Well, here we go. It's four minutes after three o'clock.
I'm oegar. This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thanks so much
for listening. It's a weird day today, man, because we
just did a show from training camp. And I say
it every day when it's nice outside, like dude, I
just want to do the show outside. Today we got
a chance to do the show outside. We got a
(00:30):
chance to do a show outside, not this show outside,
the Tony and Moe training Camp show. The debut today
was a lot of fun. If you were with us,
I hope you enjoyed it. We did podcast and it's
available on the iHeartRadio app. A special edition of the

painted Body, Quality of Yesterday, Knowledge of Today, broadcast area
and our guests come to us on the Ray, Saint Clair,
roofing your homes, Trusted Problem Solver Hotline, Tony is gonna
join us again. It's it's a lot of Moe and
Tony this week, and which I like because Tony's awesome training.
(01:16):
Can't report from him coming up at three forty five
the Reds. The dream is still alive of getting through
a full season without getting swept. Nick Lodolo today was
awesome and his team badly needed him to be awesome.
And I will be I be honest with you, I've
I'm not sure I've gotten over the stench of how
(01:37):
the Reds played these last two nights. But this is
what they do, right, this is what they have done
all season long. Right when you feel like they're about
to take off, they fall down. And right when you
feel like the season is about to slip away. How
many times did you hear somebody or even yourself said
to yourself last night, like, well here we go, Red's
got us to training camp. Training camp's now starting. Red
(01:57):
season is over And every time it feels like the
season is on the verge of slipping away, they picked
themselves back up. They win today five nothing over the
Washington Nationals. They come home for a weekend series against
the Tampa Bay Rays beginning on Friday. Show previews available
as always on Twitter at moeger and it comes your
way thanks to Emery Federal Credit Union, your credit union

the Emory Federal Credit Union Golf Outing, which is happening
on August eighteenth at four Bridges Country Club and is
going to be a lot of fun. Day one of
training camp is in the books, and I viewed training
(02:40):
camp Newsworthys from this perspective, Has anybody gotten hurt? No
bad news in that regard. Has anybody who wasn't here
shown up? No news in that regard. No Shamar Stewart,
no Trey Hendrickson. But here's who did practice. And sometimes
sometimes the most important things that you mentioned are the
most obvious. Joe Burrow practiced today. Joe Burrow threw passes
(03:06):
to Jamar Chase and t Higgins today. Now that sounds minor,
and it sounds obvious, and it sounds like, you know,
we're just kind of throwing in some kibble amid all
the important stuff. Out there like the elephant in the room,
Trey Hendrickson isn't showing up and who knows when he will,
(03:27):
And the Shamar Stewart situation, which nationally is getting a
lot of play and understandably so. But the most important
development for the Cincinnati Bengals as it relates to the
twenty twenty five season so far, happened today. Joe Burrow
was there for day one of training camp, and as
I was watching him, and as those who are there
(03:49):
were watching him, we were not watching to see like,
how's the ball coming out of his hand? How much
spin is on that ball? Is it wobbly? Does he
not have the velocity? Hey, how's he moving? Does he
look like he's favoring his knee? Does it look like
a calf injury? Is bothering him? Hey, I'm watching Joe,
(04:12):
but he looks like a shell of himself because he's
lost a lot of weight due to an apendectomy. Like
this is obvious, This isn't necessarily new, but it's still
very very significant, you know. Really, for the first time
since his first professional practice, Joe Burrow started training camp
(04:33):
and he was a little bit of an afterthought. But
Joe Burrow should never be an afterthought. He's the most
important player on the team. He plays the most important position,
and for many of us, he's the best player at
his position in his sport. Joe Burrow today was at
practice and he looked like Joe Burrow. And I'm not
(04:57):
going to tell you that he looked like mid season
Joe Burrow. I'm not going to breakdown what he did
in individual drills. It was a non padded practice today.
You're gonna hear Joe coming up in the four o'clock hour.
But for all the talk of let's see here Trey Hendrickson,
which we have discussed to death and we'll talk about
even further, and Schamar Stewart and the impact of the
(05:19):
draft class and distractions and new defense and how's it
gonna get fixed. Look, right now, I'm worried about those
first two games. And as cliche as this sounds, that's
pretty much it. Because the Bengals the last three years
haven't been able to win those first two games, and
the inability to win those first two games has caught
(05:39):
up to him in each of those three seasons. Who knows, man,
maybe they're playing the AFC Championship game at home in
twenty twenty two, if they don't start oh and two
and they make the playoffs. If they don't start oh
and two two years ago, they make the playoffs if
they don't start oh and free last year. So, all right,
there are distractions, and there are contract is, and there
(06:00):
are these things swirling around the team that are obviously
pretty significant. But the main reason why the Bengals have
struggled out of the gate the last three years has
been the play and the health and the comfort of
Joe Burrow. I'm not making excuses for him. I'm also
not necessarily pointing the finger at him. But if you
(06:23):
watched any of those games each of the last three years,
I'll just focus on Week one. You did not see
a quarterback who was at the top of his game.
You did not see a quarterback who was comfortable. You
did not see a quarterback who wasn't dealing with something,
whether it was the weight loss in twenty twenty two
because of the appendectomy, or the bulky calf two years ago,
(06:45):
or the residual discomfort from the wrist injury at opening
day last year. Now, there's obviously a lot that's gonna
happen between now in September the seventh, that still feels
like forever away, a bunch of practices, three preseason games
Joe is gonna play, at least, the plan is for
him to play in the preseason more than he ever has.
(07:05):
And so who knows. We're gonna be watching Joe Burrow
with uh, with our with with with our breath being held,
and we're gonna watch Joe Burrow like I've this is
an audio medium here, but like you know, are like
our hands over our like the first time, like my
daughter ever gets behind the wheel of a car and
I'm watching, but I got my hands over my I'm
(07:26):
peeking through my fingers. That's how we're gonna be watching
the Bengals in the preseason with Joe Burrow. But you know,
right now, for all the talk of Shamara and Trey
and distractions and omg, are they gonna be able to
get through these next six weeks and focus and start
fast for the first time in forever? The answer should
be yes. If the same Joe Burrow on July twenty
(07:49):
third is the Joe Burrow on September the seventh. By
the way, he was also throwing passes to Jamar Chase
and t Higgins and he a year ago. That wasn't happening,
Jamar Chase, like that first game, You can't tell me
it doesn't unfold a little bit Differently, if Joe and
(08:09):
Jamar had, you know, practice together during camp as good
as their chemistry is, as good of a relationship as
they have, wouldn't you like to have gone back and
played that Patriots game last year with Jamar Chase having
gone through training camp practices with his quarterback. Uh So,
that to me was the big takeaway. And it's an
obvious takeaway, and it's it's you know, it's it's not
(08:33):
as headline grabbing. It's not as polarizing as Bengals versus
Trey Hendrickson which just continues, and Bengals versus Shamar Stewart,
which is just silly right now. Those things matter. Those
things matter a lot. Those players playing for the Bengals
this year and being productive and how much how much
time either guy misses in training camp. Those things are
(08:56):
are important. But the most important thing for this team
is they got a dude at QB. They've got arguably
the best QB in the sport. They need a quarterback
who gets through the season healthy. They need a quarterback
early in the season who's not dealing with anything physically,
and right now Joe Burrow is practicing and he's not
dealing with anything physically. If that's the case week one,
(09:19):
I'll take my chances with this team. Five point three
seven four nine fifteen thirty is our phone number. Eight
six six seven oh two three seven seven six work
works as well. Our guests today come to us on
the Ray Saint Clair Roofing your Homes Trusted Problem Solver
Hotline Tony Pike in thirty minutes live training camp reports
three forty five, four to forty five and five forty five.
(09:41):
We got a lot on the Bengals today as training
camp gets underway. Reds win beat the Washington Nationals on
getaway Day. They avoid a sweep again. Nineteen more series
before the end of the year, and if they can
avoid getting swept in all of them, they will have
gotten through the full season without getting swept and they
can hang a banner. Nicolodolo today was awesome. You'll hear
from him. You'll hear from Terry Francona coming up in
(10:03):
just a little bit. I am somewhat intrigued by Trey
Hendrickson's desire to be a Bengals team captain. We'll spend
some time on that here in just a bit. And
I think we're kind of asking the wrong questions about
Shamar Stewart, so I'll ask the right one next. On
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station Clock. This is ESPN
(10:25):
fifteen thirty. Moigor, Thanks so much for joining us today.
If you missed yesterday with Paul Dayner Junior, he was
as always terrific. We talked about Trey Hendrickson and Shamar Stewart,
but we kind of pushed that to the back end
because I think there's other interesting things that are Bengals
related right now, and Paul and I talked about all
(10:46):
of them. If you miss that, go listen to that
chat and more on the iHeartRadio app, also on my
page at ESPN fifteen thirty dot com. Podcast of this
show are a service of Long Neck Sports Grill. By
the way, when you use the app, the best way
is to preset ESPN fifteen thirty and preset this show
(11:08):
hosted by me mo Egger and and preset since he
three sixty as well. So they're just right there. It's
like a car radio, right you just boom ESPN fifteen
thirty kind of little John Madden there, So go do that.
Thank you. The first of dozens and dozens of live
training camp reports from a Tony Pike coming up at
(11:29):
three forty five. You'll hear Nick Lodolo here in just
a second. Obviously, there's been some Trey Hendrickson news. Excuse
me because over the last twenty four hours some direct
quotes from Trey have come out, and we'll focus on them.
There is no real news to talk about as it
relates to Shamar Stewart and the Bengals, and you know,
let's be honest. I know I've done this because it's
(11:53):
it's it's fair game. My take on Shamar Stewart right
now is that I question whether he wants to play
for the Cincinnati Bengals because I think if I'm him,
and obviously I'm talking about this from a distance, but
if I'm him, I'm telling my agent, dude, I want
to start my NFL career. I want to get started
(12:16):
on the next phase of my life. I want to
start making NFL money and I want to start proving
that I was deserving of being taken with the seventeenth
overall pick. I want to prove that I could help
this team fill a need which is massive. They need
a better pass rush. That's why they drafted the guy.
(12:36):
If I'm Tamar Stewart, I want to get started. His
unwillingness to do that makes me question what else is
there in play here beyond not liking the language of
his contract. But there's also this, which I'm not sure
we've talked about a ton. Shamar Stewart's not practicing. He
was around for many of the OTAs, but he wasn't
(12:58):
the same type of active per to spin as he
would have been had he signed the waiver to practice,
or had he got ahead and signed his contract. He
was around for the first two days of Mini caamp,
but he really wasn't doing all that much. And he's
not here for day one of training camp. And my
guess is it's going to be at least a little
while before he is. Maybe he comes to his senses
and signs in a few weeks. Maybe he comes to
(13:20):
his senses and signs right before the Bengals play a
preseason game. Maybe he comes to his senses and signs
right before the end of training camp or right before
the start of the season, and then you know he
he hits the ground running despite not having a lot
of practice time. But right now he is not practicing,
And so it's to me, it's this is what I
(13:40):
wonder more than anything else. Not so much who's gonna
cave first, although it should be Schamar. It's when he
does cave. And I will say when and not if
when he does cave or if you want to be
optimistic that the Bengals will cave. When they cave, how
(14:00):
much practice time will he have missed? Like whenever this
contract issues conclusion is and however it does get resolved,
how much does the missed time compromise his ability to
be productive for this team this year. I don't think
the Bengals drafted Shamar Stewart with the idea that he
(14:22):
was going to have a red shirt season. They might
not have thought he's going to lead the league in
sacks like Trey Hendrickson. But I gotta think when they
drafted him, the idea was our past rush needs help.
Now he can help us. Now what I'm curious and
I wonder this, and I ask it somewhat rhetorically because
I'm not sure there's a concrete answer to this. But
(14:43):
what I'm curious now is when he shows up, how
behind will he be, how behind the eight ball will
he be? And how much is his ability to help
the team week one going to be compromised? How much
is his ability to have a productive, successful season. How
much are those things compromised by missing time? You might go, mo,
(15:05):
it's day one. If he shows up tomorrow, he's good
to go, and I would buy that, But he's not
gonna show up tomorrow. And it feels like even if
you think that him showing up with something that's going
to happen, it's still gonna be a while. How much
time can he afford to miss before you go, you
know what, this guy can't help us. This guy can't
help us early in the season, and maybe this guy
(15:28):
can't help us all season long. They have had players
they've taken in Round one who have gone through training camp,
gone through the preseason, gone through OTAs and the mini
camp and still did nothing. Can Shamar Stewart be better
than any number of those guys in year one without
(15:49):
going through much of training camp. That's what I'm wondering.
If I'm Mal Golden, That's what I'm wondering. If I'm
Zach Taylor, That's what I'm wondering. If I'm me, which
obviously i am. It drafted this dude to help you
this year. How much is that likely to not happen now?
Because he's not practicing, not working on his craft with
(16:10):
his teammates, not learning about life in the NFL, not
being blocked by guys like Orlando Brown. Perhaps we will
see twenty seven after three o'clock. Let's do this. We're
gonna hear Nick Lodolo in just a second outstanding start today.
Red's badly needed it. I'm kind of beyond going overboard
(16:30):
about being excited when the Reds win one game in
late July, because they've done this to us all season long.
Right when you feel like, hey, that win can be
a jumping off point, then they fall flat on their face. Conversely, though,
right when you feel like the season is on the
verge of getting away from them, well they come up big,
and the results of that is a team that continues
(16:50):
to be in contention, but not be that much better
than a team that is simply treading water. Anyway, Nick
Loodola was terrific today. You will hear the reds. Uh
I was gonna say staff, as I cannot do that
because it's Andrew Abbott. We'll say one of the reds cornerstones.
(17:13):
Even though there has been some out there who have suggested,
like Niclodola might be a guy you have to trade
in order to get a stick, in order to get
a bat. Like Okay, Niclodola was just terrific today and
you'll hear from him and so much more when we
come back on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 4 (17:31):

