Speaker 1 (00:00):
DSPN fifteen thirty on my legger, Chad Rendle's here because
it's Thursday. Here's the good news for like six weeks
from early to mid August through right around this time year.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
I badger Chad by.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Asking him when the UC basketball schedule is gonna come out? Well,
about an hour and fifty minutes ago it came out,
so I can cross that off the list.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Hi, Chad.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
I called Brett or Mark, thank you, and I was like,
can we can we do it at four o'clock? So
then when Bo says do you know when the schedule
is gonna come out? I could be like ten minutes, Yeah,
it'll be on ten minutes, MoU, but he turned down.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
My understand he has a lot going on. You want
my takeaway from the schedule, Sure, it's.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Really hard, you know what me.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
That there's a one month stretch in there that they
can it's gonna be. It's hard. It's hard. It's like
going to love it, Guitard. There's a one month stretching
there where I think it can get some momentum like
the beginning the first four games, are you kidding me?
And then at the end you get Iowa State TCU, Baylor, Houston,
(01:10):
Kansas State kind of all in a bunch there at
the end, But I mean that middle from January fifteenth
to you know, roughly February eleventh, Like there's a lot
of winnable games in there. If this team's as good
as we think it should.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Be, I just don't want to be on the bubble.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
I don't want to be on the bubble in late
February when I look at who they have coming down
the scretch.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
I agree. I mean some of that's going to come
down to do you need to be really good in
the non conference. The schedule is a little bit better
this year to support that, and then what do you
do in those first four games? Because look for the
people that don't know, first four games at Kansas State
January fourth, home against Arizona, January seventh, at Baylor January eleventh,
(02:01):
home against Kansas. So there's supposed to be five top
fifteen level teams in the Big twelve, you play three
of them in a week. If you can come out
of that two and two, Like you know, we talked
about last year a lot the math wasn't mathing right.
You got to protect home court, and if you protect
home court. You're gonna be in a pretty good shape
in this league. It would be pretty damaging to start
(02:25):
oh and two at home, even though it's Arizona and Kansas.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Right, Yeah, well we'll see. I'd like i'd the very
I couldn't.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
I looked at I looked at for the first thirteen
days in Big twelve play, and I was, oh, boyd,
I don't see uh. I don't see a Tulsa or
an ECU on there.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
So Colorado's not gonna be I mean, they're they're they
lost a lot. Arizona State, we don't know about by
U and Utah in West Virginia has an entire new roster.
They do not have a single returning player UCF and
then BYU and Utah at home. Like you know, that's
(03:05):
a stretch where you can win some games.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
I think, all right, all right, you're getting you making
me feel good about it. This is what I like.
Are the Bearcat football team? Are they like good?
Speaker 3 (03:17):
It's funny. I asked Tony that exact question on the
sideline in the fourth quarter against Houston, and Tony are
these guys good? And Tony said, they've played one bad quarter.
You know, I think this week is kind of where
we start to find out the answer to that question.
Miami's Miami can't run the ball. Their offense is not good.
(03:40):
Houston couldn't throw the ball. Their offense is not good.
So the defense did what you wanted to see them
do against both of those teams, which was controlled the
game for the most part. Texas, tex is a different animal.
They can throw it. They've got a monster of a
running back that's six two and thirty pounds in TODs Brooks,
(04:01):
not to be confused with TODs Ward. Todz Brooks is
very very good, averaging like ninety ninety five yards a
game so far this season. So we're gonna find out
a lot about the defense Saturday night. The offense, the
offense is good, Like the pieces are there. You have
(04:21):
a good offensive line, you have a really good number
one receiver, a really good NFL level tight end, you
have a great college running back and Corey Kiner, like
those are the ingredients. And then Brendan Soursby, I think,
would you say, he's been better, even better, maybe a
little bit than you expected.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Far better than I expected I expected.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Look, I thought he could throw it him just looking
the part, he looks like a seasoned Big twelve quarterback,
like season. I mean, you're around the program all the time.
