Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jay Morrison's with US Pro Football Network covers the Bengals
on X at by Jay Morrison and joins us for
a few minutes every single Thursday. Jay is Jamar Chase
back in practice today?
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Yeah, he was at practice. Normally, we get the injury
at four twenty right before I jump on with you there,
it's coming at four twenty five today. But Jamar did
practice today. He talked after practice like he normally does
on a Thursday. He said his shoulder is great, and
players never lie about those kind of things, so all
(00:36):
systems go. But seriously, it doesn't seem like that big
of a deal. If it was an issue, I'm guessing
he may not have wanted to talk today, but I
don't know for sure. To me, it looked like it
happened on that play in the low red zone when
he was trying to drag three guys into the end
zone and they're kind of holding him up and he
got popped a couple of times. But it doesn't seem
(00:56):
like it's going to be an issue for Sunday.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Is it boring on the job now? Give and the
fact the guys aren't going to be talking trash for
a while.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
That's exactly what today was. They were all on their
best behavior. Here on the best behavior. Nobody wanted to
do anything on the bulletin board. Cam Taylor Brick declined.
He said he had to get into the training room
and get some treatment. Jamar did talk, but he was
very vanilla, didn't have a whole lot to say. He
was even asked about the Carolina defense. He paused for
a little bit and then he kind of like decided
(01:26):
he didn't need to say what he wanted to say
and was a complimentary of them. I think they all
understand number one, Zach wasn't happy with Cam Taylor Brick's
comments last week, but they also understand the Rowing three,
and you just can't You can't talk that talk when
you row and three go out win a couple of
games and then they can get back to their personalities.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Well, I'm in the content business, and so I disagree.
I think there should be more talking. I think I
think that somebody should have violated whatever Zach wanted to
do and said something interesting. But I don't get my wish.
Do you think this team, you know, there's been a
lot of talk and this was I think it's a
natural byproduct of how the game unfolded in the oh
and three start. So we start talking a lot about leadership.
You've been around this team for for quite a while.
(02:07):
Do you think there's a leadership problem or a lack thereof.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yeah, I don't know. It's hard to tell because we
don't We don't see those conversations or hear those conversations.
You just see what's going on out on the field.
And I do think there's a lack of a grab
the team by the throat type of guy that's going
to stand up and give the fiery speeches. And you know,
Burrow even said that yesterday that that's not him. It's
never been him, it's not going to be him. He
(02:32):
talked about how great J. T. Barrett was at Ohio
State when he was there, and how how incredible his
pregame speeches were. I don't know if you need that.
These guys are professionals. You should get yourself ready to play.
But when things do go south, I do think you
need someone to step up and pick their spots and
you know, say something in front of the team. If
you're if your rob rat all the time, I think
(02:54):
that wears thin and it kind of gets the eye rolls.
But when you're someone like who Burrowed does that. He
picks his spots and when he talks, people listen. But
I think you've got really good leaders on the seam.
I just think they're all the same kind of leader,
and you don't have the super vocal one. Maybe that's
what's lacking.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Is the defense fixable?
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, I think it is. I think Lou has enough
of a track record that when you get some of
these guys back, it's gonna look better. I don't know
how soon they're gonna get j Hill or Sheldon Rankins back,
but you know, McKinley Jackson is eligible to come back
next week for Week five against Baltimore. Miles Murphy's eligible.
(03:39):
I don't know that that's gonna happen. But they've got guys,
you know, Lou call it the cavalry. They've got guys
coming in and I think that's gonna make a big difference.
And you just wonder how healthy Sam Hubbard really is.
And last week we saw Cederick Johnson, the sixth round pick.
The rookie got ten snaps. He he played pretty well.
His first his first snap, he gets to tackle, his
(04:01):
second snap, he kind of helps a pass rush and
they get a sack. He didn't get the sack, but
the team did, so I think you're going to see
a lot more of him. It's it's if D line
is the issue. I think the secondary is going to
be fine. I think Jermaine Pratt and and Wilson are
fine as the linebackers, but the D line is the
big issue. They've got to get more pressure. And you
just when you look the way it's constructed right now,
(04:22):
you don't see where it's going to come from besides
Trey Hendrickson.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
You know, you mentioned the secondary, and yeah, you know,
if we're to assigned blame, we're starting up front. It
is it's kind of striking how out of out of
favored Jordan Battle is. Why is that the case?
Speaker 2 (04:40):
I just think that it's it's lou has said it before.
It's not a position where you're going to rotate guys.
And they brought von Bell here to fix the communication
issues and all the breakdown, and it always felt like
there was a chance that that Vaughn would come in
things settled, and then you start maybe seeing Jordan Battle
(05:04):
push him for playing time and and and see the younger,
faster guy to kind of take over that role once
Bond got everything in place and the communication issues have
gotten better. But at zero to three, I just can't
see putting a young person, a young player or second
year player like Jordan Battle in there when Von Bell
(05:24):
really hasn't been the problem. He hasn't been great, but
he hasn't been the issue back there, and they they
need that traffic cop back there. They've they've got to
keep that there isn't it. Like you said, there is
no pass rush, So it's more important on that back
end not to let breakdowns happen. And that's what Bonn
Bell was brought here for until until Jordan Ball can
get on the field. I just I don't know. I
(05:46):
just don't see that happening yet after the after halfway through,
maybe Jordan Ball gets some more playing time.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Yeah, I know, there's only a chunk of practice that
you're allowed to see. Do we do we think they've
worked at all on stopping a tackle from catching a
pass near the goal line.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Let's hope I actually looked this up. I mentioned it
on the podcast today. The NFL record for most six
six touchdowns allowed in the season is two The Bengals
are currently tied for the NFL record. They got fourteen
games left to break it by allowing another one. Only
three teams have given up. I guess you say tackle
(06:25):
eligible big guy touchdowns in back to back weeks. So yeah,
I think they'll be looking for that if Carolina sends
in a tackle eligible summer.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Wow. All right, even more drama than was already baked in.
Thank you as always, Jay, I appreciate it. All right.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Good talking to you more.
