Day long coverage of Bengals training Camp. Tony and I
here till noon since he three to sixty takes over
at twelve o'clock, I'm back in studio at three. Tony
has hourly training camp reports with me at three forty five,
four forty five, and five forty five. And this is
the first practice, Tony that we don't have fans here.
Other yeah, there are some people in the VIP ten,
but this is the first practice we've been to that
(01:23):
doesn't have that isn't open to the public, and so
it's a chance for us to paint a picture maybe
for folks who ordinarily would try to get down here.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Yeah, Weather's cooperating perfectly so far.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
Yes, it is.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Uh, it's starting to feel a little bit different because
you know what this week is. You travel tomorrow, you
play a preseason game on Thursday.
Speaker 4 (01:45):
Yep. Uh, we're getting there.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
But from a practice standpoint, I think it'll be interesting
how today's handled. From a rep standpoint, Te Higgins is
out here with the wide receivers who are right in
front of us. He's yet to put on his shoulder pads.
Jamar Chase is yet to do anything with the wide receivers.
He's over there laying down using a band to stretch.
So I would wonder how much you see T Higgins
(02:11):
or Jamar Chase or guys like that today, knowing that
you're probably going to at least get them some reps
on Thursday night.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
I think that's gonna be interesting to watch.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
I would assume we see a lot of Joe Burrow
still because he's talked a lot about getting that feel
and winning those eleven on eleven reps in team settings.
But more than anything, we're on the heels now of
what happened Sunday, which was the unscripted right set where
all of a sudden, Bengals offense looked like the Bengals
(02:39):
offense we thought it would be. Joe Burrow was twenty
or twenty one to twenty four. They scored on I
think three of the four drives, and it's the first
time you thought, okay, they won. Unscripted, they don't have
the answers to the test, they don't have the cheat sheet.
The defense didn't look as good. So we've seen the
defense get beat a couple of days. We've also seen
them respond in a very nice way. I think that's
(03:02):
going to be interesting to see today.
Speaker 5 (03:03):
Yeah, I kind of wonder.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
You know, Jamar Chase at the outset of training camp,
actually during mini camp, you know, stated his his lack
of desire for playing in the preseason while understanding why
they're going to play him in the preseason, and I
wonder if the tradeoff for him and maybe some others
is okay that last practice before the preseason game before
we go to Philadelphia. You don't have to really do anything,
(03:25):
but we need you on the field in some capacity.
On Thursday night Bengals and Eagles on ESPN fifteen thirty
Thursday evening with kickoff at seven thirty. Let's talk about
that game a little bit from this perspective, so we
know that more guys who matter are going to play
in these preseason games. Typically, in the preseason, teams are
not game planning right, They're not installing for the specific opponent.
(03:48):
They're working on stuff. And what you see offenses do is,
as we always say, kind of vanilla. Yeah, if you're
trying to get off to a faster start and you're
using the guys who matter in preseason games, are you
showing a little bit more of your offenses and defenses
as opposed to what you might normally do in the preseason.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
Offensively, I don't think you have to. You're good enough
offensively that you should be able against the team's backups
to run your basic stuff and still succeed I mean,
you're putting your guys in a pretty good spot if
it's Jamar Chase t Higgins, and I don't think you're
asking a lot.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
If you're Zach Taylor.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
I would assume if you go Thursday night and go
down the field and score, you get the guys out
and you move on and they get to the plan
in game two. What I think is interesting though the defense.
You've got Demetrius Knight, You've got Shamar Stewart, who are
two rookies you're gonna rely on probably a lot. Demetrius
Knight is in the first depth chart starting for this team,
(04:42):
or in Burks is a new piece, but so many
of the players on the defense are younger and are
looking to I guess, kind of recapture parts of their
career or show that they can be an NFL player,
Whereas last year or the year before they didn't show that.
I mean, every corner was better at one point last year.
So I would imagine we see more of the starters
(05:06):
on the defensive side of the ball than offense, because
quite frankly, there needs to be more answers now. Golden
talks Sunday about communication and while it's been good. They
need to continue to work on that. They need to
work on. We hit on this all the time. They
don't tackle here in practice, so the starters need to
work on some live tackling as well. I think those
things need to happen. I think you need to see
(05:26):
more reps in the secondary. I also think offensive line
is an interesting position. You know, Dylan Fairchild looks to
be being relied on to be a starter. We've had
questions with Orlando Brown, Lucas Patrick was listed over Cody
Ford in the first depth chart. Amarus Mims has the
hand issue going on. There's not a lot of depth
built into the offensive line. So I'd like to see
(05:48):
more reps for the O line, and I'd like to
see more reps for the defense.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
As a whole.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yeah, I think if we are to talk about what
we're going to focus on a little bit more than
the other stuff on Thursday. For all the talk of
the offense and Burrow and getting off to a faster start,
the defensive side of the ball has more to prove
and has been a very good story here throughout camp.
But you talked about how that kind of got it
worked in the nonscripted stuff, on Sunday. We'll see what
(06:14):
they do on on Thursday night against Philadelphia. Let's talk
a little bit about T Higgins and this is something
that I meant to bring up to you yesterday, and
there's just so much other stuff to talk about. Jeremy
Fowllo wrote a piece about the Bengals camp he showed
up here last week, and one of the nuggets in
it included T higgins thoughts on being moved around offensively.
Speaker 5 (06:33):
Now, this has been a theme.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Of recent training camp, certainly last year, as it relates
to Jamar Chase using him as a chess piece, lining
him up in different places, putting him in the slot,
putting him in the backfield, motioning him a little bit more,
and we saw a lot of that last year. T
Higgins has talked about, well, actually this year, I'm being
used a little bit differently, and I like the idea
of lining up in the slot where maybe I'm gonna
(06:55):
have an advantage.
Speaker 5 (06:56):
Over a smaller dB.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Boy, if you could start to incorporate that, Yeah, with
a guy like T Higgins.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Oh boy, I mean that goes into first order business.
He's got to stay healthy, sure, but if I'm looking
to give the answers to the test to Joe Burrow
more often. Then that's where I start, because we can
get into the matchups. But very simply put, you know,
a man's zone indicator is a lot easier to spot
(07:22):
if T Higgins lines up in the slot. You know,
does that corner come in with him or is that
a nickel or a dime corner that is now guarding
T Higgins. That gives you a man's ozone indicator. I've
always thought they could maybe incorporate a little more motion
with T Higgins because for all so much of his
career he's been great at it. Yeah, it's just kind
of line up and that's where he's gonna be. Yeah,
he's either gonna be to the boundary or he's gonna
(07:43):
be to the field. He's not gonna move much. He's
not gonna shift. He's not going to line up in
that slot. But he mentioned it, He mentioned running routes
he's never had to run before. Yeah, and getting that on.
Speaker 5 (07:55):
It, and it seemed like he talked about it with enthusiasts.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
Right, Yes, But but I think just the overall thought
of if you move him to the slot at his size,
and we're able to see him every day, how much
bigger he is than what the normal wide receiver is.
All of a sudden, now you're talking about more conducive
matchups for Joe Burrow to attack.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
Because again, it's still a chess game.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
If I'm a defensive coordinator and now Tea's in the
slot and Jamar's out wide, am I bringing that extra
defender over top of Jamar? Because if so, now T's
got more freedom over the middle of value. So you
add that you had Jamar, Chase, no A Fan, Mika Sicki,
the twelve personnel that we talked about. There's one thing
(08:37):
that needs to happen for all this to be successful,
and that's the offensive line.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
So you know, if the O line can hold up,
if teams can't just drop seven and still provide pressure,
I don't know how you defend them on a consistent basis.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Let's talk about a term you just used twelve personnel,
which is two tight ends on the field.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
Or nerding out. Now the Bengals, So.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
The Bengals signed Noah Fan and one of the obvious
reasons is that when they employed twelve personnel last year,
they're very successful and they did that with eric Al
who they drafted out of Iowa last year, local product,
and before he got hurt, man he looked the part
and you saw the Bengals shift to using more twelve personnel.
(09:21):
I think they had the ninth most amount of twelve
personnel snaps in the NFL last year, But it's becoming
a larger league wide trend to have two tight ends
on the field.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Why is that for defensive pressure situations? And it makes
the quarterbacks job a little bit easier. Like I thought
last year, the eric All injury for him to go
down and then they still finished as a top ten
team in usage rate of twelve personnel tells you all
you need to know.
Speaker 5 (09:50):
Kind of making it up as they went along.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
Yeah, yeah, right, because as you mentioned, they used multiple
draft picks on those guys. They wanted to add more
tight end depth. So at the base level, twelve personnel
is telling me that it's two wide receivers, two tight
ends and a running back. But immediately it puts pressure
when a team goes twelve on what the defensive coordinator
is going to do.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Because he's got two options.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
He can match the size with their bigger bodies, So
bring another linebacker on the field, and if that happens,
I like Eric Hall or Mike YASICKI one on one
against linebackers. The other option is to stay small, keeping
a dime or keeping a nickel corner. And while Eric
Hall and Noah Fan aren't known as great blockers, I
like them being able to block a corner. So if
(10:35):
I'm a defensive coordinator, do I match big or do
I go more coverage and have a smaller guy out there?
So again, you could argue that you could win against
a smaller guy too, just based on your body size
and height. It also adds an extra running lane. If
you think if tight end's attached to the offensive line, now,
all of a sudden, there's more gaps for the running game,
there's more room for cutbacks. It opens up play action
(10:57):
pass for the quarterback. It gives you the ability to
go max protect, keep eight blockers in, and send Jamar
Chase and t Higgins out on a route by themselves.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
It just gives Joe Burrow so many more options.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
And with the personnel that they have, which pass catcher
on this roster?
Speaker 4 (11:14):
Don't you like in a one on one setting?
Speaker 5 (11:17):
Right?
Speaker 4 (11:18):
I like Mi Kaseiki one on one. I like no
offense one on one.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
I like Chase Brown one on one, and I surely
like T Higgins and Jamar Chase one on one. So
if I'm a decordinator, I don't know which way you
go with that. It puts them in a dilemma of
how they're going to match the twelve personnel, which should
bode really, really well for this offense.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
I think the only way to beat this offense is
to figure out ways we were talking about this before
the show, to figure out ways to get the Joe.
Speaker 5 (11:47):
Burrow with four guys.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
Now.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Unfortunately, right now, if I'm any defensive coordinator preparing to
play the Cincinnati Bengals, at least in the first I
don't know, five six weeks of the season, that's what
I'm banking on. And that's why when the game actually matter,
I am interested to see. Does this offensive line make
the Bengals take the Bengals from a team that is
really hard to prepare for to one that is almost
(12:11):
impossible to defend.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
Yeah, that's the biggest question remaining, and to me, it's
now the biggest question of training camp because of what
we heard from ma Marius Mims. Because of what we've
seen from Fairchild and Lucas Patrick and Cody Forden Orlando
Brown Junior. To a point, sure, but I mean this
isn't it's not rocket science. If I'm a decordinator, I'm
eliminating the big play possibility that usually happens when you
(12:36):
go one high safety.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
I'm keeping two high safeties back.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
At times, I'm gonna put a linebacker down the middle
and go Tampa to I'm not going to allow big
plays against me, momentum plays. I will allow movement in
between the twenties, and I'll try to bow up in
the red zone. Much like we talked about what Al
Golden can specialize in. With this defense, I'm gonna allow
movement inside or outside of the twenties, and when you
get down there, strength the field and try to hold
(13:00):
this Bengals team to a field going.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
While you're at it.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
If on first and ten you can stop a run
with four man rushing, and then you can put pressure
on a third and long, then you get off the field.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
So that's the only way.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
There's no way consistently that another team can slow down
the Bengals if they're rushing five guys or sixty they're
just not numbers in the back end.
