He's a PESPN fifteen thirty Stone Statements, Meet your New Bengals. The Cincinnati
Bengals select Stone Statements. Make astatement with your Countarie tops presented by Riverside
Electric. Never feel Powerless. No, here's moech With their fourth round pick
in the twenty twenty four NFL Draft, the Bengals went local, taking fairfield
(00:24):
product Eric All from Iowa. Allis a tight end who started his college
career at Michigan before going to Iowa, where he led the Hawkeyes and receiving
last year despite missing the last sevengames. All is a very good athlete
and a smooth route runner who hasgreat ball tracking ability. He's also a
willing blocker, but scouts say heneeds to be more physical in that part
(00:45):
of the game, and he's hadissues dropping the football. All had a
herniated disc that cuts short his finalseason at Michigan and a knee injury that
ended his season last year in Iowa, but when he was on the field
at both schools, he was productiveand versatile. Meet Bengal tight end Eric
al Mo has more on ESPN fifteenthirty, the official home of the Bengals.
(01:07):
All Right, What's up? Connectfor noon, Mullegger, ESPN fifteen
thirty, Thank you for listening.Hopefully. Two things. A you got
through last night and the overnight hoursbecause it was rough from a weather perspective.
And B they're having a terrific Wednesdayafternoon. We were loaded today.
We have a lot to talk about. News that went down came down about.
(01:29):
But thirty to thirty five minutes ago, Reds in the throws, as
we say, of a six gamelosing skid, or as a normal person
might say, at the Reds havelost six straight games. The bad news
just keeps coming. Getting set toplay the Diamondbacks tonight, Christian and Carnassi
and Strand has been placed on theten day injured list with what is being
(01:53):
called a right ull nurse styloid fracture. Let me say that again for you,
a right ulner styloid fracture. Idon't know that I have ever heard
of that sort of injury. Nowhere's what we do know. Eleven days
ago Christian and Karnassi on Strand washit by a pitch and in the course
(02:17):
of examining his hand, a previousa previously undetected I guess undiagnosed fracture was
discovered. Trying to put this inthe cleanest language possible, so they basically
discovered a prior hand fracture, butthe diagnosis of what happened when he got
(02:42):
hit by the pitch was that thatparticular incident didn't cause a fracture. Okay,
So ces misses a couple of games. The Reds play shorthanded late last
week, shorthanded at the end ofthe most recently completed road trip. Cees
(03:05):
then comes back and he played inevery game over the weekend against the Baltimore
Orioles. He played in the gamelast night, He finished the game last
night. In the four games sincehe has come back, he has kind
of like he has been all seasonlong, and not very productive, two
for fourteen in those four games. And today we find out that he is
(03:30):
going on the injured list with aright owner styloid fracture. Ces done for
a while. How long, whatthe specifics are, we don't know.
David Bell will talk a little bitlater on and we'll have that for you
now. In response to this,Mike Ford has been added to the team.
(03:52):
Mike Ford signs a one year majorleague contract. Now the Mike Ford
saga has kin have taken on alife of its own. Mike Ford was
with the Reds during spring training. He on a minor league deal, he
opted out of it, then endsup rejoining the Reds organization, goes to
(04:15):
Louisville and rakes. In twenty twogames with the Louisville Bats, he batted
three to twenty five, He slashedfour, twelve and five ninety. He
had ten extra base hits, hewalked twelve times, and he crushed lefties
despite the fact that he's a lefthanded hitter hitting three seventy. Mike Ford
(04:36):
has been added to the team.A guy who most recently played in the
big leagues last year with the SeattleMariners, who last season his final two
home runs of the year came againstthe Reds. As a big league hitter,
he has a career batting average oftwo to eleven. He is homered
thirty six times in just over sevenhundred played. A peer ass Mike Ford,
(05:00):
who's a thirty one years old.He has primarily played first base and
DHD. For what it's worth,he has also pitched in for hopeless causes.
So Mike Ford up, Christian Incarnacionstrand down. Now there's legitimate questions
here. I'm not one for.I don't love. One of my least
(05:20):
favorite tropes is let's hammer the medicalstaff, Let's hammer the training staff.
I'm barely qualified to talk about baseball. I'm not qualified to dive into the
ins and outs of what the medicalstaff is doing or should be doing,
or what the training staff is doingor should be doing. I hate it
when there's an accumulation of injuries andwe blame the training staff for the medical
(05:43):
staff. I don't blame my doctorwhen I get a cold. My daughter
just got done with a three daystomach bug. I don't blame her pediatrician.
Stuff happens. I don't love doingthat. At the same time,
boy, this just feels weird. Can we call it that weird? He
gets hit eleven days ago, hegets hit. When he gets hit,
(06:09):
they look at his hand. Nofracture, well except for this one that
he suffered at some other time thathe was apparently unaware of. He misses
a couple of games, they playwoefully shorthanded, basically played with twenty three
guys in San Diego, comes back, doesn't play well, plays in four
(06:29):
games, and then a week anda half after getting hit, now he
goes on the injured list. I'mnot gonna I'm not gonna go as far
as to say that they've screwed thisup, but boy, there are very
good questions about how they handle this. For what it's worth, if you're
(06:51):
wondering about the clinical nature of theinjury, an owner's siloid fracture is a
common type of wrist injury involving theend of the bony part of your wrist.
I'm reading this from very Well Health. I'll assume that very Well Health
is reputable. We're gonna work toget a medical expert on with us today,
(07:14):
hopefully for Moorthosinci. Very Well Healthsays it often occurs with a distal
radius fracture. This injury doesn't usuallyrequire treatment, though if you also have
a distal radius fracture, you mayneed a cast or surgery. I have
no idea how long Christian in carnassion Strand is going to be out for.
I don't know. From a baseballperspective, well, this isn't good.
(07:40):
It's not good for Cees. Ceesis a developing player. He is
a guy who this time last yearwas playing a Triple A baseball he's twenty
four years old. This is aguy who has played fewer than one hundred
big league games. You're being veryfair if you wonder, for the purposes
of trying to win this year, does Ces deserve to be in the lineup
(08:01):
every single day. But from adevelopmental standpoint, him not getting a chance
to play, him not getting achance to hit, him not getting a
chance to be a part of theteam, him not getting a chance to
work on his skills, even ifit's just for a short amount of time,
those aren't That's not good, right. It's ideal that for his development
that Christian and Karnacion Strand otherwise knownas Cees is playing baseball. The best
(08:26):
way to get better at playing baseballis to play baseball, and at least
for a while Ces, maybe fora week and a half, I have
no idea, But at least fora while he's not going to play baseball.
So from a developmental standpoint, whichis part of what the Reds are
trying to do develop younger players, this is a bump in the road,
so to speak, from the standpointof getting this team, which is going
(08:50):
through a historically bad stretch offensively,We'll outline how historically bad they've been over
the last couple weeks in just afew minutes. But for a team that
it continued last night. Yes,they got the two home runs late,
that was a lost cause there werebullpen issues. We'll get to in a
bit. This team has now lostsix consecutive games. They have been unbelievably
(09:15):
bad offensively. There's no way tosugarcoat it unbelievably bad offensively from from that
standpoint, eh. I mean, let's be honest, there's not a soul
on this team right now who's swinginga good bet TJ. Friedel May his
return last night obviously didn't really helpthe team. I certainly do expect some
(09:39):
of these guys who are hitting verypoorly to hit a little bit better.
But you know, it's not likeCees was the guy with the only hot
bat in the lineup and now he'sgone Like he among many of his teammates
has been brutal recently. And Ihate picking on anyone player or talking about
any one guy. And there area handful of guys that I think you're
(10:01):
kind of willing to shrug your shouldersand go, Look, this is just
a part of being a young ballplayer. He's going to go through struggles.
He is still learning, as opposedto maybe somebody like a jam or Candelario
who's more established and who's well contributedalmost nothing but the impact on the team
right now. I gotta be honestwith you, this doesn't really move the
meter for me, because the dudewasn't hitting to begin with. Now it's
(10:24):
better off if he's playing. It'sbetter off if he's getting experience, getting
at bats, getting better, beingable to hit in the cage, all
that stuff. This is robbing himof the ability to do those things again
right now. We don't know forhow long. But to be honest with
you, you tell me we're swappingout Mike Ford for ces. Okay,
(10:48):
I mean, like, legitimately, there's nobody hitting on this team right now.
So we made fun last week ofnot Mike Ford and not even anybody
who wanted Mike Ford to be here. But we made fun last week of
the clamor for Mike Ford to jointhe team. And I think that was
mainly for me at least, areflection of just where the roster is and
(11:09):
what the bottom end of the rosterlooks like. That now, this season
that was supposed to be spent talkingabout Matt McClain and Noel ve Marte and
Spencer Steer and Elie de la Cruzand all these young guys. Now the
decision that has taken center stage iswhat are they gonna do with Mike Ford.
They had until Friday to add himto the roster or risk losing him.
