Speaker 1 (00:00):
Down to fifty three players.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
So it's it's one of the more chaotic days that
we deal with, certainly one of the more chaotic days
that folks like Paul Dander Junior deal with. He is here,
So am I? So are you a malegar? This is
ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank you for listening. Paul is here,
and we have a billion things to discuss. He's gotta

(00:23):
fly and so Zach Taylor's going to talk at four fifteen.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
We'll have that for you live.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Paul's got his job to do, so he is going
to bolt in just about thirty minutes. Todd Frazier is
going to be on this show a little bit later
on at three thirty five, and our hourly season preview
reports continued, Tony Pike is going to join us at
three forty five. We have a lot of ground to cover.
Paul is here. The Growler podcast Balds Don't Lie. I

(00:49):
think today on your podcast I talked about Jamar Chase
for the last time for quite a while.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Did you yeah, let's hope, Well, maybe don't hope. I
don't know. I don't know when and if there's something new.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
When there's something new to report, we will report you.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
When and if there's something new, I will discuss this
Sunday was the last piece of new business we've had,
so there's nothing else to say.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
And some might argue the most important piece of business
down question, outside of him standing in front of us
tomorrow and being like, hey guys, yeah, I know, sorry
about all that.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
I'm good though, you know, I.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Mean nice to be back. Yeah that's that we haven't
heard from him yet. Sure, but yes, no, him being back,
being a full participant, we'll continuing to do so. No
you know, stiff knees, hurt back, tweaked foot, you know,
to try to pretend none of that's happening.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
All on the up and up.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Good news, the most important news probably that you've been
searching for in that situation for a while.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Right, So Jamara is back and if something new happens,
we'll discuss. I don't think we're going to spend any
time on him today because there is a lot going on.
There's a lot going on. We'll find out officially at
four o'clock with the Bengals have done. Do we want
to talk about what's kind of been leagued to what's
out there? That's fine, all right, So I think the
most significant thing for me is the Bengals kept the linebacker.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
They should keep big News.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, yeah, no, I think this was in you know,
to me, it's not even a surprise. And I don't
mean that because I mean, what is the guy we're
talking about? Yeah, moo Jong made Look what he did
in preseason was win a job.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
I mean, and you watched him and you said there's
space for that guy.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Yeah, and they had a space linebacker anyway, Right, that's
the type of player you want. It's a type of
player that you have seen this franchise find over the years.
I can go through undrafted free agent linebackers that have
had very nice careers, whether it be focused on special
teams or giving you more a guy like Vinnie Ray,
you know, like it was an undrafted guy who ends
up staying in the building for a half a decade

(02:57):
and it is a contributor. I mean in different ways.
Vonte's perfic, but like you never know, and specific especially
at linebackers, seems like you can you can find guys
and he earned it. So you want to see that.
If guys come in and prove they belong, then they
should belong. That's the whole point, no matter drafted or not.
And that was to me, that was an easy one.

(03:18):
I thought it was kind of a layup decision. Yeah,
I did not even need the third preseason game.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
No, I'm midway through that game against the Bears, I'm
going like, yeah, there's room for that guy on this team.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Mm hmm, right, yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
I mean certain guys, they just look like football players.
And the reviews, you know, when you go back to Wisconsin,
he was slow and maybe he didn't love the size,
But you go back to Wisconsin and I'm gonna guess
that Zach Taylor made a called old friend Luke Figgle,
and they'll they rave.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
I mean, the guy's a football player.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
The guy understands it, he gets it, he's a leader,
he's all these things that you want a football player
to beat. And he comes here and well, I'll be
dog God, turns out he is a football player. Go figure, right,
I mean that's that All those types of things they play,
especially when you're looking for a position that is so
based on understanding the game and instincts and and understanding

(04:08):
how to win on special teams.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Has anything been reported or leaked that you're willing to
talk about now that you would deem surprising.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
I don't know that there's anything. Is Trey Hill surprising.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
That he's let go?

Speaker 2 (04:25):
No?

Speaker 3 (04:26):
No, I mean I remember saying I was in the
press box on Thursday night afterwards and we're all kind
of talking through our own fifty threes, and I'm like,
am I.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Really gonna put Trey Hill on this team?

Speaker 3 (04:38):
And it's just because it just it didn't feel like
once Matt Lee was established as the backup center. You're saying,
why am I doing this? Like, I don't you don't
feel like you're gonna have a problem getting him onto
the practice squad. So if injuries happen, you have somebody
in the building, and that's really what this is all about.
And so if there's a surprise, I guess maybe that's one,

(05:01):
But I don't even really that was kind of a
could go either way on whatever they feel. Are they
just want to make sure they have that offensive line
depth or are they going to use those positions elsewhere?
And you know that's the one that it looks like
they're just going to use depth elsewhere.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
As you have broken down the fifty three, what's the
most difficult decision.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
What the heck you're going to do with defensive tackle?
I mean we and and really all the defensive line
decisions beyond your you know, your big too deep because
you have the Miles Murphy and the McKinley Jackson decisions
on whether you're going to put them on ir return
and they missed the first four weeks, or you are

(05:41):
going to say, okay, well I think they can be
back by week three against Washington or week four? And
and what does that do? Does that open you up
to add? Are you know there? They have a couple
of guys. They brought in a guy like Carlos Davis.
Does he do enough He's played a little bit in
the league to just give you that big body run
stop or that you can put in there in a

(06:02):
few small situations as a sub package or be there
as a backup if you need it. You know, we
talked a lot about not having a replacement for DJ
Reader and they don't have certainly a body type replacement
for DJ Reader that's available to them right now. So
what are they going to do with those injuries? Who's
going to take over that defensive tackle spot? How aggressively

(06:22):
are they interested in filling that from other rosters. You know,
they didn't really get done what they hoped to get
done in free agency at that position. This is the
next time you kind of look back to that and say,
is there somebody they may be kind of reviewing in
free agency that became available, or is another team likes

(06:44):
a young guy and maybe he's available now to be acquired.
If you're willing to give up something, perhaps that's something.
How aggressive are they going to be to try to
secure that spot a little bit more or just go
with what they have and try to make pieces fit
and ease it together with band aids. Really, in the
short term, I think that room and how it all

(07:05):
shakes out is certainly kind of interesting to see how
where they land.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
You wrote about the Bengals extensive history of late summer trades.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
Yeah, right, they don't. They don't really trade at all
except for on draft Day and really this weekend. Yeah,
this is this is when.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
They do it. Now's the time.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
So based on that history and based on where they
could use some players from other teams, I mean, do
we do we think one could be in the offing?

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Yeah, I mean the one we've been talking about right,
I mean, and that the league's kind of talking about
a little bit now that it's Denver sort of put
it out there, Hey, we're trading p Ryan, which I
don't know there was a huge secret that that might
be where this lands.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Right, But are they gonna cut him by four o'clock?

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Well, that's just it. I mean, it's it's our teams
willing to call their bluff. Okay, all right, and so
and say, yeah, well we know you're cutting them. I
don't believe another team's gonna trade for meinds me of
the Little Columns situation, remember where everyone's like, oh, they
got it, they got it, they should they should trade
for him. Yeah, And the Bangles were like, we don't

(08:10):
think anybody wants them but us. And so they sat
there and they waited, and they eventually ended up signing
as a free agent to a better deal and it
worked out great. And well the deal did because the
deal that they got him it worked out.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
But the bottom line is, you know, they they can
sit back and say, we don't think anybody is going
to get him, and we think that if he gets
let go, he'll want to come back here. And if
that is, if they believe that to be true, and
that's the case, they would do that and probably save
themselves some coin in the process because his contract is
a decent size. I mean, he's he counted four and

(08:44):
a half mil against the Denver cap, which is part
of what He's not going to be there anymore. So
they're working on what would be the best way to
do that. But I don't think there's any secret that
they could use him here, whether it would be just
as a one for one replacement for travy On Williams,
or adding a fourth running back to a room, which
is a traditional number that they have kept. They really

(09:05):
only have three right now, so you know, and you
know he can play on third downs. You know he
can play in two minutes. You know Joe Burrow trusts him,
and so those three things are huge boxes to check off,
and they can choose how they want to do it.
For me, I think they probably would just say one
for one of Travon and just still keep three running
backs and maybe keep Travon in the building on a

(09:25):
practice squad. But to be determined on how they view that,
But I think that's the the obvious trade that you
could see happening would be one to bring in.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
If it's not.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Sa Ryan is the running back, Trayvon Williams is the
third running back, Trayvon Williams Or is there anybody else
that you could you could imagine them bringing in assuming
they're available.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
Yeah, I mean, I think there's a there's more than
a few veteran running backs that have kind of been
thrown out there now and that you could see, Hey,
maybe they bring you value in the kicker turn game.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
You know, I'm gonna have to try to learn it
what Nawad.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Knew tried Minnesota understand, but you know, maybe you could
see somebody like that who was looked looked pretty like
he could be pretty fun as a returner in this
new news setup and could bring you that value and
and maybe bring you a little bit more as a
backup rningment that you could work in. I don't know,
maybe that's something that you're talking about looking and adding

(10:20):
somebody like that to the room or even to your
practice squad. But there's Matt, there's there's a there's a
number of veterans that are out there, so they could
I think they're going to be assessing that situation.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
I think outside of Moss and Brown.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
They're open to about anything and they're looking so I
think that's a position you could you could see in
addition to or maybe Trevion Stage. But I think they
they would be very open to adding somebody else. Paul
Danner Jr. Covering the Bengals for the Athletic dot Com.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
Also you could check out The Growler, the podcast he
does multiple times per week. We did a tired of
talking about Jamar Chase podcast today, Bald's Don't Lie.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Yeah, I yelled a little bit. You yelled a little bit.
You were animated. I liked that. Sorry, man, it was fun.
These things build.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
Oftentimes I'm the guy doing the yelling. It was fun
being kind of on the receiving end of it. Yeah,
It's just it was great. It was time it was
I could tell it was CATHARTI a little bit.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
I was here for it.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
Followed Paul on x at Paul Dayner Junior. He's here
for one more segment. Zach Taylor is going to talk
at four fifteen. We'll have that for you live. We
have a lot of ground to cover between now and six.
Tony Pike's gonna join us in thirty minutes. Spend a
few minutes chatting with Todd Frasier as well. At three
thirty five on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 5 (11:36):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic.

Speaker 6 (11:40):
From the UC Health Traffic Center at the UC Gardner
Neuroscience Institute, you can access the leading.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Cut down time cut Down Day, got to get the
roster down to fifty three. I went into the preseason
games wanting to focus on offensive line depth, and we
were going to see a lot of those guys and
I feel like from a pure depth perspective, it passed.
They passed with flying colors. Yeah, I liked a lot

(12:08):
of what I saw.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
Boy talk about underrated, surprising storyline of the preseason, what started.
You were a little nervous after that first game, But
it turns out you just needed to switch a few
of those guys out, yes, and put a few of
the other guys in and your latest crop of Okay,
can you do it?

