Speaker 1 (00:00):
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Here we go Tuesday afternoon in the Queen City. We
got a lot to get to. It's the Moegar Show.
I am, I'm not Molegar. Still thank you for choosing me.
(00:41):
Busy Busy Tuesday on the show. Bengals preseason game number
two in the books, Red start the always dangerous for
usually the wrong reasons, West Coast Swing with a win,
(01:03):
a positive sign there for the home ball club, and
those two topics, for the most part, will carry us
through the day. I do think there's something we're gonna
have to get to here in a little bit, but
(01:23):
we'll get to that in a little bit. So let's
start with the Bengals as they get their first preseason
win since twenty twenty two, a thirty one seventeen victory
over the Washington Commanders. Joe Burrow got in a quarter.
(01:49):
Most of the other starters at one drive left Burrow
out there for a couple extra drives. He finishes nine
to fourteen, sixty two yards and a touchdown. So that's
six drives for Joe Burrow in the preseason, five touchdowns.
Pretty good, Pretty good for Joe Burrow. Although Joe it's
(02:16):
preseason throw it away. He had the entirety of the
Cincinnati Bengals fan base and most of the NFL watching
with baited breath as he tried to escape sacks on
multiple occasions. One. I know he was reversing field. I know,
(02:42):
offensive linemen are taught to get those hands up when
a quarterback is reversing field so they don't get a
penalty for a blind side block. But I mean, there
were three offensive linemen, three defensive linemen in Joe's vicinity,
and it ended with three defensive linemen converging at the quarterback.
(03:02):
There was also a pretty nasty horse collar tackle that
fortunately did not result in anything serious. But look, as
Ted Carris said last week, that's our hopes and dreams.
(03:23):
So a not a banner showing for the Bengals offensive line.
And on the other side of the ball, my goodness,
it was. It was ugly early. It was ugly early.
The Bengals had nine of eleven starters on the field.
Washington went down the field twice and scored in a
(03:46):
grand total of seven plays. They averaged seventeen point seven
yards per rush, and Jayden Daniels did not throw a pass.
You were right Terran Jaden Daniels did not throw a pass,
and the Commanders still marched down the field scored twice,
one in three plays, one in four plays, and that's
(04:13):
until proven otherwise. It is very hard to predict the
kind of success that you should be able to predict
with Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, and t Higgins on your
roster because the defense has been atrocious when the guys
(04:39):
that are going to play the most have been on
the field so far in the preseason one against the
Eagles second string ten days ago, and two against a
Commander's offense that didn't even bother trying to throw the
football and uh miss me with the It's just the preseason.
(05:06):
Don't panic crowd, because this is a defense that was
not upgraded by any large measure in the off season.
It is a defense that is without its best player
and they are now fielding trade requests two weeks from
(05:31):
the start of the season for Trey Hendrickson. It is
a defense that has done nothing to calm the fears
that they are going to limit and cap Joe Burrow's success.
(05:55):
It's just the reality, and it's unavoidable. Zach Taylor says
in the post game. He's not worried about it. They've
been fine in practice, Okay, Zach, Sure, we're just supposed
(06:16):
to take your word for it when there's nothing to
go on. That indicates that this unit has made a
drastic turnaround from a bad defense in each of the
past two seasons, at times historically bad defense in each
of the past two seasons. I didn't need them to
(06:43):
come out in these first two preseason games. Remember, the
point of playing as many starters as they have in
the first two preseason games was to be ready to
get off to a fast start. And between the Eagles
second team offense and the Commander's first team offense, it
(07:07):
wouldn't have looked much different if Cincinnati put no defenders
on the field, because those two offenses did whatever they
wanted straight up and down the field. And I don't
know how you watch it and you're not concerned. I
(07:31):
don't know how you watch it and go everything's gonna
be fine. There's nothing to see here. This is the
meme of the Creatures sitting in the chair with the
entire kitchen on fire, sipping his coffee and saying, this
is fine. I didn't need to see a lot I
(07:51):
needed to see something in these two games from what
is expected to be the the large majority of the
starting unit. Oh, well, they'll be better when BJ Hill
gets there. Is BJ Hill, Lawrence Taylor? Because if he's not,
(08:18):
is BJ Hill? Reggie White? Because if he's not, BJ
Hill's a good football player, He's not coming back and
making that much of a difference. I'm sure Cam Taylor
Britt is going to be able to help. But guess what.
Commanders didn't even need to pass cornerback one ain't much
(08:41):
of an issue if the other team is rushing for
over seventeen and a half yards per carry, Tarren, I
can't do that on freshman in college football twenty five,
twenty six. Whatever the heck it is seventeen and a
(09:01):
half yards per carrying those first two drives. And again
the concern for me, nobody in the picture. We talked
about it when I filled in the day after the
Eagles game. Eagles had guys just running wide open. Last night,
(09:25):
Commanders had guys running down the field. Nobody in the vicinity,
nobody in the picture fifteen twenty twenty five, thirty yards
down the field. If that doesn't make you concerned, I
don't know what does, and it's gonna leave a pretty
(09:49):
important question to answer. I think we have aired on
the side of optimism with al Golden. I'll get them
a little better. What if Al Golden's not better than
Lou ana Arumo? What if Al Golden's worse than lou
(10:13):
ana Arumo, because I, in general, I don't think the
problem is the coordinator. I think the problem is they
don't have a lot of talent on defense. They're not fast,
they don't fly to the football, they're not overly big
and strong. I don't know what the identity of the
(10:34):
defense is. And one of the things that saved Lou
was he could scheme it up. What if Al Golden
doesn't scheme it up as good as Lou, and now
you've got bad players in a lesser system. That's concerning.
(10:55):
It's concerning. So we'll discuss that today and we will
get to quite a bit of Reds talk as well.
Red's get a four to one victory over the Anaheim
Angels last night. The big blow Gavin lux first inning.
TJ Friedel gets on Gavin lucks two run home run,
(11:18):
two to nothing two batters into the game. The Reds
never give up the lead. They add a run in
the fifth, They add a run in the eighth, get
a four to one victory out West Matt McClain with
the sacrifice fly after Cabrian Hayes hits a triple to
(11:40):
add that last run. And you also had Austin Hayes
with two for four day with an RBI. Good pitching
performance from Brady Singer six inning, six hit, one run,
only one walk, four strikeouts. And then they're kind of
(12:01):
piecemeal in this bullpen together right now, trying as hard
as they can to find some days off for Santition
and Pegan. At the back end of that bullpen, Phillips,
May and Barlow go three innings last night. Barlow goes
one and a third to get the final four outs,
(12:25):
and he gets all four on strikeouts. Did give up
a walk, but a good outing from Barlow to preserve
things and get the Reds in the win column. They
are now sixty six and sixty. They are one game
back in the Wild Card. Let's take a break more
(12:49):
after this. Let's get this ball rolling, Let's get this
show on the road. It's the Moeger Show, hosted by
not Moegar. Right here in Cincinnati is ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Thirty Cincinnati, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
Traffic on eastbound two seventy five after Montgomery rode the
right lane blocked off from an accident on Liberty Street.
Another accident at race report of a pedestrianstruck. There use
extra caution on that exelic with traffic.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
This report is sponsor.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
The World, the World?
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Tarn is this on purpose?
Speaker 5 (13:37):
Like?
Speaker 2 (13:37):
Are you sure? This is this a description of the
Bengals defense?
Speaker 6 (13:42):
It could be the world?
Speaker 2 (13:46):
I mean this this team looks like exactly like last year,
I guess, but Advan McPherson has looked better. But other
than that, the offensive line is bad, the defense stinks,
and Joe Burrow is gonna have to do everything all
around the world the same song. My goodness, Like that's
(14:14):
all we've learned so far from the preseason. Joe Burrow
is really good, the offense is elite in spite of
a bad offensive line, and the defense stinks. Thank you
to Digital Underground and TUPAC for making the uh explanation
(14:39):
very simple. Mike in l A, Mike, how the heck
are you?
Speaker 7 (14:45):
Sare I gotta call back situation?
Speaker 2 (14:48):
I'm sorry that's okay, We're gonna have We're gonna put
Mike on hold. Sound like what was going on there.
I hope he's okay. Correct. I don't know what that was,
but I hope he's okay. We do have some FC
Cincinnati news Cincinnati. According to Tom Bogert and confirmed by
(15:17):
Laura Fayler, FC Cincinnati signing Miles Robinson to a new
deal guaranteed through twenty twenty seven, with an option for
twenty twenty eight. Chris Albright has said as recently as
July that they were doing everything possible to keep him.
Looks like that got done. Taryn, I, I didn't know
if I was going to do this as a topic
(15:38):
or not, but it's interesting. I'm interested to hear from
the FC CROB because I got a lot of responses
on Twitter when the news came out that the Bengals
were looking once again exploring a trade for Trey Hendrickson.
Which if you were going to trade Trey Hendrickson, did
(15:59):
you should have been done months and months and months ago,
so that you had the copspace to work with, You
had the maneuverability, maybe even got a high pick, and
this past draft that you could have used to make
this team better. Maybe you could have got a player
or two that you could have used to make this
team better. And I said something along the lines of,
(16:23):
it's unfortunate for the fans in this city, the fans
of these two teams on the River, that they have
ownership groups that are I do think I will say this,
I do think the Bengals towards the end of the
Marvin Lewis era and the Reds after they blew up
(16:46):
that group Bruce and you know, Boto was still on
the team. But like that that group Arroyo and Leak
and Lato's for a little while and Quato and Volcaz
and Frasier and man, they had a lot, a lot
of dudes at Cozart, a lot of dudes that could
(17:07):
play on those teams when they bottomed out and they
were getting you know, five thousand and six thousand people
a night at the ballpark. And then the Bengals at
the end of the Marvin Lewis era leading into the
tank that resulted in drafting Joe Burrow. I think they
(17:31):
learned bad doesn't work in this town. Bad. They will
turn on you. They will not buy tickets, they will
they will force your hand. But good good works in
this town. Because good what does Moe always say? Be
(17:53):
good or be interesting? Correct? When you're hovering like the Reds,
they've been between like three in six games over five hundred,
it feels like for what like six weeks now, Tarn,
they haven't made any significant progress up the food chain.
They haven't fallen back any They've just kind of hovered
(18:16):
and the Bengals sniffed greatness. But the past two years
they've fallen back nine to eight, just outside the playoffs.