(11:31):
They lost him. He was stillavailable as a free agent, so
they add him and Cees goes onthe injured list. But I mean,
like, legitimately, we found outthat the Reds had signed Mike Ford,
and my first thought was why notplaying tonight if you can, like legitimately,
why not With the way this teamis hitting, what do you got
(11:52):
to lose? What are they gonnado? Is Mike Ford gonna go oh
for four for you? Well,so is everybody else on this team almost
every single day for a while. So there's lots of different ways to look
at this. From Cees's perspective, this hurts from the perspective of the Reds
as they're currently constructed and as they'recurrently playing, this really doesn't do anything
(12:15):
for me. He wasn't hitting, they're not hitting. Let's try Mike Ford
from the standpoint of kind of trustingthe people who make decisions about which players
should be on the active roster andwhich players should be placed on the injured
list, and how we're gonna dealwith injury. This raises fair and legitimate
(12:39):
questions. Eleven days ago, theguy gets hit. Eleven days ago,
they discover a previously undiscovered hand fracture. He comes back, he plays,
and now he's not. I don'tknow how you could look at that as
anything other than just bizarre, weird, perhaps maybe even troubling. Meanwhile,
(13:07):
the Reds are gonna play baseball gametonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks on the heels
of another loss. That's six steight games. If you uh go on
social media, I'm on Twitter.By the way, thanks to our friends
at Delta Dental. Delta Dental isbuilding healthy, smart, vibrant communities for
all good at Delta dentaloh dot com. If you, if you look at
(13:33):
that particular app, if you insinuatethat, you know what, it would
be nice if the Reds would starthitting, you get yelled at. The
offensive woes continued last night and theyended up looking really bad for how they
handled the Sam mall situation. Thereis a lot to discuss, there's lots
of frustration. I'll let you getsome of the off your chest. Five
one three seven four nine fifteen thirtyeight six six seven O two three seven
(13:58):
seven six. This is bad newsanytime you have a player who is a
cornerstone of what you're trying to do. And I think Cees would qualify as
that, and that dude's gonna misstime. It ain't good. But at
the same time, the guy wasn'thitting, this team's not hitting. Does
(14:18):
it really matter right now? Fiveone three seven four nine, fifteen thirty
is our phone number. We havea lot of ground to cover. We
hope to hear from you today. Here till six on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports Station in thirty studios powered byGreater Cincinnatis roofing and exterior restoration experts Madwell
Restoration dot Com. Be ready forsevere weather. We certainly had a bunch
(14:41):
overnight with a Madewell pre inspection.Good to Madewell Restoration dot com. Uh
Five one three seven, four nine, fifteen thirty is our phone number.
So Christian and Karnassi on Strand isgoing on the the injured list. Uh,
this is weird. He's gotta he'sgotta fracture in his wrist. I
(15:03):
do I have to read the clinicalterm every single time. He's got a
fracture in his risk. By theway, also, the Reds uh moved
Brandon Williamson to the sixty day injuredlist to clear the forty man roster spot
for Mike Ford, who is goingto be in in in uniform and available
to the Reds tonight as they tryto break a six game losing streak taking
(15:24):
on the Dbacks this evening. Wehave Mike Is this Mike Ford in a
scrum? Is he chatting with reportersdown there at GABP? Is that what
we have? Tarn, No,it's not a scrum. So one on
one convinced that that microphone, theref use has never plowed up. So
we have we have Chris, wehave Mike Ford talking into a microphone that's
not turned on. Possibly it's justhim like at a press conference. Yes,
(15:48):
Mike Ford. Twice they have turneddown the chance to sign him.
Now his acquisition merits a press conference. Okay, how long is this hold
things? About four and a half. I'll cut it off at some point.
All right, well give me,give me a little bit of mic
Ford chatting with people at GABP justa short while ago, ultimately got you
(16:11):
here. Yeah, I mean theplan for today was to go fishing with
my dad back home now, butyou know, I think we're both in
line of the line of thinking thatthis is a better place to be.
So it's it's great to be back. Hoping the third time is the charm
on this one, and you know, I'm just happy to be here.
(16:33):
This is where I wanted it tobe, you know, from the off
season. Yeah, I really likedthe guys and love the coaching staff,
so that really I do effect Wherewere you when? When did g call
New Jersey And around ten thirty lastnight? I've done a quick flight this
morning. There you go. Didyou like what was next for you if
(16:56):
you didn't get this college? Whatthey all? Right? Yeah, Yeah,
we were, uh, you know, we were talking about our options.
We had teams interested, whether itbe here or or abroad, and
we were just kind of waiting ona few to to see where they went.
And obviously, you know, kindof pass this opportunity. So came
(17:17):
back here and really happen. SureWe've got a lot of games under your
belt major leagues, but for fans, it it may I know a lot
about you just talking about your gameand kind of what you can read.
Ah, well, I've I've beendefinitely labeled as a bet first guy.
I think, you know, Uh, that's what I really enjoyed doing.
(17:37):
I like working working counts. Ilike working through a BET. I pitched
when when when I was in college, so I I just kind of like
to work along with the pitcher andtry to have an intelligent evet provide some
power. And I think, uh, you know, with some swing changes
from the off season, Uh,it kind of carried over into spring training
(17:59):
and then and then triple A startingto hit the hole the other way,
just just trying to get back tobeing a complete hitter. And in the
past two months has kind of provedto me to just keep doing what I'm
doing and trusting in that. Andthat's that's a lot of confidence. Did
you make big changes or just minorchanges or yeah, I mean, you
know, obviously the game adjusts toyou all the time, especially at this
(18:23):
level. Uh, you know,no no other level really compares to discounting
that they do on you. Hearobviously. Uh, you know, players
are preadmately proper here and can executea lot better. So it was some
changes to cover some holes in whatI evaluated as holes and it's worked.
(18:47):
You know, just trying to besimple and taking a single the guy,
you know, instead of the guy'sCorgner position, instead of trying to hit
a home run. That does alot for you. I can kind of
calm you down. And it wasmostly based on swing path and just trying
to get to Pops bib involves justbe more competitive, tarn what is closer
(19:11):
the distance between where I'm sitting rightnow in the gas station across the street,
or Mike Ford to that microphone easilythe gas station between you. So
the audio left a little bit tobe desired. But that's okay. Who
do we steal that from? Whogave that to us? That was from
the Rigs. That's from the Reds. All right. So there's Mike Ford.
(19:33):
Did I hear him say that heis considered a bat first guy?
Did you hear that? Yes,that's what we say. He's a bat
first guy. His career batting averageis two eleven. How bad is his
glove? Now? To be fair, last season, Mike Ford did hit
(19:55):
sixteen home runs. In fact, his OPS was a more than respectable seven
ninety eight. He did that ineighty three games with the Seattle Mariners,
so he did have some poppies aleft handed batter. Batting average is a
very limited metric when it comes todetermining a hitter's effectiveness. If if Mike
(20:15):
Ford puts up an OPS of sevenninety eight, whether it's in a full
time role or a part time role, dude, I'll take that. And
you know, as has been coveredextensively, he was terrific during the spring.
He was, I mean for theReds. He was hit four fifty
five, hit three homers, andthirty five played appearances, to which one
was spring training stats. But hedid put up really good spring training numbers.
(20:40):
And then after the back and forthof all right, do I accept
a spot in Louisville, he goesto Louisville and for the bats, he
put up some very good numbers.Batted to ninety seven, an ops of
nine to twenty. He had sixhomers, which at the time was second
on the Louisville bats behind Connor Caple, who got caught up up yesterday.
(21:00):
And so to Mike Ford's credit, you know, he did put up big
power numbers last year, and hehad a very good spring training for the
Reds and he was terrific in Louisvilleand hit well, and so maybe the
adjustments that you partially heard him talkabout there are starting to pay off.
Like, I'm all for any solutionright now. Even before we knew that
(21:22):
ces was going to go on theinjury list, which is an issue that's
tied to this, but to mealmost separate, Like late last week when
we were kind of making fun ofthe obsession with Mike Ford being added to
the roster, I was all forbringing him up because Mike Ford or Nick
Martini. Can Mike Ford be asbad as Nick Martini? Probably can he
(21:45):
be as bad as Cees was?And look like there's two different issues with
him specifically, Do I think there'sa very good chance that Cees ends up
being a quality big league hitter witha lot of power? Of course,
like why would you give up onthat suggestion. He's played few than a
hun big league games, put upkiller numbers when he got called up last
year, hit a bunch of homeruns in September, Obviously, good minor
(22:06):
league profile, like, I'll takeall the cees long term stock you have,
but that's long term. In theshort term, they have nobody who's
hitting, and so I'm up fortrying anything, legitimately anything. If the
strategy tonight is all the batters aregonna hold the bats upside down, I'm
(22:29):
in. If it's picked the namesout of a hat for the batting water,
I'm in. If it's given HunterGreen in that batter too, I'm
up for trying anything this. Theyare historically bad right now. Historically bad.
