Speaker 1 (00:00):
To like help me get moved in here. The if
we shot like a behind the scenes video to what
life was like here at the radio station, you would
see what the unending chaos looks like during that period
of time when Tony leaves, packs his stuff up and
leaves and I takeover. I know this is wholly unimportant

(00:25):
pretty much anybody listening, but I had to get it
off my chest. All right, it's five after three. This
is ESPN fifteen thirty. My name is Mulleger. I really
do appreciate you listening. We have a lot of ground
to cover today. Jim Kelly's gonna join us radio analyst
U see football, Bearcats, towsand ton of new guys on
the field on Saturday. Temperatures should drop a little bit

(00:47):
for Saturday afternoons. Tilt. Jim is gonna join us to
talk about an interesting team and an interesting season coming up.
At three point thirty five, Tony Pike with the latest
in his season preview reports coming up. There's been a
lot of Bengals news today. I'll start with who they've added.
kJ Henry added off waivers from the Washington Commanders. If

(01:12):
you were to look at the edge rushers, who hit
the waiver wire. kJ Henry was maybe the best a
twenty twenty three fifth round draft choice of the Commanders
last year. Last year he played in ten games, he
started three, He had nineteen tackles, four for loss, and
he had a second and a half. This year, in
the preseason, he had ten pressures in fifty one pass

(01:36):
rushing snaps. He had a really good Pro Football Focus
grade of eighty two point nine. I don't have a
ranking of the best dns to hit the market, but
number one, the Bengals needed edge help. They after yesterday's cutdown,
had four healthy edge rushers. They are not going to
have Miles Murphy for the first four games, and so

(01:59):
they needed guy I think on the list of players
that were available who could obviously help them address a need,
kJ Henry is a guy that feels to me might
have been and possibly was, at the top of the list.
So kJ Henry claimed off waivers by the Bengals. Bengals
needed to make a move to clear a spot on

(02:19):
the fifty three man roster, so they have cut loose
Travon Williams. Bengals announced about an hour or so ago
a series of roster moves including the players they've added
to the practice squad and the kJ Henry news they
have released Travon Williams, and so now Travon Williams, I

(02:39):
guess put on social media that it's it's roster gymnastics.
The Bengals right now have two healthy running backs on
the fifty three man rosters, Zach Mass and Chase Brown,
and so it feels like Trayvon Williams is going to
come back. He also could be added to the practice squad,
but it feels like Travion Williams will continue to draw

(03:01):
paychecks from the Bengals. Uh if he's added to the
fifty three before opening day, and you would imagine they
don't want to play with just two running backs. I
don't know where that number is gonna come from. There's
obviously a lot of time between now and the Bengals
first game against New England Trayvon Williams released. There are

(03:24):
a lot of people who thought that Trayvon Williams would
be released because the Bengals brought back Samaj p Ryn.
That is not gonna happen. It's at least not gonna
happen anytime soon because Samaj p Ryan, who was cut
loose by the Broncos, released a free agency has signed
with the Kansas City Chiefs. I like Samaj p Ryan.

(03:48):
How do you not right? I mean, he was a
guy that was a part of a Super Bowl team.
He was a guy who played very well in the
role the Bengals gave him, succeeded. They wanted to bring
him back in twenty twenty three. He didn't. He had
a pretty productive year last season with the Denver Broncos
in the right role, Samaj p Rine I think has
value and I think the Bengals had the right role

(04:09):
for him. Instead, he opts to go to Kansas City.
And look, that's his right, but let's be honest, man,
that stings a little. It stings a little. And at
the end of the day, we're talking about the third
running back. The fortunes of the Bengals were likely or
are likely really not going to be determined by what's

(04:32):
happening at the third running back spot, and the fortunes
of the Kansas City Chiefs probably don't rest on Samaj
p Rine's arrival and production. But for a player that
we like, for a player who fit a need, for
a player that seemed like it would make sense for

(04:52):
him to return, you know, just emotionally, and again he's
got a right to go work wherever he wants and
so limited good luck to him. But we talked yesterday
about aj Dillon's done in Green Bay, and so there's
room on the Packers' depth chart for a running back.
Had he gone there, I think most of us would
have understood. And I think most of us understand him

(05:13):
going to Kansas City. But him going to Green Bay
or playing for anybody else, you know, we shrug our shoulders.
Him going to Kansas City stings a little, especially because
the Bengals played the Chiefs week one, so on a
busy day of transactions. kJ Henry added, Trayveon Williams said

(05:34):
farewell to perhaps temporarily and samaj p rons off to
Kansas City. The Bengals have right now, and the good
news is they don't have a game today. Too healthy
running backs h Meanwhile, the Bengals aren't practicing today, well,
most of the Bengals are. Jamar Chase is not, Tara.

(05:56):
Do you have the audio from Zach Taylor's press availability
yes day? He was asked a lot of questions about
Jamar Chase to the point that I think he sounded
and looked annoyed, maybe exasperated. Do we have the audio
of Zach Taylor yesterday insisting or maybe assuring folks that

(06:18):
Jamar Chase was gonna practice today moving forward and be
with a team week one when they played New England.
If we all right, Terren's still trying to find that audio,
it's he said yesterday, Jamar is gonna practice. I think
at one point he was asked about Jamar and he goes, look,
it's not complicated. I mean, if I'm not mistaken, I
was sitting in this chair during that press conference. Give

(06:40):
me some of that audio. Terror Go ahead, Zach, I
think my zoom may have cut out. Did you say
the plan is for Jamar to be ready for week one?

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yeah, he's gonna practice this week and we'll just keep
taking it from there.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Zech, Are you company he'll play week one?

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (06:57):
All right? So I mean, look, he already has practice
this week, and he could take off today and practice tomorrow,
and by definition, he has practiced this week. And I
think we'll allow for a couple of things here, and
you know, maybe Jamari came back and he practiced on Sunday,
and he's been at it for a couple of days,
and so you know, maybe maybe he's dealing with some soreness.

(07:18):
It happens veteran players Jamar's in the year four do
take days off. There is still plenty of time for
Jamar to get on the practice field and be where
he needs to be physically and mentally to play in
a game against the Patriots. Maybe maybe the Bengals and

(07:39):
Jamar have together decided that today is going to be
an off day because there's something brewing. From a contractual standpoint,
I think we all have to allow for those possibilities.
I think we also have to allow for the possibility
that Jamar Chase just made his coach look really bad.

(08:00):
I mean, Zach was insistent Jamar's Practicing's gonna practice this week.
He knows everybody's asking and wanting to know about Jamar Chase.
This has been the biggest storyline of training camp so far.
Zach Taylor has gamely and dutifully, if you will, answered
questions about Jamar in a professional, affable, concise manner. Since

(08:26):
this whole thing started. He has been the team's only
official spokesperson on behalf of the Jamar Chase thing. Every day,
Jamar has shown up to practice, but he's not practiced.
He has made no public statements, which he's not obligated to,
but his coach has had to do the speaking for him.

(08:46):
And if I'm Jamar, there is a part of me
that at least acknowledges that and appreciates it so much
so that, you know what I'm not gonna do. I'm
not gonna make him look like a stooge. By twenty
four hours later, deciding to not practice. Now again, let's
not let's not get too deep into the weeds of

(09:07):
assumption and and and assume that you know, Jamar is
just doing this because it's contractually, it's can it's related
to his contract. Maybe maybe maybe he's just a little
bit sore. Maybe the plan all along has been for
him to take it easy today. I don't know. Maybe
I don't know. I don't know. What I can tell
you is well, I can tell you two things. One

(09:29):
is you have to allow for the possibility that Jamar
Chase made his coach look bad by having him essentially
say yeah, we're good, we're back. It's not complicated, He's
gonna practice. And then the end next day not practicing.
I think we also know that as long as Jamar
Chase is not practicing, while the contract is kind of

(09:51):
up in the air, it's it's gonna it's gonna lead
to more conversations. It's gonna lead to more speculation, and
maybe that's what Jamar wants. I also know this, and
I can only speak for myself. I'm exhausted when it
comes to this topic. And all I can do for

(10:15):
you as a talk show host is to be honest
and tell you how I feel. And I do a
lot of things very poorly in front of this microphone.
But the one thing I can say that I do
well is I'm honest and I try to convey how
I legitimately feel. You may not share my feelings, you

(10:38):
may not see my perspective, you may disagree with my opinions.

Speaker 3 (10:42):
But I.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Have a hard time and I have an extreme unwillingness
to pretend that I'm into something that I'm not or
say things that I don't believe. This is exhausting for me.
Like I don't want to say I don't care, because
I do, because I care about this team I wanted
to win. I understand Jamar's importance. I also, at the

(11:08):
heart of it, understand where he's coming from when the
guy wants his guaranteed money asap. I also understand the
different negotiating ployes that players and teams use. I get it.
I also understand the guy probably really is enjoying being
talked about. But I'm just I'm exhausted by this. I

(11:32):
don't find it nearly as interesting as so many others do.
And if that makes me less of a football fan,
if that makes me less of a talk show host,
so be it. Like I don't. I've wondered all along.
Is he gonna have a willingness to not play the

(11:52):
first game? The fact that he showed up in practice
for a couple of days would suggest, at least to
me that we should assume that, no matter what happens
between now and next Sunday, he's gonna be on the
field against the Patriots. Also, if he's not, he's not
gonna get paid. And that's all I care about. I
think if you're the average Bengals fan, maybe you are.

(12:15):
That's all you care about, right bro? Is is he
gonna play against the Patriots? Is he gonna play Week one?
Is it gonna be on the field for the games
to count. If he gets through Week one, is he
gonna play against the Chiefs? The rest of it is
I mean, it's exhausting. It's kind of ceased being interesting.

(12:41):
I certainly understand in the big picture why number one
Jamar wants his money right now. I can understand the
pros and cons of signing him to a long term contract.
I can understand what the fallout from doing it and
not doing it might be. I hope to God that

(13:01):
Jamar Chase plays the rest of his prime years in Cincinnati.
But with a week and a half to go before
the season, in a year where the Bengals have a
chance I believe to contend for a title. If you're
gonna tell me he's not gonna play, then I care.

(13:24):
If I'm left to assume that he will, then none
of the other stuff is really interesting. Now, Okay, let's
say he continues to not practice and then he plays,
and he plays and he's not very good and it
costs the Bengals a game that they should win handily. Well,
that's a problem. We're not there yet. Is he gonna

(13:46):
play for the Bengals against the Patriots, Is he gonna
play seventeen games if he's healthy this season? Is he
one of the main reasons why most of us believe
this team is gonna be a playoff team assuming Joe
plays every single game. The answers are yes. I just
I don't, and I can only speak for myself. You

(14:07):
are more than welcome to give me your perspective. That's
why we take phone calls five, one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty. I just I'm done. I don't. I don't.
I'm done. I'm I'm done. I'm I'm done kind of
being interested. I'm done having it moved the meter for me.
I'm done sitting down every day trying to come up

(14:29):
with new and at least somewhat interesting things to say
about Jamar Chase. And again, this isn't me, man. I'm
not mad at Jamar Chase at all. I do think
it's kind of weak if he just decided the day
after his coach said he's gonna practice to not show up.
I think that's kind of weak. But okay, fine, what

(14:49):
do we do now with this? I mean, is is
he gonna play the first game? If the answer is no,
then there's a discussion If the answer is yes, does
anything else really matter right now? If he if we
believe he is going to play the first game, does
anything between now and a week from Sunday matter? Go ahead?