Speaker 1 (12:26):
Turned out they can and they did it pretty well.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
Jackson, Kirkland, Matt Lee, even Nate Gilliam if you're into
Nate Gilliam was giving you a lot of solid pass protection.
And they've you know, they have shifted into this body
type of these massive humans and that are big anchoring
pass protectors in a way from some of the other

(12:50):
types of body types that they kind of were.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
I mean, they we know at this point, but.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
I think it's showing itself where maybe you're getting some
players that better fit your system, utilizing it, running it,
and maybe it looks a little bit better. Specifically they
can pass protect and that's really the whole point here.
They're like, look, just can you just get more people
that can keep borrow upright like the rest of it?
Figure it out. Okay, if they can do both, that's cool,

(13:18):
but you better be able to do line one. And
you know, Kirkland Lee specifically as the two guys that
really asserted themselves, I think make you feel a lot
better about where that's out. I'm curious to see when
Frank Pollack sits down, you know, next Monday and lays
out the depth chart. Who would be now that you know,

(13:40):
if a Mariusmims obviously isn't back, whatever, where's Kirkland Is
he your first? Is he your swing tackle for the opener?
He might've earned that, Yeah, Like I think he played
well and Pollock really likes him or is he your
first guard. I mean, you know, Cody Ford sort of
had that spot we thought, but Kirkland has played well

(14:01):
enough to make maybe maybe he's next up, even at
guard where he was originally playing in the first place.
They were just kicking him out the tackle to check
for flexibility and because he had done it in college
and he did really well.

Speaker 1 (14:11):
So I'm curious to see how.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
They end up viewing that that group that's behind the starters,
and it may come to pass where that matters a
lot later in the season, but for now, really encouraging
stuff to see both of those guys where if somebody
goes down, at least you feel like you have some
pretty solid preseason tape you can look back on and say,
I think there's a chance that it doesn't fall apart.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
So I like all that depth. I'm encouraged by that depth.
Should I should I feel okay about what's gonna happen
Week one, play one at.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
Right tackle, Yeah, I think so sure about that. I
think you made a face.

Speaker 3 (14:46):
You made a face before he gave me the answer
face people make when it's August and we're talking about
Trent Brown.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
I mean, look, I yes, I think you should. I
think you should.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
I think you should feel okay that by the time
you get young, we're still like ten days.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Right, Like, there's still plenty of time to get it going.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
I feel like, is he gonna be able to get
through an entire game and be all the way up
ready to go? I wouldn't probably bet that he does
one hundred percent of the snaps.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
Isn't that like the baseline sort of thing we're looking
for here? I get through the heads in the heat.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
I mean, he's still been rotating with last we saw
YEA was still doing having to rotate out at the
end of some series, the last open practice, so that's part.

Speaker 1 (15:33):
Of the process. So he's probably he's getting closer.

Speaker 3 (15:37):
But I do think that you should feel okay about him,
and when he's in there, I think you should feel comfortable.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
He's kind of a bit of a proven commandity.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
I think you feel okay, he's got a track record
finishing the game is going to be the thing. But
you know, I think a lot of guys have that
in the first game too. He would be the first
on that list. Yeah, Okay, that might not have been
the most but it's inducing. But that's where I swear
to that.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
You're just so giddy that like the nonsensical part of
the off season is over and we have football games
that you're just saying really nice things about everybody.

Speaker 3 (16:13):
I'm trying to, right, it's say nice things about everybody season,
because you know what happens in twelve days, right, we
don't say nice things about people as much.

Speaker 1 (16:21):
We mostly, In fact, we'll probably focus on the things
that aren't as nice.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
Do you believe the Bengals have screen passes that they
didn't use in that game against the Colts?

Speaker 1 (16:31):
How could there be more? There can't be? Yeah, I
think they've literally I think they've got a lot more.

Speaker 2 (16:36):
Every conceivable screen pass that exists in an offensive playbook
had to be on display in that Bengals Colts game.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
What about well, first of all, you've got tight end screens. Yeah,
that I think that you could start to see a
little bit more of that. Right then, what about jumbo
tight end screen? You know whens is back, put memes
out there as the blocking tight end in position, put
him in motion to him.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
Oh, sign me up for that, Yes, sign me up.
That's what I'm saying. That's what we I mean, not
not on like third and two, you know, in a
critical stage of the game. But if the options are
that or a shovel pass, you know what I'm taking.
I'm taking a Marius mems Marius shovel pass. What if

(17:24):
he comes in, I don't know. Man, that's too far. Yeah,
that's taking it a little bit too far.

Speaker 3 (17:30):
That's that's that's about only thing left on the screen
pass editing or floor at this point after last year.

Speaker 1 (17:35):
Yeah, but I think they're going back to it.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
It's gonna be a big part of the offense sure,
as it should be, and it was in the second
half of the season.

Speaker 1 (17:41):
Less it fails them. So so there is we have
like a minute here there.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
To me is what I'm maybe most interested in watching
unfolds starting a week from Sunday. Something you and I
have talked about a lot. The integration of what they
used to do on offense with Joe and the shotgun
and how they played toward the end of last season
and how they meshed everything this summer.

Speaker 1 (18:03):
What does that look like when the real games actually start.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
Yeah, and we may only see a small portion of it,
because I do think it's gonna be a week to
week depending on the opponent type of thing. But I
do think you'll see more motion. I do think you'll
see more guys lining up in different spots. I do
think you'll see more of the screen game, or of
the under center game, all of that kind of little bit,
more of the bells and whistles, eye candy, utilizing guys
like Gisicky specifically where they're outside and they're inside and

(18:29):
just watching, trying to get matchups and obviously try to
utilize Jamar Chase into a favorable matchups as much as possible.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
Yeah, who is practicing and is with the team this year?
That's correct? Very good? All right, I know you have
a lot going on. Yeah, thank you.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
Balds Don't Lie podcast today, the Growler podcast. And then
are you doing anything post cut down? Yeah, we'll have
something up. I'll I'll have something up in the morning
with Dave will kind of be reaction. We'll get everything
it went down today.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
Very good, and read his work the Athletic dot Com.
We'll see you next Tuesday. Looking forward to it. Yes, sir,
it's three thirty.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Todd Fraser joins us next on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati
Sports Station.

Speaker 5 (19:07):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic.

Speaker 6 (19:12):
From the UC Health Traffic Center at the UC Gardner
Neuroscience Institute on Thursday.

Speaker 2 (19:18):
Remember Thursday's game is a five to ten first pitch
because there's a postgame Thomas rec concert. So the series
finale will coincide with a Todd Fraser signing. He is
going to be visiting the Hall of Fame on Thursday
for a pair of special autograph sessions from three forty
five to four forty five inside the Reds Hall of
Fame m Museum and then from five to six and

(19:41):
remember the games at five to ten on Thursday, from
five to six at the Hall of Fame shop inside
the ballpark, which is just inside that gate down the
first baseline.

Speaker 1 (19:51):
Todd has been busy.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
Just got done calling the Little League World Series and
headed back to town to hang out sign autographs on Thursday.

Speaker 1 (19:57):
It is always good to have him with us. Tod,
what's going on?

Speaker 7 (20:01):
Hey, guys, how we don't? I mean, everything's wild? I'll complaint.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
Uh, yeah, I mentioned you called the Little League World Series.
You've done this for a while. Obviously, your history with
that event as a player has been well documented. That
event seems like it's an absolute blast to call.

Speaker 7 (20:18):
Yeah, it's it's honestly, you think about it, like when
I played there and they asked me to come back,
It's a no brainer.

Speaker 8 (20:25):
Man.

Speaker 7 (20:25):
Kids from all ages, adults from all ages. It's it's
mecca of young kid baseball, and there's nothing better. What
is it like?

Speaker 2 (20:36):
Walk me through the process. You're obviously calling the games
differently than you you would be when you're calling major
league games and obviously recently obviously doing some some work
for the Yankees. Walk me through the difference in preparing
and executing the broadcast when it's kids versus guys who
are getting paid.

Speaker 7 (20:53):
Yeah, it's interesting. It's a really good question. Now you
try and find the good in everybody, whether it's you know,
you're doing the Yanks or you're, you know, doing Little League.
But the storylines are just incredible. You know, you got
you know, guys that three brothers coaching, You had triplets
play for Australia, you got another girl play this year.

(21:14):
You know the stories the guy the guy said his
favorite character or favorite famous person he loves is Walt Disney,
Like who says stuff like that, which is just incredible.
And you find storylines or the kids from Venezuela. I
think you might have signed a deal already with a
major league team, So the storylines are blown up more

(21:35):
and they're they're wonderful, like there's no bad things that
can happen there, and if they do, they find a
way to shut it down quick and we move on. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
No, it's it's fun to watch. You were obviously also
a part of the coverage of the Home Run Derby
this year. It's impossible to talk about that event without
referencing you in twenty fifteen. So you flash ahead to Thursday,
You're at the Reds Hall of Fame. You're gonna meet
a lot of fans. Is there any one of them
that you enter? Mis Pate says they weren't there in
July of twenty fifteen to watch you win the Home

(22:04):
Run Derby.

Speaker 7 (22:06):
No, I mean every time that time comes around, I
get all the love from Cincy, which I really appreciate
because you know, that's where I did it, that's why
I played for and that's what I was trying to
win for that city, and they give me all the
love in the world, they give me the respect, and
anytime I can go back there, which I'll be there tomorrow.
I really can't wait. It's exciting times. And there'll be

(22:30):
a bobblehead too, so I can't wait to see that.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (22:32):
No, that's going to be a cool sixty dollars autograph
in bibblehead package which includes the autograph, and the autograph
is going to be on the twenty twenty four Reds
Hall of Fame Todd Frazier bobblehead. You were here for
opening day in twenty twenty three, and but there have
been a lot of things that have happened for the good,
and then maybe some things that have happened that we
would like to see go down a little bit different.

(22:54):
But it does feel like overall the collection of talent
the Reds have had get to the big leagues has
changed significantly. I know you've had a chance to watch
Ellie Dela Cruz. What has it been like watching him
establish himself as one of the most talked about one
are the faces of baseball?

Speaker 7 (23:11):
Yeah, this guy. You know, you think about sophomore seasons,
they call those sophomore slumps. This guy doesn't have one.
He's clicking on all cylinders. He's got a cannon of
an arm and he is just so much fun to watch.
He's made big adjustments, especially from the right side, and
he's a guy that you're gonna want to watch until
he's done playing baseball. He could fly, you know, Hunter Green,

(23:34):
I mean the name another guy. He's throwing the heck
out of the ball. He's in some cy Young Award
winning talks right now. And you got a plethora of
good left handed pitching and guys that could play. So
it's just a matter of everybody's staying healthy and putting
it all together in a way they'll be.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
You mentioned the sophomore slump, and I mean, look, you
went through some of that in twenty thirteen right where
it felt like the league kind of figured you out.
So walk me through the process of in that second year.
Once the league has they've got the book on you,
and now you've got to adjust to how the league
has adjusted to you. Walk me through that process.

Speaker 9 (24:09):
Yeah, it's tough.

Speaker 7 (24:10):
I mean, honestly, if you think about it, I almost
broke the single season record for going over consecutively, and
I remember Drew Stubbs had it and I was one away.
I think it was over thirty two or thirty three.
I was over thirty one, I end up hitting a
double and Dusty Baker told me they're looking for another
third basement unless you pick it up.

Speaker 1 (24:29):
I went ten for my.

Speaker 7 (24:30):
Next twenty and the rest is really history after that.
So you kind of have that moment like, yo, what
is going on here? Like wake up, let's go this
is what you dream to do and figured it out,
got out of it, and you know, had a really
okay career if you want the truth.

Speaker 2 (24:46):
Yeah, I mean I would say I would say better
than okay. But you're you're being modest. You think I
think of that time you joined the Reds in twenty
twenty one, you become a full time player in twenty twelve,
and a really fun period of time, and all of
that is coinciding with by then, Joey Vado's an established superstar,
wins the MVP the year before you get here. You

(25:08):
played with him for quite a long time, he just retired.
Give me some perspective on what it was like to
play with him and then and then watch him go
through this seventeen year career that I think for a
lot of us we believe is going to end up
with him in Cooperstown.

