Zach Taylor at the podium right now talking with the
assemble Pro Football media.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
I just see a big old five to nothing in
the turnable margin, which led to hot in that so
really never give herself an opportunity to have momentum, have confidence.
When when every bit of momentum you get is then
taken away, it's tough. And so again I thought sequencing
in the first half, the defense get a touch on
the first drive and then they got some three and
outs help them to a field goal. In the short
(01:10):
year three short field. So there were there were some
positive things that was far from perfect. There's a lot
of things we got to clean up. Offensively, there's a
lot we got to clean up as well. We got
to find some momentum in the run game. They pressure
you from a lot of different looks. They don't make
life easy on you the vikings, But there's there was
more opportunity there than we gave ourselves a chance to
take advantage of. And part of that is just sustaining
(01:31):
the drives without turning the ball over gives you a
chance to gain some momentum in the run game as well,
and we never gave her some set shot.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
When you go back and look at Chase Brown's runs
in particular, is there a common thread of things that
you were seeing that wasn't what it needed to be?
Speaker 5 (01:45):
Or I think it's everybody involved in that.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
It's not the running back, it's not just the line,
it's not just the tight end there. There's everybody involved
in that. There were times, you know where the other
backs were in there was there was a great opportunity
there and they took advantage of it. And so I
do think that they ran well. I think that's also
going to look at, Okay, Chase is yards per carry
and the other guys Chase, some of it was a
little bit opportunity with the scheme we hit first the
(02:10):
front that they had. But again, we've got three backs
that we believe in that we think we can all
use in different ways. So to put that on Chase
is it but unfair because it was the unit as
a whole.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Well, I mean, has that been surprising though? I mean
that's been the most surprising thing of these first three
weeks is the fact that you know, expectations were through
the roof for Chase and what he's going to look
like is various forty seven carries for ninety three yards
right now.
Speaker 6 (02:33):
Is that something where you look at it and.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Say we're doing it wrong.
Speaker 7 (02:37):
No.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
I think as a unit, we got to be better
in the running game.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
We have to do a great job identifying the scheme
that we've got a lot of confidence in to be
able to give the running backs opportunity, and our guys
need to step up and do a great job with
that scheme. And so I think it's unfair to put
it on a players. It's on all of us offensively
collectively to find a better answer. I do think that
we've we've faced three challenging defenses early in the sea,
(03:00):
and you can't make an excuse for that. We've got
to find our way to put pressure on them and
stop saying it's about the defense. There's got to be
moments where we attack the defense and put them on
their heels, and we just got to find some momentimum
drives to be able to do that, and yesterday we
were far from finding momentum drives.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
A lack of physicality. Yeah, how do you explain that?
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Yeah, it's hard to explain. You don't want to have
to explain that, But that's the true We got to
get moving off the ball, increase in displacement so that
there's some space for these backs to make make some
hay And again that that was the challenge yesterday and
we've talked to everybody.
Speaker 5 (03:34):
About that up front.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
That again, whenever you talk about protection and physicality and
the run game, you immediately think of just the offensive line.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
That's everybody involved.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
That's that's the backs, that's the tight ends, that's the receivers,
that's the quarterbacks on their fakes, trying to pull an
extra hat and soften people up. That's play calling, marrying
things together, so you can't tee off on people and
make one phase of the offense difficult. So we all
play hand in that. There's not one person or one
one group you're going to point to. We all got
to own that and be better at a moon forward.
Speaker 8 (04:03):
There's a lot I don't understand about the one game
and that kind of stuff, but it looked like you
were doing a lot of different stuff outside stuff obviously.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
The Mortar center.
Speaker 8 (04:12):
Yeah, how much of that was the quarterback change?
Speaker 9 (04:14):
How much that was.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Minnesota's Yeah, it's a high percentage of Minnesota. I mean
they're a unique defense. They present a lot of different challenges.
Getting Van gain Cole and Harrison Smith back makes their
defense hole again, which they didn't have the league before.
They haven't had Harrison all season, so they're a really
challenging defense. I think that's going to take shape over
the course of the season. You're going to really see that.
(04:35):
But again, we've got to find ways to attack and
put people on their heels, and that starts with the
momentum down the field and scoring on a possession and
gaining some momentum. And every time we really threatened to
do that. We kind of took the window of our
own sales by allowing them to take the ball away
from us. And so here you are kind of having
to defend a lot of things in the offense justly.
You know, it's it's we didn't do well enough, and
(04:57):
those are fair questions.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Twenty three lust to funnel all year.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Yeah, just the messaging this week about putting the ball
on the ground, what will.
Speaker 6 (05:04):
That sound like?
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yeah, it's again I think pitch summarize the best in
our meeting this morning. You can you can say it's
anomaly to have five and one game, five balls on
the ground of one game when we've had i think
three in the last seven on the ground. But it
is what it is. They saw an opportunity to hunt
the ball and get it out. So there's something there
with us. And they came in bunches like we always
(05:25):
pretty store defense. The stuff's going to come in bunches
when you can punch the ball out. And yesterday from Minnesota,
they did an outstanding job hunting our guys and finding
opportunity and we did not do good enough job securing it.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
And none of them were outlandish.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
We have watched the TV copy showed the team the
TV copy of every single one of them, and none
of them were outlandish separation, oh you know, ball below
the elbow. It was all fair stuff that we talked about.
They just did a great job punching, grabbing wrists, getting
the ball out and then feasting on that. And then
once they created a momentum, it was easy for him.
You know, it just became fun for their defense. And
(05:59):
we didn't do anything to count of that.
Speaker 7 (06:00):
In a game that you couldn't run effectively. You had
six targets for Jamar, you had two for Tea and
none for Onre.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
I explained that, well, we.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
Were in a lot of twelve personnel, so twelve personnel
and in theory regulates their defense a little bit based
on what we've seen, so that that Andrea is subbing
in for those other two guys, and that's not how
we're going to play the whole season. That's sometimes just
how you have to play an opponent. And I think Andrea,
over the course of the seventeen game season is going
to take shape for him. And he's a guy that's patient,
understands his role, appreciate the role that he plays for
(06:33):
us because of a lot of his dirty stuff that
he puts his nose in there and gets it done,
and his opportunities will come and it'll take shape over
the course of this season. And there's nothing that he's
done to minimize his role. That's just the way that
this game has played out for us, and yesterday's.
Speaker 7 (06:46):
Game, the way that up polled is why why weren't
there a lot of opportunities for Team Jamorrow.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
We didn't have a lot of opportunities to get first outs.
I mean we kept turning the ball over every time
across the fifty yard line, we put the ball on
the ground, we threw the ball to them, so that
minimize as your opportunities. And then you get late in
the game and you know, we're trying different things to
just gain some momentum going forward at that point, and
they challenge they do a good job. I mean, they
don't make it easy to get the ball to Jamar.
I can promise you that that's somebody they're trying to
(07:12):
take away. And same with Tea and again, we just
we couldn't find a great rhythm to be able to
get those guys to the ball enough.
Speaker 7 (07:18):
I talked about the ball on the ground being the
argument that it could be an anomaly, what about the
game as a whole, And you guys talking about how
kind of just throwing.
Speaker 6 (07:27):
This one away, like Okay, that's not going to happen again.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Like no, no, no, no, we can't allow this to
beat us again. You know, we've got to turn this
into a victory in some way, shape or form where
we learn from all these turnovers, the lack of takeaways
from our defense and grow from this. And so again
we got to be better going forward because of some
of the mistakes we've made.
Speaker 5 (07:46):
And so it's not a throwaway. You take those turnovers
out of the equation.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
I can't sit here and say that we're going to
win the game or it's going to be that's fantasy
land to know how that was going to play out.
But there was enough stuff that we've got to clean up,
just fundamentally in all three phases to give herself a
better chance to be quality opponents going forward. And so
there's enough all around that we can't ignore that we
got to clean up. Even taking the turnovers out of
the equation, we've got to be a better team going forward.
(08:12):
And and I'm very confident that we'll do that. I
think guys had the right approach when they came into
the building Today. Position coach is doing a great job
attacking everything we got improved and emphasizing the things that
we were good at. You know, it's not every play
wasn't bad. There were some positives in this game, and
we've got to continue to build on that.
Speaker 8 (08:27):
Looking even broader than just this game, like, you are
two rookie guards in there at one point. Are the
challenges the rookie offense one face and how do you
feel like you have handled?
Speaker 3 (08:35):
Yeah, I mean just the things they haven't seen before.
Communication elements we're looking on and sometimes they're seeing something
for the first time that you can't always prepare them for,
and you know, it's it's that can be a challenge,
But we've got two really smart guys that are that
are willing to learn from their experiences. And I think
you're gonna see with all the rookies, there's gonna be
a mistake that they make at some point in the
(08:57):
season that they won't make again for the rest of
their career, and you got to continue to push through that.
Speaker 5 (09:01):
That's something you live with when you play young players.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
We're fortunate that we have very capable, very intelligent players
that are out there and they kind of see it
the second they did it. They can self diagnose what
we're wrong there and make the correction. So I think
we're going to pay dividends in the end with those
young guys playing, because the mistakes will come, will overcome them,
and they'll be better for it. And so again, there's
(09:24):
a lot of positives from these young guys playing. You
mentioned the guards. There's a lot of positives from these
young guards.
Speaker 7 (09:28):
Playing with young players when you're trying to figure out
everything else about the offense right now and they come
up with game plans, how much of a challenge is
it for them to keep pace along with that stuff
they're working on by themselves.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
They're part of the unit, you know, And so again,
you can't treat them like rookies. You can't treat them differently. Again,
they've done a great job handling everything we've delivered at them.
There's sometimes there's going to be a look or something
that comes their way during the game that they're experiencing
for the first time. You can't prepare them for everything,
and again, they'll learn from it. Continue to move on.
But I've been pleased with what we've seen from our rookies.
(10:04):
I think it's a really good class from top to bottom.
Those guys are all getting opportunities at different times, and
they've all shown us the reasons why they're here and
that they're going to help us now and in the future.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
I feel like every NFL game I watched this year,
the quarterback is under frequent duress in your years in
the league, whether it's the athleticism on that side of
the ball, of the schemes.
Speaker 6 (10:24):
Is it harder to protect than ever, It's.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
Harder to compare to other years.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
I feel that we watch the tape of the opponents
every week, and you watch some other games and you
feel that you feel quarterbacks under duress. And we just
got to continue to put together great plans to help us.
We can't worry about all the other quarterbacks and all
the other offenses. We just have to focus on us
finding the best plan to be able to protect Jake
(10:50):
and find completions and run the ball to compliment that
and score points moving forward.
Speaker 5 (10:55):
Yesterday wasn't good enough.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
P Ryan and fant are they both potentially available?
Speaker 5 (11:01):
Well?
Speaker 3 (11:01):
See I mean fans gonna have to go through the
concussion protocol, so I'm not going to make any predictions
there how that that goes. So I think we we
avoided a significant long term issue, and so we'll just
work through the week and see how he ends up.
Speaker 5 (11:16):
But that was that was at least.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
Partially good news on that it's not a long term
surgical issue.
Speaker 6 (11:21):
Continue.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Yeah, it kind of high calf area, and so we'll
work through the week and make our decisions. We got
an extra day here to see where everbodys at make
our decisions there, Well you continue to go as a
rotation linebacker or is that more? We've got good players there,
you know, and so I think finding roles for all
those guys is important. Again, it's it's a really good group.