We have a lot of ground to cover. Some interesting
stuff happening with the Bengals. This Jamar thing feels weird,
and I just simply do not care right now unless
you can convince me that I should be worried that
he's not going to play the first game. Above and
beyond that, the Reds are an absolute mess right now.

(15:56):
A storyline for the offseason is already being written, and
there are those among us who want to see the
Reds take their shortstop. Who's good at playing shortstop? And
have him play a position that he's never played. I'd
love for someone to make that make sense. We've got
the Bearcats getting ready for season number two in the
Big Twelve, season number two under Scott Saderfield, and they're

(16:17):
going to put out nearly four dozen players who have
never played for the Bearcats before. On Saturday, Jim Kelly
joins us in fifteen minutes. We have a lot of
ground to cover. Tony Pike's season preview report coming up

Speaker 1 (16:43):
You can access the Leader's podcast yesterday. He was on
my show yesterday. You should go listen to both. And
I said, like, maybe maybe not obsessing over stuff like
whether or not Jamar Chase practices makes me less of
a football fan. I can live. I can live with
that criticism. I care about the games. I just want

(17:04):
the games to get here. I just want the game.
I love the games. This this stuff, which I get,
it affects the games. It affects the teams, a team's
ability to win games. The longer it goes, less I care.
And honestly, I think I feel like I think I
can speak for most fans, not all, not many, but

(17:27):
but frankly, I feel like I speak for most. I
do think, though, when I had a conversation with somebody today,
who covers the Redskins or not the Redskins, the Washington Commanders,
Who's going to join me before the Bengals play Washington
on Monday Night Football in a few weeks And I

(17:48):
texted them and I just wrote kJ Henry with a
couple of question marks, and then it was one of
those where like you ever get a text from somebody
and you're like, screw it, I'm just gonna call them.
The guy called me and he's like, yeah, man, like
that he could play, he could play, athletic seems to be,

(18:08):
you know, good dude, works hard, productive in the preseason.
And then we talked about things that have nothing to
do with kJ Henry. So that's an interesting pickup. On
a daily basis, we have gotten Red's news about injuries.
The latest is Stewart Fairchild season seemed to be seems
to be over. He goes on the sixty day injured list,

(18:32):
they're rolling out a lot of tbds, a lot of openers.
Last night Jacob Junas as an opener through well, Red's
offense was dormant early, but hey, they they battled back
and got the winning run to second base in the
ninth inning, and so don't be so hard on him.
They tried. Injuries have been a part of this season

(18:55):
from since before the season began. You and I know
that they're not excuse, but they're a factor, and an
undeniable one, a major factor, maybe not the biggest, but
a factor. What I fear is gonna happen is because
they've really mounted here toward the end of the season,

(19:15):
and they've mounted with the one area of the team
that was quite good all season long, already this offseason
to a degree understandably so, already this offseason we were
gonna hear a lot and talk about the impact of
players in twenty twenty five who didn't play either at
all or all that much in twenty twenty four. I fear,

(19:39):
because of how they've piled on top of each other
here lately, that perhaps that along with positive run differential,
if that holds, that is going to be the dominant
storyline We joked back early in the season about how
one of my least favorite tropes around the deadline is
the Hey, hurt guy coming back is going to be

(19:59):
the best trade deadline acquisition. I have a feeling this
offseason there's going to be a lot of hurt Guy
coming back is going to be the best kind of
offseason acquisition. By the way, hurt Guy's coming back is
going to be big, they need other acquisitions. Jim Kelly.

It will mark the twenty fifth consecutive year with Dan Horden.
Jim Kelly calling the action behind the microphone pregame coverage.
We'll start at one thirty, and as he does always

(20:53):
before the season and often regularly during the season, Jim
joins us to to talk about the team. It's awesome
to have this season here. Great to have you back
with us. Jim how are you.

Speaker 7 (21:04):
I'm good, MO.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
How you doing I'm doing great. I know a major
storyline in the broadcast on Saturday is going to be
who are these guys? All the new players? And I
know you're more familiar with some as opposed to others,
simply because the volume of players who are either starting
their college football careers that you see or continuing their
college football careers at you see of all the new

(21:28):
players at different positions, give me a handful that to
you in game one you expect to stand out and
are most interesting to you?

Speaker 6 (21:38):
Well, I think you have to take a look at
the areas that the Bearcats do not have people returning.
And secondly, that, in my opinion, were the kind of
the well, we'll just say the weakest spots on the
field last year, which is a wide receiver group, and
then in the secondary, Number one would be the secondary.

(21:59):
Quite honestly, that was kind of the grip that was lacking.
The receivers weren't great last year, but at the same
time they did, you know, they did what they had
to do at times. Now the secondary and ties exactly
into what you're talking about, Mo, in reference to being
new players. That secondary that was there last year, a
number of those guys were asked to leave the program.

(22:22):
Some of them, you know, just kind of decided to
leave on their own. And so what you're looking at
in it is probably about me. And let's throw in
there also now the three three, three five defense that
Cincinnati is going to put in. So you're looking at
five guys in the secondary on the field at the
same time, and you have to be at least two

(22:44):
to three deep, and so if you look at that,
you're talking ten to twelve to thirteen different guys. And
as you go down that list and you look at
the two deep one, two, three, four or five six,
seventy nine of that eleven or twelve are transfers, so
quite a bunch of new faces. It is really hard
to even still put your you know, get your hands

(23:06):
around it at this particular point in time. But fortunately
with being the camp hire ground for you know, maybe
eight or ten different days out there for practice and
seeing them once or twice at Nippert, now you start
to get a handle on who's who. They're all going
to get the play and they all show promise. So
from that perspective, the secondary looks like it's going to

(23:29):
be much improved over last year, and you know some
of those people that you need to look for. In
the linebacker group, there's a couple of guys as well,
but you look at guys like may K Miller. Jordan
Young was there last year, but then you've got Jaquan
Shanks thanks rather than behind him. Jordan Robinson is a
transfer for Kentucky. Josh Mincoln's who's a transfer from Louisville.

(23:51):
Kai Stokes is in Ohio state transfer. Derek Canteyne, who's
a also been chosen, is one of the captains, which
I think is quite impressive considering you just transferred in
here comes from Virginia Tech. Logan Wilson, who plays the
same spot as Derek, is from North Texas. Omani Arnold

(24:12):
comes from Idaho. So you can see there's quite a
few transfers here, and there are at other positions as well.
But that secondary, which was honestly pretty pretty bad last year,
is much improved. And I think you're going to see
I think you're going to see them play very very
aggressive against Towson, who's a team that likes to throw

(24:32):
the football. So from that perspective, and then you look
On the other side, you've got Jamoy Mays who came
in from Chattanooga, Tony Johnson from Florida, Atlantic, Tyron Smith
from UTEP. You know, Aaron Turner came from Yukon two
years ago. Xavier Henderson of course, eg Xavier Henderson, who

(24:53):
was the leading receiver last year. He was from Florida.
And so you've got quite a few transfer The good
part there is and I guess I left one guy
out that should be mentioned, and that's that would be
the quarterback Brendam sor As you came in for Mineana. Yeah,
And the reason I did that is almost in watching

(25:14):
him so much. It almost feels like he's been a
part of the part of the offense for a while.
But he is very, very very very steady, a big
guy six three about twoint thirty, can run the ball,
has a strong arm, has a really nice touch on
the deep ball, things that we didn't see last year.
So I do think there's a lot of new faces.
It's going to take a while for everybody to, like

(25:35):
I said, get their arms around them and figure out
who's who. But at the same time, I see a
lot of talent out there.

Speaker 7 (25:41):
On the field.

Speaker 1 (25:42):
So that's where I was going to go next, because
I think there's I think there's enough talent that it's
reasonable to expect that this unit, this team coalesces well
enough in the Big Twelve with a reasonably favorable conference schedule,
did they can have a winning season in the league.
What worries me are nothing against Towson, the two early

(26:05):
non conference games against Pittsburgh, who they played last year
with a quarterback who was terrible, and Miami, who beat
them last year at Knippert Stadium. And I kind of
look at those two games ago, and if they could
just get by them, you know, then I feel like
as familiarity builds and as these guys come together, well,
if they can get those two early, they have a
chance to have a really nice season. But I really

(26:28):
worry about their ability to win those two games early
just because there are so many new guys. Is that
an off base way of looking at things?

Speaker 6 (26:36):
Well, No, it's not an off base way of looking
at it. It takes a while to get everything together
when you basically, in this particular case, have a lot
of new players. But let's not forget that Pittsburgh has
about thirty transfers as well, been reading a little bit
on them. They are still haven't decided on a quarterback yet.

(26:59):
They've got an incumbent who took over pretty much after
the Cincinnati game last year because Pittsburgh had a horrible
quarterback in that game. And then they've also got a
transfer in from Alabama, but they've got other spots in
reading through their stuff and just the reporters not necessarily
what the team was putting out, but the people that
were watching it felt that they were really much they

(27:22):
were really in disarray early in the summer. Well, they're
starting to take shape, just as Cincinnati is. And then
you look at Miami. They probably they lost more guys
than they've gained, but they still have the nucleus of
that team back from last year. They lost four or
five really good football players in the transfer portal, but
they've done a nice job of filling in for those

(27:43):
where they had to. Plus they've got the bulk of
their guys back. So those are key games. And then
let's go to Game four, which is a home game.
So the schedule certainly favored Cincinnati with three out of
the first four at home, and the fourth game in
that four game set is forty miles up the road,
where you're going to have more fans there than will
the home team probably, But you know, that's Houston. It

(28:07):
be that fourth game, and they've got a new coach
and about thirty new transfers as well, so they're kind
of going through the same thing. I'd rather face teams
like that early in the year than I would later
in the year. And that's the part I think everybody's
saying about Cincinnati. I'd rather play him early than later.
But your point is well taken. If they can win

(28:28):
those two games, they've got a really really good shot
at being four and oh going into the meet of
their schedule, which their next game after that would be
in Lubbock, Texas at Texas Tech, which is going to
be very tough.

Speaker 1 (28:39):
I've done a few minutes with Jim Kelly, he and
Dan hord Antony Pike to call on Saturday, you see
hosting Townsand at two thirty. I feel like I have
talked so much about Brendan Soresby, and in recent days
I've listened to him so much and I've heard so
many people opine on him that I feel like he's
going to be able to hit the ground running and
be ready to go. I know, so it's not quite

(29:00):
that simple. So at least early in the season, and
again understanding the caliber or level of opponent they play
on Saturday, what things do you expect them to be
able to do offensively that we maybe didn't see a
year ago.

