Speaker 1 (00:00):
Tony Pike one more time today as the Bengals finish
up Day one of training camp. Day one relatively uneventful
from the standpoint of nobody got hurt, which is a
good thing. I think this is a camp that feels
largely uneventful as it relates to jobs being opened, both
starting jobs and even roster spots. Where is the competition, Tony,
(00:22):
is Bengals training camp kids underway?
Speaker 2 (00:25):
I think figuring out what the depth of the running
back is. I think the guard position on offense is
the easy one, and I think figuring out who you're
relying on in the secondary consistently is the three biggest
needs for this team. I think the defensive line works
itself out. I think linebacker plays itself out. I think
you're getting actual battles in the secondary at guard and
figuring out who the running back after Chase Brown is
(00:47):
going to be and how those reps are divvied up.
So I think those are the competitions. But you already
you mentioned the word competition though, one of the things
I enjoy most. Looking back on Day one, Joe Burrow
post practice was mad because he said the defense one
mm hmm, I mean we're talking about day one of
training camp. The training wheels are still on and the
quarterback of the team, the franchise of the team, is
(01:10):
not joking around much in the interview. He's upset because
the offense didn't didn't need to do, or didn't do
what they needed to do in day one. I love
the tone that Joe Burrow is setting already with this team.
We talked about a school complement of weapons, but I
think just from a you mentioned competition offense versus defense today,
I thought that competition and the way Joe Burrow responded
(01:30):
was fantastic.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Yeah, And you know that the Joe Burrow tone was
to me, he picked out where he left off last year.
One of the things about last season that I think
of when I think of how it went was the
anger in Joe Burrow in media sessions on the sideline,
a guy who I think was very intentionally sending the
message this isn't good enough, We're not good enough. If
(01:51):
that carries forth until this team starts to deliver markedly
better results, I'm okay with it.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Yeah, And I think for Joe there's a spot too.
What have we done? All off would have done nothing
but praise the wide receivers and the quarterbacks and the
skilled players of the offense. It's it's it's that you
can listen to that if you're a player too. And
I think there's a point of Joe here saying, hey,
enough listening to the praises, we got work to do.
And I do think they're sewing a lot out there.
I think they're putting a lot on his plate on purpose.
(02:18):
But you know this isn't hey, let's let's read the
press clippings. This is we got a lot of work
to do as an offense. And already day one, I
think Joe Burrow setting the tone of we weren't good
enough today, We've got to be better tomorrow.
