Speaker 2 (00:09):
I have a Goose training camera, Tony and to Move
Football Show is there, bringing you the Orange and Blank
like never before, Tomorrow at ten am on ESPN fifteen thirty,
the official home of US Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
All right, we're stoked for that? What's up by that?
Speaker 4 (00:25):
For three?
Speaker 3 (00:26):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty Moeger, thank you for listening.
Hopefully you're having an awesome Tuesday. Paul Dayner Junior is
here from The Athletic and The Growler podcast and obviously
was not listening yesterday. He was busy at Mock Turtle
Soup when I spent two minutes talking about how awesome
the crossover episode was Zach Taylor Power Stack Podcast, The
(00:48):
Growler Zach talking about the Reds. I had a sense
Zach talking about the Reds was a respite from him
having to answer weeks were the questions about Trey Hendrickson
and Shamar Stewart coming up? Has ever signed up to
do a podcast with me? Quicker?
Speaker 5 (01:03):
When I was like, here's the concept you don't talk
about the Bengals for one interview, He's like, when can
I do it? Line it up? And it was phenomenal.
I'm sure he was extra happy to do it, and
I enjoyed it. I believe in giving the people what
they want. I saw this, and so you and I
are here for an hour.
Speaker 6 (01:20):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
We would be remiss if we spent the entire hour
and didn't talk about Trey Hendrickson, who did not report
to Bengals training camp today and Shamar Stewart who hasn't
reported yet either. So we're gonna talk about that. But
I left it up to the audience. I left it
up to people on Twitter, what do you want us
to start with? And the idea is, if you want
us to start with Shamar Stewart and Trey Hendrickson, fine,
(01:41):
we'll do it. And if you want us to wait
and start with like everybody else and all the other
storylines and there's a bunch, we'll do that too. And
then we'll tell you if if we start with all
the other stuff in about a half hour, we're gonna
have to do Trey and Schamar, and that's your chance
to you know, go away for a while and then
hopefully at some point come back. I saw the.
Speaker 5 (02:02):
Poll that you posted, and I was quick to vote
and then see if I could create more social media
addresses to continue to vote.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
In what direction I was I would I'm fine with
where we end up. The number fifty nine point one
percent say start the show, do the first two segments
on everything else.
Speaker 6 (02:23):
Wow?
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, I thought everything else would win. I didn't think
it would be quite that decisive. People are so over it.
So but aren't they? And how could you not be?
But we're not going to talk about it. We're not. Now.
That's about thirty minutes save that.
Speaker 5 (02:39):
This is like the day last week or I think
about a week more than one week go now where
I tried to turn my podcast into a Shamar Stewart
free zone and.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
It lasted one day.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
I really tried, like it was an earnest attempt, like
I think I'm gonna do this, and then I just
you can't, You just you just can't. But I tried
and and failed. But I'm ready for what we're ever
doing right now. So let's preview training camp, which may
do it. Let's talk about the players who are there.
How many jobs starting tomorrow are legitimately up for grabs,
(03:11):
starting gigs. Starting gigs are just roster spots. I mean,
not a ton. I think the back of the roster.
We get too into the back of the roster. Probably
there's some spots there.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
But and by the way, we're going to today with
the battle for the third quarterback.
Speaker 5 (03:29):
Spot, well of course coming up in a bit, of course,
have you got a jersey yet?
Speaker 3 (03:34):
That's one of my questions for you.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
Okay, sorry, sorry, I didn't even take that off your list. No,
I think I think there's some. There's always some. I
think there's opportunity. But you don't you know, you have
a small number of draft picks. You have a lot
of turnover, you know. I remember writing last year about
how many rookies and undrafted rookies that they had taking snaps,
(03:59):
meaningful snaps, and how many of them cause losses, right
like that was a big part of the really an
undercurrent of last year's failures, with so many of those
big moments where Ryan Rico trying to get a hold
down Dejon Anthony and Kansas City. Like some of these
late picks, undrafted guys that had mistakes, you have them
(04:19):
in their second year. So it's more about because you
have a small draft class. To me, it's more about
a lot of the leap guys, the year two leap
potential guys than it is necessarily about this year's rookie class.
I have a pretty good feel for where this year's
rookie class plots, those that show up and what that's
(04:42):
gonna look like. But I think the bigger question is
when you get into some of the people that started
making an impact from the back half of last year's
draft class, can't Will they fall off and be forgotten? Okay,
you had your chance, or is there that progu and
where does that come from? And that can go a
(05:02):
long way to defining I think some of the back
of this roster in terms of what it looks like,
the starting gut jobs. I mean, Jay and I did
this on the podcast today. There's not a ton of
stuff up for grabs. I mean that both guard spots
we know, but I mean they have cleared the deck
for Dylan Fairchild. They're gonna give him every opportunity. It's
(05:22):
whether he can do it or not. They like what
they've seen from him, but he's never put professional pads
on before, and so we'll see what that looks like
Cordell Wilson is there to push him at the other
guard spot or at that guard spot, and then they're
leaving the other side to the two vets to kind
of duke it out between Cody Ford and Lucas Patrick
and then the others. If they can prove something could
maybe enter the mix. But for the most part, they've
(05:45):
kind of siloed those two off and to simplify those
battles a little bit. Outside of that, I mean, you've
got a bunch of guys that are gonna try it
again the same thing. These second year guys, they're going
to try to ascend at different spots, but it feels
like they really have a pretty you have a pretty
good feel of the.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
To the too deep at this point. Are you doing
a roster projection here?
Speaker 7 (06:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:09):
At the outset of camp. Yes, it's running tomorrow morning.
I'm mostly done with it. Can we spoil running back?
Are they going to carry for Yeah? I think so. Yeah. Well,
the variable.
Speaker 5 (06:21):
There is to me is Zach Moss in terms of
how healthy he looks, how healthy he plays. Did his
injury affect anything about his game? We don't really know that.
You come back from a next thing and there's a
lot of confidence in that, but you don't know until
you get out there and do it and what like,
(06:44):
what is his role even if he is Yeah, I
feel like we know Samaj.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
That's what I've been trying to wrap my brain around.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
Like, I just think he's just there in case, which
is good, Like you need that and Taj Brooks being
more of the upside development.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
Will see what he looks like in all these preseason games.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
Guy, if he's really great, maybe there is a potential
for them to only carry three and do something extra elsewhere.
I just think I like. I think they like under
the assumption that Zach Moss is healthy and looks similar
to the player that he was last year. He's a
nice rotational running back to have in your mix. And
(07:23):
they like the setup of that room with four and
it makes sense with their roster.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Construction right now. You were asking folks on the Growler
Podcast's social media feed, you know last week, things that
are interesting about Camp that have nothing to do with contracts.
And I didn't see what everybody responded, but I saw
there were folks who chimed in with wide receiver three
understanding Gasiki is the third wide receiver. Is that battle
(07:53):
underneath him as interesting or as wide open as many
seem to.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
Think it is not interesting? Yeah, I don't think I don't.
I think it's that we've we've you know, sort of
plotted this out. They have a top four and I
think there is a significant tier drop after that. You
have Gisiki and Yobash behind uh, you know, Chase in
(08:17):
Higgins and that's your four pass catchers. And then and
then it's hey, what do you guys got? Can can
you be something? We heard again?
Speaker 3 (08:28):
Show Award?
Speaker 5 (08:29):
Moegar Show Award? There are so many candidates for the
Moeger Show Award this year, and you're gonna be there, yes,
to take in everyone. Seven guys that are basically undrafted rookies.
I mean they're all Moeger Show. Can we handicap it?
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Okay?
Speaker 5 (08:46):
At the break, I'm going to handicap the Moeger Show Award.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
Okay. Those who don't know, it's the wide receiver that
kind of emerges from nowhere, becomes a little bit of
a favorite generate some buzz light. We start talking I
tweets some highlights and then we started talking about like,
you know what this guy here tell you what jamar
Che should be looking over his shoulder, you know that
kind of thing. That's how silly it gets.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
Yes, but I think that those four again yesterday though
we get another look. I'm hopeful on Jermaine Burton from
Dan Pitchers, and I appreciate that, of course, but he's
sort of laying down that you have to do this
every couple of weeks. You have to do these mile
posts where you just say, okay, still doing the right things.
(09:30):
Still showed up and it was funny, you know. Pitch
was talking about it and said exactly that, like, you know,
he has to be where he's supposed to be when
it's time to be there.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
He was thinking.
Speaker 5 (09:42):
He was talking along the lines of on the field,
and we all started chuckling, and he was like, I know,
you laugh, but like, yes, obviously he has to show
up and all of that, obviously, but that's also on
the field, and he's right now. I feel like he
has come in and mentally picked up what he needs
to be picking up. Is in the right place, is
(10:03):
doing all of those things, and that's a big deal
considering where we were last year. The other part that
he added on to it was like here's the thing, though,
he's gonna get a ton of reps this preseason. He's
gonna play, I mean, he is gonna play a lot.
They're gonna put him to the test, good as you should. Good,
go out there, prove you can run the right route
(10:24):
and be in the right place and do the right
thing for three games and some practices and do all
that right and that, you know, it opens the door.
They're laying out the red carpet for a path to
being a part of this team. And that's something considering
where we were at. And so we'll see if he
can do it. But they're you know, another sort of
(10:46):
you know, stamp of approve on where he's currently at
right now.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
You mentioned year two guys, and I think of Chris
Jenkins and McKinley Jackson, and I think and again, I'm
looking at what some of the answers were to your
question last week, Thursday or Friday whenever that was. I
agree with those who think it's gonna be interesting just
to hear and see and follow what the rotation looks
like on the defensive line. Who can do what a
(11:10):
defensive tackle and what that unit's gonna look like. Understanding
that on the edge. There's no Chamar and Trey who
I'm not supposed to mention the segment. Yeah, I'm not
supposed to mention them yet.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
You know, the the year two of Chris Jenkins is
such a massive variable here because you know, they just
don't they don't have it. They don't have somebody who
you really you know, bj Hill, we know what he is, okay,
and that's fine, and I like the Slaton ad like
it's fine. I like those those those pieces. But they
(11:41):
need another guy and we just don't know if Chris
Jenkins is gonna be another guy.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
I just wee.
Speaker 5 (11:48):
There's there's hope, there's belief, and you know it would
you know, follow a standard career arc if he became
a guy this year, a second round pick. You know,
you don't have to be great a rookie. You can
you can take a step in year or two at
that position. It happens, right like, It's not like that's
something that would be. But there's plenty of, you know,
(12:09):
examples of a guy who doesn't quite do much as.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
A rookie and then it just kind of fades away.
And that's what it is.
Speaker 5 (12:17):
They can't afford that because they didn't really bring in
anything to as an insurance policy despite the Haven Brian
and McTelvin agent stuff that was for the back of
the roster, you know, and maybe maybe it happens, but
they they really it changes the entire dynamic of this defense.
If they can get him to play up to the
(12:37):
pedigree and the guy they thought they were getting.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
Well, I just think of last year's class. We're all
high on a Marius Mems. Jermaine Burton has to play
himself out of the doghouse, Eric All Unfortunately, I hope
that kid plays football again. The odds don't seem like
they're in his favor. There are two players that I
feel like, how we look at that class is going
to hinge on and they both played the same position.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
Yeah, one of those guys to work out. You need
one of those guys to work out. Yeah, And and
we'll see if it does. And that's you know, there's
a there's it's a fine line between faith in your
picks and reckless and I feel like Duke Tobin is
riding it there, you know, Like there's we've talked about
the big bet on Al gold in a lot. It's
(13:20):
it just continues to come back over and over again.
When we now get into this camp like this is
this is where you're gonna learn how your BET's looking.
You know, are you're gonna hit the cash out button?
Do you need to rebuy? Because if you get into
midway through camp and the nine top one hundred picks
that they have that are gonna be a huge part
(13:43):
of this defense, all are kind of yeah, looking like
they're middling again, or you're seeing issues or or injury.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
Stuff props up again.
Speaker 5 (13:51):
With some of these guys, you start to say, man,
this was why you didn't want to make this bet.
Speaker 8 (13:56):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
They believe in those guys and and you know, we'll
see how it goes, but we're going to start learning
real quick about the status.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
Of that bet. I need you when we come back
to look ahead to one year from now, plus, we
have to talk about he's still here. Okay, let's assume
we're still here. Yes, one year from now, suite, we're
still here. Do you know something I don't.
Speaker 6 (14:20):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
It's always a chance, Okay, I guess, so you never know. Man,
I want you to. I want you to flash forward,
fast forward ahead a year and I well, I'll make
that make sense coming up after the break, and we
have to talk about the battle for the third quarterback spot,
which I think should already be decided. And then at
three thirty five Schamar and Treye on ESPN fifteen thirty