But interesting to the end, the way that the Bengals
handle contracts on everybody not named Burrow. Yes, they finally
got Jamar and t taken care of, but that's if
(18:38):
you think that's for any other reason than Joe Burrow
held them hostage and said, do you want me actively
engaged or do you want me to start thinking about
what's next? And they got Chase and Higgins done. But
(19:00):
everything else has pointed to both of these franchises being
okay with being good, just good. It's fine. Good people
are gonna come. We're gonna be in the playoff race.
We're gonna be in the playoff hunt. We're gonna we're
gonna be in the picture. But after watching last night, yeah,
(19:22):
it was a win, it's a preseason game. I don't care.
After watching that first quarter last night, is anybody booking
their tickets to the super Bowl after watching what that
O line and defense look like? No, I want to
get more excited about this Reds team. But what happens.
They win, they go three and one, they go one
and three, they go three and one, they go one
(19:43):
and three, like that's been the yo yo for weeks now.
S C Cincinnati, on the other hand, and I'm not
a big FC Cincinnati guy, I haven't hid that fact.
But they're investing. They lose an MVP, they go out
(20:05):
and they get another MVP candidate, Like they're taking the
support and they're trying to go for it. They're trying
to win a championship. Now, maybe that looks different in
MLS than it does in the NFL than it does
in Major League Baseball. But of the three professional sports
organizations in town, a lot of the people in my
(20:28):
mentions are right, there's only one that feels like winning
is actually important, is actually something that matters to them.
The other two being good is good enough. Why be great.
When you can be good, you can make more money.
They think they think you can make more money being
(20:49):
good than spending what it costs to be great. I
disagree wholeheartedly with that statement. But here we are just
take a break after this Sincinti's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
Thirty, Sincy.
Speaker 8 (21:05):
One of the things that I traditionally do at the
bad of every year is get around to meet with
each program.
Speaker 9 (21:10):
So that'll happen over the next.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
Couple of weeks and bustin elmore.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
I think you should continue to let me keep going there.
Speaker 1 (21:16):
Sincy three sixty tomorrow, which twelve noons on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 10 (21:26):
Traffic from the UC Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
Nearly sixty percent of Americans waiting on an organ transplant
are from multicultural communities. Give the Gift of Life to
become an organ donor or explore living donation at UCHealth
dot com slash transplant. It is now two right lanes
blocked off from an accident on eastbound twenty seventy five
after Montgomery Road traffic stop and go back from Lobanon Road.
(21:52):
Thirty five minute to lay at the moment and got
an accident involving a pedestrian Liberty Street at race. I'm
at ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
Do you remember for time you heard the legend into
the career, end up with the Killers. Nothing, we've been
problem right along since that. He's ESPN fifteen thirty. Tony
Pike coming up here. Ten minutes or so. Let's check
back on the phones, Ron and Milford. Ron wants to
talk some Bengals. Ron, how's it going, Chad?
Speaker 1 (22:24):
Chad?
Speaker 5 (22:25):
How could anyone watch that and think that the Bengals
have any defense? And yet the players I know you
probably saw t Y Slayton saying, oh.
Speaker 11 (22:33):
Man, we're gonna be good.
Speaker 5 (22:34):
Come we're gonna be good. Don't worry come regular season.
What do we have to believe that?
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Nothing? That that's exactly we've been good in practice. Practice. Man,
We're talking about practice, not a game, not a game practice, Chad.
Speaker 5 (22:52):
I mean, good lord. If there are two guys that
should have been cut immediately after the game last night,
I don't know if he's injured or not up, but
he's got to be cut. Is Lucas Patrick and Jordan Battle.
We know Jordan Battle's not hurt, but he he lets
guys get open and he can't tackle anybody.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Yeah, I mean we keep hearing like Jordan Battle is
going to be the sleeper, the surprise guy. He hasn't
done anything yet. And Lucas Patrick, we knew that story
when they signed him. We knew how that story was
gonna end. Like he's not good enough.
Speaker 5 (23:26):
How much guaranteed money we paid him.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
But hopefully it's not very much.
Speaker 5 (23:29):
We can be done with him and get Riisner signed.
We need to get him signed. And ye, Chad, I
don't know if you got any in what's the inside?
I mean, Hendrickson sounds like he's, you know, trying not
to burn any bridges. He wants to apparently be here.
Can we not fork up a little bit more guaranteed money?
Speaker 2 (23:47):
I mean, that's and that what he said last night.
I was doing a podcast, so I didn't hear the interview,
but when he interviewed with ESPN, he said, we've agreed
on the dollars, we've agreed on the years, but we're
not like we're not there on the guarantee. Just give
the damn man what he wants.
Speaker 5 (24:06):
I know, Chad, I mean, at this point, I feel
like we got to get him here. I mean, this
defense is awful, but I have friends that say, yeah,
but he's not going to make it any better.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
But I mean, look, he's not going to help in
the run. That's not what he does. But they can't
get to the quarterback at all without him. So at
least give yourself a guy that averages a sack of game. Like,
at least give yourself a guy the offense has to go.
We gotta keep an eye on this guy over here,
because right now, who on this Bengals defense? If you're
(24:39):
an offensive coordinator, legit question, I'm begging somebody to give
me an answer here. If you're an offensive coordinator and
you're game planning Cincinnati, who on this defense are you
scared of?
Speaker 5 (24:51):
That's a chad, That's the thing. You just laugh looking
out there. If you're basically, if you're an offensive coordinator,
because you know that the secondary is weak, I mean
you're depending on linebackers to make tackles, and I mean,
good lord, last year with Logan Wilson and Jermaine Pratt,
they had tackles only because no one else was making tackles.
I feel like the defensive lineman, like you said, I
(25:13):
mean Myles Murphy. I feel like he's in danger of
not making the team and he was a first round
draft pick. And the tackles. I mean, I don't know
what Tys Layton's smoking that he thinks that, hey, you
know what, we're gonna be good come regular season. I
would settle for average. You get the Bengals at the
eighteenth rated deep and they're going back to the Super
(25:35):
Bowl again.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Yeah, we've all said that, But the problem is, it
feels like they are so far from eighteenth. Like eighteenth
feels like a miracle.
Speaker 5 (25:45):
I mean, Chad, what are they to do to fix this?
Speaker 2 (25:50):
Well, the problem is they they tried to fix it.
They tried to fix a gunshot wound with the band aid.
They didn't go get Bill Parcells to coach the defense.
They got Al Golden, Al Golden. I mean, I don't
dislike Al Golden. I think Al Golden's a good coach.
But what evidence do we have that Al Golden's a
(26:11):
better coach than lou Anrima None.
Speaker 5 (26:14):
I mean I would have I mean, here's the problem.
I loved lou I thought they should have kept lou
because here's the problem. They had a lot of guys
hurt and they had a lot of bad players. Now
you know what, they still have a lot of bad players.
But I mean that's not Lou's fault. I mean he
I felt like I mean, let's think about it. He
(26:34):
had the Chiefs always their number, The Chiefs would score
a little bit, but then once Lou got the game
plan going, the Chiefs were locked down.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Yeah, Lou wasn't a bad coordinator. I think I think
what happened with Lou is he needs a veteran defense
to do what he wants to do schematically, and when
they went young, that's LOSE system is advanced, like it's
(27:05):
it's something that requires guys that have been around in
the league and have been you know, through it, and
when you go young, I don't think those players were
ready to be in a defense like Lose. So I
do think like the move to Al Golden, the guy
that's worked with college guys, that's worked with younger guys
(27:26):
like in theory. Sure, but what empirical evidence do I
have to believe that this defense is going to improve
when I'm not sure they got better at coordinator and
they didn't get better any at any of the position groups.
They didn't get better at any of the position groups.
Speaker 12 (27:46):
No.
Speaker 13 (27:47):
I mean, Chad, this secondary is awful, and you can't
count on the fact that there's gonna be any pressure
to help them. Like you said, I mean, they have
nobody to get to the quarterback unless they sign Hendrickson.
Speaker 5 (28:00):
Now, I will say that I went back and took
a look at the stats. He had nine games last
year with zero stats. So, I mean, to some of
my friends point they say, you know, he's not as
dominant as t J. Watt or Miles Garrett or you know,
Michael Parsons, which might be true, but you know.
Speaker 4 (28:21):
Without him, we have zero.
Speaker 14 (28:26):
We're open for.
Speaker 5 (28:27):
Joseph o'side and maybe do something and you know, maybe
Shamar Stewart, which, let's face it, I mean, I'm not
seeing those guys do anything, and we know we can't
get God. I love dj Hill, I think we all do,
but he's not going to generate a pass rush. I mean,
there is nothing here on defense like you said, there's nothing.
(28:47):
I mean, if I'm an offensive corn, I've.
Speaker 8 (28:50):
Been sitting back there and go, man, we're.
Speaker 5 (28:52):
Gonna This reminds me. Do you remember when Marvin had
to take over the defense from when he fired Trel
Austin because he was scoring like twenty five points a week.
That's what's gonna happen this year. I mean, I don't
see any evidence that cheers are not going to have
any problem marching right down the field.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Before I let you go, I got a true or
four falls for you round. Will the Bengals score forty
points in a game this year and lose?
Speaker 5 (29:19):
I say yes, I say true? What do you say?
Speaker 2 (29:23):
Probably true? Like I could eat I could see a
forty two forty one, you know, for five forty two
even yeah, forty five for anything. I could see a
loss in the forties, which would be the most I
mean predictable.
Speaker 5 (29:41):
And that's like I played defense on PlayStation. The only
problem is I'm scoring in the fifties.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (29:48):
It's not realistic for Jonah. I mean remember when he
said last year he has to play a perfect game.
That's like the when the Reds are having no offense
in Andrew Ravin or gotta throw a one hundred green
no that they can't give up a run, that they
give up run and they're gonna lose. That's how Joe
Burrow is God loving back. They're thinking every path has
to be perfect, every player have to make has to
(30:09):
be perfect. Well that's not plausible.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
No, all right, man, thank you. I appreciate the call.
Speaker 5 (30:17):
Thank you, Chad, you take care of my friend.
Speaker 2 (30:18):
Appreciate it. All right, Let's take a break, take it
and uh, we'll get to Tony when we get back
to get his thoughts on last night. More after this,
it's the Mowagger Show. Since that He's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (30:34):
Thirty Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 10 (30:39):

Speaker 15 (31:12):
The USPN fifteen thirty with the latest from Bengals training camp.
Brought you boy Cambra Credit Union on your official home
of the Cincinnati Bengals ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
Welcome out to Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. Chad Brendel filling
in for Moagar on The Moagar Show Today. Time for
a training camp report with Tony Pike. But first breaking
news out of the University of Cincinnati. According to a
statement from Cincinnati men's head basketball coach Wes Miller, Gisel
(31:57):
James has been dealing with personal issues throughout the summer.
