Speaker 1 (00:00):
Lovely NFL preseason is rapping up, and the Bengals are
seeking to stump the Colts, who will or won't lake
the team. It's Stripes versus stirrups. Get the call live
from Dan Wood and Dave LAPPIM coverage begins Saturday at
eleven thirty am. Stream for free on the new and
improved iHeartRadio app or ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home

(00:23):
of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yea, and I'll tell you what it feels like. They
just got done playing the preseason game already another one
on Saturday, kicking off in like you see forty six
hours Bengals and Colts with none of the main guys playing,
which I think should be the norm moving forward. We'll
get to that coming up in the four o'clock hour show.

(00:46):
Previews available right now on Twitter at mogar thanks to
Emery Federal Credit Union, your credit union with Hart since
nineteen thirty nine. Go to EMERYFCU dot org. In thirty minutes,
we're gonna make some money on College Football Week zero.
Tony Pike at three forty five. We've got some Bengals

(01:07):
questions that we have to ask and the first ever
banishment on this show. We are banning not a person,
We're banning a term. We're banning a topic, so to speak,
on this show. I'll tell you what it is in
just a few minutes. The Reds lose a tough one
last night, and the culprit was the offense two of
ten with a minute scoring position. They had opportunities to

(01:30):
score runs in the second, the fifth, and the sixth,
couldn't get it done. Nick Martinez pitched fine last night.
I know there's a lot of folks who have really
strong opinions about him in the starting rotation versus the bullpen.
I'm just glad Nick Martinez is on the team. He's
a nice option to have. Maybe when Nick Lodolo comes back,
you want to back in the bullpen. The bullpen, though

(01:51):
right now there's trust issues. Graham Ashcraft was not exactly
beaten around the park last night. The hit that he
gave up is probably not a hit if ke Brian
Hayes at third base is back. The reason they lost
the game was they scored one run. Now they're off today.
The Mets play this afternoon against the Washington Nationals. New
York loss last night, so the Reds are still a

(02:13):
game behind the Mets in the race for that last
wildcard spot. New York plays in an hour. We'll keep
you up to date on that game as it unfolds
throughout the afternoon. But you know, two nights ago, Luis
May was given the ball the eighth inning of a
game in late August with the Reds in pursuit of
a playoff spot. Luis May was the eighth inning option.

(02:33):
He pitched in the eighth inning the night before. Today,
he's en route to Louisville. Graham Ashcraft is a guy
that they've called upon in certain high leverage situations. At
times he's gotten it done, like last night. There have
been times where he hasn't gotten it done. This team's
starting pitching, we've talked about it all year, is really good, right,
It's really good. And it's even better because Hunter Green

(02:54):
is back. And by the way, I did not yesterday
take the Hunter Green victory lap that many expected me to,
So guess what I'm gonna take it today a little
bit later on. But what they're trying to do now,
we've talked about it all season long, right, they have
to figure out ways to squeeze more out of their offense.
They have to figure out ways to get to the
postseason despite having an offense that has limitations, right, they

(03:18):
don't hit a lot of home runs. There aren't a
lot of guys that I think, if you're game planning
against the rede you go, you know what, We can't
let that dude beat us. Elie Dela Cruise's home run
issues or home run hitting issues have been talked about
a lot over basically the last couple of months. It's
an offense that has its moments. It's an offense that
when you have a nightla like last night, it's kind
of unsurprising. What do we do with this bullpen? And

(03:41):
I guess, more specifically, what does Terry Francona do with
this bullpen? Now? They may get some answers when the
rosters expand on September first. I've read people on the
internet who are speculating that Zach Maxwell is going to
be called up. Maybe he could help out. The trade
deadline is coming gone. That certainly doesn't completely reclude the
Reds from acquiring help from outside, but let's be honest,

(04:03):
the bullpen is currently constructed, maybe with the addition of
Nick Martinez, assuming Nick Lodolo comes back when expected, which
could be should be that Dodgers series next week. The
question is, and I'll let you answer it at five
point three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty basically is currently
constructed with a team that's gonna have to play in

(04:24):
and win a lot of close, low scoring games. Can
the bullpen get it done? Can the bullpen get it done?
A unit that at times this year has been pretty
reliable when they were using the tried and true formula
of Tony Santian in the eighth inning and Emilio Pagan
in the ninth. Santia has been overworked, Pegan's had some
shaky outings. As currently constructed, Can we trust this bullpen

(04:48):
enough and can Tarry Francona trust this bullpen enough to
win the sort of games that they're going to have
to win in order to get to the postseason. Well,
it's a very fair question. We allow for free and
easy dialogue on this show. We've been on the air
since two thousand and seven, and what I love about

(05:10):
this forum and what we've tried to promote on this
show is an open exchange of ideas, an open exchange
of you know, criticisms. We're allowed to disagree. We do
it in a fun atmosphere. I've never banned anybody. We
have never banned a caller on this show. We've never
banned a guest. Don't believe in that right. I don't
believe in this forum that you should ban people. And

(05:32):
for the most part, we've not had to deal with
anybody who's abusive or racist or homophobic, Like, we don't
do any of that. I've blocked maybe ten people in
my life because they have violated that, But in this show,
we've not had to deal with that. We don't ban stuff.
We're gonna ban something on this show for the very
first time because I just I want this thrown out
the window permanently. I want to ban the suggestion that

(05:55):
the Bengals this year simply need a Lee average defense.
How many times have you heard that? You know, they
just have to be league average, They just got to
be league average. Can they be league average this year?
I don't know. Maybe that's not that lofty at standard.
The unit that we watched last season was, needless to say,

(06:18):
not league average. The unit that we have watched in
the two preseason games needless to say not league average.
I'm not interested, and if you're a Bengals fan, I
don't think you should be interested in asking the question
can they simply be league average? So we're not gonna
do it on this show anymore. Here's the question that matters.
Can the defense win games for them? Because you know,

(06:42):
we in our mind's eye, we know what this offense
could look like.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
Right.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
It's Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and Chase Brown and
t Higgins and Mi Kasiki and Noah Fan all the weaponry,
scoring like forty five points every single game. And that
is gonna happen this year where they're at times like
impossible to stop, and they maybe they score every time
they get the ball. They move the ball at will.
There's explosive plays, there's methodical drives. They beat you in

(07:06):
the air, they beat you on the ground, they beat
you with the deep ball, they beat you with short
intermittent passing. And that's probably gonna be the rule for
much of the season. Chances are it won't be for
all seventeen games last year the Bengals had games for
the offense didn't do a lot. New England scored ten points,
lost that game. The Giants game on the road. The

(07:27):
only offensive play in that game that anybody remembers is
Joe Burrow running for a sixty yard touchdown. Scored seventeen
points the Pittsburgh game. At the end of the year,
the offense was mostly non existent. Defense did help them
win that one, did help them win the Giants game.
What I want to know about this unit is not
can they be League average? What I want to know

(07:48):
is when they have to win a game for this team,
maybe Joe Burrow in the offense just have a bad week,
Maybe there's an injury, perhaps there's a rough whistle, whatever
it is, can the offense a game to win a
championship and to have this sort of season we all
want the Bengals to have. You have to win games
in a lot of different ways. Right You don't just

(08:08):
beat everybody thirty eight to ten. You gotta win close games.
You gotta have to you have to come from behind.
Sometimes sometimes your defense can't stop anybody. Maybe you need
a great field goal or special teams performance. But to
win a championship, which I think at least should be
the standard around here, you're gonna have to win the
sort of games where your offense doesn't necessarily do what
you expect, and the arrow gets pointed at the defense.

(08:31):
What frustrates me about how we talk about the defense
and what frustrates me watching what they haven't done to
that unit, watching how they've played in the preseason, and
understanding how bad they were last year, is I don't
trust that unit to win them games. Let's say Week one,
it's bad weather, it's win the weather. It's a Browns

(08:52):
defense that the Bengals can't block, and this offense that
we expect to score fifty points a game only scores
like I don't no sixteen or seventeen or fourteen or
thirteen or maybe twenty below. You know their season average
output from last year. Can the Cincinnati Bengals with al
golden can their defense rise to the occasion? If you

(09:15):
are nodding along, yes, or if you're yelling at your device, mo, yes,
they can. That's based on what five point three, seven,
four nine, fifteen thirty eight six six seven oh two
three seven seven six. You can send a tweet if
you'd like at Moeger thanks to Delta Dental. Delta Dental
is building healthy, smart, vibrant communities for all good to

(09:36):
Delta DENTALOAH dot com. You can make this situational can
they just get a stop in the fourth quarter? And
you can also make it about the question that I
asked often last season, who on this defense besides Trey Hendrickson.
If you're an opposing team's offensive coordinator, are you sitting
down on Monday afternoon to game plan for that game going?
You know what? We can't let this guy destroy everything
we're trying to do. These questions matter a lot more

(09:59):
than a can they finish in a somewhere in the
middle of the pack. Can they have a league average defense?
There will be times this year if the idea is
to win a championship, they need more than a league
average defense. Will they be capable? Five point three, seven, four, nine, fifteen,
thirty will get you in. It's week zero in college football.
Lee Sterling, who has been a part of this show

(10:19):
for years, is going to help us win some money.
He's also going to talk about the Bearcats from a
betting perspective. Chad Brendle in the four o'clock hour, we'll
talk some uc football. He has Cincinnati's season record on
his podcast and on his Twitter feed. Go check that out.
We'll also talk about the basketball situation in the fallout
from a Gisel James leaving the program, A plus Tony

we have the Bengals and Colts. My GAM's going to
kick off at one o'clock. I was listening to the
It's on ESPN fifteen thirty. By the way, I was
listening to the top of the hour update from ESPN
where they talked about how Josh Allen's not going to
play a snap for the Buffalo Bills in the preseason.

(11:51):
Obviously the idea is for him to play. Also, for
what it's worth. Lamar Jackson, who they said yesterday and
Baltimore had his footsteps on during a drill, didn't practice today,
but they insist he is totally fine. We watched Joe
Burrow play on Monday Night, and you know, let's be honest,
most of us have been on board with Joe playing
in the preseason. Most of us have been on board with,

(12:12):
you know, altering training camp, making it more physical, and
having Joe and the players who matter most play more
in the games that don't count. I'm not gonna pretend
that I felt otherwise. It felt like a necessary evil.
But moving forward, I'm kind of okay if Joe plays
for the next ten years for the Bengals. I'm okay

(12:33):
if Monday Night is the last time I ever see
him on the field in a game that doesn't count.
We're gonna get to that coming up a little bit
later on Lee Sterling's gonna join us in twelve minutes
try to help us win some money on the Bearcats
this season and during college Football's Week zero. I did
not get a chance to get to him the last

(12:54):
time he called this show, and so I'm gonna start
off with our guy, Mike.

