Speaker 1 (00:00):
Their final preseason game. Coverage starts Thursday at three on
ESPN fifteen to thirty, official Home of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Thank god, one more preseason game. Let me ask you
a question. If you spend Saturday afternoon and a gorgeous
everybody's hearing Cincinnati, gorgeous Saturday afternoon, one of the few
remaining Saturdays we have in the summer, not much not
(00:30):
much real estate left in the summertime, and the game
started at one o'clock and you sat there for its entirety.
When you are on your deathbed, when you're asked, you know,
do you have any regrets? Is there anything you'd like
to do over? Is is there any day you wish
(00:52):
you could have back? Let me ask you a question.
Do you think that that frame of time, that three
hour stretch on Saturday is is what you're going to
spawn with when when you're asked, like if if you
could go back and do it all over again, do
you have any regrets if you watch that entire three
hour game, front to back, uninterrupted, not on the DVR,
(01:13):
not on the the NFL website, not studying the all
twenty two, but you know, sitting there from like one
to four whenever the game ended on Saturday, going, you
know what this is it and it's gorgeous outside. When
you're on your deathbed, aren't you going to ask for
that time back? I will admit to you. Right around
right before halftime, I said, I got you know, I
(01:34):
got some people coming over. I'm I'm I think I'm
gonna watch the rest of this via fast forward on
Monday morning, and I so, I watched arrest of it
this morning, and I don't I don't really know that
I learned anything. Way. We got some stuff with the
Bengals to get to. And I did watch the part
of the game that mattered, which was when the Bengals
defense more than held its own against Chicago's first team offense.
(01:55):
Tony Pike is going to join Hiss from Bengals training camp.
We're already sort of turning the page from Saturday to
Thursday and really turning the page from Saturday to tomorrow,
when the Bengals have their second joint practice of training camp.
Tony is down there. He'll join us coming up at
three forty five. I'm oegar, this is ESPN fifteen thirty.
The big takeaway is, well, the Bengals are screwed. If
(02:15):
either Logan Woodside or Rocky Lombardy has to play quarterback,
we knew that.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
We've known that all along. They're screwed.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Really, if anybody beyond Joe Burrow has to play quarterback,
If anybody beyond Joe Burrow or Jake Browning play quarterback
for this team, forget it. So if there's one big, major,
sort of thirty thousand foot takeaway from Saturday, I guess
that's it. Evan McPherson. The Bengals made it official over
the weekend. He gets his contract extension. We'll hear from
(02:44):
him later on. A lot more on the Bengals coming
up in a bit reds over the weekend, get embarrassed
three non competitive games. Let's be honest, Bengals Bears was
more competitive and frankly more interesting than anything we saw
in the field this weekend at GABP outscored by KC
a playoff contender, a small market playoff contender, twenty eight
(03:06):
to three, and frankly, nothing that happened on the field
this weekend at GABP matters, well, at least doesn't matter
as much as the story of the weekend. One thing
matters above and beyond all, and that is the health
and the status of Hunter Green. His health, his status,
his future. Frankly, right now more important than anything else.
(03:28):
The Reds are not making the playoffs in twenty twenty four.
That's far from a hot take. It is a prediction
based on having watched this team play one hundred and
twenty four games and understanding how math works. Even if
you want to consider them still in the hunt and
you're still holding out hope they're gonna play in October,
is that gonna happen without Hunter Green? And if you're
(03:51):
ready to advance the conversation to twenty twenty five, well,
can you really have a conversation about twenty twenty five
when we don't know if Hunter Green's going to be
a part of it. Let's be completely honest about this. Okay,
twenty twenty five optimism grounds to a halt if he's
not available.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Now, there is, on the surface some good news.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Nick Krawl went on SIRIUSXMMLB radio on Sunday and said, quote,
it's not as bad as we thought. That is a
direct quote. It's not as bad as we thought. Acknowledged
he's going to get checked again, there's going to be
a second opinion, and said quote, this is a quote.
(04:34):
At this point, it's minimal, minimal. He's going to miss
some time, minimal. We just want to be precautious. Another
direct quote. Also another direct quote quote overall, it's the
best case scenario. So there's some optimism from Nick Krawl.
I will be honest with you, I always am. I
(04:57):
have become insanely skeptical when I hear terms like best case, precautionary,
or minimal. Now, at the same time, none of us
should be leaping to conclusions, none of us should necessarily
assume worst case.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
So where are we.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
We're in a holding pattern and right now, so are
the Reds. If there's a big takeaway from this weekend,
it's remarkable. You know, the Reds sweep the Cardinals, they
win four straight, salvage the last game of that series
in Milwaukee, and I think a lot of folks, myself included,
went into the weekend going, you know what, get about
five hundred, Okay, win another series, then go in the road.
(05:39):
Toronto's not very good. Pirates have been in free fall
for weeks. You know, put yourself in a position, maybe
gain a game or two a week, Let's see where
this thing can go. If there's a big takeaway from
this weekend, it's we fooled ourselves. And it's also that
this team is still so far away from true contention.
And we've known that. I said that on this show.
(06:01):
For all of the advancements, for all of the improvements,
for the influx of young talent the Reds have enjoyed,
they still seem so far away, so far away from real,
genuine contention. Well guess what if Hunter Green is out
for a significant amount of time, They're even further away.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
I'm not gonna tell you that he is. I'm not
gonna tell you that he's not.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
I am gonna tell you that right now, the only
thing that matters as it relates to the Reds ain't
Tonight's game against Toronto. Ain't whether or not Joey Vado
plays in this series, Red's and Jay's up in Toronto.
Ain't about the dude making his big league debut tonight,
not about David Bell's lineups, not about David Bell's job security.
(06:45):
It ain't about the only thing that matters right now,
is Hunter Green gonna be okay? In twenty twenty five.
I hope to God the answer is yes. I mean,
come on, man, let's be upfront about this. Let's be adults.
If you are like me for the most part, I
hope you're not. But if you're like me and you
believe there's a reason for optimism in twenty twenty five,
(07:08):
and you think, you know what, they're not that far
away from at least being a little bit more in
the mix. I think they're a ways away from true
bonafide contention, meaning being among the absolute best in the sport.
I don't think they're that far away from cracking the
relatively low threshold that exists to make the postseason. But
whatever amount of optimism there is for next year, it's
(07:29):
mostly I think based on good young starting pitching. Now
the good young starting pitching goes beyond Hunter Green. Austin
just talked about this. Nick Lodolo's got to get fixed.
I don't know what's wrong with that guy. Saturday night,
he looked like he was throwing batting practice. His defense
didn't help the cause. But over the last month plus,
Nickolodolo has been a train wreck. But there's still I
(07:51):
think we would acknowledge a lot to like about Nick Lodolo,
a lot to like about the good young Reds starting
pitching that starts with Hunter Green, that starts and ends
with Hunter Green, like the boat don't leave the dock,
so to speak. I think that's the second time I've
used that verbage today. This twenty twenty five thing doesn't
take off if Hunter Green's not a part of it.
(08:13):
And I'm sorry, when you read elbow soreness, you at
least have to acknowledge where that could take us, especially
when it's a guy who's already had Tommy John surgery.
I'm not here to tell you that I think that's
gonna happen, that I know that's gonna happen, that I'm
gonna assume that that's gonna happen. I am in a
holding pattern, But I'm in a holding pattern that because
of how the Reds have handled the messaging with so
(08:34):
many other injuries this year, is little skeptical when it
comes to hearing about how it's minimal and hearing about how, eh,
you know what, we're just we're just we're just taking
it easy here. I'm a little skeptical those claims seem
to be dubious. But until we get some word until
(08:55):
we see something concrete. Frankly, maybe until we see Hunter
Green pitch this year for the foreseeable future for an
amount of time that ends.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Who knows when all thoughts.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Of twenty twenty five, at least for me are on hold,
because how can you talk about next year if we
have to at least acknowledge, you know what, Hunter Green's
health is a topic, and if his health is a topic,
his availability for the rest of this year is up
in the air. And then until we're told definitively it's
not up in the air for twenty twenty five. For
(09:28):
my money, it is. That's the most important thing that
happened this weekend. I would argue it's the most important
thing that happened in Cincinnati sports this weekend. That football
game in Chicago. Let's be honest, Who cares there was
some good that came out of it. They looked like
they didn't want to be there. I frankly cannot blame them.
The most significant thing isn't the Red's getting outscored by
(09:49):
the Kansas City Royals to the tune of twenty eighty three.
The most significant thing is the franchise, the staff as
a guy who is living up to the promise. Right now,
you and I are having a hard time speaking definitively
about his status for twenty twenty five, and that is
a major, major problem. And until then there's going to
be pins and needles in anxiety and some skepticism that
(10:11):
skepticism has earned. How many times this year have you
heard you know what best case scenario for I don't know,
Christian and carnassion Strand, or for TJ Friedel the multiple
times he's been put on the inter list, or Matt McLain.
I just I struggle with this man. I saw that
on Saturday and like it felt like getting punched in
the gut, stop me in my tracks. If the Reds
(10:33):
entertain any hopes of jumping back into the race, how
do you entertain those hopes that they don't have Hunter Green?
And more realistically, if you're entertaining hopes that the Reds
can build around that collection of young starting pitching, well
it's not as easy to do when you take away
the best young starting pitcher they have, and what are
the best in all of baseball? Holding patterns suck, uncertainty sucks.
(10:57):
Bengals are dealing with some right now with Jamar Chase
right now being a Reds fan. The only thing that matters,
the only thing that right now defines the experience is
the uncertainty and the holding pattern that we're in regarding
Hunter Green. Seventeen after three show preview video is up
(11:18):
on x thanks to our friends at Emory Federal Credit Union,
your credit union with Hart since nineteen thirty nine. Good
EMORYFCU dot org celebrating their eighty fifth anniversary in twenty
twenty four. Tony Pike in less than thirty minutes on
the Bengals, we will get to the preseason.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Game on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Bengals do get some good news today, at least in
regards to Trent Brown, who is He's practicing, which is
good because the last we had read last week in
Chicago he dealt with backtitanness. The good news is he's
back on the field. Bengals offensive line on Saturday was
another mixed bag, which is not entirely a bad thing.
(11:57):
What are we going to be talking about in a week,
That's my question. I'll ask it next.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
Cincinnati's Bengals and Colts in their final preseason game. Coverage
starts Thursday at three on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official
home of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
I mean, you may think I overrate Hunter Dream. You
may think he's overrated. You may think he's overpaid, which
is absurd. He's the one hundred and first highest paid
starting pitcher in baseball. You may think he is overhyped.
I think that's ridiculous. I think regardless of how you
feel about him, regardless of how you feel about the
level of investment the Reds have made in him, which
(12:37):
is a great investment, still a good investment, I think
we would all agree. Twenty twenty five is maybe doesn't
entirely go up and smoke, but there's smoke, there's flames,
there's fire if he ain't a part of it. And
I hate to do this, man, I am not making assumptions.