Four After three ESPN fifteen thirty. Paul Tanner Junior from
the Athletic and the Growler podcast is here till four.
Tony Remo Training Camp Show Tomorrow morning ten am, broadcasting
from Bengals training camp with the normal noon to six
schedule on this radio station completely and totally unchanged.
Speaker 10 (15:40):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
I assume we're going to ask you to join us
for some of that. I don't know how or when
or what that shit.
Speaker 5 (15:46):
Should Does that mean I should save my moegerwarding handicapping?
I just I just used your pen and paper and
everything to line up my odds.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Yeah for it this year. So you've handicapped the race
to win the Moeger Award, Yes, the Mugger Show Award.
You know what the thing is just yours is mind.
Nobody else cares at all. All right, this is for
the wide receiver who emerges from the shadows to become
the talk of camp. Can shut this for me? All right,
I'm going there's quickly. Not to interrupt you. Let's talk
(16:15):
about who's not eligible the top I'm putting none of
the top five. So Chase Higgins is not going to
be part of this.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
Yoshah, Burton and Jones are not part of this. I
don't think we can people that have already been there,
We've seen them like that. So you there are a
ton of these young guys and this is it could
be anyone.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
But I see a I see a tear here.
Speaker 5 (16:39):
Okay, okay, I'm gonna go Isaiah Williams at plus two hundred. Right,
a little got a little run last year, got some love,
made an impression. I think he's gonna get some opportunity,
might even catch some balls from Joe Burrow.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
Get him talking a little bit.
Speaker 5 (16:54):
Then you if you get people start talking about that city,
are they gonna keep a sixth or seventh through?
Speaker 3 (17:00):
That's how you win that award.
Speaker 5 (17:02):
Right, So I'm gonna put him at the top because
I think he has the best chance of actually sneaking in.
Speaker 3 (17:07):
Okay, Now I think highlights though.
Speaker 5 (17:10):
Jordan Moore, Okay, okay, kid from Duke, I think there's
a I think he has a chance to get the
viral highlight. It has the people calling in, what about
Jordan Moore who doesn't want more Duke receivers? And there
you go. Okay, Then I think it's a drop. Then
there's a lot of there's a lot of it's gonna
take something talking value here, now, value down here, Mitchell Tinsley,
(17:31):
I got a plus five hundred. Okay, I got my guy,
the guy Sudney Courtland Cole Burgess. He is my guy.
I wrote about him last year, The Pride of Sydney Courtland.
Sudney Courtland, I think is where Allen Cutler went to college.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
It's where Dan Pitcher went to college. Yeah, but Dan
Pitcher is not obnoxious, like cog is not obnoxious. Cole
Burgess is a great kid.
Speaker 5 (17:56):
He's stuck around now for a second camp, and I'm
just gonna keep staying on because I like him. Uh So,
then Rashad owns a plus eight hundred and then Kendrick
Pryor all the way back in a plus one thousand,
who he may be the best receiver on among the group.
But when you've been around and eligible for the Moegger
Award too many times, yeah, it's hard to then like
you're not gonna have like the the breakthrough in year three.
(18:19):
He was a very serious He may have even won it.
I don't know if he won it, but he was
definitely in the mix when it was like you got
to keep Kendrick por you can't expose him to waivers. Yeah, right,
but he's he's here. He might be the best receiver
of the bunch, but he's probably the least likely to
win your.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Sort of like being on the Bengals Ring of Honor ballot,
like the seventh time. Yeah, you know, it's just kind
of loses its fizzle. Yeah, a little bit for old Kendrick.
Should I get a orange, black or white Desmond Rider jersey?
Once he beats up? What's this other guy's name? Peyton Thorn?
Peyton Thorn? Yeah, yeah, once Doz just torches him and
(18:56):
throws like eight touchdown passes in the three preseason games,
and you know, generate some real buzz about you know,
you know they did they overpay for Burrow because you know,
I'm stoked. I'm excited that des Ridder has a chance
to stay in the NFL with the team that I
root for.
Speaker 5 (19:14):
I did make sure to ask specifically if there is
any shot of Desmond Ridder thrown in Jake Browning. It
took approximately one point two seconds for Dan Pitcher to say,
Jake is the backup and should be No, No, I know,
I'm just you know, just make sure we're all everyone's
on the same page here. You know, get black, It
doesn't I mean, shouldn't you get the color that coincides
(19:35):
with the UC color? If you look, you can crossover
or is that not important to you? That's I don't
own a Bengals jersey. Okay, I've owned one in my
life and I lost it. I feel like you could
have a you have a better chance of wearing a
black Bengals Desmond Ridder jersey to a UC event. Yeah,
and getting away with it rather than like orange or
(19:56):
something like that. So I don't know, I mean, am
I wrong?
Speaker 3 (19:59):
No is?
Speaker 5 (20:00):
I'm just thinking about you coordinating with the color of
the crowd, which I know is important.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
It is. I might make it a pole question. I'm
leaning white, Okay. I think white jerseys. You know, in
the wintertime, I wear blue jeans. I think white with
the blue jeans looks good. But the black jerseys are cool.
Speaker 5 (20:14):
Yeah, So how often how often you playing on sporting?
This a couple of games?
Speaker 3 (20:21):
I love it, really, I'm just gonna do it to
make people mad.
Speaker 4 (20:24):
You know.
Speaker 5 (20:25):
Really, you don't get a burrow. No, everybody else is
a burrow. I want a doz. Has Desmond approached Joe
about taking number nine? There is there amount of money
that can be exchanged.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
So I tweeted about this and and I got some pushback,
but you get pushback on Twitter for anything. But I
got some pushback and it was great. They're doing this
instead of you know, getting a corner or safety or
a guard like you you're allowed to do, You're allowed
to do more than one thing. And you know they've
had four quarterbacks in camp before. It is it's okay.
(21:01):
Like if des Ridder has to play, God love them,
they're screwed. So like, can we just have something that's
like it's kind of neat He played at UCEE. Now
he's a Bengal.
Speaker 5 (21:11):
Sure the word the phrase net positive was used about.
I think, you know, just his personality, his likabilities, leadership
stuff is good for a scout team, for the room,
you know what I mean, all of that stuff, and
he's a good story here. I just think that, you know,
you just look for something new and hope that that
(21:31):
can be something that helps the room as a whole.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
And the people who are gonna tell me I'm stupid
for getting a des Ritter jersey probably just got rid
of their aj mccaron jerseys, so you know, it might
still have them hoping he somehow Someway comes back again.
I still have a soft spot for for aj Id to.
I have one more question before we talk about the
elephants in the room. Evan McPherson stunk last year? Can
(21:59):
we see things in tree? And when I say stunk,
like he was just another kicker by his own style,
he is no saying he wasn't a weapon. Field goals
from forty beyond, he was six of twelve. Evan McPherson
was drafted and invested in because he's different, because he's
a weapon. We might not get this answer during training camp,
but I think it's like, you know, everybody has, like
(22:19):
here's the storyline nobody's talking about.
Speaker 5 (22:21):
That's one for me. Yeah, we did. We did a
draft of the most interesting players on the pot a
couple of weeks ago. Is myself and Charlie Goldsmith and
Jeremi Rout Fox nineteen and Jeremy had the first pick
and he picked Evan McPherson and we sort of laughed
about it a little bit. Yeah, because he wasn't really
on our board. But it wasn't because he's not interesting.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
Yeah, I mean that to me.
Speaker 5 (22:44):
The interesting element of this is what is the conversation
like in.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
Week seven, if his first seven weeks looked like last year,
at what point?
Speaker 5 (22:55):
At what point do they start to say we need
to win games if it cost you another game or
two and he's fifty percent from forty plus, and it
seems to be a lot of the same stuff. And
he's now had this same operation for a couple of years.
You know, I just wonder at what point they are
willing to start having those conversations, especially you know, after
(23:19):
having gone through the K York experience last year. I mean,
that's what that looks like when you start considering other things.
So that's interesting to me. But I you know, everything
that we know about it is they want to get
more consistency and trust between all three pieces, and that
that is as much a part of this equation as
(23:40):
it is anything that Evan was doing. But Evan has
to be able to be the one to develop that trust.
It's it's his confidence in the way he's hitting the
ball that matters, no matter what's happening in front of him.
Now do we do have we do have a long
snapper competition, I know, so I'm very excited about this.
I'm gone judging spin ray, It's an accuracy, and I'm
(24:03):
excited about you know, the the dumber. You're gonna be
spending a lot of time. You got a lot of
time to kill. Okay, You're gonna be like, can we
get our booth moved in front of the special teams
field so I can get a better look at cal

this is just the time on task found out he

apparently had an ankle injury and he's what shit we
didn't know about But he's fine, I guess now, at
least according to Darren Simmons yesterday. But that is the
question for me is what happens how far into the
season does it have to look like last year until
they start looking around and saying, what are the.

