Speaker 1 (00:00):
Incredible. What is this? It's like an alternate reality. What's up?

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Moegor ESPN fifteen thirty. Thanks for listening today. Hopefully you're
having just an unbelievably awesome Wednesday afternoon. We know we are.
Show preview is available right now on Twitter at moegar
go watch it. It comes your way thanks to share
Facts Credit Union. You know what you should do. You

(00:27):
should do a lot of things, but you should become
a member of share Facts Credit Union just like me.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Membership has its.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Privileges, as we say, learn more and find out how
to become a member at sharefacs dot org. Rick Boring
is going to be on this show at three forty five.
We are looking forward to that. We'll hear from Joe Flacca.
I'm not gonna carry Joe Flacco live, but I will
have his comments for you in the five o'clock hour

(00:54):
if you don't mind waiting, and if he says anything pressing,
we'll certainly share it with you. He is not throwing
at Bengals practice today, which is I guess not that abnormal.
He is dealing with the ac joint sprain, and so
the plan if all goes well, I guess is going
to be for him to throw tomorrow and be set

(01:15):
to play against Pittsburgh on Sunday. By the way, Bengals
game plan is tonight from six to eight on ESPN
fifteen thirty. We have that to look forward to. We
got a lot of Bengals stuff. Richard Skinner's going to
be with us on the five o'clock hour. Some Red
stuff as well, because at the general managers meetings in
Las Vegas, which sounds like a good time. By the way,

(01:35):
Nick Crawl says about Hunter Green trade rumors quote not
on the table, which is good.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
They shouldn't be. We'll get to that a little bit
later on. I am.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
A huge college basketball fan, and one thing that I
love about college basketball that is in play in the
other sports, although I think not nearly to the same degree,
is watching teams get better from what they were in
November to what they're going to become in February. You know,

(02:12):
I learned this for years of watching mc cronin's teams
here at You see that it's kind of silly to
make you know conclusions about what a team is going
to be when you've watched to play two, three, four
games in November and it's fun if you follow a
college basketball team over the course of a season. I
think in particular in this day and age, which I
love this era of college sports. But you know, coaches

(02:35):
are doing what John Caliperry had to do for years
at Kentucky, which is coach a new team every single year,
and it does take some time, and not every team
gets better, not every team gets better at the rate
that its fans would like. But it's the fun part
about college basketball to me, and I think you could
apply it more in that sport than a lot of
the others. Is that what a team is early in

(02:56):
the season is often what it's not as we get
to the part of the season that matters the most.
So if you're like me and a big UC basketball fan,
when your head hit the pillow last night, I'm guessing
you were praying, begging at least for the Bearcats in
January to not be what they were yesterday evening. And

(03:18):
by the way, multiple things can be true. You could
be excited about the fact that your team won. I was,
and I say that as somebody who went to college
at the University of Dayton. That is not an insignificant victory.
It's a victory that could look pretty good. By the
end of the season, we will see you can do

(03:39):
more than one thing at a time. At least most
of us can be excited about the fact that they
won the basketball game, but also wonder when is their
most glaring issue going to be rectified. The most glaring
issue last night were the twenty four turnovers. Our producer
today is Drew Westerhidi Drew Bey as we call him,

(04:02):
and he is the resident UD basketball correspondent for the
Moegger Show and for the radio station as a whole,
and we talked about how Dayton's gonna put pressure on
the ball. Dayton wants to press. That's the kind of
defense ninety four feet they want to play. Dayton's press
last night was not bothersome at all.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Cincinnati had twenty four turnovers. There was a.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Stretch last night where I actually went back and looked
to see what Cincinnati's school record was for turnovers in
a game, thinking it might be threatened. And it wasn't
seriously threatened, but for a short while I thought it
might be. The number is thirty one. The Bearcats ended
the game with twenty four last night. I think like

(04:46):
twenty two or twenty three of them were totally unforced.
Twenty two or twenty three of them felt like they
were the results of bad decisions, oftentimes bad passes. Instead
of throwing the ball to the closest guy, some somebody
with the ball would throw it to somebody cross court
or down court, or somebody who was guarded.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Twenty four turnovers.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Add to that the fourteen miss free throws Cincinnati today
and it's November the twelfth, and so it's not worth
losing your mind over. At face value, the Bearcats are
three hundred and twenty seventh in turnover percentage. For what
it's worth, they are two hundred and eighty third in

(05:29):
the country and free throw shooting percentage a year after
they finished fourteenth in the Big Twelve last year thirteenth
two years prior. Longtime listeners of this show know that
I have a dream. Many say it's well, it's got
to be to watch the Bearcats in the final Foremo,
that would be nice. So the Bearcats in the national
championship game, that would be nice. I just want to see,

(05:49):
for the third time this century you see basketball have
a team that's in the top one hundred in the
country in free throw shooting percentage. Doesn't feel like that's
going to be the case this year. And so I
think with more people watching last night than watched either
of the first two games, there were a couple of
impressions you could take away. Number One, Bearcats do have

(06:11):
some good and talented players. Number Two, team looks like
it might defend at a pretty decent level for the
most part.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Last night. They did that.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
They showed some promise shooting the ball from outside, which
had not been the case in the first two games.
But if they're gonna be that fast and loose with
the basketball in the Big twelve or when they play
the Louisville Cardinals a week from Friday, that's gonna be problematic.
And so the thing I'm looking forward to most for

(06:39):
a team that's got some guys that ordinarily you would say.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Should be pretty trustworthy with.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
The basketball in their hands, twenty four turnovers, turnovers on
roughly a third of their offensive possessions last night. How
does that get rectified? How quickly does that get rectified?
How many games does it cost them before it gets rectified?
Does it get rectified at all? Very fair questions, and

(07:07):
so unfortunately I think if you're a UC fan, that's
kind of the big takeaway from last night. If they
turn it over as many times as they did against
Dayton against Louisville, then next Friday Night is going to
be a long evening for West Miller's team. And then
there's the Wes Miller component as well, because you know,
let's be honest, as much as we're all very, very

(07:29):
hopeful that the Bearcats could have this sort of season
this year that gets people to stop talking about the
job status of the head coach, he hasn't yet built
up enough equity to make anybody think that issues early
in the season are going to be rectified to the
degree that we would like. And I think even Wes
would acknowledge that's a fair statement until he makes it

(07:53):
not a fair statement that hasn't happened yet. I thought
for UD last night, it was simply a matter of
two for ten twenty six from behind the arc. I
thought for the first thirty minutes of the game, Dayton's
looks were pretty challenged. I thought they had some really
good open looks later in the game. I thought the

(08:13):
Bearcats did defend pretty well last night. I thought they
closed out on shooters thought they looked like a pretty
well coached, good communication defensive team, but again, the turnovers
last night were nearly a killer. They did have a
stretch from about the nine to thirty mark to just
under four minutes where they did not turn it over

(08:35):
at all, and during that stretch Cincinnati outscored UD seventeen
to five.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
If this team.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Takes care of the basketball, they've got some good offensive options.
If this team takes care of the basketball, they could
play at a couple of different speeds. If this team
takes good care of the basketball, they should be able
to create open looks, either in transition or even in
the half court. Six minute stretch, no turnovers, they outscore
Dayton by twelve, they win the game by ten. And

(09:05):
it's one thing when the other team is putting a
lot of pressure on the ball.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
The Flyers were not doing that last night.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
UH five point three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty is
our phone number on Twitter at Moeger. Thanks to Delta Dental,
Delta Dental is building healthy, smart, vibrant communities for all.
Good to Delta dentaloh dot com. Kentucky loses to Louisville
last night, just a pretty high end college basketball game
between two really good teams, teams that have a chance

(09:33):
to win their respective league titles, teams that should have
high seeds in the NCAA Tournament. I thought, from a
Kentucky perspective, it was the two long laws offensively that
enabled them to or enable Louisville to build an eighteen
point lead, which Kentucky cut down to I think five,
and then a twenty point lead, which Kentucky cut down
to I guess four, uh, and then with free throws.

(09:56):
I think if my memory serves me correct, and I
was kind of of paying attention to coming in and
out while handling UC duties last night. I don't know
if there's any grand takeaway other than if you look
at that game from the lens of Louisville coming here
a week from Friday, Bear Katz are gonna have their
hands full with that Cardinals offense, namely Michel Brown Mora

(10:19):
on that coming up here in just a bit five
three seven, fifteen thirty. I am told that we think
the phones are working today.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Perhaps we'll see, don't know.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
We got to get to Nick Krawl's comments on uh
on Hunter Green and we'll do that coming up in
the four o'clock hour, Rick browing a little bit later
on this hour Bengals Shamar Stewart doubtful again. Same for
Trey hendrickson Joe Flacco not throwing today, Bengals and Steelers
on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
I tried to be twenty four hours ago the.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
First to say that I think the Bengals are gonna
win on Sunday. The more time goes, the less I
really believe that. But we do have to talk about
Joe Flacco, so we will when we come back on
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
There's a market difference.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
In the music that we hear between when Tarren Bland
is producing. Tarran is on vacation. Tarran went to Disney World.
Do we know where Tarn went?