Speaker 6 (29:14):
Well, Number one, this is a running football team. If
you look at what Scott Saderfield's teams have done in
the past, not once have they rushed for under two
hundred yards since he took over his head coach at
apps Stay a few years ago. He was able to
do that at Appalachian State, he was able to do
that at Louisville, he was able to do that last
year at Cincinnati. So I don't think you're going to

(29:35):
see them not run the football. They certainly are going to.
They've got you know, again, one of the things that
we haven't talked about it in this interview, but one
of the things in their favor is they have their
whole offensive line back from last year, plus two extra guys,
So they're really strong at that. Not to mention, you've
got Corey Kiner back at running back and you've got

(29:57):
additional running backs in there that I think think are
really really good as well. And that's Chance Williams, who's
a transfer from Grambling. You've got Evan Pryor, who's a
transfer from uh uh Ohio State. So you've got you've
got a lot coming back on the offensive sides. I
think they're going to be able to run the ball
in Townsend gave up four hundred and forty six yards

(30:19):
a game last year. They gave a lot up through
the air too, so I want I do think they're
going to want to mix it up. They're going to
see Soresby. Even though Cincinnati could win this game with
running the ball every play, I think you're going to
want to see, you know, a lot out of out
of Sowersby. We saw we saw a lot out of
Emory Jones last year in the opener. It didn't pan
out there in the entire year. But I do think

(30:42):
you're going to see Brendan Sowersby have one heck of
the football game both running the football in more than
you know, more than that passing the football. So you know,
I wouldn't be shocked to see Cincinnati put up a
good number of points. I don't think they'll they'll get
into the seventies, but you know, maybe in the four
and fifties and be able to really kind of take

(31:03):
over this game early. And I think that's a key thing,
and particularly in these early games that they come out
of the shoot are able to score early and get
up on top, not just on not just on top
of Towson, but when we start talking about Pittsburgh in
Miami and then Houston as well.

Speaker 1 (31:20):
Yeah, get started on Saturday, Cincinnati hosting Towson at two thirty.
Cannot wait. We'll see you then, man, Thank you as
always looking forward to it. All right, No, thanks, there
you go, Dan Horde, Jim Kelly, Tony Pike. Have the
game on Saturday. There's no better crew in broadcasting, no
better crew in college football broadcasting. And I'm also a

(31:41):
part of it. Game at two thirty. Pregame coverage at
one thirty from Knippert Stadium. Speaking to Tony Pike, he joins, us, next.

Speaker 8 (31:50):
You're dealing with an urgent orthopedic injury, just walk into
Ortho Cinsey. No appointments ever needed at Ortho Sincy Orthopedic
Urgent Care and they've got extended evening and satura. In
the baseball question, RTT Louder is set to make his
big league debut on Friday, second game of a Reds
Brewers doubleheader. I believe that news was originally reported by

(32:10):
see trend rosecrans and we'll have some Zach Taylor audio
in just a few minutes, the head coach of the Bengals,
speaking on Jamar Chase's absence from Bengals practice today.

Speaker 1 (32:22):
Tony Pike is with us. He's not absent from our
season preview reports. We have a lot to discuss, Tony.
How are you well?

Speaker 3 (32:30):
No, you know, I approached these season preview reports much
like Zach Taylor and his role, and you know, every
day is a new day, and we just got to
keep fourthing through it.

Speaker 1 (32:37):
Apparently, so there's doing and no, there's been a lot
of stuff. I want to start with. I want to
start with some of the other hard news stuff. First.
I feel like kJ Henry, based on what I know,
could play and that's a nice addition to a team
that needed another edge rusher.

Speaker 3 (32:55):
Yeah, grated out really well. According to Pro Football Focus,
comes from Clemson, can slide in and play inside a
little bit as well, So he kind of fills two
roles for you. If you look at maybe what cam
Sample was doing for this team before they lost him,
and you know it's a role and it's a spot
mode that yesterday we talked about in multiple reports of

(33:16):
four defensive ends, is that enough, especially when one of
those defensive ends is a rookie and Cedric Johnson, who
wasn't you know, a top top draft pick for this team.
And I think that question was answered today. Now the
corresponding moves to that question maybe a little bit confusing
to some, but I do think he can help this
team immediately at the defensive line position, especially early in

(33:38):
the season when the temperatures get high and you just
don't see as many guys play one hundred percent of
the snap.

Speaker 1 (33:43):
So samajp Ryan is not coming to Cincinnati. Travion Williams
is still in Cincinnati, but as of this moment, he's
not on the roster. He was cut today. He has
assured everybody that it's quote just roster gymnastics, and so
the expectation is that he is going to be right
now they have two healthy running backs. It's fair to
wonder what do they do to get him back on

(34:04):
the fifty three. But the p Ryan piece, which a
lot of people talked about is maybe a likelihood, if
not an inevitability feels disappointing. Is it disappointing because he's
not coming to Cincinnati or is it disappointing because of
where he's going, which is the Kansas City.

Speaker 3 (34:18):
I think it's a little bit of both. And that
was part of me originally that wondered where the corresponding
moves already set because the Bengals thought they had a
shot at samaj p Ryan, So okay, move on from Trevion.
We can establish and and kind of lock into that
running back position. So it's a loss to not get
p Rhyn. How do they get Trevion back? Is going

(34:40):
to be some roster gymnastics, as he said, or are
you trying to go elsewhere to find another running back
and you get Trevion on the practice squad. I think
it's very interesting and it's unique because at this time
usually it's when all the questions are answered and you
start to focus on here comes New England, I mean
the NFL regular He even starts a week from tomorrow

(35:02):
and the fifty three man roster has been made, and
it still feels like we have more questions going on
right now, especially with what happened today and some of
the earlier roster moves.

Speaker 1 (35:11):
Yeah, no question about it. Oh and by the way,
Jamar Chase didn't practice today.

Speaker 3 (35:15):
Oh oh yes, but you know no, it's every day
is a new day.

Speaker 1 (35:19):
Ah. This is this is this is factually true.

Speaker 3 (35:26):
I know you're going to play him. The comments from Zach.
I was expecting, like Zach to be like, yeah, you
know what, he's under the weather today or he's working
on The comments from Zach don't really give me confidence
in what's going on with the Jamar Chase situation.

Speaker 1 (35:40):
Yeah, well, we'll play the audio coming up in just
a few Tony, we'll talk again at four forty five.
All right, mo Tony Pike with US four season preview
reports at three forty five, four forty five, and five
forty five Bengals Patriots a week from Sunday Live on
ESPN fifteen thirty. Zach Taylor talked just a few minutes ago.
We have that for you at four h five on

(36:02):
ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station. This report is sponsored
by Miami Valley Gaming.

Speaker 5 (36:08):
Get to MPG on August thirty first for your chance
to win a new Ford Mustang for thirty five.

Speaker 9 (36:13):
Thou cass must be twenty one Ohio problem gameling could five.

Speaker 1 (36:18):
Friday night they play a doubleheader. I'll take RTT loud
or ahead of TBD pretty meteoric rise, even though they
obviously took him in the first round in twenty twenty three.
We'll get to that in a few uh one of
the experts from Wartho Sincy, doctor Trevor Wilkes on three
Reds injured pitchers and Miles Murphy, plus more from Tony
Pike and Brendanman and Jones on baseball, and you see

(36:41):
women's soccer head coach Erica Demers. We have a lot
to get to. There is a problem with the Reds
that I'm going to point out in a few minutes,
and I'm not going to be necessarily breaking any new ground,
but a busy day for the Bengals. They practiced today,
Jamar Chase did not. We'll get to that in just
a second. kJ Henry on the team, at least on
the fifty three man roster. Claimed off waivers from Washington

(37:03):
had a very productive preseason edge rusher. Bengals only had
four as of four o'clock yesterday, Now they have five.
kJ Henry last season out of Clemson, played in ten
games and was okay. He was a fifth round pick
of Washington, had a good preseason, added to the Bengals
defensive line room, added to the core of edge rushers.

(37:27):
Some ajp Ryan signs with the Chiefs. Trayvon Williams has
been cut, but he says it's just roster gymnastics, and
I believe him. The question is if they put him
back on the fifty three with two healthy running backs,
who do they take off? Could it be Jamar Chase?
Jamar did not practice today. He was there. He's doing

(37:47):
his normal bit where he shows up. This is we're
in the portion of training camp. It's like the regular season.
Media only gets to check out so much of practice.
But he did show up. He did not practice. After practice,
Zach Taylor was asked a bunch of questions about Jamar Chase.
Here is that audio that we are stealing from our
friend Caleb no at Channel nine.

Speaker 10 (38:08):
What something changed between yesterday when you said that you
expected Jamar to practice and today and not showing up.

Speaker 2 (38:19):
I think every day is a new day. We'll keep
working through it. Not gonna make predictions on what tomorrow breings.
At the end of the day, Jamar is a great dude.
That means a lot to this team, and we'll just
continue to take it.

Speaker 11 (38:30):
To to day.

Speaker 7 (38:30):
When does this become a distraction, It's not.

Speaker 2 (38:32):
I mean, it's just it's a it's a one off
situation that you got to deal with. And again, we'll
just continue to take a day to day. You still
expect me to play the open. This is all part
of that plan that we've talked about, you know, So
this is just the later stages of that plan. Sure, yeah,
but I think it's wise for me just to say
we're going to take a day to day.

Speaker 7 (38:48):
And see what tomorrow braingks as part of the plans.

Speaker 12 (38:50):
Act, did you build in in your own mind the
fact that this could happen? You know, things could change,
He could maybe not practice.

Speaker 2 (38:58):
I think you learned enough to not Gota can catch
you off guard, you know, And it's just again, the
smartest thing for us to do is just keep working
through it, keep taking a day to day. Again, he's
a he's a huge member of our team and and
appreciate him and look forward get him back, hopefully at
some point soon.

Speaker 13 (39:12):
Is a fair say, what did you talked to us
yesterday that he was your expectation that he would be
he would go the rest of it.

Speaker 2 (39:17):
I think I probably put my foot in my mouth
speaking too quickly. And it's just again, this is a
day to day situation. We'll just keep seeing it.

Speaker 7 (39:22):
Is that. How often do you talk to Jamar?

Speaker 2 (39:25):
I'll just keep that between Hendah.

Speaker 13 (39:27):
Is there a point where you feel like this is
going to impact the offensive ability?

Speaker 7 (39:30):
No?

Speaker 2 (39:31):
I think we always we've got really good players and
that that's what's good about us is we have really
good depth and in the skill position spot on offense.
So a lot of guys working at practice and get
those reps. And so of course we'd love for him
to be practicing and get those reps. But at the
same time, it does give other guys an opportunity to
to continue to step up in that role and show

(39:51):
us why they're here. And so again, you got to
find the positives in this situation, and there's a lot
of positives to getting other guys work.

Speaker 7 (39:57):
He is he fully healthy?

Speaker 13 (39:59):
Yes, I had to fully asked for clarification again, but
just to be so I think the same, that's what
he saying, is that right now is just day to
day stay today.

Speaker 2 (40:05):
That's the best way to say.

Speaker 9 (40:06):
Are you confident that if Jamar does not practice this
week he would still be able to go in the
first game, Yeah, he'd be able to go.

Speaker 13 (40:12):
What are the conditioning like, let's say he doesn't practice
of it now and that conditioning.

Speaker 2 (40:16):
He does a really good job saying shape, So there's
no like a right now, I trust he does a
good job. He's he's taking that upon himself and he
does a nice job there.