Speaker 7 (25:24):
I mean, listen, one of the best hitters you're going
to ever see during his time. The work ethic, the
way he went about his business, he was just you know, unmatched.
Is it's batting cage routine. The way he worked on
defense so hard, and the way he led. You know,

(25:44):
everybody has a different way of leading the team, and
he did it differently, just like anybody else would, which
from Scott Rowland to you know, Ryan Ludwick, just the
name couple guys of Skip Schumacher.

Speaker 9 (25:54):
But Joe vato Is is.

Speaker 7 (25:58):
Just a guy like you want to be around, and
he's the guy that you flocked to and you leaned on.

Speaker 4 (26:03):
And when you lean on.

Speaker 7 (26:04):
Somebody, it's it's incredible to see what they can do,
and you know they're going to come up in some
big situations. I mean, I've seen some history with him,
and he just made it look effortless and I wish
him well.

Speaker 10 (26:16):
Man.

Speaker 9 (26:17):
He did awesome.

Speaker 2 (26:17):
You know, you mentioned a name there, Scott Rowland got
to Cooperstown last year, and I remember when Joey got
hurt in twenty twelve. You're playing first, Roland's playing third.
I mean, did you realize in real time how lucky
you were to be teammates with a guy who in
Scott Roland. You know, his career had been well established.
He was going to get to Cooperstown one day. And

(26:39):
then Joey Vado was a star by then, and here
you are kind of in between both. Boy, it's such
an enviable place for a young guy. I'm sure you
appreciate it now, but did you fully appreciate that back then?

Speaker 7 (26:54):
Yeah? And what I learned from those two, you know,
it just happened. It just happened workout, which is, you know,
you didn't want it to work out their way. One
got hurt. I forget who got hurt first. I think
Vodo got hurt first. So I played first, or fight first.

Speaker 9 (27:10):
Or whatever.

Speaker 7 (27:10):
And then when Vodo was coming back or when Scott
was coming back, the other one got hurt. So I
went to the other corner. And it kind of kickstarted
my career in the right path because I learned from one,
and then all of a sudden, I got to go
another corner and I learned from them. So I learned
first and third base within a year span, and I
think honestly I mastered it. It was something that you know,

(27:33):
I took to heart. I wanted to be the best
on everything I did, and you know that made mistakes,
don't get me wrong, But what I learned from those
two during that time period was something that you can.

Speaker 11 (27:44):
Never take away.

Speaker 2 (27:45):
Todd Frazier will be at the Reds Hall of Fame
on Thursday a pair of autograph sessions, one at three
forty five, last for an hour at the Reds Hall
of Fame Museum, and then the other at the Hall

we'll get the official list of players that have been cut,
at least for now. Obviously, they could still bring a
lot of those guys back on the practice squad. According
to a Charlie Clifford of Channel five, Shdrick Jackson has

(29:04):
been cut. Wide receiver Shaka Hayward has been cut. Muma
John Meda has made the team, according to a number
of internet and broadcast reports. I don't know that this
would surprise anybody. He was terrific during the preseason. Trey
Hill has been cut, according to Aaron Wilson. Tom Pellisero

(29:24):
says the Bengals have cut safety PJ. Jewles, and there
are others we'll find out for certain coming up at
four Red's and Ace tonight. Jacob Junas is going to
start for Cincinnati against Mitch Spence. Nick Lodolo goes on
the injured list with a left middle Fingersprain Casey Legumina

Getting engaged today is not as easy as it used
to be. Genesis Diamonds Vice President David.

Speaker 12 (30:15):
Kop taking into account social media, taking into account lab
grown diamonds versus natural diamonds, it can seem like a
lot of inform.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
Season preview report time. Tony Pike is with us. It's
eleven away from four o'clock. The Bengals are cutting players today,
getting the roster down to fifty three, and.

Speaker 1 (30:33):
Tony Pike is with us.

Speaker 2 (30:35):
Hi, Tony, Hi, know what is the most difficult cut
in your opinion for the Bengals.

Speaker 4 (30:44):
It's hard. I feel like the Bengals. I know they
moved on from Cedgick Jackson, I still think it's the
interior part of the defensive line and what they're going
to do. I was I wouldn't say shocked, but you're
going into the season right now with four healthy defensive ends,
one of them Cedric Johnson being a rookie. So you
have Osai Hendrickson, Hubbard and a rookie as you're starting

(31:05):
four on the defensive line. The defensive line, to me,
has been a talking point all year, all off season.
It's been a question mark. So I look at that
position as one of those and saying, okay, is there
a plan in place or can you go into the
regular season with four defensive ends, one being a rookie
and still bolster the interior part of the defensive line.

(31:26):
I think that becomes a very difficult and interesting decision
that the Bengals have to make.

Speaker 2 (31:30):
You and I have talked a lot about Muma John Metta,
who has made the team as a linebacker. It's one
thing to make the team and carve out a role
perhaps on special teams.

Speaker 1 (31:39):
Can he help this defense.

Speaker 4 (31:42):
Look one of the weakest depth points of view that
we've talked about all off season as linebacker, and all
of a sudden, I know he's not polished in pass
coverage yet if you watch him read the run and
phil gaps, I mean, that's an exciting point if you're
if you're a defensive coordinator and Loui an Arumo has
talked and every time he talks about him, he's he

(32:03):
is just a football guy, and that's the type of
guy you want a sponge. You know who's going to
be in there. He's got a chip on his shoulder.
He was undrafted, he got a chip on his shoulder
because he's a little undersized, and he just goes out
and makes place. And that type of player, Yes, is
going to help Darren Simmons a lot. But when you
play with that chip on a team and a defense

(32:23):
that was not good enough last year and on a
defense that doesn't have a ton of depth at linebacker,
I don't think it's out of the question if he improves,
if he advances as a cup of guy, that he
by the end of the year is helping this defense.
For lou Anarumo.

Speaker 1 (32:36):
Would you make a trade for Samaj p Ryan ahead
of four o'clock?

Speaker 4 (32:42):
I need to what's the asking price? What's the value
because at the end of the day, not many teams
have a solidified third running back. If you're down to
your third running back, it's going to be an issue.
As it is. I don't think this team is going
to rely on the run as much as they have
in years past. I think the short passing game with Kasiki,
with the running backs will be an extension of the

(33:04):
passing game. If you look back to the last couple
of seasons, the leader in catches after Higgins and Chase,
There's been a lot of years where Joe Mixon was
that guy. So do they value a third running back
like Samaj Pieran because I know they didn't want to
lose him. If the asking price is minimal, I don't
think you can go wrong having a guy like that

(33:24):
in the backfield, especially on a backfield of unknowns Chase Brown,
Zach Mosster. There's still a lot of unknown there. You
know what Samaj p Ryan was, and you know what
he is in that short down, short yardage role. If
there's a roster spot available, yeah, I would kick the can,
but I wouldn't give up a ton for a third
running back?

Speaker 1 (33:40):
Are you excited to chat with me again coming up
in four forty five?

Speaker 4 (33:45):
As excited as one could be, mo because you know,
at that point it takes me back to all those
years ago when I could breathe easy, knowing that I
had made a roster for the Carolina Panthers, and knowing
that so many, so many out there across the league
have now felt the same. And we start to transition
into okay, well, who has been released across the NFL
that maybe is a surprise and maybe could make sense

(34:07):
for the Cincinnati Bengals to add that way to the
roster as well.

Speaker 2 (34:11):
I understand, all right, I can't wait for forty five.
It'll be here before you know it. Tony, thanks so much,
Thanks mom. Tony joins us every hour season preview reports
three forty five, four forty five, and five forty five,
And of course since he three sixty tomorrow from noon
to three. Quickly on samajp Ryan. So he goes to
Denver last year and the Broncos had all sorts of
offensive issues. If you need a quick refresher on samaj

(34:35):
p Rian. He is not yet twenty nine years old.
He turns twenty nine in mid September, so he hasn't
yet hit that magical age of thirty. Understand the role
that he would be asked to play would be similar,
if not less than the role he was asked to
play here. I think specifically those last couple of seasons
twenty twenty one in twenty twenty two. Don't get it

(34:57):
twisted as they say about his time in Denver. So
Samash played in every game for the Broncos last year,
and was his workload extraordinarily heavy?

Speaker 1 (35:06):
No, it wasn't.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
He had fifty three rushing attempts, the same number he
had in twenty twenty one. Now he rushed the ball
a little bit more in twenty twenty two for a
variety of factors, Joe Mixon's health, where the Bengals were
in certain games, what they didn't have Joe Mixon on
the field for. But he carried it fifty three times
last year, basically the same number as two years ago

(35:29):
when we started to see how good he was in
a certain role. So similar number of carries as twenty
twenty one. His yards per carry average last season four
point five higher than the previous year in Cincinnati, and
the exact same as his yards per carry total in

(35:50):
twenty twenty one. As a matter of fact, his four
point five yards per carry average last season a half
yard better than his career average. Now, when you think
of Samaj, you think of his work as a pass catcher.
Last season in an offense that at times was unwatchable,

(36:10):
Samaj p Ran established a new career high for receptions,
more so than in twenty twenty two, which was his
previous career high in receptions with thirty eight.

Speaker 1 (36:21):
Last year, he caught fifty passes.

Speaker 2 (36:23):
Last year, he averaged over nine yards of reception, easily
a career high. So in a limited role, Samaj pe
Rhin was either as effective as he was in Cincinnati,
or in some cases more effective than he was in Cincinnati.
That to me is a guy that I'm interested in bringing.
He's got familiarity, you can trust him, you know what

(36:47):
you're getting. And would I pay a little bit to
replace Trayvon Williams with him? Yeah, I think I would.
Five point thirty seven four nine fifteen thirty is our
phone numbers. Bak Taylor's going to talk at four fifteen
we'll bring that to you live on ESPN fifteen thirty,
Cincinnati Sports station.

We are on the air.

Speaker 13 (37:29):
Right.

Speaker 2 (37:30):
The power just went out for about thirty seconds, but
I don't think we I don't think we ever stopped broadcasting. Hi,
my name's Maagar. This is ESPN fifteen thirty, assuming I'm
on right now. U. We're gonna break a little bit
early here because Zach Taylor is supposed to talk right
around four fifteen. It's past four o'clock. Bengals are down

(37:55):
to or supposed to. I don't know what the penalties
are of film, but teams haven until four o'clock today
Eastern time to get the roster down to fifty three.
And look, who dresses on game day is a lot
more significant than who's on the fifty three. And the
fifty three isn't necessarily the final fifty three, which we

(38:18):
all know but still interesting. Nonetheless, I think the samaj
p Tern conversation moving forward is going to be interesting.
The Bengals have just within the last couple of seconds
released the roster. So here's what they have done. They
have placed on ir Miles Murphy with a designation to return,
which means he's going to miss the first four games.

(38:40):
Same for Brad Robbins on I are designated to return,
dj Ivy cornerback who's been dealing with a knee issue.
He starts or he is on the pup list. They
have terminated the contracts of two vested veterans. These players
are now free agents, which means they can sign with
any other team, or they can re sign with the Bengals.