(11:46):
We feel like we've got depth there. We felt we've
got leadership there, we got youth there. So again, we'll
just continue to find ways to find roles for everybody.
Speaker 8 (11:56):
Is it what is it about there?
Speaker 6 (11:58):
You feel like when you're out.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
There that spring well, I think you know that's why
we drafted him. You know, he's tremendous leadership, tremendous poise,
high level of intelligence, great quickness, ability to keep and
diagnose you. You can use that description on a lot
of the linebackers we have in that room, and I
think for those young linebackers it's there's never been a
(12:19):
moment where it's.
Speaker 5 (12:19):
Too big for those guys. They fit in well. It
doesn't mean that.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
They're going to be perfect to not make mistakes and
be a step slow at times, but they continue to
work through it, and I've been pleased with the progress
both of his rookies that made there.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
Is there a benefit for Logan of him not being
on the field as much that you view as part
of that or why you guys did that?
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Well, I think I don't ever think it's it's a
bad thing for a guy to take a break for
a snap or two, and for segments of the game,
the way that game was flowing, it was a great
opportunity to get other guys in there and get him
a chance. It was realistically, when that thing at halftime
is thirty four to nothing, we still held that hope
coming out in the second half, trying to put pressure
on them to at least score some points and hold them,
(12:59):
and that didn't really happen. As the third quarter ensued,
and so it's an Octune. Let's get some other guys
in there and get them a chance to go out
there and play football.
Speaker 5 (13:07):
Okay, thank you, Zach Taylor.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
Breast Conference on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of
US Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
There you go, Zach Taylor talking with the Assemble Pro
Football Media in the aftermath of the most lopsided loss
in Bengals history. You may be too young to remember
the nineties. We all know how bad the Bengals were
in the nineties. If you wanted a modern day example
of what it was like to watch the Bengals in
the nineteen nineties, you saw it yesterday, a forty eight
(13:41):
ten ass whooping at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings.
We are broadcasting today from Twin Peaks in Florence. Right
off I seventy five. You can get off with the
Turfway ROADEX and then get here for the first Tony
and Mo Football show from this location. We're back here
next Tuesday. Because the Bengals play on Monday Night Football.
There's obviously a lot of ground to cover between now
(14:02):
and six o'clock as it relates to the Bengals I'm
not ignoring the Reds today.
Speaker 6 (14:05):
Nope, We're not gonna do it. Nope.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
You know, I put on social media Tony and Mo
Baseball Show. I believe in giving the people what they want,
and so we're gonna do some baseball today because I
think the Reds have earned it. I think, quite frankly,
that's where the temperature of the Cincinnati sports fan is
right now. That's where the attention of the Cincinnati sports
fan is right now, I should say, being aimed at
(14:27):
the Reds. And there's push for the last playoff spot.
So we're gonna do that a little bit later on,
but we will begin to dissect what happened yesterday in
Minneapolis when we come back. It's fourteen minutes after three o'clock.
Toni and Mo Football Show Twin Peaks in Florence on
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station Buck. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty Moegger with Tony pike Ki. It's the Toni
(14:49):
and Mo Football Show broadcasting today in Florence.
Speaker 10 (14:54):
We're at Twin Peaks. If it should be a good.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Money night football game. So if you're looking for a
place to Ravens v. Lions, Twin Peaks here in Florence,
tons of TVs. Thinking ahead to any of the Reds
games this week or next week. You can watch Reds
Baseball here or Monday Night Football a week from tonight
Bengals Broncos, or anything that I haven't mentioned yet.
Speaker 10 (15:17):
Twin Peaks in Florence.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
Awesome menu, great beer selection, killer bourbon selection, and amazing
staff and a terrific experience.
Speaker 10 (15:27):
We thanked the staff here for having us and we
have lots to.
Speaker 6 (15:31):
Talk about, so much to talk about. This is our
eleventh year during the Tony and Mo football. Yes, I
think going back and rewatching what happened yesterday is the
worst game that I've remembered doing in eleven years. What
was the worst part the way they seemed completely unprepared
(15:52):
for anything Minnesota did, and I thought that they quit.
And under Zach Taylor, that's been the one constant. They
play hard, they push other teams in the NFL. There's mismatches,
there's players that play herd or guys that have to
play in certain roles. Those teams find a way through
scheme to compete and be competitive. And I listened at
(16:17):
the last question Zach Taylor answered, where he said, you know,
we came out in the second half with something to
prove and put pressure on them. No, you didn't. You
came out in the second half and you ran a
ball for minus two yards, like pressure on them. And
then would you your favorite thing in football, the second
long run, first drive out of the half, regardless of
what the score is, go win a half, show some fight. Yeah,
(16:38):
second twelve minus two yard run, they run it on
second twelve, sacked on third down, they punt the ball away,
and they give up a ten play touchdown drive. So
tell me how you fought at all in the second half.
If you want to pull guys out, pull Jamar pool Tea.
That's fine. I thought they quit, and I thought they
looked completely unprepared for anything Minnesota did.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
That to me is the more unforgivable part.
Speaker 10 (17:03):
They quit thing. I don't disagree.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
I don't want to excuse it, but like anecdotally, player
to player, I get it. We're getting smoked. We just
lost our quarterback. This has been a really trying week.
Speaker 6 (17:17):
Like and if that was the point, then just pull
your guys.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Yeah, I have no idea forty eight to three and
Jamar Chason T. Higgins why don't get that, which is inexplicable.
I thought from the first Minnesota offensive series they looked
completely ill prepared. Ye both sides of the ball. You
can complain about officiating if you want. I thought top
to bottom when I think of when I think of
(17:42):
the nineties as a Bengals fan, I think of helplessness
because you either knew they were going to lose, or
you were interested in seeing what new way to lose
they would invent, or you just felt like the other
team was at a hyperadvantage because your team was just
(18:05):
not going to be prepared to play. And that's what
yesterday felt like to me. It felt like mentally and physically, schematically,
they were not ready to play.
Speaker 10 (18:17):
The third game of the season.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
So all I heard all week was there's a level
of resolve in this locker room because of coming off
the Joe Burrow injury. These guys are determined to do
something this year. They're determined to show that they're more
than just Joe Burrow. They're going to rally around Jake Browning.
Speaker 6 (18:35):
Zach was asked if he had to say anything, he said, no,
we got the right locker room.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
What I saw yesterday was the antithesis of any of that.
I would almost expect a performance like that from a
team with a new head coach, not the case, or
a team just chock full of guys who have had
no NFL success, that's not the case. A team that
had a quarterback who was getting his first NFL start,
that wasn't the case. That was complete and total lack
(19:02):
of preparation. And that begins and ends. I'm not a
gratuitous beat up on Zach guy. That begins and ends
with the head coach.
Speaker 6 (19:11):
They they've had Jake Browning in this system for how long?
Speaker 10 (19:15):
This is the fourth year he's been.
Speaker 6 (19:17):
A Carson Wentz got to Minnesota in August, which quarterback
looked like he was more comfortable in the system. It
goes without saying it wasn't even close, right, Like I say,
on all levels, Like we've done shows after tough losses.
The Jeremy Hill fumble. Yeah, like that's just that's bad luck.
It's football, that's football. Yeah, rarely have we had to
do a show, especially in the Zach Taylor era, where
(19:39):
we talk about effort and guys rolling over and waving
the white flag. That happened yesterday. That's worrisome because there's
fourteen more of these things left and it's not going
to get an easier because if you if you go
Monday and it's different, you say, okay, one bad week,
the Joe Burrow effect. They took a punch and they
bounced back resiliency like well, talk about what the Reds later.
(20:01):
If this turns into another game similar to this against Denver,
here comes Detroit, there goes Green Bay, then this starts
to unravel quick.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
But the.
Speaker 6 (20:13):
Inability to be prepared I knew going into the game.
Carson Wentz in the last decade one of the top
ten quarterbacks in the league and getting the ball out
under two point five seconds. Yesterday he was nine of
twelve when getting the ball out under two point five seconds.
Do you remember at all yesterday him having to throw
a deep ball over the top.
Speaker 10 (20:34):
No, no, not.
Speaker 6 (20:35):
In my opinion, that's unprepared. Carson Wentz does something really good.
You did nothing to take it away. You have not
been able to run the ball against anyone. You're the
worst statistical running team in the league, but you want
to be a run team. Did you do anything scheme
wise to give yourself an advantage? No? You're unprepared. What
(20:56):
were the answers? Why we've said this for years or
I have Why do I watch every NFL game on
Sundays and I see guys open catching passes, and for
the Bengals, it never seems like it's that easy. Guys
are never in an open window where it's a catch,
move the chains and go forward. Everything seems hard and
most coaches are going to get out coached by Kevin
(21:18):
O'Connell and Brian Flores, not to that extent, not to
the extent where it looked like you had no idea
what they were gonna do and they knew everything. It
was almost like they knew if we give them this look,
they're gonna do that. And then we got them. That's
how advanced it felt yesterday. Watch this, we'll show this,
they'll do that. We got them, We'll show this, they'll
(21:40):
check to that.
Speaker 2 (21:41):
It was.
Speaker 6 (21:42):
It was one of the most disheartening games I've ever
watched in that sense.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
So there's the effort part of this, and then there's
just the how they've played. So they are two and one,
which is fine. They're a missed field goal and a
shake call away from being zero to three. So there
is a big part of me that doesn't want to
(22:07):
just overreact to one awful day or the turnovers mounted.
The thing started a snowball, It got away from them,
and they lost a blowout to a well coached team.
But it ain't like they played great against the Browns.
We admitted they got lucky. It ain't like they were
awesome against Jacksonville. That PI call had a tremendous effect
(22:30):
on the outcome of the game. Sometimes the flag goes
your way. But how has anybody watched these first three games?
Forget the scores, forget the results. How has anybody watched
how they've played these three games knowing that for the
foreseeable future Joe Burrow ain't coming back. Yeah, and feel
good about what this team has in front of it,
(22:53):
just over the course of the next month.
Speaker 6 (22:54):
That's the hard part, is the Zach Taylor side. And
then there's just the personnel side, right, and you start
to wonder, like what I started looking into last night,
how much does Joe Burrow or has Joe Burrow hidden? Right?
And we always talk about what Joe at the line
of scrimmage? How many times is Joe checking out of
what Zach calls uh huh and getting up there like Hi,
running at.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
You texted me last I'm I switch that you texted
me last night. Tough day for the everything's Joe Burrow's.
Speaker 6 (23:20):
Yeah, like I'm watching last time, like where's t where's
Josie Vash? Where are these? And zach' saands Today was
well we were in a lot of twelve. Well then
why do we pay Trey like? Nothing makes sense? Their
offensive line. We'll dive into the offensive line today. I
got nothing. I don't know. What I do know is
(23:41):
the offensive line on paper is past like past block,
past block. Dalton Rising are a great pass blocker if
you go by profoot. None of their guys that are
young were plus run block guys in college. Dylan fairjown
to Marius Mams, Orlando Brown junior, you want to watch
some some scary stuff, flip on the tape from Orlando
Brown Junior yesterday. Not good. Dalton Reisner on his back
(24:05):
more than he was upright. Ted Karras thirty five out
of thirty five NFL centers right now and pressures allowed
worst in the league. What did he just get? Pay
Race fourth worst run blocking center in the NFL? So
here's the issue now, and this is why it's not
a quick fix. They wanted to be a group that
could protect Joe Burrow and they failed in that. They
(24:28):
didn't build this offensive line to be a running team.
