Tony Pike is gonna join us at three forty five.
Phil Steele, our guy in fifteen minutes previewing the college
football season. I'll say this I ordered a few weeks ago,
(00:51):
Phil Steele's annual college football preview. It's my favorite summertime read.
He is a little bit more bullish on the bearca
than most.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
He doesn't have him winning the Big Twelve or making
the playoff or anything like that, but I think he's
a little bit more optimistic than even your average Bearcat fan.
That is coming up in just about fifteen minutes. Entire
show preview is available on Twitter at moeger and our
show previews come your way thanks to Emory Federal Credit Union,
(01:23):
your credit union with heart since nineteen thirty nine. Go
to EMORYFCU dot org. And by the way, three weeks
from Monday is I think Cincinnati's premier golf event, the
Emory Federal Credit Union Golf Tournament at Ford Bridges Country Club,

(01:44):
go to EMORYFCU dot org. The Bengals news of the day.
And I don't know how serious or non serious this is,
but it's it's worth keeping in the back of your mind.
There are gonna be dings and are going to be dense,
and they're gonna be other words that begin with the
letter D throughout training camp, and guys are gonna get hurt,
(02:05):
and they're gonna pull up lame and they're gonna be
dealing with aches and pains. And what you're simply hoping
for is the Bengals can get through the rest of
this month and all of August. In the first few
days of September, in relatively good health. But the first
I think injury of note today and again it might
not be a big deal. Lucas Patrick came off the
field today suffered an apparent leg injury. He limped off
(02:28):
the field on his own power, headed to the locker room.
They didn't put him on a cart, and so we
will see. Obviously, Patrick signed is a free agent. He
has been thrown into the mix at guard. We will see.
This is worth paying attention to for a few different reasons.
He was Mainly he was the guy in free agency.
(02:48):
Like when the off season ended, I felt like the
consensus was the Bengals need multiple experienced guards and then
you draft some, but they need more than one guy
from another team. And then if you want, you know,
somebody in the draft, well that makes sense too, right,
And so they drafted a guard in Dylan Fairchild, and
(03:11):
they drafted him with the idea he was going to start.
But the only free agent guard they signed was Lucas Patrick.
And so if there's any kind of health issue with him,
then the guy they prioritized in free agency has an issue. Now,
maybe it's again, maybe it's an issue that hasn't missed
a couple of practices maybe he's back in the practice
field on Sunday. The Bengals are off tomorrow. Who knows.
(03:35):
But we talked extensively on this show yesterday about the
possibility of the Bengals signing Noah Fant, who came in
for a free agent visit. He's off to go meet
with the Saints, Tony said to me today on the
Tony and Moe Training Camp Show, which is available on
the iHeartRadio app. Look, if you're going with the Saints,
if you're gonna sign with the Saints, you're going there
because of money and guarantees, and maybe it's a long
(03:55):
term deal the Saints versus the Bengals. From the perspective
of Noah Fant, you know, being.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Able to.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
I don't know, prove that he could still play. I
guess because the Seahawks just cut him. Is a better
chance of that happening here catching passes from Joe Burrow.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
We will see.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
And many instantly met that news that the Bengals were
bringing in Noah Fan and said, well, yeah, but he
doesn't play guard. They need a guard. And I know
Brandon Shearf is still out there. Brandon Sharff is thirty
three years old. And he is still out there. You
could wonder why the Bengals haven't made overtures toward him.
You can also wonder why is he still out there,
And chances are his age has something to do with that.
(04:32):
But I do think that when as training camp unfolds,
and especially when we get to cut down day, we're
all gonna be looking at guard, and we're gonna be
looking at other positions as well, but we're gonna be
looking at guard to see if somebody there makes sense,
and maybe that need becomes a little bit more pressing
if this Lucas Patrick thing ends up being kind of serious.
(04:55):
Reds are back in action tonight. They have six games
between now and the trade deadline. Baseball teams are making trades.
Josh Naylor the Diamondbacks may be signaling that the fire
sale is about to begin. Josh Naylor traded to the
Seattle Mariners, a team that has been connected to Euhaneo Suarez.
(05:16):
The New York Yankees, maybe more than anybody else, have
been connected to Euhaneo Suarez. They have acquired Ryan McMahon,
a guy who strikes out a ton. I think he
leads a league in strikeouts hits twenty home runs every
single year. Coursefield might have something to do with that.
Is a very good defensive third baseman is a left
handed batter. I think if you're looking at the edge,
(05:40):
you're kind of more interested in right handed hitters who
can help against lefties. But still so, there's a few
things about this one. Does this mean the Yankees are
out on Euhaneo Suarez? It's worth mentioning. Obviously, Auhaneo is
older and has an expiring contract. McMahon has two more
years left on his deal, I think at thirty two
over the course of the next two seasons. So you're
(06:01):
trading for a guy, you get team control. He can
be your third basement or at least be a part
of your team now for a while. You trade for
Suarez not so much. But does this mean they're out
on a Euhaneosuarez? Does this mean that a Euganeosuarez is
completely off the table. There's a report from the Great
Buster Oldi of ESPN dot com, who writes the Diamondbacks
(06:22):
informed other teams in the past they would quote probably
be sellers. But even after trading Josh Naylor to Seattle,
it's unclear how far Arizona will go. If the d
Backs decided to go all in on selling, they could
reshape their organizations significantly by moving free agents to be Merrill, Kelly,
Zach Gallen, Lordis Guriel and of course a Euheneosuarez. The
perception of other front offices is that the Diamondbacks and
(06:44):
Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick does not want to sell, especially
with the Dodgers drifting back toward the pack of the
National League West, and as of Thursday and night, Suarez
wasn't even officially on the market. He continues, what some
rot ivil evaluators believe is that at the d Back
cell it'll be because of a nudge from the front office.
(07:06):
There's another one here from John Hayman of e of
CBS Sports, who writes a euhaneos Warez is the crown
jewel of this trade market. But sources say Arizona, which
is in cell mode, is asking for a ton a
ton in quotes for the slugger, and if that price
isn't met, the Diamondbacks might hold him and try to
re sign him in the offseason. This also from John Hayman,
(07:29):
who mentions the Phillies has a potential fit now that
Alec Baum is out. The Yankees, Mariners, Cubs, Astros, Tigers,
Brewers all also fits. That was sent today, I think
this morning, before the Ryan McMahon came out. So a
few things about this number one, if the Diamondbacks are
in cell mode, if I was running the Arizona Diamondbacks,
(07:51):
that I'm trading a Euheneosarez. First of all, I don't
discount that, Like if my team wins five to the
next six, you know we're right there where the Reds
are at number two. If au Haanio Suarez is the
the number one guy, the number one most likely trade candidate,
dude who's on a pace to hit over fifty home
runs this year, I am obviously drawing this out to
(08:13):
the last minute to create the best bidding war I
possibly can.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
And so there's that.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
There's also, of course, they should be asking for a
ton like he's the number one guys having a great year,
he's an All star, got thirty six bombs, on pace
to hit fifty. But it's we're gonna see, here's here's
my question. Five point three seven fifteen thirty. Of course
the red should be interested in a Johaneo Suarez, and
(08:45):
of course the red should be interested in other players
as well. And you're allowed to make trades now, I mean,
you don't have to wait until just before the deadline
on July thirty first. What are so many Reds fans
afraid of? Maybe not you, and maybe I am misreading this.
(09:14):
We all want our teams to have good farm systems.
We all want the Reds to have as many good
young players as possible. We want the Reds to be
like the Cardinals have been for years. Was just this
constant pipeline of guys who are ready to get to
the big leagues and help out immediately. But I almost
feel like there are some of us who are addicted
to prospects. I asked a poll question on Twitter, admittedly
(09:38):
not the most scientific scientific outlet to use to gauge
public opinion, and it was about trading for a Uhaneo Suarez.
And I understand every team has prospects that they might
pull off the table and make unavailable. But I asked yesterday,
do you want the Reds to jump to the front
of the line, beat everyone to the punch and trade
(10:00):
for a Uhaneo Suarez. Thirty percent of you said no,
and the way I put the two answers was a yes,
B no because of prospects or something thirty percent. Now
it's not the majority, obviously, thirty percent. No, don't trade
for a guy who might hit fifty home runs this season?
(10:23):
Why are we addicted to prospects that that doesn't read?
Why are we?
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Why do we value prospects? I value prospects. I really
believe there are those among us who care deeply about
the fortunes of this franchise who when we talk about trades,
they either are deathly afraid to watch a guy who's
under Red's control succeed elsewhere, or they feel like the
(10:54):
entire trajectory of what the Reds are trying to do
is going to be thrown off because of one trade.
And look, there, are you any Asuarez specifically is going
to cost a lot if there are two games out
of the Wildcard on deadline day, I'm willing to give
up a lot for a guy like that. I'm also
certainly hopeful that Nick Krawl explores other possibilities, and maybe
(11:16):
there's one that makes more sense. But I almost feel
like I have to stage an intervention for those among
us who care deeply about the Reds, who are almost
addicted to prospects. More on that a little bit later on.
Taylor Twelman is going to be on the show in
the four o'clock hour. Messi's not going to play tomorrow
(11:38):
night from Miami against f C Cincinnati because he skipped
the All Star Game. That is the dumbest rule of
all time, because all it does is punish fans, but.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
Perhaps an advantage for the Orange and Blue.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
Let's face it, Messi didn't exactly play great when Miami
played f C Cincinnati. Here, Taylor Twelman's on the call
for MLS. He's in passing Apple TV. He'll join us
at four thirty three, and the iconic ice Cube is
going to join us. Hip hop icon, entertainment icon. Let's
go ahead and say basketball icon, the founder of the
(12:08):
Big Three. He's in town. The Big Three is happening
tomorrow night or tomorrow afternoon at the Heritage Bank Center.
Ice Cube is going to join us in studio at
five thirty five. But first Phil Steele previews the college