Speaker 4 (13:21):
Well, you're gonna get towards.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
And plus, you know, knowing how good Joe is pre snap,
knowing how good he's been under duress, I mean, like,
all right, you know, we talked about the offensive line
has to be better because we don't want Joe on
the run and we don't want him hit as much
because the more he's on the run and the more
he's hit, the higher the probability of him suffering an injury.
And all that's very, very true. But like when he's
(13:44):
under pressure, he's awesome. Yeah, right, and pre snap he
can diagnose anything the other team's defense is gonna do.
And so I mean, yeah, I would tell an opposing
defensive coordinator go ahead and try to confuse him. Yeah,
could go ahead and try to do some exotic stuff,
go ahead and do something beyond drop seven, rush four.
And Joe's gonna figure out a way to beacha as
(14:05):
long as you know he can remain reasonably clean.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
And he's pretty much at the point in his career
now where I don't think there are things he hasn't
seen right, right, like year one, two three, they're still
out there like WHOA, What was that? I don't think
he sees that anymore, especially if you talk about the
time where he's been unfortunately injured, the time he has
spent on the mental side and watching film and understanding
what defense are trying to do. He's far enough in
(14:31):
now that you're not gonna surprise him. So if I'm
a defense I know that, all right, here's bass, I'm
dropping seven.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
I'm gonna limit the windows.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
And I still think if I'm a defensive coordinator, I
still think that I can get to the quarterback by
rushing four or maybe at times even three.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
You know, today is a big practice because for the
first time here during training camp we have seen.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Joe Burrow's parents. I was thinking that have just shown up.
I was thinking that checking in.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
So this is obviously at a big day, big day
for Joe. As the Bengals get set to uh they're
going through their stretching exercises right now, final practice before
the first preseason game on Thursday, and then they come
quick man. You know, three three preseason games in sixteen days.
There's gonna be a lot of me for tend Football
to talk.
Speaker 5 (15:16):
About first preseason game this Thursday.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
What a beautiful thing. I'm already I'm already.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Dreading that moment when the third preseason game ends, Yes,
because as we've talked about, that's gonna feel like months before.
Speaker 4 (15:31):
We get to that first game.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
But yeah, I have mixed feelings about this because they
don't miss the fourth preseason game right at.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
The same time, move camp back another week. That last
preseason game is on the twenty third. Yeah, the first real.
Speaker 5 (15:43):
Game is on the seventh. That's fifteen days.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
I would move camp starting back one week. Then you
still have seven or eight days in between the last
preseason game and the start of the year. Because we've
mentioned like there is a dynamic of it that you
play in the preseason, but then you have almost a
month off anyway. Yeah, right, Like if you're not going
to play in the third preseason game, right, think of
the time from preseason game number two ends.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
Which is the eighteen to the start of the season.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
That's a that's a long time, and you're talking about
playing in the preseason, so you're ready to start the
season twenty.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
Days between that second preseason game and the and the
regular season over. Yeah, it's but it's not like there's
not some stuff that can happen during those fifteen days.
From the standpoint of it, I think we're all going
to be watching, right, We're all going to be watching
to see you know, is there is there another version
of Noah fan out there cut loose by another team
that this team could use, especially on the offensive line.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
Hope.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
So I mean, as we're sitting here now, I would
say that needs to happen now, you know. Can we
see something today? Can we see something Thursday? Can we
see something going to the next Absolutely? But if if
the season we're starting next week, I would not be
comfortable so far with what we've seen from the old line.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
Fair. Yeah, for growth, new O line coach, new scheme.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
Sure, a lot of stuff going in younger players, I
get it, But as a what we've seen in person,
I would not be confident yet.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
And it's it's less than ideal when you see a
Marius Mems walking around in.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
A cast, Yeah, Phil, a cast? Correct?
Speaker 2 (17:14):
All right, it's seventeen minutes after ten o'clock. We're here

Speaker 4 (18:12):
Talk you hear that? You know what starts tonight?
Speaker 1 (18:14):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (18:15):
Yeah's television.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
The new favorite from my vetting standpoint, the Buffalo Bills.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
We're gonna talk about some AFC sleepers a little bit
later on. We'll have Zach Taylor's press conference coming up
after twelve o'clock today. We will tell you this. Zach
Taylor today said that Marius Mims is going to play
on Thursday. Yes, which is a very positive development. Yes,
will he'd be wearing the cast probably, he did say,
Mike KASICKI won't right, said I. If it were a
(18:41):
game week, Kasicki would be questionable. But you know, we
asked Austin over the break. He said, uh, that the
starters will play a quarter or so that's the plan
right now.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
So quarter ish, you know, I think obviously, I think
with the offense, it depends what happens on the first drive.
You know, think of how different it is from what
it was back in the day, Like that first preseason game,
starters would play a little bit and then they'd play
a little more, and that third one it was like
the dress rehearsal. They'd play a half and then they'd
have to come back out after halftime and play a
(19:13):
series just to get the feeling of coming out after
the break. And you know, now we're here celebrating a cornerish.
Speaker 5 (19:19):
No Dax Hill, no Cam Taylor Britt, no BJ Hill.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
As those players work their way back, this will surprise you.
No Trey Hendrickson either. Oh, by the way, we have
to talk about his placement on the depth chart.
Speaker 5 (19:29):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Pro Football Focus points out is as a third teamer.
Let's talk about a guy that we're gonna watch for
the first time as an NFL player on Thursday.
Speaker 5 (19:37):
And I give this guy a lot of credit.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
And you could take this with a grain of salt
because they're just training camp practices. But Shamar Stewart has
quickly shifted the conversation from his contract and the dispute
between his side and the Bengals and whatever was said
by his agent, whatever was said about his agent, and
he's made it about the impact he's had on the
football field pretty much starting on day one.
Speaker 3 (19:59):
Yeah, there are terms that are used around Shamar Stewart
of explosive, fast, twitch, powerful, strong, and you see that
on display more so right now because you can isolate
it in the individual drills, and Al Golden has talked about,
you know, kind of the the basic collegiate drills that
they run on a daily basis to try to get
(20:21):
back to basics for this defense.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
You can see all of that.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
Al Golden did mention he's got to get into football shape,
right which I think we understands fair considering he didn't
do much from a football standpoint in the offseason.
Speaker 5 (20:34):
But I am I'm surprised how well he.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
Has seemed to pick up on things as he's gone,
Like I expected him to be behind it, and we
don't know again what the defensive calls are. It's easy
if you you know, if you sit in a meeting
for an hour before practice and you say, okay, team
session number one, here's what we're gonna run. Do you
have any questions on these? It's easier to know what
you're doing in those as opposed to what that unscripted
(21:00):
session look like. So my biggest thing for the defense
of seeing these guys play on Thursday without the script
because that that's where they've struggled, or that's where they
struggled so far in training camp. But based on what
we've seen and based on what people are saying, it's
been a very good start to Shamar Stewart. Yeah, and
it doesn't feel like any of the drama off the
(21:22):
field has carried over now now that he's here. Yeah,
it feels like everyone's just like, all right, let's play football.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
You know, he said what he had to say during Minichamp,
had some comments that really didn't make any waves when
he signed his deal, and you know, yes, he does
need to get into football shade, but it didn't seem
like he was unprepared.
Speaker 3 (21:40):
And then once that got settled, then his agent went
to Buffalo and said, okay, now let's start this with
James Cook.
Speaker 5 (21:45):
That's fine, whatever, take it elsewhere now, man.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
He's elsewhere and we can get back to business here.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
And it's like, it's worth pointing out because I feel
like we have talked so little about him from a
football perspective. He's a vital Yeah, Like this wasn't a
red shirt. This wasn't well, take Dax Hill and he
doesn't need to play. It wasn't take Miles Murphy in whatever,
we get a gravy. This is dude, we're taking you seventeenth. Overall,
our pass rush has to be substantially better. Like, how
(22:13):
does that happen if Shamar Stewart doesn't make an impact here?
Speaker 4 (22:15):
It can't. That's why he was drafted, you can't.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
I think we have talked so little, and most of
it is his doing. We have talked so little about
his potential impact on the team that when he was
on the field, it was kind of kind of eye opening, Right, Yeah,
here he is doing stuff.
Speaker 3 (22:32):
Yeah, and again it's not just that, but it was
the fact that he was drafted with questions, right, can
he translate to the NFL? Now he still has to
show the ability to get home. But we've talked about
how disrupting a quarterback can also lead to positive plays
as well, and then just sacking a quarterback. So I
think it's interesting with this defense because they use their
first two draft picks on players who are going to
(22:54):
play major roles. Yes, and as little as we've talked
about Shamar Stewart, we've not spent a ton of time
on Demitrius Knight as well, who, if you look at
the first depth chart, is listed as a starter for
Al Golden in this defense, and he was talked about
by Zach Taylor the other day as someone who almost
plays borderline too physical at times, and we got to
pull him back a little bit, but Zach alluded to
(23:16):
the fact of I'd rather have a player that is
on that side of things than on the timid side
of things. He's a rookie, he's physical, he's making his
presence known. There are going to be growing pains, as
there is with any rookie, but it's not just Tamar Stewart.
They're relying on two early defensive draft picks to be
major contributors to this defense this year.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
You mentioned earlier the depth chart. Trey Hendrickson listed third
string on the depth chart the first one of training camp.
Speaker 5 (23:44):
I mean to me, it's very very overt Trey Hendrickson.
I know he's not practicing. I get it.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
So you can argue, well, you can't be atop the
depth chart if you're not practicing. But the a, the
reigning NFL sack leader, the guy who was a finalist
for Defensive Player of the Year last year, listed as
third on the depth chart.
Speaker 5 (24:07):
Like that is that is? That is? That is a
middle finger?
Speaker 4 (24:11):
It is.
Speaker 5 (24:14):
Hendrickson.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
Like, I'm so interested as well, because they're just getting
out on the field here and walking through stuff. Like
I don't see Trey Hendrickson yet. No, I'm assuming he'll
be out here. I would assume he travels with the
team to Philadelphia. I think he would stay back.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
I think if you're here, you're you're taking part in
all teams activities, even if you're not playing activity.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
Yeah, what I'm what I'm most interested in is what
we talked about last week. It's easy to be the
great teammate when you show back up and things are
fresh and you're hopefully getting this new deal done. And
by all accounts, by what we've seen, he's been awesome.
He helps Jamar Stewart, he's helps some of these other players,
everything you want a guy to be. My question is,
(24:56):
if they get back from Philly and they're no closer
to a deal, and we get into we with our
final week of camp reports and they're no closer to
a deal, do we see the same Trey Hendrickson eager
to help the young guys, or do we start to
see a Trey Hendrickson that's more stand office.
Speaker 5 (25:10):
Or do we hear him correct?
Speaker 2 (25:11):
That's the thing, Like, I think Trey has kind of
made this up as he has gone along. Yeah, and
you know, at times you've wondered, like, all right, what
was he thinking there? Did his agent tell him to
go on this show or show up in practice and
stand in front of the media and talk like I
wonder if we're talking about this two weeks from now,
(25:31):
and I'm gonna guess we are. I'm gonna guess there
is a resolution to this, but it doesn't come until
you know, those final few days before the first game.