Speaker 7 (12:58):
Mike, Well, how wonderfully kind it is if you missed Egger.
You're a fine man. Thank you.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
So I try my best.

Speaker 7 (13:10):
You you tweet and triggered the memory into me. You
know the way you triggered a memory into me when
you said the old Coney Island, the iconic Coney Island gates.
I grew up in Mount Washington. I would ride my
bicycle down the hill on Sutton Avenue in the fifties
and sixties and pull out right on Kellogg and boom

(13:31):
right there at Coney Island. They had some of the
coolest rides there.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
Mother.

Speaker 7 (13:36):
They had one called the wild Mouse. They had they
had a totally wooden roller coaster called the Wildcat, which
was well, I didn't realize how cool it was at
the time. The sound it made, the click click, you know,
going up on a wooden plank. So I just had
to say something about that. Because it was so cool.

(13:57):
You jogged the pleasant memory for me.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
I'm happy to have done that.

Speaker 8 (14:01):
Well, do you.

Speaker 7 (14:03):
Get to watch MLB extra innings very often?

Speaker 2 (14:06):
I do? Yeah.

Speaker 7 (14:08):
You know what I like most about it? I love
listening to the opposing teams broadcasters because you get a
cool different slant on the Reds and a lot of
times it's pretty cool. Like some of them, I life
better than the others as far as the opponent announcers.
But the Angels guys were just, you know, saying so

(14:30):
many good things about the Reds. They were so impressed
with the Reds.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
It was just a night.

Speaker 7 (14:36):
I just don't know how many people get an opportunity
to see MLB extra innings and get to hear the
other team's announcers.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
So, no, Mike, you you touched on something that that
I probably should admit that I do this, but I
I don't watch the Reds on extra innings because I
don't think here and you can tell me if I'm wrong.
I think if if the Reds are on in this market,
you don't get access to the other team's broadcasters, But

(15:04):
if you subscribe to the MLB at bat app, you
could listen to any broadcast or any game. And in
one of those games, the Reds played against the Philadelphia Phillies,
because I really like the Phillies broadcast career. This is
no indictment on Tommy Thrawl or anybody else, because those
guys are awesome. But I spent cutting my grass. I

(15:25):
went back and forth between the Reds broadcast and the
Phillies broadcast for that reason, Kevin Franski and Kevin Stalker,
and I thought to myself, like, this is the sort
of thing that we should probably do a little bit
more often, especially while the Reds are relevant, where you
get a chance to hear that perspective. Now, my bosses
here aren't going to love me saying that, because obviously
we want folks to listen to the Cincinnati Reds broadcast

(15:46):
and they're terrific. But I've always felt like there's at
least some value in getting that perspective, and often this
year when I have heard it, they have been pretty complimentary. Obviously,
very complimentary about Tito francona very compliment about some of
the red starting pitchers, and just overall complimentary about the
direction the Reds are going in. I think that's a
fair point.

Speaker 7 (16:07):
Yeah, it's just refreshing it. Just like you said, nothing
against Tommy or Cowboy or any of them guys, just
something different to juice things.

Speaker 3 (16:15):
Up a little bit.

Speaker 7 (16:16):
Sure, I made a believer out of media other night.

Speaker 8 (16:22):
I've done a.

Speaker 7 (16:22):
Hard sell on Haunter.

Speaker 9 (16:24):
But you are right.

Speaker 7 (16:25):
When this guy is healthy, he's better than Wheeler. He's
better than Wheeler. He's as good as Schemes, if not
better than Skiings. The guy is the best right handed
starter in baseball when he's healthy. No one can convince
me otherwise.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Now you know you're on my page. Paul Skeins is awesome.
I think he's the best pitcher in baseball right now.
Hunter's not quite there because you can't rely on them
from a health perspective. But when healthy, there's I'm with you.
I do not think right now there's anybody that I
would say is dramatic, at least dramatically better than Hunter Green.
Now there's a part of me that feels like he

(17:04):
still has to learn how to pitch a little bit more.
Maybe not rely on throwing the ball in ninety nine
and a half miles an hour on average with his fastball,
Maybe working the other pitches a little bit more consistently.
But I think he's gotten better in that regard. And
you know, the numbers bear this out. Since you know,
May first of last year, there really haven't been that

(17:24):
many guys who are better. And even if you want
to split hairs and say, well, Paul Skeens is better,
Zach Wheeler's better, or Derek Scooble's better, who's one of
my favorites to watch? All right? Fine, a healthy Hunter
Green is in the conversation. What I'm hopeful for, Mike,
and what I'm sure the Reds are hopeful for here
very soon is that we can stop referring to him

(17:45):
when healthy. But unfortunately, because he thank you for the
phone call as always, man, I gotta run. Is he's
so often not healthy. That's the qualifier.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
You know.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
The topic came up last week. Jason Williams wrote the
column about you know, Hunter has to pitch better so
the Reds can trade him. I just I frame it
a lot of different ways. Here's one that I was
thinking about watching him pitch on Tuesday night. If he
was a free agent this offseason and he was, the

(18:16):
market for him was, you know, roughly forty two million
dollars over the next what is it, four seasons eight
point three next year, which is what he's due to make.
Every single one of us who care about the Cincinnati
Reds would be praying that they could sign him, or
at least wishing outwardly that they could sign him. Every

(18:37):
single one of us, every single one of us, including
the conversation, is injury history. If that guy was a
free agent this offseason and the going rate was eight
three next year, fifteen the year after that, I think
fifteen the year after that, you're gonna get this dude
for between forty and forty five mil for the next

(18:58):
four years everything at the age of now he's twenty six. Now,
every single one of us would be clamoring, bagging, banging
on the table, whatever it is, screaming and yelling that
the Reds have to sign him. And yet the thought
gets thrown out there that perhaps they would be better
off training him. It makes no sense. Least only makes sense.

(19:23):
He joins us.

Thanks, moved offices and built out a brand new studio,
so I feel good about everything. And I see you
at every game. Even so, my social media director says
to me, who is Moe Eggers.

Speaker 7 (21:48):
She says he is he is at every game.

Speaker 10 (21:51):
I said, he is mister Cincinnati. He is a man
of the people.

Speaker 2 (21:56):
I would agree with that part. I don't know if
I'm in every game, but I do love attending a
lot a lot of games. I do love attending sporting events.
I wish I was at this one in Dublin. We
get the Big twelve opener k State and Iowa State.
Kansas State is laying three lee what do we like?
Week zero?

Speaker 10 (22:15):
So here's what's interesting about this game. So a lot
of people are like, well, how can Kansas State be
favored over Iowa State when Iowa State beating them for
the last five times and covered every single game. They
had nearly identical schedules. Last year, Iowa State schedule was
rated thirty four toughest, Kansas State thirty eighth. But what's

(22:39):
interesting is the Wildcats were actually better in almost every
metric except for record. Example, Kansas State outgained opponents by
eighty three yards per game, Iowa State just sixty two.
So why did Iowa State go eleven and three in
Kansas State nine and four. I think it was mainly turnovers.
Iowa State was plus nine and turnovers for the year

(23:00):
the state minus one. After it seems like every year.
The two years before that there were plus eleven and
then plus twelve. I think this game is going to
come down to special teams. Kansas State might have the
best special teams in the country year in and year out.
And then I think Gaby Johnson might be able to
make a play with his feet. And also Iowa State's

(23:22):
pass rush. They went eleven to three last year with
only sixteen sacks on the season. And then the final
nail on the golf in Iowa State is going to
miss both of their starting receivers which went in the
second and third round, Jaden Higgins and Jalen Noel. They
combined for one hundred and sixty seven catches in seventeen touchdowns.
I don't think you can replace that right away. I

(23:44):
like Kansas State here. I think the right teams favored
twenty seven to twenty all.

Speaker 2 (23:47):
Right, laying the number will take the Wildcats. There's a
one other big twelve team in action. Kansas is hosting
Fresno State. The Jayhawk's a big favorite.

Speaker 10 (23:57):
Yeah, and I think most people will take Kansas and
think they're just going to roll here over a first
year coach. But what's interesting is they have a quarterback
AJ Warner for Fresno State. He started for a couple
of years for Temple, and actually he's a prolific passer.
I think maybe something is too much made of opening

(24:18):
up the new stadium, and a lot of times, you know,
we see teams open up new stadiums and they either
lose or they have to take it down to the
wire to win. I think thirteen points is too much here.
I think Kansas escapes here thirty one to twenty seven.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
All right, so my beloved Bearcats play a week from tonight.
They're going to be technically a home game lee in
Kansas City against Nebraska. We can sort of have a
chuckle at that can give me Give me a few
thoughts from your perspective on UC football.

Speaker 10 (24:47):
Well, I like the fact that they're bringing back their
quarterback from last year and have a ton of starters now.
They're also we're gonna have to find out how this
offensive line can come around. Their career stats drop to
eighty one. They have a couple of guys who projected
to possibly start and transfers, and that's important from smaller schools,
but also they need the secondary. Both looks like they

(25:10):
have new safety so that's important, and they got to
cut down. They can't allow opponents to run for four
point seven yards per Kerry. We'll hit into that game
a little bit more, but I think it's optimistic. I
think this team is gonna win six or seven games
this year. There's a bunch of teams in the conference.
I think they're a little bit overrated and might catch

(25:32):
them at the right time as far as scheduling, So
that's important. If you're looking for maybe a team that
might be a little underrated as far as the Big Twelve,
I think Utah is gonna be really good. I like
their transfer quarterback from New Mexico also love If you're
looking for an absolute shocker for a team not gonna

(25:52):
win the conference, but you want an over under. One
of my top wagers here is Houston. I think that
they can win their over run five and a half.
I think they can win seven eight games, so I
think Willie Fritz is one of the best coaches in
the Big Twelve. So those are a couple teams that
are underrated, maybe overrated as Texas Tech.

Speaker 3 (26:13):
You look at you.