(39:04):
Logan Woodside and Jalen Davis have had their contracts terminated.
So and then there's the list of sixteen players they
have waived. Travis Bell, Nate Brooks, Cole Burgess, Devin Cochrane,
Elijah Collins, Carlos Davis, Dominique Davis, Nate Gilliam, cam Grandy,
Devin Harper, Shaka Hayward, Trey Hill, Shdrick Jackson, PJ Jewles,

(39:31):
Kendrick Pryor, and Lance Robinson. As you likely know, all
NFL players are eligible to be signed to a team's
practice squad in twenty twenty four, though players who are
waived must clear waivers first. Bengals planned tomorrow to announce
a practice squad of up to sixteen players, so just

(39:52):
to repeat, Miles Murphy will start the season on IR
with a designation to return.

Speaker 1 (39:57):
Same for Brad Robbins. Dj Ivy has been placed on
the pup list.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
Jalen Davis and Logan Woodside are now free agents, and
Travis Bell, Nate Brooks, Coleburgess, Devin Cochrane, Elijah Collins, Carlos Davis,
Dominic Davis, Nake Gilliam, cam Grandy, Devin Harper, Shaka Hayward,
Trey Hill, Schedrick Jackson, PJ Jewles, Kendrick Bryor, and Lance
Robinson among the sixteen players who have been waived. Muman

(40:24):
John Meda makes the team, which we all expected. They
keep the two Tanners. We talked about the last game
maybe being a battle of the two Tanners at tight end.

Speaker 1 (40:33):
That's not the case, and so there you are.

Speaker 2 (40:38):
Obviously there are still some things that can happen, and
you might argue will happen based on who else has
been cut around the league to the best of my knowledge,
and you can correct me if there's something out there
that I have not seen. The Denver Broncos have not
found a taker for samaj p Rn in a trade.
I have not seen the Broncos cuts, but the expectation

(41:00):
was that he was going to be let go by Denver.
Zach Taylor's going to talk in six minutes. We are
going to try to carry that for you live, so
we're gonna break a little bit early. We've also got
Jason isbel tickets to give away at the bottom of
the hour. Tony Pike is gonna check in to react
to what the Bengals have done at least so far,
and Brendan and Jones on Baseball all coming up in
a very action packed five I'm sorry four o'clock hour

(41:23):
plus later on David Bell offering medical updates about hurt players.
That list of hurt players now includes Niic Lodola, who
has a sprain finger, and Scott Saderfield talked earlier today,
we'll have that for you as well. We have a
lot of ground to cover. My name is Maegger. Thrilled
that you are with us today ten after four on
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 5 (41:44):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic.

Speaker 6 (41:49):
From the UC Health Traffic Center at the UC Gardner
Neuroscience Institute, you can access the leading bar just a
few minutes.

Speaker 2 (41:56):
Bengals getting their roster down to its initial fifty three
man fifty three man roster, and so I don't know
if there's any major surprises the Brad Robbins News, how
do we feel about Ryan Rico punting? Not that punter
is the most of our worries, but how do we
feel about Ryan Rico punning? Will have to entertain that.

(42:17):
But first now it's time for the head coach of
the Bengals talk about the roster being cut to fifty
three players.

Speaker 14 (42:21):
Here it is still be even though they're not making
the fifty three, there's still some good moments mixed in
there where you know there's undrafted guys possibly that are
potentially practice squad candidates. And so again it's it's certainly
a mixed day of emotions. It takes a lot out
of you for the players, for the coaches, But I'm

(42:42):
looking forward to moving forward with the team that we've
got and we feel like we've got a good team.

Speaker 5 (42:46):
Thank you, hey, Zach.

Speaker 8 (42:50):
In the release it said that you guys placed Miles
Murphy and Brad Robbins on ir Can you just give
us a little bit of update on each one of
them and the decision to do that, Yeah.

Speaker 14 (43:00):
Just gives him four weeks to get healthy, and you know,
so those timelines we're right there. So I think that's
the best thing for our team right now.

Speaker 12 (43:09):
In fact, the decision on McKinley and carrying him through,
is that good news for him?

Speaker 9 (43:13):
Or is that maybe something else still to come?

Speaker 14 (43:16):
There's nothing more to come with that, you know, it's
just again the timeline is a little bit more favorable.

Speaker 9 (43:21):
There is.

Speaker 4 (43:27):
We goo in line to punt here week one or
is that competition going to continue potentially with another edition.

Speaker 9 (43:35):
No, he's in line to punt. Go ahead, Kelsey, Can
we check in on a Marius Mims?

Speaker 8 (43:43):
I know you had said several weeks, whereas where is
he in his timeline? And do you expect him to
be able to return to practice next week ahead of
the opener?

Speaker 14 (43:52):
I don't expect it to be this week, you know,
And so we'll just continue to take it week to
week with him, but I don't expect him to be
out there on Wednesday and Thursday, and then we'll get
there the many buy there and we'll see where next
week brings us.

Speaker 12 (44:04):
Obviously a story line of movem I'm making it. I mean,
you know, undrafted guys do make it in this league,
but there are always great stories. What does that say
about him and the way he's kind of treated this journey,
perfect attitude, terrific effort. You know, he's really had a
great understanding of our defense and the limited time he's
been here, and and at the end of the day,
you have to make plays, and I think in the
preseason everybody's seen him make plays.

Speaker 9 (44:26):
He just keeps showing up.

Speaker 14 (44:27):
He's been a very productive player and he's given it
as all and so he was deserving of that spot,
and you know, so really really proud of him, happy
for him. And now you just got to keep being
consistent and helping this team win football games moving forward.

Speaker 11 (44:44):
Zach, what's the biggest challenge now going forward with regard
to the defensive edge or defensive end position.

Speaker 14 (44:51):
Well, I think we've got a good group, you know,
right now, and of course We've got a couple of
injuries that we're dealing with there, but I feel encouraged
that that's going to be a really solid group come
week one.

Speaker 12 (45:01):
Zach, can you speak to how much it means to
have Jamar Chase back in practice?

Speaker 1 (45:05):
Have we seen photos now so far we're going to
at least practicing been.

Speaker 14 (45:09):
Good, you know, just to have our full compliment of
weapons out there, I think gives you the visual of
what it's going to look and feel like for us.
And so it's been good to get him back in
the mix of these last couple days.

Speaker 15 (45:20):
What's the plan for him moving forward this week? How
much and how has he looked so far in these
in these first couple practices back.

Speaker 14 (45:26):
Yeah, he's he's looked great, you know, Sam jama I
mused too. And the plan will be continue to practice
with them.

Speaker 15 (45:32):
Has he given any indication if he will. Has there
be any conversation about what his plans are for week one?
Have you all had that discussion yet?

Speaker 9 (45:39):
He and I always have conversations.

Speaker 16 (45:43):
Coach Eric all came in with, you know, some injury
vies and had a lot to do in terms of
getting healthy first, but talk about just how impressed you
were with him and his dedication one to get healthy
and then two to get out and perform.

Speaker 14 (45:55):
Yeah, he's physically willing. I think he's gotten better each day.
I feel like I said a lot. The tight end position,
there's a lot to take in there, So for rookies
it can be challenging early on. It's probably one of
those positions where there's going to be the most mistakes
and kind of the improvement comes through mistakes and coaching
and understanding the nuance of the position in all three phases.

(46:16):
And so I think Eric has really really stepped up
his game from week to week and become a guy
that we think we can depend on, you know, as
the game's near, he can carve out a role for
himself and have some great opportunity there.

Speaker 1 (46:29):
Thank you, Zach. I think my zoom may have cut out.
Did you say the plan is for Jamaar to be
ready for week one?

Speaker 9 (46:36):
Yeah, he's going to practice this week and we'll just
keep taking it from there.

Speaker 1 (46:41):
Company he'll play week one.

Speaker 9 (46:43):
Yes.

Speaker 11 (46:45):
Back to the tight end room, Zach. What kind of
competition was there and the decision to keep five.

Speaker 9 (46:52):
Yeah, a lot of competition. It's a deep room. We
feel like.

Speaker 14 (46:58):
It's a really good group and there's some veterans in
the mix, there's some young guys that we drafted in
the mix, and so just just felt like the way
that the roster fit, we could keep five right now
and continue to develop. And so I'm I'm excited with
the direction in that room.

Speaker 13 (47:15):
We went into the decision to keep six defensive tackles
and how important is or is nose tackle what you're
looking to do with their on defense.

Speaker 14 (47:22):
I think there's six guys that can there's guys in
there that can help us. So we're we're just excited
about the opportunity that they bring. And so again I
think there's just there's conversations that sometimes are affected by
other positions as well, and and we just felt like
we had six guys that we could keep in the
mix there at the tack.

Speaker 1 (47:45):
Zach, how about quarterback behind Joe? Cea logan witside off
off the roster.

Speaker 7 (47:55):
With Jake.

Speaker 14 (47:55):
You're saying sorry you cut out there. I think you're muted.
I think the question was something about backup quarterback, But yeah,
about Joe and Jake. Now, I think we'll start to

(48:16):
progress back into work this week, you know, And so
again we'll limit him early on to not overdo it.
But things look encouraging with Jake, and so feel good
about that number two spot. And then and then, like
you said, we'll wait till the practice squad comes out
to assess that.

Speaker 1 (48:31):
Oh you get five safeties.

Speaker 9 (48:33):
I know you like the depth there.

Speaker 1 (48:34):
What do you you know like about those guys behind
uh Vaughn and Gino.

Speaker 14 (48:39):
Yeah, there's a mixture of youth that we feel like
is coming on special teams value as well. And so
again just just guys that all have traits and values
to our team right now that we think can help
us win. And so it's important to keep all five
of those guys.

Speaker 15 (48:55):
Zach, just to clarify, to make sure we got this right.
So the plan for Jamar's continue to practice through this week,
and right now you are expecting him to play week one,
That is right.

Speaker 14 (49:04):
This isn't complicated. Yeah, he's just he's practicing like he
has been in the last couple days.

Speaker 11 (49:11):
Obviously, Zach, this isn't just about fifty three. It's about
the sixty nine men who will be a part of
the roster, full roster going forward. How critical are the
next forty eight hours in assimilating and assembling the practice squad.

Speaker 14 (49:26):
Yeah, I mean, you know, you all know this is
a very fluid process over the next couple of days
and so again we assess the best ways to help
our football team. And that's, like you mentioned, Mike, not
only the fifty three, but the sixteen additional practice flood
guys and obviously the the.

Speaker 9 (49:45):
Ease to get guys up when needed.

Speaker 14 (49:47):
So really, you know, it feels like a roster expansion
the way that they've done the practice squad now. And
so it's critical because there's a mixture of guys that
are developmental guys that you want to keep in the
program and continue to develop them. And then there's a
mixture of guys that you feel like, man, we can
pull from this guy right now and he can help
us go win a game if needed. And so I
think the sixteen practice squad players gives you a great

(50:08):
blend of how to continue to progress your team forward
in a lot of different ways. And there's a lot
of guys that are gonna, you know, potentially be on
it that I feel like their ceiling is very high,
and we're going to continue to help them get there,
and they're gonna be guys that can really help us
in the future. So I'm excited to see how it
all shakes out. Obviously, nothing's one hundred percent yet, but

(50:30):
the direction it's heading, I think we could have a
really good practice squad that's gonna help us.

Speaker 7 (50:35):
Zach.

Speaker 15 (50:36):
When you go back and you look at some of
the first and second year guys or there and how
they had went through camp, are there any of them
that you thought, really when you look back, had a
really strong camp and we're really impressive.