Speaker 1 (11:29):
Lieve he has a wedding in Orlando.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
He's got a wedding in Orlando. I know he was
going to Orlando. I didn't know if Taren was gonna
go see the mouse. Well, there's a market difference in
the music that we hear between when Tarren runs the
show and when Drew West or Heidi runs the show.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
By the way, uh, which is think of the game
last night, Drew, I thought it was ugly. Yeah, it's
a good encapsulation of it.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
Yeah, that didn't build a lot of confidence going forward
for my dating Flyers. I understand they're not going to
shoot that badly when they started playing in the A ten.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
Let's hope not right. A little bit of an outlier
last night.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
Yeah, but thought they did some good, amazing to stay
in the game because that easily could have been a
twenty five to thirty point play.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Now the other team just chucks the ball all over
the joint and you got a shot.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
We'll see, we'll see.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
If you missed yesterday's show, all of it's available in
its entirety on the iHeartRadio app or or you could
listen to our conversation separately. We had Pat Noon and
on with us yesterday, the head coach of FC Cincinnati,
our guy Rick Walls from the Reds Hall of Fame.
We talked about the Modern Player ballot for the class
of twenty twenty six. What else or our guy Sean

(12:37):
Saya joined us as well, Stats and Scheme newsletter. We
dove into some schemes Bengals and Steelers specifically, and Paul
Danner Junior as well on a whole slew of Bengals
related issues. If you missed any of those conversations, or
if you listen to them but you love them so
much you want to listen to them again, go listen

(12:58):
to them on the Iheartrate, or if you don't like apps,
just go to ESPN fifteen thirty dot com podcast of
this show or a service of Long Neck's Sports Grill.
Joe Flacco is not gonna throw at Bengals practice today,
or it isn't throwing at Bengals practice today. The plan

(13:21):
is for him to practice tomorrow. And the sense of
optimism for Joe Burrow coming back muted, and understandably so,
for a couple of different reasons.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
One, the team is three and six.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
Two it's fair to wonder like if Joe comes back
and the team is not in it doesn't make sense
to put him out there. We had some good discussions
about that yesterday. Now, on the other end of it,
Joe Burrow is gonna say, and you expect this from him,
and I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
We've got a shot we can win this division.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
And the Pittsburgh Stealers do not look like a team
that's capable of running away with it.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
The game they played here where.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
They lost was the one where they it felt like,
had a shot to go. Okay, fine, we can pull
away from the pack. They've not been able to. Baltimore
is now the odds on favorite to win the AFC North.
Joe Burrow coming back is a good thing. Joe Burrow
is better than Joe Flacco. It is completely fair to

(14:19):
wonder when is Joe Flacco going to turn into a pumpkin?
What I say turned into a pumpkin, not turn into
a bad quarterback, but turn into a forty year old
backup whose best years are still probably behind him, by
the way, That in itself is not unreasonable to wonder,
especially when you add to it the fact that he

(14:41):
still has a bump shoulder.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
They could shoot it up with whatever on game day
and give him.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
Drugs that were probably not allowed to know about, and
he can gut through every week, but at some point
that's gonna catch up to him. Which means the only way,
and this is an obvious statement, but the only way
they get to the postseason, regardless of when Joe Burrow
comes back or how Joe Flacco plays, The only way

(15:11):
is if the defense helps them get there. It is
the single biggest question right now about the twenty twenty
five Bengals. Not so much when Joe Burrow comes back,
not even what the offense is going to look like
when he does come back. But if you are clinging
to the idea that this team still has at least
a puncher's chance, how if there's not somewhere somewhere among

(15:39):
that defensive group some improvement that enables them to get
stops in the second half of games, that enables them
to get stops that can close games, that enables them
to get stops to at least give the offensive ball
with a chance to win the game. The frustrating thing
to me is, on November the twelfth, I'm asking same

(16:00):
question I was asking back on August the twelfth. One
of the other frustrating things is, and god knows, we've
kind of beaten this to death, but with this defense,
there's no real nuance to it.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
It's not like it's a small tweak away.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
It's not like it's one area, one underperforming area getting
better away from being a really good unit. They're bad
in every conceivable way. Stopping the run, getting after the quarterback, tackling, coverage,
man zone, like you name it. They're bad at it.

(16:38):
What gets good about this defense in time for the
season to be saved, because if it's well, Burrow's gonna
come back and offensively they're gonna be.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
Even better than they already have been.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
Well, then we're talking about last year's team with the
idea was to just have Joe Burrow carry the team
to forty nine to forty five victories.

Speaker 1 (17:01):
That can work once, it can work twice.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
It ain't gonna work six or seven times, certainly not
within a eight game scratch. So there's the question. Joe
Flacco is not gonna be able to answer that. Joe
Burrow is not going to be able to answer that.
If you think that, you know it's not over all.
Hope is not lost. A lot of these teams are beatable. Okay, defensively,

(17:31):
what changes after the bye? Players aren't gonna be swapped out.
They didn't really go get anybody at the trade deadline.
Trey Hendrickson being Hurt's not gonna help. Where does the
improvement come from? I do not have an answer. Perhaps
you do five one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen, thirty
UH Sports headlines and I look ahead at next Friday

(17:52):
night coming up next on ESPN fifteen thirty twenty four
from four o'clock. This is ESPN fifteen thirty Sports headline
in just a few minutes. But I don't want to
make our guest wait. So you see wins last night,
Louisville wins last night. Those two programs are going to
play in Cincinnati for the first time in a while,

(18:13):
the Cardinals coming to the Heritage Bank Center to take
on the Bearcats a week from Friday.

Speaker 1 (18:18):
Tip Off is going to be at six point thirty.

Speaker 2 (18:20):
This is obviously going to be the third consecutive year
that you see basketball plays at the Arena downtown. This
is an event put on by BDG Sports, and our
friend Brooks Downing from BDG Sports is with us to
talk about the game and the event itself. Brooks, it's
awesome to have you.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
How are you No, I'm doing great.

Speaker 4 (18:38):
How are you doing?

Speaker 1 (18:39):
I'm doing well.

Speaker 2 (18:39):
Hopefully some momentum for this game because of the respective
results by the Bearcats and Cardinals last night.

Speaker 3 (18:46):
I don't think there's any doubt. You know, it is
an early game. Obviously, November games are just when people
are starting to turn their attention. Of course, both football
programs at the respective schools have been having very good seasons,
so a lot of folks are just in that transition
period which you and I call the best time of
the year with you know, football and basketball both playing

(19:08):
coming off the World Series. If our Reds could ever
do anything, that would be awesome. But nonetheless, I tell
you those wins last night and the performances Michael Brown
junior for Louisville was unbelievable, twenty points in the first half,
finished with twenty nine, just dominated the game against the Wildcats.
And then of course, you know everybody's looking forward to

(19:29):
to Sean Baya as he gets in the fold two there,
and you see and all that he's gonna bring those
two five stars. I mean, these are two you know,
superstars in the NBA on the rise. Guys here in
the in the very near future, we're gonna be able
to see them live and in person next week going
against each other.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
It's gonna be awesome.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
And you know, I'm older and off I've watched Cincinnati
and Louisville play as members of the Metro, as members
of Conference USA, as members of the Big East Tech
for one year with Louisville as a member of the
American Athletic Conferences. These these should play. It's awesome that
you were able to put this game together. How did
it come about?

Speaker 3 (20:05):
It's really to your point, it's one of the oldest
rivalries in the sport if you're thinking about it, and
how many times they've played each other. And it's pretty
funny how these different leagues they've been in that they've
kind of you joined forces all these years, and now
they find themselves in two Power four leagues, in the
Big Twelve and ACC respectively.

Speaker 5 (20:23):
But you know, these.

Speaker 3 (20:24):
Teams these days, there's so many different pressures, obviously with
the transition of NIL and all the transfers and everything
else that's happening, and so teams are looking for quality games.
And I don't think there's any question that the Big
twelve and the ACC are looking to really enhance their
non conference schedules so that they can keep up with

(20:46):
the competition level and the Big Ten and the SEC.
So with that said, they're looking for marquee opponents in
a regional environment, which I'd love as an operator to
be able to put a pair of teams like this
together that have played each other there a number of
times in the past, have great history together, are two
very successful programs and that are basically an hour apart

(21:08):
down the river. To bring them together for a two
year deal because the next year is going back to
Louisville and going to be played at Freedom Hall, the
old arena there where the Cards used to play and
Cincinnati's played on numerous occasions, So that'll be fun to
get a game back in there. But to be able
to do this in these two environments and really share
the crowd, it's going to give that postseason atmosphere. It's

(21:31):
really going to generate a ton of interest. And I
tell you what, it's going to be a heck of
a game.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
You've also added to it the fact that Pat Kelsey's
from here.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
Absolutely, your boy Joe Frederick tells me there's going to
be five thousand Kelsey family members in the arena some
next Friday night. Like the dude has significant roots there
and all he's ever done is one as a coach.
The guys eat up with it. He doesn't accept, you.

Speaker 1 (22:00):
Know, job with it.

Speaker 3 (22:01):
You saw it last night. His game plan, his recruiting,
all of it's coming together at Louisville as he rebuilds
that program, and now you got Wes. Wes West has
been fighting and grinding to get the Bearcats program back.
I think they're very similar because if you look at
Wes's roots from North Carolina and all the history that
he knows of this game, he knows that program, and

(22:22):
now he's got starting to get the talent in to
buy into his system. I think we're going to have
a two, you know, top twenty five matchup.

Speaker 4 (22:30):
Louisville's going to be top ten.

Speaker 3 (22:32):
Both will come in undefeated. I mean, what's not to like?

Speaker 1 (22:35):
No, you can't beat it.

Speaker 2 (22:36):
It's a Friday night, it's a little bit of an
early tip off six point thirty, and so you know,
you could go to the game and then still have
hours in front of you on a Friday evening.

Speaker 1 (22:47):
I know.

Speaker 2 (22:47):
Obviously Cincinnati has played dating each of the last couple
of years.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Those events have gone pretty well, correct.

Speaker 3 (22:53):
They sure have. I mean we've basically sold it out
last year, was near a sellout the year before, and
of course you saw the two teams last night. They
went back to it home and home as we pulled
Louisville into this this year, all.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
Right tickets for a week from Friday. It's the twenty
first at six thirty. How do folks go about getting them?

Speaker 3 (23:12):
The easiest way to do it is ticketmaster dot com.
What's great about it, there's still plenty of really good
seats left because the tension, and we're used to this.
November sales are always a little slow, but it will
sell out and it's going. It jumped a ton today,
as you can imagine with both teams winning last night.
I think the excitements there. Ticketmaster dot com, get your

(23:34):
great seats and we'll see at the Heritage Bank Center.

Speaker 2 (23:36):
It should be a lot of fun. I love the
fact that Cincinnati and Louisville are playing. Hopefully it's something
that continues, as does this event. Brooks, We thank you
for the time, man, thanks so much. Appreciate it MO
anytime that's our guy Brooks Downing BDG Sports. You see
Louisville next Friday tip off at six thirty. It is

Speaker 1 (26:05):
So, I saw you had lunch of chilies today? Yeah,
how was that?

Speaker 6 (26:16):
Combining my favorite part of the Mexican food visit, which
is the free chips and soda with burgers. So it's solid.

Speaker 2 (26:25):
I went to Chili's in Florence, uh, maybe a month
and a half ago, and I got a burger and
the server told me that I have pretty blue eyes.
So as far as I'm concerned, chilies can do no wrong.
Now I will talk about your fashion Faull pod Chili's
coming up here in just a bit, but let's begin
with Xavier. A very pleasant topic right now is the

(26:46):
Musketeers were smoked by Santa Clara. I think a lot
of us expected the Musketeers this season to not be
very good. I didn't expect that. I say this not
from the standpoint of a guy looked through a lens
of a fan of another team. I don't know that
I've seen a major, a high major team perform as

(27:07):
poorly in a quote by game as whole at home
as I saw Xavier did on Monday.