And if you're not built that way, you sure as
heck better be able to scheme that way. And they
have shown zero signs of being able to scheme. So
twelve personnel, eleven personnel, twenty one personnel, whatever you want
to call it. They can't run out of any personnel.
And t Higgins and andre Yoshi vash are nowhere to
(24:49):
be found. What's the makeup of this team right now? Correct?
And where are they going forward? All the money's locked
up in tea and Jamar Yeah, got Trey on this
one year deal. What's gonna happen with him? By the way,
he's been great. I don't know on either side of
the ball how you can walk away and think, Okay,
(25:11):
that's just a flash in the pan, because as you said,
it's been three weeks. They've not played well in three
weeks well, and.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
The biggest issue yesterday was a recurring one, and that's
they can't run it like that's not a twenty twenty
five anomaly the league. That has been a theme of
the Bengals offensively for a long time now, and again
it's not run it more often, although you want to.
When you have Jake Browning as your quarterback, it's run
it more effectively. Which it doesn't matter who the running
(25:42):
back is or who the offensive linemen are. That has
been a constant for seven years now. They're not a
good running team. Suddenly I'm supposed to suddenly believe.
Speaker 6 (25:53):
They're going to be one. We both partake in gambling. Yeah,
if you and I sat down for a game and
before every snap we bet a dollar runner pass, you'd
probably be able to tell what's coming. Uh huh. They
don't disguise anything. Right, here comes a run, Right, here
comes a pass. It's that easy, right, So if you're
not disguising it, you're not gonna fool anyone on the
other side of the ball defensively. So again, the run
(26:15):
scheme doesn't match. I don't think that their pass protection
matches their routes that they run. It just doesn't seem
like anything is coordinated there. And I go back. I
think Joe Burrow just hides so so much that now
it's not a five to six to seven game span.
End of the season. You're just killing time. You got
fourteen more weeks to go. The advanced scouting book is out.
(26:38):
Joe Burrow is not protecting and saving this team anytime soon.
How do they find success offensively?
Speaker 2 (26:44):

Speaker 6 (29:03):
Now there's a lot of different shows if the Bengals
season continues like this basketball soon.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Seventeen days ago, the Reds lost a game to the
Mets on a Friday night where they left the bases
loaded after loading them with no outs in the bottom
of the ninth inning.
Speaker 10 (29:20):
That dropped them to six out of the last wildcard.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
Yeah, seventeen days later, sixteen days later, actually, they have
made up that entire deficit.
Speaker 10 (29:29):
A week ago, they.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Were coming off a miserable three days in Sacramento, losing
three straight to a bad As team, and I think
most people at that point, not for the first time
this year, rode off the Reds. And yet here they
are going into the final six games of the season,
work to do, and you know they they're gonna go
up against Paul Skeins on Wednesday. That is a Pirates
(29:54):
team that has good starting pitching. Playing the Brewers on
the road is gonna be hard. It always is. That said,
if I would have said a week ago the Reds
will go into the final six games in control of
their destiny, you would have said.
Speaker 6 (30:06):
What, no chance. But I think they learned something in
Sacramento from the A's. I think they learned that you
can indeed win by hitting home runs. That's how the
A's have won, and that's how the Reds have been
doing it. They've been doing it by great starting pitching,
which has been a constant all year, and they have
found ways to get guys hot at the right time.
(30:27):
Spencer Steer is that catalyst right now. Stevenson's played well
down the stretch. Ellie actually hit a home run for
the first time in which feels like months. Is months,
But the constant has been the pitching. And you said
with Austin before we came on today, it's felt like
six or seven times this year where they're getting ready
(30:49):
to be dealt the knockout blow, and somehow they make
it like the boxing match. They make it to the
end of the round, they get back to the corner,
and they somehow come out fighting. The next round. They've
done that so much this year. Pitching is a big
reason why, because pitching has kept them in so many
different games. Look, I know that Milwaukee has been a
(31:11):
house of horrors for this team. There is just a confidence.
It feels like they're playing with and we've talked about
Francona all year. This is when a guy like Terry
Francona pays off. He's familiar with this type of baseball.
He's familiar with this time of the year. I still
contest if they can find a way to sneak in.
(31:31):
I know if the playoffs started today, they'd go to
La Hunter Green Andrew Abbat Nicolodolo. I like my chances
with those guys on the mound any series. That's what
it's about. In the playoffs. You don't see many, you know,
eight to two games. It's pitching performances, and I like
who the Reds have up if you're going on what
they've done lately. Hunter Green has looked as good as
(31:55):
you can in a complete game, shutout one hitter. They're
just They're one of those teams I would not want
to sneak in because of their pitching.
Speaker 10 (32:04):
You got to win a best two out of three series.
It's what you play all year long.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
They've won best two out of three series against quote
superior competition. Now Tito has made the decision because a
lot of us wondered after Thursday. Okay, well you move
Hunter's day up having pitched Tuesday, so he could then
pitch in game one sixty two if necessary. They are
not gonna do that, so Brady Singer is gonna pitch tomorrow.
Brady Singer's era since mid July is two to one five.
(32:31):
It's been really, really good. Hunter Green is the better pitcher.
So the way this would shake out is if you
assume Game one sixty two means something. I guess even
if it doesn't, they're gonna have Hunter Green pitch on Wednesday,
and then he would be in line to pitch the
first game of the playoffs. Not using him in game
one sixty two puts it on Brady Singer, perhaps if
(32:53):
that game means something. Now, if you use Hunter Green
in game one sixty two, then he's not pitching in
any of those games. A middle likelihood against LA. What
do you make of the choice to not squeeze in
one more start for Hunter?
Speaker 6 (33:08):
I just with how he's battled through injuries. I want
to keep his routine as normal as possible, and I
don't disagree.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
I don't disagree because I've got a I've got a
degree of faith in Brady Singer that I think over
his last number of starts he has earned what I
would like is and this is going to be a
hard ask because of how good Paul Skins is. Could
they win Wednesday's game at a blowout so you can
pull Hunter.
Speaker 6 (33:36):
A little bit early and then you have them to get.
Speaker 10 (33:38):
Through a batter or two on Sunday if needed to.
Speaker 6 (33:41):
Be fair as well, the last couple outings they've limited
Paul Skiing's pitches. Yes, so he's been going three to
four innings, not deep in the game. So if I'm
looking ahead to Wednesday, whether the storm early and then
as soon as they go to the bullpen, get after
it and give yourself a chance.
Speaker 10 (34:00):
Is they're not going to ask Hunter to do anything
on three day's rest.
Speaker 2 (34:02):
But I mean one of the things that that Tito
has subjected himself to is, yeah, if it gets to
game one sixty two, which frankly you hope it doesn't,
I mean they could theoretically they could clinch a wild
card spot as soon as Thursday.
Speaker 6 (34:17):
I feel good too, because if you're the Cubs, you
need to play well going into the playoffs. You just
got swept in a four game set. Now you go
back home. Yeah, and here come the Mets. Like you,
if you're the Cubs, you can't lose seven straight, right like.
You need to get some wins put together going in.
So goat Cubs, go as I always say, oh all
the time, Goat Cubs. Go fly the w for the
(34:39):
next couple.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
I do think it's it's an interesting decision to not
have your best pitcher pitch Game one sixty two. But
if it works out, yeah, and now Hunter Green can
pitch Game one again, presumably on the road against La
What a billet to throw. What a bullet throw. But look, man,
we've all seen this is not a great team. We
know that, we know what their deficiency. They won two
(35:01):
games one nothing. I do wonder over these next six
are they gonna hit enough to get to the postseason.
But we've said it all year along, in spite of
their flaws. Every time you think the knockout blow has
been dealt, they get up. Yeah, including last week against
Saint Louis. They get beat eleven to six on Tuesday,
and it's like, all right, there it is, come back.
(35:23):
Brady Singer pitches well. The next day Spencer Steer has
a big game. Then they do what they did against
the Cubs. Nick Martinez yesterday with the seven consecutive hitters
he retired, comes up absolutely huge.
Speaker 10 (35:34):
A guy that we've talked all year long about what
his role in the team should be.
Speaker 6 (35:37):
That's the role. That's the role for Nick Martinez. And
I like the lineup better. They're actually using Will Benson.
South Stewart is now with the club, Chase Burns is
settling into the bullpen. You hope a little bit. Yeah,
Like I just like a lot of the pieces. I mean,
you and I have probably ten times made the comment
to each other on air, well, thanks for getting us
to the first day of training camp, we said it,
(35:57):
thanks to getting us to the start of the regular season,
thanks to getting us to the first Sunday. And they
just keep pushing and keep pushing, and here we are
twenty second of September, and that's what the city is
talking about. Fun If like yesterday I went I went
to Oakley Greens to watch the game right and by
the time halftime, everyone is now fixated and everyone is
(36:20):
on every pitch with the Reds, and it's like, man,
this is you forget. And then you see the clips
of playoff baseball in Cincinnati, you forget how quick it
can turn and how fun it is to be in
a meaningful playoff race.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
I just give me the team that no one will
give a chance to, even on the road, with their
starting pitchers and experience manager, and I think playing not unburdened.
But all right, we got here. The season's kind of
a success. Now let's go see what we can do
against the Dodger.
Speaker 6 (36:51):
It'd be awesome, yep.
Speaker 10 (36:52):
And the city, the city could badly use it. Die hard.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
Again, Man, the Reds have been an easy team to
punch at this season because of built in deficiencies. I
thought of you and I the first day of training camp.
They had lost a game in Washington the day before.
That kind of felt like it. And it's not only
are they in it, they control their own destiny.
Speaker 6 (37:23):
The craziest thing about it with this team this year,
you could tell me right now they're gonna sweep the Pirates,
and I could believe it, and you could tell me
they'll be swept by the Pirates.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
That's the thing I could believe it. Are they going
to hit enough this week?
Speaker 6 (37:35):
Right?
Speaker 2 (37:35):
Because they hit enough on Friday, they hit enough on
Saturday for the most part, they did not hit enough
on Thursday and Sunday.
Speaker 6 (37:44):
Yep, So we'll see, we'll see.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
But get me, get me tomorrow's game, and then give
me Hunter Green on Wednesday.
Speaker 6 (37:53):
It would just be nice to get tomorrow and have
the Mets slip, yes, and then you feel like, Okay,
now we got to little breathing right, and it's a
two game lead, you got a little breathing room, and
you got the tie breaker and you're not you know,
balls all all in on schemes, right. It would be
awesome to get that extra game of separation.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
And I the Brewers clinched yesterday because the Reds beat
the Cubs. They've got a first round by clinch, They're
still trying to clinch top record. I think because of
the off time between their end of the regular season
and their first playoff game. My guess is they play
their guys. Yes, for the most part, I want I
want to have a cushion going to Milwaukee yeah, I
(38:34):
don't flashback to nineteen ninety nine, right, go to Milwaukee
and lose two out of three, like I want a
cushion going to Milwaukee. We will see, But what a
surprising and pleasant turn of events. Let me also mention

Speaker 6 (41:38):
Bearcats.
