Speaker 2 (00:24):
No Tag, No Tag.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
We got Joe Burrow coming up in nine minutes. What's up, Mulager,
ESPN fifteen thirty. Thanks for listening, Hooker having an awesome Wednesday.
I am stoked, man, There's so much going on. Joe
is gonna talk in nine He's supposed to talk in
nine minutes, so we're tearing. You're in charge of keeping
(00:54):
track of this. Will Joe Burrows show up on time?
If you remember early last year he was really good
about showing up on time for his scheduled three fifteen
press conference, and then maybe because the season wasn't going
so well, he started showing like showing up like ten
minutes late. We'll see. Joe is going to talk. He
is scheduled to talk at three fifteen and because we
(01:14):
know that understandably so you cannot get enough Joe Burrow,
We'll have that for you live right here on the
official home of the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty show Rundowns
available on Twitter. Go look at it now, at Moegar.
Watch it now, I should say, at Moegar, and it
comes your way thanks to Emery Federal Credit Union, your
credit union with heart since nineteen thirty nine. Go to
(01:37):
EMERYFCU dot org. Go there now and become a member
just like me. Later on this hour, the voice of
the Cleveland Browns, Andrews Ciciliano, is going to join us.
You may have heard the Bengals play Cleveland in Cleveland
on Sunday. Joe Burrow is going to talk in just
a few minutes, or at least he's scheduled too. He
is coming off an off season unlike any I think
(02:00):
in the history of Cincinnati sports, certainly in the history
of the Cincinnati Bengals, the last eight months for Joe
Burrow have been remarkable. Now, I don't know if his
team is any better position to win a championship, but
over the last eight months, if Joe Burrow wanted it,
he got it. This is like my daughter. My daughter
(02:22):
has been bugging my wife and I to give her
a yes Day, and we've agreed. She's got to read
like four hundred minutes over the course of the next
month or so. And if she does this, because we're
trying to get her to read more, we'll do a
Yesterday where we say yes to everything. There will be
there will be guardrails, but we'll say yes to everything.
(02:44):
What she wants to eat, where she wants to go,
who she wants to have over. We say yes to everything.
Joe Burrow just got a yes off season. The last
eight months for Joe Burrow have been a continuous Yesterday.
I want t Higgins, Yes, I want Mike KASICKI, Yes,
I want Jamar Chase to be signed long term. Yes,
(03:07):
hey sign Trey Hendrickson. That guy should get paid. Okay, Yes,
maybe not the yes that Trey would have liked, or
even maybe that Joe would have liked, but yes, the
last eight months for Joe Burrow have been unlike any
player that has ever played for the Cincinnati Bengals. This
(03:27):
is not a criticism of Joe Burrow. Much of what
Joe Burrow wanted. We wanted much of what Joe Burrow wanted.
We talked about them needing before Joe Burrow started talking
about that those things. But they have given Joe Burrow
the keys to the franchise in ways that Andy Dalton
never got, Carson Palmer never got, or any quarterback or
(03:50):
player before him, Boomer, Ken Anderson none of them. So
when you're the guy who gets everything they want, now
the arrow is pointed more directly at you, more than
ever before. You and I both know there are people
out there, many of them well known national football analysts,
(04:12):
who when you bring up Joe Burrow well will dock
him a few points because his team didn't make the
postseason last year, or not have him quite in that
upper tier of QBS because well you know, he hasn't
one on MVP and they haven't made the playoffs the
last two years.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Now.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
I think much of that commentary is BS. I do
not know how you could have watched the Bengals last
season and held their shortcomings against Joe Burrow. But if
that narrative tires you, if you have fatigue from it,
if it makes you mad, if it makes you angry,
imagine what it's going to sound like when the guy
(04:48):
who got everything he wanted is still on the outside
looking in with what and who he wanted. We will
see eleven after three o'clock Red lose last night. The
math is getting hard, five out, twenty three to go,
and now the Giants are tied with him. Blue Jays
here for the final of a three game series. I'm
(05:08):
gonna do something that I'm gonna try not to do,
something that I really don't want to do. I'll make
that make sense and I'll tell you who should have
been fired a little bit later on Andrews Ciciliano in
about twenty minutes. He's the voice of the Browns. You
know that name because he used to host the NFL
Red Zone channel on DirecTV. First though, Joe Burrow, You're
(05:30):
gonna hear from him, hopefully on time next on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station. Thank you for listening today.
It's gorgeous outside. I wish we were out and about
today as we were yesterday at Oakley Greens. If you
missed that show, it'll be out tomorrow and broadcasting tomorrow
from Top Golf. One of the best events of the year.
Broadcasting from the Anthony Muno's Top Golf tailgate with a
(05:54):
ton of former Bengals players and our normal Thursday stuff
during the NFL season. Look for that tomorrow three h
five on ESPN fifteen thirty. All right, it's three sixteen.
Joe Burrow is supposed to talk at three point fifteen,
and so we're in a bit of a holding pattern.
I do this. I do this because I know that
everything that Joe Burrow says carries a fair amount of weight.
(06:19):
And I know that everything that Joe Burrow says moves
the meter, even if he says nothing of any major substance.
And so I don't want to deprive you of your
Joe Burrow. All that we ask is that Joe we
ask for two things. Number One, for the reporters who
ask questions to not go overboard. You get him every
single week. Let's keep the whole media session to like
(06:40):
a good ten to twelve minutes outside of that, if
he hasn't talked about it yet, it's not worth asking
him about. And number two, for Joe to show up
on time, because we revolve the entire three o'clock hour
around his press conference. And so we're in the holding
pattern Tarren, let me know when we have Joe Burrow
at the podium at the table talking with the assembled
(07:02):
pro football media and will carry every syllable of the
Bengals quarterback live. Don't forget Sunday. You can watch the
game onesp and you can listen to the game on
ESPN fifth we haven't perfected that technology yet. You can
listen to the game on ESPN fifteen thirty. And by
the way, tonight it's the season debut of Bengals Game
Plan starring Dan Horden Dave Lapham. So as soon as
(07:25):
we're done at six o'clock, don't go anywhere, keep it
here because two actual credible broadcasters are gonna talk about
the Bengals for two hours with an assortment of guests
and other fun and games. So that's the night. At
six o'clock. There was a letter to the editor in
the newspaper, which I think in the eighteen years we've
(07:48):
been doing this show, I have used a letter to
the editor in the newspaper to discuss on the show
maybe four times, maybe three times. I'm gonna do it today.
We've got the game from last night to talk about
the Reds from not just last night, but looking ahead
to this Mets series, and you know what really feels
(08:08):
like their last stand the math is getting tough. Five
out was twenty three to go. Last night, they went
with a bullpen game and Scott Barlow and Brent Souter
while the Reds Bats did do what they can to
make the game at least pseudo interesting. I think Scott
Barlow and Brent Suter were putting a really tough spot
(08:29):
last night, and they were putting a tough spot because
Nicolodolo didn't feel good. And we'll talk about that coming
up a little bit later on, and a lot more
on the Bengals between now and six o'clock as well.
Richard Skinner's going to join us in the five o'clock hour.
You know, I said yesterday my season prediction, which is
worth nothing, is that they go ten and seven. Now,
(08:52):
think about to a degree where we've come from where
we were. When if you say the Bengals are going
to go ten and seven, that feels past mystic and
I will admit it kind of is like I back
when we were doing shows at training camp Austin Elmore
as Tony and I Bengals over under his ten and
a half. Are you taking it? And I said pretty
(09:16):
quickly without thinking about it, yes, because to me, just
at face value, mathematically again, to go from nine to
eleven wins as two victories. If the defense is a
little bit better and Joe Burrow plays seventeen games, they
should win two more football games. And on some level
I agree with that. But there's just a couple of
(09:36):
things that loom over this number. One. Last year they
went nine and eight. They needed a very favorable schedule
with a bunch of bad quarterbacks to break their way
over those final five games. They needed a miraculous finish
to a degree against the Denver Broncos. They needed a
play made at the end of the Dallas game, like
(09:58):
they beat up on some bad teams, took advantage of
some bad quarterbacks, and to their credit, played themselves at
least to the fringe of the playoff race. But at
one point they were four and eight, Like, it's miraculous
that that team never lost again. And one thing you
could put some stock in is how well the Bengals
(10:19):
have played. The last two times Joe Burrow has been
on the team late in the season or twenty twenty two,
they won eight consecutive games last year, they won their
last five. But I for me at least number one.
Watching the defense in the preseason, I am maybe putting
a little bit too much stock in that, but it
(10:40):
was striking how poorly they played. And it was striking
how poorly they played because what you were watching looked
a lot like last year, and many of the same
guys from last year's defense are going to be a
part of this year's defense. That is just not something
that I can assume without seeing some concrete evidence of
(11:04):
market improvement that they're gonna go through market improvement to
be you know, everybody says, well, they've just got to
be league average. Fair to go from what they were
at times last year to league average is not an
inconsequential leap that that's actually that's actually a pretty big
(11:26):
leap from where they were, which was among the worst
defenses in the NFL, to being somewhere around the middle
of the pack. There's a whole lot of teams, and
I know we're looking at this through a statistical lens,
but there's a whole lot of teams that have to
leap frog. Are we sure they're going to do that?
I'm not. I'm hopeful they do, and if they do,
(11:49):
I'll be the first to credit them. And I do
expect them to be at least a little bit better.
I do think Shamar Stewart has a chance to be
a terrific rookie player. But if I'm to believe that
this team is gonna win eleven games, twelve games, thirteen games,
which is really hard to do. The twenty twenty one
Bengals won ten. Now, by the way, that team went
(12:09):
to the Super Bowl. The twenty twenty two Bengals won twelve,
only played sixteen games because of the Damar Hamlin game.
They'd win their last eight. Like, it's really hard to
get to those totals. I cannot put blind faith in
Al Golden. Al Golden, I'm sure knows what he's doing.
On one basic level, right, he's earned the job. There's familiarity.
(12:31):
I can't put blind faith in Al Golden and a
bunch of players who were a part of the solution
or a part of the problem last year. You may
be willing to do that, I can't. To me, a
season prediction in my world is what you would put
some money on. I even did this exercise last week
I'm not taking the over, but I'm also not taking
(12:53):
the under. I'm gonna, you know, sort of a FanDuel.
You could do this, find the sweet spot where I
go under ten and a half and yet, you know,
find an alternate over under and go over nine and
a half. And I think they're gonna win ten games,
and I think they're gonna be a playoff team. But
for me to believe that they're gonna be substantially better
(13:14):
than that, which is when they start to enter that
rarefied air of you know, not just eleven wins, but
twelve or thirteen or fourteen. I need to see more
from units that I didn't see a lot from last year.
And the defense is one, and obviously the offensive line
is another. Joe's ready here he is Joe Burrow talking
with the reporters.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
Now, consistent with our routine, keep my body right.
Speaker 5 (13:36):
So it's got to maintain that through the whole year,
just to start.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
With the continuity and with the full camp.
Speaker 6 (13:46):
How much do you feel like you guys are just
in a great spot from that perspective this season?
Speaker 4 (13:50):
Yeah, we really haven't had too many injuries from any
position crew ball camp, and that's always positive. I think
we've made some good additions throughout training camp two to
help bolster some units, and I think.
Speaker 5 (14:02):
Everybody's feeling good. Morale is good, everybody's excited, ready to go.
Speaker 7 (14:06):
Does it feel just like in the same system.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
Yeah, I feel like I've seen just about every look
that you can get with all of our different plays.
Anytime you are in the same system for that many years,
you know all the ins and outs, the weaknesses of
each play and the plays that you can get to
to attack whatever you're seeing. So I feel like, you know,
(14:33):
like I said, I've just seen seen a lot of
different things in a lot of different situations and can
adapt accordingly.
