Speaker 1 (00:00):
We do this once a week, typically not on Mondays,
but that's the day we're doing it. We chat with
one of the experts from Ortho since the orthopedics in
sports medicine. The great thing about Orthos, since he is
they have specialist locations and services all over the tri State,
including walk in orthopedic urgent care at five locations with

(00:21):
extended evening and weekend hours in Edgewood and Anderson. Learn
more at Orthosinc dot com. That's Ortho ci Ncy dot com.
Joining us today is the man who fixed my neck,
doctor angel Alaskez from Orthos. Since he is with us,
let's talk about Key Brian Hayes, So an acquisition from

(00:42):
the Reds, or by the Reds from the Pirates, great
defensive player. It has been acknowledged that his back issues
have possibly contributed to his offensive struggles in recent years.
But I read a piece that was published during spring
training where Key Brian talked about the fact that he's
got a chronic back issue and that's worth paying attention

(01:03):
to because he's under team control for the rest of
the decade. So let's start there. Walk me through the
differences between a chronic back issue and something that is
maybe a little bit more specific.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Well, you know, first, thank you for having me. You know,
I'm glad that we make you better for your neck.
I can't imagine all the energies you will have toward
me if I didn't. Well, but I'm so glad. I'm
so glad that. Now back to the business. Well, when
somebody has chronic back injury, especially at this young age,
the question is obviously what is the injury, what happened?

(01:40):
You know, chronic means that has been happening for a
long timing that he's been dealing with this for a
long time. You know, he's young. So I'm talking about
probably things that happen on the teenagers and you know,
maybe early twenties. You know, people can have a budging
disk that is a protrusion of the disk that is
a issue between the vertebra that protect bones from hitting

(02:03):
each other and protect you and us for having arthrities.
Other things that can happen is a stress fracture, and
a young age, the bone is not as a strong
and people who are doing a lot of physical activities
when they are you know, thirteen fourteen or to the twenties,
while that bone is getting stronger and mature, they can

(02:24):
develop these stress reaction or bruises that become a fracture,
and that can be causing a chronic you know, on
and off paint on the back. You know, when I
was with the Rest years ago, we have a lot
of guy who are chronic stress frassure and they didn't
have any issues. You know, they keep their core the
lower back strong and and you know, they didn't have

(02:47):
any significant issues. Obviously, you know, he is a position player.
He playing a whole corner on a position with a
lot of demanding He's a hitter, so obviously those things
are you know, can exacerbate some of the issues if
he's a chronic stress frush or not.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Is this the sort of thing that we're going to
have to worry about because he's under team control for
the rest of the decade, he's twenty eight. Could this
be the sort of thing that we really wanted to
monitor when he's you know, thirty thirty one, thirty two
years old.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
You know, if it is obviously depending what it is,
if it is a bulging disk and it's developing, some
are trinity changes because it's been using his back as
a professional adlest you know, you monitoring, you do some treatment,
you know, you keep the cord a lower back strong,
so you know, definitely is being He's been out there
that he's been having issues for a while. He's mentioned

(03:39):
it in some interviews. So definitely is something I need
to be addressed, you know, week by week pre season
program or off season program and then heasy some program.
So definitely is going to haunt him for a little
bit of time. So definitely need to get into a
program to minimize the episodes.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
When I ask you about Carson Spires, He's had a
lost twenty twenty five, originally placed on the injury list
back in April with a right shoulder impingement. He was
dealing with a nagging issue in his back right in
the back of the right throwing shoulder before the season started.
This is an issue that he has had come up before.
Now he's going to have to have Tommy John surgery.
Is this sort of thing related to what he had

(04:22):
to go through to deal with the shoulder impingement?

Speaker 2 (04:26):
You know, if it's one of those that you know,
obviously when I look at it and I'm looking the time,
you know, when he's been having shoulder injury. None of
my knowledge, he was having elbow injury, right, so obviously
not on our knowledge, he was having some elbow pain,
I should say, so cool. He had some elbow issues
that he's trying to compensate, and then the shoulder get

(04:48):
the impeachment and maybe the shoulder was hurting too much.
That was addressed, but the elbow wasn't that much. And
he thinks that he's, you know, a natural pain or
something from being throwing the ball and he's used to
you know, could be you know, it's hard to tell,
but definitely.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
One.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
It's not directly related to the other one. But obviously
an elbow injury can put stress in area from the
shoulder because you change your arm slots to trying to
protect the elbow, and now the shoulder gets you know,
is suffering. So you know, definitely could be something that's
been happening for a while. It's just that we don't
know about it.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
One more to ask you about. That's Nick Lodolo, who
came out of a start against the Cubs last week
with a blister. Now we've all suffered a blister, but
I guess we should start by explaining even though we've
all had one exactly what a blister is.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
Yeah, you know when you have a blister, it is
on the pitchers. Obviously, it's probably one of those fingers
that he's putting a stress or pressure in the ball
to get that spin that he wants right. So he
may be you know, working on getting you know, more
perfect into some type of pitches that when he's putting
that extress in that finger, it is rubbing and rubbing

(06:02):
and rubbing and creating an irritation to that finger. We time,
that skin or that area get a little bit harder
and form a little bit of a cattle so or
thicker skin. But sometimes before that skin gets figger, you
devolve the blister that is more an injury, you know,

(06:22):
to a soft tissue underneath the skin. And what happen
is you bleed or uh cand of this fluid get
there in that area and become a blister. So sometimes
we drain it, you know, we need to clean the
skin really really well. You drain it and then you
protect it and with time that skin will get stronger

(06:44):
and stronger and stronger. There is some you know, products
that you can use to rub it in the fingers
so they can the skin start getting tougher and tougher
with time, So you know, right now, the most important
thing is letting that blister heal, the new the new
skin come off so he doesn't have the pain, and
then making the area a little bit stronger with some

(07:06):
you know crane that you can apply to make it
stronger with times.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
All right, awesome stuff. That's our guy. Doctor angel Alaska
is from Orthos Since we say this all the time
because it's true that the great thing about Orthos Sincy
is they have specialists on locations all over the Tri State.
This includes walk in orthopedic urgent care during the week
from nine am to nine pm and on Saturdays from
nine am to one pm at both the Edgewood and

(07:31):
Anderson locations. It's easier because you don't need an appointment,
and it's definitely cheaper than going to an er when
you have an urgent orthopedic injury. Go to Orthosincy dot com.
That's orthos ci Ncy dot com.
