Speaker 1 (00:00):
Pre season is rapping up, and the Bengals are seeking
to stump the Colts. Cool will or won't make the team.
It's stripes versus stirrups. Get the call live from Dan
Wood and Dave Lapim. Coverage begins Saturday at eleven thirty
AP stream for free on the new and improved iHeartRadio
app or ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the
(00:22):
Cincinnati Vengals.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
All right, what's up? That's us? Good afternoon, I'm Buagger.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank you for listening. We
thanks to the guys who filled in Chad Brendle yesterday,
Tony and KB ken Brew. I called him KB on Monday.
Load management season is over. We are broadcasting live, which
is better than broadcasting dead. We are broadcasting from Bengals
training camp. This is our last day here. We've done
(00:51):
a lot of shows in the morning, Tony and I
from ten to noon. Bengals are practicing right now. I
would call today's workout light, but it's happening right in
front of us. And we get a chance to do
one more show here and get a chance to do
a show during training camp during our time slot, which
we are certainly appreciative of This show is a service
(01:12):
of a door and window.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
They sell the best and service the rest. We want
to thank Adam.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
We we're sponsoring our training camp broadcast, and of course
for his support of the Bengals all these many years.
I'll quickly tell you this, and I in getting set
to do the show here. I didn't get a chance
to hear the ESPN Top of the hour update, but
you may have heard about ten minutes or so ago.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Austin Elmore read.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
A tweet from Adam Schefter of ESPN regarding Lamar Jackson
being taken away from Raven's training camp practice.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Today.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
A Raven spokesperson tells reporters that he got his footstepped
on and he is going to be fine. They kind
of look like, according to folks who were there, looked
like they were looking at his wrist when he walked
off the field. But a Raven spokesperson and do what
you want with this, says, Lamar Jackson is going to
be fine. The Bengals primary spokesperson is Zach Taylor, and
today he announced and I think most of us are
(02:05):
relieved about this, even acknowledging the defense could use some
work against Indy. The starters are not gonna play against
the Colts on Saturday. I'm not sure that's a huge surprise,
I think just based on the way the week was
gonna unfold. Also, Cornell Vohlson is out for the year
with a shoulder injury. Bj Hill working back into a
(02:26):
team related activities on the practice field today as well.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
We'll let you know if anything significant happens today.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Right now, Bengals are doing some seven on seven work
right in front of us, and it's fun to watch.
There's so many moving parts right now with the Bengals,
from reaction to the preseason game, to the daltonon Reisner
scenarios that may or may not unfold, to the very
real concerns about Al Golden's defense, to the Trey Hendrickson situation.
(02:56):
Tony and Austin were talking about Mitchell Tinsley, who wins
the Moegger Award for the training camp receiver who kind
of emerges from the pack and becomes the talk of camp.
Is there a possibility that maybe you could flip him
for something given the number of teams looking for a
wide receiver.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
There's a lot. There's a lot going on with this team.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Tony is gonna join us again coming up at three
forty five. Show rundowns available right now on Twitter thanks
to Emory Federal Credit Union, your credit union with heart
since nineteen thirty nine. Go to Emery FCU dot org.
Anthony Munoz is going to join us at four h
five and we are certainly looking forward to that. Also,
Zach Taylor today had no comment on Dalton Reisner's visit.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
The free agent offensive lineman is reportedly also going to visit.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
With the Seattle Seahawks and may visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Now he came to Cincinnati, went through a visit, went
through a physical. As the Noah Fans situation taught us,
just because a player comes in and leaves without signing
a contract doesn't mean that he's not ultimately gonna end
up playing for your team. You can sign me up,
and I would imagine if you're a Bengals fan, you
(04:01):
will sign up for Dalton Reisner if he's taking the
place of Lucas Patrick. Also, Cordell Folson's shoulder injury. Cordell
has not had a good camp based on what I
have watched. Cordell is obviously coming off a year that
saw him at the end of it get benched and
take a pay cut. But you're obviously being reasonable if
(04:22):
you don't view his injury as something that is necessarily
damaging to the team. But it would open up a
spot on the roster and would open up a spot
on the depth chart at guard a lot on the
Bengals coming up throughout the afternoon. Reds win last night,
and it is you know, we talk about like watching
(04:45):
Joe Burrow against Washington on Monday night and how hard
that was. You know, how nervous you had to feel
if you cared about the Bengals at all watching him
play and sometimes do mystifying things behind that offensive line.
Watching Luis May in the eighth inning last night kind
of gave me the same vibe. Luise May looks like
(05:06):
a guy who's got a very, very bright big league future,
but the dude doesn't throw strikes consistently enough to make
anybody feel like that's a guy you can trust in
a high leverage situation in the middle of a playoff race.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
And yet the.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Last two nights that's where we've been. He was in
the eighth inning last night, the Reds win the ballgame.
And this is a theme that we have touched on
for months now. They lost two just heartbreaking games against
the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday and Saturday, heartbreaking games, games
they should have won, but games that when they lost,
(05:43):
it made you feel like, Okay, this could be it.
Seasons may be about to spiral down the drain. And
then what do they do after blowing the lead on Sunday?
They take advantage of some Milwaukee mistakes both in the
field and in the dugout to win the ballgame, and
they win the first two in Anaheim against the Angel
was going for a sweep tonight, but they are, and
I think.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
This is inarguable.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
They are asking a lot from either players who have
very little experience or players who are Frankly, you know,
baseball's depth chart is not necessarily the same as footballs.
But they're asking for a lot from guys who either
have very little experience or who are fringe players on
(06:25):
the roster.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Luis may Connor Phillips, who have.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Been put in high leverage situations in each of the
last couple of nights I think would fit that description.
There's another Reds injury development Tyler Stevenson, who's been dealing
with a banged up thumb, is gonna go on the
injured list with a broken thumb. This will further test
(06:49):
the reds already questionable depth, and so obviously they're gonna
have to replace him on the roster. They're gonna have
to go to the ranks of Louis Louisville, and Cincinnati
is going to call up a guy named Will Banfield,
who is not having a good offensive season at Louisville.
But he is another guy who, despite his lack of experience,
(07:11):
despite the fact that in an ideal world, he wouldn't
be on the roster in all likelihood with five and
a half weeks to go, is going to find him
in a part of a big situation with a lot
on the line, high leverage situation at the plate, when
he hasn't been good offensively this season at Louisville and
doesn't have any big league experience. The death has been
(07:31):
tested often this season. I think it's fair to wonder
how much more can it be tested before this team wilts.
That said, every time we have expected the Reds to
wilt this season, they have figured out a way not to.
Hunter Green was awesome last night. You know, we talked
a lot about Hunter Green last week in his return,
(07:52):
Jason Williams of The Inquirer wrote the piece about how
the red should try to trade Hunter Green this offseason.
We will spend some time on today, but I'll just
ask you this. If this offseason, Hunter Green became available
as a free agent and had just you know, pitched
his team control years for somebody else, and came with
(08:15):
a price tag next year of eight point three million dollars,
you would be begging the Reds to go sign that guy.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Right. You would be begging the.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Reds to go sign a guy who appeared in an
All Star Game last year, a guy with his just
arm talent, for lack of a better way of putting it,
a guy with his upside, a guy who's just twenty
six years old. You would be begging the Reds to
sign that guy in free agency. Since he is on
the Reds, I will beg them to not trade him.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
I will also do this.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
You know, we've talked a lot about the bullpen this
season and the fringes of the roster and how good
the starting staff has been all season long, and we
you know, we use the term lean on like they've
They've got a lean on on pitching and defense. It's
what they did at the deadline right specifically with kee
Brian Hayes, who defensively has been awesome.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
They're gonna lean on pitching and defense.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
They're really gonna have to lean on their starting pitching
here down the last five and a half weeks of
the season, because it feels like the bullpen depth is
being tested.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
They have a lot of guys who have been overworked, overused.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
They just had to give their closer consecutive days off
despite the fact they're playing in really close games. The
starting staff has been the strength of this team all
season long. Starting staff is gonna have to be even
better down the stretch than it's been already this year.
Last night felt like they averted disaster. And look, Tito
(09:41):
Francona gets beaten up for using a guy like Luise
May in the eighth inning last night, and I'll be
the first one to tell you that dude drives me
nuts because he can't throw strikes. But if you give
a manager Luise May, and if you give a manager
of a team that plays in a lot of close games,
that's playing in a postseason playing for a postseason Berth
the manner manager is eventually going to use Luis May
(10:02):
in a big situation. Tito Francona did that last night.
It's fourteen minutes after three o'clock. Tony Pike is gonna
join us every hour today with live training camp reports.
It's a little bit different right Tony's giving us live
training camp reports. But I'm the one here at training camp.
It's interesting. Maybe I could just do them myself, but
(10:22):
I think it'd be more fun if we could have
Tony on the show, So we'll talk with him coming
up at three forty five. Also, four forty five and
five forty five. Bengals defense on Monday did what it did.
It's been talked about a bunch since Monday night. There's
no getting around the fact that the Bengals defensively left
a lot to be desired, and that's putting it gently.
We have to put everything through a different type of
(10:45):
filter for this team. We'll do that with the defense
when we come back. It's fourteen minutes after three o'clock.
By the way, we're broadcasting from the Airport Pain and
Body Broadcast area. Our guests join us on the Ray
Saint Clair Roofing Hotline, and we want to thank our

