Speaker 1 (00:00):
ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Before this is ESPN fifteen thirty Moego Broadcasting. Thanks for
our friends at Ady Door and Window. From Bengals training camp.
The team going through the first of two practices this
week before Saturday's preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts, a
game you'll hear live on ESPN fifteen thirty. Weaving his
way through I guess about a quarter of the league.

(00:25):
Justin from Denver, making one of his final training camp stops.
The great NFL insider Jordan Schultz is with us. What
is up? Oh?

Speaker 3 (00:32):
What a pleasure this is, big man. No, it's an
absolute pleasure to be here.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
I'm thrill.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
I saw you in the corner of my eye, said,
you know what, I gotta go say what up to
my man?

Speaker 1 (00:40):
It's good to have you. I appreciate it. Great to
be here.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
My first time in Cincinnati, actually, first time ever. You've
never been here before, never never been to Cincinnati. I
was telling you my mom is from Lima, yeah road,
so I got some Ohio connects, but no first time
in Cinci.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Wow, yeah, very good.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
I mean, you know, it's a different setup. We've been
going around camps and this is an interesting setup, but
I like it because it's downtown Cincinnati and it's all
in one spot.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Yeah, you know, it's pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
You know, those of us who grew up watching teams
travel away, you know they were in Wilmington, Ohio. I
was a Canada, Georgetown, Kentucky. I know the players like
it more. And obviously that the portion of training camp
where fans could be here is coming gone. But it's
when fans are here and they can go somewhere to
eat downtown and part close by. It's it's awesome.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Yeah, no, it's awesome. So yeah, I'm thrilled to be here.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
You chasing like any Trey Hendrickson news for me, get
anything new there?

Speaker 3 (01:31):
No, I got nothing new, entree. I wish I did,
trust me, I wish I did. But you know, I
reported yesterday the Dalton Rising in yeah, a visit. Yeah,
and the visit went well, and I think they'll continue
to have conversations. He's got some other teams on him
as well. I think I saw that the guard went down.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
For the year, right Courtell Hollis.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, and he started forty eight games, so
that that hurts as well. But I know Cincinnati has
been looking for some interior offensive line depth, and obviously
who started something like seventy games could fit. Obviously, money talks.
Sure at this time of the year, a lot of
veterans like to make sure they get the absolute best
deal and best spot. But from all intense purposes, it

(02:13):
went really well. And if I'm a Bengals fan, I'd
like to see him here.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
I think we hope that it's the same pattern as
the Noah fan thing right where he comes in doesn't sign,
but it's like, all right, you know they're gonna keep talking.
He's gonna go check out some situations elsewhere. I don't
know that there was a better one for a guy
like Noah Fan at tight end. Should I feel the
same way about Daltoneiser guard?

Speaker 1 (02:34):
Well?

Speaker 3 (02:35):
The thing about Noah that was great with this system,
and this is one of the reasons I think both
sides were so excited about it was it allows you
to play Mike as like a big slot guy, right,
and then Noah can be your more traditional tight end,
which I think both sides really liked.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
With Dalton.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
You know, his versatility, his calling card has always been toughness.
He's like a real tough, kind of maller type of player.
Has always been productive as a run blocker. Last year,
per Pff did not give up a sack, which I
think is a big bonus. And obviously we saw against
Washington that the offensive line is still, you know, could

(03:13):
use some interior help. So, you know, I don't know
if any if it's perfect, but it's it's a pretty
good one.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
It's not bad, especially given the fact that the Lucas
Patrick thing to this point, at least it's only training camp,
hasn't worked out. Yeah, and I think to a degree
you can credit them for going, okay, we got to
try something else. At the same time, why are we
still looking for solutions in mid August?

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Right?

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Well, and so in terms of the draft, remind me
what did they draft off It's a line.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Dylan Fairchild, third round er, who's been fine. I think,
you know, it's gonna be a starter. I think everybody's
pretty happy with him. But I think a lot of
us when the off season started, we expected maybe two
free agents at guard, maybe a swing tackle, and they
only signed.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
One, right, and it hasn't worked out. It hasn't worked out.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
No, Yeah, yeah, I think you know, I'm gonna speak
with uh I think Orlando today and it sounds like
he's had a good camp.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah. Yeah, So so the edges are okay.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
The edges are fine. Mass you know.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
There's the young guy who has a lot of upside.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
And I think Orlando Brown, you know what he is.
Last year, all the pressure came up the middle, and
in the two preseason games, especially on Monday Night, again
the pressure came up.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
There's definitely a sense around the league that it has
been for the last few weeks that the Bengals are
looking for interior offensive line. You know, Reisner is probably
more expensive than some of the other guys. It's not
like he's gonna cost you four million, but he's not
a VSP guy either, So he's got to be somewhere
in between.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
The Hendrickson stuff. Right. So they're listening to offers now,
which is you know, that's all well and good. I
think a lot of us the the immediate reaction was, what,
you couldn't have done that? And I know they listened,
But if you were going to trade him, you trade
him in March or April, yeah, August.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Yeah, Yeah, there's you probably have imagine Bengals fans have
been monitoring the situation as closely as they've moderored anything.
And with tre it's tough because I think both sides
are really dug in.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
When that happens, and when both sides feel like they're
absolutely right they're correct, it's very hard to move. And
I think Trey, also because of his production, obviously leading
the league in sacks, feels like, Okay, this is my
last paycheck or my last huge opportunity to get paid.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
And a lot of has been made about the being.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Thirty, but pass rushers traditionally don't necessarily fall off a
cliff at thirty. It's the same with receivers. There's a
lot of research that tells us now that you can
have really good seasons into year thirty two, thirty three,
and Trey has been very durable. If I'm a Bengals fan,
you know, I can't think of a guy who.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Is more deserving at this point.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
And I know Joe has made it very clear as
well that you know he wanted obviously Gaseki back, he
wanted the two receivers back. I think this is the
last piece of the puzzle, and if Cincinnati wants to
have the type of year they think they can have,
which is potentially an AFC contender. They need Trey there.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
I think for a lot of folks, there's a sense
of inevitability. Joe even mentioned this on Monday night. Look
we've got a track record. He mentioned his own deal
got announced the night of the season opener, right uh
aj Green many years ago signed his contractors. He's walking
to the bus to get on the plane to go
to Oakland. So should should I still feel that way?
Like there's still some time it will get done. They