(22:49):
There's an outstanding website that I've referencedto a whole bunch of times Red's
content plus and one of the proprietors, one of the main contributors, as
a guy who has been kind enoughto appear in our show before, Matt
Wilkes. Matt tweeted this out acouple of hours ago. The Red's current
(23:10):
OPS over their last eleven games isthe lowest for any eleven game stretch in
fifty three years. You have togo back to nineteen seventy one. May
twenty fourth through June third, nineteenseventy one, the Reds team OPS was
(23:30):
for eighty one over their last elevengames for ninety not think about that,
because over the last ten years orso, the Reds have fielded some pretty
sorry offensive teams. They've never hadan eleven game stretch this bad. So
I hate to say this because Ihate it for Cees and I hate it
for his long term development. Butlike, for the purposes of winning tonight's
(23:53):
baseball game, let's try. Iknow he's not in the starting lineup,
let's try Mike Ford. And ifit means Mike Ford's on the team and
Cees for the time being, isnot like, okay, I'm for trying
anything anything. There's also the separateissue of wait a minute, he got
(24:14):
hit a week and a half ago, and he's just going on the injured
list now. Like one of thethings I wonder is I had they just
put him on the injured list aweek and a half ago, would he
already be healed? My guess isno. But I mean, just think
of that. Over the last tenor eleven days, they chose to play
shorthanded in three games on the roadtrip. Chose to play shorthanded not just
(24:40):
minus Cees, but other guys whoweren't healthy. Get him back. He
doesn't help, and now he goeson the injured list like I don't know,
man, I know him waylaid fora break, like they're historically bad
offensively, and so let's try.Let's try Mike Ford literally anything. I'll
literally try anything right now. Tarnand I were so desperate that we went
(25:06):
on chat GPT to see if AIhad any answers for the Reds offensive woes.
All right, it's twenty two awayfrom four o'clock. We will give
you tonight's starting lineup, which I'msure you have no access to, and
talk about something else that happened lastnight as well on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports station Cincinnati's on fifteen thirty. It's sixteen away from four o'clock sports headlines.
(25:37):
Ten minutes later, a service ofKelsey Chevrolet home of lifetime powertrain protection
and guaranteed credit approval from their familyto yours for life kelseyshev dot com.
I'm looking here on social media fromour buddy Charlie Clifford at Channel five WLWT
Channel five as watching their weather coveragelast night with the k Robin Allison Rodgers.
(26:03):
But Charlie says here per David Bell, the Reds manager. I'm sure
we'll have audio of this here momentarily, per David Bell, the Reds discovered
a new fracture in Christian and kasion Strand's right hand. It is tied
to the hit by pitch against theRangers. He is expected to miss four
(26:25):
to six weeks. Let's just workthrough the timeline here. On April the
twenty seventh, which was a Saturday, a Saturday game, April the twenty
seventh, Christian and karnasi on Strandleft the game after the seventh inning because
(26:49):
he was hit by a pitch. That was on April the twenty seventh.
On April the twenty eighth, theword from the red is X rays or
negative. There's no fracture, onlyevidence of an old one. He'll be
(27:10):
fine. That was on April thetwenty eighth. April twenty nine, April
thirty, and May one, theReds play an entire series shorthanded. Remember
had only twenty three guys. Padreshad twenty six, Reds had twenty three.
(27:33):
May three, four, five, and seven. There was an off
day of the sixth. Cees comesback and proceeds to not be very productive.
May eighth, oh uh yeah, actually, uh, there is a
new fracture. Yeah, so he'sgonna miss four to six weeks. This
(28:06):
isn't bizarre to anybody else, isit? I could I sent this out
on social media? Can we Icould do it again. We've gone from
ah, there's there's no fracture, but he fracture. Actually he does have
an old one. Can't figure outhow he suffered it how, but but
(28:29):
he's got an old one. Sowhat we're gonna do is we're not gonna
put him on the injured list. We're gonna play some games shorthanded. Okay,
yeah, that's we're gonna play withtwenty three guys. Put our manager
at a disadvantage. Basically, Ihave no bench. Cees's absence temporarily it's
gonna be a big reason why.But we're not gonna put him on the
(28:51):
injury There's no need to do that. By the way, Red's lost two
of those games, played three more. I'm sorry, no, no,
no four more because he played lastnight. Well, the player who they
then determined has a broken wrist.I mean, I've got an expert on
(29:22):
anything baseball medicine. I'm barely anexpert on getting dressed in the morning.
But does this give you a reallygood feeling about how well things are being
run right now? I mean, legitimately, I have open lines. Is
this Is this not even worthy ofcriticism? Is it worthy of at least
(29:48):
some scrutiny? And like poor DavidBell's the guy. David Bell is basically
the press secretary for the David Bell'snot putting the guy through a battery of
tests, one determining whether or nothe should be on the injured list,
Like, this isn't weird? Andmaybe the weirdness, or the sense of
(30:11):
weirdness gets amplified by the fact thatthe Reds are struggling right now, and
that's no one person's faults. Maybethis is something that we're a little bit
more willing to ignore or let slide. If the team is playing better,
that possibility certainly exists. But forgethow they're playing for a second. Forget
(30:37):
the fact that nobody else is hittingthis. This isn't weird. He's hit.
There's no fracture. It's an oldfracture. We're gonna play shorthanded.
Now he's gonna come back, playwith a broken wrist, not hit.
(30:57):
Oh, now he's got to missfour to six weeks. I I'm doing
this quite a while. Man,I've been doing this a long time.
I have a very very good trackrecord of rarely questioning things when they come
(31:19):
to when it comes to player health, the injured list, some of the
more procedural things that happen, I'musually pretty pretty open minded, pretty willing
to just kind of defer to them. I don't gratuitously criticize medical staffs.
(31:44):
I'm not even really doing that here. I don't gratuitously criticize the process.
If you have put me in aplace where I'm wondering what the bleep is
going on? You have a COMPLIsomething I mean like I get it all
the time. I get accused ofme an apologist for him. Right.
(32:05):
If you have this is me likeif a damn good track record of rarely
going down this road. If youhave put me in a place and again
like the Reds are losing and sothere's more frustration, I feel it,
and nobody's hitting in this whatever.Put this in a put this like eleven
(32:28):
eleven day stretch in a in avacuum and just walk through the timeline.
I cannot be the only person whofinds this to be bizarre. Your phone
calls are coming up in the nexthour. I promise five one three,
seven, four nine fifteen thirty eightsix six, seven oh two three seven
(32:52):
seven six. I'm way late.I have more to say. Eight from
four ESPN fifteen thirty visit us ata Cincinnati sports station. Thank you.
It's four oh three. Good afternoonon Mouleger. This is ESPN fifteen thirty.
I really do appreciate you listening.I've been an interesting first hour,
(33:15):
and you know what the I've justcalled this weird and bizarre, the Cees
situation. If you're just getting caughtup. The Reds first basement goes on
the injured list with basically a wristfracture that is related to the original injury
(33:35):
or being hit by a pitch.I should say back on April the twenty
seventh, and if you recall theword out of Texas the Reds were in
Arlington for that three game series againstthe Rangers, was well, this isn't
good and he might have to missa game or two. But actually it's
not fractured, but we uncovered anold fracture. We're not sure when the
old fracture was originally became a thing, but he's going to be And then
(34:00):
they played a bunch of games withoutthem willingly, and you might have argued
understandably playing shorthanded. And then Ceescomes back and like many of his teammates,
doesn't hit this weekend, the Redslose every game, and then suddenly,
I mean he was in the lineof last night, and then suddenly,
now he's got a fractured wrist andhe's gonna miss four to six weeks
(34:22):
according to David Bell, which isyou know, it's gonna take us to
the middle of June, maybe theend of June, if not even longer.
Mike Ford is up. That's beenlike an entirely different saga, and
so like, I'm gonna turn thingsover to you here in a second,
we have an online Twitter poll thatwe'll get to. This is just weird
(34:43):
to me, and the weirdness isamplified by, like, none of us
feel good about this team right now. I still hold the belief that as
an organization, some bright days areahead, and those bright days may happen
in twenty twenty four. It's it'sstill, as we say, very early,
(35:05):
but you know, a lot ofinjury news. The season got off
to a really sort of janky, uneven start with all the injuries. The
injuries, the impact of them, the suspension of Marte, the impact has
been felt for the entire year.Right now, they're hitting at a historically
bad pace, and it's everybody. It's everybody from players who you go,
(35:29):
you know what, they're still developing. Ces would fall under that category.
He's played less than one hundred bigleague games. It's it involves guys who
are a little bit more established.I kind of put Spencer Steer in that
mix, might be a little bitunfair, Jonathan India, Tyler Stevenson,
(35:50):
guys like Jamer Candelario and outside acquisition. That dude's not hitting at all.
He's been a big bust. Andthen you know that the low hanging fruit
your Santiago Espinall's and Luke Melee andNick Martini and Bubba Thompson. Those guys
are just not good offensive players.Malely brings a lot to the table defensively,
but those guys are just not goodoffensive player. It's everybody. Hell.
(36:15):
For as much fun as it waswatching Ellie for a few weeks,
it's it's been Ellie, it's beeneverybody, and so there's a lot of
frustration watching this team hit right now, and there's a lot of frustration watching
this team lose. Knowing the gauntletthat they're in the middle of is not
going to end anytime soon, Knowingthe division is a little bit better than
last year, and then the helplessnessof knowing that the cavalry is not coming.
(36:40):
This isn't a year ago where youcould you could talk about how mcclan's
gonna get here, and you knowon the mound, Abbot's gonna get here,
and Ellie's gonna get here, anddown the road, Marte is gonna
get here, and Ces is gonnaget here, and there's this constant churn
of guys that you could bring upthat add something to the team. Now
we're looking at Mike Ford, whoremember he's a bad first guy with a
(37:05):
career batting average of two hundred. That's that's this year's version of Matt McClain.