Speaker 14 (50:49):
I think that I'm careful to sing a lot of
guys because I feel like there's a lot of guys
I can single out. I think the depth of rookies
and second year guys is good for us, you know,
from top to bottom, guys we drafted and guys we
brought in undrafted. I think that there's a lot of
talent there. There's gonna be a lot of depth that's
gonna help us now and in the future. Feel really

(51:12):
encouraged with the direction that I mean, there's none I'm
thinking of off the to on my head that are
discouraging right now.

Speaker 9 (51:17):
I think it's guys. Really, I'll just I'll use I'll
use Andree and.

Speaker 14 (51:22):
Chuck as examples at receiver, two guys that you just
see such a big difference year one year two where
they're not just processing, they're actually playing fast because they
know the system now and so now their talent's really
starting to take over the reasons that they're here. And
so there's a lot of guys like like those two
at different positions that are starting to play much faster
on special teams on defense and offense because the expectations

(51:45):
they understand them, but they just have more understanding of
the techniques and the scheme, and so it's allowing for
their potential to start to take shape.

Speaker 13 (51:54):
As you had the final conversations, did the new kickoff
will get brought up at all? As you figured out
that final or those final spots.

Speaker 14 (52:00):
It's always a part, you know, just special teams in general.
I don't think it's, man, how is this kickoff gonna
shape our roster right now?

Speaker 9 (52:08):
But that's something you just factored in all.

Speaker 14 (52:10):
Together, and that ways in Darren's head as he's fighting
for guys and has his opinion on guys, Obviously the
roles that they can play for him factors into everything.
But Ultimately, we're just we're trying to find the best
fifty three we can to shape our roster, and I
think we've done that.

Speaker 9 (52:29):
All right.

Speaker 2 (52:30):
There you go, Zach Taylor chatting with the local professional
football media.

Speaker 1 (52:34):
By the way, let me just mention this really quick.

Speaker 2 (52:36):
That was done via zoom, which means we got to
hear the questions as a listening experience better that way
or the way they do it when everybody's in person
together and you can't hear the questions.

Speaker 1 (52:51):
A couple of things worth pointing out. You heard Jamar
or you heard.

Speaker 2 (52:54):
Zach mentioned Jamar Chase a couple of times, and I
think the last time was some degree of exasperationing this
week with the expectation that yes, he is going to
play a week from Sunday against the Patriots. Jackson McKinley
did make the initial fifty three man roster not going
to start the season on IR at least based on
what we know right now, and so Zach indicated that

(53:17):
they feel, you know, pretty good about him moving forward
and him being able to help.

Speaker 1 (53:21):
Sooner rather than later.

Speaker 2 (53:23):
Ryan Rico in line to punt that, according to Zach,
and kind of and again I'm I'm a bigger fan
of what people and teams do instead of what they say,
but sort of shot down the idea that maybe he's
going to compete with somebody else here before the season begins.
Brad Robbins, if he didn't know, is going to start
the season on the injured list. Amarus Mims not expected

(53:45):
back this week. The Bengals have four healthy edge rushers,
Trey Hendrickson, Joseph Osi, Sam Hubbard, and Cedric Jackson, who
did a really nice job. Interesting to see if that's
a position they addressed when cuts from other teams become available.
If you are wondering, and I'm not sure this is

(54:06):
a solution any of us right now should be that
excited about. But he is a name that we're all
familiar with. Carl Lawson did get cut by the Dallas Cowboys.
The Samaj Pirn thing has become a big topic over
the last couple of days, and understandably so. I have
not seen the official list of Denver Broncos cuts, but
it has been reported by a number of people who

(54:26):
are quite credible that Samaj is going to be on
the outs in Denver. Aj Dillon reportedly done for the season,
in Green Bay, and so maybe that's a place to
pay attention to for samaj assuming he has been cut
and hits free agency, where perhaps he can have a
little bit more of a role than he would have
if he were to come to Cincinnati. A lot of
ground to cover, a lot of reaction. Tony Pike is

(54:49):
going to join us, coming up in fifteen minutes. But
the Bengals down to fifty three. An interesting day, a
fluid day, and still obviously a lot of things that
can happen between now and the middle of next week
when they start game planning for the opener against the
New England Patriots.

Speaker 1 (55:06):
It's been a newsy day.

Speaker 2 (55:07):
With Nicolodolo going on the injured list, the Reds right
now have two healthy starting pitchers in their rotation. They
have also put Stuart Fairchild on the injured list with
a left thumbsprain, and they have called back up Reese Hines.

Speaker 1 (55:21):
So a lot going on.

Speaker 2 (55:22):
We're gonna pause all of it to give you a
chance to go see Jason isbel that's right. We're breaking
away from all this sports stuff to give away some
concert tickets. He's playing at the Rose Music Center at
the Heights Up in Hubert Heights a week from Saturday.

Speaker 1 (55:37):
You can buy tickets or you can win them right now.

Speaker 2 (55:41):
We will test your knowledge of the shared history of
the Reds and Oakland A's because we're gonna be at
least somewhat topical. We're looking for contestants five point three, seven, four, nine,

Bengals have trimmed the roster down to fifty three. Are
you ready? Are you excited? I'll read the list again.
Miles Murphy starts the season on IR. He's got to
miss at least the first four games. Brad Robbins also
starts the season on IR. He also has to miss

(56:33):
at least the first four games. Djivy starts the season
on the pup list. These players have been they've had
their contracts terminated. Jalen Davis and Logan Woodside Bengals have Wave,
Travis Bell, Nate Brooks, Cole Burgess, Devin Cochrane, Elijah Collins,
Carlos Davis, dominqu Davis, Nick g William, Camgrandy, Devin Harper,
Shacka Hayward, Trey Hills, Schedrick Jackson, PJ Jeweles, Kendrick Bryor,

(56:55):
and Lance Robinson. Those sixteen players eligible to be signed
to a team practice squad. A couple of other notes
Carl Lawson cut by the Cowboys, des Ritterard cut by
the Cardinals, Juwan Briggs, who I think can play in
this league and is one of the easiest dudes to
root forever, cut by the Cleveland Browns Reds, and Ace
Tonight at gabp Jacob Junas and Mitch Spence. The Reds

(57:17):
right now have two healthy starting pitchers in their rotation
because Nicolodolo is going to the injured list with a
spring left middle finger six forty tonight series opener on
seven hundred, wlw rehes Hines is back too, and Stuart
Fairchild's going on the injury list with a left thumbspring.

(57:37):

Speaker 1 (58:16):

Speaker 7 (58:18):
I hope so, yes, too excited.

Speaker 4 (58:20):
I'm not sure if I'm ready or not.

Speaker 7 (58:21):
To be honest, I.

Speaker 1 (58:22):
Don't know either.

Speaker 2 (58:22):
You know what I find is one We've done this
all year long, and what I have found is we
craft the questions and people end up just guessing anyway.
So you have to successfully guess three out of five times.
Do you think that's within your capabilities?

Speaker 13 (58:35):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (58:36):
Of course?

Speaker 4 (58:36):
All right, very good?

Speaker 1 (58:37):
All right, here we go.

Speaker 2 (58:38):
We have five questions, got to get free if you
get them right three at least three right, you'll go
see Jason isbel up at the beautiful Rose Music Center. Tara,
go ahead and play the ripoff game show music. Here
we go, Kevin, the question number one. This player played
for the A's versus the Reds in the nineteen ninety
World Series. Red swept that series, which extend did this

(59:00):
player's personal postseason losing streak against Cincinnati to ten? So
this player played in all four World Series games in
nineteen ninety they lost all four because he was on
the A's. That extended this player's personal postseason losing streak
against the Reds to ten? Was this player a Willie Randolph, B.

(59:24):
Carney Lansford or C. Harold Baines.

Speaker 1 (59:29):
I'm gonna say, see Harold Bank. Can I get see
Harold Baines?

Speaker 7 (59:33):
No?

Speaker 2 (59:34):
Willy Randolph Oh for four against the Reds in nineteen
ninety oh for four against the Reds in the nineteen
seventy six World Series and played in two games the
Pirates lost in the NLCS in nineteen seventy five.

Speaker 1 (59:46):
Great career, good player, Willie.

Speaker 2 (59:48):
Randolph Oh to ten against the Reds in the postseason
in his career. That's okay, you've got to get three
of the next four. The last time Kevin the Oakland
A's advanced to the American League Championships here was two
thousand and six. That team had this former red Was
it a jose Gian B. D'Angelo Jimenez or C. Austin Kerns.

(01:00:13):
I'm gonna go a Is it a jose Gihan Tarren? Goodness,
we're on a five question losing streak if you go
back to yesterday, Kevin, We've got a rally here. But
I I'm feeling good. Are you ready question number three?

Speaker 7 (01:00:28):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:00:29):
This Red's Hall of Famer won a World Series ring
in nineteen eighty nine with the Oakland A's. That World
Series ring was his second. Was it a Tom Hume B?
Davey Concepts the Owner? C? Dave Parker, Dave Parker, Dave Parker,
Can I get it? Dave Parker the Cobra, Yes, all right?

(01:00:51):
World Series with the A's in nineteen eighty nine. Also
won a World Series with the Pirates in nineteen seventy nine.

Speaker 1 (01:00:57):
Night You're back in it. Got to get the last two.

Speaker 2 (01:01:00):
Here?

Speaker 7 (01:01:01):
We go.

Speaker 2 (01:01:02):
As you know, the Reds and A's met in the
nineteen ninety World Series, but they also met in the
nineteen seventy.

Speaker 1 (01:01:08):
Two World Series.

Speaker 2 (01:01:09):
In that series won by Oakland in seven games, three
Reds players hit home runs.

Speaker 1 (01:01:15):
One was Johnny Bench, one was Pete Rose? Who was
the third? Was it a Dennis Mankey b, Tony Perez
or c George Foster? Gotta go see George Foster?

Speaker 2 (01:01:27):
You go siege or can I get George Foster? Dennis
Minke hit a home run in Game five?

Speaker 7 (01:01:34):
Okay, I'll take your word for it.

Speaker 1 (01:01:39):
Hey, you know what, what the hell?

Speaker 2 (01:01:41):
Tarn give them the damn tickets, Kevin, You're gonna go
see Jason Isbell. Tony Pike joins us next on ESPN
fifteen thirty.

Speaker 1 (01:01:48):

Speaker 3 (01:01:51):
Well, we've got something that will make your shopping experience
a whole lot sweeter, introducing Drop Paul just.

Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
A few minutes away. But first, it's cut Bengals from
the roster to fifty three. Tony Pike is the year
for his reaction as the latest in our continuing season
preview reports, Tony, good afternoon, When you looked out who
the Bengals cut, what they did, what stood out.

Speaker 4 (01:02:16):
I don't think there's a huge surprise in any of it.
You know, I think they played it pretty close to
the belt. And you know, for me, I still think
that there is areas to improve on the roster, and
I guess that to me is my first reaction is
is where this roster is right now? Going to be
where this roster is by this time tomorrow? Because now

(01:02:38):
you have to go through what every other NFL team did.
You've got to make decisions based on that. And again
that you have to ask yourself, if you are this organization,
has enough been done to make this roster as Super
Bowl contending as possible? Is there another move to be
made for that? Outside of that, you're not left in
shock when you see any of the moves, And you know,

(01:03:01):
I think that's kind of what the roster was. I
think going into camp this was a solid roster. There
was a couple back end spots available, some depth pieces.
But when you look at where they are, I think
a lot of that's been answered and I think it
shows the depth that's been created. And now what do
they do in the next twenty four this.