beat the National Snap at three game losing streak five nothing.
The final score. Nico Lodolos started and was terrific a
complete game shutout. Gave up just four hits, did not
(18:37):
walk about or struck out eight. Cincinnati got to offensive
contributions from Jake Frayley, who had a couple of hits
and drove in a run Noelvee Marte had a big RBI,
Jose Travigno also driving in a run five zip. The
final score. Reds are coming home. They open up a
three game series against the Tampa Bay Rays beginning on
(18:58):
Friday night. Has been assigned to the Arizona Complex League

(19:20):
Tony and Mo Football Show, also presented by Cincinnati Tax
Resolution and Oakley Greens from the Airport Paint and Body
Broadcast Area, and our guests come to us on the
Racing Claire Roofing Hotline Tony Pike in just a few minutes,
Let's do this man. We've talked a lot about Nicko Lodolo,
who recently his last seven starts has been just lights out.
(19:44):
He has pitched mostly like a very good and very
reliable middle of the rotation guy. Today he was even
better by the way Nicko Loodolo's last seven starts in
era of one point eighty five. After his complete game shutout,
he talked with Brian Geese's log on the fan Duel
Sports Network, Nick, we saw the smile. We still see
(20:06):
the smile.
Speaker 6 (20:06):
What of the letters CG for the complete game first
of your career mean to you?
Speaker 3 (20:11):
It's cool?
Speaker 7 (20:12):
You know, I got the rain out CG, but now
I got a real one, So no, it's pretty cool.
Just you know, I kind of I feel like I
had everything, kind of working for the most part good defense.
I got some early outs, you know, that helped me
under stay in the game.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
That home.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
You and I talked yesterday.
Speaker 6 (20:29):
What does making starts, pitching deep into games? What does
that represent for what type of pitcher you want to be?
Speaker 3 (20:37):
It's exactly.
Speaker 7 (20:38):
I mean, that's what you want to do to be
to be one of the best in the league, which
everyone's striving to be.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
You know those guys, that's.
Speaker 7 (20:44):
What they do. They keep making turns, you know, and
stuff like that. So I feel like I can do that,
and so you know, I've, like I said, we've talked
about so much. If I put myself in a position
to do that, you know, and just keep going to
start to start.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
You got to strike one a lot today.
Speaker 6 (20:59):
How does that change when you're consistently ahead, How does
that change how you can pitch?
Speaker 7 (21:03):
It's definitely, I mean, it's going to help you. You can
definitely be a little more aggressive and stuff like that.
But like I said, I got some some good I
feel like early outs too. I wasn't really getting the
three two very much or just battling, you know, I
had a couple there. But when when you do things
like that, it's gonna it's gonna help you a lot.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
There, Nick Lodola with Brian Geeson's log on the fan
Duel Sports Now working. Here's a Here's a plug for Brian.
His His podcast he does with Charlie Goldsmith is a
Reds podcast. They had Zach Taylor on their most recent
episode and it was terrific. They had Zach on to
talk about baseball, which I enjoyed. Nick Lodolo. He mentioned
(21:42):
he had the complete game, the rained out complete game,
the game against the Twins that they called after six innings.
He got credit for a complete game. Today was a
true complete game. One of the more remarkable things, and
I don't want to come off as old guy here.
One of the more remarkable things about the evolution of
this sport has been how infrequently complete games are thrown.
(22:03):
By my count, Nicolodolo, today through the twenty fifth complete
game in all of Major League Baseball this year. It's
July twenty third. Everybody's basically played one hundred games, twenty
five complete games. I'm old enough to remember when some
of the best starting pitchers in the sport, and I'm
(22:24):
not ancient, but you know what would approach you know,
fifteen twenty complete games. There have been nine complete game
shutouts thrown this year. Andrew Abbott thrown one, and now Nicolodolo.
And this isn't a criticism. I there's much about today's
baseball that I like and prefer over the game that
I grew up with. One of the things I prefer
(22:45):
about the game that I grew up with was watching
pitchers go deeper into games. And you know, Hunter Green
almost had one. Remember remember Hunter Green earlier this year
against San Francisco, Andrew Abbott did have one. Nickolodolo did
have one. There is something iced to think that's really
cool about watching a pitcher, even if he's got a
little bit of a cushion and the Red's got some
insurance runs for him. Today, I think there's something fun
(23:07):
about watching a guy go the distance Nicolodolo did today,
the twenty fifth complete game in Major League Baseball this season.
It's that that is the one area, it's one of
the few areas that I wish we could sort of
revert back to just a little bit where when a
guy took the ball, you expected to watch him pitch
more than five or six innings. Today Nickolodolo pitched all nine.
(23:32):
Speaking of complete games, Tony Pike is gonna throw one today.
He has been at the venue originally known as Paul
Brown Stadium all day. He's gonna give us a live
Bengals training camp report next on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 4 (23:44):
Station, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. Traffic from the.

