Having goods.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
Training came TONI and to move Football show is there,
bringing you the Orange and Black like never before, tomorrow
at ten am on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home
of US Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
It's gonna be a busy week for us, that's right.
What's up mullegor ESPN fifteen thirty. Thanks for listening. My
thanks to sham Brenda for pinch hitting last Thursday and
Friday last week. And you know what the good news is,
we got the Tony Mbout training Camp show tomorrow, Wednesday
and Friday. And on top of that, I'm here every
(00:35):
day this week on this show. Load management season essentially over,
essentially one more day next week on Tuesday. A show
preview is available on Twitter at mullegar. Thanks to Emery
Federal Credit Union, your credit union with Hart since nineteen
(00:56):
thirty nine. Go to EMORYFCU dot org. By the way,
the Emory Federal Credit un Golf outing is a week
from today at four Bridges and I think you could
still sign up at EMORYFCU dot org. Proceeds from that
event benefit Cincinnati children's charities. I am and maybe I'm
in the minority here. I know it's been a few
days since the Bengals played a preseason game. I'll admit
(01:19):
to being frustrated, and maybe more frustrated than I should be.
I'll see if you share my frustration. Coming up here
in just a bit, Tony is gonna join us again
three forty five four forty five, five forty five hourly
training camp reports. Bengals not practicing today. They are back
tomorrow for a morning workout again. We'll be there with
the Tony and Mode Training Camp show at ten am.
(01:42):
I'll begin, though, with this. The Reds road trip ended
yesterday with a resounding, high scoring twenty two run. Wasn't
a twenty two run victory, though the Reds have had
one of those this year, but it was a victory
in which the two teams, Reds and Pirates, combined for
twenty two runs. The Reds badly needed a win yesterday.
They get over the Pirates and they salvage a split
(02:03):
in their four game series. If ever a road trip
were a microcosm of a season, it was the one.
The Reds just completed. Win two, lose three, win two,
win two, and you feel like this team's about to
take off. Lose the next three, and it feels like
the season is about to spiral down the drain. Win
(02:23):
the next two and combine that with the continued free
fall of the New York Mets and game on game
and a half out of the last wildcard spot. Reds
are home for a three game series with the Phillies
that starts tonight. This is a home stand that is
going to see the Reds take on two teams who
currently lead their divisions, two teams who have the two
best records in all of Baseball, Phillies and the Milwaukee Brewers,
(02:48):
who have won nine consecutive games and helped out the
Reds with a come from behind, walk off win over
the Mets yesterday. They exploded yesterday, which was and they
had a winning road trip, which is good, right. It's
hard to win on the road now, I guess you
could argue that after you win your first two at
(03:10):
Wrigley Field and you know you're gonna get four in
Pittsburgh against the Pirates, who have good starting pitching but
are not top to bottom a very good team, you
should do better than simply go four and three. That said,
on Saturday morning, after the Reds let a game get
away on Friday that I think we're gonna circle and
keep in the back of our minds for the rest
(03:32):
of the year. A four and three road trip sounded
damn good. They get it. With the fourteen run output yesterday,
pretty much everybody in the starting lineup hit. Miguel Andrew
harr had a big day forty three games to go,
game and a half out. Hunter Green is back this week.
It's gonna pitch against the Phillies on Wednesday, so he
(03:52):
would be due to make anywhere between eight and nine starts.
We'll see what that means for Chase Burns and Nick Martinez.
Hunter Green is back. Hudter Green is supposed to be
this team staff face. Hutter Green. It's been over two
months since he's last pitched for the Reds. Your guess
is as good as mine as to not so much
how good he's gonna be. But is he gonna stay
(04:13):
healthy enough to make every single one of those starts?
We will see. The last time he came off the
injured list, it was abundantly clear he wasn't quite yet
ready for what this team needed of him. And that
was back in May. How about now, during a playoff
race over the next forty three games, and I think
if anything was crystallized in this pirate series, which they
(04:36):
lose the first two, Paul Skeens got him on Thursday,
Find no big deal, You've got to win that game.
On Friday, Tony Santienne was brought in to protect a
one run lead in the eighth inning. It didn't happen,
but at the end of the day. They scored five
runs in four games starting with the last game of
that series in Chicago, but the offense totally dried up.
(04:57):
The question is and Hunter Green is gonna come back,
but that's not gonna help this is this team gonna
hit enough? We could break down the schedule. The Reds
obviously have the toughest remaining schedule of any team in baseball.
They've got a really hard six game homestand coming up,
and then a three city road trip next week, which
(05:18):
you don't have many of those anymore. But forget who
they play, forget the state of the starting pitching, which
has been an asset all season long and is about
to be stronger. What I want to know more than
anything else, and maybe Miguel and Dohart to a degree
has helped answer this question. Are they going to hit
(05:42):
enough over their final forty three games to be able
to overcome the New York Mets? And New York might
be in total free fall. They do not play tonight,
so the Reds do have a chance to shave a
half game off that New York lead. But is this
team gonna hit enough over the final six to seven weeks.
It's a question we were asking back in March, when
(06:03):
we were simply hopeful the Reds would be a game
and a half out of a playoff spot in mid August.
It's now mid August. We're still wondering it. I'm not
talking about the the fourteen run outliers or the eleven
run outliers in a game they lost game in and
game out. Are they gonna hit enough to eventually go
(06:24):
on the sort of run that could see them leapfrog
the Mets, maybe catch the Padres and have somebody playing
catch up behind them instead of the other way around.
More on that as the afternoon unfolds.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
You can call the show at five point three, seven,
four nine, fifteen thirty. You could also send it a
tweet or send me a tweet since I run the
Twitter account at moegar our Twitter feed is thanks to
Delta Dental. Delta Dental is building healthy, smart, vibrant communities
for all good to Delta dentaloh dot com. So it
is just one preseason game. It's not worth making a
(07:04):
big deal out of. It's not worth making huge sweeping
conclusions or statements based on what happened in one preseason game.
But the Cincinnati Bengals as a franchise, the current brand
is this. Joe Burrow has to do everything that's the
current brand. Thursday night in Philadelphia did nothing to change
(07:26):
that brand. The brand of the Bengals is EH. The
coaching staff EH, the defense, EH, the offensive line, their
relationship with some of their better players. It's no matter
what we do, no matter what we don't do, no
matter what we don't have, Joe Burrow is going to
(07:48):
overcome all. Now, there's a part of that that comes
with the territory of being a franchise quarterback, and it's
something that Joe has always been equipped for. But that's
the m of this franchise and until that change is
let's be honest, it's gonna be really hard to take
them seriously as championship contenders, as Championship, super Bowl winning contenders.
(08:14):
Joe Burrow has to do it all, It's probably not
gonna work well. On Thursday night, Joe Burrow was awesome.
Looked in mid season four, looked like the kind of
quarterback who is going to be ready to hit the
ground running week one. And at the end of the day,
I think you could argue that as the primary goal
of the preseason here to hit the ground running week one,
(08:36):
unlike last year or the year before or the year
before that. And the biggest reason why this team has
not hit the ground running in Week one in recent
years has been the performance. And if you want to
tie this into it, the health of Joe Burrow. And
so Thursday from that standpoint was very encouraging. He looked sharp,
(08:56):
He looked in command, He looked, as cliches might sound,
he looked like a high end quarterback. In mid season four.
He threw a touchdown to Jamar Chase. They got some
productive snaps from Chase Brown. Joe Burrow looked awesome because
Joe Burrow is awesome. By the way, Mike Sando, who
every year does his Quarterback Tiers t I e RS,
(09:21):
has Joe Burrow a unanimous Tier one quarterback for the
first time of his career. By the way, Mike is
going to join our show on Friday at four oh five.
So Joe Burrow was awesome, not much else was, and
so if nothing else, Thursday only further enhanced the brand.
(09:43):
It further branded this organization as one that's gonna ask
Joe Burrow to do way too much and can't win
games and ways that don't involve Joe Burrow being awesome.
This is not a sweeping conclusion based on one preseason game.
I think most of a knew that in the one
preseason game there was gonna, hopefully be a lot of
(10:03):
stuff to like, but there was gonna be some stuff
to not like. And I can go glass half full
as it relates to the Philadelphia game, Chamar Stewart, Dylan Fairchild,
Joe Burrow, Chase Brown and I can go glass half empty.
Procedural penalties and the defense that just simply didn't look
like it could stop anybody, plus a glaring lack of
(10:24):
offensive line depth. We could also talk about Jake Browning's
performance as well, and we will get to all of
that between now and six o'clock. But Thursday, if you
were hoping to see something that looked and felt different
from what we saw from the Bengals last year. We
can break down that the personnel differences and similarities on defense,
(10:46):
and God knows we're gonna do that. And there are
legitimate questions to be asked about the debt that a
couple of different positions, And what's frustrating about the questions
we're gonna ask about the debt that a couple of
different positions is I'm asking the same questions in August
that many of us were asking in February. But if
there was one grand sort of thirty thousand foot takeaway
(11:07):
to pull from the first preseason game, it was this
right now, right now still looks like a team that's
asking its quarterback to shoulder too large of a burden,
and until that changes, the results are always going to
be limited. The ceiling isn't going to be as high
(11:29):
as it needs to be, and you're gonna have a
hard time taking this franchise seriously as a bona fide
championship contender. Now they play another preseason game a week
from tonight. It is one where we expect more starters
to play, and the starters who play to play longer
than they did against Philadelphia, so there is time. But
(11:51):
I guess two things about this. Number One, all I
can do is react to what I saw on Thursday
and then tie it to what I know about this franchise.
