Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thank you for listening, and
I hope you're having an unbelievable Thursday. It's my Friday,
so I keep thinking it's Friday, and I got a
sense for a lot of folks listening and our massive
audience of sports fans.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Tomorrow is the first.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Day of a four D eight weekend, at least, I hope,
so we have a lot of ground of cover. Callum
Williams Apple TV MLS season pass is going to join us.
FC Cincinnati is home on Saturday night for a tilt
against Montreal the Orange and Blue, coming off that loss
to Miami last WEEKND. Callum's got the match. He's going
to join us in fifteen minutes. One of our favorite
segments of late summer every year is when we have

(00:43):
on Mike Sando, who's the guy from the Athletic who
talks to like every coach, every GM in the league,
and based on their input, he separates every NFL quarterback
into tears. He's going to join us at five twenty
plus Chad Brenda at four to twenty. I have an
off air favorite to ask Chad, and that was me
reminding myself you see opening up the season on Saturday

(01:06):
against Towson. Full show preview on X right now go
watch it at Mowaker Thanks to Emery Federal Credit Union,
your credit union with heart since nineteen thirty nine. Go
to EMERYFCU dot org. Travon Williams is back. I'm back
on the trade train. Travon Williams is back. Probably not
the most significant piece of news as it relates to

(01:28):
the Bengals, because we can't talk about the Bengals unless
we talk about Jamar Chase, who again today is not practicing.
Again today he is at practice. Zach Taylor again today
had to talk about Jamar Chase. Here is the head
coach of the Bengals, answering questions about his wide receiver
who's not practicing.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
We'll see, there'll probably be this very similar to yesterday.
I'm not gonna make any predictions. He's been at every meeting,
so you know, he knows everything. He's been in the
system now for three years that he's played it in
the fourth year now and so again he knows everything.
He's very on top of it.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
There you go, we'll see same as yesterday. Well, yesterday
Jamar didn't practice. I'm sorry the Bengals don't provide the
technology that allows us to hear the questions.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
So there you go. No Jamar today.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
And Zach.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
He sounded very serious. You know, I'm sure it's got
to be exhausting. I'm sure it's got to be fatiguing
on some level when you go to a situation like
that and you know the first questions are going to
be about Jamar, and frankly, the only answers that anybody
wants to hear are the answers about Jamar. But you're

(02:50):
paid to not really give any answers, and you're not
in a position to really give any answers because you
don't really control any of this.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
You have no control.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
NFL coaches are, i think, by nature, control free, and
it's got to be frustrating from that standpoint. I don't
know if Zach is among the more control freaky people,
if that's the right way to put it in the NFL,
but NFL head coaches, by nature are control freaks. This
head coach, a successful head coach, has no control over
this situation, and that has to be frustrating. You don't

(03:21):
have to do what I'm going to do, and if
you want to do it differently by all means.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
But here's what I'm going to do.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
The Bengals play a game in ten days. I'm going
to assume until we see otherwise that Jamar Chase is
not going to play in that game. Tony said it
to me. He and I were talking off Aaron. We're
gonna get to it in our season preview report coming

(03:53):
up at three forty five, four forty five, and five
forty five. This is not trending in the right direction.
It may have the conclusion that everybody wants, which is
a new contract. Soon Jamar is on the field and
he scores four touchdowns against the Patriots, and he's the
NFL Offensive Player of the Year. The Bengals win the
Super Bowl, and every everybody lives happily ever after. Maybe

(04:17):
maybe that's the outcome. Maybe that's the outcome. Maybe we
find out tomorrow Jamar is practicing and he makes a
public statement that he's gonna play in the game, and
a contract comes and we're good. Maybe that happens on
Labor Day.

Speaker 5 (04:30):
No.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Paul Danner Junior.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
On this show a week and a half ago talked about, Yeah,
Labor Day is gonna be when something happens, and that's
something for him was gonna be he practices, and maybe
he does, but until he does, and really even until
he does, and I think offers something concrete to suggest
that he's gonna play, I am going to operate under
the assumption. And I hope I'm wrong that Jamar is

(04:55):
not going to play against the Patriots, because let's be
let's be honest, that feels like the direction it's moving toward.
And I know I'm repeating some of what Tony and
Austin talked about here, but it's today's the third to
last day of August. So when late July was here
and training camp started and Jamar was not practicing, boneheads

(05:19):
like me asked, all right, when do I have to
make a big deal out of this?

Speaker 2 (05:24):
When do I have.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
To worry that this is actually really going to have
an impact on the season. Not that him missing practice
has no impact on the season, which is something we
have to discuss, but when when do I have to
when is this going to be a real thing? When
is this something that I really have to focus in on?
And the answer was, well, really late in August, when

(05:46):
cutdown day is coming gone, when it's time to focus
in on the first game. That's when here we are,
and after practicing a couple of times, now he's not.
And again Zach Taylor said yesterday he's healthy. Nobody suggested
or stated that he's hurt. So it's the continuation of

(06:09):
a hold in, and the only question that mattered during
the hold in, I guess hold in one point zero.
The first hold in was is he willing to miss games?

Speaker 2 (06:20):
He may not be.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
He may have told all of his teammates, buddy, I'll
be there week one. Zach Taylor two days ago said
he's gonna play week one. But well, as we saw
on Tuesday, and I guess as we saw yesterday, maybe
Zach doesn't know nearly as much as he would like,
or maybe as much as he should, about his star
wide receivers.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
So I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna assume.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
He's not gonna play the first game, which means then
you have to talk about whether or not he's gonna
play in.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
The second game.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
I'm not gonna go as far to assume he's not
gonna play against Kansas City, but as soon as he
doesn't play the first game, if that's the case, then
we have to really talk about wait a minute today
to go to Air go Ahead Stadium and try to
beat the Chiefs without Jamar Chase. First things first, Bengals
Pats a week from Sunday. You don't have to do
what I'm doing. In fact, it might be better if

(07:12):
you don't. For me, I am assuming the Bengals will
have to win that football game, which I think they
will without Jamar Chase. Here's the good news. Okay, here's
the good news this, Jamar Chase. Think to you, maybe unsettling,
maybe upsetting, Maybe something that you're tired of hearing about

(07:32):
and I cannot blame you for that. Might be something
you're over, might be something where you've chosen to take
a side and your team, Jamar or your your team Bengals, regardless,
I've got really good news for you.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Joe Burrow is the Bengals quarterback.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
Now to a degree, he's gone through his most normal
training camp ever, a normal training camp would have been
well obviously not coming off surgery, but also like going
through training camp with Jamar Chase. That's the most normal
training camp. So he didn't have the most normal training camp,
but relatively speaking, compared to other training camps. He just

(08:10):
had his most normal training camp. Uh, they have Joe
Burrow and to me, like we talk about Tier one quarterbacks,
Mike Sando is gonna be on this show in just
over two hours discussing his quarterback tiers. T I E.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
R s.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
And NFL people coaches and execs. Put Joe Burrow in
that upper tier with two other guys, Patrick Mahomes, who
you could argue was in a tier by himself and
Josh Allen. The Burrow selection has gotten some pushback because
of injury, which is fine, so tier one guy. Also
a year ago when we were wondering, well, when's the

(08:51):
deal gonna get done? And then the deal got done
and we all celebrated. Here's why, Here's why I have
said this, going back to an Andy Dalton got his
contract extension. A franchise quarterback is a trump card. A
franchise quarterback is the fail safe. A franchise quarterback is

(09:11):
the constant emit a sea of change and chaos and uncertainty.
And if your quarterback can't handle those things and win
in spite of those things, well then you don't have
a franchise quarterback. You may be paying a guy to
be a franchise quarterback, but you don't have a franchise quarterback.

(09:31):
So to me, this is why I wanted the Bengals
to draft Joe Burrow. It's why all of us wanted
the Bengals to draft Joe Burrow. It's why all of
us wanted the Bengals to ensure that he was here
for at least a while through the rest of the decade.
It's because, you know what, A lot of stuff is
gonna happen. There's gonna be sometimes where players are unhappy.

(09:52):
There's gonna be injuries, there's gonna be coaching changes, there's
gonna be staff changes. There's gonna be a lot of
stuff that happens. My trump card is number nine. If
you don't believe that number nine is the trump card,
then you think the Bengals have the wrong quarterback. I'm
willing to bet I can't find anybody who believes the
Bengals have the wrong quarterback. So distraction, Yeah, maybe is

(10:14):
it less than ideal? Sure, Jamar not practicing and maybe
not playing. Could it get in the way of team success? Yeah,
the Bengals are better with Jamar than they're not. But
my expectations for the season are completely unchanged. My expectations
are Bengals make the playoffs, compete for a division title,

(10:34):
and be one of the teams that's got a legitimate
chance to win the whole thing once January mid January
gets here. I feel that way today, I felt that
way two months ago. I'm gonna feel that way as
long as Number nine as the quarterback and playing well.
And while you could talk about his injury history, there's
nothing to suggest that he's not going to play well.

(10:55):
They've got a trump card. We can get mad about Jamar,
we can debate what Jamar is doing and it's merits.
We can feel sorry for Zach Taylor, which I do.
We can take sides which I've kind of been reluctant
to do. The trump card and the reason we should
all feel pretty good about these and how it's ultimately
going to turn out Number nine. And if you don't

(11:16):
think he's a trump card, then the Bengals have bigger
issues than whether or not Jamar Chase is practicing. Your
comments are welcome. At five point three seven, four nine
fifteen thirty Reds are playing an early game today. They
lose again last night. A few thoughts on a season
that is it's gone from disappointing and frustrating to one

(11:37):
that's kind of taken on an entirely different shape altogether.
That later on, our buddy Lee Sterling is going to
be on the show in fifteen minutes, help us make
some money week one of college football Paramount Sports. Lee
is awesome. He made us a lot of money last year.
Try to make us some more money. Coming up in
fifteen minutes. But first, FC Cincinnati re entered and last player.

(12:00):
We started MLS play last Saturday, and I don't think
they played terribly. They just didn't score any goals. Now
the race for the Supporter Shield, the math is getting really,
really difficult. Pat Noonan's got bigger issues than that they
play Montreal on Saturday. Callum Williams MLS Season Pass on
Apple TV joins us.

Speaker 6 (12:17):
Next Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic.

Speaker 7 (12:24):
From the UC Health Traffic Center at the UC Gardner
Neuroscience Institute.

Speaker 1 (12:29):
You can have the most entertaining games of the entire
MLS season. That was their seventh consecutive win, a four
to three road triumph over Toronto, And so we had
Callum on right before that game Callum Williams Apple TV
MLS season pass, and boy, things were going really well,
and we were talking about FC Cincinnati maybe being maybe
not better than last year, but at least as good

(12:50):
and having the potential to win the Supporter Shield. And
over the last uh, what's six seven weeks, we have
stopped talking about those things. They've got to get back
on track. They take on Montreal all at home on
Saturday night. Callumul will be on the call. Those were
fun times when we talked. I kind of wish we
were exploring some of the same themes. It's good to
have you, though, how are you?

Speaker 5 (13:10):
Yeah good, Thanks for having me.

Speaker 8 (13:12):
And you're right, it seems like a very very different time,
doesn't it. It's almost like Cincinnati season has been split
into two separate campaigns.

Speaker 5 (13:19):
And speaking to Pat noon.

Speaker 8 (13:21):
And earlier on today, he was saying that it very
much feels as though it's been inconsistent over the course
of the last four or five six weeks, and I
think that's fair to say.

Speaker 9 (13:30):
So.

Speaker 8 (13:31):
I view this game against Montreal, though, honestly, as a
major opportunity for FC Cincinnati, and I said that with
all due respect to see at Montreal, you can't lose
five nil at home if you are Montreal and expect
to go and find anything. It's FC Cincinnati regardless of
their home form this season, So I'll be very interested
to see what the approaches from Montreal over the course
of the.

Speaker 5 (13:51):
Next few days.

Speaker 1 (13:52):
Yeah, I mean, look at we use the term get
right game right. Like FC Cincinnati came out against Miami.
I'm not sure they played terribly. They just didn't score
any goals, and you know, that's an entirely different issue.
I think it's something else entirely though, if even if
they get three points, if we don't see a better showing,
just not just in terms of how they played against Miami,

(14:13):
but based on what we saw in League's Cup, based
on what we saw from FC Cincinnati before League's Cost
I'm as interested in how they look as I am
the actual result on whether they get three points on
Saturday night.

