All right, what's up?
Speaker 4 (00:36):
Good afternoon, It's five minutes after three o'clock. This is
esp AT fifteen thirty Fallwaggers broadcasting from excuse me, directly
across the street from Great American Ballpark at the Holy Ground,
Downtown at the Banks, just across the street from the Yard,
just across the street from.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Tickest game of the season for the.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
Reds Tonight Reds and Pirates marquee pitching matchup Hunter Green
versus Paul Skeen's first pitch expected.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
At six p forty weather right now.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
If you're wondering about the weather Downtown Cincinnati, it's it
could be a factor tonight. Right now, I got here
about two fifteen one outside to shoot the show preview
video which is on Twitter at moegar thanks to Emery
Federal Credit Union.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
And right when I went outside, it started to drizzle.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
If it is drizzling now, it's drizzling very lightly, but
it is overcast. Rain could be a problem tonight. We
will see, and it could be a factor as the
Reds figure out what to do with Hunter Green, what
they figure out, how they figure out what to do
with their bullpen. We'll talk about that throughout the course
of the afternoon. Sam Luk here is going to join us,
coming up in just about fifteen minutes by now, you
(01:47):
know the holy grail. If you're coming to a Reds game,
how do you not come here before? How do you
not come here after a big Reds victory? And if
you don't have tickets but you want to be a
part of the fun tonight. Last night's atmosphere was terrific
at the Banks by the Ballpark. I know some are
fixated on the crowd size. The crowd last night in
(02:09):
the park was ready to explode, and unfortunately the team
really didn't give it an opportunity to. But the vibe
down here was awesome pregame and so you can be
a part of it here at the Grail, watch the game,
go across street to the ballpark, come back and celebrate.
And by the way, if we have rain tonight, remember
what they say here.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
When it rains, the Grail pours.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
Last night's game in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings,
that crowd last night was ready to explode. I am
not too interested in talking about crowd size. I think
it's the most boring topic in sports talk radio. But
if you want me to go there later on, I will.
But they had nearly thirty thousand in the yard last night. Again,
(02:56):
the crowd size to me not important. That crowd was
ready to go, was absolutely ready to go. And every
time it felt like it was ready to go, Matt
McClain hits the first pitch off a guy making his
big league debut into a fielder's choice to end the
sixth inning. They hit into double plays to end the seventh, eighth,
(03:16):
and ninth. It was deflating. Last night was worst case.
And I'm certainly not the first person to say this,
but Reds lose a ballgame. The Cubs had a six
to one lead over the New York Mets in the
middle innings, blow it. New York wins last night. And
what you worry about there is their offense kind of
taking off now. They scored nine runs last night for
(03:40):
all of their pitching issues. And they've got three rookies
in their starting rotation right now, like they're capable of
score it and a lot of runs and bunches. And
they did that in Chicago last night. So now they
no longer control their own destiny the Reds. If you're
like me late last night, you're clinging to something, and
with the thing that you're clinging to is okay. Arizona
(04:01):
loses to the Dodgers, and the Dodgers had a four
to nothing leads show Hey Otani was brilliant for six
innings last night. Unfortunately, at least unfortunately last night. The
Dodgers' bullpen right now is a mess. Tanner Scott, who
they paid a lot of money to this offseason, blows
his tense save and so.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Not only do you lose, not only.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Do you lose a game in the standings to the
New York Mets, who you now trail you're even up
with the Arizona Diamondbacks, And so it was worst case
last night on what was the night of hope coming
into it. Now, couple of things. This team tonight cannot
afford to lose ground. So we have talked all season
(04:43):
long about Red's must wins.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
This one's pretty much a must win.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
I know Paul Skeenes is pitching for Pittsburgh and we're
gonna talk about him with Sam Lakier in about ten minutes.
You have your ace pitching tonight. You cannot afford to
lose ground. The math starts to get really, really bad.
If by the end of this evening you're two back
with four to go. I don't think you want to
(05:14):
put yourself in a position where you're two back with
four to go. And I certainly don't think you want
to put yourself in a position where you have to
go to Milwaukee to sweep the Brewers. You cannot afford
to lose ground. You really cannot afford to not only
lose ground to the Mets, but have Arizona go in
front of you. And now over the final four games,
(05:34):
you got to figure out a way to leap.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Frog two teams.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
Tiebreakers be damned that math gets really hard, and so
you can't control what happens at Wrigley Field. You can't
control what happens in Phoenix. But you cannot lose ground
if you win the game tonight, and so obviously you
want to gain ground. If you don't, it's one more
click off the calendar. Keeping pace doesn't feel like the
(05:59):
end of the world, especially if they win.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
And keep Bass.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Losing ground, especially to New York, but really to both
would be extraordinarily deflating, and so there's only one way
to avoid that, and that's when the ball game tonight
with Hunter Green. Here's what I think is interesting. It's cloudy.
Forecast has called for rain off and on all day long. Frankly,
where I've been it's been more off than on. One
(06:25):
of the things you wonder about is arrain to lay,
rain to lay early in the game, where your starting
pitcher has taken the mound, and then you know the
rain comes. They put the tarp on the field, and
now the starting pitcher is burned. You're not going to
bring them out there. The home team controls before the
game starts any decisions about rain.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
So if you're the rets, this is simple. If you
think it's gonna.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Rain and cause a delay at like I don't know,
seven point fifteen, after Hunter Green has pitched an inning,
then simply.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Don't start the game.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
That hard as far as I'm concerned, and like I
get it, there's fan consideration, there's lots that goes into that,
but quite simply, I'm putting competitiveness first. I'm not putting
Hunter Green in a position where he pitches an inning
or two, we pull the tarp out and now he's
burned for the night.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
I ain't doing that. I am, I am.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
I am gonna start the game when we can and
when we know there's not gonna be a delay. And
I know whether it could have something to say about that,
but that's just my basic thought about how they handle
Hunter Green and the weather specifically tonight. Ellie de la
Cruz had an awesome night last night, which becomes kind
of a footnote because of how the game unfolded.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Will spend some time on that.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
The decision to pitch Brady Singer last night, which I'll
give Brady credit because for a while last night I thought,
with six, with six games and six days, the Reds,
we're gonna have to go into the bullpen much earlier
than Tito wanted to last night. Fortunately Brady at least
gave them some length. But he's now the guy in
line to pitch Game one's sixty two right now. It's
not gonna be Hunter Green will spend some time on that.
(08:00):
We'll talk about the lineup tonight. Eli Dela Cruz is
batting fifth. I don't love it.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
I don't hate it as much as many will. But
there is one thing they're doing I dislike. They are
using Sal Stewart, which is good. They've got to play
for Homers this evening, but if you're doing that, I'm
not sure Gavin Lux batting third is the right choice.
We'll get to that coming up here in just a bit.
Phone lines a little bit later on five one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty eight six six seven oh two three seven
(08:28):
seven six uh. Richard Skinner a little bit later on,
our friend Amy Wagner from Dean Dorton a little bit
later on as well. Not a lot of Bengals news today,
but a few odds and ends as it relates to
their game against the Denver Broncos. Coming up here in
just a bit. We'll throw out some pole questions as well,
and we'll have fun here at the Holy Grail.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Join us.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
We are here till six o'clock. Great place to pre
game before the Reds and Pirates tonight, Great place to
wait out a potential rein delay and an awesome pitching
matchup in store tonight, Hunter Green versus Paul Schemes, and
we'll talk about that and more, our guys. Sam le
Cure joins us next on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station,
Cincinnati's esp after three o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen to
(09:09):
thirty Molegger broadcasting today from the Holy Crail downtown Cincinnati
at the Banks. Reds and Pirates coming up in three
hours and twenty one minutes. You'll see Sam LeCure tonight
if you watch the TV coverage on the fan Duel
Sports Network. There's a lot to discuss. This is the
sixth time we've had you on this year, which is
a new record. Before we look ahead, let's talk about
(09:30):
last night Brady Singer. He at least gave him some length,
but not a great start. The topic. One of the
topics coming into the game was do you have Hunter
pitch on Tuesday so he could pitch Game one sixty two.
Does last night make you revisit Tito's decision?
Speaker 5 (09:48):
No, Because I mean you can argue that Brady's been
their best guy for two months for that reason, probably
more than any other. I say you let Brady continue
to go. So No, I didn't have any problem with that.
And if it really comes down to it, if you
really need Hunter in game one sixty two, I feel
(10:09):
like because he had such time off, he's got bullets left,
and he's big and strong enough that if he doesn't go,
you know, a crazy amount of pitches tonight, which I'd
let him go. If he needs to go one hundred
and fifteen one hundred and twenty to win this game tonight,
I think you let him do it. But if he
doesn't go some crazy amount, I think you bring him
back on short rest either in some form. You know,
(10:31):
maybe it's you pitch him to start the game for
four innings and then you piece it together after that.
But I wouldn't hesitate to do that, and I don't
think Tito would either.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
This is an awesome pitching matchup Skeens versus Green, and
I want to talk about each individually when you were starting,
did you ever think about who the other guy was
pitching for the other team?
Speaker 5 (10:51):
Yes, I did, and I think part of that probably
not until I got to the big leagues, because you know,
the guys in the minor league were just I mean,
I didn't necessarily know them, but I think my first
when I got called up in twenty ten, I started
six games and four of them had won Cy Young's
so I knew who it was across the way, and
(11:13):
I'm thinking, like, all right, well, hey man, take it
as a challenge if you want to be considered one
of the better pitchers in this game, which you know
obviously I wasn't, but that was the mindset. Then you
got to learn how to beat the best. You got
to hang in with these guys. You got to give
your team a chance to win. You know, every pitcher
is going to count a little bit more because they're
just gonna they're gonna probably shut you down pretty good.
(11:34):
So I was definitely aware of it, and maybe in hindsight,
would I have done that, Yeah, I probably still would have,
but I think my focus would have changed a little
bit towards I got to get nine pirates hitters out.
I don't have to get Paul Skins out surely, and
the same thing for him.
Speaker 6 (11:53):
So I can see it from both ways.
Speaker 5 (11:55):
But yes, I was aware, and both of these guys
are obviously aware of who is on the other side
of the night.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
I've got to think it's human nature, and more so
a Hunter because his team is playing for something. But
you give up a run in the first inning, and
that's that's a bigger deal than if it's a replacement
level pitcher throwing for the other side.
Speaker 5 (12:12):
Yeah, it's true, you know, but you have to count
on your offense. And you know, for Hunter and for
every guy who starts a game in the big leagues,
I mean, you're gonna go out there.
Speaker 6 (12:21):
You're never trying to give up a run.
Speaker 5 (12:23):
You're never okay with it, and you're not going into
it thinking, oh, I can't give up any runs. It's
it comes down to the old one pitch at a
time thing.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Man.
Speaker 6 (12:31):
You just got to execute each pitch as best as
you can.
Speaker 5 (12:33):
And you know, Hunter's so good that if he executes
it more often than not, then you get an outing
like he had the other night, you know, which was
near no.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
Hit, no question, Let's talk about Hunter Green. He was
awesome on Thursday. We've seen We've seen him at his
best often over the last two seasons. There is not
a pitcher that I've talked about with you more than
Hunter Green. What has been the best part watching him
these lasts two seasons, watching him evolve, I.
Speaker 6 (13:03):
Just feel like it's the evolution of it.
