(00:00):
Kane Broom is with us. KaneBroom is one of the assistants for Nasty
Natty, which is the UC centricentry in the Basketball Tournament, which is
in it's eleventh year. Nasty Nattyis going to take on Team About Billions
tomorrow night, eight o'clock at FifthThird Arena you see hosting this year.
By the way, the Xavier crewzip them up. They will play tomorrow
(00:22):
night at six o'clock against Takeover BCCaine. Broom is currently a high school
basketball coach in Connecticut. Spent threeseasons at the University of Cincinnati, hadn't
sit out a year because of transferrules, which back then were stupid,
and then was a part of twovery good teams, including a squad in
twenty eighteen that was a second seedin the NCAA Tournament. Kine is with
(00:42):
us. Now, I have alot to ask you about. It's good
to have you. First of all, let's start with what you're doing now
with Nasty Natty. How did youbecome involved? So originally I started off
the first year I actually played ina TVT. I played with Saint Bonavicer's
and I just like the build upof culture that they those guys had over
(01:03):
there, that karaderie and the brotherhoodthat it kind of led to. So
after that, me and Kevin startedtalking because me and Hi are very close,
and you started talking about maybe bringingthat back to Cincinnati. And then
that following year we just jumped startedit and kind of just gravitate to the
guys who were closest to and fromevery from that point on, each year
has gotten better for us, andnow we were able to bring the fifth
(01:26):
or the third year. Yeah, how cool was it? You know,
obviously you played at Centas last yearand up at ud Arena. How cool
is it to have it in yourown building. I mean, it feels
wonderful. I think it's a greatopportunity for guys to, you know,
experience that fan base that we have, I think is one of the best
in the country. I think wehad a lot of fans come to Santa's
(01:46):
last year and support, so we'rejust hoping for the same and you know,
it's just it's just fortunate to beable to do that in the third
year. And I want to givea lot of credit to Kevin because it
was a lot of things that hepushed for behind the closed doors, along
with West and a lot of peoplethat you see to help us make this
move. So there's a lot ofexcitement behind it, and we hope,
you know, this sitement doesn't blurthe vision in these games and that million
(02:08):
dollars. All right, let's let'stalk about the team, and let's let's
talk about the preparation. Uh whathave the last couple of weeks been like
and how ready do you feel toget underway? Well, fortunately, I
think a lot of our guys, you know, even even up till now,
a few of our guys maybe theymiss the first game because we have
two guys that's in the Summer Leagueright now. We have a guy finishing
(02:30):
up overseas today tonight is actually hislast game, so he actually will be
flying in tomorrow morning. You know, Troy finished up two weeks ago,
so guys are pretty much in shapeand and you know, ready to go
for him. Just the last fewdays you've been kind of just getting guys
together. You know, guys addto their games each and every year,
so we just try to get uphere a week before and get guys played
(02:53):
with each other, get from eachother again, and just try to keep
the same principles and move forward withwho we built from last year. You're
working with players in some respects thatyou have played with. What is it
like coaching against contemporaries or coaching coachingcontemporaries. I think I think you know,
obviously the teams that we had inthe prior teams and just the guys
(03:13):
that we have involved, I hadpretty good careers, and I think it's
the respect you know almost all ofus, so you know, the coaching
comes from the players itself too,So I don't think it's anything different.
I think it actually helps us,you know as coaches with me catching me
or Kevin and Kevin and all thoseguys, George as well and Deontae.
I think it helps us, youknow, for when we go back and
coach our kids throughout the season. You have made a very quick transition from
(03:38):
someone whose college career ended just overfive years ago to now the head coach
at Saint Thomas Moore Prep and inConnecticut. Uh, walk me through that
transition when you went from player toassistant coach to now head coach? Is
this something you knew you always wantedto do? No, I actually didn't
you know. COVID kind of madethings, you know, come to a
(04:00):
halt for a little bit. Andthen in between that time, I played
for a guy named Jerry Quinn who'sa legendary high school coach, and he
gave me a call throughout that timeand just kind of expressed that he thought
that that would be a great careerfor me and that you know, jumping
in at the time would be beneficialfor me. And then you know,
I called a few other guys Iremember, you know, me and Mick
talked and he kind of mentioned thesame thing throughout my career, just you
(04:20):
know, and that I'll be agood coach. So all those things kind
of came back and I kind ofseen for myself for a future end,
and so I just wanted to jumpstart that and not you know, kind
of let things linger until after himbe be undecided. Uh you mentioned Mick.
Now, I've been to some Mickcronin practices. In the practices getting
ready for the TBT, who playshis role, who's the yeller and screamer.
(04:45):
We really don't got one of those. I mean, cash Cash definitely
gets on guys. But like Isaid, it's a lot of respect amongst
all those guys, and we obviouslyplayed for mix, so we all got
tough. So you know, wegive it to each other, we take
it, and you know we justwe built from it, try to succeeed
from it. So it's never nohard love. We know we all love
(05:06):
each other and we want to dothe best, so we get on each
other. Do you have aspirations tocoach in college one day? Yes?
