Speaker 1 (00:00):
For years on this show on Wednesdays, we've talked about
the Bengals with our friend Richard Skinner from Local twelve
and Local twelve dot com and Local twelve Skinny, and
that continues. He's back with us for like year number
I don't know what's it been, twelve thirteen years? Thank you, Richard?

Speaker 2 (00:16):
How are you? You're gazillion? How are you moo?

Speaker 1 (00:21):
I'm sure sometimes talking to me, it does feel like
you're gazillion, But thank you for joining us.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Nonetheless, always happy.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
The last last box they had to check it the
offseason because we you know, you've heard this, maybe the
Bengals have a hard time starting fast. Was all right,
They've got to get to the gate unscathed. Nobody's on
the injury report. There is therefore no excuse to lose
to the Browns.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
No, that's fair, and that's to say, I mean, listen,
you know the change in training camp practice time and
the fact of starters played in the preseason. Okay, that
was probably an homage to the slow start, but the
slow start really can be circled into one thing, Joe
Burrow dealing with COVID and a rookie season. Then Joe
Burrow dealing with seeing ghosts because he was coming back
to the major d surgery. Then Joe Burrow having an

(01:05):
appendect toy, and then Joe Burrow having a calf issue,
and then Joe Burrow. We weren't sure what the risk
was like. And it's literally been something every year, and
then you pile on top of it a Jamar Chase
issue last year. But this year, no, there are no excuses,
and I think I think they fully expect to hit
the ground running. You know, you've got some reps in
preseason look pretty good, doing so offensively, not so much defensively,

(01:25):
but offensively. You did you know the band's back together.
You know, he got really added a ton of new
pieces other than the two guards, and certainly one of
those we probably both of those. I guess we should
question at the moment till we see them play. But no,
there's this year, there's literally no excuse.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Is Dalton Riisner going to be a starting guard of
this team by like week three?

Speaker 2 (01:47):
I would say if Lucas Patrick doesn't get hurt. No,
I think if Lucas Patrick gets hurt, that's when we'll
see Riisner. I could be completely wrong, you know, maybe
Lucas Patrick is just as bad as some of the
reps he took in the preseason. He didn't take all
batter I mean they scored on what three of the
four possessions he was in in the preseason or two
of the three, whatever it was, so they weren't completely
a dud. But yeah, I mean, I don't think you

(02:08):
bring Dalton Reisner here. You bring him here kind of
as an emergency, Like if this guy is a dud
or gets hurt, we at least got a veteran who started.
I mean, I know people are annoying Dalton as a
as a Hall of Famer already and all those things
due was due was. Dude was on the street until
literally the last week before the regular season week started.
And there's a lot of teams, the best Bengols fans

(02:28):
think you're the only team that's looking for offensive line help.
Get your head out of the sand man. There is
probably every team not named the Philadelphia Eagles could use
some offensive line help, and yet all of them balked so,
and I was, I'm not going to signing. It's a
veteran who we've been on winning the teams, who's done
some good things. I just don't think that was a
plug and play guy. I don't think that was ever
the option. This is what Lucas is bad. We're not
going to really want to turn to another rookie and

(02:49):
Jalen Rivers. We want to turn to a veteran, and
that's why they signed adult roster.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
It is still remarkable to me that here we said
on the Wednesday before the opener, and and they've gotten
so much stuff done, right, say what you want about
the Trey Hendrickson contract and how it unfolded and maybe
what it should look like. The dude's gonna play against
the Browns and Shamar Stewart's gonna play against the Browns
and they're healthy. I just I can't believe we were
sitting here on Wednesday before the first game and this

(03:15):
team has gone eight months without adding anybody at safety.
How about you?

Speaker 2 (03:20):
I know that that was something that me when when
it got to you know, right up to the draft
and they hadn't addressed the free agency, it almost felt like, well,
Malachi starts for Nicko, Ma Laurie, one of those two
guys is gonna get bag. I mean, it just they
got to get a safety, and they did it came
and went, Okay, that's fine, there's another way in free
agency coming, they'll get that safety. Then and it came
and went and got nothing. And here we sit with,

(03:41):
you know, two guys coming off shaky seasons, and Geno
Stone and uh and Jordan Battle and Gino got hurt
for a bit in the preseason. He's obviously healthy now.
But if one of those two goes down, Tythan Anderson's
never played a regular season defensive step. Maybe he's gonna
be really good, but he's never played one, and he's
been in the league for a while. Sajon Anthony had
played eleven. He's not one injury reserve, So that means TJ. Jewles,

(04:02):
who's never played a defensive snap, is the other backup safety.
I mean, I'm almost flored that they didn't bring in
a veteran backup. I really am.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
I just think of so many mile posts during the season.
I mean, you and I you came on our show
right before the draft that we were talking about safety possibilities,
and we were doing so at the outset of free agency,
and we were doing so right before a cutdown date,
that is, and look, if if it works, give credit
to Duke Tobin and Al Golden for you know, betting
on the dudes that they ended up having success with

(04:31):
that to me, frankly, just as a storyline goes, the
fact that it's the same dudes and they've added nobody
is remarkable.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
It is you know, I was told that, you know,
per chance the reason they didn't is whoever that veteran
coming in would have to be a special team. But
if the veteran's never been a special team, or how's
that going to work out? And you know, maybe if
one of the two starters gets hurt, there's enough guys
out there perhaps and that's perhaps to go get that
guy and bring him in and you know, he becomes

(04:58):
the starter, or you know, at least a capable backup
to a Tyson Anderson if he has to start. But
I think you're rolling the dice big time. You know,
we saw what safety looked like when it was really
good with Jesse Bates and Von Bell, and since then
we've seen what safety doesn't look good like. And it
spend the last few years it's been bad.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
No question about it. Richard Skinner from Local twelve, did
you see enough from Schamar Stewart to believe he can
make an instant impact.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
You have to know I would have liked to have
seen something more in that second preseason game that would
have reaffirmed me. I saw him wreck a bunch of
second team dudes a lot in practice. I saw him
do some good things against first team guys in practice.
And again he wasn't out there for a ton of
snaps in that second preseason game. But I mean, no,
I mean, you can correct me. I how I'm wrong.
I mean he felt invisible. I don't remember going, oh,
look at Shamar doing what it Again. I'm not either

(05:46):
to say he can't do that or won't do that,
but convinced No, But I what I saw for a
chunk of training camp. There is some real potential there.
And I think the other part of it is again
that versatility where on passing downs maybe you kick him inside.
I'm interested to see what we get to one of
those early pass rushdowns. Who are the four guys out
there on a third and eight and what does that
look like?

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Yeah, we're on the same page there, Thank you. As always,
We'll talk next week. You bet that's our guy. Richard