(06:20):
just gotta the pots and eyes and cross some te's.
Is that no a good way of looking at it?
It's it's what it's been. The structure.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
I think parts of the deal have been good, but
the but the structure has been a has been a
big sticking point for Trey. If you look at the
other two big contract disputes, Washington with Terry McLaurin and
obviously Dallas with dak which or with Micah which is
more comparable because of the pass rusher, you know both.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
Of those, Both of those sides are really dug in
as well.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
And I was asked earlier today to forecast those three
and it's it's really hard to do.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
I I don't know.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
If I would love to be able to tell you, MO,
sit here two weeks before the opener and tell you
that Henderson's gonna get done.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
I just I can't do it.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, Uh should we view his you know, he has
stated all along no intention of playing on his current deal.
Right with most of these holdouts, I just I default
to the fact that they're not going to turn down
the game check right, nine hundred K if he misses
the first game against Cleveland, should I still do that?

Speaker 3 (07:14):
I wouldn't necessarily do that, because, like I was saying earlier,
with Trey, he he's like a really when he's he's
the type of guy from what I understand that when
he has condiction, he sticks to it in a major,
major way. And I go back to I think it
was the first time he spoke publicly out here. It
was about a month a couple months ago. Yeah, and
he said that, and I would I would hold him

(07:37):
to it.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
Yeah, he's a different type dude.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
I think that day when he did that, if anything else,
that should have been the takeaway right right, this is
this is a different type of fat How many camps.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Have you been to this year?

Speaker 3 (07:47):
So we've done. We just said Denver looks really good,
right understandably, So yeah, Jets, Giants, obviously, Cincinnati. I think
we got Jacksonville, Indianapolis, US, but Washington, so yeah, a
good amount.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
And this is maybe the last one.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
I think this is the last one potentially. Yeah, And
and you know, every here's the thing about training campus.
Everyone believes that they have a great team. Everyone will
tell you how great their fifth round rookie, the UDA
that's gonna it's gonna take the league by storm. And
then you know, my history will tell you that most
of those guys aren't gonna have the type of impact,

(08:28):
certainly not right away. But uh, I tell you, if
I'm a Bengals fan, the players, I'm probably most excited
about young guys. Chase Brown, I think super explosive, healthy.
I'm really excited to see Yoshavas. I think this is
a massive opportunity for him. And then you mentioned Mims earlier.
I feel like there's a level, or multiple levels for

(08:51):
him to get to. When he was coming out, he
was talked about as this athletic specimen who the upside
was enormous and I if I'm a Bengals fan, I
really really want to see it this year, and I
think you will.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
But you know what I noticed, though, is you did
not mention one defensive player, and that's a problem.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
I probably should have. Who are Bengals fans most excited
about defensive?

Speaker 2 (09:11):
The guy that I'm excited for is Shamar Stewart. Yeah,
because I give that dude a lot of credit. All
he did for months was talking about his contract. He
gets on the field and he he balls out.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
Yeah. No, I would actually agree with that as well.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
And with Shamar, you know, obviously didn't have necessarily the
production in college, but the upside, the character both elite
and then also the fact that you know he didn't
have the reps and then, like you said, balled out.
His upside was as high as anyone in the draft. Yet,
maybe the best combine I've ever seen. And he's a
really interesting kid, and I think his work ethic from

(09:44):
everything I've been told, has been awesome. I know it's early,
but that's that's what you need. And obviously, considering we
don't know what's gonnappen with Trey, you're gonna need that
pass rusher.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
So I'm very excited about to our studient.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
You've got to run. Can't thank you enough. My pleasure,
enjoy your time in Cincinnati.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
Awesome to meet him O first, my pleasure. Thank you
so much, the great Jordan Schultz.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