Southbound Hamilton Middletown Road, there's an accident at Rochester Hills Drive.
Got that disabled vehicle as well. Southbound seventy one seventy
(24:12):
five approaching Kyle's Lane. The right lane blocked off there,
and on State Avenue, it's an accident over at Guest Street.
I'm at Ezelic with traffic first.
Speaker 8 (24:23):
With the latest from Bengals training Camp. Brook You by
Camber Credit Union on your official home of the Cincinnati Bengals,
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (24:34):
He is on the Ray Saint Clair Roofing Hotline. Tony Pike,
who has been at Bengals training camp all day, beginning
at ten o'clock this morning. The uh, the training camp
content doesn't stop hourly. Training camp reports three forty five,
four forty five, and five forty five Tony, how we.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Doing, Hi, Mel, how are you?
Speaker 3 (24:53):
And I'm doing well. I'm just I'm pleased that I
have the opportunity to talk with you because it's it's
been a while.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Yeah, and there's so much to get to. We've barely
even scratched the first surface of what we've covered.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
This is very true. Day one of training camp is
typically the start of a ramp up. Right, You're not
going to see the most intense practice. You're not going
to see guys hitting, guys aren't wearing pads. But you've
covered and have been through a lot of training camp
Day one practices. Did today feel ordinary in that regard?
Speaker 2 (25:26):
It felt a little different in the sense that I
thought the tempo was a little more, a little faster
and look in previous years, it felt like they were
off the field in an hour. I mean you were there.
They stayed on the field till about eleven forty five.
They got a lot of work in. I think the
ability of them offensively to have all hands on deck
(25:47):
allows them to install more and I think that goes
in a little bit to Joe Burrow after practice saying, hey,
the defense one, we need to be better. I think
that's on purpose. I think with Joe Burrow now as
a veteran, as what you talked about, he was out
there practicing with no restrictions. I think they want to
throw more at him. I think they want to throw
more at the board and see what sticks and then
(26:10):
go back in the film and correct it. But this
is an offense now for the most part, there's got
a lot of veterans on it, and when you have that,
I think it opens you up to be able to
do more. And I think that's what they're going to
try to accomplish starting today with practice one.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
Jamar Chase was the best wide receiver in football at
least the most productive wide receiver in football last year,
and we saw the Bengals expand on how they've used him.
They did so last year without the benefit of having
him go through training camp because of his holding. I
think one of the fun things to think about this
year is with the benefit of him being on the
field and practicing, can they come up with more ways
(26:45):
to utilize him, can line him up in places that
he hasn't lined up in before. And if the answers
are yes, then it's weird to say, coming off the
season he had last year, this guy really is the limit.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
Well, Joe was asked today about what are you trying
to work on and he said everything he said the
second you don't, you get passed up in this league.
And now that's the task for Jamar Chase. Look, every
defensive coordinator spend their offseason in film study of Okay,
what are his strengths? What are Jamar Chase's weaknesses? He's
the best receiver in football? How do we slow him down?
(27:20):
So if you just roll out, if you're the Bengals
and use them the same way you did last year,
teams are going to have an answer for that now.
So what can you do? What new wrinkles can you add?
I think it's important, as we talked about earlier, if
t Higgins is available for seventeen games, it makes it
really hard to focus in on just Jamar Chase. But
if you're not evolving, if you're not finding new ways
to get him the ball and line them up in
(27:41):
different spots, then teams are going to figure it out
and they're going to slow you down offensively. So it's
the only option you have if you're the Bengals and
Jamar Chase.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
And this is something you referenced as well. Al Golden
has to fix the defense, and yeah, maybe that's going
to start with the pass rush, but if he's really
going to fix it, he's got to get more out
of this secondary. If I'm him, I want to see
which one of these guys can make a play on
a T. Higgins or Jamar Chase. YEP.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
If I'm Al Golden, whether it's one on one, seven
on seven team, I am matching my guys up with
Jamar Chase and T. Higgins as much as possible because
that's the only true way you can evaluate this. You
get that on the field, you go and watch the film,
you teach from it, and then you see, okay, can
they take the coaching and move to something else. I
think that is so fascinating in all of this, because
(28:28):
you're gonna have reps that you win. You're gonna have
a lot of reps you lose, especially when you go
against Jamar Chase and T. Higgins. But that old iron sharpens.
Iron adage is if you send your guys that you're
gonna rely on against t Higgins and Jamar Chase on
every day, then just by reps alone, they're going to
get better before the start of the regular season.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
You know, I asked you at the end of SINCY
three sixty about Trey Hendrickson, who wants to be team captain.
Would you object to me being ESPN fifteen thirties team captain? No?
Speaker 2 (28:55):
Put it in the contract.
Speaker 3 (28:56):
Okay, you're okay with that?
Speaker 2 (28:57):
You are you signing a new deal? Un?
Speaker 3 (29:01):
Well, no, I have nothing to announce. But I feel
like if being a team captain is a big deal,
like I want I now want that on my resume.
I'm ESPN fifteen. It's only four of us, so I
want to be team captain.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
Lucky I was lucky enough.
Speaker 3 (29:15):
I was.
Speaker 2 (29:15):
I was a captain in two thousand and nine, so
I got my fill and I want you to experience
the parks of being a captain. Now for the SBN
fifteen dollars team captain?
Speaker 3 (29:24):
What were your responsibilities?
Speaker 2 (29:26):
Zero? Hopefully win the coin talk? How was it?
Speaker 3 (29:31):
Hey, Well, we'll chat again coming up in just under
an hour. We're looking forward to it. Thanks well, Tony

Tony doing his training camp update on the Ray Saint
Claire Roofing Hotline. Looking forward to that again at ten am,
and I mentioned this during that show today. We found
out we're gonna be doing this a few weeks ago
and broadcasting from training camp. But just selfishly, when you
(30:18):
get into this business, there's certain experiences you would you
would like to have just because you love the business,
you love the industry, you love sports, you love a team.
And so for years I've always wanted to just broadcast
from Bengals training camp. And then once you know that
became reality, then it's like, well, what's it going to
be like? And I had a lot of people ask
me like, well, what's your setup going to be? And
(30:38):
I literally did not know. I want to thank the
Bengals for giving us an awesome setup. We are right there,
just next to one of the fields. They've got a
tent over us, kept us hydrated all morning long, which
is not insignificant, and rolled out the red carpet for us.
And I don't necessarily think like you did something that
(31:02):
other teams don't do, perhaps for their radio partners, but
they still they still did a really nice job. And
we beat up on the Bengals when they deserve it
for their performance on the field or for how they
build their roster and that sort of things. But whenever
we've worked with them on anything, their part of it
(31:22):
has always been first class. In tom Notch, and I
would be, I think, remiss if I didn't go out
of my way to mention that publicly that we really
do appreciate them taking good care of us. We're back
tomorrow and we're looking for it, looking forward to it.
Starting at ten am. We got to talk about Shamar
Stewart from a different perspective. There's also something that happened
(31:44):
during training camps practice today that I thought was very
very encouraging. And Trey Hendrickson apparently wants to be a
team captain now, I think the team captain is something
that the players have a say so on. I'll tell
you how I would react to that if I were
one of Trey Hendrickson's teammates. Plus, we'll hear from Zach Taylor.
(32:07):
We'll get more reaction from Washington Reds beat the Washington
Nationals today, excuse me by a score of five nothing

