Speaker 1 (00:00):
So like twenty four hours and fifty five minutes from
right now, the Bengals have to get the roster down
to fifty three. I cannot imagine that's going to be
that hard. But then the fun stuff begins. Who gets
cut that the Bengals can bring here to be a
part of this team and help them win a championship.
(00:20):
Cut down days a big deal. I guess hi. I'm Mouleegar.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Thanks for listening. Hope you
had an awesome weekend show. Previews up on Twitter right
now at mogar thanks to Emery. Federal Credit Union your
your credit Union with Heart since nineteen thirty nine. Check
out EMERYFCU dot org. That's EMERYFCU dot org. There's lots
(00:43):
going on. Tony Pike is going to join us in
about forty minutes. We'll put up on in the preseason.
An utterly forgettable game on this Saturday afternoon with the
players who matter the most not playing. Des Ritter had
a terrible afternoon. Unfortunately, we'll get to all that with Tony.
He's with us three forty five, four and five forty five.
We've got some red stuff to get to in just
(01:04):
a bit. They do it again, they avoid getting swept,
and now they're just a game at a game and
a half out of the last wild card. They're in
Los Angeles to start a series against the Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Tonight with my guy Hunter Green on the mound.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
We'll spend some time on that as well, and the
latest on Trey Hendrickson Trays of our Lives. There has
been reportedly a different development, a new development in the
Trey Hendrickson saga. We'll get to that a little bit
later on. So training camp for the most part is
coming gone. I guess what they're doing now isn't considered
(01:36):
training camp. It's just considered practice. The preseason has come
and gone, and cutdown Day is tomorrow. This is my
question for you. Five point three seven fifteen thirty. Does
cut down Day feel a little bit more important than
it should?
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Here?
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Obviously, every team has to pair their roster down to
fifty three. Obviously, once that happens, every team should be
perusing the waiver wire to see if there's a player
or two who might make sense, might represent an upgrade
from what they have. Even really really good teams should
(02:19):
be every single day looking for ways to get better,
whether it's you know, by signing a superstar and free agency,
by maximizing their draft capital, or by you know, finding
somebody who can slide in and fill in as a
depth piece after teams have paired their rosters down to
(02:39):
fifty three, or in some cases, because there's been a
development in training camp where now there's an urgent need
for a player at a certain position, they go and
fill that need. Right after every team cuts their roster
down to fifty three, over one thousand NFL players will
be made available by four o'clock tomorrow. And surely, even
(03:03):
if you have a perfect roster, even if you won
the whole thing last year, the Philadelphia Eagles, they should
be sifting through all those names to see if somebody
makes sense. Good teams should be doing that. Bad teams
should be doing that. Championship teams should be doing that.
Teams that are rebuilding should be doing that. But doesn't
it feel to you like here here, where supposedly the
(03:28):
Bengals are in their super Bowl window, we're emphasizing cutdown
Day just a little bit too much, and doing so
by talking about positions that we had discussed when last
season ended. De Jon Anthony got injured on a Saturday,
(03:48):
which stinks. It felt to me like he had a
tenuous hold on a roster spot at best. But his
injury kind of brought to the surface how how much
lack of depth they have. I'm not sure that's the
best way to put it. And PJ Jewels played a
nice game on Saturday, and PJ Jewels looks like a
guy that you want to be around. He should be
(04:08):
on the practice squad. He made a couple of really
nice plays on Saturday. After one he got flagged for taunting,
which is stupid. It is idiotic. It is beyond idiotic
to have a taunting penalty in and a sport played
by adults. That's no knock on PJ.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Jewels.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
It's my take. If you want to taunt, go ahead
and taunt. It shouldn't be flagged. I don't know that PJ.
Jewels is the solution for what the Bengals should have
been looking for eight months ago. Like this is what's
frustrating to me. Cut down Day is tomorrow. We have
been talking about cut down day for a month, for
more than a month, not because the Bengals have some
(04:44):
tough decisions. I don't really think they do. Maybe you
disagree five point three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty, But
I have read like three or four different you know,
projections of the fifty three man roster, which what it
looks like tomorrow isn't necessarily what it's it's gonna look
like next week. But I've read a few of these,
(05:05):
and it doesn't feel like there's a real tough decision
at the bottom of the roster. Could be dead wrong
about that. It feels like we have talked about cut
down day, not from the standpoint of it being tough
for Zach Taylor and Duke Tobin to make decisions about
players who have been here. But once cutdown day gets
here and these you know, a thousand players or so
end up getting thrown on the waiver wire, Bengals are
(05:27):
looking for players who might make a difference. They could
be looking for their starting right guard. Let me think
about that. Jalen Rivers had a nice game on Saturday.
How do you feel about Jalen Rivers protecting Joe Burrow
week one, trying to block Miles Garrett. Or maybe it's
still Lucas Patrick who has had And I'll be nice
here and uneven camp like, it is completely feasible, in
(05:52):
fact likely to think that cut down day and the
you know, ensuing out after four o'clock tomorrow, we'll see
the Bengals at a player who could reasonably be the
starting right guard for this team, maybe maybe as soon
as Week one against Cleveland. It's completely plausible. But man,
(06:19):
think about that, Think about just that position for a second.
Bengals had offensive line issues last year. They had issues
with their two starting guards last season. Nearly nine months ago,
we went into the offseason thinking about how the Bengals
(06:42):
can get better at guard. And yet here we are
the day before cutdown Day, less than two weeks before
the first game that counts, and we're wondering, and I
think they're wondering, is they're a player who's gonna be
cut who's an upgrade from what we have, possibly not
(07:03):
to be a backup, not to just add depth, but
to maybe be a starting guard for the Cincinnati Bengals
when they're supposedly in their super Bowl window. We could
talk about the same thing at safety, where at the
very least they need depth. You might argue that who
they get after cutdown Day could be a better option
(07:26):
than who they have on the team right now. To
start at safety, how do we genuinely feel about Jordan
Battle at that position. I don't know that anybody says
feel great. So there's my question for you. Does it
feel to you like we are emphasizing what happens after
(07:49):
cutdown day a little bit more than we should. If
the Bengals are indeed inside their Super Bowl window. And
again I cannot emphasize this enough. Every team should be
looking at the waiver wire. Every single team should be
looking at which players are out there and comparing them
at certain positions to the guys they have. Every team
(08:10):
should be looking for depth. Every team should be looking
for upgrades. The Bengals are not alone there. But we
are talking about the Bengals acquiring players at the same
positions in late August that we were talking about them
acquiring players at in late December, and not that much
has changed. Yes, Cordel Volson is hurt, probably going to
(08:33):
miss the entire season. Yes, Lucas Patrick is dealt with injury. Yesday,
Jon Anthony got hurt on Saturday. Let's be completely honest,
even if those things hadn't happened, we would still be
wondering post cutdown day, what can the Bengals find at
guard and safety? Should that be the case when you're
supposedly in your championship window. I asked this question on
(08:56):
Friday Show, and it kind of ties into this, right
for a team that is supposedly in their title window,
it just feels like there's just a few too many
things that are unsettled, right like the Trey Hendrickson thing.
As of this moment, it's unsettled. Perhaps that changes today,
(09:16):
like with a handful of injuries, like with a handful
of positions where you wonder, why didn't they get better
during this offseason? Why aren't they waited till a cut
down day to see if somebody might be out there
that could be plucked off the wavewire. The season begins
in thirteen days, and yet we're wondering about the depth
and quality at certain positions that are the same positions
(09:39):
we were wondering about the depth and quality at when
last season came.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
To an end.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
That is astounding if you think about it, If you
just forget what you've come to know about the Bengals,
forget if you think this is the best franchise in
all the sports.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Forget it.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
If you think if this is the worst franchise on
all the sports, just say that part out loud. The
positions were one wondering if the Bengals can find upgrades
at in late August are the same positions we were
talking about them needing upgrades at in late December. Should
that be the case if they're really in their championship window?
(10:13):

Uh Tony Pike coming up in just about thirty minutes.
(10:33):
We have a lot going on this week. U S
opens up the season on Thursday against Nebraska. I have
a question about they're over under for this coming season.
The Rads over the weekend lose a really tough game
on Friday. They got blown out Yesterday Brady's singer or no,
they got blown out on Saturday. Brady Singer Yesterday was awesome,
(10:53):
So was Noel ve Marte. The single best story of
the entire red season next on esp fifteen thirty for three.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Moager, thank you for listening.
Hopefully you're having like the greatest Monday afternoon ever. I
am stoked for tomorrow. We're broadcasting from Oakley Greens from
three to six every Tuesday, every Tuesday for the rest.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Of the year.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
If you have not been to Oakley Greens, it is awesome.
It's indoor, it's outdoor, it's family friendly. They got a
good TV set up, awesome food, a couple of great bars,
they've got mini golf Oakley Greens.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
It's in Oakley.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
We'll be there starting tomorrow every single Tuesday, with one
exception Wednesday, October first, because the Bengals play on Monday Night.
We slide everything back. So if you can join us tomorrow,
maybe you could join us at some point this season.
It's going to be a blast every single Tuesday starting
tomorrow at Oakley Greens. Five one, three, seven, four nine
fifteen thirty. We'll get you in eight sixty six, seven
(11:55):
oh two three seven seven six works as well. We
talked briefly about the game yesterday. Brady Singer was terrific.
Brady Singer was terrific on an afternoon where it felt
like the Reds offensively, we're going to hit a lot
of balls hard and not have anything to show for it.
And then noelve Marte did what has become a noelve
(12:15):
Marte thing. He gets a big hit. He gets basically
an inside the park home run now and obviously wasn't
officially ruled an inside the park home run because the
throw from the outfield went off. Noelve Marte's foot ended
up being a triple and the run scores on the air,
but that tied the game.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
At won.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
His next at bat, he gets a hit in the
eighth inning, and this after the Reds and the top
of the seventh inning yesterday felt like felt like one
of those moments where you're like, all right, here's the
game we're gonna circle that they could have won but didn't,
and those are starting to pile up now it's almost
inevitable they get swept. That sort of thing. They had
the bases loaded, they had runners on first and second.
(12:58):
They bunted with Matt McClain, with which I don't love
bunting as an overall strategy. That one didn't bother me
nearly as much. Didn't bother me as much as Terry
Francona bunting in the top of the tenth inning on Friday,
which we have to spend some time on that, but anyway,
they load the bases with one out and then TJ.
Friedel hits the first pitch into a double play. The
Reds don't score in the seventh, and it just there
(13:20):
is no one who cares about the Reds, who was
watching or listening yesterday, who thought this team's gonna be okay.
They'll figure out a way.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
But Noel A.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
Marte leads off the eighth inning with a hit, gets
a base hit to left field. Dela Cruz flies to right.
Noelve Marte takes second, good base running one of those
plays that felt like something out of two years ago
where it's and made Corbyn Carroll make a throw that
(13:51):
I gotta be honest with you, I thought for a
second he was gonna make, not unlike the one that
he made on Friday. Corbyn Carroll has a good arm
eight outfield, as says this year. Noel Marte advances to second,
Hayes drives him in and then the Reds go from there.
Steer hits the big three run homer and the Reds
win the ball game to avoid getting swept for the
first time this year.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Noel A.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Marte is I think the coolest story on this year's team.
I think he might be the most important story on
this year's team.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
You could not have been.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
Deeper in an organization's doghouse than the one that it
seemed like Noel J. Marte was in back during spring training,
and by the way, he deserved to be in it.
We know how his twenty twenty four went with you know,
the half season suspension because of peds and then by
the time he's eligible to come off that list, when
(14:45):
he plays, he's terrible.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Noel A.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
Marte was not a was not a you know, didn't
get cut on the last day before opening day. He
was sent to the minor league camp with like three
weeks to go during spring training. Nobody he was talking
about him being a factor on this year's team. Nobody
he goes from that, and you know, let's face it,
Jamer Candelario was complicit because Jamber Candelario was terrible when
(15:13):
he was healthy, but you know, I mean he had
to miss time. Noelve Marte was added to the team obviously,
he was at third base until they brought kee Brian
Hayes to the club. He has since moved to right field. Noelve.