Speaker 5 (14:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (14:24):
Absolutely, And I think every FC Cincinnati fan has a
right to feel.

Speaker 5 (14:28):
That way as well.

Speaker 8 (14:29):
And Pat Noon and again, we spoke to him earlier
on today and he said that, look, we are fully
aware of how important this game is, especially with the
international break over the course of the next few days.

Speaker 5 (14:39):
As well, it means that.

Speaker 8 (14:40):
The MLS teams will have a short break before they
really get going in the final stretch. But it also
means that a lot of players will be heading off
for international duty with their respective countries as well, so
it will mean a little bit of a break and
maybe a break from a psychological point of view as well.
So pat Noon and the players and the staff know
how importance a victory is a Montreal and quite frankly,

(15:01):
it's a victory that should be expected. And again I
say that with all your respect to see if Montreal,
who have had you know, an okay campaign.

Speaker 5 (15:09):
It started off very well where they won their first
two road.

Speaker 8 (15:13):
Games and they haven't won a road game since then,
by the way, since match day three of the MLS campaign.
But that they've irritated and frustrated many a team on
the road this year. I was fortunate enough to commentate
on their two to draw at Red Bull New York
several weeks ago, and they.

Speaker 5 (15:28):
Did just that.

Speaker 8 (15:29):
They infuriated a very very good and comfortable Red Bull
New York team. But let's not forget the only team
in Major League Soccer. Let's let's eat to lose it
at home as well, So Montreal are familiar with how
to irritate in this league. Montreal are familiar with how
to get results in this league. The head coach dot
Encoretoire has them playing a way that he likes to play,

(15:52):
playing out of the back, building up and building through
the channels and through the lines, which they've been successful
in certain air of the season and doing so against
certain opponents. But this is a very different Montreal team
to the team that beats Cinternati several months ago. It's
a team that, as we mentioned and insinuated, have gone

(16:14):
through a little bit of a torrid spell from a
form point of view.

Speaker 5 (16:17):
But also they've had a very busy.

Speaker 8 (16:19):
Summer as well, and they let go of a handful
of players, including Matthew Chuanier who transferred over to f
C Zurick in the Swiss Super League, their star player
and club captain. But they've also brought in the likes
of Caden Clark from Minnesota United, who comes with a
hefty weight of expectation on his shoulders. And there's an
abundance of players that have come in that have been

(16:39):
brought in to revitalize this Montreal team. So I just wonder,
you know, after the five no home loss to New
England Revolution, which was a shock to just about everybody
who covers Major League soccer across the world.

Speaker 5 (16:51):
I'm interested to see what sort of approach they.

Speaker 8 (16:53):
Have now against f C Cincinnati, because as we've sort
of insinuated already, all the pressure, all the expectation now rightly.
Show will be on FA Sin Sinnati on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
Evening FC Cincinnati hosting CF Montreal Apple TV MLS season Pass.
Callum Williams, the call you had that match I mentioned before.
You were nice enough to come on with me right
before FC Cincinnati wins at Toronto. A great game, a
great game. The roster has evolved, that the shape of
the team has changed. The transfer window had something to

(17:23):
do with that. Obviously injuries have had something to do
with that. The makeup is different. The math right now
for FC Cincinnati is hard if you're looking at the
top of the Eastern Conference and the race for the
Supporter Shield. But obviously there are the playoffs and there's
the benefit of time to get these pieces. I think
connected better and looking more like they did when you
called that match against Toronto, which was the end of

(17:45):
a seven game winning streak. So Pat Noonan has got
his hands full, but it feels to me like he's
got the right pieces just moving forward. Do you like
what they have, especially given what they did and maybe
to a degree, didn't do during the transfer window.

Speaker 8 (17:59):
Yeah, I mean, look, I was surprised with the signing
of Joe Keny. I knew that Pat Noonan was in
the market for an attacking player. He told me how
such afterwards in the little corporate area at Tiquel Stadium. Afterwards,
my partner and I Kayle and Carr were fortunate enough
to commentate on the Round of thirty two Leagues Cup
victory over Santos Lagoona, and we spent some time with

(18:22):
Pat Noonan and the assistant coach Dominicanier afterwards, and the
insinuation was yet were still very much active and looking
for players. And so what they've done is I think
they've hadded complimentary pieces with the likes of Joe Keni,
with the likes of Teenagerdeba, who was announced just the
other day as a player for FC Cincinnati. But look,
I think the core group has already set and has

(18:44):
been for a long time. They've just had to make
some adjustments because of the amount of injuries that they've sustained,
particularly towards the back line. And I think it's a
good team. I think last year was better and I
think everybody is aware of that with the goals they scored,
but they have at their disposal that they haven't had
a natural goalscorer this year as they did as they

(19:04):
have done over the last couple of years. Really with
Brandon Vasquez and co. It's obviously been troublesome for them
not having Luciano a Costa as available as they wanted
him to be. Over the course of the last couple
of weeks, he's had this troubling foot issue that's really
caused him problems, and a lot of people on the
coaching staff and the medical staff thought he was going

(19:26):
to be back and available now for this stretch and
this big run heading into the postseason. The question mark
is whether he's going to be available for the majority
of it, and if he is available, what sort of
a Luciano Acosta r FC Cincinnati going to have because
he's not going to be one hundred percent. So everything
went through him, so much went through him at the
very least, and so now I think it's down to

(19:47):
the supporting cast that really step up, and we've seen
the likes of Luca Areshano doing just that over the
course of the last couple of weeks.

Speaker 5 (19:54):
And I wonder, now is Pat.

Speaker 8 (19:56):
Noonan going to play him a little further up the field?
Is he going to play him as of the dual
tens as we've seen from time to time with FC Cincinnati,
because he did so against Santos Lagoona and he scored
a marvelous goal, And so I wonder we'll players like
that now step up and take responsibility, because that's the
one thing again that Pat Newton insinuated is that there
has been a slight lack of leadership over the course

(20:17):
of the last six to seven weeks, and a lot
of that is because of the absence of Matt Maasko
and Nick Haglins to.

Speaker 5 (20:23):
A certain degree as well. They were very vocal and very.

Speaker 8 (20:25):
Supportive, but Nick Haglin's I think has been a miss.
Most of the people realize as well, but certainly Matt maasco.
But bat Newton insinuated that they need to win. They
need to win on Saturday, but they need to do
it with an intensity as well, moving into the last
portion of the campaign.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
Callum, that was awesome. I appreciate the time. Have a
great call on Saturday. Hopefully this season our pass will
cross again.

Speaker 5 (20:47):
Thanks so much, Absolutely sounds good. Thank you for having me.

Speaker 1 (20:50):
You got an FC Cincinnati hosting CF Montreal on Saturday
night at seven thirty. That match available Apple TV MLS
season past. Callum Williams and Kaylan Carr are on the call.
Of course, you can listen to the match on ESPN
fifteen thirty as well. Lee Sterling's gonna make us some
coin Week one college football wagering.

Speaker 6 (21:10):
Next Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 7 (21:15):
Traffic from the UC Health Traffic Center at the UC
Gardner Neuroscience Institute. You can access the leading brains make.

Speaker 1 (21:23):
Us some money on the college first weekend of college football.
But the sports headlines at four thirty five, I'm gonna
have to take very very seriously, very like not blow
through them, but like really talk, you know, do.

Speaker 2 (21:37):
Them like I'm a real sportscaster.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
Sports headlines are a service of Kelsey Chevrolet, home of
lifetime powertrain protection and guaranteed credit approval. Go at kelseyshev
dot com. Really quick, No Jamar Chase a practice, Trayvon
Williams is back on the roster, McKinley Jackson goes on.
Ir Reds play the A's at five ten today looking
to avoid getting swept, and the Florence Yaws play their
last home game against Joliet.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
Now, Lee Sterling is here.

Speaker 1 (22:00):
He has been a part of this show for years
and has made us so much money during pro and
college football season. We love having him. Paramount sports dot
com is his website. His ex feet is at Paramount Sports,
and it's so great to have him back.

Speaker 4 (22:15):
Lee.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
What is going on?

Speaker 10 (22:17):
I'm ready to go. This can be I think the
greatest college football season ever. I mean think about it.
You can be sitting fifteenth, twentieth, twenty fifth, and you've
got a couple games up to play. You run the table.
You got a chance to get in the playoffs. So
I told my wife, get that motor home ready. I'm
a Miami fan. So we're sitting about fifteenth or twentieth
and we run the table. We're going to get in

(22:38):
that motor home and travel as far as we can go.

Speaker 2 (22:41):
All Right, I like it.

Speaker 5 (22:42):
I'm with you.

Speaker 1 (22:43):
I think this is going to be a fascinating season.
Everybody's got access to the national Championship. And as much
as there's a lot of conference realignment that I don't like,
I think it is going to create some really fun matchups.
Let's talk about Week one. Let me begin with my
beloved Bearcats. With nearly four dozen new players, hosting an
FCS school. They only won one home game last year.

(23:05):
It was against an FCS school. I think they're gonna
win the game. Can they cover nearly five touchdowns?

Speaker 10 (23:12):
Last three years they beat up on FCS opponents Eastern
Michigan sixty six thirteen, Kansas stateho's Division one team now
sixty three ten, and not a bad Murray State team
forty two to seven. I love the switch to the
three to three to five defense towsand five and six
last year, but minus one hundred and seven yards per

(23:33):
game and conference play and Towson loses for the top
five tacklers on defense which allowed thirty or more points
seven to twelve games. They're gonna win. They're going to
cover the right team's favorite Cincinnati forty five ten.

Speaker 1 (23:47):
All right, So now the first FBS school they play
is Pittsburgh, another team with a lot of transfers and
one of the three teams they beat last season. Last
year of the game was in Pittsburgh. Now it's in
since Pitt's gonna play an SECS opponent more than a
three touchdown favorite against Ken State.

Speaker 2 (24:05):
Do you like the Panthers new offense here?

Speaker 10 (24:08):
Play fast system is what they call it under cade Bell.
I'm aging myself here. I played against Kerwin Bell in
the state semifinal game and lost. So Kerwin Bell is
his dad. They averaged thirty seven and a half points
per game in five hundred and four yards per game
last year running backs, I mean they got a flew

(24:31):
of them. Rodney Hampton him and averaged over four point
five yards per Carrie. Last year, Western Carolina transfer Desmond
reed nine starts. He had combined seventeen twenty three yards
the last two years. I'm just not sure that Nate
Yarnel is the quarterback? Is this final answer here? For

(24:52):
this team? Defense? Only one difference maker on defense I
see Donovan McMillan, Kenny Johnson kick returner, but the special
teams are questionable. Other than that, Kent State lost by
twenty five to Washington thirty to Oklahoma two years ago
when they were five and seven. I see a similar
team pitt wins thirty six to sixteen. But I'm gonna

(25:15):
hold my nose and take Kent State, all right.

Speaker 1 (25:17):
Lee Sterling with us Paramount sports dot com. Penn State,
which you know, James Franklin can never get to the
college football playoffs, so they expand the field for him.
We'll see if you can crack the top twelve. There
are more than a touchdown favorite against West Virginia, a
surprising team from last year that won a lot of
close games. I'm skeptical about them as the Big twelve

(25:38):
season unfolds. Do you like the Nitney Lyons laying eight?

Speaker 10 (25:43):
I feel the same way about them. Also, I think
that they have a certain ceiling and I just don't
think that they can get above that glass ceiling. And
Penn State, they're going to beat the bad and mediocre
teams won every game last year by more than seventeen
points except for one game. They won the game against
Western Virginia by twenty. I mean, Drew Lari he's not

(26:04):
going to beat Oregon. He's not going to beat Ohio
State in my opinion, but he threw for three twenty
five and three touchdowns on West Virginia, and people think
of West Virginia having this great home field advantage. Not
so fast. Here six and seven is a home dog
here under Neil Brown. The right team is favorite Penn
State thirty one twenty at.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
Least earl in Paramount Sports your free play of the
week Georgia and Clemson.