Speaker 5 (13:07):
You know, at first, I think I was pretty hard
on Hunter and I am wrong. It was wrong for
it because you know, when you come with hype, there
comes expectation, and I was that even clouded my judgment
a little bit. I'm like, man, I threw more innings
in the minor leagues to get to the than this
guy's stone in his life, in his entire life. You know,
I knew how to pitch when I got to the
(13:29):
big leagues.
Speaker 6 (13:31):
Hunter didn't. I would say, he just didn't know how
to pitch.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
And you know, kind of like what you're seeing with
Connor Phillips right now, Like with Repetition, the command is better,
like Hunter stuff is never going.
Speaker 6 (13:41):
To be bad, Like it's always going to be very good.
Speaker 5 (13:44):
When he gets more efficient and has gotten more efficient
with his mechanics and he's getting to the right spot,
he understands the routine in between outings, all those things.
You know, the whole process is coming together for him,
or has come together, and he goes out there and
then he's just ultra talented, you know.
Speaker 6 (13:58):
I mean, he's got it.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
He's as good at his best. He's as good a
picture as there is in the major leagues. Yeah, So,
I mean that's pretty that's pretty fun to watch.
Speaker 4 (14:08):
It's it's it's been fun to watch for me watching
him in twenty twenty two, and you and I talked
about it, like, boy, he could throw hard.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
He's got to learn to pitch.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Watching that process play out in real time, and granted
it's been stopped by injuries and at some point he's
going to have to proof he could stay healthy. But
watching that process play out and retime real time, for
me at least, and I'm sure for you, for somebody
who actually knows what they're watching, has been a has
been a blast.
Speaker 5 (14:30):
Oh man, It's it's a lot of fun because you
the hype is, you know, these guys don't miss much
as far as like scouting, like, they don't miss a
whole lot anymore. Right, I Mean, there's so much information
they can go to these analytics, and you know, they
can help the hype by giving them the information to
put their best tools together to be the picture that
(14:52):
they believe them to be right. So to watch Hunter
be able to do that and just the location of
the fastball, I feel like once he figured out that
he had figured it out, you know, once he became
aware of like, hey, I'm locking this in, then there's
become more of him putting the weight on his shoulders
to go out there.
Speaker 6 (15:12):
And I mean he says it pretty clearly.
Speaker 5 (15:14):
Sometimes it sounds like he's being real cocky, but he's like,
I know what I can do for this team. This
is my job to go out there and pitch like that.
This is the expectation for me. And there's an edge
to that. Like I like the edge a little bit
that he's that he's been thrown with more so I
probably am seeing it more since he's come back from
this injury. You know, kind of the stalking around the mound.
(15:34):
It's like Max Shursury a little bit, Like he he
starts stalking a little bit, and I like that because
then that means he's really on the attack.
Speaker 6 (15:41):
And when he's on the attack. The difference between one
hundred mile an.
Speaker 5 (15:45):
Hour fastball like your run of the mill and and
throwing a pitch with conviction that's the same speed, Like
it's just different. And that's I'll never be able to
properly explain that, but just kind of getting a fastball
for strike one versus like I'm going to beat you
with this pitch for strike one. Like the confidence and
the conviction in it, like it changes the it changes
(16:07):
the pitch, Like I know, it doesn't change anything with
the spin rate or anything, but it's there's just something
different about it. And I'm seeing that coming out of
him a lot more often, and obviously the results are
what they are.
Speaker 4 (16:20):
Sam Lekiras with this FanDuel Sports network. From a pitcher's perspective,
what makes Paul Skin so good?
Speaker 5 (16:26):
Uh, I think just the arsenal of it he's got,
you know, since we're talking a little bit about the
spin stuff, and I don't know a ton of I
don't dig a ton into it, but his arm angle
and what he's able to do out of the arm
angle with a multitude of pitches that he can locate.
So that's probably what makes him different than Hunter and
I'm I'm not gonna say that Paul Skins is better
(16:47):
than Hunter.
Speaker 6 (16:48):
I'm not going to say outright that he is. But
he's got, you know, four high quality pitches.
Speaker 5 (16:56):
Hunters has been throwing that split lightly, and I think
that that's about to be like a real weapon, not
just kind of a show me thing. But Skemes has
the command of it. He's got the action on it.
Because of the arm angled, there's more movement to some
of it that's later I and I think he's kind
of that conviction guy too, But I think he's had
(17:17):
it since day one because when he came into the
big leagues, unlike Hunter, he had thrown, he'd been pitching.
Speaker 6 (17:22):
He knew what it took at a really early age.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
You just don't see guys come to the major leagues
dominate the way that he did, and.
Speaker 6 (17:31):
So he kind of had it figured out.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
Now.
Speaker 5 (17:33):
I don't know what's kind of perplexing about him is
like is this the floor? Like you don't just come
into the big leagues being this good? Is this the
floor or is this already the ceiling? And he's just
going to be living in the penthouse for the next
fifteen years, Like I don't know. You know, if it's
the floor, it's the floor of the penthouse, right, So,
I mean he has he's pretty much.
Speaker 6 (17:55):
You know, the whole package. And if you look at
what he's done in his first fifty starts and they
that would speak to it as well.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
Is is it hard with these few number of games
remaining for players to not press Yeah?
Speaker 6 (18:09):
Yeah, I mean, I.
Speaker 5 (18:10):
Mean it is, and it's it's kind of it's kind
of a shoot yourself in the foot type of thing
because you're trying so hard that you're getting in your
own way a little bit and you went rather than
just kind of playing the game freely. And I think
when this team is at its best is when they
get ahead a little bit early and then they can
kind of I don't know, I felt like they started
(18:33):
playing their best baseball when they felt like they had
nothing to lose, because if you'd ask me two weeks ago,
I said they were dead in the water, right, Yeah.
Speaker 6 (18:39):
I think that there's a weight.
Speaker 5 (18:40):
You know, it's almost like they didn't shift to playing
like spoiler or anything, but there's like, hey man, like
we just got to go out there and play baseball,
like you know, kind of a what it is is
what it is.
Speaker 6 (18:50):
You know, what will be will be.
Speaker 5 (18:52):
But we're not going to go out there and you
know and stress ourselves out about it like this is fun.
Speaker 6 (18:56):
There should be fun.
Speaker 5 (18:57):
And I think when you realize that part of it
and you can get out of your own way and
not press.
Speaker 6 (19:02):
But it's just it's human nature to press.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
You know.
Speaker 5 (19:05):
If you're going to tell these guys to not try hard,
I mean, that's oxymoronic, right, right, So it is hard
not to press because you know it's at stake and
you've been working so long to get to this opportunity
that you know, you want to put the pedal to
the metal, right, So, but it's, uh, it's kind of
counterproductive to some degree.
Speaker 6 (19:25):
But yeah, it's it's almost impossible not you know, not
to press.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
Well, I was thinking about this at the ballpark last night.
Like the vibe among the fan base changed Sunday afternoon, Right,
it's like, yes, okay, fine, they're they're now in the
driver's seat, right like that they can do this. Yeah,
And I just I wonder and it's it's hard for
me to say because I'm not in there, but like
I just I wonder, just among the team among the players.
(19:52):
I'm not saying they lost last night because guys pressed.
Speaker 3 (19:54):
But the vibe had to it.
Speaker 4 (19:56):
It changed for us. It's human nature that it has
to change in that clubhouse.
Speaker 6 (20:00):
Yeah, it does. And I think and I don't.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
This is what they want, right, So get out of
your own way, like they want. The fans want to winner,
the team wants to be supported, you know, so they're
all coming together.
Speaker 6 (20:12):
And I thought the energy last night was great.
Speaker 5 (20:13):
I didn't feel like that was a game they necessarily
as it played out, that they should have won. I
didn't feel like they let a game get away like
I felt like they just got beat, you know. And
it's unfortunate. They didn't have many opportunities. They had runners
of scorn position three times, you know, but that's they
just they're Pitchburg pitching staff through the ball well and
(20:34):
they're gonna do that. They're one of the best pitching
staffs in baseball. I think they're fifth or sixth or
seventh in era, you know. So you knew it was
going to be a challenge as far as that goes.
And this has been an inconsistent offense, and it wasn't
unfortunate that they lost of course it was, but I
don't feel like they let a game get away.
Speaker 6 (20:52):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
And you can't press like that if that's the exact thinking,
you don't want to be happening in the clubhouse, like,
oh man, we should have won that. Yeah, you should
have won it. And on paper, but those guys driving
nice cars too.
Speaker 4 (21:05):
Very very well, said our guy Sam Leck. Heure, I
know you have to get to work, man, Thanks so much.
Speaker 5 (21:12):
Well, if anybody listens to your show, I imagine millions,
do millions it's eight dollar tickets or like there's some
eight dollar tickets.
Speaker 6 (21:20):
It's like the three two one thing going on. I
can tell.
Speaker 5 (21:24):
I mean, I'm about to start writing the slate and
one of them is going to be I always do this.
Speaker 6 (21:28):
I'll spill the beans with you.
Speaker 5 (21:29):
Is that your notice like the fan like it's noticed,
it's noticed when you're not there. I mean, I remember
dude playing and when we were winning divisions and on
you know, a Tuesday or Wednesday night. Yeah, maybe it
was against Pittsburgh and there's eighteen thousand, but we're one
of the best teams in baseball and we notice that, right,
And then we noticed when you show up and there's
a difference in the energy that you can provide for
(21:50):
those players.
Speaker 6 (21:51):
And you may not think that, and you may not
know when to do it, but just do something, you know,
just do something, are yelling, put the phone down, whatever
it is.
Speaker 5 (22:03):
If there's if there's a big spot, and you know
what you know as baseball fans, you know in the
big spot is when there's runners on base, you know,
and one of your better hitters is up. You know,
if you want to do the La Chant, do it,
if you want to do the Steve Ost what whoever.
I mean, it's it's felt, and it kind of gives
the player if they're given their one hundred percent, right.
(22:23):
I think Pete Rose might have said this, but everybody
else is given one hundred percent and I'm given one
hundred and ten. I'm ten percent better than the league,
and fan base can give you the ten percent without
you even kind of knowing it. It just your body
starts to be able to do things. The focus titans,
you know, think about a slow motion moment where everything
kind of shrinks in your laser focus. I mean, having
(22:47):
a city back you. I mean a lot of people
don't know what that feels like. Man, having a fan base,
a city on your side supporting you. Like man, it
has felt big time. So I appreciated the folks that
came out last night. I hope a lot a lot
of folks do tonight. Well, I appreciate you for having
me on as always, and let's when a ball game
(23:09):
tonight and hopefully well you can get me back on
time number seven, time number eight and so on.
Speaker 6 (23:14):
Hope.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
So you're gonna be mister October for us. That's the idea.
You're the best. Thanks man, great, I brother, Sorry, guys,
Sam Leck here to my FanDuel Sports Network.
Speaker 3 (23:24):
We are.
Speaker 4 (23:25):
I bothered him off air and said, like, we have
you on like once a month because we don't want
to abuse the privilege, but like in October, we're gonna
have you on once per series.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
That's the idea.
Speaker 4 (23:36):
We're expected to be joined by Tommy Thrall here at
the Holy Grail. It's twenty six away from four o'clock.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 7 (23:46):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic.
Speaker 8 (23:51):
From the UC Health Traffic Center. The UC Cancer Center
uppers person lines prostate cancer care, exclusive clinical trials and treatment.