Speaker 1 (40:27):
He's trying, man, He's doing his best, that says Zach
Taylor says, Jamar Chase is healthy. He acknowledged this, acknowledges
that maybe he put his foot in his mouth yesterday,
talked about it kind of being, you know, the next
part of the plan. No, Jamar Chase a practice. Zach
is trying. He's got a very high paying, high profile,

(40:52):
prestige filled job. But there still have to be aspects
of it that in any profession that you're like, I
have to do this again. That's it for Zach Taylor,
He's trying, man. You could I think it might be
a little bit of a stretch to say that you
could hear the exasperation and frustration in his voice. But

(41:20):
I've got to think some of that is some of
that is in play here, right, How could it not be?
He just said he prefers his player practice. He's a coach.
Coaches prefer their players practice, especially their meal tickets. Jamar
Chase is one of Zach Taylor's meal tickets. And yet
he is just absolutely stuck in between upper management over

(41:49):
here and Jamar Chase over here. And those two sides
may be working very well with each other towards a
new contract. Those two two sides may have a very
good understanding of each other and what each other wants
to accomplish between now and whenever Jamar signs that deal,

(42:12):
whether it's in the coming days, whether it's right before
the season, or whether it's this coming off season. But
right there, stuck in the middle is a guy who
has a job title that suggests power, but in this regard,
has almost none. And yet he has to be the spokesperson.

(42:37):
And when you're the spokesperson for someone and you're on
an island, I mean, let's be honest, Zach Taylor is
on an island when it comes to having to answer
questions about Jamar Chase. Maybe at times you're gonna misspeak.
I did think it was interesting that when he was
asked about whether or not he talks with Jamar Chase
every day, he said he wanted to keep that to himself.

(43:00):
He doesn't exactly suggest that the coach and the player
are communicating daily and are on the same page. I mean,
and take that for what it's worth, but doesn't exactly suggest.
I mean, I don't know as a part of me
that would expect the coach to lie, Yeah, we talk
all the time. At the same time, the player did
kind of make you look like a buffoon yesterday when

(43:20):
he said, oh, yeah, he's gonna practice, and then he doesn't.
So maybe it's evident to everybody that perhaps the communication
lines between Zach and Jamar are broken. But that is
somebody who is very much stuck in the middle in
a situation that he can do almost nothing about. He
cannot sign Jamar to a contract. He doesn't have that

(43:40):
kind of power. This also isn't ninth grade. He doesn't
have the power to tell him you have to practice.
He's also not going to bench him because he's not practicing,
Because why on earth would he do that, And yet
he's got to be the public face of this, the
public voice of it. And when you're on an island
as the public face and the public voice, there are
gonna be some times where maybe you speak out of turn,

(44:05):
or say the wrong thing, or share the wrong information
and you could be excused for it. And by the way,
maybe Zach didn't do that willingly or knowingly. He might
have found out right when we all did that, Jamar
wasn't gonna practice today. I feel for Zach Taylor, and
I know there's only so much empathy any of us
could drum up for a guy who's got one of

(44:25):
those jobs that pays very well. I get it, But
I feel for him because this really shouldn't be his job.
It shouldn't be his job to speak on behalf of
Jamar Chase, but he has to. And it really shouldn't
be his job to speak on behalf of ownership and management,
but he has to. And it can't be a very

(44:47):
fun place to be. It strikes me as an exhausting
place to be, an exasperating place to be, maybe a
frustrating place to be, but it's where Zach Taylor is.
And maybe you could hear hear that in his answers yesterday,
maybe you could hear those things and his answers today.
But I'd be very willing to bet you that if

(45:08):
you got Zack off the record, he would express those
things frustration, exhaustion, exasperation, bewilderment, disappointment, whatever it is. None
of this means that Zach Taylor can't win games with
Jamar Chase this year. I expect him to, but that
is just such a really tough place to be, and
I do not envy him. I am gonna get the

(45:32):
phone calls a little bit later on we I've asked
for him, and we've got a lot happening today. So
if you're on hold, please wait five point three seven
four nine, fifteen thirty. And if you don't want to,
I don't want to be light the reds and continue
to ask for your patience and then you know not
understand why you don't continue to exhibit it. Rhet Lauder
is gonna make his big League debut by according to
I think see Trent Rosecrans of the Athletic Head At first,

(45:54):
He's going to start on Friday in the second game
of that doubleheader with the Brewers, which is interesting for
a few different reasons. The Reds are a mess right now.
This is I think hard to argue against. This might
be the most frustrating thing about being a fan of
this team right now. They've done a lot of good

(46:18):
over the last couple of years. They've had an infusion
of young talent players that have a lot of potential.
They have tried to and in some cases, succeeded at
building a core. And yet for a team that supposedly

(46:38):
has a core, there is still just so much uncertainty.
There's so much more uncertainty today than there should be
relative to how a lot of has felt midway through
last season, how a lot of has felt before this
season for a team that supposedly has this young core.

(47:00):
Here are the dudes, Here are the guys. Here are
the players they can win with. Here are the guys
they want to build around. Frankly, it doesn't feel like
that corps is all that big. And even if by
now you didn't think the Reds would be a playoff team,
I think we had hoped at least and maybe even expected,
there to be more answers than questions about the roster,

(47:28):
about the team at about its chances of finally rewarding
us for our patients. You could tell me if you disagree,
but it doesn't feel like the answers outweigh the questions.
Sixteen minutes after four o'clock, we'll spend a few minutes

(47:50):
previewing a season that begins tomorrow, the UC women's soccer program,
starting at season with a home tilt against Louisville. The
head coach joins us.

Speaker 4 (47:57):
Next Cincinnati ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 5 (48:02):
Traffic from the UC Health Traffic Center at the UC
Gardner Neuroscience Institute, you can access the.

Speaker 1 (48:09):
Lead again a three game homestand with a tilt tomorrow
night against Louisville. This is going to be inside Getler Stadium.
Kickoff is at seven o'clock. The head coach of the
Bearcats in her second season, and now that Joey Vado
is no longer in Cincinnati, we could say our favorite
Cincinnati sports figure from Ontario, Erica demerses with this coach.

(48:31):
It's good to have you. How are you?

Speaker 14 (48:33):
Wow, that's a great introduction.

Speaker 3 (48:35):
I will take that.

Speaker 14 (48:36):
I'm doing really really well. Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (48:38):
Thanks for having me so of course, that's really good company.
We hold Joey in very high esteem. So you're and
you're in good company there. Just keep that in mind.

Speaker 14 (48:46):
Well, dude, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 1 (48:48):
All right, So it's it's year two and for you,
and so your one for you is hectic, and it's
it's even more hectic now because you know, kids come
and kids leave, and you're starting in the Big twelve.
So has the start of this season at least been,
for lack of a better way of putting it, at
least a little more, a little bit more calm.

Speaker 14 (49:09):
Yeah, one d percent. You know, I think we still
have a lot of growth to do, and our players
know that. But you know, at the same time, we're
heading in the right direction. You know, I think we'd
love to be three and oh right now. But you know,
I think at the same time too, you know, we
flipped up. I think on Sunday, you know, a couple
couple of errors early in the game, and our kudos

(49:31):
to our players, they kept you know, fighting and scrapping
to get themselves back into the game, and we got
one back. We just couldn't find that second one back.
But you know, I think, like you said earlier, right,
like a lot of new faces a lot of changes
within our program, but our players are doing a really
good job to just continue to be adaptable every single day,
not only too obviously the new level of the Big twelve,

(49:53):
but then obviously our staff as well. So uh, since
you know, January twenty twenty three hit and we hit
the ground running with this program. So it's been it's
been a lot of changes for the girls, but they're
doing a great job to just give us everything they
can every day and learn as they move right, learn
as they go through at the every training session, in
every single match.

Speaker 1 (50:11):
Yeah, no, no questions. So it's it's at least nice
you get a chance for a bit of a home
stand after playing your two of your last three on
the road. You've got eight freshmen and three transfers from
other programs, so walk me through the process of blending everybody,
including obviously your your returning players together.

Speaker 14 (50:28):
Yeah. Well, we're excited to be home. You know, Gettler
is obviously pretty special to us. We played very very
well at home. We want to make sure that we
take care of our home games. So excited for these
next three games for the players first and foremost, and
then yeah, I think when you're looking at a roster, right,
you're trying to build a roster for this new level now,
and that took some time. You know, that took some time.

(50:49):
But you know, I think for us, you know, not
only the roster itself, but how we want to play right,
the positional expectations that we have within our roster. You know,
for me, my style of play is to try to
keep the ball a little bit more, you know, the
old style was you know a little bit more long ball,

(51:09):
which is there's no right or wrong to it, right,
but we have to you have to look at the
personnel within that as well to make sure that we
are teaching our players these new positional expectations and how
we want to play the game. So you know, when
you're looking at building that roster, you're looking at players
that can help you, you know, get to that point faster.

(51:30):
The better your you know, better your program as you
go through every single year. So that was why we
had you know, newcomers in some changes, you know, with transfers,
because we needed again those players that could help us
keep the ball and be more of a playmaking team
than a long ball team. So but they're they're getting it.

Speaker 15 (51:47):
They're getting it.

Speaker 14 (51:48):
We're not there yet, but we're getting it.

Speaker 1 (51:49):
No, and and and time to get it. But obviously
you want that process to to move along quickly. What
is what is the most difficult part of the transition
for an incoming college freshmen to this level of soccer
after playing at the high school and club level.

Speaker 14 (52:03):
Yeah, you know, I think it's it's a couple of things,
you know. I think first and foremost that speed of
play is always something I think. You know, we have
a good group that have played at some really high levels,
you know, ECNL Girls Academy two pretty high levels within
the youth system. But anytime you step into that college realm,

(52:23):
the physicality of the game increases immediately, the speed of
the game increases immediately, and then the consistency within those
training sessions is something you know that the youth players
aren't necessarily used to. You know, there's in there's this
new expectation now that every day they come and give
their absolute best and then are consistent with that performance.
So I think it's a lot of things with freshmen,

(52:47):
and you try to acclimate them as fast as possible,
but you know, until you really get into those games
to really see you know, that level, that intensity. It
just takes some time. You know, it really does take
some time, but they're getting it. You know, I'm really
proud of some of our freshmen that have stepped in.
You know, we've had three or four that have consistently
gotten minutes every single game for us so far, and

(53:07):
they've been acclimating really, really well to the college game.

Speaker 1 (53:10):
You know, there are and this might be a dumb question,
and god knows, I've asked many in my career, but
like you know, folks who follow college football, the kids
go through camp. The season doesn't start until you know
that the last day of August, your kids have been
playing in competitions, in games and including scrimmages that started
in early August. So kind of walk me through how

(53:31):
the off season works where you guys are playing in
competitions weeks before anybody steps into a classroom.

Speaker 4 (53:39):
Yeah, you know.

Speaker 14 (53:39):
And the thing two with it is that we actually
get the least amount of time to prepare our players
for those first exhibition games. And I know that's been
talked about in the nc DOUAA. I do hope that
those conversations now are acted upon, because we do need
more time right, we do need more time with our players,
but you're absolutely right. Like, the one good thing we

(54:00):
do have is we get about three and a half
weeks with them before classes start. And what I always
say to the players, and I think they might think
I'm crazy when I tell them this, but because everyone
has this whole facade that preseason is the hardest, right,
that's the grind. Well, I'm just the opposite. I saw
my players. I think preseason's easy because once you know,
people come back on campus and classes start, now you've

(54:22):
got a lot more expectations on your plate. That's when
I truly think it's hard. But we've talked to a
lot of our players about that, and you know, I'm
excited for you know, as it continued to progress and
adapt to you know, all of these changes and you know,
these new ideas pulling at them, new things pulling at
them that they just keep consistent with.