But if there's no movement and he starts to feel frustration,
You're right, do we see a different demeanor out there
with his teammates and does he decide to make news
by talking publicly?
Speaker 4 (25:49):
Again? So much of it is posturing as well.
Speaker 3 (25:51):
Sure, and look what it's done for us great, But
since he's come back, we have gone out of our
way to talk about how good of a teammate he's being. Sure,
that's what they want to do. Sure, right, that's what
his agent wants, That's what Trey wants. Because now he's like, well, look,
I've been here, I've been a model teammate, and we're
still no closer.
Speaker 4 (26:08):
You got to start working with me.
Speaker 3 (26:09):
Because I do think that if we are here next
week talking about the same thing, I would imagine that's
a more frustrated Trey Hendrickson, and I would imagine he
might not be as eager to lend his hand to
help these guys.
Speaker 5 (26:24):
And there's no there's no question about it.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
I mean, and I think you could say that and
it's got some validity because over the course that will last.
Whatever it's been seven months, Intermittently Trey has said something
either in a formal interview setting or.
Speaker 5 (26:42):
You know, in the scrum with the media members.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
What I'm kind of wondering, is this, so that second
game is an ESPN Monday night football broadcast. Yeah, it's
going to be in Washington. Is Trey going to be
there on the sideline? And does Lias Assaulters or whoever's
working the sideline for esp Wonderful wander over and say hey, Trey,
can I grab you for a second? And he decides
(27:05):
to get stuff off of his chest, which he's done before,
and then it's it's a thing. Then it's a thing again.
Right now, it's not a thing. Right now, it just
feels like, all right, Trey has been here, they got
a month.
Speaker 5 (27:17):
Eventually, the deal will get tough front of distraction.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
That night on the eighteenth, when it's preseason game number
two and there's some degree of national attention on the
Cincinnati Bengals, like, maybe Trey doesn't travel, Maybe Trey has
is nowhere to be seen.
Speaker 5 (27:31):
Maybe that's for the best. I have no idea, but.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
That's that's the day that I've got circle. Is that
the day that the Trey Hendrickson thing becomes a thing again.
Speaker 4 (27:41):
It has to be because you and I have talked about.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
It just almost feels as if things go the way
they are that we're having the conversation as this team
gets ready to go to Cleveland. It's Trey traveling. Is
he on a pitch count? Is he able to go
one hundred percent of the snaps? What's that going to
look like? Because regardless, and we could talk as we
look around some of the NFL stuff, you want to
talk about a team that's in turmoil. I thought they
(28:05):
had a lot of quarterbacks in camp already now tie
right now, they're they're adding another quarterback. They're in another
quarterback to Cleveland because they've they've had Kenny Pickett I
believe a hamstring injury, Dylan Gabriel has got a hamstring
injury from uh Shador Sanders is dealing with like shoulder soreness.
So they're adding another quarterback to camp. But you still
don't want to mess around. We've talked about that Cleveland
(28:28):
defense Week one against the O line. You don't want
to mess around and allow Cleveland to stick around that game.
Who's predicted to be the worst team in football from
the win lost standpoint right and push you to the
brink like we watched the Patriots do last year.
Speaker 5 (28:41):
Not really quick on Trey.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
You could argue the Bengals kind of made it more
of a thing by putting him his third on the
depth chart. Yes right, yes, right, Because don't you want
to hear from Trey Hendrickson about his thoughts on being
third on the depth chart?
Speaker 5 (28:56):
Right again?
Speaker 4 (28:57):
Like I get it, third team or Trey Hendrickson.
Speaker 5 (28:59):
I mean, did.
Speaker 2 (28:59):
They correct me if I'm wrong? I don't think they
did that with Jamar Chase last year.
Speaker 4 (29:04):
I don't believe so.
Speaker 5 (29:06):
I don't think on their depth chart.
Speaker 4 (29:07):
I still think he was like number one.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
I don't think they took Jamar Chase, who, like Trey Hendrickson,
not practicing but here so he doesn't get fined. I
don't think they took Jamar and put him his third
on the depth chart. I could be dead wrong about that,
but I feel like that's something I would remember. They've
done it with Trey. Yeah, and so like, you know,
did the Bengals need to do that? Because now you
know I didn't notice this until Mike Florio wrote a
(29:30):
Pro Football Talk dot com, but that is you know,
you might you might be nodding along you might think
it's funny that is Zach Taylor and the coaching staff
and maybe the front office. Yeah, going double barrel, middle
finger track this. It is twenty seven away from eleven o'clock.
The sun is peaking out, still mostly overcast out here.
Speaker 5 (29:51):
We've got wide receivers. T Higgins is directly in front
of us.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
We're still in the individual portion of practice. They sht
third team stuff together. Nope, des Ritter making his way
over toward the end zone. There's a Joe Burrow, Joe
with his folks in attendance.
Speaker 4 (30:08):
Today.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
We have the final training camp practice before the game
on Thursday, and I don't forget. We've got the Bengals
and Eagles on ESPN fifteen thirty with kickoff at seven thirty.
Let's since you mentioned the Browns, let's talk a little
bit about the AFCM, maybe identify some sleepers when we
come back on The Adorn Window, Tony and Moe Training
Camp Show on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 6 (30:28):
Station, ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (30:31):
Twenty's get away from eleven o'clock.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
It's the Ae Dorn Window, Tony in Mo Training Camp
Show on ESPN fifteen thirty. We are at Bengals training camp.
Today's practice is not open to the public. I know
they have a couple this weekend, one for season ticket holders,
the other four club seat members. There is a way
to watch practice even though it's not open to the public.
(30:53):
You could stand there on the clay Wade Bailey Bridge
and watch practice. I'm a little surprised there's only one
fan up there there.
Speaker 5 (31:04):
Looks like a woman.
Speaker 4 (31:05):
You think that jogger's going to stop by.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
I don't think she has any interest in what's going
on today. I've never I've never posted up on the bridge.
I've been up there once for a training camp.
Speaker 5 (31:16):
How's the view up there?
Speaker 4 (31:16):
You could see everything.
Speaker 3 (31:18):
It's hard to do a training camp hit because there
are semis actively going by. I understand that makes it
a little bit tougher.
Speaker 5 (31:26):
I've well.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
I congratulations to the hardy soul who is up there
watching press.
Speaker 5 (31:32):
That's hard.
Speaker 3 (31:32):
It's called die hards. That's hardcore. That's hardcore, you know.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
I mean there's there are people who like they devour
every piece of Bengal content possible, and then there are
folks who are taking time out of their day to
make sure they can watch a practice that is not open.
Speaker 4 (31:48):
To the public.
Speaker 5 (31:50):
Very very good.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
It really makes you think too about and I've talked
about this before. We make so much and coaches are
paranoid in a sense at times of closing practices and
what periods of practice you can video and not video.
There is a an orange rope that wraps around training
camp where the media can stand in front of. There
(32:11):
are bleachers here, there is the bridge. If you really
wanted to come and take video, if you're another team,
you would be able to do that, oh, without question. Yes,
Like coaches are very like they're in that mold of
they don't want to show anything.
Speaker 5 (32:26):
That's a public space.
Speaker 4 (32:27):
Yes, so it's it's in part like there are.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
It was a couple of years ago a big fight
broke out at training camp and they didn't want anyone
in the media to tweet it out. But then like
a hundred people that were sitting five feet behind us
tweeted it out because they were in the bleachers. So
it is it's not the easiest spot if you're trying
to hide things. Well, you know, maybe that's what's going
on the bridge. Maybe that's an impost on the bridge.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
Would I would like to think that in the highly
sophisticated world of professional football, that if a team loses
a tough game that in the immediate aftermath, the story
isn't you know?
Speaker 5 (33:04):
We thought we had this team game plan for it properly.
Speaker 2 (33:07):
However, somebody was up on the bridge watching us practice
back in August yep, and that's why we weren't able
to execute our offense successfully.
Speaker 5 (33:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (33:17):
Well, there's a lot going on now.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
This is mister Burrow has come over to say how
to Kay Adams, who's in attendance today?
Speaker 4 (33:24):
A lot going on to practice.
Speaker 5 (33:25):
I would like the opportunity to say hi to Kay Adams,
do you know?
Speaker 3 (33:29):
And I'm just thinking Kay Adams had announced she was
coming to practice today. If I wanted to go out
of my way to maybe impress k Adams, and let's
say I was Mike Petralia, I would have doubled down
on the banana shirt because as soon as she came in,
she'd have been like, that's the banana guy.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
I want to go meet him. I'll be take a
picture with him.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
If I were Kay Adams, and I kind of wish
I was. But if I were Kay Adams, you know,
it's like going to Disney World. You want to meet
Mickey Mouse, right, Like I want to go to Bengals
practice and I want to meet the guy with the
you know, the stuff on. But I think that's a
missed by track. I don't want to meet Mickey Mouse
with like his hat off right like behind it.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
No, Yeah, let's go Monday through Monday through Thursday.
Speaker 4 (34:08):
I'm Mickey, but it's my off day today, so here
I am.
Speaker 5 (34:12):
Maybe Trags is not interested in impressing Kay Adams. Okay,
maybe all right. Kay Adams has her own makeup.
Speaker 3 (34:20):
Guy, though I would say an entourage. I mean there
are there are folks that come in and out of
practice at different times. There is no one that travels
with an entourage like she's got. She's got six people
in her party.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
She's got a makeup bag the size of my granddad's
tackle box. Look at that thing, man, that makes you
could hide three bowling balls in that thing.
Speaker 5 (34:42):
That's unbelievable. Kay Adams is.
Speaker 4 (34:44):
Here, Yes, that's big.
Speaker 3 (34:46):
Watching Joe Burrow get ready to take a snap play
action pass and uh look at this. Find t Higgins
nearly in our lap. This doesn't look like full speed practice. No,
most definitely does not this. Uh he ran that out
about seventy percent. This looks currently like a team who's
got one foot on the practice field and one foot
(35:06):
getting ready to board a plane.
Speaker 5 (35:07):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (35:09):
Yeah, they they kind of look like a team that
really can't wait to see guys in other colored uniforms.
Speaker 5 (35:15):
It is.
Speaker 3 (35:16):
We talked about this a little bit yesterday. You do
lose if you're the Bengals. What I thought was valuable
in the last couple of years of those joint practices.
Speaker 5 (35:24):
Do you find value in them?
Speaker 4 (35:27):
I do, Yeah, because you're going against different guys.
Speaker 2 (35:29):
You find value in them, even if you're gonna play
your guys who matter in the No.
Speaker 3 (35:34):
No, That's why I think it's different because in the
previous years they're playing No. One in the preseason. So
it's like, when are they gonna go against anybody else?
When are they gonna go unscripted? The last couple of years,
the joint practices are essentially preseason games for ones verse ones. Yeah,
Like I got more out of watching a team come
in here in practice two days than I did in
(35:55):
the game. Right, Like when the Rams came in, they
got good work in Albeit Aaron Donald on the but
for two days the Bengals ones and the Rams ones
went against each other in team settings. That's a heck
of a lot more that was getting done on.