We removed him from the team last month. He is
currently not a member of our basketball program. As this
is a personal matter. I will have no further comment
at this time that coming from West Miller. So the
Gisel James era at Cincinnati has come to an end.
(32:21):
There you go for everybody wondering what's going on. Now
you know your your immediate reaction.
Speaker 8 (32:28):
Tony Pike sad because it felt like at times there
was so much promise with Gizsel and what he was
able to do and if he could take the next step,
and how the roster was being built. You hate losing
a guy like that because you knew it his best,
how much he can help the team. But you know,
unfortunately at a time like this, you have to move on.
(32:50):
You have to kind of figure out and reassess where
you're at, and hopefully you have built enough depth on
the roster that you still feel good about where you're at.
Speaker 6 (32:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
I mean, it's uh, as someone said to me last night,
you know, because I've been on the phone way more
than a forty seven year old man should be on
the phone talking about another man's Instagram account. He's sick.
He's sick, and he needs help.
Speaker 8 (33:18):
And that's obviously the most important now is as you've
probably exhausted every opera option, you have to get that help.
And you know now it needs to go to another level,
which which is him not at the university.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
Yeah, Tony, let's get to last night as the Bengals
get their first preseason win since twenty twenty two. But
it wasn't without some anxiety, I guess is a good
word for it. We have been talking about the offensive line,
we have been talking about the defense. It feels like
(33:53):
since the day Joe Burrow got drafted. I did not
walk away from last night feeling any better about either
of those two situations.
Speaker 4 (34:01):
No.
Speaker 8 (34:02):
I mean, they have some awesome weapons of receiver and
they have awesome in my opinion running back room, But
the question about this team will remain. Can they block
for Joe Burrow. It's to me not a great sign
when the best blocking lineman right now is the third
round rookie out of Georgia. Now, that's a good, good
spot for Dylan Fairchild and good for the draft. But
(34:24):
if he's right now your most solid offensive lineman, what
does that mean around the rest of the offensive line.
They're obviously going to try to address it with Dalton
Roisner with the Minnesota Vikings. I know he's in town today,
but this is not good enough. I cannot tell you
how confused I was when Jamar Chase and t Higgins
and Chase Brown left the game to see Joe Burrow
(34:45):
out there for another series, and then he gets hit
on that series, and then he goes out there for
another one after that. I don't know how that's possible, because,
as Ted Carriss put it last week, that's our hopes
and dreams with Joe Burrow. It's a gamble, and it
wasn't gamble to keep him out there last night. I
do not expect to obviously see Joe Burrow until they
go to Cleveland now going forward, but there's a lot
(35:06):
of work to be done up front between now and then.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
What will be the status of this fan base if
Reisner gets out of here without becoming a Bengal.
Speaker 14 (35:18):
Confusion.
Speaker 8 (35:19):
I mean, I don't know other way to put it.
He is the most solid option from a pass blocking
guard that's available at Joe Goodberry on the show today
and Joe Goodbarry said that's who he circled at the
beginning of the offseason. So to have him still there available, Yes,
there's probably reasons he's still out there, but what he
excels at is the ability to pass block for the quarterback.
(35:40):
That's what the Bengals need desperately. I don't know how
you can let him leave town without a deal.
Speaker 2 (35:46):
Let's look at the defense. I was doing a podcast
on Bearcat Journal last night as the game started, and
Tony felt like every time I turned my head from
the computer screen to the TV screen, Washington was ripping
off a twenty plus yard run. Given what we've seen
(36:09):
in these first two games, I don't know how anyone
can feel anything but a sense of major concern with
this defense.
Speaker 8 (36:21):
Yeah, at this point, I don't know where you turn,
they are a defense comprised of players that just don't
seem like they're good enough at the NFL level right now.
It felt like they thought their personnel was better and
that there was the defensive coordinator that needed to make
a change. They did that, and by all accounts, it's
been base defense, which is fine, and okay, they're running
(36:42):
base they're not, you know, showing many looks. That's fine,
but if you're running base defense, you shouldn't have complete
breakdowns on gap responsibilities. You could, you shouldn't have gaping
holes if you're gonna get beat or or there's a
situation where you lose a one on one, so be it.
They're just out of position, they look at steps, they don't.
Speaker 14 (37:01):
Look as aggressive.
Speaker 8 (37:02):
It just it doesn't feel like things are meshing right
now with Al Golden and the personnel. And again, where
do you go to change that. There's not many options,
there's not much room, there's not many players available. It's
going to be very interesting to see if anything can
change between now and the start of the season for
that side of the ball.
Speaker 2 (37:23):
Yeah, I just don't know where. I don't know where
you turn for optimism, Zach saying, now We're good in practice,
you know, I said to that Tony, practice practice. We're
talking about practice, man, not a game.
Speaker 8 (37:40):
It contradicts, It contradicts everything you've said based on why
it's important to play in the preseason games.
Speaker 14 (37:46):
If not, then the starters wouldn't be.
Speaker 8 (37:48):
Playing in the preseason games. I can control practice. I
can play a script. I can do first down, second down,
third down. You get in the game and you've got
to react, You've got to go play fast, and this
team is struggling in those situations. I don't know again,
where the confidence grows from between now and heading to Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
What if you could say this is my biggest problem.
I think as as we sit after two preseason games,
if you could say something was a strength of this defense,
could you find one? What would you say it wasn't.
Speaker 8 (38:22):
I don't have one right now because they registered no
sacks last night. They got beat up inside. The linebackers
looked out of position and slow. Maybe you can say corner.
Maybe maybe you can get by with corner. You don't
have genostone out there. Outside of that. I don't know
where you say this defense strengths lie.
Speaker 14 (38:43):
Maybe you try to just shrink the field.
Speaker 8 (38:45):
Maybe you try to get teams into the red zone
and then.
Speaker 14 (38:48):
Get stuffed there. But outside of that, it's.
Speaker 8 (38:51):
An uphill battle right now for the defense, and it's
gonna put a ton more pressure on this offense for
the Bengals quickly.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
One last thing. How much does it make you throw
up a little in your mouth when somebody says what
they really need to do is just slow it down
on offense? No, they said that your whole career, you see.
Speaker 14 (39:09):
Baby, I lived that.
Speaker 8 (39:11):
I can't do it anymore. It is not the offense's
responsibility to change their role going forward. It is the
job of the defense and the personnel department to figure
out how to put a competent defense on the field and.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
If not, get it to Marty and just put points
on the board until the scoreboard stops rolling.
Speaker 14 (39:30):
Amen.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
All right, men, Thanks Tony, appreciated brother.
Speaker 16 (39:33):
Thanks Jen.
Speaker 2 (39:34):
All right, there we go our number one in the books.
Keithan Nickoson is going to join us right off the
top of the hour to talk about the Gigsel James
dismissal from the UC basketball program more after this, since
that he's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 10 (39:48):
Thirty from the UC Health.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
Here we go our number two Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty
chand Brendel filling in for mo Egger. As we get
through a beautiful tuesday, I lost everything in here for
(40:33):
a minute. Was that you or was that on my end?
I don't know what happened. Okay, I just I was
grooving and then there was nothing. Plenty of Bengals and
Reds still still coming up here, but kind of the
(40:55):
breaking news of the moment Cincinnati's leading returning score Gizzl James.
It has been announced by Wes Miller. Gizzl's been dealing
with personal issues throughout the summer. He's was removed from
the team last month. He's currently not a member of
our basketball program. As this a personal matter. I will
(41:17):
have no further comment at this time that that comes
from Wes. Aran has are a different pair of headphones
somewhere around here, like I think, I think the headphones
went out and uh, I got to talk to Kegan
nickoson here in a minute, so uh having headphones would
(41:41):
be beneficial. Here's here's what I can say from what
what I know and have known on this situation. I
have to be careful because it is a obviously a
personal matter. If you remember back to about a month ago,
(42:05):
a little over a month ago, there was some unusual
activity on Gisel james Instagram account, and that unusual activity
indicated he was he was leaving Cincinnati trying to go
somewhere else. That was a couple days after he had
(42:29):
been removed from the team, and I do believe at
that point in time there was a pathway back if
everything went exactly as designed. And if you've followed on
social media, you will know things have not gone as designed.
(42:51):
The past couple of days have been exceedingly disturbing, increasingly
disturbing with some of the messages that have been on
Giggle James social media, and it would seem that that
opportunity to work his way back has expired. So to
talk about it, we will go live the Nippert Stadium today, Kegan,
(43:15):
Are you in the IPF where we at?
Speaker 9 (43:19):
We were at Knippery Stadium and then there was some
lightning in the distance. So the advantage of spending one
hundred and thirty four million dollars under roof facility came
into play and now we're we're in the ips slatching
the rest of practice.
Speaker 2 (43:33):
Your reaction, I know, you know, we've kind of known
a little bit more about this than what has been
in the public, and then you've kind of been tuned
in that this was unfortunately the most likely outcome for
a while now. But now that it's official, now that
we have a statement from west Miller, your reaction to
the news on Giggle James.
Speaker 9 (43:56):
Yeah, I think it's unprecedented is the word I would
use for it, because, I mean, you get to summer
and there are times when your roster for the next
season can be greatly impacted in ninety nine percent of
the times through injury, and then this kind of thing happens,
and you don't really know how to feel about it.
I think obviously it brings into question what the team
(44:19):
will look like next year, just losing a leading scorer,
an offensive leader, someone who seemly was kind of the
glue of the offense. I think that's something that it's
going to worry a lot of fans. But I mean,
before you even get to that, you have to think
about how is he doing mentally, how's he doing physically?
You know, where does he go from here? And you
(44:40):
just have to hope that, you know, he does the
best thing for him to get back on the track,
get back on the best track in life, not even
worry about basketball, not even worry about getting back to
the team, but just kind of find some stability in
a time where.
Speaker 6 (44:56):
You're looking for it and you're searching for it.
Speaker 2 (44:59):
Yeah, I mean, I yeah, without pulling the curtain too
far back, I was having a conversation with the source
last night that is familiar with the subject, and all
they could really say is he's sick. Man like, he's sick.
He needs help, and I hope he gets it, because
you know, we've both been around him a lot over
(45:20):
the past two years. He's never been anything but a
good kid to me, always a smile. You know, he
wasn't the most like he was certainly wasn't Troy Copaine
in his dealings with the media. But I never had
an issue with Gisel James, and I wish him the
best and that he can come out on the other
side of whatever it is that's that's probleming him.