Speaker 16 (54:41):
Our day to day.

Speaker 14 (54:42):
But it's definitely a process though. But you're right now,
like it is nice that we get the team for
about three weeks we start our season before classes even start.

Speaker 1 (54:52):
I walked to my mailbox last night and I thought
I was gonna melt. How are you guys handling the heat,
it's been brutal.

Speaker 14 (55:00):
I'm not gonna lie the last few days where it
was yeah, it was hard, it was hot, but you know,
we wanted to make sure that we kept training because
that's what we're going to see tomorrow night, right, So,
and we were actually we trained in the morning, so
it was even a little bit hotter. I'm hoping by
seven pm at kickoff, the sun goes down, we get
that beautiful sunset behind Getler Stadium, So I'm hoping by

(55:20):
seven pm it'll be a little bit cooler than what
we've been training in these last two.

Speaker 1 (55:24):
Days, Let's hope. So tomorrow night at seven o'clock, it's
a tie die game at Gittler Stadium and mission is free.
Starts at seven o'clock. Kids Day for the one o'clock
match on Sunday against Eastern Michigan and then Bark in
the Park on September the fifth as the Bearcats host Butler.
Awesome to have you, and we'll do it again, thanks
so much. Coach, awesome, thank you so much for the

(55:47):
time anytime. Erica Dumur is the soccer coach women's soccer
coach at the University of Cincinnati Bearcats have played three matches.
They have a three match home stand starting tomorrow night.
All right, we got three pictures with injuries. We've got
the Miles Murphy news I think is pretty good. The
expectation has obviously got to miss the first four games

(56:07):
and then feels like everybody believes he's gonna play. This
is awesome. Doctor Trevor Wilkson orthos since he shed some
light on those four athletes and what they're dealing with next.

Speaker 4 (56:20):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic.

Speaker 5 (56:25):
From the UC Health Traffic Center at the UC Gardner
Neuroscience Institute, you can access the leader.

Speaker 1 (56:30):
Jamarde Chase did not practice for the Bengals today. Zach
Taylor says he's healthy. Do whatever you want with that information.
Cincinnati is not going to bring back samaj p Ryan
because he's going to go play for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Bengals have signed twelve guys to the practice squad. We
will get to the ins and outs of those guys
here in a bit. They did cut Traveon Williams. That

(56:53):
move seems to be temporary. Cincinnati also adding kJ Henry
and Edge Rusher from the Washington Command. He was cut
by them yesterday. Meanwhile, Red's and A's again tonight, Cincinnati
trying to bounce back after nearly winning. They almost won
last night. The Reds will give the ball to Fernando
Cruz to start the game six forty this evening, seven

(57:13):
hundred wlw Rhet Louder is gonna make his big league
debut on Friday for Cincinnati in game two of that
doubleheader with the Brewers. Florence y All's hosting Joliette. We
do this every week. We talk injuries with one of
the experts from Orthos Cincy Orthos since he has specialists
and locations across the tri State and they offer walk
in orthopedic urgent care during the week from nine am

(57:36):
to nine pm and on Saturday nine am to one pm.
Learn more at orthosinc dot com. That's orthos ci Ncy
dot com. Doctor Trevor Wilkes from Orthos Cinci is with us. Unfortunately,
we have three Red starting pitchers to talk about. It
feels like there's a lot of encouraging news related to
Hunter Green. He's had three MRIs, he's had inflow. Nobody

(58:01):
is talking surgery. In fact, the Reds are at least
allowing for the possibility that he may still pitch in
twenty twenty four. Start with the three MRIs. When they
do those procedures, what are they looking for?

Speaker 7 (58:13):
Yeah, good questions.

Speaker 16 (58:14):
So, I mean, obviously Reds fans are sort of on
pins and needles about Hunter Green's elbow. His history of
the Tommy John surgery is obviously what makes everybody nervous.
With the MRI, they are looking at the structural integrity
of his elbow, so they're you know, looking at his
his ligament repair. They're trying to make sure he's not

(58:37):
picked up cartilage damage over the years, and they can
see some you know, extra things like inflammation and other
things while they're there. The multiple MRIs probably indicate that
the first MRI had some questions to it, and then
they might have done a second one with with what's
called contrast or a die, which can just make it

(58:59):
a little bit easier to see stuff. But but that
that's kind of the background on the MRIs.

Speaker 1 (59:03):
So you mentioned the word inflammation. Can and this this
is admittedly kind of a dumb question. Can can you
tell me what inflammation is and what bruising is as
it relates to something like this.

Speaker 16 (59:16):
Yeah, yeah, so common terms, and I think your your
question is not it's a good question because they get
thrown around a lot. Now. Bruising specifically, obviously is referring
to blood, right, so any kind of injury, ruptured blood vessels,
localized bleeding, Inflammation being a different term for the process

(59:37):
of think of like little chemical messages in your body.

Speaker 6 (59:41):
Everybody.

Speaker 16 (59:42):
Inflammation at its core can have good components to it.
It's a part of how we heal. But oftentimes inflammation
goes overboard, there's too much of it, and it holds
up our healing. So when people see like swelling, anytime
that you've got anything that seems like swollen, irritable, these
are just signs of inflammation and you can see it

(01:00:06):
on MRIs has increased water or edema in the tissues.

Speaker 1 (01:00:13):
So obviously there's a few weeks left in the season.
From a baseball perspective, the Reds have faded from contention.
Understanding what we know about all that, but also understanding
what we know about Hunter's injury history, which has grown
to be pretty extensive, and his overall importance to the team,
does it make sense to even try to put him

(01:00:34):
back out there at some point in twenty twenty four.

Speaker 16 (01:00:37):
Yeah, that's a great question. I think the Reds have
done a really good job of trying to handle him carefully.
All baseball fans you know that guys who've had Tommy
John surgery, they're really careful about their pitch counts and
they watch them closely. But it's a good question, you know.
I would just say they should proceed very carefully. The

(01:00:59):
risk ratio may really tilt in favor of resting him
and rehabbing him and just letting him get into the
off season. But if he comes back, I think you'll
see him be really cautious with him.

Speaker 1 (01:01:11):
That's one picture. Another is Andrew Abbott. He has been
placed on the injured list with a left shoulder strain.
Kind of guide me through the possibilities here.

Speaker 16 (01:01:21):
Yeah, so, I mean, again hoping the mask for Andrew,
but your shoulder strain. In sports medicine, we use these,
you know, general vague terms that kind of cover a
lot of different things. I mean, they could cover the
spectrum mom from from fatigue and a kind of a
tired dead arm all the way to a structural problem,

(01:01:42):
you know, like a like a labraal tear or rotator
cuff irritation. You know, in in Andrew's specific situation, I
did notice, you know, he has already thrown one hundred
and thirty eight innings this season, which is over forty
innings more than he's thrown before in his career. So
they're really could be a component of fatigue and tiredness
going into this.

Speaker 1 (01:02:03):
All right, So tired arm doesn't sound like the most
clinical term, but it is. What's tired arm?

Speaker 7 (01:02:10):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:02:10):
Good, good question.

Speaker 16 (01:02:11):
I mean, you know when you are when you're pitching.
Obviously it's a complicated motion. It involves your whole body.
So a tired arm can even reflect tiredness in your legs,
your core, your shoulder blade. Even tiny differences in your
ball release points can make huge differences in your velocity
and accuracy. They're correlated to pain in your shoulder and elbow.

(01:02:37):
So a tired arm can just be that whole spectrum.
Another thing that doesn't get talked a lot that's kind
of interesting to baseball fans, mo is is the is
the concept with starting pitchers of their rest and recovery
and over the process of the season, sometimes it gets
harder and harder to be fully rested and recovered for
your next outing. A lot of really interesting new research

(01:02:58):
is looking at measurement of inflammation and muscle strength to
try to objectively assess whether a picture is going to
be ready for their next outing or they need another
couple of days. But yeah, tire Nurm's a real thing, then.

Speaker 1 (01:03:12):
Doctor Trevor wilkeson Orthos since the one more picture to
talk about Nicolodolo, when he's been on the mound, he's
often been quite good. He just hasn't been on the
mound nearly enough. He's back on the injur list now
with a strained finger. Maybe another dumb question. How does
one strain a finger?

Speaker 16 (01:03:33):
Yeah, so, I mean with pictures a lot of times,
mo it's the tip of their finger. So the last
little joint at the end of your finger, because it's
so involved in spin right, curveballs and other things like that,
sometimes you can irritate or inflame the joint itself. You

(01:03:55):
can actually strain the little collateral ligaments that stabilize the
end of your finger. You know, if you throw a
lot of curveballs that the end of your middle finger
can get pretty inflamed. So I'm thinking it may be
something along those lines.

Speaker 1 (01:04:11):
Is this the sort of thing that we have to
worry about long term? No, I think we can put
this one in a hopefully my optimism.

Speaker 16 (01:04:20):
I know he's been in and out all season long,
but of the other injuries, this seems like it's probably
in the less serious, more optimistically handled kind of situation.

Speaker 1 (01:04:30):
All Right, we have one Bengal to talk about, and
I feel like, relative to what our fears were when
he first went down with an injury, that the news
has been good. Best case for Miles Murphy. He's got
a sprained MCL. He is going to miss time, placed
on injured reserve, so he'll miss at least the first
four games. But there does seem to be a lot
of optimism about his chances of playing for the Bengals

(01:04:51):
in twenty twenty four, which is great. Let's start with them.
We hear MCL, we hear ACL, we hear PCL. Specifically,
the MCL. What does it do? And when there are sprains?
What do the various grades mean?

Speaker 16 (01:05:03):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (01:05:03):
Good, good question, thanks mos So.

Speaker 16 (01:05:07):
The MCL, the letters stand for medial collateral ligament, so
it's a really big, strong ligament. On the inside of
your knee, stabilizes your knee against forces that kind of
bring your foot outward. It's one of the four main
ligaments that the difference between the MCL and say, for example,
the ACL and PCL is your MCL has a rich

(01:05:28):
blood supply and actually heals very well on its own.
So we grade the injuries typically a one, two three
scales used ones and twos have a great track record
of healing well without surgery. Uh, and the four to
six week timeframe four miles would be in line with that.
We'll usually brace it, allow it to start to heal,

(01:05:49):
modify the athletes' activities, and then rehab them. But you know,
the good news for Bengals fans is the prognosis for
return is usually very good. I wouldn't be surprised to
see embrace him for the first few games when he returns,
but good outlook for us.

Speaker 1 (01:06:06):
Yeah, no, it definitely feels that way. The insight is
always awesome. Great to have you. We'll do it again soon,
Doctor Trevor Wilkes, Orthos Sincy. I do appreciate it, man,
Thanks so much, Benal, thanks for having me. Much appreciated,
Doctor Trevor, Doc doctor Trevor Wilkes from Orthos Sincy every week.
I say this, The great thing about the people at

Tony Pike Bengals season preview report.