Speaker 3 (13:04):
Twenty minutes on the Eray Saint Clair Roofing Hotline ESPN
fifteen thirty more Eggar. Let's go to the Ray Saint
Clair Roofing Hotline. Phil Steele is with us. Our annual
conversation is twenty twenty five. College football preview is a must.
You could order it now at Phil Steel dot com.
There's no more comprehensive or thorough publication. We always talk
about the labor of love and how much time and
(13:25):
effort you put into this. How much more difficult is
it in this era of college football that we're in.
Speaker 7 (13:32):
Yeah, a lot more difficult with that second portal thrown
in post spring. You know, in years past, maybe five
six years ago, MO I could talk to the coaches
after spring practice was over, and some team spring ends
in March, so I could start the coaches interviews in
March after they go through their post spring interviews with
their players. Now I have to wait till the second
(13:53):
portal closes, which is actually at the end of April,
and that means I'm trying to talk to all one
hundred and thirty six head coaches. I think this year
I got about one hundred and twenty six in, but
I have to there. Each call takes about the hour
hour plus on these calls, and I'm trying to cram
them all in. In the month of May, I actually
took about twelve conversations, you know. Generally the final week
(14:15):
of the magazine, I'm not doing any coaches calls. I'm
just fine tuning the magazine. This year, I talked to
like twelve coaches the final week, just because we couldn't
squeeze them all in in May, and it made a
very hectic down the stretch. So a lot of changes.
But The one thing we do do is, you know,
we wait five weeks after the transfer portals closed, so
all our players are on the correct teams, unlike those
(14:36):
other magazines that are on the shelf while the portal's
still open.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
And by the way, you could order Phil's publication at
Phil steel dot com.
Speaker 4 (14:44):
Steele has an e at the end of it. You
can get the digital edition. Order it now.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
You'll have it well before this conversation comes to an end.
I always start with the Bearcats, and you know around
here fans ask each other, Okay, are they going to
be better to see this season? Can they make a
ball game? Can can they cool off Scott Saderfield seat?
And for most of us the answer is, man, I
don't know. There are so many additions, so many new guys.
The season lasted ended so poorly last year. So I
(15:10):
was really encouraged when I went to the UC page
and I saw you wrote quote, they will surprise a
lot of folks this year. You have them number eight
and you're most improved. Indecks, Phil, talk to me, you're
getting me excited.
Speaker 8 (15:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (15:25):
I was very bullish on the Cincinnati after I got
full with coach Sadderfield and the first two conversations, you know,
he had inexperienced units. He his first year head coach's
first year and had a very young team, only eight
returning starters. Even last year they're only number one hundred
and twelve on my experience chart. And as you mentioned,
(15:45):
they got off to a great start. You know, they
were five and two and it looked like a Bowl
game for sure, but then losing the last five games hurt.
But this year they go for number one hundred and
twelve on my experienced chart all the way up to
number twenty six. And unlike those first two teams, they're
not relying solely on transfers. I mean, Soresby's back at
QB and I think he's one of the better quarterbacks
(16:06):
in the Big twelve. You look at the running back corps,
you know, Evan Pryor is back, and they add in
a Tywee Walker coming in from Wisconsin.
Speaker 6 (16:13):
I love this unit.
Speaker 7 (16:14):
And then the receivers. Jeff Caldwell's an NFL caliber dude
coming in from Linderwood. And here's the thing. When going
through the teams with the coaches, there's actually a much
higher hit. In other words, players that come in into
transfer portal that actually play when they come up from
the FCS level if they have the experience, because they're
happy to be there, they love the training table, and
(16:37):
they also they're underrated and they've got a chip on
their shoulder, and so I think you're going to see
Caldwell shine this year, coming in from Linderwood, one of
the top tight ends in the country, and Joe Royer.
They finally have experience on the offensive line, in fact,
coach centerfield fields. They could be one of the best
offensive lines in the Big Twelve this year. Defensively, Dante
Corleone was a question mark coming into last year to
(17:00):
return this year just to get his NFL draft stock
boosted back up. I think he's going to have a
dominant year on the d line along with Jalen Hurt
and Called Golday, and the whole defense is solidly veteran.
The one unit where they did rely on transfers was
the secondary, bringing in McDoom, Barnes and Williams and also Harrison.
But overall, this is a vastly more experienced team than
(17:21):
last year and they are my number eight most improved team,
and I don't put teams on my most improved list lightly.
I expect them all to go from losing records to
Bowl games.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
Yeah, I you know, I think they're going to benefit
from continuity. You know, a new defensive coordinator last year,
some growing pains. I am interested in how much better
their's special teams unit's going to be this year because
last year it cost him some games. The Big Twelve
top to bottom, how good is it?
Speaker 7 (17:49):
It's definitely a competitive conference, so that patch ball. I mean,
as I have to do is look at last year.
I've been doing the magazine for thirty one years. Have
you I've never seen it? Have you mall a conference?
And so it was top to bottom like last year was.
Speaker 4 (18:02):
With the Big Twelve, No, nothing like it.
Speaker 7 (18:04):
And I think this year, though, we're going to see
a little more stability. I do think there are some
teams at the top of the conference that all have
a shot at winning it. And you could probably get
all the way down to Cincinnati if you're looking for
a surprise, even with Kansas, even Houston. I mean, this
is a loaded and deep conference. Now what that's going
to do for the Big Twelve mall, it's probably going
(18:26):
to make sure they only have one spot in the
playoffs this year, because how the heck are you going
to get two teams here with double digit wins when
you've got a huge game almost every single week in
Big twelve play And the names of the teams that
I consider capable of being up there, you know, Baylor, Utah,
Iowa State, Arizona State, Kansas State, Texas Tech, TCU, b YU.
(18:48):
I'm throwing Cincinnati up there, and throwing Kansas up there,
even Houston, which had a great defense. All those teams
I think are capable of contending in one way or another.
So I think it's a wide open race in the
Big two twelve, but a little more stability. I think
when you look at the bottom of the conference, I'm
looking at teams that are hit the portal hard. You
(19:08):
remember I just talked about how Cincinnai didn't have to
hit the portal hard. This year, we're talking about sixty
sixty five new players on teams like West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Colorado,
and UCF and a lot of those players came in
after spring practice was over. I think that instability is
going to hurt those teams.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
Talk to me about their first game and we'll discuss
the Big ten, in specifically Ohio State, because look, the
first two years of Scott Ciderfield at Cincinnati have been underwhelming,
and they've been doing what they've been doing while trying
to get their feet, you know, trying to achieve some
stability in the Big twelve. I think they've got a
chance to change some people's minds. Week one, a game
(19:45):
in Kansas City. Technically I guess a home game for Cincinnati,
but we all know what the makeup of that crowd
is going to be. You've got Nebraska kind of middle
of the pack of the Big Ten. Do you give
the Bearcats a chance against the Cornhuskers?
Speaker 7 (19:58):
You know, I think they do have a chance. I
do favorite Nebraska for the game, but I only have
a three point favorite in it, just so because I'm
so bullish on Cincinnati, but I'm also bullish on Nebraska
this year. You know, Matt Roll each of his first
two head coaching jobs at Temple and Baylor, got the
double digit wins in his third year, and you look
at him last year. Dominic Raiola came out of the
box pretty good. He had a really good start to
(20:19):
the season on nine to two ratio his first five games,
then surprisingly they went sideways a four to nine ratio
the rest of the of the year. But remember he
was a true freshman. Now he's a veteran. I think
you'll see Rael will be one of the better quarterbacks
in the Big Ten this year. They're deep at running back,
offensive lines, veteran group, and the defense is solid throughout.
(20:41):
So I've got Nebraska as a team that might be,
you know, could could flirt with that double digit record,
and they are my number seven surprise team this year,
and a surprise team is a team that is not
in the top ten at the start of the year
that I think actually is a shot of making the playoff.
I think Nebraska is a legitimate in the Big Ten
this year. So that's a tough test for Cincinnati. But
(21:03):
like I said, I only have a three point favorite
in the game, even though I'm that high on them,
just because I'm also so high on Cincinnati.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
You talk about your experience index, and I think that's
where you can ding Ohio State a little bit this year.
And look, there's still loads of talent. But is that
the primary reason why you have them just beneath Penn
State and your Big Ten predictions?
Speaker 7 (21:24):
Yes, And you know When you look at Ohio State,
there's no doubt the talent on the field, it's just inexperience.
And last year you're looking at a team that almost
everybody that could have gone to the NFL opted to return.
So it was a senior laden team loaded with guys
that could be in the NFL that actually returned because
they wanted a pair of gold pants. They wanted to
beat Michigan. Well, guess what. They didn't beat Michigan. They
(21:46):
didn't win the Big Ten, but they won the national title.
So okay, it worked out for him pretty good. But
fourteen players out the window in the NFL draft, now,
it's not going to be like Michigan last year. I
remember Michigan went from being the defending national champ all
the way down to six and five and the double
digit underdog at Ohio State looking at the six and
sixth season in the face until their season turned around
(22:08):
at the end. Much better for Ohio State. In fact,
they could very well be favored in every single game
this year, and yes I'm including the Penn State game
that they have at home. I like Julian sayin coming
in at quarterback, he was my number one rateed quarterback
out of high school. You got to like the talent.
They have a running back bringing in Donaldson from West Virginia,
added the Peoples and Jackson and Jeremiah Smith is one
(22:28):
of the best players in the entire country, let alone
just wide receiver. Defensively, they got Caleb Downs, one of
the best defensive players in the country. You can go
on and on. The talent wise is all there for
Ohio State. The biggest question is experience and will they
be able to get there at the end. But like
I mentioned, they could very well be favored in all
twelve games, their favorite in the open or over Texas.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
Already Phil Steele is with his annual college football preview
is available phil Steele dot com. You pick Kentucky to
finish second to last in the SEC. I just I
have a feeling it's going to get sideways in Lexington.
The quality of that league, the season they had last year,
what they return are things as bleak as they might
(23:09):
seem from a distance in Lexington.
Speaker 7 (23:12):
It does seem like especially when you in factor in
the schedule. Mo I mean, if they were playing a
more favorable schedule. Let's say it's a schedule like Missouri
faces this year, it might be different. But when you
look at them in big or in SEC play, they
host Mississippi, there'll be an underdog in that. They go
at South Carolina, there'll be an underdog there. At Georgia
underdog home against Texas underdog Tennessee. That might be a
(23:36):
shot there. I mean Tennessee does have the quarterback questions,
Aguilar at the quarterback spot coming in. Didn't have a
great year at app State last year. That might be
one where they're not an underdog. They got to play
Auburn on the road injured, and air Florida at Vanderbilt
and used to think, hey, Vanderbilt's an easy win, right,
But you know, Vanderbilt's got Pavia back at quarterback, and
(23:58):
then even factor in India at Louisville to finish off
the season. Not overwhelming talent, had to hit the portal hard,
a lot of new faces on the team. It does
look that way. It looks like a tough year for
Kentucky this year. I picked them fifteenth in the SEC.
I think that's about where they were picked by the
media too.
Speaker 4 (24:16):
Right, Yes, yeah, no, it's your predictions fall in line.
Speaker 3 (24:20):
I just I don't know a Kentucky fan who feels
all that optimistic as a U see guys, as Cincinnati guy,
I feel better about my team, especially after talking to you,
than most Kentucky fans I know feel about their squad.
Speaker 7 (24:32):
Yeah, and I think that is the case this year.
And you know, a lot's going to depend on how
quickly Zach Calzana grasps a whole of that offense. Does
the Big Blue O line finally live up to when
we think about with the Big Blue O line? And defensively,
there's some players up front. You look at David Jes
at defense, tackle Cam Olds at the jack. But like
I mentioned, they're going to have to pull some upsets
(24:55):
this year to have a successful season.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
And Oxford Chuck Martin and will have you eleven new
starters on offense. I think people who don't follow the
MAC might not realize how good his program has been
the last couple of years. You've got him in contention
for a MAC title this season. What do you like
about the RedHawks.
Speaker 7 (25:14):
Chuck Martin? I mean, you know he's going to put
a quality, He's going to put some quality on the field,
and then you know the sneaky thing there is bringing
in to Kwan Finn at the quarterback spot. The last
time we saw the kwan Finn he was at Toledo
as a record setting quarterback, spent last year at Baylor,
but now he's back in the MAC. So having him
back a deep set of running backs that they have
(25:34):
question marks would be the basically a brand new offensive line.
And then you know, those are questions. But I like
the fact that the kwan Finn's there. And I tell
you what a lot of years, you know, go over
the team with Chuck Martin and I'm like, yeah, I
don't know. They don't have a lot of experience, and
yet boom, they get the experience in those non conference
(25:54):
games and once they get the MAC play, they're playing
pretty good. So I think they'll once again be a
contender despite the fact they don't have very much experience
this year.
Speaker 3 (26:02):