(27:12):
can watch them on Apple TV. Paul Danner Junior's here.
The Athletic was yesterday the most eventful mock turtlesup day ever.
I don't know about eventful.
Speaker 5 (27:22):
I would say the twenty eleven Carson Palmers stand off
Carol Soup is probably the most eventful, with the most
kind of fireworks that we've that we've had, but this
was one of the spiciest. Okay, Duke Tobin was just
suffering no fools yesterday. He just he had a message
(27:43):
to get across and he sent it, and he sent
it was no, no, he didn't want any You know,
they have essentially sat on their side of the story
throughout this whole thing. They've they've never themselves gone public,
They've never gone out there, and meanwhile just get crushed
because you know, so much of the other side has,
(28:06):
whether it's Shamar and the locker room or his agent,
has gone on and talked to a lot of people,
and it ends up in all those NFL media circles
have had plenty of opportunity to put their side out.
So he wanted to be very clear obviously about their
feelings about what is actually happening.
Speaker 3 (28:24):
Here, and.
Speaker 5 (28:26):
The message was we have zero problem with Shamar. We
have every problem with his representation, and that is how
we feel about it, which is an understandable take in
regards to how do we salvage this. We got to
make sure Schamar knows we have love for him and
believe in him, while also directing what's happening here we
(28:48):
feel is idiotic. And so they take aim at the
agent and you can be on whatever side you want
to with that. That was their message. It was abundantly clear.
They wanted that to be their message, and they repeated
it at every pod they went through, and when the TV,
and with the writers and with everywhere they went. That
was it, and I think it was delivered loud and clear.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
How does this get resolved without either Schamar telling his
agent let's cave I'm going to sign, or him changing
agents entirely. I think those are the only two ways.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
I think it inevitably lands at Shamar Stewart's feet. I mean,
the agent works for him, and if he wants to
play football in Cincinnati, if that matters to him, you know,
I think it's pretty clear right now that the two sides,
the alleged adults in the room here above him, the
(29:47):
two sides responsible for him playing are not going to
agree and appear very far apart on this inane language
that is probably not gonna even matter. So if that
you have to decide at a certain point, you have
to you have to grow up and say what do
I want to do to start my career? Do I
(30:09):
want to go full blow it up? Do I want
to go full nuclear here? Or do I want to
play football? Does playing football matter to me? And he's
going to have to make that decision. It doesn't seem
like either side that is involved with him is going
to figure out and you know, a middle ground here,
and so I don't see I don't see many other
(30:31):
options other than Shamar standing up and saying all right enough, I.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Want to play. Is there a valid criticism that the
Bengals should have done a better job knowing which agent
they would be working with.
Speaker 5 (30:47):
I think they should have done a better job vetting
Schamar as a whole. I mean, no top thirty. You know,
we've that's been That's not really ever been the case
with them. I think a lot of you know, I
talked to Mike Elcho a couple of days ago at
you know, it's like that's not the depth that you're
used to here with a PIX when you can usually
(31:08):
narrow down pretty well. You think you're gonna get the
agent's a part of that, but honestly, not in anyone's
wildest dreams. Do you think that a first round slotted
contract is really gonna be a problem for anybody with
any agent.
Speaker 3 (31:24):
I think they.
Speaker 5 (31:25):
Bring David willlegeta back. This isn't a problem. Yeah, right,
Like it's just line it up, knock it down. That's
the way. It's always been a worst case scenario. You're,
you know, talking about this a week in the camp,
like for it to feel and look like this over this,
no matter who it is, you never could have anticipated
(31:48):
it to be this silly.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
I guess, to quote what Mike Brown said yesterday. Then
there's Trey Hendrickson who put on Instagram this morning a
picture of him driving in Florida. Yeah, which was interesting.
I guess can we talk more about what you then
put on the way so he For those who are
not on Twitter, the or Instagram, I guess the picture
(32:12):
that he took the way the trees set up on
the highway that he was on it looked like a
It looked like the state of Ohio. And I noticed that,
and I decided to make a little map, and I
put little dots where Cincinnati, dayon, Columbus, Cleveland, and Toledo
art no knock on Finley or Zanesville or Portsmouth or Hillsboro.
(32:33):
I just I went with those five cities, hoping everybody
would just get a chuckle out of it because it
looks like the state of Ohio.
Speaker 5 (32:41):
Was that really his subconscious message that I'm in Florida
but I'm.
Speaker 3 (32:44):
Driving could have been Ohio, could have been Now I
need to point this out that ten minutes before my
little Joe Kelly Rippin at Channel five tweeted out something similar.
Oh so you look like you totally stole it. She
she has like an important job doing the news in
the morning. She's a real journalist. I am just a
guy sitting at his keyboard at my house. So I
had a little bit more time to draw up a map.
(33:07):
She probably would have been able to do that had
she not been, you know, reporting the news. Yeah, so
she did say to me, She's like, I beat you
to that joke, and not what she said, but like
I had ten minutes before we both think, I'm like, fine, whatever,
but I thought it was funny, nice to think about
the Trey Hendrickson thing. And it's it's frustrating, but it's also,
I guess amusing. We knew this was gonna be the
(33:28):
outcome in December. We knew this was gonna be the
training camp Eve outcome before last season even ended. Mm hm.
Speaker 5 (33:36):
And and we know what it's probably gonna look like.
We've been calling what this is gonna look like for months. Yes,
it's gonna be. You know, I had to. I had
to take the time to specifically remind everyone today, like,
let's go through the last five years here, Okay, this
is what it's been. We go through Joe Mixing in
twenty twenty up until September, we had two years of
(33:58):
Jesse Bates drama. One where he was like on the
team live stream in the press conference taking shots. In
the next year, he's he didn't show up on the
tag when he's gonna sign the tag, he's in the suite.
Right that distraction, we get into the Burrow years, right
the Borough year where he signs at the Thursday kickoff game.
Last year with Jamar and t and spliced in between
(34:20):
that were other smaller things this year Hendrickson and Stewart
like this is I mean, Mike Brown said it yesterday
talking about it's like this is just kind of the
way the system is.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
Well, it is here here, this is the system.
Speaker 5 (34:34):
One of these things always exists, and I don't, like,
I have some doubts and I push back a little
bit on the idea that this is connected directly to
their slow starts in some cases, yeah, like not totally though,
Like I I give you know.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
Joe Burrow's been dealing with stuff and that's why they
like that start.
Speaker 5 (34:55):
Joe Burrows slow starts, and in the history of of
what's going on there leading into season, to me, is
like ninety percent of this distract Last year, I think
you could say the New England game and that Tea
injury and jam are not having practiced, and obviously along
with burrows wrist played into one thing. But like, there's
not a ton of examples where I feel like that's
(35:17):
just in fact, of all those players I just mentioned,
most of them had really good seasons and so it's
it's not always the case. It can be, and we
saw last year was the most impactful because of the
kind of just disjointed nature of the entire operation.
Speaker 3 (35:35):
But I don't.
Speaker 5 (35:37):
Necessarily think, and especially here, this is the Trey Hendrickson experience.
This is Trey has always had problems with his contract
this time of year. Well, I mean, and I don't
mean that in life flippantly like it's just true. He
has Trey Henderson gets sacks and is mad about his contract.
That's what his that's what he is, and that's where
(35:59):
they're at with it again. And so I don't think
that that, you know, distracts people. I think if the
Bengals show up, regardless of what happens to Shamar Suit
and Trey Hendrickson, the Bengals show up with a fully
healthy and engaged Big three in Cleveland, they're winning that game.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
Burrow, Chase and Ritter.
Speaker 5 (36:20):
That's right, I was, Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking.
Just let ridder eat, just let Ridterer eat. Sure, I
agree wholeheartedly. Yeah, here's what I want to know a
year from now. Which player are we talking about holding out?
Who's the guy Chase Brown? Yeah, it feels like the
most likely O. That's probably strong.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
Okay, who is the player that we spend all off
season discussing their contract status.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
Chase Brown, I think you know I've told everybody Chase.
I think Chase Brown's kind of a monster year.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
He'll be up.
Speaker 5 (36:49):
Kyen Williams is going through this right now with the
Rams like he's gonna rapport.
Speaker 3 (36:53):
He's gonna rapport.
Speaker 5 (36:54):
He still wants his money, and running backs especially know
they need to be aggressive early to try to get
their value. It'll be the first time for him to
possibly get an extension if he's coming off some massive
year and on an offense where all these guys got paid.
He has a right to say, and that's gonna be
probably a tough spot to be going from. But to me,
that's one that certainly stands out when you look at
(37:16):
the eligibility in that draft class.
Speaker 3 (37:18):
Also, we found out yesterday that Mike Brown is not
worth four billion dollars. I enjoyed that moment. I see,
this is this is why I can't do what you
guys do, because then I would go three, how much
are you worthing two and a half. It's gonna be
higher or lower? Am I hot? My cold one? Like
I would want to if you say I'm not worth
(37:38):
four billion dollars. How is the next question not how
much are you worth? Are you worth? Right now? Somebody
says I'm not worth a million dollars, then I don't care, okay,
But if you say I'm not worth four billion dollars,
I have to know, like, all right, well, is how
much are we subtracting before we get to where you are? Mike? Yeah,
(38:00):
that's how do you drop the I'm not worth four
billion dollars?
Speaker 6 (38:04):
Man?
Speaker 3 (38:06):
How do you get by? How do you get by?
It's tough, tough one. Yeah, you gotta cut corners. I
thought there was.
Speaker 5 (38:11):
I actually I actually thought that was a really one
of the more interesting comments that I don't really know
what to do with. Yes, was him talking about how
I'm not I'm not in this to maximize profit. Yeah,
and you know this is when we talk so often
about the way the league is different with all these
(38:31):
new owners, Like, that's exactly what he's talking about.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
He's not out there trying to do that. Now.
Speaker 5 (38:36):
The point would be you should be trying to maximize
profits so you can pour it back into the team. Yes,
obvious is the is sort of the the other side
of that coin. But there's something adorable. It is not
that's not the right word. There's something nice about I
guess that concept. I think it's it's meant to be humble.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
That's the most humbled. Yeah. I'm not worth billion dollars. Oh,
more like a two six okay. Uh. Your w two though,
looks a lot different than mine though, right, I mean yeah,
your your tax time is a little bit different from
you than me. We know the check the NFL cuts
and I still have sweets brown and I have that
(39:20):
in common. Neither one of us are worth four billion dollars. Yes,
all right?
Speaker 10 (39:24):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
The Growler podcast, Yeah, and you did one today with
Jay and then I popped on for a while and
that was fun. And then the crossover episode. And I
mentioned this on air yesterday because I really thoroughly enjoyed
Zach Taylor talking with you and Charlie and Brian Geese's
log about Red's Baseball and his experiences with his son
and the sport of baseball. That was that was top notch.
(39:48):
That was really good. Thanks.
Speaker 5 (39:49):
Yeah, I thought it was. I mean, you don't it was.
It was the last chance to kind of do something
a little different. Uh, And I like, I like anytime
I can get somebody to that. You hear a lot
things you don't hear them asked about a lot, and
you know, credit to Brian and Charlie kind of cooked
up the idea and we were able to kind of
turn it into something that was fun. And is that
(40:10):
throwing some questions at Charlie checks He was throwing some
questions at Charlie, which I appreciate. It got him, I
mean caught him off guard. He was not ready for that. Yeah,
I like that. We're back Thursday night. Well, we have