Speaker 10 (26:14):
Know who they're returning, who they brought in. I just
think that Texas Tech is one of those teams when
expectations are high, they're they're usually gonna disappoint. So Texas Tech,
unless stay go like ten and two, they're gonna probably
consider all the money they spent.

Speaker 3 (26:31):
To be a failure.

Speaker 2 (26:34):

Youtuboe Buddy Semo Lee's.

Speaker 2 (27:50):
Website, Paramount sports dot Com. That guy has been a
staple on our show for a while now. We love
having him and love having college football back. This weekend
Nebraska a week from tonight's. The plan is to broadcast
this show from the broadcast booth at Arrowhead Stadium. We're
working on some logistical issues, but I'm I feel pretty

(28:12):
confident that that's gonna happen. Broadcasting from Arrowhead Stadium, WHI
would be a lot of fun before UC takes on Nebraska,
sixteen minutes away from four o'clock five point three seven
four nine. Fifteen thirty is our phone number. Tony Pike
with the latest from training camp. Today is like the
last day of training camp. Tony joins us next on
ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 5 (28:36):

Speaker 1 (29:10):
The USPN fifteen thirty with the latest from Bengals training camp,
brought you by Camba Credit Union on your official home
of the Cincinnati Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (29:23):
It's eight away from four o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen thirty.
Tony Pike joins us every hour. Tony Today is the
second to last day that your visits with us in
the afternoon, our training camp reports. On Monday, they become
season preview reports. Are you ready?

Speaker 11 (29:39):
You know it's one of the most exciting transitions of
the year mod because it means we're that much closer
to the start of the regular season for football.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
Very very true. So we're all waiting to see where
Dalton Reisner ends up. Maybe he's going to be a
Cincinnati Bengal. I think we're all hoping that he comes here.
Maybe he represents him upgrade from Lucas Patrick. But I
always hear about, like Kant new in chemistry on the
offensive line. Can you reasonably sign the guy in the
last week or so of August and expect him to

(30:07):
play and perform at a high level in the first
game that counts on the road.

Speaker 11 (30:12):
I think it's going to be difficult, But I don't
know if you would rather take that risk or risk
running out there Lucas Patrick to protect Joe Burrow against
Miles Garrett company. So I don't think either option is
ideal for the Cincinnati Bengals. But I know the history
of Dalton Rosner. He's a very good pass protecting guard,

(30:33):
that's what the Bengals need. Again, it's the lesser of
two evils. You want a guy that's going to have
time to be able to work and get in there.
But at the same time, you run the risk, if
not of putting what we've seen from Lucas Patrick on
the field right now against the Cleveland Browns and their
defensive front.

Speaker 2 (30:49):
That's not exactly an exciting proposition as we talk about
the preseason go ahead, if you had something to.

Speaker 11 (30:54):
Say, no, it's it's just it's not the idea you want,
And it would to the follow up of was there
a way that you could have gotten the deal done
with Reisner yesterday? Would you had to pay a little
bit more, probably, but was there something you could have
done that would have persuaded him not to take another
two visits and get the job done, And that way
you'd have him practicing now instead of, you know, continuing

(31:16):
to wait until he makes a decision.

Speaker 2 (31:18):
Moving forward. I want to talk about next year for
a second. We all acknowledged, you know what, play Joe
Burrow in the games that don't count because they've had
such a hard time getting off to good starts moving forward.
Is it possible that they could go back to the
way things were and the way things are in Buffalo,
where Josh Allen's not going to play a single snap,
or does this have to be the rule moving forward
where Joe plays at least a little bit in the preseason.

Speaker 11 (31:41):
I think that it's just what Joe wants to feel comfortable,
you know. I don't think there's a rhyme or reason.
I think Joe legitimately needs a couple opportunities in the
preseason where I'm sure Josh Allen's like, hey, I'm good,
I'm where I want to be. We know where the
continuity is. And if you did have that returning continuity
up front and you weren't trying.

Speaker 7 (32:00):
To implement any new guys, I think it would be.

Speaker 11 (32:02):
A little bit easier to do. But I don't think
it's an organization philosophy. I don't think it's as much
Zach Taylor. I think it comes down to what Joe
Burrow is clamoring for, and it's hard not to listen
to that from your franchise quarterback.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
We'll talk again coming up in just about an hour. Tony,
thanks so much. Okay, No, that's our guy. Tony Pike
three forty five, four forty five, and five forty five
every day until the season begins. Right now, they're training
camp reports. Next week they become season preview reports. Don't
forget on Saturday we have the Bengals and Colts. That
game is going to kick off at one o'clock on

(32:37):
ESPN fifteen thirty. Pregame coverage begins at eleven thirty Saturday morning.
I like the daytime preseason game. We don't I think
the last time the Bengals played in one of those.
And I could be dead wrong about this. I think
the last time they played I think a day game.
I think that was a game where vont Has Perfect.

(32:58):
In fact, I believe it was against I think there
were still the Redskins at the time. Montes Perfect was
a part of a play that he didn't get flagged
for but ended up getting suspended at the start of
the season four. My memory may be awful, but I
believe that's the last time the Bengals played a preseason game,
at least a preseason home game during the day. As

(33:19):
someone who likes daytime sports, sign me up for it.
I want to see if we can arrive at a
happy medium when it comes to preparing for the preseason
and preparing for the regular season. We'll get to that.
More of your phone calls. Plus Chad Brendle on the
Bearcats and Dan Claskins on Fantasy football on ESPN fifteen

gonna join us in just a few the talks and
UC football and basketball. Dan Klaskins back for another year.
As you prepare for your fantasy football drafts, He's got

(34:26):
some dos and donts. He's got advice more from Tony
Pike as well. Plus Bredaman and Jones on baseball. Bredaman
and Jones maybe on baseball today. We will find out
we've got some more Bengal stuff to get to get
to here in just a bit. Sal Stewart Homer it
again last night, and you are likely among the many

(34:49):
who are ready to see the Reds call up their
top prospect. I Matt McClain has been talked about a
lot this year, and I certainly do not believe it's
worth Matt McLain is worth giving up on. I believe
Matt McClain is worth giving chances to. There's no reason

(35:10):
that he can't be a part of the team next year.
There's no reason that he can't still be a quality
big league player. But what the Reds did with Matt
McClain this season cannot be what they do with him
next season. And I think they're kind of telling you that.
You know, early in the season, Matt McClain was this
team starting second basement and two hole hitter. They traded

(35:35):
Jonathan India because they had Matt McClain. They traded four
Gavin lux And in spring training and at the beginning
of the season did not even entertain the idea of
playing him at second base. He was the guy and
he was going to be batting second. Those two things
were earmarked for Matt McClain this offseason. That cannot be
the case this coming off season. Doesn't mean the guy

(35:57):
can't be on the team, doesn't mean the guy can't
win a job. But what they did with Matt McLean
which is say he goes unchallenged, he is the guy
because he's earned it. Uh uh not next year. And
by the way, you know, they had him batting second,
slid him down in the batting order, moved him back
up to two. Now recently, when he does play, which

(36:18):
has not been every day, he has been batting lower
in the batting order, and understandably so. Two nights ago,
in the second game of that series against the Angels,
he hit ninth. He hit ninth on Monday, he hit
ninth on Saturday. Like that, he's batting ninth. And at

(36:43):
times he doesn't play at all. And they used Gavin
Lux at second base. So what's interesting to me is
like we spent a lot of time. It reminded me
of Jeremy Hill in twenty fifteen. Remember the Bengals, not
even just Jeremy Hill, but the Bengals in twenty fifteen
had a really good team but the running game wasn't great.
The year before, Jeremy Hill was one of the best

(37:03):
rookies in the sporting might have been offensive Rookie of
the Year, I don't know, but he was terrific. And
in twenty fifteen, the Bengals had a terrific team, very
good defense. Andy Dalton had a good year. They had
good skill guys, really good offensive line. And I remember
early in the season it was, geez, wait until this
running game gets going. And then, you know, kind of

(37:25):
in the middle of the season, it was the running
game hasn't gotten going yet, but it's still going to
right and then it was, yeah, the running game is
not going to get going, Like you just kept waiting
for something to happen that you thought was gonna happen,
but never did happen. So early in the season, remember
it was should we start worrying about Matt McClain, No, No,

(37:48):
don't worry about And then it was I'm starting to
get a little bit worried about Matt McClain. Yeah, me too,
And then it was the Reds are worried about Matt
McClain because they've moved him to the bottom of the
batting order. And I remember doing this one day. And
this isn't to say that I was right, because I'm
wrong about a lot of things. But I remember at
one point, late May, maybe early June, wondering out loud,

(38:12):
why does this guy have a leash that is so
long that it makes almost it makes it almost impossible
to even think about the Reds sending him to Louisville.
And my take at the time was, we have to
brand minor league emotions differently. It's not punishment. It's we
think you're either not ready to help the team here,

(38:34):
or we think you have some things to work on
down there, and we want you to work on them
while not having that work come at the expense of
the major league club where the results matter. It could
be we want you to go down and just have
some success and maybe that builds your confidence. And it

(38:54):
was remarkable to me the amount of pushback to that
that I got. Oh, you can't send him down to Louisville,
like you could send everybody else down to Louisville. And
look at how many players have been sent like noelve,
Marte could not have been more in the doghouse at
the beginning of the season. Imagine this team without him.
Now they've sent Christian and Carnassi on strand to Louisville.
Will Benson's been on a shuttle between here and Louisville,

(39:17):
and I was seventy one. I can't help but wonder this,
and we're never going to get an answer. At some
point during the spring, what if they would have sent
him to Louisville, Not to punish him, that's not the idea,
but just to allow him to work on some things
without the pressure of batting seconds and playing in the

(39:40):
big leagues every day. There's a little bit more instructing
in the minor league level. Maybe nothing would have happened.
I maybe there would be no change in how he performed,
maybe he never would have been called back up. But
I just it's I've been thinking a lot about Noelve
Marte in the season that he has had, and how
much credit I think that dude deserves for like pulling

(40:03):
himself out of the depths of the doghouse that he
was in, and understandably so. The guy was demoted to
the minor leagues weeks before spring training even ended, and
by all accounts, the dude went to work and he's
been a big part of this team this year made
Jamer Candelario and his salary expendable. Why couldn't they have
done something similar with Matt McLean. Why can't they do