Speaker 9 (45:46):
Yeah, and I would echo that. I mean, whenever we
talked to him, whether it was after a loss or
a win, he was always a pros pro and you
could kind of see it from you know, his lineage
and what his dad did his entire life of being
a Hall of Fame running back kind of breads and
be a professional. And that's how he handled himself. And
that's what makes this even more sad because you see
(46:08):
the potential of the kid.
Speaker 6 (46:09):
Had you see the.
Speaker 9 (46:11):
Ceiling that he was, you know he had already hit
or he was still going to hit, just from some
of the performances that he had and kind of how
he represented Cincinnati when he was on the court. And
then it just takes such a seak turn in the
matter of a couple of weeks, a couple of months
over the summer, and now his feature is looking a
(46:32):
lot different.
Speaker 2 (46:33):
Yeah, yeah, it's it's unfortunate fortunately for us. I guess
the show must go on. How does this impact the
basketball program? You removed Gisel from the equation? Is it
still a team with the type of depth, the type
of talent that we were talking about a month ago.
Speaker 14 (46:59):
I and all on it.
Speaker 9 (47:00):
I don't think you can say it is. I think
if if you go into the off season knowing you
don't have Gigsel James, I think that they make different moves. Sure,
in terms of recruiting out of the portal in terms
of maybe even recruiting out of high school. I'm not
going to say that the season is over. I'm not
going to say that they can't make the NCAA tournament.
(47:22):
I think they brought in a ton of talent, and
you know, starting with the true freshman and Shanabia and
keish Ontillery, and we've heard nothing but good things about
keyschan Tillery. And the overwhelming thing is it's going to
be really.
Speaker 6 (47:36):
Hard to keep them off the floor.
Speaker 9 (47:38):
And to be able to say that about a true freshman,
it gives you some sort of ease about this whole situation.
You still have Dayda Thomas, who was good last year.
I think he was the leading three point shooter on
the team last year. So you don't really know what
an offense looks like with Dayde Thomas leading it. You
(47:59):
don't even know if that's going to need a case.
They're run in Kirk Risa, who's an experienced point guard
who's led big twelve offenses. But I'm not going to
sit here and say that it's all going to be okay.
You know, it's not like the football team losing a
safety or anything like that. This is what a lot
of people would call the heart and soul of your
offense for the past two seasons, and he was a
(48:20):
corner scent piece. So it's going to be hard to
adjust to and we're gonna have to wait and see
how Wes miller Kin handles it.
Speaker 6 (48:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (48:28):
The interesting thing I think is Kegan with the word
coming out today that Gisel has not been with the
team for over a month, they at least had a
large portion of their summer program without him. So when
they reconvene here in a week or two, Uh, it's
not going to be like this is a shock to
the system that they put in all this work and
(48:51):
then you get to August and all of a sudden
you have to change the way that you were functioning.
Speaker 9 (48:58):
Yeah, it feels distant and us to say the word
best in any situation, but it probably did happen at
the best possible time, and that you're not forming your roster,
your game plans, your your lineups around the guy who
is now not with you.
Speaker 6 (49:16):
So it's much.
Speaker 9 (49:16):
Better that it happened now than in October November, so
they can kind of rebound and figure stuff out. And
I'll repeat I think that this team has a ton
of talent. But you know, I can't sit here and
say that they're going to be better without Gisel James.
Speaker 2 (49:33):
Right real quick football, How are things going at the
one hundred and forty million dollars indoor practice facility right now?
Speaker 6 (49:43):
Yeah, it's awesome.
Speaker 9 (49:45):
It's a really you know, intense practice. You can kind
of feel that the season is nine days away. Offense
or defense seven on seven. A lot of stuff's going on.
So we're getting close. And you know, everything that we've
seen from fall camps has been very exciting. And you know,
(50:05):
I was pretty optimistic about you know, bringing back Brendon
Stars VI, the trans transfer portal editions. I was optimistic
about that before fall camp, even after springball, and I'm
even more optimistic about what this team can do after
seeing fall and you probably agree. So I'm very very
much sticking forward to it. I don't think I've looked
(50:25):
forward to a football game more in my four year
journalistic career than I am to see them take on
Nebraska Airheadfield. It's going to be a fun one.
Speaker 2 (50:34):
Aarahead Stadium, Aarhead Stadium, whatever, Yeah, ahead, ahead, field, I'll
I've never been there. We've driven past Arahead Stadium when
we were going to uh watch the Bearcats take on
the Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kansas.
Speaker 9 (50:49):
Yeah, Taren was on the ox.
Speaker 2 (50:51):
It was it was awesome Taren and Bob the Rapper.
All right, man, I'll let you get back to practice,
but thanks for checking in. Appreciate it. And uh, where
can everybody find you, including at the best U see
coverage location on the planet, Bearcat Journal dot com.
Speaker 9 (51:16):
Yeah, well you just said it so Bearcat Journal dot
Com also follow me at k nickoson forty two, followed
Chad Brendel, Brent Young, Aaron Smith, David Simone, all those guys,
our new intern Austin bass As I said, it don't
for to get me. Yeah, but we're doing great stuff,
(51:36):
doing great work, and it's just going to wratch it
up here in the next couple of weeks once football
season starts.
Speaker 2 (51:41):
All right, appreciate you, man, see you tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (51:45):
Yeah, thank you.
Speaker 2 (51:46):
All right, there you go. Kegan nickoson barcat journal dot
com on the Gisel James situation, It's unfortunate. It's unfortunate.
The young man needs to get some help, and for
his sake, I hope that he does. I hope that
he does. Just take a break. Phone lines are open,
(52:08):
no more guests outside of Tony for the rest of
the day. This is the Moegger Show, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteenth
Flip Mode.
Speaker 10 (52:24):
Seven, Bust and bus.
Speaker 3 (52:29):
To check it out.
Speaker 2 (52:33):
What you said, ESPN fifteen thirty Chan Brenda filling in
for mo Egger. A lot to get to today. We
still have Tony Pike coming up here shortly with his
second preseason report, and Brenneman and Jones on baseball still
left in this hour and then phone lines open an
(52:55):
hour three Bengals reds Uh, the end of Yah Gisel
James and you see it's got to the phones real quick.
Mike in La Mike, are you better now? Is everything okay?
Speaker 6 (53:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 16 (53:11):
Well I got a uti going on.
Speaker 2 (53:13):
Oh that's not good.
Speaker 16 (53:15):
No, it's pretty painful. Well, once you have the cancers,
you know your immune system. He gets sick really really easy.
But it's good to hear your voice as usual.
Speaker 2 (53:26):
Always good to hear yours, Mike.
Speaker 16 (53:27):
It's a pleasure, absolutely divine pleasure to hear your voice.
Speaker 2 (53:34):
Family good, Family's good. The new girlfriend's dad is going
through it as well. They just put him in hospice
last week, so helping her through that. It's not fun.
It's not fun.
Speaker 16 (53:48):
No, it's just an insidious, freaking disease, as you know.
But anyway, that's not fair to the audience. H The
only how crazy.
Speaker 14 (53:59):
Is this sound to you?
Speaker 16 (54:01):
That the maybe ultimate solution to mediocrity of our teams
in this town, not at the university level, professional level. Yeah,
at the Bengals and the rest.
Speaker 14 (54:15):
Do we just really need new ownership?
Speaker 4 (54:18):
Yes?
Speaker 16 (54:18):
Is that what we really need?
Speaker 2 (54:20):
Yes? The problem is the way that sports have changed, Mike.
Gone are the days that sports ownership was like the
family business. Right, that's out. There's very few places that
that exists anymore. Across NFL, NBA, MLB, hockey, soccer, Like,
(54:46):
there's just not you know, you could argue the Castelinis,
I guess have something else, But when you look at
their comparable wealth, the rest of these people that own
franchises in Major League Baseball have billions, and I think
the net worth of the Castelines is like four or
(55:07):
five hundred thousand dollars. They have the lowest net worth
of any owner in professional sports. So they're running it
much like the Browns do. The Blackburns and the Browns.
They're running it like a family business. They are not
running it like most of these other franchises are being run.
(55:28):
And when you're running it like a family business, what
are you doing. You're watching the bottom line, You're maximizing profits.
You're You're more worried about your financial stake than you
are Steve Cohen Matts doesn't care. Mike doesn't care. I
will spend whatever it takes to win a championship. He's
(55:50):
not there to make a couple, you know, a couple
hundred thousand dollars a year, a million dollars there. He's
not looking at if we if we don't hire a nutritionist,
are our fifty six player football team, we can save
one hundred thousand dollars.
Speaker 16 (56:08):
Is Is it similar to like Mark Cuban?
Speaker 2 (56:10):
Yeah, Cuban kind of started this right Steinbrenner, I guess,
but that the Yankees were kind of his family business.
But he had other business dealings. But that was like
but he wanted to win. He didn't care. Cuban had
a couple of billion dollars from the sale of his company.
All he cared about was winning. He was he didn't
(56:30):
own the Mavericks as a ways to a means for
his family, to provide for his family. He and the
Mavericks because he wanted to be the owner of a
winning franchise.
Speaker 16 (56:43):
So they almost have too much of a vested interest
kind of yeah, kind of, so we're stuck, and we're
stuck like chuck, you know.
Speaker 2 (56:54):
Yeah, because I mean neither of them seemed to have
any interest in really selling. I think it's important to remember,
like the Castellinis, don't the Browns own the Bengals, Like, yeah,
there's other investors whatever, but the Browns owned the Bengals.
The Castellinis aren't like the you know, the the largest
steak in the in this pie, like where if the
(57:15):
Reds were to sell, the Castellinis were gonna get multiple
billion dollars because there's a bunch of other investors that
that would get a chunk of that pie. They're just
the controlling investor.
Speaker 16 (57:30):
Sot or.
Speaker 2 (57:33):
I don't think it is. I don't like it. I
don't think they have fifty one percent. I think there's
enough people that own it that nobody has a controlling
like fifty nobody has a majority interest. There's just broken
up into who has the controlling share.
Speaker 16 (57:50):
So Garry Jones is a good example of the old school.
Speaker 2 (57:53):
Then, yeah, that's his family business. That's how he treats it,
and how does he treat it. He wants he wants clicks,
he wants people talking about him. He wants the things
that don't matter to matter, because those things that don't
matter mean money, but they don't equate to winning. The
Cowboys are no longer in the business of winning. They
(58:15):
don't really care. They just want to make money because
that's how the Jones family makes money.
Speaker 16 (58:23):
Well, that's a dismal. I was hoping there'd be some
insight of because something you could tell. But I had
in my heart I kind of knew what you were
gonna say, but I thought, no, ched knows more than me.