(12:59):
I'm hopeful that minimal and best case and all that
verbiage ends up applying up to God he pitches at
some point this year. But I think you have to
leave hope in the possibility, certainly based on how some
things have unfolded injury wise here this year with the Reds,
I think you have to allow for the possibility. Unfortunately
that twenty twenty five could be impacted significantly. So while
(13:22):
we're talking about Hunter Green and an elbow, we will
see twenty four after three on Moegger. Send me a
tweet on x thanks to our friends at Delta Dental.
Delta Dental is building healthy, smart, vibrant communities for all
good at Delta dentaloh dot com. As for the game itself,
it wasn't totally inconsequential.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
I thought, Matt Lee.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
We had Danner on this show on Wednesday, he did
not have Matt Lee in his projected fifty three man roster.
Now that was as of last week. Matt Lee wasn't
working with the twos. Matt Lee was kind of buried
on the depth chart. A guy that a lot of
people are really high on. Our buddy Joe Goodberry first
R does that Bengals on The Brain Show loves Matt Lee.
(14:03):
Matt Lee played played sixty three snaps and looked good.
Jackson Kirkland look good. I don't know the Jackson Kirkland's
a guy you want playing tackle, but there were at
least some linemen who looked like they belong. Matt Lee
and Jackson Kirkland did. But the Bengals got a really
nice bounce back game from from Chris Jenkins, a guy
that I'm excited about. His first game the Tampa Bay
(14:26):
game sort of looked a little in over his head.
The exact opposite against Chicago, Muma Jung Meta continues to
impress on special teams, making a case to make the
squad as a linebacker. The putter battle is a pillow fight.
I mean, it's it's it's kind of interesting. We've We've
(14:48):
gone from the Bengals enjoying some inredible consistency at that
position because of how long Kevin Huber kicked and how
reliable he was to a team that this year had
at one point in camp three punters. How do we
feel about them right now having two punters with one
(15:10):
of them not available. I thought that with an opportunity
to sort of, i don't know, grab the job, take
a big lead in the bid to be the punter,
Ryan Rico left a lot to be desired and obviously,
look the Bears played their main guy. Cincinnati's defense. We
(15:33):
saw some Dax Hill, we saw some DJ Turner. I'm
more than fine with what I see from those players.
Josh Newton had a roller coaster Saturday. That's fine. By
all accounts, Josh Newton's had a great camp. There's some
depth back there. If Josh Newton's like your what, fifth corner,
fourth corner, that's pretty damn good. The big thing was
(15:54):
the quarterback play. Logan Woodside is not a starting caliber
NFL quarterback. Rocky Lombardy is not an NFL quarterback. If
the Jake Browning thing and Zack talked about Jake Browning
will hear from him a little bit later on. Jake
is not going to practice against the Colts tomorrow. They're
still exercising some precaution with his ribs. The word coming
out of Chicago was, you know what he's going to be. Okay,
(16:19):
if Joe Burrow can't play, the Bengals are not a
championship team. If Jake Browning can't play, Bengals probably can't
beat anybody, especially if the other options are Logan Woodside
or that Rocky Lombardi.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
Dude.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
I think the bigger question is, you know, when camp
started and Jamar Chase wasn't practicing, we wondered. And when
I say we, I think most of us who care
about the team or those who cover the team. Okay,
at what point does this hold in, this thing, this
(16:55):
issue between Jamar Chase and the Bengals go from hey,
it's going to be okay to you know what, maybe
for this season it's not. And the answer that I
got when I asked that question was once we get
post preseason, that's where if this is what we're still doing,
(17:15):
that's when it turns into something you have to kind
of worry about. You're gonna hear Adam Schefter from ESPN
a little bit later on, ask what is the central
question to this entire thing? And Look, if you're a
Bengals fan, I understand it makes you uncomfortable thinking about
the idea of Jamar Chase not playing the first game.
It makes me uncomfortable thinking about the Bengals playing the
first two games without Jamar Chase. But it is the
(17:38):
central question to this entire hold in. Is he willing
to miss football games? We're now real football games, not
games that don't count against the Bears, not a game
that doesn't count against the Indianapolis Colts.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
Is he willing to miss games that matter? I e.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
The home opener against the New England Patriots, the season
opener against the New England Patriots. In game number two
against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
And you know, we.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
Asked this back in late July. If we get to Okay,
the preseason is over and now we're in the last
week of August and we've turned the page and now
we're focused on the start of the season. If Jamar
is still doing this, does the conversation about him and
his contract status and his availability. Does the conversation change?
(18:25):
And I think the answer becomes yes. So what I
want to know, and I don't think we get an
answer to this, is are we still going to be
doing this a week from now? Are we still going
to be wondering about Jamar Chase on Monday afternoon of
next week and wondering, Okay, when's he gonna practice? Is
he gonna practice? And Okay, we're twenty days away. A
(18:50):
week from now, will be less than two weeks away.
If he is not practicing by then, how seriously do
we take at least the possibility that he's gonna set
out of games? The matter I asked a poul question
two weeks ago on X thanks to our friends at
(19:11):
United Heartland Insurance, said it was are you worried about
Jamar Chase missing games? And the overwhelming response was no.
Will the answer change in a week. If what we're
doing today, Jamar is not practicing today. If we're doing
the same thing a week from now, phone lines are
open at five point three seven four nine, fifteen thirty
(19:31):
eight sixty six seven two three seven seven six works
as well. Bengals did get late last week the Evan
McPherson deal done. He talked today, you'll hear from him.
We have sports headlines and more and Tony Pike coming
up in just about fifteen minutes on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station.

Tony Pike is there, he'll join us in eight minutes.
Joint workout tomorrow with the Indianapolis Colts, and then the
game against the Colts on Thursday night. That game kicks
(20:16):
at eight o'clock. Pregame coverage on ESPN fifteen thirty begins
with our show at three o'clock. I heard Austin mention
that Trent Brown is back practicing today or back practicing
he's been dealing, I said, Brack practicing. He's back at practice.
That according to Austin, and that's good news because well,
(20:38):
Bengals need them.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
What else do we have? What else do we have?
Bengals did make an official today.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
I am an absolute organized mess or disorganized mess. Chris
Evans unfortunately placed on ir Deonta Smith as well, both
dealing with knee injuries. Team also waving defensive tackle davoncha Maxwell.
Bengals made it official over the weekend and made Evan
mc fearson official today. He signs a three year contract
extension with the team. We talked about that on Friday.
(21:04):
Money Max spoke a short while ago. You'll hear a
little bit of that in just a few minutes. Meanwhile,
Red's and J's tonight, first of a three game series,
starts a seven game homestand for Cincinnati. Julian Agiar will
make his big league debut tonight for the Reds. Kevin
Gosman throws for Toronto seven oh seven tonight on seven

hundred WLW. Christian rowegoes on the sixty day injured list,
with a right shoulder spring and Casey Legumina has been
optioned to Triple A Louisville starting lineup tonight. Red's trying
to snap a three game losing streak, at least trying
to be a little bit more competitive than they were.

Pagoula in the first set for two. The doubles team
(22:31):
of Marcelo Eravallo and Mattei Pavic.
Speaker 3 (22:36):
Believe I said those correctly.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
When the men's doubles event, knocking off Alex Michaelson and
Mackenzie McDonald in the final earlier today. Later on tonight,
it's Francis Tiaffo and Janick Sinner in the men's title match.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
Not before six pm. Not before six pm, Evan McPherson,
This is good news.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
He accounted for all three points the Bengals scored in Chicago.
He gets his contract extension. A guy who certainly very
much worth the draft pick the Bengals used to acquire
him in twenty twenty one. He has been moneymax since
he got here, has made some of the most iconic
and important kicks and franchise history nineteen for nineteen in
the postseason, and deservedly so gets a contract extension from
(23:21):
the team. He is a guy who has stated he
wants to be here. He is somebody who has I
think wrapped his arms around the community since he got here.
In vice versa. Here is Evan a little while ago
about Cincinnati and what makes him want to play at
least the next three seasons beyond twenty twenty four in
the Queen City.
Speaker 4 (23:40):
Yeah, I think I expressed, I mean, even outside of
the stadium, Like we have created such a good community
through church, through friends that we've just met at restaurants,
you know, here and there. But it's just a great
city to be a part of and to be in.
(24:01):
Like I said, I've got a lot of friends outside
of the state, outside of the stadium, outside of the team,
and so just to know that we're going to be
here and get to enjoy those people, it's really exciting.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
Evan McPherson has done a great job on and off
the field since coming to Cincinnati. Bengals used a pick
on Evan in twenty twenty one. Now you know, remember
this is kind of before the Bengals, well it's before
they played in a Super Bowl. It's before the turnaround
that has been engineered since that year really took hold.
And so the Bengals took some criticism for drafting a kicker,
(24:37):
and my take, honestly at the time was, you know, look,
every position has value. If you find an upgrade at
that position and you can weaponize that player at that position,
who cares what position he plays?
Speaker 3 (24:52):
And it does it does feel like and I'm not
sure we're.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
Complete there, but it does feel like in a short
amount of time, like there's a there's a little bit
less of a stigma is the right word. If you
draft a kicker, I believe you're less likely to be
made fun of then you were when the Bengals took
a kicker in the fifth round in twenty twenty one.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
And here's Evan on that topic.
Speaker 4 (25:26):
No, some people do say it might have been because
their rookie year, but.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
You never.
Speaker 4 (25:32):
I think kickers are getting better and better in college
and high school and developing earlier, and so I think
it's a trend of people will being more prepared coming
out of college. And maybe I think in the NFL
now kickers are come more consistent, longer range, and so
I think people are putting more of an importance on
(25:52):
kickers now.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
I mean, look, there's value in every position, and if
you can find in a grade, at a position in particular,
a guy you really like who cares when you take him.
There were three kickers drafted this year, each of them
in the sixth round. But if you go back to
twenty twenty three, the San Francisco forty nine ers took
Jake Moody with a top ninety nine pick. That's a
(26:15):
fancy way of saying they took him with the ninety
ninth pick. Patriots took a kicker in round four, Green
Bay took a kicker in round six, and so I
feel like in large part because of you know, maybe
it's the Justin tuckerrization of the NFL. We've watched the
Baltimore Ravens win a lot of games and be a
very successful franchise. We've seen it happen here firsthand, where
(26:39):
they win games because they've got a guy who can
change how you coach, change how you play, and help
you win games when your offense is not at its
best because you could roll him out there to try
fifty five yard kicks and expect him to make it.
The Browns took Kate York in the twenty twenty two
draft in the fourth round. I know not all these
guys are as good as Evan McPherson, in some cases
(27:00):
may be better. But I do feel like we've changed
the conversation a little bit and maybe we're maybe maybe
meat heads aren't quite as loud as they used to be.