Marte is third on this team in war despite the
fact that he has played in fewer than half the games.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Like, we're not going to get.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
Too far ahead of ourselves and anoint him an All Star.
But the dude does feel like a foundational piece, doesn't
He feels like a very foundational piece.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
And more than anything, it's just it's it's a neat story.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
If you want to make it into a broader thing
about how this is why you don't give up on
guys when there's a lot of pressure to give up
on guys. That's all well and good. I just I
think it's a neat story. You know, this is a
guy who was an afterthought most of the offseason, certainly
felt like he was an afterthought during spring training, and
opportunity presents itself, he ends up taking advantage of it,
(16:14):
and now he's a vital part of this year's team
and a very big reason why this team has not
at least totally wilted from the postseason race. It's the
best story on this year's team by far number three
on the team in ops plus one guy who's ahead
(16:35):
of him as Austin wins. The other guy who's ahead
of him has played eighteen games for the Reds. That's
Miguel and Duhar, who's obviously been a terrific pickup. But
Noelvee Marte going from a guy who in spring training
was buried like dude was buried, to a guy that
as you look at this team right now, number one,
imagine this year's team without him number two. He looks
(16:58):
like he's becoming some kind of player, at least from
an offensive perspective. We'll see if he ends up playing
the outfield as well as they would hope. But what
a story, and it's happened in a very short amount
of time. We'll see what it means moving forward. But
batting three hundred good numbers across the board gives this
(17:20):
team good at bats, hits the ball hard, you know,
by the way, For what it's worth, they moved him
to right field, a position he had never played.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
The guy didn't make a peep, didn't turn it into
a thing.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
Reds have had some good stories this year, Andrew Abbott
being an All Star this season, very close to the
top of the list the additions at the trade deadline
on how they've been able to help. Noelve mart to me,
noelve Marte to me, which is not easy to say.
Noelve Marty to me is the coolest story. Go go back,
(17:55):
and in early March, I don't recall anybody getting mad
about the fact that they had sent him to, you know,
the minor league spring training camp. Felt like he could
not have been more buried on the depth chart than
he was. And now imagine this team without him, and
now think about what his role in this team is
going to be moving forward. We'll see, we'll see. But
(18:19):
for this year, it's pretty cool story. And in the
last five one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty is
our phone number. I loved one of the quotes that
I read from one of the Reds players. I read
it this morning. I'll share it with you. Coming up
here in just a bit. We're thirteen days away from
the Bengals opener, throw on the road, obviously against the
(18:39):
Cleveland Browns. The training camp part of the preseason has
come and gone. The preseason games part of the preseason
has come and gone. And now coming into perhaps very
sharp focus, what's happening with Trey Hendrickson. There is a
new development. We'll get to that when we come back.
Plus sports headlines too on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
(19:00):
Thanks our service to Kelsey chevro Lai home of lifetime
powertrain protection and guarantee credit approval from their family to
yours for life kelseyshev dot com. Uh, let's see. Bengals
opener is a week from Sunday. According to an NFL insider,
Jordan Schultz, who was on our show from Bengals training
(19:22):
camp last week, the Bengals and Trey Hendrickson have restarted negotiations.
There is quote optimism that something gets done due to
a little bit of a different twist in the talks
Jordan Wrights quote. My understanding is the two sides have
been exploring a more unique avenue to get something done
(19:42):
giving Hendrickson. Giving Hendrickson more money this season while still
letting his contract expire after the year has been discussed. Now,
that doesn't say that other ways of getting the deal
done haven't also been discussed. But that's according to a
Jordan Schultz NFL insider, Bengals haven't four o'clock tomorrow to
cut the roster down to fifty three players. They host
(20:04):
the Cleveland Browns a week from Sunday on ESPN fifteen
thirty with a kickoff at one o'clock. Meanwhile, Red's and
Dodgers tonight first of three at Chavez Ravine. Red's coming
off losing two out of three to Arizona but winning yesterday. Afternoon,
Hunter Green will throw against Emmitt Sheen, who's a righty
ten to ten. Tonight's first pitch on seven hundred WLW.
Gavin Lucks is due to be presented his World Series
(20:27):
ring for winning a title with the Dodgers last season.
That'll happen before Tonight's game. Some of his former teammates
will be presenting his ring to him. I would have
to imagine that he is the last of all the
Dodgers players who will get their ring.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
He'll get it tonight on August twenty fifth.
Speaker 1 (20:46):
Red's coming to play tonight, a game and a half
out of out of the last wildcards bought. The Mets,
who lost yesterday to Atlanta, take on the Philadelphia Phillies Tonight.
One programming note tonight it's the Mark Stoops Radio Show.
Preview Kentucky season that starts at six o'clock on ESPN
fifteen thirty. The Trey Hendrickson thing. Where was everybody back
(21:15):
in January? I mean, this can obviously still result in
a long term contract. Ben Solak from ESPN actually predicted
today in a lengthy piece about the Bengals and Trey
Hendrickson that he thinks the two sides will agree to
a deal that pays Trey on average of thirty eight
mil per year with sixty million dollars in new guarantees.
(21:38):
That would represent a pretty significant pay raise for Trey Hendrickson.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
But I remember back.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
In January when this started to become a thing again,
right asking this question. If you want him on the
team this year, and you want to do right by
Tray this year, but you have reservations about him being
able to help you or play at the same level
down the road, why don't you just give him a
(22:06):
pay raise for this year and tell him he's gonna
hit free agency next season. Now, that might not be
for you the most ideal set of circumstances. That might
not be the most ideal outcome. Perhaps you and maybe
even the Bengals would like to see something get done
that ensures the Tray is gonna play basically the remainder
(22:27):
of his career in Cincinnati. But I kind of remember
asking back in January, why can't you just you're going
to acknowledge he deserves a pay raise, which the Bengals have.
Why not just offer him more money for this coming
season and acknowledge long term? It might make most sense
(22:47):
if both parties ended up splitting, And by the way,
you could still negotiate with us, You could still sign
something long term. We still have until you leave exclusive
negotiating rights, Like why not? You might argue there's a
difference between that deal being offered to Tray in January
and that deal being offered to Trey right now.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
But I don't know what's so wrong with.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
That deal, Like I, Bengals clearly have at least some
hesitancy about Trey Hendrickson because of his age, and maybe
that should not fail to compel them to sign him
long term. But they clearly have some kind of reservation
about Trey Hendrickson beyond twenty twenty five. It has also
(23:33):
been acknowledged publicly by the people who run the team
because of the season that he had last year. Because
of what he has meant to this franchise since he
got drafted by the Bengals, that he's earned a pay raise. Okay,
give him his pay raise, Also give him a chance
to hit the open market next year and prove that
(23:54):
he deserves the kind of money that he thinks the
Bengals should be giving him. All the while, the guy
could say massive for this season, that is kind of
commensurate with what's happening with the edge rusher market, you
might say, well, there's a little bit too much uncertainty there. Sure,
from Tray's perspective, there is, but there's also some degree
of like motivation. All Right, you're gonna have to hit
(24:15):
free agency next year. You'll do so after you make
one hundred percent more money than you made in twenty
twenty four. Go have a great year. Then let's see
what we can get you. Here we are, though, same
place many of us were wondering back in January twenty one,
(24:37):
after four o'clock. Then there's still the possibility. I guess
that they trade, and we'll spend some time on that
here A little bit later on your phone calls are
coming up at five point three, seven, four, nine, fifteen, thirty.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
Tony Pike is coming up as well.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
He's with us next on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
He's a season preview report to you by KEEMBA Credit
Union on your official home of the Sinnati Bengals, ESPN
fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
SE's in preview reports, Tony Pike is with us. I
guess before we really started to preview the season in earnest,
we should talk about what happened on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
Bengals played a pretty forgettable game.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
And when I say the Bengals, a lot of guys
who are not going to be wearing Bengals uniforms in
actual games played and played a lot in that game
on Saturday. But did anybody in that game against Indianapolis
either help or hurt their cause to make the fifty
three man roster?
Speaker 5 (25:29):
You know, I thought it was one interesting that Mitchell
Tinsley didn't play at all, because I think that signifies
that he's made this roster, and you know why not
because of the camp that he's had. There's a Kendall Milton.
We talked so much about the running back room itself
and p Ryan and how IMPRESSEDWO with TODs Brooks and
what Chase Brown.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
Is going to be.
Speaker 5 (25:49):
I thought Kendall Milton was one of the best players
on the field all day Saturday, And I don't know
if that results in a roster spot itself, but I
did think he showed very, very well in that amount
of time. He was able to get the bulk of
the carries. To show what you can do when you're
getting the lion's share of the carries, I think can't
go unnoticed. I don't know what that means from a
(26:09):
roster standpoint, but on a game where you get you
get blown out, you have a bunch of penalties up
front on the offensive line, the defense doesn't really put
up much of an effort. You got to find the
individual efforts. And again I thought for the most part,
Kendall Milton was that.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
Yeah, I just don't know that they carry for running backs,
but we'll see. I thought Jalen Rivers helped himself. I
thought he had a good showing. I do not think
I want him starting Week one, a week from Sunday
against the Browns.
Speaker 5 (26:39):
Yeah, I mean, that's that's the thing. Here we are,
he's in preview reports. We're out of the training camp reports,
mow and we're having a conversation now about is Jalen
Rivers the answer at guard, which, again I hope Jalen
Rivers can turn it around. I hope that he can
become an established offensive lineman in this in this league.
But it's not the ideal scenario going into now the
(27:00):
end of training camp and the start of the regular season,
where you're still searching for what works best at guard
when you can simply had a whole offseason to do that.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
One more, as it relates to Saturday, Dejon Anthony got hurt,
and look, your guess is as good as mine as
to whether or not he makes the team. It feels
like his place on the roster was already on thin ice.
I've got to think they're gonna be looking at a
safety very very closely when the players start to get
cut over the course of the next twenty four hours
or so. But his injury, if nothing else, highlighted how
(27:33):
already sin they are at at that position.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
Yeah, it felt like deja vu to when Gino Stone
went down early in training camp.
Speaker 6 (27:41):
MO.
Speaker 5 (27:41):
It felt like, Okay, here's the conversation. They're they're limited
from a depth standpoint. They don't have much experience at
the back end of the defense, and that is the
last fine of communication that has to be spot on.
You've got to be on the same page as the coach.
You've got to be on the same page with those
other nine ten guys in front of you on it
every single snap. And when you don't have a ton
(28:02):
of experience back there, it raises a question. It was
a question when Gino Stone went down, it was a
question before training camp, and now with Dejon Anthony, it
remains a question for this roster.
Speaker 1 (28:12):
All right, Tony, thanks so much. Tony is back with
another season preview report coming up at four forty five,
and of course back with since he three sixty tomorrow
at noon. Bengals and Browns a week from Sunday live
on ESPN fifteen thirty. Our pregame coverage we'll start at
nine am that Sunday morning, September the seventh. That still
feels like forever away, and still that still feels like
(28:37):
there's a lot of stuff happening between now and then.
You know, a bunch of big Reds games U see
plays first college football week and first real college football
weekend this weekend obviously, cut down day that still feels
life forever away, but it's getting closer. Bengals and Browns
in thirteen days on ESPN fifteen thirty. Uh, we got
folks waiting. We've got time to talk.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
Let's do it.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
Five to one three, fifteen thirty. Ron and Milford. You're
on ESPN fifteen thirty Ron, Good afternoon.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
How are you?
Speaker 7 (29:06):
I am well?
Speaker 1 (29:07):
Mo?
Speaker 6 (29:07):
How are you, my friend?
Speaker 2 (29:08):
I'm doing awesome. What's up?
Speaker 8 (29:10):
I'm just glad that load management period is over? Load
Management's over right.
Speaker 2 (29:15):
Load managed.
Speaker 1 (29:16):
I will be I will not be here Wednesday because
I have to travel for the UC game. But yes,
load management is over.
