Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, this is Dan Horror, joined Dave Lapom and me
for every play of every game on the official home
of the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Hey, everybody, it is Mike Petralia Trags and I am
your host for the next three hours, filling in from
Oegar on the Moegar Radio Show on Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
We have a lot to get to and a lot
of different subjects to cover in the next three hours.
We're starting with the Cincinnati Reds. We'll bring Brian Geesenslaw
(00:35):
on from FanDuel Sports Network and Reds Live pre and
postgame in just a moment. We'll also be talking some
Bengals with Reaganholtgate of WXIX Fox nineteen here in Cincinnati.
She is also a big golf fan and did some
great work from the Memorial a couple of weeks ago.
We'll talk about jj Spawn's historic run and finish at
(00:58):
the US Open last week in Oakmont. Also coming up
at four h five, we're going to talk with our
own Dan Hord. We're going to talk about you see
Bearcats basketball their first practice this morning, and Dan Horde
got a sneak peek inside the fifth Third Arena where
they were this morning. I believe it was fifth third
(01:20):
and we'll talk with Dan Horde about that as well,
and then at four thirty five, I'm looking forward to
having this discussion with Dustin de Pirak of the Indie
Star as we look ahead to Game seven. There's no
better two words in all of sports than game seven,
and that's what we're going to have Sunday night in
Oklahoma City between the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City
(01:42):
Thunder in the NBA Finals, Indiana winning convincingly last night
on their home court at Gamebridge Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis.
So we'll get to a lot of subjects in the
next three hours, but first I want to start by
talking naturally. We're in mid to late June right now,
June twentieth, and uh, there's a big series coming up
(02:05):
this weekend in Saint Louis, the Cardinals and the Reds.
Brady Singer is on the mound tonight for the Cincinnati
Reds and to preview it before he heads over to
the studio is the one and only Brian Geeson. Saw Brian,
thanks for joining me and are you staying cool? Before
you go into work.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Are you what's up track?
Speaker 4 (02:27):
You have to ask me about the You don't have
to ask me about the heat.
Speaker 5 (02:30):
Man, I grew up in Texas. This is this is like,
this is nothing.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
This is this is a pleasant summer afternoon, as I
expect it to be all weekend long.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
So let me ask you. I'm going to start off
with this baseball question.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
TJ.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Friedel the best leadoff hitter in baseball? Or is he
among them?
Speaker 5 (02:50):
I think he's got to be in that group.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
And I haven't you know, I've looked at the numbers
that we all see of a number of times they
reached base, where he ranks among leadoff hitters, where he
ranks among center fielders, all of those numbers from getting
on base, two hits to check in all those boxes
(03:13):
that you want your leadoff hitter to check, I think,
I think absolutely, And I think that was that was
a question mark coming into this season because Freedom obviously
in the past few years the numbers haven't been there
as much because it seems like he was always battling
some injury and I think sometimes battling some things that
largely the most of the public didn't know about. But
(03:34):
he's healthy right now. And when I talked to him
most recently, I said, do you just feel like you're
able to finally play free?
Speaker 5 (03:43):
And he said, that's exactly the way I feel.
Speaker 4 (03:46):
He said, I've kind of found some things that worked
for maintaining my body. You know, no one's one hundred percent,
you know how that goes. But he said, I feel
like I'm playing free and easy. And the thing that
impresses me the most about freedom right now, the fact
that he's getting on base so much, is if you
watch his takes right now when he's at the plate,
(04:06):
there's no one taking pitches more confidently than TJ.
Speaker 5 (04:11):
Friedel, and you know, taking.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Pitches that are outside the strike zone or taking strikes
that he knows aren't his pitch to hit. But the
confident takes right now from TJ. Friedel, I think tells
you a lot about where he is right now, just
to you know, fulfilling that job description that he has
of being the table setter, being the.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
Tone setter, and the guy that gets on base. He
got on base.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
You know, he had three hits in the game yesterday
and aside from his leadoff double to start the game,
his other two hits I believe were to start an inning.
So it just kind of feels like he's in the
right spot right now and doing exactly what the Reds need.
Speaker 5 (04:50):
Him to do.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
It was his seventh three hit game of twenty twenty five,
and that's tied for eighth most in the National League.
I actually thought that number might be a little bit higher.
But the thing I love about TJ. Friedel is the
energy he brings. And I know this intangible. Bryan gets
brought up and tossed around all the time, but there
(05:11):
is an energy about him at the top of the order,
not only him smiling in the in the clubhouse before
the game and keeping everybody loose and chill, which he does,
but when he's at the plate and starting a game.
I think in all three games he let off the
game offensively for the Reds with a base hit, and
(05:32):
two of those situations on Wednesday night. In Yesterday's loss,
those leadoff hits led the two run rallies that turned
to one nothing deficit into a two to one lead.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
I mean we talked about you know, there are different positions,
different spots in the lineup that they're just different things expected.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
And your leadoff guy your center fielder. Those are two
of the.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Things that, Yeah, there are a few more things expected
of that position, and it always helps when you have
a leader in that position, when you have someone that
plays that way, that, as they say in hockey tracks, kind.
Speaker 5 (06:14):
Of drags other guys into the fight. I think TJ. Friedel.
I think TJ. Friedel pulls other players into.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
The game by the way that he plays, by the
way that he leads. His personality suits that just fine.
But you know, he's an exciting player. We talk about
the athleticism of Eli de la Cruz, No one matches
that TJ. Friedel is a really athletic player. I mean
you can you can look at the catches that he
makes in center field.
Speaker 5 (06:38):
For part of it.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
He's just a really athletic kid, and he doesn't get
enough credit for that. But I love the way he's
playing right now. I'm so glad he's healthy and he
gives the Reds a chance. If they piece this together,
you're going to look back and he's going to be
a really big part of the puzzle when everything starts
to click. The thing that's happening right now, though, is
he's been clicking much since you know, the you know,
(07:02):
the first couple of weeks of the season, a little
bit of a slow start, like a lot of guys do.
But he's been clicking for a while now. It's been consistent.
He's a big part.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
Of the answer and the solution that the Reds get right.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Another big part of the solution that the Reds want
to get right, and this player wants to get right
as soon as he can is Matt McClain. You can
absolutely see signs of him starting to come around. Every
time Terry Francona talks about hitting to the opposite field
and getting your swing right, I think of Matt McClain
because Dustin Pedroya was the same way. And we've heard
(07:36):
this at nauseum now that Matt McClain is Dustin Pedroya
two point zero. But you know that twenty two thousand
and seven season that ended with the Red Sox World
Series title under Francona, Dustin Pedroya started in a very
similar fashion. I asked Terry Francona on Tuesday about that
and he said, yeah, there are some distinct similarities between
(08:00):
the two players and that particular start. But you can
see Matt McClain starting to come around, and to me,
if they could get him hitting second consistently, I think
that would make a massive difference in the lineup, especially
when Austin Hayes and noelleve Marte come back.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
Matt McClain started this season on fire. Remember the first
I don't know how long. It lasted a week or two,
and all of a sudden, right away, Oh man, it
looks like Matt McClain is back to the player he
was in twenty twenty three, and then it went away
and he didn't completely find it. Maybe he still hasn't
completely found it, even though, like you said, with the
(08:41):
hitting streak and the way he's looked the last couple
of weeks, it feels like.
Speaker 5 (08:45):
He's starting to get it back.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
But after that start, it took us a little while
to remind ourselves that he missed an entire season.
Speaker 6 (08:53):
He didn't play.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
Maybe he did some baseball things towards the end of
his rehab from the shoulder, but he did play.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
He didn't compete.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
He didn't face for a whole year, and already before that,
having just not even a complete big league season under
his belt. So the number of games, the experience level
where Matt McLain is right now. These things were going
to happen whether he was injured or not. It does
look like now he started to turn the corner. But
the thing that strikes me the most is Terry Francona
(09:25):
has spoken so confidently about Matt McClain from the very
start of the season. He's that convinced of Matt McClain's
talent and Matt McClain's ability to do what he did
for most of twenty twenty three that he's been so
confident talking about him as a good player.
Speaker 5 (09:42):
I know it's in there. I know it's coming back.
He's been extremely patient with him. Now.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
It helps a lot that Matt McClain is the type
of player that it didn't bother him when they moved
him down to eight to nine in the order.
Speaker 5 (09:54):
It didn't bother him.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
He just continued to work and he didn't get results
for a long time. He's starting to get some of
those results now, and I think you start to feel
why Terry Francona, his teammates, and Matt McClain have always
believed through the struggles that it's going to come back
to Matt McClain and he's going to be pretty darn
good when it does.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Each time Terry Francona is asked that question why, it's
because of Matt McLain's approach. He doesn't toss the helmets
in frustration all around the dugout. He doesn't kick things,
he doesn't make things uncomfortable for his teammates. He focuses
on what he can control, and that's fielding his position
as well as he can. And to me, that tells
(10:34):
Terry Francona, look, we know what this kid is. We
know what kind of hitter he's going to be over
the long haul. He's playing the game the right way.
That's why I think Terry Francona is very convinced for
the most part to keep him in there day after
day after day because eventually it's going to break through.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
You have to believe that.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
And think about the injury of his shoulder. I know
he's healthy and all of those things, but coming back
from that just takes a little.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
Time to feel right, and I think he's close.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Let me ask you something in terms of the back
end of the bullpen, how confident are you in the
way it's structured right now? Because essentially you have you know,
Graham Ashcraft went on the injured list this week with
a strained groin. You have really only three or four
high leverage guys to spread over the seventh, eighth, and
(11:30):
ninth innings, and you know two of them, of course,
are Tony Santion. I'm sorry, he's getting to me, Brian.
I got to make some excuse. Tony Santion and Emilio Pagan.
Those are two of the guys that I think have
been relied upon the most at the back end of
the bullpen. My question is do the Reds have to
(11:53):
just wait on Graham Ashcraft to get healthier? Do they
have to go out and get somebody? What's the solution
there for adding depth?
Speaker 4 (12:02):
I think the first part of the solution is to
get at least six innings from your starter. I think
that's the first part of the solution to keep those
guys getting as deep as they possibly.
Speaker 5 (12:13):
Can into games. Yes, there are questions now.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
I think there were some questions when Ashcraft was still here. Yes,
the recipe had been Ashcraft sancyon fora gone to the seventh, eighth,
and ninth. That's a new role for Graham Ashcraft. Every
time he stepped out there he didn't seem like it
was always locked down, you know, forget about it. He
pitched really well at times, but I think there was
(12:37):
also still part of the adjustment of his new role.
And I think, you know, I think he's going to
be really good in that role when he gets healthy
and gets back and gets continues to get experience.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
But without him, yeah, there's.
Speaker 4 (12:50):
There's a little bit of a gap. The other day,
Scott Barlow was fantastic.
Speaker 5 (12:53):
No one ever talks about Scott Barlow. Scott Barlow never
talks about Scott Barlow. He just goes out there and
does what he does.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
But it's going to be interesting to see how it's used.
Right now, I think it's still going to be Tony
Sancion in the spot where Terry Francona feels like he.