So that's why I wanted to ask you.
Speaker 14 (58:40):
So weren't a real quander here?
Speaker 2 (58:43):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know what you can do.
They have no real need. That doesn't seem like, at
least at this point, that either entity has really any
any motivation to sell. They're making a lot of money.
Why would they sell? They're doing fine?
Speaker 16 (59:00):
Could it take Could it take somebody else to come in?
It would take somebody else to come in then and
make them some outrageous offer.
Speaker 2 (59:09):
Sure, but usually usually what happens is, like you know,
with any business, like it gets we're up for sale
and then people start bidding on on the price. Very
rarely is it somebody just comes in and says, hey,
I want to overpay you for your business. I mean,
maybe it could happen, but I certainly wouldn't hold my
(59:30):
breath on that. And why would the Browns or the
Blackburns want to get out of the family business. The
family business is doing real well for them right now.
I would envision.
Speaker 16 (59:41):
Yeah, it sounds it really sounds like it.
Speaker 14 (59:43):
So so we're doomed in a.
Speaker 16 (59:45):
Way to ever be able to keep Dela Cruz.
Speaker 2 (59:50):
Yeah, I mean if they the best thing I think
that would eat. The best possibility for Ellie would be
he's got what four years left, but you know of
under his rookie contract, so maybe they could get a
four or five year, six year deal done with him
that gives him some security and gives the Reds an
(01:00:12):
extra year or two. But as soon as you get
to near the end of that road, they're going to
have to trade him because they're not going to be
able to pay to keep him.
Speaker 16 (01:00:22):
No, not if the Yankees and the Dog you say, well,
he's still healthy and he's still productive, so we're gonna
buy him.
Speaker 6 (01:00:27):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:00:27):
Also, Mike, there's a very easy example here. Just all
you have to do is go back to Joey Vado.
The Reds invested all that money in Joey Evado and
then they kind of cornered themselves and couldn't use whatever
money to build a strong roster around Joey Vado. So
then what happened. They had put a they put a
(01:00:51):
triple A team around one of the best hitters of
a generation for five years.
Speaker 16 (01:00:58):
So when he's owners over extend themselves on one or
two players, then they effectively diminished the entire organization all
the way down to scouts, to development, all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:01:11):
Right, Yeah, I mean, I don't know, Like the Bengals
just choose to go under staffed in the scouting department,
and I think that is pretty obvious when you look
at how bad they've been at drafting and developing.
Speaker 16 (01:01:29):
Yeah, and they have been bad.
Speaker 2 (01:01:32):
Why this town hasn't turned on Duke Tobin, I'll never understand.
I'm sure Duke is a nice guy. Duke is a bad,
drafter bad. He's not somebody that has done a consistently
good enough job building a football team that can sustain success.
They just got lucky. Could you imagine what this would
(01:01:54):
look like if they just had a good quarterback just
a you know, a standard run of the mill throw
for twenty eight hundred yards, twenty touchdowns and eight interceptions,
like a you know, a pretty.
Speaker 16 (01:02:13):
Good artery Aikman or something.
Speaker 2 (01:02:15):
Yeah, you imagine how much of a disaster this would
be if they didn't have Joe Burrow who and.
Speaker 16 (01:02:23):
Joe ultimately, even though he got all the money, he's
ultimately the ultimately going to be the loser. It's in
his career goals. Sure, well, okay, I wish I hadn't call.
Speaker 2 (01:02:37):
What sounds better this conversation or that ut I Mike, get.
Speaker 16 (01:02:44):
My mind off my singing. I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:50):
Thanks, my appreciative man.
Speaker 16 (01:02:51):
You know what's killing me, though, Jed, is I have
to be on a low sodium diet. Oh blood pressure.
And there is nothing worse than a low sodium die couse.
It limits everything you can eat almost Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
Yeah, that's not fun at all. It's not fun at all, Mike.
All right, man, we'll talk cent. Thanks Mike, take care, Taren,
What do you want me to do here? Take a break?
All right, let's take a break more after this. Cincinnati's
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:03:19):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. Traffic from the.
Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
UC Health Traffic Center. Nearly sixty percent of Americans waiting
on an organ transplant are from multicultural communities. Give the
Gift of life, become an organ donor, or explore living
donation at ucehealth dot com. Slash transplant on westbound two
seventy five. It is an accident on the off ramp
to northbound seventy five. This in Sharon Bildie. Right shoulder
(01:03:46):
is blocked on that ramp. Another crash northbound seventy five,
this one on the entrance ramp from town. I'm at
ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 2 (01:03:54):
This report is sponsored by the Dwyer.
Speaker 1 (01:03:56):
Because PN fifteen thirty years.
Speaker 2 (01:04:00):
Points smokes some dank kind of all in there we go. Oh,
that Tony Pike coming up in about ten minutes. You
know what I'm saying. Fun lines are full. Let's get
to as many as we can here. Greg in Mount Airy, Greg,
what's up?
Speaker 12 (01:04:20):
Hey? I know you're kind of young. But your definition
for a family business and football was a little bit off.
You know, as I explained that to your guy earlier.
Only three families fit the old family own football model,
and that's the Bengals, the Steelers, and I think the
(01:04:40):
Hollis family still owns the Bears up in Chicago. Yeah,
Jones family. You know, Jones had made their money in
oil before he bought the Cowboys. And the same thing
with the Hunt family. You know a lot of people
think that's a family. Yeah, but in his family football thing.
But Hunt made his money and oil before he started
(01:05:01):
the Chief.
Speaker 2 (01:05:02):
Jerry's made a lot of money off the Cowboys.
Speaker 12 (01:05:06):
We had a lot of money what he bought, Yeah, Cowboys. Well,
the income from the football, that's what I mean. That's
the old school family owned football model, which the Bingos
is just like I say, one of three.
Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
Yeah, that was kind of my point. That's that's it's
not a thing anymore. And by the way, Jerry Jones
only paid one hundred and forty million for the Cowboys.
He could probably get twenty billion dollars for the Cowboys
right now.
Speaker 12 (01:05:32):
Yeah, And I also thank you little test two pestimistic
on the Bengals defense. You know, obviously it's gonna be
a work in progress. That's why they they're looking for
the offense to start off fast. But I think, you know,
as the season developed and which stay in the defense
is gonna get better, younger guys are.
Speaker 14 (01:05:50):
Gonna get better. So I don't think the quite.
Speaker 16 (01:05:53):
As doom and doom as it looked like last night.
Speaker 2 (01:05:56):
The problem I have is they were bad in twenty three,
they were bad in twenty four. They didn't really do
anything to drastically change what the defense looks like from
a personnel standpoint. I can't just say I expect them
to be better. There's nothing that says in what they did,
(01:06:19):
there's nothing that says this unit is gonna be better
than the bad unit we saw a year ago. Well,
they what's their strength.
Speaker 12 (01:06:27):
The problem with Amarumo was he didn't know how to
integrate the younger players soon enough.
Speaker 2 (01:06:35):
Yeah, I've said that I don't think low system was
designed for young guys, But I don't know that that
automatically makes Al Golden a better coordinator than Louyna Rimo.
Speaker 12 (01:06:44):
Yeah, but you gotta give them more than two preseason gangs.
Speaker 2 (01:06:47):
I just haven't seen anything to make me feel confident yet, Greg.
Speaker 12 (01:06:51):
Yeah, I understand that feeling overly confident, but you shouldn't
be overly pisseding thistic either. You know they will develop
and get better.
Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
Here's here's why I will say I tend to probably
come off as a little pessimistic. Joe Burrow's career is
only going to last so long. Every year that you
don't surround him with Super Bowl caliber pieces is a
year you're wasting. Who you know, my biggest fear, Greg,
(01:07:21):
what's that is that Joe Burrow is going to end
up as Dan Marino. Dan Marino went to the Super
Bowl in his first year in the NFL and he
never went back. Joe Burrow went in his second year
in the NFL, and I fear with the way that
I see this franchise is operating and the product that
I see that they're putting on the field, I have
(01:07:44):
a fear that Joe Burrow is going to be Dan Marino.
And that's not fair to Joe Burrow.
Speaker 12 (01:07:50):
Well, I disagree. I think the Bengals are being built
to build on a strength, which was of course they
offense and like the Eagles model you know on defense. Now,
what has to happen. Those young guys got to play,
you know.
Speaker 2 (01:08:10):
And you have to draft the right ones, and you got.
Speaker 12 (01:08:13):
To draft the right ones, which is always.
Speaker 2 (01:08:16):
Now there's a reason some teams are really really good
at it and and other teams struggle.
Speaker 12 (01:08:22):
Yeah, well, if you look at over the eating warm
back to the Marvin Lewis days, I remember when Toby
was getting praised for the Bengals ross one of the pops, and.
Speaker 2 (01:08:36):
So he's done. He's done really good. When they've drafted
early in drafts, and then when they've had success and
they haven't been in the first five seven picks, you
have seen things fall off drastically and then they kind
of crater. They have a little run, they get two
or three years where they get high draft picks, they
do a good job, and then he has never been
(01:08:57):
able to succeed drafting in disadvantageous positions. And that's what
the best franchises do, the Eagles, the Chiefs, the Steelers
for however many years, the Ravens, those guys always find
the guys that they want at the back end of
the draft and that's why they stay relevant. And the
(01:09:18):
Bengals haven't been able to do that. And that's why
you get a roster with a lot of holes.
Speaker 14 (01:09:22):
Greg.
Speaker 2 (01:09:22):
I appreciate the conversation, man, it was really good. I
gotta run, all right, Man, all right, thank you. Let's
take a break. Tony Pike up next. Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:09:32):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:09:36):
Traffic from the UC Health Traffic Center. Nearly sixty percent
of Americans waiting on an organ transplant are from multicultural communities.
Give the gift of life, become an organ donor or
explore living donation at UCHealth dot com slash transplant. Right now,
we've got two accidents out there. The first one northbound
(01:09:56):
seventy five. This is on the entrance ramp from town.
And the other one also on the ramp westbound two
seventy five. This one on the exit ramp to northbound
seventy five. And Sharon Bill, I'm at ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 2 (01:10:08):
Earning twenty five dollars.
Speaker 15 (01:10:10):
Now the end fifteen thirty with the latest from Bengals
training camp Brook You Boy, Hollywood Casino, Lawrenceburg, on your
official home of the Cincinnati Bengos, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:10:26):
All right, preseason report time let's take it back to
our guy, Tony Pike. Tony one guy we haven't talked
a lot about yet. Mitch Tensley. Five receptions, seventy three yards,
two touchdowns. Get that man a white Tiger uniform and
(01:10:48):
get him ready for the season opener.