So there's all of that frustration andit's it's understandable. I share it,
I feel it. And again, like you could, you could be
frustrated with how things are right nowand still have some sense of hope that
things will get better and that thingsare going in the right direction, because
(37:30):
they do if you believe this.Have a lot of good, young,
promising players, and so the thevibes around the team, and the vibes
that have permeated through the fan base, maybe they're now amplified with the added
frustration of another hurt guy and thenthe just raw weirdness of how his injury
(37:52):
situation has been handled. It's bizarre, and there may be very reasonable clinical
slash medical explanations for why this hasgone down the way it has. I'll
certainly allow for that, but thisfeels weird, and when you have weird
(38:15):
pilot on top of frustration, it'snot a great feeling. All right,
Thanks for hanging on, everybody.Five point three seven four nine, fifteen
thirty. Greg, you're on ESPNfifteen thirty. What's up? Yeah,
listen, great fan of the ofthe show, doc I just want to
tell you real quick. I can'tremember exactly it was eight or nine,
(38:38):
but I took my daughter and herboyfriend and we went over to your show
over in northern Kentucky. Oh no, so, yeah, what was what
was the name of that bar? That's that's an open ended question. I've
broadcast from a lot of bars.It was northern Kentucky. It was it
an opening day, Yeah, ohit was. I would have been either
(39:00):
Game Works or Arnie's. That's like, I just wanted to throw that in.
I just wanted to tell you thatI've been a fan of you in
the show for a long time. That's very kind man, Thank you very
much. I do, in fact, I do call in to Tony and
Austin a lot. But then ofcourse I'm listening to you when you're there
(39:22):
on the end of the show. But here, here's what I'm saying.
I can tell you I'm being veryhonest almost all the time. I agree
with what you have to say,and I like the way you You just
kind of say it the way itis. That's kind of the guy.
And I want to tell you thisdeal with this injury is to me,
is beyond bizarre. And I'll tellyou why. With all the medical equipment
(39:44):
that we've got in this day andage, Uh, you see the old
injury, but you don't see thenew injury, or maybe the extent of
it. And this guy's out thereplaying for like eight or ten hours I
mean, excuse me, or tendays, I don't know. I have
a hard time believing that they didn'tsee that there was some maybe a little
(40:07):
break in there. I don't.I don't believe it is what I'm saying.
So anyway, it's hard. It'shard to buy right, it's it's
it's hard. I mean, whenyou put it the way you did.
We're gonna do the imaging, We'regonna do the MRI. It's gonna be
so thorough that we could uncover anold fracture. Now that's plausible. Okay,
(40:30):
we're gonna uncovering old fracture. Butin the in the course of uncovering
an old fracture, we miss anew one. Right, come on,
I don't know, man, comeon, man. Yeah, And I'll
be very transparent. I am tryingto get on uh an orthopedist during this
(40:53):
show. In fact that I'm textingwith the guy who's trying to help me
do this right now to see ifwe can get someone on at six o'clock.
And I'm I'm I'm open minded tobeing swayed by their answer. But
this, this is hard to comprehend. It's hard for me to wrap my
brain around all right, I agree, Yeah, I agree? Was I
(41:16):
was? Was I nice to yourdaughter and your boyfriend? Oh yeah?
Oh yeah they you know they wonlike two years in a row. They
are they still together? No,sorry to hear that. All right,
Well, next time we do ashow out, Greg, come see us.
Okay, Oh yeah, I justlike I said, I just want
(41:36):
to throw that in. Yeah, sincerely. And you know, here's the
thing, Nil, until I startcalling in to Tony and Austin, I
really never called in, you know, never really shawled in much. So
I start calling in and I'm Ialways say, hey, you know,
I got to call into mode sometimes. So I just thought, because I
listened to you all the time,I'm I'm very truthful about that. So
when you were talking about this bizarresituation, I said, Man, I
(42:00):
got a call MO, I gottagot Well, I'm glad. I'm glad
you did. I thoroughly appreciate thekind words and you being in the audience
and calling whichever of our shows youhave time to call into do it again
on ours? Man? Okay,Okay, Hey, great show, Mo.
Thanks thank you very much. Greg. I you know, Greg put
it like I I'm not going totry to play doctor or play medical expert.
(42:22):
I'm gonna I'm working my hardest totry to get one on. But
oh boy, I mean, justlike, put yourself in the position of
the player, put yourself in ceesand shoes for a second, like forget
you and I as fans. Soyou get hit, it hurts. Uh.
(42:45):
They they look at you and theygo, yeah, you're good,
no new fracture. But man,you break your hand before. Now the
nature of that is weird, right, I mean, did did did Christian
(43:06):
suffer a hand injury and maybe notdisclose how much pain he was dealing with.
I don't know. I don't know, but you're him. You're told
you're good. I know it hurts. Actually, we might be dealing with
an old injury here. We're notgonna put you on the injured list.
I'm gonna have you wait a fewdays. Then we're gonna clear you to
(43:28):
play. And you know, theathlete to a large degree knows his body
and says, yeah, I cango out there and play. So we're
gonna have you go out there andplay. And now you get told actually,
no, actually there's a new fracture. I mean, like if you're
whether it was last night or today, and the doctor or whoever tells you,
(43:49):
yeah, you're not gonna believe this, but you're gonna miss over a
month. I mean, put yourselfin his shoes. You're you're you're not
going like what? And so Ipromise you if I'm doing that, and
I would imagine if you're doing that, he's doing that. It's just bizarre.
(44:12):
And I hate to use the verbiagestrains credibility because I know that medicine
is not an exact science. Iknow it's not I know that medical equipment
is not infallible as much as wewish it was. I understand, I
get it. I really do understandthose things. Man, mom was an
(44:32):
E R nurse, like I getit. But you know this. They
didn't take him to some you know, overnight fly by night urgent care where
you have to wake somebody up atthe front desk to get looked at the
Major League Baseball team. And Icould certainly understand. Throughout the course of
(44:58):
playing these last four games and tryingto hit and play the field, boy,
the pain amplified. But I guesswhat I would want to ask Christian
was how did you feel on Fridayand at any point did you feel like
you could say, like this istoo much, like there's something wrong here.
(45:21):
Maybe you're telling me I don't havea broken hand, but there's there's
something I don't know. This isweird, and like, this is weird
if the Reds are in the middleof last season's twelve game winning streak,
but when you add to it howthey're playing offensively right now, the weirdness
(45:42):
just becomes something else. U fivepoint three seven four nine fifteen thirty eight
six six seven zero two three sevenseven six. Uh, there is a
game tonight. There was a gamelast night. Something happened during it that
we have to talk about. Willdo that. I was gonna talk about
Joe Burrow today. There aren't manydays where talking about Joe Burrow gets sort
of bumped aside. But well, here we are on ESPN fifteen thirty,
(46:07):
Cincinnati Sports Station twenty one after four. This is ESPN fifteen thirty on oegor.
We have a poll question. It'son Twitter slash x. It's thanks
to our friends that United Heartland Insurance. United Heartland Insurance gonna help you save
MO money. That's right, MOmoney. They take care of you your
(46:30):
personal life insurance, your business insurance, your auto insurance, your home insurance.
You know you think about like yourhomeowner's insurance. And I think the
weather last night was not great,And that goes without saying I'm glad that
it doesn't appear to be as badas it could have been. But you
know, you watch the weather unfoldthe way it did last night and ask
(46:52):
yourself, are we gonna be okaywith our homeowners insurance? Well, you
can get a free quote online hins dot com, uhins dot com and
tell him you want to save MOmoney, cees broken wrist or deal a
no biggie b WTF vote now atmoegar, I will get to more of
(47:15):
your phone calls in just a second. Third. There was another roster move
made over the last couple of daysthat left many of us scratching our head.
So Sam Mall got sent to Louisvillebecause he had options remaining. Now,
(47:36):
First of all, the Reds thoughtenough of sam Mall last year that
he was their only trade deadline acquisition. This is not some dude that is
trying to stick for one last paycheck. They thought enough of sam Mall that
understanding, they had other areas theycould have addressed. That was the guy.
(48:01):
It proved to be a terrific pickup. Sam almost awesome last year.
He pitched in twenty five games. He gave up a run in one of
them. He was awesome this year. After starting the season on the injured
list, he joins the team andis he dominant? Is he lights out?
(48:23):
Is no? But he pitched quitewell five games, didn't give up
a run, kept the ball inthe ballpark, did a good job.
They choose to send him to Louisvillebecause he had options and other guys in
the pen did not. Okay,Chances are you know Sam all is a
(48:47):
left handed pitcher. So let's flashahead to last night. Now, the
Reds lose the game last night,I guess primarily because offensively this team is
just in a historically big offensive funk. They get the two homers late in
the game, India then Stevenson, but other than that they do next to
nothing offensively shut out for six innings. Zach Allen, who was third in
(49:10):
the Cy Young voting last year,is a good pitcher. Hasn't been off
to the sort of start that youwould expect. Was really good last night,
really good, really pitch of fisionprobably could have gone deeper to the
game only through seventy nine pitches,He's really good. Frankie Montass made his
return. He wasn't perfect by anystretch, but you know, six innings
of two run ball, you can'tobject to that. And you know,
(49:35):
also maybe he could have gone alittle bit deeper. He gets pulled and
it's a two nothing ball game. The Reds then call upon Justin Wilson.