But I was I think I mentioned this on the air,
but I was having a conversation with somebody on Tuesday
in the Lender Center who's like, like this, this dude
just gets it, Like he treats this like a job.
(05:06):
He treats this like he's a pro quarterback. And you know,
we can make all the jokes about these guys being
pros right now, but he's like, you know what you
what you see on game day is a reflection of
like this guy gets it.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
He gets what the job is all about.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
He gets the leadership, he understands like setting the tone
like he's he just gets it, and it's it's refreshing
to hear. So you add that to what you're watching,
which what I'm watching is above and beyond what I
thought I would be seeing in September.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
It's it's been, it's been really something to behold.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
He's exactly what you think of when you think power
five level quarterback. Yeah, I think that's the best way
I could describe it. He can make the throws, he
can read the defense like he doesn't get sped up.
I think like that, you know, I said this last
night on the bcjpod. When I think back to Emry Jones,
it was like his head was on a swivel, right,
(05:58):
Like when you watch Brendan Soresby through his progressions, you
can see his helmet like read the progression. Is that
guy open? Is this guy open? Is that guy open?
It's not like he's just like scanning them like haphazardly.
He is identifying, like is this the guy I'm gonna
throw the ball to or not? And that's how NFL
(06:20):
quarterbacks operate. I mean that's not to say he's an
NFL quarterback, but like he just has those those traits
and they put a lot of good pieces around him.
So I'm not entire like you know, it's it's gonna
be crazy. I still haven't found out that. The question
I want to know mo from from Lubbick is do
they throw corn or flower tortillas?
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Try to get an answer for I suppose.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
It's an important like you would think corn tortillas are
a little little little less pliable than than flower tortilla.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Correct, there's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Tortillas flying everywhere. The place is gonna be nuts. It's
gonna be a great test. But one thing I didn't note,
like two of you know, Brendan Zoresby started seven games
at Indiana. His two best games were probably at Penn
State and at Illinois. Right, so this guy's gone into
toughs environments and played pretty well. So I'm not super
(07:18):
worried that you're going to like, you know, lose him
so to speak, because you're playing on the road.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
All right, I got like ninety seconds here. The thing
about the defense, and I've brought up to you every
single week, all the discussion about the three three five. Look,
they're going to get a significant test on Saturday, I
do think, and this was something we talked about in
the radio during the game, like you could see them
getting it. You could see the light bulb coming on,
and they look are their deficiencies defensively, Yes, they have
(07:47):
injury issues whatever, But against Pittsburgh, I felt like they
were thinking. And then when you're thinking, you're not reacting
and you're a step slow. It feels like they get
the scheme. Doesn't mean it's a perfect defense, it's not,
but that goes a long way toward being able to
I don't know get stops in the game like this,
and that's not something I was saying too two three
(08:08):
weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
Yeah, again, Miami can't run, Houston's can't pass, So that
allows you to be a little more dialed in on
what you have to shut down. I'm interested to see
what it looks like against Texas Tech because they can
do both, and they can do both at a pretty
high level. So that's the next step is can they
(08:30):
shut off both fasts because I think that's ultimately what
it got them in trouble against Pitt is they were
getting beat on the ground and then tried to adjust
to stop that, and then Pitt just kind of work
that area in between the linebackers and the defensive backs,
let their guys catch the ball with the head of
steam and it resulted in a lot of big plays.
(08:51):
Texas Tech is going to be able to do that
if Cincinnati has to over commit to one or the other.
So playing better and that's without question with this defense.
And you know, the next thing for me, I need
to see the linebacker play continue because of that. The
one thing if you go back and look at Iowa
(09:12):
State their linebacker play during Tyson Bite's time there was
dominant and that's what made that defense so good. I
think their Goldey is starting to figure Jake Golda is
starting to figure out. I think figure it out. I
think Jared Bartlett has been very good. Simey and Coleman
for a freshman, has been improving every week. So as
(09:34):
that linebacker corps continues to grasp and grow in this
defense to better and better, I think it can be