Speaker 9 (01:06:53):
Next, Puller Ford, the Tri State's number one super duty dealer,
is having a huge super Duty sale with over one
hundred eighty star every super Duty pick ups four thousand
to five thousand dollars off all super Duty.

Speaker 1 (01:07:04):
He's come with FREEZ preview report time. Tony Pike is
with us. Hi, Tony, Hi, mo? How are you you know?
I Am just waiting to find out what the latest
is on Jamar Chase.

Speaker 3 (01:07:17):
You know it'd be nice on like season preview reports.
If we could start doing like you know, let's break
down the first six weeks, let's do the second part
of the season the third instead. It is it's absolute madness,
and I have to say, even on mind, I was
shocked at the developments that have taken place today.

Speaker 1 (01:07:34):
All right, well, there has been nothing news since you
and I last talked at three forty five, So let's
do what you just said for the next two minutes.
Are you ready? Yeah? List for me the three biggest
either areas of concern or unknowns as the season inches closer.
For the twenty twenty four Bengals, I.

Speaker 3 (01:07:53):
Still think it's right tackle. I do think that they
have to figure something out there. I would I would
still lean interior defensive line just to get a little
more depths. And you just don't know what they have
because it's hard to evaluate that position throughout a training camp.
And then three for me is running back. You know,
there was confusion on is it Travion would you go?

(01:08:16):
Samaj p Ryan, Chase Brown, and Zach Moss played collectively
one combined series in the preseason. So Jill Mixon's gone.
You know, he's been a staple for a long time,
and he's been consistent for a long time. And this
team is supposed to be able to line up under
center and run the ball, and they're supposed to line
up and play play action pass well. To do that,

(01:08:37):
you've got to establish a running game. And for those reasons,
I do still feel like that isn't unknown as the
season gets ready to get underway.

Speaker 1 (01:08:45):
On the other side of the ball, Tony, the Bengals
last season were last in the league in yards allowed
per play, They were second worst and yards allowed per
rush attempt, and they were tied for worst in yards
allowed per pass completion. So they were bad against the past,
they were bad against the run. We expect them to
be better in each of those areas. Could they approach

(01:09:08):
maybe the top third of the league metrically in any
of those categories.

Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
I think they could get to the top maybe half
of the league. I think the third is a push.
You know the statistics you just mentioned. It starts with
not being able to stop the run because it just
leaves you vulnerable because you have to to bring more
guys to the box to make play.

Speaker 6 (01:09:30):
So if you're not.

Speaker 3 (01:09:31):
Able to stop a run with four and you've got
to commit more to the line of scrimmage. You were
going to give up big plays, and so when I
look at that, I am still sin saying, Okay, can
they and have they done enough to stop the run?
We know what Sam Hubbard has been against the run.
BJ Hill and Shelton Rankins I think are a good

(01:09:54):
interior part of that defensive line. Trey Hendrickson is always
improving against the run. I don't yet know about Joseph Osai.
I don't know about the depth outside of that on
the defensive end position. So if this team can't stop
the run, they're not going to be at the top
half of the third of the league and anything. But
if you do take away the run and make teams
more one dimensional. We've talked about how much of an

(01:10:16):
upgrade safety is with Ginostone and von Bell. We've talked
about the emergence of Cam taylor Bridge, who still needs
to play a full season, but he is cornerback number one.
Dax Hill has gotten better each and every opportunity he's
been given. If they're better up front, I think collectively
as a whole, it helps him against the pass. And
I do think I don't know if third is viable
but I do think they could be in the fifteen

(01:10:38):
to sixteen range.

Speaker 1 (01:10:40):
Tony will preview the season even more coming up in
five forty five.

Speaker 6 (01:10:43):
Thank you so much, can't wait.

Speaker 1 (01:10:45):

friends at United Heartland Insurance. Whatever your insurance needs, and
let's face it, almost everything needs insured right your house,
your car, your boat, your motorcycle. If you have those

whatever it is. United Heartland Insurance can help uhi ns

(01:12:45):
dot com. Go check that website out and vote for
our pole questions. Jamar Chase did not practice question number one,
Jamar Chase isn't practicing your over it or obsessed with it?
I will admit to being over it. This changes if
one of two things happens. If he decides to not

(01:13:09):
play in the first game. Then what I care about
most is affected. Maybe not completely totaled, but it's affected.
If he decides I'm not playing in football games this year,
well then this is a big deal. Or if he
gets his contract extension, there are good conversations that can
be had about what it's going to mean for the

(01:13:29):
team moving forward, but nobody is going to be unhappy.
Beyond that. I'm just I'm kind of done with this.
I don't want to say that I'm completely totally done caring,
because if that was the case, I don't know that
I would spend a lot of time on it, just
as as a human being. You're gonna play Zach Taylor
again for you today. So Jamar showed up, He came

(01:13:52):
thirteen fourteen minutes late to practice. He did not go
through practice. This less than a day after Zach Taylor
sat there in front of reporters and insisted, yeah, Jamar
is good, he's gonna practice, He's gonna play. This isn't
complicated and kind of made it sound like his hold
in is a thing of the past. And then and

(01:14:13):
then he doesn't practice. Here is Zach with reporters earlier
today after Bengals practice we are stealing this from our
friend Caleb No at Channel Mind Tarn go ahead and
hit it.

Speaker 10 (01:14:28):
Something changed between yesterday when you said that you expected
Jamar to practice and today and not showing up.

Speaker 2 (01:14:37):
I think every day is a new day. We'll keep
working through it. I'm gonna make predictions on what tomorrow braves.
At the end of the day. Jamar is a great dude,
that means a lot to this team, and we'll just
continue to take it to to day.

Speaker 7 (01:14:49):
When does this become a distraction, It's not.

Speaker 2 (01:14:51):
I mean, it's just it's a it's a one off
situation that you got to deal with, and again, we'll
just continue to take it day to day.

Speaker 7 (01:14:57):
You still expect me to play in the open.

Speaker 2 (01:14:59):
This is all part of the point that we've talked about,
you know, So this is just the later stages of
that plan. But I think it's wise for me just
to say we're going to take a day to.

Speaker 12 (01:15:06):
Day and see what tomorrow brings as part of the plans.
Act did you build in in your own mind the
fact that this could happen. You know, things could change,
He could maybe not practice.

Speaker 2 (01:15:17):
I think you learned enough to not let anything catch
you off guard, you know, and it's just again, the
smartest thing for us to do is just keep working
through it, keep taking a day to day Again, he's
a he's a huge member of our team and and
UH appreciate him and look forward getting them back hopefully
at some point soon.

Speaker 13 (01:15:31):
Is it fair to say when you talked to us
yesterday that he was your expectation that he would be
he would build the rest of it.

Speaker 2 (01:15:35):
I think I probably put my foot in my mouth
speaking too quickly. And it's just again, this is a
day to day situation. We'll just keep seeing it as that.
How often do you talk to Jamaar? I'll just keep
that between HENA.

Speaker 1 (01:15:45):
Is there a point where you feel like this is
going to impact the offensive ability?

Speaker 6 (01:15:49):
No?

Speaker 2 (01:15:49):
I think we always we've got really good players and
that that's what's good about us is we have really
good depth and in the skill position spot on offense.
So a lot of guys working at practice and get
those reps. And so of course we'd love for him
to be practicing and get those reps. But at the
same time, it does give other guys an opportunity to
continue to step up in that role and show us

(01:16:09):
why they're here, and so again you gotta find the
positives in this situation, and there's a lot of positives
to get another guess work.

Speaker 7 (01:16:15):
He is he fully healthy?

Speaker 13 (01:16:18):
Yes, I had to fully asked for clarification again, but
just to be so I hear it the same. Best
way he said is that right now is just day
to day is day today.

Speaker 2 (01:16:24):
That's the best way to say.

Speaker 9 (01:16:25):
Are you confident that if Jamar does not practice this
week he would still be able to go in the
first game?

Speaker 2 (01:16:29):
Yeah, he'd be able to go.

Speaker 13 (01:16:30):
What are the you conditioning? Like, let's say he done
in practice nubbs right now and then conditioning. He does
a really good job Santa shape, So there's no like
if hes right now.

Speaker 2 (01:16:39):
I trust he does a good job. He's he's taking
that upon himself. He does a nice job.

Speaker 3 (01:16:43):
There.

Speaker 1 (01:16:44):
There he goes Zach Taylor doing his best. He is trying.
He acknowledges Jamar's healthy. Didn't animate that he's injured, sore,
dealing with anything physically. He's healthy, He's just not practicing.
He talked about speaking out of turn, and maybe he did.
Maybe he genuinely spoke out of turn. I don't believe
that he did. I don't believe that he spoke out

(01:17:07):
a turn. He's an NFL head coach who is in
his sixth season in a job where he meets with
the media multiple times per week, where there are there
are very few mistakes that are made in a setting
that is, if not completely rehearsed, oftentimes choreographed, very frequently

(01:17:31):
designed to send a message, and often very carefully designed
to not make any news. I don't think Zach Taylor,
who's affable and friendly and nice and doing his best
in the audio you just heard, to make light of
the situation and have a little bit of fun with

(01:17:51):
it and maybe not be not come across as angry
or exasperated. This is a guy who knows how this works.
How many times in now six seasons has he spoken
out of turn? He didn't speak out of turn. He
genuinely met with the media yesterday thinking Jamar's practicing, and

(01:18:12):
then Jamar changed his mind. Jamar's a smart enough guy
that he knew that was gonna make his coach look bad,
and he still did it. What other conclusion am I
left to draw? Five point three seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty. Now,
this may have no impact on the team. I don't

(01:18:33):
really think it's going to have a major impact on
the team unless Jamar decides to miss football games, and
I'm still assuming that he's not gonna do that. But
as a public drama unfolds, the human part of it
really comes to the surface, and if I'm Zach Taylor,
the human being, I'm pissed, dude. I've done nothing but

(01:18:56):
carry your water for four weeks. I am talk in
the middle. I can't give you a new contract. I
can't do anything about what you're getting paid or not
getting paid. I need you to practice. I can't make
you practice. So what I'm gonna do you won't talk publicly.
What I'm gonna do is speak on your behalf and
talk about this situation and try to handle this delicate

(01:19:20):
situation as best as I can publicly. I'll do it
for you. And then you do me wrong like this,
You make me look bad, and then you force me
to go out there and again have to explain a
day after I said you're going to practice, why you're
not practicing. I love Jamar Chase, terrific player, absolutely essential

(01:19:44):
part of this team by every account. Good dude, but
this is really crappy. That's a really crappy thing to
do to your coach. If we take Zach and his
word that the player is healthy, and if we assume
that management didn't tell him to do this, and it's

(01:20:04):
worth at least considering if that did happen. If you
believe they're close to a contract getting done, this this
is wrong. It's just the wrong thing to do. None
of that means that Jamar Chase is a awful human
being and just handled this situation today and yesterday, I
guess poorly. And so you could hear Zach and maybe

(01:20:24):
you hear exasperation, Maybe you hear frustration. Maybe you hear
a guy who's just so tired of having to deal
with this publicly, who maybe yesterday thought, you know what,
at the very least, I don't have to answer questions
about Jamar Chase anymore. And now here we are again,
and I gotta answer more questions, and maybe more the
next time he talks with the media. There's just built

