah he's.

Speaker 7 (01:30:27):
Twenty three And the a's are known to part with
talent as long as they get really nice prospects. In
RETURN now i don't know what prospects, we, have Yeah
but i'd rather see him go To the a's than
burn their, arms out, you KNOW trickle a and, you
KNOW double a and possibly get us a hitter up
here while we still are technically. NOT eliminated i mean

(01:30:49):
we're still we're still about four or five. GAMES back
i think got The cub series, coming up which that
could get that could erase that in. A hurry but,
you know, each day, each week each month that, goes
by we find ourselves, still hope, and man we're gonna
crest this five. Hundred man we're, right, yeah yeah, right
there and it's just here we, are, again right and,

(01:31:13):
it's like, you know maybe get this guy from, the eights,
YOU know, i mean YOU know, I would i would
at least rather see him try well in another young batman.

Speaker 3 (01:31:21):
Here that's been.

Speaker 7 (01:31:22):
PROVEN himself i don't know if they would even part.
With me that's, the thing because they're GONNA be, i Think.
MOVE vegas i think.

Speaker 4 (01:31:30):
SO here's i guess here's.

Speaker 5 (01:31:31):
The issue you're, YOU'RE right, i mean sign me up
for a twenty three year old first baseman with pop
who you have under team control for the rest of.
The decade, that said he's like one Of two oakland.
Two a's i'm gonna Call. Him oakland he is one
Of two oakland starters who are. Twenty THREE and i
do wonder if and you saw this a little bit.

(01:31:51):
This offseason they did spend some money, this offseason so
much so that, to me it was even more insulting
to the Fans of oakland because they just completely alienated
that fan base while they.

Speaker 4 (01:32:01):
Were there AND so i wonder if THEY are.

Speaker 5 (01:32:04):
I, don't know taking a second look at their typical philosophies, And,
go okay we. Are moving we are going to end Up.
In vegas we do need to start harnessing and keeping our,
young Talent And tyler sadistrom would be one of those
players that they would want to. Build around but it
doesn't hurt it certainly doesn't hurt.

Speaker 7 (01:32:21):
The, CALL yeah i would, you Know And. Nick crawl
this is. FREE advice, i mean you don't have to
pay me for the consult just, you know at least make.
The call at least make the called open if you,
haven't already or. The, athletics yeah and just remember since
it could. Be worse we could be eight and forty
Like The Colorado.

Speaker 4 (01:32:39):
Rocken MAN but i.

Speaker 5 (01:32:42):
GOT it i got one other thing, for you because

Speaker 10 (01:38:34):
Thank. YOU mom i like to start With the reds
a little. Bit here, we'll talk, you know talk. About,
frustration okay we Pick Up. Austin hayes yeah, He yeah
well the oil got rid of him for. A reason
he gets hurt, a lot So the reds pick. Him
up when, He, plays yeah he's. Doing great but bottom

(01:38:55):
line is You're picking this doesn't make sense to me
if you know you're picking up a guy and his
propensity to be hurt, and boy he's help when. He
plays but what if you do make the wild card
playoff out? That, handstring no you don't, Do That red.
That's stupid that just shows desperation, To me, WELL desperation i.

Speaker 5 (01:39:19):
DON'T know, I mean i don't have a problem with
them Getting Getting austin hayes for four million dollars a
guy twenty nine, years old despite his. INJURY history i
don't have a problem with that. AT all i have
a problem without having a backup plan in case he
gets Hurt Like austin. Hayes Was austin hayes was worth
a flyer and you, can't, go well we're worried that
he might not be able to play in, the postseason

(01:39:40):
like get, there First and i'm certainly wondering what the
next leg issue is going. To BE but i don't
have an issue With Signing, austin hayes and when he has,
been healthy he's. Been fine my, issue is and we
expressed this When the reds were, really struggling was that
the backup outfield plan involved Guys Like jacob Hurdabies And.

(01:40:01):
Blake dunn Now See Trent, rose grants who is the
outstanding Writer For the athletic who Covers, the reds was
doing a. Mail bag he did a two part, mail
BAG and i think in, part one which CAME out
i believe over, the weekend kind of highlighted how few
legitimate outfield options there were and how few really good
outfielders there are in. The sport, that said it just

(01:40:24):
felt to me at the time that when They Acquired,
austin hayes we were still wondering about the depth in,
the outfield and that came back and hurt Them When
austin hayes ended up. Getting hurt but in terms of,
GETTING him i have no problem with. That whatsoever and.