Speaker 1 (27:13):
What was that?

Speaker 6 (27:16):
I think there are so many questions that come from
that game, even for someone like me. I mean, you
were shocked when I said in your studio that I
thought they were going to lose twenty games this year,
so I was pretty well aware of the reality that
was to come for this team. I would probably lower
my prediction now I had them around eleven wins, I'd
probably dropped that to like seven ish wins. Now at

(27:38):
this point, with the way things are going so far.
But I mean, you have your leading score coming into
that game, Elite Mesina Moore not even attempt a shot,
just so many different things where you get outscored in
the paint the way that they did in that game.
I mean, anything that you point to was pretty much
a really bad look for this team. And here's the

(28:00):
problem though, Yes it was a bad effort. Yes they
probably weren't playing hard enough or tough enough for any
of those things.

Speaker 5 (28:07):
But at the end of the.

Speaker 6 (28:08):
Day, it didn't look like it was just something where
oh they didn't show up tonight, and if you played
that game ten more times, they'd win seven of them.
They were completely outclassed in every way. And in fact,
I think if they played that game ten more times,
Santa Clara would at least win eight of the ten.

Speaker 1 (28:25):
It's not all ten.

Speaker 6 (28:26):
I mean they just looked like clearly the better team.

Speaker 2 (28:29):
I think there were obviously worlds where Santa Clara won
the game. I mean, I get that Herb Scendek has
been around for a long time. Whatever is Xavier is
not expected to be very good. There's a difference between
losing the game and putting that on the floor. So
you know, in this day and age, people go, well,
that's that's the best, that's the best, that the best
roster you could buy. Is that the best roster they

(28:51):
could buy?

Speaker 6 (28:53):
Yeah, I think two things can be true here. One
is that Richard Patino and his staff were an impossible
situation when they came in this spring, like into the portal.
We talked about that last week on the show, where
it's like, hey, all these big football schools with the
new rules that kicked in on July first, they were
emptying their collectives, paying a bunch of money up front,

(29:14):
and then also after July first, the school has been
going the kick in and start paying the players as well,
so you're kind of double dipping. We saw, you know,
we're here in Kentucky spent upwards of twenty plus million.
Louisville did something similar, and you know, even Cincinnati spent
well over ten million from according to reports. So you know,
Xavier was somewhere in the neighborhood of five and a

(29:34):
half six million, depending on what you believe. And they
not only were at that level, but they had replaced
their entire roster and it's common to replace you know,
sixty seventy percent of your roster nowadays, but replacing every
single minute on your roster is a really difficult task.
So that's that's an impossible situation to walk into, especially

(29:55):
the in last year's situation in the transfer portal. I
don't think they were likely to have a very good
team this year, regardless of how they did. I think
it's also fair to look at that and say, but
you know, Santa Clara Lemoyne Marist, these teams all probably
aren't spending more than five and a half six million,
and yes, they don't have to replace an entire roster.

(30:15):
But I think that's the concern that people are seeing
is like, Okay, we're hoping that you spent that money
with the idea of some of these guys are going
to be worthwhile players that you can maybe retain and
build something around, and so far, they look like they're
not good enough to beat mid major teams. And yes,
I know there are a lot of moving parts. Yes
I know they can improve as the season goes on,

(30:37):
but it's hard to imagine what these guys are going
to look like when they faced biggest competition here in
a few weeks.

Speaker 2 (30:43):
NK, you played a really good SEC team on Saturday
and got smoked.

Speaker 6 (30:48):
What happened, you know, shockingly, I think I was kind
of encouraged from an NKU perspective. The big issue they
faced against Tennessee was that Tennessee had six guys in
their main rotation six eight or bigger, and a couple
of those guys are like in the six to eleven range.
They dominated points in the pay outscored at NKU by
like thirty.

Speaker 4 (31:08):
There.

Speaker 6 (31:09):
They were rebounding constantly on the offensive end, and I
think that's a legitimate concern for this year for MKU.
They're not a very big team.

Speaker 1 (31:17):
When LJ.

Speaker 6 (31:18):
Wells is off the floor, I'm concerned about how they'll
rebound on the defensive end. But they don't face teams
with those types of front courts in the Horizon League,
and they got off to a good start physically on
the perimeter. They didn't look overmatched. I thought Donovan O'Day
and Cal Robinson, the two guys that we talked about
after the opener against Juice Claremont, who has scored very well,

(31:38):
they still looked the part. They were scoring early and
often in this game for MKU looked like go two
pieces on the offensive end I think overall this team
has more offensively. The key will be how quickly can
they put it together defensively and can they rebound enough
to beat the better teams on their schedule.

Speaker 2 (31:56):
Tonight NKU was taking on East Tennessee State. Tony Bobbitt
hit a three point shot against East Tennessee State with
about fifteen seconds to go to beat that team in
Columbus in the NCAA Tournament in two thousand and four.
Should we expect a game that tonight is equally as dramatic.

Speaker 6 (32:14):
I hope so I'd love to call something like that.
I think, you know, East Tennessee State's been been pretty
good in recent year. Steve Forbes had them going and
now Brook Savage had a pretty good season with them
last year, and they expect to be decent again this season.
They weren't right round one fifty in ken Pom right now,
NK You's sitting around two eighty six. So if NKU

(32:34):
could could pull off a dramatic win like that on
the road, that'd be something I.

Speaker 1 (32:38):
Noticed on Instagram.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
He took a picture of your feet at the Chili's
restaurant you there in Tennessee wearing two different shoes, A
different shoe on your left foot than your right?

Speaker 1 (32:48):
Number one?

Speaker 2 (32:49):
Is this how you've been walking around Tennessee all day?
And will that be the attire tonight?

Speaker 4 (32:54):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (32:54):
So correction, that was back at the hotel. This issue
was I went to shoot around, went to Chile, came
all the way back to the hotel, and then as
I was like, you know, settling into the hotel again
and taking off my shoes, I said, what happened here?
I have two different shoes on, And it's startling to
know I'm at that age mill where something like that
can happen. But I did do that all day long.
I didn't intend to do it, and no one called

(33:16):
me out on it, which is a little unsettling too,
because it's like for people just being really nice, hopefully
they just don't even care what I'm doing. They're not
noticing me. But like what if they were just sitting
there noticing it and being like, yeah, that's.

Speaker 5 (33:29):
That guy's a mess, that's how he is.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
I think what you have learned is an important lesson
about people's self absorption.

Speaker 1 (33:37):
Absorption.

Speaker 2 (33:38):
Years ago, I went out and for circumstances, for reasons
that are wholly unimportant, I only shaved half my face,
and as I was out, I realize I've only shaved
half my face. And I was self conscious about this
all night long, and then about midway through the evening,
I thought, you know, people are wrapped up in their

(33:59):
own tough that me having half my face shaved is
going to escape everybody's notice because they don't care. And
I think something similar happened with you.

Speaker 6 (34:09):
Yeah, I think that's right. I don't think anyone really
cares what's on my feet, so I think that's probably
exactly what happened. Then that's good, But overall, I'm a
little concerned about my own mental state that I can
walk out of a hotel room with two different shops there.

Speaker 1 (34:23):
Let me tell you something.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
If the biggest issue reflective of your mental state is
the fact that you have two different shoes on, you're
in really really good.

Speaker 6 (34:30):
Shape, Well there are probably plenty of other concerning signs,
then I guess, but that's one of them.

Speaker 1 (34:36):
In my opinion, I understand. Rick. Thank you very much,
Thanks Moll.

Speaker 2 (34:40):
You'll hear Rick tonight on Fox Sports thirteen sixty NK
You and East Tennessee State. He will be on the
call with Jim Kelch yes twenty one years ago in Columbus,
Tony Bobbitt like fifteen fourteen to fifteen seconds, Togo hits
A three Bearcats trailed most of the day, beat East
Tennessee State, and then two days later got absolutely annihilated
by Illinois.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
So there you go.

Speaker 2 (35:01):
Twenty one years ago. Feels like Jess yesterday in Columbus.
Hunter Green's not going to be traded. That's not me
saying and it's basically Nick Krawl saying it. We'll talk
about it next on ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 1 (35:13):
Hey, what if you could chase for the cup? Baby?

Speaker 2 (35:15):
Pat pat Cronin, Pat Pat He was on the show,
Hell's Pat Cronan. Pat Noonan was on the show yesterday
the coach of FC Cincinnati.

Speaker 1 (35:24):
And that's a fun dude to talk to.

Speaker 7 (35:28):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
And if you missed that conversation, you can go listen
to it right now on the iHeartRadio app. We are
guest free UH for about thirty minutes. Amy Wanger's going
to join us from Dean Dorton to talk about sports
and money and betting and so much more. And we
can't wait. We love having Amy on the show. Five
point three seven, nine, fifteen, thirty will get you in.

(35:50):
So the the Major League Baseball GM meetings have been
happening in Las Vegas, and Nick Krawl is there. Nick
Krawl has been asked about the possibility of trading Hunter Green.
I'm reading here from Gordon Wittenbeyer of Cincinnati dot Com,
and Nick Krawl shoots down the idea that the Reds

(36:11):
have or are shopping Hunter Green says quote not on
the table, says he doesn't want to rule anything out,
but he says he has a difficult time envisioning trading
the staff. Ace also goes on to talk about the
need for starting pitching death. Nick Krawl is right, they

(36:33):
need more starting pitching death. By the way, they traded
for a starting pitcher during the season last year, that's
how much they needed starting pitching depth.

Speaker 1 (36:44):
Injuries pop up.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
I don't think the Reds have a starting pitcher or
a young starting pitcher who doesn't have at least some
injury on their resume, and in Hunter Green's case, an
injury every single year. But Hunter Green is a cause
controlled staff ace who yes, I know, pitched very poorly
in the postseason, but is still one of the best

(37:07):
pitchers in baseball, and by the way, hence some great
starts down the stretch that if they don't win those games,
the Reds don't make the postseason. There is no better
commodity in this sport then cost controlled staff ace.

Speaker 1 (37:25):
That's exactly what Hunter Green is.

Speaker 2 (37:28):
So you do not shop him without trying to get
back a boatload in return. Or you build your team
around him and you acquire what you need, and the
Reds need a lot, you acquire what you need.

Speaker 1 (37:43):
I don't know using free agency.