Speaker 10 (26:28):
Wow this big there's four great games on tactics this weekend.
You want to get Georgia and Clemson on me. Be
one of the first five callers called eight hundred, four
hundred nine seven four to one. Give you Georgia Clemson
on me. My thirty first year, we won twenty nine
out of thirty years, first time in seven years. We
rate our game from ten to fifty units. We have

(26:49):
a forty or unit or larger release. You want to
get it. One hundred and forty seven dollars is going
to get you ten to twelve plays this weekend. We're
sixty five and twenty three on these game aimed eight
nine her Paramount sports dot Com love to have you
along for the ride.

Speaker 1 (27:06):
All right, We've got you along for the ride again
this season. We'll talk next weekly. Thanks so much, Thanks
so much, eight hundred four hundred nine seven four to one,
and it sounded like he had like an old fashioned
phone that you actually hang up.

Speaker 2 (27:20):
Tony Pike Season preview report.

Speaker 1 (27:22):
Next what employers like seven hundred wlw Entire Discounters Too's
Delta Dental of Ohio employees can access the nation's largest
selection of individually contracted tennis. It's the second last day
of season preview reports. Tony Pike is here. I'm not
here tomorrow. So this is the last time.

Speaker 2 (27:40):
Who's in for you? Chad?

Speaker 1 (27:41):
Okay that you and I get a chance to do
these seasons.

Speaker 11 (27:44):
Started reports for the season with Chad Well, It's all
come full circle.

Speaker 2 (27:48):
That's full circle. It's a sad incredible it is.

Speaker 1 (27:51):
It's uh, you know, maybe we can put together a
best of sure, a best of season preview reports.

Speaker 2 (27:55):
I make a lot of people mad, just do negative.

Speaker 1 (27:58):
Probably. Trayvon Williams is back. Yes, his absence lasted a day.
He said, them cutting him yesterday was roster gymnastics. He
knew something. They put me Kelly Jackson on the uninjured reserve.
So you've got that, but you've got Travon Williams. I'm
less interested in Travon Williams. One of the unknowns about
this team is number one, how they deploy the running backs.

(28:19):
Zach Taylor talked about it today. Number Two what kind
of production they're going to get from the running backs?
And I think number three and this ties into production.
Are they going to be capable of getting more explosive
plays from their running backs which they couldn't last year.
Go ahead and speak to any of those things.

Speaker 11 (28:35):
Well, one, I do think they're capable of more explosive
plays because I think both backs, especially Chase Brown, is explosive.
Zach Taylor used the term earlier today interchangeable, and I
think that's really how I have viewed it all camp.
You know, there are camp battles that have taken place
if you wanted to get down to nuts and bolts
running backs of camp battle. But I never thought it

(28:55):
was like seventy thirty based on the starter. It was
always going to be like fifty two to forty eight.
Thought with who's going to get a lion's share of
the reps, they're going to go off feel, they're going
to go off who's the hot hand. And what's unique
is there's a lot of running back rooms in the
NFL that offer like that thunder lightning dynamic, or you
got like the big play threat and then you got

(29:16):
the short yardage threat.

Speaker 4 (29:17):
Yea.

Speaker 11 (29:18):
I feel like both backs are pretty much the same
in their skill set. They're both given the opportunity to
play three downs four downs if needed. They both can
get short yardage reps, they both can take two minute reps.
They're both effective in the passing game. So I do
it's a unique way to approach a running back room
in today's NFL, But I think they have almost a
carbon copy of two of the same player in the

(29:39):
running back room, and you're just gonna kind of split
up reps accordingly.

Speaker 2 (29:42):
Well, and you reference this.

Speaker 1 (29:43):
What I think I like about Chase and Zach Moss
is with neither guy, are you automatically crossing off the
list something they can't do right? And nothing against Joe Mixon,
who was a fine player here, but toward the end
it was either there was two or three things that
we just said he can do well that limits you
when he's on the field. It tips your hand perhaps
when he comes off the field. And so you know,

(30:06):
I like the fact that say what you want about
their level of skill set and where these guys are
in the pantheon of running backs. The Bengals are never
going to be a run first team as long as
Number nine as that quarterback. But at the very least
with either guy, are we saying, you know, you can't
put him on the field on third down, or he
just know what forget about asking him to block an

(30:27):
oncoming pass rusher, or cannot be on the field in
two minute. I like the fact that you could use
both players in almost any situation.

Speaker 11 (30:35):
Yeah, they want to be more under center, they want
to run the ball at times from under center, but
they're also trying to set up play action pass. They're
trying to get out of the pocket. And we mentioned
this with tight end a lot last year. If you
do have your full complement of weapons Chase Higgins, whoever
wide receiver number three is, Mike Gasicki, that's a lot
for a defense to navigate and the ability for both

(30:57):
of these running backs to one stay in and protect
when because some of the defense's answer will be more pressure,
and both of these running backs have a knowledge of
protections and how to protect. They also both possess the
ability to get out of the backfield whatever need be
and make plays in the passing game, and I frame
it in the same sense we talk about tight ends.
With this team a lot, there's only so many guys

(31:18):
you can double team, which means favorable matchups in one
on one situations for the running back when they're used
in the passing game. And unlike you said in years past,
it's not like you have to run guys on the
field on third down and tip your hand with what's coming.
I think it allows for a little bit more of
concealing what they want to do on offense, a little
more of the element of surprise, and I think all

(31:39):
those things together, it's not going to be a top
five running back room in the NFL, but I think
it's going to be a solid group.

Speaker 1 (31:45):
Yeah, I'm with you, Tony, Thank you so much. Tony
Pike joins us at four forty five. That'll be the
obligatory segment about Jamar Chase, which if you haven't heard,
not practicing again today. I think the thing about the
running backs, and I've been asked often from people who
maybe don't follow the Bengals nearly as closely, well, why
would they move on from Joe Mixon?

Speaker 2 (32:04):
And there are a lot of different reasons.

Speaker 1 (32:05):
I think the primary one was for all of Joe's
accomplishments here, for as productive of players he may still be,
the Bengals did not get explosion from the running game
last year. And if you have watched over the last
couple of seasons, We've talked about it often during the year,

(32:26):
like is it kind of time to move on here?

Speaker 2 (32:29):
Understand what we know? Understanding what we know about, you know.

Speaker 1 (32:31):
Running backs and how they age, and Joe's been in
the league for seven years now. They're looking for more explosiveness.
They're never going to be a run first team. I
kind of view Moss and Chase coming into the season
as one in one a and we'll see if one
separates himself from the other. But I also feel like
it's it's not so much about Okay, Zack Moss is

(32:52):
better than Joe Mixon or worse than Joe Mixon. It's
about Zach Moss and Chase Brown possessed the capability to
be on the field more because you're not crossing items
off the list of things they can't do. And as
much as Joe was a huge asset to this team,

(33:13):
certainly when they were bad early in his career, and
then when they got good later in his career. As
the years went on, it just it felt like we
were crossing more stuff off the list of things that
he just can't do. Well, you don't want him on
the field in two minutes, okay, well you know you

(33:34):
don't want him on the field. You don't want him
on the field in situations where he's going to have
to be involved in pass protection, Okay, I mean it
just it got to the point we even watched two
years ago in situations where samaj p Ryan was the
guy they were using to close out games in the

(33:55):
fourth quarter where they had a healthy lead. And so,
none of this is a knock on Joe. Joe what
makes them might go to Houston and have a terrific
season for a team that has a chance to be really,
really good. But it just felt like over the last
couple of years we talked more about what you can't
ask Joe to do than what you can ask Joe
to do.

Speaker 2 (34:14):
And Tony has talked about this a bunch.

Speaker 1 (34:16):
When you put him on the field when there's a
list of things he can't do, that tells the other
team's defense, Well, here's what the Bengals are doing because
here are the things Joe can do, and so the
Bengals are probably gonna do one of those things, if
that makes sense. And so what I think is nice
about the personnel they have at the position is there
doesn't seem to be a very long list of things.

(34:37):
You're just not gonna ask Chase Brown and Zach Moss
to be with Chase Brown over the course of the season,
as he gets more experienced, we may learn that, you
know what, these are some situations you can't put him in.
But I just feel like with Joe over the last
couple of years, we talked more about what he can't
do and what you can't ask him to do than
what he can do.

Speaker 2 (34:55):
And I don't I don't think that's good. In fact,
I know it's not.

Speaker 1 (34:59):
So the beginning of the season, that's at least kind
of nice to talk about those things. We'll take some
phone calls. Five point three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty.
Chad Brendel joins US previewing the Bearcat season four to
twenty and uh Mike Sando coming up at five twenty
on Quarterback Tiers on ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 12 (35:18):
This report is sponsored by Robert Half. Nine out of
ten hiring managers are having difficulty hiring. Robert Half is
here to help their recruiting professionals utilize their award winning.

Speaker 2 (35:28):
That's gonna be.

Speaker 1 (35:29):
Come as up much of a surprise to anybody Patriots.
If you look at and these are subjective metrics, and
teams and players and units outperformed them all the time.
The New England Patriots on defense might be okay. They
do get some players back who were hurt last year.

(35:51):
They have moved on from Matthew Judon. Offensively, they were
atrocious last year. Defensively, especially against the run, they were awesome,
best showing in franchise history yards per carry. Now throwing
the ball was a little bit of a different story.
But offensively the Patriots, if you look at Pro Football Focus,
wide receivers ranked dead last, running banks, running backs ranked

(36:13):
twenty fifth, offensive line ranked twenty eighth. Jacoby Brissett would
rank where among starting quarterbacks. He's going to be the
guy he of And I'm about to correct something that
I have said for years.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
Jacoby Brissett.

Speaker 1 (36:26):
He of his journeyman eighteen and thirty career record as
a starting quarterback, which includes some times playing for teams
better than the Patriots, so New England offensively is going
to be a mess this year. Drake may is probably
going to be the starter sooner rather than later, but
without much talent around him and an early season slate

(36:49):
look at the Patriots. Early in the year, they come
to Cincinnati nine and a half point dogs. They go
to Seattle, home for the I'm sorry, on the road
against the Jets, on the road against San Francisco, home
for Miami, home for Houston. Those are the first six games.
Gerd Mayo doing a smart thing, I guess by not

(37:09):
throwing the rookie quarterback.

Speaker 2 (37:12):
To the Wolves.

Speaker 1 (37:13):
One thing really quick I was, I do some betting
columns for Forbes. I was actually assigned the Bengals Patriots game.
I was only assigned the Bengals game once last year,
and they asked me to do a piece last week
about why it's so hard for modern contemporary NFL teams

(37:37):
to be considered among the absolute greatest of all time.
The NFL Top one hundred, which was released in twenty nineteen,
only had three twenty first century teams, and the highest
one ranked were the seven Patriots, who didn't even win
the title if you want to rate it. Maybe that
sounds interesting to you, Maybe it doesn't. It's at forbes

(37:59):
I've put on social media. So one of the things
I wanted to look up in the official NFL Factbook,
which they update every year, was I wanted to see
what what percentage of games in twenty twenty three were
decided by seven points or less?

Speaker 2 (38:18):
And the number is forty eight percent.

Speaker 1 (38:20):
Forty eight percent of NFL games are decided by less
than a touchdown or a touchdown or less.

Speaker 2 (38:24):
I should say.

Speaker 1 (38:27):
That number has consistently been around forty seven to fifty one,
fifty two percent now really since twenty eleven, all time
high just two years ago, fifty two percent. And I
wanted to compare that to back in the seventies, when
you know, we didn't have a salary cap, but we
also didn't have free agency, we didn't have updated passing rules.