Tony Pike joining us for hourly training camp reports day three.
Finishing up today, no practice tomorrow. They're back at it
on Sunday. Tony Who who won today at Bengals training camp?
Speaker 11 (30:48):
Jermaine Burton won today at Bengals training camp. Though Jermaine
Burton looked good today, He's looked good all week in
my opinion. He he dominated some some matchups against the
number two's and what I think is even more important,
yesterday at training camp Joe Burrow found him on the
first playoff team and today Joe Burrow also went the
way of Jermaine Burton multiple times in a team setting.
(31:10):
I think Jermaine Burton's had a great start. There's still
a long way to go. But a former second round
pick last year that was drafted to do big things,
maybe fill the void of t Higgins if he weren't
going to be a Bengal, has had a much better
start to this year's training camp.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
You know, it's got to start somewhere, and it started
months ago, you know, showing up being at the facility,
going through OTA's doing all the right things by all
accounts during the offseason, showing up and having a good
first few days of training camp among many players.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
I'm really interested. I can't wait to see what he.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
Does against the Philadelphia Eagles, because that's that to me,
is when and how the narrative surrounding Jermaine Burton can change.
Speaker 11 (31:50):
Yeah, and how do they use him? Is it strictly
wide receiver three or as we talked about earlier. What's
his role in the special team's return game kickoffs punts?
Is he ever return type of guy to see the
pac Man Jones role. When you need a big return,
you put Jermaine Burton out there. I think it's gonna
be fascinating to see how Jermaine Burton and his usage
unfold just camp goes along.
Speaker 4 (32:11):
Should I be worried about Lucas Patrick, I don't.
Speaker 11 (32:17):
I don't think so. At this point, he seemed to
be okay, walking off under his own power, had a
little bit of a limp they had the off day tomorrow.
I don't know if you're concern about him, because I.
Speaker 6 (32:28):
Don't know what the role was gonna be.
Speaker 11 (32:29):
Was he brought in here to be a backup or
is he brought in here to compete for a starting job.
I don't think he's competing for a starting job. I
think they're gonna have Dylan. I think they're gonna have
Dylan fail Fairchild do everything he can to win that job.
So no, I don't think the concern is there at
this point.
Speaker 4 (32:44):
Uh, when do they start hitting?
Speaker 11 (32:47):
Hopefully next week. This is the ramp up the ecconmonization
period as they call it, where you got to do
a couple of days without full pads on. But next
week they should get some pads on. We should start
to hear some studding, may be even some tackling. Because
this is a camp like we haven't seen before normally.
When you talk about the Bengals camp, the first three
days they're out of there in an hour, hour and
(33:09):
twenty minutes. You've seen it. They've been out there almost
two hours every single day. There's been more individual drill work,
there's been more teamwork. The next step is what I'm
looking for is are are they a little bit more
physical when they take the field and and I think
that's something that you cross another box off of what's
different in the offseason to hopefully alleviate a slow start.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
Well and you brought this up this morning.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
I know it's early, but in three days we've seen
full participation. I'm not sure that's usually the case. I'm
not sure that's usually where I think it's usually. You know,
there's a veteran day, even early, especially because of the heat.
We've had back to back really hot days. Full participation.
I think that's not insignificant.
Speaker 11 (33:53):
Yeah, I think there is a an understanding with the
coaching staff and that that leaks down into the team
as well, that there are expectations that this camp is
going to be handled differently because this team can ill
afford another loss in Week one against an inferior opponent.
It cannot afford another one in three start or something
like that. You're gonna have guys take vet days, but
(34:15):
I don't I don't think you also have enough guys
that have earned VET days on this roster, and the
guys that have earned it won't get them. But I
don't think you're going to see as many of those
as camp unfolds, because you need the value of those
reps not only for the players, but a lot of
new coaches across this staff as well that need to
evaluate every rep as much as possible.
Speaker 4 (34:34):
Did today's training camp practice have a loser?
Speaker 8 (34:39):
To me?
Speaker 11 (34:39):
The rule that if a ball goes into where the
fans are sitting, they don't get to keep the ball.
I don't know who's made that roll up. I don't
know if it's an NFL rule, but there is a
roped off section all around camp. If someone comes over
the rope to try.
Speaker 6 (34:52):
To grab a ball, I get it.
Speaker 11 (34:55):
If that ball leaves the field and goes into the
roped area you mentioned the canty on someone under the
age of eighteen gets that ball, they should be able
to keep that ball as a souvenir.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
We're on the same page there. We'll chat again coming