(40:26):
something like that with him now? Especially with Sal Stewart.
Absolutely Raking, I don't love the idea of the savior
coming from Louisville, not this late in the season, or hey,
the key to our season's currently in the minor leagues
right now. But if you're running this club and you
have a small margin for air, and you're gonna have

(40:48):
to win the fifty to fifty games, and you've got
a team that is offensively challenged, some of the things
you've tried at second base just haven't worked. By the way,
Sal Stewart he ain't gonna play third, They've worked him
in at second base and a little first base here.
It's not been a ton, but it's been notable. How

(41:09):
do you not call the guy up for the next
five weeks, because while it might be a bit much
to expect him to provide a ton of offense, could
he provide maybe just enough, just this little bit, just
this little bit, And could that be the difference between
making the postseason and not making the postseason. I can't

(41:29):
help but think the answer is maybe yes. And if
the answer is no, then what's the harm. What's the
harm in calling him up? It can't be Oh, they'll
derail his development. Really, five weeks in the big leagues
is going to derail his development. It really can't even be. Well,
you know, defensively, you know they've tried to jam round

(41:50):
pegs into square holes on defense for a while. Now,
why stop at Sal Stewart in maybe second base? So
we'll see. But Matt McLean John Sadax sent on the
TV broadcast last night that he fully believes he is
going to be a good big leaguer and that is fine.
You have to account for the fact he didn't play
at all last year. I just if we could do

(42:10):
it all over again this year with him. I can't
help but wonder what would have made sense to just
send him down to Louisville for his sake as much
as the teams. Thirteen minutes after four o'clock, Chad Brendel
is going to join us UC football starts a week

Speaker 7 (43:49):
I just was making sure I didn't get banished.

Speaker 3 (43:51):
That's all banished.

Speaker 2 (43:51):
I was like, oh boy, uh, well, no, it takes
a lot to get banned on this show. You have
not done enough. But you know you're You're welcome to try.
You're welcome to try.

Speaker 7 (44:03):
Well.

Speaker 8 (44:03):
The problem is, like I could actually do enough to
get vanished, being that you give me the keys to
the car more regularly than you should. But I like
being the unofficial fill in hosts, so I'll try not
to do.

Speaker 2 (44:23):
Your official prediction for the season is seven and five.
I think that sounds about right. If they're better than that.
What has gone right that you don't necessarily expect.

Speaker 8 (44:36):
They either one or two things on defense, they find
a pass rush or the turnover numbers go up pretty significantly.
I mean, if you don't have either of those things,
no matter how good your pieces are on defense, it
becomes really hard to be a good defense, especially in

(44:59):
a league that's kind of offense first. You're in an
offense first league. You can't get to the quarterback and
you don't turn the other team over like it doesn't
matter how good the pieces are really, so one of
those two things has to happen. Uh. And then offensively,
the past game is what we think it can be.

(45:22):
I like the wide receivers. I like the group that
they have put together more than any group since probably
what Tyler Scott, Trey Tucker, Alec Pierce as I'm saying.
These guys are NFL guys.

Speaker 3 (45:36):
Like those guys.

Speaker 8 (45:37):
But it's been a pretty bad wide receiver room for
you know, three years now. So I think those are
the two things that if they happen, we might maybe
under sell them at five.

Speaker 2 (45:50):
I know you have Art, Yeah, you and I have
talked about his progress throughout Fall Camp. Brennan Soresby just
physically looks different and by all accounts has had to terrific.
Can't dive into that for me. What do you What
have you seen from him during practices this go around
that we didn't see enough of in games last year.

Speaker 8 (46:09):
I think the one thing that really stands out for
Memo is is more of the route tree being opened.
We've seen more stuff over the middle down the field.
We've seen you know, more designed rollouts, more plays where
it looks like they have more confidence in who they
have running these routes to open up more than the

(46:32):
deep ball, the curl and you know, a tight end
down the scene like that. It didn't feel like there
was a lot of variety in the passing game last year,
and I think some of that was I don't know
if they necessarily trusted, you know, guys to get open
to really run, like the type of route combos that

(46:54):
you feel like, Okay, we know we're gonna run this
play and we're gonna get this guy open. But we're
seeing more of that from him. We're seeing, I think
him let the ball go with a little bit more
confidence and hopefully we're seeing him not I think what
really impacted him at the end of last year, over

(47:14):
those last five games, he was a little happy feet
in the pocket right like he was exiting and looking
to run a lot quicker than he did at the
beginning of the year. I think for him, he can run,
but I want him back there throwing the football, and

(47:34):
that feels like if he can stick in the pocket
another second or two and wait for a guy to
come open, I think that that is very good for
the future of Cincinnati's offer.

Speaker 2 (47:44):
I felt like he got gun shy, and we could
talk about their weapons or lack thereof last year, but
I felt like something happened right around that UCF game
the just for whatever reason, caused Brendan to get gun shy.

Speaker 8 (47:58):
Yeah, it looked like, you know, one read check down,
get out of the pocket, like it didn't. There wasn't
a lot of rhythm back there, remember in the beginning
of the year, and.

Speaker 3 (48:07):
Maybe this was it.

Speaker 8 (48:08):
Like he took some hits hanging in there and delivered
some good throws under pressure, and we didn't see that
a whole lot at the end of the season. Not
that I want him taking hits, but I don't want
him head down.

Speaker 3 (48:22):
Looking for an escape route as quick as we saw.

Speaker 2 (48:27):
Fair enough the offensive line, are they good enough and
are they going to be big enough a week from tonight?

Speaker 8 (48:35):
I think they're big enough. I mean, you saw him.
Joe Cotton is a giant human six six three twenty
and looks like you could add twenty more pounds to
him pretty easily, Like he is a big boy. Tarn
TiO is A is a another three hundred and twenty pounder.

Speaker 3 (48:54):
Gavin Gerhard is big.

Speaker 8 (48:56):
So I think they're big enough to handle Nebraska's defensive line,
and the question is the cohesiveness. This is almost a
brand new group. You've got your starting center back and
a sometimes starter at right tackle back. The other three guys,
are you know, gonna be playing together really for the
first time. How quickly does that come together? Because you

(49:21):
feel like over the course of the season the pieces
are good and it'll get better. How good is it
against Nebraska especially? You know, do you get the run
game going early and kind of put some pressure on
that Nebraska front.

Speaker 2 (49:35):
You were on the air filling in for me on
Tuesday when we found out that Jigsel James has been
removed from the men's basketball program. I hope this has
a happy resolution for Gigsel James the human being. From
a pure basketball perspective, am I wrong for not necessarily
shrugging my shoulders but not necessarily feeling like that? From

(49:59):
an encore perspective, this departure will completely derail their season.

Speaker 8 (50:05):
Well you, Fortunately for us, you do listen to a
lot of our content on bearcatjournal dot com. I'm not
sure why, but you do. You heard me say numerous
times last year I'm not in love with Gisel James
and the iteration that we saw a year ago. He
was incredibly inefficient. He didn't shoot the three well. He

(50:28):
takes a lot of the worst shot in basketball, which
is the fourteen to eighteen foot jump shot. When he's
got it going, it looks really good, but it's the
most inefficient shot in basketball for a reason. And a
guy that's that's shooting forty two percent from the floor
in twenty eight percent from three being the guy that's

(50:52):
your highest usage player typically a pretty bad sign for
your offense. You know, I think think they went out
and they found some pieces that fit together better this
off season that you know, hopefully would have taken some
of that that pressure, that load off of him, because
I do think some of it wasn't necessarily Gisele's fault.

(51:13):
It just became how are we going to score at Chisel.

Speaker 3 (51:15):
And day Day don't do that.

Speaker 8 (51:17):
But I went into the off season, you know, pretty
open and saying I think you could keep one of
Gigsel or dayDay. I didn't love keeping both, and I
understand why they did because of the amount of turnover.
You know, you want to bring back two guards that
have history in your system. But I just I thought

(51:39):
they're fairly similar, and Dade was the one that elevated
his three point shooting. So I don't think it's going
to be incredibly damaging, especially from an offensive standpoint, where
I think it's going to get you.

Speaker 3 (51:53):
A little bit more flow.

Speaker 8 (51:54):
And the biggest thing though, as a point guard that
had the ball in his hands a lot ever got
to the pre throw line.

Speaker 2 (52:01):
That was my biggest issue.

Speaker 8 (52:02):
Yes, eight free throw shooter doesn't get to the pre
throw line, Like, how do you fix that? So it
sucks all of it. I hope he can get his
life back on track, but strictly from a basketball standpoint,
I don't think it's you know, it looks on the

(52:24):
surface pretty damaging, right your leading scorer, Yeah, played you know,
the most minutes and now he is gone. But I
think they can they can navigate not having him fairly well. Well.

Speaker 2 (52:35):
I felt like from a basketball perspective, I felt like
there was so much heat kind of aimed at Dan
Skillings last year, and at times understandably so that that
Jisel's play wasn't wasn't talked about enough relative to what
I thought he was going to be as a sophomore. Yeah,
I was. I was really disappointed. And again from a
human perspective, I hope he's cool. I hope whatever has

(52:58):
to get figured out gets figured doubt, but I kept
thinking about the amount of times last year that everybody
is talking about Dan. I wondered, like, when's when's the
jizzle that I thought was going to show up in
year two show up?

Speaker 3 (53:11):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (53:11):
I completely agree, and unfortunately that was they expected both
of those guys to take a significant step forward, and
both of them took a step back. That's that's usually
grounds for moving on and trying something different.

Speaker 2 (53:29):
Well said, all right, man, thanks as always.

Speaker 8 (53:32):
Appreciate youam. I hope you enjoyed load management summer.

Speaker 2 (53:35):

This report, nationals won nothing. It's in the third inning.
Forget that. Let's talk with our guy, Dan Klaskins. He
is back. He has joined us every Thursday since I
started hosting this show. He goes back many many, many
many years on this radio station helping folks as they
navigate the world of fantasy football and is a prepared

(56:55):
this time of year for their fantasy football drafts. He
is the host of Fanatics Insider on a serious XM fantasy.
He is on Twitter at Dan Klaskins and since it's
a Thursday, he's with us. Now, what's up, sir. It's
awesome to have you. How are you.

Speaker 3 (57:09):
Oh, it's a great time of the year. We're taking
a break from draft and teams here to talk to
you for a few minutes.