Speaker 8 (29:24):
Not that I didn't mind speaking to Chat last week,
but you know, I was sure that's good.
Speaker 6 (29:29):
But uh, well, I think last week I caught and
I couldn't get through. But I caught the conversation of
can the Bengals defense win US games?
Speaker 8 (29:39):
No, we know that they can't win US games?
Speaker 6 (29:41):
And why is it Mo that they keep telling us though,
that they're not showing anything.
Speaker 9 (29:46):
Well, Mo, they have to.
Speaker 8 (29:49):
Show something, even in the preseason, because shouldn't they be
practicing these schemes that they're not showing.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
Anyone well, yeah, but you know, Ron, when they're practicing
those games in practice. Remember the how Zack Taylor's talked
about it and how good the Bengals defense has been
in practice. So when they're showing stuff, they're good. Right,
That's the went out of his way to tell us
last week, Hey, I'm seeing what I need to see
in practice.
Speaker 8 (30:12):
No, shouldn't we be showing the other team so of
it at least so that fans say, at least so
that we have a glimmer of hope, Like I mean,
no one has the glimmer of hope of the defense
being able to win us a game.
Speaker 7 (30:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
I mean, the thing is, it's it's one thing to say, look,
we're vanilla. We don't want to put anything on tape
that we're going to use. I saw, though, guys who
were just beaten physically, like just at the point of attack.
And let's face it, like especially in that Washington game,
it's not like the Washington commanders decided we're going to start,
you know, reaching into parts of our playbook that we
(30:44):
haven't seen before. I mean, it was vanilla defense versus
vanilla offense, and in some cases not exactly starters. And
yet those guys were absolutely working the Bengals defense physically.
Speaker 10 (30:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (30:56):
And a thing that I wonder about Trey Hendrickson MO Now,
mind you the money with a lot less They resigned
BJ Hiller a three year contract. He's thirty years old.
So I mean, now, mind you again, a lot less
money as we know for BJ Hill. But I mean
this has gone on and on and on, and I mean,
good lord, I mean I agree with what as you said,
(31:19):
what you said in January two.
Speaker 5 (31:21):
I mean, at the point of.
Speaker 6 (31:22):
Emphasis says they don't believe that he can give him
more than a year. Fine, give him like thirty eight
million dollars for a year, make it fully guaranteed. Who
cares as long as he's out there for a year.
Speaker 9 (31:30):
And then as you.
Speaker 6 (31:31):
Said, you know, if he puts up another you know,
fourteen and a half to you know, eighteen facts, then
you know, as you see the season involving you can
you know, try to sign him. And heck is we
know worse comes to worse. They could always slap a
franchise tag on there. I don't know, that might be
forty four million dollars, but who knows.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
Yeah, I mean, look, I ideally there's a resolution to
this so that this never become a thing. And you know,
let's face it, if Trey Hendrickson plays, whether it's under
the deal that he's under contract for right now or
a one year contract that's going to pay him a
lot more. The question about Trey Hendrickson in free agency
(32:15):
and whether or not he's going to be here next year,
those questions are not going to go away. The t
Higgins thing should have taught us that that even though
the t Higgins was due to be a free agent,
we still kept talking about him in Cincinnati and whether
you know that Dallas game told us that that was
going to be his last game or he was nearing
the end because he was a team captain. So those
questions aren't going to go away. So if you wanted
(32:37):
Trey Hendrickson to play this year and you just want
all questions about his future to go away, and go
ahead and pay him long term. If you're willing to
deal with whatever would come with not signing him long
term but ensure that he's here for the first game,
then go and give him an exorbitant contract for one season,
understanding though that the question about his future post twenty
(32:59):
twenty five though, that uncertainty, those questions, and maybe to
a degree, those distractions aren't gonna go away.
Speaker 6 (33:05):
Yeah, And then just one quick last thing though, who.
Speaker 8 (33:10):
So the depth chart now at right guard?
Speaker 6 (33:12):
Is Jalen Rivers now the right guard?
Speaker 5 (33:16):
I mean, who do we got there?
Speaker 11 (33:17):
I'm trying to figure this out.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
And I don't know.
Speaker 6 (33:19):
I figure and ask the man.
Speaker 1 (33:21):
So I think if if you were to, if you
had to wager on who the starting right guard was
going to be against the Browns, I think the smart
money would still be on Lucas Patrick.
Speaker 9 (33:31):
Oh god though, but but.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
I you know, I don't know how anybody feels good
about that. It could be Lucas Patrick. It could be
Jalen Rivers, it could be one of the other guards
on the roster. It could be somebody who's going to
be told between today and tomorrow that he is being
cut by the team he's been in camp with.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (33:48):
He was Dalton Reiser.
Speaker 6 (33:49):
But that's gone quiet.
Speaker 8 (33:51):
I feel like.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
That's gone totally quiet.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
And again like that that may be, but it's like,
if they really wanted Dalton Riisner, really really really wanted
Salton Reisner, wouldn't you make him an offer that compelled
him to say, Okay, I'll go ahead and sign now
instead of dragging this out even further.
Speaker 6 (34:09):
I don't think though, But remember the whole thing happened
with now mind you, and he's falling apart, as we know,
got cut by the Cowboys again.
Speaker 9 (34:16):
But why all Collins.
Speaker 6 (34:17):
Remember he left town and then like eventually came back.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
You know, Yeah, you're right.
Speaker 1 (34:23):
I just it's it's frustrating that we are dealing with
this amount of uncertainty at a position that we talked
about them needing to address nine months ago.
Speaker 11 (34:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (34:33):
Absolutely, I mean everyone knew that they needed offensive line
help and their answer was like, and mind you, I
don't know, he started fifty eight games in this league.
Speaker 8 (34:43):
You'd think, not that that necessarily means anything, but you
think that Lucas Patrick would be better equipped to start
at right guard.
Speaker 7 (34:52):
But I don't know.
Speaker 8 (34:54):
Maybe I mean Cody Ford, they don't feel like all
gone quiet on his front. I don't like they think
he is anything, but you.
Speaker 6 (35:01):
Know, the utility offensive lineman, he's basically the Santiago.
Speaker 8 (35:07):
Espinal and I'm seeing it seems like it's firing on
his front. So I don't know, But You're right, we've
been talking.
Speaker 6 (35:16):
About right left guard for good Lord at least nine months.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
Yeah no, and you know Cody Ford is dealt with
injuries during training camp as well.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
Ron.
Speaker 1 (35:25):
Awesome to talk to you. I guess like the Dalton
Riisner thing, and I Joe Goodberry our our our buddy
who we should actually get here on the show pretty
soon because we always talk about getting him on. Right
before the season, put on social media that he had
heard and then confirmed that the Bengals offered Dalton Reisner
the minimum. Whether or not Dalton Reisner is the solution,
(35:54):
the problem is, on August twenty fifth, we are having
similar conversations about this one position to the ones we
were having on January twenty fifth. And while maybe it's
not likely, it certainly seems feasible that the Bengals peruse
(36:17):
the waiver wire and find a guy who could end
up starting at guard for this team. Maybe, although I
doubt it, but maybe as soon as the first game.
That's not just because of injury, like Cordel Volson is hurt.
Cordell Volson was not going to be the starting right
(36:38):
guard for this football team. You know, it's one thing
if we need to find a guy who plays position
X when players hit the waiver wire, because we've suffered,
you know, we've had a player or two suffer injuries
to play the same position, or a guy you know
is just not going to be available. If I would
(37:03):
have said just make it January twenty fifth, eight months ago,
month and a half before free agency, if I would
have said out loud on cutdown day, the Bengals will
be in the market for a guard who could end
up being a starter, perhaps as soon as week one.
(37:28):
I don't think anybody would have found that acceptable or
even likely, and yet here we are. That's that's that's
extraordinarily frustrating, extraordinarily frustrating. And we can have similar conversations
about other positions on the other side of the football.
Five point three seven four nine, fifteen thirty. We'll spend
(37:51):
some time on Trey Hendrickson and the Gavin lux quote
that I loved coming up on ESPN fifteen thirty. All right,
that's us, Thank you five that before this is esp
IN fifteen thirty. Mollegar, thanks for listening today. Hopefully your
week is off to an unbelievable start, and as it
gets better and better, join us tomorrow at Oakley Greens.
(38:11):
That's gonna be a lot of fun. I gotta throw
out a couple of Poulp questions. We'll do that at
Mogar we U. We've talked a few times about Trey
Hendrickson and possible trades and solutions, and you know, all
of all of that, it has never seemed and we
have we'll take your phone calls coming up in just
a bit. Also, we've we've got to get to something.
(38:33):
We've got to get to something that Tito Francona did
on Friday that I would like to think, even in
these highly fractured times, we could all agree on. There's
obviously been chatter about Trey Hendrickson and a possible trade.
I read ESPN dot com today came up with ideal
trades scenarios involving the Bengals and Eagles involving Trey Hendrickson.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
I guess.
Speaker 1 (38:59):
Maybe I'm in the minority here. I often am. Maybe
I'm in the minority here. I view this season as
enormous for this franchise because you got a quarterback in
his sixth season, and you could say all you want
about he's under contract, he can't go anywhere. You have
an MVP caliber quarterback in his sixth season, you have
(39:23):
an offense that has a legitimate chance to be elite.
You're supposed to be in your championship window. It's a
big year for Zach Taylor. According to many, like what
happened last year cannot be repeated. What happened last year,
which I thought was organizational malpractice, cannot be what happens
(39:48):
in twenty twenty five where you have a player who
plays the most important position in all of sports, play
it at an extraordinarily high level, and you don't even
make the post season in an era where it has
never been easier to make the playoffs because of the
number of teams that make the postseason, you were still
(40:09):
on the outside looking at. But also argue, if they
make the postseason and they're one and done, like that's
gonna feel unfulfilling and it's gonna be hard to argue
that what the Bengals are doing is working. So this
is a big year, man, the big year. You only
(40:29):
get so many cracks at it with a championship level quarterback,
and the Bengals have one, So to me, whenever trading
Trey Hendrickson has been brought up, whether it was Hell
a year and a half ago, this past offseason, at
the end of the season last year, I've made again
maybe this is just me. It's only made sense if
(40:52):
it helps you right now, If it helps you this year,
you could have traded Trey Hendrickson perhaps back in mid April,
and gotten something that could have helped you this year.
Like let's say they move him back in April. I
don't know what the hall would have been. I'm not
(41:13):
sure a team would have given him a first round
pick for as soon to be thirty one year old
edge rusher who's not under contract beyond twenty twenty five.
I don't know. But had you traded him back in April,
let's just say they got two picks for him, Well,
those are players who can help you right now. Maybe
there's your other guard, maybe there's your other safety. Perhaps
(41:37):
there's there's some more corner help. Perhaps there's another defensive tackle.
Like that's so you know, that's that's always been the
lens through which I've looked at this, right Like, if
you're gonna trade Trey Henderson, cool, tell me how that
helps you make up for what you lose for this
coming season, because if you trade him, you know the
(41:57):
player you're losing, You're you're losing a you know, a
a very good edge rusher. You're losing a sack master.
You know, we could then pick it apart and talk
about what Tray hasn't been. He's never been great against
the run. You know, folks have brought up, you know,
the fact that he's never been a captain before. I
don't think that's insignificance. But he was your best defensive
player last year. You take him away from this year's team. Okay,
(42:19):
how are you filling that void? Not so much in
terms of sacks and who the edge rusher is, but
how are you furthering the cause of being better this
season without Trey Hendrickson. Well, if you trade him now
the draft has already happened, you're not getting draft picks.
If you are getting draft picks there for next year,
so they're not helping you for this season. If you
(42:40):
trade for Trey Hendrickson, you might send an established player
to Cincinnati. Is that guy going to be capable of
helping you make up for not having the reigning sack
leader in this league? So you know, the Bengals as
a franchise. They get made fun of a lot for
a lot of different things. Some of the things they
get made fun of for they deserve to get made
(43:02):
fun of for, like having boomerasize and come to town
and make him pay his own way for his airfare
in his hotel, like maybe some of the outdated ways
that they use to build their roster, and some of
the criticisms I think are unfair. You know, there's a
long track record of very good players they've given good
market deals to. They've had multiple players own the title
(43:26):
of highest paid player at their respective positions. But you
want to talk about something that will just have them,
I think, be the subject of scorn, mockery, laughter, anger.