Speaker 8 (01:10:51):
Man, What what else can you want? On a night
where you score two touchdowns, five catches and then in
the second half have arguably the best quarterback in the league.
Praise how good you've been and how much you've earned
a roster spot. I mean, what a night for Tinsley.
He does so against this former team. I do think
it is interesting, Chad, and I know we're probably still
a ways away from it. This team is terrible in
(01:11:13):
defensive side of the ball, and as good as Tinsley was,
he still probably slides behind Jamar Chase. Can he plays
andre Yoshi Vash probably Charlie Jones, who knows what Jermaine
Burton is there and is there an avenue in the
future where you strike while the iron's hot and you
(01:11:33):
try to move Mitchell Tinsley and try to acquire someone
that can help the defense this year, Because as good
as he was last night, and he was phenomenal. Will
he have that big of an impact with this Bengals
offense when they get Gasicki and Fant and Chase Brown
and the receiving core that they have all working in
the same accord, Would it make sense to try to
(01:11:55):
strike while the iron's hot and get someone that can
help you on defense for him?
Speaker 2 (01:11:58):
Maybe make Kenny. Has he ever done that?
Speaker 14 (01:12:02):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:12:03):
That's what they say, right, His corners are just guys
wide receivers that can't catch.
Speaker 8 (01:12:09):
Well, He's got the ball skills to do it, so
I'm willing to put anyone over there.
Speaker 2 (01:12:13):
And he rushed the passer, can you blitz him from
the boundary?
Speaker 14 (01:12:19):
Can he stop the run?
Speaker 2 (01:12:20):
The other big thing I think that I took out
of last night, Evan McPherson looks good. The kicks look
accurate again. He doesn't look like he's second guessing himself.
And why any of those guys that are ever successful
try to change their mechanics. What are you doing? Stop it?
Speaker 6 (01:12:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (01:12:38):
Yeah, I think it was one of the more quiet
storylines of camp, but it was a storyline. He's been
phenomenal during camp. He's made all his kicks in the preseason,
and I thought It was important last night to line
him up from fifty four because when things were going
right for him, it felt like fifty four was thirty four.
It just felt automatic. At all times. Last year, it
felt like he was trying to kick a sixty five
(01:13:00):
yard field goal when he lined up over fifty. So
if you can get confidence back in him, you make
this offense even more deadly. You put more points on
the board, and in a season coming up where it
feels like the margins for air will be minuscule again
because of where the defense is, you're gonna need every
bit of Evan McPherson.
Speaker 2 (01:13:18):
Click thirty seconds. What's the role for my guy? Toz Brooks.
Speaker 8 (01:13:23):
Man, I wouldn't mind seeing him move up to running
back number two. We know what p Ryan is. He's solid,
he can contribute on special teams if you need him
in a pinch at running back. Tos Brooks can pass protect,
and he showed his value last night and making people
miss and also finishing the hard yards. I've said it
all along. You go to a school like Texas Tech,
who is predominantly going to throw the ball seventy times,
(01:13:45):
and you have back to back fifteen hundred yard seasons.
You're getting it done at a high level.
Speaker 14 (01:13:49):
He tore the bear Cats up. We saw that.
Speaker 8 (01:13:52):
I would love to see him slide in as that
running back number two, and I think it was a
steal in the draft for the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (01:13:58):
Agreed. All right, thanks ton We'll talk to you sir. Alright, Jim,
all right, there you go, Tony Pike. Let's take a break.
Brenhaman to Jones on baseball next, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
This report is sponsors and.

You'll get a confirmation text and infos and her message

Speaker 1 (01:14:25):
You done. Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:14:40):
All right, our number three, The Moegger Show, Cincinnati's ESPN
fifteen thirty. Chad Rendel filling in for Moeger. We have
had a busy, busy day. Thank you as always for
(01:15:05):
choosing me. Bengals with the win last night, the first
preseason win since twenty twenty two, thirty one to seventeen
over the Washington Commanders, although fourteen to seven Commanders in
that first quarter, and then I'll give the Bengals credit.
(01:15:31):
The reserves had a pretty good day from there, held
the Washington offense in check, but that, unfortunately is overshadowed
by the struggles from the defense pretty much on all
seven snap. I think there was one snap where they
stopped the running back down in the red zone on
(01:15:55):
the second drive, and then a touchdown shortly thereafter. So
there's reason for concern. And I fully understand the don't panic,
it's the preseason crowd. I get it, but I also
I also reject the constant excuse me that the defense
(01:16:19):
was bland. They didn't show anything. Here's another word, please,
oh sorry, The defense was it was a basic It
was base defense. They didn't show anything. They they didn't,
you know, they didn't want to tip their hand. Well,
if you have good players, you can be base. You
(01:16:41):
can be vanilla. Is that a good one? You like
vanilla better than bland. You can be vanilla and still
have guys in position to make plays. My concern with
this Bles defense through the Eagles game and now following
(01:17:04):
through to the Commander's game they did not have guys
in position to make plays. On running plays, the ball
carrier was running through green grass like there was going
to be a random cow grazing in the pasture before
a Bengal was going to get to the ball carrier.
(01:17:27):
On passing plays in the Eagles game, guys just running
ten yards open. That's talent. That's not Vanella, that's not scheme.
You don't have enough good players, and I don't know
(01:17:48):
what the fixes for that. I don't want to be
pessimistic about it, but like I said to the caller
in the last hour, You've only got Joe Burrow for
so long. Isn't it much easier if you put a
(01:18:12):
really talented team around him and then Joe becomes the
alpha piece of a really cool puzzle, Not Joe becomes,
you know, an advanced lego building around a bunch of
(01:18:34):
building blocks that are designed for a four year old.
That's probably a terrible analogy, but I was workshopping it
as I was live on the air. Please forgive me.
It just doesn't feel like this is going to be
a defense befitting of an MVP caliber quarterback, of a
(01:19:01):
guy that was a unanimous first tier quarterback on the
tiers list. The only other unanimous guy, Pat Mahomes. It
feels like you are doing a disservice to greatness with
what we have seen, and that's all we can really
(01:19:22):
go on, right, all we can really go on is
what we've seen, and we've seen starters on the field
with the intention of have to be ready to start fast,
have to be ready to start the season fast. So
we're gonna put our first teamers out there and we're
(01:19:43):
gonna get them ready for game situations. The offense has
gone exactly as you would want it to go, six drives,
five touchdowns. The defense has been an unmitigated disaster. It's
got to Mark in Florence. Mark, what's going on, my friend?
Speaker 6 (01:20:05):
I think you took the words run out of my
mouth with your last comment. I mean, Joe Burrow gonna
be like, damn mareno, damn Marino went to the Super
Bowl in his first year. It was the second year
I saw his whole career. It was that second year,
(01:20:25):
and they never got a defense good enough as the offense,
and they never had a running game to kind of
balance it out. He got to the championship game. I
know he got there once. With New England, he might
have he might have got to the championship game another time,
(01:20:45):
but I know he got there one more time. But
that's the way this team is trending. And I look
at it like the super Bowl window was closed after that,
after they lost that playoff game in Kansas City, because
they chose not to bring Jesse Bates back. They chose, Yeah,
(01:21:06):
they chose not to keep that defense intact. If they
keep if they keep him and maybe if they just
keep him, if they keep Jesse Bates and maybe go
get another solid corner, I think they I think the
defense would have had a chance to stay to kind
(01:21:30):
of stay at a at least in the middle because
those safeties they got. Now, the thing I noticed about
the safeties with Jesse bas and bon Bell. Did you
ever see deep balls get thrown over their head? You rarely,
if you rarely, if you ever saw that. But this
group of safeties you gonna see that all the time.
(01:21:54):
And I just don't have confidence in that defense that
unless the coaches emphasizes running the ball a little more,
Like if they got the lead in the fourth quarter
and they try to run the ball a little more
to kind of like milk the clock.
Speaker 2 (01:22:11):
No, I hate it, Mark, I hate it. I hate it. No,
absolutely not give Joe Burrow the ball and say go
score touchdowns. I do not want Joe Burrow out there
thinking I got to run Chase Brown here on first
and second down so that we can milk a minute
off the clock. Screw that you got Joe Burrow. Let
(01:22:32):
him cook.
Speaker 6 (01:22:33):
Yeah, I just don't, like I said, I agree with
Jose scenario. I just don't think. I hate to say it.
I just don't think that they'll get back to the
super Bowl under this model that the family runs the
team under. Yeah, because hey, they have a small scouting staff,
(01:22:54):
and when they have to draft players and they're not
in the top ten. If they're not, if they don't
have a real high draft pick, they can't draft when
they when they at the bottom of the draft. I mean,
look at these first round picks they picked on defense,
and ain't.
Speaker 14 (01:23:13):
None of them worked out?
Speaker 2 (01:23:16):
And that that's the problem.
Speaker 6 (01:23:18):
Yeah, when you miss on your first round picks, and
I'll make this point and then I'll get off. When
you miss on your first round picks over and over again,
that sets you back. You got to hit on some
of these first rounders and on defense, they ain't hitting
on nothing on none of their first round picks.
Speaker 2 (01:23:37):
So first, second, third, like, you should be able to
get good defensive players that help you in the second
and third round. The Eagles do it regularly, The Chiefs
do it regularly. You want to know why, to know
when why they're not. But no, no, no, you want
to know why they're not the Chiefs and the Eagles
because they can't do that.
Speaker 14 (01:23:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (01:23:59):
Well, the thing too, if you look at the Bengals
on defense, what what's the identity? So not an idea? Yeah,
so when they're drafting players on defense, they looking for
a certain player to fit a certain part of their defense.
Speaker 7 (01:24:18):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (01:24:20):
I still don't know what the Bengals identity is.
Speaker 2 (01:24:22):
I don't either. I said that earlier. Who are they?
What are they supposed to be? What are they supposed
to be good at? Are they a team that forces turnovers?
Are they a team the pressures the quarterback? Are they
a team that that that flies to the football with
all this athleticism and speed. I don't see any of that,
Like I, you know, I it's frustrating Mark, because I'm
(01:24:42):
with you. I don't know who they are, who they're
supposed to be, who they want to be defensively. Okay,
got it, all right, appreciate it. Let's go to John
and Mason. We might just take phone calls the rest
of the day. You guys want to talk, I'll sit
here and talk. I don't have a guest scheduled until
Tony Pike at the end of the hour. John, what
can I do for you?
Speaker 14 (01:25:05):
Hi?
Speaker 6 (01:25:05):
How are you?