So you won't find anywhere else. Call five one three

Up to a twenty minute delay getting through there now
(24:13):
on southbound four to seventy one. Another accident blocking off
the right lane on the Big Mac Bridge. Police on
scene two. I'm at Ezelic with traffic. This report is sponsored.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
Station Sports Station.
Speaker 7 (24:26):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 4 (24:29):
Twenty minutes away from four o'clock. We're at the Holy Grail.
This is esp IN fifteen thirty. Reds and Pirates. First
pitch is three hours away, which means Tommy Thraw will
be on the air in two and a half hours.
And I know he has a thousand more important things
to do than sit here with me, but nice enough
to give us a few minutes. It's awesome to have you.
Thank you for doing this absolutely man, Thanks for wanting
(24:49):
to have me on. This is great, This is fun, man,
This is it, this is what it's all about.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
It night.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
I've sat in that ballpark in September by myself a
lot going, you know, just I want these games to matter.
And last night that crowd was ready to explode.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
They were it was man that place that it was.
Speaker 4 (25:08):
I said it on the air last night, I said, look,
size wise, this isn't the biggest crowd all year. Yeah,
but it's one of the best crowds all year. I mean,
they were into it. You could, you could feel the excitement.
They just never quite got that moment. It felt like
every time the Reds were getting close, they get into
a double play there late, and it's.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Just it's that's tough. That's baseball, you know. But you
know what, we've got something to root for right now.
Speaker 4 (25:31):
It's awesome we do and like, all right, last night
was worst case because what happens in Chicago and in Phoenix.
But if there's one thing this team this season has
taught us, it's right right when they punch in the gun,
right when they get punched in the gut, they come
off the canvas, which is why I expect them the
win tonight.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
Tommy.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
Look, I mean, what was it September? Was it September sixth?
They were six out. It's it's really hard to make
up six games in September, especially when the team and
in front of you has an astronomical payroll and they're
the New York Mets. Well, lo and behold, they overcame that.
Now it's one game at a time. It's been one
(26:09):
game at a time all year, but it really is.
I mean, it's day by day all you have to do.
It takes one win and one loss by the Mets
and then the Reds are right back in that spot.
I mean, it's just it's what it's all about. But
that it just shows you that this team, no matter
what kind of blows they take, they can get right
back up. They're gonna come right back at you the
(26:30):
next day. That's what this team's done all year long.
I've told people, I feel like they've done a pretty
good job. I mean there's still peaks and valleys, but
they're not like they were. I mean, look at the season.
There hasn't been an extended losing streak. There's been an
extended stretch where maybe they've they've lost several but consecutively.
They've just been able to get the wins here and there,
(26:52):
even in a tough stretch, to keep from stringing together
long losing streaks. Look at the Mets, Yeah, I think
I saw today They've had three losing streaks over six
or seven games. There's only been one other team that
made the playoffs. That's that's endured what they have. The
Reds haven't gone through that, they haven't had the long
winning streaks, but that they've played that they stay and
(27:12):
remain right there, and that's what they've done. That's what's
put them in this position. You're more qualified to speak
to this than anybody. You spend time with Terry Francona
one on one every day. To me as an outsider,
that's the Francona effect, right, And the message all season
long has been we may have lost yesterday, fine, what
are we doing today? Where he gets a question about
(27:34):
something that may happen the next series, don't know, Let's
win today. That sounds it sounds cliche. I think with
this team, with its makeup, I think that message has helped.
It's not just a message, it's the way they go
about it. I mean that it's real. I mean, first
of all, it is real. He said it in his
press conference when he was named manager. Look, I like
(27:54):
to wake up every day and figure out how we're
going to beat that team that day, and that that's
what he does. He takes it day by day. All right,
yesterday's done, it's over with. You can't change it. How
do we win today? Maybe it doesn't look good, but
let's figure it out. Let's figure out how the puzzle
fits together so that it at the end of the
day it ends with a Reds win. Look, this guy
(28:18):
knows how to handle people as well as anybody I've
ever been around in my life. I mean, this guy
is incredible. Tito, is it to me? He is a
big reason why this team is in the position that
they're in right now to have success? I asked him,
and I think this exemplifies it, maybe as well as
(28:38):
I can put it. I asked him one day when
the energy was a little low. The team had been
dragging a little bit. They were in a tough stretch.
It was one of those long stretches where it's just exhausting. Yeah,
and the season grinds on you a little bit. I said,
all right, in a stretch like this, because I remember
I was beat I mean I was worn down. I said,
if I'm worn down, they've got to be. Now, how
(29:00):
do you get the energy up in a stretch like this,
Because you can't just walk around and go hey, let's
go get it doesn't work that way, Like that's that's
a tired act. After a while, he goes, look, I
think it comes down to really pressing upon the coaches. Look,
we've got to have some energy in everything we do,
in all the pregame, in the pregame meetings, in the
(29:23):
pregame work. Just make sure as coaches you have your
energy up and hopefully that permeates the entire clubhouse. That
rubs off on all the players, and that just lifts
collectively the energy of the room. And I when he
said it, it's so simple, but it makes so much sense,
and that's that's the way.
Speaker 3 (29:42):
To do it.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
And I think that's that's the effect that he has
on this organization, this this team.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
I said this to you in spring training.
Speaker 4 (29:50):
You know when when Tito Francona retired, I listened to
every podcast because I just love listening to him talk.
Speaker 3 (29:56):
And I'm like, I envy your job. Could you get
a chance to sit in there with him on air
and off every day? What's that been?
Speaker 4 (30:03):
Like?
Speaker 3 (30:03):
It's awesome.
Speaker 4 (30:03):
I Mean, first of all, the stories are tremendous. You
get them going about Michael Jordan and just your jaw
hits the floor.
Speaker 3 (30:12):
Like wow, I mean he's actually close with Michael Jordan.
Speaker 4 (30:15):
Yeah, and he's got some great stories, stories about his
Red Sox days, interacting with with the just all the
stories that you hear, and then through that you really
just feel his love of the game, his love of baseball,
his love of competing, and then you get into all right,
how do you win today? And then you get into
the weeds that you can't really do on the air
(30:38):
because you only have four minutes, so it's kind of
you start to get into the weeds, and then you
just you walk away almost daily learning something because this
guy knows more about baseball. I mean, he's forgotten more
about the game than you'll ever know. And it's just
it's incredible his wealth of knowledge about baseball. So it's
(30:58):
it's fun, I mean, it is It is everything you
hope for in this job to be around somebody like
that decision he's made that's been under the microscope. Is
Hunter pitches tonight not last night, Brady Singer. He at
least gave him length because you know, I'm thinking in
the second ending last night, like oh boy, he got
parade of relievers and then that's going to catch up
to him over the next six days. So Hunter's going
(31:19):
to pitch tonight. If one sixty two matters, it's going
to be Brady Singer. Then we'll see how they manage it.
Your thoughts on on the way Tito made the decision
and how this may unfold. Look, he talked about it yesterday.
He goes, Look, I can't explain everything. Sometimes there's elements
of decisions that have to be made that can't necessarily
be public.
Speaker 3 (31:40):
I think, is the way he put it, I get
it well.
Speaker 4 (31:44):
First of all, I think given Hunter an extra day
to go today is good, especially after he went the
distance his last time out. He's battled injuries a couple
of times this year. Make sure he's one hundred percent healthy.
And the advantage of all of it is he's not
available Game one sixty two, but he's available game one
of the postseason. But again, you have to make But
(32:06):
I don't know that's not one of those things. Because
the pitching has been so good, then I think you're
in a pretty good spot no matter who you're running
out there. Yeah, in Game one sixty two, I mean,
like you said, it's gonna be Brady Singer now, a
little bump in the road yesterday, but look at the
way he's been pitching. He has been brilliant. He's a
veteran guy. I don't think that's a bad guy to
(32:26):
have out there in that situation. Shame of last night's
result is if they win that game. The story last
night and today is Ellie Dela Cruz in the biggest
game of the season in during what has been a
tough last two months for him, shines bright.
Speaker 3 (32:41):
Yeah, well, look at his numbers.
Speaker 4 (32:42):
I mean, I think when you take a step back
at the end of the year and you look at
the numbers that he has put together throughout the course
of a season, you'll be pretty impressed with the year.
Speaker 3 (32:52):
I mean, it's still gonna look like a pretty good year.
Speaker 4 (32:56):
But that is despite having a couple of really rough months,
and make no mistake about it, they have been very
unelly like. But we all know that he's capable of
taking off and if he's tay, if this is the
beginning of him taking off here for the last six
games of the season. He's the type of guy that
can carry a team, and boy, that would be great.
(33:16):
Yesterday was the best he's looked in the last two
months by far played like a star, outstanding in the
field at the play, You're right, I mean it was great,
and so you know, he gets on the ninth inning
and I'm like, if they win this game, that's what
we're talking about, right, and instead it's a footnote. Yeah,
it's it's too bad. But you know what, like we
talked about earlier, it's a new day. Hopefully that's a
(33:37):
good sign that he's getting going again because what he
did yesterday in my mind at least, and I'll talk
to Tito about it here in a little bit, but
what he did last night is he re established himself
as a presence in the middle.
Speaker 3 (33:49):
Of the lineup.
Speaker 4 (33:50):
Yeah, you didn't have to really worry about him much
in the lineup the last couple of months. Now that's
in the Pirate's mind. He's not back up to third,
but he's still hitting cleanup.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (33:59):
That's that is a huge asset for this team to
have him in the middle of the order hitting like
that and hopefully backs it up again tonight and gosh,
it's I think tonight has a chance to be an
incredible environment. Hopefully mother nature cooperates. Hope so special pitching
matchup a lot of steaks. I know you have stuff
to do, so I'll let your on. I can't thank
you enough.
Speaker 3 (34:19):
I know this was short.
Speaker 4 (34:20):
Notice, No no worry. You're always kind enough to answer
our call. So to come over here and do this

(36:51):
will fulfill WHAT i feel my obligation is because on this,
show we you, know we give the people what they,
want right we we we discussed topics that seem to
be of interest to large chunks of our. Audience in,
Fact i'm throwing out a poll question right now related to,
that And i'll make.
Speaker 3 (37:11):
That make sense in a few. Minutes but it's On
twitter At.
Speaker 4 (37:14):
MULWEGER i Think i've changed my mind on On Ellie,
Delacruse Ellie Dela. CRUZ i was just talking about this
with With tommy Thrawl. Reads lose the game last, night
and that's that's the major, headline and for good. Reason
it's it was a big, game and it was a
game that not only you. Lose it was a night
where it was worse case you. KNOW i, mean you
don't need me to tell you what happened In. Chicago
(37:36):
mets came back from down five to beat The, cubs
so they pull ahead Of, cincinnati and The diamondbacks pull
even by coming back against The La dodgers last.
Speaker 3 (37:45):
Night Ellie Dela cruz and, look.
Speaker 4 (37:51):
We have we have been critical Of ellie's performance this,
year which you can do and still, love like you
can be critical of your, kids you still love. THEM
i will take all that Imaginary Elie Dela cruz. STOCK
i will bet on the, TALENT i will bet on the.
Upside by all, accounts the work ethic is. Great he's
not yet twenty four years. Old like if if you
(38:14):
believed coming into the season That Elie Dela cruz's ceiling
is one of reflective of being one of the best
players in, BASEBALL i think you should still feel that.
WAY i think also it is fair to look at
his season and feel underwhelmed by.
Speaker 3 (38:28):
It and part of that is the way.
Speaker 4 (38:30):
The team was built kind of demanded That eli be,
GREAT i, think especially in the second half of the.