Do that trade trade now? I don't believe they will.
(43:46):
I can't find anybody who thinks the trade is likely.
But if that becomes the option, if they are so
far apart, so far apart, either on guarantees or money,
and they've explored every other option, that now trading him
makes the most sense. Dude. Number one, you're just going
(44:08):
to be subject to a lot of criticism. You're going
to be subject to a lot of mockery. Number two,
you're going to have a hard time, I think, convincing
anybody that your team is now better equipped this season
than they were last year to compete for a championship.
We'll see, We'll see. Five point three seven, four nine,
(44:31):
fifteen thirty. I do want to spend a few minutes
on this Gavin lux quote because it included a term
that I I don't see enough of when it comes
to the Reds and Terry Francona. Terry Francona has done
a good job with this year's team. I haven't loved everything.
I don't know how. I don't know that there's a
(44:52):
manager who's ever sat in a dugout who has, you know,
pressed every single button correctly, has done everything that everyone loves.
But I I think he's done a good job with
this team. I think the whole like not getting swept thing.
This is a theme we've touched on a few different times.
The whole they haven't gotten swept thing is to a
degree a reflection of a manager who has done a
(45:14):
good job of keeping this team focused on the next game.
You know, one of his themes early in the season
was not yesterday's game, whether it was one or lost,
not tomorrow's game, not what we're doing next week, not
the next road trip or homestand but let's win today's game,
and so that whole you know, we make fun of it.
Do you hang a banner for not getting swept? If
(45:34):
you never get swept, you can't go in a really
long losing streak. And every single time, every single time,
it has felt like, you know what, things are starting
to wobble, things are starting to teeter a little bit.
Speaker 2 (45:47):
They win a game now.
Speaker 1 (45:49):
I don't think Terry Francone is the reason why they
won yesterday's game. I think it was Brady Singer with
Spencer Steer, It was noelve Marte. But I think he's
done a good job of kind of keeping this team
afloat when at times they haven't been playing at their best.
I think he's done a good job navigating a team
that has offensive shortcomings. I think unfortunately some of the
(46:10):
buttons he has pressed in late game situations with relievers,
those buttons haven't worked because some pitchers have been overused,
or some pitchers are just really inexperienced. But I think
the overall job performance in Terry Francona has been pretty
good this year. I give him a B plus B
to B plus, but he did something on Friday night
(46:32):
that I would like to think moving forward, we could
all agree that neither he or any other big league
manager should ever do that. Coming up in just a
few minutes plus Brandonman and Jones on Baseball, another check
in with Tony Pike as well, and your phone calls
all coming up on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
(46:53):
It's not quite the full list of roster cuts, but
the Bengals have announced the following I'm not sure any
of these will come as a surprise. Bengals wave the
following eleven players ready defensive tackle McTelvin Agham, Nate Brooks,
Cole Burgess, Quali Conley, Shaq Loyle, Rashaan Owens, Andrew Rain,
(47:14):
Lance Robinson, Andrew Stuber, Peyton Thorn, Craig Young. They've also
released tav and Brian, Tony Pike and I are going
to talk about this at four forty five. I'll say
this because I know I'm the des Ridder guy. Des
Ritter on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (47:29):
Was terrible.
Speaker 1 (47:31):
Don't have a better way to put it, Like that's
a that's a player who is always going to be
one of my favorites. He's somebody we've had on our show.
He is a UC legend. I say that, you know
in college, I never watched him and thought to myself,
g NFL starter. If you knew nothing about Des Ritter
and you watched him on Saturday, you would go, really,
(47:52):
that guy's started NFL games. You could still do worse.
If he's your practice squad guy, your third QB, that
sort of thing, you could also probably do better. Dez
had a chance to make a statement. Never really I
felt like, had a chance to really grab the number
two job from Jake Browning, and frankly, Jake had a
(48:13):
poor performance in the first preseason game, by all accounts,
had a good camp, played well against Washington. Jake Browning
is a top end backup in the NFL. So I
don't think any of us ever really watched Des Ridard
through the lens of well he could challenge Jake Browning.
What we saw from him in the preseason was extraordinarily underwhelming.
(48:35):
I'll be the first to admit it. Man, I'm the
guy that joked about getting his jersey if he made
the Bengals. But oh boy, you know now, you just
it's one more thing though, that you add to the
list of things they could be looking for around cutdown day,
we will see. Peyton Thorn was among those players whose
names I just read. Not exactly great either, But man,
my guy does a chance to be the starting quarterback
(48:58):
for the Cincinnati Bengals, at least for a day.
Speaker 2 (48:59):
And it wasn't good. Uh, Jeff, you're on ESPN fifteen thirty. Hi, Jeff,
how are.
Speaker 10 (49:05):
You happy Monday?
Speaker 7 (49:07):
Mo?
Speaker 2 (49:07):
Happy Monday, Jeff.
Speaker 10 (49:10):
With moving to Oakley Greens, I know Paul's an Oakley guy.
Will he still be on with you on Tuesday?
Speaker 1 (49:15):
That's a home game for him. So, yes, Paul is
excited to join me starting tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (49:20):
Right.
Speaker 10 (49:20):
I just didn't know what his commitments were to be
down at the stadium or anything.
Speaker 1 (49:23):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (49:23):
No, he he is going to be with me every Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (49:27):
Uh, he is going to be with me tomorrow and
uh and it's the best hour of the week and
we'll u God knows, we'll have a lot to talk
about tomorrow at all season long.
Speaker 9 (49:38):
Now.
Speaker 10 (49:38):
We don't start getting Joe on Wednesday till next.
Speaker 2 (49:41):
Week right correct September three? Okay, I didn't.
Speaker 10 (49:45):
I didn't figure we were going to get him soon.
So so't the uh with all this talk about, oh,
let's pick up guys from other people's rosters, What what's
the worst rash? Now, Oh, we're getting all our people
back off the IL, so we're going to be better.
Or we can pick up people that other people don't want,
so will be better.
Speaker 1 (50:06):
You can find you know, you can find diamonds in
the rough, and you can find players who are nice
depth pieces. I just using the waiver wire as this crutch,
as this like signature event of the offseason, where hey,
we're gonna get Like to me, it reminds me exactly
of that at the trade deadline. Her guy coming back
is gonna help us. He's gonna be our best deadline acquisition. Again,
(50:29):
many every team should be using the waiver wire. Every
team should always be looking to get better. We have
been talking about who they can get a cutdown day
since the middle of June.
Speaker 2 (50:38):
That can't be the case.
Speaker 10 (50:40):
Yeah, the Eagles cut this guy Lewis sign, who's a safety,
who is one of their UGA guys, the guy solid tackler.
If he's healthy, there is no reason that they should
not bring that guy in.
Speaker 9 (50:53):
And just talk to him.
Speaker 10 (50:54):
It would you know, he would have laid out Jayden
Daniels instead of doing the Jordan battle thing the other guy. So,
and you know Friday night you said, oh, what a
tough loss. I've been saying this for three years.
Speaker 9 (51:07):
Why was TJ.
Speaker 10 (51:08):
Friedel so far off base Thursday?
Speaker 9 (51:10):
Friday night?
Speaker 2 (51:11):
Boy, it's a good question.
Speaker 1 (51:12):
That's the one part of that that scenario in the
eleventh inning that nobody has really spent a lot of
time on top.
Speaker 10 (51:19):
I've said it for three years. One of the top
five problems on this team is JR. House And I'm
never going to back down from it. If there's a
sacrifice fly, he has to go back to the bag
and tag up anyway, Yeah, wild pitch passball three steps
is not going to make that big of a difference
on whether he scores or not. And I was just
(51:41):
banging my head against the table Friday night, like, how
many times do we have to see this with this
third base coach just saying, hey, can you take three
or four steps back? There's no reason to be that
far down the line with one out and you're the
potential game winning run.
Speaker 1 (51:56):
You know what was funny is so yesterday Marte on
the ball that got away, you know, where he hits
a triple in the throw I thinks hits his shoe
as he's sliding in the third base. If you watch it, Jr.
House freezes like he literally stands there and doesn't and
then he starts to point to where the ball goes,
and then he kind of, you know, tells noel Vi
(52:16):
Martine to go home.
Speaker 2 (52:18):
Like the third base coach literally his one.
Speaker 1 (52:20):
Job is to tell the runner what's going on, and
he freezes. I was watching out with my wife yesterday
and she's like, does a third base coach now he's
supposed to tell Noevi Martine what to do him like ideally, Yeah,
he has some idea.
Speaker 2 (52:32):
And then he finally like points to where the ball is.
Speaker 1 (52:34):
The third base coach, who is supposed to be the
eyes for the base runner, stood there and froze.
Speaker 10 (52:41):
Yeah, Friday night, all you gotta do is say, hey,
can you just come back to.
Speaker 9 (52:45):
The three steps?
Speaker 2 (52:45):
Take a step?
Speaker 10 (52:46):
The risk reward on him being so far down the
line just wasn't there again, potential game winning run, et.
Speaker 5 (52:54):
Cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
Speaker 1 (52:55):
So I'm much enough for today, all right, Jeff, thank
you I'm not sure that an outcome has ever felt
more inevitable than Arizona scoring in the eleventh inning on Friday.
Speaker 2 (53:05):
Let me come back to Friday really quick.
Speaker 1 (53:07):
And so if you don't know the play that Jeff
is talking about, Friedel's on third base. He starts the
inning as the magic runner, and do Harror did his
job to a degree. I guess hits a groundball to
the first basement, they move him over, and then Ellie
hits a pretty hard hit ball to the short stop
and they throw out TJ. Friedel double him off third base.
(53:29):
He was way too far away from the bag.
Speaker 2 (53:31):
I know. I know that there are many and maybe.
Speaker 1 (53:36):
You're one of them who do not like the fact
that I don't like bunting. We don't have pitchers bad anymore,
but I used to make fun of on this show
that when you would go to the ballpark and a
pitcher would lay down a sacrifice bunt, at times people
applauded that more than they would if the guy hit
(53:58):
a home run.
Speaker 2 (53:59):
I understand.
Speaker 1 (54:00):
And I'm in that generation, man, where you grew up
being told by your dad or your little league coach
how important bunting is and how it's the right play.
Maybe because it defines selflessness. I don't know. People love bunting.
There are a handful of occasions where the Reds will
execute a bunt and it doesn't bother me that much.
(54:23):
Matt McClain bunting two guys over yesterday because he's just
not that trustworthy if he's not bunting with the bat. Okay, fine,
he moves two guys in a scoring position. Where he
moves one guy in a scoring position the other guy
was already there.
Speaker 2 (54:36):
As a general rule, I'd still love to see the
guy swing the bat.
Speaker 1 (54:39):
But that rationale to a degree I can understand, even
if I don't love the decision. I can understand the
thinking behind it.
Speaker 2 (54:47):
Fine.
Speaker 1 (54:50):
But if there's one thing we should all agree on,
it's this. Even if you think bunting is a general
rule can be good strategy. You have to agree that
when you are the road team and you start extra
innings with a guy on second base, that you cannot
(55:11):
bunt there. Bunting a guy over from second base is
playing for one run. I think bunting a guy over
from first base is playing for one run. But it's
entirely different the story when you talk about a runner
who's already in scoring position. So on Friday night, Terry Francona,
(55:31):
with key Brian Hayes starting extra innings as the magic
runner at Jose Travigno bought him over. Now it worked
because the pitcher Curtis throws the ball away, Trevino ends
up not only safe, he ends up at second base.