Trusted Problem Solver, Hotline. Red's win today five nothing over
the Nationals. Yes, they avoid getting swept. They haven't been
swept this season. That is like we make fun on
social media, like, oh, they'll have a banner for that,
but you're not. You're not gonna lose three, four, five, six, seven,
eight nine games in a row. If you don't get
(34:00):
what they obviously did. Just lose three games in a row,
but you're not gonna have this prolonged losing streak they
have to. Last night was game number one oh two,
so coming into today they had sixty games left. The
math for me is very simple, very simple. They got
to get to eighty eight wins. Now, I know, I
know you're gonna go, Okay, what if they win eighty seven?
(34:22):
The kid can eighty seven to it. By the way,
for what it's worth, the Padres did lose today, and
San Diego has been the team the Reds have been chasing.
So that's that's good news. But the Padres have been
setting basically an eighty eight to eighty nine win pace.
Reds are two and a half behind San Diego. I'm
(34:43):
gonna say eighty eight wins. Coming into today, the Reds
had sixty games remaining. To get to eighty eight wins.
In their final sixty games, they have to go thirty
six and twenty four. That's six hundred baseball. Now they
won today, so now they have to go thirty five
and twenty four over the final fifty nine games. But
(35:05):
can this team, starting in their starting today, in their
final sixty games, play six hundred baseball when they haven't
played six hundred baseball all season long? Their off season
priority is already abundantly clear. We're going to get to
that here a little bit later on in the five
o'clock hour, you'll hear the best of Zach Taylor and
Joe Burrow from earlier today, Day one of training camp
(35:26):
in the books, no major news to report, which I
don't think is a bad thing because major news during
training camp practice usually means somebody got hurt based on
us being there. Today, I didn't see anybody get carted off.
I didn't see anybody limp Off. Still know Schamar Stewart,
still know Trey Hendrickson. When we started as Paul Dayner
(35:52):
Junior puts it trays of our lives, which we knew
coming into this offseason was going to be this long
drawn out thing, contract squabble, maybe another trade request. We
knew this was going to be a long drawn out thing.
There were some who brought up the fact that in
(36:13):
his four years with the Bengals, despite being very productive,
despite being one of the very best free agent acquisitions
in franchise history, he has never been named team captain. Now,
NFL teams like the Bengals last year had eighteen captains.
(36:34):
It's like it's like fifteen percent of the team was
a team captain last year, and I get it, there's
different units. Trey has never been a team captain. Diana
Russini of The Athletic has quotes from Trey Hendrickson from
last night where he talks about his decision to not
show up to training camp. Says he's training in Jacksonville,
(36:58):
says I quote here. I spent the last thirty days
at my home in Cincinnati, which is across the river
from the stadium. We were given two offers within a
twenty four hour period, and neither of them had the
guarantees we were looking for. I wanted to be there,
but there's no way I would be able to sit
there in the house and hear the practice whistles while
also being a distraction. I didn't want to ruin the
other ten guys twenty twenty five season on my contract language,
(37:22):
and he continues, I was more than willing to take
less in some ways in order to make a deal
work to accommodate the presented needs. I verbalized to the
Bengals that I wanted to be a captain to lead
a young defense, and once Shamar Stewart gets back in camp,
I wanted to pass along the knowledge that I have,
(37:42):
just like Cam Jordan once did for me. As I
see its Shamar and I are not competitors, were teammates.
I'm excited to go to work with him when the
time comes. But the part there that I want to
focus on is he says I wanted to be a
team captain. Maybe he has a burning desire to lead
(38:03):
and wear that captain c on his chest and assume
a leadership role that I think is I think it's
fair to wonder who the leaders on this defense are
going to be, right, Like, you know, there's some dudes
who have been here for a while that aren't here anymore,
like Sam Hubbard, and like Mike Hilton. Jermaine Pratt's been
a team captain. So I certainly can admire anybody who
(38:23):
says I want to be one of those leaders. But
if I'm one of Trey Hendrickson's teammates. If you're one
of Trey Hendrickson's teammates and you hear or read the
guy say I want to be a team captain, aren't
you thinking to yourself, Gee, you sure have an odd
(38:43):
way of showing it. Let's see twice now, within the
last let's see fifteen sixteen months, you've requested a trade.
You didn't show up for any of the OTAs. The
one time you did make an appearance, you didn't exactly
go out of your way to like work with your teammates.
(39:04):
You stood there and talked about yourself. When I think
of team captains, I don't know about you. I don't
think of guys. I don't think of teammates who prioritize
themselves like you want to be a team captain. Well,
when we were putting in the work during OTAs, during
mini camp, where were you besides wearing your golf clothes
(39:29):
to show up while we're mere feet away to talk
about yourself. You're a captain. You spent the off season
shopping yourself, seeing which other teams might be willing to
take you on, to extend your contract, to give you
the money you're looking for. From my individual perspective, those
(39:49):
things are all fine. He had the freedom to do that.
He's looking out for himself. He's trying to capitalize on
the exploding edge Rusher market like me, talk radio host
Bengals fan. That doesn't bother me. Bengals gave him permission.
He did what he was given permission to do. But
if I'm one of his teammates, wait a minute, man,
(40:11):
Like while we've been trying to rid ourselves of the
stench of last season, and while we've been trying to
work on a defense that cost last year's coordinator his job. Bro,
where have you been? You want to be a captain? Like,
I can be dead wrong about this. I feel like
team captain is not something you necessarily put in a
(40:33):
language in the contract. It guarantees you that role. It's
voted on. A team captain is is I think mostly ceremonial.
Not sure what they do beyond come out for the
coin flip. But like, team captain only has legitimacy if
the players buy into you. Be honest with you. Man,
you could be my teammate, Go sack the quarterback, go
(40:55):
have a great year. But you want me to look
at you as one of the captains? What have you
done to deserve to be a captain? Like, there's lots
of players who are productive that aren't necessarily leaders, that
you might argue don't necessarily deserve to be team captain.
Like you want to be a leader. You want to
be a team captain. What have you done to show
(41:19):
that you care at all about taking on those responsibilities?
Because I would think that one of the first things
you have to do to be a team captain is
actually be there, especially now. This defense was atrocious last season.
This defense has a lot of guys who have a
lot to prove, including players who play the same position
(41:42):
as Trey. This defense is a new coordinator, and there's
always some difficulty with that. Like, there's a lot of
stuff here that a team captain could help navigate. But
you can't do it from Jacksonville, Florida. You can't do
it sitting on the beach with your wife complaining to
reporters that the Bengals are lowballing you. You can't do
(42:05):
it in your your fresh outfit from Travis Matthew or
Golf Galaxy or whatever that you show up to practice
in and stand there and talk about yourself. Want to
be a team captain, then do some team captain stuff
and you could start by kind of being there. By
the way, he's under contract for the team. Yeah, the
(42:26):
OTAs were voluntary. Joe Burrow missed one practice to go
to the met gallot and, by the way, in some
corners of the internet took crap for it. But you
know whose legitimacy as a team captain I buy into
Joe Burrows. You know whose legitimacy I bought into as
a team captain even though his usefulness as a player
(42:49):
kind of expired. Sam Hubbard, My guy want to be
a team captain. That's cool. You can't be a team
captain from eight hundred miles away team captain? And so, man,
I don't know. I'm sure there's a lot of players
on that team that Trey Hendrickson has the support of,
(43:12):
and I'm I would be willing to bet all of
them won him back because they know how good he is.
But I don't know about you, dude, Maybe you view
it differently. If if I'm one of his teammates and
I read this guy wants to be a team captain? Cool,
How are you gonna do that? From the beach? How
are you gonna do that? If we're wondering if you're
gonna show up for game one? Like, do you get
to miss the first couple of games and then be
(43:33):
the team captain?
Speaker 8 (43:36):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (43:36):
No, Man, you say you want to be a team captain,
got a weird way of showing it, right. Five point
three seven four nine fifteen thirty is our phone number
at moegger on Twitter. Thanks to Delta Dental Brendanman and
Jones on Baseball is about thirty five minutes away. Another
training camp report from Tony Pike coming up at four
forty five. Trey Hendrickson's a terrific player by all all accounts,
(44:00):
A good guy again, man like if he might be
the greatest free agent acquisition in Bengals history. In fact,
I think he is. I haven't vetted that particular opinion
out all that much, and this franchise has been better
for having him. And I think there's much about his
stance that makes sense. I get it. The market has exploded.
(44:21):
He wants certain guarantees. He wants to be treated by
the Bengals as one of the elite players at his position.
I don't know how you don't understand that. I don't
know how you don't respect that. I don't know how
you don't see his point of view. But I don't know.
Man like team captain thing, dude, he could have negotiated
with the Bengals all along and come to OTAs and
(44:44):
he could have. He could be negotiating with the Bengals
right now and be in a meeting room with Miles
Murphy and some of his other teammates like, what's next,
Shamar Stewart's gonna ask to be a team captain too.
I read that last night from Diana Russini and I
laughed out loud. I'm like, guy wants to be a
(45:05):
team captain. He's never here, it's never around. It's like,
you know, the the dad who never shows up in
a in a divorce family saying I want to be
a positive influence on my kids. Like, well, you can't.
(45:25):
You can't do that if you're not there, dude. And
I know, I know this may come off as like
a really antiquated, sort of seventh grade way of looking
at things, but this team could, this defense specifically could
use some leadership, could use Al Golden can certainly use
somebody who makes his job a little bit easier and
his job is hard. Uh So, yeah, man, if I'm
(45:48):
Al Golden and I'm like, I want to be want
to be my captain? Can you be here tomorrow? If not,
We're gonna find some other. And by the way, team
leaders don't necessarily have to have the captain label, right,
I mean, there are players who could show younger players
the ropes, could step up, can lead their teammates and
not have a captain designation. But you want to lead
(46:09):
the team, you can't do it from Jacksonville. Want to
lead the team, Can't do it from the golf course.
Can't do it from Pat McAfee set. Can't do it
if you're constantly on the phone with reporters crying about
your contract. Eighteen minutes after four five point three seven
four nine, fifteen thirty, Trey Hendrickson is among a handful
(46:39):
of players on this team that can prove people wrong.
We'll get to that, uh and you'll hear Terry Francona
as well. Red's one today. It's eighteen after four o'clock.

Let's talk to other folks out there in the vast audience.
Diehard ESPN fifteen thirty listeners. Mike, go ahead. I cut
(48:26):
you off abruptly yesterday. My apologies for doing so. You're
on ESPN fifteen thirty. What's up, Mike? Oh, it's one
of those days when Mike is not paying attention. It's
those one of those days where he might be asleep
at the wheel. We'll give him one more shot at it. Mike,
Mike is not there, well, we hope Mike as well
(48:50):
and getting through his Wednesday afternoon. It's always a pleasure
to hear from him, and I'm sure he'll call back soon.
By the way, like there's with with Trey hendricks and
there's a hesitation to pay him, and it's you could say,
because it's because the Bengals are cheap and stingy and
antiquated on how they do things. But there's they have
(49:13):
legitimate reservations about his age. He's going to be thirty
one by the end of the season. They have legitimate
reservations about, you know, whether or not because of his
age he'll be able to continue to play at the
level that he has been playing. And I also think
his deficiencies against the run are part of this. Like
(49:36):
the side by side comparison of Trey Hendrickson versus TJ. Watt.
Both are awesome pass rushers, where TJ has historically separated
himself a little bit, and a lot of pro football
focused metrics bear this out. Is TJ. Watt is better
against the run. I would imagine there are people who
look at Trey as a great pass rusher, but you know,
(49:58):
somebody who against the run doesn't bring that much to
the table, And so do we want to pay him
commensurate to guys who are a little bit less of
a quote one trick pony. That one trick that Trey has,
he's awesome at and it's an important trick. And they
obviously have said and stated and tried to give him
a pay raise. But like, if I'm Trey, there's a
(50:18):
part of me not that I'm just going to take
the next off for the Bengals give me, but I
would like to get to work proving them wrong. Like, dude,
you think I'm an age, you think my best years
are behind me. You think I'm a one trick pony.
You think I can only play on the edge, Like
move me up and down the line in now golden system,
and I'll show you what I could do. I you know,
like it's the Schamar Stewart thing, which God knows we
(50:39):
have beaten to death. My basic stance on this is,
I'm not sure you want to play here. And if
I'm Schamar Stewart, like there are growing narratives about me.
One accompanied me through the draft, which was not very productive.
Can't finish place, can't get to the quarterback four and
a half sacks. I want to get to work proving
people I'm better than that. I want to get to work,
(51:02):
proving people like, yeah, I do want to be here.
I want to get to work, proving people like I
was worth being taken with the seventeenth overall pick. I
also think it's one of the more interesting players on
this team. You know, Tony and I were doing on
the show this morning, you know the whole like, well,
who has something to prove here, Who's you know, who
you're paying attention to, Who's kind of flying under the radar.
It's hard for a player of T higgins stature to
(51:23):
fly under the radar. But T Higgins has a hard
time staying healthy. Played in twelve games last year, and
one of the reasons why he you know, apparently wasn't
in their long term plans until Joe Burrow changed their mind,
was I'm not sure he could stay healthy. A whole
series of lower body issues, leg issues. T Higgins, Yeah,
(51:44):
I got my money, but part of me that wants
to still stick it to the Bengals and go. Don't
think I can stay healthy? Here you go. We'll see
UH twenty eight after four o'clock UH Tony Pike in
just about fifteen minutes. You'll hear Joe Burrow and Zach
Taylor in the next hour of the show as well.

they have an alternate helmet. They have a brown I'll
be honest with you many Brown's new brown hemet's cool look.
(53:54):
I you know, I enjoy making fun of the Browns.
I have enjoyed watching the Internet make fun of their
video where they revealed the new helmet and a guy
fell into Lake Erie, which I don't understand what was
going on. I think the brown helmet is. Are they
still complaining about the fact that the Bengals have orange