Speaker 5 (14:39):
What are your initial impressions of.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
I haven't seen him play a lot of football yet,
but the conversations that I've had with him, he's high energy,
is gonna be a really good locker room guy, and
you know, whatever we can get out get from him
on the field will be will be a positive, you know.
The I guess I can't remember when we signed Noa.
I think it was sometime in training camp and then
(15:04):
signing Mike.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Have whatever day.
Speaker 4 (15:08):
That was a couple of days ago today, I'm not sure,
but you know, I think those three signings will help us.
Speaker 6 (15:15):
What was actually like whenever they got trade done what
they did.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
Yeah, that was you know, he was in here and lifting,
run and doing what he needed to do to be ready.
And anytime you can get a pay raise like that,
nobody's gonna be upset about that.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
So it's it's.
Speaker 4 (15:34):
Good to have him back in the building and he's
gonna go be productive like he always is.
Speaker 6 (15:38):
How much better does that make you feel about the season?
The fact that you guys got that done when y'all did.
Speaker 5 (15:43):
Yeah, we know the kind of player that he is.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
He's gonna help us win, So it's good to have
him back out there.
Speaker 8 (15:49):
To that point.
Speaker 9 (15:50):
Have you had a chance to look back and at
the end of the season, you know, we asked you
a million questions about t Jamar Trey and how important
this offseason was when you said on first take, this
is a big off season for the Bangels. You've got
all of them on at least new deals for this season.
Have you had a chance to reflect on just how
(16:10):
much your voice was important in making that happen for
this team this year?
Speaker 4 (16:16):
Not not particularly, I don't really care to reflect on
that I don't think, you know, I'm not really worried
about if my voice carries weight or not.
Speaker 5 (16:31):
I'm not necessarily sure I was.
Speaker 4 (16:36):
You know, we hit, we have discussions, and we have
talks all the time about what's best for our football
team in the future right now, going forward, a lot
of different things.
Speaker 5 (16:47):
And you know, I.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Think credit to our front office for getting guys signed,
and you know that's never easy, dealing with high emotional situation.
And we got some really good players this offseason signed
and resigned.
Speaker 5 (17:06):
We're in a good spot.
Speaker 10 (17:07):
So do you have a sense that right now going
into the season, the front office did its job in
the off season. It's now it's time for the players
coaches also step up and do yours.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
Yeah, I think that's fair to say. We've been put
in the right position. We have the guys out there
that we need to go and achieve our goals. Now
that all that is behind us and we're moving forward,
and now it's our time to go perform on the
field and be productive.
Speaker 10 (17:31):
What gives you the most confidence that you will be reductive.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
History.
Speaker 4 (17:37):
You know, we've all the players that we have in
that in that room have gone and proven it. Time
and time again. And part of being in the NFL
is proven it every single day. That's not you're never done,
you know, you're always looking to improve, and so production
is gonna ebb and flow, but uh, over long periods
(18:03):
of time with sustained great play, you know that production
will will raise and put us in good spots. To
this offense, I think he brings in after the catch
element that is unique. You know, I haven't seen it
first person yet, but I've seen clips and highlights and
(18:24):
I've watched him over the years, and I've got a
lot of respect for him, and I'm gonna give him
opportunities to to go and show.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
What he can do.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
And uh, you know, he's still learning the ins and
outs of the offense. But you know, you can tell
mentally he's a smart guy because everything that we've asked
of him, he when you break the huddle, he's not
asking what to do. He knows what he's doing and
learning the ins and outs of each individual route and play.
Speaker 5 (18:50):
And so he's gonna be a big part of what we.
Speaker 11 (18:53):
Do about the old line room so far that you've
seen this year, and do you think it's one of
the more complete all lines that you've had in your time.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Dude.
Speaker 4 (19:03):
Yeah, I have a lot of confidence in that group.
Like I said, we got to go and improve it.
We can talk about all these different things in here
and how many good players we have and how many
good coaches we have, but we have to go improve it.
On Sundays doesn't mean anything if you have a great
training camp team.
Speaker 5 (19:22):
That's not what we're getting paid for.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
We're going in getting paid to go and win football
games and be productive and play great on Sundays.
Speaker 5 (19:30):
So we got to go prove it.
Speaker 12 (19:33):
Obviously, have plenty of games against Miles Scaret. What have
you learned going up against him going into a game
like the Sunday that you maybe didn't know you know
going in your first or second matchup against them.
Speaker 5 (19:44):
Yeah, he can.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
He can win the game if you let him. You
have to number one, game plan around him. Number two
as a quarterback, you have to be aware of where
he's at at all times with protection IDs and also
know where your quick answer is in whatever concept that
you have called, because sometimes he's back there before you
(20:04):
can catch the ball basically, and you have to get
it out. So but we play great rushers a lot,
you know, he's one of the best, if not the best.
But in this division you play you play guys like
that a lot, so we'll have a good plan for him.
He's gonna make plays, and when he does, he just
got to hold onto the ball and not.
Speaker 5 (20:24):
Make a bad play worse.
Speaker 11 (20:25):
Joe, There's been such an emphasis on starting a whole
lot better this season early.
Speaker 5 (20:30):
On in the season.
Speaker 11 (20:31):
So on the backdrop of that, do you feel any
different right now heading into this the start of this season.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
I mean, I'm very confident.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
My body's in a place that it hasn't been in
years past, So for me personally, I'm excited about that opportunity.
You know, we're treating it like any other game.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
We're not.
Speaker 5 (20:54):
We're not doing anything differently.
Speaker 4 (20:56):
Obviously, there's an emphasis on the start of this season
in and in having to to win some of these
games early, but that comes down to Sundays. Our Our
prep has always been excellent in my opinion. You know,
we're gonna have the right game plan because we have
great coaches, and we're gonna know what we're doing when
we're out there because you know, we put in the work.
(21:17):
It's just about going out and executing those plays and
doing the right things on Sunday?
Speaker 13 (21:21):
Do you think this is your most normal?
Speaker 5 (21:23):
Over giving your treparation? Who is a practice? How do
you practicing?
Speaker 2 (21:28):
Of the six?
Speaker 13 (21:29):
Do you think this is the most normal?
Speaker 2 (21:31):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (21:32):
That's hard to say.
Speaker 4 (21:32):
I think, like I said, I think we're a good spot.
I'm excited about the work that we've put in all
training camp.
Speaker 5 (21:43):
Yeah, I don't I don't know. I don't know about normal.
I don't know what would be abnormal.
Speaker 4 (21:47):
But I'm really excited about where our team's at and
the energy of some of the young guys.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
I know we have a lot of hunger young players
that are about to prove themselves, so I'm excited to
see it.
Speaker 14 (21:57):
You've obviously known for a while that Jo is a
really good player, but as this game to an even
to an even higher level last season, is or anything.
Speaker 5 (22:03):
You learned about him?
Speaker 4 (22:06):
You know, the great players make really hard stuff look
really easy. He just makes it look really easy all
the time. He's so explosive and strong.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
I think.
Speaker 4 (22:17):
I learned more than anything is went in doubt, just
find that guy and throwing the ball. Sometimes it looks
not going to be perfect, but you know, He's gonna
find a way.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
To get it done.
Speaker 11 (22:27):
He said, you've seen at this point in your career
most of the looks that you're gonna see. How often
at this stage of your career do you see something
where you're like, you know that's new or I haven't
seen that before. And when that happens, is your process
of that gestin I think different than it was years ago?
Speaker 5 (22:43):
Very rarely, I would say. You know, every team has.
Speaker 4 (22:47):
Their own style and of defense, and so you know
somebody will a defensive coordinator will throw something at you
that they haven't necessarily shown on tame for the for
the season, but doesn't mean you haven't seen it somewhere else.
And whenever you see something like that, you you bank
it and try to find an answer for the next
(23:08):
time you see it.
Speaker 14 (23:09):
But that said, you face a Jim Schwartz defense that
you know you have to I'm sure feel like you
gotta just every single possession, do you approach it that way?
Speaker 4 (23:25):
You know they're gonna throw a wrinkle here and there.
But you know what they do on defense is they're
fairly simple. They have really good players and he is
a very very good coach at you know what they're
very good at is making every all everything that they
do look like every other thing that they do, And
(23:46):
so as a quarterback, you're not really gonna know what
the coverage is pre snap. You're gonna have to react
to it post snap. That's difficult sometimes that's kind of
the flavor of the league. That's kind of what everybody's
trying to do. Now he has his own unique way
of doing it. I think their corners are some of
the best in the league. It's always really hard when
we go against them. And then their defensive line is
(24:07):
obviously very disruptive, you know led by ninety five, but
they have other guys that can get after you too.
Just watching the games from the past, it's.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
A muddy pocket.
Speaker 4 (24:18):
It's making tight window throws in a very condensed pocket,
often unnatural throwing position, so you always have to be
ready for that.
Speaker 6 (24:27):
Is it tougher to swallow the last week with success?
Know how host y'all have hit. I think like in
every year that you not won a game, it seems
like y'all have had a shot at the end to
win it. Does that make it tougher to swallow that
you only have one your first five years so.
Speaker 5 (24:37):
Far, that's the NFL.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
You're gonna almost every game is gonna come down to
under seven points, one possession game. I think something like
sixty percent of them somewhere around there.
Speaker 5 (24:50):
So that's the NFL. You just got to make place
at the end to go and win.
Speaker 6 (24:53):
It is the one that's might be more unbelievable than
most when you go through once over the years.
Speaker 5 (24:58):
You've certainly had some that are hard to believe, that's
for sure.
Speaker 9 (25:03):
Before the games against the Ravens about the importance of
scoring on every possession and knowing.
Speaker 13 (25:07):
How those games are going to go.
Speaker 9 (25:09):
Specific to Cleveland, what do you need to do that
you've learned and going up against them so many.
Speaker 5 (25:14):
Times, Yeah, you have to get the ball out quick.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
Try to get it out as fast as you can,
because those guys up front are coming and you know
their coach does a good job of sending a pressure
here and there that you're not necessarily ready for. They
don't pressure us a ton, but when they do, it's
usually effective. I think we're in a good spot of
(25:38):
game plan wise of figuring out when and where those
are coming from.
Speaker 5 (25:43):
Are your teammates too have that You're just really looking
forward to seeing what they do this season. All the
young guys, you know, schmart D, Knight, Big.
Speaker 4 (25:52):
I'm excited to see a lot of these young players
go out and prove themselves in this league. You know,
I know they're I did for the opportunity. They've been
working really hard all off season. The energy on that
side of the ball has been fun to watch throughout
training camp, and those guys are just gonna continue to
get better. They're hungry, they're they're working hard to get
(26:13):
better every single day. So the more reps that they
get throughout the season, the better, the better they're going
to be.
Speaker 12 (26:18):
I know, I know quarterbacks don't split lely, you know,
focus on the other quarterbacks, but you know, with Joe
Flacob being on the other side, I know you faced
them before, but what are your thoughts, you know, just
about Flaco in his career is going up against him,
and especially the fact that you know he's gonna be
a four year old quarterback starting Week one.
Speaker 4 (26:33):
Yeah, I think I think he throws it better than
number one A lot of people give him credit for,
and I think he's one of the more natural throws
of the football that I've ever seen. You know he
can spend it with the best of them. He's got
one of the stronger signs of all time. So he's
going to be able to put the ball when and
where he wants.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
To put it.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
He's got to find ways to affect and move him
off of his spot. And I know that, you know,
our defense will have a good game plan for them.
Speaker 6 (27:00):
But what's the communication like with the head official over
the course of a game, like as when you get
like early game like.
Speaker 5 (27:05):
On your steps.
Speaker 6 (27:06):
What kind of report you all have and kind of carry.