And Number two, the idea this year is to get
off to a fast start. Joe Burrow look capable of
getting off to a fast start. The rest of the
defense and much of the offensive line not so much.
(12:11):
Five point three seven four nine fifteen thirty is our
phone number. An eight sixty six seven zero two three
seven seven six works as well. We have a lot
of ground to cover between now and uh six o'clock.
We've got some other NFL preseason stuff happening lots with
the Reds as they get set for a home stand
(12:32):
against two really good teams that begins tonight. Hunter Green's
return is imminent, which is awesome. FC Cincinnati loses a
head scratching heartbreaker. Uh Tony Pike is going to join
us every hour. We'll also talk injuries with our guy,
doctor Angel Velaskaz from Ortho Cincy in the five o'clock hour.
If you are a Bengals fan, and I am, but
(12:53):
if you're like me. If you're a Bengals, I do
not know how you're not deeply frustrated by two recurring themes.
We'll get to both of them next on ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports.

Speaker 3 (13:43):
This report is damn it. Twenty three after three. This
is ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm olegar, thank you so much
for listening. I've about an awesome weekend. It was hot,
and you know me, I like it hot all hot.
At mulegger on Twitter, so I was. I was. I
(14:05):
was off on Thursday and Friday. I did not get
a chance to to be here to talk about the
preseason game on on Thursday night, and and there was
there were some really nice performances by individual players that
are significant. I wrote on Thursday afternoon because I had
time to kill maybe the longest tweet I've ever written,
(14:28):
and it was about like the game and some stuff
that I wanted to see and some stuff that I
was hoping to see. And I saw some of it.
I didn't see all of it, but I saw some
of it. And we're going to talk about those things.
But when it comes to the critique of the defense,
you may be willing to give them the benefit of
the doubt because you think, you know what, Al Golden
(14:51):
needs time to figure out how to mold these collection
of players, or this collection of players into a better
unit than the one that cost Lewin or Remo his
job last season. And you may believe that, well, hey,
limited results were to be expected because they really weren't
trying to outscheme the Philadelphia Eagles. They were playing a
(15:12):
vanilla defense, and all that's well and good, and you
can certainly side with the calendar, they still have the
benefit of some time. It's August eleventh, the first game
is still just under four weeks away. For me, however,
I don't know how you give this defense the benefit
(15:34):
of the doubt. That includes the defensive coordinator. And so
when you see a lot of the same things in
a game that doesn't count that you saw in the
games that did count, that's that's frustrating. That doesn't mean
these things aren't going to be cleaned up. That doesn't
mean that these things aren't going to be rectified. It
(15:55):
doesn't mean that Al Golden is not going to have
a a successful tenure. Is the Bengals DC, But we're
all judging. I think what we're watching against what they
haven't done in recent years, which is win the first game.
Now you might go, well, mo, they're playing the Browns
who this weekend. One of the stories in the entire
(16:17):
league was how good Shador Sanders performed in his NFL debut.
But I've heard it in the past, right, like, don't
worry about it because the schedule makers have done him
a favor in early on. They don't play anybody. Okay,
I'm not interested in who the Bengals play. I'm interested
in whether the Bengals play better and in this one
(16:38):
area of the team that represents an enormous question mark.
The first test against another team, it failed, it failed.
If the offense fails, you might have some concerns based
on again, their recent inability to get off to a
(16:59):
fast start. Joe Burrow plays poorly in a preseason game,
He's Joe Burrow, He's awesome. He's the best quarterback in
the sport. Perhaps if Jamar Chase runs a sloppy router,
if there is a timing issue between Joe and Jamar,
Joe and T in a preseason game, I'm led to
believe that stuff's going to get ironed out. Those are
dudes who have earned the benefit of the doubt. Al
(17:22):
Golden has not as an organization. The Bengals on defense,
the way they're doing things right now have not. And
then you add to the frustration, not just how they performed.
In fact, I would say that's not nearly as frustrating
as this. It's August the eleventh, the first game is
less than a month away, and yet I'm reading a
(17:45):
lot about the Bengals play at safety, mainly because Gino's
Stone isn't healthy, suffered a soft tissue injury during that
game on Thursday night, and Zach Taylor is even acknowledging, well,
we're gonna have to take this week to kind of
figure some stuff out. Like here's the exact quote quote.
(18:08):
I think that's a group that we're looking to make
sure we're deep enough there. That's not a quote from
a week before free agency. That's not a quote from
mid March, after free agency had been under away for
a week and a half. That's not a quote leading
into the draft. That's a quote after a few weeks
(18:29):
where the practices and the season opener sitting there less
than a month away. We're looking to make sure we
have enough depth there. This a reaction obviously to again
Genostone suffering a hamstring issue. Now tell me if I
(18:50):
am misrepresenting this, but didn't most of us all off season?
Wonder should the Bengals be a little bit more proactive
at safety? Do they have enough guys? Are there enough
options in the event that Genostone gets hurt or ends up,
you know, not being the guy. What if Genostone tells
(19:11):
the Bengals I'm not taking a pay cut. I mean
to me, like, if you ask someone to take a
pay cut, the only reason they should say no is
if if there's nobody behind him. Genostone took the pay cut.
That kind of tells me, at least the insinuation was
there's going to be somebody behind you. Why couldn't they
(19:32):
still go get that player and ask Genostone to take
a pay cut and keep him on the team. Like,
I don't know how this doesn't frustrate too if you
care about this franchise. What felt like a huge need,
maybe not an overhaul, but just more options, a little
bit more depth back in February is something we're still
(19:56):
talking about and wondering about in August, and it's it's
not because a whole bunch of players have gotten hurt
or a whole bunch of players they acquired from outside
just in the short term have not worked out. It's
because their plan behind Genostone was perilous to begin with,
wrought with danger. I don't know how that's not troubling.
(20:22):
I don't know how that's not frustrating. Austin said this
when we did quick Hits about forty five minutes ago,
that it's not totally unlike the Reds post spring training
where we wondered all offseason have they done enough? Are
they doing enough? Can they go get a power bat?
And what were we still talking about as the trade
deadline approached? Can the Reds go get a power bat?
(20:45):
Can the Reds does more to their offense? Like it's
one thing for a need to suddenly emerge or a
hole to just all of a sudden overnight open itself up.
It's one thing for circumstances to dictate that you have
to take a closer look at a certain position. But
I cannot find anybody who back in January or February
(21:08):
the Bengals thought the Bengals should leave well enough alone
at safety. They did. Now their starter is hurt and
the coaches openly saying we've got to make sure we're
deep enough there. Chances are the answer is no, because
that was the answer back in February twenty nine, away
from four o'clock, Tony Pike on this issue and many more.
(21:32):
We haven't talked about the offensive line depth issues yet.
We also haven't discussed two guys from the Bengals rookie
class who, if you're a Bengals fan, should have made
you very happy by how they played on Thursday and
one guy who I think is very very slowly, maybe
very very quickly smashing narratives that coming up in the

they played against The eagles relatively.
Speaker 9 (28:45):
High, NOW i will say THAT i think one of
the biggest tests that you can face, is you, know
going through a game like that in your first outing
as a new defensive, coordinator and how much growth you
can show between one and. Two So i'm not dead
on The bengals defense right, now BUT i will, say

Concerned i'm not quitting on, them BUT i think you
can tell a lot from a defense based on game
one to game. Two so if it's better Against, washington
then you, say, okay here's the growth that you're looking.
For if it's not significantly, better then there are legitimate
questions because all offseason we've heard that they're going to
dumb it, down they're going to run base personnel groupings
(30:22):
to allow players to play confident and. Fast, well the
response after the game was they were just running based
stuff is almost used to an excuse as to why they.
Struggled so those two things didn't. Mesh they didn't win
any of their one on one, battles and they got
beat up physically against twos and threes from another. Team
that is cause for. Concern and then.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
We find out in the aftermath of it That Geno
stone suffered a soft tissue injury hamstring, problem, which, okay
those things. Happen but what frustrates me AND i would
imagine you would concur is we spent months this offseason,
Wondering number, one how good is genostone going to be
under Al Golden number two If ginos don't either gets
(31:04):
hurt or shows that he can't do the. Job, eh
how about the plan behind? Him that plan behind? Him
WHEN i read The Zach taylor's saying this, week we've
got to make sure we're deep enough. There, boy that's
frustrating because we were wondering that exact same thing four
or five months.
Speaker 9 (31:20):
Ago all off. Season that was a major. Question that
and the offensive line were probably the two, biggest along
with the contract Of Trey. Henderson but, LOOK i get
not making a move, YET i get the optics of.
It practice, tomorrow Practice, wednesday whatever you need to do
to spin it in a way to, say, well we
wanted to see if it's here on the, roster and if,
(31:41):
not then we're gonna address. It you can't allow this
to get past next. Week you can't allow this to
get up to the week of the first game against
The Cleveland. BROWNS i, Understand, hey we're gonna give guys an,
opportunity but we thought this depth was going to be a.
Problem it already is showing.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
To be a.