And now they come home Tampa Bay Race here on Friday,

a six game Homestand that's actually not true. That's actually
not true. It's a seven game Homestand and then they

go to Tennessee to play a baseball game at a
at a racetrack. I sound like I don't understand why
they're playing a baseball game at a racetrack. I certainly do,
and I'm curious as to how that's gonna work. The
racetrack game is technically a home so I guess it's
(55:02):
an eight game homestand but one of the games is
going to be at the Bristol Motor Speedway and they're
close to Atlanta. Bristol, Tennessee is closer to Atlanta. Yes,
I do think it's cool. I will be out of town.
Not that that matters to anybody. I've said this in
the past, if you're going to the game at the racetrack,
(55:23):
I hope you have a great time the game at
the racetrack. Among these sort of one off events that
baseball has held, this is one that I like. I'd
killed to go to the Field of Dreams game. I
would have gone. I'd love to go to the Williamsport,
you know little League Baseball game that they have a
few of the other one offs. You know they played
in Mexico City a few years ago. I'd go the
(55:43):
sidelines for the game at the racetrack. Don't look that
fan friendly? Maybe not. I would maybe go if they
ran a car race while the baseball game was happening.
And I say that as somebody who doesn't really like
car racing. But here's what I think the cool part is.
The day before the Reds play the Braves of Bristol,
they play a twelve forty Friday afternoon home game. Sign

nine o'clock. Tony Pike another Bengals training camp update. In
just a few minutes, I mentioned Nicko Lodolo Reds did
win today, and there have been so many times this year,
and there have been so many of them that you're
(56:27):
kind of getting exasperated with him right where it feels like,
oh boy, you know, here we go, seasons teetering on
the brink. If they don't win this game, it could
really spiral out of control. We just did this, what
two weeks ago with that Marlin series where you know,
they lost the last two in Philly, didn't have a
good road trip, lose the first two against Miami, and
it's like, you know what, seasons kind of on the
(56:47):
verge of getting away from them, and then they you know,
they win and you know, even like they lost that
Cardinals series in Saint Louis, they lost the series finale
against Minnesota, lost the first two in Saint Louis. Yankee
are coming to town. Oh man, you know this, this
could get away from him a little bit. And then
they won that game against Saint Louis. They've had a
few of those this year, even to a degree. You know,
(57:10):
the Arizona series where Cees came back. They had played
poorly in Chicago, had played poorly against Milwaukee, lost those
two series against the Cubs. Okay, well you know what,
this could get away from them, and then they beat
the Diamondbacks. They've had a bunch of those. Today was
another one, and we're getting tired of framing games that way.
But that doesn't make today's win any less significant. Here's
(57:32):
Tito the Infallible, the Reds manager. Talking with reporters after
today's victory.
Speaker 9 (57:37):
Nick pitched the way that he did. What did you
see and how he managed things today?
Speaker 10 (57:41):
So I'll tell you well, I mean, and again, I know,
scoring it a five to nothing, that wasn't a five
nothing game, that was one nothing, and you know he
had to pitch through.
Speaker 3 (57:49):
That the majority of the game.
Speaker 10 (57:52):
I thought as a game went, he got stronger, which
is a really good sign. You know, break them ball
has been a weapon, and as he holds his velocity
the entire game, he threw strikes.
Speaker 3 (58:07):
He just really pushed a great game.
Speaker 9 (58:10):
You've made it clear you want your guys to get
those opportunities to finish when they when they earn it.
Did he make that decision pretty easy for you?
Speaker 10 (58:17):
Oh yeah, I mean I think and again if it
scores you know, two nothing or one nothing, we we
u pegone that was ready. But I think there's days
and they don't come about a lot. But I think
it's good for them to know they can do it
and to be able to finish something they started.
Speaker 3 (58:33):
I think that's healthy for him, represents.
Speaker 9 (58:36):
Another step for him and in his kind of maturation
in the season that he's having.
Speaker 10 (58:39):
That's kind of you know, it's it's you know, everybody's
talking about him being in a career high and things
like that. But he looked, he looks like the tank
is not pointing the wrong direction.
Speaker 3 (58:49):
Given the tank is not pointing in the wrong direction.
One point five, I'm sorry. One point e ra for
Nicolodolo in his last seven starts. Brendanman and Jones on Baseball.
Just about fifteen minutes away. Tony Pike is five minutes
away from Bengals training camp on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 4 (59:10):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic.
Speaker 5 (59:14):

Also got a crash on southbound seventy one between Taft

there and southbound seventy five. Slow traffic from Sheppard to
Paddock on that Ezelic with Traffic.

He has been there all day long giving this delay
this Bengals winding down, day one of training camp. Tony
Pike is is here, Hi, Tony.
Speaker 2 (01:00:05):
I'm well, I really need to readjust my sunscreen game
if I'm gonna be here this long every day of
training camp. I've run out of a whole bottle of
sunscreen at this point today.
Speaker 3 (01:00:14):
What I was going to say is, you know, the
training camp practice ended and then the grounds crew was
out there, and you've got some downtime between these training
camp reports and you know you were telling me today
you've got to get to work cutting your grass when
you get home, so you know how to use the
art equipment. I mean, maybe you could help those guys.
Do they pay You would have to ask that. I'm
sure they do.
Speaker 2 (01:00:35):
If they pay, I'm going to be interested in that.
If not, what I might have to do mo Is
grab a football. We might have to play some costs tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:00:42):
I look forward to that. No Trey Hendrickson, No Schamar Stewart.
Here's the part of the Shamar Stewart conversation. You and
I had it this morning, but I think it's worth
having again here today. It doesn't seem to be anywhere
close to a resolution where he comes back and joins
his team. Everybody is holding out hope though, that he
(01:01:02):
still comes to a sensus, signs his contract and plays
for the Bengals this year. How much time could he
afford to miss before it really compromises his ability to
help the team his rookie season.
Speaker 2 (01:01:15):
I don't think he can miss much more at all,
and I'm talking about a day or two. We're in
the process right now where it's not well, he was
here for the summer and he was on the field.
He was here, but he didn't do anything on the field,
so he's not taking one actual rep or he's lined
up on the defense for Al Golden and has to
go through his responsibilities and what to do. It's already
(01:01:35):
difficult in the NFL to adjust to the speed of
the NFL. For a guy also who struggled not beating
his man but getting to the quarterback in college, well,
you got to be even faster in the NFL. So
you got to build yourself up to that speed. You
got to be in the right condition and I'm not
running on a treadmill and training, but actual football conditioning
you need to happen, and the only place you do
(01:01:56):
that is on the actual football field going through the reps.
So at this point, I don't know how much he
could help if he came back today, because you're already
missing out on so much, and you've already you've also
going to reward the guys that have been here and
the guys that have put in work, and the guys
that deserve those opportunities as well. I don't know if
it's past Friday when we finish up this week's training
(01:02:18):
camp reports, if Shamar Stewart's not here. I don't know
how you go into the season operating under the idea
that he's going to help you at all. Maybe you
have seven to ten plays and a package for Shamar Stewart.
But the one thing you can't do if you're Al
Golden is have all of these players on defense busting
their tail and working at a fast pace, and then
(01:02:38):
on the other end, with the other hand, you gotta
walk Shamar Stewart through everything. You can't do that as
a coach, especially when you're a new coordinator with a
new defense. That can't happen. So I don't think there's
a possibility if he's not back here by Friday, that
he has a huge impact on the team this year.
Speaker 3 (01:02:53):
And the more we have this conversation, the more the
spotlight on Miles Murphy intensifies.
Speaker 2 (01:02:59):
Yeah, Miles Murphy, put up, her shut up. I mean
he was originally drafted. We talked about Jermaine Burton today.
Miles Murphy was essentially drafted to replace Trey Hendrickson when
Henderson was done, much like Jermaine Burton was going to
be drafted to replace Tee Higgins. Now te Higgins is
still here. Hendrickson got another deal, But the thought with
Miles Murphy was you're drafting him in the first round
to be the guy when Sam Hubbard and Trey Hendrickson
(01:03:20):
are done. Sam Hubbard's done that now needs to be
Miles Murphy. And he has shown promises at different points,
but nothing that I think has staying power to this point.
He's got to be much more consistent, and like we
talked about, he's going to get all the opportunities in
the world to be that one more.
Speaker 3 (01:03:39):
This is a part of the season that we have
spent almost no time on during the offseason. But that's
something we talked about a lot as last year unfolded.
And that's the kicking game. And you know it's just
on training camp practice, but you and I today were
watching Evan McPherson make his kicks. He has to go
from just another kicker to being a weapon again. And
I don't know that you could wait for, you know,
(01:04:00):
half of the season to come and go before you
make the determination that he's not a weapon anymore. If
he struggles.
Speaker 2 (01:04:05):
Yeah, it's not the sexy thing to talk about with football.
Evan McPherson in the offseason but you're right when you
look at what this team did or didn't do. There
were games lost because Evan McPherson's leg, and that hadn't
been the case much in the early years. I equated
to a quarterback. You know, if I'm playing quarterback and
I trust the kicker, if I get past the thirty
(01:04:27):
eight to forty yard line, I know I'm getting points.
And at the same stretch, maybe I don't need to
try to fit a ball into a tight window. You know,
maybe I don't have to take that chance on third
and eight from the thirty five because I don't trust
my kicker. I just dumped the ball off. I get
a couple of yards and then I take the points
and move on. They lost that with the confidence of
Evan McPherson last year. The way the season ended was weird.
(01:04:49):
I'm very intrigued to see what happens next for Evan McPherson.
Speaker 3 (01:04:52):
All right, we're gonna chat with you again coming up
at five forty five, Tony. I cannot wait. Great Tony Pike,

