Speaker 1 (00:43):
Marte is playing third base. Florence takes on the Washington
wild Things on the road tonight, and FC Cincinnati headed
to Miami to take on Miami. Because that's why you
would go to Miami to play Miami if you're a
soccer team. Lanel Messi ain't gonna play suspend because he
skipped the MLS All Star Game. Also this weekend, the
(01:04):
Big Three is in town professional three on three basketball.
We had Jordan Crawford on the show yesterday. The founder
of the league is a hip hop and entertainment icon
and he's becoming a basketball icon. Ice Cube with us
in studio. It is awesome to have you. Welcome to Cincinnati.
You guys are here for the second straight year. How
(01:26):
do you pick the cities you guys visit? Oh, you know,
we want to go to cities where you know, we
get the most love. Now that we were you know,
selling franchises, we're gonna be pretty much planned in most
of those cities. Chicago, Detroit, La, Miami, Boston, the DMV, Yeah,
(01:51):
and Dallas and so we all you know, every year
we're gonna pick a spot that's not on the that's
not on the list.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
A little off the beaten path.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
But it's great because we got a great relationship with
P and G and they've been to our sponsor for
a couple of years, and you know, it's been awesome
to be able to come during their music festival and
you know celebrate.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Yeah, it's a fun weekend downtown. The first Big Three
event I ever attended was in Lexington. Oh yeah, and
so the league has evolved, right, but you know you
had Jamar Johnson, a UC guy, Kenyan Martin, So I
had to go see those guys. Uh it's I didn't
know what to expect, and I know the league itself
has evolved.
Speaker 4 (02:35):
But it was a really fun day of basketball, very
family friendly.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
And then I went last year and the basketball is better.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
So for those who haven't been to a Big Three event,
who are listening to us right now, tell folks what
happens tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Oh man, you know, four games for the price of
one we got we got six games, I mean six
teams and that's three and two, so you know, some
gotta give.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
We got it.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Got a couple of three and two teams playing each other.
So somebody gonna be four and two, somebody gonna be
three and three. We gotta shake this up. Great matchups.
You know, got Dwight Howard. You know he's with the
LA squad. They're going against Detroit. Both teams you know,
(03:20):
are very good, and Detroit used to have Joe Johnson
he got hurt unfortunately, but uh, you know they brought
in some reinforcements that's pretty good, and just some great matchups.
You know, you gotta look at that that Chicago Boston
matchup too, because both of those teams are great.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
What I like about the the caliber play is awesome.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
You get a Hall of Famer in Dwight Howard.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
But there's a physicality that The first time I watched
the Big Three just on television, I wasn't totally expecting.
I watch Jordan Crawford and Lan Stevenson to you know,
Cincinnati versus I watched them fight a couple.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Of weeks ago. Yeah, they got into it.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
I do not encourage fighting, you know, we do allow
trash talking, but we don't want them to fight, right,
They don't really want to fight.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
They want to wrestle a little bit.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Uh Yeah, Jordan Crawford stuck his finger in Lance's nose.
I think that's a fight in any league, that even
league that goes back fifteen years. Jordan Crawford was with
us yesterday. Yes, so those two Lan Stevenson at you
see Jordan Crawford Xavier every year Skyline Chili Crosstown shootout.
Those two guys got in each other's faces. Then that's
(04:35):
fifteen years ago. So when I saw that, it warmed
my heart to a degree to see those two guys
still in each other's faces. Hey, these are two competitors,
you know. They some guys play for the glitz, the
glamour to check and some guys play because they love
a game. And what was good about the Big Three?
Most of those guys in there, to a t loved
(04:57):
the game to the point where a lot of them guys,
you know, they'll play for free, you know what I mean,
But they just want to ball against the best, and
so it's just great to get them back into the arena,
back in front of their fans, back on TV. Yeah,
because they've honed their skills to a level that is,
(05:19):
uh is magical to watch. You know, they got every
trick of the trade man and they use it on
each other to get a bucket.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
And it's fun to watch one o'clock tomorrow. Get tickets
at Bigfree dot com slash tickets. How how do you
get Because you've had you have active players and then
you have icons like George Gervin. I'm a huge New
York Knicks fan. We had Charles Oakley on our show
last year, which I mean the thirteen year old version
of me. I'm not sure who's geeking out more over
(05:49):
having Charles Oakley last year or you.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
But how do you get people to come to the league?
Do they call you? Do you reach out? Do you recruit?
Speaker 2 (05:56):
How does it work? A little of both?
Speaker 3 (05:58):
You know, are players are coaches, They reach out to players.
We got you know, a great basketball operations staff that
reach out. You know, I'll reach out. I think I'm
one of the best recruiters in America.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Ya you know, so hey, sweet, sweet, that's good to know.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
And so, you know, it's just really about the league
speaks for itself at this point when you got people
like doctor j. You got people like Clyde Drexler, Gary Payton, uh,
George Gervin Royalty. Yeah, they've been part of this league
for nine years. Can you believe it?
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:40):
So that's the proof in the putting. They wouldn't be
around if it wasn't great. And so other players see that.
Other players see that some players been in our league
six seven years, and so they see that it's a
good thing and that you know that they're having fun
in there, reinventing their you know, kind of reinventing their brands,
(07:04):
you know, going off to do other things, commercials, podcasts,
being called to do broadcast work.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
You know.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
So the league you know, definitely ups your profile and
they can do other things off of the shine that
we give them.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Yeah, and you don't you don't get on CBS if
the product isn't good, not at all. So you know
tomorrow one o'clock, if you can't be there downtown, your
games are on CBS.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yes, deal with Vice as well.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