Speaker 9 (31:57):
PROBLEM i don't know how much longer you can go
and not address the elephant in the, room which is
the safety position right Now for The, bengals which had
zero depth.
Speaker 3 (32:06):
Currently, yeah and then you know you mentioned the offensive
line WHEN i read that While jalen, rivers they're going
to have to move him back to guard and perhaps
Take Cody ford over and move move. Him and we're doing,
this As cam started, again depth on the offensive line
was a question back In. April it's a question In.
(32:26):
August and that also is at least a little.
Speaker 9 (32:28):
Frustrating, yeah here we, are we're into you, know preseason
game number, two and we're talking about the offensive line.
Again so, AGAIN i don't know why it hasn't been.
Addressed it doesn't make sense that it's not been. Addressed
and they weren't going to be beneficiaries last, Week, mo
because that was one of the situations where had the
(32:49):
offense not moved the ball against twos and, threes with
the power that this offense, has there would be major.
Issues the way that they did, it you, said, man
that's great.
Speaker 3 (32:56):
Offense look.
Speaker 9 (32:57):
Good they did what they were supposed to. Do Now
washington places more of their. STARTERS i think you get
more of a gauge on where that offensive line. Is and,
again you have to make quick decisions going forward because
the season is rapidly, approaching and you can't afford to
Miss Joe burrow at, all.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
No question about. It. Tony we'll chat again coming up
at four forty. Five we'll take a look at some
things that did go well On. THURSDAY i know you can't.
Speaker 9 (33:18):
Wait Thanks.
Speaker 3 (33:19):
Mom that's our. Guy Tony pike joins us once an
hour with the latest on The. Bengals The bengals aren't practicing,
today But Tony pike is still giving his live training
camp reports three forty, five four forty, five and five forty,
Five and of course he AND i are back tomorrow
with THE A. E door And Window tony And Moe
Training Camp, show beginning at ten. Am tomorrow's, practice like
(33:42):
the rest of, them is not open to the, public
but we could be your eyes and ears and tell
you what's going on starting at ten am. Tomorrow we
are down there three more, times each of them this, Week, Tomorrow,
wednesday and our last one is On. Friday and of
course we've got The bengals and The commanders a week
from tonight ON espn fifteen, thirty preseason game number, two
(34:06):
with starters expected to play about a. Half tony joining
us on The Ray Saint Clair roofing hotline as. Well
five point three seven four nine fifteen thirty is our phone.
Number eight sixty six seven oh two three seven seven.
SIX i will tell you this that there is a
A bengal THAT i was watching very very closely On
(34:28):
thursday THAT i don't think we have to talk about,
anymore and this is really. Good and there's another one
WHO i think a lot of us were watching, closely
WHO i HOPE i hope you saw WHAT i. DID
i hope you saw WHAT i, did BECAUSE i tell
you WHAT i saw On thursday from this one player
(34:49):
that coming up here in just a. Bit, also we've
got The reds And phillies starting a series. Tonight reds
survived that road. TRIP i GUESS I i wonder how
many games they're gonna play that we, circle excuse, me Like.
Fridays because for them to lose the way they did
(35:11):
On thursday Against Paul, skens that's one. Thing for them
to lose the way they did On wednesday With Andrew
abbott on the, hill that's another. Thing for them to
lose the game the way they did On friday is something.
Else when you are in the sort of race The
reds are in. Lots more on that coming up here
in just a. Bit AND i didn't get to my
big IMPORTANT uc training camp thoughts that coming up as
well ON espn fifteen thirty having.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
Loose training camp For toni and More Football show is,
there bringing you The orange And black like never Before
tomorrow at ten am ON espn fifteen to thirty of
the official home OF Us Cincinnati. Bengal cannot.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
Wait by the, way not only CAN i not wait
for That tomorrow Plus wednesday Plus wednesday final three a
e dooring Window Tony Mo training camp. Shows but we
are four weeks away from our first show At Twin,
peaks The tony And Mo Football show now in its eleventh,
(36:09):
Year so excited for. That and we're gonna be At
Twin peaks again this season for a six consecutive. Year
we love the folks At Twin. Peaks the First tony
And Mo Football show will beat The westchester location On,
Monday september the. Eighth cannot, wait and we'll do two
In westchester then too And florence and kind of do
(36:30):
it that way all throughout the course of the. Season
we hope to see you there at some point this.
Season tony joins me, again coming up in just about
forty minutes Plus brenneman And jones On, Baseball reds are
about to play some very good. TEAMS i guess there's two.
Questions there's two. Questions one is are they going to
be able to hit? Enough my take on The reds
(36:51):
they've played is it one hundred and nineteen? Games they've
played one hundred and nineteen. Games my take on The
reds has not, Changed and even though they're now really
within striking distance of that last wild card, spot it
still hasn't. Changed this team's starting pitching is good enough
to keep it in the hunt for the. DURATION i
(37:13):
say that independent of. SCHEDULE i believe that independent of
knowing When Hunter green is going to come. Back now
that we know, that barring something unforeseen and, unfortunate he's
going to pitch On, wednesday the red starting, pitching Which
hunter coming back And Zach lettel being a part of
the staff right, now only makes the bullpen ideally. Stronger
(37:36):
Hopefully Nick lodolo can return here. Soon but the team
starting pitching is good. Enough it's good enough regardless of
if they're playing The pirates or The cubs or The
phillies or The angels or. Whoever their offensive shortcomings are
impossible to. Ignore, yes it's great they scored fourteen runs,
(37:57):
yesterday and The Miguel Andrew horse signing has been or
acquisition has been a positive. One but still with, him
it looks like an incomplete offensive. Team are they gonna
be able to hit enough over the final forty three
games of the season to get over the? Hump my
take all long has been the starting pitching is good
(38:18):
enough to keep this team in the. Hunt their offensive
shortcomings are too profound and too pronounced to believe that
they can get to the. Postseason now you might, go, Well,
god The New York mets are a train, wreck and
offensively they have all sorts of. Issues they address their
bullpen at the trade. Deadline didn't do much with that
offense In New. York they're Asking Juan soto to Be Joe.
(38:41):
BURROW i don't believe The cardinals Or, giants or even
The Miami marlins are gonna be able to get over the.
HUMP i genuinely do believe this is likely to be
a two team race moving. Forward but your biggest asset
can't be for the final six weeks of the, season
seven weeks of the, season whatever it, is your biggest
asset is, well the other team's gonna fall flat on
(39:02):
its face at some. Point The mets are gonna start playing.
Better can can The reds hit? Enough and can they
win fifty to fifty? Games, Yeah like everybody says about
the baseball, Season Sparky anderson used to say, this everybody's
gonna win, sixty everybody's gonna lose. Sixty what do you
do with the other forty? Two so you, know The
(39:24):
reds are gonna have games that they win. Comfortably yesterday
might not have been a comfortable. VICTORY i don't know
anyone who was watching or listening yesterday who began to
feel comfortable once The pirates erased an early four to nothing,
lead or once McClain made the air on the ball
(39:45):
that allowed The pirates to score two runs in the eighth,
Inning but they won by six. Runs it scored fourteen.
Times so you're gonna have those sorts of. Victories hopefully
The reds have a bunch and then you're you're gonna
have and they're they're gonna come at a cost because
of where we are in the, schedule but you're gonna
(40:06):
have nights Like thursday where the other team's pitcher is just.
Awesome Paul skens gave up seven hits and six, innings but,
offensively this team was no match For Paul, skeens no
real match for the three relievers The pirates. Used Brady's
singer was not very good control, Issues Brent souter had
a bad. Performance, fine you're gonna lose games seven to.
(40:30):
Nothing you're gonna lose games like they did the previous
day and the series finale against The cubs six to.
One what about the fifty to fifty? Games what about
the games that going into the seventh, inning going into
the eighth inning feel like anybody's. BALLGAME i know The
reds chances of winning the game On friday were higher
than fifty percent mathematically, speaking When Tony santion took the
(40:53):
ball in the bottom of the eighth inning On. Friday
but that's a game that the outcome is kind of
hanging in the balance as you get to the latter few.
Winnings can The reds win enough of those? Games can
The reds win enough fifty to fifty? Games i'm overly
simplifying this to a, Degree i'm kind of Like Al
golin dumbing it down for a preseason, game taking a
(41:13):
defense it's already dumbed, down and dumbing it down even.
Further but can they win those? Games however many they
are where going into the seventh or eighth, inning it's anybody's,
ballgame and The reds need somebody to get the big,
hit and they need a pitcher to get some high leverage,
outs and they need a play to be made in the.
(41:34):
Field can they win those games? That and can they hit?
Enough and by the, way if they hit, enough maybe
they won't have as many of those, games but of
all of them on the road, trip, like just think
how we would feel today had they closed that game
out On, Friday you're gone cool. Man so they lose
on getaway day In chicago and they lose the game
That Paul skeins. Pitches other than that five and two,
(41:55):
trip pretty damn, good plus half game out of the wild.