Season And i'll acknowledge the quad. Issue not only has
his production left a lot to be, desired watching, him
watching him has left a lot to be. Desired but
last night he was. Terrific he made a couple of
beautiful plays at. Shortstop it's a home, run an absolute.
(38:55):
Rocket two more, hits gets on base in the ninth
inning last. Night if there's one ISSUE i would, HAVE
i really wanted to see him steal second with one
out in the ninth BECAUSE i think that enhances your
chance of Seeing Will benson come to the.
Speaker 3 (39:08):
Plate, unfortunately double playball into the.
Speaker 4 (39:12):
Game but if they win that game last, night the
story is about How Ellie Dela cruz shined brightest on
the biggest stage of the.
Speaker 3 (39:22):
Season they've played in front of bigger. Crowds this.
Speaker 4 (39:25):
Year was not a game that was shown ON espn
or anything like, That but until, tonight that was the
biggest game of the, season and you had a crowd
that was ready to. Explode you had a game with
a lot riding on, it and the guy who was
supposed to be their best player played like. It and
if they win the, GAME i think that's the. Story
(39:46):
unfortunately it becomes a, footnote but it's not insignificant that it,
happened because it does feel like Maybe ellie has turned
the corner a little. Bit and you're looking for over
the next week and hopefully, beyond you're looking for some
guys who can carry. You you're looking for some guys
who can carry. You and number, One ellie's got to
be better. Defensively last night he was, flawless made a
(40:08):
great throw at short, stop made a couple of other
really nice. Plays nice play where he had to come
in and bare hand of ball and throw a guy,
Out like that's what you. Want but you're looking for
dudes on a team that has offensive deficiencies that's gonna
have to win chances are low scoring.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
Games you're looking for somebody who can carry.
Speaker 4 (40:24):
You the player who has always been most likely to
carry The Cincinnati reds has Been ellie de La. Cruz,
maybe just maybe he can continue to carry them, tonight
which is Why i've changed my. Mind so the starting
lineup came out shortly before we went on the. Air
ellie is batting. Fifth, now most of the season he's hit,
third he's been dropped down to, seventh he has hit.
(40:46):
Sixth think for a game tonight he's betting. Fifth Gavin
lux is batting. Third Gavin lux hits a home run
one percent of the, time for comparison's, Sake Will benson
four point nine. Percent So i'll, admit, like the first
THING i looked at is where are the guys who
have some? Pop where are the guys who can hit
the ball out of the, ballpark BECAUSE i think that's
(41:06):
at a premium, tonight Right, like someone pointed this out
On twitter And i'll go find who it. Was the
last Time Paul skeins pitched against The reds was only
one time this. Year The red's got seven hits in that,
game all of them. Singles it's hard to string together
consecutive hits against a guy Like Paul. Skeins, Now Paul
skins may only pitch five innings, tonight we will, see
(41:28):
but it's hard to string together multiple hits against a
guy Like Paul. Skeans So i'm looking for dudes who
can run into. One i'm looking to, Hit, like IF
i hit two solo home runs, tonight maybe with Unter,
green that's good. Enough So Gavin lux hits home runs
one percent of the, Time Will benson four point nine.
Percent you Want gavin in the. Lineup that's, Fine i'm
not batting them. Third Put ellie. There you've put him
(41:49):
there all season. Long you've put him there all season,
Long you've slit him. Down it feels like he's starting
to swing a better. Bat let's just say the third
spot in the batting warder comes up in the bottom
of the ninth inning tonight and they're down By. Iran
would you Want Gavin lux at the plate Or Ellie Dela.
Cruz i'll make that a poll. Question would you Want
Gavin lux at the Player Ellie Dela? Cruz and SO
(42:12):
i will make this about frequency of at bat likelihood
of a guy coming. Up the higher you hit in the,
order the more at batch you're gonna, get the more played,
appearances the more likely you are to come up in a.
GAME i don't want a scenario like they played The
cubs last. Week Right Hunter green dominant Against. Chicago that
game ended With chicago's, one, two and three hitters batting
(42:33):
in the top of the ninth. Inning hunter completed the,
game got the, Shutout red's got the. WIN i don't
want a scenario like that in a game where you're
likely to not get a lot of. Hits maybe it's
a situation where Ninth inning gets, one two and. Three
gavin lux is not a player who hasn't had value this.
Season but there are other GUYS i want at the
(42:55):
plate in that. Situation ellie is one of. Them Sala
stewart is one of. Them frankly against a right in,
Particular Will benson is one of. Them and so a
guy who hits a long ball one percent of the
time is just not a guy that in ten night's
GAME i want batting. FIRST i Think Tito francona did
the right thing Moving ellie de La cruz down, earlier
moving him to the seventh spot because he was struggling so.
(43:16):
Much when it feels like he has turned it, on
it's like a basketball player who's not giving you good,
minutes you reduce his, minutes but if he starts to
take advantage of the miniature giving, him you increase the.
MINUTES i don't think it's unreasonable to, Say, ellie who
is supposed to be their best, player who is their
most physically gifted, guy starting to swing it, well, cool take,
(43:37):
advantage put him higher in the batting, order and then
protect him better than he did last night With matt,
McLain and instead let that Be Spencer, steer who's been
really good, recently or Maybe Sal. Stewart IF i were
to quarrel with one thing about, tonight it would be
with the way he's swinging the.
Speaker 6 (43:53):
Bat.
Speaker 4 (43:53):
NOW i Want ellie to get as many opportunities as,
possible especially in a game where it's unreasonable to suggest
that The reds aren't getting get a ton of. Hits
we will see more on that coming up here in
just a. Bit pull questions on this show are a
service of A United Heartland. Insurance it's that time of, year,
(44:14):
Man we're getting INTO q. Four as they say in
the corporate, BUSINESS q. FOUR q four is when you
start to look at your, insurance, right so see what
you're paying and then see what the folks That United
Heartland insurance can do for. You they get an office In,
hamilton they got one In, burlington they've got one In
cincinnati UHI ns dot.
Speaker 3 (44:31):
COM i will admit, this.
Speaker 4 (44:37):
As a sports fan and as a sports talk radio,
host the topic of a team's attendance could not be more.
Boring i'm bored by. IT i JUST i don't THINK
i have done AND i could be wrong about, this
BUT i don't THINK i have done an attendance related
(44:57):
topic in fifteen. YEARS i just number. ONE i think
why people go or don't go to, GAMES i think
is mostly, Anecdotal like everybody's got their own reasons for
deciding to go to the ballpark or not going to the.
Ballpark like everybody's got their own. REASONS i love painting
with a broad. BRUSH i as a sports, FAN i
JUST i don't, care LIKE i don't. Care SO i
(45:21):
asked the pole question On, twitter do you care about
your favorite team's? ATTENDANCE i just posted, it so we
don't have a ton of, votes but fifty five percent
of you say, no which means forty five percent say.
Speaker 3 (45:29):
Yes SO i bring this.
Speaker 4 (45:30):
Up in the last couple of, days The reds have
made their tickets eight. Dollars now you're not going to
get scout seats for eight, bucks but eight dollar tickets are.
Available they've taken The tuesday promotion and they've made it
for the entirety of this pirate. Series three dollar, beers
two dollars hot, dogs one dollar ice. Cream the crowd last,
NIGHT i guess they drew twenty nine, thousand which for
(45:52):
A tuesday In september relative to what we're used to is, astronomical.
Speaker 3 (45:58):
And good.
Speaker 4 (46:00):
Them if they got twenty nine, thousand good for. Them
if they got forty four. THOUSAND i couldn't care less
if they drew one thousand last. NIGHT i never, understand
and maybe this could be explained to. ME i never
understand why so many sports fans seem to care.
Speaker 3 (46:18):
So much about.
Speaker 4 (46:20):
Attendance LIKE i was told last, night, well this is
embarrassing For reds. FANS i wasn't. EMBARRASSED i went to
the ballgame last. NIGHT i had a good. TIME i
wish the team would have. Won atmosphere was, fun would
have been better had the team won the, Game.
Speaker 3 (46:35):
LIKE i do.
Speaker 4 (46:36):
NOT i have never understood, This And i'm, LIKE i
have friends who obsess over. Attendance number, one if you're
at the, game why do you care who else is?
There number, two if you're not at the, game who
are you to bang on other people for not going
to the? Game LIKE i Just i'm a big believer
AND i live a very happy. Life and one of
(46:58):
the reasons why IS i just don't concern myself that
much with. Others, NOW i care about the people closest to,
me AND i don't like anybody who harms. Others but
when it comes to what other people do with their
free time and, money just no. INTEREST i don't care
how people. DRESS i don't care WHAT tv shows people.
WATCH i don't care which political party you're a part.
OF i don't care whether you decide to go to
(47:19):
games or not good at? Games DO i think games
are more fun when more people are. There, sure does
a lack of attendance keep me from enjoying?
Speaker 3 (47:26):
Myself absolutely.
Speaker 4 (47:28):
Not IF i owned The Cincinnati, reds WHICH i WISH i,
did if my last name Were, castelini WHICH i wish it,
WAS i would care about attendance because neither are.
Speaker 3 (47:37):
True why SHOULD i? Care?
Speaker 4 (47:40):
Again if they get forty thousand, tonight it's gonna be
a lot of. Fun but you know, what if they
get eleven thousand, Tonight if you go to the, game
you should still have a good. Time and if they,
win are you gonna feel any better about to win
if there's thirty thousand more fans? There so this was
a big thing On twitter last, Night and LIKE, i
my job is to go in the direction the audience
(48:02):
wants me to go in and usually we do. That,
well sometimes we. Missfire But i'm looking at the chatter last,
night and, again Like twitter is not real. LIFE i
Take twitter with a grain of. Salt people behave on
that app differently than they behave in real. Life But
i'm watching people go back and forth about. Attendance i'm
Reading Jason williams column, today, which by the, Way Jason
(48:24):
williams column was not an indictment against. Fans it was
a statement THAT i think is. True The reds have
been mostly bad for thirty, years and over that, time
people have gotten out of the habit of going to
baseball games for my.
Speaker 3 (48:36):
Money it's cool that they're doing eight dollars.
Speaker 4 (48:38):
Tickets it's cool that they came into last night having
won five straight. Games there are a lot of fans
for whom a five game winning streak and eight dollar
tickets aren't going to change decades worth of. Habits but
WHAT i, guess more than, ANYTHING i am baffled to
a degree at the extent to which people seem to
care about. Attendance if you're A reds, fan does it
(49:02):
really bother you that? Much if The reds don't draw
does it make you feel better about their success when
they are? Successful if they do, so you, Could i'll
do it for me, Personally, like whenever the topic is,
ATTENDANCE i struggle with. It one of my, weaknesses AND
i have many as an on air, personality is If
(49:25):
i'm not interested in a, TOPIC i struggle with. It
when the topic has circled over to, ATTENDANCE i struggle
with it BECAUSE i get bored by it. Quickly but
if that's your, thing what you can do is explain
to me why it's your. Thing why do you care
about whether the stands are full or not if you
don't own the, team if you don't have a financial
investment in the ticket. Sales if you're A reds fan
(49:47):
tonight and they beat The pirates one Hundred green strikes
out twelve players And Elie Dela cruz it's a four
hundred and forty foot home, run and they gain a
game on The, mets and they gain a game on The,
diamondbacks and they pull into the driver's seat for the
last wildcard. Spot what do you care about the makeup
of the? Crowd if they play In october and get
to The National League Division series and have a chance
(50:10):
to advance to THE, lcs and for one reason or,
another one of those games doesn't sell out and they
still win.