Speaker 3 (36:17):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thanks so much for listening today.
Taylor Xwellman from MLS Season Pass on Apple TV is
going to be with us in just about thirty minutes,
and Brendanman and Jones on baseball as well. And I
have a question for thirty percent of Reds fans in
a second, the Jermaine Burton thing is not insignificant. Now,
(36:41):
I will make this admission that I take a lot
of what I see in training camp, and more than
anything what I hear from training camp, I often take
a lot of those things with large grains of saw.
Speaker 9 (36:54):
Right.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
I've I've watched people in training camp slab or over Audentate.
Audentate's poised to make a big difference this year. It's like, yeah,
is he? Is he really right? I tell you what,
Jake Cumero, Jake Cumero's turning some heads down there?
Speaker 4 (37:09):
Is he He's turning heads?
Speaker 12 (37:10):
Huh?
Speaker 4 (37:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (37:11):
Did he turn heads with those twenty seven career catches
he had?
Speaker 9 (37:14):
So?
Speaker 3 (37:15):
I you know these sometimes these narratives can form and
they're fun to discuss, and I certainly believe we take
way too much time talking about the back end of
the roster, and then once the games actually start, you know,
it's it's the dudes at the top of the depth chart.
It's the guys in the front of the roster, and
a nature Audentates and Jake Cumeros nothing against those two
(37:36):
men individually. And so you're gonna hear Jermaine Burton's had
a good camp so far, and you're gonna make a face.
And that's Jermaine Burton's fault, right when you are the
screw up. What happens is when people start to hear
that the screw up is doing some good things. It's like, yeah, okay,
sure whatever. I'll really believe it when I see it
(37:59):
when it matters. So I understand that, and hopefully Jermaine
Burton would be the first to admit to you, like,
I don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. And I'm
going to have to do more than just have a
good offseason and a few good training camp practices for
anybody to believe that I can be counted on, much
less that I can be believed in to actually make
a significant difference for this football team. But it does
(38:23):
have to start somewhere. And look, man, we've made fun
of Jermaine Burton. We've criticized the Bengals for taking him.
We've criticized Jermaine Burton for not growing up. I believe,
in fairness, the dudes on the team, there's no reason
to root against him. You have to acknowledge a that
if he's ever going to make something of himself as
an NFL football player, it's got to start somewhere. It
(38:47):
starts as simple as showing up. So he has done that,
and then it's going to continue in settings that are
not you know, in the public, realm meeting rooms, stuff
in the locker room, interactions with his teammates, interactions with
his coach, is being there on time, not falling asleep
in the meeting room, that sort of thing. I'm not
privy to any of that. I did watch practice today.
(39:09):
Tony and I were down there doing our show, and
Jermaine Burton had a good day. And all you're hoping
for is that he could stack good days, stack enough
good days that that trust, which was completely eroded last year,
starts to be rebuilt. And look, man, I'm a human being.
I root for human beings. It does no one any
(39:31):
good for Jermaine Burton to be a flame out. He
might not be an all Pro caliber player, he might
not even be a player who makes that significant a
contribution to the Cincinnati Bengals. Who's rooting for a flame out?
That doesn't do anybody any good. So from a humor perspective,
you just want the light bulb to come on so
the guy can be a pro. And whatever bad habits
(39:52):
are there that we're getting in the way of him
having success, you want them behind him. But for this team,
it's very early, their training camp practices, they're not worth
taking all that seriously. If you're looking for hard conclusions
about individual players or what the team might do this year.
But if you knew nothing about Jermaine Burton today, if
(40:15):
you knew nothing about his background, didn't know when he
was drafted, didn't know how things went for him his
rookie season, if you knew none of that and all
you saw was number eighty one, you would go that
guy's pretty good. That guy could do a lot of
different things. He ran a lot of different routes. They
did a lot of different stuff with him today, just
a step in the right direction. I cannot wait for
(40:36):
the first preseason game when they played Philadelphia, because I
think it would be cool if they put him on
the field and he did something, whether it's a special
team's play, makes a player two on offense against guys
who are actually going to play in the NFL, and
that's when the narrative is going to change. But I'll
tell you this from my vantage point, which is, look,
(40:59):
it's not Tony Pikes. I admit that I if you
knew nothing about Jermaine Burton, you would go all.
Speaker 4 (41:05):
Right, like that, that guy.
Speaker 3 (41:07):
Looks like he's a tough cover. That guy looks like
he knows what he's doing. That guy looks like he's
building a relationship with Joe Burrow. These things on July
twenty fifth should be taken with large grains of salt.
But it's got to start somewhere and then it has
to continue. Maybe maybe it started this off season and
(41:31):
it's continuing now in training camp ten minutes after four
o'clock on ESPN fifteen thirty five point three seven four
nine fifteen thirty is our phone number. We have poll
questions on this show on Twitter at Moe Egger and
our pole questions are brought to you by United Heartland Insurance.
When you look at what you're paying in insurance premiums
(41:53):
for your car, for your house, or if you're a
business owner, maybe for the cars you have in your business,
whatever they are. Uh, see what thanks're paying and then
see what the folks that United Heartland Insurance can do
for you to maybe help you pay less. Check out
uhi ns dot com. I will admit that today's Poul
question is somewhat facetious. As a Reds fan, what would
(42:14):
give you more joy a seeing the Reds play in
the postseason or b opening up Baseball America to see
the Reds farm system listed as Baseball's best. Ninety one
point four percent of you say play in the postseason.
Speaker 4 (42:31):
I believe that.
Speaker 3 (42:32):
I believe if you're voting on that, you're voting, you're
you're you're answering truthfully. But it is interesting to me
that I feel like we have among us folks who
view themselves as huge Reds fans who are almost afraid
(42:54):
of making a trade. I'm just gonna use the one
that has been talked about most as an example. There
are others Euhanius Suarez. The Reds are two games out
of the last wildcard. That may change. It might change
by the end of this weekend. It might change over
the course of the next six days. It may change
for the better, it may change for the worse. Right now,
the Reds are contenders to make the postseason. They have
(43:17):
an uphill battle. I believe is currently constructed that this
team is not good enough to make the postseason. But
I certainly don't believe the gap is wider than the
couple of games between them and the San Diego Padres.
And they're in a crowded mix Giants, the Cardinals, Cincinnati,
San Diego and the teams ahead of the Padres. I
believe there's value in making the playoffs. I believe for
(43:39):
a team filled with guys who have yet to play
in the postseason, that experience could pay dividends down the road.
I think there's something significant if this team can make
the postseason when you haven't advanced in the playoffs in
three decades. I think it's important to you know, get
put that behind you, right, scrape that off the plate,
advance in the postseason, and yeah, man, there's an element
(44:01):
of randomness in the playoffs that if you get in,
you got a shot. I think making the postseason is
worth really pursuing. And when I say it's worth really pursuing,
I'm willing to give up something to achieve that goal.
I feel like there are among us Reds fans who
are like, afraid, let's just make it about aj Haenio Suarez,
(44:26):
who obviously would cost a lot. The Diamondbacks asking price
should be high. They should drag this out into the
last minute to get the best possible offer. That's what
they should do. If you or I ran the Diamondbacks,
that's what we would do. I asked the Paul question yesterday,
are you Hanio Suarez or I don't know man prospects.
(44:47):
I think there's some combination of obsession with prospects and
fear about what might happen if the Red's part with
them that makes people think, oh no, we we don't
want an upgrade. I think the two most interesting names
from an offensive perspective that I've seen, and there are
others are Euhaneus Juarez and Stephen Kwan. You know Ry
(45:11):
McMahon got traded today. I think there's pros and cons there.
But you know, good defensively, controllable for a couple of years.
He's a lefty batter. Maybe he's not helping you so
much against lefties. He strikes out a ton, but he
would be He would be a nice piece to add.
But I feel like, forget who you would be getting back.
(45:32):
I think one of the most puzzling things about being
a baseball fan over the last fifteen to twenty years
has been how some have developed a weird obsession with prospects.
Speaker 4 (45:47):
Prospects are important.
Speaker 3 (45:48):
I'm not dismissing that we get experts on to talk
prospects and talk about the farm system. The draft has
never been more important. You want a really good minor
league system that is constantly churning out good players, constantly
churning out players who can help almost instantly at the
big league level. You got to be able to replace
players that you lose in free agency, and it's best
(46:09):
to be able to do them with your own guys.
Not diminishing or not dismissing the importance of prospects, but
holy crap, I'm almost tired of hearing about them. And
be honest with you, man, I am, and maybe I'm
in the minority here, but if it's just me, I'm
willing to give up some of those dudes for the
(46:29):
sake of going for it this year. And you know what,
if you go for it it doesn't work, it's fine.
Like many times, not as many as I would like,
the threads have gone for it, man, and it didn't work.
They kind of went forward in twenty twelve. In fact,
they didn't kind of. They went forward in twenty twelve,
which is now forever ago. On one hand, it worked,
(46:50):
they win ninety seven games. On the other hand, they
didn't advance in the postseason, blew it to nothing. Lead
But you know what, I could live with the results,
and I could live with these subsequent results.
Speaker 4 (46:59):
Red's traded away that off season.
Speaker 3 (47:01):
They traded away four guys who would appear in All
Star Games for other clubs. Travis wood Yasmani grand Dog
got traded yonder A, Lonzo Brad Boksburger. They also traded
away Edwin Edinson Volcez, who ended up pitching in the
World Series for the Royals in twenty fifteen. You know what, fine,
they went for it. They went for it when the
time demanded, they went for it. Twenty twenty didn't really
(47:22):
work out. COVID was not their fault, you know, spend
some money on some contracts that didn't really pan out,
Shogo Akiyama, Mike Mustakis, But you know what, went for it. Sometimes,
like it just makes sense to go for it. Maybe
the Reds aren't gonna win the World Series no matter
who they acquire, but wouldn't it be fun just for
(47:43):
once to see them do something bold and aggressive with
the intention of being in the mix when the postseason begins.
And if you're in the mix when the postseason begins,
you've got at least a puncher's chance. I am puzzled,
and I certainly don't believe that like every player should
be for sale. Clearly you have guys who are untouchable.
(48:05):
But if you can't make a trade that's out there
for a guy who has a pace to hit fifty
home runs this season because of prospects, and it's gonna
be it's gonna ruin our farm system and we're gonna
have no chance of winning down the road. Your organization's
terrible then, And I don't think the Reds organization is terrible.
(48:27):
I can't find one evaluator who thinks the Reds farm
system is bad.
Speaker 4 (48:30):
What are we afraid of?
Speaker 3 (48:33):
Like, legitimately, I feel like I almost have to do
an intervention, Like it's okay to go for it. It's
okay to prioritize making the playoffs, and it's okay if
you go for it and it doesn't work like you tried.
We're not having a conversation about a team nine games
(48:56):
out of the wildcard. We're not having a conversation about
a team that is just so decimated by injury, talking
about a team that has stayed afloat just enough to
be in the hunt, not that far to the last
playoff spot. Again, Man, the onuses on this team is
currently constructed right now. There's been some good, there's been
some not so good. I didn't like how they played
that series this week against Washington. I forgot who they've
(49:20):
played for a second. Uh you know, they played sloppy baseball.
They made base running mistakes. Defensively, they weren't all that good.
Speaker 4 (49:29):
By the way.
Speaker 3 (49:30):
It's worth pointing out, though, what do we say at
the All Star break? Had to change? Matt McLean had
to start hitting dudes. Hitting his last eight, it's made
good hard contact. I don't know, man, I just maybe
it's just me, and maybe it's looking at social media
a little bit too much. I am a little surprised
at when you bring up the idea. But again, just
(49:50):
make it about a UHANEO. Hey, this guy's got thirty
six bombs this year. He's an All Star. You know
what he can do. He's been good in your uniform before.
Franchise thinks a lot of by all accounts, an awesome dude.
Yes he would cost a lot, and yes, paying a
lot for a two month rental is a tough pill
to swallow. I will acknowledge those things. But the instant
(50:11):
resistance or hesitancy to even think about a trade because
of prospects. I don't understand it. I don't think I
ever will understand it. Maybe you can help me. Five
point three seven four nine, fifteen thirty. Nobody is saying
screw up your farm system. I'm not even saying you
shouldn't kind of overpay sometimes in life you have to.
(50:34):
It was remarkable to me two years ago the Reds
were in first place at the deadline, had a gaping hole.
Speaker 4 (50:39):
They did nothing. And I know people in my life
who are Reds.
Speaker 3 (50:44):
Fans who are like, oh, good, good, yeah, keep these prospects.
Speaker 4 (50:47):
Like your first place, your first place. You're not going
for it.
Speaker 3 (50:55):
So maybe you can help me understand the obsession with prospects.
I've been rooting for this team for a long time.
I've sat in the last thirty years, most septembers. They're
nowhere close to in it. I have not seen a
winning Reds playoff game in person as an adult, Like
(51:18):
that's what I care about. I'm not that interested in
who can help the team in twenty twenty seven and
twenty twenty eight. I know that's not nuanced, I know
that's short sighted, but that's where I am, and I