Speaker 2 (37:47):
So the Kyle Schwarber thing continues to come up, and yes,
it is exceptionally unrealistic, and I hate that it is.
It's one of the few things I like I hate
about the Reds that we don't even really turn the
hot stove fully on because we don't even entertain the

(38:09):
possibility that they'll go and get the biggest names and
the biggest stars out there. Sometimes the biggest names aren't
the best solutions, but we just we discount possibilities before
they're ever really possible. You may blame the Reds for that,
You may blame Baseball's economics for that. Some will blame
the media for that because I've seen that. But I

(38:32):
hate it. I said this last year. The Pete Alonzo
thing should have been a thing, but we all knew
it wasn't. And that kind of stinks with the Kyle
Schwarber thing in particular. And I guess when it comes
to other high end stars. Number one, if it's mo,
Kyle Schwarber is not going to be the guy they

(38:53):
get fine. Like fine, we all acknowledge they need pop.
We all acknowledge they need somebody who can hit the
long ball, provide some protection to some of the other
hitters they have. If it doesn't come in the form
of one of the top of the market guys, where
is where are those things going to come from?

Speaker 3 (39:15):
Now?

Speaker 2 (39:16):
Some will say, well, they could trade for a slugger,
and again like would you rather trade good starting pitcher
or just spend a little bit more money. You'll also
hear this, well, they can't afford it. Now, this might
just be a semantics thing, but there is a difference
between not being able to afford something and not being

(39:39):
willing to pay for something. There's lots of things I
cannot afford. I could spend the remaining hour and forty
nine minutes naming them for you. Lots of things I
cannot afford. Then there are some things that I can afford,
but I just I'm not willing to pay the price

(40:01):
to get I'm told I badly need a new iPhone.
The iPhone I have works fine, but like I I
got the I got a I got a twelve Mini, which,
by the way, I'm fine with.

Speaker 1 (40:18):
I don't care.

Speaker 2 (40:20):
I could text, I could tweet, I could listen to
the iHeartRadio app. It takes a picture. I'm good.

Speaker 1 (40:26):
But like everybody in my life.

Speaker 2 (40:28):
Is bro, you need a new phone. It's okay, It's
about time. So I look up the latest iPhone, the
iPhone seventeen, I guess. And I'm as not into the
up to the minute iPhones as anybody you'll ever talk to.
And so if I sound out of touch, it's because
I am, because this world is just not that important

(40:48):
to me. But I looked it up this weekend. All right,
what would the latest iPhone cost? There are obviously less
current models that I could buy for a lot less.
I saw it for like eleven hundred bucks. Could I
afford eleven hundred bucks?

Speaker 1 (41:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (41:06):
Yeah, I could afford eleven hundred bucks. Am I willing
to pay eleven hundred bucks for a phone. Absolutely not
personal preference. Would rather throw my money elsewhere. The Reds
could afford Kyle Schwarber, Like there is money there. There's
a difference though, between well, they can't afford him, which

(41:27):
you hear from a lot of people who love to
root for the spreadsheet, I guess, and that's just not
something they're willing to pay for. There are some good
arguments that can be made in favor of and against
signing a guy like Kyle Schwarber. He is thirty two,
decent chance his best years are behind him, but I

(41:48):
would say he's still a pretty good bet to hit
the ball out of the ballpark thirty five to forty times.
And if that means I have to pay for an
extra year down the road in order to get him now,
I'm willing to do it. There's a difference between we
don't have the money and we would rather not pay.
There's a difference between we just don't have the cash

(42:08):
and we would like to spend our cash on other things.
This is an example of it, and I've heard it already.
When they can't afford him, sure they can. First of all,
they've set a budget, Kyle Schwarber may or may not
be within their budget.

Speaker 1 (42:23):
Chances are he is not. If they really wanted to expand.

Speaker 2 (42:28):
Their budget, they could, like by reaching out to the
other owners of the team who they never borrow money from.

Speaker 1 (42:39):
Like there are ways to do it again.

Speaker 2 (42:42):
Man, you may just argue, regardless of what your budget is,
regardless of what your playing payroll for the upcoming season is,
regardless of what your team's revenues are, regardless of your
market size, he just doesn't represent a great investment. You
will find mark general managers. You will find rich owners

(43:04):
who will look at Kyle Schwerber and go.

Speaker 1 (43:06):
Maybe a couple of years ago, but not right now.

Speaker 2 (43:08):
I think that's a little absurd, given the fact that
the dude's a walking home run.

Speaker 1 (43:12):
But okay, but.

Speaker 2 (43:15):
Please, maybe just only for my sanity, let's not frame
it as they cannot afford him.

Speaker 1 (43:24):
They could.

Speaker 2 (43:27):
I will be convinced they can't afford the top of
line guys when they hold their pockets out and there's
nothing in them, or when they show us the books,
or when they tell us they have to sell the
team asap in order to keep the lights on. None
of those things have happened. None of those things are
going to happen. So it really is a matter of

(43:49):
preference what they prefer to spend their money on, what
they're looking for in terms.

Speaker 1 (43:54):
Of roster composition.

Speaker 2 (43:57):
They may view the dollar the dollar amount that you
would throw at one guy is something that would make
a lot more sense to throw at a whole bunch.

Speaker 1 (44:04):
Of other guys.

Speaker 2 (44:06):
For me, I want the dude who's going to hit
forty five home runs next year, and that's if he
hits eleven fewer than he did this season. But there
is a big, big difference between can't afford and won't pay.
There are lots of things, lots of things that I

(44:29):
can afford but I ain't paying for. If I own
the Reds, I'd pay for Kyle Schwarber because I could
afford him. Sixteen minutes after four o'clock five, one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty is our phone them. This is ESPN fifteen thirty,
Cincinnati Sports Station follows.

Speaker 8 (44:51):
You buy Modern Office Methods on ESPN fifteen thirty, the
official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaker 2 (44:58):
Twenty one after four This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Moegar
Richard Skinner in just about an hour five one, three, seven,
four nine, fifteen thirty. Let's take a phone call. By
the way, thank you for putting up with me. I
had I was off on Thursday and Friday of last week,

(45:19):
and when I was off, I got like this happens
once a year. I got a cold and then the
cold always ends up screwing with my voice. So it's
not my usually just booming voice, not quite out one
well say it. It's about seventy maybe sixty yesterday. It's
getting incrementally better. So thank you for bearing with me,

(45:40):
because I hate the sound of it as much as
you do. Uh, Mike, You're on ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 1 (45:46):
Mike, Hello, fine mother.

Speaker 5 (45:49):
Did you get my email with my apology?

Speaker 2 (45:52):
I did not get your email with your apology because
I had been very busy today.

Speaker 1 (45:56):
What did you apologize for from my uh?

Speaker 5 (46:01):
For my negative text? I think was the emails I
was sending you last night, taking my aggression out on you,
and you responded very vehemently with your disapproval, and I
don't blame you, so my bad buddy.

Speaker 1 (46:17):
Water under the bridge, Mike, what's on your mind?

Speaker 5 (46:20):
Did you happen to get to see the well. I
was glad he talked about the Reds. Did you happen
to see last week? I don't remember what day the
Arkansas Michigan State.

Speaker 1 (46:30):
Game I did.

Speaker 5 (46:32):
Was that a dandy?

Speaker 3 (46:33):
Or what?

Speaker 4 (46:34):
Boy?

Speaker 5 (46:34):
Here comes Calipari one more time. This guy never quits.

Speaker 4 (46:38):
Man.

Speaker 2 (46:38):
You know, early in the season, probably the most entertaining
game that I have watched. You know, Cincinnati played them
in an exhibition game back on the twenty fourth, twenty fourth,
and twenty fifth, and the main takeaway for most UC
fans was, holy hell, the Bearcats weren't very good, and
they weren't that night.

Speaker 1 (46:55):
I thought Arkansas that night was awesome.

Speaker 5 (47:00):
They're really fast, whether they're almost too fast, Yeah, they're good.

Speaker 2 (47:05):
Yeah that was It's funny you say that because I thought, like,
holy hell, the Bearcats want to play fast. They can't
play as fast and as in control as Arkansas did
in a game that didn't count. And I saw that
to a degree against Michigan State as well.

Speaker 5 (47:19):
Yeah, and of course, and what a classic matchup is
though in calip Paris, it didn't get any better than
that from a coaching standard, it does not, you know,
one one quick baseball thing and then I want to
talk about Jalen Rivers, okay, because I remember telling Tony

(47:39):
just my humble opinion when they drafted him. I kind
of was, I'm always intrigued by these guys out of Miami. Why,
I don't know. And I started reading up on this guy.
Extremely versatile. In his last twenty one games at Miami,
he played at left tackle. He prefers playguard. He's really intelligent.

(48:04):
He's big, six six, three twenty I believe. And I
saw an interview with him after his first appearance. I
believe it could have been preseason, but and they were
asking him about his reaction to the speed of the
NFL and whatever, and he was he was just, you know,

(48:26):
of course, echoing everybody else's sentiments that the speed is
much greater. But I was just extremely impressed with this guy. Mom,
I think Skuy's a limit with this guy.

Speaker 9 (48:36):
I really do.

Speaker 1 (48:37):
Well. You mentioned his size.

Speaker 2 (48:39):
I think they list him as three twenty five, but
he is six', six so he's got the. Size he's
played guard and tackle in. College you, know look at
the very least long, term it feels to me like
he solves a depth. Issue And i'm excited to see

(49:00):
where he takes the experience he has accumulated so far
and takes that in a starting role between now and
the end of the. Season and we talked about this
With paul yesterday THAT i don't think it's inconceivable that
by the end of this year we will know what
the composition of next year's starting offensive line looks, like.

Speaker 1 (49:19):
And Jalen rivers will be a major reason.

Speaker 5 (49:21):
WHY i you, KNOW i, mean OBVIOUSLY i don't know
What paul knows and what you, know but that's just
my gut. Feeling and just after listening to the kid
for a lengthy interview was on somebody's, Podcast, yeah but
it was in our locker. Room and his attitude is
clarity of, speech his. FOCUS i was extremely, impressed extremely.

Speaker 2 (49:47):
IMPRESSED i WATCHED i watched a YouTube video on him
that he did when he was in school and that
it was it was after the draft because you wanted
to learn about some of these. Guys so he is
a dude who is mom and dad were both in The.
Navy he was a great high school. Athlete he played,
basketball he lifted, weights he threw the shot, puts so
he did a little of.

Speaker 1 (50:07):
Everything AND i thought the same.

Speaker 2 (50:09):
Thing look, Up i'm not gonna lie to you and
told YOU i knew Who Jalen rivers was before The
bengals drafted, him but just in the course of trying
to learn about these.

Speaker 1 (50:17):
Guys of all of.