But you talk about like putting a league over getting
on our broadcast network like that and staying on there.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
It has to be huge, man.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
That's one of the biggest you know grabs in the
league with CBS. You know, they loved us since we
were on Fox. We started off on Fox the first
two years FS one. Then we went to UH to
Big Fox for a few games, and CBS wanted us.
They was going through some some some turnover and so
(08:04):
after our Fox deal was over, we was able to
go on over to CBS and Nate.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
You know, they got the best crew.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
We get the guys who do the Super Bowl to
shoot the Big Three, because it's either you want to
shoot Big Three, you want to shoot golf. Most of
them doesn't have their fair share of golf, so they
want to come and work on some basketball. So we
get the best of the best over there at CBS,
and we're you know, proud and happy to be there.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
You uh, you go from from town to town for
the Big Three. I can't imagine how you performed this
morning in Fountain Square.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
You're still It was a prompt.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Too, Yeah, I was. I was doing a radio interview.
They start playing a good Day. I had a mic
in my hand. What I'm supposed to do, you know,
but jump up and perform? Man Cincinnati Music Fest. Could
I see you? I'm going tomorrow night. Could I see
you tomorrow night? Uh?
Speaker 2 (08:57):
You will.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
You will not see me to mom now you will
see me tomorrow in the daytime if you come to
the Big Big Three?
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Yes, all right, very but I mean you're incredibly busy,
very busy. Yeah, yeah, I mean, how do you divide
your time between everything you're involved in?
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Well, you know, it's not just me. I got a
great team of people who, you know, we coordinate and execute.
You know, we coordinate and execute. That's how that's our thing.
And they're great, you know, as good as I am.
They're just as good behind the scenes. Are you you
still play? I mean no, I retire, man. You just
(09:35):
see my retirement. I was at the podium. You just
see me on ESPN at the podium retiring as I
never scored another triple double game.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
If you came over my house, I gotta hoop my driveway, Like,
could you would beat me?
Speaker 4 (09:51):
I'm sure, but you'll you still play like at all?
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Totally? I mean, I shoot, but I don't. I don't.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
I'm not going to play. Anybody said like, try to
beat them or they them try to beat me. I'm done.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
You know why.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
I've seen a lot of my friends tear you know, Achilles,
Achilles and acls, And I'm like, man, I'm not gonna
be an amateur with a pro injury. You know you
ain't gonna see ice Cube on crutches saying cue what happened?
I was playing basketball. Everybody gonna look at me like
(10:27):
I'm crazy. But then you at least have a story,
like I got a lot of stories, man, you know
I got it. I'll tell some NWA stories to keep
the party going. I don't need to, you know, pop
my Achilles but like if I pop my achilles, it's
like going down the steps. Like if you hurt yourself
playing sports, it's better than like how a guy like
me would hurt himself. Hey man, hey, look, I don't
(10:48):
think it's no it's no honor in it at all,
you know. But yeah, you could tweak a back muscle, pulling,
pulling up some socks.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Nowadays, and I have done that. How obviously here this weekend.
Big Three came to Cincinnati last year. Is our city
one that you have spent a lot of time.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
In, not a whole lot.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
I remember getting chased out of the city when we
was with n w A. You know, they first they
tried to prevent us from coming. I had to meet
with the mayor. Luckily he was an ex Bengal middle
linebacker Williams.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
Yeah, city council, Yeah yeah, so so he was cool.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
He let us perform.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
And then after the show they they wanted us, They
wanted us bad. And uh. I remember running out the
arena like I'm outside. Everybody's outside and some girls were
driving by. They couldn't believe I was outside of the
concert by myself, right, nobody else with you, nobody with me?
(11:55):
I just ran out the side because they was looking
for us. So I'm dolo out there and they they said, uh,
exc what you doing? We saw you on stage And
I'm like, well they chasing me and uh they they
put me in their car and they drove me over
the bridge to Kentucky. Why, I'm like, they're not chasing me,
(12:18):
Like it's not high speed pursuit. You know, they was
just looking for me. They ended up dropping me off
at the hotel. All the other guys got tickets or
citations for obscenity laws and except me.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
And they were so mad at me because I got away.
Where was you? Where was you?
Speaker 3 (12:36):
We was looking for you.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
You're smart, I'm laughing.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Yeah, like, man, I'm not going I'm not coming back
to the Ohio court.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Yeah. You know, you guys can get on the plane
you were in the.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Yeah. You hear a lot from like people like my age.
So like I was thirteen and I had to ask
my mom's friend Joanne to go to Sam Goodie to
buy your America's Most Wanted cassette.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Right because they wuldn't salt the kids.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
You hear from a lot of people like that now, right, Yeah,
no doubt you know, we're the first group that they
put the Parental Advisory sticker on. And I remember, I
remember when they were stickers. I remember our records were
printed and Bryan Turner came to us and said, we
gotta put a sticker on or the pm r C
(13:22):
is gonna Parents Music Resource Committee whatever it is gonna,
it's gonna, you know, try to get this record shut
down in Congress and take it to that point. And
we was like, man, he and the guy designed the sticker,
like the guy from his office designed the sticker and
(13:43):
put it on there. And he was so mad that
he had to pay for all those stickers the next record.
He said, we're gonna bake this into the cover, man,
because I don't want to buy all these stickers. Used
to be able to peel it off. You used to
be able to pill it off.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
Yep. So yeah, that's the story of that.
Speaker 1 (14:01):

Speaker 2 (14:28):

Speaker 3 (14:29):

we hope to really expand the relationship we got, you know,
from Swiftford to Bevil, you know, so we're doing some
good things with them. The Nancy Leveman Courts, she does