Card and, instead even though they won those last two
On saturday and, yesterday you couldn't help but keep thinking About. Friday,
friday they were in the position they were in because
they didn't hit made that a fifty to fifty. Game
again not purely, mathematical, right but still anybody's ballgame in
(42:17):
the eighth? Inning can they win enough of? Those the
two players On thursday that we've talked about a bunch,
one we don't need to talk about. Anymore of every
player on the field Against, philadelphia the guy THAT i
was most interested in his individual performance Was Dylan. Fairchild
(42:42):
bengals need better guard. Play they draft him in round
three and tell, him, dude it's your job to. Lose
so not that there's not offensive line questions, elsewhere because
there certainly are about, depth certainly are about swing. TACKLE
i think they're taking a massive leap of faith In Lucas.
(43:04):
Patrick but WHAT i was hoping, for AND i would
imagine if you're A bengals, fan you're kind of WHERE i.
Was WHAT i was hoping for On thursday was to
See Dylan fairchild looked the part enough THAT i, go
you know, what we don't have to talk about him.
Anymore he's the. Guy maybe the coaching staff looks at
it the exact same. Way maybe they. Don't not that
(43:26):
he's a perfect, player not that he's not going to make,
mistakes but just can this guy in his FIRST nfl
game action look the PART i Thought Dylan fairchild, Did
and so NOW i feel like you could just let
him kind of do his thing over the final few
weeks of the, preseason the final few weeks of training,
camp hopefully gain more, experience hopefully get better and improve
(43:52):
as the season goes. On but to, me like WHAT
i was hoping for On thursday was to see enough
From Dylan fairchild THAT i, go you, know but that
guy's gonna be. FINE i think we saw. That we
also Saw Shamar stewart Now Shamar stuart and we discussed
this on this show a little bit early last. WEEK
(44:13):
i think to that dude's credit almost instantly changed the,
conversation because god, knows for weeks on, end it was
all about his contract and all about the language and
the contract and all about the back and forth Between
schamar and the team and the team And chamar's, agent
and then he, signed got to camp and started to
(44:33):
get people to talk about him from the standpoint of
how he can help the team this. Year almost, instantly
that is a, major major credit to. Him SO i
think what a lot of us were hoping for On
thursday was that that would, continue that you would see
just enough of a flash from him that you, Went,
okay not only do we not have to talk about
(44:55):
the contract thing, anymore but we can start to see
the seeds being. Planted a rookie season that could really
amount to. SOMETHING i think we got that On. Thursday
there were a couple of times, where you, know regardless
of who was that quarterback for The Philadelphia, eagles he
was able to flush the quarterback from the, pocket was
(45:17):
able to maybe speed up his clock a little. Bit
he had a tackle for. Loss he was. Disruptive he was.
Disruptive so, yes it would be awesome If Shamar stewart
had more than one and a half sacks this. Year
and this is how it. Worked And i'm sure he
would be the first to tell. You in, FACT i
(45:39):
know he would, be because he said this on our
show the day after he got, drafted that the lack
of sacks thing is going to stay with him through
HIS nfl career until he gets a bunch of, sacks
and we certainly hope that he. Does but you could
be a positive presence up, front and you could be,
(45:59):
distive and you could help your, team and you could
be hard to game plan, for and you could be
hard to block without necessarily dragging the quarterback to the
ground while he has the football in his. Hands we
Saw Shamar stewart show the ability to, disrupt disrupt a quarterbacks,
timing change up a quarterback's comfort, zone make him suddenly
(46:25):
start to, scramble and now he's got to make decisions
on the. Run we saw all. That it's Why and, look,
Man i'm the first to tell you that when we
were vetting out Potential bengals, draftees the first thing you
noticed when you Saw schamar was the one and a
half sacks last, year four and a half over his
college football. Career, again inescapable and not. Insignificant but The
(46:49):
Cincinnati bengals themselves are telling you sacks don't. Matter they
haven't Signed Trey, hendrickson who had more of those than
anybody who played last. Year they're bringing it back With
Miles murphy who'd zero last. Season sacks are, Great sacks
aren't the end all and be. All WHAT i was
hopeful for and WHAT i think can happen is the
things That Shamar stewart did well in college can translate
(47:11):
to the next. Level the dude famously so had thirty
nine pressures last, year which WAS i think somewhere close
to the top forty IN fbs college. FOOTBALL i think
it was just inside the top. Forty but those, disruptions
those pressures can can lead to other, things ball being
thrown out of, bounds a quarterback making the wrong, decision a,
(47:32):
turnover stopping a team on downs because it's an incompletion
and now they got a. Punt it can add up
to can contribute to a lot of different. Things, so,
Yes Shamar stewart's got to sack the, Quarterback but more than,
anything is he capable of being? Disruptive in his first
week during practice in THE, nfl the answer was. Yes
On thursday, night the answer was also. Yes the conversation
(47:56):
shift continues and did so based on his play against
The Filmladelphia eagles seventeen minutes after four. O'clock your phone
calls are coming up five, one, three, seven four, nine

I've all, you know it's really. A shame that's for
your love OF. The nba you really missed. The seventies
who is?
Speaker 3 (50:19):
A Shame wellk first, of all can you take me off?
Speaker 9 (50:22):
Your?
Speaker 3 (50:22):
SPEAKERPHONE yeah i, was okay DOING something i. Totally, UNDERSTAND
secondly I don't i don't believe.
Speaker 7 (50:31):
The phone.
Speaker 3 (50:31):
WAIT don't i don't view it the SAME only i
don't view it the. Same WAY the nba in the
nineteen seventies was. Not GOOD.
Speaker 8 (50:40):
The nba in the late nineteen seventies, was good which
transitioned Right into Magic.
Speaker 3 (50:45):
And, larry YEAH the nba when games were on tape
to lay hard pass on that. One, MAN.
Speaker 8 (50:51):
Yeah i mean they're actually THE the i think the
series Between the bullets and And, the SONICS if i,
recall correctly it was. Pretty good but then when nineteen
Eighty Hit, watch out that's when the league lit up
and they. Got REJUVENATED and i wish You And Taron
bullet arran might have. Been around i'm not sure, how
OLD but i wish you could have been there for,
(51:11):
that moment really.
Speaker 9 (51:12):
DO well.
Speaker 3 (51:14):
I, appreciate THAT but i DON'T think i really. Missed
Anything That sonic's bullet series was a five. Game series
the games themselves were actually. Pretty good but, you know
the the Entry of jordan Or of Magic and bird
INTO the nba is hell as something that saved. The
League so i'm not exactly HEARTBROKEN that i. WATCHED that
(51:36):
i didn't get a chance to watch the league before it. Needed,
saving no but.
Speaker 8 (51:41):
You would you didn't get to see It with Magic,
and larry did?
Speaker 3 (51:44):
You not, At, first no but like, you know everybody
as a kid was Either a magic guy Or a.
LARRY guy i Was a. Magic, Guy yeh i'll never
Be a. Celtics GUY so. I remember i remember When
the lakers Lost the rockets In The Western conference final
in nineteen. Eighty six how earth shattering? That was like
(52:08):
how much of a massive upset. That Was the Lakers
and celtics had played the year before and the year prior.
To that everybody was expecting a third straight final between. The,
Two instead houston upset them on A shot i Believe
By ralph samson at the Horn in, game six And
the rockets ended up losing that series To the celtics in.
(52:29):
Six games boston regarded at that point as maybe the
greatest TEAM in. Nba HISTORY so i remember that as
a kid. Pretty, WELL.
Speaker 8 (52:38):
Yeah i have To say boston team that one year
was pretty Spectacular With bill walton and those guys.
Speaker 4 (52:44):
ON there.
Speaker 8 (52:46):
I don't think we're gonna change these subjects here to the, Baseball,
courts yes there is no Way the mets are going
to stay in this funk. Care in it's just not.
Gonna happen it wouldn't happen To.
Speaker 9 (52:58):
The reds it wouldn't.
Speaker 8 (52:58):
Happen to anybody Except, Maybe colorado pittsburgh And The. White,
sox no they're not going to stay in, this punk
so they're gonna start winning. Some gates they didn't improve
that bullpen. For nothing Alonzo and solo are gonna start
hitting sooner, or Later and lindor and so Be careful
reds because this team is not going down. A toilet
(53:19):
they are not well.
Speaker 3 (53:20):
They HAVE but i mean that's, the thing it's they they.
WILL start, i mean they're not gonna lose every game
the rest of. THE way i GUESS what i would
WONDER if i Were a, mets fan would be how
long until? THAT happens, i mean Like the mets are
forty two and forty five over the last eighty seven
games that's Happened to it could. Happen tomorrow it could.
(53:45):
Happen tomorrow but the point being is they have been
a below five hundred team for a large chunk. Of
Time francisco lindor is not hitting, Right Now brandon nimo
is not hitting. Right Now juan soto is batting less
than two hundred with runners in. Scoring. Position now they
did make their, bullpen better there's no getting. Around that
(54:05):
but this has been a bad offense for most of.
The season it's a. Bad, offense now WHY am i
to assume that things all of a sudden are going.
Speaker 8 (54:12):
To change because it's just the nature of. The game
they got too many good guys that can hit. OVER
time i just don't see them keeping in this. Horrendous,
slump yeah maybe.
Speaker 3 (54:25):
Back AGAIN like i expect them to win a game at,
some point because if, they didn't they would basically lose
their last. Fifty games that team hasn't looked formidable since
the first month of. The season.
Speaker 8 (54:40):
That might be a, little extension, but anyway.
Speaker 3 (54:44):
They were twenty one to ten on the last Day.