Justin Wilson's a left handed pitcher. Now, Justin Wilson's been pitching in the
big leagues for a while. He'sbeen a part of the Reds for a
while because, as you probably recall, he was acquired by the Reds at
(49:55):
the trade deadline in twenty twenty one. Justin Wilson comes in and proceeds to
basically pitch the game out of reach. If they harbored any chances of winning
the game when it was too nothingwhen Montass left, they have operated when
Wilson comes in and gives up fourruns. Sam Mall is a better pitcher
right now, at least has beenthis year and last year, better pitcher
(50:16):
than Justin Wilson. Now, hisnumbers this year are inflated by the way,
it's a better pitcher than Justin Wilsonlast year because Justin Wilson didn't pitch
his numbers this year so far inflatedbecause of last night. But did you
watch that in the seventh inning, watch the game unravel and think, as
(50:38):
I did, God, I wonderif sam Mall could have done any better
Again, you might, you mightside with what they chose to do and
understand, Look the option system,it's it's convoluted, it's complex and at
times will keep a team from actuallyputting its best twenty six guys out there.
But it's a choice they made. You might say it's an understandable choice
(51:01):
they made, but it's still achoice they made to not carry the best
twenty six or not have the bestpossible bullpend because as he is proven,
Sam Mall is among their better relievers, not infallible, not immune to a
bad outing. You might have someoneLouisville, but you know, again,
(51:21):
this franchise, whether it's fair ornot, And there's most of me that
feels like it's unfair. But youand I both know there are people who
believe that, in spite of theirsuccess in putting together a team last year
that was exciting, and in spiteof doing a very good job of stockpiling
(51:44):
young talent, there are still folkswho will tell you that they believe the
Reds are unserious about winning. That'sa criticism that's out there. It might
be off base. You might disagreewith it. They will tell you it's
rough ba, it's off base, but it's out there. Something like this
(52:08):
only fuels that narrative, whether youagree with it or not, it's out
there that this franchise is not seriousabout winning, isn't prioritizing winning, And
again, like I don't know howfair or valid that is. They went
on a decided to take the franchiseon a path that resulted in a one
(52:30):
hundred loss season, but they reallyhaven't deviated from it, and the results
have been encouraging for the most part. But because of that, and because
of the long gap between you know, relevant seasons and the interminable weight to
watch the Reds advance in the postseason, what is built is a belief and
(52:53):
you might not share it. Whatis built is a belief that this team's
top priority isn't winning, isn't puttingthe best team on the field. A
transaction like that one only fuels thatnarrative, perhaps quite unfairly, but it
(53:14):
only fuels that narrative. And ona smaller level, you know they're struggling
enough offensively, their margin for erroris small enough. Isn't it worth exposing
(53:34):
someone to the waivers process for thesake of having one of your best relievers
handy? And if you expose tothe waivers process, let's say Lucas Simms,
like Lucas Simms this season, he'snot been as good as Sam Maull,
a different type of picture. Obviously, he's a writing or Justin Wilson.
(54:00):
Do you want to lose Justin Wilson? Not really, No, not
ideal, But is facing the possibilityof losing someone like that worth it to
keep one of your best relievers onthe staff. I'm not trying to tell
you that I think Sam Mall isDennis Eckersley or Mariano Rivera or somebody who
(54:22):
would be a fourth Nasty Boy.I'm not. But just among the positive
acquisitions the Reds have made is SamMall. That's one of the biggest feathers
in Nick Crawl's cap. They decidedto remove him from the team because they
(54:45):
wanted to avoid losing a bunch ofguys who this year haven't pitched as well.
That's hard for me to accept. And I'm not one that talks unendingly
about how they don't prioritize winning orthey're unseerious about winning, because I don't
really believe those things. But Ido know that narrative is out there,
(55:08):
and what they did with Sam onlyfuels that narrative. Four thirty more phone
calls coming up five one, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty
eight sixty six, seven oh two, three, seven, seven, six
twenty nine from five Brenneman and Joneson baseball coming up as well on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Cincinnati'ssports headlines are a service of Kelsey Chevrolet,
(55:34):
Home of Lifetime power train protection andguaranteed credit approval from their family to
Yours for Life, Kelsey chev dotCom. Christian Incarnasi on Strand is headed
to the injured list. I'm gonnaI'm gonna do the responsible thing here and
read the clinical term. According tothe Reds, he has a right owner
(55:57):
styloid fracture. It's a new fracturein the aftermath of him getting hit by
a pitch, not last night, not over the weekend, but on April
the twenty seventh. To replace himon the roster, Mike Ford has been
signed to Mike Ford Killer Spring Goodmonth or so at Louisville six home runs
is now with the Reds. Also, Brandon Williamson transferred to the sixty day
(56:21):
injured list. Also worth pointing out, Rhet Lauder has been promoted to Double
A Chattanooga. He had been lightsout for the Dayton Dragons, who last
week I referred to as the DaytonFlyers. Meanwhile, the Reds do have
a game tonight at GABP Cincinnati, trying to snap a six game losing streak.
(56:43):
Good guys will give the ball toGraham Ashcraft. He'll throw against Jordan
Montgomery six to forty tonight on sevenhundred WLW. Now is where we hope
that the Reds lineup is made wellthanks to our friends at Madewell Restoration.
Are you ready? Jonathan India?Sorry, I just I swallowed a piece
of a peanut eminem that I havebeen eating during the break. India is
(57:07):
leading off at second Elie Day LacruzSpencer Steer Stevenson batting cleanup. Espinall's playing
third, Santiago Espinall's batting fifth,Stu Fairchild and right Candelarios at first,
Friedels and center. Luke Mayley iscatching tonight batting. No, he's not,
he's a dhing. He is abatting ninth designated hitter. Luke Mayley
(57:29):
six point forty this evening. Thegame is on seven hundred WLW. By
the way, you probably know this, but a week from tonight the twenty
twenty four NFL schedule will be released. We're doing a show bad Tom Smith
next Wednesday night. And according toCBS Sports John Rosstein, Florida State transfer
(57:50):
Cameron Fletcher is coming to join SeanMiller's program at Xavier. He's had knee
injuries over the last couple of seasons. He has played in seventeen total games.
He is a former four star forwardfrom Saint Louis. You probably know
that he started his college basketball careerat UK with John Callaperi, spend one
(58:10):
season with the Wildcats, and thentransferred played three seasons with Florida State.
He is the latest to join whatis a pretty good transfer class at Xavier.
Sean has one, Seawan, We'rerun first name terms. Sewn has
one scholarship or scholarship remaining to fill. Brendanman and Jones on baseball is coming
(58:34):
up? Mark in Louisville. You'reon ESPN fifteen thirty. How's it going.
How's it going? Well? Firstof all, on the bearer of
bad news. I think you're goingto you personally are going to be responsible
for the Bungles finishing last place.Me and next year? Yes, why
well, you said you were goingto talk about Joe Blooney or Bloney or
(58:54):
whatever his name is, Joe JoeBurrow, Joe Burrow. Yeah, whatever.
If he has to go a wholeday without somebody talking about him,
he is going to get so madthat he is going to smash a wall,
tear his hang nail in another lastday finished. Actually I had him
(59:16):
going out for after the season inGame four, but he may not make
it that long. We don't wedon't know, we don't know who they
playing. How can you say thatit doesn't make any difference. They can't
beat anybody in their division. Well, uh, yeah, that was was
true last week beat the Browns atthe end of the year. The game
(59:37):
that didn't mean anything right. Thelast game of the season, the Browns
played their nice string and a quarterbackthat I think was flipping burgers at McDonald's
in in the second half. Theyalmost came back on them. Anyway,
I will take responsibility of this.I would give you one serious thought,
(01:00:00):
un serious football. Which team inthe AFC North would trade Derek quarterback for
Joe would trade? Answer is none? And I know you think the Browns
would. Oh, I think theywould. I think the Browns would.
I think Pittsburgh would. Now Pittsburgh'squarterbacks such no, no, wait a
minute, wait a minute. Youthink the Pittsburgh Steelers would rather have Russell
(01:00:23):
Wilson, who hasn't been really goodin forever and unproven justin fields ahead of
Joe Burrow. Pittsburgh's gonna win thatdivision. I'm not happy about that,
but Pittsburgh's gonna win that division next. Now, as a Browns you're a
Browns fan, right, you wouldyou still would rather have Shaun Watson,
who hasn't been really good since twentytwenty, ahead of Joe Burrow. Uh?
(01:00:51):
Well, yeah, yeah, answeryour question my honest opinion. Because
we don't know anything about Sean Watson. You don't know anything about him.
We do, yeah, we do. We we know he hasn't been good,
but as often as Joe Burrow is. But all we know about him,
we know, we know he hasn'tbeen a quality quarterback in this league
in four years. Joe Burrow wasan MVP finalist in twenty twenty two.
(01:01:20):
The Bungles cannot beat anybody with orwithout Joe Burrow in that division. Every
they were, they were, theywere bad in the division. The last
years they be. They can't comeclose. But I mean your your your
question was your question was which whichteams would trade their quarterbacks for Joe Burrow?