Speaker 2 (01:25:06):
I'm great?
Speaker 14 (01:25:06):
You?
Speaker 7 (01:25:08):
Oh so so?
Speaker 14 (01:25:10):
Okay?
Speaker 6 (01:25:10):
A couple of one.
Speaker 7 (01:25:12):
I couldn't agree more with the last caller, the one
who was complaining about the drafting. I mean, just think
of John Ross and Billy Price most recently.
Speaker 2 (01:25:25):
I mean the offensive Linemanblay. I mean, it's a Miles Murphy.
It's a long list.
Speaker 14 (01:25:33):
It goes on and on.
Speaker 7 (01:25:34):
Yeah, I asked the same question you asked. I like
to think of myself as a president of the What
the hell is uh the Keel doing, Duke Tobin drafting
players because barely past the first round?
Speaker 2 (01:25:56):
Yeah, and even the first round they've missed when look
wh yeah? When when you when you are first and
you get a Joe Burrow or when Jamar Chase falls
to you at five, that's not super difficult. Like, you know,
I feel pretty confident I could have made those picks.
(01:26:16):
But every other one, I mean what it looks like
they probably hit on Memes who I really like. But
but there's not a whole lot of wins in these
past five drafts. And you're getting to a point now, John,
where the Burrow contract is going to kick in, the
Chase and Higgins contracts are going to kick in, and
(01:26:37):
drafting is going to become even more important, not less important.
And my belief and their ability to nail it is
almost non existent because they haven't shown me they can.
Speaker 7 (01:26:52):
That's because they can't. Yeah, it's fair, it's because they're cheap,
but you don't.
Speaker 2 (01:26:58):
You don't have to be cheap. The organization's cheap, Bengal Tan.
The organization's cheap because you need a bigger scouting and
personnel department if you're going to get this right, you
can't rely on four guys to do the work of
ten twelve guys.
Speaker 14 (01:27:15):
Like it.
Speaker 7 (01:27:16):
Good and I've got something that will set a lot
of people's hair on fire, and that is at some
point if they don't support Joe Bengals, who in my
view is a generational talent. He's not just a top
Bengals talent. He's generational. And my hope is that he
(01:27:40):
would pull at Carson Palmer and say, look, this is
not a team, this is not an organization that is
interested in winning, and I want to with what's left
of my career, I want to win, and I want
to win big.
Speaker 2 (01:27:56):
I'm not going to lie that the thought didn't cross
my mind watching the first two Redskins drives and going
how long is Joe gonna put up with this?
Speaker 6 (01:28:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:28:06):
To cross my mind, right, John, Thanks for the call.
Speaker 7 (01:28:10):
Can I add one more thing?
Speaker 2 (01:28:11):
One more thing? Yeah?
Speaker 14 (01:28:13):
Okay?
Speaker 7 (01:28:13):
On Brennaman and Joe regarding the salary camp, one I
can't remember who it might have been, Jerome Holtzman, great
baseball rider years ago.
Speaker 6 (01:28:28):
The reason that.
Speaker 7 (01:28:29):
The owners want a salary camp has less to do
with the players than with each other. They can't they
can't live with each other trying to outbid this guy
and that guy for hundreds of millions of dollars. A
salary cap puts a limit on what they can do,
and that's really why they want it.
Speaker 2 (01:28:51):
I disagree. I think baseball, if you look at it,
the disparity between what the top of the league is
making in the bottom is insane. It's insane, it is.
Speaker 7 (01:29:00):
It is absolutely and you need.
Speaker 2 (01:29:02):
A floor, like more than a cap. I think the
cap helps. They need a floor in baseball because have
you looked at the Reds for next year? Yes, they've
got like twenty million dollars on the books total. Yeah,
in terms of in terms of contract players, not in
terms of like arbitration or guys that are on their
rookie deals, but in terms of and Hunter Green is
(01:29:24):
ten million of that. They need a floor bad. All right, John,
appreciate it, good talk, Thank you, thank you. Let's take
a break, Greg and Randy, we'll get to your next

He's got Kyle Hendricks Tonight Hendrick six and eight on
the season e R just under five. So a little
bit of a departure from the guy that's one O
nine and eighty nine in his career with a three
seventy seven e R. Right hander thirty five years old.
Another opportunity, and that was the big thing for me
(01:30:55):
last night. The Reds are gonna face a lot of
high quality starting pitching down the stretch. They the toughest
remaining schedule in baseball. When you get a guy who's
got an ERA north of five, you better get a win.
(01:31:15):
And last night they were able to do that, Able
to keep the ball rolling, keep the the chain moving along.
Got to get home right around four and five, five
and four on this nine game West Coast swing. To
keep your head afloat. Man, I know, if you're anywhere
near my age, we have all seen the Reds be
(01:31:37):
in contention at some point in our lives. Go out
for this West Coast trip and come home no longer
in contention. So let's be back at it tonight, nine
thirty eight. Greg wants to talk to Bengals. Greg, what's
going on?
Speaker 6 (01:31:51):
Hey, thanks for taking my coach, No problem, man, what's up?
Speaker 4 (01:31:55):
Just really putting not to get off subject, but on
the last tip of y'all with Tom with the baseball
salary cap or I get I'm trying to get a
salary cap, I think it's they need one in my opinion,
when you got single players like Juan Soto and these stills,
just makes more money than a whole team's payroll.
Speaker 14 (01:32:13):
Yeah, that's got to be looked at.
Speaker 4 (01:32:14):
It a little crazy, like what is that shouldn't even
be possible.
Speaker 2 (01:32:18):
Yeah. The one thing that I think is very difficult
with baseball is it has become almost entirely regional. The
TV networks are regional, The people that watch the teams
are regional. Like I remember when I was a kid man,
I was, you know, and some of this was the
Cubs being on WGN and the Braves on TBS, Like
(01:32:38):
you had a chance to really consume a lot of
different teams. I watch the Reds and I you know,
I don't really have a chance to watch anybody else.
I don't know, where how revenue share works in that
world where like the NFL, it's all national TV, right everything,
(01:32:59):
it's it's regional in terms of like who gets to
see what games, but it's all national TV. I don't
know how revenue share in a salary cap system works
in baseball, but they need to figure something out because
this is just silly. It's silly.
Speaker 4 (01:33:13):
But you don't have a hard time with that because
you know, the Dodgers got their own network, you got
the Yes network. They ain't even not getting that up.
Speaker 2 (01:33:20):
Literally, they're not giving up the money from it.
Speaker 4 (01:33:24):
Right if I say I even fixed that issue, how
to even look themselves in the mirror and they look
at the Reds summary and like the Oakland a's, well
Las Vegas a's or whatever, if I it doesn't even
seem even fair to they on the field together, like
that's crazy, right, But the flors of being was going.
I turned the game off. I just I was getting
(01:33:46):
this old man like, this is.
Speaker 10 (01:33:48):
The same thing.
Speaker 4 (01:33:49):
I said, you know what, I'm not going to lean
a preseason game upset in my day, so I'm gonna
go do something else rather than I didn't even know
if we won the game.
Speaker 14 (01:33:59):
I didn't even look back.
Speaker 4 (01:34:01):
I just assumed they was gonna score every single time
and then that this was gonna be the.
Speaker 6 (01:34:05):
End of It reminds me of.
Speaker 4 (01:34:09):
Are these are philosophy?
Speaker 14 (01:34:11):
Anyway?
Speaker 6 (01:34:12):
What did that movie Moneyball?
Speaker 4 (01:34:15):
You remember the scene in the beginning of the Moneyball
when the Scoleton department of the little five or six
old dudes they had and you know, Billy was asking
them like, what are you talking about?
Speaker 14 (01:34:26):
This guy got a good body?
Speaker 4 (01:34:28):
What if that shit would mean he's a good hitter?
And he said, well, he's a good hitter, why don't
he hit good?
Speaker 14 (01:34:34):
It's like the common sense coution is that nobody is asking.
Speaker 4 (01:34:41):
I don't know overall, I think just told men starting
to get a bad rap a little bit. But the
miss is the starting to paddle up. But the well,
you know, there are a lot of hits in there.
I mean, he did draft all these guys, but the
Gino access the Carlos are lapt up.
Speaker 2 (01:34:56):
But that was a different era, like it look, sure,
look if you had a job and you hadn't been
at your good at your job, but for like two
three weeks in a decade, like your job wouldn't be
in safe.
Speaker 4 (01:35:09):
It is a what have you done for me lately?
I'm not gonna gonna you know, sugar cold dead right.
I think most of the other coordinator Loui Maromo get
a bad rep. So like I feel like he's still
a good coordinator.
Speaker 14 (01:35:23):
But it's like, you.
Speaker 4 (01:35:24):
Can't you know, you can't make kool aid if you
ain't got no sugar.
Speaker 14 (01:35:28):
Like we got terrible players.
Speaker 4 (01:35:31):
On his defense and just get a little good players
that you had Jesse Bates and bon Bell Time and
the Woozy. He put together a crazy good scheme and
you know that defense was actually good with good players.
I know that's a foreign concept to this thing.
Speaker 2 (01:35:47):
I think it's it was he needs veterans the way
lou wants to do things. He needs veterans. He needs
an old defense that that is experienced and can switch
on a dime change their style from week to week.
That's not something you can do with a young defense.
And the Bengals decided we're gonna go young, We're gonna
(01:36:09):
save money, and we're gonna be good by drafting our defense,
much like the Chiefs did. The Eagles have done it,
but they drafted good players. They're drafting guys in the
fourth and fifth round. The Bengals can't get guys in
the first and second round to do anything.
Speaker 14 (01:36:26):
Yeah, I got one last day?
Speaker 7 (01:36:28):
All right?
Speaker 4 (01:36:28):
Quick? What is the last night? The linebacker? What's going
on with this kid? He looks completely lost out terribly
Ben Angles.
Speaker 14 (01:36:40):
Oh man, this guy I thought he was.
Speaker 6 (01:36:42):
The guy, but he's not it. Well.
Speaker 2 (01:36:43):
I'm not saying he's not gonna be good, because I
think he can be good. But right now it looks
like he's got one of those heavy magnets in the
front of his pads that just sucks him into offensive
linemen because they just devoured him last time. They devoured him.
Speaker 4 (01:37:00):
Level on this guy, he ain't doing nothing right.
Speaker 6 (01:37:02):
I was about watching.
Speaker 14 (01:37:04):
I turned to jump off.
Speaker 2 (01:37:05):
Appreciate it, thanks, Greg, I appreciate it. Real good digging Dayton.
What's going on deck?
Speaker 11 (01:37:11):
Hey Chad?