Speaker 2 (01:03:16):
Roster today, understanding it's not necessarily going to be the
roster that they begin prep for the Patriots with next week.
Is this fifty three man roster today better than the
one the Bengals started the season with a year ago?

Speaker 4 (01:03:32):
I think so. I think when you look at the
loss of Boyden Mixon and replace that with Gyasiki, and
you replace that with Chase Brown and Jack Moss and
another year of Yosi Vash and Trent Irwin, and as
their upside in Jermaine Burton, I think Offensively, yes, I
still think there's a little uneasiness when it comes to
the offensive line.

Speaker 9 (01:03:52):
I really do.

Speaker 4 (01:03:54):
But you know they're going to start the season though.
If Trent Browns your starter for the five offensive linemen
of won super Bowls, and if you're talking about this roster,
I mean, those are four guys that have played for
a super Bowl in one in the National Football League,
I think that is huge to have. Upfront and defensively,
they addressed their biggest needs. They made changes, and yeah,

(01:04:15):
I do think they're better now than what they were.

Speaker 2 (01:04:17):
You know, you mentioned the offensive line, and we went
into the preseason talking about offensive line depth. I feel okay,
about it based on what I watched. Now we watch
some of those guys play against fellow backups. It's another
animal entirely if you're having to play, you know, sixty
snaps against starting caliber defensive tackles, edge rushers, etc. But

(01:04:39):
the right tackle piece, to me is fascinating because I
could be convinced that Trent Brown's going to play Week
one and play fine. I also would be unsurprised if
he's a total disaster. I feel better about the backups
and a little bit less certain about what is likely
to happen at least in the first game at a
starting spot at the right tackle position.

Speaker 4 (01:05:00):
Yeah, like we we've talked before, I just is Trent
Brown going to be ready to go for a full
season and for a full game to start the year.
But there is still there are ways that you can
work around that if you're the Cincinnati Bengals. Obviously, when
you get a Marius Men's BacT, this isn't the problem.
It's a solution. But until then, I still do think
you've got to be creative on what you're going to

(01:05:22):
do with right tackle spot because no, this this all
goes away, all all the aspirations, all the hopes, all
the Super Bowl talk conversation, it goes away. If number
nine is not back there. You can get around other injuries,
you can get around other losses. If you don't have
number nine. We're not talking about playing for a Lombardi Trophy.
So whether it's Plan A b CD E, whatever you have,

(01:05:43):
you've got to have plans in place for if things
go wrong up front? How do you get around that
with your system? How do you get around that from
a a offensive scheme standpoint? And that's what they're tasked
with now.

Speaker 1 (01:05:55):
All right? One more? Are four healthy edge rushers?

Speaker 2 (01:05:58):
Understanding Miles Murphy is likely to play, and sooner rather
than later, but he's got to miss the first four games.
Are four healthy edge rushers enough?

Speaker 4 (01:06:08):
I don't know. I really don't know if it's there
yet because one of those edg rushers is a rookie,
and I just don't know. When you look at the
edge position and it's different. You're going against guys that
have speed, that have athleticism. Your skill set in college
was good enough because you had a couple moves. You've
got to have a lot more. Look at Miles Murphy
how he struggled early and then came on late. It's

(01:06:28):
hard to play defensive end in the National Football League,
especially as a rookie. That's what makes me a little
bit concerned about that position going forward. But obviously they're
they're confident in it unless they do make a move
out there that that what they have is going to
be announced.

Speaker 2 (01:06:43):
Tony, I know you're excited. You and I are going
to chat again coming up at five forty five.

Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
I can't wait.

Speaker 2 (01:06:49):
Thanks moo, Tony Pike joining us every hour clear through
the end of training camp. They're still in training camp,
I guess technically clear through the end of next week

Speaker 2 (01:07:56):
The name twice and if I didn't, whatever, we have
a lot going on today. Bengals trim the roster down
to fifty three. Do I have to read the whole
list of guys they've moved on from. Here's what I'd
tell you, UMU. John madd has made the team. Kenlee
Jackson is on the team. He's on the fifty three
man roster. They're not starting the season with him on

(01:08:16):
I are They are with Miles Murphy, same with Brad Robbins.
They keep four healthy edge rushers. They keep a whole
bunch of defensive tackles. And if you want to go
see the entire list of players they have moved on from.
Go find it you have internet access. I'm sure i'll
read the whole list at five thirty five. I'll tell
you this though, five o'clock happy hour right now. It

(01:08:37):
is a service of miklob Ultra. If you just found
out that you have made your team's initial fifty three
man roster, celebrate with an ice cold mikkeelob Ultra. Or
if you haven't and you're wondering what's next, well soothe yourself.
So to speak with an ice cold mikkeelob ultra. One
of those sounds amazing right now. It's also a hundred

(01:09:00):
I think today outside the high was one hundred and
sixty one degrees, and so if you've been outside, you
need to stay hydrated, and yes, staying hydrated means water.
But along with that you can have a nice called michelobultra.
Nothing better on a hot day. Scott Sanderfield talk today.
We'll get to some of what he said coming up
in fifteen minutes. The Red's injury situation is just an

(01:09:24):
outright mess and there's no other way to put it.
And we'll try to spend a few minutes on that
as well Tony Pike one more time coming up at
five forty five. I have two pole questions. One is
about samajp Ryan. Samajp Ryan's been cut by the Broncos.
We have been talking about his return to the Bengals
since I think last year last summer. Excuse me, I

(01:09:48):
just neized since last summer we talked about samajp Ryan
coming in joining the Bengals during the season, where the
Broncos gonna cut him, could they trade him? What were
they gonna do? He goes through camp with the Broncos.
He has since been cut. Would he makes sense to
bring in for a team that we know who the
top two running backs are and frankly, I don't care
who's one versus two. I think the idea is for

(01:10:08):
at least at the beginning of the season, Chase Brown
and Zach Moss to both play and contribute, and if
one separates himself from the other, then things change a
little bit. And Traveon Williams, who was not cut today,
to be the third running back. And maybe that's good enough,
but it has always felt like that was a position
that might be the first to talk about when we

(01:10:30):
discuss additions. After cutdown day for players who had spent
training camp with other teams. So Samaj has been cut.
I outlined earlier how statistically last year with the Broncos
he had basically the same kind of numbers that he
had in Cincinnati in terms of yards per carry. He
had more receptions in Denver last year than he ever

(01:10:51):
had in Cincinnati, and we saw how the Bengals could
take advantage of his talents as a.

Speaker 1 (01:10:56):
Pass catcher for the role they're looking for.

Speaker 2 (01:10:58):
Pole question right now on X thanks to United Heartland Insurance,
go to uachionts dot com for all of your home, auto, business, boat,
motorcycle life insurance needs and more. Uagiants dot com. Samaje
or traveon right now. Sixty one point eight percent say Samaj,

(01:11:19):
I'm with you. The other one I think is interesting.
So I've asked this and I want you to vote.
I just posted this within the last twenty minutes. Is
the Bengals fifty three man roster as it stands right now?
There could be changes, there probably will be changes, But

(01:11:41):
as it stands right now, is this roster better now
than what it was when the twenty twenty three season started?
I give you four options, yes, sorta, not really, and
absolutely not. I don't know how you could say absolutely not.

(01:12:04):
One point one percent of you say absolutely not. The
voting is very early. Sixty five point six percent say
definitively yes. Now, remember I'm not asking about the fifty
three man roster at the end of the season. I'm
not asking about the fifty three man roster midway through
the season. I'm asking about the fifty three man roster

(01:12:25):
before the season started last year. Compare it then to
now now, you might say, Look, it's automatically better because
Joe Burrow is healthier. At the beginning of the season
last year, I think we were really worried whether or
not the CAF issue was going to be a problem

(01:12:46):
once the game started, and those worries ended up ended
up really kind of turning into reality. Now, maybe we
acknowledge that what he is week five six is better
than what he's gonna be week one. But I feel
like there's a little bit more certainty about Joe and
his health and his performance week one this year as

(01:13:08):
opposed to last year. So that automatically, for you might
make this year's roster better because Joe Burrow is healthier.

Speaker 1 (01:13:19):
There's a lot to like.

Speaker 2 (01:13:20):
At the beginning of the season last year, I wasn't
sure how explosive they would be at running back. They
weren't explosive at all. I'm not completely convinced that they're
gonna be that much more explosive at running back, but
you can't get less explosive, so I think they're better there.

(01:13:40):
I think they can benefit from continuity on the offensive line.
Four of the five starters are back, and even if
I've got some hesitancy, and I'm sure I'm sure there
are others who do as well. Even if there's some
hesitancy with Trent Brown, if he's planned b which it
felt like midway through camp he was, you can be

(01:14:01):
in a lot worse shape. I am marginally satisfied with
the depth on the offensive line I wasn't a year ago.
I think they have made massive upgrades at safety. I
love the upside of the guys at corner. I love
the upside in the second area as a whole. If

(01:14:24):
Jordan Battle is a third safety and if Josh Newton
is a fifth corner, holy crap, that's good. Obviously, the
wide receiver room is stacked. I think it's more stacked
now than it was a year ago. And that's acknowledging
that Tyler Boyd was on the team a year ago,

(01:14:44):
like a year ago at this time, and I know
Tyler Boyd's production is not going to be that easy
to replace, but I feel like a year ago at
this time, andre Yoshavash was a fun story, maybe a
little bit of a novelty. And it feels like now
like the expectation is that guy goes in and puts
a legitimate number three wide receiver numbers, maybe not the

(01:15:07):
same exact numbers that you would expect from Tyler Boyd,
but that could be a function of, well, what they've
got at tight end now. Mike Kasiki to a degree,
fits the same profile as IRV Smith, who fits the
same profile as Hayden Hurst. It feels like Mike Aasicki
is going to be a better fit than IRV Smith.
IRV Smith from about game one, you kind of had
a sense just wasn't going to work. So I feel

(01:15:30):
like at pass catcher they're at least not significantly worse,
and I think in some respect you could argue that
they're better.

Speaker 7 (01:15:41):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:15:41):
Conversely, we talked about the offensive line many have said, well,
this is this is the best offensive line that Joe
has played behind, and that may be the case.

Speaker 1 (01:15:50):
That is not a very high bar to clear, and the.

Speaker 2 (01:15:54):
Offensive lines overall ceiling doesn't seem like it's that high,
and it still feels to me like the floor is,
I hate to say, pretty low. They've got a lot
of guys at defensive tackle. They've got a lot of guys,
and they've got a lot of guys that you know,
if you look at him individually, Sheldon Rankins getting after

(01:16:17):
the passer, there's something to like there. Bj Hill and
what he's added to the team since he got here
three years ago, and even the way he played last year,
there's something too like the two early ish draft picks,
certainly early with Chris Jenkins and McKinley Jackson, there's i
think individually, something to like there. We'll find out more
in the coming days, perhaps about McKinley Jackson's availability for

(01:16:39):
Week one. I am, however, I'm not entirely convinced they're
going to be dramatically better against the run. And that
may be okay. Look, at the end of the day,
the biggest thing that lu An Romo has to fix
from last year to this year. Is stopping this team's
propensity for getting beat downfield, giving up explosive plays. They

(01:17:00):
do want to be better against the run, and they've
got a lot of guys at defensive tackle. None of
them are DJ Reader in his prime, and even with
DJ Reader last season, defensive tackle was still a problem area.
They have a lot of players. Have they made significant
upgrades for healthy edge rushers, And by the way, one

(01:17:22):
of them is Sam Hubbard. And you could argue that
this team is just better if Sam Hubbard's going to
play close to seventeen games, which was not the case
last year, and I would agree with that sentiment. But
beyond Trey Hendrickson, the pass rush was a problem last season.
Has it been rectified and has it been rectified when

(01:17:42):
you look at what they kind of don't have at
the edge rusher position. Trey's great, we know what Sam is,
Cedric Jackson's a rookie, Miles Murphy's not healthy, Joseph Osai
is an unknown.