And my answer is Pittsburgh and Cleveland. So hey, well since we
(01:01:43):
both since we since neither one ofus, you know, we both have
our favorites and neither one of usare going to give in. I just
don't think so. I don't thinkso. I just don't think they trade
Watson. If he if he givesmy one whole healthy season, I think
he'd be really good. Yeah, that's my favorite. Joe Burrown. Well,
(01:02:07):
really quick, but this is thisis this is factually true. Joe
Burrow has had two full seasons wherehe's played in every meaningful game since Deshaun
Watson has last done that. Well, I mean that's true. Deshaun Watson
hasn't played more than six games inthe season since twenty twenty. Burrow did
(01:02:27):
that in twenty one and twenty two. Ask me who my favorite Bengal is
Bungle player is. Who's your favoriteBengals player? That guy that tackled the
Kansas City quarterback when he looked likeon TV that he the yards out of
ground and kept the Bungles from makingit to a little Joseph Osi. Oh,
(01:02:49):
is he's still on the team.He is, Yes, he is
still on the team. Good.I love him, my favorite? Can
we Kenny? Can I talk alittle rich? Of course? Yes?
Okay, the injury, the acquisitionof Candellaria, descending down a mall,
It's just one thing after another.I want you to tell me who's making
(01:03:14):
these decisions? Who is one youdefended? David Bell? I believe you.
I was, Actually you're my favoritesports talk show. Hey, I
believe you when you tell me thatBell is not totally making out the lineup.
He's not totally making all the decisions. I want to know who is
Is it Wayne Crawl. His nameis Nick Krawl. He is the press.
(01:03:37):
Wait a minute, you know what, let me tell you what I
call them Wayne. You know whoWayne Knight is. Wayne Knight, the
newman from Seinfeld, right. Andhe was also in a movie called Basic
in Stink, which you may ormade Roxy. I like Roxy in that
movie. Yeah, you like thatmovie, well for the wrong reason.
(01:03:59):
But anyway, in that movie,Wayne Knight was sweating like a hog.
And every time I see Nick Krawl, I can I just really really quick.
Mark. So you saw the movieBasic Instinct, which came out when
I was fourteen, And so whenthat movie comes out and you're fourteen years
old, it's it's a little bitdifferent. Of all the things you remember
of that film, Wayne knew whatWayne Knight is the first guy who comes
(01:04:24):
to mind. Well, number one, I'm old. Number two, I
didn't see anything in that movie newand uh number three and I have a
big Reds fan. So every timeevery time I see Wayne or Crawl Nick
Krawl on TV interview, I thinkof Wayne Knight. So so to answer
(01:04:46):
your question, tell what to answeryour question, somebody to answer just running
this organization? Bad bad? DidWayne did? Did Krawl. Is he
the one that pursued and signed calCandelario, Yes, and Marque is the
He is the president of Baseball Operations. So I'll put it to you in
(01:05:08):
terms that I can relate to.We have a president of programming. We
have somebody in charge of programming. When something bad happens in programming, at
the end of the day, itfalls on him. Now, there are
subordinates, right, and the peoplein charge of executing shows. But that's
how it works. Nick Krawl isthe president of Baseball Operations, and so
(01:05:30):
things like player acquisitions and roster maneuversand even something like this. While there
is medical input, at the endof the day, the decision of how
to handle the roster comes down tothe desk and the decision making of Nick
Krawl. And so that criticism thatthat he is taking and you're gonna throw
(01:05:50):
his way, as much as Ithink Nick has done some good things,
is completely valid. Okay. Thensomething you said, yes, two things
you said yesterday you were running downthe list of players, why this one,
is this one? That and that? And then you got the Candelarian.
You said he's gonna play no matterwhat. Yeah, because he's making
(01:06:10):
fifteen million dollars. That's a hugemistake. If he just because he's making
fifteen million dollars, he's killing theteam. Well, it is. It
is a combination of the money he'smaking and not having noelve Marte. But
I mean, yeah, you know, like if it's not I hate to
(01:06:31):
say it. What's especially now withoutCees? What's a better option at this
moment than jam or Candelaria? Well, I mean that's that's a tough question
to answer me. I would havebrought in, uh the left fielder to
play third base and and uh putsomebody else I would have He's not much
(01:06:58):
better option, but I the littleguy number seventeen. Uh the outfielder good
defensively? Who am I talking about? The right handed hitting outfielder. He
doesn't hit much, but he he'snot not not not Fairchild? Yes,
(01:07:18):
yes, so had Fairchild in Candelarian? Well no, it was Stuart Fairchild's
batting a buck seventy nine. Buthe's only a limited time he does.
He hasn't had the playing time thatCandelarry had. He's if the team is
better defensively with him in the outfield, But Candelario plays third base, he
(01:07:41):
doesn't play the outfield, but theycan bring give me help me the guy
playing left field, Spencer Steer. You want I'd play Spencer Steer at thirty
base? Yeah, sure, yes, I put him at third base.
A many more things. Jamber Candelariois actually halfing and this isn't saying much,
and I do have to go herein a second, Mark, Jamer
(01:08:02):
Candelario is having a better offensive seasonthan Stuart Fairchild. Okay, all right,
I agree with that, but I'mjust saying, if long run,
I just like Fairchild in there better? Can I do one more quickie?
I got like thirty seconds. Okay, you were talking about making a trade
yesterday the reds ought to consider Greenand the reliever, and you could throw
(01:08:27):
in the second basement for a good, good, good hitting outfielder. Green
will never be worth more than heis right now. Thanks for taking my
call. I love your show,Mark, thank you. That was entertaining.
Wish I wish I had more time. By the way, so we
have a medical questions. So we'regonna get on our buddy, doctor Jonathan
Slaughter from Orthosinzi at five twenty tohelp us make sense of this. Christian
(01:08:50):
and Carnassio on strand situation. Iwish I had somebody who could make sense
of our buddy, Mark Brendiman toJones on Baseball Next, ESPN fifteen thirty,
Do that good afternoon, six afterfive, ESPN fifteen thirty, Moeger,
thank you for listening. It's thefive o'clock happy hour. Thanks for
our friends at michelob Ultra. Ifyou are a Reds fan, I bet
(01:09:15):
you you could use a mic UltraReds and Diamondbacks tonight they saw micultra at
ballgames. Have we seen you knowlast night weather. It was such a
big part of the story all throughoutthe greater Cincinnati area, and it was
dangerous. It did not have anyimpact on the game. I have not
seen what impact weather may have ontonight's tilt Reds and Diamondbacks Game two.
(01:09:40):
This is we'll get to the Cesstuff here in a second. We've got
some quotes from Ces. Look man, I said yesterday, I put a
lot of I put a lot onthis series against Arizona. Obviously didn't get
off to a good start. Soyou're gonna have five game, five game
losing streaks. You really can't turnthem into six, seven, eight,
nine game losing streak this team.I don't like stuff like must win.
(01:10:03):
But how big of a hole doyou want to dig? How big of
a hole do you think this team, which is now gonna deal with yet
another injury, How big of ahole do you want to have to spend
the heart of the summer trying todig out of? Yes, they dug
out of a hole last year. Two things. One, At one point
(01:10:27):
last season they won twelve straight games. Do we think that's gonna happen again
this season? Number two? Theymissed the playoffs? Why because those games
at the beginning of the season count. Tonight feels huge. Another injury.
Christian and Karnasi on Strand is gonnamiss anywhere from four to six weeks because
(01:10:53):
he's got a wrist fracture. Nowwe're gonna chat with one of the experts
from Ortho Sincy in just about tenmin's about the wrist, about what's next,
and about how this could have Ihate missed diagnosed, but how this
could have and did unfold the wayit did. CS was hit by pitch
(01:11:15):
April to twenty seventh. They dida scan, an old fracture is revealed.
He misses some time. They playshorthanded. He comes back, he's
not very good, and then anotherscan reveals actually a new hand fracture.
I'm reading some quotes here from ourfriend Charlie Goldsmith at the Inquiry in Cincinnati
(01:11:38):
dot Com. From Cees on theold fracture being revealed by the original scan,
quote, it was like the oldone is fully recovered and healed.
Just get the inflammation out and it'llbe okay. Cees got a follow up
and says, quote, I knewnothing about the new fracture. Took some
(01:12:00):
time for a new fracture to showup, especially right around the old fracture.
So the insinuation here seems to bethat the inflammation caused by getting hit
by the pitch, maybe the inflammationprevented the new fracture from really being detected.
We're gonna chat with a doctor whoknows a thousand times more than any
(01:12:21):
of us in just about ten minutes. So there's a lot here. There's
the mechanics of how it went fromhe's fine, it's not a new fracture
to actually it is. There's that. There's also the baseball part of this.
So on one hand, it's anotherguy that we thought was going to
(01:12:43):
be a big part of this teamand is a big part of the Cincinnati
Reds as an organization that's not changed. But another guy on top of TJ.
Friedel, on top of Matt McClain, on top of Noelve Marte.
You could add Frankie Montas I guessto it. Freedol is back. But
it is another guy that was viewedas central to what the Reds are trying
(01:13:06):
to accomplish this season and obviously alsobeyond that's going to miss an extensive amount
of time. Yesterday was viewed asa positive because you got one of those
pieces back one day later, subtractanother piece. It's it's tough, it's
(01:13:27):
frustrating, it's maddening, it's hard. For David Bell, it's it's hard.