(38:50):
The league was just a lot different, the sport was
a lot different. And back then, in let's say nineteen
seventy two nineteen seventy three, roughly a third of NFL
games were by seven points or less. So I'm doing
this research the NFL record in fact book factbook is
like four hundred pages. They actually have a page in
there that references a quarterbacks win loss record. Now, I

(39:17):
valuate quarterbacks win loss record not nearly as little as
I value a pitcher's win loss record, which I've never
valued in my life. We don't reference them on this show,
but it is at least an officially recognized stat by
Major League Baseball. Right, they assign an official pitcher win
and so I've argued for years quarterback wins and losses

(39:39):
are not real. Well, according to the NFL they are.
So I've been wrong about that. I don't know if
that is a recent thing. It's the first time I've
seen it referenced in this book. It's the first time
I've seen quarterback wins and losses referenced officially by the NFL.
It's still a garbage stat. I still don't care that

(40:00):
much about it. I care about it a little bit more,
I guess than pitcher win lost totals, which I don't
care at all about. But just sometimes we have to
point out stuff that I get wrong. I get a
lot of stuff wrong. I got that wrong anyway. Jacoby
Brissett's going to be the Patriots starting quarterback week one.
Is Jamar Chase going to be on the field week one?
I am going to operate under the assumption that the

(40:22):
answer is no. Could be dead wrong. Hope, I'm dead wrong.
I'm to this point. He's not at practice today. Who knows,
it's day to day. He may wake up tomorrow decide
he wants to practice. When Jamar suits up and he's
in uniform and he's on the field for the first game,
I'll believe that he's playing in it. I'm doing a

(40:44):
one to eighty from what I've said all summer long.
It really did feel like yet, it felt like yesterday
was just different, different in Jamar's demeanor, at least that
we had a chance to look at where the media
had a chance to watch practice. Different with the exasperation
that I think Zach Taylor kind of expressed yesterday, not
practicing today, the acknowledgment that he's healthy. It just this

(41:08):
now feels different. And because of where we are. It's
August twenty ninth, they start preparing hardcore for the New
England Patriots now in less than a week. So the
assumption that I'm going to operate under is he ain't
gonna play if he does awesome, like, who's gonna be
mad about that?

Speaker 2 (41:28):
But I'm going to operate.

Speaker 1 (41:29):
Under the assumption that he is not. All right, Let's see,
Chad Bryndall's going to join us in ten minutes. You
see Towson coming up on Saturday. We'll preview the season,
which we have now for weeks, but we'll preview the season. Nonetheless,
Chad joins us talk some Bearcat football. We've got another
season preview report with Tony Pike, and I've got to

(41:52):
do the I've gotta do the sports headlines at the
bottom of the hour, but I I'm not gonna I'm
gonna read them like a television sportscaster, or at least
what I what I would imagine a television sportscaster should
sound like, just in the event that a television sportscaster
is needed anywhere in town. But first, we have folks

(42:16):
waiting patiently that have called this show and want to
talk to me for some reason. So let's spend some
time on that. Les Charles, You're on ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (42:24):
How are you.

Speaker 13 (42:26):
I'm good man, Glad get me on the show.

Speaker 10 (42:29):
There.

Speaker 13 (42:29):
I've been following for a while lovelier about the content.

Speaker 2 (42:32):
Well, thank you very much, Charles, just.

Speaker 13 (42:35):
Quickly and definitely love the way you hold the staff accountable.
But basically I just wanted to hear your thoughts on
the differences you hope or expect to see between Dan
Pincher or whatever the new OC and what Brian Callahan
brought in terms of the offer.

Speaker 1 (42:52):
Well, I think the difference is the difference that I
would be looking for regardless of who the coordinator was,
And that to me is how do you take how
Joe loves to play, which is out of the shotgun,
and mesh it with how they played with Jake Browning
as quarterback last year where they found something in the
running game with Jake operating under center. How do you
blend those two things? And if you do so successfully,

(43:15):
can you tap into the play action game a little
bit more, which is you know something that's you're not
going to make a big part of your offense when
your quarterback's always in the shotgun. So how do you
blend how Joe has preferred to play for his entire
career with something that worked when he wasn't there last year?

Speaker 2 (43:31):
How do you blend those things?

Speaker 1 (43:33):
And you know, when you talk to the folks who
have been at training camp practice, there's been a lot
more of the quarterback under center. There's been a heavier
emphasis on not having the QB solely in the shotgun.

Speaker 2 (43:44):
Now.

Speaker 1 (43:45):
It's one thing to do that in July and August.
It's something else in September. But that's number one for me,
and I guess number two would be you know, and Jamar.
Jamar is a part of this. We've heard for a
while about how they want to move him around and
want to be almost positionless. They've got a lot of
tight ends and a lot of tight ends that I
think they want to play. They've also got some pieces

(44:07):
of wide receiver that I think they want to move around.
I'm just curious as to how the pieces get moved.
I'm curious as to how mike Yasicki has used relative
to the tight ends that they had last year and
the tight ends that they drafted this season. Is there
gonna be a little bit more positional versatility? Are you
gonna see Dan and Zach move guys around in ways

(44:28):
that in previous years they've talked about moving guys around,
But are we gonna see it in an actual practice
a little bit more this season. My answer to that
question is those two things right there.

Speaker 13 (44:39):
Excellent, excellent as always, Thank you very much for the time.

Speaker 2 (44:42):
Charles, thank you.

Speaker 1 (44:43):
I want to see an elimination of run plays when
it's second in ten. And what I really hope happens
more than anything is that when Brian Callahan cleaned out
his office that Zach Taylor told him, hey, look.

Speaker 2 (44:57):
Here's.

Speaker 1 (45:01):
Here's the here's the page in the playbook with the
shovel passes, go ahead and use them in Tennessee. That's
what I really No more shovel passes, No more runs
on second and ten. But in all seriousness, I we
discussed this a lot. They say what you want about
the Bengals play calling. They found a way to make

(45:21):
the offense function with Jake Browning. Now part of that
is Jake Browning is pretty quality backup in this league. Also,
the Bengals still had some pretty good talent on the field,
but they put Jake under center. They found success running
the football. How do you mesh those two things? What
does that look like? We saw a little a little

(45:41):
bit of it during the preseason. By the way, Jake
Browning practicing today, which is good news. That's that's that's
just from an interesting standpoint how they do that and
how long that goes and if they're not finding success
before they go screw it. Joe likes to be in
the show. Joe's going to be in the Shotgun. It's

(46:02):
a quarterback for four Charles. Thank you for the phone call.
Five one three seven four nine fifteen thirty is our
phone number. You see towsand State on Saturday. Chad Brendel
is going to join us next on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports.

Speaker 6 (46:16):
Station Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic.

Speaker 7 (46:23):
From the UC Health Traffic Center at the UC Gardner
Neuroscience Institute. You can access the leading brain spine as.

Speaker 4 (46:30):
Well.

Speaker 1 (46:31):
You know what I'll do, I'll I mean, he tweeted
about three hours ago.

Speaker 2 (46:35):
That was his most recent tweet.

Speaker 1 (46:38):
Aircat Journal is running its biggest sale of the year
to celebrate Join now. We'll get seventy five percent off
of full year, the best Bearcats coverage in the market.
That's me reading the tweet from Chad join them aircat
journal dot com.

Speaker 2 (46:50):
Was that your fifth attempt, Terran? Yes, he just texted
me like literally ten minutes ago. Did he say I'm
not coming on. No, he does want to the firm
that we or one.

Speaker 1 (47:01):
All right, Chad, if you are listening your your our
phone calls are going right to voicemail.

Speaker 10 (47:07):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (47:07):
And you know this isn't a podcast. This is a
live show. You know that this I love podcast. But
like if it was a podcast, you know, they they
can hit pause in the record button, go and get
a cup of coffee and sit around again. Now we go, okay,
start recording, and we don't. This isn't one of those things.

Speaker 2 (47:25):
This is live.

Speaker 1 (47:27):
So in the absence of Chad, we'll talk. If anybody
knows where Chad Brendle is, tell him he's Uh, he's
late for his radio hit on ESPN fifteen thirty, thank you.
Maybe maybe he's working on a big scoop. So instead

(47:48):
we'll talk to Jeff. Jeff, do you want to fill
in for Chad?

Speaker 14 (47:53):
Yeah, and you can put me back on hold the
second he calls in. Okay, course, happy happy Makers Thursday?

Speaker 2 (48:00):
Of course, Yes, I love it.

Speaker 14 (48:01):
Yes, yes, yeah, I have some good news on the Bengals.
Talking with my buddy on sports talk radio up here,
kJ Henry could end up being.

Speaker 2 (48:12):
A bit of a steel, it sounds like, Yeah, it's interesting.

Speaker 1 (48:15):
I had a conversation with somebody and maybe it was
the same person and in the similar business, and I
just texted I go kJ Henry with like three question marks,
and he called me and he's like, I think, I'm
not sure I understand why they let him go, and
I think the Bengals got something there.

Speaker 2 (48:30):
So I'm excited.

Speaker 14 (48:32):
Yeah, my buddies, when I oh, he's gonna have two
or three sacks in that Monday night game, that there
no problem with forever, And just following the beat Riders
on Twitter, everybody's kind of in the same boat. Was like,
is dan Quinn trying to send a message to the
rest of the team.

Speaker 9 (48:48):
Did he do something wrong?

Speaker 14 (48:49):
Nobody can figure it out, So we'll take it, you know. Yeah,
you know, I think we need a tackler or noseguard
more than we need another end.

Speaker 9 (48:59):
But I think we'll take that right.

Speaker 2 (49:01):
No, definitely.

Speaker 1 (49:02):
Uh, they have defensive tackles all over the place. I'm
not sure how many of them are good, but they
did only have four healthy edge guys, and let's face it,
one is a rookie. The other end, Joseph Osaiah is unproven,
and so kJ Henry struck me as the ultimate by low.

Speaker 2 (49:20):
Sort of guy, get a lot out of them.

Speaker 14 (49:22):
Yeah, seems seems great to me. And my only comment,
I'm beyond as exhausted as you are on Jamar. I
would just love to see the text messages with what
his agent is advising him to do. I don't know
if there's such thing as representation malpractice at the pro
sports agent level, but it seems weird to me that

(49:43):
a guy who thinks he's going to get thirty three
million dollars would be willing to pass on eighty thousand
dollars a week game checks. Do you think I'm thinking
wrong on that?

Speaker 1 (49:53):
No, I think you're one hundred percent accurate. I think
that would be the most interesting. The most interesting thing
about this that we don't know is is what is
Jamar's representation saying about how this is gonna go down?

Speaker 2 (50:06):
And what changed?

Speaker 1 (50:07):
Like like like that's the thing, Like what what changed,
if anything, from Sunday and Monday to yesterday? And maybe
that was the plan all along, Hey he's gonna come
back and practice, and then hey, you think I'm coming back?
Maybe I don't know, but did something change from when
Jamar is like, all right, here we go, We're within
two weeks, I'm gonna practice, to then him deciding not

(50:30):
only am I not going to practice, but I'm not
gonna say anything. I'm gonna parade in front of the
media and not say anything to anybody. It's just I
would be really interested in hearing whether whether or not
anything really changed in that timeframe.

Speaker 4 (50:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (50:43):
I'm certain his agent has a thorough understanding the CBA
and the ramifications and all that. So, uh, Like I said,
I'm with you whatever happens at this point in time.
I feel like we need him, but I don't really
care at this point in time. And you know, Austin
has always said that Cincinnati is a town that turns
on stars and a heartbeat, whether it's making money or

(51:05):
just being obstinate about stuff. Then I think yesterday may
have started to turn the rudder a little bit.

Speaker 1 (51:11):
Yeah, I think I think there's some validity to that. Jeff,
thank you. I think there's some validity to that.

Speaker 8 (51:15):
I do.

Speaker 1 (51:16):
By the way, I kind of agree with Austin. I
kind of felt like I kind of feel like, in
terms of the court of public opinion, things pivoted a
little bit yesterday. They certainly did with me. I'll tell
you what I was thinking if I were Mike Brown
coming up in ten minutes. First, our APB has been answered.
Chat are you okay? Everything all right?

Speaker 4 (51:35):
Yeah, I'll buy my phone would not connect. I don't know.
It was weird.

Speaker 1 (51:41):
Well, hopefully you are here. You are here speaking of
the inability to connect. Hopefully we don't see that from
Brendan Soresby and his wide receivers and tight ends when
the Bearcats play Townsend on Saturday, Like, how I did that?

Speaker 4 (51:54):
I see what you did there. That's very impressive radio radioing.
And I hope to live up your lofty standard tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (52:01):
Yeah, you're in for me tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (52:03):
I think the Bearcats are going to be okay in
Big twelve play and by okay, I think better than
people think.

Speaker 2 (52:09):
Am I out of my mind?