Speaker 10 (01:40:41):
In the, Catching, job tyler let me, tell you it
looks Like mister trevignho has Pull Of wally pip. On
you possibly first, of all another guy that's hurt all.
The time travigno has been way beyond what we thought he. Could.
Be yeah plus is the ONLY catcher i can think

(01:41:02):
of in history that was six foot four, or five
which is not an ideal hypeer a catcher at All Was,
carlton FISK who i still hate. His guts remember that
That clip he's waving, it all hit it. Out down
it cleared the poll by one point, three Inches and

(01:41:23):
i'm the hero and Then the red beat.

Speaker 5 (01:41:25):
Him, There, Look tyler stevenson was really good last year
and the last two years did a good job of.
Staying healthy he was not able to do that, this
year and he hasn't. BEEN productive i am very conflicted
as to what they should do long Term With. Tyler,
stevenson uh and like he could do something about that

(01:41:48):
based on, you know his his production. This year but, you're,
Right Man jose travino has been a, terrific pickup and
since he came off the, Injury List tyler stevenson has
barely contributed. At ALL and I think travinia is a
better defensive catcher, This year he's been. BETTER offensively i
Don't think stevenson hits enough to play him at. First
base i'm not sure he hits enough to BE. THE

(01:42:10):
dh i don't know what you do. With him, that
said it's not like the last two years he got hurt.
A bunch. He didn't and it's not like last year he.
Wasn't productive. He was he is among a long list of,
players that relative to what reasonable expectations were coming into,
the season have. Dramatically, underperformed yeah not a lot of

(01:42:32):
longevity with a lot of.

Speaker 10 (01:42:33):
These young guys think that. THEY have i don't. Get
it the other THING is i wanted to kind OF
pick atchi a little. Bit worse you Said the age spent. Some,
money Listen the ages have a seventy five million. Dollar
payroll they're. Twenty eight the only teams least Are The
white sowx And. The marlins that's spent less Money the
reds of. Twenty SEVEN but I thought i heard you

(01:42:53):
say they went out and spent some money in. Free
agency they couldn't have spent much.

Speaker 4 (01:42:56):
A lot more than they. Usually, do yeah.

Speaker 10 (01:42:59):
Well they i'd have to look it up that they couldn't,
have been like what forty five millions couldn't?

Speaker 6 (01:43:05):
HAVE been, i, mean no.

Speaker 5 (01:43:06):
They didn't they didn't exactly spend Like The New. York
YANKEES but i mean They Signed, luisa marino They Signed,
Gino Rochella. JOSE urius i mean they went And Got.
ALEX wood i mean they they typically don't. Spend anything
they did spend.

Speaker 10 (01:43:24):
A little pintendo says a lot about their pont system
really that they can still somehow be competitive in the
big picture over. THE years, i know you. Gotta go i'm.
ALWAYS okay i wanted to get TO the nba real
quick if you. Let me but are you one more
question About?

Speaker 6 (01:43:43):
THE?

Speaker 10 (01:43:43):
Reds, mo yeah you, really think because we'll just keep
doing this. EVERY year i don't have to win. This year,
you know we get to five hundred we get there's all.
This stuff do you think we ultimately it doesn't matter
if it's realistic that we can get a good, New
owner but do you think that's ultimately the only thing
that will change.

Speaker 4 (01:44:01):
THIS team i don't know if it's the. Only, THING no, i, mean.

Speaker 6 (01:44:11):
Well? What?

Speaker 4 (01:44:12):
ELSE well i think if they do a better job of.

Speaker 5 (01:44:17):
Keeping the pipeline full of big league talent and not just,
pitching talent and continue to crank out players that can
contribute immediately once they get to the, big leagues or start.
Doing that, you KNOW when i think of the last
somewhat extended period of, RED success i think of that
stretch of time between two thousand and seven and, twenty
thirteen where there's a pretty steady flow every single year

(01:44:41):
of guys who through their system ended, up contributing in
some cases, almost immediately in some, cases immediately and in,
many cases, you know even if it took, a while,
ended up, you know contributing for quite, a while and
then when that, dried up the team ended up being
really bad for a. Long, time obviously they have some
homegrown players who are, up now they're very. PITCHING heavy

(01:45:04):
i think that changes Once, the reds, you know not
the First time i've used, this example but for years
we would hear About The, cardinal way And The cardinal
way was pretty much about the pipeline is, always full
and there's a steady stream of guys who come through
their system get to the, big leagues and they help
in the, short term and many of them are worth
building around in a.

Speaker 4 (01:45:23):
Long term can can you do that under?

Speaker 6 (01:45:26):
Current?