That if you saw a kicker, you know sort of
got all but hurt about it. I don't know, but
Evan McPherson's back wasn't gonna go anywhere. Three year contract
with the team through twenty twenty seven. Tony Pike's not
going anywhere. He's a Bengals practice. He joins his next
(27:20):
on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
Brook to You by Kimball Credit Union on ESPN fifteen thirty,
the official home of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
Tony Pike is there. Bengal's practicing right now with themselves.
They practice with the Colts tomorrow. They play the Colts
on Thursday. Let's begin with today's workout, Tony, what has
stood out?
Speaker 5 (27:43):
Well?
Speaker 6 (27:43):
No, you know, I'm understanding that as I embark on
this training camp report, I'll probably get crushed again for it.
But another bad day for the offense. Defense easily won
the day, and I thought it was another sub par
day from from Joe Burrow. Thought Dax Hill made some
really good plays in the secondary. I thought the defensive
(28:03):
line of the Bengals caused some problems. But the defense
kept the first team offense from scoring anything today. They
wrapped up practice quick.
Speaker 7 (28:13):
Today.
Speaker 6 (28:14):
Offense had to run sprints after the practice because the
defense won so handily. And you know by multiple accounts
that have watched practice now, a weird day for Joe
Burrow mo. He was on and off trying to glove on.
He was constantly squeezing his hand into a fist, did
not push any passes down the field at all. And again,
(28:36):
maybe four days off things are a little bit tighter.
He was using today to loosen things up ahead of
tomorrow's practice. But it just was another day where things
just cut a little bit off down here.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
So let's talk about what he's doing with his hand
and his wrist. It looks like someone who's dealing with discomfort.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
Correct.
Speaker 6 (28:56):
Yeah, And again I think James Rapine has a cup
good videos up on his social media with it, because
he's never seemingly relaxed with his right hand. Again, he's
messing with the glove on and off. But after that,
even right for the moment right before the snap comes,
he still has his right hand hand really twinched, and
(29:16):
you would just want, okay, is it discomfort? Is he
trying to get blood to flow through when when he's
not taking reps from the second team, is there he's
fidgeting a little bit with the wrist. He's squeezing it again,
So again I don't think structurally there's anything wrong. If
there was, he wouldn't be out here doing stuff. You know,
he's openly talked about there are plateaus you hit and
(29:38):
you got to get through. It just feels like maybe
there's one of those plateaus right now because we're going
on you know, throwout Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, the joint practice
and today we're not elite days from Joe Burrow like
we are expected to see. And yes, you have bad days,
you have a couple bad days, but this team can't
afford anymore bad days. It's joint practice tomorrow, final preseason
(30:01):
game Thursday, and then it's full steam ahead of the
regular season.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
Yeah, the first game that counts is in twenty days,
and so if he's at an OTA or if he's
at a workout in May and he's showing discomfort, I
expect that when it's within three weeks of the first game.
Is it at least a little concerning? Now, Joe played
in the game, and so the expectation is going to
(30:24):
be that he'll play in the game. But there's a
difference between him playing in the game and being as
effective as he possibly can be.
Speaker 3 (30:31):
Are you being pulled over?
Speaker 2 (30:31):
Is everything.
Speaker 8 (30:32):
Okay, uh no, there's a strong police presence outside the
practice field.
Speaker 3 (30:37):
Okay, very good.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
There's a difference between him playing and being on the
field in that first game and him being at peak
efficiency and effectiveness, which we have not seen from Joe
the last couple of years. And so, based on what
you're describing and based on what I'm looking at, and
I'm looking at some of the video the James posted
right now, I don't know how you don't at least acknowledge,
you know what, he might be still dealing with some
(30:59):
discs comfort and that could keep him from achieving maximum effectiveness.
Speaker 6 (31:05):
And a good eighty percent. Joe Burrow is better than
pretty much a majority of the quarterbacks in the NFL.
But if this team wants to get to their Super
Bowl aspirations, they need Burrow. They're gonna eventually need Jamar Chase,
and they're gonna need this offense to play in a
much higher clip than what they've shown over the last
week of training camp practices. And to your point, though,
if it's the off season or if it's week one
(31:26):
of training camp, it's one thing to sadly just kind
of working through stuff. This is kind of the point
where you can't work though. The conversation from Joe Burrow
himself Zach Taylor going into camp was they needed to
be better during training camp because they've started too slow.
And here we are, you know, as you mentioned, getting
close to the season, and it still feels like there's
more questions than this team has answers right now that
(31:48):
you have to figure out and to put into a
little bit more perspective with the defense winning today. Bough No,
Jamar Chase te Higgins did not play in any of
the team drills, so there is also that of okay,
you don't have your two top pass catchers and two
of the best in the league rot too. But there
was just a lot of checkdowns. It wasn't really trying
to push the ball down the field. It just felt
(32:09):
a little bit different today.
Speaker 2 (32:10):
All Right, we'll chat again at four forty five. Tony,
thank you so much. All right, Well, Tony Pike, Bengals
training camp. They practice with the Colts tomorrow. They play
the Colts on Thursday. You'll hear it live on ESPN
fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
It's showtime in primetime.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
Spikes the ball in the back of the.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
Etside Bengals and Colts top off their preseason schedule with
a furious four quarters and the Queen's at.
Speaker 9 (32:37):
Sixty three yards. The Magic is Bad.
Speaker 1 (32:40):
One last chance to get the Orange and Black ready
for a Super Bowl run. Back at the Coal from
the Masters of the Mike dan Hood and Dave Labat
coverage Jack's Thursday at three on ESPN fifteen thirty, the
official home of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
All right, find that reform now. This is ESPN fifteen thirty.
My name is Muger. I appreciate you listening today, Tony Pike. Again, Look, man,
I do not.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
Blame you at all.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
If you just want to hit fast forward and let's
get to September the eighth, the first game that counts,
and let's see how Joe Burrow performs in that game,
and let's see how he looks. Let's see if they win.
Let's see if Jamar Chase is on the field. I
do not blame you. There are a lot of people
who have pretty hefty emotional investments in their team who
(33:38):
are not sifting through the minutia of training camp, and
they might not even be watching preseason games, and they're
not obsessing over videos on social media of what's happening
down there, and they don't get a chance and they
don't care to go to training camp practice. You and
I both know people like that that doesn't make them
any less a fan versus somebody who obsesses over all
(34:01):
that stuff. You maybe one of those folks who just,
you know what, get me to the first game and
the rest is just filler.
Speaker 3 (34:10):
That's fine.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
But if you're one of those who wants to know
what's going on in practice and once, I think pretty
informed perspective, I think we live and I you know,
nobody ever likes to give credit to the media. I mean,
I know how I know the climate that we're in.
I think when it comes to sports coverage in this town,
(34:35):
we have some really really good folks doing their jobs,
and they do it with passion, and they do it
with objectivity, and many find different angles to do it.
And I think, certainly, given the resources that don't exist
at certain outlets, that you have people who are doing
(34:55):
yeoman's work, so to speak.
Speaker 3 (34:56):
I ank we have. And when it comes to the Bengals, like.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
There are a lot of really good folks covering this team,
A lot of really good folks covering this team. Some
have different perspectives than others, and some I'm personally closer
to than others.
Speaker 3 (35:16):
But when when when when I when?
Speaker 2 (35:20):
I when I see and hear folks whose perspective eye
value and they're showing something from training camp like I'm
I'm I'm watching Joe Burrow and some of the throws
that James or Pine has filmed him making. He doesn't
look like Joe Burrow. As James points out, he hasn't
(35:45):
thrown with a glove today, but he put one on
in between team drills, first time we've seen that since
training camp started. He wore on the jog over to
individual drills, but took it off to throw. He tweets
out a video and he uses the qualifier and not
trying to alarm just in form. Here's Burrow trying to
connect with Trent Irwin on third down during team drills
(36:07):
and he misses badly. None of this may matter to you,
None of this may mean anything, And that's that's okay.
That the beauty of all the all this gets washed away.
If Joe plays the first game and the Bengals play
well and they win, and Joe plays well and they
win and Okay, we're moving on to Kansas City. We're
moving on to what's next. The reality is he is
(36:29):
a player coming off a significant injury, and almost to
a degree, unprecedented injury, and one that at the time
it was acknowledged this could linger into his preparation, which
they're still in the preparation for the twenty twenty four season.
He is We talked to Tony Pike every single day. Now,
(36:51):
you might not like Tony. I don't know how you don't,
but you might. You might not like Tony's show. I
don't know how you don't. But he's gone down there
and covered training can for us every year with the
exception of the COVID year when he wasn't allowed I
think since twenty nineteen. And you know, the guy played
the position at a really high level. The guy also
(37:13):
dealt with high end injuries. I shouldn't have to say this.
He knows what he's talking about. There is not a
human being on earth that I know that I that
I trust more for their opinion of quarterback play, quarterback performance,
(37:34):
quarterback preparedness, quarterback health more than Tony. If you just
want to be told that everything is okay, or if
you just want to hit fast forward and you know what,
let's see what happens when the Bengals play the first game. Well,
that's okay, but then coverage from training camp practice is
(37:55):
probably not for you. Let's be honest, it's probably it's
probably not going to be your jam. For everybody else,
let's confront here the possibility, based on what is being
shared on social media, based on what is being conveyed
from the people who are there, that we could still
(38:19):
be dealing with a quarterback as great as he is,
as talented as he is, as much as we all
love him, which Bengals fan doesn't love Joe Burrow, that
three weeks before the season begins might not quite be
where he would like to be, where the Bengals would
(38:41):
like him to be, and where you and I would
like for him to be. In three weeks, that may
not matter. The first Monday after the first game, maybe
we were talking about how Joe torched the New England Patriots,
left a bad team looking hapless and helpless, and now
he's gonna get He's gonna go to Kansas City and
(39:02):
out duel Patrick Mahomes. But we're not there yet, and
so all we can do is process what we are seeing,
what we are.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
Being told by real, smart.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
Credible people, and what we know about Joe Burrow coming
off an injury, and at least at least for me,
wonder could we see a player who in Game one
is on the field and playing but not quite yet
where he needs to be. And if that's what we
(39:44):
are dealing with When we dealt with that last year
in the first game, how did that go not good?
When we dealt with that in the first game two
years ago? How did that go not good? Albeit in
both situations, I believe the opposition for the Bengals was
(40:07):
better than the team they'll play Week one. The Patriots,
I think are gonna be miserable this season. And so
maybe the Bengals can beat the Patriots and survive Week
one and they win the game, I don't know, sixteen
to nine and McPherson makes three field goals and the
defense holds its own and Burrow's merely a caretaker. Maybe
that's the case. But what I know right now is
(40:31):
smart people are wondering, you know, is Joe or he's
going to need to be in three weeks And it
feels like based on some of the throws that we see,
some of the things that we hear, we also hear
about frustration. It feels like, despite what Joe may say
(40:51):
publicly that the answer is, yeah, he's still dealing with
something here.