Speaker 4 (52:12):
I don't think you're out of your mind. I think
the possibility is certainly there. I think I still am
in a in a place where I want to see
it first. Maybe the scars from last year are still
very visible, and you know, I'd like to see a
little bit more proof. But watching this team, and you know,

(52:36):
I was at every practice, but one that was open
to the media. You know, since things started back in
the beginning of the end of July, beginning of August,
they look more competent, that they look faster, They look
more you know, athletic, they have more size, you know,
some of the things that we're very concerning in year

(52:58):
one in the Big twelve. Feels like they answered some
of those questions that should lead to better results and
hopefully a situation where at the end of the year
this team is not you know, completely beat up and crawling.
They weren't limping to the finish line last year. Now
they were crawling to the finish line. David and I

(53:18):
talked about this on the BCJ pod last night. I
guy West Virginia game was about as bad as I
remember in terms of watching a team that just physically,
pardon my friends, got their asking, and hopefully they have
put enough measures in place that they do not end
up in any of those situations in twenty twenty four.

Speaker 1 (53:40):
I also the league itself. There are gonna be games
where they're underdogs. They're gonna be games they lose. The
league itself just doesn't scare me. Like I go week
by week and I just I know I did a
similar exercise last year. But if the team is better
and the league is worse, what that tells me there are.

Speaker 2 (54:00):
Some games that can be won.

Speaker 1 (54:01):
I just don't see that many games where I'm like,
oh my god, they can't win that one. And I
I didn't feel quite the same last year, and I
shouldn't have. I just I don't think that much of
twenty twenty four Big twelve football, specifically as it relates
to the Cincinnati schedule.

Speaker 4 (54:18):
Well, fortunately, that's what happens when your team doesn't play
four of the top five teams in the conference like
preseason poll. Right, So looking at it, it doesn't feel
I mean, we were we did the exercise last night,
or we went through every game on the schedule, and
you know a lot of the times you're looking and
it's like, well, this team has Kansas, Kansas State and

(54:41):
Arizona and the three games leading up to Cincinnati, and
you know, this team has Utah and you know whatever,
and like Cincinnati doesn't really have that. Like I'm with
you in the fact that I don't look other than
you know, in aims in the little app full back
to back weeks in November there's no chance in hell

(55:03):
or winning either of.

Speaker 9 (55:04):
Those games, right.

Speaker 4 (55:06):
But other than that, I don't look at it and think,
man like they're just gonna have to get out live
in this stretch or that stretch, there's winnable games sprinkled
a little bit of everywhere. You know, I'm a little
less sure about winning at Texas Tech than maybe you are.

(55:26):
But you certainly should beat Houston and Arizona State at home.
You certainly do have a chance to go to Colorado
and win. There are just more things on this schedule
that seem manageable than what they went through last year.

Speaker 1 (55:45):
Are you suggesting? Are you suggesting that they could beat
the team coached by his excellency Dion Sanders, and that
maybe maybe that the Buffaloes won't go undefeated.

Speaker 4 (55:57):
Go look at their schedule leading up to Cincinnati, like
they're either going to be on top of the world
or oh boy, oh boy, Like you know, I don't,
I don't mind. Like if you look at what that
the reporter had said consistently, like he was trying to

(56:18):
start a fight. You're trying to start and I'm I
know a little bit about trying to start fights with
words when you're trying to start a fight, don't be
surprised when somebody says, okay, let's fight, like you know that.
That's kind of my my take on that. But it's
a little soft. I mean, you know, it doesn't make

(56:41):
a whole lot of Like you're Dion Sanders, you know,
there's other ways that it could have been done than
the way that it was handled. However, like I said,
if you're a sportswriter and you you want to take
your keyboard, it's not a pen anymore. Nobody uses pens anymore. Now,
if you want to take your keyboard and get into
a fight, don't be surprised when somebody punches you like that.

(57:04):
You know that's that's the.

Speaker 5 (57:06):
Way that goes.

Speaker 4 (57:06):
But I mean, their schedule through the first half of
the season is really tough, really tough, including tonight, Like
tonight is not it's going to not be as good
as North Dakota State has been. But they're they're not
bad at all. And the biggest thing Dave hit the
nail on the head with it last night. They they're
six and one against that BS opponents in their last

(57:28):
seven games. They ain't scared, so that one's going to
be interesting. Cincinnati can win that game, and especially if
Colorado is struggling at that point in time, where is
the narrative going to be and how does that benefit
the bear Cuts.

Speaker 1 (57:48):
I'm with you there, all right, I'm glad. I'm glad
you answered the call. I know you have to who
what can we look forward to tomorrow?

Speaker 4 (57:55):
Well, I was, I was thinking about having a bunch
of experts on and then I remembered I'm an expert.
So I'm just gonna I'm gonna have me in studio,
all right. So I'm gonna I'm gonna spend a second
talking about the bear segment, talking about the Bearcats offense,
what people can expect. I'm gonna spend a segment talking
about the Bearcats events and what people can expect. I'm

(58:17):
gonna spend a segment maybe talking about Scott Cudderfield. Yeah,
and where this thing is at. A lot of people
are very antsy to shove Scott's Sadernfield out of town.
If they win seven games. I ended up at seven
and five last night. I thought I was gonna go
to six and six. I ended up at seven and five.
But they go seven and five. How much does the

(58:38):
narrative change.

Speaker 2 (58:39):
I think I think everybody was gonna be interesting.

Speaker 1 (58:41):
Yeah, I was so like I asked this because I
think a lot of folks go, you know what, they
gotta go six and six, and I I'm sort of
six and six, seven and five. I'm a little bit
more sure that they're gonna be pit than I was,
and so I'm leaving seven and five. So but a
lot of folks, a lot of folks have said, well,

(59:01):
if they get to six and six that is a
successful season, then fine, you know, that's double their win
total from last year, Bowl eligible, all that awesome. I
guess what I would want to know is, if they
go six and six, is someone who is skeptical about
Scott Saderfield going to be won over? And I don't
think the answer is yes, I.

Speaker 4 (59:21):
Agree somebody that's skeptical. Look, you know how it works
these days. We you develop a take, you say your take,
and then you cannot You're not allowed to ever back
off of that take, and you have to take it
to the grave.

Speaker 2 (59:34):
Right. But like, and it's not apples and apples by
any stretch.

Speaker 1 (59:39):
Luke Fickle goes four and eight and came this close
to going one and eleven.

Speaker 2 (59:44):
By year two he had won over skeptics.

Speaker 1 (59:46):
I mean, I'm sure your message board after year one
was filled with, if not people who wanted to fire him,
at least folks were like man ow Shure. And then
by year two he had won everybody over. There wasn't
there wasn't a soul who was like, God, you know what,
I'm not sure.

Speaker 2 (59:59):
I don't think a c.

Speaker 1 (01:00:01):
Is I don't think they're capable of having the sort
of season that's gonna make people do that.

Speaker 2 (01:00:05):
And so if I'm right that.

Speaker 4 (01:00:07):
Luke won ten games right year, Scott Saderfield wins ten
games this year, somebody's gonna, you know, be overjoy.

Speaker 2 (01:00:14):
So that's my thing. Are they are they within reach?
Is it?

Speaker 1 (01:00:19):
Is it attainable to have the sort of season where
you go, you know what, not only did they win
enough games, but now I feel really good? You know what,
Cunningham got it right with this coach. Scott Sadderfield's the guy.
I don't know that that's I don't know that that's
gonna happen. I think you're I think you're gonna have
a lot of people who are like, yeah, they made progress. Cool,
I'm still not sure he's the guy that may be fair,
may it may not be fair. But I don't know

(01:00:41):
that they're really capable of having this sort of season
that's gonna take these Saderfield skeptic and win them, win
him over.

Speaker 4 (01:00:47):
No, I don't know that two seasons of success. Again,
you make your take, you state your take on the internet,
now you put it on Twitter, and then you can
never waiver from what your initial did. This guy's staying,
so then he stinks forever. It doesn't matter what happens.
So there's gonna be.

Speaker 9 (01:01:04):
A lot of that.

Speaker 4 (01:01:06):
The problem is mo like, there's a lot of pressure
early m pit Miami. There's a lot of pressure early, Yeah,
because there's no chance he's gonna be fired none. But
if they lose to Miami again, the die is cast

(01:01:26):
at that point in time, regardless of what he does.
So you know that part's going to be interesting. But
then if you can get some wins, and you can
you can build some momentum, then maybe you can get
You know that that back, the last four games of
the season are are so you're gonna have to You're
gonna have to do your damage in the first eight

(01:01:48):
and then hope you've got, you know, things rolling towards
the back half. But uh, I don't think too many
people are going to change their mind regardless of what happens,
barring the young for se, which coach and I don't
see it.

Speaker 1 (01:02:02):
Right, which coach faces more pressure to win against a
traditional rival, Scott Saderfield against Miami or West Miller.

Speaker 9 (01:02:10):
Again Xavier, Oh, that's a good one though.

Speaker 4 (01:02:15):
That's why you do this full time and I only
do it part time.

Speaker 1 (01:02:17):
Well, when you do that, when you do that podcast,
I'll come on as a guest.

Speaker 9 (01:02:24):
Hopefully we don't.

Speaker 4 (01:02:25):
Hope Scott Scott Saderfield beats Miami and we don't have
to really worry about it.

Speaker 2 (01:02:29):
But I mean, like.

Speaker 1 (01:02:31):
As you look ahead to basketball, and I'm a little
bit short on time here.

Speaker 2 (01:02:34):
But but like that's that's a thing, like you know, that's.

Speaker 4 (01:02:37):
A sure we all think Wes has builtmore goodwill. Sure,
I think, yeah, yeah, than Scott Saderfield has at this point, right,
what would this be six in a row?

Speaker 10 (01:02:48):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (01:02:48):
Yeah? And and four for Wes.

Speaker 1 (01:02:51):
I mean I think he'd be the first to admit,
like I kind of I got him at home this year.

Speaker 2 (01:02:55):
I have what I is easily my best team.

Speaker 1 (01:02:57):
Like I'm I don't want Xavier fans to take this
the wrong way, Like you're you're supposed to win that.

Speaker 4 (01:03:02):
Game you're at home. Yeah, you've lost three in row, right, Yeah, yeah,
So the conversation would definitely not be as happy as
it is right now if they don't win the shootout.

Speaker 2 (01:03:15):
Yep, we're on the same page. I Uh, ever, you've
seen Rocky three?

Speaker 4 (01:03:22):
Yes, many moons ago, but yes, Rocky three.

Speaker 2 (01:03:25):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:03:26):
Apollo trains Rocky and he says to him, because Rocky's
gonna fight Clever Lang at the end of this, I'm
gonna ask a favor, and he keeps referencing it and
and Rocky is like, what favor?

Speaker 2 (01:03:40):
And he doesn't tell him.

Speaker 1 (01:03:41):
I have an off air favor to ask you, but
I'm not going to tell you what it is until.

Speaker 4 (01:03:46):
Saturday, not even off air.

Speaker 1 (01:03:48):
No, I'm gonna tell you when I see you Saturday. Okay,
I have a favorite.

Speaker 9 (01:03:53):
Ask that's I guess.

Speaker 2 (01:03:54):
So now now you.

Speaker 1 (01:03:55):
Have two days to wonder. What's that could be a
show topic tomorrow? What's the favorite that mo wants?

Speaker 4 (01:04:00):
What is the favorite that what is the favorite? Yeah,
I've got I've got three cases of an alcohol. It's
not even out yet, mo.

Speaker 12 (01:04:09):
It is.

Speaker 1 (01:04:10):
Yeah, I do, but that's not the favor. Okay, all right,
I'll see you Saturday. I go chat no bearcatcher dot com.
We are way late. I was gonna do the sports
headlines like a sports anchor, but I don't have time.
Now I have like zip through maybe five thirty three,
Tony Pike will join us, and we have Brennemant and

(01:04:31):
Jones on baseball on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports.

Speaker 6 (01:04:34):
Station, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 7 (01:04:39):
Traffic from the UC Health Traffic Center at the UC
Gardner Neuroscience Institute, you can access the Leading Brain.

Speaker 1 (01:04:48):
Another hour, another season preview report. Tony Pike is here.
It's my last day of the season preview reports.