Speaker 4 (27:09):
Depends on the official. Sometimes you know, we I know
all of them usually by name. You know, you have
the same ones throughout the season, usually two or three times.
So you get to know these guys and you like
some of them more than others, and you talk to
(27:31):
someone differently than you do maybe others. But at the
end of the day, it's a professional relationship. And you know,
I try to voice my opinions in a respectful way,
and you know, oftentimes you get respect back when you
do it that that way, and sometimes you don't.
Speaker 5 (27:49):
That's that's the NFL.
Speaker 15 (27:51):
Those relationships are those relationships and opinions if you will
do they change it all based on the experience that
you have, or is that driven at all by the
experience that you have playing while they officiated.
Speaker 4 (28:05):
Yeah, I would say that you know, you certainly have
some games that didn't quite you didn't quite think were
officiated correctly, and oftentimes that those are Oftentimes it is
(28:28):
repeat offenders, and you know who they are usually and.
Speaker 5 (28:39):
You adjust accordingly. Do you wait and see when you
go out there on Sunday who it is or early?
Speaker 4 (28:44):
We know, we know early, and every crew is gonna
have their own emphasis, and so you can go back
and look at how many times they threw a certain
penalty and you emphasize that early in the week on
the crew, and then you also have your own experiences
with these guys and.
Speaker 5 (29:05):
Just accordingly, as I said, j Aldio's.
Speaker 16 (29:08):
Mentioned that consistency with your routine is a big factor
in your success.
Speaker 5 (29:13):
How much has your routine changed over the years?
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Has been pretty much the same here?
Speaker 17 (29:18):
If you tweet it a lot, I would say the
rest and relaxation stuff has pretty much stayed the same.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
I think workout wise, maintaining my body in that way,
I tweak it every year depending on how I felt
the year before. If I feel like I needed to
lift heavier, run more, take it easy a.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
Couple of days.
Speaker 5 (29:42):
You know, it just kind of depends on the season.
This year, I'm running a little bit more. I felt
like I could use that.
Speaker 4 (29:49):
After last season, I feel like I did that quite
a bit and wanted to expand my ability in that way.
So we'll see where that goes. And then accordingly after
the year.
Speaker 11 (30:01):
For football fans, you know, you get a week or
so of college football, then you get to lead up
to these NFL games, there's obviously elevated, you know, amount
of excitement for fans. What's that excitement like for you
heading into Week one?
Speaker 5 (30:15):
Yeah, it's it's weird.
Speaker 4 (30:16):
Last week you get into you know, you're going through
the whole game plan, treating it like week one, and
then you have three days off and then you got
to snap back into it and get back into game week.
And I think the best players you can turn it
off and on like that.
Speaker 5 (30:31):
But that takes practice and reps.
Speaker 4 (30:35):
As far as the excitement to get out there, it's
excited to play football game, Excited to get out in
front of the fans and show what we've done all
off season. That's at the end of the day. That's
what this is all about. You're going and showing everybody
the hard work that you've put in over the last
eight nine months to make yourself better and in front
(31:00):
of the world, live on TV. So that's what sports are,
that's why we love them, and I'm excited to go
out there and put on show.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
You think we'll get the most approved of any All Right,
there you go. There's Joe Burrow chatting with the assembled
Pro football media on ESPN fifteen thirty. Don't forget Bengals
and Browns on ESPN fifteen thirty Sunday at one o'clock.
Pre game coverage begins at nine to oh five. We'll
do sports headlines and the voice of the Cleveland Browns.
Speaker 18 (31:25):
Next Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.

thirty two. Another accident blocking off the right lane. This
is a two seventy five on that ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 13 (32:05):
Cincinnati's Smith late.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
I have the tracker up in studio, Joe Burrow eight
minutes late, so we're late for sports outline service at
Kelsey Chevrolet, home of lifetime powertrain protection and guaranteed credit
approval from their family to yours for life Kelsey chef
dot com. You know how in recent years the Bengals
have gotten off the slow starts, and I then the injuries.
Then the guys are hurt well. Zach Taylor today said,
(32:29):
no player limited in practice. This is as healthy as
you could ask a team to be at any point
in the season. Bengals and Browns on Sunday at one
live on ESPN fifteen thirty. Bengals game plan tonight at
six on ESPN fifteen thirty. As soon as we are done,
Reds and Blue Jays again tonight, Zach Lettel Shane Bieber
on the Hill six forty. Tonight's first pitch seven hundred
(32:51):
WLW Tyler Stevenson has been shipped off to a rehab
assignment at Louisville. Lyon Richardson up from Triple A reverse
San Martin is being sent to Louisville. Reds are getting
some help. Tiger is trying to avoid getting swept at
home by the Mets. They have scored three in the
bottom of the seventh inning to extend their lead to
six to two. Game is actually now headed to the
(33:11):
top of the ninth inning, Detroit on top of New
York by a score of six to two. If that
score holds, the Reds will take the field four and
a half games behind New York and the hunt for
the last wildcard. So will the San Francisco Giants, who
are even with the Reds. They take on the Colorado
Rockies tonight. There you Come, Bengals and Brent's on Sunday
at one. Andrews Celano, the longtime host of NFL Red
(33:35):
Zone on DirecTV who was awesome at that, is now
the voice of the Cleveland Browns, replacing the legendary Jim
Donovan who passed away last year. Andrew, it's awesome to
have you. Most have the Browns finishing in last place.
If that doesn't happen. And if this team surprises people
and wins more games than everybody expects, what will have
(33:56):
gone right that everybody expects to go wrong.
Speaker 20 (34:00):
I would have to say that Joe Flacco and the
Browns defense collectively would have to rocket like it's twenty
twenty three. Joe flatcot four consecutive three hundred yard passing
days end the season. I believe he's the only Browns
quarterback in history to do that, and that defense was
the number one defense in football. They need to play
that style of ball. They need to run the ball,
(34:22):
They need to get back to the play action where
it's actually effective, and the defense needs to remember who
the heck they were this defense. They've been hesitant to
go back and say, oh, we could be twenty twenty
three again because they don't want to. Hey, they don't
want to. I don't know make promises, But that was
(34:43):
two years ago. It wasn't two weeks agos two years ago.
But mo, I can tell you that their defensive line,
not just the first team, but a second team and
even the third team that has a former first round
pick like Joe try and Schoyanka has been wrecking practice
through camp and wrecking practice when we were in Carol
for a joint practice, or for two days in Philadelphia
against both Jordan Malava and Lane Johnson. They think this
(35:06):
defense is legit. Now the injury to MJ. Anderson is
beyond heartbreaking, and especially coming up this week against Joe Burrow.
You're only as good as your weakest corner, so that
will be a challenge. I can't sit here and promise
ten games for all these people that think they're going
to go two and fifteen.
Speaker 7 (35:23):
I laugh at him.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
You mentioned Miles Garrett, so, as you know, we spent
an entire offseason talking about a great defensive player who
wasn't thrilled with his contract, and for a while we thought, well,
the Miles Garrett thing may have an impact on Trey
Hendrickson if they trade Miles Garrett, which is kind of
the direction that felt like it was going. Since then,
he's back with the Browns. He signed a massive contract
(35:46):
when that happened. Were you surprised?
Speaker 2 (35:50):
So?
Speaker 20 (35:50):
I wasn't surprised that they held steadfast in their result
that they were not going to trade him.
Speaker 3 (35:57):
They never wanted to trade him.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
They made it very clear to him.
Speaker 20 (36:00):
Miles obviously said what he said and gave his interviews
at the Super Bowl, and that resonated. But even at
the Super Bowl, they were steadfast, both publicly and privately,
that they were not going to trade him. I think
when it went down, I was surprised. It was not
something that I knew had been brewing in the last
forty eight hours. And I was in Austin, Texas for
(36:20):
south By Southwest. I looked at my phone and went,
oh boy. And then you look at the numbers and
you go, wow, those numbers are just a massive leap
from where anyone thought they would land. Therefore, because remember
Jamar Chason come inted what thirty five, or Justin jefd
Justin Jefferson had come int of thirty five, the idea
that we're going to forty for anybody seemed ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
But look since then, and.
Speaker 20 (36:41):
That was March when it happened. We're five months later
and those numbers have been surpassed multiple times. So look,
the other way to do it was you trade Miles.
You do the Michael Parsons trade that the Cowboys just did.
You do it back in March, and this is a
total tear down and rebuild. That is not the case,
because they do feel and listen, they're kind of stuck
(37:03):
in no man's land, especially when it comes to quarterback.
They're not rebuilding yet. They have ten to twelve rookies
on this team, including a number of undrafted free agents,
and they brought in Isaiah Bond, who was a guy
that would have been a second or third round pick,
but he fell obviously because of his those legal issues.
They're kind of stuck in the middle, and that's what
they're trying to do is make that transition without tearing
(37:25):
it down.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
Andrew Siciliano, voice of the Cleveland Browns, is with us.
How would you describe the quarterback battle that waged all
throughout training camp?
Speaker 20 (37:34):
It really wasn't much of a battle because Kenny Pickett
got hurt. I think if he had been healthy, there
was a legitimate shot for him to win the job
and it would be Kenny Pickett's starting week number one
on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
But we never saw it.
Speaker 20 (37:46):
I mean, he heard his hamstring and what thought might
be a couple you know, it was thought, maybe it's
a day or two.
Speaker 5 (37:51):
I thought, all of a sudden, it turned.
Speaker 2 (37:52):
Into multiple weeks.
Speaker 20 (37:54):
The Browns really like Kenny Pickett, I'm not saying he
was going to have a Sam Darnold kind of revitalization
to his career, but if you look at him, and
I know mo quarterback wins and losses are a debatable stat.
Some say that stat is worthless. But he is fifteen
and ten in his career as a starter. He has
eight fourth quarter comebacks, and he had Matt Canada at
his offensive core as his offensive coordinator, with a suspect
(38:16):
offensive line, and god knows what was happening in Pittsburgh
there on that side of the ball. The brown saw
they had a ball of clay that they really could
mold with a different play caller and a different offensive
line and a better run game. They thought they had something.
It never materialized. And then it was Joe Flacko because
he has clearly been the best quarterback in camp.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
And look at the Browns first six weeks.
Speaker 20 (38:37):
It's Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Jordan Love, Jared Goff and
the Vikings in London been at Pittsburgh without a buyer,
Aaron Rodgers. There's no way you're starting a rookie, not
a third round pick, and not a fifth round pick.
Speaker 2 (38:48):
So it's Joe.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
Flattough, So they draft Shador Sanders, they take Dylan Gabriel.
I just I've described it from afars. It's a weird
quarterback situation because of the mix of rookie and veterans,
and Flacco was out of the league for a while,
and he left after leaving the Browns to the postseason
and he comes back. It's there's a lot there. I
think there's a lot of folks who expected the quarterback
(39:10):
thing to be a circus. From where I sit, it
just it felt like not a normal quarterback battle. But
it didn't feel that abnormal. Is that a good way
of putting it?
Speaker 20 (39:19):
So it four is a bit too many, and they
did their best to make certain that the quarterbacks got reps.
But you could only divide up the reps so many ways,
even when you're two spotting, and even when you have
ninety players, and even when you're doing a joint practice
with both the Panthers and the Eagles. So that part
of it was difficult. But the only circus was on
(39:41):
television and on Twitter. That's where the circus was. There
was absolutely no circus within the building. Everybody got along
grace right, you laugh, you like it's Joe Flacco, the
old man telling the stories in the in the in
the meeting room at Shador, and Dylan Gabriel trying to
impress Joe Flacco so like he's there, like he's an
(40:01):
old uncle, right who tells funny jokes and complains about
TikTok and social media. And then there's can't you pickt
the guy kind of stuck in the middle between the
two kids and the old man who was only twenty
seven years old. The circus was people screaming on TV
with their hot takes no names. I mean, it was
all over the map. Everyone knows every channel, no matter
(40:22):
where you turned, without any knowledge of what was happening
day by day and going off you know, stat trackers, reporters,
and look, I'm as guilty as anyone breathlessly writing down
how many completed passes each of these guys had, without
any context about drop passes or installation or what the
what the goal of any particular drill in any particular
(40:45):
day was.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
It was. It was just comical.