Speaker 5 (13:09):
Needs to get the biggest outs.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
Maybe that's not going to be in the eighth always
with Ashcraft app maybe it's a different spot. And I
think everybody's right now is comfortable with Pegan is room
to add there. Absolutely, there is no team ever has
enough options in the bullpen, enough healthy options, So maybe
the Reds can look at it that way. But you're right,
(13:32):
there's going to be a time right now where I
think they continue to feel their way through it. But
right now you have some strength even without Hunter Green,
you have some strength in the rotation.
Speaker 5 (13:42):
If more of those guys can.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
Go six or seven innings, that's going to really help
the guys out in the bullpen a lot.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Starting with Brady Singer and talking with Brian Geesenslaw right now,
fan Duel Sports Network, host of Reds Live pre and
postgame on the Reds broadcast. You can you guys are
on tonight, right it's not.
Speaker 5 (14:02):
An Apple Yes, okay, it is not an Apple broadcast.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
I was going to say, thank goodness for that, but
I won't.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
But I guess I guess I just did.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Sorry, we'll be on good How big are these three
games in the grand scheme of things?
Speaker 4 (14:19):
Yeah, in the grand scheme again things, it's only three games.
That's if you're asking the grand scheme, it's only three games.
But from a mental standpoint, I think they're big. The
Reds are on a little bit of a run. You
win four consecutive series, you beat up the American League Central. Unfortunately,
you don't play in the American League Central. You play
in the National League Central. And they've kind of gotten
(14:40):
the opposite results for the most part against the division.
Speaker 5 (14:44):
In the first part of the season.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
So I think it's big from that standpoint to continue
some of the momentum, but also to win some division games.
Right now, let's take the Cubs out of the equation.
The Cubs have separated a little bit from the rest
of the El Central, but you have the Reds, the Brewers,
and the Cardinals, and they're all right there. It would
behoove the Reds to play well head to head against
(15:09):
the Cardinals, just if nothing else. From a mental standpoint,
I was looking today, I don't think they play another
division game until August, if you can believe that. And
so they've had their opportunities already against the Cubs and
the Brewers and the Cardinals, and for the most part
it hasn't gone well.
Speaker 5 (15:27):
No, they split those four.
Speaker 4 (15:28):
Games against Saint Louis. I think last time. Everything else
has been tough. You know, did they ever line up
And I thought this team is just dramatically better than
the Reds and they don't have a chance, not at all.
The Cubs have a lineup that can kind of beat
you up a little bit, and they did that to
the Reds a little bit, but I still don't think
(15:49):
that that's necessarily that the gap.
Speaker 5 (15:51):
There is that large.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
But given the fact that you're not going to play
division games for a while after this weekend, I think
it would be a big step for this team to
win this series in Saint Louis and just put another
a little bit more of a deposit in your mental
bank of where they are right now, that the momentum
is real, the good baseball is real, and within our division,
(16:14):
those teams that we're neck and neck with right now,
we can do this next time we see them after
the All Star Break.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
I like that financial metaphor a little bit of a
deposit in the mental bank. By the way, August fourth, fifth,
and sixth at Wrigley Field is their next opponent inside
the division, inside the National League Central, So it is amazing. Yeah,
I mean, I guess that can be fine because they're
going to play a decent number of division games coming
(16:44):
down the stretch. They don't play Saint Louis again at
Great American Ballpark until the end of August. August twenty nine,
thirty and thirty one. They wrap up August with the
Saint Louis Cardinals. But that's it for baseball. What did
you think of the Stanley Cup Final? And is Connor
McDavid going to be an Edmonton oiler next year?
Speaker 5 (17:06):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (17:06):
I knew it was coming. That's a great question. So
I was talking to somebody else about it. First off, I,
like you and everybody else, I wanted game seven, Game
seven living great. I wanted Game seven. We didn't get it,
But kudos to the Panthers. They just steamrolled people in
the playoffs. If you talk about teams that were built
(17:28):
for the postseason, Bill Zito, the GM in Florida, who
used to work in Columbus, who's done amazing things in Florida,
constructed that team and built it for the postseason, and
you see the result with three straight finals, back to
back Cup.
Speaker 5 (17:44):
So I love what the Panthers did.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
As far as Connor McDavid, Listen, it's always a good
time to be Connor McDavid right now. If you're in
the NHL, it's a good time to be a free agent.
The cap is going up, the sport is very healthy
right now. I means are going to get pretty big
with Connor McDavid. He'll get all the money he wants
to stay in Edmonton, and maybe he wants to do that,
(18:08):
but I'm not convinced that that's one hundred percent, and
that's not based on any inside information, just kind of
watching the sport, observing the player, the market, the things
that have happened to him the last couple of years.
It's a good time because a lot of guys are
going to get paid, and you know, no one's going
to get paid more than him. Up to him. Whether
(18:30):
he wants to do that up in Alberta or.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
Somewhere else, I don't think he's coming back if Stuart
Skinner is the goaltender. I just don't And I'm not
trying to be cruel. I'm just saying facts are facts,
and if you're looking at that roster, I love hockey.
I love talking hockey with you.
Speaker 3 (18:46):
You know that.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
Every time I come into the Great American Ballpark press box,
I love talking hockey with my friend, my colleague, so
to speak, at least when we're at Great American Ballpark.
The one and only Brian Geesenslaw does a tremendous job,
obviously a pros pro on FanDuel Sports Network for Reds
Live pre and postgame, and that includes tonight where the
(19:11):
Cincinnati Reds visit the Saint Louis Cardinals for the first
of three games, a very brief road trip through Saint
Louis before they're back to play the New York Yankees
for three big games at Great American Ballpark. Stay cool
and thanks for joining me, Brian. I'll talk to you soon.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
TRACKS appreciate you, man. I know you'll be watching tonight.
I appreciate that.

ESPN fifteen thirty studios in Penwood, filling in Promoegger. On
this Friday, June twentieth, on the Muleger Radio Show on
(20:51):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty, we have Reagan Holegate coming up
from Fox nineteen talking Bengals, talking some PGA golf. Want
to look back on that historic event last week, JJ spawn.
It's really one of the best events that I've witnessed
in live television all season long, all year long in
(21:12):
twenty twenty five. I don't think there's any question about that.
We'll get her perspective. She also covered the memorial up
being Columbus up and I should say Dublin. A couple
of weeks prior to that, and we'll get her perspective
on the PGA Tour, which has a lot of fans
around here, no question about that, great great golfing fans
(21:33):
in southwest Ohio. And we'll get a feel for golf
and y Fox nineteen dedicates the resources to going up
to Columbus and covering that. She also covered my Indian
Hill Braves as well as Lakota West and Hamilton Baden.
Those three high schools made it to the state semifinals.
(21:53):
All three of them unfortunately lost in the semifinal, but
we'll touch on that as well. We want take your
calls all afternoon long up until six o'clock, when it
is my chance to leave the studio and watch some
Reds Cardinals tonight. Five one three seven four nine, fifteen thirty.
Five one three seven four nine fifteen thirty. If you
(22:16):
were general manager of the Cincinnati Reds, if you were
Nick Crawl, what is the first thing you would do
to upgrade this roster? Five one three seven four nine,
fifteen thirty. We'll also talk NBA with Dustin Tevere Dopirak
of the Indie Star. What a game last night in
(22:36):
Indianapolis I'm watching that game in the first ten minutes
or so, hoping for a dramatic Game six, because in
a lot of these best of seven playoff series Baseball, basketball, hockey,
the game happens in game six. Game sevens can be
hit or miss. Anything can happen in game seven. That's
the good old sports cliche in those three sports. But
(23:00):
game six is usually when a lot of great, great
moments happened. I'll go back to Game six in the
nineteen seventy five World Series for the Reds winning that series.
Fans outside Cincinnati remember Game six and Carlton Fisk's home
run off the left field foul pole at Fenway Park.
That's what they remember about that series. But is Joe
(23:23):
Morgan and Pete Rose, the late great stars legends of
the Reds, often said what happened in Game seven? Then
nineteen eighty six, we had Bill Buckner in Game six
of the series at Chase Stadium against the New York Matts.
So you get my drift. Game six is usually when
a lot of drama happened, and I'm thinking, Okay, maybe
(23:44):
this is the game of this NBA Finals where something
wild and crazy is going to happen. But Oklahoma City
went up ten to two, and then Indiana blew their
doors off from then on out and won by fifteen
seventeen points. But the game was nowhere close to that
being that close. It was a thirty point game. It
(24:05):
was ninety to sixty Indiana after three quarters. Oklahoma City
didn't score for the first four minutes of the third quarter.
That gives you some indication of what kind of dominance
Indiana had in that game. Number six, forcing a game
seven Monday night on Oklahoma City's home court. So we'll
(24:27):
talk with Dustin Depiak of The Indie Star about that
as well. So we have much more ahead coming up
on the Moeger Radio Show. Phone lines were open five
to one to three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty. My
name is Mike Petralia, and you're listening to Cincinnati's ESPN
fifteen thirty.
Speaker 7 (24:46):

put into words what it means to finally get to
talk to you on the radio show. Truly truly honored.
I'm worry it's Friday. Yeah, it couldn't be better.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Yeah, and you're staying cool. Although, as Brian Geesenslaw, my
previous guest at the top of the hour, mentioned to me,
he's from Texas, so a little bit of eighty five
degree hot and humid heat isn't going to bother him
any And what's your background? Are you come from a
cold weather climate or a warm weather one?
Speaker 10 (27:07):
Well, I'm from Michigan, so the Midwest. It's we didn't
really ever see this kind of heat that I've seen
here in Cincinnati, So yeah, I'm sure for Brian, eighty
five degrees is nothing, But I will say the Cincinnati
humidity is unlike anything I have ever experienced. I lived
right on Lake Michigan when I was growing up, so
(27:30):
you know, we had the wind coming off of the lake.
We had the lake effects snow. Never really had this
kind of humidity. It's daunting, it is, But I will
say I told myself during the winter, because I felt
like this winter was abnormally awful, I told myself, I
was like, you were not going to complain. Once the
(27:50):
warm weather hits, You're going to appreciate that it's warm outside.
So I haven't complained, not a lick.
Speaker 2 (27:57):
Yeah, And I love the heat. I grew up here.
I'm used to the humidity in the summertime and drink
lots of water and sleep a lot. That's the one
thing people don't appreciate and they underestimate the value of
is sleep when it's in the summer. If you're refreshed
(28:18):
and you do most of your activities before noon, the
heat and humidity isn't going to bother you as much.
And that's what Zach segues perfectly and into what I
want to talk about, or the jumping off point with
you anyway, is what Zach Taylor is doing to keep
his players fresh and alert. And alert is the key
word here in training camp, everybody's been talking about what
(28:41):
can Zach Taylor do to change the parameters of training
camp to get this team out of that first two
games slump. They're one and ten or one and eleven
in the first two weeks under Zach Taylor. It's a
statistic that's been beaten to death, but for good reason.
So what do they do. They move training camp practices
(29:04):
from mid to late afternoon to ten AM to noon,
where the team should be in morning meetings from let's
say eight am to about ten, maybe seven thirty or
so to about ten, Get on the field, practice hard
for two hours, come back in break down the film,
have a bite to eat, workout, and get out. I
(29:25):
think that schedule works so much better because I think
they're going to be more refreshed when they work out
when they practice.
