Speaker 1 (00:00):
The fallball portion of the UC baseball calendar is getting underway.
You can go watch the team scrimmage on Sunday evening
at six thirty. They've got open scrimmages and exhibitions. They've
got one against Purdue coming up on the twenty seventh.
They're gonna head to pit for an exhibition game on Saturday,
October the eleventh. Jordan Bischell's team this season, we'll have

(00:22):
twenty one newcomers, including eight from the transfer portal. Obviously,
last year was awesome watching the Bearcats get to the
NCAA tournament. And I can't wait to see what coach
Bischell puts on the field year number three. And he's
got a new contract extension kind enough to give us
a few minutes before he goes to the Reds games.
And I, coach, it's good to have you. How are you.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
I'm doing well, Appreciate you having me on though.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
It's always good to have you. So fallball right the
season itself months away. Give me an idea on a
typical basis what you try to accomplish during the fall period.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Yeah, you know, I think the biggest thing is when
we get to the next semester, we basically have four
weeks four and a half weeks from the start of
the semester to our first game, which, when we talk
about again twenty one newcomers, that's a lot of learning
and a lot of development that needs to take place.
So this fall period is really really about getting ahead

(01:18):
of that, and a lot of our development goes on
this fall. So you know, three weeks we spend in
small groups kind of getting them acclimated to what we do,
what's our hitting approach, how do we run the bases,
getting arms in shape, into moving And now this week
we've started more kind of full on practice where pitchers
are starting to face hitters. But what that builds into
is the end of this week starting to do some

(01:39):
inter slat and scrimmage. But really, I think the goal
is to take a group of guys who are coming
from a lot of different spots, different philosophies, and by
the time we wrap end of October, feel like I
feel like we're playing kind of as more cohesive unit
with with the style we play.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
So you'll be able to better answer this question by then,
but I'll ask it anyway, what do you like about
your club?

Speaker 2 (02:02):
I think just being in year three, you know, the
expectation level has changed, which is a good thing. We
were holding ourselves to a pretty high standard in which
we want. But the roster depth continues to improve, and
we've had a lot of good players, but it's starting
to construct in more, maybe a more complete sense, where
as these recruiting classes are coming in as the transfer

(02:23):
portal strengthened. For us, just feeling like top to bottom,
it's maybe the most complete team we've had. I'm pretty
excited about that.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
For folks who follow college football and basketball, you can't
follow those sports without talking about the transfer portal. Give
me an idea from a timeline perspective how it works
in college baseball.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Yeah, June is really a huge month for us. Basically
as soon as we get through the opening regional round,
which is early June, it opens for about thirty days
till the end of June, and most of that early
movement of guys going in at that first and then
it kind of trickles in after it, and I think

(03:03):
that month of June is when a lot of these
guys start to make those decisions. Obviously we've got the
full summer, but for us, you know, it was kind
of June tenth to June thirtieth was let's rebuild the
open spots. So June's are really I think historically June
was the month where he got out and started to
see a ton of high school guys, and there's still
some of that, but there's a lot more of the

(03:24):
on campus for us. It was nice to wrap that
up in June so we could spend July in August
thinking more about future high school classes.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
What are these coming weeks like for a freshman getting
his first taste of college baseball, I would imagine to
a degree at least for some, it's got to be overwhelming.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
It's a lot of failure for guys that have right,
I mean, they've seen a ninety mile an hour pitcher
here and there, and they've played some high level competition,
but to do it day in and day out all well,
learning a new hitting approach, a new base running philosophy,
being in the weight room more than they ever had
like it. It's just as and so guys that you

(04:02):
know are very good players sometimes don't look all that
good until they settle in. And so we've worked hard
to push with those guys. We're not worried about the
end result at all. Right now, it's the process of
getting better and we'll worry about results once you settle
in a little more. But I'd say for three quarters
of them, you know, they look a little overmatched the
first couple of weeks in and we expect that. Uh.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Jordan Visial is with us, the head baseball coach at
the University of Cincinnati. When we were lining this up,
we were exchanging time Sports Information office, and I was told,
with Jordan's going to the Reds game, so can we
do it before five o'clock? So what I want to
know is when you go to a baseball game, When
you go to a Major League baseball game, are you
capable of just sitting back and watching it maybe the
way I would, or are you always having that analytical

(04:47):
eye and thinking about the game like a coach or
a manager.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
You know, when you go to the game with two
eight year olds and at sixty year old and they're
probably listening right now, mostly are trying to figure out
where the nearest concession. Fans. Yes, so they get their
Glizzi their hot dogs. Apparently that's the new.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
But well done.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Yeah, so that's the key. But no, it is. You know,
Ian HAPs in town. He's the Cincinnati alum. I've developed
for good relationship with him. So we're gonna get boot
out of the stadium because the kids are probably wearing
the in half jersey tonight. But it'll be good to
see him play. Obviously, the Reds are playing for a lot,
and our kids will say they want Ian to hit
two home runs, but they want to see the Reds whin.
That's that's their intention.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
All right, we can I'll work with that. That'll that'll fly.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
I think Ian is an absolute Red killer. Yes, I.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
On the on the list of guys who have just
crushed them over the years. Uh, he is. He is
at the top. But we we don't despise him the
way we have you know, guys like Lance Berkman and
some many that I can name. So but yes, I
would love it if he was somewhat held in check
this weekend. But I get it. Awesome to have you
congratulations on on the new contracy. Can thank you enough

(06:01):
for doing this and we'll chat as the season itself
gets closer. Thanks so much.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah, give bus anytime. Always appreciate you having me on.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
Awesome stuff. Good deal. Jordan Bischell, baseball coach at the
University of Cincinnati. The first open scrimmage Sunday at six
point thirty. They have an exhibition against Purdue that is
going to be on Saturday, September the twenty seventh, and
their Red and Black World Series, which is happening in
late October.