Speaker 20 (40:48):
And then the vitriol on Twitter for people that have
no clue what the heck they're talking about made it worse.
Speaker 2 (40:54):
But that was never felt.
Speaker 20 (40:56):
I mean, we laughed about it, but I can't say
that it ever truly affected anything within the building.
Speaker 3 (41:02):
Android cant thank you enough. I know you have a
lot going on, man, have a great call on Sunday.
We appreciate you doing this. Awesome to have you. Thanks
so much.
Speaker 20 (41:11):
Hey Mo, happy to do it. Sorry for my long
winded answers. Looking forward to week one. It's like Matt
Lafleur just said, Week one is like the closest thing
to a playoff atmosphere that you can get because everyone's
hyped up. So Brown's, Bengals, AFC, North's Let's do it.

I felt like a very chaotic first hour the show,
chaotic guy said, what's up? Yeah, this is ESPN fifteen thirty,
But I you know, the entire time, I was cool,
calm and collected. Of course, this is ESPN fifteen thirty
on moegor. Thank you for listening. Brendanman and John's on
baseball later on this hour, and we're going to talk
(43:26):
sports and money with someone who actually appeared on this
show like ten years ago, and it's been a while,
and there's somebody that I've known for a long time.
We're gonna talk sports and money. Actually, you just heard
her during that last break, the great Amy Wagner from
Dean Dorton. We're gonna do that coming up in just
(43:47):
about thirty minutes. We'll throw out some pole questions as
well on Twitter at moegar. Thanks to United Heartland Insurance,
we'll do Nick Lodolo's absence last night's game. He misses
the start. Reds have to go to the bullpen in
the first inning. Bullpen day. Scott Barlow the first one
to pitch. Didn't work out. Brent Souter, who we love
(44:11):
brent Souter. He was a gas can. Last night. Reds
dug themselves an eight to one hole tried to come
back lose the game, fell to at the time five
behind the Mets. Now New York has lost to the
Tigers today. The Mets come here obviously this weekend for
a big three game series. I think tonight's a huge
opportunity for the Reds. It's a big game, like we are,
and nobody wants to do this kind of entering must
(44:34):
win territory. You know, you've got to stave off the
San Francisco Giants, who still have a whole bunch of
games against the Colorado Rockies. You've got the Mets coming
this weekend. Needless to say, they need to win that series.
I'm not sure they need to sweep it. The emphasis
on sweeping it is not quite there. If they can
gain a game tonight, we'll see if they do Reds
(44:55):
and Blue Jays at GABP, we'll talk about Lodolo and
the misstart last night and what I you genuinely don't
want to do coming up in just about twelve minutes
or so. You know, I was listening to Joe Burrow
talk just a short while ago and Zach Taylor a
little earlier today. By the way, Zach made it official
Lucas Patrick is going to be the team starting right guard.
(45:19):
I don't know about you. Relative to what they have,
that's fine. Lucas Patrick and Dalton Reisner strike me as
similar type players, similar profile. Lucas Patrick has not had
a great camp. I'm not sure he's the guy that
I would have said at the end of last offseason
they gotta go get and start at one of the
(45:39):
guard positions. But if all things are equal, give me
the guy who at least has been here for a
little while and been going through training camp. The leash
should be short. I'm guessing the lease leash is short.
Leash is short is not easy for me to say.
Dalton Reisner may end up being a starter on this
(46:01):
offensive line and may prove to be a great acquisition.
I have noticed there is excitement for Dalton Reisner that
would rise to the level of that has risen to
the level that it would get to if they like
brought back Andrew Whitworth while he was still in his
(46:22):
prime and really good with the LA Rams like Dalton
Riiser might be a good player, and dude was out
there looking for a gig with not a whole lot
of takers in a league that has starred for offensive
lineman for a reason. That doesn't mean they shouldn't have
signed them. Of course they should have signed him. That
doesn't mean that he can't be a good contributor to
(46:45):
this offensive line.
Speaker 22 (46:46):
He can.
Speaker 3 (46:48):
But I don't know where this narrative took shape that
Dalton Reisner not starting instead of Lucas Patrick is some
sort of, I don't know, irresponsible act of coaching malpractice.
That thing is kind of out there a little bit
on social media. But as listening to Zach Taylor talking
(47:10):
about the injury report, no player limited today, so there
was no excuse to not win this game on Sunday,
I'm sorry none. The biggest reason why the Bengals have
lost the first game of the season each of the
last three years has been the performance of Joe Burrow.
The performance of Joe Burrow has been affected by something
(47:31):
you could argue very successfully. I'm not sure we all
need a history lesson, but just in case, he did
not look completely comfortable coming off of wrist surgery in
last year's season opener. The year prior, he was dealing
with a calf issue that was an issue all throughout
training camp the year prior, he had just had an
appendectomy and lost a whole bunch of weight compromise practice time.
(47:54):
No such issue this year. The biggest takeaway on July twenty,
third day one of training camp for most of us,
was not about Shamar Stuart or Trey Hendrickson or anybody else.
It was Joe is here. Joe is healthy, and that's
the biggest factor. It's the biggest factor in determining the
Bengals overall success. We all know that. But that's the
(48:16):
biggest factor in their three losses to open the season
each of the last three years. But along with that,
you have a team that is as healthy as you
could ask going into the first game. Not to mention,
we wondered whether or not Trey Hendrickson was going to
be here for the first game. Trey Hendrickson will be
there for the first game. We wondered for a while.
(48:37):
This feels like forever ago. Is Shamar Stuart going to
be there for the first game. Yes, that's been abundantly
clear for over a month. Shamar Stewart, who had a
good camp, is going to be on the field week one.
All of their draft picks are going to be available,
all of their main players are going to be available.
There is no excuse to lose to the Cleveland Browns.
(48:59):
They may have to one out. NFL openers are always
sort of weird at times, kind of janky, and at
the end of the day, style points in any NFL
game do not matter. They maybe matter less than any
other time. In the first game, there was no excuse
to not win this football game two years ago. Was
you know in Burrow's cafinet, it's Kader RAINI out there
(49:22):
in Cleveland. Don't want to hear it. Man, do not
want to hear it? No excuse. Last year they lost
to a team that ended up being so wretched they
fired their coach. Jacoby Brissett played quarterback for the other team,
lifelong backup quarterback rookie coach. Bengals lost as heavy favorites
(49:43):
at home. The Burrough thing gave him an excuse. It's
not a pass. I didn't give the Bengals a pass
last year. I hope you didn't give the Bengals a
pass last year for losing that game, because they didn't
deserve it. Joe Burrow kind of did. Joe Burrow doesn't
need a pass. Zach Taylor's in his seven NFL season.
And by the way, the excuse of well, you know
(50:05):
Al Golden and it's gonna take some time. Ah man, know,
you emphasize getting off to a fast start. That means
Al Golden needed to emphasize getting off to a fast start,
and you hired him thinking this guy can help us
get off to a fast start. We're not working in
a whole bunch of new players on defense. By the way,
there are obviously new guys, but ah man, no, no, no,
(50:28):
it may take some of these dudes time to get
used to the scheme. They should take zero time getting
used to each other. Uh huh. I saw that injury
report today and I'm like, Okay, you could not be healthier.
You could not be healthier. That may not be the
case next week, may not be the case when the
(50:49):
good of Minneapolis may not be the case in the
middle of the season. By the way, it's something you
have to take advantage of. The twenty fifteen Bengals won
twelve games, kind of ran away with the division, and
they did that largely on the strength of great health
for much of the season. Now it unraveled when Andy
Dalton got hurt. Obviously, we talk about this with the
(51:10):
Reds all the time. You got to take advantage of
when you're really healthy. The Reds haven't really done that
this year. Injuries are going to be a part of
the season, certainly much more so in football than baseball,
but they're gonna take hold. So you've got to take
care of business when you're whole and when you're healthy.
It applies in any sport. Bengals have a quarterback who
(51:31):
just went through his most normal offseason and training camp ever.
By the way, during that offseason, he literally got everything
he wanted. His teammates around him are very, very healthy.
Nobody was limited at practice today. There is zero excuse,
zero excuse to lose to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
(51:54):
That may sound like a hot take, it's not. They're
playing a bad team. Joe Flacco is the other quarterback.
Every odds maker alive has long odds on the Browns
finishing in third, much less first or making the postseason.
I know the Bengals history in Cleveland isn't great. I
(52:14):
know Joe Burrow's history against the Browns is an awesome
Do not care. Spent the entire offseason hearing about how
they're emphasizing getting off to a fast start. You combine
that with the health of your quarterback and the health
of your team overall, you have no wiggle room. Do
not have to blow them out, do have to win
(52:34):
the football game. And if this season is going to
be as good as we all hope, what they have
to do is during the stretches where they're healthy, which
maybe one week, it may be one month, it may
be half the season. Who knows. Got to take advantage
playing a bad team. You have a quarterback advantage, you
ever roster advantage, you have a health advantage in the
(53:00):
football game. And if not, boy, what we talk about
on Monday is gonna be something. By the way, speaking
of Monday, don't forget the first Tony and Mo football
show of the year. We're back at Twin Peaks, starting
this season in Westchester, which is obviously just off the
Union Center Boulevard exit. This is our sixth year at
(53:20):
Twin Peaks, rotating during the season between the Westchester location
and the Florence location. We love both equally. The folks
at Twin Peaks, We've had just a blast working with
them over the years. We are so thankful that they
bring us back every single year. All we need is you.
Monday Twin Peaks. If you haven't been to Twin Peaks, terrific.
Food went before the VA Fest. Food is awesome, Beer
(53:43):
selections top notch. We love Twin Peaks. You'll love Twin Peaks.
Hopefully we see you there every Monday during the season,
beginning this Monday in Westchester seventeen minutes after four o'clock.
I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you what I couldn't help
(54:05):
but think about last night.

This is football in the NATI brought to you by
Modern Office Methods on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 18 (54:53):
If you home of Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 3 (54:56):
Yuah Brown's injury report, we mentioned the Bengals literally literally
have injuries to report, which you know, I could change
over the course of the week. But that's that's a
pretty good place to be for the opener. The Browns
have a handful of guys, maybe most notably Denzel Ward Limited.
He was asked today if he wants to shadow Jamar
(55:16):
Chase or stay on the outside and said, I'll do whatever.
So we'll see how that match up unfolds. What defenses
do with Jamar and t and Chase Brown is gonna
be fascinating. Hey, NFL season begins tomorrow night, and the
Manning cast is so popular. So Tony and I are
gonna do our own version tomorrow night at Covington Yard.
We're calling it Tony and Mo Unplugged. And so you
(55:39):
know what that it means. It means it's not for air. Now,
that doesn't mean we're gonna be like raunchy and gross
and stuff. At least I won't.
Speaker 2 (55:47):
Tony.
Speaker 3 (55:47):
I don't know, man, get a drink or too in him?