Speaker 3 (50:17):
It what do you? CARE i care about what the team.
Speaker 4 (50:21):
DOES i don't really care that much about who's in
attendance for. It AND i feel like Maybe i'm not
in the, minority but there's a large amount of people
who seem to feel a lot. Different and so WHAT
i will, do probably for the only Time i've won three, seven, four,
nine fifteen.
Speaker 3 (50:38):
Thirty why does attendance matter to?
Speaker 4 (50:40):
You seventeen after four o'clock At muegger On, twitter there's
our pole.
Speaker 3 (50:44):
Question i'll throw another one out there here in just
a few.
Speaker 4 (50:48):
Minutes it'll be About Gavin lux Versus Elie. Delacruz Watch
Gavin lux will hit a big home run tonight in
the bottom of the eighth, inning and we'll all laugh at.
Ourselves it's eighteen after. Four we're broadcasting From Holy, grail Downtown,
cincinnati our. Front Amy wagner is going to join us
in just about fifteen minutes From Dean Dorton Private wealth
ON espn fifteen Thirty Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 7 (51:10):
Station CINCINNATI'S espn fifteen thirty traffic.
Speaker 8 (51:16):
From THE Uc Health Traffic. Center THE Uc Cancer center
offers person lines prostate cancer, care exclusive clinical trials and
treatments you won't find anywhere. Else call five one three

Moment the first one northbound seventy. Five it is on
the exit ramp to eastbound two to seventy five In Sharon.
(51:38):
Veil the right shoulder is blocked off on the ramp
and On Ridge. Road one more accident over Near Highland.
Avenue i'm at ezelic with. Traffic this report is sponsored Bye.
Speaker 7 (51:48):
Lampball in THE, nati brought to you By Belterra casino
And Balterra park ON espn fifteen, thirty the official home
of The Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (51:59):
Bank twenty two minutes after, four we're broadcasting from The
Holy grail ON espn fifteen to, thirty, which by the,
way football in The. Natty you know we're here Before
bengals home. Games the next one is obviously The detroit
game from the fifth a week From, sunday and So
Tony pike AND i will have that the pregame show at.
Noon that's a four o'clocker afore twenty five game Against.
(52:22):
Detroit can't wait to see what The bengals offensive line
as in store for A detroit front that Sacked Lamar
jackson seven times When Al golden has for defense that
has scored ninety points over the last two.
Speaker 3 (52:34):
Games but we'll be here before that, game and so join.
Us we could be.
Speaker 4 (52:39):
Talking about The National League Division, series, which by the,
WAY i just saw, this and don't get mad at
The reds for doing, this because this is what teams.
Do National League Division series tickets go on sale tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (52:54):
At three.
Speaker 4 (52:54):
O'clock, now, remember since the last time The reds were
in the postseason a real playoff twenty, thirteen the wildcard
round used to be best of. One now it's best
of three if The reds make. It let's assume for
a second it's The. Dodgers that would be a best
of three. Series all the games would be IN, la
(53:15):
so in that first, round The reds would not be at.
Home the second, round, obviously The reds would be the lowest,
seed so they would start games one and two on the,
Road games three and, four And i'm not even gonna
get into who they would play Because i'd have to
recite the entire, bracket but they would play games three
and four On, Wednesday october eighth And, Thursday october.
Speaker 3 (53:34):
Ninth those would be the two home.
Speaker 4 (53:37):
Games tickets for those two games are on sale tomorrow
at three. O'clock and, yes if they don't play the,
games then you're not going to be out any.
Speaker 3 (53:45):
Money so there you.
Speaker 4 (53:47):
Go but so we can be Talking reds Playoff, baseball
we could be talking about The bengals And lions On
october the, Fifth no Major bengals news of. Significance we
did have some really good stuff. Yesterday Paul Danner, junior
as always was joining joined us On.
Speaker 3 (54:03):
Tuesdays we.
Speaker 4 (54:04):
Talked we talked About Rudy johnson, yesterday AND i don't
know how you. Don't rudy passed away at the age
of forty. Five just a, terrible terrible. Tragedy and So
paul AND i talked about the two thousand and five,
team the mid two, Thousands Rudy, johnson just a beloved
member of a bunch of teams that a lot of us.
Speaker 3 (54:25):
Still hold in high.
Speaker 4 (54:26):
Regard and then we obviously talked about all the issues
this team is facing right. Now sean, Sayed statson scheme
newsletter as. Well if you missed that, conversation if you
Missed paul both available on The iHeartRadio, app or you
could just go to my page AT espn fifteen thirty dot.
Com I'll i'll be honest with, you BECAUSE i always.
Am had The bengals gone out and signed another, quarterback
(54:50):
that'd be cool with.
Speaker 3 (54:51):
Me that's, interesting.
Speaker 4 (54:52):
Right that's whether It's Jameis winston Or Russell wilson Or Kirk,
cousins or name your FAVORITE qb that people have heard
of that they would have acquired from another. Team that's.
Interesting Like Brett rippen not. Interesting Brett rippen Versus Jake
browning not. Interesting Jake browning trying to fend off perhaps
a challenge from A qb that has had success, elsewhere that's.
(55:14):
Interesting i'm in the interesting, business so sign me up for.
It as it relates specifically to the. Team, Uh i'm
frankly a little bit more interested in and concerned about
the stuff happening Around jake Brown he is a BACKUP.
Qb THE nfl does not view him as a. Starter
(55:37):
if it, did somebody would have pried him away From.
Cincinnati he is a backup. Quarterback backup quarterbacks have low.
Floors jake's floor On, sunday he pretty much came close to.
IT i still feel like his backup QB's. Go there's a,
reasonable reasonably high ceiling. There but that gets cut into
if the offensive line can't block for, Him and that
(55:59):
gets cut into even more significantly if the guys who
are supposed to make plays not only don't make, them
but give away the football Like Jamar Chase, right that,
Happened Like Noah fan that, happened Like Samaj. Peebles So
i'm a little bit more interested in what The bengals
coaching staff does with the players they have at their
(56:22):
disposal on the offensive line to Give Jake browning a
better chance for. SUCCESS i don't think that happened On.
Sunday that doesn't mean That jake played. Well it doesn't
mean that you shouldn't think would they be better with
a different. QUARTERBACK i Just jake's gonna be the. Guy
WHAT i worry about is can the coaching, staff with
what they, have give him more of an opportunity to.
(56:45):
Succeed if the running game continues to be as futrid
as it has, been dancers are no Like Jake browning
two years. Ago there were two things that stand out
to me about that stretch of time where he Played number.
One they ran it.
Speaker 3 (56:59):
Effectively number, too they tapped into a screen game that was,
really really.
Speaker 4 (57:03):
Good if neither of those two things become a part
of what The bengals do moving, forward this isn't going to.
Work and that doesn't matter which crappy backup quarterback from
another team you bring in or if It's Jake. Browning
the other one Is Al golden's. Defense Al golden's defense
has been eh, like did enough Against, cleveland opportunistic Against,
(57:30):
jacksonville took advantage of Some Brian thomas business.
Speaker 3 (57:34):
Decisions you.
Speaker 4 (57:36):
Know the big takeaway from The vikings game defensively for
me Was Al golden had a unit that was on
the field not.
Speaker 3 (57:43):
Sure they looked really ready to.
Speaker 4 (57:45):
Play when you've Got Jake browning in an offense that
can't run, it if you want to have any, chance
your defense has to become an. Asset your defense has
to become something that can win you. Games can that?
Happen remember the the thought coming into the year was best,
case remember past, case their league, average league average is
(58:05):
going to be. Enough league, average with this offense has
currently constructed and with its current level of, productivity isn't
closed to good.
Speaker 3 (58:12):
Enough and so maybe it's just. ME i don't.
Speaker 4 (58:16):
KNOW i think if you care about The, bengals the
bigger issue is not so much which quarterbacks should they
have traded for or WHICH qb should Challenge Jake. Browning
It's Al golden's defense going to be a legitimate asset
or something that's just, there because to, me if it's league,
average it's just. There and can the coaching staff figure
out a way with the players Around Jake browning to
(58:38):
give him a better chance.
Speaker 3 (58:39):
At, Succeeding we'll see.
Speaker 4 (58:41):
Him we spend some time on that With Richard skinner
coming up at five twenty five point three seven four
nine fifteen thirty is our number eight sixty six seven
h two three seven seven.
Speaker 3 (58:50):
Six works as.
Speaker 4 (58:52):
Well On, wednesdays we spend time with our Friend Amy
Wagner Dean Dorton Private. Wealth i'm gonna ask her if
maybe it's just, ME i think enough is? Enough when's
enough going to be? Enough And i'll make that make
sense when we come back ON espn fifteen Thirty Cincinnati
sports station.
Speaker 7 (59:09):
You've been listening to football in THE nati ON espn fifteen,

(01:01:00):
is following us starting at six right here ON espn fifteen.
Thirty friend of mine And jones On baseball coming up
in just about fifteen. Minutes On, wednesdays we talked sports
and money with someone who's a fan of. BOTH i
Am Amy. Wager Dean Dorton Wealth. Management it's good to have.
Speaker 9 (01:01:18):
You good to me here you, know years, Ago i've
been on radio in since study for a while, now
we started talking about cutting the.
Speaker 6 (01:01:26):
Cord, YEAH i mean how.
Speaker 9 (01:01:27):
Much you, know the insanity of how much your cable bill.
Costs and everyone was, like, oh give Me, netflix, right Like,
netflix what was it, like probably nine ninety nine to
twelve ninety nine a. Month at the, time you could, Passwords,
yes you shared passwords like. Boom you were rolling in
money because you weren't spending it on cable.
Speaker 3 (01:01:44):
Anymore, well times have.
Speaker 9 (01:01:46):
CHANGED i, mean it is actually. Insane And forbes has
done research on. This kiplinger's has done research on.
Speaker 3 (01:01:54):
This the cost to.
Speaker 9 (01:01:55):
Be a sports fan and this is not even, listen
going to the, games only trying to watch your favorite
team from your home and the cost of. That And
i've seen anywhere from six hundred to over one thousand.
Dollars and by the, way that's just for THE. Nfl
well THE, nfl let's, see just to try to watch The, BENGALS.
Speaker 4 (01:02:17):
I gotta have obviously have to have access to the local, networks.
Speaker 3 (01:02:20):
Right, yes so local.
Speaker 9 (01:02:22):
Networks one streaming service Carries thursday. Nights Amazon Amazon one
has access to Only Christmas day, games so if you
want to watch actual games On, christmas, Yes sunday Nights.
Speaker 4 (01:02:37):
PEACOCK, nbc but they put a playoff game On peacock.
Speaker 9 (01:02:40):
Exactly so we have just named four to five different
streaming services that you need to.
Speaker 3 (01:02:47):
Have in order to watch just The.
Speaker 9 (01:02:49):
Bengals now we're not even talking about The reds and
the nightmare that exists if you're trying to watch The.
REDS i was thinking about this when you AND i
started talking about the fact that we need to be
talking about this on this. Show right When Hubert, wagner my,
Grandpa Hubert hubert's, yes from his living room In, Southgate,
kentucky would watch literally every Single Red scheme by clicking
(01:03:15):
the dial on the ginormous wooden box that was in
their living. ROOM i can't imagine at that time he
would have ever thought that he may not be able
to live in Northern kentucky and access easily.