Door and Window they sell the best in service the
rest in a special thanks to Adam Weber for sponsoring
our broadcast at Bengals training camp and all his continued
(01:06:43):
support of the Bengals for all these many years. There's
something that I didn't get a chance to get to
last hour, as it relates to the Reds who continued
to ride on the hamster wheel. A win today. We've
done this all year long. They win to they lose three,
they win they we'll probably win a couple on this
homestand lose a few. Never give that far above five hundred,
(01:07:05):
Never get that far below five hundred. That is okay
for many, It's not good enough for me. It shouldn't
be good enough for you. We'll get to that coming
up in a bent plus Joe Burrow and Zach Taylor
talked today you'll hear both and one more check in
with Tony Pike on day one of Bengals training camp.
You know, we joked yesterday that you're gonna hear Zach
(01:07:25):
Taylor often talk about like, well, I'm gonna talk about
the players who are here. I'm gonna focus on the
players who are here. And look, Trey Hendrickson's absence is
a big deal. He's a great player, he's a big
part of this team. Chamar Stewart's absence is a big deal.
And added together, you'll hear a lot of talk about distractions.
What's the bigger distraction, right Trey being here, Trey not
(01:07:46):
being here, Trey being here and being unhappy, Trey being
here and holding in not getting fined, or Trey being
in Jacksonville, the Chamar Stewart thing hovering over this team?
Is it a distraction? And then when we talk about
Bengals training camp distractions, it's all about, well, what about
week one? What about week two? This team has looked
woefully unprepared the last couple of years to win early,
(01:08:09):
to get off to a good start. They're always playing
catch up, and so is that going to be the
case again this year because they're bogged down by distractions
and uncertainty. Obviously, great steps have been taken to change
the structure of the preseason, change the structure of training camp,
and the intention is to use training camp in the
(01:08:30):
preseason differently than in year's past to be better. Week one.
That goes without saying, but Day one, the most important
thing that happened is Joe Burrow was there. Now that
sounds obvious, Yeah, he's the quarterback of the team. But
like I did an interview this morning on ESPN Radio
(01:08:50):
and they wanted to talk about Trey Hendrickson and Shamar Stewart,
and I get it. Those are big stories, and I
also get where the perspective comes from. It's the Bengals.
Why do they always do this? And then the question
is asked, well, does this mean they're going to start
oh and one or oh and two again? And my
answer is I don't think so, because the main reason
(01:09:11):
they have started oh and two the last three years
and oh and three last year, the main reason Joe
Burrow wasn't himself, and there were others, like they started
oh and three last year because after losing the first game,
they lost the second and then lost the third. And
the reason they lost the third game on a night
where Joe Burrow was awesome was lou Enarumo had no
(01:09:33):
answer for Jade Daniels. Loutarumo had no answers at all
last year. Maybe he'll find them in Indianapolis. But last year,
this slow start, the main reason for them was Joe
Burrow was not himself dealing with discomfort because of an
injury that he suffered that ended his season and required
(01:09:55):
almost unprecedented surgery. I'm not making excuses, I'm spinning facts. Right.
For a while now, when the Bengals have started training camp,
there has been a thing looming over the quarterback. Last year,
it was okay, he's practicing and he's healthy, but can
he really really cut it loose? Like, do you remember
(01:10:15):
a year ago at this time what we were doing
every time Joe Burrow went into his throwing motion, picking
apart the velocity and the spin, how the ball looked
coming out of his hand. We're doing that with good
reason because he was coming off wrisk surgery, major hand surgery,
and it's been something like that since, you know, his
(01:10:38):
his second training camp. Let's go down the list, coming
off knee surgery, coming off having an appendectomy, suffering a
calf injury early in training camp, a wrist injury last
year in the first game of the season. There's lots
of reasons why they lost. Joe Burrow's play is at
the top of the list that you could maybe argue
(01:10:58):
he should still figure out a way to platter when
he's not as comfortable as or when he is as
uncomfortable as he was last year. That's fair and that's valid.
But to me, like I threw it back at the
host this morning, I'm like, yeah, look, Trey schamar track
record early in the season not good. Joe Burrow is
on the field and on day one of training camp,
we are not wondering about his appendix, his knee, his wrist,
(01:11:23):
how much weight he's lost, how much weight he's gained, Like,
we're not talking about any of that stuff. Obviously, there's
lots of time between now and September seventh, and in
a preseason where Joe is going to be on the
field more put himself more at risk, there's obviously a
greater possibility that something happens to him. You have to
acknowledge that. You can say it and still want to
(01:11:45):
see Joe play more in the preseason. But I think
that trump's all. It might not trump all in October,
might not trump all in November. Like if we've gotten
to the middle of the season and Trey Hendricks and
hasn't played a snap and Shamar Stewart is still sitting
there with his arms folded and his agent patting him
(01:12:06):
on the head telling him you're doing the right thing
by not signing, and neither have contributed to the team,
that's going to be a problem. But on day one,
Joe Burrow was there and he was practicing and looking good,
and we weren't talking about any sort of lingering physical issue.
We weren't talking about anything other than how does he
step up his game this year. He was also throwing
(01:12:27):
passes to Jamar Chase and Pike and I have talked
about this a little bit today, But Jamar Chase had
an awesome season last year. But if you remember during
training camp last season when he wasn't really doing anything
because he was holding in it's sort of thwarted, if
you will, their plan to just use training camp to
(01:12:49):
just reinvent ways to use them. Now once the game
started and we got into the heart of the season.
You saw Jamar and Chase line up in different ways,
kind of curious, like he's there game, I mean he's
you know week one, are there are there different things
they do with him during training camp that can pay
dividends once the actual games begin. We will see otherwise
(01:13:13):
largely uneventful day, no major injuries, no major news, no
Shamar Stuart, no Trey Hendrickson the Chamar Stuart thing, you know,
we've broken down the negotiations and we've discussed whether or
not the guy actually wants to play for the Bengals,
(01:13:33):
and we've wondered, at least I have how this has
a resolution that doesn't involve him caving. It's July twenty third,
and so you're being reasonable if you look at the calendar,
look at where we are, and go Schamar's got time.
They got time to come to our resolution. They've got
(01:13:53):
time to find some common ground. They the Bengals have
time to convince Shamar Stewart here's why you should sign.
And Shamar Stewart and his agent apparently have time to
tell the Bengals this is why you shouldn't do with
our contract what you want to do they have time
to do all that. What I'm kind of curious about
is how much time do they have to actually get
(01:14:16):
Shamar Stewart ready for the season. Like this, This isn't
some project that they picked. This isn't you know, Margus Hunt.
We're pulling him off the shot put track and field
stadium to get him to play football. Shamar Stewart man
like this is. This is their first round pick. This
is their first round pick whose primary function is to
(01:14:38):
get after the quarterback. And the main reason why he
was drafted beyond his physical traits and his measurables, is
Bengals pass rush sorely lacked last year. And so the
longer this goes, this is the more troubling part part
to me. It's it's, you know, you could blame the
Bengals for this if you want. You could blame Schamar
(01:14:58):
Stewart for this, if you want. The more troubling thing
to me is thinking about the first couple of games
of the season, or even thinking about the entire season,
wondering what is Shamar Stewart going to be able to
contribute this year. He didn't go through OTAs once he
was drafted. He didn't go through miniicamp. He left miniicamp early.
He was there for part of it, but not doing
(01:15:20):
his normal drills. Wasn't there today? How much longer can
Shamar Stewart go before you go, you know what, early
in the season he can't help? Or how much longer
does this Chamar Stewart thing go before you say, you
know what, his first season in the NFL is a wash,
red shirt season. We're not getting anything from him. And
(01:15:42):
if that becomes the case, can the Bengals have a
dramatically better defense when the seventeenth overall pick in the
draft who plays defense isn't capable of helping even though
he's under contract. I don't know the answer. I'm not
sure anybody right now knows the answer. But how do
(01:16:02):
you not wonder that, like we we talked about, well,
he should cave and you know, he should kind of
realize the Bengals aren't gonna just you know, fall into
his lap and cater to his position however you want
to put it in. Those things may be true. But
now that like they're on the field and they're practicing
and they're doing the part where like rookies start to
get used to life in the NFL and rookie d
(01:16:25):
ns get blocked by guys like Orlando Brown. And you know,
players are starting to work on their craft and they're
starting to, you know, learn the schemes involved. He's missing
on all that. How much more of it can he miss?
Before suddenly a guy that they were counting on to
help the team this year can't sixteen minutes after five o'clock,
(01:16:48):
uh gave you a lot there. Five point three seven
four nine fifteen thirty is our number. Eight sixty six
seven oh two three seven seven six works as well.
Phones have been quiet today, which is all right. We
got a couple of poll questions. We'll get to here
in a minute. On Twitter at Molegar thanks to United
Heartland Insurance. Check out uhis dot com. You'll hear from
(01:17:09):
Joe Burrow. You'll hear from Zach Taylor coming up in
less than twenty minutes, and Tony Pike puts a bow
and day one of training camp as well, the hamster
wheel continues, and can you can you can you convince
me that we should spend next spring training making the
same arguments many have made this year. We'll get to
that coming up in a bit. On ESPN fifteen thirty.
(01:17:31):
Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 4 (01:17:34):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic.
Speaker 5 (01:17:39):
He disabled semi blocks off the left lane northbound seventy
one to seventy five on the Brent Spence Bridge. Traffic
backed up from Kyle's lane. About a ten minute delay.
Right now westbound two seventy five. Another accident after the
double a highway. That one off onto the right shoulder
on that Ezelik with traffic.
Speaker 3 (01:17:56):
After five o'clock. This is he An fifteen thirty. We're
back tomorrow a dorn Window, Tony and Mo football show
from Bengals training camp starting at ten am. But that's tomorrow.
Let's focus on the present. Five point three fifteen thirty
is our phone number. Let's let's talk to other people
(01:18:18):
instead of me just battling. Uh Ian, go ahead, you're
on ESPN fifteen thirty. Hello Ian, how are you hey?
Speaker 11 (01:18:26):
Brother man? I know we're beating the dead horse here.
It's been said every which way in direction you can
possibly take it. But I just can't help to call
in and just say, like, I truly believe that Jamar
Stewart's agent is like really trying to save base or something,
(01:18:48):
and he's just dragging Chamar and the mug with him,
because if he doesn't time with the Bengals and goes
back into the draft, there's a huge chance that teams
are not gonna want to take him in the first
round the risk factor and everything else. But the funniest
(01:19:08):
thing to me is that if he goes back into
the draft and with another team, he's gonna have to
seem contract essentially right. I mean, it's not gonna be
much different unless the only hang up is that he
wants like the more like upfront money for this shit.
(01:19:29):
That's the only thing that I can think of that
he can have any hang on. It's it's completely ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (01:19:35):
Well well, and I would find it hard to believe
that he goes as high as the seventeenth overall pick
if he doesn't play football this year.
Speaker 11 (01:19:43):
Yeah, dude, it's this is like his the definition of
like really like caveman gene of like just the beer embarrassment,
just digging your heels in just to do it. I
think that this guy's really being taken advantage of by
this agent. I mean, I don't know where else it
(01:20:04):
could really be. And then with my mind being so
distraught with Prey. I'm banking on that Joe burrows in
contact with them and that makes me feel good. And
then number two, him saying he wants to be in
the captain. I know you're crapping all over it, but
(01:20:25):
it makes me feel like he's gonna he's gonna sign,
you know what I mean, Like, but he says weird things.
It just makes it feel like it's gonna happen. What man,
is it painstaking?
Speaker 3 (01:20:36):
It is? It is? And I mean, you know, yeah,
he said he wanted to be a captain, but he also,
you know, kind of dumped all over the most recent
offers that he has gotten. I mean, you know, the
one piece of herbage from Anti Tail was atrociously low. Like,
I know, there's been some optimism that people have felt
his training camp has gotten closer. Mike Brown, I think
(01:20:57):
kind of went out of his way to make people
feel better about the Try Hendrickson thing. But I don't know.
I mean, to me, if the two sides are close,
if you're close to getting something done, if you're close
to signing a contract, do you drive eight hundred miles
away from the city that you live in. I mean, yeah,
you could jump back on a plane, and it could
be on the field tomorrow and all is all is good.
(01:21:20):
I feel like most of us are bracing for this
to have a resolution close to the end of training camp,
and that will not be unlike many of the other
contract situations that have been resolved right at the end
of training camp and right when the season begins. You know,
not that the Joe Burrow thing was contentious, but he
signs his contract extension the night that the NFL season
(01:21:42):
begins a couple of years ago. The Jamar Chase thing
didn't have a complete resolution by the end of training
camp last year, but it went until the very last
hour determining whether or not he was gonna play. Joe
Mixon's the deal took a while. The Jesse Bates thing
didn't have a positive resolution but lasted all throughout camp.
I just it feels like this is gonna be another
(01:22:04):
one of those, and it's gonna come at quite a
cost financially to Trey Hendrickson, which is another reason that
if I were try I'd want a resolution as quickly
as possible because I don't want to get fined.
Speaker 11 (01:22:16):
I got one last point. It's not gonna take long, sure, okay,
similar to Andrew Whitt, whereas he was much older. But
I feel like Trey is that type of body type
man where they need to, like and they don't have
any other options, they really need to just like push
this over the edge. I think that he does have
(01:22:38):
a few more years and just get it done. Like
the key point here is Brian Arrow with Joe Burrow.
You're wasting it and on a on a hope and
on a whim about Miles Murphy and whoever else. If
it happens again where he's throwing for all those yards
and the defense gives up that many point, dude, I'm
(01:23:00):
gonna lose my fine.
Speaker 3 (01:23:03):
It would be more Ian, thank you very much. It
would be more organizational malpractice. It it can't happen. I
you know, we had Kelsey Conway on with this last Friday,
and I'm paraphrasing her, but she made the point like
had the Bengals original offer to Trey been higher, then
there's a decent chance that this would already be done.
(01:23:26):
And I can't I can't help but wonder I can't
help it. Wonder like what does what does this whole
thing look like as it relates to Trey if the
original offer to him was higher than it than it was? Like,
what if instead of starting from well, the most recently
reported concrete number not even concrete, but the most recently
(01:23:48):
reported number was twenty eight mil, what if the most
recently reported number is thirty You know, then what is
how does the he react to the most recent offer
that he has been given? And I know there's guarantee
in contract length and more than just the actual money involved,
But you know, I think most of us just sort
of strug our shoulders and go, Trey Hendrickson's gonna play
(01:24:10):
football for the Bengals this year, uh, Shamar Stewart, Man,
I still guess he's gonna play football for the Bengals
this year. The difference is when Trey shows up, I
think most of us know, like, well, here's what he
can do. Chamar Stewart, I have no idea. Trey Hendrickson
might be behind, but probably will be able to get
caught up pretty quickly, Shamar Stewart. For a dude who's
(01:24:32):
never played in the NFL before, I can't assume he's
gonna get caught up. Twenty nine after five o'clock five one, three, seven,
four nine, fifteen thirty. Joe Burrow talked today, Zach Taylor
talked today. You'll hear from both, and just a quick
thought on Will Benson on ESPN fifteen thirty. Cincinnati Sports