Speaker 2 (36:08):
The field, so as I remember it. Last year, the Bengals,
they had two joint practices. One was in Chicago before
they played the Bears, and if you recall whether it
was awful, the weather was bad and Joe Burrow had
a bad day against the Bears, and we were told,
don't worry about it. Yeah, And then how did the
Bengals start the season, So that practice you might, I do,
are you told us something about how the season was
gonna I'm.
Speaker 3 (36:26):
A fan of joint practices. If your guys aren't going
to be playing in the preseason now.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
This year, I get it.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
You're gonna play guys in the preseason, you don't need
those practice reps. But man, in a controlled setting, I
get to go against another team's number ones.
Speaker 4 (36:41):
I would take that at any point. Uh.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
You mentioned this earlier that with most sports books, the
odds to win the AFC has shifted a little bit.
The odds on favorite has for the entire offseason been
the Baltimore Ravens.
Speaker 5 (36:55):
There's really been a big.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
Three of Baltimore, Buffalo, and Kansas City. There's been a
change the top though. Right now the odds on favorite
at most books is Buffalo. Yeah, gonna be featured on
hard knocks. That obviously can change based on, you know,
where the money goes other factors. There's a big three
in the AFC. We obviously talk extensively about the Bengals.
(37:16):
I think it is fair to not incorporate them in
that group at the top of the AFC until we
see market improvement from the defense and the team get
off to a faster start. I don't know though, that
you would consider a team quarterbacked by Joe Burrow to
be a sleeper right our teams, however, that I think
in the AFC you could categorize as sleepers. Who's on
(37:37):
that list for you?
Speaker 5 (37:39):
To me?
Speaker 3 (37:39):
The top team on that list is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Okay,
I like what they got out of Brian Thomas. And
if you want to talk about depth charts, Travis Hunter
was listed as number one at wide receiver. He's listed
as a number two corner for what that's worth. But
as much as we talk about, you know, teams and players,
(38:01):
what an interesting year this is for Trevor Lawrence, who's.
Speaker 4 (38:04):
Kind of the forgotten guy.
Speaker 3 (38:06):
The hype that was coming out of college for Trevor
Lawrence and what he's done to this point.
Speaker 5 (38:10):
And off having surgery.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
Yeah, you bring in a new coach who, as weird
as he is with the whole Duval thing, he has
had some success from an offensive coordinator standpoint, getting the
most out of the players.
Speaker 4 (38:22):
I like the makeup of them.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
They're still They've got young, talented players on the defensive
side of the ball, and quite frankly, Tennessee's not there yet.
Their ownership told you that, and they couldn't answer a
question about winning the Super Bowl. The Indianapolis Colts have
no idea if they're gonna have Anthony Richardson or Daniel
Jones be their quarterback. And I think the Texans have
taken a huge step back. So just on a division
alone in the AFC South, I think Jacksonville has a
(38:45):
lot of merit. That's an early game for the Bengals,
by the way, that that should be a little bit
of a test outside of them. I think New England's
had a really good off season. At the top of
my list, I think they've had a really good off
season at the top of my list. I don't know
if I'm ready for them yet. I don't think Pittsburgh's
really a sleeper because they made the playoffs last year
and outside of the AFC West. You made the point
(39:07):
early on in training camp the value in Kansas City
not making the playoffs. Yeah, Denver's gonna be good. Can
bo Knicks take that next leap? And I think the Chargers.
You want to talk about quarterbacks that need to kind
of show up, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Herbert, it's time for
him as well. I think from a Charger standpoint, I
don't think they're a sleeper, but I think they can
(39:28):
be really good based on the system that they run. Yeah, Chargers,
Jacksonville Jaguars, and I think the Patriots are gonna surprise him.
Speaker 2 (39:35):
So I had the Patriots at the top of my list,
and they would if they double their win total. That's
eight wins, which is not gonna be good enough to
get him in the postseason. But they've got a talented quarterback,
they just hired a terrific head coach, and they had
a very good offseason in terms of player acquisition. The
Chargers everybody makes it about Herbert. I don't have him
(39:56):
on my list because I don't trust him.
Speaker 5 (39:57):
On defense.
Speaker 2 (39:58):
They were a wreck on defense five or six games
in the season last year. Heck, we saw it against
the Bengals for what that's worth. And then many of
their good defensive players left. Joey Bosa is no longer there.
They're kind of repairing that defense top to bottom. At
the same time, you keep waiting for the Chargers to
take that step. They do have a great coach, they
do have a very talented quarterback. I'm just not sure
(40:19):
either are good enough to overcome what they don't have
on the defensive side. I think the Texans are fascinating
from this standpoint. Number One, last year they were the
team that got the most buzz. Number two, they did
win a playoff game last year. They still have CJ. Stroud.
They have a couple of broken down running backs right now.
That's no knock on Joe Mixon personally. He's just older
and he's injured right now. My money for offensive Rookie
(40:41):
of the Year is the thirty fourth pick in the draft,
and that's Jayden Higgins, And if he turns out to
be as good as a lot of people think. And
they still have Nico Collins, and they still have Christian Kirk,
and you still have CJ. Stroud, and you play in
a division that is not awesome, Texans can be pretty
damn dangerous. I have them on my list of sleepers.
Speaker 5 (41:04):
I also do have.
Speaker 3 (41:05):
Pittsburgh the no team, though the Texans no team took
away more from their quarterback up front than they did.
Speaker 5 (41:10):
No question.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
Maybe, And again there's and you couldn't find a higher
stock to buy last year.
Speaker 5 (41:16):
No doubt.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
And you talk about a team that like nobody is
talking about now versus a year ago.
Speaker 5 (41:21):
The difference is stark.
Speaker 2 (41:23):
I do have Pittsburgh as a sleeper because, like for me,
what they're doing on offense, what they're doing with their
team is we want a passable offense and an elite defense. Right,
what if they do finally fix their offensive line, and
what if Aaron Rodgers outperforms the most optimistic expectations and
he's Aaron Rodgers again, which I'm guessing is not going
(41:44):
to be the case, but if it is, sure, then
I have an elite quarterback, an elite defense, and a coach,
by the way, who's never had a losing season.
Speaker 4 (41:53):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (41:54):
Offensive Rookie of the Year for me. I'm fascinated by
a mecha at Buka. Yeah, because I think the landing
spot was perfect, like Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, him and Tampa. Yeah,
young young running corps Baker Mayfield. I like what Tampa
has done. Yeah, I like the coaching staff and the
scheme that they have down there. But yeah, I think
there's a sleeper value there. I think Ashton Genty right
(42:18):
now is the odds on favorite to win Offensive Rookie
of the Year. And you think of him in a
Pete Carroll system with the Raiders. That's another team, good defense.
With the Raiders, they bring in Gino Smith, they get
Pete Carroll back, Ashton Genty. Brock Bowers had a really
good rookie year. I think there's I think there's a
lot of buzz, but you see it every year there's
a team that comes out of nowhere and you're like, huh,
(42:39):
I didn't see that coming.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
I also think there's an expectation by a lot of
folks who follow the league that, like the the Denver
Broncos are going to take this major lead from what
they were last year. Which was the last team in
with the talented quarterback and a great defense. Yeah, why
did neither of us talk about the Denver Broncos and
the Sleepers.
Speaker 4 (42:54):
I just I don't know if I'm there yet for Bnicks.
Speaker 3 (42:57):
Ye, great defense, But there's like there has to be
one of these, like year two quarterbacks that are jumping
in there that are gonna take a step back or two?
Speaker 4 (43:03):
Uh huh, Like, who's that gonna be?
Speaker 5 (43:05):
Right?
Speaker 3 (43:05):
Jane Daniels, Caleb Williams has looked by all accounts bad.
Speaker 2 (43:08):
I don't know how Jay Daniels may say a better
year or two Dirrect like is it step back?
Speaker 3 (43:13):
Might still be really really right? Is it Drake Bay?
Is it bow Knicks? Like? There are a lot of
quarterbacks grouped in there that had very positive starts to
their NFL careers, But the numbers and the odds say
that someone is going to take a step back bow Knicks.
Speaker 2 (43:27):
And I can be dead wrong about this. It wouldn't
be the first time. And I know we got to
get to a break here. Bow Knicks has this Andy
Dalton field where Andy Dalton's first year, you were really
happy with what he was because you know he replaced
Carson Palmer. They had the weird offseason with the lockout.
He was thrust into a tough situation. They win nine
games and you're like, Wow, really nice rookie season by
Andy Dalton. I'm not really sure he's gonna be great,
(43:50):
Like you said that after his first year, right, capable, good,
You can win a lot of games with him, but
he's just, you know, he's he's always going to be
a wrung below And I feel like with bo Nix,
you walked away from his rookie season acknowledging they could
surround him better with weapons, and you went, you know,
a nice rookie season. Yeah, good quarterback. I don't know
(44:10):
that his ceiling. I don't know that you view his
ceiling as any higher based on what he did year one,
even if you acknowledge year one was good.
Speaker 3 (44:16):
I think he's helped by Sean Payton. I think having
him as his quarterback. And they also they invested in
their wide receiver group. They paid Courtland Sutton. And there's
a guy we talked about TODs Brooks and we saw
him in person.
Speaker 4 (44:35):
R J.
Speaker 3 (44:35):
Harvey I thought was a great back for UCF. He's
now in that system as well. They've got JK. Dobbins
on the roster, Marvin Mims junior tight end as Evan Ingram,
So I think they've they've done better to surround him
with some talent. But I just that's one I need
to see more of before I sign off on the
Denver Broncos. But you know, you remember the Roethlisberger early
(44:58):
years where it was just don't mess it up and
get the ball to let the defense dominate. Sure, I
think Denver's defense can dominate as well. All right, no
question about to play the Bengal we are. We are
way late, seven away from eleven o'clock. We're going full
eleven on eleven. There's a pass over the middle to
Mi Kasiki that falls in complete. No offense on the field,
our first chance to get a look at it. I
(45:18):
think pressure caused that one. Joe Burrow could not finish
through the throw sales a little high. That's number one, all.
Speaker 2 (45:26):
Right, it's seven away from eleven o'clock. Eight Edorn Window,
Tony and Moe Training Camp show on ESPN fifteen thirty

Speaker 5 (45:34):

Joe Burrow just threw an incompletion right over the head
of a DJ Turner who, about two plays ago, was
absolutely abused by T Higgins. A really nice sideline catch
by number five. It's two minutes away from eleven o'clock.

for sponsoring our broadcast and for his support of the

midway over last practice before the Bengals play a game
(47:39):
against Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night. We have been watching
eleven on eleven right now. Jake Browning is playing quarterback.
How would you describe what we have watched over the
last ten to fifteen minutes time?
Speaker 3 (47:50):
One foot on the practice field and one foot in
on the airplane heading to Philly, and I think talking
to Jeremy Rowle in between breaks. Zach alluded to that
litle bit. Today today's practice will feel a little bit lighter.
It's gonna feel a little bit different.
Speaker 5 (48:03):
Uh huh.
Speaker 3 (48:04):
You're obviously wanting to just make sure you got everything
clean going into the preseason game number one, which I get,
but it's like the the little stuff goes with it,
like in and out of the huddle just seems lacks
of daisa Coal sluggish. Yeah, some of the routes or
the movement in between.
Speaker 4 (48:20):
Drills, Chris, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (48:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (48:22):
Which again, if if you're gonna have a lighter day,
I get it, but that's still in and out of
breaks is where you want to be a little bit
more crisp.