Speaker 2 (57:16):
That's been I appreciate it. We've got drafts being planned
and in the process of happening over the next couple
of weeks. Let's discuss some draft strategies. Let's talk quarterbacks
and running backs today. Start at QB for me, give
me just one or two overall quarterback draft strategies.

Speaker 3 (57:35):
Yeah, quarterback is the most important position I think of
all of them. To know your league scoring, there's so
many different formats. I mean, obviously super flex league, you
can start a second quarterback two quarterback league. But even
if you're in an eight, ten or twelvecome lea. The
deeper the league, the less quarterbacks are available on the
way to work from a draft strategy, I don't want
to be the first person to take a quarterback, but

(57:57):
I do like to get one of those elite guys
if possible. If not, I'm definitely waiting around, and I'll
probably take two of the guys that are more fringe
starters and take a wait later, longer wait the earlier
you take a second quarterback. And my most short hometown
league sixteen man rosters one quarterback starter. I don't think
you need to draft a second quarterback. That's the biggest
mistake I see teams make. You can always pick up

(58:19):
guys on the waiver wire and those types of league.

Speaker 2 (58:22):
Let's play a game of draft or a pass with
three different tiers of quarterbacks. Let's give me let's talk
early rounds. Give me a draft, give me a pass.
As you look at early round qbs.

Speaker 3 (58:34):
Yeah, it's funny because Joe Burrow was my guy that
would be the draft guy in those first five to
six quarterbacks. Quarterbacks. Really there's about four guys that are
arguably on top tiers. Then Burroughs was there in the
middle before you get to the next guys. But the
reality of it is, Burrough's flying up the board. You've
gone from QB five to QB three on the nf
to see draft the high stakes leagues, and last since

(58:56):
August first, Challeen Hurts is now the guy because whoever's
last guy of those five, that's the one I would
like the most in those early rounds because I like
whether it's Alan Jackson, Burrow, Jaydon Daniels, Jalen Hurts. Give
me one of those guys I'm going early. The guy
I'm passing on is the guy going right after QB six,
Patrick Mahomes. I like Mahomes earlier in the year in

(59:17):
basketball drafts. I was getting him later on mid rounds,
which i'd take my chances. At the reality of it
there is he's been far from the lead in fantasy
now for a few years, and to be that first
quarterback taken out of that what I consider second tier
fantasy quarterbacks is not a place I want to be,
so in the mid rounds, I'm definitely turning to Kyler
Murray as my target. I'm gonna be one of the

(59:38):
last people to leave the draft to start. Here's the
guy did not only give you that rushing floor upside,
but does you have the playmakers and Marvin Harrison Junior
and Trade McBride and the defense's not that great. So
all those things aligned for a potential uprise of his
current value. And then I'm passing on Justin Field at
QB fourteen. Yeah, there's rushing floor that he gives it.

(59:59):
The Jets is going to be nice, but he's not
very good to watch, very inconsistent and frankly with the job.
Security is there, but I think he could do better
in the lay rounds. That's cam Ward. Love him with
the Titans. I think he's the most under talked about
first round quarterback I can ever remember all my years
of fantasy a guy going number one overall. But I
love what they're building there in Tennessee. Again, I think

(01:00:20):
the defense isn't that great. I don't think it's going
to be Jayan Daniels or CJ. Strouds rookie season. No
Lestians drafted its QB twenty four right now and again
in some hometown one QB leagues, you're not going to
pick any quarterbacks up that deep super flex or if
you go twenty man rousters, or perhaps you're playing in
the fourteen team league. This is definitely somebody I think

(01:00:41):
is going to deliver value. And finally, my past in
the lay rounds to a Tagabaloa, I'm sorry, I get
the upside. The Dolphins are there. There's a reason he's
QB twenty three. I don't trust him. I don't think
anybody out there should draft him in a trustworthy way.

Speaker 2 (01:00:58):
Dan Glaskins with his host of fanatics in side or
Football on Sirius XM Fantasy on Twitter at dan Klaskins.
Let's do the same thing with running backs. Give me
an overall draft strategy and then break it down draft
or pass by draft tiers.

Speaker 3 (01:01:13):
Yeah, running backs are interesting because we went through a
period there in fantasy where you had to have running back,
running back, running back, running back, and then for a
few years recently it's gone everybody's wide receiver, drum me,
no no hero running back, zero running back all these strategies.
Here's what I'll tell you. I got to have at
least one running back I can count on to be
my RB one. I'll play it around from there. But

(01:01:33):
you have to play your board. Sometimes in those early rounds,
depending on the draft here, you might see running backs
to have a more printing. Well, that's what I'm taking receivers.
You have to be fluid. What you want is end
up your team at at least two, maybe three of
those top already running backs. I definitely like to have
at least one time ten running back. But this is
a position where you're going to build depth, and you're

(01:01:55):
going to strike it at each part of the draft
by finding the targets you like. So in regards to
my early round, mid round, late round guys, let's start
with the earlier Josh Jacobs were drafting him. He's rby eleven.
He gets the volume, I get it, he's got a
lot of mileage. But the Packers are a team that
scores points. They want to run the football. His top
back up's already hurt again, so I don't think there's

(01:02:16):
a lot of competition for carries DSRB eleven at RB
fourteen to get pre Sault. A couple of years ago.
This guy was RB one in fantasy, and it's not
that I don't think he could still be valuable. There's
just other running backs at that part. I'm not in
on the Jets obviously with the Justin Field, but the
pres Hall could be also carrying with sharing with Braylan
Allen and at RB fourteen, I'd rather go other directions.

(01:02:39):
As we moved to the mid round, a couple of
guys I really like and don't like, like Isaiah Picecko
at RB twenty four. The Chiefs running back was hurt
to start year. Even when he came back, he wasn't himself,
but again not a lot of competition behind him. Kansas City, Yeah,
I might not like Mahomes with QB six, I still
like the offense. I think they're going to run the
football a little bit more and I think the Checki's
great value. There a couple spot that after he got

(01:03:00):
Aaron Jones RB twenty seven. This is a guy that
I think Jordan Mason better, the guy that they brought
in from San Francisco, who's won A one B in
this committee. The problem is I'd rather go one B
A few rounds later. Jones is near thirty or just
past thirty years of age. He's definitely had some injury concerns.
I'm getting out on him this year at that price
and a little bit later in the draft to Corey

(01:03:23):
to Corey Crossby mayor double Crosby Mayor. With every calling
and stuff, I'm calling a guy I want. He's gone
from RB fifty seven the first two weeks of August
RB thirty six in the last seven days when Brian
Robinson out on his way out of Washington. This is
a guy that he had also back A nice value
is there is RB three's and RB four is and no,
I'm passing on Joe Nixon. He keeps falling down and down,

(01:03:45):
and he did fall down deep enough in the draft
the air night where I grabbed him his RB four
and double digit round. But here's the thing, RB thirty
four right now, we're not making sure he's going to
play me one lets he has lek and more says anything.
Houston's offensive line actually the running run blocking there is brutal.
So I'm out on Joe Mixon. I'm really out on
all Texans running.

Speaker 2 (01:04:07):
Dan Klaskins is with us. We've got the high school
football tonight show tomorrow the premiere for the twenty twenty
five season on ESPN fifteen thirty. Tell me about that

Look you boy, Hollywood Casino, Lawrenceburg, on your official home

Speaker 5 (01:05:38):
ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (01:05:40):
Tony Pike with training camp reports. You know today is
basically technically the last day of training camp. There's no
workout tomorrow. Bengals hosting the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday. Tony,
it's not too early to start talking about players who
need to do something on Saturday. How many of them
are there in your opinion?

Speaker 11 (01:05:57):
Well, first, I'm I have to go through and completely
redo my board for Fantasy football this year. That just
wrecked everything the last segment that I had. I don't
think there's many jobs that are up for grabs for
this team. If you look at where this roster is
from a one and two deep standpoint, I think you
feel pretty good about where you're at. Yes, there are
questions all over the defensive side of the ball. But

(01:06:19):
is anything you're going to see Saturday from a player
that's already on this roster going to do enough to
say yep, they need a roster spot. Outside of a
performance like what you saw from Mitchell Tinsley and then
Joe Burrow coming out and advocating for you, I don't
know how many jobs are open. I think it would
do des Ritter really well to show out against Indianapolis,
for one, for his security, but two, if he's able

(01:06:41):
to show out, and maybe you do use Mitchell Tinsley
or someone like that, maybe you can find an increased
value if you were to ever move on from Tinsley
or someone like that when it gets to to trades
as the season winds near. But as a player to
player basis, I don't think you're looking at many jobs
on the line on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (01:06:58):
I would agree with that. And with that we'll talk
again coming up at five forty five, Tony, Thank you
so much, all right, Moll, All right, right, now it's
time for Breneman and Jones on baseball. I have heart failure,
and now.

Superior life here. If your weekend is starting tonight, joy

(01:08:16):
and ice cold, mid culture or whatever you're doing this weekend,
It's week zero. At college football. We have games this
weekend a pretty good one of the Big twelve Case
State Iowa State. Enjoy and ice cold mic culture. If
you're staying up late this weekend to watch the Reds,
ice cold mid culture. If you aren't doing nothing that
sports related, if you're just hanging out with your buddies,
enjoy an ice cold mid culture, please, though enjoy responsibly.

(01:08:40):
Al Golden had some things to say about where the
blame lies for the bengals defensive performances in the first
two preseason games. We'll get to that coming up here
in just a bit. And can the Reds win in
spite of their bullpen? That coming up as well. Plus
we'll preview the first game of this year's Skyline Chile

(01:09:03):
Crosstown Showdown, which fits East Central versus Lawrenceburg tomorrow night.
That coming up at about thirty minutes. We're scoreboard watching.
We're not just scoreboard watching, we're actually watching baseball games.
The Mets are playing one right now against the Washington Nationals.
So the good news last night is despite the fact
that the Reds lost two to one, they didn't lose
any ground. New York lost to Washington last night. Today

(01:09:26):
they lead Mackenzie gore in the Nationals by a score
of three to nothing. The Mets are batting still with
two outs in the top of the fourth inning. That
game is in Washington, d C. So New York trying
to extend their lead over the Reds to a game
and a half. If Washington were to come back, then
the Reds would be a half game out of that
last wildcard spot and the Mets come here. It's gonna

(01:09:47):
be a big series now if things and less things
totally unravel for either team that first full weekend of September.
The Reds are in Arizona off night tonight. D back
series starts tomorrow. If you are wondering, New York, which
is on the road in Washington, heads to Atlanta this weekend.
The Braves just lost too out of three to the

(01:10:09):
Mets in New York last week, and so there you go.
There's where things stand right now. Last night's loss. Look,
they lost the game because they scored one run. They
lost the game because they had an opportunity to play
add on baseball in the second, didn't had guys in
scoring position in the fifth and sixth, and you just
had the sense that the inability to push a run
Across was going to catch up to him. It did.