Of april, since then they're three under. Five hundred so
what ABOUT what i just said? Is, Inaccurate.
Speaker 8 (54:53):
Nothing so you're right. ABOUT that i just don't see
a team with those quality of those guys to keep
just in. The punk but maybe.
Speaker 3 (55:02):
They were there's More star You're you're you're, absolutely right
there is more star. Power there but they have free.
Fallen here they've Allowed the reds back into, The race
AND if i Were A new, YORK fan i would
feel uneasy about number one when is this funk going?
To end? Number two did we just allow a team
(55:23):
with better starting pitching to re enter the race that's
about to get their staff? Ace, back Like if I'm
A new, York fan i'm, going like, all right we're
gonna start playing better at. Some point but did we
really did we really want to let a team enter
the race with top ends starting pitching and improve bullpen
(55:44):
And a Hall of. Fame, MANAGER well i.
Speaker 8 (55:46):
Hope, you're RIGHT because i hate any teams From The.
EAST coast i don't root for any. OF them i hate, Them,
All Philadelphia, new york every one. OF them i never
root for any team from.
Speaker 3 (55:54):
The COAST and, i, got like, a minute is That a?
Speaker 8 (55:57):
Milwaukee? Team unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (55:58):
They're awesome they didn't again.
Speaker 8 (56:00):
LAST night, i mean how is? This happening they have
the same payroll With.
Speaker 9 (56:04):
The redtail it's.
Speaker 3 (56:05):
Incredible, moment yeah they've just gotten really really good at.
Getting players, you know obviously They Got gwyn priester from.
Another organization they've gotten really good at promoting guys who
are just ready to play in the. Big leagues if
you look at their lineup top, to bottom there's nobody
(56:25):
who absolutely, scares you but. It's remarkable they're. Twenty, NINE

Pregame series Between the Reds and phillies TONIGHT, at gabp
featuring a postgame Concert By. Snoop dogg remember tonight's first
pitch is at six' ten throwing out a ceremonial first
pitch is going to be a gentleman by The Name,
of jack crawford twenty Years, Old. From houston Texas he's a.
Formula two driver he is earning HIS way. To f
(57:50):
one recently selected to Serve As an andretti formulae reserve.
And development driver he's IN his third. F two season
he is going to be at. The ballpark tonight jacket
is awesome. TO have you i. Appreciate the Time. Welcome
to cincinnati. How are you, I'm very.
Speaker 11 (58:05):
Good thank you? How are you i'm.
Speaker 3 (58:07):
Doing really well have you practiced your? CEREMONIAL first pitch
i have.
Speaker 11 (58:12):
A little bit i was practicing with my daddy yesterday in.
The front yard you said it, Wasn't too, bad so.
Speaker 3 (58:18):
Okay very good you have to throw, from the mound, you? Know,
this right yeah we have probably.
Speaker 11 (58:22):
Send sixty, feet all.
Speaker 3 (58:23):
Right very good so now you're, twenty years old so you've.
You've been driving Correct me, If i'm wrong since you were,
six years old so it was like playing baseball sort
of a new.
Speaker 11 (58:32):
Thing, FOR you no i actually played baseball growing up
for probably. SEVEN eight, years i, CATCHER but yeah i
haven't played, in a while in probably. Eight Nine, Years.
Speaker 3 (58:44):
All right so you started driving when you were. Six
years old how does a child get into driving to
the extent that it ultimately gets them to the level. You're,
at now yeah.
Speaker 9 (58:56):
It's been a.
Speaker 11 (58:58):
PRETTY crazy journey i just loved the. Racing growing up
my dad bought me a go kart and. Never, looked back,
basically you know we've been been racing almost every weekend,
ever since then working my way through karting up Into
up into formula Cars and.
Speaker 3 (59:15):
In Formula, two all right so you're gonna go kart.
When you're six how do you go from a go
card To like a formula? One?
Speaker 11 (59:21):
STYLE car yeah i MEAN when once i, WAS old enough,
i got, to you KNOW decide, what I want whether
i wanted to pursue it full time, and you know,
as A career. And i DID and once i, turned
OLD enough when, i was fourteen finally got to race
In a small Formula car, in formula four and then
(59:42):
there was time to make.
Speaker 3 (59:43):
The dream, reality all right so You're currently. Driving formula
two Correct me. If i'm wrong There are no AMERICAN drivers.
In f one so when you get, to that level
describe for my audience how huge of a deal. That's,
gonna be yeah.
Speaker 11 (59:58):
Pretty huge deal it's a kind, of, a rarity uh,
For you know americans TO be. An f one there's
there's been, one last year but he, got you, know
kicked out and since then it was almost twenty years
before that was. Another twenty, years so yeah it's it's
Difficult for for americans To race, in formula one, And
(01:00:18):
you know i'm hoping to be the one to do.
It full time.
Speaker 3 (01:00:21):
Why why is it so Rare for an american driver
to get? To, THAT level.
Speaker 11 (01:00:28):
Yeah i think a. Lot of factors, it's you know
of course. A logistical challenge f One is, very european
based so you really have to. Commit your, life you
know we Have equivalents, to formula one being an IndyCar.
In the us it's the. Open wheel equivalent so and
it hasn't been A lot ON tv when i, was
GROWING up so i barely even knew about it until
(01:00:50):
until very late. In my childhood so it WASN'T even
something i wanted to pursue until a couple.
Speaker 3 (01:00:56):
Of years ago so like when when you were a
kid and you start by, a go, karting you're, thinking
you know like stock, cars, One day right so what
is it like when you make that pivot to this?
Speaker 11 (01:01:05):
Style, OF car yeah I was thinking nascar, in THE
car and i just got these great opportunities to, forge
this path, AND you know i TOOK them and, i realized,
THAT you know i wanted To Be a formula one
driver and.
Speaker 3 (01:01:22):
Pursue that path and what has it been like watching
the popularity in this sport sort of go through the roof? In,
recent years yeah it's.
Speaker 11 (01:01:30):
Been been, huge You know with netflix series, of you
KNOW a new f one. Movie AS well it's i
used to struggle to be ABLE to find f ONE,
on on tv on on on the ground Pre, day
on sunday and, Now you know i'm sure you could
find it all OVER. In the, us so yeah it's
definitely crazy how how. Much it's, GROWN you know i
(01:01:51):
have so many friends and so many people my age
learning about it and and super. Interested in, it so
yeah it's really. Cool, to, see yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:01:59):
No it is. It's Pretty awesome jack crawford IS with
us f two driver throwing out the ceremonial first pitch

he and i are Back tomorrow For The Tony And,
low training camp show. Beginning at ten, am first things
first even though, there's no practice today there's no shortage
of Stuff to discuss. That, Tony, Is, here. Hi tony
hello mo let's begin WITH a player that i don't
(01:06:49):
think we have, to talk About Anymore, and THAT'S dylan
fairchild because i think he did ENOUGH during his first
nfl game to, make me feel, Like you know. What,
he'll be.
Speaker 9 (01:06:56):
Fine yeah it's crazy out of the first game and
wonder more about the Other Guard position With Lucas patrick
and cody Ford Than. WE do dylan fairchild i thought
it was. A great step forward i thought. HIS footwork
looked clean i thought he handled. Some stunts pretty well
he's going to get another opportunity against Probably some starters
for washington coming up in. Preseason game number two but
(01:07:18):
the conversation around him was don't do anything that's going
to get you noticed.
Speaker 4 (01:07:21):
In a.
Speaker 9 (01:07:22):
NEGATIVE way he didn't i thought he showed very well
for a rookie starting in. HIS first preseason game.
Speaker 3 (01:07:27):
I Also felt like shamar stewart on the other side
of the. Ball, did as well, yeah he looked.
Speaker 9 (01:07:32):
Fast he looked explosive he was around. The ball a
lot he, didn't finish the play but he. Was around
the ball made a very good play on a play
action where he would have stopped the run and still provided.
Pressure on the quarterback but everything about what we've seen
from him has been. Solid to, this point, he's athletic
he's strong he's got. Great get off speed he just
(01:07:54):
needs to put. The final pieces together that should come
when he gets more of an. Understanding OF the defense
but I thought he was, FROM a show standpoint i
thought he showed out a Little Better than what miles
murphy was able to.
Speaker 8 (01:08:05):
Do.
Speaker 3 (01:08:05):
IN the game yeah i went into the game wanting
to watch those. Two, players in particular right we're Not Going,
to see trey hendrickson so give me these two guys
who are gonna have a lot to say about how
good the pass rush. IS going to be i WAS
pleased by What I. SAW from shamar stewart i WAS
disappointed by what I Didn't. See, from miles.
Speaker 9 (01:08:23):
Murphy yeah it just was a lot of what we've.
Seen in, the past you know the base defense or
the dumbing It Down defense from al golden is going
to allow, players to play fast but it's also going
to put them in one on one situations and you've
got to be able to win in those and we've
not seen enough of That Consistently yet from miles murphy
(01:08:44):
to win in those. One on one situations he, looks
the part physically he, checks all the boxes, but for
whatever reason he's just not been able to put. It
all Together Yet at the, cincinnati bengal, All right.
Speaker 3 (01:08:54):
One more i'll flip it back over to the offensive.