Speaker 4 (01:45:26):
OWNERSHIP yeah i think.

Speaker 5 (01:45:28):
You can it's a matter of do they and do
they have the right baseball people in place to enjoy that.
That happens but you start by you start by. Doing
THAT do i believe that there is a scenario where
baseball's economic structure changes at least slightly and that helps
out a team Like.

Speaker 8 (01:45:47):
The.

Speaker 4 (01:45:47):
Reds Sure although i'm not holding, MY breath.

Speaker 10 (01:45:53):
I want to get under your skin a little bit
About this. Indiana, game yeah, Go Ahead. Tarn tarren are?

Speaker 4 (01:46:01):
You Listening tarn tarn is rooting For.

Speaker 10 (01:46:03):

That good their their fight song Is That gary Glitter
song Rock And roll part two that you heard?

Speaker 10 (01:46:30):
It said all it says IS when i, googled it
all it said.

Speaker 5 (01:46:33):
Was why why do we have to? Play that why
do we have to play that on? This show this
IS a prox show THIS so i can.

Speaker 10 (01:46:40):
Bother you that's just the Same reason i'm looking at
the roster obi top and one of your Favorite players
i'm sure from D, d, J, McConnell, Pascals ACoM, Jerris, Walker,
Burton Mahurt matt hurn is really a pretty. Good, ballplayer

(01:47:03):
Uh And miles turner has been unbelievable. In them hearts
off the charts when he when he when he needs
to be, and uh the other what's the other? Kid's Name.

Speaker 4 (01:47:13):
Tyrese halliburn's?

Speaker 10 (01:47:14):
Pretty, good, YEAH yeah i kind of we, assume that
But Then aaron aaron is.

Speaker 5 (01:47:21):
Pretty good, go ahead there's there's. Your music Its It's
Gary glitter Rock And roll. Part two, go ahead, Go, ahead.

Speaker 9 (01:47:29):
Mike is it is it a?

Speaker 10 (01:47:31):
Stupid song if, it is.

Speaker 5 (01:47:33):
We don't have a ton of time to be taking requests?
For music is there? Anything Else and i'll tell YOU
how i feel about the.

Speaker 4 (01:47:39):
Series? Objectively?

Speaker 10 (01:47:41):
Okay uh Does does benson play like he's about six five?

Speaker 6 (01:47:49):
To you or?

Speaker 10 (01:47:50):
Six Six?

Speaker 4 (01:47:51):
Will?

Speaker 10 (01:47:52):
BENSON yeah i know what his heights Is Not, Will benson.
I'm sorry the point guards are. The knicks.

Speaker 4 (01:47:59):
You, Go Jalen, Jalen Brunson.

Speaker 10 (01:48:02):
Jalen bnson. Benson brush do you?

Speaker 5 (01:48:05):
Know?

Speaker 4 (01:48:05):
Who jalen do you?

Speaker 5 (01:48:07):
Know Who jalen brunson reminds Me Of mike it's got
to be reminds Me Of Bearcat Great. Steve, LOGAN no
i don't care about. Which hand i'm talking, about craftiness
ability to, take contact ability, to score score in the
trees with bigger guys, around you ability to get to

(01:48:28):
the free throw line and make out. Side shots he
reminds me of a, more Polished Taller. STEVE LOGAN i
i will tell. You this my Heart, says, nixon seven
my Head says pacers.

Speaker 11 (01:48:40):
And.

Speaker 5 (01:48:40):
Six uh here's what this series comes. Down to indiana
will score. In transition they will score at a. Fast
pace do they score in the? Half court that's.

Speaker 14 (01:48:51):
The.

Speaker 5 (01:48:51):
Question if if the answer, is yes they win this
series because if You're, the knicks you Can't stop indiana.
In transition so when the game does, slow down when
they are running half, court sets you have to. Get
stops if, they do they've got. A chance if, They
don't indiana, will win and. Maybe decisively Number Two new
York beat boston in large part because of the celtics

(01:49:13):
inability to. Make threes but it wasn't just that they.
Made frees it was that they didn't rebound their. Own
Missus the knicks were great on. The glass they have
an Advantage over indiana on. The glass they're gonna have
to take advantage of. That advantage And the knicks starters
are gonna have to be Better than indiana starters Because
the pacers play. Eleven guys and if this turns into

(01:49:34):
a series that's all, about depth which last, Year's was indiana.

Speaker 4 (01:49:38):
Will win if this ends up being a series that.