(01:10:31):
Graham Ashcraft was the victim, the culprit, the goat, however
you want to put it, the bullpen. Things are so
weird with this bunch right now. Luis May was pitching
in the eighth inning in the first two games of
this Anaheim Series. Today he has been sent to Louisville.
That guy goes from pitching in high leverage situations in
the middle of a playoff race to now he's not

(01:10:52):
even on the team. We'll see if that changes on
or around September the first, but it has felt like,
whether be because of overuse or inexperience or bad luck,
whatever it is, that recently, even in games they have won,
whatever button Terry Francona has pushed in relation to his

(01:11:13):
relievers hasn't really worked out. And we've discussed all year long,
all year long, how the Reds have to win in
spite of a shaky offense, and Miguel and Duharr has
been a terrific pickup. But for the most part, you know,
as much as the offense can flash here and there,
it's not a team that in the final five weeks

(01:11:36):
of the season or so you can count on to
win a lot of games nine to eight. They're gonna
have to overcome some offensive deficiencies. I guess the question becomes,
can they either overcome or figure out a way to
manage some bullpen issues that have come up? Can they
lean on their starting pitching even more than they already have?

(01:11:58):
We will see. We have issued the first ever banishment
on this show. And it's not to a caller. We
don't believe in that. It's not to a listener. We
obviously don't believe in that. The banishment is to the
verbiage league average defense. How many times have you heard this?

(01:12:21):
They just have to have the Bengals league average defense.
I understand at face value what anybody who says that means.
We all get it right. Hey, the offense is awesome.
The offense could be elite. The offense might be the
best in the NFL. They certainly have elite explosive weapons
and a lister at quarterbacks. So when you have that,

(01:12:45):
you just have to not screw it up. Yeah, I
get it.

Speaker 3 (01:12:47):
Man.

Speaker 2 (01:12:48):
Had the Bengals defense last year just been a let's
not screw it up defense, then maybe the Bengals are
a playoff team last year, certainly one that you wouldn't
have wanted to play. So I understand you've got any
lead offense. You've paid these dudes on offense. Those guys
make up the backbone the identity of the team. So
the defense just has to be somewhere middle of the pack.

(01:13:10):
We're not gonna put it in those terms anymore, because,
like you want an elite defense in certain moments of
the season, right like the fourth quarter, it's it's it's
not gonna be any solace if the Bengals are up
in a game, I don't know, thirty one to twenty
seven to fourth quarter, other guy has the ball minute

(01:13:32):
to go, thirty yard line, one time out in their
back pocket. If I just shrug my shoulders and go,
a league average defense, league average defense gets that stop, frankly,
probably less than half the time, if the offense is
any good. What I want to know about this defense
is not are they league average? What I want to
know about this defense? And we are not getting this

(01:13:53):
answer during training camp. I don't know that we ever
would have gotten this answer during training camp. We're not
going to get it on Saturday. What is the more
important about this defense is whether or not they can
answer the question can they win a game?

Speaker 8 (01:14:06):
For you?

Speaker 2 (01:14:09):
There will be weeks in all likelihood where maybe Joe
Burrow just doesn't have it, or the offense is just
it's not clicking, or the other team's defense just has
its way, or the other team's defensive coordinator just has
the perfect plan for what the Bengals do, or maybe

(01:14:29):
the offense is poorly officiated, maybe play calling becomes a problem.
There are going to be moments this year where the
Bengals are asked to overcome a shaky offensive performance. It happens.
To win a championship, you have to win games in
a lot of different ways. Sometimes you have to come back,
Sometimes you have to stave off a comeback. Sometimes you

(01:14:52):
win a really high scoring shootout. Can the Bengals win
the types of games where you know what the offense
kind of spun its tie? They scored thirteen points. That
will not be the average offensive performance by this team.
I think most of us agree with that, right, But
it's a long season, seventeen games. They play some good teams.

(01:15:14):
Other guys get coached too. Luck is always a factor.
What if a variety of those things work against the
Bengals offense, does Al Golden have a unit that can
win a game for them, maybe with a lot riding
on it. You know, by the way, you don't have
to look that far back. Last year they had some
games like that. Sometimes they fell flat on their face.

(01:15:35):
They didn't tackle enough against New England on a day
where Joe Burrow and the offense scored ten points. They
did enough against a bad Giants team. On a night
where Joe Burrow basically made one play against New York
ran for sixty yards for a touchdown. Bengals scored seventeen points.
Defense came up big Trey Hendrickson a major reason why
in the last game of the season against Pittsburgh, to

(01:15:57):
keep their playoff hopes alive. So there were moments like
that last year. By and large, you think of last season,
you think of the Bengal scoring a whole bunch of
points and at times those points being wasted because the
defense couldn't stop anybody.

Speaker 5 (01:16:09):
Yes, yes, with.

Speaker 2 (01:16:11):
This year's team, you wonder, are there gonna be more
games like that? Well, there'd be more games where you go, man,
Joe Burrow was awesome, or Jamar Chase was otherworldly, or Offensively,
they did everything they wanted to and the defense just
couldn't get a stop, not even one couldn't get a stop.
They're gonna have to win games like that, but to

(01:16:32):
win a championship, and that's kind of still the goal here, right,
to win a championship. How will this defense perform? Maybe
against good teams, maybe against not so good teams when
they have to lean on it a little bit more
than they would like, that's when they need better than
a league average defense. You could talk about this from

(01:16:54):
a thirty thousand foot view, from a macro perspective, yes, statistically,
the defense just has to be okay. If the Bengals
have the most highest scoring offense in the NFL, well,
then the Bengals can win their share of games without
the two thousand Baltimore Ravens being on the field. But
week to week, maybe in a big game, maybe in

(01:17:16):
a divisional game, maybe in a road game, maybe in
a game that could ultimately determine whether or not they
make the postseason, Maybe a game that could determine whether
or not they win the division. Maybe in a game
that could determine whether or not dare I say they
have home field advantage, maybe in a game that helps
them avoid the dreaded slow start, maybe a playoff game.

(01:17:40):
You know, we've seen the Bengals with Joe Burrow as
QB win big games before where he wasn't awesome or
he was hit a lot. By the way, that's a
possibility to behind this offensive line, by the way, no
Dalton Reisner news today and the defense was either opportunistic
or just damn good? Does Al Golden have a unit

(01:18:04):
that could win those types of games this year? Maybe
as soon as Week one? Look, man, you might go, dude,
it's the Browns. They're gonna be terrible. Burrow's playing in
the preseason, He's gonna cook. Maybe probably Is that a
guarantee with this offense's Week one track record? Does Al

(01:18:27):
Golden have a unit? I don't care about league average.
We are no longer putting it in those terms, not
on this show. Can it win games for you? If
the answer is no, you're not winning a championship. If
the answer is no, they're really not even coming close.

(01:18:47):
You can't just hope the defense every weeks gets one
or two stops that may work at times. Chances are
it's gonna have to this year, Can it win games
for you? If you're not in a law ongoing yes,
based on what based on not history, because I will

(01:19:08):
admit to you last year there were times the Bengals
defense did enough to you know, kind of be the
main reason why they won the game, but overwhelmingly so
was the reason why they lost. Based on personnel, based
on scheme, based on who they have. Can you really
say with complete confidence, you know what, this team this
year can win games for the Bengals. That's what I

(01:19:30):
want to know. That's the question that has to get answered.
We're not going to get that answer at all likelihood
week one, maybe we do, but at some point this
season it's going to have to be answered, and probably
more than once, and maybe with a lot riding on
the outcome. Can an l golden defense win games for you?
If the answer is mow their league average, well, then

(01:19:54):
half the time the answer is going to be no.
I don't know that that's going to be good enough.
Eighteen after five o'clock. Uh, we've been very guest heavy today.

get you in on Twitter at maleger thanks to Delta Dental.

Going to Delta DENTALOAH dot com. We have Al Golden audio.
You'll hear the defensive coordinator of the Bengals point the
finger at himself.

(01:20:53):
of a potinole in the left lane. Police they're trying

Speaker 2 (01:21:03):
Twenty five after five o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen thirty.
Let's see, we've got the Al Golden audio. AL Golden.
The Bengals defense has underwhelmed in the two preseason games
so far. Al says, don't don't get big mad at
the players point the finger at me. He hears him
basically saying.

Speaker 12 (01:21:21):
That, uh yeah, again, that's any any blame on that,
it goes absolutely on my shoulders. That's a decision that
that we made in conjunction with Zach and just trying
trying to limit you know, anybody's perview in terms of
what we're doing. So again, from that standpoint, what we
what we have to do better in every phase of

(01:21:43):
the game is you know, we need to tackle better,
we need to take the ball away, we need to
be situational where all those little things are really what
the standard is in terms of what we're trying to
get done in these games, but not necessarily, you know,
trying to out scheme somebody.

Speaker 2 (01:21:58):
All right, So that's al Golder. Nobody he was talking about.
There was the fact that in the preseason games they've
quote dumbed it down, right, they haven't shown much that
sort of thing. That's all well and good. I guess
I don't know, man, I'm not an expert on anything.
But what I watched was just a team getting pushed around,
a team getting worked, a team taking bad angles. It

(01:22:19):
wasn't that like you know, with Washington and Philadelphia, they
weren't exactly rewriting the script for offensive football, reinventing the
wheel offensively. I don't think that either team was, like,
you know, doing a whole bunch of stuff that you know,
kind of were the antithesis of what the Bengals were doing.
Those offensive approaches seemed dumbed down as well, and in

(01:22:40):
Philadelphia's that were doing it with backups. Now here's Al
Golden answering the question, how do they address some of
their issues? What gives them confidence that they could address
some of their issues?

Speaker 12 (01:22:54):
That's what I see every day in practice. Again, what
I just saw, you know, on the field and plane
move the ball, and like, you know, our our ones
were out there.

Speaker 13 (01:23:01):
I don't know.