Speaker 12 (53:57):
I'm really enjoying a lot of broadcasts that you and
Tony are do. I mean, sometimes it gets a little monotonous,
but otherwise I think it sounds like fun because I
can tell you guys are enjoying yourself. I know it's
a long day, but we appreciate you guys doing that.
Speaker 4 (54:12):
Thanks very much. This is a fun job.
Speaker 3 (54:14):
It's more fun when you're out and about and uh,
and it's even more fun when you're getting a chance
to be around things you love. And so it's uh,
it's it's a lot of fun. And you know, Tony
does his show with Austin. It's it's fun to do
a show with uh with with Tony, it's uh. I'm
really enjoying it. And I hope, uh, I hope you
and the others are as well.
Speaker 12 (54:36):
And we know you love the heat. I do, although
you might be at your breaking point off and on,
you know, we love the heat.
Speaker 3 (54:45):
We've got a tent, we've got a fan. But I
do love the heat. I like summer heat. I'm here
for it.
Speaker 12 (54:51):
I have a couple of comments about the Raise Red
Series coming up. Okay from that standpoint, but real quick,
before I get to that. Did you hear about Ben
Johnson today? Don't sending the whole first two twos, the
whole defensive and offensive first string teams, get out of here,
(55:13):
go home?
Speaker 9 (55:14):
Beat it.
Speaker 3 (55:14):
You're talking about the new Bears coach.
Speaker 12 (55:18):
Yeah, I'm sorry, the new Bears coach. It was it
was so cool. I got such a kick out. And
then I heard him talking about it, and he had
no preparation about doing it. He was rock solid with
how he felt about it. And he said, you guys,
we're not in spring camp now. Yeah, if you're not
going to be serious and beat it.
Speaker 4 (55:38):
Yeah he was.
Speaker 3 (55:39):
I guess he was upset with how his team, how
his offense was breaking the huddle, right.
Speaker 12 (55:44):
Yeah, he was really pissed off.
Speaker 14 (55:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (55:47):
Well, and that's good.
Speaker 4 (55:49):
That is good.
Speaker 3 (55:49):
There were a lot of folks who thought that Ben
Johnson was going to be like this, this mild, timid
guy coming over from the Detroit Lions, and maybe not so.
Speaker 12 (55:57):
Much, Maybe not so much. Here's a here's another question
with the Bengals. I got because this is a negotiating
question I heard. I heard Damian Woody earlier today, who
I really liked Damian WOODI. I tend to really gravitate
the offensive wineman when it comes to estm and sayings.
(56:18):
And his his comment was that when he heard Mike
Brown's comment here recently regarding the hendricks H Hendrickson UH negotiations,
that that Mike Brown used the term the word I'm
having to deal with this and and he said, you know,
(56:41):
as a player, that's that's not a good word. You know,
it's like saying, oh, hell, you know you're thinking this,
Hell I got to deal with Mike's call again, or
whole hell, I gotta go home and deal.
Speaker 9 (56:52):
With the kid.
Speaker 12 (56:53):
You know, that's not the term you want to use.
Why not working with him? Or we're we're negotiating but
not dealing. It's just bad, not good.
Speaker 3 (57:04):
Yeah, I guess so I didn't really view it that way.
I mean I heard exasperation and I heard exhaustion. And look,
you could very well argue, well, then if you're exhausted
and disasper and exasperated, then rip up the contract and
drop a new one. Without the language that's pissed off
Samar Stewart and his and his agent. I just took
it as expressing some fatigue with how this process unfolds
(57:29):
and exasperation not so much with the player but with
the agent and but I I guess I do see
Damien Woody's point, at least to a degree. Mike, I
got like, one more minute.
Speaker 12 (57:40):
What else you got okay to over the weekend? Got
three tough, three tough pictures. Latl's tough, Patio's tough, Bob.
They're all tough. They're all right, anders good for the Reds.
The Raids are leading, you know, they're leading all on
the Major Lays and stolen bases, their third and let's
(58:00):
see the third and pitching they're you know, they're eleventh
in pitching, they're third. And hitting they're leading of major
leagues and stolen bases. I mean, this is a tough
this is a tough team to deal with, and they're
a young team. So it's gonna be a hard series
for the Reds.
Speaker 3 (58:16):
Uh yeah, I'll grant you that it will be. Somehow,
the Chicago White Sox might think so much. The Chicago
White Sox just beat him. Two out of three and
the White Sox are awful. Here's what I want to
know about this series this weekend. What do they get
from Brady Singer on Sunday? Because his last five or
six starts he has been atrocious, And let's face it,
the way this series is likely to go, it's a
(58:37):
very good chance that's the rubber match. FC Cincinnati just
played Miami beat him MESSI didn't score. He ain't gonna
score tomorrow because he's been suspended. Taylor Twelveman from Apple
TV MLS's and Pass joins US.
Speaker 2 (58:49):
Next Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 3 (59:27):
Get really busy for FC Cincinnati starting tomorrow night in Miami.
Five matches in fifteen days with the League's Cup starting
here very very soon. First match for FC Cincinnati and
that competition is going to be in six days. First
things first, FC Cincinnati versus Miami tomorrow night, roadmatch for
the Orange and Blue starts at seven fifteen. No, Lionel
(59:49):
Messi a suspension because he skipped the MLS All Star Game.
FC Cincinnati just played Interer Miami last week and won
that match decisively by a score of three nothing. Watch
the game on MLS Season Past Apple TV, and that's
where our guy Taylor Twelman will have the match for
us and kind enough to give us a few minutes today.
Speaker 4 (01:00:08):
Taylor, it's awesome to have you. Good afternoon.
Speaker 6 (01:00:10):
How are you good?
Speaker 14 (01:00:11):
How are you?
Speaker 4 (01:00:11):
But I'm good.
Speaker 3 (01:00:13):
Do we like this rule that if you skip the
All Star Game you have to miss the next regular
season match.
Speaker 14 (01:00:18):
No, but I also think, you know, we've got to
have a little bit of perspective of when this rule
came into play. I was on ESPN at the time.
It's a lot of Tin Ibrahimovich, one of the greatest
players of his generation, asked for more money. Skip the
All Star Game in Atlanta. Again, Juventus was rightfully so
suspended afterwards. And the reality is, when the rule came
(01:00:41):
into place, the league was at a different place. I
think the reality is this is that when the Club
World Cup came into play this year, the schedule became
congested for LAFC, Seattle and the Miami and I think
the league probably wishes they would have reflected on that
looked at it, the fact that an Fcincinnati and other
teams got a nine to eleven day break while those
(01:01:04):
teams are playing in the Club World Cup. I think
they probably would have given those three franchises the option
for those players to play in the All Star Game.
But a rule is a rule, and so whether or
not you believe a rule is antiquated doesn't mean that
you also can't believe that a rule should be followed.
And I ultimately think Don Garbin made the right decision.
Speaker 3 (01:01:25):
The second time in ten days, these two sides have
met FC Cincinnati, and they were coming off a real,
real heartbreaker of loss to Columbus just days prior dominated
Miami with Messi on the pitch, Evander was awesome last night.
Speaker 4 (01:01:40):
What from that match do we apply to tomorrow?
Speaker 11 (01:01:42):
Night.
Speaker 14 (01:01:44):
I think Miami's going to be extra motivated because of
this Messi and album missing the game, and I think
FC Cincinnati's got to be prepared. I think Pat Newan's
not an idiot, and he'll have his team prepared for that.
I think the fans of Cincinnati, and I know I'm
sitting here on the ESPN radio here in Cincinnati, a
lot of conversations and a lot of talking from you
(01:02:05):
guys on the ruling whether or not Messi and Alba
should be played, should play. The reality is now there's
real pressure on Cincinnati. You gotta deliver. This is a
good team with Dinner Miami with Messi without Messy. Yes,
are they different. Sure, I'm not an idiot, but the
point being is that they're still a good team. They're
gonna be chomping at the bit. They're gonna be at home,
(01:02:25):
and I like how Pat Noon and Matt Miaska and
this group regrouped after that disappointing loss to Columbus and
took care of Messi. But that was their third game,
if not in seven to eight days for Miami, this
is gonna be a rested group. I expect maybe the
game of the year with how both teams are gonna
be going after it. But Cincinnati knows in the back
(01:02:47):
of their mind that if they win Saturday nights. Now,
all of a sudden, you're making it really, really difficult
for Miami to have any part of the supporter show
race of the number one seed in the Eastern Conference.
So I it feels to me like a real opportunity
for Cincinnati to eliminate Miami and in some respects and
(01:03:09):
just have to narrow it down to the other teams
in the East.
Speaker 3 (01:03:13):
Yeah, that's well put. I like the fact that we've
established that neither you or Pat Noonan are idiots. That's
that's very very important. Seventeen tomorrow night, Uh, handicap it. Look,
the match tomorrow is going to go a long way
toward determining how the East unfolds, and obviously the supporter
shield as well. And last time we had you on,
we talked about the Eastern Conference. It's still really really tight.
(01:03:34):
It's still really really good at the top. How do
you break it down?
Speaker 14 (01:03:37):
Yeah, I think Nashville's thrown a little bit of a
wrinkle into that. Last time you and I spoke, I'm
not sure we would have had Nashville in the conversation,
Philadelphia has limped a little bit after an amazingly hot
start for them. I think Columbus is going to have
something to say because they're this summer window going to
make a signing or two that's going to hance their roster.
I still look at it as Sinconnat to lose. I
(01:04:00):
think they're the most balanced. I think they have arguably
the best player in the league not named Messi and Evander.
I think he's been brilliant and I think he's only
gonna get better if Denke gets healthy. I just I
like Cincinnati because Mioska is coming back healthy, He's playing
himself in the match. Fitness Miles Robinson returns from national
team duty depends on how they look at League's Cup,
(01:04:24):
and I expect them to really look at this and say,
we're going to play a mixed bag of roster just
so we can preserve the legs. This is about Cincinnati,
whinning the supporters shield and the number one C in
the East. I think it's theirs to lose.
Speaker 4 (01:04:37):
Yeah, I would. I would agree with that.
Speaker 3 (01:04:40):
And the bounce back after that loss to Columbus the
way to me, it's been a hallmark of Pat Noonan's
time in Cincinnati where they will they'll lay a clunker.
It doesn't turn into consecutive clunkers. They'll lose a heartbreaker,
and unfortunately they've got a little bit of a track
record of them in matches like the one against Columbus
doesn't affect him the next go round. There's lots to
love about Pat new and then this is more of
(01:05:00):
a statement than it is a question, but to me,
that's at the top of the list. The bounce back ability,
both from victories and from tough losses, has been something
to watch.
Speaker 14 (01:05:09):
Yeah, you lose to Columbus in the fashion that they did,
usually Pat Noonon and the staff will have a good
conversation with the players and have it kind of laid
out on the floor. I can promise you this. After
the loss of Columbus, there wasn't a lot of listening
from Pat noon and in the staff. There was a
lot of talking, and I think that established exactly where
(01:05:29):
it was. He's always been a straight shooter, Dominic Kanear,
Kenny Arena, everybody else on that staff, Chris Alibry, there's
no real bs around them, and so you're gonna see
you see what you get, and I think after Columbus
they had it coming to Jesus, for lack of a
better way to put it, of saying, listen, either we're
gonna do this or not. That's why the win against
Miami was such a big statement in my opinion, because
(01:05:52):
not only was it a win, it was a dominating
win with Messi on the field. That's why I think
tomorrow night's even a better opportunit unity for them, knowing
that Miami's going to be a little bit anger angered
at the suspension, so now they're at home. If you
can win on the road against Miami where Cincinnati's arguably
(01:06:13):
the best team in the league on the road, great
opportunity to really put your foot on the pedals, so
to speak, and take that number one see in the East.
Speaker 3 (01:06:22):
Awesome stuff, as always can thank you enough. Should be
a lot of fun. Tomorrow seven fifteen, Apple TV MLS
Season pass we'll be watching Taylor.
Speaker 14 (01:06:30):

(01:08:14):
The Bengals are off tomorrow. I'm off tomorrow. Is it
still okay if I call you three times in the
afternoon just to talk about the Bengals.
Speaker 11 (01:08:22):
Yeah, I mean, I think if you didn't it would
feel more awkward than the other way around. So I'll
plan on three calls. We can just kind of we
could talk about that. Maybe we could talk, you know,
our favorite Halt Cogan matches. We could talk some big
three red Rays, whatever you want.
Speaker 4 (01:08:37):
Lots to talk about. Yeah, there is. Here's what I like.
Speaker 3 (01:08:40):
I'm reading about the end of training camp practice today.
Evan McPherson Dreil drills a fifty two yarder. He's twelve
for twelve so far this camp.
Speaker 11 (01:08:48):
Tony, how about that? He's been unbelievable for the Cincinnati
Bengals in training camp up to this point. It is.
It's one of the we talked earlier today. It's one
of the X factors that I think has people thinking
about this team. There were games lost last year on
the leg of Evan McPherson, and it changes the mentality
of a quarterback. I've talked about it. You've kind of
(01:09:11):
seen the way play calling and in the aggressiveness at
times from Zach Taylor in this offense last year when
they didn't have as much confidence in Evan McPherson. You
need your kicker to be a weapon, and you need
your kicker to take some pressure off the offense. And
let's face it, the offense for the Bengals is fantastic.
They're also under a lot of pressure because everyone says
(01:09:31):
the same thing, the offense has to score thirty. Well,
you deal with that much pressure, you've got to be
able to alleviate that with some points elsewhere. That's where
Evin McPherson should come up.
Speaker 3 (01:09:41):
We talked about the winner of training camp today being
Jermaine Burton.
Speaker 4 (01:09:46):
Was there anybody on defense who stood out today.
Speaker 11 (01:09:50):
It's so hard on the defensive side of the ball
because they don't have pads on yet. So when they
do a team drill, you may see the running back
get stopped for no game, but you don't know if
that would have been an actual tackle in a game
setting because of the inability to tackle when you're not
in full pad. So it's hard to pick that out.
(01:10:11):
I think you and I both watched a lot of
passes completed on the offensive side of the ball, so
you wouldn't say that anyone in the secondary essentially stood out.
So it's hard on a day like today, when the
offense has seen so much success back to back to
really pinpoint anyone on the defense.
Speaker 3 (01:10:27):
I asked you earlier, you know, when are they going
to start to hit? When are we going to see
our first fight?
Speaker 11 (01:10:33):
Ooh, next week. I'm going to put that on next week,
next week, midweek, next week, midweek, next week.
Speaker 8 (01:10:39):
You don't.
Speaker 11 (01:10:41):
Last couple of years, there's been that joint practice. Yeah,
that you just think as a player, Okay, we don't
have to hit our own guys anymore. You're going to
go from the starter camp to the end of camp
this year, going against the same one or two guys
every single rep. Eventually there are going to be tempers
that are lost. You saw even a little bit today.
Jermaine Burden made one of his touchdown catches today. The
(01:11:01):
corner was trying to rip it away and Jermaine Barton
essentially threw the ball at the corner and today it
just kind of dissipated. Do something like that next week
and you might feel a little bit more follow up,
a little bit more heat on the back end of that.
So kempers are gonna flare. Training camp fights happen all
the time. Some coaches view those from an intensity standpoint
of something you want as long as you don't go
(01:11:23):
over the line. And you know, we talk about seeing
swinging helmets and things like that.
Speaker 3 (01:11:27):
Yeah, I would like to see a swinging helmet, to
be honest with you, that would be since we're down there,
I think that would be a lot of fun.
Speaker 4 (01:11:33):
All right, Tony, we'll chat again in just under one hour,
Thanks so much.