Speaker 2 (48:29):
I think why it stands out to me what you
just talked about. I think why it stands out to
me is the practices I had been here for with you,
the first five right in front of this, Oh boy,
I thought for a second, I thought for a second
we were gonna have like a WWE style crash into
our table.
Speaker 5 (48:45):
Isaiah Williams.
Speaker 4 (48:46):
I just wanted the ball to bounce. I've been waiting
for it.
Speaker 2 (48:48):
Really nice catch in the back of the end. But
I think what you just described stands out because the
first five or so practices that I was here for
the exact opposite was the case, right, some urgent, some urgency.
It was fast paced, It wasn't a sluggish This is
a little bit different.
Speaker 5 (49:06):
But Isaiya Williams t.
Speaker 3 (49:07):
I think to their credit and I think it goes
back to maybe years past or years prior. This was
more the speed that I was used to coming down
here and seeing for a majority of the practices. Right,
this today feels like the outlier, and I think you
can preface it with the understanding that they are getting
ready to get on a plane and go play their
first game, So that much I understand. But this this
(49:30):
feels more like what previous years have felt like more
often than not.
Speaker 2 (49:33):
Nate Brooks just basically undressed Jermaine Burton and took a
ball away from him in the back of the end zone.
Jermaine Burton's a guy that I can't wait for Thursday
night because you know he's gonna get an opportunity in
a game in public view to change the larger conversation
about him. He has had a good camp and we
have talked about he's starting to get out. He's starting
to get some national write ups too. Jeremy Faller mentioned
(49:54):
him when coming to camp and things like that. So
I think there are people taking notice and forgetting he's
a third round, third round pick, and you know, we
beat this into the ground last week when they took him.
There certainly was the possibility based on when they drafted him,
where he went to school, his athleticism, that he was
(50:14):
going to be the long term replacement for t Higgins.
We have watching Jake Browning run the offense right now.
We watched Joe Burrow obviously before and we saw some
incompletions that were caused by pressure. Yeah, we've talked a
lot about the offensive line. Obviously, defensive line is going
to have to be an area where this team has
to get better. But one of the themes of camp
so far has been Joe facing a lot of pressure
(50:36):
behind that offensive line.
Speaker 5 (50:37):
That no different when what we just saw.
Speaker 3 (50:39):
Yeah, it's been one of the themes for years of
coming down here for training camp reports. It's so difficult
because there's so much of you Mo that wants to say, man,
love what I'm seeing from Chris Jenkins, love what I'm
seeing from McKinley Jackson, Love what I'm seeing from Osai
and Miles Murphy and company. But I remember talking last
year about the defensive line dominating. Yeah, and the year
(51:00):
before yeah, and they were bad defenses. And so now
I'm watching this and yes, you're excited because of the
plays that the defense is making and that unit taking
a big step forward. There's also something when I watch
these clips back that I'm like, uh, that just wasn't
a great rep on the offensive line. And as we
kicked off the show today with with everything going on
(51:20):
around this team and the twelve personnel and how they
can incorporate personnel groupings to dictate what the defense does,
as we've mentioned, none of that matters and none of
that sticks if they can't protect against a four man rush.
Speaker 2 (51:37):
If you were not with us earlier, Zach Taylor did
talk this morning. We'll have that for you during SINCY
three to sixty coming up at twelve noon. One of
the things he did say, and this is a step
in the right direction, is a Marius Mims is expected
to play on Thursday against the Philadelphia Eagles. A very
brief break during practice, So can we spend just a
(52:00):
couple of minutes really quick acknowledging last night at Wrigley Field,
what a baseball.
Speaker 3 (52:04):
Game I'll tell you what. Cubs lose, Mets lose, Padres lose.
For career, we are That was the first.
Speaker 2 (52:13):
Game the Reds have played where it felt like playoff baseball.
Speaker 5 (52:17):
That crowd at Wrigley was awesome. They were into it.
Speaker 2 (52:21):
You're thinking, after a bullpen day on Sunday, Nicolodolo that
sits in the second inning with a blister, how are
they going to get through this? They get some great
relief work, they get some clutch hitting, a huge hit
by DJ Friedel to give him the lead. They get
a break with Dansby Swanson not knowing how to run
a first base, the great play by key Brian Hayes. Look, man,
(52:43):
I'm skeptical of the deal long term because he doesn't hit,
because he's acknowledging he has a chronic back problem.
Speaker 5 (52:48):
But the dude can pick it at third base.
Speaker 2 (52:50):
He made a great play last night, Ellie Taylor, Cruise
made a couple of really nice plays in the field.
They get a big double play in the eighth inning
and enormous win and what was really a great last night.
In part because final fifty games of the season, trade
deadline is upon us. The team is currently constructed is
gonna be you know what they are moving forward. That's
a really fun night last night, and then you've added
(53:12):
to it late last night San Diego loses, the Mets lose,
the Cubs lose because the Reds beat them.
Speaker 5 (53:18):
Yeah, it's fun night last night.
Speaker 3 (53:19):
It selfishly makes you want one of those games against
the Braves back, yes, and where they fell to. But look,
I equated it yesterday to do a boxing match or
a UFC match where you feel like, if the round
was ten more seconds, the guy who's gonna get knocked out,
And it has felt I think a handful of times
this year mo that the Reds are ready to be
knocked out, and somehow they get back to their corner,
(53:42):
their backs against the corner, they come out swinging again.
And that's what this team has done consistently. Now do
they have the consistent help to make a run.
Speaker 4 (53:51):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (53:53):
It looks like there's positive steps with Hunter Green and
him getting back. You wonder with the blisters what that's
gonna be for Nick Fladolo. But one thing you can't
say about this team is that they've given up or
rolled over. They they continue to fight, They scratch, they claw,
I know what the schedule is coming up. I know
that they're already facing a deficit. I know the Padres
(54:13):
did more at the deadline. I asked you before the show,
if you're watching one of those teams ahead right now, Cubs, Mets, Padres,
which of those teams is most susceptible to the Reds
catching them. I think it's New York. Yeah, I think
it's New York.
Speaker 2 (54:27):
I think, you know, San Diego, based on what they
did at the deadline, the team they already had, I
think it's I think it's New York.
Speaker 5 (54:34):
We've said it.
Speaker 2 (54:35):
Now for a few weeks that every time it has
felt like, you know, we did it. Last week, Boy
that loss felt like two right, or boy that that
was such a gut punch loss.
Speaker 5 (54:44):
How do you come back?
Speaker 2 (54:45):
Look, man, that game on Thursday was one of the
craziest games I've ever watched. Both teams score eight runs
in the eighth inning, they lose. I'm not blaming the
magic runner rule, but it remains just objectly stupid that
we don't play basse in the tenth inning. But they
lose that game, and I'm thinking you got to come
back twelve hours later knowing you've got to leave for Tennessee.
(55:10):
And they get a good, well pitched game Louisville. Bet
Will Benson hits a two run homer, and they did
what they have done all season long, which is they
they don't let the previous night linger. And to me,
Terry Francona, all season long, whether you have loved every
move he has made, whether you have taken issue with
(55:30):
some of the moves he has made, all season long,
he has preached, let's just win today's game. I'm not
worried about September. I'm not worried about next weekend. I'm
not worried about what happened yesterday. You know, it's the
message that I can grab on to most from him
this year has been that let's win today's game. Forget
last night, forget tomorrow, Forget everything surrounding the club, forget
(55:53):
trade rumors, forget whatever conjecture there is. And I think
that's applied to this club this year, and it has
all season long. They lose a tough one on Sunday,
there's every reason in the world to complain about, you know,
the bullpen day and how things went down in Bristol.
They showed up last night, they get some crap thrown
at him with the Nicolodolo blister, and they figure out
(56:14):
a way behind great bullpen work, very good defense, and
clutch hitting to win the ball game.
Speaker 3 (56:18):
It did make me feel bad though, for the team
who had so many fans just give up and drive
home on Saturday or.
Speaker 4 (56:25):
Sunday fans and people who cover the team.
Speaker 3 (56:27):
The fans that decided to go to Bristol gave up
and then gave up on them Sunday and weren't there
for him.
Speaker 5 (56:32):
Because they ran out of hot dog buns, which you
know shouldn't happen. That's not the rest.
Speaker 3 (56:36):
That's not to be mad about. That's not the team's fault.
And if I was one of those, you know, if
the Reds get to the postseason and they mentioned like
all the people they need to think, they need to
call out those folks yep who couldn't stick around in
Bristol for a few more hours to watch them play
base the people for there were people in my inner
circle that left the UC pit game in O nine
went to a bar.
Speaker 4 (56:56):
Not me, went to a bar.
Speaker 3 (56:58):
You probably had to stay if you could have had
the option, need to, probably went to a bar too.
Speaker 4 (57:01):
After watching that first half.
Speaker 5 (57:03):
Wanted boos in the booth.
Speaker 3 (57:04):
There was something that happened in Major League Baseball though
last night that made me so jealous because I know
what playoff baseball in Cincinnati feels like, and I know
what the environments feel like. The video going around last
night of Kyle Schwarber hitting the Grand Slam and they
took everything out with the crowd noise, and I'm just
sitting there thinking, like, man, that's a Monday night.
Speaker 4 (57:24):
Yeah, Philly is in the thick of.
Speaker 3 (57:29):
A run where they could be World Series contenders, And
I just think of the atmospheres and the environments and
things like that of like, man, we've seen in Cincinnati
when this team pushes, what the fans do to show up.
I wish we could get that on a consistent level,
from wins and competing and putting a roster out there
to compete for a championship. Because watching those scenes in
(57:52):
Philly last night, there is nothing better than witnessing that.
Speaker 2 (57:56):
Even Chicago last night, Yes, like that crowd was awesome. Yeah,
that crowd was ready to explode. Early August felt like
the Cubs had tied the ball game, like it John Sadak,
the Reds TV broadcaster, takes some criticism at times for
being a little bit too over the top. I'll always
take a broadcaster who has enthusiasm, yeah, but there are
(58:20):
times where that enthusiasm isn't necessarily matched by the environment
that he's calling a game in.
Speaker 5 (58:25):
Last night, the two meshed yep.
Speaker 2 (58:27):
I mean when when he and Jeff Brantley were walking
us through the play where Dansby Swanson doesn't step on
first base, Like the anticipation of the crowd, the bigness
of the game, the importance of the moment like that.
That was just I was watching it with my wife
last night and I'm like this, this this is the
first one this season that feels like Pennant Race baseball.
Speaker 5 (58:46):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (58:47):
There was the moment last night where Rogers comes into
the game and Brantley Ellie swing. He said, you know
he's not got those strike I'm like, that is such great, yes, yes,
but also you know that what are you swinging at
the ball and the dirt.
Speaker 2 (59:01):
For exactly big win for the Reds last night. Hopefully
they can make it two in a row tonight at
eight five. It's fourteen minutes after eleven o'clock a E.
Dorn Window, Tony and Mo Football Show. What are we
watching right now?
Speaker 5 (59:13):
Tone?
Speaker 4 (59:13):
Punt team? Punt team.
Speaker 3 (59:15):
They got the yellow caps on, which means that's a
scout punt, you know, when the kicker is not even
kicking it, they're putting it through a jugs machine. What
kind of day we have here at at the practice
fields across from pay Corse Stadium.
Speaker 2 (59:26):
Well, you know, one of the battles to unfold during
the preseason tone is that big long snapper battle.