Speaker 12 (01:23:02):
You guys probably you know, probably have account if you
do help me out, but I'm guessing our ones were
out there. I'm sweating like Ted Striker here, guys, can
someone do? Can someone do something about the heat?

Speaker 8 (01:23:13):
Here?

Speaker 2 (01:23:14):
The reference our good reference.

Speaker 12 (01:23:16):
Our ones probably did thirty five plays, right? What are
our ones played the other day? You know, you know,
eight plays or whatever. So I'm excited to go upstairs
and look at every situation. Ben it was, it was
short Yarge, it was low red, it was third down,
it was get back on, trade was everything. So we
had a chance to really call it. And I'm excited
to go up there and get these guys a chance

(01:23:38):
to watch the film and learn from it.

Speaker 2 (01:23:39):
Yeah, there you go. Al Golden. If he's gonna work
in airplane references every time he talks with the media,
then he's gonna win me over. Not gonna lie to you.
And now I don't care if the defense is any good.
If if Al Golden's gonna humor me with references to
my favorite films, We're we're gonna be just fine. Twenty
eight minutes after five o'clock. I have not put a

(01:24:00):
poll question out there on Twitter because we've had a
billion things going on today, but we will figure that out.
We'll also preview the upcoming Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown. Its
opener is tomorrow. It features a great rivalry that is
coming up, and I will do my best because we
also have Tony Pike to squeeze in a phone call
or two on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports.

Twenty eight away from six. This is ESPN fifteen thirty
Sports headlines in just a second. The twenty twenty five
area high school football season is getting underway this weekend,
and the crown jewel is always the skyline Chile Crosstown Showdown.
The first game in that event features a great rivalry
in an awesome setting. It's East Central at Lawrenceburg. The

(01:25:26):
Trojans head coaches Jake Miners, who the night before a
game joins us, It's awesome to have you coach. How
are you I'm doing well? How are you doing I'm
doing very well. Kickoff is a little bit more than
twenty four hours away. What is life like as a
coach when you're this close to the season opener?

Speaker 13 (01:25:45):
Well, you know, first of all the hayz and varn
as they say, you know, you spent all summer kind
of preparing for this moment. You know, all the scattery reports,
all that sort of stuff as you've been preparing.

Speaker 3 (01:25:57):
For this moment.

Speaker 13 (01:25:57):
So really the next few just kind of get quiet,
which is an interesting deal as a head coach. Very
few times throughout your calendar year is life quiet and
so life kids quiet. You just kind of, you know,
reflect on where you've been so far. I hope you've
taken care of everything.

Speaker 9 (01:26:15):
You dot your teas across our sorry, across your teas,
dot your eyes and uh, you know, uh, and you
go out and you perform well to open up the season.

Speaker 2 (01:26:26):
If you were going to get that eyes and teas
thing messed up. As an English teacher, I was going
to call you out.

Speaker 7 (01:26:30):
I'm an English teacher. I know, I am an English teacher.

Speaker 13 (01:26:33):
What am I doing?

Speaker 2 (01:26:35):
What have you learned about your team over the last
couple of weeks leading up to the opener?

Speaker 10 (01:26:39):
Yeah?

Speaker 13 (01:26:40):
I think we we just learned how well our football
IQ is we've really spent a lot of the off
season kind of building our football i Q kind of
the game within the game, UH, situational football, and I
feel like we've really had a lot of growth this year.
Moving into this year, we bring back a really experienced group,
UH that experience a tough AUSO at the end of

(01:27:00):
the season, you know, something that we have an experience
in a few years. So just kind of regroup, uh,
talk through some situational football, and hopefully we can correct
some of those issues moving forward into this year.

Speaker 2 (01:27:12):
Like situational football, you're talking about like specific situations in
a game. Give me an example of something you might
have worked on one day during practice.

Speaker 13 (01:27:20):
Yeah, I think just challenging our quarterback a little bit.
Our quarterback is coming back for a second year starting.
You know, you get a certain look and it's third
and four and you have a play call that's called
and it doesn't look very good against that front. Him
having the ability to check into a different play, into

(01:27:41):
a play that that we have talked about that we
want against that front and to go out and execute
that play.

Speaker 7 (01:27:46):
You know, that's something that.

Speaker 13 (01:27:47):
We've worked really hard on that we've challenged Nolan Maple,
our quarterback with and he's got the football IQ to
be able to do it. So at the high school
game when you're when you're working with young men, that
could be a challenge, know for them to have the
confidence to go out there and to make a check
and then to go out and execute the play.

Speaker 2 (01:28:06):
This is the first time in a couple of years,
and you referenced this where you're not coming off winning
a state championship. You move up to five A in Indiana.
Last year you finished the season the way you did,
a tough postseason loss, but you guys were young last year.
So how do you build upon the experience your kids
got playing that first season in five A.

Speaker 7 (01:28:24):
Yeah, five A was a new world for us.

Speaker 13 (01:28:27):
Our school has never been bumped up to five A
doe the success factor in the state of Indiana. So
we're putting in a new environment against bigger schools, you know,
really trying to challenge ourselves and see what we're able
to do. And we end up having a successful year.
You know, we went eight and four, We won a
sexual championship. I lost of stuff won in the regional
final to the eventual state champion Decatur Central. But what

(01:28:51):
I think we did is we were young last year
and we made some inny experienced plays when times got tough,
and that's that's why we put so much stock into
that situational type of football moving forward. It really reminds
me of our team in twenty twenty one that we
had a tough loss in the regional finals and the
four A playoffs, and then we were able to put

(01:29:12):
things together coming back the following year because just them
going through that experience. You can't stimulate that experience and
that tough loss, and you know, I don't have to
do a whole lot of motivation as a head coach
that these guys motivate themselves. They become hungry and they
know what they're capable of, So it's just trying to
put the pieces together. I think last year the one

(01:29:34):
positive that we took away that we knew that we
could compete in five A and so we were right
there with some of the top teams. So now it's
we have that confidence level of knowing that we can
go out and compete with the biggest schools.

Speaker 2 (01:29:47):
Jake Miners is with his head coach at East Central
East Central, Lawrence and Lawrenceburg kick off the skyline Chile
Crosstown Showdown tomorrow. The game is at Lawrenceburg. You're not
supposed to talk about the other schools then, but that
is one of the coolest settings for a high school
football game that your kids will be a part of
tomorrow with that stadium right off Round fifty.

Speaker 13 (01:30:08):
It really is.

Speaker 3 (01:30:09):
It really is.

Speaker 13 (01:30:09):
It's one of the cooler venues because you know in
the state of Indiana, it sits down in a hole
right off Route fifty. You can hank your horn, people
can yell at it from the street. You know, it'll
be a huge, huge crowd to Deerbroyne County School's going
at it. Where we locker, we actually have to walk
right through their tailgating section called the Jungle. So it's

(01:30:31):
a really, really cool atmosphere. You know, it's hard to explain,
you know it put it in the words, but it's
one of the cooler environments for high school football that
a young man can go play in. And our guys
are looking forward to it. You know, our seniors have
been down there a couple of times that they enjoy
the environment. Lawrenceburgh puts on a great game day atmosphere.

(01:30:53):
So you know, it's what high school football should be.
It's two communities getting together, cheering on their teams like crazy,
and two good football teams, two top ten football teams
in their respective classes, going at each other.

Speaker 2 (01:31:05):
All right, before I let you run, I'm gonna mention
something that is probably only interesting to me, but I'm
going to bring it up nonetheless. So you know, you
do this and you get game notes right at the
professional level, at the college level, and at the high
school level. You know the game notes, you typically don't
expect them to look like you might get from you know,
the Cincinnati Bengals. Whoever does East Central's game notes is incredible.

(01:31:27):
I've never seen such thorough game notes and statistical breakdowns
of a high school football team. So hats off to
who is ever in charge of that.

Speaker 13 (01:31:36):
Well, I can tell you his name is Andrew Shaver,
and the guy is incredible. I do not pay him
enough money, that's a fact. He's incredible. He he comes
up with stats that I didn't even know existed. And
I'm a pretty big football fan. I follow the NFL,
I followed the college game, and I didn't even know
they existed. So he does an incredible job. He puts

(01:31:57):
together a preview for us, does a media guy and
then every week puts together a preview for it. And
I tell him, too easy. He could did these things
down for us a little bit, you know, to kind
of give us the highlights. But you know, Andrew's the
best in the business. He does an incredible job, and
I'm happy.

Speaker 2 (01:32:15):
He's a part of us. Yeah, Well give it up
to him for us, because I was impressive. I legitimately
thought I was like reading something from Ohio State or
UC or something so very cool or Indiana University. I
guess I should say East Central and Lawrenceburg kick off
the twenty twenty five Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown. The game
tomorrow night kicks off at seven o'clock at Lawrenceburg High School. Coach,

(01:32:36):
best of luck tomorrow and all season long. We appreciate
the time.

Speaker 13 (01:32:41):
Thank you. I appreciate you guys having me on anytime.

Speaker 2 (01:32:43):
That's Jake Minor is the head coach at East Central.
They're at Lawrenceburg tomorrow. If you do not know of
what I speak, if you ever drive on Route fifty,
they're in Lawrenceburg. The stadium is like right there, it is,
and I went to a game seventeen or eighteen at
that venue twenty seventeen or eighteen. That is one of

(01:33:05):
the coolest places I've ever watched a high school football game.
It's it's a really cool setting. So Tomorrow night, first
game of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown at seven pm.

for the Bengals today before they take on the Colts
on Saturday. Of course, no players who really matter all
that much are going to plan in that game. Among
the guys working on the rehab field today, DJ Turner, Lucas,
Patrick Miles, Murphy, Cody Ford, Andre Yoshavas One o'clock on Saturday,
live from the venue originally known as Paul Brown Stadium
on ESPN fifteen thirty Off day for the Reds. They

(01:33:47):
start a three game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks tomorrow.
The Mets right now lead the Nationals three too. Washington
has scored twice in the fifth inning. I'm sorry, no
once in the fourth and once in the fifth, and
they've got the bases loaded with two outs, so New
York clinging to a three to two lead. I mentioned
that because the Mets right now have a one game

(01:34:08):
lead over the Reds in the hunt for the last
wildcard spot. Florence takes on the Mississippi mud Monsters tonight.
UC basketball. The Louisville game is set for Heritage Bank Center.
They announced that date. It'll be Friday, November the twenty first.
DeAndre Yedlin has been traded to a Real Salt Lake
by FC Cincinnati in exchange for three hundred thousand dollars

(01:34:30):
in general allocation money, and FC Cincinnati's home game against
Orlando City has been moved to Sunday night, September the
twenty eighth. It was scheduled for the night before. All right,
eighteen away from six o'clock, Tarren, howe are we on
time right now? We still have about six minutes here.