Side of the football you got A Glimpse into what,
chase brown can do which. We got last year but
with everything that has been, said and, written about you
know how he's worked on his pass routes and, being
a more reliable more reliable receiver. In the passing game
you add that to what we saw with him Running,
the football on thursday it just it makes you start
(01:09:16):
to really wonder what this offense could look like if
it can get through most of. A. SEASON fully operational
yeah i love him.
Speaker 9 (01:09:24):
IN the passing game i love the explosiveness that he brings.
TO the passing game i love the way, he hits
the hole whether it's inside the tackle box or. Outside
the tackle box he's. Always seemingly falling forward he's taken
steps to improve his pass protection and being more of.
A three down back i like everything you. SAW Out
of Him, i dolsa like molly a guy that.
Speaker 3 (01:09:43):
We're both High.
Speaker 9 (01:09:44):
On how about todds brooks showed out really well In
that game. AGAINST philly as well i think those are
two really good starts from. A running back room You know.
WHAT samaj pirn is i think they got a really
good room at Running.
Speaker 1 (01:09:58):
Back with the bengals.
Speaker 3 (01:09:59):

A Question about keep brian hayes since the moment We
found out the, reds Traded for him and i'm finally
(01:11:36):
gonna get a chance to ask it to an expert
coming up in just about twenty five Minutes Plus more
From tony pike, On bengals Training camp red's and phillies.
Tonight at six' ten this road trip was a microcosm
of the. Season right all year long right when you
feel like, they're about. To take off they lose right
when you feel about the seasons about, to spiral. Down the.
Drain They, win win, too in chicago there's excitement lose
(01:11:59):
the next three, THERE'S the, opposite of excitement i think
especially with how They. Lost the game on friday come
back and win, the game in thrilling fashion Get A,
great start from nick martinez and. THEN the fourteen runs
yesterday i, am a Little bit passed and maybe. I'm
in the minority here i'm a little bit past kind
of breaking. The, schedule, down into segments well here this
(01:12:22):
homestand HERE is going to determine i kind of feel
like this team deserves a. Little, bit better than that
now look that's not to say that what they have this.
Coming week is not challenging they're taking on the two
teams that have the. Two best records, in baseball but
man like if, you're a real playoff. Team go be
good teams and over, the last, couple of weeks you
(01:12:44):
Know They. HAD success at Wrigley field i think the
cubs are still going. To be a playoff team they.
Won two out of three they won two out of
three After the Break Against, The mets in new york like?
WANT to go do, this i remember years. Ago this
is fifteen YEARS my favorite year that i was ever
able to do this show was, the twenty ten baseball
(01:13:05):
season because our show started. In Two thousand and seven the,
reds were bad that year. Fired their manager that year they,
had been bad for years and then in twenty ten they,
kind of suddenly got, good not necessarily almost overnight but
it kind of felt. Like IT in real time and
i remember after about two and a half months of.
(01:13:28):
THEM hanging in the race, i could look this up
but THEY went into a stretch i think From like
the End Of june through the all star break where
they were playing a. Bunch of really good TEAMS one
of those Teams, i REMEMBER was the phillies because i
remember them winning one Of those games Against The phillies on,
a jay Bruce Home. Run think, off roy halliday but
(01:13:49):
anyway they were going into this stretch where they had
like ten or twelve games before, the break against decent
teams and the, narrative, at the time was boy if
they could just Water Between now. And the all star,
break AND my take was and i, set it on
the air to hell with treading water. Go in SOME
baseball games and, if i recall this team, that TEAM
(01:14:11):
fifteen years ago did i viewed, This, homestand the same
way yes. You, have to avoid disaster yes if they can,
simply not lose Two series chances are the reds will
hit the coast next week at least reasonably close to
where they are right Now In Relation. To THE new
(01:14:31):
york mets but i do think There's something about like
the mets appear. To be in free Fall we had
our guy mike. On about, an, hour ago he's like look,
it's NOT going, to continue and i agree it's not
going to continue to the point that they. Never win
another game again that team has also played about Five.
Hundred baseball, since early may their offense especially in clutch
(01:14:54):
situations has been. An issue all season long but you
do have to take advantage of. While your opponent is
wounded you do have to take advantage of all the
team that you're chasing or the team that you're trying
to fend off is, going through A Rough Patch and
the new, york mets Are right now maybe. The reds CAN,
TAKE advantage but like i i just if this team's
(01:15:15):
gonna make, the payout of the playoffs are gonna. Have to
be good teams and if, you can't beat good teams
you don't deserve. To be in the postseason so we
could obsess over who they play, And where, they play
them And yes they do have if you take, everybody
on their schedule combined they have the highest combined opponent
winning percentage. OF any TEAM in baseball i hope i.
(01:15:37):
Put that the, right way you know What this rebuild
that the reds started prior to the twenty twenty one
season was supposed to yield good results right around. The
middle of the decade it's. The Middle of the Decade
The reds, are getting hunter green, Back they're a healthy
ish they've made some. ADDITIONS at the trade deadline i,
think for. The, most part they're decent additions they've got
(01:16:01):
the manager that they're paying a lot of money to
come out of retirement. To sit in the dugout he's
been here now for. Three quarters of a season. Go
make the damn playoffs And whether you're playing the Pirates
or you're Playing, the phillies or the angels or. Go
make the damn. Playoffs forget who they're playing this team's.
Starting pitching is good enough the question. Is are they
gonna hit. Let's do The. GOOD first from last thursday I.
(01:16:26):
WAS not here Last friday, I Wasn't here. Thursday either
chad brendlefield in so. Let's Do the good. First joe
burrow is, awesome and by the way, if that's, your
biggest takeaway that's fine because What has not happened in
week One The last three? Years, joe burrow playing awesome
(01:16:46):
like there's Lots of reasons why the bengals lost those Games,
three years ago to Pittsburgh, two years ago At Cleveland.
Last year to new, england not exactly great teams but
the biggest reason, Why They lost those. Games joe burrow
is bad. Call it what it is they're Not Gonna
Take Away your joe burrow joe burrow Jersey If you say.
That joe burrow is bad so the whole point behind
(01:17:10):
him playing in the preseason has been to help him
not be. So bad in game one if that's, get
used to getting hit if that's working on the timing with,
his receivers in, Game, situations whatever it is Well what we,
saw on thursday, Would suggest you know what joe's got
a pretty damn good chance. To hit the ground running,
(01:17:31):
week one, doesn't guarantee it of course AND they'll be
playing against i. Guess A non vanilla defense but i
am almost entirely with you If your biggest takeaway from
thursday is that version of number nine is ready to
hit the. Ground running game number. ONE hopefully he stays
(01:17:53):
healthy i could also totally understand if your biggest takeaway
from game One, is The same old bengals because thursday
night felt like. The continuation of last year thursday night
felt like a game. Played Using a familiar. Script joe
burrow is awesome bengals. Move the ball at will they
take Advantage Of, Their Great, playmakers jamar Chase Chase brown
(01:18:16):
most notably tanner. Hudson had a good GAME i'm not.
Sure how i call him they're. One Of their better,
playmakers joe burrow looked. Great the offense was productive. They
STILL lost the game now. I know the result itself
who cares. Thirty four To twenty seven, but the, bengals
brand now Right Now is they're asking joe burrow to
(01:18:36):
take on. Too much of a burden they're asking. Him
to do too Much they're too. Reliant on joe being great.
That was last, year's team by, the way it nearly
worked but. That was last year's team let's just put.
It all on, number nine it almost. Worked but it
Didn't work thursday night against philadelphia felt. Like a continuation.
(01:18:58):
Of that joe was. Awesome some the defense stunk. Call
it what it Is You may believe that al golden,
is going to fix, this get it turned around and
he's going to be the greatest defensive coordinator. In. The
history of football maybe and You may believe that the
bengals strategy of tweak the defense but don't overhaul it. Is,
Going TO pay dividends maybe. And i hope it, HAPPENS
(01:19:19):
but until it does i guess there's a couple of
different things. To ask until it does how? Many games
will they lose how many Games will they lose because? Joe?
Couldn't overcome? Their defense right number two are we really
sure that this strategy is the best one for a
(01:19:41):
defense that? Last year was historically? Bad are we really? Sure?
Are WE really sure man and i will acknowledge the
dudes who. DIDN'T play in that game i certainly well
make mention Of the, fact that, No, Daxel, Goes you,
Know Cam, taylor britt Obviously. Trey hendrickson no bj hill
(01:20:01):
like there's some guys who we expect to see On
the field against. The browns who, weren't there but like that.
That looked and felt familiar.
Speaker 11 (01:20:12):
It.
Speaker 3 (01:20:12):
Looked and felt, on brand by the. Way it wasn't
just boy. The defense gave up, points we saw procedural
penalties we. Saw mistakes on special teams like The whole.
Operation felt like joe's great the. Rest of the operation
stinks thursday did nothing To start. To Change the. Bengals brand,
(01:20:34):
maybe monday's different if. So we'll, TALK about it, but,
Like I Don't know man like i've i've certainly seen
and hear and heard a lot of. Water, Carrying And,
excuse making oh al golden you know it was they
were just. THEY were just vanilla defense i thought that
was supposed to kind of be what they played, once the,
(01:20:54):
season actually starts right like dumb. It, down a little
bit well if you've dumped it down to its dumbest
and the guys can't, Still MAKE plays against backups am
i really to believe that when they don't dumb it
down and they're playing against offenses that, are using their
main guys that the results are? Going to BE significantly
Better Why should i give al golden in this unit?