Speaker 10 (29:31):
I should say, no, I agree with you and a
few things on this. So obviously, coming into training camp
last season was my first here in Cincinnati. I started
July first, so you know, had a few weeks and
then it was right into the deep end, you know,
with the Bengals and training camp, and all the players
(29:54):
constantly said, you know, week in and week out, you know,
this is the toughest we've experienced. Ted Carris specifically saying
it was it was the toughest training camp he'd been
under Zach he'd experienced under Zach Taylor. And then you
still see them start one in four and you're like, Okay,
what is this September slump? I had heard about it,
(30:16):
and then I'm experiencing it real time. So I think
we're all asking the question what can he do differently?
You know, when these players are saying it's it's the toughest,
most competitive, competitive training camp experience.
Speaker 6 (30:28):
That they've had.
Speaker 10 (30:29):
Okay, so then you you know, turn the page to
twenty twenty five, and yes, again we're beating a dead
horse here, but it's all we're going to be talking
about until we actually see them, you know, maybe start
out one and oh, two and oh. But I'm here
for it. I like the idea. And I also like
what Logan Wilson had to say a few weeks ago
as well, when asked about, you know, the new training
(30:52):
camp schedule, and he said he mentioned his meals. And
I think that's a big sticking point obviously for professional athletes,
is the fact that now they'll be able to actually,
you know, eat their breakfast, and he'll be able to
digest before you get onto the field, because you know
last season, in these past couple off seasons that they've
had this weird timing in the afternoon. It was very weird,
(31:15):
weird around their meal schedules. So I found that very interesting.
But I think, you know, up and down the line
when you talk, you're when you're talking about okay, yes,
their meals, and then you know their time in meetings
and just being able to digest everything quite literally in
a different sense and at different times of the day.
I think will hopefully help this team. And selfishly, I'm
(31:39):
also here for it because we get to beat that
you know, really really nasty July heat that you know,
kind of suffocates you in the middle of the day.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
So speaking with Reagan Holgate of Fox nineteen, the official
station of the Cincinnati Bengals, I interrupt this interview with
Reagan Hulkgate to bring you some Red's news. The Reds
have placed left the Wade Miley on the fifteen day
injured list. Not what they needed left flexer strain. It's
retro to June seventeenth, the day after his last start.
(32:10):
Of course, they recalled right hander and former top prospect,
and I guess you could say he's again a top prospect.
Connor Phillips from Triple A Louisville. They added right hander
Chase Petty to the Taxi squad, and they place Noel
ve Marte left oblique on a rehab assignment to the
(32:30):
Arizona Reds, which had been expected. But again the big
news out of this Wade Miley on the fifteen day
injured list with a left flexer strain. Time for Terry
Francona to do more juggling back to the Bengals. With
Reagan Holgate of Fox nineteen Joe Burrow, we talk about
the slow start, but and Richard Skinner, a good friend
(32:52):
of mine, he co hosts the Jungle War Pod a
lot with me, makes this point often, and he's like,
if you go back and look at all of these
slow starts, the one commonality is Joe Burrow was not
anywhere close.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
To full strength twenty twenty.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
In twenty twenty eight, they were coming off COVID, so
they didn't have a training camp. Certainly, the offseason was
completely disrupted and disjointing. We understand that twenty twenty one
he was coming off In acl twenty twenty two he
had appendicitis twenty twenty three, what happened to cafstring twenty
twenty four? Last year he was coming off the risk
surgery from November of twenty three. He has not been
(33:34):
able to get into a season really truly full go.
I think that's going to be the focus this year.
Certainly he's going to play in preseason games. Zach Taylor
has not made any secret about that. He wants to
get Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and T Higgins and
the first team offense in these games, not just joint practices.
(33:56):
That's why the Bengals aren't doing joint practices this year,
focusing on themselves in training camp, going to focus on
the first team unit in some of these preseason games.
That's another big change.
Speaker 6 (34:08):
Reagan and I.
Speaker 10 (34:11):
Think, you know, we've talked about this a lot in
recent weeks, but this is also the first off season
that really this offense has had with Joe, Jamar r
t now Mike Siki, this entire offense, you know, working
out and getting these off season reps together. And Joe
(34:32):
was even asked, you know, how much of a difference
do you think this makes heading into training camp and
I've asked a few of the guys in the locker
room the same thing, and they're like, you know, as
many reps as we can get together, that's never going
to hurt. So this off season is already kind of
changing the narrative a little bit for the Bengals offense
(34:54):
and what we've seen in the past. And I do
think and I agree with you, it was actually were
just talking about that continuity with Joe Burrow and the
lack there up. I guess I should say in in
the last few years that he has been the common
denominator in these slow starts and we but we all
(35:15):
came to the same conclusion as well. So I think
it'll be interesting now to see him. This is his
first fully healthy off season and you know, fingers crossed
it can stay that way going into training camp. But
I am I am curious to see how things start.
I know I'm getting way ahead of myself, as we
always do. Make sure how one you know it is
(35:37):
it is, but already to see, you know, how this
offense enters, especially I guess into into an extra into July,
but also you know into week one as well.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
All Right, I want to touch on we just have
two minutes here, unfortunately, Reagan, But I want to touch
on Jayjay spawn What was your favorite part of that story?
Him winning the US Open last week at oakmand.
Speaker 10 (36:01):
It just being his second ever appearance in a US Open,
and for him to battle his way back like he did,
to bogee five of his first six holes and then
to make four birdies on the back, and then to
do it in the most I guess with an exclamation
point like that in a sixty four foot putt was
(36:24):
just truly incredible. But you know, my number one favorite thing,
I think just about JJ. He fought through so much
throughout his career, but he also was diagnosed with type
one diabetes a few years back, and Oakmont is already
as rigorous as it gets on the PGA Tour, but
then just to know what he has to also battle
(36:45):
behind the scenes and just personally with his health, I
think it's just a testament to how he was able
to fight through Sunday's round and even said he's like
the hour and a half rain delay kind of settled
me a little bit, and that's happened to him now
twice fifth year where he's gotten a rain delay to
kind of maybe help settle his mind a bit, and
(37:06):
he's been able to really take it into gear. Truly,
just one of the best stories of the year.
Speaker 11 (37:12):
For sure, no doubt to me.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
I'll tell you what it was him getting up in
the middle of the night before his final round of
the US Open to go to a drug store and
get his daughter something. As a father of two daughters, Okay,
I'm going to tell you that touched my heart. That
was my favorite part of the whole story, that involved
him coming from five shots back and not having a
(37:37):
good front nine at all, to making that charge on
the back nine and winning it. Knowing that he still
cared that much about his daughter and was going to
take care of something himself. That was my favorite part.
I'm not gonna lie. But then again, I'm a girl dad.
You know that right about me?
Speaker 3 (37:54):
Reagan? Right?
Speaker 4 (37:55):
I do?
Speaker 10 (37:55):
I did?
Speaker 7 (37:56):
I did?
Speaker 10 (37:56):
Yes, And for context for those who are listening, he
was up at three am the morning of Sunday, the
final round of the US Open because his daughter was
vomiting and could could not keep anything down, as his
wife said, so he had to go to the drug store, yes,
to get medicine for her.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
So yeah, incredible and it just shows that he has
things in perspective. I think most dads would do that anyway,
but I just love the fact that he does. He
did show that perspective. We have got to wrap it
up and head to the top of the hour. Reagan
Holgate of Fox nineteen. She does terrific work. We didn't
even get into you covering the Ohio High school state semifinals.
(38:35):
Unfortunately all three local teams lost in the state semis Indian,
Lakota West, and Hamilton Baden. But maybe we'll touch on
that on your next time on the Moheger moe Egger
radio Show when I'm filling in. Reagan Holgate of Fox nineteen,
thanks so much for joining me.
Speaker 10 (38:54):
Thanks Tregs, appreciate it.
Speaker 6 (38:56):
I'll be back all right.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
All right, She's Reagan Holgate. My name is like Petralia Trags,
and you're listening to the Moegger Radio Show on Cincinnati's
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 7 (39:07):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 6 (39:10):

Speaker 9 (39:46):
This report is sponsored HI.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
This is Dan Horr joined Dave Lappoman me for every
play of every game on the Official Home of the Bengals,
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
To try trags back with you.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
In hour number two of free filling in for Olegar
on the Moeger Radio Show on Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty
on this Friday afternoon, I want to talk some basketball,
not the NBA Finals. We'll do that at the bottom
of the hour with Dustin de pirak Of or Dopirek.
(40:23):
I should say of the Indie Star he is covering
the Indiana Pacers that is going to Game seven Sunday
night in Oklahoma City, Indiana, looking for their first ever
NBA title. No, I want to talk college basketball. Believe
it or not, the Cincinnati Bearcats and their workouts have
picked up on the camp on the Clifton campus, and
(40:46):
here to join me to talk all about none other
than the one and only Dan Horde. Nobody better qualified
to talk about it than Dan Horde. Dan have you
were you invited to top golf?
Speaker 12 (40:57):
By the way, and I was not trags. I saw
that the team did that the other night. Unfortunately I
was not part of it. I can tell you this.
Several years ago, when UC played in Sacramento in the
NCAA tournament.
Speaker 6 (41:12):
They got there really early.
Speaker 12 (41:14):
They were there several days before their first game, so
to kill some time, they took that particular team out
to play top golf in Sacramento.
Speaker 6 (41:23):
I was invited that time.
Speaker 12 (41:25):
And while I am not a great golfer, as you know,
I'm okay, and compared to most of the basketball players,
I was Tiger Woods in his prime. So the UC
men's basketball players were never more impressed by me than
they were playing top golf in Sacramento.
Speaker 2 (41:43):
Probably, and I'm just guessing the only time in your
life where, if not professional, certainly athletes at a very
high level were impressed by your athletic acumen.
Speaker 3 (41:55):
Is that correct?
Speaker 12 (41:58):
That's largely correct, But I will also throw in one qualifier. So,
when I was broadcasting minor league baseball for the patuck
at Red Sox, Mark Kottsey, who eventually became a major
league manager with Oakland, was with the team on rehab.
We were on a road trip where we had a
(42:19):
day game, and after the day game, he decided to
organize a team bowling outing. And I bowled a lot
as a kid. I bowled every Saturday morning. There was
a bowling alley within walking distance of our house, so
I would lug my bowling ball down the street. And
you know, when you do it on a regular basis
when you're young, the muscle memory never goes away. So
(42:43):
I think I could probably go five years about bowling.
Pick up an alley ball right now and at least
have a one point fifty, and back then I was
outter than that. So yeah, So very similarly, there were
some decent bowlers on the baseball team, but most of
the guys stunk, and I wound up being a very
valuable member of my team.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
I love having you on just for little anecdotes like that, Dan,
That's what I love having you on.
Speaker 12 (43:09):
Dan.
Speaker 2 (43:09):
Okay, let's let's get Let's get to the stuff that
people care about, and that is Cincinnati Bearcats. I was
sort of surprised to learn that now workouts they're really
all year round. Obviously football has their spring football and
we understand that. But the Bearcats this morning and you
were able to attend this at Clifton their first workout
(43:33):
of the summer. And there are three names that caught
my eyes with great last names, Aziz Elijah Wan, DeMarcus
Henry and Griffin Starks. Tell us a little bit about
those three players. Were they there this morning?