(01:34:50):
We got like said, we can talk to some of
the folks right now. We can. All right, good, we'll
do that. John in Boston, you're on ESPN fifteen thirty. John,
how are you good?

Speaker 8 (01:34:58):
Mo?

Speaker 2 (01:34:59):
How are you doing well?

Speaker 8 (01:35:01):
All right?

Speaker 11 (01:35:01):
So a couple of things just to get caught up
on is I look at the Bengals coaching staff, and
you know, it railed against Scott Peters because I saw
her in here last year with the Patriots. In one
year as an offensive line coach, the Patriots with thirty
first in offensive line win rate. So now he goes
to the team with the thirty second rank offensive win rates.
So I don't know what you're expecting with that, right,

(01:35:24):
So that's like, you know, the boy, we're getting the
blind And then as far as Jerry Montgomery on the
defensive line, he also was coaching with the New England
Patriots and their defense was horrible last year. I was
in the first game against the Bengals when the Bengals
looked as they were drunk. I mean they literally looked
like they weren't even ready to play. But Montgomery was
also the d line coach at Green Bay and if

(01:35:46):
you remember the twenty nineteen NFC Championship game, the forty
nine Ers averaged eleven yards per carrying that game, Jimmy
Garoppolo threw five passes because the Packers could not stop
the run, and Jerry Montgomery's responsible for that as the
d line coach. You've got these two cast offs who
no one really wanted, who are being paid by the
Patriots and in the case the Peters, also the Browns.

(01:36:07):
It just makes absolutely no sense. And the other thing, too,
mo that you keep hearing about at the national level
is that the Bengals can't pay other players because Joe Burrow,
Jamar Chase, and See Higgins make too much money. Well,
those three guys make the same amount of money that
Jalen Hurts, Jalen Waddle, and aj Brown make.

Speaker 5 (01:36:27):
It's the same.

Speaker 11 (01:36:29):
And Joe Burrow said that last year at the Super Bowl,
he said, the Eagles are able to pull it off.
Why can't we? Well, they draft a lot better than
the Bengals, because the Bengals have six scouts and the
Eagles probably have forty six scouts. And I'm at the
point with the Bengals just by the Athalon Draft Guide
and throw bots at it, maybe you be more successful

(01:36:49):
with that. It's just unfortunate that and frustrating as a
Borrough fan that you're wasting the prime of the best
quarterback in football.

Speaker 2 (01:36:56):
Yeah, I mean everything you said. I agree with the
fact that they paid Joe, Jamar and t I mean,
it doesn't excuse how they played last year. It doesn't
excuse It's not an excuse for them to not be
able to build a roster this season. There is room,
There is room to pay some of these guys, and
their recent issues have had more to do with their
inability to get good cheap labor. The draft provides cheap

(01:37:20):
labor in this league every year. The Bengals haven't found
a lot of value in that cheap labor. That has
nothing to do with who you've signed, That has nothing
to do with what you're paying wide receivers. That has
everything to do with your ability to identify and select
the right players in the draft and develop them.

Speaker 7 (01:37:38):
Yeah, without question.

Speaker 11 (01:37:39):
And again they have thirty million dollars available in cap space,
so they could give an extension and give more money
to Trey Henderson, and they could bring in the guide
that they had in this week to help that offensive line.
And then I think you're on your way to being
a legit Super Bowl contender without making your quarterback have
to be Houdini every week of the season.

Speaker 7 (01:37:59):
It's just really he is very, very prussuring.

Speaker 2 (01:38:01):
It just feels like thank you, John, as always, it
just it feels like, you know, last year we said
it off and they're they're asking Joe Burrow to do
everything this year. Right now, it feels like the way
this team is built, they're going to be asking Joe
Burrow to do a lot more than other quarterbacks in
this league. Randy in Indiana, you're on ESPN fifteen thirty
high Randy.

Speaker 3 (01:38:22):
Hello, Ma, how are you?

Speaker 2 (01:38:23):
I'm well man, what's up?

Speaker 3 (01:38:25):
Good?

Speaker 14 (01:38:26):
Well, I give the central coach all studos, but I'm
a Franklin County Wildcat, so we're in the same division.
So you know, good luck to you, and I hope
your quarterback doesn't do really good.

Speaker 3 (01:38:39):
So we'll start off with that.

Speaker 2 (01:38:42):
Okay, I'll pass it on to coach minors.

Speaker 14 (01:38:45):
Oh, don't worry.

Speaker 3 (01:38:46):
Yeah, he's listening to you.

Speaker 14 (01:38:48):
He's listening. You don't get on your show and he
doesn't listen. So there's two things there. Oh, now there's
three things I gotta ask. One, why is John from
Boston coming in and talk to us like an english
Man and telling us how to run their damn team?
So that's one.

Speaker 2 (01:39:07):
Well, he likes he likes Joe Burrow, and does he
he roots for the Bengals, and I don't think his
observations were off base.

Speaker 14 (01:39:14):
Well a little bit, yes and no. Okay, one I
got to ask a question because nobody, because I've listened
to the national media, I've listened to the local media,
I've listened to your podcast. I've listened to everybody here
and this and that on Trey Henderson his contract status
the Bengals that they've they've flat out said they've all

(01:39:36):
agreed on the money. Okay, So if they agree on
like full guarantees on the first year and then hey,
play it out that if he starts the second year,
does he still get his salary and gets hurnt through
game eight? Does he still get his salary?

Speaker 2 (01:39:57):
Well, if he's on the roster to start the season, yes.

Speaker 14 (01:40:01):
Okay, Well, then why is the guarantee so important? Because
if you're really, really good and they're giving you thirty
two thirty three million, which I'm guessing that's.

Speaker 3 (01:40:12):
Probably where it's at. You not mean you and I
work in the real world.

Speaker 14 (01:40:18):
If they sit there and say, no, I'm going to
give you a five year contract, I'm going to guarantee
you your first two years of salary. Don't worry about it.
You're you're done, You're good. But if your ratings really
suck after three four years, uh yeah, we might catch you.

Speaker 2 (01:40:36):
Well, it would depend on what the structure of other
people in my business were. And I think Trey's perspective is,
you know, the Bengals had this long standing policy where
they wouldn't guarantee after the first year. They stepped out
of that policy for Joe Burrow, and understandably so he's
Joe Burrow. They then did it again with Burrow, right,
but they talking quarterback, but they talking about an elite

(01:40:57):
wide right. But Andy, I'm just trying to give you
what Trey's perspective is. Trey's perspective is, you've stepped out
of your policy twice with Joe and Jamar. Do it
with me, because I'm as good at my position as
those guys are at theirs. I would love to keep going,
but I gotta run. We gotta get Tony Pike in, Okay,
be you baddy? All right, Thanks very much. That's the

(01:41:18):
perspective Tony Pike will give us perspective of what Al
Golden had to say.

Speaker 4 (01:41:21):
Next Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic.

Speaker 1 (01:42:06):
It's Skyline time on your official home of the Cincinnati Bengals,
ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (01:42:15):
Hi Tony Pike one more time. On the last day
of training camp. Bengals with their final workout before they
take on the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday. Tony Al Golden
today pretty much said, look, you want to talk about
the defense, point the finger at me. We're not asking
to do much. We've dumbed it down. I'm paraphrasing him here.
I don't get it. I don't get it from this perspective.

(01:42:38):
I understand they dumb it down during the preseason, but
if they can't get the dumbed down version of the defense,
how are they supposed to get it when things get
more complex? Is that how you read his comments?

Speaker 11 (01:42:49):
Yeah, I am completely completely confused by them for what
you said, Mo, but also the fact of the offseason.
There's been an emphasis on what the preseason football games,
and now you're saying, well, the preseason games haven't really mattered.
It's what we've been doing in practice. We're happy with
how this team is practicing. In my opinion, if you
dumb things down, then I shouldn't watch a game and

(01:43:11):
think that guys are getting dominated in one on ones.
I shouldn't think that they look at step slow. I
shouldn't see the airs of linebackers running into each other,
or defensive lineman missing their gap responsibilities. If everything is
supposed to be dumbed down, so those two things, to me,
they don't add up, and it leaves for an uneasy conversation.

(01:43:32):
Now when you start to look at going forward of
where this team is going to be, when you talk
about going to Cleveland, is out Golden going to be
able to outscheme the deficiencies of this defense because clearly
running base defense with the personnel they have isn't doing it.
They cannot win the one on one battles. They've not
shown the ability to tackle. They've shown zero resistance in

(01:43:53):
the run game or getting after the passer. I just
don't think the messaging matches what I've seen on the field.

Speaker 2 (01:43:59):
Would good buy it if they had more players I
felt like could be counted on sure?

Speaker 8 (01:44:05):
Right now?

Speaker 11 (01:44:05):
Who who on this team outside of what is remarkable
to me Shamar Stewart, who we didn't even know if
was going to be on the team. Who on this
defense right now?

Speaker 13 (01:44:14):
Can you say you know what?

Speaker 11 (01:44:15):
I know I can rely on that guy. I don't
know Demetrius Knight's going to be a starter. I know
Aarren Burks was getting in today because he was on
the reheab field. I don't know who your starters at
linebacker are. I haven't seen anything from bj Hill because
he's been in and out of practices. I don't know
how much you can rely on him. Osai has shown
me nothing. Miles Murphy has shown absolutely zero. I just

(01:44:36):
don't know who you you can say, okay, I know
for a fact I know what I'm getting out of
that player. I don't know if they have more than
maybe two or three of those guys.

Speaker 2 (01:44:46):
That's our guy, Tony Pike. He is back tomorrow for
since he three to sixty at noon and for our
lead training camp reports at three forty five, four forty five,
and five forty five. Don't forget we have the Bengals
and Colts on Saturday at one o'clock live on ESPN
fifteen thirty. Tony joins us on the race Ain Clair
Roofing hotline. We are done. Show is over. Back at

(01:45:06):
it tomorrow at three oh five. Thank you for listening,
and thanks to Tarren Bland for producing. Have a great night.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station