By the way, podcast to the show, a service of
Long Neck Sports graph watch the Reds game tonight at
Long Next Redslues last night, ten eight. We'll get to
them here in just about fifteen minutes or so, because
(42:44):
I have a question. As the trade deadline gets closer
and closer and closer, and more and more folks start
to have visions of a u Haenio Suarez dancing in
their heads, which I understand, but I there's something that
I really fear about this team, and we're gonna get
to that here. Coming up in a bit. Brendaman and
Jones on baseball as well. By the way, one Bengals
(43:06):
note worth mentioning and this came down right when we
said goodbye to Paul. I had asked him the Bengals
really going to keep four running backs, and most or
many around the team seem to think that that is
the most likely outcome, provided that you know there's no
injuries Samaj p Ryan, Taj Brooks, obviously, Chase Brown, and
Zack Moss. Zack Moss coming off that nicked injury. Just
(43:28):
a few minutes ago, the Bengals announced that they have
placed him on the active non football injury list. So
we'll see what that means for his participation in training camp.
We'll see what that means for his ability or lack thereof,
to make the team. We are going to spend some
time on Shamar Stewart and Trey Hendrickson, and I say
that acknowledging this. I as a sports talk radio host,
(43:54):
Shamar Stewart and Trey Hendrickson have been pennies from heaven.
As a Bengals fan, the topics related to the two
can be fatiguing, and I acknowledge that, but I can't
ignore it. That said, as training camp gets underway, Like
just let's pretend that Trey Hendrickson retired, or hell, let's
(44:16):
do better, Let's pretend Trey Hendrickson showed up tomorrow. Hell,
let's pretend that Chamar Stewart showed up tomorrow and both
are in the fold. And that's great, And I'm sure
the happiest person in the building will be Al Golden
and understandably so, right, can you imagine, Hey, Al, You're
gonna have a chance day one a training camp to
work with the NFL's reigning sack leader. Oh and the
(44:38):
player we took in round one with your input is
here for day one of training camp. That would be great.
But even if those two players were here, there are
so many just on defense, moving parts, interesting storylines and
players who come into camp with something to prove, and
that that fact might be amplified. In fact, I think
(45:00):
it is to a degree with some of these guys
because of the fact that neither Trey or Shamar are
around the team, Like this is an enormously important season
for Miles Murphy. Miles Murphy has done next to nothing
in the NFL. And if you wanted to do the
whole like well, twenty twenty four, twenty twenty three is
going to be a red shirt year, and then you know,
(45:21):
twenty twenty four, dude, we expect a lot more than
ever before from young, cheap talent, especially first round picks.
To have a guy do next to nothing in his
first two NFL seasons is just not something that you
could live with, and it's really hard to overcome. So,
Miles Murphy man, whether Trey Hendrickson is here or not,
(45:44):
or whether Shamar Stewart is here or not. Boy, there's
a lot of guys on this team with something to prove.
Miles Murphy might be at the top of that list.
Dax Hill's on that list. Now. There were some things
that Dax Hill did last season at corner right before
he got hurt, were interesting and pretty encouraging. But then
he got hurt, and look, Dax Hill has done very
(46:05):
little in the NFL. Sounds like they're still going to
work him in at corner. We'll see if that's exclusively
inside or out. We will see. The good news is
he's healthy. The bad news is a player they took
in the first round is still a huge wild card,
even if you drafted him knowing we still had Jesse
Bates for a season and Von Bell for a season
(46:27):
the original version of Von Bell. So year one's gonna
be a red shirt for a guy who was taken
in the first round. To be a total unknown is
a failure. It's a failure by Dax, It's a failure
by the organization. That can't be the case. There are
so many guys in the secondary, Like you could tell
me that by the end of the season, Cam Taylor
(46:48):
Britt will have established himself as not only the team's
best corner, but a guy that you want here long term.
That will totally make sense. You could also tell me, Mo,
that's a guy who got bench last year. His play
is way too inconsistent. You can't count on him enough
to think that he is going to ascend to that
status of top flight corner. It's fair Jordan battles another guy.
(47:14):
What do they have? There lots of players with something
to prove, Joseph Osi and so you know, yeah, man,
And that's not even accounting for what's going to happen
on the offensive side of the ball, which you know,
there's how the dominoes fall at running back, which you know,
let's be honest, the big question most of us have
is how do they expand upon what Chase Brown did
last year and does he end up having the type
(47:39):
of production that puts him among the absolute upper crust
running backs in the NFL. There's some pretty good competition
at guard as well, But man on that defensive side
of the ball, like Al Golden, you could say, well,
they're handicapping him by not giving Trey what he wants,
and they're handicapping him by not removing the language from
the Shamar Stewart contract. They're making Al Golden's job more difficult,
(48:00):
and there's validity do that. But Al Golden's job is
tough because, like you walk into that room or you
look at that roster, man, there's a whole lot of
guys that none of us have any idea. Now, I
subscribe to what Paul Danner Junior said, I think last week,
which was on that defense, there's like nine guys who
have been drafted in the top one hundred of their class,
(48:21):
and some of those players have to turn out to
be pretty damn good, But a lot of them are
gonna have to turn out to be pretty damn good
for this defense to take a major step forward. By
the way, we didn't even talk about, like the Chris
Jenkins factor, the McKinley Jackson factor, that draft class last year.
I think hinges on those two guys, like a Marius
Mims looks like he's going to be really good. Jermaine Burton, Eh,
(48:43):
we'll see. I'm hopeful, but I'm not expecting much. I
loved everything I saw from Eric All last year. I
just I'm fearful, like that dude's never gonna play again.
And then there were the two defensive tackles. Need one
of them, man, need one of them. Ideally, both, especially
on this team, need at least one. So yeah, man,
(49:04):
we're we're going to talk about Trey and Schamar and
how do you not, right, those are important components to
the twenty twenty five Cincinnati Bengals and maybe important components
to the twenty twenty six Bengals and beyond. But with
those guys and without those guys, there's a whole lot
of dudes who over the next couple of weeks you
would like to think can do something in practice or
(49:26):
in the preseason to make us feel like this team
can count on them a little bit more once the
real games actually begin. I'll admit this to you. I'm
a little bit conflicted about Zach Taylor because there's a
part of me that feels really bad for him as
the head coach he becomes now that yesterday is behind us.
(49:48):
He is the spokesperson for the team. Now Joe Burrow
assumes some of that responsibility, and he'll talk later this week.
But the head coach of the team is the only
person that has microphones and cameras in front of them
every day during training camp, the only person with multiple
regularly scheduled press conferences. So I feel bad that he
(50:09):
ends up having to answer questions about something that he
doesn't really have anything to do with. And that's the
Trey Hendrickson contract and the Shamar Stewart contract, and yet
you know how it's going to go. He's going to
be asked every day about those two players. And I
even said on Twitter today, stock up on liquor and
get ready to play the drinking game where you take
(50:31):
a drink every time Zach says quote, we're worried about
the players who are here. And so I feel for
him to a degree because he's got to answer questions
about something that he doesn't have a lot to do
with Zach. Taylor's not the one that's not paying Trey
Hendrickson what he's looking for, and he's not the one
that is insisting on the specific language in the contract
(50:51):
for Shamar Stewart. But he's got a lot riding on
those two players showing up and being productive, staying healthy,
and helping this defense turn around the performance from last year.
At the same time, while I feel for Zach that
he has to do this, we are not giving him
(51:12):
the excuse of well training camp distraction Number one, this
trade Hendrickson outcome to this point, Let's be honest. In
early January, when we started to talk about the offseason,
didn't most of us know this was the most likely outcome.
They were far apart on a deal trade already asked
(51:34):
for a trade once. Maybe we didn't know really what
was going to happen with the edge rusher market, but
you had to at least account for the possibility that
the market was going to evolve. If you knew about
some of the players that were also looking for contract extensions,
you knew they weren't going to trade them. You knew
if they did let him explore trades, their asking price
(51:56):
would understandably be really high, which would probably preclude them
from making a trade. You knew that Trey wasn't gonna
push him into a corner and force them using public
relations tactics to give him what he's looking for. You
knew they had other guys they were probably gonna place
the higher priority on signing in part because Joe Burrow
(52:19):
plays a higher priority on signing them, and that's obviously
t Higgins. Let's be honest. You might have been hopeful
that the Bengals get something with Trey Hendrickson done, but
deep down inside, or heck, maybe even not deep down inside,
we knew when training camp twenty twenty five begins, Trey
Hendrickson is going to be either holding out or holding in,
(52:44):
Which means if you and I knew that Zach Taylor
has had let's see January, February, March, April, May, June's
six six and a half months to prepare for how
to work through a training camp with the Tray Hendrickson
thing being unresolved. Lots of time to prepare. Now, maybe
(53:05):
he hasn't had as much time to prepare for not
having Shamar Stewart during training camp. But let's be honest,
the moment that Shamar Stewart left Bengals Mini Camp, you
and I knew what the most likely outcome for the
start of training camp was gonna be. Guy, was it
gonna be here? Zach Taylor has had pretty much the
(53:26):
entire summer, all of that downtime between the end of
Mini Caamp and the start of training camp to prepare
for a training camp where the Shamar Stewart thing hung
in the balance. Also, as has been well documented, Zach
Taylor has plenty of practice as a seventh year NFL
head coach, plenty of practice and plenty of experience with
(53:50):
coaching training camp with some sort of contractual issue hovering
over it. If there's a coach in the NFL that
should have it down pat how to work through training
camp with there being a contract issue or a hold
in or a holdout, or a key player not being there,
(54:10):
or being there but not being very happy. It's this coach,
when you accumulate experience doing something, you kind of run
out of excuses if you're not able to eventually get
the job done under these same circumstances you've been working
under for years. So we'll hear a lot about another
(54:30):
training camp distraction, and I'll acknowledge it's a distraction. How
do you not Joe Burrow has said as much. It's
a distraction. It should not be one that precludes the
Bengals from hitting the ground running week one. By the way,
if you think of all these recent season openers with
the Bengals have struggled, I don't think of distractions. I
think of Joe Burrow. I call it what it is.
Speaker 6 (54:53):
Man.
Speaker 3 (54:53):
Last year, Joe Burrow wasn't quite himself. He played poorly,
by his own admission, that's why they lost the game.
You mean to tell me that the Jamar Chase and
t Higgins things being what they were were a bigger
reason for the Bengals losing to the Patriots than Joe
Burrow not playing like himself. He obviously wasn't the only
player who played poorly. They laid a total egg in
(55:17):
Cleveland two years ago season opener, Joe Burrow was dealing
with the calf issue. It was abundantly clear he was
not himself. He played terribly the year before that against
the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had his moments. He turned the
ball over six times. He was coming off an appendectomy
like that's the reason. So obviously the goal between now
(55:39):
and the start of the regular season is get Joe
Burrow to the post and ensure that between now and
then he's not dealing with anything physically. Hopefully knock on
with there's no medical issue. When he plays in the preseason,
Hopefully the team keeps him clean and upright and he's
good to go and ready to hit the ground running
in ways that he hasn't been to start this year
(56:00):
season in recent years. UH, but the distraction excuse doesn't exist,
Not for a coach in year seven, not for a
quarterback who's healthy in year six, not for a franchise
that should have plenty of practice, plenty of time going
through UH players dragging contractual issues through training camp and
(56:20):
into the preseason. It's not an excuse. Zach Taylor's a
seventh year NFL head coach. Figure it out. Five point three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty is our phone number. The Bengals of it
the last couple of years have looked woefully unprepared Week one.
I've put that on social media during each of the
(56:41):
last three season openers because it's been true. They've looked
woefully unprepared. Zach has talked and focused a lot on
using training camp in the preseason differently to have a
better result in the first game. Let's see if if
that strategy pays off. Let's see if what Zach is
doing actually achieved the desired result in a game they
(57:02):
should win on the road as favorites, this team should
start two and oho. And as much as we talk
about Zach being on the hot seat, and you've got
to hold him accountable for certain results if they're anything
shy of two and oh to start the season, barring
there being a major injury or Joe Burrow not being
able to play, that sort of thing, and we are
(57:22):
again talking about how you know they just don't look prepared. Then,
more than anything else, that's why you look at Zach
Taylor and whether or not he's the guy moving forward,
because chances are this is how the Bengals operate. Right,
every year there's going to be a contract issue, which
means every year there's a possibility of a hold out
(57:43):
or a hold in or a distraction. If you're an
NFL head coach this deep into your career and you're
that bad at overcoming distractions, you shouldn't be an NFL
head coach. So we talk about Zach Taylor being on
the hot seat. Forget the season, how about these first
two games? If what they're dealing with now with Trey
and schamar our distractions, figure it out. A coach in
(58:05):
his seventh season ought to be able to do that.
Twenty minutes after four o'clock at Moeggar on Twitter. Thanks