My first time ever.

Yeah, you feel free to call him mister Cube if
you would like, Like if my daughter were here, you know,
when I introduced my daughter to people, like, you know,
this is I would say, this is mister Bland, right,
you know, so I would say, Crosley, this is mister Cube, right,
which Crosley, this is my and like my eight year
(01:14:42):
old daughter would laugh at his name's ice Cube? Really, Like,
so I was mister Cube and then he could, you know,
say call me ice call me ice Cube.
Speaker 4 (01:14:51):
But I would say mister Cube.
Speaker 3 (01:14:53):
Perhaps we'll ask him what he prefers to be called
when he's introduced to children. Coming up in just about
twenty five minutes. Uh, take a phone call or two.
Let's go mister A. Mister Ace, you're on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 4 (01:15:07):
What's up?
Speaker 11 (01:15:09):
You know what?
Speaker 8 (01:15:10):
Mo and coutin Tarry, you know what. I'm just happy
to be at a taxi out wonderful people today before
the one two three?
Speaker 4 (01:15:21):
Did we lose you?
Speaker 9 (01:15:22):
Mister?
Speaker 4 (01:15:22):
Are you there?
Speaker 8 (01:15:22):
Mister God knows what the name of the stadium is
gonna be, because it's been about ten bank names in
my lifetime.
Speaker 4 (01:15:29):
Oh, let's see you've had.
Speaker 3 (01:15:31):
You've had the Coliseum, You've had the Crown, You've had
the First Star Center, You've had the US Bank Arena,
and now the Heritage Bank Center.
Speaker 8 (01:15:40):
Okay, okay, okay, well start the Multi Bank Center. Yes,
third a wealthy bank center, man, But I'm glad they
had them chickens that have won several weeks back and
got out of confirmation. Plus going to the music festival.
Speaker 11 (01:15:56):
I got a weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:15:57):
You're gonna be very busy.
Speaker 8 (01:15:58):
That's gonna be fun, yes, yes, yes, but I call
it to be even busier and live rent free in
some of your listener's heads.
Speaker 12 (01:16:06):
Because I believe the.
Speaker 8 (01:16:08):
Cincinnati Rids should do this troll thing, and because our
ownership does not do anything, and they say, what are
we gonna do? I guess, I guess the Reds should
do a fire field.
Speaker 11 (01:16:21):
They should start with Ellie Dela.
Speaker 8 (01:16:23):
Cruz, then move on to the pitching mound. You'll follow
our pitching, and then we can have prospects that we
can have to continue with frustration a Cincinnati fans that
we have had since nineteen.
Speaker 3 (01:16:34):
Ninety Do you know?
Speaker 4 (01:16:36):
Do you know that you say that?
Speaker 3 (01:16:37):
And I bet you there are people listening to our
conversation right now, who are like, yeah, can you imagine
how many prospects you would get for Ellie Dela Cruz?
Speaker 4 (01:16:47):
Yeah, right now.
Speaker 3 (01:16:48):
Nicolodolo's stock is really high. Can you imagine how many
prospects they would get for him? Hey, Andrew Abbott was
an All star, Matt McLean's got an eight game hitting streak.
How about all the prospects you could get for them.
The scary thing to me, mister A says, there are
folks who call them Reds fans, who are like, yeah,
this dude's making a whole lot of sense.
Speaker 8 (01:17:07):
Yeah, but the whole thing is this is a troll
and call.
Speaker 12 (01:17:10):
So I mean, it's like, if you actually.
Speaker 8 (01:17:12):
Think I'm taking this serious, I'm a Reds fan. I mean,
I'm a frustrated Reds fan. I don't believe been trading
for prospects when we've got known commodities, except for if
you're trying to get off that commodity and try and
do some type of rebuilding process. But it's like the
ownership has been in a continuous rebuild stage for so
(01:17:34):
long that it does make fans get a little bit cynical.
It does make fans get a little bit frustrated.
Speaker 15 (01:17:40):
So it's like, I mean, hey, no doubt, and I
got to think about it, and I think to a degree,
like what they didn't do two years ago, Lingers, I
think it does for me like if you're if you're
in first place at the deadline and you don't address
a huge weakness.
Speaker 3 (01:17:56):
They had some of the worst starting pitching in baseball
two years ago. If you leave that unaddressed when you're
in first place, why should I believe that When you're
not in first place but still in contention and you
don't have that gaping weakness, why should I believe that
you're gonna do what you didn't do two years ago
to make your team better?
Speaker 12 (01:18:15):
Man?
Speaker 8 (01:18:15):
I don't know. Man, That's like you got the bases
older than you're gonna go up and play. But that
seems like to be the notion of this team's baseball IQ.
I mean, I'm not saying that they're using a.
Speaker 11 (01:18:27):
Whole bunch of like extra computer.
Speaker 8 (01:18:33):
Check the try and help them out, but I mean
something at some points gotta make sense. I mean, we've
got to I hate to say we got a filler
weigh in the first place, but it almost says like
that's the case and the whole notion.
Speaker 3 (01:18:47):
Man, But maybe I think mister Raisin's awesome to hear
from you and have a have a good, fun, busy
and safe weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:18:56):
Man, Thanks so much, I am and I.
Speaker 3 (01:18:59):
Second time I did this week I cut somebody off
as they were saying goodbye.
Speaker 4 (01:19:04):
It's like I've never done this before.
Speaker 3 (01:19:08):
I you you may you may not want the Reds
to be overly aggressive in pursuing some of the players
who are going to be available as the deadline gets closer.
I guess we're ultimately going to judge them based on
(01:19:29):
the results they achieve, right, and so if they are
relatively inactive. And by the way, I do think the Reds.
I think I believe the front office is trying to
acquire players from the outside. How aggressive will they be,
how many untouchables are there? How much more money will
they be allowed to take on? Are they looking at
(01:19:51):
making multiple like I think there is this suggestion out
there that Nick Crawl is just sitting there, you know,
you know, hanging out in his office, you know, drinking
Margarita's or something and letting the sport pass them by.
I genuinely don't think that's the case. I think there's
an overall lack of aggression that seems to define this
(01:20:12):
organization to a degree. But if they kind of leave
well enough alone stan Pat and get to the postseason,
then you know, I mean, to a degree, that's best
of both worlds.
Speaker 9 (01:20:22):
Right.
Speaker 3 (01:20:22):
We got to the postseason and we held onto all
of our prospects, and I think most fans will go okay,
in real time, wish it would have been a little
bit more aggressive, and you know who knows, like, if
you're in the postseason, that doesn't mean that being an
active can't come back and haunt you. But we're gonna
judge them based on the results what they did two
years ago. What they did two years ago, which was
they relied on good health, better health players, getting healthy
(01:20:45):
players coming back and it didn't work. We judge them
on the results. Had it worked, it would have been man.
Nick Krawl hung on to all their younger players, kept
the team together, and they made the postseason. But if
this year, if this team is two games out of
the playoffs at season's end, which is what it was
(01:21:07):
two years ago, two games out of the playoffs at
season's end, barely miss out in the postseason, and we
look back on the trade deadline as a period of
time where they didn't either act aggressively or maybe turned
down a trade because they didn't want to pay the freight,
(01:21:29):
or sat there and did nothing. I don't know that
this franchise, which cares deeply about public perception, which cares
deeply about what people say and what they write, I
could tell you that firsthand. I'm not sure they're going
to want to know. I'm not sure they're going to
want to pay attention to where public sentiment is if
(01:21:49):
it turns out they missed the postseason a couple of
months after not making a big acquisition. At the end
of the day, the Red success Orf between now and
the end of the season is gonna have a lot
more to do with players who are currently on the team.
Brady Singer has to pitch better.
Speaker 6 (01:22:06):
I think.
Speaker 3 (01:22:07):
I think Sunday is a very very big start for
Brady Singer his last five or six as era is
approaching eight. One of the good news, one of the
good signs is Matt Matt McClain's hit.
Speaker 4 (01:22:17):
Really well and it's funny.
Speaker 3 (01:22:19):
The first the first game after the break in New York,
he looked awful in his first two at bats, and
since then he has hit the ball hard a bunch.
He's gotten a hit in every game in the second half,
he's getting on base like that has to continue.
Speaker 4 (01:22:29):
That has to continue.
Speaker 3 (01:22:32):
The success of this team is gonna hinge a lot
more on players who are here now than one guy
or two guys they may acquire on July thirty first.
That doesn't mean they shouldn't find some help on July
thirty first. And I'm telling you, and I would tell them.
If you're on the outside looking in at the end
of one hundred and sixty two games and you've barely
(01:22:53):
missed it and you did nothing at the deadline, that's
what people are gonna bring up. That's what people are
gonna throw in your face. And that's already gonna fuel
built in skepticism for this franchise from a wornout, exasperated
and impatient fan base. Sixteen minutes after five o'clock five one, three, seven,
(01:23:13):
four nine, fifteen thirty and eight sixty six, seven oh two, three, seven,
seven six are our phone numbers. It's the michelob Ultra
five o'clock Happy Hour on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 2 (01:23:23):

comprehensive care that's so personal it makes your best tomorrow possible.
That's boundless care for better outcomes. Expect more at UCHealth

after US fifty two in New Richmond, looking at a
ten minutes to laid back from Kellogg Avenue. Westbound US
(01:23:52):
fifty at Benton Road. It's another crash and slow traffic
southbound seventy one between two seventy five and Redbank. A
metizell with traffic.