all good at Delta Dental, oh dot com. There is
only one question to ask about the Bengals defense, maybe two.
I will ask one and maybe the other when we
come back to Bengals training camp on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station, Cincinnatis from a Bengals training camp. Thanks
(11:51):
to AE Door and Window Molleger ESPN fifteen thirty, thank
you so much for joining us broadcasting from the Airport,
Pain and Body broadcast area. Bengal going through hurry up
offense with the second team unit. First team offense is
not expected to play the source there being the head
coach Zach Taylor.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
We saw all.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Sorts of first teamers on Monday, so gonna get a
whole lot of backups and backups to the backups on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Game at one o'clock on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
It's a day game, rare preseason day game, live on
ESPN fifteen thirty with pregame coverage beginning at eleven thirty.
We have learned very little about the Bengals this camp. Now,
we've seen some stuff. We've seen some stuff that has mattered.
But you know, if you if you thought, if you
thought you could or were expecting to walk away from
(12:40):
the preseason thinking that the Bengals defense is actually gonna
be much better than expected, I don't know how you
arrived at that conclusion, especially if you did watch the
two preseason games or I guess the first two preseason games.
We haven't learned much. Like Joe Burrow has played well
in the two preseason games. We know Joe Burrow is good.
Nothing in the preseason was going to do anything to
(13:01):
change our mind in that regard. We know he is good.
We know this team has offensive line issues. How do
I know that they're actively pursuing an offensive lineman Dalton Riisner,
who you can make an argument would step in and
immediately be a starter for this football team. That's not
what a team does if it's set on the offensive line.
And we know the defense is a major work in
(13:22):
progress and putting it gently, that has been confirmed here
so far in the preseason. I put everything through this
one this one litmus test, or through this one filter.
I guess I should say, can you win a championship
(13:43):
with fill in the blank? Can you win a championship
with this defense? There's different ways we have talked about it,
like can can Al Golden coach them up to the
extent that their league average?
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Can they have a league average defense this year? You know?
Speaker 3 (14:00):
He was same with the offensive line, right, Like I
want to know one thing? Can you win a championship with?
Can you win a championship with this defense? The Bengals,
I think most would say, are kind of outside the
absolute upper crust of the AFC. And that's fair and
that's reasonable. Like you would say the upper cross is Baltimore,
(14:21):
Kansas City, and Buffalo, well a whole bunch of other
teams who can you know, maybe join that mix or
maybe as the season unfolds, replaced one of the teams
in that mix. But I think even your most homerrific
Bengals fan would acknowledge that because of not making the
playoffs in either of the last two years, and they're
(14:41):
kind of built in roster questions that this team doesn't
necessarily belong in the conversation with the best of the
best in the AFC. That does not mean they can't
make the playoffs. I expect them to. That doesn't mean
that when they make the playoffs they can't be a
really tough out. I think they would. But can you
win a championship? But that's where we that's where we are.
(15:05):
You're in year six of your first round draft choice
from twenty twenty, who has established himself as a bonafied
star at the most important position in the entire sport.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Like he's a dude.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Joe Burrow is a championship caliber quarterback. There is no
question about how good he is. You may prefer Lamar Jackson,
you may prefer Josh Allen, but there's no question that
you cannot at least have a conversation about who the
very best quarterbacks in the NFL are without making Joe Burrow.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
A part of the conversation.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
We know you can win a championship with him, we
also know that he needs help, and so I put
everything through this you know, basic filter. Right with this defense,
can you win a championship by the middle of October?
Speaker 2 (15:47):
Maybe the answer is yes.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
Right now, the answer is no, And that was the
answer coming into the season, right like before the season started,
the Bengals last year had a terrible defense. You can't
win a championship with this defense as it's currently built.
That's the obvious answer that everybody had coming into the season.
But could they do anything in the preseason to make
you feel like the answer could be different? So far,
(16:10):
at least, the answer has been no. They absolutely got
worked against the Washington Commanders on Monday.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
Night, beaten up at the point of attack.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
They took bad angles like they got worked against Washington.
Now you may go, well, you know they weren't showing
all that much, okay, Or you may go, look at
no reason to think that by the middle of the season,
Al Golden won't have this unit coached up to a
point where it's significantly better. That's a very good possibility.
(16:39):
But until that happens. Until that actually happens, until defensive
improvement is something we see and not something that we
merely talk about or hope for openly, then you're gonna
have a hard time taking this team's championship bona fide seriously.
As a general rule, we all say, well, they've just
got to be middle of the pack. They've just got
to be a middle of the back defense. Okay, there's
(17:02):
there's certainly something to that. They don't need to be
the eighty five Bears of the two thousand Ravens. They
don't need to be a top five defense. I'll acknowledge that.
But they've got to do they've got to do significantly
better than they did last year, especially in the fourth quarter,
especially against really good teams. And they've got to be
better than they've shown so far here in the preseason.
(17:24):
And so like you know that, that to me is
I put the everything on this team for the same filter.
Can you win a title with this offensive line is
currently constructed? It's hard to feel like the answer is yes.
Can you win a championship with this defense as currently constructed?
The way it has played so far this preseason and
(17:46):
the way that many of those guys who make up
the majority of the guys on the defense this year
played last season.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Can you win a championship with it? Right now? The
answer is not yes.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
And so you know, maybe maybe Al Golden gets this
unit to a point where by the middle of the
year they're really really good. When that happens, or revisit
the question until then, the answer is no, they can't
win a championship with this defense. Can they make the
playoffs with it?
Speaker 2 (18:11):
Yes? Can they win a title?
Speaker 3 (18:13):
Like everything that Joe Burrow deserves this, I think the
organization to a degree has earned this right. That's that's
how we talk about everything. Can you win a championship? So, yes,
the defense will get better. Yes, they get the soft
landing of the Cleveland Browns and Joe Flacco week one. Yes,
they have the benefit of time on their side. They
(18:34):
have a few weeks to go before the season begins,
and they have a long season in front of them,
where you know, teams do get better and units do improve,
and all of those things may happen. But until we
see tangible evidence that the Bengals have a defense that
can be trusted on or trusted and relied upon. And
one that you feel like has a good chance of
(18:56):
making a stop or getting a turnover in a big
situation in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
Then it's going to be hard to have.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
It's going to be hard to take their championship bona
fide seriously because you can't take their defense seriously.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
That's not skepticism, it's realism.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
It's realism based on last year's results and a defense
that has a lot of dudes from last year's team
that is unfortunately yielding very similar looking results to last year.

Speaker 2 (20:43):
Is with us. What is up? Oh?
Speaker 6 (20:44):
What a pleasure this is, big man. No, it's an
absolute pleasure to be here. I'm thrill. I saw you
in the corner of my eye, said, you know what,
I gotta go. Say what up to my man?
Speaker 2 (20:53):
It's good to have you.
Speaker 6 (20:54):
I appreciate it. Great to be here. My first time
in Cincinnati, actually first time ever. You've never been here before,
never never been to Cincinnati. I was telling you my
mom is from uh Lima. Yeah, so I got some
Ohio connects, but no first time in Cincy. Wow, yeah,
very good. I mean, you know, it's a it's a
different setup. We've been going around camps and this is
an interesting setup. But I like it because it's downtown
(21:15):
Cincinnati and it's all in one spot. Yeah, you know,
it's pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
You know, those of us who grew up watching teams
travel away, you know they were in Wilmington, Ohio. I
was a Canada, Georgetown, Kentucky. I know the players like
it more. And obviously that the portion of training camp
where fans could be here is coming gone. But it's
when fans are here and they can go somewhere to
eat downtown and park close by.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
It's it's awesome.
Speaker 6 (21:38):
Yeah, no, it's awesome. So yeah, I'm thrilled to be here.
Speaker 3 (21:40):
You chasing like any Trey Hendrickson news for me, got
anything new?
Speaker 6 (21:43):
No, I got nothing new on Tree. I wish I did,
trust me, I wish I did. But you know I
reported yesterday they Dalton Rising in a visit. Yeah, and
the visit went well, and I think they'll continue to
have conversations. He's got some other teams on him as well.
I think I saw that the guard went down for
the year, right Cordell Holts, Yeah, yeah, and he started
(22:05):
forty eight games, so that hurts as well. But I
know Cincinnati has been looking for some interior offensive line depth,
and obviously Dalton, who started something like seventy games, could fit. Obviously,
money talks, sure at this time of the year, a
lot of veterans like to make sure they get the
absolute best deal and best spot. But from all intense purposes,
it went really well, and if I'm a Bengals fan,
(22:27):
I'd like to see him here.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
I think we hope that it's the same pattern as
the Noah fan thing right where he comes in doesn't sign,
but it's like, all right, you know they're gonna keep talking.
He's gonna go check out some situations elsewhere. I don't
know that there was a better one for a guy
like Noah Fan at tight end. Should I feel the
same way about Daltoneisner guard?
Speaker 2 (22:47):
Well.
Speaker 6 (22:47):
The thing about Noah that was great with this system,
and this is one of the reasons I think both
sides were so excited about it was it allows you
to play Mike as like a big slot guy, right,
and then Noah can your more traditional tight end, which
I think both sides really liked with Dalton. You know,
his versatility, his calling card has always been toughness. He's
(23:09):
like a real tough, kind of maller type of player.
Has always been productive as a run blocker. Last year,
per Pff did not give up a sack, which I
think is a big bonus. And obviously we saw against
Washington that the offensive line is still you know, could
use some interior help. So, you know, I don't know
if any if it's perfect, but it's it's a pretty
(23:29):
good one.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
It's not bad, especially given the fact that the Lucas
Patrick thing to this point, at least only training camp
hasn't worked out. Yeah, and I think to a degree
you can credit them for going, okay, we got to
try something else. At the same time, why are we
still looking for solutions in mid August?
Speaker 6 (23:45):
Right? Well, and so in terms of the draft, remind
me what did they draft off Its.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
A line Dylan Fairchild, right third rounder, who's been fine.
I think, you know, it's going to be a starter.
I think everybody's pretty happy with him. But I think
a lot of us when the off season started, we
expected maybe two free agents at guard, maybe a swing tackle,
and they only signed.
Speaker 6 (24:03):
One right, right, And it hasn't worked out.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
It hasn't worked out.
Speaker 6 (24:05):
No, Yeah, yeah, I think uh, you know, I'm gonna
speak with uh. I think Orlando today and it sounds
like he's had a good camp.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (24:13):
Yeah, So, so the edges are okay.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
The edges are fine, Marius Mims, right, you know, there's.
Speaker 6 (24:19):
The young guy who has a lot of upside.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
And I think Orlando Brown, you know what he is.
Last year, all the pressure came up the middle. And
in the two preseason games, especially on Monday Night, again,
the pressure came up in the middle.
Speaker 6 (24:30):
Yeah, there's definitely a sense around the league that it
has been for the last few weeks that the Bengals
are looking for interior offensive line. You know, Reisner is
probably more expensive than some of the other guys. It's
not like he's gonna cost you four million. But he's
not a VSP guy either, so he's got to be
somewhere in between.
Speaker 2 (24:48):
The Hendrickson stuff. Right.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
So they're listening to offers now, which is you know,
that's all well and good. I think a lot of
us the The immediate reaction was, what you couldn't have
done that? And I know they listened. But if you
were gonna trade him, you trade him in March for April?
Speaker 2 (25:01):
Yeah, in August?
Speaker 6 (25:02):
Yeah, yeah, you probably have. Imagine Bengals fans have been
monitoring the situation as closely as they've moditored anything. And
with Tray, it's tough because I think both sides are
really dug in.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (25:17):
When that happens, and when both sides feel like they're
absolutely right, they're correct, it's very hard to move. And
I think Tray, also because of his production, obviously leading
the league in sacks, feels like, Okay, this is my
last paycheck or my last huge opportunity to get paid.
And a lot of has been made about the being thirty,
(25:38):
but pass rushers traditionally don't necessarily fall off a cliff
at thirty. It's the same with receivers. There's a lot
of research that tells us now that you can have
really good seasons into year thirty two, thirty three, and
Tray has been very durable. If I'm a Bengals fan,
you know, I can't think of a guy who is
more deserving at this point, and I know, Joe has
(25:58):
made it very clear as well. Oh that you know,
he wanted obviously Gaseki back, he wanted the two receivers back.
I think this is the last piece of the puzzle.
And if Cincinnati wants to have the type of year
they think they can have, which is potentially an AFC contender,
they need trade there.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
I think for a lot of folks there's a sense
of inevitability. Joe even mentioned this on Monday night. Look,
we've got a track record. He mentioned his own deal
got announced the night of the season opener, right, aj
Green many years ago signed his contractors.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
He's walking to the bus to get on the plane
to go to Oakland.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
So should should we still feel that way, like there's
still some time it will get done.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
They just gotta the shots and eyes and cross some te's.
Is that no a good way of looking at it.
Speaker 6 (26:37):
It's it's well, it's been the structure. I think parts
of the deal have been good, but the structure has
been a has been a big sticking point for Trey.
If you look at the other two big contract disputes,
Washington with Terry McLaurin and obviously Dallas with dak which
or with Micah, which is more comparable because of the
pass rusher. You know, both of those both of those
sides are really dug in as well. And I was
(26:58):
asked earlier today to for cast those three, and it's
it's really hard to do. I I don't know. If
I would love to be able to tell you most
sit here two weeks before the opener and tell you
that Henderson's gonna get done. I just I can't do it.
Speaker 3 (27:10):
Yeah, should we view his you know, he has stated
all along no intention of playing on his current deal.
Speaker 2 (27:17):
Right with most of these.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
Holdouts, I just I default to the fact that they're
not going to turn down the game check right nine
hundred K. If he misses the first game against Cleveland.
Should I still do that?
Speaker 6 (27:27):
I wouldn't necessarily do that, because, like I was saying earlier,
with Trey, he he's like a really when when he's
he's the type of guy from what I understand that
when he has conviction, he sticks to it in a major,
major way. And I go back to I think it
was the first time he spoke publicly out here. It
was about a month a couple months ago. Yeah, and
he said that, and I I would I would hold
(27:49):
him to it.
Speaker 3 (27:50):
Yeah, he's a different type dude. I think that day
when he did that, if anything else, that should have
been the takeaway right right, this is this is a
different type of fat How many camps have you been
to this year?
Speaker 6 (28:00):
So we've done? We just hid Denver looks really good, right,
I must Yeah, Jets, Giants, obviously, Cincinnati. I think we
got Jacksonville, Indianapolis. But Washington, so yeah, a good amount.
Speaker 2 (28:17):
And this is maybe the last one.
Speaker 6 (28:19):
I think this is the last one potentially. Yeah, And
and you know, everyone, here's the thing about training camps.
Everyone believes that they have a great team. Everyone will
tell you how great their fifth round rookie, the d
f A, that's gonna it's gonna take the league by storm.
And then you know, my history will tell you that
most of those guys aren't gonna have the type of impact,
(28:41):
certainly not right away. But uh, I tell you, if
I'm a Bengals fan, the players, I'm probably most excited
about young guys. Chase Brown, I think, super explosive, healthy.
I'm really excited to see Yoshavas. I think this is
a massive opportunity for him. And then you mentioned mems earlier.
I feel like there's a level, or multiple levels for
(29:04):
him to get to. When he was coming out, he
was talked about as this athletic specimen who the upside
was enormous and if I'm a Bengals fan, I really
really want to see it this year and I think
you will.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
But you know what I noticed, though, is you did
not mention one defensive.
Speaker 6 (29:19):
Player, and that's a problem I probably should have. Who
are Bengals fans most excited about defensive?
Speaker 3 (29:23):
The guy that I'm excited for is Shamar Stewart. Yeah,
because I give that dude a lot of credit. All
he did for months was talking about his contract. He
gets on the field and he he balls out.
Speaker 6 (29:32):
Yeah. No, I would actually agree with that as well.
And with Shamar, you know, obviously didn't have necessarily the
production in college, but the upside the character both elite
and then also the fact that you know he didn't
have the reps and then, like you said, balled out.
His upside was as high as anyone in the draft
yet maybe the best combine I've ever seen. And he's
(29:53):
a really interesting kid, and I think his work ethic
from everything I've been told, has been awesome. I know
it's early, but that's what you need. And obviously, considering
we don't know what's gonna happen with Tray, you're gonna
need that pass Rusher. So I'm very excited about.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
Some mar student you've got to run. Can thank you
enough My pleasure, joy your time in Cincinnati. Awesome to
meet in person.
Speaker 6 (30:12):
Pleasure. Thank you so much.
Speaker 2 (30:14):