Com Bengals Day one of training camp in the books
Nobody Got Hurt Day to us Tomorrow. Practice is open
(01:25:34):
to the public ten am it starts. We will have
the AE Door and Window Tony Inmo Training Camp show
on ESPN fifteen thirty right when practice begins at ten
o'clock tomorrow morning. Meanwhile, Red's on getaway toy avoid getting swept.
Beat the Nationals today in Washington. Five zip nic Lodolo
his first ever complete game shutout. He was awesome today
(01:25:55):
and very efficient through one hundred and five pitches. Four heads,
do not walk anybody, but he's truck out eight. Danced
around a very shaky Washington lineup Cincinnati, scoring on a
Jake Frayley single in the fourth, and then played add
on baseball with two in the eighth and two in
the ninth. Reds are home Friday Night off tomorrow, raised
in Town, first of a three game set against Tampa
(01:26:18):
Bay Hunter Green. We'll start a rehab assignment with the
Arizona Complex League team. Florence y All's beat Lake Erie
today by a score of eleven to nine, and Evander
has been named an MLS All Star Team captain. The
MLS All Star Game is tonight in Austin. There you
go quickly here on the rads and then we're gonna
hear Zach Taylor and Joe Burrow. We've talked about Nick Lodolo. Today,
(01:26:43):
Will Benson was robbed of a home run. He's had
a rough week because he's he's barely played. Here in
the outset of the second half of the season, he
was he was robbed of a home run by Alex
Call and it's like, you know, the guy has barely played.
When he gets an opportunity, he hits one that should
(01:27:05):
leave the ballpark, and guy makes a great catch. He
starts for the first time here in the second half,
and he went over four many and I think this
has been an online thing more than anything else. Have
wondered like, why is Will Benson in the doghouse? Terry
Francona not like him? Is he mad about you know,
kind of dogging it on that home run that he
(01:27:25):
watched out of the box in the Colorado Series that
was actually not a home run? What is it about
Will Benson? And I, you know, Will Benson, I think
is a very easy guy to root for. And you know,
on the list of all the guys that joined the
team in twenty twenty three, maybe beyond Delie de la Cruz,
Will Benson is the guy that I gravitated toward. But
(01:27:46):
let's let's be honest about Will Benson. While there are
metrics that would suggest that the sort of baseline stats
you see from Will Benson, aren't realive of how well
he's hit the ball. Basically, he's like today, very unlucky
guy robs him of a home run. So there's a
lot of metrics out there that suggest the dude is unlucky.
(01:28:10):
He's hitting the ball better than the batting average would indicate,
or that the slugging percentage would indicate, And there's validity
to that. Last year, the guy was an absolute strikeout machine,
one hundred and fifty four strikeouts in less than three
hundred and fifty at bats. Awful against lefties, really, last year,
awful against everybody. Had that awesome stretch in May where
(01:28:33):
he was the National League Player of the Week. Will
Benson is not starting in right field for a really
good team. He's not getting one hundred and thirty five
starts anywhere for a really good team. So is there
a part of me that understands why some want to
see Will not be buried on the bench. Sure, but
(01:28:55):
how about next year we spend less time obsessing over
who should get playing time out of a mess of
players that includes Will Benson, Jake Fraley. Jake Freeley's gotten
off to a decent start of the second haven't had
a big hit today, Will Benson, Jake Frayley, Conner Joe, etc.
How about this offseason, whether it's go get or find
(01:29:19):
somebody who is an established right fielder, if that's gonna
be Noel j Marte and Sal Stewart's gonna play third
base next season this time of year, like, we've got
to do it now unless they go and get a
right fielder, or unless they go and get a third
basement and make Noelve Marte the right fielder. You're sifting
through Will Benson, who was awful last year, started the
(01:29:40):
season at triple A basic numbers. Aren't that good? Likable
guy but not that great? Jake Frayley by now we
know what he is. Conner Joe's on the team this year.
His Stinton Cincinnati has so far been very forgettable. Has
cool hair also had hand, foot and mouth disease. They've
tried Noel j Marte, who has never played right field.
You are basically identifying what your biggest weakness is and
(01:30:04):
thus what your biggest off season priority should be when
you're sifting through a whole bunch of very shaky possibilities
this offseason. Get a right fielder, so we're not wondering
why should they give more time to Will Benson. Thank you.
Now let's hear from Zach Taylor and Joe Burrow, both
(01:30:26):
talked today. By the way, I know this might not
matter to you, but as a radio guy, it matters
to me. Today the Bengals had two press conferences, Joe
Burrow and Zach Taylor in their new media room. And
in their new media room, you could hear the questions
being asked by the reporters. It was awesome. Here is
the head coach of the Bengals being asked what will
(01:30:48):
be different about this year's training camp.
Speaker 12 (01:30:51):
I just think it's We've got a whole new defensive
staff right now for the most part, and so just
how we practice will be a little bit different. Pre
practice will be a little different. As we compete will
be a little bit different, and I'm just excited to
see how it all turned out for us.
Speaker 3 (01:31:05):
There you go, short and sweet, Zach Taylor on how
camp is going to be different. Now here's the head
coach of the Bengals on why the absences of Trey
Hendrickson and Shamar Stewart will not be a distraction to
his team.
Speaker 12 (01:31:16):
I think that's just in here. You know, it's a
lot of conversation. Is an easy topic to hit for
you all. It's newsworthy, certainly, but the guys that have
been in the locker room, they just want to go
take care of business, and so it does not come
up for us. But I understand in these setting it's
going to come up, but it has been nothing for us.
Speaker 3 (01:31:34):
With somebody typing furiously as Zach Taylor talked, all right,
one more, one more, head coach of the Bengals, on
the benefits of practicing in the morning, which is kind
of new this year, but.
Speaker 12 (01:31:45):
It's certainly cooler, and that's only helpful in terms of
the injuries and able to get more out of your players.
We will transition, you know, as we get closer to
the first game season, because we do play at one
o'clock in the heat, transitioning back to our afternoon practice
we'll get to once the season starts, So we'll incorporate that,
you know, a little bit before that any game. I
think it's the first time we do that in our
(01:32:06):
third preseason game, but.
Speaker 11 (01:32:08):
It certainly is.
Speaker 12 (01:32:08):
I mean it just like the temperature I think last
year was eighty eight on the first day at two fifteen,
and the day before is ninety one at two fifteen,
and the day before at seventy seven at two fifteen,
and so today at ten twenty, by my calculation, is
going to be seventy seven degrees, which is pretty nice, cooler,
maybe a little overcast, and so you do get more
even even if they've done the same amount the day before.
(01:32:29):
There is more output you can get from these guys
because you know it's a little bit cooler, and so
you maybe have a little sharper practice. Again, I'm mindful
we're gonna play our games in the afternoon, and so
we got to get used to the heat at some point,
and we will as training camp moves on.
Speaker 3 (01:32:43):
All right. Joe Burrow also talked today. Obviously one of
the themes of training camp is going to be that
you know, more of the players who matter most will
play in the preseason, and we'll play more in the preseason,
and no player matters more than Joe Burrow, the quarterback,
talked today about uh, knowing that he is going to
be playing more in preseason games.
Speaker 13 (01:33:03):
Yeah, I'm excited to have a chance to get better
and those are valuable reps that we haven't had in
the past for for good reasons. But I think I
think we're making the right decision this year, and I
think that's gonna benefit us in the long run. Why
are you so much all right?
Speaker 3 (01:33:20):
What do you got here? Trey Hendrickson? Trey Hendrickson's not
talking today, and Diana Rossini might call him, might be
on the Pat mcaf he showed tomorrow. But Joe was asked,
with Trey and Jacksonville nowhere close to his teammates, has
he spoken to him since he left town?
Speaker 13 (01:33:34):
Yeah, I mean treyor are going to constant contact?
Speaker 3 (01:33:40):
And here's Joe explaining that he has not mad at
any player or any teammate for conducting business how they
see fit.
Speaker 2 (01:33:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (01:33:47):
We you know, nobody's ever gonna fault a player for
doing business how he feels he he needs to. It's
it's cut through business. It's uh, you gotta fight for
everything you can get. That's how it goes.
Speaker 3 (01:34:08):
There you go, there's a Joe Burrow earlier today also
expressed frustration with the performance of the offense, saying the
defense won. Maybe to find a keyboard warrior. Yeah, somebody
going to town on that keyboard now. We gotta find
out who that is. Somebody just you know, rip it.
I'm sure on Twitter like tweeting everything that Joe is saying.
Somebody just going nuts on that keyboard.
Speaker 10 (01:34:30):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:34:30):
Tony Pike will join us next on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 4 (01:34:33):