You never know what's gonna happen. But we're gonna do
like our own version of the Manning Cast tomorrow for
the opener, it's Philly and Dallas and talk about the season,
maybe talk a little all like old school locks of
the Night. We'll do that at Covington Yard tomorrow. Jordan
Battle's gonna join us. And you know, look, let's face it, man,
(56:07):
Jordan Battle's gonna be under the microscope because the Bengals
have done nothing in safety. So hopefully Jordan Battle makes
us go, God, you know what, the Bengals got it right. Uh,
He's gonna do a meet and greet that he's gonna
hang out with us for about an hour. So that's
gonna be at Covington Yard tomorrow. I was at Covington
Yard last night for an event, uh sports betting one
oh one. The Reds game was on. I I've done
(56:32):
this show for a long time and and the nicest
thing that the compliments that I like the most are
are the ones where people say, you know what, Mo,
you're not a hot take artist, because that means, like,
all right, you value the fact that you have somebody
who tries to put some thought behind their opinions or
they they'll say, and I like this one. Sometimes I'll hear, U,
you don't take cheap shots, you don't act irresponsible, and
(56:54):
that that matters to me because there are people who
do this, though not in this building, there are people
who do this. So I think it times, you know,
maybe take a cheap shot or maybe say something that
they shouldn't being kind of irresponsible. So I we found
out Nick Lidolo wasn't gonna pitch last night. I hope
Nick is okay. He apparently had a high fever and
(57:16):
he had the sniffles, I guess, and he had a
running nose and he needed to go home and go
eat some chicken soup and go to bed, and that's whatever.
I hope he's okay. And I, you know, it's not
his responsibility or the Reds responsibility to tell us, you know,
how he is doing. There's like hippo rules in there
(57:38):
or something. This isn't like, you know, straining your elbow.
So hopefully he's cool when he makes his next start.
I have to be honest with you, all of those
things I just said about me having stated those things,
I could not help but ask myself. And this might
be blatantly unfair, but my impulse yesterday afternoon, and my
(58:01):
impulses I watched Scott Barlow and Brent Souiter just a
light of fire last night, and you know, essentially pitch
the Reds out of a chance of even winning the game,
coming close to winning the game. Nicolodolo couldn't give him
three innings. And I hate, I hate that I even
went there. I hate, I kind of hate that I'm
(58:22):
even saying that on the air right now. But like,
here's the deal man, Hunter Green. By the way, Hunter
Green was awesome on Sunday. I'm sure you still have
folks who think he should be traded. But you know,
Hunter Green came back on his own timeline and I
and I read I read in the uh, the newspaper
of record here in town. How well you know, his
(58:43):
teammates can't be very happy about that. Maybe that's why
they should trade him. He slow played his injury. I
don't know if he did or didn't. It did take
a while for him to come back. He has hurt
a lot, there's no denying that. But my you know,
sort of view on that was the the athlete knows
his or her body Hunter Green at that level knows
(59:03):
his body well. And if he says, I'm not ready
to compete at the highest level in the world and
I need a little bit more time, okay. But if
we're gonna do this with Hunter Green and do it
without really knowing where he was mentally or physically, okay, cool,
I can't wonder why Niicolodolo couldn't get through the batting order.
(59:24):
Once again, Man, we may find out he was, like,
you know, dealing with the sort of sickness that just
totally paralyzes you. And maybe that's the case. But in
the absence of knowing that, since we have decided to
just assume that Hunter Green should be back when we
don't know, let's do the same thing with Nickolodola. And
(59:46):
we love Nicolodola has sat in this studio and talk
with me. He's in a very good year. He's a
reliable starting pitcher. Like I am more than comfortable with
Nickolodolo taking the ball every fifth day for the next
few years, and you should be too. But I will
be honest. Last night, man, I'm watching that going god
with this bug that everybody apparently on the team has
(01:00:08):
permeating its way through the team. It was so bad
for Nick Lodolo that he couldn't just try and just
see if he could get through the first couple of
innings in an effort to ensure that they didn't have
to cover nine innings from a bullpen that is already
already feels like a little bit of a house of cards.
And if you're gonna shake your head and say no,
(01:00:30):
you can't do that, you don't know how sick he is.
That's cool. For three weeks during the summer, all I
heard was Hunter Green needs to be back pitching right now,
and his teammates probably hate him for the fact that
he's not. Okay, cool, If we're gonna do that with
Hunter Green, a better pitcher by every account than Nick Lodolo,
then fine. In the middle of a wildcard race, with
(01:00:51):
his team playing a game last night, they really can't
afford to lose many more games. Our guy couldn't get
through three innings last night, huh?
Speaker 2 (01:00:59):
Can?
Speaker 3 (01:00:59):
I then wonder how his sick teammates, because again this
bug is working its way through the team, how they
view Nick taking a bow mere hours before the game
and putting Tito Francona and Derek Johnson and the bullpen
behind the eight ball. I hate doing that because, you know,
I want to give the dude the benefit of it
out and I certainly hope he's okay, and maybe it
(01:01:19):
just was physically impossible for him to do anything athletic
last night. I will be honest with you, man, my
first impulse was, Man, I don't know, dude, give it
a stot, give it a shot. See if you could,
can you take the hill, throw a bullpen, have Plan
B in the back of your pocket, and all right, cool,
Scott Barlow is gonna pitch if Nick just can't do it,
(01:01:40):
and if the conversation all summer long about Hunter Green
is going to stick that, oh you know what. He's soft.
He slow played it. He didn't do right by his teammates, cool,
so much to the degree that our guy Jason Williams
and the Inquirer suggests didn't suggest said they should trade
him this offseason. That's fine. Fine, Let's do the same
(01:02:01):
thing with the other guy who's not nearly as good.
Twenty nine from five Brendanman and Jones on baseball is

that I'm old enough to remember when the season started
(01:04:46):
on November thirtieth, ninety five, ninety six. You could look
this up. They started the season against Wyoming on November thirtieth.
This year, the season begins on November third, when the
Bearcats host Western Carolina. You can look at the entire slate,
which is okay at go Bearcats dot com. For years,
(01:05:07):
on this show, I've wanted to do a like a
regular segment where we talked about the unending intersection between
sports and money and sports and business, and I've always
thought it would make sense to do I've been looking
for the right person to do it with, and lo
and behold the person that we're gonna do it with.
(01:05:27):
I've known for like decades, and she's been on this
show before because we once made a wager on the
Kentucky versus uc NCAA tournament game in twenty fifteen, which
the Bearcats held their own in for a good nine
minutes before at the time undefeated Wildcats took over and
I forget what we wagered. I think Amy had to

Speaker 8 (01:06:15):
Really good? It's good to be here.
Speaker 22 (01:06:17):
One other thing I think we should note is, yes,
the Bengals whooped up on your Bearcats in that game,
But that really started my radio career because.
Speaker 3 (01:06:26):
Here you're welcome.
Speaker 8 (01:06:27):
Someone had been listening.
Speaker 22 (01:06:29):
To that show and was like, hey, that girl has
always done the news and she could probably do radio too,
And that launched a financial radio show and my time
on it over a decade long.
Speaker 8 (01:06:41):
So thanks for losing that bad.
Speaker 3 (01:06:43):
I appreciate that was That was twenty fifteen, the Cincinnati
Kentucky game and had the Bearcats one. I was going
to get a chance to.
Speaker 8 (01:06:51):
Co anchor my show, Anker the News.
Speaker 3 (01:06:55):
I think everybody can for.
Speaker 8 (01:06:56):
The record, Yes, it was the weekend anchor.
Speaker 3 (01:06:59):
At the time.
Speaker 22 (01:07:00):
We were going on after NASCAR, like one thirty seven
in the morning, So it wasn't like you were ready
for prime time necessarily, but sure.
Speaker 8 (01:07:07):
You would have co anchored the show.
Speaker 22 (01:07:09):
It just didn't go that way and launched, you know
now a radio career.
Speaker 8 (01:07:14):
That's been so fun.
Speaker 3 (01:07:15):
Yeah. So that was ten years ago, the Kentucky Cincinnati game.
It is awesome to have you.
Speaker 8 (01:07:20):
Good to be here.
Speaker 3 (01:07:21):
I know you're a big.
Speaker 8 (01:07:21):
Sports spot that we should do a show together.
Speaker 3 (01:07:24):
It's been a long time in the making. And the
thing is, I'm honest when I say this. For years,
I've thought, like, let's do sports and money, because you
can't talk about sports without talking money. And I mean
we were even doing it. Last week. Cincinnati played a
football game against Nebraska and they essentially sold it to
them to move it to Kansas City, and the dollar
(01:07:44):
amount was four and a half million dollars and instead
of talking about the game, all the talk was should
they have moved the game and taken the check for
four point five million dollars. That is a small example
of how we are just constantly talking and interweaving sports
and money with each other.
Speaker 22 (01:07:59):
Oh, you and I have talked to when the Bengals
went to the Super Bowl, right how much money that
brought in? And we've talked about when you see switch
conferences and what would that mean to fans and what
kind of money would come to the program as the
results of that.
Speaker 8 (01:08:11):
So you and I have kind of.
Speaker 22 (01:08:13):
Been on each other shows for years now, which we
never got it together on a regular thing.
Speaker 8 (01:08:17):
And I was talking to a client earlier.
Speaker 22 (01:08:19):
Today and he was like, oh my gosh, why didn't
even think about this years ago.
Speaker 8 (01:08:22):
I was like, well, MO and I kind of did,
but that's all right. And he said, well, what are
you going to call it?
Speaker 22 (01:08:27):
And he said, I don't know that we came with
a name up for And he said, what about MO
money with wags?
Speaker 3 (01:08:32):
Oh?
Speaker 22 (01:08:32):
And I was like, MO Money. I feel like it
was like right in front of us this whole time.
It gives you a little more credit than I'd like
to give you, but if you put with Wags in it,
I think it's okay.
Speaker 3 (01:08:44):
The best I came up with was Amy Wags Wednesdays.
But that doesn't tell you what the segment's all about.
It could be about anything. It could be about Dixie
Heids High school football. Give you about anything.
Speaker 22 (01:08:54):
I don't know it could be And that's a good
place to start, Dixie Heights High School fotball.
Speaker 8 (01:08:57):
But I'm sure we'll get there at some point.
Speaker 22 (01:08:59):
Yeah, let's talk about the Benkals since we had kind
of kind of a big game on the horizon this week.
You know, and I think as mere mortals, right, the
rest of us who watch these games and pretty much
live and die by, right, what happens on Sundays, we
hear about what these players bring in, right, their paychecks,
and they're astronomical to so many of us. I can't
(01:09:20):
imagine a Joe Burrow like paycheck. I mean, I watched
the documentary, you know what I mean. I don't ever
think I'm going to go out and buy a batmobile
or Samurai swords for all of my friends, right, So
this is definitely next level wealth. But I think the
interesting thing is even these players that play at that
level or what's league minimum right now, eight hundred plus
(01:09:41):
more than the average Joe like brings in in a
monthly paycheck. For sure, I think it's safe to say that, right,
But then you like hear the stats about how many
of them go bankrupt. I mean ten years ago, it
was like eighty percent of players once they left the
game went bankrupt or had some kind of major financial
issue afterwards. And I think for many of them, what's
(01:10:04):
going on is what goes on for a lot of people. Okay,
maybe we don't have that kind of paycheck, but lifestyle creep. Right,
It's like when you start to make more money, do
you start saving more?
Speaker 8 (01:10:14):
Nope, nope.
Speaker 22 (01:10:15):
So many people spend more, right, we see it all
the time. And now they've tried to bring in, you know,
financial professionals to talk to these people who, by the way,
make a ton of money to play a game, you know.
I mean, it's not like they had to take a
personal finance class. But you and I've talked about this before.
Neither one of us did either, you.
Speaker 3 (01:10:33):
Know, No, no, I had no financial literacy in high
school or college or really in my twenties. Yeah, and of.
Speaker 22 (01:10:40):
You went to the fine institution University of Dayton. I
went to the University of Kentucky. We went to great
high schools.