Speaker 14 (01:37:12):
How are you, buddy?
Speaker 2 (01:37:13):
I'm great?
Speaker 11 (01:37:15):
Hey, Hey, Chad, I want to ask you a question.
You were talking about the rats. Yeah, they have to come. Uh,
I'd say five and four. But what I want to
ask you. You know, you were talking about this stuff
and everything, but what Uh. I didn't get to see
it last night, but somebody told me, they're going to
be in bad shape if the defense don't. They said
(01:37:38):
the defense was terrible.
Speaker 2 (01:37:39):
I made two or three more incredible plays last night.
Speaker 11 (01:37:45):
Yeah yeah, Are they going up?
Speaker 2 (01:37:48):
I don't know, and I have to I don't think
they have a great defense outside of a couple of guys.
Speaker 11 (01:37:53):
Yeah, And they've got to protect Burrow this year, don't they?
So when games you can't do like last year, now
what they do? They ended up de ruing four and
then if you get behind this year. I don't know, Chad,
but I'm thinking that the offense is good, but what
do they do about the defense?
Speaker 5 (01:38:12):
That kind of.
Speaker 2 (01:38:12):
Worries me, buddy, Yeah, Dick, it's almost going to be
a situation where you're just gonna have to hope and
pray they can get two or three stops and joke
and win a shootout.
Speaker 14 (01:38:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:38:21):
Yeah, they're not a good day Tastick. Appreciate it. I
don't think it's a secret. They're not going to be
in many twenty one to seventeen games this year. Maybe
at halftime, I mean a lot of twenty eight to
twenty four games at the half. Take a break. We're
after this. Since that he's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 1 (01:38:42):
Thirty Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic.
Speaker 3 (01:38:48):

Speaker 7 (01:39:25):

Speaker 2 (01:39:37):
I mean, shouldn't this like, shouldn't this be the intro
for like Tony Segments.
Speaker 17 (01:39:46):
Has got a drag because the jqu got a brand
new bath.
Speaker 2 (01:39:50):
No lineup yet for the Red unfortunately, with first pitch
slated for eight tonight, so that should be out shortly.
I was hoping we'd get that before we get off
the air, but the Reds have not put that out.
Hunter Green on the mound tonight against Kyle Hendricks, so
(01:40:12):
should be another good one out in Los Angeles. Bengals
back at it tomorrow. As Tony said in the last hour,
probably they're only big practice, like they're only legit practice
of the week until they turn attention to the final
preseason game on Saturday, and then you get two weeks.
(01:40:39):
You get two weeks to wait before the season opener.
Bearcats dismiss or. It's been announced that Gisel James has
not been with the program for roughly a month. I
really genuinely think that they did everything they could to
(01:41:04):
try to ensure that Jisel was in a position to
get the help necessary to get things back on track.
I really felt like things had probably disintegrated to a
point that even if he got back on track, I
didn't think he was going to be back on the
(01:41:25):
team this coming season. But that door was left at
least cracked a little. But man, I understand how connected
kids are to social media these days, and I will say,
I think Tarren, you'd agree with this because it wasn't
(01:41:47):
quite what it is now when you were growing up.
Thank goodness that I didn't grow up in that era
where you know, you end up waking up in the
morning like what did I do? We did enough of that, right,
what did I do last night? We did enough of
that without it being documented for everybody to relive after
(01:42:11):
the fact. And like I said with Keen and Nickoson,
Gisel was always in his time here, very pleasant, never
really had any issues win or lose. You could, you know,
tell that he wasn't a guy that you knew to
(01:42:32):
avoid depending on the mood of the day. And it
stinks to see that this is where things have ended
up for him. Hopefully he has a chance to get
things back on track, to get things right, because I
(01:42:55):
think he's a good kid. I do. I think he's
a good kid that is that is made bad decisions
and put himself in a place that you don't want
to find yourself. And he's got a fight ahead of
him now to get this thing back on track, to
get his life back on track. And I don't know
if it includes basketball, but I know he needs probably
(01:43:23):
some some clarity that to date has not been been
there this summer. So no, no Gisel James on the
Cincinnati basketball roster. Tony Pike coming up next for our
(01:43:44):
final camp report of the day. Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:43:51):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:43:54):

you're still going to find a five minute to laid

Speaker 15 (01:44:11):
I presents the Bigness PN fifteen thirty with the latest
from Bengals training cap Look you boy, Skyline, Julie feeling good.
Speaker 1 (01:44:20):
It's Skyline time.
Speaker 15 (01:44:21):
On your official home of the Cincinnati Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:44:29):
Tony, Let's get to last night as the Bengals get
their first preseason win since twenty twenty two. But it
wasn't without some anxiety. I guess is a good word
for it. We have been talking about the offensive line,
we have been talking about the defense. It feels like
(01:44:49):
since the day Joe Burrow got drafted. I did not
walk away from last night feeling any better about either
of those two situations.
Speaker 17 (01:44:58):
No.
Speaker 8 (01:44:58):
I mean, they have some awesome wefpion the receiver and
they have awesome, in my opinion, running back room. But
the question about this team will remain.
Speaker 14 (01:45:08):
Can they block for Joe Burrow?
Speaker 8 (01:45:09):
It's to me, not a great sign when the best
blocking lineman right now is the third round rookie out
of Georgia. Now, that's a good good spot for Doyan
Fairchild and good for the draft. But if he's right
now your most solid offensive lineman, what does that mean
around the rest.
Speaker 14 (01:45:25):
Of the offensive line.
Speaker 8 (01:45:26):
They're obviously going to try to address it with Dalton
Roisner with the Minnesota Vikings. I know he's in town today,
but this is not good enough. I cannot tell you
how confused I was when Jamar Chase and t Higgins
and Chase Brown left the game to see Joe Burrow
out there for another series, and then he gets hit
on that series, and then he goes out there for
another one after that. I don't know how that's possible, because,
(01:45:49):
as Ted Carris put it last week, that's our hopes
and dreams with Joe Burrow. It's a gamble, and it
was a gamble to keep him out there last night.
I do not expect to obviously see Joe Burrow until
they go to Cleveland now going forward, but there's a
lot of work to be done up front between now
and then.
Speaker 2 (01:46:07):
What will be the status of this fan base if
Reisner gets out of here without becoming a Bengal confusion.
Speaker 8 (01:46:14):
I mean, I don't know other way to put it.
He is the most solid option from a pass blocking
guard that's available at Joe Goodberry on the show today
and Joe Goodbarry said, that's who he circled at the
beginning of the offseason.
Speaker 14 (01:46:25):
So to have him still.
Speaker 8 (01:46:27):
There available, Yes, there's probably reasons he's still out there,
but what he excels at is the ability to pass
block for the quarterback. That's what the Bengals need desperately.
I don't know how you can let him leave town
without a deal.
Speaker 2 (01:46:40):
Let's look at the defense. I was doing a podcast
on Bearcat Journal last night as the game started, and Tony,
it felt like every time I turned my head from
the computer screen to the TV screen, Washington was ripping
off a twenty plays US yard run. Given what we've
(01:47:03):
seen in these first two games, I don't know how
anyone can feel anything but a sense of major concern
with this defense.
Speaker 8 (01:47:16):
Yeah, at this point, I don't know where you turn.
They are a defense comprised of players that just don't
seem like they're good enough at the NFL level right now.
It felt like they thought their personnel was better and
that there was the defensive coordinator that needed to make
a change. They did that, and by all accounts, it's
been base defense, which is fine, and okay, they're they're
(01:47:36):
running base there, they're not, you know, showing many looks.
That's fine, But if you're running base defense, you shouldn't
have complete breakdowns on gap responsibilities.
Speaker 14 (01:47:44):
You couldn't.
Speaker 8 (01:47:45):
You shouldn't have gaping holes if you're gonna get beat
or or there's a situation where you lose a one
on one, so be it. They're just out of position.
They look at step slow, they don't look as aggressive.
It just it doesn't feel like things are meshing right
now with Al Golden and the personnel. And again, where
(01:48:05):
do you go to change that. There's not many options,
there's not much room, there's not many players available. It's
going to be very interesting to see if anything can
change between now and the start of the season for
that side of the ball.
Speaker 2 (01:48:17):
Yeah, I just don't know where. I don't know where
you turn for optimism, Zach saying, now we're good in practice,
you know, I say to that Tony, practice practice. We're
talking about practice, man, not a game.
Speaker 8 (01:48:34):
It contradicts, It contradicts everything you've said based on why
it's important to play in the preseason games. If not,
then the starters wouldn't be playing in the preseason games.
I can control practice, I can play a script. I
can do first down, second down, third down. You get
in the game and you've got to react, You've got
to go play fast, and this team is struggling in
(01:48:54):
those situations. I don't know again, where the confidence grows
from between now and and heading to Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (01:49:01):
What if you could say this is my biggest problem.
I think as we sit after two preseason games, if
you could say something was a strength of this defense,
could you find one? What would you say it was?
Speaker 8 (01:49:15):
I don't have one right now because they registered no
sacks last night. They got beat up inside. The linebackers
looked out a position and slow. Maybe you can say corner.
Maybe maybe you can get by with corner. You don't
have genostone out there. Outside of that, I don't know
where you say this defense strengths lie. Maybe you try
(01:49:38):
to just shrink the field. Maybe you try to get
teams into the red zone and then.
Speaker 14 (01:49:43):
Get stuffed there.
Speaker 8 (01:49:43):
But outside of that, it's an uphill battle right now
for the defense, and it's going to put a ton
more pressure on this offense for the Bengals quickly.
Speaker 2 (01:49:50):
One last thing, how much does it make you throw
up a little in your mouth when somebody says what
they really need to do is just slow it down
on offense? Be no, they said that your whole career,
you see, baby.
Speaker 14 (01:50:04):
I lived it. I lived that.
Speaker 8 (01:50:06):
I can't do it anymore. It is not the offense's
responsibility to change their role going forward. It is the
job of the defense and the personnel department to figure
out how to put a competent defense on the field, and.
Speaker 2 (01:50:18):
If not, get it to Marty and just just just
put points on the board until the scoreboard stops rolling.
Speaker 8 (01:50:24):
Amen, all right, man.
Speaker 2 (01:50:26):
Thanks Tony, appreciated brother, Thanks Jim. All Right, that's gonna
do it big. Thanks to everybody that called in. Awesome
audience participation today, Thanks to Tony Pike, Thanks to Keegan Nicholson.
Got to wrap it up. Mose back tomorrow the Moegar
Show by not Moegar, since it that he's ESPN fifteen
thirty