Speaker 3 (40:56):
That's okay, that's okay.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
But he was dealing with something in the first game
last year and stunk, and he was dealing with something
in the first game two years ago and stunk. And
so one of the questions that has to be asked is,
if this continues, can a less than one hundred percent
(41:21):
Joe Burrow help deliver victories in the first two games
of the season when he couldn't last year and he
couldn't two years ago.
Speaker 3 (41:33):
It's a fair question.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
It's not a question meant to elicit panic or evoke
bad takes or make anybody feel like this team can't
achieve what so many of us wanted to achieve, but
based on trustworthy people, smart people. Right now, August nineteenth, today,
(42:01):
Joe Burrow is coming off as somebody who's not quite
where he would like to be, which is exactly what
he was when he played and turned the ball over
five times against the Steelers two years ago, which is
where he was when he took the field in the
(42:22):
rain against the Browns last year and played terribly. Can
the Bengals win those first two games? If Joe Burrow
is not at his best physically, if he's not completely
where he needs to be physically, this could be a
mood point, could be a totally moot point, either based
on him playing great despite not feeling one hundred percent,
(42:44):
or between now and then he starts to feel better
and he starts to look more like himself.
Speaker 3 (42:51):
Again.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Like, if you want to ignore all of this, that's
your prerogative, man, Like I understand it, dude, like I do.
But if you want to know what's going on down there,
don't get mad at Tony for telling you what he
watches and observes. I'm sorry. I don't get mad at
(43:14):
James or pen or anybody else who's covering this team
for merely sharing what's happening down there. You're allowed to
draw your own conclusion. Your own conclusion might be Joe
is going to be fine. Okay, Fine, I hope to
God you're right. I'm not ready to make a conclusion.
What I can do is wonder, okay, if he's not
(43:36):
where he needs to be, today is does he stand
a good chance of being where he needs to be
in three weeks?
Speaker 3 (43:42):
I don't know that answer. You don't know that answer.
Speaker 2 (43:44):
And if he's not where he needs to be, can
he still play effectively enough to win? Chances are the
first game against the Patriots, answer is yes.
Speaker 3 (43:51):
What about Week two?
Speaker 2 (43:54):
Bengals track record in Week two games over the last
three years has been miserable that game against the Chiefs.
It's not the end all and be all, but it
could reverberate all season long.
Speaker 3 (44:05):
So I don't know.
Speaker 2 (44:06):
I'm I like I feel like with Joe Burrow, I
am where I am with Hunter Green right now. I'm
in a bit of a holding pattern with Joe. You know,
we want to know week one, is he gonna be
one hundred percent throwing darts, dropping dimes, looking in control.
He's gonna be on the same page with Jamar Chase.
I hope so, But it it feels like we're in
a little bit of a holding pattern. A little bit
of a holding pattern. He's playing, He's played in a
(44:29):
preseason game week and a half ago. He is going
through practice. It's not like he's sitting out, but there
does seem to be something that's not quite there. If
that's the case in three weeks, is this team gonna
be okay? And then with Hunter Green, this was the
story of the weekend with Hunter Green, this twenty twenty
five thing doesn't take off. Sorry, I'll make it that simple.
(44:52):
If and again we're dealing with limited information here. We're
dealing with built in skepticism because of how some of
the injuries have unfolded this year, and that's maybe unfair
this twenty twenty five thing, where the idea is for
the Reds to win the division at least, I would think,
and to get to the postseason and win big.
Speaker 3 (45:10):
If Hunter Green's not a part of that, good luck.
Call it what it is, dude.
Speaker 2 (45:13):
He's a staff as it's one of the best pitchers
in all of baseball, was being talked about as a
cy young candidate. There is nobody on the staff right
now as good as him. Other guys have to step up,
and that would be the case regardless of what's happening
with Hunter Green and Man in three weeks. This may
go away by the middle of September. Maybe Hunter Green
is pitching, maybe he's throwing full and complete bullpen sessions.
(45:34):
In good Year in February. Maybe this is a mere
footnote in an otherwise awesome career. But what we know
right now about Hunter Green is he is on the
injured list with an elbow problem. What we also know
is he's had Tommy John surgery before. What we know
is if he has to have that procedure, he's basically
done for next year. And if he's done for next year,
(45:56):
I hate to say it, it kind of feels like
the Reds are too. It's not quite the same as
Joe Burrow, but we're in a holding pattern with both.
Both are of utmost importance. With Joe, I don't think
the questions outweigh the answers, but there are significant questions
with Hunter right now. The questions outweigh the answers. Fun
(46:19):
start to the week eighteen after four o'clock five one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty is our phone number we got to work
in a poll question thanks to United Heartland Insurance.
Speaker 3 (46:27):
Will do that on X.
Speaker 2 (46:28):
Also, the UC Bearcats Scott Sadderfield is going to be
on our show tomorrow, I think in the five o'clock hour.
The Bearcats play their first game in twelve days against Towson.
What you need to know if you're going to or
planning on going to Knippert Stadium this season coming up.
In just about fifteen minutes, Brennan and Jones on Baseball,
and another check in with Tony Piken and Man, I
(46:48):
want you to listen to every second of this show.
I want you to listen to this radio station twenty
four hours a day. It's good for my job, it's
good for the company, it's good for my livelihood. But
if handling bad news three weeks before the opener is
something you just can't do, that's fine. Right around four
forty five, we're gonna talk with Tony. He may have
(47:10):
great news, but he's not gonna lie for you. It's
not gonna make something up just to make everybody feel better.
And he is gonna pass along what he is seeing,
what he is hearing, and what he knows based on
his expertise when it comes to the quarterback position. Nineteen
after four This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station.
Speaker 1 (47:29):
Preseason game coverage starts Thursday at three on ESPN fifteen thirty,
the official home of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (47:36):
Twenty three after four, This is ESPN fifteen thirty on Moleger. Meanwhile,
Jamar Chase is not practicing today. Trent Brown is, so
is Sam Hubbard. That's good news. Both those developments are
good news, you know. And again, the Jamar Chase thing,
you may believe this is, this is something that's not
gonna matter once the games begin. Adam Schefter Adam Scheffer
(48:00):
from ESPN, was at Fanatics Fest, which was a big
convention for fanatics over the weekend. He did his podcast
from there. I'm not sure who the other voice is here,
it doesn't matter. Here is Adam Scheffer being asked about
the Jamar Chase situation over the weekend.
Speaker 10 (48:18):
So I've been worried about Ceedee Lamb, Adam, but topic
number three, let's move on with this. I feel like
maybe we should be more worried about Jamar Chase now.
It was like the Ceedee Lamb worry. Are we worried
about Jamar Chase in Cincinnati?
Speaker 9 (48:31):
The guy in the Bengals had are you worried about it?
Speaker 3 (48:34):
He's not worried.
Speaker 9 (48:35):
I'm telling you right now. Bengals fans, they keep.
Speaker 5 (48:38):
Saying that they're taking the line of zach Tella. There's
a plan They're taking it day by day and that's great,
and look, everybody wants to see that situation result.
Speaker 3 (48:47):
Nobody wants it to play out.
Speaker 5 (48:50):
But there are some things about it that I find
a little bit curious. Like Sedney Lamb has one year
left on his contract, Brandon Iouk has one year left
on his contract. It's easier to get a deal done
when the guy's got one year left, and both sides.
Speaker 9 (49:04):
Have been working to get it done.
Speaker 5 (49:06):
What we know with Jamar Chase is that he wasn't
taking part in mandatory mini camp, hasn't taken part in
training camp, left practice the other day, has two years
left on his contract. YEP, with a team that has
said the president, Mike Brown has said he doesn't believe
this is the time to.
Speaker 3 (49:24):
Do a deal.
Speaker 5 (49:25):
Now.
Speaker 9 (49:25):
I think that they'd like to get it done.
Speaker 5 (49:28):
But the way I understand is there hasn't been a
whole lot of conversation between the two sides. So my
question is how far is Jamar Chase prepared to take this?
Speaker 2 (49:43):
Yes, now, Adam asks that, and folks I guess on
social media get mad at him. I ask that, and
nobody gets mad at me. Because it remains it remains
the central question to all of this.
Speaker 3 (50:00):
Are we going to be doing this in a week?
Speaker 2 (50:02):
And if we are doing this in a week, how
much does it intensify that question? Is Jamar willing to
miss football games that count? And to me games plural
matters more than anything else. On the Adam Schefter Podcast,
one of the bigger guests this weekend was Chad Johnson,
(50:24):
and well, here's Chad and Chefty talking about this Jamar
Chase situation in Cincinnati, or maybe not, I guess not,
but Chad Johnson doubled down on the suggestion that Jamar
(50:47):
is not going to play without a new deal.
Speaker 3 (50:48):
All right, go ahead and hit that.
Speaker 2 (50:53):
Bottle.
Speaker 11 (50:53):
CNBN paid like a number two, and Jamar's deal will
get done probably sometime this week. Oh, definitely before the
season starts. Absolutely wow, Absolutely yes.
Speaker 3 (51:05):
Definitely definitely definitely.
Speaker 9 (51:07):
Before the season is definitely. Why do you say definitely
getting done?
Speaker 11 (51:10):
Because I just know, because I'm sure Joe Burrow will
probably grow frustrated at some point not having his top
receiver oute there. Burton is good, Higgins is good, but
that offense isn't complete unless you know he's out there.
Speaker 9 (51:23):
And for me, I'm kind of upset.
Speaker 11 (51:25):
He hasn't had training camp because it's it's different to
practice by yourself and you could train three hundred days
out the year and those those other sixty five.
Speaker 9 (51:35):
When you're in camp, it's completely different.
Speaker 11 (51:37):
You know, being pushed around, tugged and pulled, and you
know in destructuring environment is different than training on your own.
I don't care how much of it in shape you are.
I would have much rather him being at camp getting
the work in so it makes it that easy and
hit the ground running when the season starts. But it's unfortunate.
Speaker 5 (51:54):
So if in fact Jamar Chase does shine.
Speaker 3 (51:57):
This week, he will he will.
Speaker 9 (52:00):
Yeah, do we know how to attribute this? To chat
out your Senko?
Speaker 11 (52:03):
Like, so, I gotta say, I mean just just with
timing and understanding. Burro, I'm the quarterback himself, will probably
be like, Okay, enough is enough enough enough, Let's let.
Speaker 5 (52:16):
Me take you to us place you alternative if for
some reason this deal doesn't get done this week or
this season.
Speaker 1 (52:25):
He's not touching the field.
Speaker 9 (52:26):
He's not touching the field.
Speaker 1 (52:27):
Touching the field.
Speaker 11 (52:28):
This is this is one of the certain players you
know they can separate their love for the game in business,
if it was me, I'd have been out there practicing
dealer no deal, I don't care. But on the business
side of things, Jamar and his team they understand now
and this is the only way to get deals done.
Ceedee Lamb is doing the same thing. Brandon Nyuka is
(52:51):
doing the same thing. You have to let the owners
know that you're able to separate the love for the
game the business like the owners do.
Speaker 9 (52:58):
So again, I tried to get this answered.