More on the Bengals here in a bit. Don't forget
Tony andmo training camp show ten am tomorrow from camp
will be there tomorrow, Wednesday, and Friday, in addition to
(58:27):
a couple of days next week. Let's see Brendanman and
Jones on baseball. Brady Singers last five starts have been disastrous,
and I'm concerned you should be too. We'll get to that.
Next booth is era, and I know there are other
metrics you could use to determine a picture's effectiveness, but
Brady Singer's ERA over his last five starts is seven
(58:48):
point four to eight. Red's beaten last night, fell behind
seven nothing. Still scored eight runs. Bullpen can only do
so much ten eight to final score. Last night, Reds
win the first two, they lose the next two. Look,
we asked this right when the first half, the proverbial
first half ended that over the course of the first
(59:09):
half of the season, the Reds were pretty much what
we suspected. And I think I'm speaking for the consensus here.
We thought teams starting pitching is going to be all right,
team's offense is going to be average. This is probably
a team that is going to hover around five hundred
most of the season. That is exactly what has happened,
not just in the first half, but it's continued here
(59:29):
in the first early going of the second half. Right,
what they have been all season long is what we
suspected in March, and so as currently constructed, why should
we expect the results to be any different? I think I,
along with most believe this team is probably good enough
to not creater, probably not good enough to really win
(59:53):
anything significant. We'll see hope I'm wrong about that. So
how does it change to a small degree? And it's
only four games. The first four games are kind of
a microcosm of the season so far. Win two, lose
to win to and feel good, and then lose to
the first of which was there for the taking. Second
one not so much spin your tires, not make a
(01:00:17):
significant move up in the standings, still not fall in
the standings, you know, low enough to be considered out
of it. And so you know, we're getting closer to
the trade deadline. The Reds have these two games in Washington,
which feel big to me. And I know we've said
that about a lot of games this season, but man,
when the longer they walk this tightrope, the more we're
(01:00:41):
going to emphasize certain micro stretches of the season, especially
when they're playing bad teams. They're planning a bad team
in Washington tonight and tomorrow. So win these games and
then you know, we'll see what happens when they come
home this weekend. The trade deadline does inch closer. Eight
games between now and the trade deadline. Let's be honest,
(01:01:01):
this team is probably gonna be very close to where
they are right now at the deadline. Just you've watched
them all season long. They haven't lost more than four
st rate, they haven't won more than five straight. Chances
are they're not gonna win the next day. Chances are
they're not gonna lose the next day, so we'll still
talk about them being in by mode, but perhaps cautiously,
I guess this is what I'm kind of wondering. We
(01:01:23):
acknowledge the Reds could use some offensive help, and maybe
this flirtation with Marte and right field means they're gonna
go get a third basement, or maybe at points like
this is how screwed up things are in right field
right now. They could really use a right field or
from another team. And there's a piece in Cincinnati dot
Com today that I think does a good job of
pointing out how last night's game highlights how they need
(01:01:44):
bullpen help. Are we sure they're good enough in the
starting rotation Brady Singer? Maybe it's just a bad five outings.
He certainly has had his moments this year. Brady Singer
is having a forgettable season. His last live starts have
been atrocious. Nick Martinez, I'm not even gonna focus on
(01:02:07):
the twenty one million dollars. I often don't know what
to expect. Chase Burns is going to pitch the night.
We have really liked most of what you've seen from
Chase Burns, he's still a guy who was just drafted
a year ago. And Hunter Green, even though there's some
optimism that he could appear in a Triple A game
here soon. Your guess is as good as mine now.
(01:02:27):
Andrew Abbotson, Ace Nicko Lodolo is reliable but all along.
And when we have talked about the Reds at the
trade deadline, which face it we have been talking about
since spring training, it's been bat corner, infielder corner, outfielder
and bullpen arm. And you know what, the starting pitching
is good enough? Are we sure? Are we sure it's
(01:02:53):
deep enough? And I don't know how now you I
don't know how you could say the answer is yes,
even if you just want to go by the age
old axiom that you can never have enough starting pitching,
like I don't know how, the answer is yes. So
then here's the thing, at least for me, they may
make a move at the deadline. Chances are if they do,
(01:03:15):
it's a move. Maybe not, but it feels like the
likelihood is that they'll take the field the night of
the trade deadline, no matter who they've acquired or who
they've given up, still armed with the task of overcoming
a deficiency, whether it's a bullpen deficiency, whether it's an
(01:03:38):
infield deficiency, whether it's a corner outfield, an offensive deficiency,
or the deficiency of maybe not having enough starting pitching
or not having enough starting pitching depth. So, yeah, man,
we will continue to wonder what can the Reds get,
Who can the Reds get? What are they willing to
part with? Can you kind of be and buy and
(01:03:58):
sell mode simultaneously, which many on the Internet have wandered
about out loud. But once we're done with that, like,
I find it hard to believe that we're gonna wake
up in the morning of August the first and go, God,
you know what, Nick Carl fixed everything. So it's still
a matter of how do they overcome some of their
(01:04:21):
just frankly built in deficiencies. How do they overcome the
things that over the course of the entire season to
date they haven't done well. Maybe the trade deadline address
is one of those things. I'm gonna guess the trade
deadline will not address all of those things, especially since
then it sounds like we're picking on Brady Singer. But like, dude,
(01:04:44):
it's five starts, man, Like, if this doesn't get corrected,
and we're talking about another three or four starts where
Brady Singer is just getting tagged well for a team
that has a very small margin for error, that can
sink them. So you know, again, man, I love how
(01:05:04):
they played in New York. You win series, and you're
pretty happy with that. If they win these next two
in Washington, you know, that's awesome, and then you know,
we'll see how they do in these two home series
they have before the break. But I asked the same
question for much of the first half. I'll continue to
ask it, and that's how does this team, which has
(01:05:25):
been what we suspected it was going to be before
the season, how how do they accelerate the pace? And
can Nick Krawl really fix everything everything at the deadline?
And I think, frankly, the answer is probably no. Your
thoughts on that are welcome at five one, three, seven,

event you originally known as Paul Brown Stadium today as
a training camp gets set to get under way first
practice tomorrow at ten, we'll have it for you. We'll
have training camp for you tomorrow live on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Tony and I will be broadcasting from camp as it happens.
(01:07:43):
It's also open to the public. And if you I
was telling my sister in law this today. She has
I think her little boy is eight. I think he
turns eight this summer and he's getting getting into the Bengals,
and I said, like, you gotta take him to one
of those practices, man, because it's fun to watch practice.
(01:08:04):
But Bengals players and coaches, historically speaking, and I'm sure
there have been individual exceptions, Bengals players and coaches have
in my experience, always been awesome when it comes to
autographs pictures. I do wonder how it's going to change
a little bit this year because I think training camp,
(01:08:26):
you know, in years past, most of the practices have
been later in the afternoon, and it's to a degree
kind of the end of their day, and so I'm
not sure there's always been as much urgency to go
do what's next after practice has ended in the morning.
It's a little bit different because you know, they have lunch,
they have meetings, they have more on field stuff. I mean,
(01:08:47):
it's it's a part of their workday, but it's not
even close to the end. And so I don't know,
I honestly don't know how much time is going to
be set aside for autographs and pictures. But in my experience,
and it's been since I went to training camp looking
for an autograph, but you know, being down there, and
admittedly not as much as I would like because we
(01:09:08):
have to work, but I've always gotten a huge kickout
of watching Most players will sign, most players will will
pose if they can. Some are awesome at going above
and beyond. Joe Mixon always was in my experience going
to training camp, like Joe is like a guy that
you always just got the sense was staying a little
(01:09:30):
bit longer than others. So Anyway, practice tomorrow is over
to the public and it's a good time if you
have kids. What else do we have? Unfortunately, Zach Moss
is gonna start camp on the non football injury list.
Chances are you know this. Trey Hendrickson is not at
training camp. He's in Florida. By the way, he can
be fined. Okay, he can be so hopefully hopefully he
(01:09:52):
doesn't get big mad if somebody reminds him, like, dude, Trey,
they can find you. It's in the CBA. Most people,
if they don't show up to work, thing bad happens.
Trey is on a contract, He's gonna get fined. Shamar
Stewart's not at a contract. He's not there. He's not
gonna get fined Tomorrow at Tenney am Tonimo Training Camp

(01:10:13):
again tonight in DC. Red's looking to snap a small
two game losing streak. Chase Burns is going to get
the ball. Feels like forever since he's pitched. He pitched
pretty well his last outing, which was a week ago

A little bit time here? Okay, I'm all right, very good.
It's nice to have you back, by the way. Good
to be back, uh, Jeff, Go ahead, Jeff, at like
a front row seat of the ball game last night
to Washington. You're on ESPN fifteen thirty high.
Speaker 8 (01:11:15):
Jeff, Yeah, you know, Happy Tuesday mode. Those are our
season tickets. We're right down in the handicap, well down
the left field line. If those seats are sixty five
dollars each a game at Yankee Stadium, they'd be seven hundred.
We are really really, really lucky.
Speaker 6 (01:11:35):
But we've had.
Speaker 7 (01:11:36):
Them since the stadium.
Speaker 6 (01:11:38):
We had them since the stadium open. And I love
sitting down there.
Speaker 3 (01:11:41):
Very nice, very nice. Well, you saw a game that
reminded me of like watching the Atlanta Braves in the eighties.
Speaker 8 (01:11:49):
It reminded me of bad News Bears, to be honest
with you, I mean, if the if the natural relief
pitcher isn't six four six', five that throw from right
field that not only airmailed the cutoff, man but the third,
baseman if you don't.
Speaker 6 (01:12:05):
Jump up and get, that that didn't even go in the,
dungout goes in the.
Speaker 3 (01:12:07):
Net, yeah, YEAH i was, like.
Speaker 6 (01:12:10):
What is you?
Speaker 8 (01:12:11):
Know and then you, know the The nats get the
red guys and the base runners in the, rundown they
could have just run back to second base because both
guys would have been standing. There i'm, like you, Know i'm.
Speaker 3 (01:12:23):
Just, like, uh josh As Scott barlow is like chasing
a ball along the well. Outlining you, know, right we're
close to WHERE i guess you were sitting and stands
there and watches that's like the worst played baseball Game
i've ever watched in my.
Speaker 8 (01:12:37):
Life, yeah that was on the first base, side we're
on the third, okay, gotcha and fundamentally wise and stuff
that we've been seeing for. Years but it kind of
leads me into my point in ties in with. You it's,
like all these people in the fan base are, Like,
oh we're gonna play The White, Sox we're gonna play The,
Rockies we're gonna play The, Nationals we're gonna get a.
(01:12:57):
Sweep i'm, like what makes you think that this team
is that, much marginally better than any other team in the.
Speaker 3 (01:13:04):
League, YEAH i think the last homestand kind of proved, that.
Right you, Know miami came to town and The marlins
are a better baseball team than The Colorado. Rockies but
they went four and, three and, yeah, man you know
they went To New york and played really. Well but to,
me it's we make a big deal And i'm as
guilty of it as anybody. About here's who they. Play
you've got to win. Games this team so far this
(01:13:25):
season has not been good enough to go on a
prolonged stretch of excellence where they can leap frog teams,
significantly get removed from five hundred and firmly established themselves as.
Contenders or in the short term.
Speaker 8 (01:13:38):
Buyers, well and let's be, honest if The rockies infielders
don't miss those two grounders in the last two games
of the, series there's no way to figure out how
those games are going to. Go they both would have
gone extra.
Speaker 3 (01:13:51):
Innings, yeah, yeah they dodged a bullein on That saturday.
Speaker 8 (01:13:54):
Game real basic fundamental stuff on infield in AND i
don't want to talk about some non contract.
Speaker 6 (01:14:01):
Stuff about The. Bengals real.
Speaker 8 (01:14:03):
Quick your, autograph your autograph. Thing i've always found the
best ways to go across the street and wait for
him to walk back into the locker room after practice is.
Over Trent irwin would stand there for an. Hour if
there were people who wanted, Autographs Trenton irwin would be.
There you, KNOW i Think joe And jamar tend to
keep their head down only because they know if they,
(01:14:25):
stopped they'll never get anywhere type of. Thing, yeah if
there's little if there's little kids, there or somebody with
a handicap.
Speaker 6 (01:14:32):
Or something like, that they'll always.
Speaker 8 (01:14:33):
Stop And i'm interested to get an explanation on how
in a sixty five thousand seat stadium the tickets for
this supposed open practice on A saturday. Night were gone
in two.
Speaker 3 (01:14:45):
Minutes so you know what's. INTERESTING i tried that, myself
and the first ten to fifteen MINUTES i kept getting
bumped out of the. Queue it reminded me of getting
good concert. Seats and then after about twenty twenty five,
minutes BECAUSE i WAS i was actually trying to get
them WHILE i was Doing paul And jay's. PODCAST i
(01:15:06):
did the, podcast it was about twenty five, minutes AND
i went on my phone and THEN i got. Them
but like the first couple of, ATTEMPTS i kept getting bumped.
Out it kept telling me, like you, know it's you
reserve the tickets and you hit you, know, okay or
submit to, whatever and it tells you these tickets are
no longer. Available that happened to me like three or four.
Times BUT i eventually did did get. THEM i, thought
(01:15:26):
the exact same thing you, did sixty five Thousand Seed.
Stadium it's a, Practice how can this be sold?
Speaker 6 (01:15:32):
Out?
Speaker 7 (01:15:34):
YEAH i THINK i made.
Speaker 8 (01:15:35):
Through the queue pretty much the same. Thing but it was,
like you, know no matter what quantity of TICKETS i
put in that they were. Unavailable so, well that's, Fine
i'm gonna have plenty of.
Speaker 3 (01:15:43):
Opportunities, yeah, Well i'll be honest with, YOU i can't use.
Mine they're all. Yours, Okay oh that's.
Speaker 8 (01:15:50):
Fine hey On, mondays are you gonna be doing the
show With tony On? MONDAYS i haven't heard Anything Twin.
Speaker 3 (01:15:56):
Peaks we're, back. Yes in, FACT I i just inquired
today for the people who run such. THINGS i just
asked if we knew which location we start, at and
that answer hasn't Un they don't have that. Answer but
we will be At Twin, peaks and it's going to
Be florence and it's gonna Be. WESTCHESTER i think they're
(01:16:17):
still ironing out which, ones which at which weeks will
be at which. Location but, yes we're back At Twin
peaks this, Year, JEFF i appreciate the, call manthy you
going to the game to?
Speaker 8 (01:16:25):
Night, YEAH i have a great, day mob all, right you.
Speaker 3 (01:16:29):
Do the, Same thanks so, much eleve it away from five. O'clock, yeah,
Man LIKE i am as, guilty if not more guilty
than anybody else of doing the schedule game where it's,
man here's some games they have to, win AND i
kind of view These nationals games along those. Lines the
reality is all season. Long you can credit them for
(01:16:50):
never losing a series to this, point and that means
they're never going to go on a long losing. Streak
but they they're. Not they haven't been a good enough
to this year to go on a stretch where they.
WIN i don't. Know can we just sad like sixteen
out of twenty and that's a, lot that's eight hundred.
BASEBALL i, mean it's not easy to, do but you, know,
(01:17:13):
like could you imagine them doing what The Milwaukee brewers have.
Done they've won eleven straight, games went In seattle last,
night best record in the. Sport let's expand upon that
a little bit later on in the five o'clock hour.
Plus we've got to hear What Manti teo said About Trey.
HENDRICKSON i will read you this though right. Now Diana
russini of The athletic tweets this that she just spoke
(01:17:36):
To Trey, hendrickson who is currently In jacksonville for the