Speaker 3 (31:13):
All throughout training camp, Tony Pike joins us every hour
at three forty five, four forty five, and five forty five.
I am broadcasting from Bengals training Camp. Tony is in
an undisclosed location also here at training camp, which is
why he's not sitting next to me. Hi, Tony, how
are you.
Speaker 4 (31:31):
Well great?
Speaker 7 (31:31):
I had to run out and feel what's happened in
the parking lot, and then I had to make sure
I didn't get a ticket for parking today. So it's
a It's been an eventful forty five minutes since since
Sincy three sixty wrapped up.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
No question, we miss you.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
Practice has already for the most part, adjourned. We're not
going to see many first teamers on Saturday when the
Bengals take on the Indianapolis Colts. Obviously, in the aftermath
of Monday night, all most of us have done has
done has focused on the defense and how bad it
looked against the com and I'm disappointed. I'm not overly surprised.
(32:06):
If you're al Golden, is there a fix in the
offing to this unit between now in the first game
on September the seventh.
Speaker 7 (32:14):
If you take what the coaches have said, then I
don't know that there's a fix because all we've heard
is that they have ran base packages. They have not
wanted to show anything. Well, if you run base and
you don't show anything, that would tell me you're running
the simplest form of a defense, which means you should
not be filling incorrect gaps, you should not be running
into each other. You shouldn't be failing to perform the
(32:36):
most basic of defensive line stunts. You should win one
on one battles. This defense has done none of that.
They have been gassed on the ground, They have been
gassed all over the field. And if you're leading me
to believe that this team is just going to magically
flip a switch and they're going to be competitive defensively,
(32:56):
they're going to be more physical, I don't see how
that's the case. They have been the lesser of the
aggressive teams in both preseason games, and that's what the
film says. I don't know how you can hide from.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
That, Zach Taylor says, Look, I've seen what I need
to see in practice, and so what everybody is seeing
in the games isn't that big of a deal.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
What's your reaction to that?
Speaker 7 (33:19):
Speaking out of both sides of the mouth right now,
Because in the same vein you have talked about how
important preseason reps are for Joe Burrow in the offense,
and this offense has the capability to be the best
offense in the NFL. So, on one hand, you say
that that preseason reps are important because the offense needs them. Well,
if the best offense in the league needs those preseason reps,
(33:40):
then how can you say that the best or that
the defense for the Bengals doesn't need those preseason reps.
Those two things don't add up. We have seen the
defense of the Bengals succeed in days at practice for
the Bengals, and yet they've still gone out and put
up bad performances and those opportunities in the preseason. So
it comes across to me as you're talking a little
(34:01):
bit out of both sides of the mouth.
Speaker 3 (34:02):
Yeah, I would agree with that, Tony. We'll talk again
out of one side of your mouth. At four forty five.
Speaker 8 (34:07):
Thanks so much, Thanks.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
Mo Tony joining us for his hourly training camp reports
on the Ray Saint Clair Roofing Hotline. He is back
with me at four forty five since he three to
sixty tomorrow at noon right here on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
And don't forget on.
Speaker 3 (34:22):
Saturday, it's a one o'clock game the uh the rare,
although around the league, not as rare as they used
to be. Daytime preseason game Bengals and Colts, Cincinnati's lone
home preseason game one o'clock on Saturday afternoon on ESPN
fifteen thirty. Our pregame coverage will get underway at eleven
(34:42):
thirty on Saturday morning.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
Uh, we have one hour in the books.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
Five point three seven four nine fifteen thirty is our
phone number eight six six seven zero two three seven
seven six will get you in as well. I don't
think there's a such a thing as overreacting to what
you're watching from the Bengals on defense. When something is
the continuation of something as bad as last year's overall
defensive performances weren't, I don't know how you underreact to that,
(35:11):
like is it is a continuation now you may go, look,
Al Golden's a new defensive coordinator here, and he's gonna
need time. He needs time to blend his system with
the players the Bengals have, and there is validity to that.
The question becomes, though, between now and when that happens,
(35:32):
how many games will the Bengals lose because of their defense.
We'll spend some time on that a little bit later on,
plus more on the Reds win last night, But first,
I can't wait to broadcast from Anthony Munio's his top
golf tailgate event. He joins us next on ESPN fifteen thirty.