Speaker 5 (53:01):
Nobody wants to say it, but you, in your position,
you could say it because you are who you are. Yes,
if he doesn't have a deal done by week one,
you don't think he's playing.
Speaker 1 (53:11):
No, absolutely not.
Speaker 2 (53:12):
All right, there's Chad Johnson with Adam Schefter, and you
could do whatever you want with that. You could take
that entire conversation with a grain of salt. I think
number one, it speaks to their being a belief that
Joe Burrows at some point going to get tired of
this thing not happening and will effectively say go get
the damn deal done, which we all wish would happen.
(53:35):
I think it also speaks to what is the central
question to this entire hold in which is will it
continue if Week one gets here, the season arrives, and
the deal's not done, and Chad tends to believe the
answer is yes. Twenty nine and a half or four o'clock, ESPN
fifteen thirty, Tony Pike in just about fifteen minutes. If
(53:58):
you're a Bearcat fan, what you need to know this
year about going to different stadium? On ESPN fifteen thirty.
That's next on ESPN fifteen thirty. Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 2 (54:33):
The first of the Bengals five primetime games will take
place in Week three, when the Washington Commanders come to
pay Course Stadium for Monday Night football. Cincinnati will be
looking for its first win over Washington in twelve seasons,
and they'll play a team that has a new head
coach in Dan Quinn and a rookie quarterback in Jayden Daniels.
The Commanders lost their last eight games in twenty twenty three.
(54:56):
But they were one of the NFL's most active teams
in free agency, and they'll be looking to jump start
their rebuild in front of a national audience. It's the
Bengals hosting the Commanders on Monday night, September twenty third.
Speaker 1 (55:10):
Oh, that's more on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home
of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (55:17):
From fifteen twenty four from five o'clock. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty. I'm oegar. We'll go back and check with
checking with Tony Pike in ten minutes. By the way,
Tony and his two thousand and eight teammates, the team
that made UC's first BCS Bowl game, played in the
Orange Bowl against Virginia Tech, will be honored before the
Bearcats play pit That'll be the week two game at
(55:41):
Knippert Stadium. First things first, you see, he opens up
the season in twelve days a home battle against Towson.
Speaker 3 (55:47):
Where White plan ahead.
Speaker 2 (55:48):
If you're going where White, it's it's always fun to
talk about what's new and exciting at Knippert Stadium, and
so to do that with us is Anthony Defino. He
is a Deputy ad and in charge of external relations
and tell us what's new at NIPPERS stating this year?
What is it like in the office when there's like
two weeks to go before the first football game?
Speaker 12 (56:11):
We thank thanks for having me. We're excited. I'm looking
out the window right now and watching football practice and
behind them, I'm watching people clean the bleachers. So that's
what it's like. We're all preparing in some way, and
it is. I tell it's my favorite time of year
because the anticipation of what we're about to do, and
for football, that's let's go play football games. For someone
(56:31):
like me, it's we're welcoming. You know, thirty five thousand
plus in about twelve days, so we're pumped.
Speaker 2 (56:37):
And talking to me means you get out of bleacher
cleaning duty.
Speaker 12 (56:41):
Correct, I'm out of that and we go to potentially
powerwashing soon who knows. But we're getting the stadium ready.
We have a few upgrades that we did. We had
to do a whole ada expansion so we have more
accessible seats, which we're we're happy about. You're going to
(57:01):
see that change on the concourse, and with that brought
a whole news section of what we call our lower
lower seating, so visibly you're going to see a different
stadium in some areas, so that's a big plus and
we're excited for that.
Speaker 3 (57:14):
Yeah, No, I.
Speaker 2 (57:14):
Can't wait twelve days from now kickoff against Towson at.
Speaker 3 (57:18):
Two point thirty.
Speaker 2 (57:20):
I read about and I hear about Red and Black concessions. Now,
I will admit there was a presentation before the media
availability for Scott Saderfield and I missed this part of it.
So I'm interested in what are the Red and Black concessions.
Speaker 12 (57:34):
Red and Black Concessions are powered by our new partner,
Siedexo Live. So we changed our concessionaire over the summer,
work extensively to find the best fit for a partner,
and we have rebranded our concession team as Red and
Black Concessions. So what we've identified is looking throughout our stadium,
(57:55):
identifying more points to sale, more opportunities for our fans
to to get those staples that they need in a
very quick manner, but also try to get a little
bit more creative. So I think this year, you're you're
gonna smell more smells, meaning you know, there might actually
be grills out there. You could smell the popcorn, you
can smell the hamburgers being made. I think we're we're
gonna try to lean a little bit more fresh this year.
(58:19):
Definitely have some more novelty items, uh, you know, family
friendly pricing behind the student section uh and certainly for
student section pricing. But you'll you'll see some of that
going on. I think you have to take a lap
of Knippert Stadium to to find some of those little
notes and crannies that we're gonna We're gonna try to
(58:39):
shove as many mobile carts in those areas so you
might find more skyline stands. It's important, you know, certainly
everyone loves their skyline, So if every every concession stand
was skyline, would we'd be fine. But we can't produce
that much.
Speaker 6 (58:53):
In one sitting, so.
Speaker 12 (58:55):
You're you know, please walk around. You there's gonna be
you know, a drink that will have for every game
that will rotate. But we're trying new and creative ideas,
and I think it's mostly because we're listening to our
fans over the few years about about how to continually
refine what we do.
Speaker 3 (59:12):
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Speaker 2 (59:13):
You started the new way of people getting their tickets
and downloading the entire strip worth during baseball season that's
going to continue through football season, which I think for
a lot of folks can eliminate something that becomes quite
a pain in the neck.
Speaker 6 (59:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (59:29):
No, you've done your homework. So what that's called is
are all in one path through our ticketing software partner,
So as you go into your app and your season
ticket holder, instead of fumbling through each game, you're going
to have one bar code for the entire season. So
that if that suits your needs, awesome. If you like
the old way of doing it, that also works. It's
just another option for our fans to be able to
(59:51):
get to their tickets as quickly as they can when
they pull up to the gates and they have their
phone out ready to be scanned. But that that's something
we're rolling out. Certainly, we always welcome feedback on anything
like that that we're doing that's new. We love to
hear feedback, great feedback. But also you know, if there's
any slow down in the process, et cetera, you know,
we're always all ears to help refine that process as well.
Speaker 2 (01:00:14):
The first game in twelve days is Spirit Day. What
does that involve.
Speaker 12 (01:00:19):
We welcome out all of our cheer band dance teams,
you know, high school's youth doesn't matter, so that's been
a pretty significant day for us. It's always fun to
see local high school bands come out and local cheerleaders
and dance teams perform with our team. So it's a
great way for us to connect with our community, get
(01:00:40):
different people into our stadium for a game like tousand.
I think that's that's a very family focused day for us,
so it's a perfect day to do that on. But
it's great just to see, you know, how those groups
come and enjoy the game day and go through those paces.
But hopefully they're bearcats down the line. So that's where
we're going to start. Come out to this year and
(01:01:02):
Spirit Day we call it, and enjoy it with your family.
Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
You know, last year and we certainly wish that, you know,
what would have happened on the field would have gone better,
But it was a lot of fun last year with
you know, people from the Big twelve coming in and
just chatting with the other radio crews and fans from
other markets that would come in and experienced Knippert Stadium
for the first time and they would say like, dude,
I didn't know all right, I saw it on TV.
(01:01:25):
Had had no idea, and that was in the year
where we obviously, you know, wish Bearcats would have won
more games. I'm kind of curious at your level when
when you talk to people who took in Knippert and
the game day atmosphere for the first time, what sort
of things did you hear.
Speaker 12 (01:01:41):
I remember running into a group of Oklahoma fans and
they were walking around on Friday before the game, and
they were impressed just the central location of our stadium
and how part of campus it truly is. I mean,
it is the heartbeat of campus, and they were just
amazing that, hey, I could just walk down on the
(01:02:02):
field as they get twenty open, twenty four to seven essentially,
but we heard that so often that they couldn't believe
how ingrained and how intertwined the stadium is in the
history right to the main part of campus. So when
you get to the game day and you know you're greeting,
well not greeting people, but when they're leaving, hey, thank
you for coming, Nipper, enjoy your time home, get home safe.
(01:02:26):
They were pumped about the experience, win or lose, it
is one of the most unique experiences in college football.
You know, thirty five thousand plus sounds like eighty sounds
due sounds like one hundred because of the way the
stadium set up, and I think we put on a
great show. I think our teams work extremely hard to
make sure the music's always bumping, the band's always playing,
(01:02:48):
and there's always energy in the stadium, to the point
that I have to give credit where credits due. I
can't name another school that sells out their student section.
For the last four years. Four years straight, we sold
out a student section, and they show up, they show
up early, and they bring the energy. And that's what
really drives it is whatever's coming out of that end
zone really resonates throughout the rest of the stadium. So
(01:03:09):
you know, I think people walk away for the first
time seeing how special it is. And I like the brag.
I've been around to pull out of stadiums and this
is my favorite one because of the energy that you
get out of the game day.
Speaker 2 (01:03:22):
I'm biased, but mine too. Cannot wait first game of
twelve days. By the way, season tickets and single game
tickets are available, go Bearcats dot com slash tickets. It's
always a blast that first game in Knippert Stadium. I
cannot wait, we'll see you then, Anthony, thanks so.
Speaker 12 (01:03:37):
Much, thank you, thanks for having us anytime.
Speaker 3 (01:03:41):
You got it.
Speaker 2 (01:03:42):
Two thirty a week from this Saturday, Bearcats versus towsand
Scott Saderfield joins us tomorrow. I think right now we've
pegged them down for five to twenty. That may change.
Stay with us. Tony Pike joins us next.
Speaker 3 (01:03:57):
Falls coming. You have a lot to prepare for it.
Back to school Fan.
Speaker 1 (01:04:01):
Training camp report group to you boy, Hollywood Casino Lauras
for oh of ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of
the Bengal Okay.
Speaker 3 (01:04:10):
Tony Pike is with us. Another training camp report.
Speaker 2 (01:04:13):
Bengals wrapping up a practice they will practice with the
Colts tomorrow. An hour ago, you were sounding the alarm.
You were making everybody panic. You were forecasting a two
and fifteen season because Joe Burrow is not comfortable with
his hand.
Speaker 3 (01:04:27):
Do you want to walk any of it back?
Speaker 6 (01:04:30):
I'm not ready to walk back, but I just need
to see more. Like like you know, so much of
the Jamar Chase pushback is or the Joe Burrow pushback
is crazy to me because Joe is the first person
that wants to hold himself at these high levels. He
is not in a situation where he wants to be
a great. He wants to be the best quarterback in
(01:04:51):
the NFL, and that is the standard we have seen
from Joe Burrow when he's at his best. So when
he's not at that standard, when he's not at the
very top, it is evident in the way he's practicing.