Speaker 15 (01:04:55):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:04:55):
You know what we can.

Speaker 1 (01:04:56):
Do is is we could compile all of these together
and like him in a subscriber area on the iHeartRadio
app and sell them.

Speaker 11 (01:05:03):
It feels like if we don't, we're we're missing. Yeah,
this is the stuff that folks eat up. And the transition,
you know, in my years of doing this, it's been
probably the most seamless transition that we've gone from training
camp reports to season preview up to date. Thank you
for that? Well, no, it's all you.

Speaker 1 (01:05:22):
I mean, you really are the star. You are the
star of the season preview report. Let's do one now,
okay A Jamar Chase, oh good.

Speaker 2 (01:05:31):
Again?

Speaker 1 (01:05:31):
Not practicing today? If you were, I was gonna say,
if you're a betting man, if you had to wager
an amount of money, that matters to you on Jamar
Chase playing week one where you put in your dough
not playing?

Speaker 2 (01:05:42):
Really?

Speaker 5 (01:05:43):
You know?

Speaker 11 (01:05:44):
Everything that I heard and everyone I talked to last
week when asked when would you be concerned was now?

Speaker 2 (01:05:50):
It was yesterday.

Speaker 11 (01:05:51):
Everyone said, well, if he's not out there next Wednesday,
or he's not out there Thursday, then I would be concerned.
Here we are, and it feels like things are trending
to the wrong direction. It felt yesterday felt like a
different demeanor from the videos you saw of Jamar Chase,
not as active talking to teammates or laughing and spending.
It's more by himself, more reserved. Today, for the second

(01:06:14):
straight day, he paraded himself out there fifteen minutes late,
and as Jay Morrison pointed out, and some don't make
and put a lot into this. I look at it
because he hasn't done it much. He made sure to
walk right past all the members of the media, he
saw right where they were standing and just slowly paraded
by while coming out fifteen minutes late. It feels to
me like it's trending more in the wrong direction. Now

(01:06:36):
we can be wrong, because I was shocked Sunday when
he was back, because it came out of nowhere and
seemingly nothing had gotten done. It is seemingly a day
to day situation. But everything I was told by those
covering the team was if it got to this week
and he's not out there, then we should probably be concerned.

Speaker 2 (01:06:52):
And here we are.

Speaker 1 (01:06:53):
So you and I are not going to be together tomorrow.
I'm off, Monday's a holiday. Tuesday, they're off. The team
is back on the practice field Wednesday. I think what
our shows sound like on Wednesday is.

Speaker 2 (01:07:04):
Going to be really interesting.

Speaker 1 (01:07:05):
Yeah, now it might be Jamar's out there practicing and
let's go, here come the Patriots, or if he's not
out there, suddenly we're talking about the very distinct possibility
that he's not playing week one, and as soon as
we as soon as we really entertain the possibility of
him not playing week one, Then it becomes what about
week two? And let's be honest, they could beat the

(01:07:26):
Patriots with almost anybody playing quarterback or playing wide receiver.
Can they beat the Chiefs on the road without Jamar?

Speaker 2 (01:07:32):
Chase?

Speaker 11 (01:07:32):
Well, add on to that the question you and I
have talked about it right tackle? Yeah, what if it's
now can you rely on Trent Brown as MEM's back
and now your questions at right tackle and your star
receivers out, Then it becomes even more of a talking point.
So you know, again to me, you start talking about
build up time, how much time do you need? There's
this I don't know if it's a misunderstanding on my

(01:07:54):
part because I heard Zach Taylor speak earlier and say, well,
you know, Jamar is an understanding of the offense. He's
where he needs to be. We've had this offense in
place for years. But I also heard in the off
season that the offense is going to look very different
under Dan Pitcher and they're going to try new stuff
and Jamar is going to be kind of all over
the field. Well, which one is it? Because if it's
the latter, then you are missing reps and hurting this

(01:08:16):
offense by Jamar Chase not being out there. If it's
not and it's the same offense we've seen for years, okay,
just plug him back into what he knows. But I
was under the impression that this is going to look
and feel different under Dan Pitcher and Zach Taylor. And
if that's the case, you can't help but wonder and
start to look into how much they're missing.

Speaker 1 (01:08:34):
Now well, and you know, yes, Joe and Jamar have
great established chemistry, but this was supposed to be the
normal training camp, correct, the normal off season. The normal
training camp has Joe practicing with Jamar Chase more than
just a couple of times.

Speaker 11 (01:08:51):
Yeah, two two times, and again tell me all you
want about how he's been in meetings, and it's different.
Got to We've talked about this during our training camp reports.
But from a quarterback wide receiver standpoint, what I needed
when I was installing during camp. I needed the receivers
out there because that's when we got to communicate of

(01:09:13):
you know what, maybe cut the split down by a yard,
you know what, try and outside release. Hey, you took
that to ten. That just felt a long, little long
for me. Take it to eight next rep. Those are
the little intricracies that every rep you get during practice
you get to iron out. You can't do that when
you just watch a tape. Everything on the board looks great.
Let's match this with a three step Is it three?

Speaker 4 (01:09:33):
No?

Speaker 5 (01:09:33):
Hitch?

Speaker 2 (01:09:33):
Is it three?

Speaker 9 (01:09:34):
Hitch?

Speaker 2 (01:09:34):
Do you take a five? Are you plus split minus split?

Speaker 4 (01:09:38):
Where?

Speaker 11 (01:09:38):
I mean, there's so many different things. It's not just
line up out there and go, So that to me
is more interesting. And you're right, maybe you could use
New England as a preseason game number four because they're
not a really good football team. But you know we
see bad teams win football games all the time. Sure,
so you don't want to risk that you need the

(01:09:58):
most out of Jamar Chase. We're sitting here next week
and you and I are having the same conversation in
studio during the quick kits or something like that. It
is going to be a major problem for this team.

Speaker 2 (01:10:09):
And they won't be seasoned.

Speaker 1 (01:10:10):
Preview now because that ends tomorrow. Yeah, sorry, this is it. Sorry,
I'm going back to shed a tear. Tony Pike season
preview report. Brendanman and Jones on Baseball Next Way back
in nineteen thirty nine, Emory Federal Credit Union opened its doors,
and eighty five years later, they're celebrating all their history
and accomplishments. To celebrate, Emery is offering special discounts and

(01:10:32):
public events.

Speaker 2 (01:10:33):
How you doing. My name is Moeger.

Speaker 1 (01:10:35):
You're listening to ESPN fifteen thirty and thanks. It is
the Mikeeloi Ultra five o'clock Happy thanks to our friends
at Michelobultra.

Speaker 2 (01:10:49):
I am still prepared.

Speaker 1 (01:10:53):
I have left Terren's birthday president home for a fourth
consecutive day, and I have forgotten to provide us with Michelobultra,
which I like to do on the last day of
the week.

Speaker 2 (01:11:01):
I am not here tomorrow, so I was gonna do
Friday for you.

Speaker 9 (01:11:05):
Frountil January, no.

Speaker 1 (01:11:06):
Fridays for me. If things go right, Tarran, if the
Bengals play in the super Bowl. This is our last
Friday show until Valentine's Day. And I know you love
Valentine's Day, So yeah, we're done with Fridays. The Reds
are about to play a game of the five to
ten game because they got that Thomas Rhet concert.

Speaker 2 (01:11:26):
Oh yeah, I forgot.

Speaker 1 (01:11:27):
We're supposed to give away a bunch of Jason Isbel tickets. Sorry,
we'll probably just give them away at rant Taron find
out between now and six o'clock how many pair we're
supposed to give away, and we'll just do it in
the leamest way possible.

Speaker 2 (01:11:42):
A few things.

Speaker 1 (01:11:43):
Number one, Jamar Chase not practicing today. Zach Taylor talking
again today answering more questions about Jamar Chase. Here is
the head coach of the Bengals. Without the benefit of
us being able to hear the questions I get a
are either about Jamar Chase. Here's Zach Taylor answering questions

(01:12:04):
about the absence of his Star wide receiver yet again.

Speaker 3 (01:12:08):
We'll see there'll probably be this very similar to yesterday.
But I'm not gonna make any predictions. He's been at
every meeting, so you know, he knows everything. He's been
in the system now for three years that he's played
it in the fourth year now and and so again
he knows everything. He's he's very on top of it.

Speaker 1 (01:12:31):
There you go, My guy, Tarrn tells me that's Zach Taylor.
Just here's the part of my day where I got
to answer questions about Jamar Chase, Tarran tells me, we
have audio of Mike Hilton and other Bengals players. Do
we know who they are? Mike Hilton's won and other
unidentified Bengals players. Give me, give me some Mike Hilton. Well,

(01:12:54):
we'll play the audio where we have the identity of
the player. I don't have this in front of me.
Give me Mike Mike Elton sticking up for Jamar Chase. Alright,
go ahead and give me that.

Speaker 4 (01:13:05):
Man.

Speaker 2 (01:13:05):
Leave the man alone. He's a grown man.

Speaker 16 (01:13:07):
He's handling his business own way. You know what I mean,
y y'all, wouldn't want anybody to kind of button in
all y'all.

Speaker 2 (01:13:11):
Type of business.

Speaker 16 (01:13:12):
So, like I said, it's not a shot at y'all,
but it's a let him handle his own.

Speaker 2 (01:13:17):
On this farm or out there.

Speaker 1 (01:13:18):
Like you know that his general interest essentially business, thanks.

Speaker 9 (01:13:24):
For sure.

Speaker 16 (01:13:25):
Like I said, whether he's here we want or not,
you know, business gonna gonna get taken care of. Obviously
we want everybody wants them to get what he deserves.
But you know the nature of the business, you never
know what can happen, what drop shots.

Speaker 2 (01:13:37):
Your confidence really was.

Speaker 3 (01:13:40):
Speaking very high right about the defense from.

Speaker 13 (01:13:42):
The secondary expect except for the wine.

Speaker 4 (01:13:45):
Do you think.

Speaker 16 (01:13:48):
Number one is bringing back guys like vom Bell, bringing
in Geno Stone and another year of calm DJ Dax,
Like everybody has grown together, and you know throughout camp,
you know our communication has been top notch and we've
been making the plays on the football and that's how
you win games.

Speaker 1 (01:14:02):
All right, There's Mike Kilton. Mike Kilt is a very
good player, very reliable player. I don't know that anybody
is bothering Jamar Chase. Jamar Chase's absence from campus a story,
and the people who cover the team are covering a story.
So ten after five, no real movement Jamar Chase. I
you don't have to do this. Might not want to
do this. You might get mad at me for doing this.

(01:14:24):
I could be wrong when I do this. I am
going to operate under the assumption that Jamar Chase is
going to miss the first game. Maybe I'm being a
little bit premature. I hope I'm wrong. Bengals are better
with Jamar Chase on the field. But as Tony put

(01:14:45):
it today, this isn't trending in the right direction. This
seemed to take a really weird turn, and I think
not a very encouraging turn if you are like me,
and if you have viewed this solely through the lens
of is the dude gonna play the first game of
the season. And let's be honest, if he doesn't play

(01:15:05):
the first game of the season, then well, is he
gonna play the second game, which is a game that
the Bengals are going to be underdogs in as opposed
to the Patriots game. By the way, if he didn't
see Jacoby Brissett's going to play that game for New England,
the Bengals is gonna be heavy favorites nine and a
half points right now in that game. So I'm just
gonna go ahead and operate under the assumption he's not
gonna play. That's not me being mean or mad or angry.

(01:15:27):
I'm exasperated. But what I care about most is is.

Speaker 2 (01:15:33):
He gonna play?

Speaker 1 (01:15:34):
And with his pivot back to not participating in practice,
when I see him back out there, that's certainly no
guarantee that he's not then gonna change his mind and
decide to not practice. I just let's just go ahead
and assume that he's not gonna play. We can do
that with the understanding the Bengals have a trump card.

(01:15:56):
If you believe that Joe Burrow is a Tier one quarterback,
Mike Sando is gonna join us in ten minutes. The
Athletic dot Com who does this exercise every year where
he separates the quarterbacks into tiers based on talking with
over fifty NFL coaches, gms and personnel people. Joe Burrow
is in Tier one with Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen.