Speaker 3 (01:03:29):
All of The Red. Schames here's a. Reference this is
a deep cut for Your Northern.
Speaker 4 (01:03:33):
Kentuckians sports channel was on CHANNEL b six on store.
Cable you had the little brown, box a little, slide,
YEAH b. Six to this, DAY i remember, That.
Speaker 9 (01:03:43):
Oh my, GOSH i remember the. BOX i don't remember
the exact, channel but it's so interesting how as, consumers,
right we start to think like what we're doing now
is so bad that the next thing is going to
be so much, better and extreaming has a little bit
gotten out of. CONTROL i was talking to a couple
of my nephews this, week, Right so they are from,
here Northern, kentucky and now they live In. Colorado one's In,
(01:04:06):
denver ones In. Vail die Hard reds, fans die Hard bengals.
Fans they have, tried like they s flick costs with
other people in order to get some kind of Pirated
Cincinnati reds' it's it's. Insanity and the lit'tle talk about
finding one bar within an hour of where they live
where they can go and watch A bengals, game by the,
(01:04:27):
way without. Volume because so it's getting more and more
difficult as fans to be able to afford to watch
our favorite.
Speaker 3 (01:04:35):
Teams SO i here's HOW i look at. It if
you love one, sport, right you, KNOW i love THE.
Speaker 4 (01:04:43):
Nfl all, Right you're gonna have to subscribe to a
lot of, stuff but it's one.
Speaker 3 (01:04:47):
Sport but then there are those of us, yes who
love a lot of.
Speaker 4 (01:04:50):
Sports so Like I've i've got to have something that
allows me to get the fan duel sports. Network, yeah
maybe it's direct, consumer maybe it's on a cable. Service
i'm AN nba. Fan they're putting games On amazon and On. Peacock,
great gotta have both those. Services i'm a HUGE uc basketball.
Fan i've got to have access to the streaming games
ON Espn plus they're putting games On peacock.
Speaker 3 (01:05:12):
Now also the.
Speaker 9 (01:05:14):
About, golf what about TENNIS Fc cincinnati?
Speaker 4 (01:05:16):
Games, yes i gotta Have APPLE tv multiple times this
year IF i wanted to watch The reds ON tv
on A friday, night have to Have APPLE. Tv by the,
way they've had a game On roku this, year and
so like there's a there's a part of me that's like, enough, yes,
enough and like, plus you, KNOW i gotta Have Disney
plus for my. Daughter my wife has to have access
(01:05:39):
To bravo and all those awful shows she. Watches and
so LIKE i have said to, myself Like i'm not
Getting peacock, Man, like somebody gave me their log in
SO i could watch a Big eiast tournament.
Speaker 3 (01:05:49):
Game. Enough, Yeah and so with the cable.
Speaker 4 (01:05:53):
Thing with regional sports, networks we used to ask when's
the bubble gonna? Burst AND i wonder the same thing
for sports fans comes to.
Speaker 9 (01:06:00):
Streaming, yeah AND i think there are some things that
you can do to try to keep it under. Control
BUT i agree with.
Speaker 3 (01:06:06):
You if you want to wal watch.
Speaker 9 (01:06:08):
Multiple sporting, events you're not like.
Speaker 3 (01:06:11):
Team or sports.
Speaker 9 (01:06:11):
Specific you, know you could spend upwards of several thousand.
Dollars so first of, all you got to track what
you're actually. Spending AND i think people have to do
that research just a little bit of a like audit
once a year how much you're actually. Spending you can
a little bit play the game of, tracking Like i'm
going to keep this for six months and then cancel.
(01:06:33):
It but, listen you got to put all that in your.
Phone you can put reminders in your. Phone, okay at
the end of the season In, February i'm going to
unsubscribe From. PEACOCK i, mean you're going to have to manage.
It it's going to actually take some. Time it is
not like paying your. Cables that's what they.
Speaker 4 (01:06:49):
Thrive, on, Right, yeah BECAUSE i Got peacock to watch
a playoff game two years.
Speaker 3 (01:06:54):
Ago and you still have?
Speaker 4 (01:06:55):
It WHAT i got rid of it finally BECAUSE i
did What i'm supposed to. Do and it's, like let
me see in his most people. Don't and then AND
i borrowed someone else's login to watch The xavier game last.
Speaker 3 (01:07:05):
Year but like that's that's where they get. People, yeah
like there's a.
Speaker 4 (01:07:08):
Lot my mother in law Got netflix For christmas last
year because she knew we wanted to watch the game On, christmas,
yeah or else.
Speaker 3 (01:07:14):
We weren't coming.
Speaker 4 (01:07:14):
Over and then like four months, LATER i go over
And netflix is, there and it's, like do you are
you still Watching? Netflix she's, Like, eh not really but
kind of didn't forgot THAT i had? It, yeah have
you been paying for? It that's what they thrive.
Speaker 3 (01:07:25):
On, Absolutely and so WHAT i hear.
Speaker 4 (01:07:27):
Now is, like, well what they're gonna do is come
up with a way to bundle all the streaming. Services
And i'm, like that's a good. IDEA i remember when
that was called cable yes.
Speaker 9 (01:07:34):
Exactly and it's literally like we're going back to where
we started and we were so tired of the cable bill. Initially,
yeah this has gotten out of. Control and you, KNOW
i often talked to my clients about needs versus once,
RIGHT i think most people who live here would say
it is an absolute need to be able to watch
The Cincinnati bengals And Cincinnati Red BUT i think you
(01:07:55):
have to understand at what cost is that. Coming maybe
you do have to miss a few games this, year
if it means you're paying an extra job two hundred
dollars for streaming service that you're only gonna use a
handful of, TIMES i think you got to be. Creative
you got to figure out who's got what. Service and
maybe it's Like i'm coming to your house for this
game and you're out of my house for this. Game
(01:08:16):
otherwise it can get out of.
Speaker 3 (01:08:18):
Control really.
Speaker 4 (01:08:18):
Cool the one thing THE nfl does well is they
do guarantee that in the individual markets that the games
are available on over the. Year so if The bengals
are On, amazon they'll they'll farm the game out To
channel five and they can carry the. Broadcast, yeah but
Most bengals fans want to watch The steelers and The
ravens and The browns and The chiefs and The bill
and so, again like if you love all, sports if
(01:08:40):
you love an entire, league THE nfl thing is a prime.
Example but THE nba is doing this and the disconcerting
thing for me from that. Perspective AND i know there
are not as MANY nba fans in town AS nfl,
fans but still they're gonna put playoff games On, Amazon
they're gonna put games On. Peacock and the commissioner of
the league was asked about this two weeks ago and
his response was, basically, well you can always catch the
(01:09:02):
highlights On, twitter well.
Speaker 9 (01:09:04):
Number, one and that's your message to your.
Speaker 4 (01:09:06):
Fans it's your message to your fans and the people
who are paying billions to carry entire, games.
Speaker 9 (01:09:11):
Right, yeah it's getting out of. Control we were In
indiana for the first game of The bengals, season, yeah
and we looked in the closest bar That Carrie sunday
ticket was thirty miles.
Speaker 3 (01:09:23):
Away.
Speaker 9 (01:09:24):
Really, Yeah so it's even hard to travel and watch your.
Sports so it is an issue. AGAIN i think you
have to take an audit figure out exactly how much you're.
Paying can you actually afford, that, right you, know and
still retire. Someday.
Speaker 3 (01:09:39):
Ye you gotta get your priorities.
Speaker 4 (01:09:40):

this money grab is making it where people can no
longer afford to watch not even just teams and other,
markets but they're actual hometown, teams and there's something really
wrong with.

The Holy, grail the home of our pregame show On
Bengals sundays before home, games and we put this together
very last. Minute we thank the staff at The Holy
grail for having us and taken such great care of.
Us Richard skinner coming up in about fifteen. Minutes reds
(01:15:23):
And pirates. Tonight the easiest way to frame this game
for me is number, one the first must win game
of the. Season that is maybe not entirely true because
we've kind of framed other games that. WAY i do
not think that The reds can afford to lose ground.
Speaker 3 (01:15:42):
Tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:15:43):
Now, obviously if they win and The mets, win well
you kind of are where you are right, now but
with one less opportunity to gain, GROUND i don't think
that kills. THEM i don't know that we want to
confront The reds having to make up up two games
in four, days and you certainly don't want to put
(01:16:04):
yourself in a.
Speaker 3 (01:16:04):
Position where you can have to go To milwaukee and
sweep The.
Speaker 4 (01:16:08):
Brewers and by the, way now you've got to stave
off The Arizona, diamondbacks who came back from last night
a four run deficit after the sixth sitting to beat
The Dodgers LA's, bullpen by the, way and that's worth
looking at. Too if The reds win the last wildcard,
spot there is a very good chance they would play
The Los Angeles. Dodgers, now The dodgers have tons of star,
(01:16:29):
power Defending World series, champions great, organization big. Payroll their
bullpen is an absolute. MESS i was listening to our
Friend Clinton yates this, Morning Clinton, company which is a
national radio show that actually talks about, baseball which is,
nice and one of the things he was talking about
(01:16:49):
was the absolute mess that THAT la bullpen has turned.
Into if The reds played The, dodgers that is an
area WHERE i think they would.
Speaker 3 (01:16:58):
Have a significant.
Speaker 4 (01:16:59):
Advantage Now LA's offense is better with The reds in any,
series you wonder if they're gonna swing the, Bat but
that's worth paying attention. To we are getting way ahead
of ourselves this one tonight for, me and, look we're
probably gonna say this about tomorrow's, game and then we're
gonna say it about all three days In. MILWAUKEE i
think because of the loss last, night you've kind of
(01:17:20):
put yourself in a position where you really can't afford
to lose any more, games and you certainly can't afford
to fall two back with four to. Go Hunter green
gets the ball. Tonight it's well. ESTABLISHED i think on this,
show what a huge fan of. HIS i am With.
Hunter you got Last thursday Against, chicago he was awesome
(01:17:42):
in a game that kind of felt like The reds
had to have one run of. Support he finishes the,
game he goes the, distance he gives up one. Hit
incredibly impressive. Start the start prior to that, though On
saturday And sacramento against The a's got roughed up a little,
bit didn't get out of the third. Inning so you're
(01:18:04):
being reasonable to a degree if you ask Which Hunter
green do we see? Tonight the big question with this,
team and it's if there's two things we've learned about
The reds through one hundred and fifty seven, games it's
it's these two.
Speaker 3 (01:18:16):
Things number, one do they hit?
Speaker 4 (01:18:20):
Enough and like you, know let's let's be, reasonable let's
be honest about. This the question we had back In
february was are they going to hit? Enough will they hit?
Enough that's why we wondered they did they do enough
to the? Offense did they do enough to the. Outfield
it's what we will wonder In october if they get.
There it's what we're wondering about tonight With Paul skins
(01:18:41):
on the, Mound it's what we're wondering about these final five.
Speaker 3 (01:18:45):
Games will they hit? Enough it was awesome.
