Speaker 1 (00:00):
On the West end of Cincinnati. I f C Cincinnati
begins play in the League's Cup competition, hosting Monterrey. That
match is going to start at seven o'clock and on
the sideline, part of Apple TV's and LS season pass uh.
Longtime soccer commentator Michela a Giannone, who is going to
be on the call from the sideline tomorrow. It's awesome

(00:21):
to have you, mkellay.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
How are you hey? Thank you, thank you for having me.
Everything's great. Just go to Cincinnati, very excited for tomorrow.
Welcome to town.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Is this the first time you've been here?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
No, not at all. I've been here plenty of times
with Major League Soccer for x Cincincinnati and also with
the USN and T the national team. So good time
since Cincinnati before.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Good times all right, well, hopefully a good time for
the Orange Blue tomorrow. Let's talk about the League's Cup.
A different format this year. Do we like it?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Teams like it? We just started yesterday, But on paper,
teams like it, especially the Mexican teams because for some
of them it involves less traveling. We gotta remember the tournament.
There's a third edition of the tournament and the first
two editions. The whole tournament, it's been played on US soil,
on MLS being the host. So they changed the format

(01:13):
this year to first secure more matches between Legamax teams
and Major League Soccer teams. Their matches between the two
leads guaranteed until the quarterfinals, so that's exciting. And the
second part is that they gave some of the top
teams in Mexico the opportunity to pick a city so
they can play as a host team to Major League

(01:37):
Soccer teams. For example, Monterey picked Cincinnati, so Monterrey's playing
older games quote unquote home at Cincinnati at TQL. So
the format on paper looks better. We'll see. We just
started yesterday, but for now, teams are happy with it.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Yeah. I think it's going to be interesting to see
how this unfolds. It's interesting from an FC Cincinnati perspective.
It's a little bit of a break from MLS regular
season play. They have stormed to the top of the
supporter shield race, played very very well. How do you
break down their chances in this competition.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
I mean, they're one of the favorites. The thing is
that on the new format, you gotta win the first
game if you don't get the three points or at
least the two points. Now we gotta we gotta tell
people that there are no ties on this tournament. There's
there's always a winner on every match. So if there's
a tie after the ninety minutes, they're gonna there go
to p ks. So normally in soccer, if you win

(02:32):
on the ninety minutes, you get three points. If and
similar to hockey and forget ifam mistaken, here it's if
there's a tie and they go to p k's, each
team gets a point and then the third point gets
a water to the team that wins on the p K.
That's what happens for example last night between Columbus and
and Toluca. So given the format, so there's eighteen MLS teams,

(02:54):
eighteen League m X teams, but only four of eighteen
a two quarterfinals of each league, so winning the first
game it's crucial. So it's very important for Cincinnati to
get the three points tomorrow night. The thing is they're
playing against one of the favorites to win this tournament,
which is Monterey, who is obviously one of the biggest

(03:15):
teams in Mexico.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
So the match up in particular, Monterey is very good.
Where do they present the biggest problem for f C Cincinnati.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
I mean up front, there are two teams that are
very similar. They play with three center backs with two
players on the wings. In Cincinnati the baste of Yeling
on the right side and look at Regiano on the
left fight Monterey has a very similar tactical system with

(03:45):
a great number ten like Sergio Canales the players in Spain,
like Cincinnati has Evander, now they have a great number
nine Zebra who's now he's an Argentinian, but he's now
doing all the paperwork to switch to Mexico and play
for the Mexican national team. So that tells you the
quality of the players. Sadly, Cincinnati is still missing their
number nine, which is Kevin Denky. And talking about talking

(04:07):
with Patnuna yesterday, he said, we know a Monterey is
very offensive, but given that offensive play, they tend to
give space in the backline, and we're gonna try to
use our speed and our quality with Evander, with the Regiana,
with Serrio Santos tomorrow, who's gonna start in place of
k Camara. They're gonna try to use se Jo Santo's
speed and Oregano on the left, in Jelly on the

(04:29):
right to try to occupy those spaces and herd Monterey.
But on the other side, it's the same thing for Cincinnati.
Monterey is very good on the attacking system in Cincinnati,
when when they attack, they're gonna leave spaces. So I
think it's a very even game.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
I can't wait. Should be a fun match tomorrow, a
great competition. I love everything I've heard about the new format.
I'm excited to see how it unfolds in practice, and
I can't take enough for the time. Man, thanks so.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Much, absolutely, thank you, and tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
There should be a lot of fun Tomorrow night, seven o'clock.
Michaela Giannone on the call on the sideline tomorrow. MLS
Season Pass Apple tv FC Cincinnati hosting Moderay tomorrow at
seven o'clock