Speaker 5 (01:49:41):
Is called closely because of fouls and now the benches,
Are tested. Indiana WINS so i Think the pacers check
a lot. OF boxes i think if you're looking at,
this objectively, you know, to me you could kind of
throw away. Home court indiana Won At Madison square Garden in,
game seven. Last year Although the knicks were, beaten Up

(01:50:02):
the knicks have not been grated at home in. The
postseason And the pacers can play multiple, ways OFFENSIVELY and
i don't Think the knicks can and defensively they've had
too many lapses in. The postseason Heart, says nicks and
seven Head says pacers In, SIX mike i, gotta run.

Speaker 10 (01:50:19):
They gotta, control pace but they still got to get.

Speaker 4 (01:50:21):

should just.

Speaker 1 (01:53:41):

Speaker 6 (01:53:42):

Speaker 10 (01:53:55):
Are?

Speaker 4 (01:53:55):
WE waiting i think it was.

Speaker 5 (01:53:57):
A travesty he wasn't put in. LAST year i don't
even know Why the bengals left it up. To voters
they just should have said this man was drafted by
our organization fifty. Years ago he has been, a player
a broadcaster. And ambassador he's In the Ring. Of honor
why that wasn't done last is the easiest layup of.
All time it still baffles me why that.

Speaker 6 (01:54:17):
Didn't HAPPEN and i WAS if i, WAS him i start.
GETTING mad.

Speaker 4 (01:54:26):
I don't. Get it, you know we bring up what
other teams would.

Speaker 5 (01:54:30):
HAVE done i cannot Imagine that there Are Many dave
laphams who. Have played dave was a, good player, versatile
player played In The, super bowl and then, you know
worked as, a BROADCASTER and I, know dave, you know
spent a season IN the usfl and, all that but
for the better part of a half century is, working for,

(01:54:51):
playing for and representing. Your franchise and you don't take
last year as an opportunity to put him In the ring.

Speaker 4 (01:54:57):
Of honor that makes and a.

Speaker 5 (01:55:00):
Beloved figure i've never Heard of bengals fan. GO man
i don't, Like That dave. LAPHAM guy i thought it
was a shame that voters didn't vote, for HIM but
i don't think it should have been in the hand of.

Speaker 4 (01:55:09):
The voters vote of the voters. Last, YEAR no i agree.

Speaker 6 (01:55:13):
Hundred Percent and i've got another, One Too. Tony, pike
yes why is he not In UC's Ring. Of honor
they've got two kickers In their Ring of Honor And
tony pike is not. In there. That's ridiculous He he's
he's the one that KICKSTARTED the uc. Football.

Speaker 4 (01:55:31):
PROGRAM yeah i don't with.

Speaker 6 (01:55:33):
His teammates with his, teammates OBVIOUSLY but.

Speaker 5 (01:55:36):
I, MEAN LOOK I i you're not going to find
anybody who's going to bang the Drum For tony pike more.
Than me, you know he's not In The Schools athletic
Hall of. Fame individually he is as a member of
the two thousand and, nine team, and look he's obviously
a friend, of Mine So i'm i'm, Partial here but
the one that did it for me was when They

(01:55:58):
Put shaq. Washington Up and shaq was a, terrific player
but he was In the Ring OF honor i think
like a year after. He graduated there are a lot
of guys from that eight and nine era that merit
consideration Both for Ring of honor and For the Hall,
of Fame and tony is obviously very close to the

(01:56:18):
top of. THAT list i don't. Know why and what's interesting,
IS like i don't know what the. Criteria is it's
like in men's basketball with their retired. Jersey, numbers uh
it's not where you have to have won a. National
championship it's not where you have to have been the
player of. The year there's no hard. Set CRITERIA and

(01:56:38):
i believe the same Applies to Ring of HONOR at.
U see i certainly believe there's a lot of players
who have played there over the last twenty years that
would deserve such. An honor you will not get any
argument for me if you want to start It With. Tony,
pike YEAH and i.

Speaker 6 (01:56:53):
Think it can you imagine. The hoopla it could be
if They put Pike.

Speaker 4 (01:56:58):
And bend can you imagine?

Speaker 5 (01:57:01):
How obnoxious can you imagine how obnoxious the show that's
on before me would be if they, DID.

Speaker 6 (01:57:05):
That i would listen every minute, of it you and.

Speaker 4 (01:57:09):
ME both i think.

Speaker 5 (01:57:11):
It'd be, You KNOW tony i think had a better
just overall Career, Than arman but those two guys authored
still the GREATEST moment i would ARGUE in uc.

Speaker 4 (01:57:20):
Athletics.

Speaker 5 (01:57:20):

That up i'm.

Speaker 4 (01:57:31):