Speaker 4 (01:18:49):
That they beat The Chicago cubs in four. Straight two
of those games they won won. Nothing last, night they
scored two, runs they leave runners on, base and five
different innings they hit into double plays to end the, seventh,
eighth and ninth with the tying run at the plate
That matt McClain ground into a fielder's choice on one
(01:19:10):
pitch off a guy making his big league debut in
the sixth last. NIGHT i think there's one, thing AND
i think there are two that we've learned about this
team this year is game to, game series to, series,
heck maybe even inning to. Inning will they hit a
couple of things about tonight's lineup in just a? SECOND
i think the other, thing, though we have learned about this,
(01:19:31):
team and this is more intangible than. Tangible, look, man
what they are is is pretty well. Established they're a
team with good starting. Pitching they're a team that has offensive.
Limitations like that's through one hundred and fifty seven. Games
there's no mystery about what this team. Is but what
they have done over the course of one hundred and
fifty seven games is they have continued to bounce. Back
(01:19:54):
so last, night you, Know i'm walking out of the.
Ballpark they lose the The mets have come. Back at
the time that The reds game, Ended New york was
what was up one in that, game they end up
winning nine to. Seven then about two hours, Later arizona polishes.
Off it's comeback against The, dodgers and it's the worst
possible scenario you can ask. For reds fall Behind New,
(01:20:17):
York arizona pulls, even and so there's a dejection that
sort of hangs in the.
Speaker 3 (01:20:24):
Air there's.
Speaker 4 (01:20:24):
Frustration even chatting with a couple of folks connected to
The reds this, morning the sense of missed opportunity and
the air coming out of the. Balloon, look, MAN i
don't know if they're gonna catch The. METS i don't
know if they're gonna win the game. TONIGHT i do think,
though that after one hundred and fifty seven, games even
(01:20:45):
understanding that they.
Speaker 3 (01:20:46):
Don't have much.
Speaker 4 (01:20:47):
Time if there's one other thing we've learned about this
team is they're pretty good at picking themselves off the.
Mat they're pretty good at when it feels like a
game has delivered a bit of a knockout blow of,
rebounding and SO i know they have an uphill battle
With Paul. SKEINS i know on a night in a
(01:21:10):
night out, basis you never know if they're gonna. Hit
but if the big takeaway from last night was that's
the beginning of the, END i could end up being
dead wrong about. THIS i refuse to subscribe to that
BECAUSE i think this team has EARNED i don't know
an element of trust that they will bounce, back and
so we'll see if they do. TONIGHT a couple of
(01:21:31):
things about the lineup this. Evening So ellie de La
cruz was awesome last. Night he's batting. Fifth i've kind
of changed my mind from HOW i felt about this
at about two forty this, Afternoon i'd Hit ellie as
high in the order as. Possible it's sort of it
finally feels Like ellie is swinging the bat. Well he looks,
comfortable he looks, healthy he looks. Energetic so he's done
(01:21:52):
with a quad All over the last couple of, months
the quad issue has affected, him and it's you, know
everybody has acknowledged that he's looks uncomfortable at the.
Speaker 3 (01:22:02):
Plate he hasn't looked like.
Speaker 4 (01:22:04):
HIMSELF i think we all know there's a basic look
To Ellie Dela cruz when he has at his. BEST
i just say this About Joey. VADA i watched probably
ninety percent Of Joey evado's swings.
Speaker 3 (01:22:13):
In the big.
Speaker 4 (01:22:14):
LEAGUES i know when he's locked, in AND i know
when he looks, really really. UNCOMFORTABLE i think With Ellie
Dela cruz there's something similar. There you know what he
looks like when he's locked. In you know what he
looks like when he's. Comfortable you know what he looks
like when he's feeling, right when he's locked in at the.
Plate he certainly did last. Night by the, way he
was also awesome in the. Field now that you've got,
(01:22:35):
THAT i don't think there's any reason to not hit
him in the top three in the batting.
Speaker 3 (01:22:39):
ORDER i would hit him. Third, FRANKLY i might hit
him even.
Speaker 4 (01:22:42):
Higher to, me you have to assume that you're probably
not gonna get a ton of hits. Tonight it's a
very good chance that if you get to that fifth
time through the batting, order you're not gonna get beyond
spots one through. Three i'm not sure how deep you're
gonna get into the batting order if you get into
it a fourth. TIME i want to increase the opportunities
(01:23:06):
That Ellie Dela cruz has to come to the. PLATE
i am looking for homers this.
Speaker 3 (01:23:11):
Evening.
Speaker 4 (01:23:11):
Now they went up Against Paul skeens back In august
and he gave up seven hits that. Day they were all.
Singles he is just not the kind of guy and
he might not pitch the entire. Game in, fact he's.
Not he might not pitch beyond five, innings.
Speaker 3 (01:23:26):
But he is gonna be in.
Speaker 4 (01:23:27):
THERE i think he's gonna be hard to string together
a couple of hits consecutively. AGAINST i think he kind
of have to go hunting for. Homers not that you
want every guy up there trying to hit the ball
out of the, park but you do play in a
hitter friendly. Park you've got a guy In ellie who
feels like he's locked. In Sal stewart's a home run.
(01:23:48):
Threat Tyler stevenson more so Than Jose. Travino so the
good news Is steven Sal stewart is playing right. Now
Key Brian hayes looks lost at the. Plate Tyler stevenson
is more of a power threat than Than Jose. Travigno
Will benson is. PLAYING i would Take Gavin lux who's batting,
third and hit him beneath all of those. Guys not
(01:24:09):
That gavin can't hit a home, run but he's homer
in one percent of his plate. Appearances every single one
of those other GUYS i just mentioned homer with more.
FREQUENCY i think you have to build the lineup tonight
around the long, ball because, two even if their solo,
jobs may do it for. You we will see six
forty tonight's first, pitch seven hundred W. Welw if you missed,
(01:24:32):
it you'll hear my conversation from earlier with the voice
of The, Reds Tommy, thrall coming up in just about twenty.
Minutes sixteen minutes after five. O'clock we're here at The Holy,
ground Downtown, cincinnati directly across the street FROM. GABP i
did the segment earlier on. ATTENDANCE i don't THINK i
need to do another. One if the big takeaway from
(01:24:54):
last night was the size of the, CROWD i ain't
the GUY i can't help you call in after the
game tonight on extra.
Speaker 3 (01:25:01):
Innings Richard skinner is going to join. Us. Next we're

Grail Richard skinner is with us as he is Every
wednesday From local twelve And local twelve dot. Com i'm
broadcasting across the street From Great America, Ballpark. Skinny the
last TIME i did, THAT i was on a different
radio station talking with you about how The reds had
to win that series against The, mets had to sweep.
Speaker 3 (01:26:24):
It they lost that. Night we thought the season was.
Over point were we? Wrong yes we.
Speaker 10 (01:26:30):
Were but here we are again with the game behind
the met and you're, Thinking, okay The pirates were in.
Town everything's. Rolling they lose last. NIGHT i was listening
to you As i'm driving after Your neck of The
woods got high school actually and your Old neck of The,
woods And i'm with. You you have to win, tonight have.
Speaker 3 (01:26:48):
To you can't lose. Ground you can't go two, back
four to.
Speaker 4 (01:26:52):
Go the math then gets especially If arizona also, wins
the math gets really really.
Speaker 10 (01:26:57):
Hard there are ones that scared me the most the.
Speaker 4 (01:27:00):
Moment, yeah, YEAH i trust The cobs more THAN i
do The, dodgers.
Speaker 10 (01:27:07):
Exactly The dodgers are a. MESS i, mean for all
the towels they, have their bullpen is an absolute train.
Wreck there's no question about. THAT i will say. THIS
i am glad tonight that he puts South stewart in the. Lineup,
yes you know what you can always do you're you're
allowed to build a lead with offense and then put
a defensive guy. In you, know you're allowed to do.
Speaker 4 (01:27:26):
That it happens often late in defensive, REPLACEMENT i think
is what it's called defensive.
Speaker 10 (01:27:32):
Caddie they call that, person and you know, what That's
Brian hayes in a.
Speaker 4 (01:27:35):
Nutshell i'm good with that exactly exactly what is what
is the most reasonable way to react to what you
witnessed On sunday In minneapolis.
Speaker 10 (01:27:47):
That this team has. ISSUES i think that's a fair
thing to look at if you're a, fan especially running
the ball and defensively they still have. Lapses BUT i
don't think it means the season's. Over you, know this
is A vikings team that. Lost this is how crazy
THE nfl is most you know. It The vikings lost
(01:28:07):
To atlanta the game before twenty two to. Six lanterns
around and goes To, carolina which we can argue is
one of the five worst teams in THE nfl and
get shut out thirty to. Nothing The Cleveland browns are
a mess of a. Team Green bay is kind of
a sheet, ship cheap kick whether to win The Super,
bowl and they go there and lose thirteen to. Ten
weird things happened in this. League and when you turn
(01:28:28):
it over five, times and you've got a couple of
reliable guys who turned it. Over Jamark case never.
Speaker 3 (01:28:32):
Fumbled he fumbled five.
Speaker 10 (01:28:33):
TIMES i think in his. Career Tama Jp ryan got
his sun. Broken that's why he's. Fumbled so just weird
things kind of escalated In. Snowballs now The row issues
you can't run the. Ball you still as much AS
i Like jake, nine and the jury still is very
much out On Jake. Crown and again go back to
the defensive side of. Things is this defense good enough
to get stopped where he's just gonna have to hopefully
(01:28:54):
get a couple Of? Jakeaways and guess what they didn't
get up In minnesota, today got No.
Speaker 4 (01:28:57):
JAKEAWAY i know you're you're exactly right how much because
the conversation instantly, becomes, well this is why they need another. Quarterback,
Look Jake browning wasn't. Awesome nobody would say he.
Speaker 3 (01:29:10):
Is he is a.
Speaker 4 (01:29:11):
Backup his floor is lower than it would be for a,
starter much less a guy Like Joe. Burrow WHEN i
think of that game On, sunday, THOUGH i don't think
of of necessarily completely in that quarterback. Play how much
of that do you put On sunday specifically.
Speaker 3 (01:29:25):
On jake twenty?
Speaker 10 (01:29:29):
PERCENT i mean he's. Culpable he threw a picktick for goodness,
sake so he's. Culpable but that first half, though AND
i Think i've got this number right BECAUSE i put
it in the story my announcement he's at the. GAME
i think there were third and five or longer on
all seven third downs in the thirty back and most
of those are like thirty seven third and eight thirty.
TEN i don't know any quarterback that can live in
(01:29:49):
that territory on the road against that kind of a,
defense which is going to send a bunch of guys
at you in. Waves and SO i again the throw
that he threw on the pick. Stick he even, SAID
i need to learn how to throw it. AWAY i
need to just live for all, right, man live and.
Learn i'm gonna let you do. That and it wasn't
an awful decison because there actually were two receivers break
(01:30:10):
nope and the ball back. Tip but still he probably
should have sewn that one. Away you get points, there
you know you're driving down seventeen to, three AND i
don't know No a fans enough to know he's a fumbler or.
Not for the heck of a play By Isaiah. Rodgers you,
know you get points there at seventeen six or seventeen,
ten and you get the ball come out of the second.
Half who knows where that game goes instead of when
snowball snowball, Snowball and you look, up it's, like wait a,
(01:30:31):
minute they scored seventeen points in a minute forty seven.
Seconds that's that's happened in this.
Speaker 3 (01:30:34):
League but he.
Speaker 4 (01:30:35):
Did how do you is there a scheme that exists
for a better running game behind an offensive line filled
with guys who aren't great round.
Speaker 10 (01:30:45):
Blockers that's a great question because they've got to figure this.