Speaker 3 (01:24:03):
One minutes after five o'clock, this is ESPN fifteen thirty
on my leggar. Ice Cube is with us in studio
in just about ten minutes. And another training camp update
with Tony Pike coming up at about five forty five.
Let's see here, Bob, You're on ESPN fifteen thirty. Good afternoon, Bob.
(01:24:26):
How are you?
Speaker 9 (01:24:28):
Oh, I'm great.
Speaker 6 (01:24:29):
I'm great.
Speaker 9 (01:24:31):
I was able to earlier this week get rid of
Eric Setti, and that was a process that took a
little longer than I congratulations, thank you, thank you, And
we still have miles available. And I think another guy
who probably is going to go is Ryan Helsley. He
(01:24:54):
of course is going to be a free agent at
the end of this year, and I think that might
be a guy who could bring some uh some prospects
or perhaps an outfielder or something like that.
Speaker 3 (01:25:05):
Now, Bob, you're you're you're you're a Cardinals fan. So like,
the Cardinals are a weird team to me because they
they kind of tried to start a rebuild this offseason.
They wanted to trade Nolan Aeronado, and as it's turned out,
they've been They've been okay, They've kind of treaded water
all season. They're a half game behind the Red So, like,
the the average Cardinals fan, what what does he which,
(01:25:27):
you're the average Cardinals fan, what do you want them
to do?
Speaker 9 (01:25:31):
I'm not the average Cardinal fan, though I am. I
am a way about average.
Speaker 4 (01:25:36):
I didn't mean to offend.
Speaker 9 (01:25:38):
You, No, No, that's okay.
Speaker 12 (01:25:40):
What I want him to do is sell, sell, sell, And.
Speaker 9 (01:25:45):
There were a couple of reasons. One, I think I
think one guy who's probably going to go that I've
not heard a whole lot of chatter about is a
large new bar well, you know what, not a not
a bad fan. I mean he's been okay, but he
very much like O'Neil and Dylan Colson, cannot stay healthy,
(01:26:11):
you know, just a guy who every year finds a
way to to miss a lot of games. And and
they have a kid who you probably paid attention to
at Triple A, JJ Weatherhold, who is just wearing the
ball out down there and did the same thing earlier
this year at Double A. And he's another left hander,
(01:26:34):
and they are way heavy right now with left handed bats.
And I think Lars is going somewhere, and if he doesn't,
perhaps Nolan Gorman because what I can see for JJ
is I think if if Gorman doesn't come back, because
he's out right now also injured, if Gorman doesn't come
(01:26:56):
back and pick up right away in a hot bat,
I could see JJ perhaps moving into third base spot
next year.
Speaker 4 (01:27:06):
What about Sonny Gray? What about So what are they
going to do with him?
Speaker 12 (01:27:10):
You know what? I hope they keep Sonny.
Speaker 9 (01:27:12):
I just I absolutely love Sonny Gray.
Speaker 4 (01:27:15):
Has one more year left on his contract, correct he does.
Speaker 9 (01:27:19):
I sold a babble ahead of his MO from Vandy about.
Speaker 12 (01:27:22):
Speaker 9 (01:27:25):
To a lady for one hundred and fifty bucks who
lives in Texas.
Speaker 3 (01:27:29):
Wow, and then correct me if correct me if I'm wrong.
Sonny Gray has a no trade clause. Aeronauto obviously has
one because he exercised it this offseason. So they have
Wilson Contreras as well, So they have a lot of
dudes that would have to sign off on being dealt.
Speaker 9 (01:27:45):
Yeah, they do. I think I think Aeronauto probably at
this point, is ready. You know, they were hoping he'd
have a kind of a big comeback here and it's
not there. And uh ten Trerera's I hope they keep
He's done a great but first and I love the
guy's enthusiasm. In fact, I love that about New Bar
(01:28:06):
But like I say, you just you can't keep them
on the field. So but no, you know what, I
don't think they're far away, but you know, much like
you're talking about with the folks in Cincinnati feeling the
way they feel the folks in Saint Louis. It's only
going to be three years and they've not made the playoffs,
but you think it had been thirty. They they are
(01:28:29):
ready to say goodbye to Mozlac.
Speaker 11 (01:28:31):
And and I just.
Speaker 9 (01:28:34):
Think they need a very very fresh start kind of
like they did this year, but it was nowhere near
the runway that they talked about. Not when not when
you have a guy named Michael McGreevey who's pitched the
majority of the year in Memphis and needed to be
in Saint Louis.
Speaker 12 (01:28:49):
So yeah, it's there.
Speaker 9 (01:28:53):
There's a lot of unhappy folks there, and their attendance
shows that they're they are way down. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:29:00):
No, I mean, if if you go, you typically expect
them to approach three million fans like they're they're not
going to come close to that.
Speaker 4 (01:29:05):
Best fans in baseball have decided they've had enough.
Speaker 9 (01:29:09):
Oh yeah, yeah, and you know, good for them, and
uh and the thing that makes it difficult for them
or the Blues are really doing great things.
Speaker 4 (01:29:18):
Yeah, well Jimmy snugger.
Speaker 9 (01:29:20):
Rud right, No, you are really impressing me. You remembered, Yes,
Jimmy snugger Rude and JJ Weatherholt. Those are my two, uh,
my two new guys now that I really have to follow.
So but no, they uh and actually this is the
(01:29:40):
last year for their their general manager as well right, and.
Speaker 3 (01:29:43):
Uh and then they just they just blew out their
radio guide to which made a lot of people in
my industry.
Speaker 9 (01:29:48):
Man, I was I was just going to say that though.
It really shocked me. I grew up listening to his
bad who was just one of the great hockey announcers
of all time. And John Kelly has been there over
twenty years and done a fabulous job. But they've I
think there are four other teams or they are the
(01:30:08):
fourth team that have combined the radio and TV together. Yeah,
and yeah, it's a shame because he was great. They
did have Darren Tang there as well. Darren left two
years ago back to Chicago, but those two together were
just fabulous. And I'm gonna miss John Kelly.
Speaker 12 (01:30:28):
But you know, I.
Speaker 9 (01:30:30):
Guess, I guess the thing. The thing, you know is
as much as you don't want it, sometimes things have
to change.
Speaker 3 (01:30:37):
So I've always thought it would be full, it'd be
fun to work at KMOX. In these last ten minutes,
I kind of felt like I have. So it's been fun.
Speaker 9 (01:30:44):
Bob.
Speaker 4 (01:30:45):
I got to run though.
Speaker 9 (01:30:45):
Thank you, my pleasure, mon, thank you.
Speaker 4 (01:30:48):
We have a good weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:30:49):
It's twenty eight minutes after five KMOX is a legendary
Saint Louis radio station, and no, I don't want to
work there. It's also not an iHeart rate station, so
I'll probably get suspended for mentioning it. Ice Cubes gonna
join us in studio next.
Speaker 2 (01:31:08):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (01:31:11):

you'll find comprehensive care that's so personal it makes your

more at UCHealth dot com. He's found two seventy five

(01:31:34):

Degar left today's workout, wasn't karted off, walked off into

Speaker 4 (01:32:05):
No practice tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:32:06):
They practice again on Sunday eighty dorn Window, Tony and
Mode training Camp show will be Monday morning from Bengals