Speaker 2 (50:19):
The things THAT i watched his conversation with AND i
don't know who it. WAS i don't know if it
was somebody who Covers miami sports what it, was but
it came off as very. Impressive and, look when he
got an opportunity to, play he has taken advantage of.

Speaker 1 (50:32):
It and, look if they're ever going.

Speaker 2 (50:35):
To have an elite offensive line, ever not league, average not. Merely,
okay the only way that is gonna happen is if
they can nail it in the, draft which means The
Amarus mims pick has to work. Out a lot of
signs pointing to the fact that it will means That
Dylan fairchild pick.

Speaker 1 (50:53):
Has to work.

Speaker 2 (50:54):
Out it certainly may and then if you can get
a bonus by getting a guy in the fifth round
to stick as a, starter oh, boy it accelerates that process.

Speaker 5 (51:02):
Entirely, Yeah i'm very bullish on. This maybe we're underestimating
where this group can. Go if we get rid Of
Lewis patrick Or patrick and a couple of these other dead.
BEATS i want TO i shouldn't say that they're playing
ball and making. Money i'm. Not but you know, what
one thing he did say that impressed me most was he, said,

(51:26):
look you got to understand there the difference between college
and the. Press he, said EVERYBODY i play against up,
here if it's in, practice they're all pretty e weite.

Speaker 9 (51:35):
Players they just. Are that's why they're up. Here and people,
said and he, said people have to realize that it
takes a long time for a young guy who's not
used to. This because he even, said sometimes will play
SOME fbs teams or this and, that and you can
kind of put let your hair down a little. Bit
but he, said up, here.

Speaker 10 (51:54):
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

Speaker 5 (51:55):
No matter who you're. Playing, yeah, WELL i think it's positive.

Speaker 2 (52:00):
THING i think the play of the offensive line over
the last few weeks is. ENCOURAGING i would stop short
of saying that they're said for the, FUTURE i need
to see another half a, season and certainly do believe
That Joe flacco has helped make them look.

Speaker 1 (52:14):
Better BUT i do think that over the last couple of.

Speaker 2 (52:16):
Weeks if you've watched the offensive, LINE i think for
the most, part you've come away pretty pleased with how they've.

Speaker 5 (52:22):
Played, yeah the old man might have to go at
left tack or he might.

Speaker 2 (52:26):
Be the flu but maybe maybe, maybe but he, is
he is under, contract and we'll. See there have been
times this year Where Orlando brown's played like a guy
who's your?

Speaker 5 (52:36):
Age, yeah good, Shot, Hey Jeff. PASSING i get a
kick out listening to. Him he's pretty young, guy as
well connected as he, is and once he just looks
a lot younger than he really.

Speaker 3 (52:51):
Is But.

Speaker 5 (52:53):
Patrick will interviewed in the other day and he, said,
look do The dodgers have just a lock on On japanese?
Talent and he, said you, know you really are. Right they,
do and they've cultivated this over the, years and that
they've made not just the players In, japan but the
folks In japan the baseball fans believe that The dodgers

(53:17):
are proud to all these Good japanese players In dodger.
Blue and the sales pitch has. Worked they have a
first basement over, there and his fifty six home runs
last year with one hundred and forty some RBIs which
Means freddy would have to either go to THE dh
or he WOULD. Dh BUT i thought it was an

(53:37):
interesting comment that The dodgers have cultivated this relationship with
The japanese baseball.

Speaker 1 (53:42):
Word, YEAH i, Mean Shoeo tani did go.

Speaker 2 (53:46):
To anaheim, first right of, course SO i mean that's
that's worth pointing. Out but, YEAH i mean Between, yamamoto
who's the Reigning World SERIES, mvp And Roki sasaki is
on that. Team and you, know if there's a such
thing as A Global Baseball Superstar. Show, Hey, odannie The
dodgers don't have the market, cornered but they've got some

(54:08):
of the biggest. Names my guy got a run, Man, okay.

Speaker 5 (54:11):
Thanks, moll appreciate it all, right four p.

Speaker 1 (54:13):
THIRTY espn fifteen.

Speaker 2 (54:14):
Thirty we'll talk gambling kind of sports and money With Amy.

Speaker 1 (54:18):
Wagner, next.

Speaker 2 (54:21):
It's, wednesday which means we talk sports and business and
money with our Friend Amy wagner From Dean Dorton Private.
Wealth she is a wealth, advisor she is my. Friend
she's here to make us smarter when it comes to
the world of sports and money and.

Speaker 1 (54:35):
Business, amy what's.

Speaker 11 (54:36):
Up, hey how are?

Speaker 1 (54:38):
You i'm Well i'm.

Speaker 2 (54:40):
Good this baseball betting, STORY i think is interesting from
a number of different. Angles it's not necessarily getting the
play that THE nba guys, did but to have a
couple of, NOW i guess we'll call them Former Cleveland
guardians pitchers who are being indicted because it's being alleged
that they were fixing. Pitches because you could bet on

(55:00):
the speed of a, pitch you could bet on the
outcome of a, pitch and these guys were not necessarily
trying to lose games or not necessarily trying to have bad,
performances but they were throwing certain pitches and their associates
were benefiting from. It SO i think for a lot of,
folks you're not going to put the toothpaste back in
the two because every major sports league has gotten in

(55:23):
bed with gambling. Companies and for full, DISCLOSURE i do
spots for. FanDuel i use, FanDuel i like sports, wagering
but every sports league has partnerships with gambling. Companies in your,
opinion how problematic are they and how lucrative are?

Speaker 10 (55:38):
They, WELL i, think first of, ALL i have to
go back and level that Where i'm coming from, here
right as as a wealth, advisor as a freinancial. Advisor
this is not the world THAT i tend to live
in as far As i'm not a huge sports betting. Person,
HOWEVER i do have some nephews and a brother who
are a very big into this.

Speaker 5 (55:59):
World.

Speaker 10 (56:00):
RIGHT i am more of A, Hey i'm gonna spend
money on, something it better be.

Speaker 11 (56:04):
A long term play in the, market rather than sports.
Betting so let's back. Up i'm trying to think of
how long ago this, was maybe seven eight years. AGO
i went to my brother's house to watch A Super bowl.
Game this whole neighborhood was.

Speaker 10 (56:17):
There i'm used to betting on the you fill out
the little block or whatever they put the numbers, in
if that's the, score the end of, that, yes exactly,
Exactly so like in this you might laugh at this
BECAUSE i think for people in a certain world like
this is like duh. Amy but my brother had in

(56:38):
his office projected on the wall an entire spreadsheet.

Speaker 7 (56:43):
Of prop, bets and it was an entirely new, world
an entirely new concept to me that you could have
bet on what color gator rade was going to be
thrown on the winnington coach's. Head at the end of the,
game like what like was mind boggling to. Me AND

(57:03):
i think it's just so interesting now because you have these,
players you have these.

Speaker 11 (57:10):
Coaches let's go back To Pete. Rose that's WHERE i
always go back.

Speaker 5 (57:13):
To.

Speaker 11 (57:13):
Right vilified obviously.

Speaker 10 (57:18):
For maybe changing the outcome of the, game or betting
on the outcome of a. GAME i wonder if this
is from a player's, perspective from a coach's, perspective a
slightly easier pill to, swallow, right because if you want
to split hairs, HERE i think you. Can i'm not
necessarily doing something that's going to throw the outcome of this.

Speaker 11 (57:39):
Game i'm simply saying.

Speaker 10 (57:41):
That the first pitch during this at bet is probably
going to go directly into the. Dirt so if you
want to bet on a ball here rather than the,
strike it's probably a safe, bet, Right AND i think
that is the slippery slope that this goes.

Speaker 11 (57:58):
Down it's not all.

Speaker 10 (57:59):
Or nothing thing anymore for people who can change the
outcomes of these. Things these bets allow someone to, Say
i'm going to put the yellow gatorade in the bucket
And i'm going to tell a few, people, Right and
it seems kind of.

Speaker 11 (58:15):
Harmless But i'm not saying it.

Speaker 10 (58:16):
Is But i'm just saying you mentioned the toothpaste coming
out of the. Tube it's all over the, place you,
know because it's. Sports betting has changed so significantly over
the course of even just the past few.

Speaker 11 (58:30):
Years so that's exactly what we have.

Speaker 10 (58:32):
At play, here, RIGHT i mean with THESE nba, players
you with players with these allegations agains, Straight you've got
allegations AGAINST i pulled myself out of the.

Speaker 11 (58:43):
GAME i, SAID i was. Hurt that's going to change
the outcome of the, game which.

Speaker 10 (58:47):
Is very DIFFERENT i think than someone or at least
someone telling themselves this is very different of this one
pitch in this one.

Speaker 11 (58:53):
Game that's the only Thing i'm changing, here.

Speaker 10 (58:56):
Right and SO i can't imagine that these props bets
are going to go.

Speaker 11 (59:00):
Down i'm very slippery.

Speaker 10 (59:01):
Slope but who knows what's going to be happening and
who would be participating in These AND i think you,
know as someone who's betting on, these it's just so
interesting how like instant gratification.

Speaker 11 (59:14):
Is we're no longer even going to wait until the
end of the game to see the, outcome.

Speaker 10 (59:19):
Right we can bet on what's going to happen in
the first minute or quarter or whatever you want about.

Speaker 2 (59:24):
ON i think and it's weird and, LOOK i like sports.
Wagering i'm not going to hide from. That i'm glad it's.
LEGAL i think it's better when it's. Legal, sure BUT
i do think it's we've opened up THIS i don't
know room where now an athlete can, say, hey, LOOK
i wasn't not trying to help our team. Win you,

(59:45):
know in the case of THE nba, players they just
took themselves out. Right, yeah so, hey you can't accuse
me of missing shots intentionally or intentionally playing bad. DEFENSE
i just didn't. Play and in the case of these two,
CHUCKLEHEADS i still might have retired the. HITTERS i still
may have An Emmanuel class's, CASE i still may have

(01:00:07):
gotten the.

Speaker 1 (01:00:07):
Safe but in this one particular, instance, YEAH i.

Speaker 2 (01:00:11):
Throw a, ball which, which by the, way one pitchers
all the time will throw a pitch that is not
necessarily designed to be a strike where it's it's designed
to move the hitter's eye, level not to get too
deep into the weeds of.

Speaker 1 (01:00:24):
Pitching that to me is going to be really really
hard to.

Speaker 2 (01:00:28):
Police if we continue to have prop, bets And i'm
the first to ADMIT i like making prop bet.