Yes, yes, and and Iflirted with it. I flirt with it
every year. I just want tobe ready. I think for me personally,
it's a lot of things that transpiresinto me making that jump. And
I love what I'm at right now. I love helping the high school guys.
(05:26):
I get to live with him,I get to be with them and
help them kind of see their dreamsout. And I think that's been more
beneficial to me than actually probably jumpinginto the high school ranks right now,
I mean college ranks right now.Kane Broom is with his former Bearcat part
of Uh Nasty Natty TVT this weekendat Fifth Third Arena. One of those
players is set to be a Bearcatthis fall, Tyler Betsy, who you
(05:48):
coached in high school. Uh.Based on what we've read, there are
lots of reasons to be excited abouthim. Give us a scouting report.
I think he's he's a guy.That's first, he's a team guy.
He's a great, a great kid. I personally, I told us today,
I think he's the best shoot I'veseen live with my own eyes,
(06:10):
and he's a shot maker, andhe's just a gamer. His IQ is
just there. He's been around tremendoustalent growing up his whole life and got
worked out by a lot of great, great guys. So I think,
you know, he's gonna have hisfreshman bumps, but I think you see
has got a really great freshman andthroughout his career here that they'll be able
to see that he's not an ordinaryplayer. How cool was it to have
(06:31):
a guy that you've coached go playJarama Mater? It was cool, you
know, actually, because you know, I met Tyler my last year at
Cincinnati and my but our parents kneweach other growing up and and whatnot.
So his mom actually run him toa game and we played you kind at
home and he ended up coming thesame time. It's more when I worked
(06:54):
there and just to see his histransition through the two years, I actually
joked when we first got on campusand I was like, yeah, you
want to go to Cincinnati. Helike lath and stuff like that, and
then you know, ended up beingthe senior year picking Cincinnati. I was
able to you know, come uphere with him on his visit and just
see the whole thing. It wasgreat. You know, I just tried.
I tried to take it as likean alumni and you know, let
(07:15):
him decide, and it was just, you know, a great friend to
see that he wanted to go somewherewith that, you know, I also
want awesome. So the pipeline's open. So if you have any more like
him, you know where to sendhim. Right. Oh yeah, you
know my first day. You arepart of this program for three years,
and it feels like a different dayand age because you were still you know,
playing during the time where if youtransferred, yeah you had to city
(07:36):
year and so you had to cityyear and then you know when you can
play that team in twenty seventeen.Twenty eighteen is one of my favorite of
all time. Gary Clark, JacobEvans, Jared Cumberland. Just a terrific
team. And look, you werea part of three really good teams but
that team that particular year was special. Give me some memories that stand out
(08:00):
when you think about that particular season. I just remember that that team that
was probably the closest, you know, I think, I mean, obviously
a lot of those guys overlap years, but I think, you know,
as far as a unit, Ithink that year was was probably the best
year we had. I would saymy best memory was probably the losses,
(08:20):
honestly because it wasn't that many.It was like that when we kind of
really really came together and we gottayeah that by Nick, Remember we lost
we lost two in a row twice, Yeah, because then he lost five
games. Yeah, So those arebight of the most memories, the two
losses in a row that we couldpractice that well. It was weird here
because you know, you played aNKU but you know, you talk about
(08:43):
the losses. NK or Wichita Statebeats you. But then you go there
and win the last game of theregular season, which was awesome, and
then you know, you win theconference tournament. Rob Gray throws the pass
at a bounce. So like,my memories are as good as yours.
Yeah, yeah, No, Imean for every game that year, I
just It's just what stuck out mostwas the losses because you know, we
(09:05):
had to go in to practice cluff, so those ones we obvio up for.
But you know, I think thatyear was the best, the best
of my three for sure, thattheam was a great team. Give us
an idea, and you mentioned youknow, you talk to west and and
and getting Tyler Betsy to come toCincinnati. You know, obviously you have
a relationship with him. Give usyour take on the current state of UC
(09:26):
basketball. I love it. Ilove it. The guys, the guys
around me, the older guys beforeme, they they all talk about it.
I think it's in great hands.Just to kind of even see the
last three years transpired. I thinkeach year, you know, Wester and
his staff made a statement on buildingculture and you know, even even from
(09:48):
a winter standpoint, so I thinkyou know, from from the from the
tests that we got, I thinkis only going to keep betting better and
this year be able to you know, correct that top twenty five, get
in the tournament, and keep buildingthis thing to where you to get it
well and hopefully you can wet ourappetite with a great show in this weekend
and then keep advancing a million bucksat stake the TBT this weekend at Fifth
(10:09):
Third Arenakane, best of luck toyou with the guys. Been awesome getting
a chance to have you on,and congratulations on the success in your coaching
career so far. Hopefully it continues. Man, thanks so much. No,
I thank you so much, andI appreciate you having me on.
And I just want to say,you know, if anybody can get out
Friday at a PM, we wouldlove to support. We do it for
you guys, and we just lovethe Cincinnati atmosphere and culture around the whole
(10:31):
city. So if you can getout, we'll really really really really appreciate
that. Yeah, Caane broome awesomecareer and it continues, and if you
could send more players to U seethat would be awesome. By the way,
