Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, Tony one more time. Bengals training camp report.

(00:03):
I want to spend some time talking about something that
you pointed out to me during practice today, especially for
those who didn't hear it. The Bengals were doing some
seven on seventeam drill sort of stuff, and the tempo
was pretty fast, and you pointed out to me where
Al Golden was standing and what he was doing during
these workouts. Can you either repeat that or elaborate it
on it for me?

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Yeah, Al Golden was about thirty to forty yards away
from where the defense was during these team drills and
you might not think anything of it. He's on a
walkie talkie and he is essentially calling in the play too.
I'm assuming at this point Logan Wilson, I'm guessing that
to that that voice is going to be for the
Cincinnati Bengals. But the reason you're doing this you don't

(00:47):
want to have to coach after every single play on
something that's good and something that's bad. That used to
be a way to do it, and practices would last
for three hours and it would just stop the flow
of practice. In today's tempo is king and being able
to line up fast offensively sometimes put you in an
advantage because the defense isn't ready. So while it's one

(01:09):
thing to do to make sure you're ready and you're
getting lined up, what I think is more important is
the value that it creates and understanding that you're going
to have good plays, You're going to have bad plays
regardless of what happens. You better be able to line
up next, get that out of your mind and make
the next play. And when you go into a situation
where something happens at practice and you stop practice and

(01:29):
you try to teach it up, that doesn't help because
when you get into a game on Sundays and the
other team gashes you for a thirty five yard completion,
guess what you can't do. Go out on the field,
coach it up and move to the next play. Get
everything done during practice, move with urgency, and then go
into the film room and study what you did right
or what you did wrong, and then be better out

(01:51):
at the next day. You can't hold guys hands in
the NFL. You got to move to the next play.
And I think standing from a distance for Al Golden
and getting those plays, and it is trying to instill
a little bit of that into this defense right now.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
You know, we can make sometimes a little bit too
much of you know, offense ahead of the defense. That
sort of thing. Defense wins day one by all accounts,
offense steps up wins day two. What I'm interested in
is whether this unit tomorrow defensively can do what it
couldn't do last year and bounce back.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah, and again, we talk all the time of you know,
what's the ceiling for the offense, what's the ceiling for
the defense. I don't think anyone's asking the defense to
be top ten, So that's not going to be a
situation where the defense is going to get, you know,
five stops in the first half, give the ball back
to the offense. But what this defense couldn't do last

(02:41):
year was get one stop or two stops when things
started to go the wrong direction it's snowballed. How many
games last year did we say, man, just get the
ball back to the offense. I know against Baltimore that
was the case. I know against Washington that was the case,
and the defense never could do that. So that's where
I stand on it. I want to see, yes, can
the defense bounce back yesterday? But guess what they're going

(03:03):
against one of, if not the best offenses in football,
so you're gonna lose more than you win in practice.
But you're also not gonna see many better offenses during
the season that you're seeing right now. Understand that bounce back,
and don't let one bad practice, one bad rep, one
bad day creep into another bad rep, another bad practice,
or another bad day for the defense.