Like we can, we can getinto the ins and outs and we
have today the weirdness of how thisall unfolded. But moving forward, it's
yet another guy that was supposed tobe a big part of this team.
Now for Cees, well, hewasn't putting up very good numbers. Nobody
(01:13:47):
else is. There's two ways oflooking at this. One is he's still
developing. Right, I've said I'vesaid this like every day, just bit
my life. That hurt every daysince the start of the season. What
the Reds are trying to do ishard. They're trying to win, they're
trying to get to the playoffs, and they're still developing players. Ces is
(01:14:10):
one of those guys who was stillbeing developed twenty four years old this time
last year, playing a triplea fewerthan one hundred big league games. He's
he's still he's still adjusting to theleague and adjusting to how the league has
adjusted to him. When you're stilldeveloping, inactivity can stunt that development.
(01:14:30):
Do you ever think about, likehow good Hunter Green might be right now
if he was able to pitch againstbatters in games during the COVID year,
or how good he might be hadhe not had Tommy John surgery. We
don't worry about this with Edwin Arroyo, perhaps their top prospect, who's out
for the entire season now. Cesisn't. We hope'm gonna miss an entire
(01:14:53):
year, but he's gonna miss sometime, so that hurts his development,
and anything that hurts a guy likehim and his development, it's bad for
the team. But in the interim, in the short term, it gives
Mike Ford a chance. And Imean, let's be honest, this team's
batting slump can't be pinned on anyone guy. It can't be pinned on
(01:15:15):
any one type of guy. Playerswho are part of this organization's foundation are
really struggling. Ces Spencer Steer,Elie de la Cruz, players who were
acquired from outside to give this teamsomething on offense that you could wrap your
brain around not contributing. That's JamerCandeleo. Players who have been here for
(01:15:42):
a while who are a little bitmore established, Jonathan India, Tyler Stevenson
not performing offensively. Players at thebottom of the roster like Bubba Thompson who's
obviously no longer on the roster, like Nick Martini, who's obvious no longer
on the roster. Those guys doingpretty much what you would expect. Nobody
(01:16:03):
is hitting right now, and soMike Ford is up. The Mike Ford
saga has taken on a life ofits own. Opted out of his deal
twice with the Reds minor league deal. In the in between time, had
a really good productive month or sowith the bats, had a terrific spring
(01:16:23):
training, did hit sixteen homers, with a seven ninety eight ops for the
Mariners last year in eighty three games. He's up on a minor league deal,
gonna make the pro rated amount ofa one point three million dollar salary.
Why not? Like, what elseis there? This is unique to
last year? Last year it wascall guys up, get your better players
(01:16:46):
here, let's go what do wegot at Louisville. So I'm all for
anything, trying anything in the shortterm, Losing Christian and carnassion Strand doesn't
feel like that big of a dealbecause, like so how many other guys,
he just wasn't hitting. So here'sMike Ford's chance to show that he
belongs, to show that he shouldhave been should have made the team at
(01:17:09):
of spring training, to show thathe should have been given a minor league
deal, and to be a partof the solution. What hovers over all
of this is how this played out, and how this played out feels bizarre.
And when you combine the bizarre withthe frustrating, that's not a good
(01:17:30):
combination. And it's been frustrating watchingthis team. It's bizarre working your way
through this Christian and Caronasione situation.Let's chat with one of the many experts
from Ortho Sinsey to kind of tellus how we may have gotten here.
Next on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati SportsStation after five o'clock. This is ESPN

i n Cy dot com. Answeringour call today is our friend doctor Jonathan
Slaughter, who is our go toguy in the immediate aftermath of Joe Burrow's
(01:18:34):
wrist injury last year that he sufferedagainst the Baltimore Ravens. And we're dealing
with something that I don't know,maybe it's maybe it's similar. I don't
know, doctor Slaughter. It's it'sgood to have you. I appreciate the
time. How are you good? Thanks mo, I'm glad I could come
on for I'm glad you could dothis. So we're working through a lot
here. Christian and Karnassi on strand. He gets hit by a pitch April
(01:18:56):
twenty seventh, so about a weekand a half ago. They do the
x rays are negative. We're toldthat they have discovered a new fracture that
Christian was not really aware of.He misses some games, they don't put
him on the injured list. Hecomes back and he plays four games,
and then today we find out anew fracture is discovered, an owners styloid
(01:19:17):
fracture, which I've never heard of, and now he's going to miss four
to six weeks. There's a lotto work through here. Let's start with
the injury. What is an owner'sstyloid fracture? Absolutely so. The honor
stiloid is a little piece of bone. So it's one of the long bones
of your form. If you feelyour elbow on that point at your elbow,
that is your owner. If youtrace that all the way down,
(01:19:39):
it comes to the small finger sideof your hand, and you feel this
bump that's on our head and there'sa small, little protusion off that called
the Olner styloid. That's where differentligaments attached to help with ristability, as
well as a piece of cartilage calledyour triangular fibro cartilage complex, which is
like the meniscus of the wrists. So the an Olner style fracture is usually
(01:20:00):
a fracture somewhere through that little smallprotrusion of bone, whether it's just a
small little evulsion pulls a fleck abone off the end, or it could
be all the way down at thebase of that, but it's that small
protrusion of bone that is fractured. All right, walk me through why something
like this is now just now beingdiscovered and maybe didn't appear on the scans
(01:20:23):
the next rays a week and ahalf ago. Yeah. So a lot
of times fractures, especially if it'sa blunt force trauma, can create a
bone contusion, which is almost thestart of a fracture if you continue to
stress it. And sometimes you caneven have a crack in the bone through
the contusion that you can't initially see. Well, especially with blunt force trauma,
(01:20:45):
because most ulner stylid fractures you seeis after a fall and it's associated
with the other long bone the radiusfracture also, so here he probably had
a blunt force contusion where or likea bruise of the bone that could have
had a small crack that doesn't initiallyshow on X ray. He probably had
some tenderness there, and so ifI was seeing him, I see the
(01:21:08):
x rays, no obvious fracture,a little pain there, likely a bone
bruce, especially given the mechanism.Let's rest this and mobilize it for a
couple of days. Ice it,see how you do. If you're getting
better, then let's start swinging.See how you play. Then he started
swinging, he probably continued to havediscomfort, but being an athlete who's a
good athlete that wants to help histeam and also wants to play because he
(01:21:30):
doesn't want to lose the spot, continues to play. Now he's having lingering
pain. They check out again andeither the force of him constantly swinging,
potentially even rolling over a ball causeda small little contusion or crack to fully
displaced. That means kind of moveposition and become a parent on X ray.
(01:21:53):
We've been talking a lot about wristinjuries. You and I talked about
Joe Burrow about six months ago TJfree. You don't suffer to risk injury.
How does something like this particular injurycompared to other risk fractures, torn
ligaments, and things of that nature. So this one that would act more
like a risk sprain. Yeah, the bone is there's at least a crack.
(01:22:14):
I don't know if it's displaced ornot, but it can be seen
now in imaging. But it actsmore like a sprain because it's where the
ligaments that help with stability of therisk. However, it's nowhere in the
category of Joe Burrow. Joe Burrowcould be a more devastating type injury,
but he's showing good recovery promise. So this one is going to be more
like a risk sprain that you reallyjust need to get the ligaments to settle
(01:22:36):
down, calm down, and heal. So we're not talking about something where
surgery is a likely option. It'svery rare, so we do occasionally operate
on owner styloids. It depends onwhere in the owner stilo it. If
it's at the base where it comesinto the owner head, it's more prone
to potentially need surgery. But evena lot of those as long as the
(01:22:57):
risk is stable and what we reallyare tested seen there for stability is between
the two long bones to on onthe radius. If he has stability there,
it's very rare operate on these allright, So the timeline being talked
about here is is four to sixweeks. That's pretty open that died and
nobody is saying that he's going tohave to miss the rest of the season
or anything like that. Does thattimeline sort of jibe with what you've come
(01:23:21):
to understand about this sort of injury? Yes, so a lot of times
when I see something like this, and again, an isolated owner stylit fracture
is rare, but when you seesomething like this, it is just a
mobilized rest. Let their ligaments calmdown, try to get the bone to
heal. You're looking at four tosix weeks. He's already a little over
a weekend, so four weeks fromnow would put him almost five and a
(01:23:44):
half weeks out. It could bevery reasonable in four weeks he could start
swinging the bat again, but ifhe continues to have pain and soreness,
it could be more than six toseven or eight weeks. Was there extra
risk incurred by having him play theselast four games. I mean, if
you look at it, yeah,he had soreness. He had there could
(01:24:04):
have been a cult fracture, Soyes, you can always cause a further
injury, but I think it waslow risk, just based on everything I've
read so far with the negative Xrace. Obviously he is able to swing
the bat. We can argue onit if it was effective or not.
But he was able to swing thebat with minimal discomfort. So I don't
think the risk of him continuing toplay was inappropriate at all. It's something
(01:24:28):
I would even have my college orhigh school athletes do if they were having
minimal pain. What sort of sportingevent are you at right now here?