(55:52):
The run scores easily, and so at that point, all right,
the runs in the Reds are up one. They're in
business with another guy in scoring position. Unfortunately, the way
the rest of the inning would go is McLain then
bunted Trevino over to third. Don't love that there? And
then TJ. Friedol flies out to right field and Corbyn
(56:13):
Carroll makes a great throw home and they barely get
Jose Travino at the plate. So the Rides only score
once Arizona ties it in the tenth. They would win
it in the eleventh inning. Come back to the decision,
the original decision to have Travino bunt, even though in
real time it worked. Can we just agree that if
(56:36):
you're the road team the game is tied, that you've
got to play from more than one run, knowing the
other team is going to start with the tying run
in scoring position since nineteen hundred, okay, one hundred and
twenty five years since nineteen hundred. In a scenario where
(56:59):
a team has a guy on second and nobody out,
one run is scored. One run is scored sixty one
percent of the time. There are certain variables that can
impact those percentages, the quality of the pitcher, which hitters
are up, but by and large it's assumed, and people
(57:21):
much much much smarter.
Speaker 2 (57:22):
Than me have written about this.
Speaker 1 (57:25):
If you have runner on second nobody out, you have
a sixty one percent chance of scoring. Obviously are not guaranteed,
but you have a sixty one percent chance of scoring.
To me, it's like when you're playing blackjack, right, you
always assume that the dealer the face down card is
going to be a ten. It's going to be a
(57:47):
King Queen Jack, right, or a ten. That's what you assume.
It's not always sometimes it can be a two, sometimes
it could be a four, but you always assume that
card is going to be a ten. I assume if
there's a guy on second and nobody out, one run
will score. So for me and Terry Francona, obviously knows
(58:08):
a lot more about baseball than I do. He's going
to be in the Hall of Fame as a manager.
But I think you have to assume the other team
is going to score one run, which means you can't
play for one run in the top of the tenth inning.
The other team is a sixty chance of scoring one run.
(58:33):
I don't even love you know, on Friday he had
McClean bottom over. One run's already in, So now we're
playing for one more. We're basically playing for two runs
at that point. Well, if the other team in the
bottom of the inning is going to start with a
guy in scoring position, that means with one swing of
the bat, if you score twice, it's a tie game.
The point is this, you might like bunting, I don't.
(58:57):
There are times that bad strategy will work and a
team will try a bunt and they'll score runs and
everybody's happy, And there are times where it might make
some sense based on the actual hitter that's at the plate,
But in a.
Speaker 2 (59:11):
Scenario where.
Speaker 1 (59:14):
You're the road team in the top of the tenth
or the top of the eleventh, or the top of
any extra inning, given the fact that we play with
this stupid rule. Now this is year six of it,
where we start extra innings with a guy on second base.
At the very least, I would like to think that
we can all agree on this. You can't play for
one run. You've got to play for a big inning.
(59:35):
You've got to play I think you have to play
for three. You cannot play for one because the other
team is a better than average chance of tying the game.
What's the point of a strategy when the game is tied.
If the strategy is to continue to play tiede and
when you play for one run, that's what you're doing.
(59:55):
It may work sometimes. Obviously, there's plenty of instances where
a team is going and through the bottom of the tenth,
at the bottom of the eleventh, at the bottom of
the twelfth without giving up a run, and in many
cases the team that has done that has gone on
to win the game. But just you can get mad
at using the math. It's not even analytics, it's common sense.
(01:00:18):
One hundred and twenty five years of baseball. It's generally assumed,
based on a century and a quarter of data, that
a team that has a guy on second and nobody
out is going to score sixty one percent of the time,
So why would you play for one run?
Speaker 9 (01:00:35):
Then?
Speaker 1 (01:00:35):
I don't care who the batter is. You know, chances
are the guys not going to hit into a double play.
There's a runner on second base, there's no force. Let
that dude swing the bat. You cannot play for one run.
So at the very least I ask for this as
me being the non bunting guy, I hear from people
who love bunting all the time. Can we at least
(01:00:56):
achieve this common ground and understand and that the road
team and x RA innings should not bunt? Thank you,
sports headlines, I'll read that name of guys. The Bengals
have cut again and we're there's an awesome event. If
you love the Bengals and you love to eat, you
will love this event we're going to talk about coming
up in just a few minutes on ESPN fifteen thirty
(01:01:18):
Cincinnati Sports Station. Headlines are a service of Kelsey Chevrolet
Home of Lifetime powertrain protection and guarantee credit approval from
their family to yours.
Speaker 2 (01:01:27):
For life, Kelsey chev dot Com.
Speaker 1 (01:01:29):
Hunter Green gets the ball Tonight, Reds and Dodgers first
of three at Chavez Ravine ten ten. Tonight's first pitch
on seven hundred wlw righty Emmett Sheen is going to
throw for Los Angeles. Gavin Lux is going to get
his World Series win before the game. Reds won yesterday.
The Mets loss yesterday, so New York leads Cincinnati by
a game and a half in the hunt for the
last wildcard spot. Mets start a season a season. They
(01:01:51):
started a series with the Philadelphia Phillies tonight. Bengals have
made the following roster moves. Are you ready?
Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
Here we go.
Speaker 1 (01:01:58):
They have waived these eleven players, McTelvin Agham, Nate Brooks,
Cole Burgess, Quali Conley, Sjaq Loyle, Rashad Owens, Andrew Rain,
Lance Robinson, Andrew Stuber, Peyton Thornon, Craig Young. They have
also released Tavian Bryan. Bengals have until tomorrow at four
o'clock to pair the roster down to fifty three players.
(01:02:20):
One programming note, are you ready the coach who hates us?
We don't even ask anymore because he says no. Mark
Stoops will host his radio I guess he'll be on
his radio show. Expectations are not massive for the Kentucky
Wildcats this year, but Mark Stoops I'm sure will be
at Jeff Rubies and Lexington on a regular basis. However,
(01:02:41):
tonight he's got his show at six o'clock on ESPN
fifteen thirty. For those of you who are perhaps new
to our audience, the first I don't know seven eight
seasons Mark Stoops was in Lexington. We would always try
to get him on, thinking, you know, a lot of
(01:03:03):
Kentucky fans in our audience, we do carry their games,
we carry his show.
Speaker 2 (01:03:10):
We'd like to get him on.
Speaker 1 (01:03:11):
And we were always very very flexible, like, oh, you know,
we could do it, you know, like the month leading
up to the first game, and we were always told
we'd rather not, And now we don't even ask so,
but we have a show to night, six o'clock on
ESPN fifteen thirty. Hey, this is an awesome event and
it benefits the Free Store Food Bank, and the folks
(01:03:32):
at the Free Store Food Bank they do the Lord's
work in terms of reducing hunger, fighting hunger and making
food more accessible to people that don't have access to it.
And this is beyond that, a really fun event. It
really sort of triggers the football season kicks off the
football season. If you will Taste of the Bengals, which
(01:03:54):
is going to be this Wednesday at pay Course Stadium,
and it's put on by the Free Store Food Bank.
If you love food, if you love football, if you
love the Bengals, you will love this event. Kurt Ryber
is the CEO of the Free Store Food Bank. Kurt,
this is an awesome, an awesome event, and I think
if you're a Bengals fan and you have Wednesday free,
it's a must and tend event.
Speaker 9 (01:04:15):
Hey mo, this is this is the party with a purpose.
It really is. When you think about it, you know,
all of the things connect. This is the perfect storm
of parties. You know, we've got the Bengals, We've got
the you know, fifty of the area's best restaurants. We
have you have some adult beverages, and we have some
wonderful opportunities to support Free Store Food Bank with some
(01:04:35):
live auctions as well as some silent auction items. And
it's a pay Course Stadium this Wednesday. As you said,
folks can go to Tasteothengals dot org and can get
their general admission tickets the two hundred bucks and those
two hundred dollars will provide the equivalent of six hundred
meals to kids right here in our tri state area.
Speaker 1 (01:04:55):
Yeah, the work that you guys do, it really is
the Lord's Work event itself.
Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
Let's start with the food.
Speaker 1 (01:05:01):
What I love about it is it's such an eclectic mix, right.
You have more casual establishments, you have some maybe higher
end establishments, all in the same place we do.
Speaker 9 (01:05:12):
I mean, we've got you know, Street Pops there, We've
got Haltman's Donuts there, but we've got Jeff Ruby Restaurants there,
We've got the Senate, We've got you know, our own
Cinna Cooks team brings out some of their best or
derves as well. It's dinner by the bite and you're
not gonna go away hungry. I'll tell you that. It's
(01:05:33):
going to be awesome. And it's just a great way
for folks to, as you said, kick off the Bengals
season and get ready for that Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (01:05:42):
That's right now, you're speaking my language.
Speaker 1 (01:05:44):
What I love about this event Among the many things
I love about this event, and we'll talk about Mike
Kisiki here specifically, but you get the players and coaches
to show up and They're always very willing to, you know,
spend time with whoever you know wants a picture anything
like that. That's always a very cool part of this.
Speaker 2 (01:06:01):
It really is.
Speaker 9 (01:06:01):
I mean, we started this Taste of the Bengals event
in two thousand and three. This is our twenty third
annual and I just can't thank the players enough. I
can't thank the Bengals organization enough. I can't thank the fans.
I mean, you know, we've got folks that love the
Free Store to come to the event. We have folks
that love the Bengals to come to the event. We've
got foodies that love food. I mean, you can't go wrong.
(01:06:25):
And it's just a wonderful opportunity for folks, as you said,
to give back to the Free Store Food Bank, because
we have two hundred and seventy five thousand of our
neighbors that are food insecure and eight out of ten
kids that are eligible for free and to reduce lunches
at school. Those are the folks, Those are the students
that are helped by the Freestore Food Bank and our
six hundred plus pantries across the twenty county service area.
Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
You've had a number of Bengals players who have served
as your ambassador or your spokesperson this year, it's Mike
KASICKI let's talk a little bit about that.
Speaker 9 (01:06:58):
Hey, Mike is just a real stand up guy. I mean,
we had him over here at our Community Resource and
Distribution Center recently with UH Conway with a podcast and
it was it was great. But you know, you know Mike,
you know, Mike understands the need out there. If he
has seen over the years, uh, the impact that this
(01:07:20):
event has had, and he told me, he goes, he goes.
I'm really honored to be part of this auspicious group
that have gone through and been our player host. I
mean we had Ted Carris, We've had you know, Sam Hubbard,
we had Double Top Packle back in the day. We
had you know, Big Wed back in the day. So
(01:07:41):
I mean, these these are folks that that have always
also been considered for uh the Walter Payton Award, and
and that's really you know, I take great pride in
the fact that these Bengals players want to give back,
they want to make a difference, they want to help
support the folks that are cheering them on but also
(01:08:04):
maybe struggling a little bit just trying to make ends.
Speaker 2 (01:08:07):
Meet Kurt Riverers with a CEO free store food Bank.
Speaker 1 (01:08:10):
Taste of the Bengals twenty twenty five is happening this
Wednesday night. It's also worth mentioning there's food, there's Bengals players,
there's adult beverages.
Speaker 2 (01:08:19):
You also have a lot of really cool auction items
we do.
Speaker 9 (01:08:22):
I mean, we've got you know, we've been collecting them
all along. In fact, we're just putting together a Bourbon
raffle for those folks that love bourbon. We've got some
great uh you know, somebody told me one of those
bottles was an eight hundred bottle. Eight hundred dollars bottle.
Why a bourbon. I don't know what you do with
an eight hundred dollars bottle. I don't think you can.
(01:08:43):
I don't think you can drink it. I mean, I
think you just had to observe it. But I mean
there's some sports melmobilia. I saw a Bengals golf bag.
So if you're you know, if you're coming to the
end of the season here in the golf season and
you're looking to replace that golf bag of yours, you know,
we've got a Bengals golf bag that will be there.
(01:09:03):
You know, there's a whole host of things and then
there's some live auction items as well where we have
events and you know, things that with the Bengals players.
We did a fouling event with the special teams last
year which was just you know, really went well and
you know, I was you know, I think the players
(01:09:25):
are out there, they're really engaged, they really want to
help out give back. But it's a great you know,
they said, it's a party with a purpose, and the
purpose is this, We want to create a hunger free,
healthy and thriving community that no tristate, you know, neighbor
has to worry about where the next meal is coming from.