Speaker 6 (43:49):
No, tracks, those guys are all recruits.
Speaker 12 (43:51):
Oh, those are all guys that Cincinnati is recruiting. None
of those guys are on the team. We'll see if
any of them eventually wind up playing for UC. But
I did get my first look at the rebuilt roster
today and west Mother's done a heck of a job.
There are a lot of good pieces on this roster.
I'm not sure that they have like a Sean Killpatrick
(44:13):
kind of guy that can take over in the last
few minutes.
Speaker 6 (44:16):
Of a game.
Speaker 12 (44:17):
Maybe they do, maybe they don't. But even if they don't,
they've got so many good players of all shapes and sizes.
I really think it's going to be a good year.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
Let me you know, before I let that, you know,
snap who go to pass those three names? The reason
they're significant is Aziz Elijauan is the son of a
team obviously. Then there is DeMarcus Henry, the son of
the late Chris Henry, and Griffin Starks. Why are these
(44:49):
three recruits so vital and important to the UC program tigs.
Speaker 12 (44:58):
I'm not sure that they are, quite honestly. I mean,
those are guys that they have all offered scholarships to.
Speaker 6 (45:04):
I have no idea.
Speaker 12 (45:05):
Where they rank among the schools that are pursuing those players.
They have shared on social media that they have the
Cincinnati offer, and again we'll see if eventually they wind
up playing at UC. Griffin Starks as the son of
a former Bearcat, Keith Stark, so maybe there's a closer
connection there that makes that one a little bit more realistic.
(45:29):
As for you know, Elijah Wan and Henry, I'm not
sure Chris Henry Junior is going to play football at
Ohio State. I believe they have a sister that's an
athlete at Ohio State, so maybe the entire family winds
up there.
Speaker 6 (45:43):
But we're early in the recruiting.
Speaker 12 (45:45):
Process for next year's class. Those names are certainly interesting,
but again I'm not sure how high you see ranks
among the schools that are recruiting those guys.
Speaker 2 (45:55):
All right on to the players that are indeed here.
Sincere Harris from the transfer from West Virginia, how does
he stand out to you? And what kind of impact
can he make on the twenty five twenty six Bearcats.
Speaker 12 (46:10):
Sincere Harris was probably the best defensive player I saw
compete against Cincinnati last year while playing for West Virginia,
and he might have been one of the best perimeter
defenders I saw in any game I watched, whether it
was in person or on TV. He is a junkyard dog,
quick feet, long arms, active hands. He'll be one of
(46:33):
the best perimeter defenders, best on the ball defenders in
the country this year. He's not a great offensive player.
He's not really an outside shooter, but that's okay. They've
got plenty of offense on this roster. He is going
to be maybe the best like perimeter defender they've had
since Rashad Bishop Emmanuel McElroy. I mean, I have to
(46:57):
really go back a long way to think of somebody
has as much defensive talent on the perimeter as a
Sincere Harris. So I was really excited when they were
able to get him to commit after he decided to
transfer from West Virginia.
Speaker 2 (47:11):
Do you think a commitment to defense or a recommitment
to defense from West Miller is going to be one
of the things that helps this team get over the
hump next year and get back to the NCAA tournament.
Speaker 12 (47:25):
I think they have a lot of defensive talent, so
they have to emphasize offense as well. I thought last
year's team really only had a chance of beating good
opponents when the score was low, and I don't think
that'll be the case this year. I think I've got
a lot of good offensive players. But getting back to
your point, Harris is excellent defensively. Mustapha Chom is seven too,
(47:50):
with seven to six wingspan, and led the Big Twelve
in block shots as an eighteen year old freshman last
year at UCF.
Speaker 6 (47:58):
He's an elite rim protector.
Speaker 12 (48:00):
Boba Miller is six', Eleven Jalen haynes is six,' eight
tyler McKinley is six. To nine they've got a lot,
of size a lot. OF length i think it's going
to Be a cincinnati team that's hard to.
Speaker 2 (48:12):
Score against and obviously you can't Mention. The bearcats the
two most, Prominent Names dade Thomas And. Jizzled james they
were there. THIS morning i, presume.
Speaker 12 (48:23):
Yes everybody was present and accounted for on. The roster
dade was shooting the lights out, of it which. Was
good he made strides as an outside shooter. Last year
and you know it's going to be interesting to See.
With jizzle they relied so much on him offensively down
the stretch. Last year, too much, QUITE honestly I Think
wes miller would, say.
Speaker 6 (48:43):
That and they won't have to do that. This year
they've got better. Offensive players they should have.
Speaker 12 (48:48):
BETTER spacing i think they're going to be more driving
Lanes For. Gizzle james hopefully that will help him get
to the line. More frequently and he. LOOKED good, i
mean both of those guys. Look Good and kerkkrisa who
Played at kentucky last year before getting hurt previously Played
At west Virginia. In arizona he was shooting the lights
(49:09):
out of. It today at one point in one three
point drill he went fifteen. For eighteen so if you're
looking for an outside Shooter which cincinnati, has lacked that,
you know really reliable three point shooter in, RECENT years
I Think kirk cresa fits that description if he can.
Speaker 6 (49:24):
Stay healthy do.
Speaker 2 (49:25):
You are you at all surprised That the bearcats have
been able to hold their backcourt tandem Here in clifton
and not see them leave for parts unknown or parts
known for, that matter in this day and age where
transfers are commonplace, obviously commonplace are you surprised that both
(49:47):
of them have?
Speaker 3 (49:47):
Stayed put?
Speaker 12 (49:49):
Not surprised In dayde, thomas's case data would not be
here this year IF the ncaa rules didn't change last
year allowing former junior college players, Extra ability so that
worked out Well. For cincinnati maybe mildly Surprised. WITH jizzle
i know he's got a great Relationship. WITH wes i
know he Really. Likes cincinnati, you know his dad has
(50:11):
been very supportive IN his uc career, So far but
prior to, last year he turned down a lot of
Money from houston to Stay. At cincinnati i'm sure that
there were many opportunities for him this year to make
more in nil than whatever you see is. Paying him
so maybe mildly surprised in, that Case but wes has
done a good job there where he's wanted to, keep,
(50:33):
players generally he's been able to and that tells you
that he's got a really good relationship with.
Speaker 2 (50:39):
His guys speaking with the voice Of the bearcats AND
The Nfl cincinnati bengals one, And Only, Dan Horde, tony
pike my predecessor today walking out, the door we brought
up the new indoor facility At the University, of cincinnati and,
he said.
Speaker 3 (50:57):
It's sick.
Speaker 2 (50:57):
It's unbelievable and The person i'm speaking to right now
hosted the ribbon cutting ceremony a week and, a half
a week and a half, And, AGO dan, i THINK
and i just want to get your impression of that
facility and what it means for you see football In
the big twelve.
Speaker 3 (51:16):
Going forward.
Speaker 12 (51:19):
It's the best facility of Its kind i've. Ever seen
TRAGS and i haven't been to all of them AT
The sec powers and some of the other, You know
monster football factories around, the COUNTRY but i would think
that it's as good as just about any in the
country and better than ninety. Five percent. It's awesome it's
it's even BETTER than i expected it. To BE and
(51:41):
i went on a tour during the, construction process and,
you know you could kind of visualize what it was going.
To be but now that it's finished and you see
all of the artwork and the, you know the multi.
Media displays, you know you touch a screen and you
see The former bearcats that are IN the nfl and things,
like that. It's unbelievable so facilities are part of the.
(52:04):
Recruiting wars they've Always been. Cincinnati has they've had. Decent
Facilities The lindar center, Is Nice nippert stadium, is charming
but they've never had a place that had the wow
factor that. This DOES and i think it's already making.
A difference if you look at some of the early
(52:24):
commitments that they've been able to get in the last,
FEW weeks i think these are guys that maybe they
could never get in the door in. The past so
it's definitely going to pay dividends in that respect and
in terms of developing players for the futures for. The
future you've got everything he could possibly want and need under,
one ROOF and i can't imagine that won't make.
Speaker 2 (52:46):
A difference i guess when you TALK about, Uc, football
dan what is it going to Take For scott saderfield
to sustain the success that? He had certainly last year
when the team started off well but lost whatever it
was their last five games to Not become. Bowl eligible
(53:06):
what is it going to take this year to sustain
that success and?
Speaker 3 (53:09):
Be, different.
Speaker 12 (53:12):
Well the fun ONE thing i would like to point
Out to bearcat Fans because scott's taken a lot, of
HEAT and i. Understand it that's the nature of the
beast in college sports. Right now but this.
Speaker 6 (53:22):
Is year.
Speaker 12 (53:22):
IT'S three, i mean people treat his tenure like he's
been around for ten years and hasn't had. Much success
it's been two years under. Difficult Circumstances luke, thicka leaves
a lot of, recruits leave some current, players leave and
at the same time they're moving into a tough much
tougher conference than they've ever been. In before that's a
(53:44):
very challenging set. Of circumstances they took strides last YEAR
and i think they're going to take additional strides. This
year they missed making a bowl game by. One win
if they don't blow a three touchdown lead in the
second half to.
Speaker 6 (53:58):
Pit they're a ball.
Speaker 12 (53:59):
TO tea i think that that is a very reasonable
bar to set for, this year and hopefully they not only,
reached that but they, exceed IT.
Speaker 6 (54:07):
And i think.
Speaker 12 (54:08):
They will they have a, good quarterback they've GOT an nfl,
tight end they've got one of the best defensive linemen
in the country And, the godfather and they brought in
some really good players, in recruiting most notably at. WIDE
receiver i think it's going to be a fun team,
to WATCH and i do expect this team to take
that next step and qualify.
Speaker 6 (54:26):
For a ball.
Speaker 2 (54:26):
This year to, Your, POINT dan i thought it was
significant when Last Offseason dante corleone and some others Came
To scott soaderfield's defense for lack of, better phrasing, they
said we Are Behind scott soaderfield and what he's trying,
to do and that was in light of all of
(54:46):
the criticism that he had taken for that three and.
Nine season, to me that showed me at least that
there were leaders in that program who feel that there
is potential for this thing get turned around and turned,
around quick.
Speaker 12 (55:03):
No doubt and that also applies to this most. Recent Offseason,
Dante Corleone, brendan Soresby And joe royer could have, gone
anywhere just about anywhere they wanted in. THE country i
know for a fact some of the schools that tried
To poach soresby away that were in need of a,
veteran quarterback and these guys stayed because They, like cincinnati
(55:25):
they respect the, coaching STAFF and i think they wanted
to show People That scott sadderfield is very capable of
being Successful.
Speaker 6 (55:33):
At cincinnati so this team's got.
Speaker 12 (55:35):
Great leadership those GUYS that i, Mentioned Throwing gavin gerhardt,
AND others i think they've had an excellent. OFF season
i was impressed by all of the spring football PRACTICES that,
i ATTENDED and i can't wait for them to get
after a.