Speaker 1 (01:17:59):
I worry about that part of the defense. I worry
about linebacker play.

Speaker 2 (01:18:05):
Now, you might argue that Logan Wilson and Jermaine Pratt
deserve the benefit of the doubt in regards to their
performances last season, proving to be an outlier.

Speaker 1 (01:18:15):
Maybe, But are we completely.

Speaker 2 (01:18:18):
Convinced that we wave a magic wand and instantly those
guys are gonna perform better?

Speaker 1 (01:18:22):
God, I hope.

Speaker 7 (01:18:23):
So.

Speaker 2 (01:18:24):
I worry about as much as I love the upside,
and as much as I think we should all love
the upside the Bengals have in the secondary, there's probably
gonna be some some growing pains. Dax Hill is going
to be tested at his new position. Cam Taylor BRIT's
gonna be tested as new in his position as the

(01:18:44):
team's number one corner. DJ Turner is gonna be tested.
I don't think we can trust the punning situation right now.
Maybe Ryan Rico is fine, and there are times he
looked fine. So also times he kicked balls that looked
like they went off his heel.

Speaker 1 (01:19:04):
So I throw all of this in.

Speaker 2 (01:19:06):
It's interesting you look at this team a year ago,
think of some of the big names that were here
that have had a lot to do with the Bengals success.
Tyler Boyd CHADOBEI Uzie, Joe Mixon, DJ Reader, those guys
are gone. So very long winded way of me saying yes,

(01:19:26):
I think the Bengals are better. Number One, I liked
the fifty three man roster a year ago. Number two,
the Bengals as a team last year, despite all the
stuff that went wrong, still went nine and eight. So
it's hard for me to say they're definitively and absolutely
and unequivocally and worlds better. In large part, last year's

(01:19:49):
fifty three at the start of the season looked really
damn good. And on a weekend, a week out basis,
whatever roster the Bengals had, whoever they put on the field,
they were still really damn competitive. They won more than
they lost. I see a lot of things that I
think are better. I see a lot of reasons to

(01:20:10):
be encouraged. There are some questions. So for me, the
answer if I'm giving four choices, and it's my question,
so I gave myself four choices, is the fifty three
player roster as of this moment better than it was
when the twenty twenty three season started. The choices are yes, sorta,

(01:20:35):
not really, and absolutely not. My answer is sorta. You
could tell me if I'm wrong. Eighteen after five o'clock
Scott's Adderfield's team better be much better this year. He
was asked about expectations for twenty twenty four. You'll hear

(01:20:56):
what he had to say along the lines of some
other things as well. Coming up next on ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports.

Speaker 1 (01:21:16):
Thousand at Knippert Stadium, year two.

Speaker 2 (01:21:19):
For Scott Ciderfield, who spoke today, Here's how he began
today's session with the local assembled college football media.

Speaker 1 (01:21:30):
Us man excited. It is finally game week.

Speaker 17 (01:21:32):
You know, I feel like it's been a long time
since December, and we've had a lot of work that
we've put in since that time too. You know, you
think about all the new scholarship players that we have,
you know, the winter program.

Speaker 1 (01:21:45):
The spring that we went through, and then this summer.

Speaker 17 (01:21:48):
Our guys have worked extremely hard to come together as
a football team, to be a connected football team, to
be a disciplined football team, and all the things that
we've worked on this off season. So we're excited about
actually playing somebody else and not not hitting each other,
and you know, getting out on the field, and and
then you know, playing in knippered Man, we you know,
what a great venue that we get to play in.

Speaker 1 (01:22:10):
Would encourage everyone to show up and show out in
this game.

Speaker 17 (01:22:13):
It's such a such a tremendous home field advantage for
us to be able to play at Nippert.

Speaker 1 (01:22:18):
And you know, so encourage everybody to come out.

Speaker 17 (01:22:21):
If if you're on the fence, come on out and
watch watch our team play. You know, we've got a
lot of new guys and they're exciting to watch, you know.
And also we got a lot of guys back that
are exciting to watch.

Speaker 2 (01:22:33):
You know.

Speaker 17 (01:22:33):
I think about first games from last year to come
into this year, and you think about offensively, I think
we had one returning starter last year, you know, and
now we got to sitting here with our you know,
starting on offensive line, back, Corey Conner.

Speaker 1 (01:22:44):
Back, you know, Xavier back, you know, at back.

Speaker 17 (01:22:48):
So there's there's a lot of guys back offensively, with
the addition of some talented players that we feel, you know, soresby,
Joe Royer, a couple of Wilde outs, you know, upgraded
tight end room.

Speaker 1 (01:23:01):
That's gonna be nice. You know, I think about defensive
side of the ball.

Speaker 17 (01:23:04):
You think about a bunch of New dbs where we
definitely needed to, you know, get some more talent in here,
and we did with a bunch of guys in the secondary.
I'm excited to watch those guys play. And then our
linebacker room, man, I'm that I'm excited to watch that
room and maybe as any position, you know, I feel
like we got you know, at least six seven guys
right there that'll be in rotation that will play in

(01:23:25):
the game, and they can all run and hit, you know,
really excited about that, you know. So so yeah, I mean, overall,
we're we're pumped about being being able to go forward
and play this first game against Townsend. We know their
coach is the second season as well, and you know
last year was around a five hundred ball team. But man,
they play, they play hard, they're coached well, they get

(01:23:48):
after it, they make it tough on their opponents, and
they had a good couple of good wins last year,
upsetting a couple of teams New Hampshire, William and Mary.
You know, so I got a tight end. I think
he's up for some watch list type things. List him
at sixty six I mean, so he's a he's a
good player. They're gonna try to get the ball to him.
Running back runs hard.

Speaker 1 (01:24:08):
Defensively, they're an odd scheme, you know, and but they
they do bring a lot.

Speaker 17 (01:24:12):
Of different pressures from their linebackers, so they try to
confuse offenses. But they do a nice job. Kicker solid,
you know. So so we certainly you certainly have a
good opponent here in this first week.

Speaker 1 (01:24:24):
All right, there you go, Scott Sadderfield.

Speaker 2 (01:24:25):
I think the question that has been asked, maybe more
often than any aside from perhaps who are these guys?

Speaker 1 (01:24:30):
Is what what defines success? What's the bare minimum?

Speaker 15 (01:24:35):
What?

Speaker 18 (01:24:35):
What?

Speaker 7 (01:24:35):
What?

Speaker 1 (01:24:36):
What can we do well?

Speaker 2 (01:24:38):
What can this program do to make people feel like,
all right, it's it's really going in the right direction,
and uh, this is something to build upon. It can't
be last year's whin total, it can't be. I think
it can't be anything shy of six victories. So Scott
Saderfield today was asked how he defined success in year two.

Speaker 17 (01:24:57):
Oh man, hopefully we win win some games, man, I mean,
you know that's that obviously, that's what everybody looks at.
And if you're not winning games, I mean they don't
see that as success. So hopefully we're winning games and
we're able to go to postseason play, you know, and
I think that that's certainly something that we're going to be,
you know, wanting to gear towards.

Speaker 9 (01:25:14):
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:25:15):
I think for us, we talked about it all off season.

Speaker 17 (01:25:17):
You know, is defending then, I mean that's that that's
a that's a big goal of ours and our team,
and it starts this week as we're playing at home,
and you know, so hopefully we're playing well here. We
got a great home field advantage, you know, packing this
place out, and you know, we want teams when they
come here to have to worry a little bit.

Speaker 1 (01:25:35):
You know, that's a tough place to go play.

Speaker 17 (01:25:36):
So I think that's our first goal and hopefully we'll
get that accomplished this week.

Speaker 1 (01:25:40):
Yeah, I hope. So, look, they've it goes, they've got
to be better everywhere.

Speaker 2 (01:25:43):
They won one game last season at home and it
was against uh n FCS opponent. That's that's not gonna work.
You know, most would say, well, if they go six
and six, that is a successful season. I wonder if
that's going to be enough to make people feel like,
you know what this coaching staff is the is trying

(01:26:03):
to think of the best way to put it that
they have the right coaching staff. That's not hard mo
that they have the right coach. Is six wins going
to be enough for people to feel like, yep, this
is it under Scott Cliderfield, they're going to be able
to compete for Big twelve championships.

Speaker 1 (01:26:17):
And let's face it, this is the new bar man.

Speaker 2 (01:26:21):
It's an expanded playoff field. Now everybody feels like their
team should have access to it. The bar is the
college football playoff. If that was the bar that Luke
Fickles set were established a couple of years ago when
they were only four teams and you were not in
a power league, it's now a power forward. You're not
in a power for a league, and now you are
in a power for a league and we've expanded the
playoff field.

Speaker 1 (01:26:41):
That's the goal here.

Speaker 2 (01:26:42):
Might not be the goal this season, but our six
wins in twenty twenty four legitimately going to be enough
for most fans to feel like, you know what, this
staff can get this program back to the playoff. I'm
not convinced the answer is yes, I think they can
get to six win. I think they can get to
seven wins. I've said for months, I think the pit

(01:27:04):
game in the Miami game or coin flip games. If
they win those two, then you start to feel pretty
good about how they can improve and develop cohesiveness and
take advantage of a relatively weak Big twelve schedule and
get to seven or eight wins. In the absence of that,
maybe exceeding six is going to be tough, but most say, well,

(01:27:24):
six is good enough.

Speaker 1 (01:27:27):
On one level, you.

Speaker 2 (01:27:29):
Might go, well, it went from last year three wins
to a bowl, and so it's hard to say the
season itself is a failure. But would six wins be
enough for most people to feel like, you know what,
this is the staff? They can get this program to
the playoff soon. Sports headlines are next on ESPN fifteen.

Logan Woodside had their contracts terminated, Travis Bell, Nate Brooks,

Nate Gilliam, Cam Grandy, Devin Harper, Shaka Hayward, Trey Hill,
Schedrick Jackson, PJ Jewles, Kendrick Pryor, and Lance Robinson each

(01:29:06):
Home Tonight for Joliette, Tony Pike with another another season
preview report coming up in just a few minutes. Thrilled
to get a chance to do this. We do this
every single year. Obviously, the Western and Southern w EBN
fireworks are happening here on Sunday night, and they could

(01:29:28):
not happen without the support of a Western and Southern
Financial Group. The chairman, president and chief executive officer of
Western and Southern is our friend John Barrett, who joins
me in studio this week every single year. Now, typically
you're with me at the Cincinnati Open. Now it's the
Cincinnati Open, and we broadcast from out there during the tournament.

Speaker 1 (01:29:51):
You couldn't be with me, so you get a chance
to be with me now.

Speaker 2 (01:29:53):
But we have to talk about that first because a
year ago at this time, there was so much uncertainty
as to whether or we were going to keep that event.
And yeah, it's been renamed, but it's here, it's awesome,
and it's only going to get bigger and better.