Speaker 1 (01:09:43):
Taste of Theengals dot org. It's Wednesday night. By the way,
you could check out some of those auction items on
that website. Everything benefits the Free Store Food Bank, angels
in our community, there's no question about that.
Speaker 2 (01:09:54):
Kurt.
Speaker 1 (01:09:55):
I can't thank you enough. Wednesdays should be awesome. We
appreciate the time as always.
Speaker 9 (01:09:59):
Man, Hey Mo, it's great to be with you. And
who day.
Speaker 2 (01:10:02):
There you go.
Speaker 1 (01:10:03):
Kurt Rybers, CEO Freestore Food Bank Again, the website Taste
of the Bengals dot org. It is an awesome event.
If you love food, if you love football, you'll love it.
On Wednesday night, Tony Pike joins us.
Speaker 4 (01:10:15):
Next, he's the season preview Report No. By Hollywood Casino
on your official home of the Cincinnati Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:10:30):
All right, we're previewing the season.
Speaker 1 (01:10:31):
But one more look back on Saturday and we were
both watching Des Ritard thinking okay, he can lock down
some sort of position with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 2 (01:10:40):
That performance on Saturday, tone, wasn't it.
Speaker 5 (01:10:43):
Yeah, that was tough because you and I were down
there for so much a training camp now, and I
legitimately thought that he showed very well at practice. I
thought he looked good in the first preseason game when
given opportunities with the Jake Browning struggles as well against Philly,
I thought, okay, this might be something here.
Speaker 2 (01:11:02):
At the very.
Speaker 5 (01:11:03):
Worst, you carve yourself out a nice role as the
third quarterback on the team. The inability to make plays
against I mean, now I watch the game, I don't
I don't know that I saw lou An Arumo say
anything into his head piece. I mean I think Indy
was keeping it as vanilla as possible. He had his
head piece or he had the mouth piece up pretty
(01:11:23):
much the whole time. He looked relaxed. Indy wasn't doing
anything crazy. They weren't able to get much going offensively,
and that's not all on des Ritter, but you kind
of saw the issues that it plagued death throughout the NFL.
And that's just the bad turnovers at inopportune times, a
very bad interception, not able to get much going. I
thought Jermaine Burton could have helped him a little bit
(01:11:44):
on a couple of different throws that I thought Des
made good throws and reads on. But overall, there was
just so much more I think we were all hoping
for from from Saturday's performance with dez ridder So.
Speaker 1 (01:11:55):
Cut down day is tomorrow by four o'clock to Bengals,
like every other NFL team, they have to pare the
roster down to fifty three. I think it goes without
saying that what the roster looks like at at four
o'clock tomorrow is not likely what it's going to look like,
you know, just a couple of days later, certainly when
the Bengals start to prepare next week for the Cleveland Browns.
Is it a good thing or a bad thing that
(01:12:16):
I'm not sure that as of this moment there are
that many tough roster decisions.
Speaker 5 (01:12:22):
I think it's a good thing. I do think that
the fact that we're talking about so many eyes on
the waiver wire to see who could be released, and
it's not just like it'd be one thing if it
was like, man, they need offensive line help, so you
scour the waiver wires for an offensive line and you
can make the case for O line, you can make
the case for safety. You could probably make the case
(01:12:43):
for edge rusher, because I think Miles Murphy and Joseph
Osai wasted opportunities at camp this year for really good
opportunities that they had. It's good that there's not a
lot of battles, but I think it's a bad that
we're talking about so many different positions to be on
the lookout for as cutdowns can chick cantinue to happen
today throughout tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:13:01):
Yeah, I would agree with that.
Speaker 1 (01:13:02):
Tony Pike joints us again coming up at five forty five.
He's back tomorrow for since E three sixty don't forget
Bengals and Browns in Thirteen Days Live on ESPN fifteen thirty,
with pregame coverage starting at nine am.
Speaker 2 (01:13:14):
Brendaman and Jones on.
Speaker 1 (01:13:15):
Baseball is Next, Dream Hi Best Hour of the Day
michelob Ultra five o'clock Happy Hour on ESPN fifteen thirty
thanks to michelob Ultra, Superior.
Speaker 2 (01:13:26):

Speaker 1 (01:13:30):
You know, it's like fire pit season because it's you know,
we're getting that cooler weather now, which a lot of
folks on social media really seem to like because they
could tweet about how much they love fall. By the way,
call me in early November, tell me how much your
life fall then. But it's like fire pit season now,
fire Pit mikeelob Ultra perfect partners. There you go, grab
an ice called Mike Ultra and please, of course drink responsibly. Uh,
(01:13:54):
let's see, We've we've got folks waiting, and you know
I like to do this sometimes start the hour by
taking a phone call, which the Sports Talk Radio Handbook
says you're not supposed to do, but we often do
not adhere to what it says. In the Sports talk
Radio handbook. So instead of going by the book, we're
gonna take some We're going to talk to people.
Speaker 2 (01:14:17):
Tony, You're on ESPN fifteen thirty high Tony.
Speaker 9 (01:14:20):
Hey, Mo, how you doing, buddy.
Speaker 2 (01:14:23):
It's nice to have you, Tony. What's going on?
Speaker 11 (01:14:26):
Hey?
Speaker 12 (01:14:26):
I just find a little comical that, you know, the
Reds for five years have been looking for a bat.
Speaker 9 (01:14:32):
For five years, have been looking for a guard.
Speaker 2 (01:14:34):
Time is a flat circle, Tony?
Speaker 11 (01:14:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (01:14:38):
Other than that, Hey, what's your favorite brand of cigar?
Speaker 1 (01:14:41):
I like, well, geez, that's a little bit of a
loaded question. My favorite brand that you could pretty much
find everywhere are the Perdomo twentieth anniversary cigars.
Speaker 9 (01:14:52):
Oh, there you go.
Speaker 7 (01:14:53):
I'm a black diamond guy.
Speaker 2 (01:14:54):
Black diamonds are awesome.
Speaker 4 (01:14:56):
Well you have a great day, buddy.
Speaker 1 (01:14:57):
Okay, Tony, thanks so much. I appreciate that the phone
call short and sweet. The Bengals are searching for a guard.
Here has been my question. Does it feel to you
like we are putting a little bit too much emphasis
on cutdowns.
Speaker 2 (01:15:13):
Now?
Speaker 1 (01:15:14):
I don't want to minimize cutdowns and the waiver wire,
because every team should be in the market for players
who can make them better. You can find players who
can help you. There is a long list of players
who have been acquired by teams after they've been cut
by other teams that ended up helping their new team.
Whether you're a seller dweller, a team going through a rebuild,
(01:15:37):
a perennial contender, a reigning champion, obviously you should be
looking for guys that either build depth or are just
better options than other players that you already have at
certain positions. Sometimes a need emerges during training camp where
you've had a whole rash of injuries, and you know what,
(01:15:58):
suddenly there's an added importance on finding a player who
has been cut by another team. Like it's not to
say the Bengals shouldn't be looking for other options out
there every day of the year, every day of the year,
no matter where they come from, whether they're undrafted, college
free agents, whether they are players who have been you
have you know a lister type free agents who have
(01:16:21):
left their team they've been on because their contract is
whatever it is. You should always be looking for help,
always be looking for upgrades regardless. But doesn't it feel
to you like there's a little bit too much emphasis
on cutdown day for this team, This year, especially given
the fact that they're supposed to be in their Super
(01:16:42):
Bowl window. Like NFL rosters get pared down to fifty
three by tomorrow at four o'clock and there are gonna
be thousands of players who hit the waiver wire. It
is not beyond the realm of possibility that the BEng
find a starting guard on the waiver wire. Maybe not
(01:17:04):
for Week one, but at some point this year, like
you can make the argument the Bengals will find a
player on the waiver wire who's better than Lucas Patrick
or Jalen Rivers or maybe Cody Ford. Perhaps that's not likely,
it's certainly plausible. It would be one thing if you
(01:17:27):
know what Bengals went to training camp, guard was locked down,
and then this dude got hurt, then this guy got hurt,
and then this guy. That ain't the case here, man.
They've dealt with injury obviously, But isn't that kind of
troubling to you? It's guard. How many times during last year,
(01:17:49):
the season, not even the offseason. During last year do
we talk about how guard play is substandard? Guard play
isn't what it needs to be. Guard play needs to
be a dressed This offseason, have you really successfully addressed
guard play. If we're prioritizing when other teams cut the
(01:18:09):
players they don't want. What adds to the frustration, maybe
for you, certainly for me, is that it ain't just guard.
We're talking about Dayjoon Anthony's injury. Hopefully it's not serious,
Hopefully he's okay. But the injury that he suffered on Saturday,
(01:18:30):
as already a player who appeared to be on shaky ground,
further highlighted their lack of depth at safety. It is
completely plausible that the Bengals find a safety on the
waiver wire who ends up playing a decent amount. It
(01:18:51):
ain't like we didn't talk about safety often last year.
It ain't like we didn't talk about safety when the
offseason started. That's a couple of different positions where it
feels like, not only can they find somebody who could
help out on the waiver wire, but they need to
find somebody who could help on the waiver wire. By
(01:19:13):
the way, starting at four o'clock tomorrow, the opener, the
first game that counts will be twelve days away. I
don't know, man, And maybe they find guys who are
instantly better than the players the Bengals have right now.
Maybe the players the Bengals have right now end up
playing great. And this is a mere footnote, but I
(01:19:37):
asked this week. I asked this. I asked you last
week that with the opener approaching, the Bengals apparently or
supposedly i should say, in their championship window, doesn't it
feel like there are just a few too many things
that are unsettled? The Trey Henderson situation, what's happening on
(01:19:59):
the offensive line, guard, defensive tackle, edge rusher, safety, Like,
there's a lot of areas that are just unsettled. Not
pretty much, every NFL team has a question. Every NFL
team probably has an area that's unsettled. The really good ones,
you would think, have fewer things that are unsettled than
(01:20:19):
the really bad ones. Bengals are supposed to be a
really good team, right that's.
Speaker 2 (01:20:25):
Kind of the window they're supposed to be in.
Speaker 1 (01:20:28):
It feels like things are really really unsettled relative to
how good the team is supposed to be and where
we are in the calendar.
Speaker 2 (01:20:37):
Add to it.
Speaker 1 (01:20:38):
This, it feels like the Bengals are really reliant on
players who are getting cut by other teams to perhaps
help them this season, especially if you consider that the
Bengals are supposed to be in their championship window.
Speaker 2 (01:20:56):
So we have that.
Speaker 1 (01:20:57):
We also have the latest on Trey Hendrickson Jordan Schultz
new friend of the Show, Jordan Schultz. NFL Inside reports
the Bengals have restarted talks with Trey Hendrickson on a
new deal for twenty twenty five, and Jordan tweets. My
understanding is the two sides have been exploring a more
unique avenue to get something done, giving Hendrickson more money
(01:21:18):
this season while still letting his contract expire at the
end of the year. That has been discussed. A source says, quote,
more work to do, but there's cautious optimism. I want
to know if I'm in the minority here whether or
not Trey Hendrickson signs a long term deal. I don't
want to say I don't care, but I don't care
(01:21:40):
as much as is he gonna be on the field.
A week from Sunday, Drew Westerheide breaking in with the
breaking news alert, what do you got, Drew?
Speaker 12 (01:21:51):
According to rap sheet, Trey Hendrickson is closing in on
a new contract.
Speaker 1 (01:21:56):
Really, do we have any Yeah, we have any deep details.
Speaker 2 (01:22:03):
Just the tweet from in Rapaport.