Coming up at four forty five two weeks from tomorrow.
Is one of my favorite events to broadcast from and
(36:42):
it really sort of signals the start of the NFL
season because it happens on the day of the first
NFL game. The Anthony Munoz Foundation Top Golf Tailgate Thursday,
September fourth. We are going to be there doing our
show live as we are every year. It is a
great fundraise for a great foundation, obviously, the Anthony Munhos Foundation.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
Again.
Speaker 3 (37:04):
It's going to be at Top Golf in Westchester two
weeks from tomorrow. It's all put on by the Hall
of Famer, the Great Anthony Munhos, who joins us.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
Now. It's awesome to have you as always, sir. How
are you.
Speaker 8 (37:18):
How you doing tonight? Man? I'm doing great. Thanks for
having me on. I appreciate it. And yet, wait, you
know what I got Wait, you know what I got
waiting for you besides a lot of food and good
people at Top Golf. But yeah, no, we're looking forward
to it. It's always a great event.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
You're speaking my language, you're speaking my language. It's a
great event. It's gotten bigger and bigger. You have a
lot of your former teammates show up, and so for
the uninitiated, and I can't wait to broadcast from there.
But for those who here top Golf and they go, okay,
wait a minute, I know what that is. What's that
all about? What happens on the fourth.
Speaker 8 (37:56):
Well, here it is. I'm going to start out by saying, Okay,
we're nearly sold out. That's the first thing. We need
all bays to be sold.
Speaker 7 (38:04):
So maybe some of your.
Speaker 8 (38:05):
Listeners can say, man, this sounds like a great event,
a great cause. We've raised over nearly three hundred and
fifty thousand dollars through the event alone since twenty seventeen.
I mean, with that much money, we can go seventeen scholarships,
we can go four hundred kids overnight camp, we can
go thousand students to leadership seminar. So there's a lot
we can do with that. We have six bays left
(38:27):
at one thousand dollars a bay, six people. Just think
about it, six people, food, all the food and drinks
you want all the Top Golf. You get to see
Moeggar live right at the doing the show. A lot
of the guys that they'll come to that played with.
But yeah, you've been there, so I mean it's a
great event. As you mentioned, Thursday, September fourth, the Ventura,
(38:49):
the Premier Event Center, presents it. They're the sponsor Westchester
Top Golf. I Like I said, if you're a base partnership,
you have an opportunity for six people put to bay dinner, drinks,
get a chance to bid on some things. It's a
thousand dollars, which is a deal. You can visit Munho's
Foundation dot org. But man, I'll tell you what. It's
(39:11):
so much fun. You know a lot of people think
golf and they think all right, four five hours, six
hours out on the golf course, you know, running around,
But this is right there. You got all these days
on one level. You can hit a few balls, you
can go up and down, stay hi to your friends.
They had some of the former players. You know, get
some foods, some drinks. But it's a pretty cool event.
(39:31):
I mean, you know when that opened up, the thoughts
started running through my mind how we could utilize this
not eliminate our golf tournament because that continues to go.
We'll have our twenty fifth anniversary next year. But like
I said, since twenty seventeen, we've been doing the Top
Golf the opening night of the season, which is September fourth,
and it's just a lot of fun. I mean, you
(39:51):
can get six people. You don't have to be at
the golfers. You can get three couples, you get some
of your buddies and just come have some fun.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
And at it is.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
You could watch the first NFL game, which is obviously
a huge event. The food at Top Golf is top notch.
There's always a ton of like silent auction items like
it really is. It's it's about golf, right, that's the centerpiece,
But there's so much more to the event.
Speaker 8 (40:16):
There really is. I mean, and you mentioned you can
stay and watch a game. Of course, I think it's
the Eagles and the Cowboys of the NFC whatever, you know,
But I said, I mean, it's the world champions. I mean,
you got to give them some respect, the world's defending
world champion Eagles. Pretty good football team. But you're right,
the main thing is golf. But then just think about
(40:36):
like I read read some of the things you can
sponsor with the foundation. You know, we're twenty four years old.
I mean, we've worked with you and we're from fifty
five to sixty thousand kids in this great community, and
it's events like this It give us an opportunity to
continue to impact kids and like I mentioned, through scholarships,
through overnight camps, through leadership seminars, through mentoring. There's a
(40:59):
lot that we do, eight different programs with our staff,
and we have a leading staff. But yeah, so just
think about the fun, the food, the drinks, the game,
and just but you know, what you're doing is helping
a lot of kids in this great community, which is
action of mind and why I've been doing this for
twenty four years at least within the structure of the
(41:21):
Anthony Munnez Foundation.
Speaker 2 (41:22):
Yeah, you know, we talk about it every year.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
The work that you and your organization does is it's remarkable.
We've talked about so many of the success stories, and
we will even further when I'm out there on the fourth.
The thing about this event that always stands out to
me though, is you know you talk about how you
ask your former teammates to show up and they're there.
I've been to a lot of events right where like
(41:46):
the celebrity, if you will, is kind of out of reach,
can't reach out and touch them.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
That's not the case at your event.
Speaker 8 (41:52):
No, no, you know, you have to understand, you know,
and I hate to keep saying, well when we play,
but when we're playing at Old Riverfront Stadium, would walk
out of the door of the locker and I understand
times are different, but the fans would be right outside
the doors of the locker room just saying great game,
or you know, get your rear in and gear for
next year. Play better. But you know, but they're right there.
(42:13):
And that's the thing about guys like Jie Walter and
Jim Breach and with David Foulcher, and you know, guys
like that Mark Collins, who's in the area. I mean,
they just come over and they just they mingle, they interact,
and you know, we've been in this community for still long.
Yet you know, we hopefully get Jim Breached there, the
all time leading scorer. He's coaching over at Lakota East.
(42:35):
Hopefully his practice will be over and he'll be there.
But you know, it's guys like that, you know, hopefully
Dave Lapham his responsibilities of course, you know with the
Bengals in the Grado, hopefully that will allow him to come.
He's always great. But the guys just mingle. I mean
the pastor had Barney Busty and Robert Jackson and they
just come and you know they love interacting and you know,
(42:56):
messing with the fans and just being part of it.
And that's what's so much fun about it. It's not
you know, we don't have a roped off VIP section
where you know, we don't have the signers. You know,
don't feed the animals, you know, stay away because no,
I'm just messing with you. But you know we don't
have that. It's like, you know, we have a bay.
(43:16):
I get a bay with the guys can hang out,
grab some of that good food that you mentioned. Their
top golf and they hit a few balls and you
know people they can go walk up and down the
bay and say hi to people and auction items they
you know, we'd have some unbelievable lox items in the
past and and we'll continue to do that for you.
A benefit for those that pay that one thousand dollars
to come, you know, donate to the foundation, but then
(43:39):
you have a chance to you know, win some raffles
and some pretty good prizes there.
Speaker 3 (43:44):
Yeah, you can learn more about the event at Munnos
Foundation dot org. It's going to be at Top Golf,
the Top Golf Tailgate Thursday, September the fourth. It is
an absolute blast. The NFL game that night is going
to be on. The food is terrific. And if you're
a huge golfer, you'll love Top Golf. And if you're
not that in the golf, you're still gonna love Top Golf.
And we are looking forward to broadcasting from there.
Speaker 2 (44:07):
You and I.
Speaker 3 (44:08):
One of my favorite things is you start the show
with me at three o'clock that afternoon, and so we'll
have a chance to talk in greater detail about the
season and all things Bengals. But they've played a couple
of preseason games. Here's what I could tell you. Okay, Anthony,
the Joe Burrow guy is playing good. I'm not sure
if the defense can stop anybody.
Speaker 8 (44:29):
Your thoughts, Oh, well, this number nine guy that I
believe should have won the MVP last year even though
we didn't make the playoffs. In that trip, I tell
people not just because I played with the Bengals, and
he's a Bengal player. But if I started a franchising,
you got you know, Josh Shall and my Homes and
Jalen Hurst and I mean Herbert, you name him. I
(44:49):
would start my franchise with Joe Burrow and then my
next guy, I would get the best left guard and
the best left tackle that are playing me. But you
know what, you right, let's just let's go thirteen and
four and let's score sixty points a game and forget
about what the other day. No, I think, I think, well,
(45:11):
you know, and you know this Tinsley kid, I tell
you what. We just had it our arsenal, you know,
with Chase and Higgins and you know Josevich, and now
we got this Timsley who pitches everything in this radius.
But yeah, you're right, and I'm sure a lot of
concerns still with the defense. You know, I'm really impressed
with Knight and Barnett, the two linebackers we drafted. But
(45:31):
you know, for me, it's time for these defensive vans.
You know, Miles number one from last year, Shamar number
one this year. Those guys, I mean they got to
get rolling. I mean they're not. They're number one pick
for a reason, and that's to come in and to
be productive. And you know, Miles has had a couple
of years now, but uh, you know, Hope, I'm not
sure what's going to happen with trade. You know, we
need his fast rushing skills, but we still which we
(45:54):
haven't really done in pre season. I'm sure a lot
of people are worried. You know, four runs and you know,
two touchdowns, you know in the Monday night game and
you know, it's like, oh my goodness series again. But
pretty optimistic even though things with Al Goldin. I think
when you know, when when it's time to play live
go up to Cleveland. I think what he does defensively,
(46:17):
I think, you know, Flap will be in the starter.
He's going to bring some pretty good things for him.
And you know, so I'm not crazy crazy about our
defense right now, but I think we can we can
come along. And you know, but I'm saying those young guys,
you know, it's not like you know, sit there and
learn for a year or two. They've got to produce.
And to me, that's why you're drafted number one, to
(46:39):
come in and to be and show that you're deserving
of that number one pick. And we have a couple
of those guys on the defensive line that you know,
they got to come in and let their play do
the talking. They'll say. You know, I learned when I
was seven years old, my older brother told me he
should answer, you never should ever talk about how good
you are. If you're good enough, people are going to
(46:59):
talk about little that. I know. I was learning humility
and I carried that from the age of seven and
I just turned sixty seven yesterday and for sixty years.
That sticks with me in sports, business, non for profit
and in life. If you good enough, people talk about it.
So just go out and prove that you're worthy of
that number one draft pick. And you know, again, I'm
(47:22):
excited about what we what we drafted on that defensive side.
So I think I think fair child at the left
guard well is a rookie and they'll eventually be pretty good.
And hope you you know, Lucas Patrick consiling of that right.
And we need those two small tackles need to get
a little bigger. And I'll tell you what, I haven't
(47:42):
felt like the kids stand in the next to somebody
in a long time. And I was at camp standing
in between Orlando and mem and I'm like, oh my god.
I told more that the day when they left, I said,
when I grow up, I want to be like those
two guys. I was totally smoked us remarkable.
Speaker 3 (48:06):
Give me, give me an assessment, because I I think
Dylan Fairchild has has been fine. He'll have growing pains,
but I think there's a lot to like there.
Speaker 2 (48:14):
Uh, you're more.
Speaker 3 (48:15):
Qualified, needless to say, to talk about offensive line play
than I am.
Speaker 2 (48:18):
What have you seen from Dylan Fairchild?
Speaker 8 (48:21):
You know what strong all football?
Speaker 2 (48:25):
You know?
Speaker 8 (48:26):
I think the false anytime I see an offensive lineman
come to the NFL from Georgia, I know they're going
to be just physical, strong, tough and well taught. And
from what I see, Uh, we have a very technical,
sound offensive line coaching Scott Peters, and he's taken a
guy that has been very good. I think I think
(48:46):
his progression, I think he's gonna be elevated again a rookie.
We all go through it. Man, I was a third
pick in the draft in those days as a rookie
that I said, Lord, help me, is this is this
gonna get better? And it gets better if because you
have the desire, you have the just determination to be
the best. And that's what I see in this kid.
(49:07):
I mean, there's no lack of strength, there's no lack
of size, and you look at him and he looks
like a football player. I'm so good about this kid.
Speaker 3 (49:18):
Yeah, no question about that. I think everybody would agree.
We'll talk in greater detail, you and I together. Thursday,
September the fourth, it's the Top Golf tailgate benefiting the
Munios Foundation. You can reserve a bay. You can also
sponsor a bay at Munyosfoundation dot org.
Speaker 2 (49:35):
Again.
Speaker 3 (49:35):
That is the night of the NFL opener Thursday, September
the fourth at the Top Golf in Westchester. It is
an awesome event benefiting an awesome foundation, and Anthony Muno's
also awesome and can't wait to see you in two weeks.
Speaker 2 (49:51):
We'll see you then, man, Thanks so much.
Speaker 8 (49:53):
We always a pleasure. Thanks buddy, look forward to seeing you.
Speaker 2 (49:56):
Can't wait here you can too.
Speaker 3 (49:59):
That's the rate, Anthony Munhos again Munno's Foundation dot org.
We're biased because we get a chance to broadcast from
that event every year and it's it's awesome to share
a stage with Anthony Munno's it's it's great to have
him on the phone, but there are there's a handful
of times in the course of doing this for a living,
(50:19):
you know, Cincinnati sports fan, where you're like, holy, holy heck,
this is cool, man. And when you're sitting on stage
sharing a microphone so to speak with Anthony Munho's perhaps
the greatest offensive lineman ever, without question, the greatest Cincinnati
Bengal ever. That in itself is cool. But the event
itself is so good, so well run. All of the
(50:44):
former Bengals that show up are so accessible. They don't
cording them off, They're not at arms length. The food
is good. The I mean it's that is you get
a chance to see a lot of charity events when
you do this. That's that might be at the very
top of the list in terms of how it's run.
And with the folks with Anthony's foundation, the work that
(51:05):
they do, it speaks for itself. So I cannot encourage
you enough. By the way, there's also a ticket there,
and I should have asked Anthony about this. If golf
isn't really your thing, but you want to come out
and get something to drink and have something to eat.
And just you know, meet a handful of former Bengals.
There is a ticket that will get you everything but
to golf, but obviously bays are available. Go to Munios
(51:26):
Foundation dot org. That's Munyo's Foundation dot org. Twenty minutes
after four o'clock ESPN fifteen thirty, Anthony like all of
our guests, joining us on the Ray Saint Clair Roofing Hotline.
That's what Tony Pike will be on. Coming up in
just about twenty five minutes, we'll discuss the pursuit of
Dalton Reisner, plus Brendanman and Jones. On baseball, I've got
a Matt McClain. What if we've got to spend a
(51:47):
few minutes on Gisel james departure from the UC basketball
program and a Bengals off season that has felt very
much on brand. We'll get to that when we come
back on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sport.
Speaker 4 (52:00):
Station Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty to traffic.
Speaker 5 (52:05):