Speaker 2 (41:38):
The Bearcats noon kick on Saturday against Kansas Jayhawks looked
really good against West Virginia on Saturday. It's a big
game and I want to spend some time on that
a little bit later on. Let's talk about Jake Browning
in particular. He was bad yesterday, and I thought he
was bad from his first throw, which was a ball
he throws no, a fan that he had to make
(42:00):
like the craziest adjustment of all time in hindsight. Is
it fair to say they should have gotten someone to
get them up to speed to play quarterback on short notice.
Speaker 6 (42:10):
Absolutely, because of this reason that we're talking about right now.
You go back to the first completion I highlighted on
social media today, His first pass attempt was a fail. Yes,
he's got a hot route. He points literally to the
guys to Mike and second, if these guys come, you're hot.
Kaseiki runs his route hot and he goes to the
complete opposite side of the field and those that do
(42:31):
it covered Jamar chasing the balls behind him. From there,
it never got any better. You want to talk about alarming.
Last year, Joe Burrow finished the season with nine interceptions
on six hundred and fifty two throws. That is an
interception rate of one point four percent of his dropbacks.
Jake Browning right now five interceptions on fifty nine throws.
He leads the NFL in interceptions. So for all of
(42:55):
this Jake Browning talk, it's one thing to be a backup.
You come in in your turn the ball over at
the clip you're turning it over. You cannot settle for that.
You cannot give that any more. Thought it should have
already been done in my opinion. And the other thought,
I was curious going into the game, how would Brian
(43:16):
Floores attack Jake Browning. He was really good against the
blitz when he came in the game before, through some
good passes, leading the team back fifty two offensive plays.
They only blitzed on twelve of them. It wasn't like
a high blitz percentage. They were struggling to protect, which
is a problem for Jake Browning because now there's seven
(43:37):
guys in coverage. That's harder to navigate, especially for a
backup quarterback. So by only committing four to the rush
and dropping seven, I think they're making life really hard
on Jake Browning. I just feel like it should have
already been done. You should haven't here even last week
when it happened, did Mike White and Sean Clifford move
the needle fow for many folks, No, it just didn't
(43:59):
feel like that added up to anything that they were doing.
The old line is not good enough right now, call
it what it is for a backup to thrive. Fifty
eight percent of his dropbacks he was pressured. That's not
good enough up front on the offensive line, and in turn,
it's not good enough, especially when you add that to
the worst running attack in football.
Speaker 10 (44:19):
Which we're gonna talk more about here in a second.
Speaker 2 (44:21):
I guess with Jake, I could handle the low floor
if I felt like the ceiling was high. Yeah, And
that's and you could say this about a lot of
backup quarterbacks.
Speaker 10 (44:31):
But there's the problem.
Speaker 2 (44:33):
There is why the suggestion that they're going to be
fine and they're still gonna make the postseason, which you
heard last week, it's why I don't. It's why it
doesn't work for me. Yeah, because he's gonna have clunkers.
His bad as an inexperienced backup, still relatively inexperienced, his
bad is worse than Joe Burrow's bad. His good will
(44:54):
never be as good. So, all right, yesterday was the clunker? Fine,
What is the best this case looked like for Jake?
Probably not great. And so that's that's why you can say, hey,
look yesterday, it was a lot of things beyond Jake
Browning's control. The offensive line wasn't great. They had guys
drop passes, Vikings made plays. That's a tough defense, tough
(45:17):
day at the office for Jake Browning. That's fine. Is
he going to be capable of winning them games?
Speaker 6 (45:22):
I don't think so, And so there's the issue. And
then we played at the start of the show that
Zach Taylor press conference and he was asked about t
Higgins andre Yochi Vash and Zach's answer, if you listened,
was while we were in a lot of twelve personnel,
which is fine, but then why did you sign T Higgins?
Like that's why I think so much with this team,
actions don't add up to what the play on the
(45:47):
field is telling you. We're gonna pay t Higgins a
lot of money, but we're not gonna utilize them because
we value twelve personnel. Like that was essentially Zax's reasoning. Yeah, well,
we didn't get a lot of targets for Tea and
not any for I think Yoshi got one catch on
the year. If the answer is well, we're just gonna
do a lot of twelve personnel I'm fine with that,
but then why did you pay T Higgins the money
(46:09):
you paid him? Those things like that doesn't add up,
so everything is backwards. I feel like with this offense
they want to run, they don't have an offensive line
built to run. They signed T Higgins, but now they
want to operate more on a twelve personnel, which means
less targets for T Higgins. I don't get any of that, right.
You got these two Mustang you got these horses on
(46:30):
the outside, T Higgins and Jamar Chase, and you're not
utilizing in as much because of twelve personnel.
Speaker 10 (46:38):
You know what we can throw out the window the
Browns game bad matchup?
Speaker 6 (46:43):
Well, no, Zach said they had three bad matchups.
Speaker 10 (46:46):
Bad matchup.
Speaker 6 (46:46):
All three of these teams have been good.
Speaker 10 (46:49):
When do the good matchups come?
Speaker 9 (46:51):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (46:52):
Not this week?
Speaker 12 (46:53):
Like?
Speaker 2 (46:53):
When when's the good matchup?
Speaker 7 (46:55):
Right?
Speaker 10 (46:55):
When's the good offensive matchup?
Speaker 2 (46:56):
Right? Right?
Speaker 12 (46:57):
Like?
Speaker 6 (46:58):
So I said that we've had tough matchup.
Speaker 2 (47:00):
So fine, but I make it about the the three
game body of work offensively with acknowledging that in the
middle of all that, a catastrophic injury to your starting quarterback,
one of the best in the NFL, Like, what should
I hang my hat on to feel better about their
offensive performances moving forward? When I look at the first
three games. Yeah, turns out that Browns game where you
(47:23):
had Joe Burrow wasn't just a bad matchup. It's maybe
just not a very good offense in spite of the weaponry. Yeah,
in spite of the continuity. Like, go back to that
Browns game here for a second, because here's what never
worked for me. It's a bad matchup because they have
sticky corners. Don't the Bengals have all world wide receivers.
Speaker 6 (47:43):
Yes, no, no team should be corner wise dominant.
Speaker 2 (47:47):
Granted that the Browns have good corners and played well
yesterday against the Green Bay Packers, but the backbone of
the Bengals, these two guys that you paid get totally
neutralized the Cleveland Browns. Yep, And nobody wanted to say
it because they won the game. But like, go back
to that Browns game where the entire offense operated inside
(48:09):
the numbers and it was, ah, you know, bad matchup. Okay, cool,
Wait a minute, but why couldn't they run the ball?
Speaker 1 (48:17):
Eh?
Speaker 2 (48:18):
You know they got that Miles Garrett KT like you
all right, second game against Jacksonville, all sorts of weirdness
to it. Right, Jamar was awesome, Jake Browning played Whatever
deficiencies there were in that game, Okay, I'll chalk it
up to just the difficulty of changing quarterbacks midway through.
But what could they not do in that game? Couldn't
(48:40):
run it? Is that also a bad matchup? And then yesterday,
whatever the hell that was yesterday?
Speaker 6 (48:45):
Do you hear many people around the NFL talk about
the Ruts defense of the Jacksonville Jaguars. No, Minnesota Vikings
went into yesterday giving up the most yardage on the
ground right through two games. So that doesn't work. Why
does it always take a bad performance for the next game?
You target Jamar Chase so much? Huh? Why hadn't he
targeted like that every game?
Speaker 2 (49:04):
Right?
Speaker 6 (49:05):
The best running play yesterday was the ball they handed
off to him on a jet suite. Huh? Did they
go back to that?
Speaker 2 (49:09):
No?
Speaker 6 (49:10):
Did they use that motion to maybe misdirect and give
one to Chase? No, Like, at the very least that
got you nine yards. Go back to that and fake
it to Jamar. Maybe you pull a linebacker or a
defensive end and give Chase Brown an actual running lane
to run in instead of him having to make someone
miss behind the line of scrimmage. The scheme and the
(49:30):
play calling is nowhere close, in my opinion, to matching
the talent that they have on the roster.
Speaker 2 (49:35):
You know, you talk about like schematic advantages. So what
what did everybody say leading up to the game yesterday? Boy,
it's a backup quarterback against a Brian Flora's defense.
Speaker 6 (49:45):
Oh yeah, just once.
Speaker 2 (49:47):
I want the Bengals to have a unit where you
identify it with the coordinator and go, you know what,
that guy's going to cook up something, either for a
backup or a starting quarterback.
Speaker 6 (49:57):
Why couldn't we do that? Right? Carson Wentz got the
Minnesota in August. They still don't have Jordan Addison, they
didn't have Aaron Jones. Carson Wentz does one thing very well?
Get the ball out under two point five seconds? Did
they at all? Ask Carson Wentz, you know what, show
me that you can make a throw over the top. Nah,
we'll back up Dink and duncas to death. We're good,
(50:20):
We're gonna We're gonna give no opposite And then well
Shamar was out. If that's your defense, that's it without
Shamar Stewart. Seven point three yards per carry for Jordan Mason.
Jordan Mason, and what Zach said it is, well, we
we love our linebacker depth, we love where we're out
at linebacker.
Speaker 10 (50:42):
Then they took Logan Wilson off the field for the snaps.
Speaker 6 (50:45):
Yesterday, Like make any of the game plan makes sense?
In what in what universe would a backup quarterback start
and a defense come out and say, we're just gonna
play back. You know why, because we want you to
get comfortable. We're not gonna stack the box. We're not
gonna try to take the running game away and make
you pass. You can run it, you can dink and dunk,
(51:06):
but be dang sure, you're not gonna beat us over
the top. That's what the gameplay felt like against the
guy who got there in August. But yes, so is
a Brian Flores defense tough. Yeah, they blitzed twelve times yesterday.
Speaker 2 (51:25):
Right, they weren't reinventing the wheel man, no, but so,
But like all week long, it's with that Brian Flora's defense.
Does anybody say, you know what the quarterbacks different? But
I'll tell you what that Zach Taylor offense. They're gonna
figure out way. He's gonna be creative and out scheming.
He just what wait, wait, you can't wait to see
what Zach has in his back pocket for Brian. Nobody
(51:45):
ever says that the.
Speaker 6 (51:46):
More I watched yesterday, the more I'm thinking to myself,
Joe hides so much like, yes, that is the obvious
tick away. And how many times Joe has to check
at the line of scrimmage. I wonder how many times
he's checking out of what's called Like, oh, okay, we
called that. I don't like the look. I'm gonna get
into this, and Doc just kind of goes with it
because that's Joe Burrow. Jake's not gonna do that, right,
(52:07):
you call it, Jake's gonna run it. And that's what
you got yesterday. Again, one game sample size. But if
Jacksonville was a bad matchup, if Minnesota is a bad matchup,
Denver's defense is a bad matchup, right, So you're not
in the National Football League going to get good match
(52:28):
You have to create your matchups.
Speaker 10 (52:29):
So let me ask you this again.
Speaker 2 (52:30):
I'll make it about the Browns game when they had
Burrow for all sixty minutes. Why are the Brown's not
a bad matchup for the Baltimore Ravens. Right, Lamar Jackson
ran for thirteen yards in that game. It's not like
he ran for a billion.