It's also evident that it's harder for the offense to
practice when t Higgins doesn't do any team drills. Jamar
Chase has not been out there at all, and the
defense as a whole is playing better. So you know,
(01:05:13):
it's not up to the standards that is expected with
Joe Burrow as the highest paid quarterback in the NFL,
in an offense and a team that has Super Bowl aspirations.
In now three weeks until the start of the season.
Speaker 2 (01:05:26):
You were asked this by Austin toward the tail end
of your Guys Show. He asked if you want to
see the starters play on Thursday, and you said, yes,
does that include Joe Burrow?
Speaker 6 (01:05:37):
No, just because I think there's so many unknowns with
the guys protecting him. Still, I still think they're working
through depths. I don't know because Trent Brown practice today,
I don't know yet if you'll see Trent Brown because
of the back tightness or do you play safe with that?
And if he doesn't play, then surely you're not putting
Joe Burrow in there. So I think if you can
(01:05:57):
get enough good work done tomorrow, you don't have to.
But there are still some camp battles that this team
has that I think you need game reps to try
to figure out who those guys are going to be
in those certain roles.
Speaker 2 (01:06:10):
So we haven't talked about the preseason game on this show,
not that it's worth spending a lot of time on,
but do you have one or two takeaways from what
we saw on Saturday afternoon?
Speaker 6 (01:06:21):
I thought in limited reps and I thought it was
the right decision. Listening to Zach after the game, I
thought both DJ Turner and Dax Hill played well. I
thought Dax Zill had another good day today on top
of that, and I thought, you know, it was interesting
MO because I had Charlie Goldsmith on my show Friday
and he said the one position he was still the
most curers I had the most questions about was the
interior defensive line and I thought Chris Jenkins and the
(01:06:44):
interior part of that defensive line did play much better
than what they showed in the Tampa game. So the
score didn't show, but I thought there were some positives
to take away from that game against Chicago and what
was bad conditions you want to get out of their
healthy and for the most part, the Bengals did. But
I did think the defense took a pretty good step forward. Offensively,
(01:07:05):
what are you going to learn with Logan woods Logan
Woodson is not factoring into anything with this team this year.
Neither of the running backs played. The weapons weren't there.
I wasn't expecting much offensively. I thought defense did do
some good things.
Speaker 2 (01:07:17):
All right, we'll chat again at five forty five, Tony,
Thank you so much. Don't forget Bengals and Colts on
Thursday night. That game kicks off at eight o'clock and
you'll hear it live on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:07:28):
Time now for Brennan and Jones on.

Speaker 8 (01:08:06):
This report is.
Speaker 12 (01:08:07):
Spun to qualify you found Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:08:12):
What's up, mullagg or ESPN fifteen thirty, Thank you for listening. Busy,
busy day today and a lot's happening. Let's begin with
the Bengals. Tony Pike one more time at Bengals training
camp practice. No Jamar chasewitch was gonna be expected. Joe
Burrow practiced. The results were uneven. Sam Hubbard back, Trent
(01:08:34):
Brown back. Those are good things. No real major takeaways.
Little Narrumo's defense did a nice job. The guys were
on the field did a nice job. And I think
there was a really good healthy battle between Dax Hill
and Dj Turner. I think there's a wealth of young
talent there in the secondary. Josh Newton had a very
up and down Saturday offensively. Let's be honest, it was
(01:08:55):
a disaster and not a disaster meaning it's going to
be a disaster once the season starts. But if you
watched on Saturday thinking, you know what, Bengals can move
the ball and make this worth my while with Logan
Woodside and Rocky Lombardi playing quarterback, that didn't happen. That
was a mess, totally unwatchable. Doesn't matter. Here's what does matter.
Joe Burrow doesn't look like himself at practice. And that's
(01:09:18):
not the first time we have said that. This is
according to many. My eyes and ears down there are
the eyes and ears at Bengals training camp practice during
this show or for this show, and that's Tony Pike.
Everybody's allowed a bad game. Everybody's allowed a bad practice.
A player coming off an injury is allowed a bad practice,
he's allowed discomfort. There are still twenty days between now
in the first game. It is completely reasonable to be
(01:09:42):
measured when it comes to hearing and reading and watching
what's happening down there and either drawing a conclusion or
being unwilling to draw a conclusion. Players allowed to have
bad practices. Players who are coming off injury, are allowed
to have discomfort, experience discomfort.
Speaker 3 (01:10:00):
Joe has talked about that. But here's the thing.
Speaker 2 (01:10:04):
The last two years, Joe Burrow has played the first
regular season game, and you could love Joe Burrow and
still acknowledge that his performance in both games not very good.
Against the Steelers in that game two years ago, he
did some good things. He also had five turnovers, four picks.
(01:10:24):
He did nothing well, and he had plenty of company
on his team. He did nothing well in that game
against the Browns to open the season a year ago.
Speaker 3 (01:10:33):
So there are still twenty days.
Speaker 2 (01:10:36):
I go back and forth on wanting to see him
versus not wanting to see him in the last preseason
game on Thursday. But there are still twenty days. There's
still time for Joe to feel like, you know what,
I'm good. I'm not going to be squeezing my hand anymore.
I'm not going to be going back and forth with
wearing a glove not wearing a glove. I am fine there.
(01:10:56):
I have no inhibitions. I can turn it loose. And
by the way, We've seen him do that a little
bit during training camp practices. I thought he looked fine.
He didn't look razor sharp, but I thought he looked
fine in the one preseason series that he played against
the Bucks last Saturday. And so maybe in twenty days
Joe Burrow doesn't just play, but he plays great and
(01:11:18):
he plays free of discomfort. We're all hoping for that,
We're all rooting for it. We do have to acknowledge
that it wouldn't be that shocking to find out that, uh,
less than twelve months after suffering an injury that required surgery,
he is still dealing with let's just call it discomfort,
(01:11:39):
maybe it's pain, let's just call it discomfort. Okay, wouldn't
be surprising, wouldn't be shocking?
Speaker 3 (01:11:45):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:11:46):
Okay, Well, then it wouldn't be shocking if he was
dealing with that while playing in the first game. Nobody
seems to think that Joe isn't gonna play the first
game if he played in a game that doesn't count.
Why would we think that he's not gonna play in
a game that does count.
Speaker 3 (01:12:04):
The question is will he be dealing with discomfort?
Speaker 2 (01:12:08):
And for how long will he be dealing with discomfort
if he's dealing with it once the season starts, and
if he's dealing with discomfort or he's not quite himself
in that first game, can he play better than he
has while not quite feeling himself in the first game
(01:12:30):
in each of the last two years now, the NFL
gave the Bengals a gift. They play the Patriots Week one.
They're not very good, just traded away their best player,
so that game is now easier. They're gonna be nine
and a half to ten and a half point favorites
in that game. But also the last couple of years,
Joe has not played necessarily well in the second game
(01:12:50):
of the season. The second game of the season this
year is against the Kansas City Chiefs. That is a
huge game, not the end all in be all, but
his regular season week two games go. It's a big one,
and it's one that may carry with it reverberations as
the rest of the season unfolds. And so the question
for me isn't one of well, is he dealing with
(01:13:12):
discomfort or is he not? A lot of folks watching
him practice have arrived at the conclusion, or have at
least wondered out loud.
Speaker 3 (01:13:22):
Is he is he still dealing.
Speaker 2 (01:13:24):
With something or they've you know, gone out and said
he is dealing with something and it's visible, it's obvious. Okay,
if that's the case in twenty days, will it compromise
his effectiveness? Because the last two years, when he hasn't
been quite one hundred percent, that has been welp, something
(01:13:45):
that has compromised his effectiveness or when people have made
excuses for him, that's the reason they cite, right, Well,
he's not quite himself. It's why he played poorly against
the Stealers, why he's not quite himself. It's way he played,
why he played terribly against the Browns. Not the good
news is this different body parts, different injuries. Once the
Bengals got into October last year, Joe Burrow looked great
(01:14:06):
and for like a three or four game stretch was
as good as ever.
Speaker 3 (01:14:10):
That's awesome.
Speaker 2 (01:14:11):
Two years ago, coming off the appendectomy, Joe had a
season that made him an MVP finalist. So there is
a track record of him starting slowly and playing poorly
in part because he's dealing with something physically, and then
you know, rounding in the form and playing quite well.
Unfortunately last year, then he had another injury. But this
(01:14:31):
is a thing until he proves that it's not. And
that's not gonna happen during practice. It's gonna happen once
the game start. Then there are the Reds embarrassed this week.
Get at home. There's no other way to put it.
Twenty eight to three. The game on Saturday night was horrific.
The game yesterday was horrific. Let's be honest. The Kansas
(01:14:53):
City Royals won that game on Friday. They were dramatically
better than the Reds and they stopped so they started
scoring and they blow out Cincinnati. Bobby witt I was
asked on Twitter, is he the best player that's played
at GABP this year? I think the answer is yes.
There is the template for what we all hope Elie
Dela Cruz becomes. Twenty eight to three. It doesn't matter.
(01:15:15):
The Reds, coming into the weekend, despite playing very well
against the Cardinals and sweeping them, despite coming into the
weekend having won four straight games, were a long shot
to make the playoffs. And maybe you thought, you know what,
take that momentum, win two out of three, go on
the road, play a couple of bad teams and go
from there. The chances of this team making the playoffs
has been a long shot for a while. This weekend
(01:15:38):
was about one thing and one thing only, and it
would have been about this one thing had they swept
the Royals twenty eight to three, outscored them. The one
thing is Hunter Green's health. Now, gonna play some audio
for you, Tarn. This is from MLB Network Radio. If
I'm not mistaken, yes, all right, so Nick crawl yesterday.
(01:16:01):
This isn't worse case, Go ahead and play that audio
for me, Tarn.
Speaker 7 (01:16:06):
We had a doctor see him at MRI. You know,
it's not as bad as we thought. He's going to
get checked out again, second opinion, and you know we're
working through that right now. But at this point it's
it's minimal. You're gonna have work. He's gonna miss him
time obviously because it is an injury to his elbow,
and we just want to be precautious on that. But
(01:16:27):
you know, overall is the best case scenario and hopefully
he'll miss a minimal amount of time and be back soon.
Speaker 2 (01:16:34):
Okay, I hope that reflects the ultimate reality. Who doesn't
I do you do? We're all rooting, but well, there's
a couple of different things here. Number one, there is
the understanding of Hunter Green's importance to the team. The
twenty twenty four team in the twenty twenty five team.
All hope for what the Reds are going to be
(01:16:55):
for the rest of this season and what they could
be next year begin with have good young starting pitching.
Now the good young starting pitching. It's not like there
aren't other issues. Nickolodolo has been atrocious since early July.
They still haven't gotten a full season from Andrew Abbott
or Graham Ashcraft or Carson Spires. Rhet Louder has yet
(01:17:17):
to throw a pitch in the big leagues. Julian Agiar
might be a part of the solution. He makes his
big league debut tonight. There are still lots of questions,
but I think even the most pessimistic, jaded observer would
say that the high end the potential of the Red
starters is something to build on and a reason for
(01:17:38):
excitement and a reason to be encouraged. A lot of
that goes up in smoke if Hunter Green is not available.