That i've wanted to do that for, Years so we'll
be on ten am. Tomorrow this show will still happen double.
Duty stoked about That tony AND i From bengals training
camp starting at ten, am and then this show in
its normal spot from here in studio beginning at three.
O'clock what's Up, MULLAGER espn fifteen thirty Mikeelob ultra five
(01:19:43):
O'clock Happy hour thanks to Michelob. Ultra, hey Mikeelob ultra
sounds amazing right. Now superior, taste superior light. Beer by the,
way let's bookmark That brenneman And jones segment Because i'm
gonnattack it onto. Something i'm gonna a little bit later.
On bengals training camp does start. Tomorrow players reported, Today
(01:20:05):
Trey hendrickson not among. Them so we already know That
Shamar stewart's nowhere to be. Seen who knows when that
guy is gonna show? Up who knows when when that
guy is gonna be hit by a bolt of common
sense and decides to start HIS nfl. Career we will see.
That The Trey hendrickson, thing you, KNOW i guess part
of what makes this so frustrating is we knew this
(01:20:29):
was the. Outcome let's let's let's be. Honest maybe you
hoped for a different. Outcome maybe you thought that one
side or the other should have worked harder to achieve
a different. Outcome but when the off season, STARTED i
don't think it was that hard to predict That Trey
hendrickson and The bengals would go through the entire offseason
(01:20:52):
essentially at a, standoff and the training camp would start
with him likely not. There, well he's not. There so
there's reporting being done By Diana russini of The athletic
who puts this on social. Media just a few minutes
ago that she just talked To Trey. Hendrickson trey is
right now In. Jacksonville for the last thirty, days he's
(01:21:14):
been here in town, training but with training camp, Approaching
trey and his wife decided to leave to go down To.
Jacksonville they have received two offers in a twenty four hour,
span none containing the guarantees past the first year that
he was looking. For diana Writes hendrickson didn't want to
hear the practice whistles while being a distraction to his,
teammates so he and his wife decided to pack up
(01:21:37):
and head To. Florida he is down In. Jacksonville he
continues to. Train he continues to hope that a deal
has worked. Out the quote From, trey according To Diana
russini Of The, athletic is AND i, QUOTE i was
more than willing to take less in some ways in
order to make this. Work so there you. Go that's
(01:21:58):
directly From Trey hendrickson and according to an OUTSTANDING nfl,
Reporter Diana roussini Of The. Athletic so that's where we.
Are it's, interesting you, know we went from Yesterday Mike
brown expressing, optimism then he talked about being hopeful and
optimistic that they're close To trey not sounding optimistic at.
(01:22:20):
All this is the only question that matters right. Now
we can go back and forth and what The bengals
should be offering. Him we've done that now for two.
Years This Trey hendrickson thing has been going on for
over a. Year right before the draft in twenty twenty,
Four Trey hendrickson made news for requesting a. Trade this
(01:22:41):
has been going on for a. While so we can
discuss the validity of The bengals. Offers we can discuss
whether or not they should have traded, him and there's
an argument that they should. Have we can hope The
bengals increase their. Offer we can talk AS i have
often about the two sides needing to be reasonable and
find some room in the middle to achieve some common.
(01:23:04):
Ground right, now one question matters Is Trey hendrickson willing
to miss football. Games it's not the first time we
have talked about such a topic on this. Show it's
certainly not the first time such a topic has Been
germane to The bengals as training camp has gotten, underway
like he is under contract for the twenty twenty five
(01:23:27):
season to play for The Cincinnati. Bengals he can't play
for anybody. Else Mike brown said, yesterday we're not gonna trade.
HIM i guess he'll take him at his. Word camp has,
started The bengals can start to find. Him and by the,
way if he has issue with, that he should take
it up with his. Union these are the. Rules if
you don't show up to, work there are. Repercussions he
(01:23:50):
may have every reason to not want to show up to,
work but if you don't show up to, work there's.
Consequences is this something we're going to be talking, about
well in a, Month is this something we're going to
be talking about shortly After Labor? Day like that's what
this feels. Like this doesn't feel Like and Maybe i'm,
(01:24:13):
wrong AND i HOPE i. Am this doesn't feel like
something that within the next couple of weeks is just
somehow magically going to be. Resolved he certainly doesn't sound very.
Happy this is FROM nfl Network Good Morning football earlier.
Today Manti, tao who played forever in THE nfl after
a noteworthy career At Notre, dame is now one of
(01:24:36):
the panelists on that. Show Here's Manti tayo referencing a
conversation With Trey hendrickson.
Speaker 5 (01:24:42):
On a scale of one to ninety, one how confident
are you in The bengals getting a deal done With Trey.
Speaker 11 (01:24:50):
Hendrickson, well you're the.
Speaker 5 (01:24:52):
Inside Maybe i'm, SORRY i should teach you up as the.
Speaker 7 (01:24:53):
Inside the.
Speaker 12 (01:24:54):
Insider i'm just a brother Of Trey, hendrickson And i'm
very grateful to have that relationship with. HIM i initially
wanted to rate it a fifth ffty seven because that's
the amount of sacks that he's had for The Cincinnati
bengals ever since he became A. Bengal BUT i spoke
To trey. Yesterday he called me and we had a great.
Conversation and first and foremost Are bengals. Fans he wants
to be A Cincinnati. Bengal that's number. One he's always
(01:25:15):
wanted to stay in that. City he has a beautiful
son now him and his, wife they've established roots. There
let's get. That let's get that squared. Away BUT i, said,
well so what's the status he's like number one Tomp he,
said he's not reported to training, Camp AND i, said.
Speaker 3 (01:25:29):
Well how far are? You how far are you? Off from.
Speaker 12 (01:25:31):
Them he's, like, bro we they are, atrociously atrociously.
Speaker 3 (01:25:36):
Low and so because of, THAT i know it's one
to ninety.
Speaker 12 (01:25:39):
One, guys it's a zero for, me, okay based on
my conversation With, trey it's a. Zero AND i, said
what's what's what's the? Deal he's, like, well it's all
about the guaranteed money and jilil you know, This it doesn't.
Speaker 3 (01:25:51):
Matter what they post. Him, yeah when there is.
Speaker 12 (01:25:53):
The words up to in the, contract you you're getting
paid this and it could be up to you might
as well just count whatever number comes after those words
top two because it's never gonna. Happen trey even told
me that him and his representatives even.
Speaker 3 (01:26:06):
Offer to take less years to decrease.
Speaker 12 (01:26:09):
The length of the, contract and The bengals organization said.
Speaker 3 (01:26:13):
No right there you. Go That's Manti tayo with some
music behind him On Good Morning Football today ON Nfl,
network one of my favorite. Shows the quote atrociously, low
that's From Trey. Hendrickson trey's doing some talking, now he's
talking With Manti tayo allowing him to quote him talking
With Diana. Russini this atrociously. Low this doesn't come off
(01:26:33):
as a player who feels like the two sides are.
Close this doesn't come off as a player who feels,
like you know what progress is being. Made this comes
off as a player, who well's pretty put off by what's.
Happening he's not In, cincinnati he's In. Florida those things
could obviously change. Overnight you, know we've we've done this
(01:26:58):
so many. Times and maybe it's all The bengals fault
in your, mind or maybe it's all on the individual
players in your. Mind but every year of the question
when it comes to one of these, holdouts and one
of these hold ins is are they willing to miss football?
Games and that's right, now that's what. Matters bengals are
in training. Camp the focus is on having the best possible,
(01:27:21):
season competing for a. Championship is he going to jeopardize
that by choosing to not play the first? Game and it's,
FUNNY i could ask ten Different bengals fans And i've
kind of done this over the course of the, offseason
just On twitter polls and on this, show like do
you think he's really going to be willing to miss?
(01:27:43):
Time AND i will find folks who think that he's
going to be like any other, athlete any other, person
and at the end of the, day he's not going
to forego the money that would come with missing a
regular season. Game and then you can find folks who,
go you know, What tray's a little bit of a different.
Cat what he'll go ahead and on principal miss games
and forego the cast that comes with. HIM i don't.
(01:28:05):
KNOW i don't. Know there is a big part of
me that looks at how he is approaching. This it's
different Than Jamar. Chase Jamar chase was around and avoided
getting fined and did the bare. Minimum Trey hendrickson is
hundreds of miles away by being one, hundred by being
(01:28:28):
hundreds of miles. Away, uh he's gonna give up money
in in the and. Fines he's gonna get. Fined so you, know,
this this, thing this stance that he is, taking which
is about, money he is taking at the expense of.
Money if he's willing to do, THAT i guess to some,
level to some, degree you have to take more seriously
(01:28:51):
the possibility that he decides to forego game. Checks right,
now that's that that feels like that's the only thing
that matters at this, point if The bengals have made
an offer that is atrociously, low nowhere close to what
he's looking, for guarantee, wise atrociously, low can The BENGALS i?
(01:29:20):
Guess number? One can The bengals go from atrociously low
to something that he'll? Accept and number, two if he
doesn't or if they, don't does he choose to miss football?
Games does he set? Out and then with, that if he,
does how much more difficult Does Al golden's job? Become
(01:29:44):
and if he, does what is their pass rush going to,
do especially given the fact That Shamar stewart as of
right now is not a part of the. Mix but
that's you, know there's forty seven days between now in
the first game in forty seven days As Trey hendrickson
at A bengals, uniform AND i most of the TIME i
(01:30:08):
default to the athlete not being willing to pass up
the money they would be foregoing by missing the first.
Game but with, this this has been so, Different it's
been handled so. DIFFERENTLY I i just don't. KNOW i
JUST i don't know how anybody could say with any
(01:30:30):
even somewhat certainty that they do. Know but we're here,
AGAIN i got pull up, questions more phone calls coming
up as. Well five, one, three, seven, four, nine fifteen. Thirty.
Uh i've maintained on a few different. OCCASIONS i guess
that number, one as long as you're a RELEVANT nfl
(01:30:54):
team with good, players that there's always a, possibility a
strong possible ability at, least that there's some sort of
contract issue that you were dealing with at any given.
Time maybe it involves a hold, in maybe it involves a,
holdout but it's almost a just a nature of the,
(01:31:15):
BEAST i, guess, Right, like if you have if you
have a good team with good, players somebody's gonna want,
more somebody's not gonna be. Happy like it's just it's almost.
Inevitable you you fold that into The bengals themselves and
their track. Record AND i joked about this With Paul
Dayner junior, before like which player next year are we
(01:31:37):
going to be talking? About so he Answered Chase, brown we'll.
See my question is which Current bengals player will be
engaged in a contract squabble heading into next year's training,
camp because like, now we do this every. Year daneer
outlined it, before whether it's been this just this this,
Decade Joe, MIXON T, Higgins Jamar. Chase The Joe burrow
(01:32:00):
contract thing wasn't really, acrimonious but it lasted a. While
Now Trey, Hendrickson who's next, Year Chase brown or? Other
vote At MOEGER i, ASKED i have a pole question
about The athletics pre training camp power, rankings which have
The bengals ranked. Twelve my question is is this too,
high too low or about? Right i'll answer that. ONE
(01:32:21):
i think it's about. RIGHT i haven't done my own power.
Rankings i'm not gonna do my own power, rankings BUT
i feel like if we were to rank EVERY nfl
team one to thirty, TWO i feel like going into training.
Camp you, know we did the topic last. Week the same,
Publication The athletic had The bengals as one of the
league's overrated, teams AND i, SAID i don't believe. THAT
(01:32:43):
i think The bengals are properly. RATED i think if
you ask Most bengals fans to, like or MOST nfl
observers or fans to rank the teams one through thirty,
two where would they put The. BENGALS i think most
would have. Them let's just say in that like eleven
to fifteen range and twelve is kind of right smack
dab in the. Middle the other is which color Shom My, Desmond,
Ridder Bengals jersey b AND i think if if he
(01:33:04):
beats out this other dude to be the, three that's
gonna be my. FIRST i have NOT i haven't bought
A Bengals jersey as an. ADULT i. HAVE i wore
A Jeff blake one that my cousin gave, me because
if you know anything about, me you know how MUCH
i Love Jeff. BLAKE i Does ridder a lot. Too
(01:33:25):
if des is the, THREE i Think i'll go To,
JERSEY i Think i'll do. IT i Think i'll pull the.