Speaker 6 (52:44):
Derek Henry didn't run for much.
Speaker 2 (52:45):
Right, So I hear Browns are a bad matchup. And
I know Jamar Chase is great, and I know T
higgins is really good, and I know Joe Burrow's good,
even though he wasn't great in Game one? All Right,
why is an matchup? Because this coaching staff can't figure
out a way to make it not a bad matchup,
I'll make it about that game. Yeah, you want to
(53:08):
say yesterday is not fair because it was Browning because
it's a backup cool Game one. When I hear Browns
are a bad matchup, what I think is the coaching
isn't good enough to make it a better matchup, because
it's not like you're playing with two schleps on the outside.
It's not like you had a rookie quarterback making his
first start. Again, I know, I'm talking about a game
(53:30):
that they won. But when I hear well, it's a
bad matchup, I go the the offensive coaching isn't good
enough to make it a good matchup. So then when
I give him a backup quarterback, then every game is
going to be a bad matchup. Right.
Speaker 6 (53:44):
Yeah, And years ago when Jake came in end of
the year, you had a pretty good feel of the
team going into that stretch and some matchups that the
teams you played weren't great, right, call it what it is. Yes, Yeah,
last year, while they started slow, you still had Joe Burrow,
so you still had hope throughout the year. My worry
is the one thing we've given Zach credit for all
(54:06):
along as culture. If this team, let's say they're seven
and a half point underdogs on Monday, Let's say they
get beat pretty bad, and let's say it's a similar
performance from Jamar and t. How long before they start
getting frustrated? How long before that body language changes? How
long before Chase Brown's body language changes? Right? How long
(54:29):
before everything that Zach's done so well starts to implode
because the team is not winning and guys aren't getting theirs.
That's the real point in the NFL. It's easy to
be like when you're winning, I'm a great teammate. As
long as we're winning, I'm good with this. Watch where
The dysfunction in the NFL historically starts when you're not
(54:50):
getting what you think you should and your team's losing,
right you just I said on the break, it's hard
to lose in the NFL by thirty eight.
Speaker 2 (55:00):
I mean, the fact that that was the most lopsided
defeating franchise history is illustrative of that.
Speaker 10 (55:06):
Because the Bengals for a large chunk of their history
have been terrible.
Speaker 6 (55:09):
How many guys you think on that team have ever
been beaten like that? Not many?
Speaker 2 (55:12):
Not many?
Speaker 6 (55:13):
And now you go into a beating like that, and
you're gonna come around and now you're this big underdog
in Denver. Then the Lions are coming in and then
you got to go to Green Bay.
Speaker 2 (55:23):
All bad matchups, right, Well, then then the Steelers and
then the Steelers historically matchup like it's not going to
get any easier.
Speaker 6 (55:32):
So unless you find a.
Speaker 2 (55:36):
Where's the good matchup? That's what show me on the schedule,
where where for this team is currently constructed?
Speaker 10 (55:43):
Where is the good matchup?
Speaker 2 (55:45):
And again, like nobody wanted to say this after the
Browns game because they won because their kicker, who may
makes the game winner yesterday's thunk.
Speaker 6 (55:52):
Right, but that game.
Speaker 2 (55:54):
I heard it five dozen times during the week, Browns
are just a bad matchup Browns and I, okay, Are
Jamar Chason T Higgins bad? Oh no, they're great?
Speaker 6 (56:03):
Okay?
Speaker 10 (56:03):
Is Joe Burrow bad?
Speaker 6 (56:04):
Oh no, He's awesome?
Speaker 2 (56:06):
Okay? So then it shouldn't be a bad matchup unless
you're coaching stinks?
Speaker 6 (56:10):
Yeah, right, And what I hated the most about the
Browns is their their corners talked oh yeah leading into
the game. Yeah. They they let him know what they
felt about it, and Jamar was kind of all right,
we'll see. Well, guess what they were right. They did nothing.
Bad matchup, bad matchup. But against against Jacksonville you target
(56:31):
him fifteen or sixteen times. It's crazy what happens. But
then you go right back away from it. No rhyme,
no reason, no rhythm, scheme, doesn't match. We're gonna still
be a run first team. And then again, the most
shocking thing about that press conference we played Zach Taylor
saying that we were going we came out in the
second half to put pressure on them. No, you didn't.
(56:52):
You ran the ball for minus two, you ran it again,
and then you got sacked on third down. And you
gave him a ten play touchdown drive. You rolled over
your team quit. That is a scary, scary thought.

You think he can instill in Mike White and Sean

Speaker 2 (59:51):
Yeah, that's nothing against Sean.
Speaker 6 (59:56):
No, it's really I like Sean, Yeah, Sew's just kids
I've ever met. But it's just like last week. It's
funny because I'm like, man, Kirk Cousins will be awesome, Man,
Jameis Winston will be awesome. And then I was like,
here's Mike White and Sean Clifford, and I was like, oh, okay.
Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
All right, I'll read for you what Dan Graziano of
ESPN wrote on that topic in a second Monday Night
Football Tonight Detroit's at Baltimore coverage at seven on ESPN

six on ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 10 (01:00:40):
Trying to pack the ballpark.
Speaker 6 (01:00:41):
Let's pack the park man do it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:45):
If you're wondering and you don't know. The Mets are
off today. They're in Chicago to start a series with
the Cubs. Arizona is also off. They begin a series
with the Dodgers. Giants and Cardinals play what we'll call
an elimination games. Okay, not that any of us are
really taking those teams seriously, but they do play. This evening,
Evander had three assists and FC Cincinnati's went on the
road on Saturday against the LA Galaxy, who he has
(01:01:07):
been named to the Team of the Match day for
the eleventh time this year.
Speaker 6 (01:01:11):
All and you see Kansas Saturday noon and the big
twelve opening games for the basketball season came out. Yeah,
really throwing you see some favors here, Because if I've
ever said anything, mo, you want to get Kelvin Samson
coach teams early?
Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
Oh no, doubt about it. How about right out of
the gate, Welcome to Big twelve play if you're wondering.
The UC game a week from Saturday at home is
a noon kickoff. We'll talk about the Bearcats coming up
here in just a bit. So Dan Graziano of ESPN
right say a column it's reaction, over reaction to a
(01:01:50):
bunch of different things happening around the NFL. One of
him is Daniel Jones could be an MVP candidate through
three games. That's a take that's out there interesting, and
he says that it's a reaction. One of them, though,
is the Bengals need to call the Falcons about Kirk
Cousins in italics right now, and he writes, not an
over reaction. Now, Kirk Cousins actually played yesterday. Yeah, they
(01:02:12):
had a miserable thirty zip loss to your Panthers.
Speaker 6 (01:02:15):
Crazy Carolina's not a great team. They won thirty to nothing,
but not a bad matchup. Bad match up, bad matchup
for the Falcons. By the way, you know many times
Andy spunted this year zero one. They did punt yesterday.
They did punt once yesterday. Man Luana Rumo's defense looks good.
Crazy though, with Daniel Jones, fresh start.
Speaker 2 (01:02:33):
Daniel coaching Daniel Jones a bad matchup to scheme all
terrible man, bad matchup.
Speaker 6 (01:02:37):
Yeah, anyway, Kurtin never running back in New York with him,
that's right now, he's got one.
Speaker 2 (01:02:42):
Kirk Cousins did come in and mop up duty for
Michael Pennix yesterday. Raheem Morris, the coach in Atlanta, says
Pennix is still the guy. So you can't go back
in time. But knowing what we know now, you've got.
Speaker 6 (01:02:57):
To at least call right, yes, Graziano. Thing should have
been not right now. Last week, Yes, when you and
I sat in Westchester and had the conversation of what
are you doing? Neither of us said you need to
go sign a guy and let them start against or
we didn't sign and say let him start at Minnesota.
He said, you got to get the guy in place
now so that if things go south for a week
(01:03:19):
or two, they're ready to take over. They didn't do that.
We had a list of ten quarterbacks we read through.
They didn't sign one of them. Now here we are
a week later. Browning leads the NFL and interceptions looks
inept right now to run this offense the way that
Zach Taylor is asking him to. By the way, no
running game at all. There are quarterbacks in this league
(01:03:43):
that have done more with much less weapon wise than
what the Bengals have. So, like we talked about ocs,
like what oc wouldn't want to come right? What quarterback
wouldn't want to come here and throw to Jamar Chase
and T Higgins. And if they're not in twelve personnel, YOCVA.
If they are in twelve personnel, maybe they can throw
it to get sick team. I don't know, but this
(01:04:05):
should have been done last week. And I don't think
Cousins has ever been more like plausible in my opinion.
To me, it was always Jamis Winston correct agreed, He's
he's in no man's land with New York.
Speaker 10 (01:04:16):
He's not the primary backup.
Speaker 6 (01:04:17):
He's not gonna be the backup. They're eventually gonna go
to Jackson Dart and then Russell's gonna be the backup.
They're not paying Russell to be the third string guy.
You could probably call New York right now and give
him a six round pick and get Jamis here. What
what would it do against you? But again it should
have already been done.
Speaker 2 (01:04:33):
So it's the ultimate. What do we always say about
this team, They're not proactive enough, they're reactive. So the
reactive thing would be Jake Browning really struggles for a
couple of games, then they go get somebody. The proactive
thing would be, Jake, you are the guy this week,
and if you play well this week, you're gonna be
the guy the week after that, and if you play
(01:04:53):
well that game, you're gonna.
Speaker 10 (01:04:54):
Be the guy after that. But Jake, sorry, like we
need an insurance policy.
Speaker 6 (01:04:58):
Which is fair. You're a backup if you do your
job right. If not, this is what it is.
Speaker 2 (01:05:04):
Right, you're the guy. If you're gonna look over your
shoulder to look over, you're the guy. But we need
someone in our back pocket. And look, the Falcons may go, Hey,
we like Kirk Cousins as our backup. He's experienced, he's
won a lot of games. We're not moving on from him.
But nothing against Sean Clifford, nothing against Mike White. I
wonder how aggressive they were in pursuing better options, and
(01:05:29):
I think none of us would be surprised if the
answer is not at all.
Speaker 6 (01:05:33):
Well, there were rumblings they reached out about Michael Milik Willis. Yeah,
more of a mobile quarterback. Yeah, probably what this offense
needs because they need a quarterback that can move around.
But what was the extent of that? Like, what was it? Hey,
if we call back, would you listen to the call?
That's fine? But did you then just say, Okay, well
(01:05:54):
I don't want to I don't want to get told
no again. Right, I'm not calling Atlanta. I'm not definitely
not calling New York. It's New York and win now mode.
No are the Bengals should be? Then go get a
quarterback to win now. So, like I read Rappaport yesterday
before the game, Joe Burrow can travel for two weeks.
If everything goes perfectly, maybe he can make it back
(01:06:14):
in December. Perfectly being the keyword. And if the team
is in position, well, the team's not gonna be in
position is currently constructed.
Speaker 2 (01:06:20):
Let's make it about Kirk Cousins here for a second,
because he's the guy that Dan has written about, and
Kirk has accomplished more.
Speaker 10 (01:06:25):
In the NFL than Jameis Winston has.
Speaker 6 (01:06:28):
What is a lot more? He's seen a lot more.