Kids in the background, Yeah,I'm at my ten year old son's baseball
game. They're loosing it and warmingup all right. I'm one of the
assistant coaches, and I told himjust give me a few minutes, all
right. We will. That's farmore important than talking to me. Get

Welcome doing great, man, Thankyou? Yeah good. I got
two questions for you. One's aroster one and the other one. Well
(01:28:10):
you might tell me I'm crazy afterwards. But we'll find out on the Reds
current roster if they had any bodyworth anything really ready to bring up in
the minor leagues, how many ofthe current guys might be sent or we
should have been sent down just fora refresh and brought back up. C
(01:28:30):
might be one of those guys.Yeah, I didn't know, you know,
we had anything else down there, and hopefully we're not doing I say,
we like, I'm the manager andjam, but hopefully we're not doing
more damage to them by making themstay up here and trying to figure it
out versus getting a refresher. Yeah. Maybe, I mean, I think
unfortunately, if you were to justPeru's Louisville Boys, there's not a lot
(01:28:55):
to like in terms of just whatguys are doing this year. And now
does that mean that, you know, for instance, someone like Blake Dunn
doesn't have a big league future,No, of course not. I think
you could find people who think thatcan happen. But his numbers this year
would certainly not suggest that he isready to hit big league pitching, and
so no doubt about it. SoI mean, that's you know, it's
(01:29:18):
it's it's not like where we weretwelve months ago, where you could say,
God, Kevin Newman is playing, why not call up Matt McLean or
you know they're playing Will Myers,Well, why not call up even Elie
Dela Cruz even though they don't playthe same position. It's it's a little
bit different this year. But Imean, look, just because you have
(01:29:38):
what a lot of people think isgoing to be a bright future and you
get called up doesn't mean you haveto stay. You know, if you
look at the Baltimore Orioles called upJackson Holiday and then he goes two for
thirty eight, they sent him backdown. Okay, he's not ready.
Maybe it's just for a couple ofweeks. Maybe it's for the rest of
the season. Who knows. TheCardinals have done that, the A's have
done that with top prospects this year. Just because you get called up doesn't
(01:30:00):
mean that you're immune to being sentdown. And it doesn't have to be
punitive. It could be something that'sfor the players, his mental health,
could be just for his development, could be to the benefit of the player.
And I think you could say thatmaybe Ces would be one of those
guys that you would have to thinkabout doing that with. All right,
now, we'll see if you thinkI'm nuts or not. Last year,
(01:30:21):
before a couple of games, wegot down there early and Elly is out
there taking batting practice. There's onlyone other guy around the cage, and
that's mister Vando. Elly would takefour or five swings. Joey would stop
him, step in the cage, show him something, go back, and
Helly'd work on it some more.We all know his realists that Joey might
(01:30:41):
be on the tail, he's onthe tail end of his career. Did
the Reds undervalue him for what hecan be as a teammate and a mentor
to these younger guys, as somebodythat's, hey, he's got MVP,
he's done it before, we needto follow his lead versus what they're doing
now. Not true. Some ofthat could be Joey might have wanted other
things and the Reds didn't want tohave. But is Boto not being here
(01:31:03):
helping or hurting their development? Ithink there's something to that because many of
many will say, well, DavidBell's got to do something. I think
in the role that you just talkedabout the managers, the manager's got limitations.
I think what you could argue ismissing is someone like that. I'll
(01:31:27):
use Scott Rowland as an example, who was brought to the Reds in two
thousand and nine and they certainly thoughthe had more in him. They gave
him a contract extension. They thathe could still be a productive player,
but his primary role during a timewhere the Reds were calling up a lot
of guys was to provide leadership. And you know, there's obviously an expiration
(01:31:51):
date on that, and then there'sthere's only so much you're willing to pay
for that. But when he left, many talked about how that that void
that is still there. For yearsafter Scott Rowland left, Joey filled that
role. You know, I rememberlast July or August reading a piece on
Will Benson where Will went out ofhis way to talk about Joey Vada,
(01:32:11):
just talking to him on airplane flights. Is there anybody who could do that?
Is there anybody who can serve inthe role that you just mentioned?
Is there anybody you know? DavidBell played and had a very good major
league career, but he's a manager, and so maybe his ability to relate
to players is different than somebody likeJoey who is an active player. Now,
(01:32:33):
the reality is Joey is not playingright now. I think he is
maybe just now ramping up baseball activitiesin the Toronto organization, So you know,
who knows if he would be onthe active roster. But I do
think there is some validity to thesuggestion that the team as a whole misses
a guy like that who has beenthere, done that. He's been through
(01:32:55):
highs he's been through lows, he'sbeen through batting slumps, he's been through
team wide batting slump, and couldprovide perspective, could provide an ear,
could provide batting tips, whatever itis. I don't know who that guy
is supposed to be on that team, on this team, because there's really
nobody who's come anywhere close to accomplishingwhat a player like Joey has, And
so I certainly think that I'm guiltyof maybe underestimating that role being needed on
(01:33:23):
this team and Joey's ability to servein it. Now you could ask,
is that role worth twenty million dollars? Probably not, But is that role
valuable? Yeah? I think so. If this team was to make a
deal, do they need somebody andthat role more than they need somebody that
can produce? I mean, ifthey get somebody that did both, that'd
be wonderful. But even if it'sthey're trading away a low level prospect to
(01:33:46):
get somebody like that in and thathelped them more. You think I'm I'm
always going to side with production andupside and launchevity, you know, I
mean, I'm more interested in somebodywho could produce, But you know,
if there's a player who sort offits that description, and off the top
of my head, I don't knowwho it is, somebody who could still
(01:34:09):
help in a very tangible way.You know, again, I'll make it
about Scott rolling. Scott Roland madean All Star team here, might have
made too and could still help, and you could put in the lineup and
there's not going to be a hugedrop off, but you know, everybody
was going to benefit from him evenif he wasn't hitting. If that sort
of player is out there, I'mnot making a trade for a guy who's
(01:34:29):
going to occupy a roster spot whocan't play just because he could add something
intangible. But if they could stillhelp the team. If what would push
you toward making the deal is thisguy could help the young dudes, then
I think you should be more willingto make it and maybe pay a lot
for it. I agree there's valueand knowledge, yeah, no question,
(01:34:50):
And Joey has a lot, Tom, thank you, and I do believe
I I think I'm guilty of underestimatingthat. Now was I gonna if I'm
running the reds? Am I payingJoey Evado twenty million dollars to stand outside
the batting cage. No, andthe reality is the production had really dried
up. But I think you arebeing very reasonable if you go god,
(01:35:16):
you know what nobody is serving inthat role. Charlie Goldsmith wrote it last
year was the piece on Will Bensonwhere he talked effusively about Joey and his
role and helping him through his firstseason, some of the highs and lows
(01:35:36):
that come with it, and inthe aftermath of Joey leaving a lot of
guys and we did interviews around Redsfestwhere players talked about Joey helping them.
Who does that now? Who hasthe cachet to do that? Now?
No? I like Jonathan India andhe is he has I think tried to
(01:35:59):
fill that role as leader. Butwhat has Jonathan India done in this league,
relatively speaking? Not a lot. He's also not having a very good
year. So yeah, man,I can fully admit that. I again,
like from a pure productivity standpoint andan age perspective and an injury or
(01:36:20):
injury history perspective, you know,Joey's usefulness to the team was probably going
to be very limited. But couldsome of these guys benefit from a very
experienced player, for my money,a huge future Hall of Famer who could
(01:36:45):
help and tutor and mentor and guide. Absolutely, and I do think there's
value in that. And again, like I was on Mike Petrolia's podcast today
and we kind of explored this andScott Roland came up. Scott Roland was
traded for a guy who hit morehome runs in the twenty tens than any
(01:37:06):
player in baseball. And I stillthink the Reds did right in making that
trade, Edwin and Carnassion to theBlue Jays for Scott Roland, because they
got exactly what they were looking for. And by the end of his final
season as a Red there was reallynot a lot of room for Scott Roland.
(01:37:30):
Todd Frazier was a revelation in twentytwelve Joey Vada got healthy. Now,
Roland did play well when Vado missedsix seven weeks that summer, but
he was not the player he waswhen the Reds acquired him. But in
the years after his departure, playersoften talked about we haven't replaced him,
(01:37:53):
and we have nobody really qualified toserve in his role, and in recent
years maybe doing it in a differentmanner. Joey just listen to the players
served in that role. Do Ithink there's some value in that? Yeah,
And it is worth saying, like, if you're going to if you're
(01:38:15):
gonna move on from a guy ofhis stature, of his experience, and
who has his willingness to help, should more have been done to find somebody
who could fill that role but alsostill play? And again, Joey,
I hope he gets healthy and plays, and I hope he kills him one
(01:38:35):
of my all time favorite players. The productivity and the salary were obviously going
to be something that you had tofactor in, but he served in a
role last year that was important. It was even if he didn't hit a
ton Has anybody filled that role?I don't think the answer is yes.
(01:38:59):
And could somebody's serving in that rolereally help this team right now? How's
the answer? No, we haveto go. Show's over, yep?
Or are you just randomly playing music? No? No, No, you've
seen the spot log today. It'sas long as the Reds injured list.
(01:39:21):