jeff you're ON espn fifteen. Thirty, jeff good. Afternoon how
are you.
Speaker 6 (01:34:32):
The Only? Jeff you're my Only.
Speaker 3 (01:34:35):
Jeff, well you're the Only jeff That i'm talking to right.
Speaker 6 (01:34:37):
NOW i hear, You, jeff, OK i hear. You.
Speaker 3 (01:34:40):
Yeah can you hear me?
Speaker 6 (01:34:41):
Now, yes? Sir got, you? Buddy very?
Speaker 3 (01:34:44):
Good everything?
Speaker 6 (01:34:44):
Good all? Right, Oh i'm. OKAY i hope you're doing.
Well i'm.
Speaker 3 (01:34:49):
AWESOME i.
Speaker 6 (01:34:52):
JUST i didn't want to talk about, this this camp contract.
Thing but it's, like what the, Hell he's going to
be millions of, Dollars they're going to be a, millionaire
and they just they want to they want to bag
(01:35:12):
out of the contract because of we don't want you
to get in.
Speaker 3 (01:35:16):
Trouble, well you're you're talking About Shamar stewart.
Speaker 7 (01:35:20):
Here Ye.
Speaker 6 (01:35:22):
Stewart, Yeah, YEAH i MEAN i, Agree.
Speaker 3 (01:35:24):
AND i THINK i think With Shamar stewart this is
to me very very. Simple this right now only ends
With Shamar stewart Deciding, okay, FINE i want to start
MY nfl. Career. Yeah and and you you, know you,
could you could be opposed to the position The bengals are,
taking but YOU i think if you know anything about
how this franchise has been run, historically you know they're
(01:35:47):
not likely to back down just because he's not showing,
up just because he hasn't signed his. Waiver and SO
i guess WHAT i would say To schamar is, like
do you want to get YOUR nfl career started on
the somewhat correct? Foot and the only way that happens
is if he goes ahead in caves and gets to
camp as quickly as.
Speaker 6 (01:36:04):
Possible do you think, this, uh this money that these
football players could now accumulate through the draft before the,
draft do you think that affects?
Speaker 3 (01:36:16):
It, oh in like college nil money and the ability
to make?
Speaker 6 (01:36:19):
Money not?
Speaker 4 (01:36:20):
Sure?
Speaker 3 (01:36:20):
YEAH i think in many, Cases, YEAH i, MEAN i
think the one thing that THE nfl has historically been
able to hold over a lot of, players not, all
not most is. Poverty, Right, hey you don't have any,
money and so you're going to continue to not have
any money unless you play under our. Terms SO i, think.
Speaker 6 (01:36:39):
Yeah but those, guys those guys had people taking care of.
THEM i know they, did of, Course.
Speaker 4 (01:36:46):
But, yeah DO.
Speaker 3 (01:36:48):
I THINK i think there are going to BE i
know there are players who have decided to stay in
college because they're okay, financially and so they'll take advantage
of another year of college football and coaching and getting
ready for THE, nfl and there's not as much desperation
to leap into the draft and, maybe you, know go
ahead and get, taken but maybe not get taken as
(01:37:10):
higher as high as you would have been taken how
you waited a. YEAR i think there's also players who,
go screw. IT i don't have to take the first
thing that's put in front of, me even THOUGH i
don't have a lot of negotiating room when it comes
to the, contract Because i've got some money in my
pocket Because i've made some playing college. Football.
Speaker 6 (01:37:25):
Yeah, WELL i want to talk about My bengals training
camp experiences At Wilmington.
Speaker 3 (01:37:32):
College okay it used.
Speaker 6 (01:37:36):
TO i mean it was so. SMALL i mean it
was like any college. Anyway but my dad would take
me up there every. Year and there was a play
Where bengals had a running back Named Booby. Clerk remember
With Booby, CLERK i. Do, anyway he ran up the
middle and there was a linebacker AND i think he
(01:37:58):
was From Miami university and he hit him so hard
AND i Think Booby clark was.
Speaker 3 (01:38:03):
Unconscious that's your Fondest bengals training camp.
Speaker 6 (01:38:09):
Memory that is My that is my, no, no, no
it gets. Better, okay it gets better because the MAN
i was fourteen or. Fifteen Now i'm sixty. Six let's
fifty years, ago, sure you. Know so, anyway they had
these ropes up where these guys would come, through and
(01:38:30):
my favorite players Were Tommy casanova and Uh Carpenter Ron.
Carbenter but, anyway they came through And Baby clark came
dragging his ass up. Back boom. Boom sorry it's bad.
Work he came dragging his ass up there with his,
helmet he had grass sticking out of his. Hair he
kind of had a half ro you, know And i'm,
(01:38:53):
Like i'm GLAD i didn't take that hit very.
Speaker 3 (01:39:00):
Good all, right wellse are fond, Memories. JEFF i appreciate
the phone. Call my grandfather took me To Wilmington college
in the summer of nineteen eighty nine AND i got
a A Frish's place matt the back of it signed By, Ira,
(01:39:22):
Hillary David, Grant Rodney. Holman i'm trying to And i'm
probably a bunch of other guys who didn't make the.
Team Eric ball was on. IT i had that thing
FOR i had that thing through past. College it's a
fresher's place mat and like didn't have anything to, sign
and for some, reason we had A Fresh's place mat
(01:39:45):
in my grandfather's truck AND i got a bunch of
players to sign. It and that was the first TIME
i ever went to training. Camp more of your phone

through THE mls regular, Season League's, cup which is going
to be coming TO Tql, stadium is fast approaching with
a new and different AND i think improved format for this.
Year Tom mayo is the executive director of A League's
(01:41:21):

know he's been very. Busy it's good to have, You.
Tom how are? You, yeah, good, Good thank.
Speaker 6 (01:41:28):
You thanks for having us.
Speaker 3 (01:41:28):
ON i appreciate you doing this new format for The League's.
Cup walk us through the thinking behind this and ultimately
how it's going to be. Executed so, yeah.
Speaker 13 (01:41:38):
This is this is year three of The League, cup
taken out the first year with minor messages Into Miami Columbus.
Crew and what we saw the great games with the
matchups was The LEAGUE mx VERSUS mls matchups and so
we've more of those coming into this. Year so ninety
three percent of our games all the way through and
including the quarter finals will BE LEGA max AND mls.
(01:42:00):
Matchups so, yeah increasing the excitements and increasing the intensity
of the building from last.
Speaker 3 (01:42:05):
Year all, Right so for those who maybe haven't been
following the Reformatted league's cub, closely how will it work this?
Year so, yeah this year.
Speaker 13 (01:42:15):
We're going to be we've got the top EIGHTEEN mls
teams and we've got the Eighteen league AND x teams
are going to be coming together in A phase one.
Format so there's going to be three games and for
THE Fc cincinnati, Fans we've got three great. Games we've Got,
monterey he.
Speaker 6 (01:42:30):
Was just in The Club World.
Speaker 3 (01:42:31):
Cup we've Got, juarez and then we're.
Speaker 7 (01:42:32):
Closing out With.
Speaker 13 (01:42:33):
Chievus So july the thirty first for the first, Game
august the third for the, second Then august the seventh
for the third.
Speaker 3 (01:42:41):
Game now the top four from.
Speaker 13 (01:42:44):
Go to The Performance, tier the top FOUR mls teams
and the top Four league AND x teams were they're
battled out of the quarter finals.
Speaker 3 (01:42:53):
And then you, know sort of walk me. Through and
again there are folks who follow this more closely than.
Others how is it determined who is going to come To?
Cincinnati so we already have all those three games are In.
Cincinnati so if we when.
Speaker 13 (01:43:07):
We get into the, quarters, semis and, final there is
a privileges that goes through to the LEGAL x teams