Speaker 3 (52:36):
Thanks sad for for this is ESPN fifteen thirty. We're
broadcasting from Bengals training camp today. Thanks for our friends
at a Door and Window they sell the best and
service the rest. Also Oakley Greens where we will be
broadcasting from on Tuesday of next week. Oakley Greens all
the sports, all the time. Oakley Greens hosted Tony Pikes
(52:58):
fundraiser that he helped put togther for his nephew on Saturday.
That was an awesome event. Tony worked his tail off
to make that happened. I know they raised a lot
of money, but that is just such a great venue
and I can't wait to be broadcasting from there starting
on a Tuesday of next week. We are also a
service of TOAF five one three five point three TOPH
(53:20):
We're broadcasting from the Airport Paint and Body broadcast area
and we use the ray Saint Clair roofing hotline, which
we just did for Anthony Munoz. There a couple of
items really quick. Earlier today we found out that Tyler
Stevenson has a broken thumb. Now there's the baseball part
of that. Their depth is tested further. He and Jose Travino,
(53:44):
from an offensive perspective, for the most part, statistically are
kind of hard to distinguish from each other. But I
cannot help but ask this. For a couple of days
you heard, well, it's it's a banged up thumb. He's
available if needed. But like Travino caught on Sunday, the
(54:05):
day after a night game, which he typically would do,
except that Tyler Stevenson wasn't available. But they thought this
is not that big of a deal. They had him
catch a bullpen session for Nick Lodolo and then they
did the X ray. I am not a I'm not
(54:26):
an expert on anything. How do you do it? How
do you do it that way? How do you not
go you know what, Let's do this first, Let's do.
Speaker 2 (54:33):
The X ray.
Speaker 3 (54:34):
This is not like me or you going to get
an X ray. Where gotta make an appointment. You gotta
see what's left in your hsays, my insurance gonna. You're
a major league catcher, getting an X ray is like
getting a sandwich. How is the first thing you do
not let's get the X ray done instead of let's
(54:56):
sit around, have him catch a bullpen from a big
league pitcher and then go get the X ray done?
Like this is not a lot of people do this
and I do not. They gratuitously beat up on the
Red's medical staff or how the Reds handle injuries, but
just the timing here is a little suspect. You've got
(55:16):
a catcher who just suddenly comes up with this thumb injury.
I guess catching a pitch from Hunter Green the thumb hurts.
How do you not go first, let's x ray it.
If the X rays are negative, cool, then we'll go
from there. How is the X ray the thing you
do last? They had him catch a bullpen session before
(55:38):
they did the X ray.
Speaker 2 (55:40):
What are we doing?
Speaker 3 (55:41):
Cordell Volson also out for the year. That is your
Postman law injury report. Thanks to a Postman law, if
you're injured eight four to four Postman. This has been
a very on brand offseason for the Bengals. There's like
so much happening right now, that the Trey Hendrickson thing
is still there. To the degree that it has been
(56:02):
a distraction, I think I think that for the most part,
it's not been. I think that for the most part,
it seems to me like the Trey hendrick thing has
kind of taken place in the background. He's been here
by all accounts. He's been by all accounts, including mine.
I've watched him interacting with his teammates. I watched the
(56:23):
game on Monday. He's talking with Joe Burrow, he's talking
with Shamarge Stewart, Like I think he and they have
tried to make this not be a distraction. But part
of the Bengals brand is there's always something. There's always
something contractually. There's always some sort of contract standoff. Now
I believe part of that is just inevitable in the NFL.
(56:47):
The Bengals are not the only team who has an
unhappy player because of his contract. But that's part of
their brand. Well, from that standpoint, it's been a very
on brand training camp, preseason, offseason, right. Part of the
Bengals brand is there's always a contract issue. Well, here
we are two preseason games. In most of training camp
(57:09):
is done, there's still a contract issue. Part of the
Bengals brand is, boy, it feels like Joe Burrow is
gonna have to go out there and score, you know,
thirty eight points every single week. If you watch the
Bengals on defense, it feels like Joe Burrow is going
to have to go out there and score thirty eight
points every single week. Part of the Bengals brand is
they can't protect the quarterback. Been working on the offensive
line now for a decade, well so far here in
(57:32):
the preseason and for many training camp practices, the offensive
line doesn't look like it's going to be able to
protect Joe Burrow. The way we would like.
Speaker 2 (57:39):
Part of the.
Speaker 3 (57:40):
Bengals brand is they're not proactive. They're reactive. So what's happened? Well, hey,
suddenly on the offensive line it looks like they might
need help. Let's in August go pursue Dalton Reisner. A
Dalton Reisner would be I think a better option than
Lucas Patrick. Many have pointed out that in pure past
(58:00):
block sets he graded out very well according to Pro
Football Focus.
Speaker 2 (58:04):
We'll see, but.
Speaker 3 (58:05):
Part of the Bengals brand has been that they're more
of a reactive franchise than a proactive franchise. The reactive
franchise is, uh oh, let's react to some stuff that's
happened during training camp in the preseason.
Speaker 2 (58:19):
And then go try to find a way to fix it.
Speaker 3 (58:23):
Instead of being proactive in doing everything you can to
fix an issue back in March or April, they've just
kind of let it be a thing until now the
season's just a couple of weeks away. We're panicking. We
better go find guard help. Maybe the same sort of
thing happens on the defense, where cut down day is
now highly anticipated, maybe the most important day of the offseason.
(58:46):
Who gets cut by other teams that the Bengals can
go get and teach their defense to and get something
out of in time for Game one. It's very much
on brand. I have a question about Matt McLean. We'll
get to that next on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 4 (59:05):
Station, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

Tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:00:53):
All right, let's we have we have folks waiting, and
we have had Anthony Munnos and Tony Pike and Jordan
and we've been busy, but we haven't had time to
talk to the most important people, those on our vest
and loyal listening audience. Starting with Amy Amy, You're on
ESPN fifteen thirty Amy, good afternoon.
Speaker 2 (01:01:12):
How are you Amo?
Speaker 9 (01:01:15):
How are you Amy?
Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
What's going on?
Speaker 8 (01:01:18):
It's been so long?
Speaker 2 (01:01:21):
Think the last time? This is Amy from Louisiana.
Speaker 9 (01:01:23):
Correct, that's right, Well, I live in Alabama now, but
I'm from Baton Ridge, Louisiana. So that's right. And I
of course am all in on the Bengals because of
Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase and you know, I am in this.
I don't know if it's dysfunctional or unhappy marriage that
(01:01:44):
we have right now. The situation of this team and
the news of Courtel Wilson and the defense I watched
on TV on Monday night that I just wanted to
puke all over my sofa. It was just horrendous and
lose me right now. Zach Taylor is saying, we just
(01:02:05):
wanted to show a vanilla defense. We didn't want to
show too much.
Speaker 3 (01:02:11):
But Amy, I, you know, Monday, you know, first of all,
they had Joe Burrow in the game to the degree
that the coaching went from you know, trying to see
what the starters can do and getting them ready for
the pre for the regular season opener, and it crossed
over into recklessness. And then watching them on defense, the
first unit in particular, it was sobering. And I'm putting
(01:02:33):
it gently. I also wanted to vomit on my couch.
Fortunately I did not.
Speaker 9 (01:02:38):
Yeah, I just thought, is that a day on Tuesday
that you're glad you're not on the radio, so maybe
you have some restraint or do you wish you would
have been on the radio to just zent and let
it all out right away.
Speaker 2 (01:02:52):
You know, it's kind of mixed. I was off yesterday.
Speaker 3 (01:02:55):
You know, you always want to be on when people
are talking about something, and I felt like, boy, Tuesday,
that's a good day to sort of react and hear
what people have to say about that performance. At the
same time, it did give me a day to sort
of put things through a filter that has probably enhanced
my ability to keep my job.
Speaker 8 (01:03:13):
That's great.
Speaker 9 (01:03:14):
Yes, that's great. So okay, question for you on keeping
your job with that?
Speaker 8 (01:03:19):
Yeah, what what is it like?
Speaker 9 (01:03:21):
Because I mean, would you say that Obviously you're your
hosts of the most important radio show covering the Bangles
and the Reds, and I'm rooting for the Reds, would
love to see them be successful. You know, you know
all of that. But you know, I guess it's a
little different. You're not like a beat writer, no, you know,
(01:03:42):
at the press conferences and all that, so you are
more of like you can share your opinion, right.
Speaker 3 (01:03:48):
Oh yeah, No, I'm I'm a fan. I'm a fan
with a microphone. That's how I've always described this show.
I am a trust me. We have some amazing journalists
who cover the teams in town on journalists. I'm a
Carnival Barker. I'm a radio personality. I am a fan
first and foremost. So yeah, I mean, when you have
(01:04:09):
a job like this, you're supposed to share an opinion.
Sometimes that opinion isn't popular. Sometimes that opinion is something
you change your mind about. Sometimes that opinion proves to
be wrong. But yeah, I am an opinionist. I am
not a journalist. I am a fan of these teams.
It's why I have one of the best jobs going
because I get a chance every day to talk about
(01:04:29):
teams that I care about deeply.
Speaker 4 (01:04:32):
I love that.
Speaker 9 (01:04:34):
I know you're living a dream. You're living the dream,
but it could also be a nightmare because, like you said,
you are still a fan. So when you are in
Cincinnati and you're hearing it all, and honestly, we're not
trending towards having a great opening to this season. I mean,
(01:04:54):
I don't see a win in Cleveland Week one with
that defense, with this offensive line, and it's just we're
not trending in a good direction. And if Jordan Battle
is on the football field, Lord help us all, and
that is the worst safety play I have ever seen.
(01:05:15):
My fifteen pound cavapoo could tackle better than Jordan Battle
can tackle. And I love Jayden Daniels uncle, obviously, you know.
Speaker 8 (01:05:25):
That's sure. You know.
Speaker 9 (01:05:26):
I was kind of happy for him, you know, you know.
But at the same time, I there's no way he
should have been in that end zone. There is no way.
And so I I'm looking at it and it doesn't
We're not trending in a good direction. But if you
could map out the perfect scenario that could happen in
the next two weeks, what would happen? I mean, would
(01:05:48):
it be signed Trey get Dalton Risner?
Speaker 8 (01:05:51):
Like?
Speaker 9 (01:05:51):
Like, what could help? What could we even hope to
happen in the next couple of yeks?
Speaker 3 (01:05:55):
So I guess for me, realistically, you would start with
your guy Trey Hendrickson. There we just be a resolution.
What that resolution looks like. I'll be honest with you, IM,
I don't care, like I if it's Trey Hendrickson is
going to play the rest of his career here and
his contract is fully guaranteed, awesome, And if it's you
know what, Trey and the Bengals agree that this is
going to be his last season here, or at least
(01:06:17):
until he hits free agency. But he's gonna be on
the field week one. Well, that's okay too. I just
want there to be a resolution so this isn't looming
over the season opener. In a perfect world, Trey Hendrickson
plays against the Cleveland Browns, plays all seventeen games, plays great,
and then if he still remains under contract with you
for the following season, terrific. And if he hits free agency,
(01:06:38):
well then okay. But I want him on the field
week one. I want there to be some sort of
resolution to this. So that would be number one. Number
two would be you know, I don't know that there's
a better alternative than Dalton Reisner out there in free
agency because the Lucaspatrick thing so far at least has
not worked. It has felt all along like his ceiling
is not very high. But even let's say they were
(01:07:02):
to sign Dalton Reisner today, I don't know that that
does anything to quiet the concerns about overall offensive line
death across the board. It feels to me like they
still maybe need a swing tackle, they could use one
more body like I worry about what happens when the
offensive lines depth gets tested because among the backups, I'm
(01:07:25):
not sure there's any real solutions there.
Speaker 2 (01:07:27):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:07:27):
You might argue, well, if Lucas Patrick is a backup,
you know that you could do worse. Maybe it can,
but there hasn't been much to like about how he's
performed so far.
Speaker 2 (01:07:36):
Here.
Speaker 3 (01:07:37):
The rest of it amy is probably not going to
play out in public view. I think what you're hoping
for is that Zach Taylor proves to be right that
what he is seeing from his defense in practice is
more reflective of how they're going to play week one
than how they've performed in the preseason. I'll tell you
from doing shows down here at training camp, the defense
(01:07:57):
has been fine in practice, but it doesn't matter. It's
how you perform in the games. And I think what
we're all hoping for is after the Browns game, we go,
you know what, Zach was right, How they played in
the preseason didn't matter as much as how they performed
in practice, and how they performed in practice ended up
translating to the field in the game that mattered.
Speaker 9 (01:08:17):
Okay, So I have one more question for you, okay,
and that is, do you I guess you have been
following this team for how long? How many decades as
a fan and then obviously as you're hosting, I've.
Speaker 2 (01:08:34):
Fell in love.
Speaker 3 (01:08:35):
I fell in love with the Cincinnati Bengals when I
was eight years old in nineteen eighty five when they
beat the Dallas Cowboys on National TV.
Speaker 4 (01:08:43):
Wow, I love that.
Speaker 8 (01:08:45):
Okay.
Speaker 9 (01:08:46):
So, yes, this is nostalgic. It goes back to your childhood.
Speaker 8 (01:08:50):
Okay.
Speaker 9 (01:08:51):
So as a lifelong fan loving this team, I have
just started following in twenty nineteen, you know, and I'm
trying to figure out is Joe Burrow going to be
drafted by the Miami Dolphins or the Cincinnati Bengals. Okay,
what do you do you really think? And what is
(01:09:12):
in the city? Does the city do you most? Do
you guys really think? And maybe I should separate you
from because you haven't a professional opinion that is way
more intelligent and informed than the average fan. So do you, mo,
do you feel like the ownership of the team is
(01:09:32):
serious about winning a Super.
Speaker 3 (01:09:36):
Bowl in their over in their own way, in their
own way. Yes, I don't think it's I don't think
it's lack of desire. I think it's we have our
way of doing it that we feel is best. We
have our way of doing it that we think is
going to work. Now, Amy, there's a large mountain of
evidence to suggest that their way is not going to work.
(01:09:58):
But I don't I do not believe that they don't
care about winning. I think they have their own way
of going about trying to win that they think is best.
You may say that those methods are outmoded, outdated. You
may think that they're overly stubborn, obstinate. You may think
that they cling to certain policies a little bit too closely,
like you know, for the most part, not guaranteeing money
(01:10:21):
to players after the first season, which is the big
hang up with Dray Hendrickson. I don't think it's lack
of desire for winning. I think they just feel their
way of doing business is the best possible way for
them to achieve winning. I thoroughly appreciate you calling. I
hope you call again throughout the course of the season,
but I gotta run in.
Speaker 9 (01:10:38):
Okay, Okay, thanks, No, have a great rest of your show.
Speaker 2 (01:10:42):
Well, we'll do our best, Tony Pike is with us.
Speaker 1 (01:10:47):
In fifteen thirty with the latest from Bengals training Camp,
brought you by Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg on your official home
of the Cincinnati Bengals ESPN fifty A.
Speaker 3 (01:11:00):
Right, Tony Pike is with us. Tony, So they've brought
in Dalton Reisner for a visit. He hasn't signed. They're
going to maintain dialogue, and so maybe this mirror is
the Noah fan situation where he meets, doesn't sign, but
he circles back signs and he's a Bengal and plays green.
I guess what I want to know is, in the
absence of Dalton Reisner signing with the Bengals, what's planned.
Speaker 8 (01:11:21):
B Jalen Rivers.
Speaker 7 (01:11:25):
You know, now we're talking ourselves into Jalen Rivers looked
good when he got in against the Washington Commanders.
Speaker 2 (01:11:31):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (01:11:32):
I don't know what the answer is, because now not
only do you have a deficiency with Lucas Patrick, it
feels like you also lose Kodel Vulson for the rest
of the year. So if you don't have Volson, you
already lose backup options at guard. You're maybe trying to
move Jalen rivers to a different position.
Speaker 8 (01:11:48):
That's not easy.
Speaker 7 (01:11:49):
We've seen not try to be done before. Reisner seems
to be the last one available out there. Joe Goodberry
came on the show earlier in the week and thought
that that he had Reisner as his top guard available
when the when the offseason started. So it's not like
it's it's slim Pickens. Rosa has a very good PFF
grade from last year. He's a good pass blocker. If
(01:12:09):
it gets past that, we're probably gonna be scouring the
waiver wires when when cutdown day happens here soon?
Speaker 2 (01:12:16):
Uh is Lucas Patrick as bad as we've made him
out to be.
Speaker 7 (01:12:21):
I I don't feel like he is a starting guard
capable of protecting the most important asset to the Cincinnati Bengals.
I think if if need be, he can be a
fringe piece or maybe fill in for a.
Speaker 8 (01:12:36):
Series or so.
Speaker 7 (01:12:36):
But if you're relying on him, play one of the
snaps against a team like the Browns and you're gonna
have Miles Darrett over you. I just don't think that
is a recipe for success long term.
Speaker 3 (01:12:48):