Speaker 2 (01:06:30):
What is the line that you'll go to in order
to acquire him, Like, what is what? Where is the
line that you'll go to to acquire Kirk Cousins Because
some are gonna say, well, yeah, I'd like to have them,
but I'm not going to overpay.
Speaker 10 (01:06:43):
And my take on that is I'll actually overpay a little.
Speaker 2 (01:06:46):
Yes, because you're two and one, because I think you
have a better offensive team than they showed yesterday, and
because I still think there's value in making something of
the season. And who knows, Joe Burrow may come back.
So if you want Kirk Cousins, you're probably gonna have
to overpay. Fine, what are you willing to do together?
Whatever it takes, whatever it takes. Look, call it what
(01:07:08):
it is. Dolphins aren't going anywhere this year, Right, Jets
aren't going anywhere this year? Right, Bills are gonna run
away with that division? Yes, Chargers already three to zero
in their own division. Kansas City has flaws, Denver has flaws.
I think the Colts now run away.
Speaker 6 (01:07:21):
With their division.
Speaker 2 (01:07:22):
Feels like it.
Speaker 6 (01:07:23):
I don't know who Jacksonville, you already have a heads
up win as bad as it's been, and felt you
have some good wins.
Speaker 2 (01:07:30):
I don't think Pittsburgh's very good.
Speaker 6 (01:07:31):
No, you have an AFC North Road win and you
have a win against Jacksonville in the AFC. And that's
what made like. That's why I said last week, because
you could have gotten a guy ready if you signed
him last week to go on Monday if you needed to,
because this game becomes huge. Denver's one and two, that's
gonna be a team you're probably lying with in the AFC.
(01:07:53):
If you're talking about a wild card and getting Joe
Burrow back, that makes that a must win games. So yes,
I'm more than willing to over I got Hendrickson on
a one year deal. I got Jamar and t inked
up for the future. I like early returns on Shamar
Stewart and Demetrius Knightham what I got in the draft.
And let's not act like we're tied to the draft anyway.
Is Jermaine Burtner, McKinley, Jackson any sign closer of dressing
(01:08:16):
on a Sunday?
Speaker 2 (01:08:17):
No?
Speaker 6 (01:08:18):
Okay, So what are we holding on to If Kirk
Cousins gives me an opportunity to stay afloat and stay
in playoff contention and possibly get Joe Burrow back at
the end of the year. Whatever it takes, I'm doing it.
Speaker 2 (01:08:30):
Let me ask you a question. This is maybe a
stupid one. This is a long week of prep for
the Bengals. They play on Monday. Two three years ago,
I watched a Thursday night football game where Baker Mayfield
joined the Rams on Tuesday night and then walks into
a game against the Raiders and helps deliver a victory.
Forty eight hours later. Baker Mayfield has resuscitated his career.
(01:08:54):
He is now a bona fide franchise quarterback. And I
love the shade that he threw at Steve Wilks. As
after that Buccaneers went over the Jets. You did that
with an elite head coach and Sean McVay. You got
a guy ready to go to help the offense function.
Not like he scored fifty points in that game. He
scored seventeen, but he won you a game on short notice.
Speaker 6 (01:09:16):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:09:17):
Could you say to the Atlanta Falcons, here's what we'll
give you for Kirk Cousins. Get in here to Cincinnati
and starting tomorrow, get him ready to play. Yeah, for
a guy with his experience has seen everything in the NFL,
and put him in a position to help the offense
function on Monday night.
Speaker 6 (01:09:35):
Well, that's the thing too. He wouldn't be going into
something where he's never seen things before. He's seen every defense.
Speaker 2 (01:09:41):
Possible in the league for over a decade.
Speaker 6 (01:09:43):
And I think there's something to be said about simplifying
some things if you're Zach Taylor and just sticking to
what works best. Uh huh, and that is Jamar and
t And I know Kirk Cousins can find out how
to get the ball to them, much like he's done
to get the ball to Justin Jefferson when his time
with the Minnesota Vikings. So it's a week, you get
an extra day of preparation, you're off tomorrow. There is
(01:10:05):
no chance I am not scouring the phone lines for
Cousins or Winston or anyone else to get them in
here asap and say. Because what Zach's message last week
was what what did you have to say for the
locker room? He said nothing. Everyone's already bought in. Clearly
they're not.
Speaker 2 (01:10:22):
They're not.
Speaker 6 (01:10:23):
You can watch the game and if you take one
thing away, there's not a lot of belief in Jake
Browning right now. What would it do for the locker room.
If you brought in a guy like that, I'm sitting
up now who WHOA And now wait we got who
So we're serious about this.
Speaker 2 (01:10:38):
And to me, like Kirk Cousins, say what you want
about his career, Like I watched that show Quarterback, and to.
Speaker 10 (01:10:45):
Me, he was the most interesting guy. He lost his
job on the series and you could tell it bothered.
Speaker 2 (01:10:50):
I think he handled it professionally, certainly looked like he did,
but like you could tell it bothers that dude. All right, Kirk,
here's your shot. You're gonna be the guy for the
next three months, maybe longer. You got some dudes to
throw to. If the answer to that is you can't
do that because it's too short notice, why could Sean
McVeigh do it?
Speaker 6 (01:11:09):
Correct?
Speaker 10 (01:11:09):
Is it because Zach Taylor can't The answer is yes,
then you've got the wrong guy.
Speaker 6 (01:11:13):
Milik Willis did it with Lafleur Uh huh, Yes, Jordan
Love got hurt right right. If you believe O'Connell did
it with a quarterback recently in the last couple of
years as well.
Speaker 10 (01:11:22):
If you can't.
Speaker 2 (01:11:23):
If the answer is we can't do that because they
can't get the experienced quarterback ready. Then you have said
everything that I need to hear about the head coach correct.
Sean McVay could do it. Baker Mayfield was claimed off
waivers on Tuesday, played on Thursday again, didn't read, write
the record books, help win the game. So the answer
is we can't do that because there's not enough time
to get him ready. Then you have the wrong coach.
Speaker 6 (01:11:45):
You could get him in here by Tomorrow, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
five days of full preparation. I mean that's more than
what a guy like Kirk Cousins would need right now. Again,
if it's a guy with less experience, you probably need
a little more build up time. If it was a
Malik Willis, probably need a little more. But come on,
it's a guy who's seen everything like Cousins has.
Speaker 12 (01:12:09):
It.
Speaker 6 (01:12:10):
It would change the narrative and send a different message
around the city. Instead, nothing happens.
Speaker 2 (01:12:17):
Kirk Cousins has played in one hundred and sixty five
NFL games. He could learn that offense in six days.
Speaker 6 (01:12:25):
YEP.
Speaker 2 (01:12:26):

Speaker 12 (01:12:34):

up from Dana Avenue. Not as bad, maybe a minute.
We're two worth of delays right now and eastbound two
seventy five disabled vehicle block in the right lane at
Springfield Pike on that ezelic with traffic from the Derby.

The bud Light five o'clock Happy Hour, Toni and Moro
Football Show on ESPN fifteen thirty. We are broadcasting and
having fun this afternoon here at Twin Peaks in Florence.
We are here till six o'clock. The staff at Twin
Peaks has been very accommodating to us. Twin Peaks this
is the sixth year where they've been hosting the Tony
and Mo Football Show, and a very easy location to
(01:14:00):
get to. Right off I seventy five, you can get
off at the Turfway Road exit and you are like
like ninety seconds away. The food is awesome, the beer
is cold, the staff is great. TV's all over the place.
You can watch a good Monday night football game. Channe
this one, Lions and Ravens. Let's be fun tonight. And uh,
as you think ahead to all the Reds playoff baseball,
(01:14:21):
you're gonna be watching starting next week. I'm I'm convinced
they're gonna make it like I'm in on this. By
the way, minus odds for the first time all year odds.
Speaker 6 (01:14:32):
On favorite like the Pirates and the Brewery.
Speaker 2 (01:14:35):
I certainly acknowledge the difficulty of what they have in
front of them, and I don't want to go to
Milwaukee without a little bit of a cushion. But I
nothing has been able to kill this team.
Speaker 6 (01:14:47):
This year.
Speaker 2 (01:14:48):
Yeah, the starting pitching has been terrific. The Mets have
been in free fall. The Diamondbacks play a tough schedule.
Diamond Backs had the Dodgers and the Padres left. Yes, so,
and the Mets have Chicago and then Marlins. You've won
nine out of ten who have been playing Crossome, actually
only four pack. Yeah, they could pass the Mets, probably
(01:15:09):
run out of time, But yeah, I believe, and I
if I'm wrong about this, God knows it will not
be the first time. I believe the Reds will be
playing next Tuesday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers, and
that our guy Mike is going to want to make
all sorts of wagers.
Speaker 6 (01:15:25):
But if that's the case and the Bengals play Monday Night,
you imagine the Tony and Mo Football show from.
Speaker 2 (01:15:32):
Here next week, next Tuesday, next Tuesday Night.
Speaker 6 (01:15:35):
One send me up. How the Bengals turned back the
clock and they dominated at Denver And now we get
ready for the Reds to go dominate the Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (01:15:47):
You know what do we always say about the Reds, like,
you know, it just get us to football season, But
the Bengals could just get us to the baseball playoffs.
Speaker 6 (01:15:53):
Get us to the playoffs. You know what, I told
you this over the break. It drives me nuts. I
got now five different text messages over the last break
because last segment that we were on we talked about
Kirk Cousins and the Bengals should make the call and
they already shouldn't go get him, And five people text
me and said, the Bengals would never do that. Don't
(01:16:15):
even talk about it. Why do you bring it up?
But they're not wrong. But that's the point. The point
is it's not something the Bengals would ever do. But
we're in a situation that you're not in you Wan
all in On, Trey Hendrickson and Jamar Chason t Higgins.
Your super Bowl window is shrinking every year. I don't
care if it's how you operate in the past or not.
(01:16:35):
Things change, Go do it now. So the way of
thinking of well, that's just not who they are driven
drive drives me out of my who they are.
Speaker 2 (01:16:45):
Let's roll through the reasons why they wouldn't do it. Okay,
you wouldn't do it if you were in love with
your current quarterback situation. How on earth could you watch
Jake Browning play either of these last two games and go,
you know what, Eh, We're good. We would rather have
him instead of asking about the availability of a guy
(01:17:07):
who has made one hundred and sixty five career appearances
it has played in the postseason, has had some very
good statistical years by all accounts, as a wonderful teammate.
You're looking so so reason to oppose inquiring about Kirk Cousins.
Number one is you love the quarterback situation you have
(01:17:28):
right now. That cannot be the case, correct correct. Reason
Number two would be, you know what, our coaches can't
get him up to speed. You mean to tell me
that your seventh year NFL head coach can't take a
guy like Kirk Cousins, renowned for work ethic, renowned for
(01:17:49):
wanting another opportunity to show what he can do in
this league, a player of his experience been in the
NFL since twenty twelve. Your coaching staff can't get him
up to speed and tell him what the play calls
are to throw the ball to Jamar Chase and t Higgins.
Is that the reason? Because then you have the wrong coaches.
What are the other reasons you don't want to give
(01:18:10):
up the draft capitol Huh. You don't want to give
up draft capital in order to keep your team afloat
and give it a chance, either if Joe Burrow can
come back or even if he can't.
Speaker 6 (01:18:20):
Yeah, that draft.