(01:16:16):
You could certainly argue that Patrick Mahomes belongs in his
own tier, and I wouldn't argue against that, But Joe
Burrow is a Tier one guy. If you nod along
with that and go, hell, yeah he is, then you
know what that's that's the trump card, that's the that's
the fail safe, that's all reliable. I go back in

(01:16:36):
twenty fourteen, Andy Dalton gets his contract extension. Some of
us didn't entirely understand why. Some of us thought it
was awesome. My take was, is Andy Dalton a franchise quarterback?
What's the definition of a franchise quarterback? It's a trump card,
it's a constant. NFL teams can at times be just these,
you know, just huge chaotic organizations organisms almost or there's

(01:17:00):
NonStop change, NonStop chaos at times, NonStop bad news. Players come,
players go, players get hurt, players get angry, They hold out,
Coaches leave, coordinators leave, franchises sometimes relocate. But what makes
you feel like, you know what they can still succeed
is the franchise quarterback. And if you don't feel that

(01:17:21):
way about your quarterback, you got to go get a
new one. And if you don't feel that way about
your quarterback, you shouldn't pay him. What franchise quarterbacks get,
We're all excited a year ago Joe Burrow got his deal.

Speaker 2 (01:17:33):
That's awesome, franchise QB.

Speaker 1 (01:17:35):
Why because yes, it's awesome when he's throwing to Jamar
There is maybe no quarterback wide receiver combination that has
better chemistry. But you're excited for it because you're like,
you know what, when things are going not so great,
when there's holes on the roster, when there's injuries, when
the defense stinks, when the wide receivers aren't very fast,

(01:17:58):
when the play calling sucks, here's there's my trump card.
It's it's my franchise quarterback. It's Joe Burrow. So I'm sorry, man,
I'm gonna operate under the assumption Jamar is not gonna
play the first game, and then I'll wonder, okay, is
that gonna mean the second game?

Speaker 2 (01:18:15):
But I got Joe Burrow? And if you go, yeah,
you got Joe Burrow.

Speaker 1 (01:18:18):
But if if your first response to that is yeah,
but then uh, then you don't think Joe Burrow is
a Tier one guy. Those tier one guys, those absolute
best of the best, upper crust elite qbs are due
to you. Go you know what, no matter what, no
matter who they don't have, We're gonna be okay with
Joe Burrow. Maybe I think too highly of them, I'm

(01:18:41):
gonna assume they're gonna be okay. Do I think they
can win a title if Jamar decides to sit the
entire season.

Speaker 12 (01:18:47):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:18:49):
As much as I'll operate under the assumption that he's
not going to play the first game, I'm not to
the point that I am gonna assume that he's gonna
miss the entire season.

Speaker 2 (01:18:59):
I wonder.

Speaker 1 (01:18:59):
I am asked you yesterday to put yourself in Zach
Taylor's shoes. So Mike Brown and the Bengals have a
way of doing things, and you may disagree, and you
may agree, but it's a way of doing things, and
it's we'll pay our best players who play the positions
that matter most. But we're not going to pay him

(01:19:19):
until they have only one year left on their deal.
The exception being Joe Burrow, because as this franchise goes,
Joe Burrow is the exception to everything. But that's their
way of doing things. It's been their way of doing
things for a long time. We'll give the second contract,
in some cases we'll give the third contract, but we're
going to do it when there's only a year left.

Speaker 2 (01:19:39):
Again, you may not like that.

Speaker 1 (01:19:41):
Part of me that doesn't like it, but you may
not like that. But I wonder, like, if you're Mike Brown,
so you've gone through this T Higgins thing, you've chosen
not to pay Tea. And when I say Mike Brown,
you could apply this to Katie Blackburn and Troy Blackburn
and Elizabeth Blackburn and Duke Tobin if you want. So,
we did this thing with T Higgins and it had
to suck for T Higgins.

Speaker 2 (01:20:02):
It had to hurt on a human level.

Speaker 5 (01:20:04):
Man.

Speaker 1 (01:20:04):
It has to hurt when the team that you work
for is like, yeah, we don't really view you the
same way we do this other guy that we might
make the highest paid wide receiver in the sport.

Speaker 2 (01:20:14):
We like you, we don't love you quite as much.
That's got to hurt.

Speaker 1 (01:20:19):
And yet t Higgins has gamely put himself on the
field as he did last year in that game against
Kansas City Week seventeen, despite being hurt, apparently without the
knowledge of his coaches. And yeah, he requested a trade,
I think knowing that that's just kind of what you

(01:20:40):
do and he wasn't going to get traded, but he
also signed his franchise tender early and has participated in
training camp, played in a preseason game. Now, had he
not done those things, I wouldn't have been too upset
with him. But he did do those things. And so

(01:21:03):
if you're Mike Brown, aren't you kind of going, well, huh,
here's the guy that I'm not paying, and yet he's
done all the right things. Over here is the guy
that I have said publicly I'm going to pay, And
dude can't come to practice with less than two weeks

(01:21:24):
to go before the start of the season. Maybe I
should think about whether or not I should have paid
the other guy. If you're Mike Brown, that's not what
you're thinking, at least a little bit. Mike Sando on
his QB tiers.

Speaker 6 (01:21:42):
Next Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic.

Speaker 7 (01:21:48):
From the UC Health Traffic Center at the UC Gardner
Neuroscience Institute, you can access.

Speaker 1 (01:21:53):
The lead coaches, GMS, and personnel people and separates quarterbacks
into tears tiers based on their input. He's got Joe
Burrow as a Tier one quarterback, although not as many
people were as high on him is they were about
a year ago, and you could, I guess understand why
you could read this piece in the Athletic Mike Sando

(01:22:14):
this week when he releases the tiers, becomes like the
go to guy on sports talk radio and on podcasts.
So I'm appreciative of you carving out some time for us.

Speaker 2 (01:22:23):
So he's a.

Speaker 1 (01:22:25):
Tier one guy. You got a lot of pushback from
fans who were like, yeah, look he's good, but he's
always hurt, so he can't be a Tier one guy.
Some of the people you talk to reference his injury history.
How much should he be dinged as you compile these tiers,
But because of the injuries.

Speaker 9 (01:22:43):
I'm fine with her. He sat first.

Speaker 17 (01:22:44):
Thanks for having me on It's fun to do, and
you know, I feel like I was taken aback that
people were objecting to that. But that's the fun part
of doing this is I'm involved in the process the
whole way through, so I'm not surprised by the end
that it publishers. I'm always wondering what the fans or
other media are going to say. And I would say,
if Burrow were to not play well this year or

(01:23:08):
have another year that was really dominated by injuries, I
think you'd have to take that into account. I think
I would expect him to slip as a result of
that next year, Like, for example, Aaron Rodgers slipped into
Tier two this year for the first time ever because
he was injured and he's so much older, right, so
some of those factors. I think everybody would feel like,
if Aaron Rodgers were totally healthy and good to go,

(01:23:30):
he's a Tier one quarterback. But there's a debate to
be had once it's uncertain if you're going to be
able to do that. I don't think the people in
the league are to that point with Joe Burrow. I mean,
but if he were to have another injury this year,
they might start to get there.

Speaker 9 (01:23:42):
Does that make sense?

Speaker 2 (01:23:43):
No, No, totally I would agree with that.

Speaker 1 (01:23:45):
It's to me why this is such a critical season,
because if we go into next year and we're talking
about three of his five seasons being significantly impacted by injury,
on top of some of the other stuff that's happened
during the offseason, you have to lead the conversation by
mentioning the injuries. Can you reference two coaches who bring
up his injury history to you? Was there anybody? Was

(01:24:05):
there anybody as you canvassed all these people in the
league that didn't bring up.

Speaker 2 (01:24:09):
His injury history.

Speaker 17 (01:24:11):
Well, yes, I don't think every single person would mention it,
but there's a good number of them who are worried
about what it means for the long term for him.
That there's just been enough of them. And you know,
he stands in there and he's willing to take punishment,
and he's going to play tough and you know, run
free yards when he needs to, and that maybe his
body is telling us that that's not a that he

(01:24:34):
may not last as long as as typically a pocket
passer would. So I think there is a good healthy
level of concern about how long he's going to be
able to do it relative to some of the other guys,
So it is important for him to you know, string
together some seasons here. Most of the great quarterbacks don't
miss a ton of games, you know, they Philip Rivers

(01:24:57):
could play two hundred games in a row or you know,
right the most. They typically know how to play the
position to not get the worst types of hits. And
I think Burrow really knows how to play the position,
but he hasn't, for whatever reason, avoided some of those
things that the top quarterbacks usually avoid.

Speaker 2 (01:25:21):
Yeah, no's that's well put.

Speaker 1 (01:25:23):
Is there an area of his game that the people
you talk with would express that they'd like to see
him tap into a little bit more?

Speaker 17 (01:25:34):
I don't think so. I think everybody loves him when
he's planned. There's not a big you know, you know,
I mean, what's not to like about him?

Speaker 9 (01:25:42):
I mean, and part of that too, Like I thought.

Speaker 17 (01:25:45):
One of the really interesting things that was said about
him was that physically, there's not a huge difference between
like a Burrow and a Kirk Cousin's Physically, it's not
a huge difference.

Speaker 9 (01:25:57):
There's a difference.

Speaker 17 (01:25:58):
I mean, Joe's got a better arm, probably the difference
is in the mindset that Cousins is this kind of overthinker,
you know, who's stressing over everything, and Joe's just going
to go out there and play.

Speaker 9 (01:26:09):
He plays with a.

Speaker 17 (01:26:10):
Great confidence about him, and I think that is that
was a revealing way of putting it. To me, that
type of contrast that really sets him free to to,
you know, play in an aggressive, confident brand of ball.

Speaker 1 (01:26:26):
It's interesting you mentioned the arm strength because in all
that time we had to talk about the run up
to the twenty twenty draft, knowing they were taking Joe Burrow,
you can find folks who would say, well, his arm
isn't the strongest, and my counter to that was, it
doesn't have to be. It's it's strong enough. And it's
been interesting to me. And this is more of a
comment than it is a question. It's interesting to me

(01:26:48):
that he has done well enough, performed well enough, and
shown I guess enough arm strength that that's no longer
than something people really bring up. Was that I guess
was that your experience and talking with people around the NFL.

Speaker 9 (01:27:01):
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 17 (01:27:03):
The only concern was that if some of these injuries
might compromise it for him, you know, whether it's the
leg injuries that make it harder to really you know,
plant and drive. And then obviously he had a wrist
injury or a hand an arm injury that that really
could So one of the comments was, it makes to
see how the ball comes off his hand this year,
you know, just in light of some of these things.

(01:27:23):
Another one, I can't remember if I included this in there,
but I have on my screen here, you know, the
commentary that I collected from people on him, and it
was along the lines of the guy doesn't fall good,
he doesn't fall right right, there's a way of falling
to sort of, you know, to avoid injuries. That was
just an observation from somebody who's played him a number
of times. There's a lot of respect for his toughness

(01:27:46):
and willingness to take those shots. But you know the
results of that have have showed up too.

Speaker 2 (01:27:55):
Yeah, no question.

Speaker 1 (01:27:56):
Mike Sando from The Athletic, his annual Quarterback Tiers is out.
If you're a subscriber to The Athletic, chances are you've
already read it. If you're not well, you should be,
so go check it out. We have Paul Danner Junior
on the show every week. So we talked about the
athletic all the time, your reference like around the league,
and I can understand why there's a I think there's
a desire by some to see Patrick Mahomes in his

(01:28:18):
own tier. You've done this exercise for a while. Were
you tempted to create your own Patrick Mahomes tier?

Speaker 9 (01:28:27):
No?

Speaker 17 (01:28:27):
But no, but he is unanimous tier one. And that's
not even putting it strong enough. I mean you could,
we could pull a thousand people and you wouldn't find one,
you know, to put him in tier two. I think
he's historically different too, because he's got two of his
three championships that were one. We're on teams that were
not particularly good and actually we're poor in some cases

(01:28:47):
on defense. I think I think to really win it all, typically, yeah,
it's great to have a great quarterback, but historically all
those guys like Brady Troy Aikman, Joe Montana, you know,
Terry Bradshaw, they were all playing for teams that were
at least probably top ten or even top five defense
to really win it all. And if you look at
like Aaron Rodgers won championship that he won, you know,

(01:29:11):
they were top five defense and If you look at
Drew Brees the one year he won, I think they
were around top ten on defense and had a real
menacing defense that actually got him into trouble with the
bountygate rules. So for Mahomes to be able to do
this with different types of teams that weren't configured in
that way, race is a degree of difficulty in terms

(01:29:31):
of how much pressure is on the quarterback to carry it.
I think that's really remarkable about him and puts them
on a different course than some of those other guys.