Speaker 12 (01:22:04):
The Bengals are closing in on an agreement with NFL
sacked leader Trey Hendrickson on a new contract for me
and Tom Polsero, making him one of the NFL's highest
paid defenders for twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (01:22:14):
All right, so Ian Rappaport writes, the Bengals have rewarded
one of their stars. The Bengals are closing in on
an agreement with NFL sack leader Trey Hendrickson on a
new contract, making him one of the NFL's highest paid
defenders defenders defenders for twenty twenty five. Uh, he writes,
(01:22:35):
it's a big raise this year in a deal done
by Harold Lewis of at NSA Football. So are we
reading that as it's a new contract, one of the
highest paid defenders for twenty twenty five, a big raise
this year. It doesn't say multi year deal, it doesn't
(01:22:56):
say long term contract. Highest paid defender for twenty twenty five.
So is this a result of the negotiations that Jordan
Schultz reported, which was a deal that would pay Tray
more By the way, you know, Duke Tobin said it
on mock Turtle Soup Day back on July. What was
(01:23:16):
that July twenty first? Trade deserves a raise all along,
they have offered him a raise. Trade deserves a raise.
He was due to make like sixteen mil this season,
so they've given him a raise. If I'm reading this correct,
it's a one year deal. Again, it doesn't say multi
year contract. It just has new contract, which could be
(01:23:41):
ripping up the old one signing him to a new one.
You know the point that I was making, and then
Drew broke in, and we do appreciate that.
Speaker 2 (01:23:49):
Drew, thanks so much.
Speaker 1 (01:23:52):
Whether or not it's long term, whether or not it's
a deal that makes him the most highest paid edge
rusher in the sport. Really, one thing matters. Is he
on the field against the Cleveland Browns? Is he on
the field for seventeen games this season? And is he
(01:24:14):
on the field to help al Golden take this defense
from what it was to what it needs to be.
If that has to come at the cost of paying
him more than they would like to down the road,
then fine. And if that has to come under a
one year contract that is going to not totally eliminate
(01:24:37):
the questions about what's next, then that's okay as well,
like one thing matters, one thing matters above all, does
he play against the Browns?
Speaker 2 (01:24:47):
Does he play this season?
Speaker 1 (01:24:52):
I think you're also being fair if you wonder, like,
why couldn't this have been an option? If this is
the case here, if it's a one year contract, why
couldn't this have been settled months ago? Why couldn't this
have been a thing, you know, back in April or
mang But according to Ian Rappaport, Bengals closing in on
(01:25:13):
an agreement with Trey Hendrickson on a new contract which
will make him one of the NFL's highest paid defenders
for twenty twenty five. Eddie writes, it's a big rays
this year.
Speaker 2 (01:25:25):
Not down the road.
Speaker 1 (01:25:27):
Perhaps some clarification between now and six o'clock, but all
signs point to the Trey Hendrickson matter being settled, at
least for now.
Speaker 2 (01:25:36):
And if it is indeed a one year.
Speaker 1 (01:25:38):
At contract, then as the season unfolds, there will only
be more questions about where he'll play in twenty twenty six,
meaning the Trey Hendrickson thing is probably not going to
go away. It's eighteen minutes after five o'clock. Your phone
calls are welcome on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station.
Speaker 2 (01:25:57):
I don't do this often.
Speaker 1 (01:25:58):
Back in early Jane Warry, why can't you just sign
him to a one year contract and give him a
big pay raise. If you have reservations about his productivity
in twenty twenty six, don't sign him for twenty twenty six.
Speaker 2 (01:26:10):
Pay him a boat load.
Speaker 1 (01:26:11):
Now, give him a two d and fifty percent raise,
have him have a great year, and then let him
hit free agency. So In Rapaport of NFL Media confirms
it is a one year contract, one year solution. He
is gonna be one of the highest paid defenders in
twenty twenty five. I've seen no specifics money wise. Rapaport
(01:26:32):
reports that Hendrickson is at the at the facility finalizing
it right now.
Speaker 2 (01:26:36):
Let's be honest.
Speaker 1 (01:26:37):
By recent Bengals standards, this is an early solution. You know,
as has been pointed out many times. You know, the
Jamar Chase thing went right down to the wire last year.
We were wondering the morning of the first game, is
he gonna play? Is he not gonna play? Is he
gonna sit out?
Speaker 2 (01:26:52):
He played?
Speaker 1 (01:26:53):
Didn't get the deal done until the offseason. Joe Mixon,
aj Green, Joe Burrow himself recently have gotten deals by
this team, somewhat recently in some cases from this team,
and it went up into the very last minute. Trey
Hendrickson gets done thirteen days before the opener. I'll be
honest with you, a whole hell of a lot of
us who thought this was gonna be the sort of
(01:27:13):
thing that lasted to the first week, meaning like next week,
the week leading up to Cleveland. So by Bengals standards,
this is an early resolution, and frankly, for what both
sides wanted, I think it's perfect.
Speaker 2 (01:27:28):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:27:28):
We will see what happens with Trey Hendrickson at the
end of this season, but for right now, Trey gets
a raise. He gets a raised commensurate to what's happened
with the market at Edge Rusher. He gets a raised
commensurate with his value to the team. I'm gonna imagine
(01:27:48):
that the Rays if he was gonna get like sixteen
on the old deal, I'm sure this more than doubles
that maybe pushes it to like thirty five thirty six. Again,
I've not seen specifics on the dollar value here. He
gets a massive raise, deservedly, so a massive raise, the
(01:28:11):
Bengals don't have to commit to him beyond this season.
I mean, legitimately, this felt like this felt like the
best possible compromise. It felt so good that many of
us wondered back in January, why can't this be the deal?
I could understand both sides spending time talking about something
long term. You cannot blame Trey Hendrickson at all for wanting,
(01:28:34):
you know, two three years and getting all the money
he can guaranteed. You can't blame him for that. You
certainly can't blame the Bengals for at least engaging their
star edge defender in discussions about something potentially long term,
but they clearly clearly had reservations about his production post
twenty twenty five. Well, now Trey Hendrickson might not be
(01:28:55):
their player post twenty twenty five, although he could still be.
Trey gets a chance to make a lot more money
this year, and then he can hit free agency next
season with the edge rusher market having exploded. If he
has a great year this year, somebody's gonna pay him.
Speaker 2 (01:29:13):
I think, as.
Speaker 1 (01:29:13):
Compromises go, I'm sure I know there's a world where
Trey Hendrickson would have liked a fully guaranteed three year contract. Okay,
in the absence of that, he gets a massive pay
raise this year, and he can hit free agency next
offseason if he has a great year, and the Bengals
(01:29:35):
still have an opportunity to negotiate with him next offseason. Hell,
they can negotiate with him during the season this year
if they want, although that's typically not what they do.
They get their best defensive player on the team this year,
there are no questions about whether he plays in the
first game, and they don't have to commit to him
beyond twenty twenty five, which they clearly had reservations about doing.
(01:29:58):
Like what have we said now from months, find some
common ground, find room in the middle, find a reasonable compromise. Meanwhile,
Shamar Stewart gets this season to prove that he could
be effectively the air apparent to Trey Hendrickson. They can
learn more about Miles Murphy. Let's be honest, what we've
(01:30:19):
learned a lot about what we've learned about Miles Murphy
this offseason hasn't been awesome, largely because he's been hurt.
Joseph Osiah's unfortunately had a pretty underwhelming preseason. But you
have between now and the end of the season to
figure out what you have with those guys. Maybe Shamar
Stewart is awesome as a rookie, you know, and you
have for what it's worth. The very very very recent
(01:30:41):
development of t Higgins going from a guy who looked
like he was going to be a free agent to
a player who locked in with the Bengals long term.
Maybe this kicks the can down the sidewalk for a
few months. Maybe at the end of the day, Trey
Hendrickson at the end of the season is going to
tell the Bengals to pound salt and he goes and
he finds a long term deal somewhere else, and he
(01:31:03):
makes the Bengals regret not signing him long term. But
in the short term, Al Golden gets his best returning
player from last year. Trey Hendrickson gets a massive raise.
The Bengals can prepare for the first game without any
sort of Trey Hendrickson issue looming over their preparation. If
Shamar Stewart's as good as we think he can be,
(01:31:25):
they can pare him with Trey Hendrickson like this. I
think this is maybe not the best possible outcome, but
it's an outcome that on some level always made sense.
It is completely reasonable to go, why couldn't they have
just done this back in March? Why couldn't they have
done this back in May? It doesn't matter. They got
(01:31:47):
it done now and the outcome is reasonable. You know
my take on this, and maybe it's just me. My
take on this has been all along that neither side's
basic premise is wrong. By the way, you're phone calls
on this will welcome. We'll grab some here in a
bit five, one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty. Neither
side's basic premise is incorrect, and I sincerely hope this
(01:32:12):
is the last time we have to talk about this,
at least until next offseason. Trey's basic premise was I'm
one of the best edge rushers in football. I'm the
best defensive player on this team. I want to be
paid accordingly. I want to capitalize on the great season
that I had. That is not at all an improper
way of looking at things, and the Bengals basic premise
(01:32:35):
has been we think there's a pretty good chance your
best years have already happened.
Speaker 2 (01:32:40):
We will give you a pay raise.
Speaker 1 (01:32:42):
We're not nuts about fully and completely committing to you
once you're thirty one to thirty two, maybe thirty three
years old. Not an unfair premise at all. They meet
the middle. Maybe the middle is not where they've met,
but they've He's met at a place where Look, at
the end of the day, I was talking about this
(01:33:03):
before we found out that this got done. And if
you're just joining as Trey Hendrickson, According to Ian Rappaport,
is set to sign a one year contract with the
Bengals for this season that will make him among the
highest paid defensive players in the sport. The dude's gonna
play against the Cleveland Browns at the end of the day.
At the end of it all, that's the one thing
(01:33:23):
any of us really cared about most, is dude gonna
play against Cleveland? Is guy gonna miss games this year?
And if the answer is yes, how many games will
he miss? And had his al golden fix a defense
that will not have its best player from a year ago,
that's out the window, and it's out the window with
more time to spare than usual, I think, And you
(01:33:47):
know again, man like he he may be the defensive
player of the year in the sport this season, and
the Bengals have no chance of signing him long term.
Maybe he proves he has more left in the tank
than the Bengals think, and if the opposite happens and
his production dips and he regresses a little bit, and
the Bengals can go, Okay, you know what, maybe we
dodge something here. Maybe we dodged having to commit a
(01:34:10):
lot of money to a player whose best seasons are
in the rearview mirror. Chances are Trey is going to
be very good this season, and he's going to be
paid what he should be paid, which is, you know,
a deal that makes them among the highest paid defensive
players on the sport because he was one of the
best defensive players in the sport last season.
Speaker 2 (01:34:29):
I think this is a good outcome.
Speaker 1 (01:34:33):
I don't know if folks around the country are going
to take wax of the Bengals for not getting something
long term done. I don't know that we're totally free
and clear off anymore Trey Hendrickson controversies, because I'm sure
he's going to be asked as the season goes on
about his future and free agency and whether or not
he would entertain coming back to the Bengals. Like I'm
(01:34:55):
sure that's not entirely going away, but he's going to
play against the Browns. It's gonna be on the field
week one. And while there are already just baked in
dozens of questions about the Bengals defensively, it's easier to
feel better about those answers knowing you'll have Trey Hendrickson.
(01:35:16):
And by the way, and I'm hopeful for this, Like
I love a lot of what I've watched from Shamar
Stuart and I think of how disruptive he was at
times during camp and in the preseason, and I've thought
often about what it would be like to put Schamar
Stewart and pair him with Trey Hendrickson and see what
that looks like.
Speaker 2 (01:35:34):
So I we'll see.
Speaker 1 (01:35:38):
But I think this is a reasonable compromise, a fair outcome,
and what most of us want is going to happen,
which is he's going to play against Cleveland twenty seven
away from six o'clock. Tony Pike is going to join
us on this coming up in twelve minutes on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station se Chevrolet home of lifetime
powertrain protection and guaranteed credit approval. From there, fly the
(01:36:00):
Yours for Life, kelseyshev dot Com. Trey Hendrickson reportedly set
to sign a one year contract with the Bengals that
Ian Rappaport of NFL Network says will make him one
of the highest paid defensive players in the sport. Again
a one year deal for the twenty twenty five season.