Speaker 10 (01:00:34):
WAGERS i, mean from my, PERSPECTIVE i think they're more
attractive as.

Speaker 11 (01:00:41):
WELL i mean BECAUSE i do not Have.

Speaker 10 (01:00:44):
Moa, eggers you, know reams of knowledge of these. Sports
BUT i can bet on one thing, right you, know
and feel pretty good about, it and hey if it doesn't.

Speaker 11 (01:00:55):
Go AND i think the.

Speaker 10 (01:00:58):
Reminder THAT i would say here is with everything, like
it has to be.

Speaker 11 (01:01:03):
Money that is extra. Money it has to be, money you.

Speaker 10 (01:01:06):
KNOW i mean what we see when people get into
major issues with sports betting or any kind of, betting
is they get in over their heads and then they
are throwing good money at bad money trying to bring
things back under their.

Speaker 11 (01:01:18):
Control once you've lost, control you've lost.

Speaker 10 (01:01:20):
Control there's there's no just the next, hand just the next,
bet just the next.

Speaker 11 (01:01:24):
Game it just doesn't work out that.

Speaker 10 (01:01:26):
Way so if you're betting responsibly with money, that's by the,
way not your march for your retirement or your vacation
or your kid's college. Fund you, KNOW i think that
that's sports, betting you, know and brought betting too can
be a lot of. Fun SO i would, say you,
know one thing is just to think like you, know
everything in. Moderation but second of, all we're still a

(01:01:48):
little bit in the Wild west, here you, know and
this is all, new and so for an amount of,
TIME i think you have to, expect as someone who's
actively participating in, this that they're going to be things
like this that pop up until we can fully get
our brains and our hands wrapped around this and provide

(01:02:08):
a slightly safer environment for people to.

Speaker 11 (01:02:11):
Bed and if that is such a thing that could, EXIST.

Speaker 2 (01:02:14):
I think also when it comes to the two particulars
involved here and even THE nba, guys you, know in
each case there may have been a good short term.

Speaker 1 (01:02:22):
Reward.

Speaker 2 (01:02:23):
Right what's being alleged about these two guys is they
made a couple of grand for throwing individual. Pitches and
that sounds nice until you put at, risk In Emmanuel class's,
case a multi million dollar, contract, right and a career
that could end up being so lucrative that it provides

(01:02:43):
his family with generation's worth of.

Speaker 11 (01:02:46):
Wealth and that's a great.

Speaker 10 (01:02:49):
Point and, listen this applies to so many other financial.
Decisions AND i say this to my clients all the
time when you're making a money, decision playing, right DO
i throw this pitch and make the five thousand dollars
Because i'll take the extra five thousand dollars right, now
not thinking about what happens in the. Future what you're
not thinking about is there's a couple of people in the.

Speaker 11 (01:03:11):
Room every time you make that. Decision there's your current
self and your future.

Speaker 10 (01:03:15):
Self we're always thinking about the current, self give me
the money, now not ever thinking about wait a, second long.
Term this is putting my entire, contract my entire, career
everything That i've worked for SINCE i was a, kid
and first touch to, baseball or you, know in our
kind of everyday, world when we buy the car, now

(01:03:35):
when we spend double what we can on vacation or
whatever that is put money into our four oh one
k you have to balance right between what we need
now that's going to make us happy, now that's going.

Speaker 11 (01:03:48):
To get current needs and also future.

Speaker 10 (01:03:51):
Needs AND i would argue that's a, balance and of,
course obviously a balance that these dudes were not striking
when they chose to make these decisions that have now
put their career in.

Speaker 11 (01:04:01):
JEOPARDY i, mean.

Speaker 10 (01:04:01):
They're facing all kinds of, charges you, know wire, fraud money,
laundering all of those things certainly not something that you
want people talking about when they're talking about what kind
of pitches you're.

Speaker 2 (01:04:12):
Throwing Amy, Wagner wealth advisor From Dean. DORTON a couple
of other. Things really. Quick we talked about the YouTube
VERSUS espn. THING i guess now YouTube subscribers are getting
a twenty dollars credit because they can't watch stuff Like
saturday college football ON espn Or monday night.

Speaker 1 (01:04:27):
Football is there any end of this in? Sight there's STILL.

Speaker 10 (01:04:31):
I, mean there's still negotiating, here AND i WONDER i
don't have YouTube. Tv so a subscription monthly now for
base is A a subscription is about eighty three. Dollars they
had kind of thrown out there several several days ago
that maybe there would be the opportunity to get some
kind of. Refund now that has come to fruition, after

(01:04:53):
by the, way missing you, know two weekends of college,
football And i'm sure people are.

Speaker 11 (01:04:56):
Really beside themselves at this. POINT a couple of.

Speaker 10 (01:04:59):
Things if you're someone who might be getting this, is
first of, all you should get an email at some.
Point but, second there's a whole and you, know it's
like they never make these things. Easy you, know if
you don't automatically log in and have everything, there you
have to go to settings and then you have to
go to, updates and then you have to click through seventeen.

Speaker 11 (01:05:19):
Different things and then click, clean, clean the refund or.

Speaker 10 (01:05:24):
Whatever so for those who haven't gott an, email first of,
all check your inbox to see if it's. There, secondly
looks like there is a way that you can do
it through the system as it's set. Up you're just
going to have to click through several. Things there are
directions online for.

Speaker 11 (01:05:37):
That but, listen twenty bucks is twenty.

Speaker 10 (01:05:39):
Bucks if you're upset that you're not being able to
watch your favorite sport ball right, now well this is
a way to at least get something for.

Speaker 2 (01:05:46):
It get your twenty bucks and then open a fan
duel account and wager it on a, player.

Speaker 11 (01:05:52):
Wager it on The guardian's. Pictures that's. Right that seems like.

Speaker 2 (01:05:56):
To, go all, RIGHT i got SOMETHING i want you
to touch on next. Week tell you what it is?

Speaker 1 (01:06:00):
Now are you? Ready sound?

Speaker 4 (01:06:02):
Good?

Speaker 2 (01:06:02):
ALL i read a story about HOW ai is going
to impact how we buy, tickets especially in the secondary,
market AND i want to talk about that next.

Speaker 1 (01:06:11):
Week, okay so.

Speaker 11 (01:06:12):
Many thoughts on. That, Yep i'm ready to go there you.

Speaker 1 (01:06:16):
Go all, Right thank you so.

Speaker 2 (01:06:17):

Thirty Cincinnati Sports. STATION i can tell, you maybe not
so much what's going on in THE nfl right, now
BUT i can tell you what's going on in. BASEBALL
i can tell you what's.

Speaker 1 (01:06:49):
Going on with The. Reds they have made A they've
made a.

Speaker 2 (01:06:53):
Move they have acquired from THE La dodgers Catcher Ben
Rourtvett rotvett arted last year with The rays and then
was traded to The dodgers in the three team deal
that saw The reds Acquire Zach lttel actually started the
first two games against The reds for The dodgers in

(01:07:14):
the postseason and the first two games of The National
League Division series Against philadelphia Before Will smith.

Speaker 1 (01:07:21):
Got back from injury and reclaimed his. Position So Ben rhurtvett.

Speaker 2 (01:07:26):
Catcher he has been claimed off waivers by The reds
from The Los Angeles. Dodgers NOW i just gave you
some background on rotvet him playing in the.

Speaker 1 (01:07:36):
Postseason he might be. Going, well what about his.

Speaker 2 (01:07:39):
Numbers he is a career one ninety hitter across two
hundred and twenty Seven Big league games with nine home,
runs including one last. Season Ben, ROTVETT i Know i'm
excited and you should be as. Well uh four, nine

(01:08:00):
fifteen thirty is our. Number eight sixty six seven two three,
seven seven. Six those are our phone. NUMBERS i WAS
i was looking up to see The Ben roardvetz. Stuff
computer completely. Stopped actually had he. Had he drove in
a run in the first game Against cincinnati and had

(01:08:20):
a couple of, hits scored a couple.

Speaker 1 (01:08:22):
Of runs in game.

Speaker 2 (01:08:23):
Two those playoff games were just over a month. Ago
they feel like a lifetime. Ago the postseason in baseball
was so. Long there's been so much football stuff going,
On lots of Different balls were juggling that The reds
in the postseason feels like forever. Ago Joe flak who
not throwing At bengals practice, today WHICH i don't know

(01:08:45):
if that is a shocking, development but it's an eyebrow raising.

Speaker 1 (01:08:52):
One it's not a new.

Speaker 2 (01:08:52):
One he didn't throw in The wednesday before their last
game against The Chicago, bears and we saw how well he.
PLAYED i think the question that looms over this team
is one will last coming up in the five o'clock,
hour Plus uce wins last, Night kentucky loses last. Night
The bearcats now played the team that Beat kentucky a
week From. Friday we'll get to that coming up in
the five o'clock hour as well ON espn fifteen, Thirty

(01:09:16):
Cincinnati Sports Station, Live Bengals Nation, Lives What's up moweg
OR espn fifteen. Thirty thanks for listening. Today hopefully you're
having like the most Awesome wednesday of all. Time bengals
game plan an hour from, now as soon as we're
done With Dan, Horden Dave, lapham two guys who have their.
Voices this is the Bud light five O'clock Happy. Hour

(01:09:37):
it comes your. Way thanks to our friends at Bud,
light easy to, drink easy to. ENJOY i could go
for a nice cold Bud light right. NOW i may
have had one after THE Uc dayton game last, night
The bearcats winning over The flyers at the Fifth Third.

Speaker 1 (01:09:52):
Arena you, know we started the show by talking about.

Speaker 6 (01:09:54):
It.

Speaker 1 (01:09:54):
Tonight i've probably HAD i don't, know eight to.

Speaker 2 (01:09:59):
Ten conversations with people either via text or here in
the office or at lunch. Today twenty four, turnovers, yes
twenty four. Turnovers, now there's two different ways to look at.
That from A uc, perspective one, is holy, hell is
this team going to be that sloppy with the? Basketball
because if, so they're in for some. Beatings they're in

(01:10:23):
for some beatings in The Big. Twelve they're in for
a beating Against, louisville in for beatings against teams Like
clemson In.

Speaker 1 (01:10:29):
Georgia that is not good enough and like looming over this,
season at least the beginning of.