Speaker 2 (55:49):
Camphire ground we cannot let you out of here without
least at Least one, bengals question and it is regarding
the first round. Draft pick SCHAMARSART and i was able
to evesdrop when you were Recording a Inside the. BOOTH
podcast i believe with Your Partner dave Lapham and lapp
brought up a. GREAT point, i thought when, considering disputes
(56:17):
let's call it disputes between player rookie player in this,
particular case and. The team it's not about. The money
it's about terms. And CONDITIONS and, i, thought oh that
IS such I wish i had thought, Of THAT and
i think that's what this is. Really about and eventually
the terms and THE conditions i believe will get, worked
(56:37):
OUT and I Think shamar stewart will be. IN camp
i happen to believe it'll eventually get worked Out With,
trey hendrickson, but again, to me that's probably more of
a sixty forty likelihood than it is, let's Say, with
schamar it's probably a ninety five percent likelihood he'll be in.
Training camp what are your thoughts On that.
Speaker 12 (56:58):
History tells That the Bengals And shamar stuart will reach.
A deal i hope it's in time for day one
of training CAMP because i hate the fact that he's
missed beyond the field work. So far having, said That
If chamar stewart had a strained handstring and was watching
practices and taking part in. The meetings would we think much.
Speaker 6 (57:21):
Of it.
Speaker 12 (57:23):
Probably not he's, been around he's getting to know his coaches.
And TEAMMATES and i don't want to be a total
homer and suggest that the time he's missed. Is insignificant
the time on the field, that is. It's significant but
if they can get this done in time for the
start of, training camp you've got six weeks of practices still,
(57:43):
To come you've got three preseason games still. To come
what he's missed so far is the least. Important stuff
the most important stuff is still. TO come a deal will.
Get done there's no doubt. About that you said ninety.
FIVE percent i say one. Hundred percent and people that
(58:03):
are floating the idea that he's going to skip his
rookie season and go back into, the draft it's not
worth our time and energy to even talk. About it
nobody's saying That With, travis hunter who, is unsigned as,
You Know heisman, trophy winner top five. Draft pick but
Because the bengals have had a history of, you know,
contract disputes now people are going way overboard for how
(58:28):
serious this. Thing is it's going to. GET done i
wish it were. Done already it's NOT again i hope
it's done by the first day of. TRAINING camp i
think that would give him plenty of time to. Get
ready and it is terms. And conditions they basically know the.
Dollar amount they've got to come to some sort of
compromise or one side got a, buckle on, you know
(58:49):
the clause that would essentially void guaranteed years if he
gets suspended or the violations of something. Like that if
they can work this, stuff out this will all be forgotten.
Speaker 2 (59:00):
VERY quickly i hope you get out to a golf
course in THE next i, don't know forty eight seventy
two hours and shoot a sub. Eighty five? How's that is?
THAT possible i can?
Speaker 12 (59:13):
Do, That yeah i'm capable, Of. That trags that's kind
of my GOAL when. I play so thanks for setting
the bar at a. Realistic.
Speaker 2 (59:21):
Number, Yeah well i'm here to do that and TALK
about uc bearcats that have been offered but not at
actual practice that. You attended that's That's what i'm here.
To Do, dan horde how you doing?
Speaker 5 (59:33):
You good.
Speaker 13 (59:35):
All?
Speaker 6 (59:35):

what Are the reds need to do to show that
they're serious about competing In The National League central they've
played some very good baseball, of late having taken nine
of their last. Twelve games they've won four, straight series
(01:01:10):
and they've Got The Saint louis cardinals for the first

This evening airtime is six to ten On The. Big

(01:01:31):
the reds are dealing with, another injury as it was
announced this afternoon that Left Hander wade miley has been
placed on the fifteen day injured list with a left
flexer strain that's Retroactive to. June seventeenth they Have Recalled,
connor phillips the right hander who's been primarily a RELIEVER
(01:01:51):
FOR Tripa. A louisville he has. Been recalled they also
added Right Hander chase petty to the, taxi squad and
they've Laced Infielder noelve marte with the left oblique strain
on a rehab Assignment for arizona For The, arizona reds
and that will precede some rehab Work WITH Triple a
(01:02:13):
louisville sometime, next Week probably Tuesday. Or wednesday so that,
turns out but that was expected With. Newelve marte but
the big news Left Hander wade miley goes on the
fifteen day injured list with a left. Flexer strain what
Do the reds have? To do What Does nick crawl
have to do to add players to? This roster can
(01:02:36):
he just do? It internally can he just rely on
the players he's got in the? Farm system or does he?
Be bold does he go out and do What The
San francisco. Giants did certainly not on, that scale but
they went out, and, said, okay Well If raphael devers,
is available and all it takes is for us to
(01:02:56):
spend a small fortune on buying out, the contract let's.
Do it that is a team In The San francisco
giants showing their. Fan base yet we're going to do
whatever it takes. To win Will the reds do, something again,
smaller scale but do something like that to add perhaps a,
corner outfielder a corner infielder with, some pop a veteran
(01:03:18):
presence in. The Clubhouse the reds have already done a
pretty good job of adding some veterans in that clubhouse
that have worked. Out Terrific jose travino is certainly one
of the names that comes. To mind they also Have Added.
Austin hayes he's trying to get back on. The field
they don't want to push it too hard with his left,
foot injury but he's another guy that he put in
(01:03:41):
day in and, day out really shows up and adds.
Some Leadership and gavin lux was another NAME that i think,
they added a, veteran presence everyday player who's really added
some good quality to, THAT clubhouse, i THINK and i
set it off the top of this show That With
brian GEESENSLAW. That tj friedel has been doing a, terrific
(01:04:04):
job one of the best leadoff hitters in. The game
So the reds do have, the pieces it's just it
moments like today where a Guy Like, wade miley he's
up there in years obviously when he goes on the,
injured list are they going to have? Enough depth and
THAT'S what i think a Lot of reds fans wonder
about at. This point on the other side of the

nba finals actually Through The Eastern conference finals INTO The. Nba,
finals dustin thank you very much for taking time out
it is the two words. In sports most fans love
to hear. Games seven maybe not the coaches, And, players
(01:06:52):
dustin but certainly the fans are looking Forward to sunday
Night In. Oklahoma city it should, be great, great, theater yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:07:01):
For sure and the players.
Speaker 14 (01:07:02):
ARE too, I mean, i mean you don't look, foot
well you don't want to hear game seven when you
had a chance to win a, game six generally that's, you, know, you're,
you're you're you're really rather get. It done nobody. Wants
to if you have an opportunity to pot, somebody out
you want to do. It beforehand but if, you didn't if,
you were, you know the team with two wins going into,
game six game seven is the best thing that you could.
(01:07:22):
Possibly hear just get them the Shot at and obviously that's.
The case the paces, are in, you know having been
in a position where they had to win to force,
game seven so they're obviously static to be there and have,
the opportunity and, you know just and, you know even
though they had to do it on, the road they
have to go out and do it on, the road
and having a chance is a. Big deal they obviously
showed up. Big time last night in their last home
(01:07:43):
games of, the year to make sure they weren't watching
somebody else celebrate on their.
Speaker 2 (01:07:47):
HOME court i must tell you that when the game
started ten To Two, oklahoma City and i'm sitting on
my Couch and, i'm, like Well Maybe I'm dustin tomorrow,
on tomorrow wrapping UP the, nba season wrapping up a
great run For The, indiana pacers and. THEN boom i
think the run was something like twenty to five something in.
(01:08:08):
That neighborhood pacers took complete control of, that game and
what impressed me was they Didn't let oklahoma sniff competitiveness
the rest of. That game they were up ninety to
sixty by the end of the, third quarter, and that
to me showed me That the pacers mentally were ready
to take care of business going into.
Speaker 5 (01:08:29):
That.
Speaker 14 (01:08:29):
Game, yeah no, THEY absolutely I mean i think. They
did they did a good job of just so. Many
things and obviously it's just big to be able to
rally like that when you do. START slow i think
they must missed the first seven shots of. The GAME
and I mean i can get you out of, you
know out of, kilter basically if you feel like you've
got a good game plan the. OTHER day i mean
a lot of times it is just to make it.
Miss league and when, you miss when you, miss shots
(01:08:49):
you start to. Question things you start to, you know,
you know lose, some confidence that kind, of thing start,
to wonder to worry if the ball is just not
going in for you. That day but they, weathered THAT
and i think there was obviously and there was that.
Going on And, Obviously Tyerson harry saliburn coach comes, In
there you're not totally sure what kind of shape he's
going to be in playing through the store right PATH
or i thought he did a really good job of
figuring out just getting other people, going first, you, know
(01:09:12):
distributing hitting a couple of guys up and teeing them
up for a. Good shots and, You Know andrew themhart hit,
the three AND then, I think i think them hard
hit two in, a ROW and i think they got
another three from, somebody else and all of a sudden
they were right back in. That thing and from that
point forward they just truly doubted. IT up i thought
defensively made it a Fantastic job Anton THEM mart i
thought was Incredible Against Shay yogis alexander in. THIS game
i thought it did a really really good job of
(01:09:33):
sort of mixing up the kind of pressure they were,
bringing in the double teams they were, bringing in just
how much they'd made it difficult on him And On,
jalen williams both of those guys after just an absolute
spectacular perfumans between them in game five were pretty well
muted in, game six a lot of impressive, work there but,
just yeah they did a good job of just turning.
Things completely the turnover battle was. DRAMATICALLY different, i mean
(01:09:55):
everything that you need to do to find a way
to beat the thunder they.
Speaker 3 (01:09:58):
Did WELL and i think.
Speaker 2 (01:09:59):
You bring up an, awesome point and that's why we
have You on nemhart's defense AGAINST THE nba mvp in
a game where they had to. Have it where the,
season ended to me was the story of. The Night
tyrese haliburton certainly playing with the right. Calf strain you
understand that the significance. Of that but if they don't
(01:10:23):
find some way to shut down a guy like that
with that kind, of talent WITH the nba championship on,
the line they're not going to win. The game and,
To Me andrew nemhart coming through like that was just a. Great, storyline, no.
Speaker 14 (01:10:38):
Absolutely and especially because he didn't close game, FIVE well
i mean he had a lot of trouble with Just
defending shay in, game FIVE but, i mean more to,
the point he had a. Major turnover iss he's had
four turnovers and they were. BAD ones i mean three,
OF them i think we're live ball and went back for.
Easy buckets they had to just just ugly ones who
was kind of throwing the, ball backwards, you know towards
the timeline and got him kicked off and went back
(01:10:59):
for kind of easy, picked sixes, you know late late in,
the game basically when they were still kind of. Hanging
around but that those plays Really Helped oklahoma city put
that put that. Game away and so those were killer
and so And, obviously memoir though is, A guy, i mean,
you know like he truly ice ice in his main type.
Of guy, you know like he's just, totally unflappable just
not a whole lot, of it doesn't show a whole
(01:11:21):
lot of emotion, other than, you know not afraid to
fight you in whatever way you want that. To be,
and so, you know it was it was not surprising
that he was able to. Do that he's certainly been
able to do that in. The past, you know it's
made him a great playoff players that even Though, even
knights when he doesn't shoot the ball very, well overall
he might just hit one that's a backbreaker or something.