(01:21:16):
The benefit of, the doubt and more importantly if it
turns out that he, Can't achieve. The same results i'm
sorry if it turns out that he can't achieve different results,
with basically the same guys what does that say about
the people making the decisions with the roster and you
call them Into focus When You Discuss i'm, reading paul
(01:21:39):
dayner junior today. Who's writing about, safety depth, now you
might you know acknowledge that You Can't help it if
geno stone suffers an injury And we all hope that
geno is okay, and it's a hamstring issue that's not
gonna persist. And last into the season but for how
(01:22:01):
many weeks do we talk about that particular? Position before free?
Agency started how many weeks? What date the season end
the season ended like First, or second day Of January like?
Right AFTER new year's right.
Speaker 8 (01:22:20):
Am?
Speaker 3 (01:22:20):
I not mistaken about that like It. The season ended
early january So, from like then to? March it was
safety play how's? IT going to get better i don't
recall anybody answering, that question by going. Uh by not
adding anybody how's the safety play going? To get better
(01:22:43):
this offseason you know what you do, is just bring
everybody back, have a different safeties coach. Have a different
defensive coordinator like You may be the. Biggest bengals apologist
there is you have to acknowledge that particular, approach, Felt
a little shaky right how? Does safety play get better safety? Play?
(01:23:06):
Was bad last year uh just? Bring? Everybody except von
bellback okay so fast fast fast, Forward To eight months,
Later Geno stone Is Hurt. Dejon, anthony and tyson anderson uh.
(01:23:26):
Fill out the depth Chart Here's the. QUOTE from zach
taylor quote i think that's a group that we're looking
to make. Sure we're deep enough there you're just now
looking at Your Safety depth just because geno stone's. Dealing,
with a hamstring injury, LIKE what's frustrating in life i
(01:23:48):
think is when something that you know is a problem
goes unaddressed and then it becomes a. Problem further, down,
the road it's, like well wait a minute you had,
no chance to address that and yet. This is still
a problem. Safety performance was one thing safety depth has
been something that some of us have been, harping on
(01:24:09):
for a while And Now because, of the geno stone
injury it feels like the coaching. Staff is just catching on.
Speaker 8 (01:24:17):
How?
Speaker 3 (01:24:17):
Does that not frustrate you we can apply the same, thing,
to the offensive line right, we can apply you know.
WE'VE talked About Guard play i thought, dylan fairchild HAD
a good Really. Good nfl debut on thursday but the,
(01:24:37):
depth at that position, group the depth at guard the
overall depth on the offensive line being. Written About and
being discussed jalen rivers has had a rough, go over
at a tackle so now they're gonna slide Him Inside
(01:24:59):
the guard and cody ford IS now practicing at gar i,
mean it just musical chairs Deck chairs being arranged and
the frustrating thing is, that's not surprising, at all and
So Unfortunately as well as joe burrow, played in the
(01:25:19):
preseason opener and as, encouraging as that should be it
has to Be frustrating if you're a bengals fan to
come away from that game and have questions that we
Were asking About back in january and february being asked
even louder after they've, played a game this year did
(01:25:44):
they do enough? To address offensive line depth didn't feel
like the answer. In real time was yes now, a game,
after the fact of course the answer is. Not going to.
Be yes, same at safety so unfortunately while there were
lots of Positives, From That game against. Philadelphia Chase BROWN
was terrific shamar stewart. I think Was very impressive love
(01:26:07):
what I'm Seeing. FROM our guy taj brooks i think
the tight end play on this team is. Going to
be quite good evan McPherson. Made a kick from distance
we're still wrestling with the answers to questions we were.
Asking five six months ago with the added caveat of
an issue. At one of those positions how how twenty

pj jewels on the air with us because we're obviously such. Huge,
we're such huge fans look the. DOOR is open for
him i mean it Feels like what's happening in safety
is open, the, door for an opportunity uh for a guy,
lower on THE Depth, Chart and that's pj jewels and It.
Did feel like, on thursday to his, credit he he
(01:29:27):
took advantage as of course we predicted on this show
he would once. We. Found. Out he existed.
Speaker 4 (01:29:33):
True true now let's just see what he CAN do
without this extra, pt he, gets in practice extra reps.
AND extra, game time hopefully i mean we don't have
to play. OUTSCORE everybody, with the offense i mean that
WOULD definitely. Light up the tv screens but if you
(01:29:54):
play a ball control, team on the other side it's
gonna come down. To GETS the ball last and i
don't know if we're going to have to keep one
having the situation. Like WE had last year and i would.
Almost say last Year's team. YOU remember the bengals team
i think it was the eighty seventeen that.
Speaker 3 (01:30:13):
Went, like four and eleven yes and.
Speaker 4 (01:30:15):
A strike short the SEASON but they lost like i
think it was like about nine games in the fourth
quarter because they had the league but they just. Kept
running out of time they could out score people that,
had a ton of injuries and hopefully we don't. Have
a ton of injuries hopefully we. Do let up the
scoreboard hopefully we don't have to, be trying to outscore
(01:30:36):
everybody and we can force some turnovers and. Create some, type,
of havoc, on.
Speaker 3 (01:30:41):
Defense, well You, know everybody Says mister race that the
bengals need to have a league average offense and, They're
going to be fine, AND as a general. Rule, i
agree with that right we expect. The offense to be
elite if the defense, is just simply not awful this.
Team's going to be okay but are they going to
be able to? Be good the fourth quarter because we're.
(01:31:03):
Not gonna have that answer last year they. Were bad
in every quarter but think of how many of those
games last year that were there for the taking where
the defense, just couldn't get a stop or The defense
just couldn't. Give joe the, ball back and so yes
across the course of an entire game or across the.
Course of an entire season just give. Me something that's
league average get off. The field a few times, but
(01:31:24):
in the fourth quarter if they're up for other guy
has the, ball seventy yards to go buck? Ten remaining
In two? Timeouts is al golden's team is his unit
going to be able to get a. Stop and finish
THE game and that's what i. WONDER more than anything
else i don't know that preseason is gonna give us
those answers, regardless Of how they play but i'm curious as,
(01:31:48):
to that against good offenses and they're gonna play a
lot early ish in. The season against good, offenses in
the fourth quarter when the game, is there For the
taking can the? Bengals defense get it, done, the, answer
last year unfortunately. Was of course not.
Speaker 4 (01:32:04):
Well hopefully we could get that changed and turk, Around
for the next season mow and we as fans can,
be very happy about it and. Not just the. Peanut
gallery mightty morning quarterbacks we'll create a.
Speaker 9 (01:32:20):
Satirical wit as to which way is.
Speaker 4 (01:32:24):

With Us let's talk About, key brian hay so Uh
an acquisition from The reds or By. The reds from.
The pirates great defensive player it has been acknowledged that
his back issues have possibly contributed to his. Offensive STRUGGLES
in recent years but i read a piece that was
(01:34:32):
Published During spring training where key brian talked about the
fact that he's, got a chronic back issue and that's
worth paying attention to because he's under team control for.
The rest of the. Decade so let's start there walk
me through the differences between a chronic back issue and
something that is maybe. A, little bit, more, specific.
Speaker 12 (01:34:52):
Well you know first. Thank you, For having me you
know i'm glad that we make. YOU better for your
neck i can't image all the energy you WILL have toward,
me If i did. It but i'm so. Glad i'm
so glad that. Now, back to the business well when,
somebody has chronic back injury, especially at this young age
the question is, obviously what?
Speaker 8 (01:35:14):
Is the, injury what happened you.
Speaker 12 (01:35:16):
Know chronic means that has been happening for a long
timing that has been dealing with. This for, a long,
time You know he's young so i'm talking about probably
things that happen on, the teenagers and. You know, maybe
early twenties you know people can have a bulging disk
that is a protrusion of the desk that is a
tissue between the vertebra that protect bones from hitting each
(01:35:39):
other and protect you. And us for having arthrities other
things that can, happen is a stretch, fracture and a
young age the bone is not as a strong and
people who are doing a lot of physical activities, when
they are you know thirteen, fourteen or to the twenties
while that bone, is getting stronger and mature they can
(01:36:00):
develop these stress reaction or, bruises that become a fracture
and that can be, causing a chronic you know on and.
Off plane, on THE back you know When i was,
with the rest years ago we have a lot of
guy who are chronic stress frassure and. They didn't, have
any issues you know they keep their core the lower back,
strong and and you know they. Didn't, have any, significant
(01:36:23):
issues obviously you, Know he's a position player he's playing
a whole corner on a position With a lot, of
demanding he's a hitter so obviously, those things are you
know can exacerbate some of the issues if he's a.
Chronic stress frashure or.
Speaker 3 (01:36:39):
Not is this the sort of thing that we're going
to have to worry about because he's under team control for,
the rest of. The decade he's twenty eight could this
be the sort of thing that we really wanted to,
monitor when he's, you know thirty thirty. One thirty, two
years old, you, know if it is.
Speaker 12 (01:36:55):
Obviously depending what it is if it is a bulging disk,
and he's developing some art tried it changes because he's
been using his back as, a professional, allst you know you,
monitoring you, do some treatment you know you keep the.