A lot of that goes up in smoke. If Hunter
Green's career becomes defined by injury, and maybe We're not
there yet, but let's be honest, this is the storyline
that matters. Ever since trade deadline day, attention has pivoted
slowly toward twenty twenty five, all while keeping an eye
(01:18:01):
on twenty twenty four, all while monitoring the standings, all
while still watching the team play. But we're starting to
talk about who's gonna be a part of the team,
what's the team gonna look like, what improvements can they
make for this team to be better, significantly better in
twenty twenty five. Hopes for that being the case get
(01:18:22):
dashed significantly if Hunter Green's not a part of the
team in twenty twenty five. Now you might argue we're
being a little bit premature, and that's okay, But I'll
be honest with you. I always am, and I think
you can relate to this. If you're a Reds fan.
You hear Nick Crawl use verbiage like minimal, precautious, best
(01:18:43):
case and hopefully there's no one not rooting for this.
Hopefully that proves to be the case, and within three weeks,
Hunter Green is back on a big league hill and
continuing his excellent season, maybe making a lash dash to
at least and the Cy Young conversation. But more than
anything proving I'm fine, I'm good, start planning for next year.
(01:19:07):
I'm going to be a big part of it, and
I'm going to be even better. But if you have
paid attention to the messaging when it has come to
injuries this season, how are you at least not a
little skeptical. We've heard before, we don't think it's that
big of a deal. We don't think it's going to
be anything long lasting. And then what happens. Matt McClain
(01:19:28):
doesn't play the entire season. We've heard, Hey, you know
what looks like it's minimal maybe best case for Christian
and Karnassi on strand, and then he is done before
the season even really begins. And that's not to say
that the Reds are going to get it wrong with
Hunter Green, but when it comes to stuff like this,
I'm a Marvin Lewis person. I'm a Marvin Lewis guy.
(01:19:51):
I see better than I hear. When I see Hunter
Green back on a big league mound, I will believe
that he's okay. Until then, I'm in a holding pattern. You,
if you care about the Red should be in a
holding pattern. The Reds themselves are kind of in a
holding pattern. What they'd doing is only going to work
(01:20:12):
if the starting pitching ends up being as good as
so many think it can be. It can't be as
good if Hunter Green's not a part of the mix.
So do I assume he's gonna have Tommy John surgery?
Of course not. Do I worry that that might be
a part of the outcome here? Yeah, how do you not?
Speaker 6 (01:20:30):
Do?
Speaker 3 (01:20:30):
I worry about the accumulation of injuries.
Speaker 2 (01:20:33):
He's had Tommy John surgery once, he had to go
on the injured list last year. Now he's back on
the injured list this season. When is Hunter Green going
to be able to let it fly and make thirty
three starts during a season and maximize his effectiveness and potential.
I don't know. But until it does happen, this team's
ceiling is limited because it's starting pitching ceiling is limited.
(01:20:56):
And by the way, you might say, well, wait a minute, mo,
it's not just about Hunter Green. Fair If the Reds
had a track record of being able to overcome injury,
I would say that, But what did this year prove?
They don't have a track record of overcoming injury. So
I'm gonna assume they can't do it next year. And
by the way, there's been no one on this year's
team who's gotten hurt who's as important as Hunter Green.
(01:21:20):
This was on Saturday, a really tough blow to take,
and it wiped away, It overshadowed entirely everything that happened
on the field. What happened on the field was frustrating, embarrassing.
It might have illustrated how far the Reds are from true,
genuine contention. It didn't matter in comparison to finding out
(01:21:41):
that Hunter Green is back on the injured list and
the very very fair and real worries that this could
be more than just a two week stint on the
il for a player who's dealing with something that's minimal
and not that bad. Time will tell. We are late
twenty minutes after five o'clock. Phone calls are coming up
five point three, seven four nine, fifteen thirty eight six six,
(01:22:04):
seven oh two three seven seven six. We have another
pair of Green Day tickets to give away coming up
in just about fifteen minutes. You know what we're doing today,
right Your shared your knowledge of the shared history between
the Reds and Blue Jays, Reds play the Blue Jays.
Joey Vado is not being called up because he's hitting
a buck fifty in Buffalo. Also, Tony Pike one more
time at Bengals training camp. Your phone calls ahead as well.
(01:22:26):
On ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports station. I've this is
ESPN fifteen thirty. We're giving away Green Day tickets in
like ten minutes now, really quick. Uh, Tony and Austin
gave away Green Day tickets. Austin kind of fly solo
that last hour because Tony's gonna get to a training
camp practice. And you may love the band Green Day,
(01:22:49):
you may dislike the band Green Day. It's fine whatever,
you know, to each their own. But Austin gave away
tickets and played a little game. And the guy who
won his game, uh not only doesn't really like Green Day,
doesn't want to go to the concert. And again, that
is that is that is totally cool. I'm not going
to the Green Day show. Uh, not my jam. But
(01:23:09):
uh if if if you want to go, well then
we'll play a stupid little game here in about five
minutes and awesome, hopefully you win.
Speaker 3 (01:23:18):
If you don't want to go, that's okay.
Speaker 2 (01:23:20):
But uh, you know, why don't you make way for
somebody else who actually.
Speaker 3 (01:23:24):
Wants to to go to the show. Thank you?
Speaker 2 (01:23:28):
Uh, what do we have here? Let's take a phone
caller two. We have not done that today. Five one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty. Jeremy, you're on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:23:36):
Good afternoon, Hey Mo, how you doing. I'm awesome? How
about yourself?
Speaker 8 (01:23:42):
Not too bad? He kind of stole my thunder while
I was on hold there talking about Joe Burrow, and
I wouldn't be uh.
Speaker 1 (01:23:49):
I guess I would be.
Speaker 8 (01:23:50):
More concerned if he wouldn't have played in the Tampa
Bay game and played at somewhat of a decent level
in that game. But I think it's even come out
since the end report this afternoon about him wearing the
glove that him or somebody associated with the Bengals said
it was more of a moisture problem today than there
was any setback with the the wrists or anything like that.
Speaker 6 (01:24:13):
But you know, I think the fact that.
Speaker 8 (01:24:14):
He played in that Tampa Bay game played fairly well,
and you know, I was able to unleash a deep
Bault T Higgins even though they didn't didn't complete it. It
looked like you threw that ball pretty well and it
was a catchable ball. I I I'm just not I'm
not ready to sound the alarm.
Speaker 1 (01:24:30):
It just shit fair.
Speaker 3 (01:24:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:24:32):
Look, the the most public demonstration from Joe Burrow we've
seen he passed with you know, I mean again, was
he was he mid season fourm Razor sharp Joe Burrow
a la versus San Francisco last year?
Speaker 6 (01:24:43):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:24:44):
Did he look like a guy who could be a
productive player and play at a high level during the
regular season in that one small window.
Speaker 3 (01:24:50):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (01:24:51):
And if if that's what you want to walk away
from this this preseason's last training camp with I can't
argue with you at.
Speaker 8 (01:24:59):
All, real quick on the Reds. If you don't mind
thou this thing with Hunter Green, I'm happy to hear
he's at least getting a second opinion because the history
that the Red's medical staff has, I mean it dates
back to hamstring injury with Ken Griffey Junior when they
Reds first first brought him in, and it just seems
(01:25:20):
like it's been one thing after another with the training staff.
And you know, thank the Lord, he decided to you know,
not just take whatever the Red's medical staff is telling
him his gospel and is getting somebody else to at
least look at the MRI I or whatever he's doing.
But as far as options to bring him up, I'm
(01:25:40):
not sure why they're not looking. If Red Louder is
going to be down in Double A getting innings, what's
what's the harm in bringing I mean, the season is
pretty much a lost cause at this point. What's the
harmon letting Rett Louder get these innings in the big
leagues down the stretch if they're going to be pitching
them in Double A anyway?
Speaker 6 (01:25:56):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (01:25:57):
Yeah, Look, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:25:58):
I don't know what what innings number they targeted for
him to have this year. I guess that's not a
hard thing to find out. I know he has gone
past one hundred he pitched in I think it was
like one hundred and twenty five innings for wake Forest
last year.
Speaker 3 (01:26:11):
So I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:26:13):
I don't know how close they are to perhaps shutting
him down. I certainly want to see him. He threw
very well at Dayton. The results not quite as great
as Chattanooga, but it is worth mentioning that the guy
who's going to pitch the night Julian Aggie Are was
their minor league pitcher of the Year last season. He
is a guy who has been ranked in the top
(01:26:33):
among their top ten to fifteen prospects by most scouting services.
I think they view him as a guy who could
be a part of the solution moving forward and someone
who has earned the opportunity to pitch at the big
league level. And that's not to say that they're not
going to call Ret Louder up, but that they're down
on Ret Louder. I think it's I think it's it's
fair to wonder if they just think it's it's Julian
(01:26:56):
Aggie Agguiar's turn, based on what he's done this season,
based on what he's done in the past, and based
on just where they feel about his proximity to the
big leagues.
Speaker 3 (01:27:05):
As opposed to to.
Speaker 8 (01:27:05):
Rent well with Rhet Louder, I would just say he's
the pitchers are on borrow time. Number one, you got
the injury factor, and number two, uh, these top level
prospects with the Reds are on borrow time because they're
you know, they have a difficult time extending. The Hunter
Green being the exception, I just I personally would rather
(01:27:27):
see him getting to work at the innings. You know,
they did it with Mike Leak, and I think that
most people think that Rhet Louder ceilings quite a bit
higher than what Mike Leaks was. I'd just rather see
him getting getting to work in the big league level myself.
Speaker 2 (01:27:40):
Sure, I think we all we all want to see
him up here as quickly as possible. And it is
interesting Rhet Louder because I was, I was looking at
this last night. His his most recent start came and
he threw well, came on the fourteenth, right, So you know,
it's not like he pitched last night, or it's not
like he just threw in a game on sad and
the need you know that the need arises and you
(01:28:03):
know it doesn't it doesn't work within his schedule. It
basically would have. You know, you could have. You could
have slid everything back a day, use the bullpen day
to day and then use him. But yeah, I and
the thing about Julian agi Are is like, it's not
like his numbers this year wowed you. But I don't
get the sense they view him as a guy who's
just gonna fill a spot and move on. I think
they do believe there could be a place in the
(01:28:25):
Big League's forum. But would I rather watch Rhet Louder
right now? Yes, Jeremy, thank you, thanks Moe. The Hunter
Green thing, like, I mean, nothing else matters. It just
and unfortunately, like there is some earned skepticism when so
many of these injuries and this is maybe no one
person's fault, it might be a little bit I don't know.
(01:28:51):
I don't like the word lazy, but it but it
might be a little bit unfair to instantly default to
while the Red's medical staff has no idea what it's doing.