Speaker 2 (01:18:21):
Capital is not worth help at the most important position
in all of sports.
Speaker 6 (01:18:25):
And draft capitol, which call what it is. They haven't
used properly in the last couple Their last year's third
and fourth round pick are not going to be active
anytime soon. No, McKinley, Jackson and Jermain Burden.
Speaker 10 (01:18:35):
So what's the reason why, what's the reason why the
Bengals go? Now, we're good.
Speaker 6 (01:18:40):
I'll take you one further. You're not going three right
right now?
Speaker 2 (01:18:43):
Right?
Speaker 6 (01:18:43):
Yes, there are sixteen teams in the AFC, only six
have a winning record, right, and I get it's only
week three, right, but who are you competing against right now?
Buffalo will run away with the East. Indy I think
is going to win the South. Houston's yet to win
a game, Jacksonville, you have a heads up win already.
(01:19:03):
Chargers have beaten everyone in the division. Now you get
to go play Denver. Like, it's not like these teams
are like, we're gonna run away with this thing. You
still got some time here, you still got a chance here.
Like so you're you're still alive. It's not, you know,
week ten, you're already on the outside looking into the playoffs.
(01:19:23):
It's early enough in the season and other teams have
lost that you're competitive now.
Speaker 2 (01:19:29):
Kirk Cousins is making twenty seven and a half million
dollars financially. Are there reasons why you can't trade for
Kirk Cousins?
Speaker 6 (01:19:40):
Could be, but again that's where you got to get creative,
you know. Or is Atlanta willing to take on I mean,
right now, Atlanta's willing to pay him all that money
to have him sit as a backup. Would they be
willing to pay a chunk of that and get something
in return and then the Bengals take on whatever rest
that may be. I'm sure there are ways that you
(01:20:02):
can add in value to Atlanta to say, yeah, well
we'll continue to pay X amount of dollars here. But again,
what is hurt Mo at all this and just calling
and asking they're kicking the tires other than it's just
not what the Bengals do. It's the worst answer it
is in sports that anyone can give you about an
(01:20:22):
organization it is. It's not who they are, it's not
what they do.
Speaker 2 (01:20:25):
It is. I mean, it's maddening. But unfortunately, if you
say that, or if you think that you're not wrong, right,
prove me otherwise.
Speaker 6 (01:20:36):
That's the thing, right, that's the thing. All of that
thought comes from somewhere years and years of the same thing.
And again, I think I think of locker rooms that
were I was a part of. Think about if you're
in a locker room and the morale is just a
little bit low and you're dejected, and then it's like, wait,
we did what? Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:20:55):
So the part with Kirk Cousins specifically that I would
wonder about it is how creative could the Bengals and
Falcons get Like, if you're gonna ask Atlanta to eat
more of that contract, then you're gonna.
Speaker 6 (01:21:06):
Have to give them more.
Speaker 2 (01:21:08):
So there's possibly the reason why it can't get done.
But again, like the reporting out of Atlanta is that
there have been no calls made to the Falcons by
the Bengals or anybody else teams looking for a quarterback, right,
nobody has made a call. I don't understand how you
(01:21:30):
don't at least pick up the phone. Hey, what would
it take. What's your interest level?
Speaker 6 (01:21:36):
What could we do?
Speaker 10 (01:21:38):
And if at the end of that phone call it's
look from our end, it's a non starter.
Speaker 6 (01:21:43):
Okay. What if let me ask you a out of
other teams you view as potential contenders in the AFC,
if they lost their quarterback, would they make the call?
I would say more than not, what at least call.
Speaker 2 (01:21:54):
I would be willing to bet that if tonight something
happened to Lamar Jackson, that they would they would make
the phone call.
Speaker 6 (01:22:01):
Correct, I mean I something in Buffalo, if something in
Denver happened to bow next, I would be willing to
bet that they are. They see themselves in a mode
the Chargers, if if Herbert were to miss some time,
I would be willing to say that they'd be like, well,
we're three and oh yeah, we can't just ride this out.
Let's let's let's go. Especially if there's a chance that
Burrow comes back in place. There is a chance that
(01:22:24):
you get him back. I just the pros outweigh the
cons so much for me. But it's not even that,
it's the it's the amount of the messaging of It's
just not who they are, so stop talking about it.
But that's why you should talk about right. Change it, right,
change it.
Speaker 2 (01:22:41):
That's why you should talk about right.
Speaker 6 (01:22:44):
Like the the addition of Mike White and Sean Clifford.
What did that accomplish last week?
Speaker 10 (01:22:48):
Bodies?
Speaker 6 (01:22:48):
It's just bodies. Like I was sold because Mike White
threw for four hundred against you, Like, are you going
to sell me that the rest of his career has
him worthy that he's going to jump into the number
two role in a something happened to Jake. We're gonna
talk about Mike White leading this team.
Speaker 10 (01:23:04):
I guess for me.
Speaker 2 (01:23:05):
And look, their issues yesterday were not limited to Jake Browning.
We'll talk more about the running game. They had all
the turnovers, The defense didn't look ready to play at
the beginning of the game. There's lots there. I do
not know how you could watch Jake Browning play yesterday
and arrive at the conclusion that they're fine. Yeah, that's
(01:23:25):
a position they do not need to address.
Speaker 6 (01:23:28):
They lose thirty five thirty one different. Browning plays good,
it's different. Defense gives up some fluke stuff. We're talking
about man. Defense needs to be better, Like, that's not
what we're talking about. We're talking about Browning, who leads
the NFL in interceptions and he's played how many quarters? Six? Yeah,
six and a half. Right, Okay, that's not acceptable.
Speaker 2 (01:23:50):
Kirk Kirk Cousins has played at a level throughout his
career that Jake Browning would be lucky to play at. Right.
I mean, he's just he has been over the course
of his career a better quarterback. And look, maybe he's
not right. But the idea that you just you're good
with Jake, I I have an issue with that.
Speaker 6 (01:24:10):
And what it turns into is all of a sudden,
now the goal post gets moved for the defense because
all offseason we said man.
Speaker 2 (01:24:17):
League average, but don't breakage.
Speaker 6 (01:24:20):
And that's what they did yesterday. Right Like Carson wentz
through for what one seventy justin Jefferson had seventy five
receiving yards. Sign me up, sign me up before the
game for that. They turn they turned Jacksonville over. They
got enough opportunities for the offense. They got the stops
against Cleveland, albeit some stuff handed to him.
Speaker 10 (01:24:39):
We all we had.
Speaker 6 (01:24:40):
The defense has done what we asked them to do.
They've not been good, but they've not been worse than
the NFL. Now all of a sudden, that goal post
has to be moved. Oh, now we need the defense
to do more for us. They weren't built that way,
just like the offensive line one built for the run.
Those are our major issues now that they have to
address going forward.
Speaker 2 (01:24:58):
All right, we'll talk about the run game, the offensive line,
and more when we come back. Twin Peaks in Florence

Speaker 9 (01:25:46):
This report is Football in the NATI, brought to you
in part by Postman Law and Vice Skyline Chile on
ESPN fifteen thirty to the official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 2 (01:26:00):
Football show on ESPN fifteen thirty. We are broadcasting from
Twin Peaks in Florence. Day after the Bengals got hammered
by the Minnesota Vikings. I was a little surprised that
the most lopsided loss of franchise history was fewer than
forty points.
Speaker 6 (01:26:15):
Yeah, it felt like about seventy Yesterday.
Speaker 2 (01:26:19):
I watched a lot of really bad teams playing the
nineteen nineties boy, and none of them lost by more
than thirty eight.
Speaker 6 (01:26:25):
You want to talk by an insult injury, I bet
him plus thirty one and a half. At the half
you text it because I'm just thinking, like, they're gonna fight,
They're gonna battle. It can't be any worse than what
we just saw. Minnesota's gonna take their foot off the gas.
And then it was three and out Minnesota touchdown, and
I was like, man, I should have waited to jump
on a higher line.
Speaker 2 (01:26:43):
We know, I mean the loss stunk. Arren Bland, our producer,
oh Man, huge Vikings fan. We made a Wings bet.
Oh so now on Wednesday, I have to bring him wings.
Speaker 6 (01:26:53):
So Terren's been cashing in then because him and I
bet on the Bowling Green game, which U see didn't
cover right. He got skyline out of that.
Speaker 2 (01:26:59):
Yeah, and he gave me points yesterday because the Bengals
were dogs. He gave me two and a half and
closed three. I gotta buy him wings. They haven't been
able to run the ball effectively all season. They haven't
been able to consistently run the ball effectively for a
while now.
Speaker 10 (01:27:18):
On this team this year. The personnel of the offensive
line isn't going to change.
Speaker 2 (01:27:24):
These guys are not, especially the veteran players that they're
not guys who historically have been good run blockers. They're capable,
or at least have been capable pass blockers. Personnel is
not going to change. The running back isn't going to change.
The makeup of the team isn't going to change. So
Zach Taylor has tried different running schemes over the time
(01:27:46):
he's been the Bengals head coach on.
Speaker 10 (01:27:47):
Primary play caller.
Speaker 2 (01:27:48):
So I don't know what you throw at the board
next to try to stick, But using what they have
and knowing what we know, how do they make the offense,
the ground game work more effectively.
Speaker 6 (01:28:00):
I would start in a meeting probably today and just
with the coaches said, does anyone have any ideas that
would be my start? Does anyone else have an idea
of what we can do other than just showing the defense,
here's what's gonna come. They don't hide anything, They don't
run misdirections. They don't use a ton of motion and
jet sweep. Watch NFL games. Watch the Ravens tonight. How
many times they'll time the snap with the jet motion huh,
(01:28:22):
just to play fake that and to make that end
hold a half second longer. Just little stuff like that.
They don't do the intricate scheming things. And as you mentioned,
the way the line has been built, it's disaster right now.
Fairchild and Mims. All we talked about was them in
college as pass protectors. Orlando Brown as a pass protector,
(01:28:45):
Dalton Reisner pass protector, terrible run blocker, but he can
protect a quarterback. Ted Carriss, who just got a pay raise.
Thirty fifth out of thirty five NFL centers and pass
pressures given up and the fourth lowest run blocking grip
in the NFL from a center. They don't have an
offensive lineman that's a run blocker, So you've lost your
(01:29:07):
quarterback who you've built the offensive line to protect. Now
you have to try to establish a run game with
a running group up front that can't run block. It
has to be scheme, it has to be misdirection. It
has to be the passing game being an extension of
the running game, meaning can you can you find three
yard easy completions four yard completions that get you on
(01:29:29):
schedule instead of It feels like to me they're they're
the worst team in the NFL at second and long
and you know what's coming right after that. They don't
keep you on your toes at all. Like you watch
some of the elite offense in the NFL. You can
watch as much. You don't know what's coming. I feel
like I do with the Bengals. That's sad. So the
personnel is not going to help you. It's got to
(01:29:51):
be scheme and technique, and they've not shown the ability
to do that. They've changed offensive line coaches multiple times.
They've they've they've changed place Brian Callahan's the Tennessee Titans
head coach. New ones come in. They can't run the ball.
Speaker 2 (01:30:06):
Is Chase Brown. Do we overrate his ability as a rusher?
We talk a lot about how they can use him
in the passing game. Paul Danner Junior this summer wrote
a great piece about how he's he's learned more about
route running and you know he's he wants they want
to expand what he can do in the passing game.