OUT i, mean The zach sounded like he was, puzzled
and he shouldn't. Be you, know you, know you go,
HONESTLY I zudi just sounds instead of going with a heavy,
package and they went with you, know No fan And
Cam grandy more Than Mike kasiki On. Sunday maybe the
snapcount doesn't show that all told Because noah got, hurt
(01:31:06):
but that's what basically it. Was was two tight ends
two wide receivers for the most. Part you, KNOW i
get you're trying to put more big bodies in. There
maybe you better off just putting four wide receivers and
spreading things out and going you're gonna have to cover
somebody man to man and you're gonna have to light
in the. Box it's not and run into a lighter.
Box because when teams are putting a bunch of dudes
at the line of scrimmage because you know you're you're
(01:31:26):
you're beast it up with two tight, ENDS i think
that's probably a recipe for. DISASTER i get why they do.
It you, Know Eric hall was so good last year
in that role as a second tight, end especially coming
in motion and just a physical. GUY i still Know
Noah fan And Cam brandy are that just and again
you're putting a bunch of dudes in the box where
you're not getting much moving off the line of. Scrimmage
maybe you just go back to, saying you know, what
(01:31:48):
we are a past first. Team we're gonna run out of,
this but we're gonna spread you. Out we're gonna put
four wide. Receivers maybe THE sicki qualifies as a wide,
receiver but he spreads, Out so you're spreading people. OUT
i think that's the only way BECAUSE i JUST i

Here you. KNOW I i hope tonight's crowd matches the
energy that that we had last. Night but that crowd
last night like it was ready to, explode unfortunately because
of the offense.
Speaker 3 (01:37:21):
It did that place that it.
Speaker 4 (01:37:25):
WAS i said it on the air last, NIGHT i, said,
look size, wise this isn't the biggest crowd all. Year,
yeah but it's one of the best crowds all. YEAR i,
mean they were into. It you could you could feel the.
Excitement they just never quite got that. Moment it felt
like every time The reds were getting, close they get
into a double play there, late and.
Speaker 3 (01:37:43):
It's just it's that's. Tough that's, baseball you. Know but
you know what we've got something to root for right.
Speaker 4 (01:37:48):
Now it's awesome we do and, like all, right last
night was worst case because what happens In chicago and In.
Phoenix but if there's one thing this team this season
has taught, us it's right. Right when they punch in the,
right when they get punched in the, guy they come
off the, canvas which is WHY i expect them the win.
Speaker 3 (01:38:04):
Tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:38:05):
Tommy, look i, mean what was It? September was It september?
Sixth they were six. Out it's really hard to make
up six games In, september especially when the team in
front of you has an astronomical payroll and they're The
New York. Mets, well lo and behold they overcame. That
now it's one game at the. Time it's been one
(01:38:26):
game at a time all. Year but it really. IS i,
mean it's day by day all you have to. Do
it takes one win and one loss by The, mets
and then The reds are right back in that.
Speaker 3 (01:38:35):
SPOT i, mean it's just it's what it's all.
Speaker 4 (01:38:38):
About but that it just shows you that this, team
no matter what kind of blows they, take they can
get right back. Up they're gonna come right back at
you the next. Day that's what this team's done all year.
Long i've told, PEOPLE i feel like they've done a
pretty good. JOB i mean there's still peaks and, valleys
but they're not like they. WERE i, mean look at the.
Season there hasn't been any extended losing. Streak there's been
(01:39:01):
an extended stretch where maybe they've they've lost, several but that.
Consecutively they've just been able to get the wins here and,
there even in a tough, stretch to keep from stringing
together long losing. Streaks look at The, Mets, YEAH i
THINK i saw. Today they've had three losing streaks over
six or seven. Games there's only been one other team
that made the playoffs that's endured what they. Have The
(01:39:22):
reds haven't gone through, that they haven't had the long winning,
streaks but that they've played that they stay and remain right,
there and that's what they've. Done that's what's put them
in this. Position you're more qualified to speak to this than.
Anybody you spend time With Terry francona one on one every.
Day to me as an, outsider that's The francona, effect,
(01:39:44):
right and the message all season long has. Been we
may have lost, Yesterday, fine what are we doing? Today
where he gets a question about something that may happen
the next, series don't, Know let's win.
Speaker 3 (01:39:55):
Today that sounds it sounds.
Speaker 4 (01:39:57):
CLICHE i think with this team with it's, MAKEUP i
think that message has.
Speaker 3 (01:40:01):
Helped it's not just a, message it's the way they
go about.
Speaker 4 (01:40:05):
IT i mean that it's. REAL i, mean first of,
all it is. Real he said it in his press
conference when he was named. Manager, LOOK i like to
wake up every day and figure out how we're going
to beat that team that. Day and that's what he.
Does he takes it day by. Day All, right yesterday's,
done it's over. With you can't change. It how do
we win? Today maybe it doesn't look, good but let's
(01:40:27):
figure it. Out let's figure out how the puzzle fits
together so that it at the end of the day
it ends with A reds. Win, look this guy knows
how to handle people as well as Anybody i've ever
been around in my. LIFE i, mean this guy is. Incredible,
tito is it to? Me he is a big reason
(01:40:48):
why this team is in the position that they're in
right now to have. SUCCESS i asked him AND i think,
this this exemplifies, it maybe as well AS i can put.
IT i asked him one day when the energy was
a little. Low the team had been dragging a little.
Bit they were in a tough. Stretch it was one
of those long stretches where it's just. Exhausting, yeah and
the season grinds on you a little. BIT i, said all,
(01:41:09):
right in a stretch like, this BECAUSE i REMEMBER i
was BEAT i MEAN i was worn. DOWN i, said
If i'm worn, down they've gotta be warned. Out how
do you get the energy up in a stretch like,
this because you can't just walk around and, go, hey
let's go get it doesn't work that, Way like that's
a tired. Act after a, while he, goes, LOOK i
think it comes down to really pressing upon the. Coaches,
(01:41:34):
look we've got to have some energy in everything we,
do in all the, pregame in the pregame, meetings in
the pregame. Work just make, sure as coaches you have
your energy up and hopefully that permeates the entire, clubhouse
that rubs off on all the, players and that just
lifts collectively the energy of the. Room and when he said,
(01:41:55):
it it's so, simple but it makes so much. Sense,
yeah and that's that's the way to do. It AND
i think that's that's the effect that he has on this,
organization this this.
Speaker 3 (01:42:04):
TEAM i said this to.
Speaker 4 (01:42:06):
You in spring, training you know when When Tito francona,
RETIRED i listened to every podcast BECAUSE i just love
listening to him.
Speaker 3 (01:42:13):
Talk And i'm, LIKE i envy your.
Speaker 4 (01:42:15):
Job could you get a chance to sit in there
with them on air and off every?
Speaker 3 (01:42:19):
Day what's that?
Speaker 4 (01:42:20):
Been?
Speaker 1 (01:42:20):
Like it's.
Speaker 4 (01:42:20):
AWESOME I, mean first of, all the stories are. Tremendous
you get them going About Michael, jordan and just your
jaw hits.
Speaker 3 (01:42:29):
The, floor like, WOW i mean he's actually close With Michael.
Speaker 4 (01:42:32):
Jordan, yeah and he's got some great, stories stories about
His Red sox, days interacting with with the just all
the stories that you, hear and then through that you
really just feel his love of the, game his love of,
baseball his love of. Competing and then you get into, all,
right how do you win? Today and then you get
(01:42:52):
into the weeds that you can't really do on the
air because you only have four, minutes so it's kind
of you start to get into the, weeds and then
you just you walk away almost daily learning something because.
Speaker 3 (01:43:04):
This guy knows more about.
Speaker 4 (01:43:05):
BASEBALL i, mean he's forgotten more about the game than
you'll ever. Know and it's just it's incredible his wealth
of knowledge about.
Speaker 3 (01:43:15):
Baseball so it's it's.
Speaker 4 (01:43:16):
FUN i, mean is it is everything you hope for
in this job to be around somebody like that decision he's.
Speaker 3 (01:43:22):
Made that's been under the.
Speaker 4 (01:43:23):
Microscope Is hunter pitches, tonight not last Night brady? Singer
he at least gave him length because you, Know i'm
thinking in the second inning last, night like oh, boy
parade of, relievers and then that's going to catch up
to him over the next six. Days So hunter's going
to pitch. Tonight if one sixty two, matters it's going
to Be brady's. Singer then we'll see how they manage.
It your thoughts on on the Way tito made the
(01:43:45):
decision and how this may. Unfold, look he talked about it.
Yesterday he, Goes, LOOK i can't explain. Everything sometimes there's
elements of decisions that have to be made that can't
necessarily be. PUBLIC i think is the way he put,
IT i get it. Well first of, ALL i think
given A hunter an extra day to go today is,
(01:44:05):
good especially after he went the distance his last time.
Out he's battled injuries a couple of times this. Year
make sure he's one hundred percent, healthy and the advantage
of all of it is sure he's not Available game
one sixty, two but he's available game one of the.
Postseason but, again you have to Make BUT i don't
know that's not one of those. Things because the pitching
(01:44:27):
has been so good THAT i think you're you're in
a pretty good spot no matter who you're running out
there In game one sixty. TWO i, mean like you,
said it's gonna Be Brady singer, now a little bump
in the road, yesterday but look at the way he's been.
Pitching he has been. Brilliant he's a veteran. GUY i
don't think that's a bad guy to have out there
in that. Situation shame of last night's result is if
(01:44:47):
they win that. Game the story last night and today
Is Ellie Dela cruz in the biggest game of the,
season in during what has been a tough last two
months for, him shines. Bright, yeah, well look at his
NUMB i, MEAN i think when you take a step
back at the end of the, year and you look
at the numbers that he is put together throughout the
course of the, season you'll be pretty impressed with the.
(01:45:09):
YEAR i, mean it's still gonna look like a pretty good.
Year but that is despite having a couple of really rough,
months and make no mistake about, it they have been
very unelly. Like but we all know that he's capable
of taking. Off and if he's, tay if this is
the beginning of him taking off here for the last
six games of the, season.
Speaker 3 (01:45:29):
He's the type of guy that can carry a. Team,
yea and, boy that would be.
Speaker 4 (01:45:33):
Great yesterday was the best he's looked in the last
two months by, far played like a, star outstanding in
the field at the. Play you're, RIGHT i mean it was.
Great and so you, know he gets on the ninth
inning And i'm, like if they win this, game that's
what we're talking, about, right and instead it's a. Footnote,
yeah it's it's too, bad but you know, what like
we talked about, earlier it's a new. Day hopefully that's
(01:45:54):
a good sign that he's getting going again because what
he did, yesterday in my mind at, least And i'll
talk To tea do about.
Speaker 3 (01:46:00):
It here in a little.
Speaker 4 (01:46:01):
Bit but what he did last night is he re
established himself as a presence in the middle of the. Lineup,
yeah you didn't have to really worry about him much
in the lineup the last couple of. Months now that's
in the pirate's. Mind he's not back up to, third
but he's still hitting. Cleanup. Uh that's that is a
huge asset for this team to have him in the
middle of the order hitting like, that and hopefully he
(01:46:23):
backs it up again tonight and, gosh IT'S i think tonight.
Speaker 6 (01:46:27):
Has a chance to be an incredible.
Speaker 3 (01:46:29):
Environment hopefully mother nature.
Speaker 4 (01:46:30):
COOPERATES i hope so special pitching matchup a lot of.
STAKES i know you have stuff to, do So i'll