Speaker 3 (59:31):
Looks like Cal has the early lead. He was listed
as number one on the early depth chart. So Cal
number one.
Speaker 4 (59:39):
What's his name?
Speaker 3 (59:39):
William Wallace, William Wagner, number two, For what it's worth,
Trey Hendrickson listed as number three as well.
Speaker 4 (59:48):
Yeah, as the long snapper.
Speaker 5 (59:50):
Battle, that's how he's gonna have to make the team.
Speaker 2 (59:53):
We've got Isaiah Williams, Jermaine Burton and Charlie Jones back deep.
Speaker 5 (59:58):
Although Charlie is not wearing his helmet, so you know
who knows.
Speaker 3 (01:00:00):
Jermaine Burton a little bit different without that beach towel,
He's got faster, He's got a regular towel on.
Speaker 5 (01:00:05):
Yeah, more of a regulation sized towel.
Speaker 3 (01:00:08):
Which what do you think about the under the pads
doesn't bother me? What do you think about that look?
Speaker 5 (01:00:15):
You know?
Speaker 2 (01:00:15):
To me, that's like when you go to a game
in like November, December, January.
Speaker 5 (01:00:19):
That's how people wear their jerseys over a hoodie.
Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
I like that look, okay, And if I get my
des Ritter jersey, which is contingent upon him earning a
paycheck from the Cincinnati Bengals this year, I'll be rocking
that look during the winter time.
Speaker 5 (01:00:32):
I like this.
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
It is sixteen minutes after eleven o'clock. We're at Bengals
training camp. Jermaine Burton cleanly fields a punt and runs
into three guys who have a yellow helmets on.
Speaker 4 (01:00:46):
That might be our best live report right there.
Speaker 2 (01:00:48):
Like ye, well, the last time we were broadcasting when
he fielded a puny muffed it. Yeah, so not an
insignificant development if you remember that.
Speaker 3 (01:00:57):
And if you obviously do, if you can look just
a here, they are getting the box of helmets to
sign out for the.
Speaker 5 (01:01:04):
Folks in the VIP the felt helmet, which means we.
Speaker 3 (01:01:07):
Are close to probably the conclusion of today's.
Speaker 4 (01:01:13):
I guess we'll call it a practice workout.
Speaker 5 (01:01:15):
This has felt more like a workout than a practice. Correct.
Speaker 2 (01:01:18):
It is seventeen minutes after eleven o'clock. We're broadcasting from
Bengals training Camp. Bengals Tony and I till noon. Austin's
gonna join us for since he three sixty. I'll hang
around for a little bit while Zach Taylor's press conference.
I'm on at three o'clock. Paul Danner Junior is gonna
join me in studio. Tony has hourly training camp reports
three forty five, four forty five, and five forty five.
Speaker 5 (01:01:40):
I will I.
Speaker 2 (01:01:41):
Will briefly do this and I'll pass this along to
you and Austin. I got this email just a few
minutes ago from a guy named George Pedon George Peden.
The subject is George Peden works for Connective three, and
what he's trying to do is see if we want
to get somebody else to talk about these betting odds
for MVP.
Speaker 5 (01:02:02):
His subject is Bengals.
Speaker 2 (01:02:04):
Jaden Daniels ranks number three on NFL MVP contender list. Now,
if you want me to say yes to that, yeah,
could you at least correctly identify I'll just.
Speaker 4 (01:02:13):
Say because I'm enticed by the betting. Yeah, I'm enticed
by the MVP.
Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
Could you at least correctly identify who the Bengals quarterback is?
Speaker 3 (01:02:20):
Because so do you think he means Commander's Jaydan Daniels
number three or Bengals Joe Burrow number.
Speaker 5 (01:02:25):
Three b E n G A l apostrophe?
Speaker 4 (01:02:30):
S Okay, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:02:31):
If I have a bigger pet pee then people who
put an apostrophe in Reds or Bengals. I see it
with the Reds all the time. Yeah, I want to
write this guy back and go take two.
Speaker 5 (01:02:42):
Try.
Speaker 2 (01:02:42):
I've made so many mistakes in my life. Yeah, I
don't know that I would do that. Bengals Jaden Daniels, Yeah,
come on.
Speaker 5 (01:02:49):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:02:49):
By the way, there's there's one of the Fox nineteens, Finus,
who left Bristol, who turned his back on the Reds
and didn't stay for Sunday's game.
Speaker 5 (01:02:57):
How do you cover a game? Yeah? If if you
aren't there for the game?
Speaker 4 (01:03:01):
Austin left, Danoman left, Raw left.
Speaker 5 (01:03:07):
Oh wow, prescient.
Speaker 2 (01:03:09):
That's the kind of local support we love from our
folks who cover the area clubs.
Speaker 5 (01:03:14):
All right, we have a step side.
Speaker 2 (01:03:15):
It's nineteen minutes after eleven o'clock, a Door and Window
Tony and Mo Football show from Bengals training camp on
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station.
Speaker 6 (01:03:23):
JUBS Black Hotline is built by Racing Claire Roofing your
Homes Trusted Problem Solver.
Speaker 5 (01:03:32):
I think we would call today Tony the most pleasant
day sure at Bengals training camp. Weather has been really nice.
Speaker 4 (01:03:41):
Doesn't for the players as well.
Speaker 2 (01:03:42):
Bengals offense going through its paces with no defense on
the field right now. It's kind of like playing the
Bengals last year. Michael Sicki catches along, No, that's Yoshi
Andrey Yoshibas sorry, catches a uhie was pretty ball. Yeah,
Andrey Yoshabas has had I think the the exact sort
of training camp you would expect.
Speaker 4 (01:04:01):
He's just solid.
Speaker 5 (01:04:02):
Yeah, yes, you know what he is.
Speaker 3 (01:04:04):
He's not gonna beach over the top munch. He's gonna
be great in the red zone. He's gonna be you
know in between. You know where he's gonna get. He's
gonna get to the sticks, he's gonna get to the
depth he needs to from a quarterback standpoint, like, you
just know where he's gonna be at and you can
rely on him.
Speaker 5 (01:04:20):
Jamar Chase catches the pass against.
Speaker 4 (01:04:22):
Now they're moving, now they're rolling.
Speaker 2 (01:04:24):
This is you want to get the Bengals offense cooking. Yep,
you take the defense off the field.
Speaker 3 (01:04:28):
I would imagine something like this is you're you're starting
to maybe look ahead to a little bit of a
script on Thursday night. You know, if like behind the
scenes Wednesday night or the night before a game, you're
sitting down with your position group, sometimes as a as
a whole offense. But Zach Taylor's gonna sit down with
Joe Burrow and Dan Pitcher at some point, and I'm
sure more in this game Jake Browning and Desmond Ritter
(01:04:50):
and say, Okay, give me the plays that you feel
the most comfortable with or that you want to to rep.
Speaker 4 (01:04:56):
In a live setting. And that's what you're gonna do.
Speaker 3 (01:04:59):
I mean, we we always talk about, you know, playing
off the script in a game. Ideally, the offense doesn't
have to play off a script right on Thursday night.
Ideally you script out twelve plays, You get those twelve
plays in, and you get off the field and you're
happy with where you're at. Zach Taylor earlier today said
the plan is for the starters to play a quarter ish,
(01:05:22):
which would suggest you could adjust things based on game conditions.
Speaker 4 (01:05:26):
Yeah, I have no problem with that.
Speaker 3 (01:05:27):
I again, if the offense goes six or seven plays
scores a touchdown, I'm good right now. If they were
to go three and out, and there's some struggle that
goes along with that, I can understand, you know, running
them back out there for another series. And there's also
something about like not to the extent of halftime, which
we often talk about, but run a series. Come to
(01:05:49):
the sideline and go through those logistics of let's look
at the the iPad, let's see what we need to do,
and then let's put action to it and go back
out there and capitalize or correct it. I get a
series or two.
Speaker 5 (01:06:01):
We were talking earlier.
Speaker 2 (01:06:03):
About the quarterback situation in Cleveland where they've had to
bring in Tyler Huntley as their fifth quarterback because every
other QB is dealt with some sort of injury. Would
you want to be or would you not want to
be Dylan Gabriel where you are basically the other quarterback
drafted in the West Draft.
Speaker 5 (01:06:21):
Well, I guess you were.
Speaker 3 (01:06:22):
I was, But Dylan want to Jimmy Classn or me,
what did it be with you?
Speaker 2 (01:06:29):
But Dylan Gabriel was taken earlier in the draft in
Shard or Sanders. Yeah right, which means they, you know,
theoretically like him more. But he's not the quarterback anybody
is going to be talking about. Whenever Dylan Gabriel is
taking snaps, it's a disappointment to folks from the outside
watching because they want to see Shador. At the same time,
you can prepare for the season and go through a
quarterback battle with not nearly as much attention being paid
(01:06:52):
to you as there would be if you were the
only quarterback taken.
Speaker 5 (01:06:56):
Would you want to be or not want to be
Dylan Gabriel?
Speaker 3 (01:06:58):
I mean, I think in the setting you're in, you
feel it. From a competitor standpoint, you're good with that, right.
I think from a media standpoint, it becomes a circus
because no matter what you do, it's going to be overlooked,
which makes your battle more uphill. But look, I viewed
as a situation where Flacco's probably got a year. You
(01:07:19):
can learn under him, make the most of it and
improve your game and then be the guy that takes over.
But I just I don't think that environment is good for.
Speaker 5 (01:07:29):
Any quarterback right now.
Speaker 3 (01:07:31):
I mean, what's the identity of their offense?
Speaker 4 (01:07:34):
What do they want to be offensively? Right?
Speaker 3 (01:07:36):
There's just not an answer to that. So I think
there is way too many questions. Yeah, if you went
into a setting and they do they have a good defense,
you're not asked to do a ton. Just don't don't
turn the ball over, don't create you know, massive plays
that are going to switch the script, and from there
you should be pretty confident where you're at.
Speaker 4 (01:07:57):
I just don't know who the Browns are.
Speaker 3 (01:07:59):
I don't know how much success you're gonna have lining
up in the backfield for them. Now, if you sit
behind Flak all year and you just take everything in
and learn, I think there could be some value to that.
Speaker 2 (01:08:08):
But I mean, are you gonna play Joe Flacco when
you have two quarterbacks you drafted?
Speaker 5 (01:08:13):
Like, I get it, you know, I think like.
Speaker 4 (01:08:15):
At what point of you though, is the year officially
over for you?
Speaker 3 (01:08:17):
Well, and if you're zero and four or one and seven,
two and eight, there's no point in running Flacco back
out there.
Speaker 4 (01:08:24):
Then you got to start giving guys opportunities for the future.
Speaker 2 (01:08:28):
I mean, there's a lot of quarterbacks who go in
the fifth round who never get a chance to play. Yeah,
there aren't many quarterbacks who are taken where Sugar Sanders
was taken, who have Sugar Ar Sanders name, who are
as well known as him. And look, there are some
who had an early round grade on our first round
grade on him, most notably mel kiper I guess, with
the clock ticking on both and with your franchise going
(01:08:50):
through a year where you're probably not gonna make the playoffs,
are you playing both guys at some point or are
you just going, you know what, it's gonna be Flacco
and then it's gonna be the best of these other
two dudes.