Speaker 2 (01:10:35):
It from a Bear cap perspective is this last year's
team underwhelmed a year ago at this, TIME i think
there are a lot of us And i'm raising my.
HAND i think there are a lot of us who
were almost taking AN ncaa tournament bid last, season for,
granted and as it turned, out they didn't come even.
Close it's a thoroughly disappointing. Season and it was a

(01:10:58):
season THAT i think of a lot of folks Put
West miller squarely in their, crosshairs and, so you, know
and then you kind of saw how things unfolded once
the season, ended, RIGHT a team filled with players that
collectively kind of felt like they. Underachieved saw those players

(01:11:19):
go to other. Programs some of them have gotten their
seasons off to very good. Starts they didn't go you
know LOWER i was gonna, say fps they didn't go
to mid, majors know if they went to places Like,
Baylor Saint, John's Penn, State, northwestern.

Speaker 1 (01:11:39):
They didn't go To division two.

Speaker 2 (01:11:40):
Schools so good, players but the pieces last year never
really completely. Fit and because of, THAT i think there's
this skepticism ABOUT uc basketball coming into this season and
a little jadedness and a little, wariness.

Speaker 1 (01:11:59):
AND i think a real sense OF i need to
see it BEFORE i believe it with this.

Speaker 2 (01:12:03):
Bunch and so you might win a, game and they,
did and you might do a lot of things well
in that, game which last, night you see did but
you're looking for a lot of reasons to suggest that
this season is going to be dramatically, different dramatically, different
and it's hard to feel that way when you watch
them be as sloppy with the basketball as they've been

(01:12:25):
over their first three, games AND i think in particular
last night now to a, degree the other way of
looking at things, is, yeah they turned it over twenty four.

Speaker 1 (01:12:35):
Times they also won relatively.

Speaker 2 (01:12:39):
Comfortably dayton was obviously very complicit in its own, demise
missing all those outside, shots the worst outside shooting performance
BY ud team in eleven, years and as the game went,
ON i, think in particular in the second, half lots
of really good looks FOR, ud.

Speaker 1 (01:12:56):
But The bearcats did turn it over twenty four.

Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
Times also missed a ton of free, throws and they've
been a bad free throw shooting team so far in
the first three, games miss. Fourteen last night the percentage
was like sixty percent on a night Where Dayde thomas
went ten for.

Speaker 1 (01:13:09):
Ten it's kind of hard to do as a. Team
but those are things that you can.

Speaker 2 (01:13:16):
Fix those are things that you can, Address those are
things that you could put in the rear view mirror
and almost reverse over the course of an entire. Season
if they, do there's lots of things to suggest this
team could be pretty good this.

Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
Year if they, don't, well.

Speaker 2 (01:13:38):
Then what has become painfully familiar FOR uc, fans myself
included is having The bearcats and they not pop up.

Speaker 1 (01:13:43):
On the screen On Selection. Sunday we will, see we will.

Speaker 2 (01:13:46):
See but, yes twenty four turnovers last. Night that ain't
gonna cut it in most, games the games against better.
Competition eleven after five, o'clock and it ain't gonna cut
it Against. Louisville THEN i thought they were the bigger
story last night Than kentucky. Was although The wildcats JUST
i simply think offensively in the two stretches where they

(01:14:08):
dug themselves an eighteen point hole in a twenty point,
hole just offensively weren't good enough and didn't rebound the
ball well. Enough they had some of their own issues.
Defensively that's always the case when another team scores in
the mid. Nineties but A uk team that at times
this year very early has looked awesome offensively had their

(01:14:28):
moments last. NIGHT i thought when they cut it to
four in the second, HALF i legitimately thought they were
gonna win the, game but you can't dig those holes
they dug last.

Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
Night and they did primarily because of their.

Speaker 2 (01:14:40):
OFFENSE a couple Of bengals notes Before Richard skinner joins
Us Joe flacco not throwing, today which was kind of
the plan a couple of weeks, ago and then he
threw On, thursday played in the game On. Sunday The
Joe flacco story should be right now out the best

(01:15:01):
in The National Football. League it should, be but it's
not because The bengals aren't, winning and a quarterback can
do a lot of cool things, statistically and it doesn't
matter if his team doesn't, win even if his team
not winning is not his.

Speaker 1 (01:15:13):
Fault he should be the best story in THE nfl right, now.

Speaker 2 (01:15:19):
Getting traded by The browns to The, bengals having a
couple of days to prepare for his first, game almost
instantly looking the, part helping them upset The, steelers helping
them score eighty points over the course of their next two.

Speaker 1 (01:15:34):
Games he should be the best story in THE nfl right.

Speaker 2 (01:15:38):
Now my guess Is Joe burrow gives it a go
On thanksgiving Against baltimore and if The bengals are five and,
six it's gonna feel like game on. Anything shy of,
that there's gonna be a good question about how much
sense it makes to have him out. There WHAT i
wonder is what happens If Joe flacco turns into a. Pumpkin,

(01:16:03):
now turning into a pumpkin might not mean that he
becomes a completely inep. Quarterback turning into a pumpkin means
he's not as awesome as he has. Been we have
spent a lot of time over the last year and
a half watching The bengals waste awesome individual game and
season long. Performances it's kind of disfranchise as identity right,

(01:16:28):
now right they waste great quarterback. Play six times Since
week three of last, year The bengals have scored more
than thirty points and. Lost that shouldn't happen to your
team six times in a. Decade it's happened six times
in a season and a.

Speaker 4 (01:16:45):
Half that's.

Speaker 2 (01:16:47):
Remarkable When Joe burrow is having great, games it's just
it's the. Norm it's what he's supposed to. Do Joe
flacco has had a great, career terrific. Career eighteen. Years
Super BOWL mvp made a lot of. Money he played
on a lot of different teams like, that dude has,
had especially for a guy coming From, delaware a terrific.

Speaker 1 (01:17:11):
Career but it still feels like his play over the
last couple of weeks is not the.

Speaker 2 (01:17:18):
Rule it's the, exception as awesome as it has, been
even if you acknowledge that he's got the easy runway
of having guys Like chas And higgins to throw, to.

Speaker 1 (01:17:29):
Feels like the.

Speaker 2 (01:17:30):
Exception what happens if the exception is not the rule On?
Sunday what happens over the next couple of? Weeks and
LIKE i asked this, RHETORICALLY i don't think there's an.
Answer the answer should, Be, Well Al golden's unit steps, Up.

Speaker 1 (01:17:48):
I'm gonna.

Speaker 2 (01:17:49):
Guess and If i'm wrong about, this, MAN i am
wrong about. This it's really hard to score eighty points
over two. Games it's hard to average. Forty bengals offense
might may play really well Against New, england probably not
gonna score.

Speaker 1 (01:18:04):
Forty what happens if they don't score forty On?

Speaker 2 (01:18:09):
Sunday you, Know Zach taylor said he thinks this is
a championship caliber defense like, that that's a thing that
he talked about after the bye or during the bye,
WEEK i should, Say, okay that better happened, Now like
you've shown faith in the, Coordinator you've shown faith in
the guys on. Defense no changes were. Made that means

(01:18:35):
your faith gets rewarded, now not Once burrow comes, back
not In. December so like that's the storyline of the
game to. Me can The bengals put themselves in a
position Where Joe burrow is getting closer and it? Matters
and if the answer is, yes at some point it's
gonna have to come because the defense did something.

Speaker 1 (01:18:57):
Good where can you count on this defense to do something?

Speaker 2 (01:19:00):
Good and the arrow is pointing at the key decision
makers because with the benefit of a season's worth of
evidence to suggest that maybe they're not where they need to,
be defensive coaching staff or any number of these, players
they maintain the status. Quo does maintaining the status quo

(01:19:24):
have a short term? Payoff if it, doesn't On, sunday
they're going to lose it does then maybe game on
sixteen minutes after five, O'clock Richard skinner.

Speaker 8 (01:19:36):
Next queenati brought to you an Buy, Postman law And
Vice Skyline chile ON espn fifteen Thirty The Cincinnati he's With.

Speaker 1 (01:19:49):
Local twelve And local twelve dot.

Speaker 2 (01:19:51):
Com he joins us On. Wednesdays bengals play The. Steelers On,
Sunday skinny is. Here how's it?

Speaker 1 (01:19:57):
Going it's?

Speaker 4 (01:19:59):
GOING i Mean monday was the THING a couple of
us on the, BEAT i think believe when we were
asked to come down there a little bit early that
one o'clock from moved Up Zach killer press conference if
someone was getting, fired and boy were we, wrong and
and and the news that we did get should have
been met with more than the shoulder shrug THAT i gave. It, Like,
OKAY i, mean you, KNOW I Joe burrows great and,

(01:20:20):
all but uh and. Bust somehow this defense gets? Better
does it?

Speaker 11 (01:20:24):
Does is?

Speaker 4 (01:20:25):
It is it gonna matter record? Wise and does it
matter at? All?

Speaker 2 (01:20:28):
Yeah and that's that's not your fault for shrugging your.
Shoulders it's not my fault for shrugging my. Shoulders it's
the fault of this. Defense, yes, no no.

Speaker 4 (01:20:36):
DOUBT i mean that's the. Thing so here in the second,
year second half or after the after the bye, week
what's changing for the. Better it's actually kind of, changing
maybe for the. Worse If Trey henderson doesn't, Play he's
already been announced as doubtful By Zach, taylor which what
means he's not going to. Play so can the rookie
linebackers take a step?

Speaker 3 (01:20:57):
Forward?

Speaker 4 (01:20:58):
Okay? Yeah? Maybe Can Miles murphy show a?

Speaker 3 (01:21:00):
Pulse?

Speaker 4 (01:21:00):
Okay maybe Can Gino stone And jordan battle? Tackle? Okay?
Maybe Can I'll golden find a magic elixistematically for his
island have missed the? Toys? Okay? Maybe, boy that's a
lot to hope for Man and as we always, know
hope is hope is is not a. Plan so, Again
i'm all For Joe burrow coming. BACK i just hope

(01:21:21):
he's not coming back quarterbacking the three and eight or
if he comes back to The buffalo game a three
and nine team and playing at the string in a losing.
Season at that, point all the thrill of that wears
off because guess, what that lingering issue of this defense
being awful lingers into the, offseason and AS i think
we all, know this is not a one off season Sixty.

Speaker 1 (01:21:40):
At that, point should he even?