Speaker 3 (01:10:46):
Yeah, and so I wish I wish I would have
paid more attention or asked the right questions. The part
of it that I wonder about because you talk about
professional athletes. Yeah, so you know, college athletics. The professionalation
of college athletics has taken hold, and I'm in favor
of it. Like I want everybody to get paid. I
want everybody to get every dollar they can. I do
(01:11:08):
wonder and we hear about what the you know, the
best quarterbacks in college football get. But there are a
lot of college athletes that are getting a nice chunk
of money relative to the average college student. But that's
not exactly life changing. And I wonder how many of them,
as much as I am a proponent of them getting
as every time they can, I wonder how much of
(01:11:28):
them are equipped with the tools they need to ensure
that they make that money last, or make that money
do something for them besides what I would do with it,
which is, you know, you know, let's be honest, I'd
buy a lot of beer with it. When I was
twenty one years old, right, And so I wonder about that.
At the collegiate level, are are they being taught about
(01:11:49):
financial literacy?
Speaker 22 (01:11:50):
Yeah, and I think there is a financial fitness program
that's available to the NFL, and now they're trying to
get people who are getting nil money in as well.
But you think about it, man, if you're a junior
in college, twenty five thousand dollars is like two and
a half million dollars to a normal person, right, And
then you think of all the things you can do
when you buy the car or whatever, and then all
(01:12:10):
of a sudden that money's gone. You've got nothing to
show for it. And so again it's it's lifestyle creep.
And I think, you know, we have to start having
these conversations in our homes with our children about the fact.
Speaker 8 (01:12:21):
That, hey, there's some ways to think through that money.
Speaker 22 (01:12:24):
Yes, nobody's saying don't treat yourself, but like, is there
debt that needs to be paid off?
Speaker 8 (01:12:30):
Is there a way that you can make a difference.
Speaker 22 (01:12:32):
I covered a former Bengals player pretty closely for a
long amount of time, and I was at his place
many many times. He had roughly seventy three cousins living
with him and had brought bought vehicles for all of them, right,
I mean, these are the stories that.
Speaker 8 (01:12:48):
You hear coming out of this.
Speaker 22 (01:12:49):
But hey, how many people have the rich uncle or
the one person in the family who does really well
and people are coming to them for a handout all
the time. I mean, I think so much of what
we see going wrong often with these players that make
these ginormous paychecks are the same things that you can
estrapolate out to people who are making normal paychecks and
not thinking through how much should I really be saving
(01:13:12):
right now so that I can retire someday?
Speaker 23 (01:13:14):
You know?
Speaker 8 (01:13:15):
I mean the average player, what is it, three years
in the league?
Speaker 3 (01:13:17):
Three point three Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:13:19):
Three point three years in the league. Many of them
aren't thinking about what comes next.
Speaker 22 (01:13:22):
They're thinking about how to get over the injury that
they suffered last Sunday. Right, And I think that financial
health is as important, or should be as important as
their actual health.
Speaker 3 (01:13:32):
I think one of the most and I told you
I was going to find this for you, and I will.
One of the most touching scenes in the show Hard
Knocks I've ever seen was when the Bengals were on
it in two thousand and nine. Chad Johnson had played
in the league for at that point eight or nine years.
He was a multi multi millionaire. He was one of
the most famous athletes in the country to that point,
huge name. I mean, you know, he was by then,
(01:13:53):
he was established. And there's a scene in Hard Knocks
where he ambles into a meeting room and Marvin Lewis
is there, and you can tell like a meeting had
just been conducted, and Marvin Lewis literally takes Chad Johnson
and explains to him how banks work. Yeah, and I
thought to myself, that's really cool, right, That's really cool
of Marvin to do. But it's terrifying that an NFL
(01:14:14):
head coach would have to have that type of conversation
with a player. And I'm sure it happens all throughout
the NFL. These are adults, yes.
Speaker 22 (01:14:21):
But who's pulling them aside saying when you get money in,
how much are you going to spend?
Speaker 8 (01:14:27):
How much are you going to stave? How much are
you going to invest?
Speaker 22 (01:14:30):
Right? Many of them their entire lives have been about
the next game and the next play and how to
excel at that level. And there aren't any conversations about
how do you set yourself and your family up for
success after this three point three years are over.
Speaker 3 (01:14:43):
Yeah, I'm always I'm always taken aback when you watch
like the NBA Draft or the NFL draft, and invariably
somebody will ask, you know, one of the kids who
have been drafted, what are you going to buy first?
And like, again, man, god knows what I would buy,
but I'm waiting for the kid to go. Well, you
know what my fin angel planner told me that this
is I'm waiting for that answer, and I bet we
(01:15:05):
get it one day.
Speaker 8 (01:15:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 22 (01:15:06):
Well, and there is advice out there specifically aimed toward
people that are being drafted, and they talk about players
like Gronk who lived off of well endorsement money, right,
and so then he just banked, saved, invested every single
dime of every paycheck he ever bought in. And they
also say, listen, you can have anything, but you can't
have everything. Joe Burrow, he can have everything. The average
(01:15:27):
player out there, you kind of got to pick what
it is that you're going to spend money on. The
average person has to do this too. Is it travel,
is it eating out? Is it making sure that our
kids don't have to pay for college, and that becomes
then the priority and everything else. If it's not the priority,
then maybe you don't spend money on it, you know.
And I think so many of these people when they
get the first paychecks, or any of us, when the
(01:15:49):
first bonus comes in or the first raise, it's spent
in your minds before it ever hits your bank account.
And if you would step back and think, okay, what
about my few yourself? What are they going to wish
that I decided? And if you start thinking about money
that way, not only your current self, but your future self,
then I think you set yourself up far better down

the line.

I mean it's a no brainer. I don't know how
you didn't think of this before, but.
Speaker 3 (01:16:45):
What you said is accurate because when I hang out
with my buddies, invariably a player's salary or what he's worth,
or what the team may have saved for cutting him.
It's such a part of the everyday conversation.
Speaker 22 (01:16:59):
Or how much your buddy is paying to get to tickets,

and making these financial decisions.

us at about fifteen minutes. Also the head coach of
a Greater Cincinnati's newest pro sports team coming up in
thirty minutes. We'll hear a little bit of a Zach
Taylor as well. No major Bengals news today. Zach Taylor
did make an official Lucas Patrick is going to be
the starter at right guard, and that means that Dalton
(01:19:32):
Reisner is not going to be the starter, and that
is disappointed a lot of people we will see. The
bigger deal for me is the Bengals first injury report,
and obviously do what you want with this. It ain't
like fully healthy. There aren't questions about the roster because
there are a ton but I'd rather look at the
injury report on the first Wednesday of the season and
(01:19:54):
see no players listed than see any player listed. So
that is good news. Bengals and Browns. On Sunday at
one o'clock. We heard Joe Burrow earlier today. You know,
I Joe Burrow is the best quarterback in the NFL
as far as I'm concerned. He is not the most accomplished.
He's obviously not one the most I believe you can
(01:20:15):
call me a homer. It's happened before that. When it
comes to the mechanics of playing the position, no one
right now does it better. There are many who do
it extremely well, and reasonable minds will disagree and say,
actually it's still Mahomes, or actually it's Lamar Jackson, or
actually it's Josh Allen, and you can go wrong with
none of those guys. For me, if you said I
(01:20:37):
can have my pick of quarterbacks to build a team
around for this particular season, I'd be happy with a
lot of them. But if I have the first pick,
I'm taking Joe Burrow. And he's the reason why. Like
he's the reason why. Even if you are concerned about
the defense, even if you are ski optical about the defense,
(01:21:01):
even if you think this defense is gonna stink, even
if you are not drinking the kool aid when it
comes to the offensive line, you think this team has
a chance to be pretty good. I will double down
on something that I said last year, and I was
I was dead wrong, and that's happened many, many times.
(01:21:24):
Dead wrong. But I'll double down on the same thing
I said a year ago. And what I said a
year ago was if Joe Burrow plays all seventeen games,
there is no way in hell this team is missing
(01:21:45):
the postseason. A year ago, those exact words came out
of my mouth. If Joe Burrow plays seventeen games for
the twenty twenty four Bengals, there's no chance in hell
they missed the playoffs. Obviously I was dead wrong and
(01:22:08):
really not that close to being right if you think
about it. Though I was wrong, I will double down
on the same thing this year. If Joe Burrow plays
seventeen games for the Cincinnati Bengals, or plays in every
game that matters, allowing for he since Week seventeen, if
(01:22:31):
there's nothing to be gained in that last game, or
Week eighteen, game seventeen, if there's nothing to be gained
in that last game, if he plays all the meaningful games,
this will be a playoff team. I find it impossible
to believe that he will have played every game in
consecutive seasons, and in those consecutive seasons they won't be
(01:22:54):
a playoff team. If there's if there's one take or
prediction that I feel good about when it comes to
this team, it's that because I know what a full
Joe Burrow season looks like. When he plays a full season,
he puts up MVP caliber numbers. When he plays a
full season, we know the guys he has to throw to,
(01:23:14):
We know the overall weaponry they've added to it. Right,
Noah Fense, I still think is gonna be a nice
piece on this team. Taj Brooks, I think is gonna
have moments where you go, you know what, Glad they
took that guy from Texas Tech. Chase Brown has a
chance to lead the league in yards from scrimmage. I
believe that Jamar Chase's numbers this year will pale in
(01:23:35):
comparison to last season because last season he was otherworldly.
He could have three or four hundred fewer receiving yards
this year still be the best, or at least one
of the best wide receivers in football. Those yards and
those touches and those touchdowns and those big plays could
go to a lot of different guys, maybe Chase Brown,
(01:23:55):
maybe t Higgins playing a full season. Whatever your doubts
are about the Bengals in other areas, you look at
the collection of weaponry and you look at Joe Burrow
and go, that dude can play seventeen games. They're a
playoff team. Even if that wasn't the case last year,
I believe it now. I'd make that wager. I'd wager
(01:24:17):
an amount of money that matters. Joe plays seventeen, then
he plays eighteen because the Bengals are in the postseason.
The question becomes number one, does he play seventeen games?
Obviously there's an element of luck involved there. You can
play behind a great offensive line and still get hurt
because you got hit once or you know, Andy Dalton
(01:24:38):
in twenty fifteen played behind a great offensive line, threw
a pick and then decided to try to make a
tackle and he got hurt, never played the rest of
the season. So but obviously his chances of surviving the
year increase the better the offensive line is. So one
of the questions is okay, we all agree he's gonna
play behind the best offensive line, probably the best offensive
(01:25:02):
line he's played behind. But there's a difference between does
he play behind the best offensive line that he's played behind,
and does he play behind a really, really really good
offensive line. As long as the ceiling is it's slightly
above the best offensive line he's already played behind, then
I think there's a limit to what this team can
(01:25:23):
accomplish this year. Joe played all seventeen games last season,
you wouldn't say the offensive line was a strength. The
offensive line, at least this year, can't be a weakness.
I need to see it before I believe it. And
until I see it and believe it, I think there's
a ceiling on what this team can accomplish in the
regular season, which is why I've capped. And it's just me, man,
(01:25:47):
My prediction means nothing. But for me, it's a ten
win team and I don't go higher than eleven or
twelve or thirteen. Because they've been searching for a good
offensive line for a decade. Why am I to suddenly
believe if they've got one. Like some of the individual
players still and Fairchild looks like that guy has a
chance to be really good to Marius Mimms, you know
(01:26:07):
who knows. Maybe they've solved their guard issue this year,
but there's a lot that has to happen on that
line to make any one of us feel like this
offensive line could be a strength, a relative strength, or
at least not a glaring weakness. And then the defense man.
By the end of this season, the possibility exists that
(01:26:30):
we look at Duke Tobin and go, dude, you nailed it.