(01:20:46):
in exasperation with that, and it's amplified when you feel
like a guy that you've that you've treated very well,
a guy that you kind of became the mouthpiece of
to a small degree, this summer. Did you you wrong?
That's a it's just it's a it's a good guy
doing a crappy thing. It's a good guy maybe making

(01:21:08):
someone else look bad. Regardless, it's it's less than ideal. Now,
I don't know that we have to get into a
whole deep dive as to whether or not, well Jamar
doesn't respect Zach and the players don't respect Zach. I
don't know that we have to to go that far.
I'll let some hot take artist go down that road,
but still just put yourself in Zach Taylor's shoes. You are, unfortunately,

(01:21:34):
absolutely stuck in the middle of management and a player.
You can't do anything about what the player wants. You
need the player. You can't make the player practice. Management's
not talking, the player is not talking. You're talking, and
you're doing as best as you can't publicly to diffuse
the situation and at times make light of it. As

(01:21:57):
the situation continues to have no resolute then the situation
has a resolution, you feel like you can breathe a
sigh relief, perhaps not have to spend any more time
talking about the situation. And then a day later, the
player does exactly what you said he wasn't going to do.
How would you feel if you were Zach Taylor, that's

(01:22:18):
the question five point three seven four nine, fifteen thirty.
Maybe it would not impact your relationship with the player.
Maybe it would not impact your willingness to watch Jamar
Chase have a fifteen hundred yard season. But it's just
a lousy thing to do it just I mean, as
this is at its essence a bit of a human drama, right, well,

(01:22:40):
it's a bit of a lousy thing to do to
another human being. It's not the worst thing you can
do by any stretch, but it's a lousy thing to do,
and it does make it did at least make Zach
Taylor look bad. He will take responsibility for it. You
just heard him. He'll talk about maybe speaking out of turn.
He'll he'll point the arrow at himself. He'll he'll direct

(01:23:01):
attention to himself. Shouldn't have to do that. He's done
it for a few weeks. He thought he was done
having to do it. He did it again today. You
know what Jamar Chase could do out of appreciation, show
up and practice with his teammates tomorrow and end this.
End this because Zach Taylor is not the one who

(01:23:23):
isn't giving him a contract. He's not, He has nothing
to do with it. This dude has stuck his neck
out for you for a month and you made him
look bad yesterday. Want to make up for it, show
up to work tomorrow and get ready for a season
that if you have the season we all think you have,
you could use to get even more money from someone

(01:23:45):
who's not Zach Taylor nineteen after five o'clock. Your phone
calls are welcome. Five point three seven four nine, fifteen thirty.
Maybe I'm not over it. Maybe I'm not over the
Jamar Chase thing. Uh do we want the Reds to
have outfielders play the outfield next year? We'll spend time

(01:24:06):
on that. We'll get to our other two pole questions
as well, because I do have three. Vote now at
Moegger nineteen after five o'clock on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati
Sports Station.

Speaker 4 (01:24:16):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic.

Speaker 5 (01:24:21):
From the UC Health Traffic Center at the UC Gardner
Neuroscience Institute.

Speaker 1 (01:24:25):
You can host with it. The other is about the Reds.
So the Pirates took Onneil Cruz wonderful talent, below average shortstop.
They have moved him to center field. These two players,
in terms of age and body type and skill set,
and I think upside have drawn a lot of comparisons
to each other, and understandably so. And so a lot

(01:24:46):
of folks took this and said, well, see, this is
what the red should do with Elie de la Cruz.
They should move them to centerfield. And I don't have
nearly as much time to talk about this today as
I would like, so we can perhaps carve out some
time tomorrow. But my question is basically, should the Reds
do the same with Eli dela Cruise? Elie dela Cruz,
by I think the basic, the most basic advanced metric

(01:25:09):
I could give you, is an above average shortstop. Yes,
he has a lot of errors, but in Baseball Savant's
fielding run value metric, he is the fifth best shortstop
in baseball. He has played eleven hundred and thirty one
innings at shortstop this year. He has never played an

(01:25:31):
inning as a pro in the outfield. And yet you
will find people, many, some prominent folks who want to
move him to centerfield. Do you think they should do that?
Vote now, ad Moeger Thanks to United Heartland Insurance. I
have a novel idea. How about the Reds in twenty

(01:25:52):
twenty five play outfielders in the outfield. It's not to
say that they haven't done that. TJ. Friedel is an
outfielder and Will Benson, who last night was not a
good night. If you're trying to read the writing on
the wall for Will Benson, Will Benson is an outfielder.

(01:26:13):
But it often feels like we talk about the outfield
the way we used to talk about the bullpen, and
sometimes the way we talk about garbage dumps. Oh, just
just put him out there. How about this next year? Like,
at each position, get a player who plays that position.
I feel like for most of my adult life there
have been ongoing conversations about taking somebody who's not an

(01:26:35):
outfielder and putting him in the outfield, as if it's
just a place. I just magically they'll turn into a
good outfielder. They've had success stories Billy Hamilton, perhaps most
notably with Ellie de la Cruz. He's already shown you
at that position, which is a very important position. There's
something to build on. Are there flaws? Absolutely? There are

(01:26:55):
rooutine plays. He has to be better at making. How
about that, how about we allow him to continue to
get better. I'm very happy that growing up, despite committing
a billion errors his first couple of seasons, the Reds
did not move Barry Larkin from shortstop worked out pretty well.
I'm not telling you that Elie de la Cruz will

(01:27:17):
be a goal glove winner like Barry Larkin or a
Hall of Famer, But for someone who was relatively short
on minor league experience, how about we allow him to
get better and grow into the role that they've already
invested a lot of time in him growing into, and
next season, find a center fielder, maybe that centerfielder you

(01:27:37):
still believe should be TJ for Find a center fielder,
I mean, NonStop, whether it's Jonathan Indiair, Devin Mezeracto, or
Nick son Zell, NonStop, just try him out there in
the outfield. Or what you could do is get outfielders
good ones and keep your good shortstop. Vote now, other

(01:28:01):
one is about the over under for the UC Bearcats.
I'm optimistic about the Big Twelve part of the season
because I don't think the league is very good, and
within that not very good league, the schedule is favorable
I'm worried about Pittsburgh and Miami. They clear those two hurdles.
I think this team comes together late in the season.

(01:28:22):
There are winnable games, and it might sound crazy. Football
Power Index would not agree. I think seven wins is doable.
Who wouldn't sign up for that? Over unders five and
a half? Do they clear it? Vote now? And the
other one's about Zach Taylor. If you were Zach Taylor,
how would you feel about Jamar Chase not practicing after
you insisted he would? Would you be angry or would

(01:28:43):
you not care? I'd be my feelings would be heard.
I think that's the best way to put it. I
have babbled long enough. Let's talk to other people. Ron
and Milford, thank you for your patience. You're on ESPN
fifteen thirty. How are you?

Speaker 6 (01:28:58):
I'm okay, nough.

Speaker 17 (01:28:59):
How are you doing?

Speaker 1 (01:29:00):
I have legitimately never been better in my forty six
plus years of existence.

Speaker 17 (01:29:05):
No, I tell you how I feel. I feel like
Dave schul and Gary Reason pulled that hat over my head.
That's how I would feel I was Zach Taylor.

Speaker 1 (01:29:14):
Yeah, yeah, it's I mean, it's it's it's disrespectful, like
Dave Shula stunk as a coach. That guy didn't accomplish anything.
Zach Taylor's accomplished some stuff in this league and had
his players back all throughout this process.

Speaker 17 (01:29:28):
Yeah, and no, I don't. I know you've been working
so you haven't had a chance to see this, probably,
but NFL Live, Adam Shefter said that his thoughts were
that one week Jamar Chase would say that he's got
a tight hamstring.

Speaker 15 (01:29:43):
The next week he.

Speaker 17 (01:29:44):
Could say he had a bad back. The next week,
he could say.

Speaker 11 (01:29:46):
That he had turf toe, the next week he could
say that he strained his neck. He said that, you know,
there's no reason that he has to go out there
and play. He can come up with any sort of
ailment and tell them that, hey, I got nailman.

Speaker 17 (01:30:00):
Yeah I can't go this week.

Speaker 1 (01:30:01):
M Yeah, that's h And Adam did put that out there.
Paul and I have talked about that. That's been speculated
about in from a lot of different corners, and it's
it's plausible. What you would like to think is that
Jamar with maybe the carrot of a new contract dangling
in front of him that could pay him even more

(01:30:22):
if he has the sort of season that we all
hope for with the the unwillingness, maybe to look his
teammates in the eyes and tell him that he's more
hurt than he is, or that he's hurt when he's not.
Maybe that would dissuade him from doing that. Maybe just
wanting to go and win a ring and win a
title this year would dissuade him from doing that. But
is that theoretically on the table? Sure, now, that's theoretically

(01:30:45):
on the table for a lot of guys. You would
like to think that if you believe, as many of
us do, that the Bengals culture is a part of
why this team has had some success over the last
three years and a lot of success the previous two
prior to last season, that that's going to be something
that would preclude Jamar from doing it. What I would
wonder is if the season went sideways, would there be

(01:31:07):
a situation like JJ Greens in twenty nineteen where the
season went poorly, the team was going nowhere. AJ's out
there running routes showing he could play, but he's not playing.

Speaker 10 (01:31:18):
Now.

Speaker 1 (01:31:19):
Hopefully the team is good enough that Jamar wants to
be a part of it, understands his value and even
if he doesn't have a new contract, gets what he
could do for his future earnings by playing well. But sure,
I guess you have to allow for the possibility that
what you outlined may turn into reality.

Speaker 7 (01:31:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 17 (01:31:35):
They also all the rest the crew there.

Speaker 11 (01:31:38):
Most said that, you know, Jamar and his agents should
know how the big Ones operate, which is they.

Speaker 17 (01:31:44):
Don't do anything unless they feel like they absolutely have to.

Speaker 1 (01:31:49):
That the Bengals don't do anything unless they feel like
they have to.

Speaker 17 (01:31:52):
Yeah, unless they absolutely feel like they have to. And
they said that, you know, when you gamble against Mike Brown,
you're gonna lose because that's how it always is.

Speaker 1 (01:32:01):
Bad. Yeah, I mean, Ron, thank you very much. Your
right or that opinion is correct. The Bengals have a
long and you might argue distinguished, and you may argue
frustrating track record of not caving, of not flinching when
you back them into a corner and put a gun

(01:32:21):
to their head. For lack of a better way of
putting it, they don't. I've been following this franchise my
entire life. I've watched players hold out, I've watched players
ask for trades, I've watched players make public showings of
asking for trades. I watched two players request trades this offseason.

(01:32:42):
I've seen players demand new contracts. We once saw franchise
quarterbacks say I'll leave fifty mil on the table rather
than play for you. And unless it benefits them, as
was the case with Carson Palmer, they don't cave. They

(01:33:02):
don't cave out of public pressure. They don't cave because
of agent pressure. They don't cave. And you may credit
them for that, you may fault them for that. But
from the get go, with this entire situation, it has
been stated by many, if the idea is to create

(01:33:26):
an environment where the Bengals feel pressured to give Jamar
Chase what he's looking for, good luck. There may be
a lot of reasons why the Bengals want to get
this done before the start of the season, But those
reasons will be the bengals built in reasons. They're not
going to be reasons created because OMG fans are upset

(01:33:50):
or are getting criticized by the media or even oh no,
Jamar Chase is holding out of practices and dare I
say games twenty five away from six o'clock ron thank you?