Speaker 19 (01:30:08):
We're very fortunate. But you know, part of the moral
of the story is never give up. Yeah, I would
say at the start of the week a year ago,
it looked like a goner, but by midweek it didn't
and the guys in charge, the guy who owns a tournament,
were open to the beautiful things that we have to

(01:30:29):
offer in Cincinnati, the crowd, the volunteers, the facilities, the people,
and you know, the East Coast is a little with
good tennis tournaments, Midwest not so. And this is the
big deal. And there was a time when they thought
about naming it the Midwest Open, and we we kind
of like we had the rights to have the name
Western Southern again this year, and we kind of gave

(01:30:52):
those up and sort of for the Cincinnati Open. And
now I think they've decided to leave it Cincinnati Open
from here on out. And the beauty of that is
it causes all of the companies involved, whether it's Kroger,
Procter fifth or Great America and ourselves and others to
all own the tournament. It's a Cincinnati tournament. We're all

(01:31:14):
in this together, which is what makes this city different,
this community different.

Speaker 2 (01:31:18):
Yeah, And I said this when I was broadcasting Without
You a couple of weeks ago, that the vibe was
so different and there's so much excitement for not just
keeping it but expanding it. And it feels like now
for that event in itself, the possibilities are almost limitless.
And we weren't saying that at least I wasn't saying
that a year ago. No, that's exactly right. And they've
got two and a half times as much land as

(01:31:40):
they would have had in Charlotte, with the opportunity maybe
get some more and do more. They're going to make
it a year round facility, restaurants, year around, pickup ball,
indoors and everything. It'll be a place where people go
sort of a fitness place, sure, and you know they
were into all the right foods and all that stuff.
It'll be a place that people families look forward to

(01:32:02):
going to regularly.

Speaker 1 (01:32:03):
Yeah. Becomes the destination absolutely, Yeah, no question about it.
All right.

Speaker 2 (01:32:06):
And then we have Sunday Night, and it's one of
the pillars of our town. It's one of the pillars
of what Western and Southern does. I'll be there on
Friday for employee appreciation, which is always sort of for
me the kickoff of the weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:32:17):
But roll through me, like what Sunday is like for you?
What's Fireworks Day like for you?

Speaker 19 (01:32:22):
Well, we start out, we used to have a picnic
on the Kentucky side, and we go over and we
do an interview over there with the Channel twelve. But
more recently there's been changes at Newport and the Levee
and whatnot, you know, construction, all that stuff. We brought
the picnic simply to the Ohio side, and we have

(01:32:42):
a big stretch of land down on Sawyer Point where
all of our associates are invited to come, serve them dinner,
have a nice time. So go down there, go down
and see you guys on the riverfront before that, and
it's always crazy down there, and Kay Chris will be.

Speaker 1 (01:32:57):
There live and in person. Yeah.

Speaker 19 (01:33:00):
At the end of the day though, it's a wonderful
time of four families and of families, and that's what
this place is about.

Speaker 1 (01:33:07):
That's what the city is about.

Speaker 19 (01:33:09):
And our thing is in our company, our culture is
we're trying to do good for others as well as ourselves,
and this helps us. We all feel like, hey, we're
doing something decent for a lot of people, not just ourselves.

Speaker 2 (01:33:23):
Yeah, and so this is obviously such a big part
of our end of summer, such a big part of
what Western and Southern is all about. But you and
I talk about this every year. It is worth repeating
the number of the number of events, the number of causes,
and the number of you know, it's not just an
event that you attach your name to. Anybody could do that,
but you really roll your sleeves up and get involved

(01:33:46):
in the the WB and fireworks Western and Southern WB
and fireworks only one of them.

Speaker 1 (01:33:50):
That's right, that's right. And it's going to keep building
forty eighth year eleventh year that we've done it, and
it gets better every year, it really does.

Speaker 2 (01:33:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 19 (01:34:00):
But I did learn something that you may not know.
There's a lot that I don't know. Who do you
think is the voice behind the RIVET? I don't think
I've ever even thought of that.

Speaker 1 (01:34:11):
Bo Wood. It is Bowood the founder. Wow. That amazing.
What a legacy.

Speaker 2 (01:34:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:34:16):
Yeah, and a good guy in a great sincenati, a
tremendous guy.

Speaker 2 (01:34:20):
I've worked here in this building for where I've worked
for this company for twenty six years.

Speaker 1 (01:34:24):
I never thought to ask who that was. I don't
know it. Could you not? It's a great question. I
don't know. Maybe I just don't have that built in curiosity.

Speaker 2 (01:34:34):
I don't know, give us an idea of some of
the other things, because you have a lot going on
Western and Southern will do Sunday.

Speaker 1 (01:34:39):
It's gonna be awesome.

Speaker 19 (01:34:40):
Then once member, we have the drone show at nine
o'clock that's right before the fireworks show. I've never seen
a drone show, so I'm looking forward to it. Yeah,
I've never did a big drone show. Yeah, that's going
to be pretty cool. That's going to be a new
feature this year. That's cool.

Speaker 1 (01:34:52):
Yeah, beyond the fireworks, what else is coming up? Well, We've.

Speaker 19 (01:34:57):
We've got Riot Cincinnati coming up in September, which is
our every dollar raised and right Cincinnati goes to cancer
research at the local research hospitals ninety nine percent, probably
to the University of Cincinnati. But if a guy from
Christ's Hospital rides and he wants it to go to
their program, it goes to their program.

Speaker 1 (01:35:19):
That's not a problem.

Speaker 19 (01:35:20):
We're all in this together, and the fight back against
cancers is really going well, very well. I mean, people
are living with this dread disease far longer and far
better there by dream five years ago. Yeah, so we
love being a part of funding the research.

Speaker 2 (01:35:37):
Yeah, it's interesting when you talk to researchers, they will
walk you through, Hey, look here's where we were fifteen
years ago, Here's where we were ten years ago, Here's
maybe where we were in some instances five years ago.
Here's where we are now, which isn't where we want
to be, right, but where we are now is awesome.
And it's a direct reflection of money raised, which is
what you guys.

Speaker 1 (01:35:56):
Are involved in.

Speaker 19 (01:35:57):
It works, and we have a great program. You see,
we've got great clinicians and uh, it's we're all. We're
all happy to be a part of it.

Speaker 2 (01:36:06):
Yeah, no question. All right, you have a lot going
on this week. Sunday is going to be a blast.
Forty eight years and your involvement has been important for us,
important for the city, and so cool to talk about
every single year.

Speaker 1 (01:36:20):
It's good to have you. It's cool to be part
of it.

Speaker 18 (01:36:22):
MO.

Speaker 2 (01:36:22):
All right, standing date right, Tennis and Cincinnati open next year.
You can do weeks August five. Yeah, so you have
two weeks to sit with me. David was terrific. Well,
we could just do it, you know, the three of
us together. It'll be fine. But I missed you.

Speaker 1 (01:36:36):
I missed you, Mo, And I actually was talking to
segment Dennis about that. What were you?

Speaker 2 (01:36:40):
Yeah, he said you shouldn't miss mo I said, okay,
all right, well we'll look past it, look forward to
next year. Good to have you as always. Thank you
so much, Thank you. Another season preview with Tony Pike.

Speaker 18 (01:36:52):
Next, What if you could face every day with confidence
knowing the ones you love or protected? Raid put sixty
five years of insect signs in your hands, because when
you're confident that your family.

Speaker 9 (01:37:03):
Is fifteen thirty, the official home of the Bengals.

Speaker 2 (01:37:05):
Yes, all right, last one today season preview reports with
Tony Pike. Bengals pairing the roster down to fifty three
players just about an hour and forty five minutes ago.
Last hour, Tony, you and I talked about surprises. Let's
run through some of the possibilities from other teams. I
asked you last hour about starting the season with four
healthy edge rushers. Carl Lawson was out there most of

(01:37:26):
the offseason, went to Dallas, got cut. Does Carl Lawson
do anything for you?

Speaker 4 (01:37:33):
No, because I've seen what Carl Lawson has been as
a Cincinnati Bengal, and you know, I'm just not as
privy on going back to the well of what they've
had in the past. Obviously, they moved on for a reason.
They didn't think the player was good enough at the time.
What makes them better now? Carl Lawson's been through some
major injuries. I'm just I'm not there. Even though defensive
end is a question we talked about last hour, I'm

(01:37:55):
just not there on Carl Lawson.

Speaker 2 (01:37:57):
They didn't have to trade for samajp Ryan. He has
been cut by the Denver Broncos. He's gonna have options,
and I know he's being mentioned in Green Bay where
Aj Dylon is now done for the season. If you
are carrying three running backs and you have a choice
between Samaj p Ran and Travion Williams, who you take.

Speaker 4 (01:38:14):
I would say I would say p Ryn just because
you know what he's been and he's actually contributed as
a running back on this team, while Trevion Williams has
been great on special teams. I know what I get
in Samaj Prn, and I know that this team relied
on p Rn in major, major situations when he was
a Cincinnati Bengal over Joe Mixon. That would give me
the confidence to run it back with p Ran. It's
number three.

Speaker 2 (01:38:34):
Brad Robbins starts the season on the injured list, so
he has to miss the first four games. Do you
have confidence that Ryan Rico can at the very least
hold the fork down until Brad comes back.

Speaker 4 (01:38:45):
No, I've seen zero level of consistency in the punter
position right now. That has been a problem in years past.
They need to address it sooner rather than later, because
you cannot afford in one of these early games you
should start. You've got three very winnable games to start
the year. You cannot afford a momentum play or a
chunk return because of a bad punt that changes the

(01:39:05):
outcome of a game early in the season.

Speaker 2 (01:39:06):
They have a lot of players at defensive tackle. How
much better are they compared to last season at defensive tackle.

Speaker 4 (01:39:14):
I don't know if they're better. I think they're deeper
at defensive tackle, and I think Sheldon Rankins is a
big part of that. And I think BJ Hill, if
he's able to be subbed in and out, I think
BJ Hill can be a weapon for this team. But
Sheldon Rankins has received rave reviews. I think they're good.
I think the defensive line is good. I still think
there are some depth questions there, but the more they
can provide up front, the more it helps those back

(01:39:36):
seven which this team was not good to get enough
against last year defensively, all right.

Speaker 2 (01:39:40):
One more than I know you have to run mumu.
John Madam makes the initial fifty three. He's going to
get a chance on special teams. Can he help this
team on defense?

Speaker 4 (01:39:49):
I don't think right away, because he's got to make
progression as a cover linebacker. But my goodness, him reading
and reacting to the run game and filling holes at
one hundred miles an hour is a site to be held.
And he's got a chip on his shoulder. He plays
with a chip and you love that, especially at the
linebacker position because of the way he's able to read
and attack. And I think he's an asset in a

(01:40:10):
linebacker room that doesn't have a ton of depth. I
think he's a huge asset to this team going forward.
Lou and Rumo just calls him a football guy, and
at the end of the day, you want to have
as many of those guys on your team as possible.
If they can get him as a cover guy, I
think he can eventually help this team defensively.

Speaker 1 (01:40:27):
H Right, Tony, thanks so much.

Speaker 2 (01:40:28):
Tony is back for since he three to sixty tomorrow
at noon and of course more season preview reports three
forty five, four forty five, and five forty five.

Speaker 1 (01:40:37):
We are done.

Speaker 2 (01:40:38):
Also, Jim Kelly's going to join us tomorrow and maybe
we could see if anyone in our audience wants to
pitch for the Reds tomorrow night. Plus we have more
Jason isbel tickets to give away. Have a great night,
Thank you for listening. Thanks to Tearan for producing. This