You nailed it by not doing all that much. You
nailed it by drafting Shamar Stewart, and you nailed it
by drafting Demetrius Knight, and you nailed it with some
of the more under the radar free agent acquisitions. TJ. Slayton,
I think is going to help. But you really nailed
it by just running it back with all those dudes
(01:26:52):
who got Louen Rumo fired and Al Golden. You squeezed
more out of some of those players than I ever
thought possible because I wanted a lot of them to
get replaced. Maybe that's what we're saying by the end
of this season. I don't know about you, man. For me,
I need to see some things before I'm gonna put
(01:27:14):
blind faith in Al Golden and these players into a degree,
Duke Tobin in this defense, I need to see it.
So here's my sincere wish that we recalibrate after four games.
I think the Bengals are probably gonna be two and
two after four. Although I give them no excuse for
(01:27:35):
losing to the Cleveland Browns, they should beat them. They
really should be two and oh. And if you're two
and oh, go steal one of the next two on
the road. But the history of slow starts being what
they are, the offensive line uncertainty, the mass of uncertainty
on defense, we'll see, and you know, the Minnesota and
Denver games are gonna be tough, probably underdogs in both.
(01:27:56):
So if they slip up against either Cleveland or Jacksonville,
oh you know, then you got to go win the
next two plus Jacksonville just to be three and one.
What I'm hopeful for, though, is they play the Broncos.
They've played four games, and someone like me and I
might not represent the majority, but someone like me goes,
(01:28:16):
you know what, I thought this was a ten win
team and now actually I think it is a twelve
or thirteen win team. Part of that is going to
be math. The math gets easier if you win more
games early, which this team has struggled to do. Part
of that is just going to be a reflection of
how they've played. You know what, they're showing the makings
of a defense that has a chance to be pretty
good and really good in the fourth quarter. And you
know what, this offensive line is moving people, and they're
(01:28:38):
doing things in the run game that we haven't seen.
And you know what, Joe's not on the run nearly
as much. I'm looking for a recalibration after four games.
Until we get there, I fully believe if Joe Burrow
plays seventeen games, we know what that season looks like
from him. It's an MVP caliber year. It's been the
case every year he's played seventeen games, and if he
(01:29:01):
does that again, what happened last year will prove to
be a one off. They will play in the playoffs.
The next step I'll believe they can make when I
see concrete evidence to suggest that the things that I'm
concerned about are going to be okay. That can start
to happen. On Sunday seventeen after five o'clock, Hey join

After five o'clock. For years on this show on Wednesdays,
we've talked about the Bengals with our friend Richard Skinner
from Local twelve and Local twelve dot com and Local
twelve Skinny, and that continues. He's back with us for
like year number I don't know what's it been, twelve
thirteen years? Thank you, Richard? How are you?
Speaker 7 (01:30:58):
You're gazillion? How are you mot?
Speaker 3 (01:31:01):
I'm sure sometimes talking to me it does feel like
you're gazillion. But thank you for joining us. Nonetheless, always happy.
Speaker 1 (01:31:08):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:31:09):
The last last box they had to check it the
off season because we you know, you've heard this, maybe
the Bengals have a hard time starting fast? Was all right,
They've got to get to the gate unscathed. Nobody's on
the injury report. There is therefore no excuse to lose
to the Browns.
Speaker 7 (01:31:24):
No, that's fair, and that's the thing I mean. Listen,
you know the change in training camp, practice time and
the factor starters played in the preseason. Okay, that was
probably an homage to the slow start, but the slow
start really can be circled into one thing, Joe Burrow
dealing with COVID and a rookie season, then Joe Burrow
dealing with seeing ghosts because he was coming back from.
Speaker 24 (01:31:43):
Major D surgery, Then Joe Burrow.
Speaker 7 (01:31:45):
Having an appendect toy, and then Joe Burrow having a
CAF issue, and then Joe Burrow. We weren't sure what
the risk was like, and it's really been something every year,
and then you pile on top of it a Jamar
Chase issue last year. But this year, no, there are
no excuses, and I think I think they fully expect
to hit the ground running. You know, you've got some
reps in preseason look pretty good, doing so offensively, not
so much defensively, but offensively. You did you know the
(01:32:08):
band's back together? You know, he han't really added a
ton of new pieces other than the two guards, and
certainly one of those we probably both of those, I
guess we should question at the moment till we see
them play. But no, there's this year, there's literally no excuse.
Speaker 3 (01:32:20):
Is Dalton Riisner going to be a starting guard of
this team? By like week three.
Speaker 7 (01:32:27):
I would say if Lucas Patrick doesn't get hurt. No,
I think if Lucas Patrick gets hurt, that's when we'll
see Riisner. I could be completely wrong, you know, maybe
Lucas Patrick is just as bad as some of the
reps he took in the preseason. He didn't take all
bad reps. I mean they scored on what three of
the four possessions he was in in the preseason or
two of the three, whatever it was, so they weren't
completely a dud. But yeah, I mean I don't think
(01:32:48):
you bring Dalton Reisner here. You bring him here kind
of as an emergency, Like, if this guy is a
dud or gets hurt, we at least got a veteran
who started. I mean, I know people are annoying Dalton
as a Hall of Famer already, and all those things
due was due was. Dude was on the street until
literally the last week before the regular season week started.
And there's a lot of teams. The best Bengels fans
(01:33:08):
think you're the only team that's looking for offensive line help.
Get your head out of the sand man. There is
probably every team not named the Philadelphia Eagles could use
some offensive line help. And yet all of them balked
so and I was, I'm not going to signing. It's
a veteran we've been on winning the teams, who's done
some good things. I just don't think that was a
plug and play guy. I don't think that was ever
the option because is well, Lucas is bad. We're not
gonna really want to turn to another rookie and Jaleen Rivers.
(01:33:30):
We want to turn to a veteran, and that's why
they signed ault roster.
Speaker 3 (01:33:33):
It is still remarkable to me that here we said
on the Wednesday before the opener, and and they've gotten
so much stuff done, right, say what you want about
the Trey Hendrickson contract and how it unfolded, and maybe
what it should look like. The dude's gonna play against
the Browns and Shamar Stewart's gonna play against the Browns
and they're healthy. I just I can't believe we're sitting
here on the Wednesday before the first game and this
(01:33:55):
team has gone eight months without adding anybody at safety.
How about you?
Speaker 7 (01:34:00):
I know that that was something that me when when
it got to you know, right up to the draft
and they hadn't addressed the free agency. It almost felt like,
well Malachi starts for Nicko Ma Laurie, one of those
two guys is gonna get back. I mean, it just
they got to get a safety and they didn't. It
came and went, Okay, that's sign there's another way in.
Speaker 24 (01:34:15):
Free agency coming. They'll get that safety.
Speaker 7 (01:34:16):
Then, and it came and went and got nothing. And
here we sit with, you know, two guys coming off
shaky seasons, and Geno.
Speaker 24 (01:34:23):
Stone and uh and.
Speaker 7 (01:34:25):
Jordan Battle and Gino got hurt for a bit in
the preseason. He's obviously healthy now.
Speaker 2 (01:34:29):
But if one of those.
Speaker 7 (01:34:30):
Two goes down, Tython Anderson's never played a regular season
defensive step. Maybe he's going to be really good, but
he's never played one and he's been in the league
for a while. Sajon Anthony had played eleven He's now
on injury reserve, So that means PJ. Jewles, who's never
played a defensive snap, is the other backup safety. I mean,
I'm almost floored that they didn't bring in a veteran backup.
I really am.
Speaker 3 (01:34:50):
I just think of so many mile posts during the season.
I mean, you and I you came on our show
right before the draft, that we were talking about safety possibilities,
and we were doing so at the outset of free agency,
and we were doing so right before a cutdown date.
That is, and look, if if it works, give credit
to Duke Tovid and Al Golden for you know, betting
on the dudes that they ended up having success with that.
(01:35:11):
To me, frankly, just as a storyline goes, the fact
that it's the same dudes and they've added nobody is remarkable.
Speaker 7 (01:35:18):
It is you know, I was told that, you know,
per chance the reason they didn't is whoever, that veteran
coming in would have to be a special team. But
if the veteran has never been a special team, or
how's that going to work out? And you know, maybe
if one of the two starters gets hurt, there's enough
guys out there perhaps and that's perhaps to go get
that guy and bring him in and you know, he
becomes the starter, or you know, at least a capable
(01:35:41):
backup to a Tyson Anderson if he has to start.
Speaker 2 (01:35:44):
But who, I think you're.
Speaker 7 (01:35:45):
Rolling the dice big time. You know, we saw what
safety looked like when it was really good with Jesse
Bates and Von Bell, and since then We've seen what
safety doesn't look good like, and it's been the last
few years has been bad.
Speaker 3 (01:35:55):
No question about it. Richard Skinner from Local twelve. Did
you see enough from schromar Our Stewart to believe he
can make an instant impact? You have to know.
Speaker 7 (01:36:05):
I would have liked to have seen something more in
that second preseason game that would have reaffirmed me. I
saw him wreck a bunch of second team dudes a
lot in practice. I saw him do some good things
against first team guys in practice. And again he wasn't
out there for a ton of snaps in that second
preseason game. But I mean, no, I mean, you can
correct me how I'm wrong. I mean he felt invisible.
I don't remember going, oh, look at Shamar doing what
it again. I'm not ere to say he can't do
(01:36:27):
that or won't do that, but convinced no, But I
what I saw for a chunk of training camp. There
is some real potential there. And I think the other
part of it is again that versatility, where on passing
downs maybe you kick him inside. I'm interested to see
when we get to one of those early pass rushdowns,
who are the four guys out there on a third
and eight and what does that look like.
Speaker 3 (01:36:45):
Yeah, we're on the same page there, Thank you as always,
we'll talk next week.
Speaker 7 (01:36:50):
You bet take him up.
Speaker 3 (01:36:51):
That's our guy, Richard Skinner from Local twelve and Local
twelve dot com. It's twenty nine after five o'clock. Tarn
has to day's show felt to you like we have
been driving a large vehicle where the breaks don't work. Yes,
I hope it doesn't sound that way. No, it doesn't
(01:37:11):
sound that way all right, But behind the scenes, it
feels like we're driving an eighteen wheeler and somebody took
away the breaks. That's what today is. That's what today
has felt like. I have I am so dis there's
something here I'm supposed to mention in. For the love
of God, I I just maybe Amy Wagner took my notes.
I have no idea. You know what it is to
(01:37:31):
make a low five o'clock a happy hour? It is.
Here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna I'm gonna put
a pole question up during the break. We have thirty
minutes to go. We're gonna talk with a guy named
Cedric Walker. Cedric Walker is the head coach of the
Kentucky Barrels, and then we're gonna I'm gonna put it
to a vote here because we have right now. We
have not had time to take phone calls today, but
(01:37:53):
our guy Mike is waiting on hold, and I don't
like to make people wait. But like I haven't given
out the phone number for the most part, for the
most part, because we've just been busy with a lot
of stuff. Now in the five forty five block, we
have Zach Taylor audio. So should we put it to
a vote and see if the audience would rather hear
Zach Taylor audio from four hours ago that Terren worked
(01:38:16):
very hard to cut up. Or should we have a
conversation with Mike. Should we put that on a poll
possibly or maybe we could find a way to do both.
We'll see. First we'll talk with the new coach, the
first ever coach of the Kentucky Barrels. Next on ESPN

don't want to make our guest wait because we already
had to move on as a sign of my disorganization.
I thought we were having Cedric Walker at five thirty,
and he called it in at three thirty, and it's like, no,
we were actually supposed to do it at three thirty.
So the new head coach of the Kentucky Barrels kind
(01:39:55):
enough to say that's cool. I'll call back in two hours.