Speaker 4 (01:21:41):
PLAY i say, Yes it's what he does for a.
Living if he's fully and Again i'll give you a CAVEAT.
MO i he's got to be fully, healthy not LIKE
i feel, OKAY i feel, GOOD i feel LIKE i
can play through. This, no you feel one hundred percent
fine and you go out there and. PLAY I i
guarantee you if when he if and when he does,
that AND i do think he does that at some,

(01:22:02):
point whether it's The buffalo game or you, know he's
targeting That thursday Night thanksgiving. GAME i think for him
it's just he's just so darn. Competitive he wants to,
play but you gotta and if there's no, game, TAM i,
mean the guy can tell YOU i feel, great and
he shows himself. Great he's not limped around because he's
grit in his. Teeth you, know hopefully doctors can figure
out if he's one hundred percent and he can be.
HONEST i think he needs to be honest. Here i'm

(01:22:23):
one hundred, percent, Man i'm good to. GO i don't
think he was ever honest with the cast, situation and
it lingered for a, while and so just be honest.
Here if you're not good to go and it's a lost,
season you don't need to push. It. Man we'll pick
this into the offseason and get you a hundred percent
by next. Year but if he feels one hundred percent
and he wants to put four or five games more
under his, belt more power to. HIM i don't think
anybody should blame him for.

Speaker 12 (01:22:44):
That would they use any of that time to change
how they play? Offensively that's a good question, too because
it you, know we talked about this When Jake browning
came in in twenty twenty three and went under center,
more and they did some more play action stuff and
some more bootleg, stuff and they ran the ball better
and all those.

Speaker 4 (01:23:00):
THINGS i sure. Hope so you, KNOW i know what he.
LOVES i get that you want to cater to what he.
LOVES i, mean cater to what he. Loves got you
almost five thousand yards passing in forty three twenty the last,
Year so that was. Great and the offense isn't the.
Issue AND i think that's the. Thing the offense isn't the.
Issue it hasn't been the. Issue can it be an
issue in a single game? Occasionally? Sure Can Can joe

(01:23:22):
being in the shot dollar time mean it be a problem? Occasionally?
Sure but when you're putting up those kind of, numbers
and you know you score thirty three points or more
and lose four games last. Year it's the defense, man
that's What that's what. IS i JUST i wrote that.
Today this is all. About this isn't about any other
than what does this defense show us this? Week what
does it show us that it does? Better does it tackle?

(01:23:42):
Better does it rush the passer? Better does it have
to run? Better and by, BETTER i, Mean i'm not
talking about holding The steelers to ten. Points by, Better
i'm just talking about keeping you in the game for goodness,
sakes and the offense not having to go out and
put up thirty five points and forty points to. Win
because that's as Great Asyo flaco was. Playing that's just
not sustainable for any. Team, again we saw. This you're
With Joe burrow playing.

Speaker 1 (01:24:02):
Quarterback is it time to refer To Shamar stewart's rookie
season as a?

Speaker 4 (01:24:07):
Wash? YEAH i thought you were gonna use the word,
bust AND i hate to do that, early So i'm
glad you. DIDN'T i think a wash is a good
word for. THAT i don't think he's gonna play this,
week and who knows how long that's gonna. BE i
Mean zach said today it's it's a week to week.
Thing but he's played in five games and in five
games he has six, tackles two of them. Solo good for.

(01:24:29):
Him he got two solo stops in five, games no quarterback,
sacks and one quarterback. Hit wash is a good. WORD
i just hope that we're not talking about him in
terms Of Miles murphy as next Season lingers and then
the season after, that and we want to give it
one more old good college. TRY i just hope we're not.
There BUT i, mean, again this was this is the
fear for everybody of freak on tape can be freakish at,

(01:24:53):
times and things he does but just doesn't. PRODUCE i,
mean why would you go against what he did in
college and, go, yeah but he he's got these. Traits,
okay that's all well and. GOOD i love the traits.
TOO i love the traits in the third and he
had a first round, grade SO i shouldn't ding him for.
That he did have a first round grade from a
lot of. People but at what point you, go, well
he had a sack Against Bowling, green in a sack
Against Arkansas state or whoever it. Was, boy he's gonna sack,

(01:25:16):
college or if he's gonna SACK nfl, quarterbacks you ain't
getting home in THE. Sec and it's hard to get
home in THE, sec, RIGHT i mean THE nfl dudes
all over the. Place what makes you think you're getting
home in? COLLEGE i, mean excuse me in the.

Speaker 2 (01:25:26):
Pros, so you, know we talk a lot about the
fact That Duke tobin hasn't everybody cross and everybody's cross,
hairs and folks want to see.

Speaker 1 (01:25:35):
DIFFERENT i thought he was the.

Speaker 4 (01:25:36):
One O'CLOCK i thought he was the one o'clock. CALL i,
really you, did my witness. MOW i thought he was
the one o'clock.

Speaker 2 (01:25:40):
Call you thought when when he got the call to
come down there that The bengals had an, announcement you
thought it was going to Be Duke tobin gentt.

Speaker 4 (01:25:45):
Let, GO i.

Speaker 1 (01:25:47):
Did does that mean that you believe that is on
the table when the season?

Speaker 4 (01:25:52):
ENDS i it MEANS i think it should. BE i
THINK i Know i've written the piece that's kind of
called through his head and pointing the finger blame it himy.
NIGHT i get. You you can people on the flip
side can, argue you, know he built some pretty good
rosters in, in you, know under the Mar in The
Marvin lewis. ERA i Think marvin had a little more
say so Than zach did when it came to to

(01:26:13):
draft and personnel and those, things AND i think he
wrestled some of that away When zach became the head.
Coach and in, fact we had a coach told us
a couple and this wasn't off the, record this is
on the record that you, know we asked where does
the buck stop when it? Comes he, goes, well the
buck stops At Duke, okay that's that's that's where the buck.
Stops we're gonna go with. That the buck stops At Duke.
Tobin so at what point do you, say, yeah, man

(01:26:34):
we got to really fix this, defense and we're gonna
let you be the guy to try to fix. It,
no you've done all these recent, drafts had been with
the knowledge that you're superstars and you knew who they,
Were tea And jamar And. Joe and then you Signed
Orlando brown for a nice piece of change because you
didn't have a left Tackling i'm fine with. That you
went to the free age, murder got probably the best
guy available at the, time and you're paying him. Accordingly

(01:26:57):
you started drafting on the other side of the, ball
KNOWING i have guys on rookie contracts before, me and
none of them are for the most, part other THAN
dj turnering to a degree back till none of, them
or in, fact in some, cases they're an unmitigated. Disaster
i'm not a HUGE pff. Guy it has its, place,
Right But Demetrius, knight WHEN i wrote a piece last,
week was ranked eightyeth eighty two linebackers in the league FROM,

(01:27:19):
pff And Brett carter was rank eighty. Two you, know
and your eyeballs kind of see, that, right, like, yeah
they're they're. Struggling and Again i'm gonna give them benefit of.
Doubt two rookies playing side by. Side that shouldn't. Happen,
honestly that shouldn't. Happen it did by, default and here we.
Are they have to play through. Mistakes now. Again that's
the one that's my one grown hope is, That, okay

(01:27:40):
these guys have seen a bunch of. Things they had
a week to. Decompress where it's not prep, prep prep.
Prepp let's go, again prep, prep, Prepp let's go. Again
so week to maybe even look at their own stuff and, go,
Man i'm a. MESS dupd this and this and. This
i'm capable of fix. It that's my one small hope
On defense is those two guys finally start to get, it,
because LIKE i, said i'd like to See jordan haadling ginostone.

(01:28:01):
Tackle i've got two seasons worse of evidence to shows
they just are not going to do. It it just doesn't. Happen.
Correct so you, Know i've seen this pass rush look
like literally velcro where they rush and they get stuck on,
dudes and it's not like a series here and a
down there and a series there and a series. Here
they just get. Stuck and, oh by the, way they're
after best pass rusher this week in all? Likelihood so
what makes me think that's going to be? BETTER i

(01:28:22):
hope it. IS i, mean don't get me, WRONG i
know you hope it. Is BUT i think we've got
a pretty good level of, evidence not over nine, games
but over two seasons worth that it's a lot of personnel.

Speaker 3 (01:28:33):
Issues.

Speaker 2 (01:28:34):
Correct so WHAT i was going to ask is you
mentioned looking At Shamar, stewart not seeing any production but
taking him because you love the. Measurables If Duke tobin
is still running things this, offseason could you see a
philosophical shift where they want to emphasize a little bit
more of what a guy actually does when he's on.

Speaker 1 (01:28:54):
TAPE i, sure.

Speaker 4 (01:28:55):
Hope, SO i, MEAN i think you're starting to get
mounty evidence that traits don't don't really win a lot
of times here that, yeah you gotta have. TRY i,
mean just because you had sixteen sacks At army per
se as a six to two hundred and forty five pound,
end doesn't MEAN i need to take you as a
six to two hundred and forty five pound. End there
was a kid a couple of years ago that everybody
fell in love with and he was a great story
and he had a bunch of sacks At, army but
it's like too, small. MAN i get what he's, done

(01:29:18):
but he's just too.

Speaker 5 (01:29:19):
Small that the flip side of that, is though.

Speaker 4 (01:29:22):
You know the pace kids from you, SEE i, mean
he was a, munster productive player in college and then
all of a, sudden every day, Ever i'm, like, yeah
but he doesn't have any measurables.

Speaker 5 (01:29:32):
Whatsoever and in some cases that's.

Speaker 4 (01:29:33):
FINE i brought a blank on the linebacker From miami
many years, ago was a tackling, machine was like five foot.

Speaker 1 (01:29:39):
Eleven BUT i MEAN i should remember the.

Speaker 4 (01:29:41):
NAME i just. Don't and sometimes the measurables you outplay the,
measurables and those are the Guys i'd rather risk taking
on the guys that outplay the measurables and the guys
that have the measurables and don't play to that. Level
what makes you think they're gonna do at a level.
Higher it's a great.

Speaker 1 (01:29:56):
QUESTION i don't have the, answer but thank you as.

Speaker 6 (01:29:59):
All.

Speaker 4 (01:30:00):
Man, hey by the, way you see turn you see
to turn the ball over?

Speaker 1 (01:30:03):

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Rewarded for bravery that goes above and beyond the call of duty, the Medal of Honor is the United States’ top military decoration. The stories we tell are about the heroes who have distinguished themselves by acts of heroism and courage that have saved lives. From Judith Resnik, the second woman in space, to Daniel Daly, one of only 19 people to have received the Medal of Honor twice, these are stories about those who have done the improbable and unexpected, who have sacrificed something in the name of something much bigger than themselves. Every Wednesday on Medal of Honor, uncover what their experiences tell us about the nature of sacrifice, why people put their lives in danger for others, and what happens after you’ve become a hero. Special thanks to series creator Dan McGinn, to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Adam Plumpton. Medal of Honor begins on May 28.