It's not the final day at Bengals training camp.
Speaker 2 (01:14:14):
This is the most comfortable it has been.
Speaker 3 (01:14:17):
But when you've been out all day long, or and
some of the shows we've had been out in the heat, boy,
thathing sounds better than a nice cold Mick Ultra of
Superior taste, Superior light beer Mick Ultra, one of those
sounds amazing. Right now, we're gonna talk with the owner
of Greater Cincinnati's newest pro sports franchise. Coming up at
about thirty minutes. You'll hear a little bit of Zach
Taylor coming up in a bit, plus more from Tony Pike.
Speaker 2 (01:14:39):
Your phone calls ahead as well.
Speaker 3 (01:14:40):
We have three free poll questions on Twitter at Moeger
thanks to United Heartland Insurance. Make sure you check out
uhi NS dot com and find out what the folks
there can do for any and all of your insurance needs.
Two of them are Bengals related one is about the defense.
Zach Taylor's assurances after the Washington game. Hey, they've been
(01:15:05):
fine in practice. I've seen what I've needed to see.
Speaker 2 (01:15:08):
Do you buy it? Vote now at Muegger.
Speaker 3 (01:15:12):
My response is this, this defense may be okay. They
may be by the middle of the season or by
mid October.
Speaker 2 (01:15:21):
They may be okay.
Speaker 3 (01:15:23):
There is I will certainly allow for the possibility of
there being a world where the Bengals al Golden gets
this defense to league average status, right somewhere close to the.
Speaker 2 (01:15:35):
Middle of the pack.
Speaker 3 (01:15:36):
The question that I have is how many games will
you lose before that happens? Like you could say, well, Mo,
they're playing the Browns, it's Joe Flacco, it's Cleveland, Okay, fine.
The thing about a bad defense, it's not that good
offenses torch it that bothers you. Right, Good offenses torch
good defenses. Bad defenses give up more points than they
(01:16:01):
should to bad offenses. The question that I have, or
the two questions that I have, or number one, how
much more dangerous does a bad offense become? If you're
putting a bad defense on the field, and it feels
like over the first couple of weeks, Bengals are gonna
be putting a bad defense on the field. How much
(01:16:22):
more dangerous does that make to Cleveland Browns? How much
more dangerous does that make the Jacksonville Jaguars the first
two opponents? How much more dangerous does that make Justin
Jefferson in the Minnesota Vikings Week three?
Speaker 2 (01:16:34):
So there's that.
Speaker 3 (01:16:35):
Question, But there's also like, Okay, by the time Al
Golden has the defense playing at an acceptable level, how
much catchup is the team gonna be playing because they
lost games while waiting for Al Golden to get the
defense to that acceptable level. Like you might go, well, wait, okay,
give Al time.
Speaker 2 (01:16:55):
He needs some time.
Speaker 3 (01:16:56):
He's a new DC, he's trying to squeeze a lot
out of players who weren't that good last year. Give
them time, got to be patient. Okay, But between now
and the payoff to the patients, which games do they
lose while they're still defensively a work in progress? And
can you consider them a championship team while the defense
(01:17:16):
is still a work in progress? That's a good question.
Here's another good question. Dalton Reisner came left, They're still
gonna talk. Apparently the visit went pretty well. He's gonna
chat with the Seahawks, apparently considering the Pittsburgh Steelers now.
It's worth mentioning Dalton Reisner has kind of a weird
(01:17:37):
free agency history where he often signs late. A couple
of years ago with Minnesota, he didn't sign until September
of twenty twenty three. Last year, didn't sign a contract
until the summer. So there's a little bit of an
mo here for Dalton Reisner where he plays a waiting
game at the same time. Man free agency in the
(01:17:57):
NFL started March tenth. That's more than five months ago.
March tenth, more than five months ago, and the Bengals
are just now just now starting to think about more
upgrades on the offensive line. It's reactionary, pro it's not proactive.
(01:18:19):
That's the word I'm looking for again, Like adult Riisers
free agent history is worth considering. He usually waits until
late to sign. But why weren't they so interested in
Dalton Riisner back in March that they made him like
the kind of offer that would make him step out
of his MO for signing late. Like, it's so frustrating, right,
(01:18:46):
if you're a Bengals fan, I would imagine you would agree.
You watch the offensive line struggle it especially in the
guard position.
Speaker 2 (01:18:52):
Last year, all.
Speaker 3 (01:18:53):
Season long, all season long, free agency starts, they don't
do that much, and now in August.
Speaker 2 (01:19:00):
They're trying to do a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (01:19:03):
The other question that I have is, if not Dalton Reisner,
than who like if it's like, man, we got to
sign this dude to play guard for US Cordell Vohlson,
by the way out for the year with a shoulder injury.
So if it's Dalton Reisner, okay, cool, awesome, When does
it happen? Is he gonna be good enough to help
the team week one? And if it doesn't happen, then
(01:19:24):
what fair question? If the other ones about Mitchell Tinsley,
I'll be honest with you. I don't feel too strongly
either way. Mitchell Tinsley was the story on Monday Night.
He was awesome against Washington. I think there's a legitimate
case that can be made. Hey, look at that position.
You can't have enough depth at any position. You can't
have enough depth. T Higgins has an injury history. There's
lots of dudes lower on the depth chart who don't
(01:19:46):
have extensive NFL resumes or might have reasonably low ceilings,
and so why not have one more playmaker at the
same time. Charlie Jones has had a good camp. Andre
Yoshavas is a pretty well established player. Mike Kasicki is
basically wide receiver three. Jermaine Burton's a wild card in
this whole thing. Did Mitchell Tinsley do enough that in
(01:20:06):
a league where there's lots of teams that could still
use wide receiver help, you can get them to give
you something of value in exchange for a guy who's
probably still not gonna play a lot. I have a
poll question about that, and then the other one is
about Tyler Stevenson. Tyler Stevenson's going on the injured list
because he's he's got a broken thumb. They're calling up
Will Banfield from Louisville. Red's an angel tonight Cincinnati looking
(01:20:31):
for a sweep. Tyler Stevenson is important because he's one
of the two major league catchers they have Offensively, while
he has had his moments, the numbers don't wow you.
They're basically indistinguishable from Jose Travino, who is the better
defensive catcher. I just I'm gonna try to get an
answer to this, they found out that he had a
(01:20:54):
banged up thumb, thought it was originally not that big
of a deal, had him catch a bullpen session, and
then decided to go ahead and do the X ray
and the x ray showed that the thumb is broken.
So my pole question to you again, thanks to United
Heartland Assurance, if a major league catcher has a thumb injury,
what should they do with him first? Should they have
(01:21:16):
an X ray performed or should they have him catch
a bullpen session? Vote now at MOEGAR five point three
seven four nine, fifteen thirty is our phone number. We
have had folks wait patiently. We've had a lot going
on today here at Bengals training camp. By the way,
today's show is a service of a door and window.
They sell the best and service the rest. Want to
(01:21:38):
thank Adam Weber for sponsoring all of our training camp
broadcasts and for his support of the Bengals all these
many years. I thank you for waiting, appreciate your patients.
You're on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 8 (01:21:49):
I how are you, hey, great man.
Speaker 10 (01:21:53):
I'm just on my drive homes from inspecting new built home.
So I have no pride for me, just like listening
to the show.
Speaker 8 (01:22:01):
I don't mind.
Speaker 2 (01:22:02):
That's very but.
Speaker 10 (01:22:03):
Hey, I yeah, yeah, I'd like to call this my
own personal segment called the positive on the Negative, and
it's just three things.
Speaker 8 (01:22:17):
And the first.
Speaker 10 (01:22:17):
Positive on the negative would be that Joe Burrow the
answer to why he was scrambling around like a crazy
man is that he knows what's going to happen. You know,
he's got to prepare and it's too dne two point zero.
You know, it's just extending his talent from what he
(01:22:39):
did last year, the Superman throw that made it in
zone and et cetera.
Speaker 3 (01:22:45):
Yeah, I just don't think it would be I just
think it was abundantly clear. Yeah, well before that play
that the Bengals weren't going to be able to protect him,
and I thought they played with fire keeping him in
the game.
Speaker 10 (01:22:59):
Yeah, I can't disagree. I just at this point, with
the moves that the Bengals make in any direction, it's
just it's insanity. So I try to find the clarity
or the positivity, and then number two would be Number
two would be that unlike last year. Then I recall
(01:23:20):
I could be foggy because it was such a mess
when the season got started to put people thinking the
defense is looking good going into the season, and then
it's a complete opposite. The positive on the negative is
see this now and start trying to catch up. Push
the panic panic button right now, and do everything they
(01:23:43):
can to level up. Like you said, they could end
up being league average. Why not get you know, a month,
jump on that and see what happened?
Speaker 8 (01:23:51):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 10 (01:23:53):
They're not gonna go get anybody else right, gonna betray hopefully,
I think I think they'll do it. But like everything
they do, it's just uh, completely ridiculous with how they
work contract It's like me trying to squeeze the last
bit of toothpage out of the tube, you know what
I mean. They just keep bulking it until they can't
(01:24:16):
do it anymore.
Speaker 3 (01:24:18):
I guess for me, if with that tray thing in particular,
if you believe as many do you know what, this
is still going to get done great, then why can't
it get done now?
Speaker 2 (01:24:29):
Like why and.
Speaker 3 (01:24:30):
Oh yeah, we all want there to be a resolution,
whatever it looks like, whatever the money, We just want
a resolution.
Speaker 2 (01:24:37):
But if you if they arrive at a.
Speaker 3 (01:24:39):
Place where right before the first game there's a resolution
and it's made everybody happy, and Trey signs. I think
it's gonna be fair to wonder, like, why do you
have to let it drag out as long as it did?
Like it would almost make more sense to me to
drag this out as long as they have if they
just said, Trey, we're not going to sign you and
we expect you to play under your contract like that.
(01:25:01):
I don't think any of us would love that, but that,
to me, on some level, would make more sense than Hey,
we're gonna go ahead and sign it. We're gonna give
Tray what he wants. We just we're gonna wait until
right before the first game.
Speaker 2 (01:25:12):
Why why does it have to be that way?
Speaker 8 (01:25:18):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (01:25:18):
My last positive on the negative is hopefully as they
the Bengals have kind of made some you know, new
age adjustments that.
Speaker 8 (01:25:30):
Through this Borough era.
Speaker 10 (01:25:32):
You know that they kind of squandered about a quarter
of his prime years. Here is if they quietly behind
the scenes make that adjustment, and because they won't, you know,
it's just stubbornness and patterns of history. I think you know,
(01:25:53):
they're just you're not gonna tell them how to do it.
But maybe they can make that shift and adjust instead
of wasting and end up spending more millions to make
the deals. You know, how could you deny saving that
money if you want to save it so badly. I mean,
(01:26:13):
at some point you got to admit defeat to yourself.
If you're not going to announce it to the public,
just start making the adaptations. If that's how it is,
if you want to squeeze it this hard and be
that you know, conservative stump that doesn't move like they are,
you know, and as a fan, I for our sanity,
(01:26:37):
we have to just like accept it and hope that
they change. And maybe me not so hyper focused. I'm
just so focused on Like I think that Burrow could
win this one, and he probably could do it with
the line like he had in twenty one, But you're
going to risk his knee or another you know, career ending.
Speaker 8 (01:26:58):
Risk, end injury.
Speaker 10 (01:27:01):
It's insanity, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:27:03):
Well, I mean I'll make it about I'll make it
about this Ian. Thank you for the for the phone call,
and uh and hang it on as long as you did.
I you know, Joe Burrow is a great quarterback that
goes without saying I think the frustrating thing like it's
it's frustrating to be an NFL QB purgatory, which is
what the Bengals were for years with Andy Dalton. But
(01:27:23):
I think it's more frustrating when you have that guy,
and yet there's a sense that there's a hump that
the team itself just can't get over.
Speaker 2 (01:27:31):
Maybe that ends up not being.
Speaker 3 (01:27:32):
The case, but it was the case last year, and
unfortunately because of deficiencies on defense and on the offensive
line that.
Speaker 2 (01:27:40):
Right now still appear to be in place.
Speaker 3 (01:27:44):
The most of our most of our, for most of us,
the opinion of the team hasn't changed. Like what we
have talked about and witnessed from the Bengals starting early
in the offseason, continue through training camp, and continuing through
the second preseason game, nothing has been done to change
(01:28:07):
our opinion of.
Speaker 2 (01:28:08):
From last year.
Speaker 3 (01:28:08):
Last year was Burrow's great, Lion Stins defense as a
train wreck. Eight months later, Burrow's great. They still have
incredible offensive weaponry, Line's still not very good, defense still
a train wreck. Nothing, Nothing has shifted, and so the
feeling last year, which was God, this team has an
(01:28:28):
awesome quarterback, but they're not yet championship caliber is still there.
They may prove a lot of is wrong. I believe
the Bengals are a playoff team. I believe the Bengals
are the type of playoff team that if they got there,
you wouldn't want to play. But until the other stuff
gets rectified, how do you talk about them in championship terms?
(01:28:49):
But when you have a quarterback like Joe Burrow, you're
that close, you're agonizingly you've got an absolute A list
or at QB. But then you've got all this other
stuff which just drags the overall organization and the overall
team down. That's what happened last year. It feels like
there's a greater likelihood of that happening than the Bengals
(01:29:12):
winning the whole thing in February.
Speaker 2 (01:29:13):
God knows.
Speaker 3 (01:29:14):
I hope I'm wrong about this, but it's it's really
hard to disagree with that. I think, like, how do
you feel good about their championship? And I said this
in the first hour of the show. This is the
filter that we have to put everything through now, because
Joe Burrow demands it. Is this championship caliber. Is the
Bengals defense championship caliber?
Speaker 2 (01:29:36):
No? Is the Bengals offensive line championship caliber?
Speaker 5 (01:29:40):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:29:41):
That was the case back in November, December, and January
of last year. Has enough been done to change that?
Speaker 2 (01:29:47):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:29:47):
So then right now the team is not championship caliber,
as much as I hate to say that. Twenty one
a halfter five o'clock, you'll hear Zach Taylor coming up
in just a few more of your phone calls as well.