This would ensure that Trey's on the field in thirteen
days when the Bengals take on the Browns in Cleveland,
(01:36:23):
a game that you'll hear live on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Bengals also made some roster moves. They have waived the
following eleven players McTelvin Agam, Nate Brooks, Cole Burgess, Quali Conley,
Shack Loyle, Rashade Owens, Andrew Raim, Lance Robinson, Andrew Stuber,
Peyton Thorn, and Craig Young. Cincinnati also releasing defensive tackle
Tavan Bryan. What else do we have? Reds and Dodgers
(01:36:46):
Tonight Hunter Green and Emmett Shean on the Hill ten
ten tonight On seven hundred WLW Gavin lux pregame ceremony
will get his World Series ring he won with the
Dodgers last year. Cincinnati is a game and a half
out of the last wild card and Mets and Phillies
tonight with New York up that game and a half
on Cincinnati and college football. The Mark Stoops Radio Show
(01:37:07):
is tonight at six o'clock on ESPN fifteen thirty. The
Trey Hendrickson thing. Austin and I were just talking about
this off air. It really works out for everybody. Trey
gets the rays he deserves. Bengals don't have to commit
to years. They weren't enthusiastic about guaranteeing they get their
best player on the field or best defensive player on
the field against the Browns. And because Trey can now
(01:37:28):
be a free agent and his future is uncertain, we
get another let's see August to March, we get like
another what seven months to talk about Trey Hendrickson.
Speaker 2 (01:37:39):
Are you kidding me? Sign me up?
Speaker 1 (01:37:43):
It's a win win for everybody. Tony Pike in just
a few minutes, Mike, I got a few minutes.
Speaker 2 (01:37:48):
What's up?
Speaker 11 (01:37:50):
Yeah, that's always the way it is. Go a few minutes, Okay,
thanks Pal. I just hope Jill Burrow didn't end up
like John Elway. I'm really worried about this offensive line
this year. I hope to help Joe doesn't get hurt.
I really really hope.
Speaker 7 (01:38:07):
So. Uh Trey Hendrickson, I don't know. Yeah, yeah, he's
a great defensive end. Made a lot of sacks, but
that's not going to solve the problem of the entire defense.
That may solve part of it, but not the If
people can continue to run the football against the Bengals
like they are now, I don't know that that will
make a whole lot of difference.
Speaker 1 (01:38:26):
It doesn't solve all their problems, but it doesn't create
a new one by not having him.
Speaker 2 (01:38:31):
Oh no, if you were those who are.
Speaker 1 (01:38:35):
Worried that Trey may actually choose to miss games, which
I didn't take that threat that seriously, Yeah I didn't.
Speaker 7 (01:38:45):
I mean quite frankly, I had to drink something horrible
if they give me hear tooss. Oh sorry about that. Now,
getting back to the Reds the problem. So tonight, I
thought I thought there was a chance that the Reds,
that the Dodgers could be a home dog tonight with
Green pitching against and she's born too at a four
(01:39:07):
point one seven. He's been hurt off and on all
year two. But it didn't happen. There's still the Dodgers
are still minus. I think.
Speaker 1 (01:39:18):
That's a team that's seven. It's a team that's seventeen
games above five hundred at home.
Speaker 7 (01:39:24):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:39:26):
I would have been stunned had the Reds been road favorites.
Speaker 7 (01:39:30):
It's also a team that's Max Mountsey, a thirty to
thirty five year home run a year guy. It's out again.
All their utility guys are hurt. Tommy Edmunds out, Kik
Hernandez is out. Hasan Kim who was supposed to be
the starting second basement from the beginning of the year,
he's still out. Ten pitchers are out. I mean the Reds,
(01:39:52):
if you don't get them now, then you ain't never
going to get them.
Speaker 2 (01:39:55):
They still have Freddy Freeman and Mookie Bets.
Speaker 3 (01:39:58):
Correct Freddy's hot right now, and they still got ti
Oscar Hernandez te Oscar Hernandez, who's a start. But I
found this out today though the Reds are fifty six
and nineteen. When they score four runs or more, that
tells you what their pitching is about.
Speaker 1 (01:40:17):
Yeah, I mean that, unfortunately, Mike, thank you was always
Unfortunately there's just way too many games where they don't
score close to four, and but yeah, look that the
starting pitching has been Andrew Abbott wasn't very good on Saturday.
The starting pitching has been terrific all year long. That's
why this team is going to stay in the hunt.
It's why I believe the collapse is not going to come.
The offensive deficiencies are such that it's fair to wonder
(01:40:39):
if they can get over the hump and catch the
Mets eighteen away from six o'clock. You know, the Trey
Hendrickson thing, most of us, maybe not all, but I
think most of us didn't take seriously the suggestion that
he wouldn't play or that he would miss games, because
was he going to miss the game?
Speaker 2 (01:40:58):
Checks?
Speaker 1 (01:40:59):
But if you thought that that was a possibility, like
keeping Trey Hendrickson does not fix their defensive issues, it
keeps then from opening up a new one. At the
very least, if you're Al Golden and you're now tasked with, heck,
just fixing the defense from what it's been in the preseason,
(01:41:19):
can you imagine how much more difficult that effort becomes
if you don't have Trey Hendrickson, you know, or had
they pulled off a trade and sent him somewhere, which
has been talked about a lot over the last week
or so, like, Al Golden has a massive undertaking in
front of him, massive undertaking in front of him to
(01:41:43):
fix last year's defense with a whole lot of dudes
who helped get last year's coach fired. Can you imagine
how much more difficult that task becomes if you don't
give him tree? Look, Trey's deficiencies are well spoken for.
He's not great against the run. He is a little
bit one dimensional, but that one one dimensional thing he's
(01:42:06):
really damn good at. Do you want to try to
repair a defense without it or with it?
Speaker 2 (01:42:10):
Today? It's that simple, right, if.
Speaker 1 (01:42:12):
You're Al Golden, do you do you want to fix
the defense with Trey or without? I cannot imagine there's
a world where anybody with half a brain would say
without Now he doesn't have to worry about that. Tony
Pike joins us next.
Speaker 4 (01:42:27):
He's the season review report. Look to you by Skyline
Hilly feeling good. It's Skyline domes on, your official home
of the Cincinnati Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:42:40):
Now Here are the particulars on Trey Hendrickson's one year contract.
He gets a fourteen million dollar raise, so he'll make
about thirty million dollars in twenty twenty five. Tony Pike
is with us for a season preview report. Tony, I
think this is a win for all sides. Trey gets
his rays, Bengals get their best defensive player on the
field in the first game. They don't have to commit
(01:43:03):
long term two years. They weren't nuts about committing long
term two and we can keep talking about Trey Hendrickson's
contract in his future beyond twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (01:43:11):
No one loses.
Speaker 5 (01:43:13):
There's including us in all of this. But look, the
main part of this that I think jumps out is
the fact that the Bengals don't have to commit outside
of this year. The drawback I felt like all along
was Trey Hendrickson's age and worried about the falloff. And
if you're Trey Hendrickson, you get the fourteen million dollar raise.
You also get a chance after this season to show
(01:43:35):
why you deserve another type of guaranteed contract. So if
you're Trey, go out there, ball out on the football field,
have another huge year from a SAX standpoint, and then
someone or the Bengals will be able to give you
more money.
Speaker 9 (01:43:49):
I think it does.
Speaker 5 (01:43:50):
It's it's an outcome I didn't know what exists because
of just the one year deal, but it does feel
like both sides can can really feast off this and
come out positive.
Speaker 2 (01:44:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:44:02):
I mean, maybe this didn't feel like the most likely outcome,
but it always to me felt like a plausible one.
If you thought that Trey deserves a raise, which the
Bengals have acknowledged, if you understood why they had reservations
about his productivity during a season next year when he's
going to turn thirty two years old, and if you
understood the value of Trey having that carrot being dangled
(01:44:23):
in front of him to hit free agency if he
has a big year this year, plus they can still
bring him back. It's not necessarily, you know, an inevitability
that will hit free agency and leave the team. The
t Higgins thing last year taught us that I love
this outcome quite frankly.
Speaker 5 (01:44:41):
Yeah, it's the best poplockcome I think there could have been,
and at the core of it with Trey Hendrickson again
as an opportunity to go prove it now, to show
why you deserve this. It checks every box in my opinion.
It checks Trey box that he said, you know, with
the Bengals said going into last year, if you were
to have another successful year, they would make it right financially,
(01:45:04):
The Bengals have done that. Trey's getting a massive guarantee
and the Bengals aren't tied up long term, which again
gives them the flexibility for the future. But it also
sends a message mo of we are in this win
now mentality and we fully embraced out and understand that
as an organization.
Speaker 1 (01:45:21):
Yeah, that's the key thing for me right. Al Golden
has a very tough task in front of him. We've
talked about the defense all training camp long, all throughout
the offseason. At the very least, Al Golden today knows
he's guaranteed to have Trey on the field dead first game,
which I'm sure for him represents a sigh relief.
Speaker 7 (01:45:40):
Yeah, it should be.
Speaker 5 (01:45:41):
If we go by what Al Goldon has said that
they've just been very base. They've kept saying basic. Now,
maybe with Trey Hendrickson back, maybe you can ramp things
up a little bit, Maybe you can get creative what
you can show or not show against Cleveland. I would
imagine with two weeks to ramp things up. Tray's not
going to be on any type of restrict because of
the way he keeps his body in shape. So yeah,
(01:46:03):
it is a much added assist here to Al Golden,
who has kind of been doing this with one hand
tied behind his back because of the personnel on this
defensive side of the ball. Now you have the NFL
stack leader onto any defense. It's going to be an
upgrade surely for this team that's lacking playmakers.
Speaker 1 (01:46:19):
Tony, awesome stuff. We'll talk again tomorrow man, thanks so much.
All right, Well, Tony Pike joins us every single hour
all throughout the preseason with season preview reports. I'm looking
here at spa track dot com. If you just look
at at edgerusher the cap hit for this year Trey Hendrickson,
the estimate will be a shade over thirty two and
(01:46:42):
a half million dollars. He'll have the second biggest cap
hit among edge rushers. The contract annual or average value
TJ Watts still at forty one, Miles Garrett forty, Danielle Hunter,
who we've talked about a lot, at thirty five and
a half, Max Crosby five and a half, nick bosad
to thirty four, so Trey Hendrickson a rung below, he
(01:47:05):
still gets very close to a one hundred percent pay raise.
I don't know, man, like you can, you can crush
on the Bengals for not signing him long term.
Speaker 2 (01:47:16):
The good news is, like time will tell.
Speaker 1 (01:47:19):
By the way, the franchise tag is also still in play,
Trey Hendrickson gets an opportunity to make more money, be
considered among the highest paid players at his position, and
has a chance to prove the Bengals wrong down the road.
Like the thing that is most exciting for me and
(01:47:40):
the thing that I think should matter most is the
thing that I bet matters most to Zach Taylor and
Al Golden. Trey Hendrickson is going to be a part
of the team this year. Maybe that was never really
in doubt, but you know, it was unsettled, and more
than any thing. They can spend the next two weeks
(01:48:04):
preparing for the season, trying to fix a whole bunch
of other stuff and at least not have that uncertainty
looming in the background. Is Trey gonna leave? Is he
gonna you know, take off? Is he gonna be a
part of practice next week, is he gonna play in
the game? I mean like, and by the way, Trey
(01:48:24):
hasn't practiced right, so you know now he could practice.
This isn't like I think a lot of us felt like.
If it does get done in whatever way, shape or
form it takes, if it does get done, it's gonna
get done next week. And then it's like pitch count
Trey not sure if he's gonna be able to be
on the field all that much against Cleveland, that sort
of thing. Guy gets basically two weeks to ramp himself up.
(01:48:47):
So I don't know, man, I I might be in
the minority here. I am more than okay with this outcome.
And I bet you the Bengals are as well. Hendrickson
if he's not play angry, we'll see. We're done. Show's
over tomorrow. We're broadcasting from Oakley Greens. Paul Danner Junior
(01:49:09):

of the show, and we look forward to that. Anything