Speaker 3 (01:09:00):
Done when the defense gets to the point of it,
or when the year gets to the point when they're
projected four and a half wins. I think once the
season's over, you have nothing to prove by you like,
it does you no good by putting Flacco out there
when the season's out of hand, all right, it does
give you value to figure out who you've got at quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:09:16):
Let's say Gabriel takes over Week five or six and
he's fine, Right, do you still go you know, what
we have to see what we have in Shador.
Speaker 3 (01:09:24):
Yeah, I still think because you drafted both, you have
to see what you have for the future.
Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
Even if that maybe comes at the expense of stunting
the development of somebody who is developing nicely.
Speaker 4 (01:09:33):
Yeah, I would, because you have to.
Speaker 3 (01:09:35):
You have to make a decision on who you're gonna
be going forward, and you can't figure out who you're
gonna be if you get two quarterbacks. So however that
plays out, give both guys a fair opportunity, and then
you've got to make your decision to move on with it.
I just and at best, you know, there may be
a situation arises where they both play pretty well and
then you can move on for assets.
Speaker 5 (01:09:55):
Yeah, I mean, I suppose.
Speaker 2 (01:09:58):
I don't know that either guy is going to be
given a chance to author a big enough body of
work to to you know that the entire league had
a chance to draft Shad or Sanders and didn't, right,
And and so I find it hard to believe that
there's gonna be enough of a sample size of him
playing well that the league is gonna go and we'll
give you something the value for him when the other
(01:10:20):
guy has barely played either at all.
Speaker 3 (01:10:21):
Right, I just I don't think they're gonna be in
contention much at all. I mean, I think they're gonna
be so miserably bad that they're going to start playing
these younger guys because there's no point in playing Flacca
with the season that's out of line.
Speaker 5 (01:10:34):
Anyway, And the next year when you have arch Manning.
Speaker 3 (01:10:36):
Right, and then you get through arch in the mix
because they love arch Manning. What dumpster fire it is,
but it is, And don't turn the don't don't turn
your back on Tyler Hutley.
Speaker 5 (01:10:45):
You know, let's see what he can be. It's it's
just there.
Speaker 2 (01:10:51):
There have been in the history of this league a
lot of weird and sometimes just genuinely downright bad quarterback situations.
Ain't nothing like this one man Flacco is a former
Super Bowl MVP who played with you two years ago.
Kenny Pickett is well played got them in the postseason
like he played very well. Kenny Pickett is Kenny Pickett.
(01:11:12):
Then they have two quarterbacks you drafted this year.
Speaker 5 (01:11:14):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (01:11:16):
And the thing is, like, outside of that, I thought
they had a good draft. Sure, I liked what they
did early in the draft.
Speaker 5 (01:11:21):
Yeah, that's the consensus. Yep. Yeah, And I think they
have a good coach.
Speaker 2 (01:11:25):
I feel for Kevin Stefanski because I think he's a
quality NFL head coach. But it's like, this is what
he has to sift through coming off a year like
the one they.
Speaker 5 (01:11:32):
Had last year. Yeah, it's bizarre. What do we have
happening right now?
Speaker 3 (01:11:37):
Ton same thing routes on air? I would imagine that
they have just scripted.
Speaker 2 (01:11:42):
Out andre Jojabash, who I will correctly identify with the catch.
Speaker 5 (01:11:45):
In the Battle of the end Zone.
Speaker 3 (01:11:46):
I would imagine they are scripting out the plays that
they feel most confident, essentially walking through them, right so
that when Thursday night comes, all things are good because
they're not gonna be on a field tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (01:11:56):
This feels like a jog through it. It's not really
a walk through, but feels like a job.
Speaker 4 (01:12:00):
It's the last tune up tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:12:02):
They're gonna travel, they're gonna meet, They're not gonna be
practicing anywhere Thursday.
Speaker 4 (01:12:06):
There they're in game mode. Right.
Speaker 3 (01:12:08):
This is the closest thing to a what an NFL
Friday practice looks like.
Speaker 5 (01:12:15):
What we're watching right now is what a Friday is.
Speaker 3 (01:12:17):
Wednesday Thursday are your hard days of work? Friday is
you know, Let's be clear on what we're gonna be doing.
Let's run through as much of the plays that we
want to get to and make sure that everyone is
as confident and comfortable where things are at.
Speaker 2 (01:12:32):
It's twenty eight minutes away from twelve and since he
three sixty, we're at Bengals training camp today. Don't forget
Thursday night. We've got Bengals and Eagles on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Pregame coverage is gonna begin at three ZHO five. Game
kicks off at seven thirty with Dan Horde and Bengals
Ring of Honor inductee Dave Lapham. Dave Lapham, as a
(01:12:53):
Bengals Ring of Honor inductee, has been he's got his own.
Speaker 5 (01:12:56):
Golf cart day, He's made a step forward.
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
As a newly minted use see Hall of Famer. Maybe
not here, but if you go to a bear Cat practice,
will you now be afforded the luxury of having your
own golf cart?
Speaker 5 (01:13:08):
That's a great question. That is a great question. Do
I have to get to a practice? Do you have
to wait for the official induction to have Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:13:14):
I don't think, I think now until it happens, it's
just kind of right out there until you're actually cemented
in Now. Last time, when when Marty went in, remember
he went all out with a brand new suit, got
new lining in the suit. I don't know what's expected
of me in that nature. I'm not probably as flashy.
(01:13:36):
I've got a couple suits at home. Can I just
go to the well with one of those? Do I
need to get something made for it?
Speaker 5 (01:13:42):
I think this is a question better pose to your wife.
Speaker 2 (01:13:45):
I don't know that I'm the guy who's going to
help you make the right fashion decisions for your Hall
of Fame conduction.
Speaker 5 (01:13:51):
I think is this is a Meredith question?
Speaker 2 (01:13:53):
Yeah, I would just I would do what I do
when it comes to like events where I have to
dress up.
Speaker 4 (01:13:59):
I guess somebody, I just.
Speaker 2 (01:14:00):
Go all seven year old and go Molly picking out.
Ye tell me what's best make me not look like
a chomp. And she's typically pretty good at that. So
that's what I would. That's what I voted for you. Now,
what are you gonna do for your speech? You're gonna
go funny, You're gonna go you gonna cry again?
Speaker 3 (01:14:14):
I don't know yet, huh, I got time now, I
got time late October. I know how you operate that
the day before start putting that Thursday night, I'm gonna go.
Speaker 5 (01:14:25):
Is your speech, fady.
Speaker 4 (01:14:26):
It's like I'll start putting some pen to paper Thursday.
Speaker 3 (01:14:28):
Now you're gonna use a chat GPT is what you're
gonna do. I thought you guys has used chat Brendle.
Speaker 5 (01:14:32):
It is twenty six.
Speaker 2 (01:14:35):
You could do that twenty six from twelve noon and
since three sixty it's the A. E. Dooran Window, Tony
and mo Football Show. Thanks to A Dooran Window Oakley
greens TOF five point three five three t ophs were
broadcasting from the Airport Painted Body Broadcast area, and thanks
to Ray Saint Clair Roofing for providing us with our hotline.
On ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 5 (01:14:57):
It's a museum, it's a theater. It's the twenty two
minutes away from twelve noon. It's the A. E.
Speaker 2 (01:15:06):
Jordan Window, Tony and Moll Football Show on ESPN fifteen
thirty Molegg or Tony Pike.
Speaker 5 (01:15:11):
By the way, we.
Speaker 2 (01:15:12):
Are closing in on season number six at Twin Peaks,
starting on Mondays beginning at the eighth of September. We'll
be at the west Chest. I'll be at the west
Chester location. Yeah, I guess I got to run that
past James Rapeene. Make sure he's ready to fill in for.
Speaker 4 (01:15:27):
Yeah, week one. Tale as old as time.
Speaker 3 (01:15:30):
I'm golfinget your set your calendar by it?
Speaker 5 (01:15:33):
Man? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:15:33):
Wrong with that?
Speaker 5 (01:15:34):
What I do? Let's see we uh what are we?
Back to Scout? Tea punt?
Speaker 4 (01:15:40):
Back to scout punt?
Speaker 5 (01:15:41):
All right? Ryan Rico is catching the snap.
Speaker 3 (01:15:44):
Not even punt in these not even they put the
judge machine.
Speaker 5 (01:15:48):
Judge machine out there, man.
Speaker 3 (01:15:49):
Yep, that's the last thing you want though, preseason game
number one. You trot out and you get a Punt'll
see what's left in his leg? Sam Hubbard's here. This
is Tim Krumrie.
Speaker 5 (01:16:00):
Tim Cray is here signing autographs.
Speaker 3 (01:16:02):
So star Studed day, yep, star Studed Day. I believe
I saw Anthony Munoz over there. He's getting ready to
probably head to Philly for the game. We mentioned Dave Lapham,
Dan Horde, Star Studyed Crew today.
Speaker 2 (01:16:16):
Ken, can we talk about Anthony Munio's appearance in the
building we work out yesterday?
Speaker 5 (01:16:22):
Oh my goodness, that was phenomenal. I'm not sure we're
a lot. I thought it was good to see Anthony.
Speaker 2 (01:16:29):
It was great to see Anthony Munos, the nicest human
being of all time, the Hall of Famer, Bengals Royalty.
Nothing has ever hurt my soul more than when Hugh
Jackson was coaching the Browns and he had Anthony Munio's
come work with the offensive lineman and like the Browns
sent out a picture of Anthony Munho's wearing Brown's gear
didn't work. Like, nothing has hurt my soul more as
(01:16:50):
a Bengals fan than than seeing that. Yeah, the great
thing about Anthony is he allowed me later on that
year on his show that we do from his his foundations,
then the Top Golf, he allowed me to just crush him.
Speaker 4 (01:17:04):
For it as as deserves.
Speaker 2 (01:17:06):
And the entire time I'm doing that, I'm going if
this guy wanted to beat me to a pulp, it
would require no effort whatsoever.
Speaker 3 (01:17:12):
But yeah, practice is wrapping up. Yeah, now, I would
imagine for those in attendance in the VIP area, he's
walking by.
Speaker 5 (01:17:19):
So I'm gonna tell him now.
Speaker 2 (01:17:20):
West Chester, September eighth, James, will see you there, west
Chester location.
Speaker 4 (01:17:25):
He's wearing a hat again today.
Speaker 3 (01:17:26):
Yeah, he's wearing a hat again today Tony and James,
The Tony and James Football Show. He's wearing a hat.
Dangers the dangers, getting a picture of the pylon and
drags amazing stuff and Drags is not wearing a banana shirt.
It's too bad, James. James correct, I could have I
(01:17:47):
could have made it through today's practice. Well, we almost
have made it through today's practice running by.
Speaker 5 (01:17:52):
This is unbelievable. This is who's who today.
Speaker 3 (01:17:55):
Jay's kind of dressed like he's got to go like
feed the reptiles at the zoo.
Speaker 4 (01:18:00):
I was gonna say an Oasis concert or something like that.
Speaker 3 (01:18:02):
Later, got the brown, got the green Yep, It's uh,
it's pretty unbelievable. Uh, it would appear that practice because
the media just went in.
Speaker 5 (01:18:12):
Yeah, they're wrapped.
Speaker 2 (01:18:13):
The defense is huddled up that things are winding down here.
I'd be a fair assessment. Yes, very good.
Speaker 5 (01:18:21):
Has des Ritter had a chance to congratulate you?
Speaker 3 (01:18:23):
No, I was hoping Dez was just gonna keep walking
and signed some autographs. Being in the UC Hall of
Fame or he will be one day. Yeah, both be
co Hall of famers together. That'd be that'd be pretty cool.