It's our final thirty four minutes of broadcasting from Bengals
training camp. We want to thank for Cincinnati Bengals for
having us out here.
Speaker 2 (01:30:47):
It has been awesome.
Speaker 3 (01:30:48):
Got a chance to spend some time in the first
hour of the show with Jordan Schultz, which was really cool.
More than anything I have wanted to broadcast from training
camp since I started doing this, because just watching practice
is fun, right, You could we could argue about what
you could really glean from it and that sort of stuff,
and you know, maybe practice in twenty twenty five doesn't
(01:31:09):
look or sound like it did twenty five years ago.
It's still fun, and uh, it's been been a blast
to be here every day. We want to thank Oakley

Cincinnati's newest sports franchise coming up in just a few minutes.
First though, Zach Taylor talked earlier today, So Cordell Wohlson
done for the Areoho. Zach talk about that they've got
injuries really kind of all over the offensive line.
Speaker 2 (01:31:46):
Here's the head coach of the Bengals.
Speaker 11 (01:31:47):
On that topic, Oh, I think we're getting through a
lot of guys, you know, so right now, some guys
are still day to day. Lucas Patricks wasn't as severe
as as we initially thought during the game, so we'll
manage some guys through this week. Lucas would be a
guy that fits that category. Giseki would be a guy
that continues to be day to day right now. He's
(01:32:08):
in good shape. Drew Sample coming at this game, will
be day to day this week. Again, these are guys
that could play this weekend if we needed them to.
Trying to think who El's fits that category. Miles Murphy
similar so, so I think there's a lot of guys
right there that nobody that I really expect to extend
into next week. So I think we're in really good
(01:32:28):
shape there. Cor Cordell is going to have shoulder surgery,
so I expect him to be at the ear But
we'll get more information on that, but right now that
that's a tough one for him. He's been a guy
that's really worked hard for us, and I wouldn't say
it's set in stone until you have the surgery, but
that's that's the direction it seems to be heady practice.
(01:32:51):
He heard it in practice.
Speaker 8 (01:32:52):
Yeah, that's something exactly where that the team could could
use some death possibly guard.
Speaker 11 (01:32:58):
We're still working through it.
Speaker 8 (01:32:59):
You know.
Speaker 11 (01:32:59):
We got guys can eating for a lot of the
jobs there, and so I'm excited to see how that
shakes out over the next two weeks.
Speaker 3 (01:33:05):
All Right, there's Zach Taylor earlier today on the guard position.
Now after the game, let's fink, Let's let's be honest.
He kind of downplayed concerns about how the defense played
against Washington because of how well they've played in practice.
Zach had a chance to review the tape obviously, Since then,
here he is discussing how he feels about how the
defense played after watching that tape.
Speaker 11 (01:33:28):
I thought, you know, some of the things that that
we saw initially in that first drive, the staff and
players did a great job adjusting to you know, where
those things weren't issues for users who went on. So
I'll be excited to get through this preseason and and
really play real football and do the things that I've
seen us do in practice. There's the good of learning
experience for a couple of the guys that were in
positions there that we need to improve at and be
(01:33:50):
better at because you'll see it again at some point
in the year. But again, I like the direction our
defense is going, and I thought as that game went on,
they played outstanding. You know, It's held them three points,
created two turnovers for us, help take command of the
game really starting with Tyson's pick to Barrett's pick, and
in doing a good job there in the fourth quarter
getting off to fill in.
Speaker 6 (01:34:11):
They're down.
Speaker 3 (01:34:12):