(01:11:42):
Like that and he's come through in so many big
opportunities and big situations over the last two seasons in.
These playoffs so it wasn't it wasn't that much of,
a surprise but it's still really important that he was
able to do that so many. Things, well defensively just
did a really good career job of wall and. Shay
OFF but i thought they messed around with. SOME things,
i mean they they'd really full court pressure in a
lot and they kind of dive that back a, little
(01:12:02):
bit but, you know also made the court feel smaller
once they got into the. Half court it seemed like
he just had nowhere. To go and, you know they
were bringing up really smart double teams. For Shit but
menmar just did a really good job of, you know,
bothering him getting up into him and, not fouling and
that's really really difficult to DO out i think he
picked up his first file until about seven minutes to
go in the, third quarter and against the guy that
plays the Way that, shay does and how good he
(01:12:24):
is at taking advantage of you getting your body just
slightly out of place or putting your hand somewhere where
it's just not supposed to be and drawing a touchout
to be able to avoid that for you, know what
twenty seven minutes. Of basketball he was probably on the
floor for like twenty. Of that, but still, you know
that's that's pretty.
Speaker 2 (01:12:43):
REMARKABLE stuff i think everybody knows that the biggest factor
or the biggest storyline to being up thirty points ninety
to sixty after the third quarter Was Giving tyrese Haliburton
and Rick carl carlisle having the ability To give tyrese
calib and the rest of the game off rest the.
Right calf what is his Status for? Sunday night is
(01:13:06):
he going to be better off than he would have
been had, he been, you know pressed to the Limit in?
Speaker 3 (01:13:12):
GAME six i.
Speaker 14 (01:13:14):
PRESUME yes i mean obviously it's it's, you know a
calf can be aware and. Tear issue you can make
it work if you're make it worse if you really
trying to push off. Of it, you know he's certainly
going to have two more days of time to work.
Speaker 5 (01:13:25):
On.
Speaker 14 (01:13:25):
It obviously the difference is he does have. To travel
he doesn't have to get on, a plane. YOU know
i certainly had had to get up on a plane
off after game five. As, well uh, you know he's
not going to be in his. Own home he's gonna be.
A hotel, you know they, he did, you know, he
said basically had trainers come to. His house basically he
was or even when he WAS like i think sitting
and watching, you KNOW uh tv with, his girlfriend he
(01:13:45):
was still putting, you know an h wave machine on
his leg to try to improve as much. As possibly
then the hyper it was in a hyperbaric chamber chamber
at least once each of the last. Three days so,
you know he's gonna have more time to rest but
also to treat and that should make. Things better but
it's definitely, you know not having to tax it for
that last for the fourth quarter is. Really helpful and
(01:14:08):
any any way that you could take some stress off
of the thing is going to make. A difference, i
mean it's still a, cap string, You KNOW and i
don't expect him to look one. HUNDRED percent i don't
expect him to be as explosive as he'd want. To be,
YOU know i, expect you'll if you're watching, him closely
you'll still notice that there are things that he's not.
Comfortable doing and, YOU know I mean i, ASKED him
i said that you you know when you talk to
(01:14:29):
the doctors that you come to a conclusion there's no
risk of. You playing, he, SAID no i did not
come to. That conclusion basically that that's not what was told.
TO me i know there's, a risk, You Know i'm
i'm aware, of THIS but i would really regret IT
if i. Didn't play.
Speaker 12 (01:14:41):
And so, you know like he he, knows that.
Speaker 14 (01:14:44):
You know, like again like the LAST time i remember
there being somebody playing with the cap string IN the,
nba finals That Was kevin duranty ended up With an kelly's,
tenant there and that's really not what. You want you
know that that's that's not a trade off that's, worth
it because you're talking about all of next year if
that were to go. That, POORLY so, i mean he
is trying to make sure that he's being smart about what,
he's doing, you know not try to make moves that
(01:15:05):
stress it in a way that don't, feel tenable but
he's still finding a way to play within that and
get the most out. OF himself i thought you did
a fantastic job of that the, other day and again
it is definitely helpful that they were, able to, you
know get some time to let him rest a little
bit more and not tax it to the. N's degree,
LAST night.
Speaker 2 (01:15:23):
I will tell YOU that i had a chance to
Cover a game seven OF The nba finals Twenty ten Lakers.

poe Perriri of sports joining me my good friend and
Colleague at Sealing s sincey, Dot Com. Alex frank how,
You doing alex On this.
Speaker 13 (01:19:29):
Friday, Afternoon, Well mike, i'm great especially now that, we
have for just the fifth time this Century a game
seven IN The Nba final. Sunday Night and i've never
seen a team ploy as well As The indiana pacers
did last night. Facing elimination that was an, incredible performance
and it's so great to see a team embrace not
(01:19:53):
only their city but their state the Way the pacers Have.
Embraced Indiana Whereas rick carlisle said in forty, nine states
it's just Basketball, in indiana IT'S all.
Speaker 11 (01:20:04):
I mean but This, is indiana.
Speaker 2 (01:20:06):
It's life basketball is Life.
Speaker 3 (01:20:09):
In indiana you're, absolutely.
Speaker 13 (01:20:11):
RIGHT and I mean i can attest to that having
Been to indianapolis For the. SWEET sixteen, i, mean look
basketball's Big in kentucky as we Know right indiana.
Speaker 11 (01:20:22):
IT is, i mean it's a way of life.
Speaker 5 (01:20:24):
Over there it.
Speaker 13 (01:20:25):
Truly is and there's no question in my Mind the
pacers Can win game Seven on.
Speaker 11 (01:20:30):
Sunday night well.
Speaker 2 (01:20:33):
They Can If tyrese haliburton can overcome his right calf
strain and play the way he did for three quarters.
Last night let me ask, You, something okay when the
game was ten to two, early on did you have a, sense,
That well indiana gave it all they could and they're
just going to run.
Speaker 3 (01:20:53):
Out again did you?
Speaker 2 (01:20:54):
Have That because i'll, Be, honest okay that thought entered
my mind sitting on the couch in my very, comfortable, Home,
thinking okay this is.
Speaker 3 (01:21:04):
The series it's gonna.
Speaker 2 (01:21:05):
End tonight And then indiana makes, Their run Alex and, i'm,
thinking okay maybe this will be A special, game six
and then it completely tilts the. Other way and it becomes,
a Blowout and, i'm, like oh by, BY halftime i
was bored with, the, game UNFORTUNATELY and i would Just
Had dustin pierac Of indie Star, dot com beat writer For,
(01:21:28):
THE pacers i asked him exactly. That point how did
that game when you're watching, it, switch switch and swing. So, DRAMATICALLY.
Speaker 13 (01:21:39):
Well i definitely did have that thought Because Considering, tyree's
halliburton he clearly was hampered BY that caf and you
know he could still Be.
Speaker 11 (01:21:49):
On sunday but that team just has a way of
they just have a way.
Speaker 3 (01:21:56):
Of overcoming they have, A will they have a will about.
Speaker 13 (01:21:59):
Them themselves they have, a will they have, a resolve
they have a resilience to THEM that i have not
seen in a lot of. OTHER teams, I mean i
saw it in, twenty sixteen the last time there Was
a game Seven, with CLEVELAND but i haven't seen. It
since and it's refreshing to see a team like that
because they have been the lower seed now in three,
(01:22:22):
straight series and they were only one seed higher Than
the bucks in the first round of, the playoffs so
they've been underdogs this. Entire time they've been underdogs pretty
season if you think. About it and yet they have
been just. Incredibly resilient they've overcome so many obstacles in,
their way and here they are one win away FROM an.
(01:22:46):
Nba title, There first this is the first time in
their history that they are in a position where if
they win the, next game WIN the, nba title because
they weren't.
Speaker 11 (01:22:58):
That position in two thousand when They Fay is Kobe
and shack And.
Speaker 5 (01:23:01):
The lakers they are.
Speaker 13 (01:23:02):
This time and it's not like there's any, you know
past historical dynasty that they're facing the thunder because they're
also going for at least their first Championship In. Oklahoma
city so all bets are off when it Comes to
game Seven On.
Speaker 2 (01:23:18):
Sunday night anything, Can, Happen alex anything can happen In a.
Speaker 3 (01:23:22):
Game seven, They, Say.
Speaker 13 (01:23:24):
Oh i'm in. TOTAL agreement i am in total agreement
when it comes to anything can happen In a. Game
seven and.
Speaker 11 (01:23:31):
We've seen a lot of great ones over.
Speaker 13 (01:23:33):
The years, you yourself as you've, told me We're at
game seven and twenty ten With the Celtics and lakers
At The, staples Center when kobe And the lakers went back,
to back and that was a lower scoring game until
Ron our test went insane in the. Fourth QUARTER so,
I mean i'm not sure what's going To happen. Sunday
NIGHT all i can say is the anticipation is palpable
(01:23:56):
here In the midwest and The tri state Heading into.
Speaker 11 (01:23:59):
SUNDAY night i, YOU.
Speaker 2 (01:24:00):
Know I think indiana's going to go nuts if they win.
That game you know that fan base HAS been i
don't want to say, long suffering but they've never WON an.
Nba title they, WON six, I believe, aba titles but
they've as, you mentioned they've only been to ONE other,
Nba FINAL and i think it would just mean so
much for the State of indiana if they were to
(01:24:23):
win that title and win, the championship it Would be
indiana's second major, sports title, the other, of course Being
The super bowl back When the colts Beat The. Chicago
BEARS and i believe That Was super bowl forty Four
if i'm. Remembering, correctly, somebody, WELL no i think that
(01:24:45):
was when they lost To. The saints It Was super
bowl forty one when they Beat The. Chicago bears so
that would be the only Other time indianapolis has celebrated
a major sports title in any of the. FOUR sports
i think That And dustin zepirak made this point with
me a couple of. Minutes ago as Much As tyrese
(01:25:07):
haliburton playing through a, sore calf a right calf last
night was a, big deal It Was. Andrew nemhart the
job he Did On, Shay Gilligis alexander SGA THE, nba mvp,
to me was a storyline of.
Speaker 5 (01:25:24):
The game it was a.
Speaker 11 (01:25:26):
Big storyline and it wasn't. Just him it was The entire.
Speaker 13 (01:25:29):
Pacers defense their on ball defense was spectacular, last night
the way they were able to get steals and get
out and transition. And run as soon As Si Yakam
pascal siakam threw down that dunk late in the, first
half it kind of felt like that was a cementing
of the fact that we are going to a game
seven IN These. Nba finals and you bring up a,
Great point mike about when it Comes to indianapolis and
(01:25:51):
sports championships. They've WON and i remember that colts team
in two thousand, and six Led By peyton Manning And
marvin Harrison And Reggie, wayne DUNGEE and i remember how
revered that team Was, In Indianapolis peyton manning wait the
green flag At the indy five hundred of The following
may and the build up to the. Next season and
(01:26:11):
you know how big those, teams were and yes they,
Were revered.
Speaker 11 (01:26:17):
But this is different to Me because indiana it's a.