We talked with the owner a few weeks ago. Arena
football is returning to a Greater Cincinnati the inaugural season
of the Kentucky Barrels. They'll play it to nku's Trust
Arena in a league called AF one Arena Football one,
and this is gonna be pretty cool. The head coach
(01:40:16):
is a guy who recently won a championship in twenty
twenty four with the Billings Outlaws. A warm welcome to
the Greater Cincinnati area to Cedric Walker, coach, It's awesome
to have you. Good afternoon. How are you.
Speaker 2 (01:40:28):
I'm good man, thank you for having me.
Speaker 3 (01:40:30):
I appreciate you joining us and adjusting your schedule to
accommodate my disorganization. What about what about the Kentucky Barrels
was an attractive job to you?
Speaker 16 (01:40:42):
Actually, it was more of Corey Cunningham, the owner, what
he represents. You know, he wants he wants the Cincinnati,
Kentucky area to have a championship team and it was
his goal. When I came down for the visit. The
people that the NKU know that Kentucky University where like family.
Speaker 2 (01:41:02):
They they came, it was like, you know, like I've.
Speaker 16 (01:41:05):
Known them all my life and they made it very
easy for me to make a decision for me and
my family.
Speaker 3 (01:41:10):
So you start coaching a team that doesn't exist, which
means you need to get players. Walk me through that
process absolutely.
Speaker 16 (01:41:20):
Basically, right now we're going through the uh the part
where you can sign teams, so you can sign players
off of like street free agents, but you can't sign
any of the team any of the players off of
the other teams. So right now, I've been in contact
with a lot of of the agents of players who
didn't make it on the on the NFL, guys who
(01:41:43):
are in the UFL and everything. So I've had a
good good luck with some good agents and we've already
signed our first guy, Little Bailey out of Drake, quarterback
with a big arm and the winner.
Speaker 2 (01:41:55):
We also got.
Speaker 16 (01:41:56):
Malik Malloy, who was a defensive linement out of Lincoln College,
and then we've got a couple more of that's coming through.
So once we kind of get into the agents the
September fifteenth September sixteenth area where you can sign players
off of other rosters, it will go pretty fast because
there's a lot of people that a lot of good
players that are from this area and a lot of
(01:42:17):
people that want to come to this area.
Speaker 3 (01:42:19):
What is something about starting a team from scratch that
maybe the public doesn't know.
Speaker 16 (01:42:25):
Well, you get to put your you get to put
your fingerprint on it, and you get to be able
to put everything and set up everything the way you
like it. I'm going into an organization where you know,
some organizations that I've been in that you go in
it's been through you know, turmoil, and I've been in
some organizations that's been around some great organizations has been
around for twenty plus years. So you take those the
(01:42:48):
learning expeditions from both from both spots, and then you
add it to yours.
Speaker 2 (01:42:51):
And you know what to do and what not to do.
And the main thing is it's being able.
Speaker 16 (01:42:55):
To start with scratching and create great relationships with people
that's playning be with you for a long period of time.
Speaker 3 (01:43:01):
Cedric walkers with us. He is the head coach of
the New Kentucky Barrels, which will begin play at Truth
to Arena UH this coming spring. UH. For those who
aren't familiar with the Arena football, one product described it for.
Speaker 2 (01:43:14):
Me sad, fun and affordable.
Speaker 16 (01:43:18):
I mean, you know, if you think about it, a
family Foork can go watch a game constantly, catch up
professional professional football and then be able to have autographed
signings with the guy who threw it or who was
catching it right after.
Speaker 2 (01:43:31):
So you think about that.
Speaker 16 (01:43:33):
Uh, I claim to fame and back in the day,
you know, we had some great players. Kurt Warner came
out of the a f L league. We've had a
couple more guys. I know that some people probably don't
know this, and we had this conversation.
Speaker 2 (01:43:45):
But uh, Joe Burrow, his dad.
Speaker 16 (01:43:48):
Actually coached in the in the league back Aye.
Speaker 2 (01:43:51):
Joe Burrow Senior.
Speaker 16 (01:43:52):
So we've had some guys that come through this league
that's created names on you know, Sean Payton playing in
this league.
Speaker 2 (01:43:58):
Uh.
Speaker 16 (01:43:59):
Also of the coach from Green Bay playing in this league.
Speaker 2 (01:44:03):
So it's been great.
Speaker 16 (01:44:05):
So we've had some We've got some good lineage that
came out as league and some great players and coaches
as well.
Speaker 3 (01:44:12):
Cedric Walker. The Kentucky Barrels begin play this coming spring.
It's exciting to have as many sports teams as possible
here in the area. Awesome for Northern Kentucky and looking
forward to seeing the on field product. We appreciate the time, coach,
thanks so much.
Speaker 16 (01:44:28):
No, thank you very much, and we appreciate you having
us and have allowing us to grow our product.
Speaker 3 (01:44:34):
Welcome anytime, coach, thanks so much.
Speaker 5 (01:44:37):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (01:44:37):
Guess sir, there you go, Cedric Walker, the head coach
of the Kentucky Barrels, who will kick off in the
spring of twenty twenty six at Truest Arena on the
campus of Enka. I truly truly thank guests. We set
that up and I wrote down in one day, I'm
(01:44:59):
going to take folks behind the scenes of the notebook
I walk around walk around with, but the notebook I
carry with like notes. And we had the owner of
the team a few weeks ago, Corey Cunningham from o'
Hill's High School, and I had said like, yeah, let's
get the coach on. You know, we had I forget
why we didn't do it last I was going to
be not here on Wednesday we were doing the show
from Arrowhead on Thursday. Really didn't fit, so let's do
(01:45:19):
it midweek this week, right, And I jotted down what
looks like five thirty, but it's three thirty. So the
dude calls in at three thirty, and then my man Taran,
who had nothing to do with this screw up, had to,
like sheepestly tell him, Yeah, the host is a moron,
but do you mind calling back in two hours? And
I wouldn't have blamed him had he said no, but
unfortunately he said yes. Sports Headlines, mour you didn't call
(01:45:42):
me a moron.
Speaker 2 (01:45:43):
No, no, no.
Speaker 3 (01:45:43):
Had you called me a moron, that would have been okay.
In that particular instance, I would have earned that Moniker.
Sports Headlines are a service of Kelsey Chevrolet, Home of

for the Bengals today. They're getting said to play the
(01:46:04):
Browns on Sunday at one. Lucas Patrick is going to
start at guard. It is remarkable to me, Richard Skinner
said this. I brought this up early on the show.
You would think that the Cincinnati Bengals when they signed
Dalton Reisner had signed Max Montoya in his prime. I'm
sure Dalton Reisner has a chance to be a pretty
(01:46:24):
good player. It's not at all shocking that he is
not going to start the season as a starter. We'll
see Orlando Brown, a guest on Bengals game Plan tonight
at six on ESPN fifteen thirty six. A round for that. Meanwhile,
the Reds and Jay's finished up their series tonight at GABP.
Reds have a chance to gain some ground. The Mets
(01:46:46):
lost earlier today to the Tigers by a score of
six to two, so as we stand at the moment,
Cincinnati is four and a half out. So are the
San Francisco Giants. Zach Lttel and Shane Bieber, who has
pitched in just a couple of games this year for
the Blue Jays, traded by Cleveland to Toronto and then
made his first start post surgery on August twenty second.
(01:47:08):
He is alrighty, he gets the ball for Toronto. Your
starting lineup tonight, friedel Marte and De la Cruz, Austin
Hayes DH's lux I'm sorry Austin Hayes in left field,
Gavin Lux DH's Spencer Steer at first key, Brian Hayes
plays third base. Trevino is catching Matt McLain at second base.
Also tonight, the San Francisco Giants on the road against
(01:47:29):
Colorado Reds are even with sanfran who has won nine
out of eleven. Hey, really quick. Our friends at bell

Tarren playing a song. Taror what have we got? About
five minutes? Three minutes? About three minutes? Did you work
really hard on cutting up Zach Taylor audio?
Speaker 2 (01:49:43):
I did.
Speaker 3 (01:49:43):
But you know, if people really want to hear his day,
they and go. They know where to find him. That's
a vote for Mike.
Speaker 24 (01:49:51):
Mike, go ahead, Hey, thank you, Moe, appreciate you, gros.
Speaker 3 (01:49:54):
Thank You're very welcome.
Speaker 24 (01:49:55):
Oh I. One thing I did noticed about Hunter the
other night was the sheet owns him at this point.
But he pitched a great game. But that boy, the
sheet seems to hit him like batting practice.
Speaker 2 (01:50:08):
It was weird.
Speaker 24 (01:50:09):
I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Yeah, he hits
Hunter Green like that.
Speaker 3 (01:50:14):
Nobody, No, you're you're exactly right, Hunter. Hunter left a
couple of Hunter through fourteen fastballs to like everybody. There
was a stretch in that game where like that's all
he threw and then he kind of changed it up
for Boba Shet and Boba Sheet made him pay.
Speaker 2 (01:50:28):
He did.
Speaker 24 (01:50:30):
Uh, Red's got a big task tonight, Beaver. Beaver hasn't
pitched much this year coming back from these injuries. He's
won on one, but he's got a two point three
eight and he hasn't walked anybody in three starts, and
he's everaging almost twelve strikeouts per nine innings and he's
been going about six innings per starts. So the Reds
(01:50:51):
got a big, big task to uh to deal with tonight.
Speaker 16 (01:50:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:50:55):
I think he's been you know, he's been really good
for a long time. Uh you know, folks, forget the
year that Trevor Bauer won the cy Young here in
the National League. Shane Bieber won it with the Cleveland Guardians,
and in many respects was better. Obviously. You know, the
last couple of seasons he's pitching, I think in a
grand total of four games over the last two years
(01:51:16):
because of injury. But uh, in it's not like he's
gone super deep into games. I think he pitched six
innings in one five and a third of the other.
But he looked like vinted Shane Bieber. He doesn't walk anybody.
He's still striking out dudes at the same clip he
was when he was at his best. And so you
are absolutely right. They have a tough task, but they've
(01:51:36):
got an opportunity. I think tonight's game is enormous because
I've looked at that met series all along as all right,
your chances are you're not going to sweep them, but
if you if you win two out of three, you
get the tiebreaker. If you win two out of three
and you shave it to three, you've got a puncher's chance.
You lose tonight and you're five back going into that
(01:51:58):
New York Series. It's good, and it's gonna almost feel
like they have to sweep them to get to two
back instead of being four back if they win too
out of three. I don't know if that made any sense,
but that's how I.
Speaker 24 (01:52:07):
Feel made total sense. This is that playoff implications. It's
like a playoff game tonight in my opinion. Hey, you
know who I really like going into this NFL season?
And I know the Bengals are optimistic, but boy, that
defensive moreris the hell.
Speaker 2 (01:52:21):
Out of me.
Speaker 24 (01:52:22):
I love the Denver Broncos. They What I love about
them is their stability and the coaching ranks. The last
two years, same guys, same offensive line, same defensive line,
added a couple of excellent defenders, excellent offensive players. Denver's
a dangerous team and I've picked them to win the
AFC west over Kansas City and San Diego at a
(01:52:45):
twelve and five record.
Speaker 3 (01:52:46):
Mike, I think you have a lot of company. I'm
not as thank you for the phone call. As always,
I'm not as sold on Bownecks. I'm sold on them defensively.
I certainly understand Sean Payton's resume. I don't know, and
I could be dead wrong about this. I don't know
if last year isn't the best we'll see from bow Nix.
Stick around because Bengals game plan is coming up next.
(01:53:07):
Orlando Brown will be Dan and Lap's guest in the
first hour of the show. And don't forget tomorrow we
are broadcasting from Top Golf the Anthony Munios Top Golf Tailgate.
We are excited to be there for that and we're
looking forward to Thanks to Tarren Bland for producing, Thanks
to you for listening. Have an unbelievable night. This has