We're broadcasting from Bengals training camp thanks to a door
and window. On Monday, we found out that we have
a new local pro sports franchise here in town, an
AF one team that is going to be playing at
Truest Arena on nk US campus. The Kentucky Barrels will
play their inaugural season beginning in the spring of twenty
(01:35:29):
twenty six. The owner of the team is a Westsider
from Oak Hills, Corey Cunningham, kind enough to give us
a few minutes. Corey, Welcome to the Kentucky Barrels. Thank
you for joining us.
Speaker 2 (01:35:40):
How are you.
Speaker 8 (01:35:42):
I'm doing great?
Speaker 2 (01:35:42):
How you doing? BUF doing wonderful. Let's start with the beginning.
Speaker 3 (01:35:46):
AF one, which is a league that started I guess
last year.
Speaker 2 (01:35:49):
Tell me about it.
Speaker 12 (01:35:52):
Yeah, there were a couple of arena leagues that were disbanding,
and AF one kind of was a culmination of those
two leagues coming together, and one of the owners of
the Nashville team who you guys may have heard of before.
Jeff Fisher, former NFL coach, was tapped as the interim commissioner,
(01:36:17):
and you know, we decided to keep him and he
is now the full time commissioner.
Speaker 8 (01:36:23):
So it was kind.
Speaker 12 (01:36:24):
Of you know, for me, that name, Jeff Fisher holds
a lot of weight, and you know, knowing his history,
it was an easy decision to go with that league
over any other league.
Speaker 3 (01:36:37):
So how how does one go about starting applying for launching?
The right verbiage is to get their own AF one franchise?
Speaker 12 (01:36:48):
Well, I had My situation may be different than the rest.
You can just go on the website and do your research.
Or in my case, I actually was an investor in
another team down down South. We'll keep their name off
the radio, but down South, and they had a different
(01:37:09):
visions and what I wanted, uh and what I was
looking for. And then I talked to the league executives,
Jerry Kurrs, Jeff Fisher, UH, and we decided, you know,
if I wanted to keep keep ownership, I could I
could start a team in Kentucky and you know, we
did get a heritage.
Speaker 7 (01:37:28):
Bank talk to them.
Speaker 12 (01:37:29):
We talked the truest and Kentucky was.
Speaker 7 (01:37:32):
Just the right fit for us.
Speaker 12 (01:37:33):
And uh, you know, I went and went in went
about it a roundabout way, but you know, I'm very
happy with the decision. The response from the community has
been just outstanding.
Speaker 2 (01:37:42):
All Right, you have a coach, Cedric Walker.
Speaker 6 (01:37:45):
Tell me about him.
Speaker 12 (01:37:47):
Uh, he is amazing. He's been here, he uprooted and
came from Billings, Montana. Uh, he was the two thousand
and twenty four champion of the NA L Division before
they came over to a F one. They won the
championship there. He's just an amazing person. Everyone kind of
(01:38:10):
gravitates toward him. He's just easy to talk to, just
a down.
Speaker 8 (01:38:14):
To earth guy.
Speaker 12 (01:38:15):
And I will say off the field, on the field,
he's a bulldog. You don't want to mess with him.
But he is just a great human being and he
even better coach.
Speaker 3 (01:38:25):
Where do you Where do you find your players? Where
do you get your guys?
Speaker 12 (01:38:30):
Well, we want to we want to start locally. We
and we actually spent all day today looking at film.
We do have some scouts that send us film on
players who are looking, you know, to to kick starter
or get film because what we want to do. We
want to elevate these guys to the upper leagues, you know,
we want we want to try and find the next
part Warner, who was an arena football legend and then
(01:38:53):
obviously m VP of the league and Super Bowl champion.
That's what we want to do. We want to find
people who may not get as many looks as Division
one players, you know, D two people, you know, Thomas Moore,
Mount Saint Joe. You know, we want to watch film
on those guys and try and get them more looks
at the upper levels USFL, USL, NFL. You know, we
(01:39:16):
want to try and elevate them and get some film
and get them some looks by those upper leagues.
Speaker 3 (01:39:23):
AF one Football like there are those of us. I
remember as a kid the Cincinnati Rockers. Does AF one
football look feel and seem like that product?
Speaker 2 (01:39:32):
Are their rules differences? Tell me about that.
Speaker 7 (01:39:35):
We are a little different.
Speaker 12 (01:39:37):
We do use the netting system where it's not just
a fifty yard field. We do have netting system that
you could play the ball off the field, so all
kickoffs go off the net. And what's f about that
is when it hits the net, you have no idea
where the ball is going to go, but it is
a live ball, so it can go anywhere, you know, safeties.
(01:39:57):
You know, there's a lot of points being scored off
kickoffs because it hits the net and no one knows
where it's gonna go. And then also you can kick
it through the uprights and get what we call the
deuce and get two points on a kickoff, which is different.
And then also if you are at a goal line situation,
the quarterback can throw it off the net and receiver
(01:40:18):
can catch it off the net.
Speaker 2 (01:40:19):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:40:20):
All right, how how many weeks? How long is the
aa F one season?
Speaker 8 (01:40:27):
That is kind of still up in the air.
Speaker 12 (01:40:28):
We're looking at two more teams for expansion right now,
we're looking at a twelve week season. We're looking to
go fourteen and then three weeks for playoffs. So we're
gonna be right around at twelve to fourteen game season
this year.
Speaker 2 (01:40:48):
All right, very good.
Speaker 3 (01:40:50):
What's the biggest challenge in launching your own professional sports franchise?
Speaker 12 (01:40:56):
Keeping everything organized? You know, we have a lot of
moving parts right now. We got a field coming in,
we have the goalposts coming and we're scouting players, you know,
just just talking to media, you know, that's that's a
lot that we've done in the last few days, which
you know, again thank you for having us on. This
has been amazing. But yeah, it's just trying to keep
(01:41:20):
everything organized and you know, keep focused on, you know,
our ultimate goal, which is you know, bringing a championship
here to Northern Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (01:41:28):
Truest Arena is a basketball facility.
Speaker 3 (01:41:30):
Obviously, it's hosted concerts and the circus was there one year.
Speaker 2 (01:41:34):
I remember that.
Speaker 3 (01:41:35):
I mean, do you have to do you have to
fit it for football? Their modifications to the arena that
have to come.
Speaker 2 (01:41:40):
How does that work a little bit?
Speaker 12 (01:41:43):
So in our fields, very depending on arenas, So we
have to go with more of the hockey look where
it's just rounded edges instead of square square end zones,
which only loses us about two feet on either side.
So instead of a ten ten yard end zone, it's
gonna be an eight yard end zone. But you know,
(01:42:06):
defense is like that. They don't like the out routes,
so that kind of eliminates that. But yeah, it's just
a hockey rink. We're gonna play hockey rink. We're gonna
chuck people on to the boards like a hockey rink. Yeah,
so you know it's it's just super exciting, super fun.
Can't wait for every to come out.
Speaker 3 (01:42:25):
You've you've got a you've got a team, you've got
a sport. You've got to create an event, right, You've
gotta you've got to make it more than just about football.
Speaker 2 (01:42:33):
How's that gonna work for your franchise?
Speaker 12 (01:42:36):
And the thing that our CEO, Jerry Kurrz always says is,
we throw a party in a football game breaks out.
You know, we want the fans to be jumping up
and down the stands. We'll have a DJ during the game,
we'll have a dance team, and then after the game,
everybody can come on the field and meet the players,
shake hands, sign autographs. You know, you were kind of
(01:42:57):
hitting on it with Anthony Munnos's you know, some of
these players are at arms lengths. You can't get to them,
you can't get autographs. But here we want you to
actually physically be able to shake hands with them, get autographs.
They're gonna throw balls in the stands. Take that ball
down and get that player's autograph. For all you know,
you're getting the next Kurt Warner's autograph that night.
Speaker 3 (01:43:18):
There you go, all right, Corey Cunningham, the owner of
the Kentucky did you how'd you come up with the logos?
Speaker 2 (01:43:24):
Cool? How'd you come up with the name? All right?
We lost? We lost Corey?
Speaker 3 (01:43:33):
All right with Corey Cunningham is the owner of the
Kentucky Barrels is Corey? I was just gonna ask Corey
you got You're back with me?
Speaker 2 (01:43:41):
All right? You good?
Speaker 10 (01:43:42):
I am, I'm good.
Speaker 3 (01:43:43):
I don't know what happened.
Speaker 2 (01:43:45):
This is live radio. This is what my My last
question was, how did you come up with a team name?
Speaker 12 (01:43:51):
Honestly, we were in Albany, New York, at the Arena
Crown last year Albanie versus Nashville.
Speaker 7 (01:43:57):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (01:43:58):
Some of the owners were just sitting around and we
were talking about, you know, what the team would name
would be if we were going to Cincinnati or Kentucky
or Dayton or wherever we were going to go. Just
so happened to have a bottle of Kentucky Bourbon in
front of us, and it kind of just came into,
you know, Kentucky Bourbons. We like the name Bourbons, but
(01:44:19):
then we couldn't really use that because it was a
generic name. So then we're like, well, the barrels. That's cool.
So then we started messing with logos and stuff like that,
and the logo you see now is kind of all
came about from a nice glass of Kentucky bourbon.
Speaker 3 (01:44:36):
When you can mesh two things. I love football and bourbon,
you've got me. So congratulations on that. Best of luck, man.
I can't imagine the challenges you have in front of you,
but hopefully there's a great payoff. The season will begin
early next spring. Truest Arena is an awesome venue and
so it's going to be pretty exciting. Best of luck,
(01:44:56):
and I'm sure we'll chat soon.
Speaker 2 (01:44:58):
Thanks so much.
Speaker 8 (01:44:59):
All right, thank you, Oh, I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (01:45:00):

it Will Banfield from Louisville to replace him on the roster.
Speaker 2 (01:46:10):
Yes, he is a catcher.

Speaker 3 (01:47:15):
When we're checking on the Ray Saint Clair Roofing Hotline
with our guy Tony Pike hourly training campra bories three forty.
Speaker 2 (01:47:21):
Five, four, five and five forty five.
Speaker 3 (01:47:24):
You and I Tony have not had a chance to
talk about maybe the brightest, the brightest bright spot in
the field for the Bengals on Monday night, and that
is the playoff wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley. This is something
that you and Austin talked about earlier today on SINCY
three sixty. Has that one performance compelled you to think
that maybe, beyond being a depth piece for the Bengals,
(01:47:46):
that they could shop him to a wide receiver needy
team and get something of value in return.
Speaker 7 (01:47:52):
I have a hard time believing that you couldn't. Now
you know what you get in value in return. I
think there's a lot of options you could look to
on the deepensive side of the ball right now and say, yes,
that's an immediate upgrade. Let's get somebody. But as good
as Mitchell Tinsley's been, the role on this team is
just not one that he can carve out. He's not
going to surpass Jamar Chase and T Higgins. He's not
(01:48:12):
going to surpass Yoshivash, He's not going to surpass Charlie Jones,
and when healthy, he's probably behind Jermaine Burton do the
mass that's probably sixth on the depth chart and probably
not even dressing for many of those games. If you
can highlight what he was able to do and he
stole the show against the Washington Commanders, and maybe you
back that up and get him on the same page
(01:48:35):
with Des Ritter, and he shows out well against the
Colts on Saturday. Teams have been more willing in the
past to part ways with maybe bigger pieces or bigger returns.
If the season is impending offseason, it's a little bit
more difficult. But if the season's right around the corner
and you feel like you're a contender and you are
a team that needs a wide receiver, how can you
(01:48:55):
not be lining up to try to get a hold
of what Tinsley's been able to do for the Bengals.
Speaker 3 (01:49:00):
Zach Taylor today said the starters aren't gonna play against Indianapolis.
Speaker 2 (01:49:04):
Do you agree with his approach?
Speaker 7 (01:49:06):
Yeah, because the turnaround time is just too quick. Now,
if he were to say, hey, we're gonna play some
of our defensive guys because we have not seen enough
and we've got to get stuff done, I would have
been okay with that. But the idea of playing Monday
in the preseason away traveling back, and by all accounts,
Zach Taylor said, guys are kind of banged up. That's
why they had to adjust the schedule.
Speaker 2 (01:49:26):
Today.
Speaker 7 (01:49:27):
I can understand with a very quick turnaround and a
one o'clock meaningless game three of the preseason, I can
understand holding guys out, and if you're doing so on offense,
you feel pretty good about where that first team offense
has been throughout training camp.
Speaker 2 (01:49:42):
All right.
Speaker 3 (01:49:42):
Tony Pike joins us tomorrow three forty five, four forty
five and five forty five. He is back with since

We have thoroughly enjoyed coming out to Bengals training camp

do this obviously. The Bengals have been accommodating you. Hear
us mention the name Mike Mills. Mike Mills works harder

and he's had to do it in the heat and
the rain and the elements, and he's had to carry
equipment across the street and set up a ten and

has just been awesome to work with as always, and
wanted to make sure we shouted that out. We're back
in studio tomorrow at three oh five. Of course, thanks