Speaker 13 (01:26:21):
BASKETBALL state, i mean They're playing hoosiers on the big
board last Night Inside gamebridge fieldhouse during. THE game, i
mean this is a huge deal for the State, of
Indiana The hoosier state And. The PACERS and i mean
if they do WIN The, nba finals if they WIN
The nba Championship on, SUNDAY night, i mean it is
(01:26:45):
going to be, an unreal surreal scene In The circle
city come next week when they have the.
Speaker 2 (01:26:51):
Victory parade the other Thing Is, oklahoma City alex and
you know this. Very well they won sixty eight games.
This year they were really the odds on favorite When
the celtics, Went Out When jason tatum blew out his
achilles when they, WENT out i think the, Assumption, was
okay nobody's going to Really Challenge, oklahoma city And if
(01:27:14):
indiana Or the knicks, get there it's going to be
five six. Games MAYBE and i think a lot of
fans around, the country sports fans in general are surprised
that the series is Going to game Seven on.
Speaker 3 (01:27:28):
Sunday night you're.
Speaker 11 (01:27:30):
Absolutely right and to prove, that point which is a really.
Speaker 13 (01:27:33):
Good one, ian O'Connor who is one of my all
time favorite authors and sports talk, show hosts he said
last night Quote for, knicks fans whatever Happens in, game
seven the great shame of these finals is the Fact
that pacers have proven that sixty EIGHT win okc. Was
beatable it's got hurt to, wash this, And myself mike
(01:27:54):
Is a, KNICKS fan i resonated with THAT because i
did not think that the Where the pacers were going
to be legitimate challengers To. The thunder but the way
That the pacers have been able to play defensively and
Make the thunder really have to grind out.
Speaker 5 (01:28:10):
This, series now.
Speaker 13 (01:28:11):
Given they played In a Game Seven oklahoma City, against
denver they blew them out though they're getting pushed HERE
and i don't think that they were.
Speaker 11 (01:28:17):
Expecting that and it just goes to show you that
this is why you play. THE games, i mean games
aren't played.
Speaker 13 (01:28:25):
ON paper i mean you look At the cavs in
twenty sixteen when they beat that seventy Three win. Warriors
Team golin state was a much better team UNTIL The
nba finals When the cavaliers had the best Player In.
Speaker 11 (01:28:36):
Lebron james and it showed To my.
Speaker 13 (01:28:38):
Sunday night it's gonna be which team's best player shows
up when it. Matters most i'm gonna Say that i'm
gonna put my trust In Shag.
Speaker 11 (01:28:46):
Gilgess alexander because he is the best player in.
Speaker 13 (01:28:50):
The series BUT then i think The tyrees halliburtn has
been the most flutched player in. These playoffs, so again
all bets. Are off anything can Happen in Game seven, SUNDAY.
Speaker 2 (01:29:00):
Night i will, tell, YOU okay i will come back
With that, lebron Argument and i'm not trying to Hate On.
Lebron james the Reason the cavaliers Won that game seven
in twenty Sixteen Was kyrie irving in the. Fourth, Court
Yeh kyrie irving was the Reason the cavaliers managed to
Pull out game seven because they were down And when
(01:29:23):
kyrie went off and took control of, that game it
was All About kyrie irving And The, cleveland cavaliers and
he hit two or three of the BIGGEST shots i
ever recall in a game seven back to back, to
Back and, I'm, Like okay cleveland's gonna win. This game
and THAT'S when i think the basketball world fell in
Love With. KYRIE irving i wonder if there's someone On
(01:29:44):
the pacers who could be. Like that is It An,
andrew nemhart Is It, tyrese haliburton or is it someone
else we're not. THINKING of I love, tj McConnell but
i don't know if he's going to be on the.
Court necessarily, all right let's. Switch gear Talking With alex
Frank Of sealing us since The, Dot com let's switch
(01:30:05):
gears To The cincinnati reds news Today That wade miley
is going on the injured list with a left. Flexer
stream They Recalled, connor phillips the former, top PROSPECT and
i guess he'd consider him still a big time prospect
With the reds recalled Him FROM Triple. A louisville They've
Added chase petty to the. Taxi squad those are three
(01:30:28):
big moves Regarding the. Reds pitching what do you make?
Of this and do You Think connor phillips is going
to go right to, the bullpen or could he, you
know be an emergency ad to.
Speaker 3 (01:30:40):
The rotation what do you think is going to?
Speaker 13 (01:30:41):
Happen, here well first, Of all i'm not overly Concerned
About whay miley going to.
Speaker 11 (01:30:48):
The angelist obviously.
Speaker 13 (01:30:49):
It's disappointing you wish the best, for HIM because i
think he was really starting to get things going a little.
Speaker 11 (01:30:54):
Bit over his last.
Speaker 13 (01:30:56):
TWO starts i think this team still has the, pitching
depth particularly and the starting rotation, overcome this Especially If
hunter green. Returns, soon now of course we don't know
when that's going. To be but as Far As, CONNOR phillips,
i mean this is interesting because he's, Called Up chase
petty's added to the. Taxi squad now you have, to,
think well who's gonna? Start tomorrow miley was scheduled to
(01:31:18):
Start on Saturday In, saint louis which is now less
than twenty four, Hours away so you have to wonder
care they're gonna. Go bullpen the last time they, DID
that i think it worked out pretty well, for THEM
if i remember Against the. Guardians, CORRECTLY so, i, mean
look it's another hit to the, pitching depth and that's.
A concern it's a concern for, Every team but given
(01:31:40):
the Way That andrew rabbits throwing, the ball and given
The Way nick lodolo Pitched, on wednesday which was really
impressive after a long, rain delay and then the first
pitch was a home Run From, Byron buxton i'm not
overly concerned. Just yet i'm intrigued to see what they
Do With connor phillips if he goes to, the bullpen
to the insert him as like a fourth or. Fifth
starter so this series we're going to really learn a
(01:32:02):
lot about again this team's ability to overcome injuries to their.
Speaker 11 (01:32:06):
STARTING pitching i think they have the chops to.
Speaker 13 (01:32:08):
Do it it's just going to be interesting to see
how this impacts them long term because the schedule coming
up is still.
Speaker 11 (01:32:14):
Pretty Difficult saint louis, this Weekend the yankees. Next Week,
san diego who's playing, really well comes in.
Speaker 13 (01:32:20):
Next weekend then you Go, to boston then you Go,
to philadelphia so you're gonna have.
Speaker 11 (01:32:26):
To Again terry frankcon has done a great job.
Speaker 13 (01:32:29):
With this roster and this lineup this Month, of june
getting them to three games over five hundred in position
to be.
Speaker 11 (01:32:34):
In contention. That's great this is just another roadblock along
the way in.
Speaker 2 (01:32:39):
My opinion, all right let's take a Look At connor
phillips in the minors. This year, fourteen appearances all, in
relief one in two three point two to one er a.
Speaker 3 (01:32:52):
For two in.
Speaker 2 (01:32:52):
SAVE opportunities i, just think, you know you're talking about
a picture who last year made nineteen Starts for louisville
and the year before that when he made his only major,
league appearance he had fourteen Starts AT Double, a chattanooga
and he had ten of his eleven appearances where Starts
(01:33:14):
WITH Triple. A louisville the point, Being, here alex he's
primarily been that. A starter are they going to transition
him into a reliever to help with?
Speaker 3 (01:33:25):
The, bullpen.
Speaker 13 (01:33:27):
Well you mentioned his numbers and at three point TWO,
one era it IS something i like win. Loss record
i'm not too concerned with over to and. Save, opportunities
yeah that obviously is, not great but he's not going
to be primarily a closer up here if he gets to.
The BULLPEN so i think what you're seeing with him
as he can be a starter, than like, you know when,
(01:33:48):
your bullpen You Want connor phillips to be able to
go at least four. OR five i means to kind
of make the bullpen not.
Speaker 11 (01:33:55):
Have to pitch as.
Speaker 13 (01:33:56):
MANY innings i think you can kind of ease him
along if he's to stay up here for a lengthy period.
Of time if he proves, himself great then you have,
another arm whether it be as a, long reliever a,
middle reliever whether it he's someone.
Speaker 11 (01:34:09):
Like your fifth or fourth or, fifth starter, excuse me that.
Speaker 13 (01:34:12):
Can go if that can go four or, five innings
that can give you some deep that can shorten the
game a little bit for your bullpen and not have
to make them pitch as long and get as.
Speaker 11 (01:34:21):
Many OUTS because i was thinking about.
Speaker 13 (01:34:24):
THIS yesterday, i mean we're getting to Fourth, of july
and this is the time of the season where teams
really start to establish who they are as far.
Speaker 11 (01:34:33):
As the contending tiers and the hierarchy.
Speaker 13 (01:34:35):
Are concerned so a Guy Like, connor phillips who's been
at this, level before and he's obviously pitched THE, double A.
Triple a as, you mentioned this is a proved time,
for him and if he does prove it this, time
around that's only going to Benefit this reds. Team More
and i'm excited to see what he can do in
this series and over the next week.
Speaker 2 (01:34:55):
Or so do you think they have to take two
or Three From saint louis?
Speaker 5 (01:34:58):
This?
Speaker 13 (01:34:59):
Weekend, OH absolutely I mean i agree if they had
Swept the TWINS and i was at all three Games
against minnesota and they look, even yesterday it wasn't a.
Speaker 11 (01:35:09):
Great game let's. BE honest i never felt like the
rest were throwing.
Speaker 13 (01:35:12):
IT in, i mean they tried to make that game
closer Throughout just minnesota got ten other twelve runs with
two miles.
Speaker 11 (01:35:19):
YOU kick, i, mean look that's just really. Really good,
but yeah you have to take two out.
Speaker 13 (01:35:23):
Of three it's a, Divisional. Series mike you have to
Go Into saint louis and find a way to win
two out.
Speaker 5 (01:35:28):
Of three?
Speaker 13 (01:35:29):
Do that come back home Face the Yankees. And, padres
hey you, know what let's see. What happens this team
is still in position to be, in contention and THAT'S
where i think we wanted Them come.
Speaker 2 (01:35:42):
June, twentieth well and the problem and you know We
Had brian geesenslaw Of Fan Duel sports Network and red's
live pre and postgame show on at the top of.
This show this afternoon at, three o'clock and we both
stress the fact that they've got to improve on their
ten and thirteen record Within The National. League CENTRAL that's,
(01:36:04):
i mean if you really want to be serious, about contending,
you know maybe forget About the cubs.
Speaker 3 (01:36:11):
Right now just get to.
Speaker 2 (01:36:12):
The playoffs you're gonna have to improve upon that and
get AT least i would say a couple of games above,
five hundred and that can start, this weekend no question.
Speaker 13 (01:36:23):
About it and How about sam, deal THOUGH because i
want to make a Point real beals on.
Speaker 11 (01:36:29):
This, week, okay perfect IT'S all i need. Two, Minutes, Okay,
SO mike a lot Of.
Speaker 13 (01:36:32):
People, Bengals fans i'm sure you've seen them Interacting, on twitter.
Social media they, you know they say like rate the,
off season grade the. Off season Here's why i'm, gonna
say it's been a success. So far and look are
the moves they could. Still, Make absolutely but the success Of.
Speaker 11 (01:36:49):
The bengals off season depends on what you wanted them.
Speaker 13 (01:36:52):
TO do i think we got so used To the
bengals making moves externally that weren't within. The team already
going out and free agents from other teams the last few.