Martinez and Zach Lttel on the hill, starting line up quickly. Tonight,
Friedel McLain, Elie de la Cruz, Hayesen left, Lux's Dhing
(01:32:26):
steers at first, Stevenson catches Benson and Wright.
Speaker 4 (01:32:29):
Noel A. Marte is playing third base.
Speaker 3 (01:32:33):
Florence takes on the Washington wild Things on the road tonight,
and FC Cincinnati headed to Miami to take on Miami.
Because that's why you would go to Miami to play
Miami if you're a soccer team. Lanel Messi ain't gonna
play suspended because he skipped the MLS All Star Game.
Also this weekend, the Big Three is in town professional
three on three basketball. We had Jordan Crawford on the
(01:32:55):
show yesterday. The founder of the league is a hip
hop and entered tam an Icon and he's becoming a
basketball icon ice cube with us in studio. It is
awesome to have you. Welcome to Cincinnati. Uh, you guys
are here for the second straight year. How do you
pick the cities you guys visit? Oh, you know, we
(01:33:16):
want to go to cities where you know, we get
the most love. Now that we were you know, selling franchises,
we're gonna be pretty much planned in most of those cities. Chicago, Detroit, La, Miami, Boston,
the d M, V H and H, Dallas and so
(01:33:41):
we all you know, every year we're gonna pick a
spot that's not on the that's not on the list,
a little.
Speaker 4 (01:33:48):
Off the beaten path.
Speaker 13 (01:33:49):
But it's great because we got a great relationship with
P and G and they've been to our sponsor for
a couple of years and you know, it's it's been
awesome to be able to come during their music festival
and you know celebrate.
Speaker 3 (01:34:04):
Yeah, it's a fun weekend downtown. The first Big Three
event I ever attended was in Lexington. Oh yeah, and
so the league has evolved, right, but you know you
had Jamar Johnson, a UC guy, Kenyan Martin so I
had to go see those guys. It's I didn't know
what to expect, and I know the league itself has evolved,
but it was a really fun day of basketball, very
family friendly.
Speaker 11 (01:34:24):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (01:34:24):
And then I went last year and the basketball is better. Yes.
Speaker 3 (01:34:28):
So for those who haven't been to a Big Three event,
who are listening to us right now, tell folks what
happens tomorrow.
Speaker 13 (01:34:34):
Oh man, you know, four games for the price of
one we got we got six games, I mean six
teams and that's three and two, so you know, some
gotta give.
Speaker 4 (01:34:45):
We got it.
Speaker 13 (01:34:46):
We got a couple of three and two teams playing
each other, right, so somebody gonna be four and two,
somebody gonna be three and three. We got shake this up.
Great matchups. You know, got Dwight Howard. You know he's
with the LA squad. They're going against Detroit. Both teams
you know, are very good, and Detroit used to have
(01:35:09):
Joe Johnson. He got hurt unfortunately, but you know they
brought in some reinforcements that's pretty good, and just some
great matchups. You know, you gotta look at that that
Chicago Boston matchup too, because both of those teams are great.
Speaker 3 (01:35:27):
What I like about the caliber play is awesome. You
get a Hall of Famer in Dwight Howard, but there's
a physicality that the first time I watched the Big
Three just on television, I wasn't totally expecting. I watched
Jordan Crawford and Lan Stevenson to you know, Cincinnati Versus.
I watched them fight a couple of weeks ago. Yeah,
they got into it.
Speaker 13 (01:35:49):
I do not encourage fighting, you know, we do allow
trash talking, but we don't want them to fight, right,
They don't really want to fight. They want to wrestle
a little bit. Uh Yeah, Jordan Crawford stuck his finger
in Lance nose.
Speaker 6 (01:36:04):
I think.
Speaker 13 (01:36:05):
I think that's a fight in any league, that even
Little League. That goes back fifteen years. Jordan Crawford was
with us yesterday. Yeah, so those two Lance Stevenson at
you see Jordan Crawford Xavier every year Skyline Chili Crosstown shootout.
Speaker 3 (01:36:18):
Those two guys got in each other's faces. Then that's
fifteen years ago. So when I saw that, it warmed
my heart.
Speaker 4 (01:36:24):
To a degree to see those two guys still in
each other's faces.
Speaker 13 (01:36:27):
Hey, these are two competitors, you know, they some guys
play for the glitz, the glamour to check and some
guys play because they love a game. And what's good
about the Big Three? Most of those guys in there
to a t loved the game to the point where
a lot of them guys, you know, they'll play for free,
(01:36:48):
you know what I mean, But they just want to
ball against the best, and so it's just great to
get him back into the arena, back in front of
their fans, back on TV. Yeah, because they've honed their
skills to a level that is, uh is magical to watch.
(01:37:08):
You know, they got every trick of the trade man
and they use it on each other to get a bucket,
and it's fun to.
Speaker 3 (01:37:14):
Watch one o'clock tomorrow. Get tickets at Big three dot
com slash tickets. How how do you get because you've
had you have active players and then you have icons
like George Gervin. I'm a huge New York Knicks fan.
We had Charles Oakley on our show last year, which
I mean the thirteen year old version of me. I'm
not sure who's geeking out more over having Charles Oakley
(01:37:36):
last year or you. But how do you get people
to come to the league. Do they call you, do
you reach out? Do you recruit?
Speaker 4 (01:37:42):
How does it work?
Speaker 13 (01:37:44):
A little of both? You know, our players, our coaches,
they reach out to players. We got you know, a
great basketball operations staff that reach out. You know, I'll
reach out. I think I'm one of the best recruiters.
Speaker 4 (01:37:59):
In the minute, you know. So hey, sweet, sweet, that's
good to know.
Speaker 13 (01:38:05):
And so, you know, it's just really about the league
speaks for itself at this point when you got people
like doctor J. You got people like Clyde Drexler, Gary Payton,
George Gervin, Royalty. Yeah, they've been part of this league
for nine years.
Speaker 4 (01:38:25):
Can you believe it?
Speaker 13 (01:38:26):
Yeah, So that's the proof in the putting. They wouldn't
be around if it wasn't great. And so other players
see that. Other players see that some players been in
our league six seven years, and so they see that
it's a good thing and that you know that they're
having fun and they're reinventing their you know, kind of
(01:38:48):
reinventing their brands, you know, going off to do other things, commercials, podcasts,
being called to do broadcast work.
Speaker 11 (01:38:58):
You know.
Speaker 13 (01:38:58):
So the league you know, definitely ups your profile and
they can do other things off of the shine that
we give them.
Speaker 3 (01:39:07):
Yeah, and you don't you don't get on CBS if
the product isn't good at all. So you know tomorrow
one o'clock, if you can't be there downtown, your games
are on CBS. Yes, deal with Vice as well, but
you talk about like putting a league over getting in
on our broadcast network like that and staying on there.
Speaker 13 (01:39:25):
It has to be huge, man. That's one of the
biggest you know, grabs in the league with CBS. You know,
they loved us since.
Speaker 6 (01:39:34):
We were on Fox.
Speaker 13 (01:39:35):
We started off on Fox the first two years FS one.
Then we went to UH to Big Fox for a
few games and uh, CBS wanted us. They was going
through some some some turnover and so after our Fox
deal was over, we was able to go on over
to CBS and Nate. You know, they got the best crew.
(01:39:57):
We get the guys who do the Super Bowl to
shoot the Big Three, because it's either you want to
shoot Big Three, you want to shoot golf. Most of
them done had their fair share of golf, so they
want to come and work on some basketball. So we
get the best of the best over there at CBS
and we're you know, proud and happy to be there.
Speaker 3 (01:40:19):
You uh, you go from from town to town for
the Big Three. I can't imagine how you perform this
morning in Fountain Square. You're still It was a prompt too,
Yeah I was. I was doing a radio interview. They
start playing a good day. I had a mic in
my hand. What I'm supposed to do, you know, but
jump up and perform?
Speaker 11 (01:40:36):
Man?
Speaker 4 (01:40:37):
Cincinnati Music Fest? Could I see you? I'm going tomorrow night.
Could I see you tomorrow night?
Speaker 8 (01:40:44):
You will?
Speaker 13 (01:40:44):
You will not see me tomorrow and now you will
see me tomorrow in the daytime if you come to the.
Speaker 3 (01:40:49):
Big Yes, all right, very but I mean you're incredibly busy,
very busy. Yeah yeah, I mean how do you divide
your time between everything you're involved in?
Speaker 13 (01:40:59):
Well, well, you know, it's not just me. I got
a great team of people who, you know, we coordinate
and execute. You know, we coordinate and execute. That's all
that's our thing. And they're great, you know, as good
as I am. They're just as good behind the scenes.
Are you you still play? I mean no, I retire, man,
(01:41:21):
You did just see my retirement. I was at the podium.
You just see me on ESPN at the podium, retiring
as I never scored another triple double game.
Speaker 4 (01:41:31):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 3 (01:41:32):
If you came over my house, I gotta hoop my driveway,
Like could you would beat me? I'm sure, but you
still play like at all totally.
Speaker 6 (01:41:43):
I mean, I shoot, but I don't. I don't.
Speaker 13 (01:41:45):
I'm not gonna play anybody to like try to beat
them or they them try to beat me. I'm done.
You know why, I've seen a lot of my friends
tear you know, achilles achilles and there I'm like, man,
I'm not gonna be an amateur with a pro injury.
(01:42:05):
You know you ain't gonna see ice cube crutches saying
cue what happened? I was playing basketball. Everybody gonna look
at me like I'm crazy. But then you at least
have a story, Like I got a lot of stories, man,
you know I got it. I'll tell some NWA stories
to keep the party going. I don't need to, you know,
pop my achilles. But like if I pop my achilles,
(01:42:26):
it's like going down the steps. Like if you hurt
yourself playing sports, it's better than like how a guy
like me would hurt himself. Hey man, hey, look, I
don't think it's no, it's no honor in it at all,
you know. But yeah, you could tweak a back muscle
pulling pulling up some socks nowadays, and I have done that.
Speaker 3 (01:42:46):
How uh obviously here this weekend. Big Three came to
Cincinnati last year. Is our city one that you have
spent a lot of time in.
Speaker 13 (01:42:54):
Not a whole lot. I remember getting chased out of
the city when we was with n w A. You know,
they first they tried to prevent us from coming. I
had to meet with the mayor. Luckily he was an
ex Bengal middle linebacker. Yeah, city council yeah, yeah, so
so he was cool. He let us perform and and
(01:43:19):
then after the show, they they wanted us. They wanted
us bad.
Speaker 9 (01:43:24):
And uh.
Speaker 13 (01:43:25):
I remember running out the arena like I'm outside. Everybody's
outside and some girls were driving by. They couldn't believe
I was outside of the concert by myself, nobody else
with you, nobody with me. I just ran out the
side because they was looking for us. So I'm dolo
(01:43:45):
out there and they they said, uh, what you doing?
We saw you on stage and I'm like, what They're
chasing me?
Speaker 9 (01:43:54):
And uh.
Speaker 13 (01:43:56):
They they put me in their car and and they
drove me over the bridge to Kentucky. Why, I'm like,
they're not chasing me, Like it's not high speed pursuit.
You know, they was just looking for me. They ended
up dropping me off at the hotel. All the other
guys got tickets or citations for obscenity laws.
Speaker 4 (01:44:17):
And except me. And they were so mad at me
because I got away.
Speaker 9 (01:44:21):
Where was you?
Speaker 6 (01:44:22):
Where was you?
Speaker 13 (01:44:23):
We was looking for you. You're smart, I'm laughing. Yeah, like, man,
I'm not going I'm not coming back to the Ohio court. Yeah,
you know, you guys can get on the plane you
were in. You hear a lot from people like my age.
So like I was thirteen and I had to ask
my mom's friend Joanne to go to Sam Goodie to
(01:44:43):
buy your America's Most Wanted cassette, right because.
Speaker 3 (01:44:46):
They wouldn't seal the kids. You hear from a lot
of people like that now, right, Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 13 (01:44:50):
You know, we're the first group that they put the
parental advisory sticker on. And I remember, I remember when
they were stickers. I remember our records were printed and
Bryan Turner came to us and said, we gotta put
a sticker on or the pm r C is gonna
Parents Music Resource Committee, whatever is gonna it is gonna,
(01:45:17):
you know, try to get this record shut down in
Congress and take it to that point. And then we
was like, man, he and the guy designed the sticker,
like the guy from his office designed the sticker and
put it on there. And he was so mad that
he had to pay for all those stickers the next record.
(01:45:38):
He said, we're gonna bake this into the cover, man,
because I don't want to buy all these stickers.
Speaker 4 (01:45:42):
Used to be able to peel it off. You used
to be able to peel it off.
Speaker 6 (01:45:45):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (01:45:45):
So yeah, that's the story of that.
Speaker 3 (01:45:48):

pretty Yes, it's very cool.
Speaker 13 (01:46:15):
You know, they've been great to us, and you know,
we hope to really expand the relationship we got, you know,
from Swiftford to Bevil, you know. So we're doing some
good things with them. The Nancy leave them in courts,
she does charity courts, done about fifty or sixty these
(01:46:37):
charity courts and you know, underprivileged neighborhoods most of the time.

Speaker 3 (01:48:20):
One More and check in with Tony Pike on the
Race and Claire Roofing Hotline. Tony has been at Bengals
training camp all day long. I know one of the
answers is today's training camp winner Jermaine Burton, But you
and I had a conversation this morning about Bengals X
factors heading into the season, run through them.
Speaker 11 (01:48:38):
For me, Yeah, I think Jermaine Burton is clearly one
of them for every reason that we've discussed. You look
at the guard position for the Cincinnati Bengals, and I
say X factor because if you're thinking of one way
that this season derails, well, then that would be an
injury to Joe Burrow because he's not being protected. The
guard spot has to be an X factor for this team.
(01:49:00):
We talked about Evan McPherson, who wasn't an X factor
last year. He has been. If you look at that
playoff run, the Super Bowl run, he was males, he
was lights out. He was an X factor, a weapon
for this Bengals team. I have him as one of
the X factors. I know you talked about a guy
in the secondary that I think a lot of people
will agree with. Cam Taylor Britt is an X factor
(01:49:22):
for this team because at one point you thought he
had star power to be a number one and on
another sense, he was bench last year. So whis Cam
Taylor Britt? Are you going to get? What does the
star power look like there? And I think a guy
in Oron Burks is interesting because if Aaron Burks is
the Oron Burks that played in the playoffs for the
Philadelphia Phillies last year and grated out so well, what
a weapon he is alongside of Logan Wilson. And then
(01:49:46):
you also have Demetrius Knight, a rookie that they drafted
at today signed Oron Burke. So you know, from an
X factor standpoint, we know what Jamar Chasen t Higgins
and Joe Burrow are. We know what Gasicki can be,
we know what Chase Brown can be. But some of
those players that if their game picks up, then this
team is going to surpass some of the levels that
(01:50:06):
maybe people even have expected them to get to.
Speaker 3 (01:50:09):
Going into training camp, we have talked a lot about
differences from previous years versus this year. One thing that
has stood out to me in the first three practices
has been their length.
Speaker 11 (01:50:20):
Yeah, I mean this is you remember your past. We
do these training camp reports and an hour and twenty
minutes on the field, they're done, They're moving on. It
felt like a country club atmosphere. I go back earlier
in the week, Charlie Goldsmith looked at one of the
practices and said from a non petted practice standpoint, he
thought it was the most physical practice he had seen
in covering the Bengals. They've been out there nearly two
hours every single day. We've yet to see anyone take
(01:50:43):
a VET day a day off this team. It feels
like that from the moment Joe Burrow spoke after practice won,
he was setting a tone, he was making a statement,
and I think that's reverberated through the team. This team
knows that they can't start slow again. They know how
a slow start last year hurt them when you look
at this year. So I look at all those factors together,
(01:51:04):
I don't think you're going to see many VET days,
and I think you're going to see the urgency and
the intensity continue to pick up. From a practice standpoint
and an overall length standpoint.
Speaker 3 (01:51:12):
