One more check in with Tony Pike, who has been
at Bengals training camp all day long. We talked last
hour about what a good day it was for the
defense and what we were watching from the secondary in
red zone, from the defensive line, and eleven on Eleven's
the problem is the success of the defensive line came
at the expense of the offensive line, and unfortunately, Tony,

that has been a recurring theme now for years.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yeah, and now a recurring theme for a couple of
straight padded practices that we've been down there for. And
I think it is fair to say there's a new
offensive line coach as well, So there's a new scheme
going in, there's a new playbook, there's a new style.
I thought you saw a little bit today. They're rotating
some guys in and Marius Mems didn't play the last
two or three team drill so they could get other
guys work at right tackle. But you know, for the

most part, it was unclean pockets for Joe Burrow and
Jake Browning today and that is a theme we've seen
for years. It's something that Joe Burrow has obviously had
to navigate and he's done a magnificent job in navigating it.
But at some point you cannot rely on Joe Burrow
just to be superman. You have to allow him to

(01:08):
get a clean pocket. You have to allow him to
utilize these weapons. They couldn't get anything going. And again,
you're not tackling. I understand it's only sudd. You weren't
able to get much going with Chase Brown on the
ground today, Jamar Chase was relatively quiet. T Higgins made
a couple of good plays over the middle. But this offense,
it has all the weapons to be the best offense

(01:30):
in the game of football. They've got to find different
ways to protect. And what I think is interesting, and
we discussed it a little bit earlier, is there a
backup plan in place? Has this organization gone into this
camp and said, hey, here's our cutoff date. If we
don't think we have it, then we've got to go
find it by this date, because they should have a

(01:53):
plan be in place if things don't improve, you know,
between mal and the first preseason game next y our very.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Well said, and I think that's the problem, right. It's
it's not so much that they had a bad day,
it's that a unit that hasn't been good in years.
Had a bad day.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yep. It's it's more of the same. It's the unfortunate
nature of every training camp. I mean, we talked last
year Mo and we tried to spin it like, man,
the defense is wreaking havoc for lu Ana Arumo in
training camp, what's that mean for them? And then they
went out and they were one of the worst defenses
in the NFL today. Trey Hendrickson was there, but he's

(02:32):
still not rushing the passer. Logan Wilson took the day off.
You've got Orin Berks and Demetrius Knight we're playing linebacker.
You've got young guys in on the defensive line, and
for the most part, the defense I thought had their
way with the Bengals up front. I think that's a problem.