Off seasons but after this season where they were so
close to the playoffs and so close in so. Many
games if you flip half the games, they lost they're twelve.
And FIVE they're afc, nor champions and they're a three
(01:37:13):
seed or. Two seed, even so when you have, that
happen it's so easy.
Speaker 11 (01:37:17):
To, say well they need to, do this this. And
this but if you, do that that may send a
message that you.
Speaker 13 (01:37:22):
Don't trust what you already have on, your team and
what they have on THEIR team i think is a pretty.
Good roster so that's Where the bengals have. GOTTEN better
i think, by addition. By subtraction they changed coaches on
their defensive staff earlier, this offseason plus they have a
new offensive.
Speaker 11 (01:37:36):
Line coach They.
Speaker 13 (01:37:38):
Extended jamar Chasen, T Higgins sam, hubber retired They Cut,
sheldon recus The Cut, alex kappa they released Your. Main
pratt they have gotten rid of their, weaknesses internally and they've,
Said okay Mike is siggy's To start. Boom Extension JAMAR
Jason t Higgins Stars Boom. Boom Extensions trey henderson is
the only. One left so in, a way their SUCCESS
has I think they've had a successful offseason because they
(01:38:01):
have fortified their strengths and they've gotten rid of their.
Weaknesses internally did they not make a lot of?
Speaker 11 (01:38:06):
External?
Speaker 13 (01:38:07):
Moves yes should they have made, More maybe but again
we got so used to that the last few, off
seasons then maybe we just. EXPECTED that i think this
off season for me Has, been okay what Are the,
bengals strengths what are? Their weaknesses let's solidify, the strengths
get rid of. The weaknesses they've. Done that the only
move left for me Is Signing troy henderson to a
(01:38:27):
long term extension and Obviously Getting shamar.
Speaker 5 (01:38:29):
Stewart signed, all right He.
Speaker 2 (01:38:30):

rotation and into the Bullpen or with the News Of wade,
miley today he stays right where he is because he
has given you innings, five, one, three, seven, four nine.

(01:44:17):
zero what Should the reds Do About? Nick martinez are
you happy With Where nick martinez is uh in the
pitching staff For, the reds and that is namely in.
THE rotation i think it's pretty clear he's going to
have to, stay there especially with today's News That wade
miley is headed to the injured list with a left.
(01:44:39):
Flexer Strain the reds are going, to, be obviously given
his age and his, injury history very Careful With. Wade
miley they're not going to. Rush him So the reds
have made a couple of, moves today and that IS
Namely uh They've Added chase petty to the. Taxi squad
that means he can travel with, the team designated to
(01:45:03):
make the start Tomorrow in saint louis in Place Of,
wade miley who was supposed To start saturday Against. The
cardinals they've also recalled Right Hander connor Phillips FROM Triple
a louisville and he will be added to. The bullpen
he has appeared in fourteen games this Year FOR Triple
a louisville and the former minor league starter who made
(01:45:27):
his major league debut in twenty, twenty three making five
starts For. The reds he will be used out of. The,
bullpen also some news pregame and this was Expected Infielder,
noelve marte dealing with that left, obligue strain he has
been placed on rehab on a rehab assignment With The.
(01:45:48):
Arizona reds he'll appear in about three or four games
with Them in arizona and then he'll join the Team In, Saint.
Paul minnesota join, THE team i, should Say JOIN Triple
a Louisville In, Saint paul minnesota sometime, next week Begin
A triple a rehab there for a couple, of games
and if that, goes well we could be looking at
(01:46:09):
a week and a half two Weeks for Noel ve
marte to Rejoin, the reds but, really yesterday anybody who
watched that. Game, knows unfortunately this main storyline For the
Reds Was nick martinez kind of getting lit up again
seven runs all earned on seven hits in just two
(01:46:30):
and two. Thirds, INNINGS certainly I Think terry francona would
have loved to Have left martinez in to chew up
as few of those innings so that he didn't have
to use so much of the bullpen heading in To
The Saint louis series beginning tonight at seven fifteen GAME,
on wlw by, the way but that wasn't. The case
(01:46:51):
he just couldn't Stay With nick martinez and early on
in that game and have any realistic chance of Sweeping,
the TWINS which I think francona thought was possible given the.
Starting Picture chris paddock was on the mound kind of
getting lit up By the reds early on in. That
game but as it, turned Out the Reds and francona
(01:47:13):
had To lift martinez out of. That game he gave
up a career high tying three home runs for the second.
Straight start he's given up nine home runs in the last.
Five starts that's not a Good, stat obviously some of
that Is great american, ballpark related but not all. Of
it so after, The Game terry francona, was asked what
(01:47:36):
went Wrong With nick martinez and where Do the reds go?
From Here with martinez martinez.
Speaker 6 (01:47:43):
TROUBLES today i.
Speaker 3 (01:47:45):
Thought he had.
Speaker 16 (01:47:46):
GOOD stuff i thought he made some mistakes and he
paid heavily.
Speaker 5 (01:47:50):
For him.
Speaker 16 (01:47:52):
It seemed like that was kind of trend, all day even,
you know even on a couple in when we had two,
quick outs we couldn't get a third out and end
up driving everybody's pitch count up and led, to runs
and it led to kind of an ugly day.
Speaker 17 (01:48:05):
Mid season now every pitcher is going to go through
a stretch for this back to. Back games he's giving
up three home runs as it kind of maybe pausing
reflec time, for him or is it just one OF
those i don't.
Speaker 3 (01:48:15):
Think there's time.
Speaker 16 (01:48:16):
TO reflect, i mean you better if you're going, to
reflect you better do. It quick he's pitching it against.
Pretty soon he just, you, know again when you're when
you're not doing, ninety eight your margin for ayers a little.
Bit less he just made. SOME mistakes i thought his
stuff was. Really good his breaking ball was. Very good
he just he just didn't locate like he. Needs to
coming From The.
Speaker 17 (01:48:35):
Al center i'm sure you've seen the capability of so
bucks and many times.
Speaker 3 (01:48:39):
Too much, Too much and.
Speaker 16 (01:48:44):
That's one of those where if you're on if he's on,
your team you can really. Admire it when you're on the,
other team not.
Speaker 3 (01:48:50):
SO fun i was there for that.
Speaker 2 (01:48:54):
Postgame interview it was three Questions From Van Duel's Sports Networks,
jim day and that there was not a lot to
say about a twelve to five loss at home To The. Minnesota,
TWINS still, i mean let's not paint too negative a.
Picture Here the reds are thirty nine and. Thirty six
they've won four, Straight series they've won nine of. Twelve
(01:49:15):
overall they're doing what a lot of fans had been
hoping they would do and then start putting together a
longer string of. Successful baseball forget, the fans a lot
Of What terry francona and the team wanted to see
from this team from the start of, spring training what.
They expected they're starting to put. That together, but this
(01:49:37):
no question, about it is a critical series For The
reds division team on the road in a situation where
you got to take two out of Three From, saint
louis a team that is just one slim game ahead
of you for third place IN The, nl central and
if you have any aspirations of making a run at,
(01:49:57):
the postseason you've got to take two out. Of, Three,
here hey full marks To the reds for taking two
out of Three, in cleveland two out of three from
MLB's best team, record wise In The. Detroit tigers all well.
And good Those Are american league teams you're not battling
with for. Playoff Position The Saint louis cardinals you're definitely
(01:50:17):
battling with for, playoff position and you're going to have
to pass them to Get, to milwaukee to eventually get
To The philadelphia pillies who are currently in a wild,
card spot to get To The San francisco giants who
Are In San, diego padres who are currently in wild.
Card spots if you have, any aspirations you have got
(01:50:38):
to start beating teams ahead of you in your. Own
league and THAT'S what i think this weekend. Is about
well after, The Game nick martinez also had some reaction
to his outing not going as he. Had Hoped, ON thursday.
Speaker 3 (01:50:54):
Pto was talking about he thought you your stuff was,
good today it was just the more. About location you agree. With, that,
YEAH yeah i agree.
Speaker 15 (01:51:00):
With that uh stuff, felt good, you know it was attacking,
the zone, but uh definitely made.
Speaker 5 (01:51:06):
Some mistakes you.
Speaker 4 (01:51:07):
Had stretched up like very few home, runs allowed and
how you've HAD like i think the eight or so
in the last four, or.
Speaker 15 (01:51:13):
Five have you been able to pickpoint where things aren't
going right for you and they'll Look at, UH yeah
i think it just comes down. To execution, You know
i'm giving up the long ball and some hard contact
and that's gonna come down to, to location.
Speaker 3 (01:51:25):
The execution it seem like they were.
Speaker 10 (01:51:30):
Having success being aggressive kind of when you made.
Speaker 15 (01:51:32):
Those. Pictions, Yeah, yeah uh they were definitely on top.
Speaker 5 (01:51:35):
Of, it.
Speaker 15 (01:51:38):
Yeah they did a good job capitalized can when you
do anything.
Speaker 3 (01:51:41):
Like that uh, like this how aware are you how
hot Red hot? Buxton?
Speaker 15 (01:51:46):
IS yeah i mean he's a pretty good player and
he's shown that the last. Three games, you know he's
did some pretty good swings on.
Speaker 5 (01:51:56):
The ball what were all pretty good about the?
Speaker 15 (01:51:59):
Home, Stay, yeah uh, series win that's what it's what's what's?
All about so, YOU know i like to get, a
win but, you know take to get a series win
is is?
Speaker 2 (01:52:10):
What matters do you, feel ye any adjustments you need
to make are pretty minor at.
Speaker 5 (01:52:15):
This point, You, KNOW yeah I think.
Speaker 15 (01:52:17):
I do i think it's more of just, the, focus
right more of a more of a focus thing. Than anything,
you know the pitch shapes, Are there my mechanics, feel
good our body. Feels good just, gotta uh, you know
nar narrow down the focus a.
Speaker 5 (01:52:29):
Little bit they're, gonna go uh today obviously, go well but.
Speaker 3 (01:52:34):
Do you guys are stacking wins shacking? A?
Speaker 15 (01:52:36):
Series now how big would be to get one in
the division where it feels like that's been a little
bit harder to?
Speaker 5 (01:52:42):
Come By this uh you know this. Is. Easy, yeah
yeah we're playing really.
Speaker 15 (01:52:46):
GREAT baseball i mean we ten, hits today, five runs so,
you know it's just a game that you. Should win and,
YOU know i didn't didn't help in any matter.
Speaker 3 (01:52:53):
For that but it's part.
Speaker 5 (01:52:55):
Of it just gotta.
Speaker 15 (01:52:56):
KEEP going, i uh, but yeah we're winning games and
we're playing really good baseb on, everyone's INVESTED like i
talked about the, other day, And yeah that's that's. Most important,
you know we're still walking out of here with a,
series win, you know against a team that expects to
me in. The playoffs so we're playing some.
Speaker 2 (01:53:13):
GOOD baseball I Think nick martinez realizes his expectations and
the expectations of fans a little, bit higher and he
has to rise to. Those expectations after becoming The first
red to surrender at least three homers in consecutive starts
and consecutive Outings Since Tanner rourke july second through the