Brook You by Skyline, Julie feeling good. It's Skyline time
on your official home of the Cincinnati Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:35:18):
Tony Pike one more time today as the Bengals finish
up Day one of training camp. Day one relatively uneventful
from the standpoint of nobody got hurt, which is a
good thing. I think this is a camp that feels
largely uneventful as it relates to jobs being opened, both
starting jobs and even roster spots. Where is the competition,
(01:35:40):
Tony is Bengals training camp gets underway.
Speaker 2 (01:35:44):
I think figuring out what the depth of the running
back is. I think the guard position on offense is
the easy one, and I think figuring out who you're
relying on in the secondary consistently is the three biggest
needs for this team. I think the defensive line works
itself out. I think linebacker plays itself out, getting actual
battles in the secondary at guard, and figuring out who
the running back after Chase Brown is going to be
(01:36:06):
and how those reps are divvied up. So I think
those are the competitions. But you already you mentioned the
word competition though. One of the things I enjoyed most
looking back on day one, Joe Burrow post practice was
mad because he said the defense one. I mean, we're
talking about day one of training camp. The training wheels
are still on, and the quarterback of the team, the
franchise of the team, is not joking around much. In
(01:36:30):
the interview. He's upset because the offense didn't didn't need
to do or didn't do what they needed to do
in day one. I love the tone that Joe Burrow
is setting already with this team. We talked about a
school compliment of weapons, but I think just from a
you mentioned competition offense versus defense today, I thought that
competition and the way Joe Burrow responded was fantastic.
Speaker 3 (01:36:49):
Yeah, and you know that the Joe Burrow tone was
to me, he picked up where he left off last year.
One of the things about last season that I think
of when I think of how it went was the
angering Joe Burrow in media sessions on the sideline, a
guy who I think was very intentionally sending the message
this isn't good enough, We're not good enough. If that
(01:37:10):
carries forth until this team starts to deliver markedly better results,
I'm okay with it.
Speaker 2 (01:37:15):
Yeah, And I think for Joe there's a spot too.
What have we done all offseason?
Speaker 3 (01:37:18):
Though?
Speaker 2 (01:37:19):
We have done nothing but praise the wide receivers and
the quarterbacks and the skilled players of the offense. It's
it's it's that you can listen to that if you're
a player too. And I think there's a point of
Joe here saying, hey, enough, listening to the praises we
got work to do, and I do think they're sewing
a lot out there. I think they're putting a lot
on his plate on purpose. But you know this isn't hey,
let's let's read the press clipping. This is we got
(01:37:39):
a lot of work to do as an offense, and
already day one, I think Joe Burrow setting the tone
of we weren't good enough today, We've got to be better.
Speaker 3 (01:37:46):
Tomorrow's training camp and joining us on the Ray Saint
Clair Roofing Hotline. We are back for the AE Door
and Window Tony and Mode training show on ESPN fifteen
thirty starts at ten am. I want to thank a
Door and Window as well as five one three five
(01:38:07):
one three Toph also our friends at Oakley Greens and
tomorrow at ten am as we have been all day
today broadcasting from the Airport Paint and Body Broadcast area,
and again Tony joining us like all of our guests
on the Ray Saint Clair Roofing Hotline eight away from
six o'clock. I'm trying to figure out here we have
(01:38:30):
like four minutes to go. I just watched a clip
from The Herd with Colin Cowherd and He has regular
conversations with Nick Wright, who's an FS one personality and
I think really good at what he does. Nick Wright
was speculating that if things go sideways in Cincinnati this year,
that Nick Saban would be would be a good fit
(01:38:51):
for the Bengals at at age seventy three, and I'm
trying to determine what makes less sense to entertain that
possible ability, or as I was texted today by someone, Hey, uh,
Elon Musk wants to buy the Bengals. I don't know.
I don't know which of those two scenarios I have
less energy to devote, but they're both out there. I
(01:39:14):
think that the Nick Right and Nick Saban thing that
was from yesterday's heard with Colin Cowherd. I don't know
where Elon Musk buying the Bengals came from. I maybe
that's out there, you know, there's I'm on Twitter, and
I'm on it a lot. I don't spend a lot
of time going and doing deep dives into conspiracy lands,
(01:39:35):
so I don't. But but both those are out there,
and I thought that I would acknowledge them, and I
don't have a lot of time to play the audio
of Nick Wright speculating that Nick Saban would be interesting
in Cincinnati. What I do have time to do is
tell you that we have a couple of poll questions
on Twitter at Moegger and our poll questions are as
always a service of United Heartland Insurance. Make sure you
(01:39:55):
check out U hi ns dot come. Don't just check
it out go there. Think about what you are spending
on your insurance, home, car, vote, whatever, business, commercial, fleet.
Think about what you're paying and then think like, could
I pay less? Could I reach out to United Heartland Insurance?
Should I check out uhins dot com? I should? Poll
(01:40:16):
question number one this has split almost fifty to fifty.
Would you vote Trey Hendrickson to be a Bengals team captain?
Which is something he has a stated desire to be.
Right now, the very slim majority says no, fifty one
and a half percent. Your best players are often your captains.
But Trey wants to be a captain. I think he
(01:40:39):
has a weird way of showing it, and if I'm
one of his teammates, I don't necessarily have an issue
with what he is doing. And you know his attempts
to get the absolute top dollar for what he's worth.
But the dude who has been shopping himself and hasn't
been here and kind of made his grand standing at
(01:41:01):
mini campball about himself, that's an interesting fit to be
a team captain this one. We're I'm encouraged by this
because I thought the results would actually be kind of
the opposite. Would you vote for me to be an
ESPN fifteen thirty team captain? And uh sixty eight point
eight percent of you say yes, So that's kind of nice.
(01:41:22):
And be a team captain with only three of you
four you're on the staff for us. You know, I
can empathize with that. But but you know, I mean,
you know, the Bengals had like fifteen percent of their
players or team captains last year, so we could have
two co captain anyway. Vote now at Mulegger again thanks
(01:41:44):
to United Heartland Insurance. Today has been fun and tomorrow
will be as well again. Ten am a. E. Dorn Window,
Tony and Mo Football Show from Bengals training camp. We're
bumping Clinton and company out of the and that's you know,
nothing against Clinton Yates and his show. We really like it.
But we have a chance to be on with the
(01:42:06):
Bengals of practicing we're gonna take that chance, take that opportunity.
And so there you go. That's ten to noon tomorrow
since he three sixty at noon. We are back tomorrow
at three five. Anything you might have missed go listen
to on the iHeartRadio app podcast of this show, our
service of long next sports Grill. We're done. Thanks to A.
(01:42:28):
Taran Bland for producing, and thanks to you for listening.
Have the greatest night of your life, and we're back
tomorrow morning. We'll talk to you then. This is ESPN