I don't love that. It just it feels like there's
been weirdness while all these injuries this year. It feels
like there have been assurances that things are gonna be okay,
and then they turn out they're not. And you have
that in the back of your head as you're watching
this one hundred green thing play out. Hopefully watching him
(01:29:15):
play out means nothing more than he misses a couple
of starts and he's back and awesome. But until that happens,
how are you at least not a little bit concerned.
I'm a lot concerned. The Burrow thing, I wrestle with
because I trust people like Tony, I also trust my eyes.
What I saw from Joe Burrow in the first preseason
game was pretty damn good. But it's fair to wonder
(01:29:39):
if he's at all physically compromised or not quite himself
can he play effectively enough to help the Bengals avoid
an zero to two start for the second straight year.
When it goes see Green Day, let's just take one
contestant five point three seven four nine, fifteen thirty. We
have a pair to give away every single day five
(01:30:01):
win three seven four nine fifteen thirty, and if our
contestant doesn't win, well, we'll give away two pair tomorrow.
Green Day is coming to a gabp on Thursday, along
with Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and the Linda Lindez. You can
go on our dime if you want to answer some
questions about the Reds and Blue Jays and their shared
history together. Next on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station,
(01:30:25):
home of lifetime power train protection and Guaranteed Credit Approval,
Go to kelseychev dot com. We're giving away Green Day tickets.
In just a second, I hit the post there. First,
we start with the sports Update the Bengals practice today.
Jamar Chase did not, Sam Hubbard did, Trent Brown did,
(01:30:46):
Joe Burrow did. Some said he didn't look very good.
Some say he didn't look very good, and now there's
fighting about it on the internet. Bengals will practice with
the Colts tomorrow. They play the Colts on Thursday night.
That game's on ESPN fifteen thirty. Pregame coverage begins at three.
I gotta be honest with you. I'm I'm I'm kind
of over training camp in the preseason. Can can we
(01:31:07):
just we just yeah? Bengals did make it official. Unfortunately,
Chris Evans and Deontay Smith their seasons over. Both on
I are both with knee injuries. Team also waving Davanta Maxwell,
a defensive tackle Reds and Blue Jays tonight. No, the
Blue Jays have not called up Joey Vado. Joey Vado
(01:31:28):
with Buffalo was six for thirty nine, which isn't good
twenty strikeouts.
Speaker 3 (01:31:35):
I love Joe Evado. I'm one of his biggest fans.
Speaker 2 (01:31:39):
The Reds got it right when it came to Joe Evado,
and they have the rest of his life to bring
him back and honor him in any number of ways,
and I hope they do, and I'm sure they will.
The one thing the Reds are good at is honoring
old players. Starting lineup tonight hopefully made well thanks to
Madewell restoration. Red's trying to trying to end a three
game losing streak. India elied Tyler's Steven send friedel Steer
(01:32:01):
in Candelario who is dhing France at first Frehlian right,
Santiago Espina, the former Blue Jay, is playing third base.
Speaker 3 (01:32:09):
What else do we have?
Speaker 2 (01:32:11):
I think that's oh, the the Cincinnati Open. The men's
final is tonight's Arina Sablenka beats Jessica Pagoula in the
women's final three and five, and tonight's the men's final.
I watched the Sinner Zverev match last night, which I'm
(01:32:32):
not sure it. Had Alexander's Zverev made the final, I'm
not sure he'd have been able to go today. Center
outlasted him last night, and now we'll take on the
American Francis Tiafo tonight, not before six o'clock Center Court
up there in Mason. It's weird having the final out
of Monday, all right, It's time to give away some
Green Day tickets we have with this, Dave, Dave, Dave,
(01:32:55):
you actually want to go to the show on Thursday?
Speaker 3 (01:32:57):
Right?
Speaker 7 (01:32:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:32:58):
I heard it earlier on Guy Wedge's tickets. Had no
interest in going to the concert?
Speaker 1 (01:33:05):
That was funny.
Speaker 2 (01:33:06):
All right, Well, here we go. Hey, we're gonna have
you go unopposed. All right, so we're gonna ask you
five questions related to the shared history between the Reds
and Blue Jays. I think these are easy. If you
get three out of five, you're gonna go to the concert.
If you don't, well, then we're gonna give away two
pair tomorrow. Are you ready.
Speaker 1 (01:33:25):
I'm ready?
Speaker 3 (01:33:26):
Ah, very good. Here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:33:28):
Question number one, stand by This man pitched in nineteen
ninety two in the World Series for the Toronto Blue
Jays and in nineteen ninety five in the National League
Championship Series for the Reds. So ninety two Blue Jays
in the postseason, ninety five Reds in the postseason.
Speaker 3 (01:33:47):
Who was it?
Speaker 2 (01:33:47):
Was it? A Wan Guzman, B. Pete Scherick or C.
David Wells?
Speaker 1 (01:33:53):
I'd say David well Is it?
Speaker 3 (01:33:54):
David Wells? Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:33:56):
Pitched in relief for the Blue Jays in the nineteen
ninety two World Series, pitched and started I think Game
three for the Reds in the nineteen ninety five and LCNS.
All right, one for one, gotta get two more. This
one time Cincinnati Reds player was the second ever manager
of the Toronto Blue Jays said A Jimmy Williams, B
Bobby Maddock or ccdo Gaston?
Speaker 6 (01:34:21):
A man, I'm gonna say B Bobby Maddock.
Speaker 2 (01:34:23):
Can I get B Bobby Maddock? C correct played for
the Reds in nineteen forty one, in nineteen forty two,
and then managed the Blue Jays in nineteen eighty and
nineteen eighty one, and as a member of the Canadian
Did I what now?
Speaker 1 (01:34:38):
You said? C?
Speaker 3 (01:34:40):
Your It was B? He said, B Bobby Maddock?
Speaker 2 (01:34:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:34:42):
What did I say? See?
Speaker 1 (01:34:43):
After A?
Speaker 2 (01:34:46):
You know, I confuse myself sometimes very good. It's two
for two, he's gotta get one more. And just think
it's only Monday, all right? In the Reds first ever
game in Toronto on June twenty, two thousand and eight,
eleven years after interleague play started, the Reds finally played
a game in Toronto June twenty fourth, two thousand and eight.
(01:35:07):
This Future read homered and drove in four runs in
a fourteen to one Jay's win. Was it a Richarilia
be Scott rolland or c Lyle Overbay.
Speaker 3 (01:35:18):
Bet Rolls Scott rolling Darren?
Speaker 1 (01:35:21):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (01:35:21):
Three for three. Could not have made it easier. Dave, Congratulations,
You're gonna go see Green Days. A lot of people.
Dave's got like his whole neighborhood out cheer and for him,
Dave's gonna go see Green Day and Smashing Pumpkins and
Rancid and the Linda Lindez And if you want to
go to that show, go to MLB dot com, go
to Reds dot com, go to whatever your favorite ticket bro,
Just go go to the show or win tickets Tomorrow.
(01:35:42):
I don't know how we're gonna maybe some Bengals Colts
shared history, of which there's a lot that'll probably be tomorrow,
and then we'll have another pair on Wednesday, and then
the Green Day portion of the radio show is over.
Tony Pike joins us next on ESPN fifteen thirty. Hey,
it's Mowger with my guy John.
Speaker 13 (01:36:00):
Getting ESPN fifteen to thirty from iHeartRadio.
Speaker 1 (01:36:05):
This is a training camp report proved to you by
Skylight Chili feeling good. It's Skylight at ESPN fifteen thirty,
the official home of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (01:36:16):
Yes, all right, one more checking with Tony Pike. Bengals
wrapping up a practice today. They will have a joint
workout with the Colts tomorrow afternoon, of course, playing the
Colts on Thursday evening live on ESPN fifteen thirty. What
was the headline today from today's Bengals practice.
Speaker 6 (01:36:32):
The biggest headline was the defense one again, so much
so it had the offense running gassers at the end
of practice. For me, if I'm keeping track, going back
to last Monday, the defense has won every practice Monday Tuesday.
It sounds like the Bears won Thursday. And I thought
the Bengals defense won again today, And you could take
that multiple ways. One, that's a good thing because the
(01:36:52):
defense last year for the Bengals wasn't good enough by
any account. Two, the offense did it without t Higgins,
who did do any team stuff today, No Jamar Chase.
But I thought the combination of Joe Burrow using the
glove today, which apparently has helped with it's a moisture
thing when the weather is like it is today, which
I've never seen that or heard of that much before
(01:37:13):
from playing quarterback. But the glove and just the clenching
a lot of the risk today from Joe Burrow. He
didn't push the ball down the field outside of one
attempt all practice. The offense didn't move the ball much
at all. He pretty much exclusively hit checkdowns. I thought
it was another very good day for the defense and
another day for the offense where you just leave and say, okay,
there's not many more of these opportunities left. This offense
(01:37:36):
had some strides to make for an offense that was
very open going in. Joe Burrow was open, Zach Taylor
was open. The way they started the last couple of
years is not good enough. This training camp was supposed
to help alleviate that, but there are still questions out there.
Speaker 2 (01:37:51):
You have been at the overwhelming majority of these practices.
How many practices has Joe looked like he did today?
Speaker 6 (01:38:00):
I would say Tuesday for sure, of last week, the
tail end of Monday. But outside of that, he's not
been constantly messing with the hand like he was today.
That today was it was noticeable, and you gotta think
I'm sure Joe is cognizant that there are people watching
his every move at practice, so this is probably him
(01:38:22):
trying not to draw attention to it, and there was
still that much attention to it today. Everyone was kind
of picking up on on the sidelines. I had not
seen as much of that throughout camp. I thought the
way he started camp was on fire, and I thought
since then it's cooled a bit, and leading up to
the last week where by anyone's standards, especially if you're
(01:38:44):
sure gonna ask Joe Burrow, it's not been good enough
from the offensive standpoint.
Speaker 2 (01:38:47):
All right, Tony, thank you so much Tony Beck for
since he three to sixty tomorrow at noon and then
live reports from the Bengals Colts joined practice three forty five,
four forty five and five forty five. Two pole questions
just posted, both both injury related or both concern related.
One Hunter Green, one Joe Burrow. Vote now at Moegar
thanks to the greatest insurance company in the history of

Hi ns dot com.
Speaker 2 (01:39:27):
I'm looking for your level of concern regarding both Hunter
Green and Joe Burrow. Tomorrow on the show, Paul Danner
Junior's got to cover that practice, so he is going
to join us on Wednesday. Scott Saderfield among our guests
tomorrow live training camp, reports, latest on the Bengals Pike,
Live at practice, and we'll talk Red's Jays as well.
We are done. Show is over. Thank you for listening.
(01:39:50):
My apologies to anybody we didn't get a chance to
get to on hold.
Speaker 3 (01:39:53):
We'll do it tomorrow. Thanks to Term for producing. Have

Speaker 2 (01:39:56):
More Green Day tickets to give away as well on
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati sports station, The