Jamar Chase did not practice today. There's other news. Bengals
have claimed kJ Henry off waivers from the Commanders. He
was a twenty twenty three to fifth round pick of Washington,
played in ten games as a rookie. He played actually
played with Miles Murphy at Clemson four current defensive line

(01:34:38):
coach Marion Hobby who coached at Clemson. I guess he
didn't play for Marion Hobby, but he played with Miles Murphy.
How's that making this too complicated? Henry had a good
preseason with the Commanders. Ten pressures, a sack, nine hurries,
and fifty one pass rushing attempts PFF grade of eighty
two point nine. Samajp Ryn signs with the Kansas City Chiefs,

(01:35:02):
which is a bummer? Can I go with that? Can
I go with bummer? I think I can. Bengals made
some roster moves. Trayvon Williams has been released now. He
says on social media, It's just roster gymnastics, and I
believe him. But right now the Bengals have two healthy
backs on their roster. These twelve players have been signed
to the practice squad Nate Brooks, Cole Burgess, Devin Cochrane,

(01:35:24):
Dominique Davis, Jalen Davis, Cam Grandy Shaka, Hayward, Trey Hill,
Schedrick Jackson, PJ Jewles, Kendrick Pryor, and Logan Woodside. Congratulations
to those men. Meanwhile, the Reds and A's continue their
series at GABP tonight. Tonight's TBD pitcher is Fernando Cruz.

(01:35:45):
He will get the ball to start the game and
then the Reds will use a bunch of relievers because
I think they're gonna play every game like that the
rest of the season. Six forty tonight, seven hundred WLW.
Hopefully Tonight's Red's lineup has made well comes to you
thanks to Madewell Restration, Gonda made Well Restoration dot Com India.

Stevens Ellie's playing shorts thought tonight Stevenson is catching Freedolance
center Spencer Steeren left Santiago Espinal at third Dominic Smith
at first, Ahmed Rosario, who swung at ball FORDA and
the ballgame last night he is dhing and Will Benson
in right field batting ninth. Reds made some roster moves.
Evan Kravitz, lefty from Louisville. Lefty pitcher from Louisville called

(01:36:25):
up Casey Legumina has been sent down. Stuart Fairchild transferred
to the sixty day injured list. His season is over.
According to and if I am misattributing this, my apologies.
Sea Trent Rosecrans from the Athletic the first that I
saw to report that the Reds are gonna call up
Rhet Louder to pitch the night cap of that double

(01:36:45):
header on Friday. Rhet Louder was drafted by the Reds
out of Wake Forest with the seventh overall pick in
the twenty twenty three draft. Remember, he didn't pitch professionally
when he got drafted. The Reds didn't put him in
any competitive situations with any of their minor league teams,
So he has pitched in a grand total of twenty

(01:37:06):
two professional baseball games and exactly one above double A. Now,
when the Reds drafted him, there were some who believed
he could pitch for the big league club last year,
and so it stood a reason this was even something
was talked about during spring training. You know, maybe if

(01:37:26):
things go well, Rhet Louder could be in Cincinnati by September.
Let's face, he's here in large part because of well,
all the guys who have gone on the injured list
that are running out their bullpen guys. Rhet Louder is
going to pitch on Friday. He'll skip his turn in Louisville.
His one outing at Louisville, by the way, was terrific.
Six innings of shutout baseball, gave up just three hits.

(01:37:49):
He was very good to start the season at high
A Dayton and era of two eighty four. Some ups
and downs at Chattanooga. I think more ups than downs,
and his one outing at Louisville was terrific. So that'd
be fun. Friday night. Red Louder to a pitch for
the Reds in his big league debut in the second

(01:38:10):
game of that doubleheader against Milwaukee. Ah, there's been a
lot today. How much time do we have, Taran. We
have a Tony Pike season preview report. We got about
four minutes when we get to Tony four minutes. Mike,
you're on ESPN fifteen thirty. Good afternoon.

Speaker 15 (01:38:28):
Well, one thing for sure, you ain't getting no interviews
with Jamar for a long time.

Speaker 1 (01:38:34):
You know when I'm not gonna lose much leeve.

Speaker 15 (01:38:36):
Yeah, well you don't gon't have to, but you ain't
gonna get an I ain't worried about it. I know
you not a manager statue. This lay question is interesting
to me. Marty postulate this after. I really love Marty
and Tracy shows. Sometimes they get goofy, but uh huh,
I am larger. They're pretty funny, and I've marked a lot.

Speaker 1 (01:38:57):
Yeah, but.

Speaker 15 (01:39:01):
Marty's convinced he'd playing in center field. But he's But
but what they need to do and what they're gonna do,
I can't image, and they wouldn't with somebody of this
potential is just to ask him where he wants to play,
and that's where he's gonna play. Maybe I have any
hope of keeping him.

Speaker 1 (01:39:22):
Yeah, now, now it's worth pointing really quick. It's worth
pointing out because this, the O'Neill Cruz situation in Pittsburgh
is what triggered a lot of the conversation. The Pirates
didn't ask O'Neil Cruz, do you want to move to
center field? In fact, he was reportedly upset about it.
At the end of the day, he's the employee either
the employer. He has to go and do what they want.

(01:39:42):
I mean, that's that's how it works in life. But
they didn't ask him. Now do I do I believe
in allowing the player to have some input? Absolutely? Uh,
But but do I make the decision his and his only? Well,
that's not how it works, and I don't think that's
how it should work. But I do believe that if

(01:40:02):
you said to Elliet, where do you want to play?
He's a short stop. All he's done is a professional
baseball players play in the infield. I would imagine if
he really had a desire to play the outfield, they
would have tried him at some point out there, and
they haven't done that. So I'm led to believe he
wants to play where he has played at an above
average level all season long.

Speaker 15 (01:40:24):
I agree, But boy, would he be a tremendous center
fielder with that range and that arm.

Speaker 1 (01:40:29):
Sure. Well, here's what I know. I know from a
curiosity perspective, that I'd love to see him just run
in the outfield like a gazelle and cover all that ground.
But do I know that he would be a tremendous outfielder.

Speaker 7 (01:40:44):
No?

Speaker 17 (01:40:45):
And like.

Speaker 1 (01:40:48):
This isn't twenty eighteen where the Reds have no Like,
I want to win next year. I want twenty five
to be less about experimentation and more about play Iraq
was and guys starring in the roles that they have
been groomed to star in. I don't go into next
Let's let's try some guys out man scrut That's what

(01:41:12):
you do if you're destined to lose. I don't wanna
win next year, and so hey, let's use the season
to give Elliott tried a position where he's never played.
That doesn't sound like something that you do if you're
really serious about trying to win, what you do for
the outfield is you go and get outfielders instead of

(01:41:32):
trying to plug a square peg into a round helly, Jonathan,
indy out there, how about use outfielders. Let's do this.
Let's let's bring in catchers who catch, infielders who play
the infield, and outfielders who are outfielders. That to me,
is not that novel of concept.

Speaker 15 (01:41:53):
How about in the latest room, I've wort and then
I got a weather report on Cincinnati from California. I've
heard that that McClean wants to get back to California
so bad that he's kind of making up symptoms. So
you can play for the Angels and Doggies with the
padre's your boss, de Lucke. Yeah, and here's the latest

(01:42:16):
weather report for the Natty from my sister who wasn't
for Thomas. I quickly it is pouring, raining and lightning,
So no red probably tonight.

Speaker 1 (01:42:24):
Just let it cut well. You know, sometimes it might
be raining at five forty eight, Mike, thank you, It
might be raining at five forty eight, and then it's
not raining at six forty. We'll see. They got they gotta,
they gotta. They got a tough couple of days. They
don't need another. They like tomorrow with doubleheader. They have
a five to ten game, a full Thomas rad concert,
a double header on Friday, a game on Saturday, Shaquille

(01:42:44):
O'Neal wrapping on Saturday night, then another game, a day
game on Sunday, and then a day game on Monday.
What they do not need is another baseball game sandwiched
in that timeframe. Tony Pike. Next, What's for dinner tonight?

Speaker 4 (01:42:58):
Take out again?

Speaker 9 (01:43:00):
Remember your last order, Saggi Bryes with a side of
twelve dollar fees plus the one hour delivery time.

Speaker 7 (01:43:06):
The official home of the Bengals.

Speaker 1 (01:43:08):
Yea Tony Pike pack with this for a season preview report.
There's been a lot going on for the day after
the roster being paired down to fifty three, the season
still more than a week and a half away, A
lot happening. Let's start with Let's start with who they've added.
kJ Henry, an edge rusher from the Washington Commanders who
during the preseason had ten pressures, one sack, and nine

(01:43:31):
hurries in just fifty one pass rushing snaps and earned
a really good Pro Football Focused grade of eighty two
point nine. We could spend a lot of time on
who else might have been available, but if you needed
an edge rusher, this seemed to be a pretty smart
pickup by Cincinnati, right absolutely.

Speaker 3 (01:43:49):
And I still think a guy that's got good football
to play. You know, it's not like he's washed in
any sense of the way. He's got a lot of
good football ahead of him coming into his own and
I think he's a guy that can play multiple spots
where he can play against a rounn, he can get
after the passer. He was actually the one that caused
the Jacoby Brissette injury when he sacked him against the

(01:44:09):
New England Patriots. So look, I know we talked yesterday
about the defensive end spot in general, and they kept
four on the fifty three man.

Speaker 6 (01:44:18):
One was a rookie.

Speaker 3 (01:44:19):
I still thought they needed to do something there, and
they go out and do it, and you know, it's
one of those moves Mower. I don't see a lot
of people questioning it. I see more of that are
on the same boat of Yes, this makes a lot
of sense. This seems to be a good move for
this team and for Luanna Rumo's defense.

Speaker 1 (01:44:35):
All right, now the part where we have to talk
about Jamar Chase. You feel bad for Zach Taylor. I
mean I have felt bad for him this entire time,
but listening to him today, here is a guy who
is squarely stuck in the middle. He is powerless against
really doing anything in regards to Jamar's contract forcing him
to practice, and yet he has to talk about this

(01:44:56):
every single day. He came off as at least a
little exact aspirated, and I cannot blame him.

Speaker 3 (01:45:02):
Yeah, my first thought when this happened was nothing about
Jamar Chase on the field. It was about Zach Taylor.
And you came on sincey three to sixty for quick
hits at the end of today's show and you said
the same thing he said. You know, either this is
a situation where a deal is close, or this is
a situation that's going to make Zach Taylor look bad.
And with the words of Zach Taylor yesterday about him

(01:45:25):
being ready to go week one and he's going to
be practicing today and going forward, and to not only
not practice, but to show up thirteen minutes late to
an NFL practice, to come in street closed by all accounts,
to not spend time talking to many people during practice,
just kind of being on your own and watching Zach
because we've not yet seen mo, we've not seen Jamar

(01:45:48):
talk to anybody.

Speaker 1 (01:45:49):
We've seen Zach.

Speaker 3 (01:45:50):
Have to be the microphone here and to watch Zach
have to stand up there, take questions and put it
on himself. I misspoke. I shouldn't have done that.