(01:47:44):
THE Mls All Star Skills. Challenge there you, go five point, three,
seven four, nine fifteen. THIRTY i had something, Else, oh
just quickly on The. REDS i was listening to that
Segment brenneman And jones On baseball where they were talking
about The Tampa Bay, rays, who for what it's, worth
today acquired old Friend Stewart fairchild from The Atlanta, braves
(01:48:06):
and so he'll be in town this weekend when The
reds take On Tampa. Bay The rays have found, ways
in spite of some of the built in obstacles in
the sport and in their, division to consistently matter in the,
standings and in that division where you have The yankees
(01:48:28):
And Red, sox that's not that easy to. Do Now
Tampa bay is seven and a half games at a first.
Place they're certainly. Not in, FACT i think right now
they have the exact same record as The, reds but
they always figure out ways to stay. Afloat The Milwaukee, brewers,
meanwhile have won eleven consecutive games and are currently. Tied
actually right, now they do have the best record in,
baseball only team with a six hundred winning. Percentage when
(01:48:51):
we talk about like the structure of The reds and
the front office and what it might look, LIKE i
WOULD i would see if we could hire some people
who work for those, teams The, browers even if they
don't necessarily try to be or good every year playing
six hundred. Baseball now they've had to win eleven straight
(01:49:11):
games to get to sixty and, forty but still like
those teams are good every year every. Year all, right
can we take some more phone? Calls by the, way
could you hear in that first segment of this hour
there was a moment there where for about forty five,
Seconds i've never been more, lightheaded LIKE i wasn't sure
what was going to happen there for a. MINUTE i
hope it didn't come off are you all?
Speaker 6 (01:49:32):
Right?
Speaker 3 (01:49:32):
Now i'm good. Now but LIKE i was talking About Trey,
hendrickson it was like an eleven past five, o'clock and
for like forty five SECONDS i thought, like something is
happening to me that's not. Good and THEN i rebound
it and Now i'm. FINE i felt Like Tom mayo's
cell phone. Sounded But i'm. Back all, Right, bob you're
(01:49:53):
ON espn fifteen. Thirty, bob good. Afternoon how are?
Speaker 7 (01:49:55):
YOU i know what's going.
Speaker 3 (01:49:57):
ON i am sitting here conducting a race radio. Broadcast
how about?
Speaker 4 (01:50:01):
Yourself, well actually just out here in the warm sunshine
Of Bowling, Green. Kentucky, Hey, bo if if your folks
aren't busy tonight and they've got access TO, Mlb i'll
tell you WHAT i think might really be good. Tonight
(01:50:22):
The cardinals are In denver playing The, rockies and The
rockies have a guy on the mound with a nine
point something e er a.
Speaker 6 (01:50:33):
And Eric setti is pitching for The.
Speaker 4 (01:50:36):
CARDINALS i got a feeling there's going to be more
runs than a.
Speaker 7 (01:50:42):
Diarrhea.
Speaker 3 (01:50:43):
Convention, well that's not the visual THAT i was necessarily looking.
For and you, know you talk about the guy pitching
for The Colorado. Rockies It's Bradley. Blaylock but he pitched,
here not this past, weekend but the weekend prior and
held The reds to one run in five and two's.
Innings so that, era which is, terrible is not reflective
(01:51:05):
of how he pitched his most recent. Outing, now the
game before that he went on the injured list and
so he missed two. Months the game before that he
gave up twelve, Runs but in his last outing he
went five and was five and a third or five
and two thirds he was taken out of the. Sixth
he gave up just one run against The. Reds so
far be it from me to make fun of our
(01:51:26):
Friend Bradley. BLAYLOCK i can't Say Bradley, blaylock But Bradley, blaylock.
Speaker 4 (01:51:33):
As bad As Bradley blaylock can, Be Eric seedy can
match him pitch for pitch.
Speaker 6 (01:51:38):
Tonight i'm guaranteeing of.
Speaker 3 (01:51:40):
That so we're guessing that with some shaky starting pitching
and the thin air Of, denver that we could see
some runs.
Speaker 4 (01:51:49):
TONIGHT i think the first, runs first runs to twenty.
Speaker 7 (01:51:56):
Should be the. WINNERS i, mean this guy is still
throwing major league, GAMES i have no, idea And Miles
michaels is right there.
Speaker 6 (01:52:08):
Winning so.
Speaker 7 (01:52:10):
Every TIME i see these guys, PITCH i get the
feeling this is going to be their last game ever
with The.
Speaker 4 (01:52:15):
Cardinals but you, know they bring Up michael McGreevy, yesterday
who gives up two runs over seven, innings gets to,
win AND i wouldn't be surprised if he's.
Speaker 7 (01:52:26):
Back In memphis. TONIGHT i, mean it's it's the stupidest
Thing i've ever.
Speaker 3 (01:52:31):
Seen, well but doesn't. So Eric fetty is terrible this?
Speaker 7 (01:52:36):
Year?
Speaker 6 (01:52:36):
Right oh he's, pitiful, right.
Speaker 3 (01:52:39):
But did you know he? Is he is currently tied
for the major league lead in both complete games and.
Shutouts maybe, yeah because there are so few complete games
and so, LIKE i think there's like twelve guys who
have thrown one complete. Game AND i know this Because
Andrew abbott is won AND i Knew Eric fetty is.
(01:52:59):
One and then there are it's the one, hitter, yeah
and this is in the this is in The National.
League and THEN i think there are six guys who
have thrown. Shutouts they're each tied for the major league
lead with, one AND i Know Eric fetti is, won
AND i Know Andrew abbott is.
Speaker 4 (01:53:13):
Won, well hopefully when they start talking trade with a,
team somebody will look at that and, go that's the
guy we need to.
Speaker 3 (01:53:20):
Get, perhaps, well enjoy the fireworks out In.
Speaker 4 (01:53:26):
Denver oh, yeah they should be. Great and this is,
uh this is actually mosaic loss last. Year and my,
god everyone there has just thrilled to death that this
guy is checking out after this.
Speaker 3 (01:53:41):
Season, yeah they gather.
Speaker 7 (01:53:43):
That, yeah all, right well hey listen, man good good
talking to you as. Always and, uh LIKE i, said
if you're not doing anything THAT i enjoy the game
because it should be.
Speaker 3 (01:53:54):
Good, well we're you know, here we're gonna Watch reds
And nationals. Early but that game, bobs thank you very.
Much that game out In, DENVER i guess is going to.
START i would imagine what nine, Thirty so perhaps we'll
check it out in eight. Forty That red's game last
night felt like it took four and a half. Hours
that was Not, ah it was not a very cleanly played,
game so to. Speak, uh let's see, Here, mike go.
(01:54:18):
Ahead you're ON espn fifteen.
Speaker 8 (01:54:20):
Thirty first of, all.
Speaker 7 (01:54:23):
Thank, you. Mom first of, all i'd like to a
Wealthy tarn. Back my good.
Speaker 3 (01:54:28):
Buddy it's nice to Have terran back with.
Speaker 7 (01:54:30):
Us hope you enjoyed your time Watch TERRAN.
Speaker 3 (01:54:36):
W tarn. Went tarren went To nashville and for a
couple of days on his, vacation and he's come back
as a big country music. Fan he's gonna go get Cowboy,
Boots big Ten, Gallon, hey big.
Speaker 6 (01:54:47):
Country, guy now get out of.
Speaker 3 (01:54:49):
Here, no, no IT'S i couldn't believe it when he told.
Speaker 7 (01:54:52):
Me, HERE i tell tell me at yourself.
Speaker 3 (01:54:57):
That that is far from. Truth. Mike he he's become
a big fan of Honky. Tonks he doesn't want to admit,
it But tarren went To nashville and and and he's
like singing all these like old like country standards Like Johnny,
Paycheck Merle. Haggard he even asked, me, like do you
still have your Dad's Jean pitney. CDs i'm, like, Yeah
Aron hockey up so a, big big like vintage country.
(01:55:18):
Guys he's he's pretty. Excited Waylon, Jennings, yeah he's. Pumped.
Speaker 7 (01:55:23):
Yeah so what you gotta do is move out To, Bakersfield,
california the birthplace of Honky Tonk Merle haggard's from, There Whalon.
Jennings they have a statue in the middle of town
to uh. Homeboy uh think but in a minute, anyway
let me.
Speaker 6 (01:55:39):
Continue But i'm glad to hear you digressed to.
Speaker 7 (01:55:45):
THAT i am really excited about this new morning, format
And i'm sure the players are even more ecstatic about
it because it won't be quite so hot mm. Hmm
AND i just think it's gonna be. Fun you got
me jacked up for it because it's something, different And
i'm really really excited About i'm not, i'mious.
Speaker 3 (01:56:07):
Well you, know, selfishly it's it's. Fun it's fun to
get out of the. Studio it's fun to you. KNOW
i always, say LIKE I i my favorite show to
do is THE Nfl drafts because it's the one show
we do when what you're talking about is happening in real.
Time and doing shows during training camp is is sort
of a version of. That, historically when they have practiced
(01:56:31):
in the, AFTERNOON i have fomo, LIKE i want to
be down. THERE i want, to you, know see it
for myself and, uh and now we'll have a chance
to do. THAT i think the players like practicing and
then having lunch and then going about their day and AND,
i you, know more than, ANYTHING i think we can
do good shows for our, audience which is what matters the.
Most and SO i they're going to be longer days
(01:56:52):
than the. Usual but Let's, mike we don't exactly have real.
Jobs this isn't really work and, so, uh you, know
WHEN i heard we had a chance to do, THIS
i WAS i was pretty fired. Up AND i hope
we do a good. Job AND i Know tony will
it's it's up to me to figure out a way
to equal his his.
Speaker 7 (01:57:07):
QUALITY i MEAN i used to be able to tell
off and on, that you know on the afternoon on
your show in the, afternoon you were, yeah he wouldn't say,
it but you were, like, DAMN i wish it was
down there to see some see what was going on
for my own two. Eyeballs CAN i get to The
reds real?
Speaker 3 (01:57:24):
Quick you can do whatever you?
Speaker 6 (01:57:25):
Want my go, ahead thank, you. Mam.
Speaker 7 (01:57:29):
Okay what is the longest win streak for The reds this?
Speaker 6 (01:57:33):
Year?
Speaker 3 (01:57:33):
Five?
Speaker 7 (01:57:35):
Five that's gonna have to get, better budd because if
we keep doing this two and two and two and
three and three and, two, well we're not going to
get in the. Playoffs it's not going to.
Speaker 3 (01:57:49):
Happen they're just they're going to have to you, know
they have been on a eighty, two eighty, three eighty
four win pace for much of the, season and they're
gonna have to accelerate Thatw does that mean they need
a fifteen game winning, Streak, no but you're. RIGHT i
mean they're gonna have to go on a stretch where
they separate themselves enough from five, hundred and they're gonna
(01:58:10):
have to go on a stretch that enables them to
make up you, know three and a half games is not,
insurmountable but it's also not. Insignificant they they're just gonna
have to play better for a longer stretch of time
than they have at any point this. Season AND i,
certainly you, Know i've maintained all year. LONG i think
for the most, part despite some recent, cracks the starting
pitching is good enough to keep them. AFLOAT i don't
(01:58:33):
think offensively is currently. Constructed they're good enough to be
able to accelerate that pace where instead of being on
an eighty three or eighty four win, pace they turn
that into eighty eight or eighty, nine and the fewer
and fewer games they, have the more and more difficult
it's gonna be for them to quicken the, pace you,
know enough to get enough wins to get to the.
(01:58:56):
Postseason BUT i mean what they've done, again what the
first four games the second half here are emblematic of
how the season has, gone win to lose to, like
right when you feel like all right about to take,
off you, know they give two back and that at
some point that that has to.
Speaker 7 (01:59:10):
Change that's where that's where we kind of get to
see the. Fans we get to see it's The All star,
break it's the halfway, point but it's anything but the halfway, point,
right it's almost a two thirds point and or closer
to that than the.
Speaker 3 (01:59:25):
Halfway they've played hundred. Games they played a hundred.
Speaker 7 (01:59:28):
Games, yeah AND i guarantee you some of these other
teams are going to be snagging people and they gotta
do something in that.
Speaker 14 (01:59:36):
Regard BUT i got one last thing for you very,
quick as far as the trivia thing in nineteen ninety,
Seven i'm talking about pictures versus fireballers.
Speaker 7 (01:59:47):
Nowadays back in the day when guys pitched like Mister Greg,
maddox he had a seventy eight pitch shutout against The
Chicago cubs in nineteen seventy eight and won the game
four to. One eight. Pitches mm, hmm is that?
Speaker 3 (02:00:03):
REMARKABLE i think that's what we call a maddox, now
when a pitcher throws a complete game in less than
one hundred, pitches, right we call that a, maddox or
might might have to be a complete game, shutout but
like there's there's a term for, that and it's called
the maddox because of how like remarkably efficient he.
Speaker 7 (02:00:18):
Was, yep, Thanks, MA i appreciate, You, Bud.
Speaker 3 (02:00:21):
MIKE i appreciate. You we're. Done What Merle haggard your
favorite country? Artists? NOW i Know reeba, McIntyre Tray akins
Like Tray? Sakins do?
Speaker 6 (02:00:34):
You?
Speaker 3 (02:00:36):
Uh is a? Show? Over what AM? I what AM
i doing? Here how AM i? In? Time AM i?
Breaking AM? I what do we have?
Speaker 6 (02:00:41):

Speaker 3 (02:00:41):