Court a lower, back strong so You know definitely has
been he's been out there that he's been. Having issues
for a while he's he's. Mentioned it in some INTERVIEWS
(01:37:16):
so definitely is something, i need, to be addressed you
know week by week pre season program or Off season.
Program and then ecson program so definitely is going to
haunt him for. A little bit of time so definitely
need to get into a. Program TO minimize the episodes When.
Speaker 3 (01:37:36):
I, ask you about carson spires he's had, a lost
twenty twenty five originally placed on The inter list back
in april. With a right shoulder impingement he was dealing
with a nagging issue in his back right in the
back of the right throwing. Shoulder before the season started
this is an issue that he. Has had come up
before now he's Going To have. To have tommy john
surgery is this sort of thing related to what he
(01:37:57):
had to go through to? Deal with, these shoulder impingements.
Speaker 12 (01:38:01):
You know if it's one, of those THAT you know
obviously when I look at it, and i'm, looking the.
Speaker 3 (01:38:06):
Time you know when.
Speaker 12 (01:38:08):
He's been having shoulder, injury none of my knowledge, he,
Was having elbow injury right so, obviously not on our
knowledge he, WAS having some, elbow pain, i should say
so cool he had some elbow issues that he's trying
to compensate and then the shoulder get the impeachment and
maybe the shoulder was hurting, too much that was addressed but.
The elbow wasn't that much and he, thinks that it's
(01:38:31):
you know a natural pain or something from being throwing
the ball and, he's used to you know, it could
be you, know it's hard. To tell but definitely one
it's not directly. Related to the other one but obviously
elbow injury can put stressing areas on the shoulder because
(01:38:51):
you change your arm slots to trying to protect the
elbow and now, the shoulder. Gets you know, it's suffering
so you know definitely could be something that has. Been't
happening for a while it's just.
Speaker 3 (01:38:59):
That we don't know about one. More To Ask, you
about that's nick lodolo who came out Of a start
against the cubs. Last week with a blister now, we've
ALL suffered a blister but i guess, we should start
by explaining even, though we've all had one. Exactly, what
a blister is yeah you.
Speaker 8 (01:39:16):
Know, when you have a blister.
Speaker 12 (01:39:18):
It, is on the pisches obviously it's probably one of
those fingers that he's putting a stress or pressure in
the ball to get that. Spin that he wants right so,
he may be you know, working on getting you know
more perfect into some type of pitches that when he's putting,
that stress in that finger it is rubbing and robbing
and robbing and creating. An irritation, to that finger we
(01:39:43):
time that skin or that area get a little bit
harder and form a little bit of a. Cattle so
or thicker skin but sometimes, before that skin gets. Figger
you develve the blister, that is, more an injury you know.
To a soft tissue underneath and what happen is you
bleed or uh can of this fluid get there in that.
(01:40:07):
Area and become a blister, so sometimes, we drain it
you know we need to clean. The skin really really
well you drain it and then you protect it and
with time that skin will get. Stronger and stronger and
stronger there is some you know products that you can
use to rub it in the fingers so they can
the skin start getting. Tougher and tougher, with time so
(01:40:30):
you know right now the most important thing, is letting
that blister heal the new the new skins come over so,
he doesn't have the pain and then making the area
a little bit stronger with some you know, crane that
you can apply uh to.
Speaker 9 (01:40:44):
Make it, stronger with.
Speaker 3 (01:40:45):
Time all right. Awesome stuff That's our guy Doctor Angel.
Alaska is from ortho sincy we say this all the
time because it's true That, the great thing about ortho
since he is they have specialists On Locations. All over
the tri state this includes walk in or the pedic
urgent care during the week from nine am To nine
pm and on saturdays from nine am to One pm
(01:41:06):
At both. The edgewood and anderson locations it's easier because
you don't need an appointment and it's definitely cheaper. Than
going to an er when you. Have an Urgent orthopedic injury.
Go to orthosinc Dot com that's. Orthos ci, ncy dot,
com all right as Promised we have a, Stolen This,
from our guy Joe DANIMAN the dean. Of cincinnati tv
sports Anchors This is audio of kyle, schwarber being asked
(01:41:30):
about whether because he's due to be, a free agent
this year whether he would have any Interest. In playing
for the reds you've had A good.
Speaker 13 (01:41:37):
Look at the reds Now. In a series in philadelphia you'll.
See him again this week What's? Your, impression, OF the
reds yeah.
Speaker 14 (01:41:42):
MAN i think they're young i know that they made,
some moves that's the deadline made some some trades for
some pieces that'll be. Here for a, WHILE too so
you know i think that there's A lot of things that.
Cincinnati should, BE happy about you know i think the future.
Here will, be break Them you know. Obviously, that tito's
(01:42:05):
over there now there's a guy who's had, a lot of,
winning experience uh you know played Against Some. UH in
a world series. I know, he's won one you know
he's he knows, what it's like to win and he can, bring, that,
to you know young young inexperienced team that might not have,
been in the postseason yet and he can have that
(01:42:26):
post season. Mentality THROUGHOUT a regular season so i think
that there's a lot of things.
Speaker 1 (01:42:31):
That are that Are.
Speaker 14 (01:42:32):
Looking, Up, here in cincinnati.
Speaker 13 (01:42:33):
Lastly oh You Were Asked at the all star game
about your future and a lot of People made a headline.
About cincinnati and your connection do you have a lot,
Of Friends, who are saying Kyle man just. CONSIDER the
reds next year.
Speaker 14 (01:42:43):
I, mean it was funny, YEAH it WAS you Know
i think i. Think gordon for that, one but he you,
know he, asked the question you know just, if things
will work out would you? EVER think about since that, I,
mean absolutely right that uh he, grew up watching, the
team and you know who wouldn't want to. Play for a,
hometown team but you know there's there's so many different
(01:43:04):
aspects that go in the free, agency and everything like
that and especially where you're playing at, now and how
you know you, feel.
Speaker 1 (01:43:11):
Like, he wanted us.
Speaker 14 (01:43:14):
You know keep. Winning with the, group here, but everything's
that there's unknowns there's a. Business and whatever, happens Happens But.
Speaker 3 (01:43:24):
All Right There's kyle schwarber with joe Daniman Currently Tied
for the national league league in. Home runs with forty
one he has averaged forty three homers over each. Of
the last four seasons on pace to. Hit, over fifty
this year yes. At thirty Two Years old we, want

Speaker 3 (01:44:43):
Tony you and i didn't have Much of a chance
on Friday to talk, about the BENGALS preseason game and
so i hate to do this because they did. Do
So many things well joe burrow did a lot. Of things,
REALLY really well but unfortunately i think, for a lot
of us our first impression from the game last week
was how the defensive. EFFORT and performance looked familiar. I
(01:45:04):
wanted to see. More, i, didn't see it yeah.
Speaker 9 (01:45:08):
Look it was a tough situation regardless when you play
your starters, and the other team doesn't because right. Away.
To lose lose, situation right the offense dominated but a, lot,
of the conversation was, man the offense look great but
they did what they were supposed to. Do against two
and threes if the defense would Have held its own
against philadelphia, and their twos and, threes we would. Have
said great step forward they did what they needed to
(01:45:31):
do against a bad. Group or a lesser group now let's. See,
when the competition rises unfortunately we're talking About A group
of the philadelphia eagles second AND third team guys that,
i THOUGHT were more physical that i thought, got TO
the ball quicker that i thought WERE staying on blocks
longer i expected to, see a, defense flying, around PLAYING
(01:45:54):
free playing confident and. I saw the total opposite it
seemed like a defense. That was a step slow it
seemed like, a defense that was hesitant and a defense
that flat out got punched in, the mouth by another team,
second and third. Team guys which.
Speaker 3 (01:46:07):
Is UNACCEPTABLE it totally is and i think the other thing.
That is, troubling for me, You Know during that game
geno stone left, with a soft tissue, injury and so
you know maybe he's weak to weak and he's going
to be fine for the first game and goes on.
To have a great year but when you spend months
on end talking about lack of safety depth and then
you hear the head, coach during the, weekend acknowledge you
(01:46:29):
know what we've got to make sure, we're deep enough back.
There that's frustrating to me it's frustrating to me that
we're still talking about safety and the depth at that
position when these are things we talked. About, six seven
months ago yeah is there.
Speaker 9 (01:46:44):
Anything worse than the words? Soft tissue injuries as well
because those just always seems to be. The ones that linger,
On but that's the thing, this wasn't a oh boy what's?
Going to be the plan there doesn't. Seem to be
much depth. We're all shocked by this it was man's.
Kind of what we outlined this could be an issue,
if if someone goes down there's just not building. Depth
(01:47:05):
in the safety room there's not a lot of, starts
in that safety room and at the, back end of
your defense you need a little bit of a veteran
presence to kind of calm things down as they get a.
Little crazy on the field this is every bit of
the nightmare scenario that We talked about with this bengals
team of what happens if we talked about, That with
the on line we TALKED about, that on the d
line and we've. Talked about it at safety i'm sure
(01:47:27):
they're going to give some, Guys some opportunities this week
but what happens if? Those guys aren't the answer where
does this team turn next at a position that's going
to be very vital In year. One, of our golden's.
Speaker 8 (01:47:39):
Defense Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:47:39):