Speaker 1 (01:29:39):
I was interested in seeing the placement of two AFC
North quarterbacks, and it feels like we're saying the same
things about the Browns and Deshaun Watson we were a
year ago. I guess with the benefit of Cleveland getting
to the postseason last year with Joe Flacco, I was surprised,
And so tell me if you were, that's still as
many people had to John Watson in Tier two as

(01:30:02):
they did.

Speaker 2 (01:30:02):
I think the number was thirteen.

Speaker 17 (01:30:04):
Yeah, thirteen, yeah, thirty five and Tier three and two
and Tier four. So I guess that shows you that
once you've played well, at some point you know that
equity lasts for a little bit of a little while.

Speaker 9 (01:30:19):
He has had.

Speaker 17 (01:30:19):
Injuries too, so maybe if he can have a little
bit of equip injuries, he can recapture some of what
he had before.

Speaker 9 (01:30:24):
But I do think he's falling.

Speaker 17 (01:30:26):
This is a snapshot in time of a quarterback who
people less and less expect to recover from this nose diive.
And now it's interesting that they just redid his contract again,
you know, and they're trying to, you know, manage the
cap implications of it. But there's not a lot of
optimism around Deshaun Watson.

Speaker 2 (01:30:46):
No, that's that's well put. I know.

Speaker 1 (01:30:50):
I know you get asked to do a lot of
these this week. Honored that you gave us some time.
I love your work, love this exercise every year, and
love the subsequent conversation.

Speaker 2 (01:30:59):
Mike, thanksh much.

Speaker 9 (01:31:01):
I love it.

Speaker 5 (01:31:02):
Maye.

Speaker 17 (01:31:02):
This is the only one that I've done. It's the
Cincinnati Focus. So every one of these is unique and
fresh and I enjoy it. So it's great.

Speaker 1 (01:31:09):
Yeah, thank you, Mike, Sando the Athletic go get his

billion things I have to get to between now and

first two shows are going to be at the Florence location,

Peaks and Florence the Tony and Mo Football Show. We
have been doing shows from Twin Peaks four years and
they're so good to us and both are very easy
to get to. Both have awesome weight staffs. The one
in Florence is right off Route eighteen, the Rout eighteen exit.
It's also right off the Turfway Road exit, depending on
which direction you're coming from. And then obviously the one

(01:32:20):
in Westchester right there off the Union Center Boulevard exit
very close to I seventy five, and it's a great
place to spend a Monday afternoon. Obviously, we have a
couple of Monday night games, so in those instances we
will be broadcasting from Twin Peaks on Tuesdays.

Speaker 2 (01:32:34):
But it's a great place.

Speaker 1 (01:32:37):
We are thrilled to have them back on board Twin
Peaks and again, the first show will be on Monday,
September the ninth, so that is a week from this
coming Monday. Twin Peaks and Florence will be there on
the ninth and the sixteenth, and then at the Westchester
location on Tuesday, September the twenty fourth, with the Bengals
playing a Monday night game the night before Twin Peaks.

We cannot wait to see you there this ball season

have like a few things I want to get to here.

thirty very quickly speaking of the Browns and I put
this on social media. They shared the news that Jim Donovan,
their longtime twenty five year radio play by play voice
who has been battling cancer for a while now, stepped
away from his duties last season and then broadcast some

(01:34:49):
games late in the year. Was there when the Browns
were in the playoffs against the Houston Texans. They announced
today with a statement from Jim Donovan that he is
epping away from the Browns broadcast booth and he mentions
that the cancer is getting aggressive, and you can go
read the statement I mentioned this. You know, first of all,

(01:35:11):
that's awful news. Secondly, Jim Donovan is a terrific broadcaster
who's done some network work, has been on TV in
Cleveland for years, and not that I find myself listening
on the radio to a lot of Browns games, but
you know, you become familiar with the guys who have
been doing it for a while, especially when they play
in your team's division. And Jim Donovan, you know the

(01:35:33):
sports talk radio playbook. Whoever the Bengals play, we try
to get someone on from that city and sometimes it's
you know, someone who covers the team broadcaster, and so
Jim Donovan has always come on with us, and last
year came on with this before the season opener and
he did that game, but he was he was going
through treatment and I wasn't sure he was going to
say yes, and he did and he was awesome, am I.

(01:35:57):
As we do this, one of my favorite people to
talk to, enthusiastic, genuine had a willingness to criticize the team,
laughed at my jokes, which is always important, and just
a really nice man and I always really look forward
to having them. So keep Jim Donovan in your thoughts
and pray for him and his family because I saw
that just a little while ago, and that made me sad,

(01:36:20):
because you know, you do this long enough, you have
people on your show and some just stand out is
maybe a little bit nicer than others, and that's Jim Donovan.
Reds are playing right now and early start five to ten,
first pitch because they have the Thomas rhet concert tonight.
They're already losing it for nothing. Julian aggi Are doesn't
have it. Oakland has two on in the top of

(01:36:42):
the second ending. It's four zip, thank god. There's a
concert tonight. A's trying to get out of town with
a sweep wearing those gorgeous Oakland A's road uniforms. Florence
Yaws play their final home game of the season tonight
against Joliet, and good news if you're a Saver basketball fan.
Top fifty recruit Nick Lewis has committed to XU, according

(01:37:04):
to on three recruits, I think they're the first people
to have reported it. Six to one point guard who
also had offers from Seaton Hall, Michigan, LSU, Georgetown, and Creighton.
Those are the ones he considered, among others. Good get
for Sean Miller. I think that's all I got for
the sports headlines, Taren, how are we on time?

Speaker 15 (01:37:23):
How are we doing on time? We are very low
on time. We don't have much time about two minutes
two minutes, so I don't have we have to get
to Tony Peck. I don't have time to share with
the radio audience. My Greg Maddocks obsession. I did put
this on Twitter last night. I will admit this is
something to be weirdly obsessed by. We don't have time

(01:37:44):
to play it on the radio. Greg Maddocks made up
a lie about his big league debut and the documentary
about him on MLB Network. Now, why I don't Why
do I care about this?

Speaker 1 (01:37:55):
I think it's interesting because he pitched his first he
made his big league debut in Cincinnati, But in the
documentary talks about facing Pete Rose, which didn't happen.

Speaker 2 (01:38:04):
And I don't know.

Speaker 1 (01:38:05):
I watched this on Monday evening and three days later,
I'm still obsessed by this. And I was gonna play
the audio and rant about it, but we don't have time.
What I can tell you is we have pole questions.
Thanks to United at Heartland Insurance, go to UHI ands
dot com. Number one we have two is the time
to work under the assumption that Jamar Chase won't play
Week one?

Speaker 2 (01:38:25):
Two thirds of you voting as early say yes.

Speaker 1 (01:38:29):
And then the other question is what is the bare
minimum that would constitute a successful season for UC football?
Six and six something in the seven to eight win range,
ten wins where the player simply having fun? Vote now
at moegar on x Tony Pike. Next, this baseball season,

(01:38:53):
when it's time to slow down your active life and
enjoy a ball game, make sure you bust open an
ice cold michelob Ultra. Michelob Ultra is brewed for active living.
Make a lobe ultras. It's the second last day of
season preview reports. Tony Pike is here. I'm not here tomorrow,
so this is the last time.

Speaker 2 (01:39:10):
Who's in for you? Chad? Okay that you and I
get a chance to do these seasons started reports for
the season with Chad Well.

Speaker 1 (01:39:17):
It's all come full circle, best full circle. It's a
sad day. Incredible it is. It's you know, maybe we
can put together a best of sure, a best of
season preview reports.

Speaker 2 (01:39:25):
I make a lot of people do negative.

Speaker 1 (01:39:27):
Probably. Travon Williams is back. Yes, his absence lasted a day.
He said, them cutting him yesterday was roster gymnastics. He
knew something. They put m Kelly Jackson on the uninjured reserve.
So you've got that, but you've got Travon Williams. I'm
less interested in Travon Williams. One of the unknowns about
this team is number one, how they deploy the running back.

(01:39:49):
Zach Taylor talked about it today. Number two, what kind
of production they're going to get from the running backs?
And I think number three and this ties into production
are they going to be capable of getting more explosive
plays from their running backs, which they couldn't last year.
Go ahead and speak to any of those things.

Speaker 11 (01:40:04):
Well, one, I do think they're capable of more explosive
plays because I think both backs, especially Chase Brown, is explosive.
Zach Taylor used the term earlier today interchangeable, and I
think that's really how I have viewed at all camp.
You know, there are camp battles that have taken place
if you wanted to get down the nuts and bolts
at running backs of camp battle, but I never thought

(01:40:25):
it was like seventy thirty based on the starter. It
was always going to be like fifty two to forty eight.
I thought, with who's going to get a lion's share
of the reps, they're going to go off feel they're
gonna go off who's the hot hand. And what's unique
is there's a lot of running back rooms in the
NFL that offer like that thunder lightning dynamic, or you
got like the big play threat and then you got

(01:40:46):
the short yardage threat.

Speaker 2 (01:40:47):
Ye.

Speaker 11 (01:40:47):
I feel like both backs are pretty much the same
in their skill set. They're both given the opportunity to
play three downs four downs if needed. They both can
get short yardage reps, they both can take two minute reps.
They're both effective in the past game. So I do
it's a unique way to approach a running back room
in today's NFL. But I think they have almost a
carbon copy of two of the same player in the

(01:41:09):
running back room, and you're just gonna kind of split
up reps accordingly.

Speaker 2 (01:41:12):
Well, and you reference this.

Speaker 1 (01:41:13):
What I think I like about Chase and Zach Moss
is with neither guy, are you automatically crossing off the
list something they can't do right? And nothing against Joe Mixon,
who was a fine player here, but toward the end
it was either there was two or three things that
we just said he can't do well that limits you
when he's on the field. It tips your hand perhaps
when he comes off the field. And so, you know,

(01:41:35):
I like the fact that you say what you want
about their level of skill set and where these guys
are in the pantheon of running backs. The Bengals are
never going to be a run first team as long
as Number nine as that quarterback.

Speaker 2 (01:41:47):
But at the very least with either guy, are.

Speaker 1 (01:41:50):
We saying, you know you can't put him on the
field on third down, or he just know what forget
about asking him to block an oncoming pass rusher, or
cannot be on the field in two minutes. I like
the fact that you could use both players in almost
any situation.

Speaker 11 (01:42:05):
Yeah, they want to be more under center, they want
to run the ball at times from under center, but
they're also trying to set up play action pass. They're
trying to get out of the pocket. And we mentioned
this with tight end a lot last year. If you
do have your full complement of weapons Chase Higgins, whoever
wide receiver number three is, Mike Kasiki, that's a lot
for a defense to navigate and the ability for both

(01:42:27):
of these running backs to one stay in and protect
when need be because some of the defense's answer will
be more pressure, and both of these running backs have
a knowledge of protections and how to protect. They also
both possess the ability to get out of the backfield
whenever need be and make plays in the passing game.
And I frame it in the same sense we talk
about tight ends with this team a lot. There's only

(01:42:47):
so many guys you can double team, which means favorable
matchups in one on one situations. For the running back
when they're used in the passing game, and unlike you
said in years past, it's not like you have to
run guys on the field on third down and tip
your hand with what's coming. I think it allows for
a little bit more of concealing what they want to
do on offense, a little more of the element of surprise,

(01:43:08):
and I think all those things together, it's not going
to be a top five running back room in the NFL,
but I think it's going to be a solid group.

Speaker 2 (01:43:15):
Hi, Tony, thanks so much. Tony.

Speaker 1 (01:43:16):
Back at it for since he three sixty. Tomorrow we
are off tomorrow. Chad Brenda will be filling in. Obviously,