Speaker 6 (01:30:26):
But do.
Speaker 2 (01:30:28):
Do we here overrate his ability as a rusher, as
a a running back taking handoffs and getting yardage.
Speaker 6 (01:30:41):
It's hard because there's part of me that looks at
the stats and how many I mean, he's making a
ton of people miss, which shows me that he's elusive
enough if he ever gets a chance in open field, right,
But I also don't know if there's an element when
he does get hit about getting those extra yards. Like
I watched last night, say what you want cams Katabom,
(01:31:05):
guy always falls forward. He's not gonna go down. And
I'm not saying that Chase Brown goes down easy. I'm
just saying you don't see the pocket or the line
moving much after he gets hit. Great at making someone miss,
but once that contact is made, not a lot is
happening after that. Whereas you watch the Jonathan Taylor highlight
tape right now, or what Scataboo did last night, or
(01:31:26):
these other running backs that are more bruisers that wears
on a defensive line. I don't think Chase Brown gives
you that runs hard, makes guys miss, hits the hole,
but doesn't offer much once that contact is made. But
I thought he was going to be so much more
dynamic for them this year. But I thought that because
I thought they were going to correctly utilize Jamar, Chase
(01:31:49):
t Higgins, Yosi Vash two tight end sets. And they're
not doing that again, burrows out. That doesn't help. The
offensive line can't protect at all. That doesn't help because
now teams know you're gonna, like if you're Denver, you
know right now when you're meeting today that one of
the only things they can do is try to get
the run game going to help, so you already know
(01:32:10):
what you're trying to stop. But you watch every other team.
He said, we're not gonna blitz, right, we don't need
to blitz. We'll rush for like every other team and
dominate this because they're not good run blockers. That just
makes it very hard for any quarterback. Let alone a
backup quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:32:25):
It's easy to say when you have Derrick Henry and
Lamar Jackson, or you have Sakuon Barkley. But I watched
the way Philadelphia and Baltimore execute their running games, and
it just looks It looks organized, it looks well coached.
Speaker 6 (01:32:43):
And by the way, a lot of it's at a gun,
a lot of it is out of gun.
Speaker 2 (01:32:46):
It it's not just the back taking the ball and
looking for a hole like you can as the plays unfold.
It's you're probably better at describing this than I am.
As the plays unfold like you can. You can see
what it's been designed to do. You could see where
who's supposed to block who. You can't see this before this,
not necessarily, but it just looks so well constructed and
(01:33:10):
well executed.
Speaker 10 (01:33:11):
Then I watched the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (01:33:13):
Yeah, and what they're doing in the run game, it's
like they're playing this sounds cliche, it's like they're playing
a different sport.
Speaker 6 (01:33:19):
Yeah. And what's always frustrating about the Bengals. More often
than not, you got to keep two high safeties back right,
so you're always facing a favorable box. So, in my opinion,
something as little as a jet motion that holds that
defensive end. Now the box is even more in your favor.
You know, let the quarterback pull it once or twice.
(01:33:40):
Now you hold the opposite defensive end. Right, That's why
these guys are so good. Lamar watch tonight. They'll send
Zay flowers in motion. Zay's speed will hold one defensive end,
the threat of Lamar pulling it will hold the other
defensive end, and all of a sudden you're worried about
two or three guys. The numbers in the space just
makes so much more sense. Everything with the Bengals just
(01:34:00):
feels congested. Yeah, it just doesn't feel clean. It doesn't
feel like there's a rhyme or reason. And then boom,
next thing, you know, the handoff of that jet suite,
right next thing, you know, they faked the jets suite,
faked the running back, and now they dropped back and
hit a tight end down the middle. Right, It's like
the Bengals don't do anything to like build off of
one play to the other. And they showed once yesterday
(01:34:20):
Jamar Chase gave it to him nine yards. They showed
nothing else off that. Right, he was your most successful run.
Speaker 2 (01:34:28):
I feel like, and I could say this about Indianapolis
right now, I feel like when I watch Philadelphia, Seguon
Barkley has his choice of holes, right, it's up to him. Okay,
I can go here and then let me see where
the linebacker is or where the safety is, or I
could go here and he's gonna make a choice. It
(01:34:49):
feels like with the Bengals, the way they block it,
whether it's Chase Brown or one of the other running backs,
there's never a choice to make correct. Ball's gonna go
here and there's gonna be a guy there because they
didn't block.
Speaker 6 (01:34:58):
And if you look at again, more successful teams right now,
the Buffalo Bills. Yeah, Josh Allen's MVP last year, James
Cook's been their MVP this year. But it's the way
in which they utilize them that is so different than
anyone else. That they're so much more advanced from a
rushing statistic because of spacing, because of scheme, because of motion,
(01:35:22):
because of formations, personnel groupings, and it just feels basic
when the Bengals run, right, Yeah, it's a basic look
with bad run blockers. Yeah, that can't work, right, So
something's got to give.
Speaker 10 (01:35:38):
We have to get to a break. That's what's going
to give for us.

They did an MRI, no real damage. They have not

Joe Burrow was in the locker room today. He ain't

Monday night. Football coverage starts at seven o'clock after the
Mark Stoops radio show Off night for the Reds, they
start their final home series until the playoffs tomorrow, first
of three against the Pirates. Reds are offering eight dollars
tickets three three, two one night all week, all week
long at gabp Man. Mets are also idle tonight. They're
(01:37:38):
in Chicago to take on the Cubs tomorrow evening, and
the Dbacks, who are a game back, have the LA Dodgers.
A three game series starts tomorrow night. Evander named to
a Team of the Match day for his three assists
performance in FC Cincinnati's win over LA on Saturday night
and off weekend for the Bearcats. I think this game
against Kansas is enormous. Jayhawks took uh Rich rod Rich
(01:38:02):
Rod in West Virginia to the woodshed. You win this one,
I think you're gonna feel okay about coming home for
the next two. You lose this one, it gets positioned
as maybe the best team they play comes to the
Pert Stadium a week from Saturday.
Speaker 6 (01:38:13):
I don't know what to feel about them, because I
hate how they went into the bye week, not with
the win but the opponent. I just don't know how
much you can get from that Northwestern State game. And
so you have a Bowling Green game, which I think
left a lot to be desired, Nebraska left a lot
to be desired, Northwestern State who has no business playing
(01:38:35):
college football teams, and then a bye I don't know
who the team is yet. Yeah, I've not seen it
consistently enough yet. And you're right, it just feels like
Kansas coming into this after playing a big twelve game.
It's just a it gets them more ready than I
think where UC is. And maybe we're wrong. Maybe the
(01:38:57):
time off helps this team but normally when you see
time off, it takes a way to get going. I
don't think you can start slow against.
Speaker 10 (01:39:04):
Kansas eleven am local time kickoff eleven am.
Speaker 6 (01:39:07):
Corleone is still questionable. I think it's just there's a
lot of what ifs in this game. But if they
want to be if we're gonna take them seriously as
a Big twelve contender or a team that is going
to take a step forward for Scott Sadderfield, this is
the type of game you have to win.
Speaker 10 (01:39:22):
I could not agree anymore.
Speaker 2 (01:39:24):
By the way, the next home game for UC is
going to be a week from Saturday. That's Iowa State.
That was announced as a noon kickoff today. Early on
Saturday afternoon, I sat down to watch Wisconsin play Maryland.
I was surprised Luke Fickle wasn't fired at halftime.
Speaker 6 (01:39:40):
Yeah, that was brutal. I mean they were a considerable
favorite at home. Yeah, it's twenty nothing. At halftime, I
started looking at their schedule. How do they get the
SEC because.
Speaker 2 (01:39:53):
They still have to go to Michigan, they still have
to play Ohio State, they have to go to Oregon Indiana.
Speaker 10 (01:39:59):
By the way, with awesome on Saturday.
Speaker 6 (01:40:01):
Is Illinois, fraudulent.
Speaker 10 (01:40:05):
You know, there's room for multiple truths. I'll say both.
Speaker 2 (01:40:07):
But I you surprised me with the ease with which
what they won that game, and I think it surprised
a lot of people. They hate him up there, yep,
Like if if you read or follow I read the
Milwaukee Papers because I read about the National League Central teams,
they hate him up there. I have foot friends who
do sports talk radio up there. They despise him up
(01:40:31):
there and did coming into this season. This isn't just
because they lost to Alabama the way they did. It's
not just because they lost to Maryland, like they've been
out on that dude for a while.
Speaker 6 (01:40:41):
If there's so much about Fickle that I loved, and
there's so much as I've watched his career continue that
I'm like, how much was his greatness? How much was
having Marcus Freeman and Mike Denbrock as EUROC and DC.
And again that's to his credit because he got him
(01:41:01):
to be there. Sure, but you think of that, I mean,
those are two really good coordinators are now doing it
at a much higher level. You know, Notre Dame is
now coached by Marcus Freeman, Den Brock's a very successful
offensive coordinator. I wonder since he started losing that core,
his teams have started to slide a little bit as well.
I Uh, I don't know. I mean, what's next for
(01:41:23):
Luke Fickle? I have no remote idea, Like if you
get fired from Wisconsin, his buyouts I think is still
forty mil. Yeah, so I guess I know I know
what would be next for me. I guess that's what's
nice spending my forty mil. Yep, unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (01:41:39):
Uh that is that is not even one of those
where you're like, you know what, everybody knew that wasn't
gonna work. Like he was the guy.
Speaker 6 (01:41:47):
Yep, he was.
Speaker 2 (01:41:48):
I mean it was a hot com was a cool
because all you know, they got the guy that would
have gone to Notre Dame. And I mean it was
and I root for him, Like I'm not bitter a
UC fan who hopes that he fails. But I watched
that game on Saturday, and I'm like, I'm not sure
my guys is gonna come out for the second half.
Speaker 6 (01:42:04):
No, oh man, he looks like he's aged a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:42:07):
He does.
Speaker 6 (01:42:10):
They do not like it is a It is a
good college football week. Coming up though, Oregon, Penn State, Alabama, Georgia, LSU,
Old Miss, Cincinnati, Kansas, Cincinnati, Kansas. I'm excited. Well, we
have to go.
Speaker 2 (01:42:27):
We get to go back to We need the Bearcats. Man,
we get to we get to go back. It's October
is going to be about the Reds and the Cats.
Speaker 6 (01:42:37):
Wake me up when September ends.
Speaker 10 (01:42:40):
For the Bengals, Reds go five and one, That's that's it.
Win five and then six.
Speaker 6 (01:42:47):
I want to catch the Padres well for them to
lose five straight. We win five straight?
Speaker 2 (01:42:52):
Can they sweep the Dodgers. Don't want to see us
sweep the Pirates. Dodgers don't want to see the Reds.
Two had three against Milwaukee, and we try Hunter Green
onto the Dodger Stadium mound a week from tomorrow night
for Game one.
Speaker 6 (01:43:04):
Oh my goodness, I can't wait.
Speaker 2 (01:43:08):
Thanks to our guy Mike Mills for producing on site,
our man Taran Hio Wings two back in Kenwood staff
here at twin peeks. We're back here next Tuesday. Yeah,
because of Monday Night football next week. The Mark Stoops
Radio Show is next. Stick around for that on ESPN

Speaker 11 (01:43:25):