It'd be pretty neat All right, what a time. Uh
So today's practice has finished up, and now we could
start to talk about Thursday night when the Bengals take
on the Philadelphia Eagles.
Speaker 4 (01:18:43):
Not the not the Phillies, the Eagles.
Speaker 3 (01:18:44):
Correct, I'm still thinking about that Kyle Schwarberg Grand Slam
last night.
Speaker 4 (01:18:47):
Uh huh, unbelievable. Good time to be a Philly sports fan,
it really is.
Speaker 5 (01:18:52):
It's good time to be a Cincinnati sports fan. It
really is.
Speaker 3 (01:18:55):
Reds are in the playoff hunt. We got the the
Bengals are doing their thing here like you can't, you can't,
you can't. F C Cincinnati might win the league's come
however the hell that thing works?
Speaker 5 (01:19:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:19:07):
What about the the supporter shield?
Speaker 3 (01:19:10):
The supporter shield obviously still is that still at the
Kenwood Studios? Uh no, they took it back.
Speaker 2 (01:19:16):
Because FC Cincinnati didn't win it last year, had to
go to somebody else. Okay, so we couldn't keep the
supporter shield. Okay, all right, it is uh we'll step aside.
That was an amazing segment. Eighteen minutes away from tall.
Speaker 3 (01:19:26):
Family here today, this is good family day players about
to jump on a plane. Folks saying their final goodbye.
Orlando Brown Junior has a football that is signed by
the whole team. I'm waiting to see who he delivers
that to today. Kay Adams might be Kay Adams. One
of these folks are. Vip ten K is already down
at the h I think like a show to go do, right.
(01:19:48):
I think she's probably gonna interview someone afterwards. She's probably
setting up inside.
Speaker 5 (01:19:52):
Well. I hope she has enough staff with her to Yeah,
you worry everything that she is worry about where things
are at that she needs all right.
Speaker 2 (01:20:00):
It is seventeen away from twelve noon the AE Door
and Window Tonyan Mode Training Camp Show on ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati's.
Speaker 1 (01:20:09):
Court Tennage rickets from the Johnson Heating Temp stamens.
Speaker 2 (01:20:12):
So thirteen away from twelve fon on ESPN fifteen thirty six,
Cy three sixty Coming up at the top of the hour.
It's the AE Door and Window Toni and Mode Training
Camp Show. We're broadcasting from today's Bengals training camp practice,
which is finished.
Speaker 5 (01:20:26):
Tell me if Peyton Sterns on the field.
Speaker 3 (01:20:28):
Yeah, Peyton Sterns just walked out and she traded tennis
rackets with Drew Sample, Ted Carris, and Orlando Brown Junior.
In return, she got some Cincy hats and a signed
ball from the whole team.
Speaker 5 (01:20:41):
I am in awe of how small.
Speaker 3 (01:20:45):
Like Drew Sample's got a racket that looks like a
normal Yes, the racket in Orlando Brown Junior's hands, you
mentioned it, it looks like a pickleball racket. Just doesn't make
like my mind can't comprehend.
Speaker 5 (01:20:56):
That Cincinnati Open underway right now.
Speaker 4 (01:20:59):
In well, the Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (01:21:00):
Cincinnati Open is one of the finest sporting events in
in our region. We have players signing for Today's practice
was not open to the public. The Bengals do have
some VIPs who they're with or where they're from. I
have no idea, but we have some players signing, Charlie
Jones among them, Andrey Yoshavas as well. Devin Cochrane's over there.
(01:21:21):
So practice finishing up. Bengals getting set to jump on
a plane tomorrow and take on the Philadelphia Eagles. We
were talking earlier Tony about potential sleepers. I think more
specifically in the AFC, are there teams that are getting
a lot of love that you just don't understand why.
Speaker 4 (01:21:41):
I don't. I wouldn't say love.
Speaker 3 (01:21:43):
But if if we're talking about a team that maybe
heading the wrong direction, I don't know what Miami is
going to be. They're in this no man's land because
there was so much buzz around them with Mike McDaniel
early coach.
Speaker 5 (01:21:53):
Feels like alame dog. Yeah, a lot of noise there.
Speaker 4 (01:21:58):
I mentioned earlier. I don't I don't see it.
Speaker 3 (01:22:00):
With the Texans, Yeah, I think your point on the
Kansas City Chiefs is valid. It's a tougher division. It
is a team that was able to skate by a
lot last year and in a lot of one possession
games that all went their way. I think from a
scheduling standpoint, it's not the easiest path for Kansas City.
(01:22:22):
And I know that's crazy to think about. You know
the Chiefs and what they've been in the consistency, but Chargers, Eagles, Ravens,
Lions all early in the season. They got to go
to Buffalo, Obviously they're going to Denver at some point.
Speaker 4 (01:22:36):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (01:22:36):
I think that's a tough schedule. I don't think they
fall off yet. But if there's a team that, like
man would that shock you. I think you could see
a path that Kansas City where to take a step back.
Speaker 2 (01:22:47):
Here's what's interesting about the Chiefs. To me, Patrick Mahomes
last year did not have a bad season, but he
didn't have, by his own standards, a great year. You know,
we said that about Joey Vadel like twenty eighteen. Like man,
there's a lot of first basemen who would give up,
you know, five years of their career to have one
of those seasons. But by Joey Vado's standards, it wasn't
(01:23:09):
great because he had been otherworldly, had been an MVP,
you know, finished second the year before, and then the
next season he looked at his numbers and you were like,
those are good numbers for anybody else, not Joey Vada.
The same principal applies to Patrick Mahomes last year. There's
a lot of quarterbacks who would cut off their non
throwing arm to put up the numbers that Patrick Mahomes
put up and play in a Super Bowl. But by
(01:23:31):
his measures, by his standards, the performances were pedestrian. Yeah,
is that the new norm? He's not an old quarterback
by any stretch, right, But at the same time.
Speaker 4 (01:23:41):
He's never looked more human than the last game we
saw him in.
Speaker 2 (01:23:44):
Right, So does Patrick Mahomes turn into Patrick Mahomes again?
Because if the answer is yes, then they're a playoff
team and they overcome whatever roster deficiencies there are. They've
went to work on that offensive line in the aftermath
of the Super Bowl. But if last year's Patrick Mahomes
is this year's Patrick Mahomes, I don't know if that's
(01:24:05):
good enough.
Speaker 5 (01:24:06):
Yeah, another year older with Travis Kelseon have that roster.
I don't know that that's good now.
Speaker 3 (01:24:10):
They they have gone out of the way to try
to add protection for him. Sure, uh you see if
that will ill paint out, But I think I think
that's a valid counter for the Kansas City Chief. What
about the NFC, Well, let me give you one more
on the Jets, they're gonna take a step back. No,
Like you talk about like teams that I think gets
some love because you hear about boy, they're so talented
(01:24:30):
and everybody loves Aaron Glenn. Yeah, and they have Garrett
Wilson and Sauce Gardner.
Speaker 5 (01:24:34):
Cool. Justin Fields is on his third team in three years.
Speaker 3 (01:24:37):
Yeah, I don't see it from the Jets. I think
the Patriots we talked about are better. I think the
Bills are obviously going to be a monster. I still
think Miami's better than the I don't. I think Jets
are a last place team in the in the East.
Speaker 2 (01:24:50):
Well, the obvious answer every single year in the NFC
is the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (01:24:54):
Yeah, what a dumpster fire that is? Like, I don't
think Philly's going anywhere. I think you made a fair
point earlier and talking about the Commanders, how can they
be better than what jayde Daniels was last year? Is
that a team going into year two that takes a
little bit of a step back. I think a team
that's interesting because Ben Johnson has gone and Aaron Glenn
(01:25:15):
has gone. I think the Lions are fascinating.
Speaker 2 (01:25:17):
I think the Vikings are also really interesting. Yeah, but
that whole division was awesome last year.
Speaker 3 (01:25:21):
Right, I'm still I still couldn't tell you what I
think of Jordan Love.
Speaker 5 (01:25:25):
Uh huh.
Speaker 3 (01:25:25):
One day, I think he's the best quarterback. Next day
he's got sixty eight passing yards in the fourth quarter.
But as good as Detroit was last year, how much
does Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson affect that team.
Speaker 5 (01:25:38):
You also like.
Speaker 2 (01:25:42):
There's a little bit of a hangover effect, Like if
you watch Quarterback on Netflix and you didn't know how
the season ended for them where they were blown out
at home in the divisional round. Everything is building toward
this is the Lions year and they don't even get
to the NFC Championship game. You wonder is there emotionally
(01:26:03):
a little bit of a hangover Now. I'm sold on
Dan Campbell. I think he's an awesome leader. I was
dead wrong about him. Ben Johnson and Aaron Klanner held
in very highly regard for reason. Roster is still very
very good. The division is obviously still very difficult. I
think one of the more interesting teams is actually in
that division Chicago Bears with Ben Johnson, with Caleb Williams.
Speaker 3 (01:26:23):
I don't think Caleb Williams says look good no throughout
training camp. And that's a thing where Ben Johnson has
this offensive genius. If you don't have a quarterback that
can deliver like Jared golf was, you know, what what
do you then look like?
Speaker 4 (01:26:34):
Because I do. I Austin's used the term before.
Speaker 3 (01:26:37):
Chicago's won the offseason again, They've made some really good moves.
Does it pan out? But I think the whole NFC
North is fascinating. I still like Tampa in the South, Yes,
but you want to talk about sneaky good. Bryce Young
when he came back from injury last year was great
for the Carolina.
Speaker 5 (01:26:55):
Panthers and games that no one watched.
Speaker 4 (01:26:58):
I think that's gonna be like he's to watch.
Speaker 2 (01:27:00):
There are people who followed the league casually who wouldn't
tell you that Bryce Young got his job back, right,
But at the end of the season last year he
did play very well. Yep, And that's we're paying attention to.
In that division.
Speaker 3 (01:27:14):
NFC West, I think the Rams are gonna be really good. Yeah,
I think the Rams are going to be a very
very good football team.
Speaker 2 (01:27:20):
Boy, the Rams had Philly on the Rocks in that
playoff game last year.
Speaker 4 (01:27:24):
Arizona's kind of no man's land for me.
Speaker 2 (01:27:27):
Well, then there's Washington as well. Yeah, Like, what does
Jade Daniels have for an encore? Right the McLaurin situation.
Speaker 4 (01:27:32):
Can it be any better than what he was?
Speaker 5 (01:27:33):
It could be going very well at all.
Speaker 2 (01:27:37):
Like, I think we would be unsurprised if the Washington
Commanders ended up playing in the NFC title game. And
I'm not sure it would be that surprising if the
Washington Commanders weren't one of the seven of the NFC.
Speaker 4 (01:27:47):
What do you make of San Francisco?
Speaker 3 (01:27:49):
To me, that feels like a team who's had their
opportunities the windows.
Speaker 4 (01:27:53):
We talked about the window here a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:27:55):
It feels like that's a team that you're seeing on
the back end of the window.
Speaker 4 (01:27:59):
Agreed paid brock Party no more.
Speaker 3 (01:28:02):
Rookie that For years it was well, you got mister
you know, brock Party, who you can build around because
he's not expensive, right, and you had some really good years,
but you didn't finish right, And it feels like they're
at the back end.
Speaker 5 (01:28:13):
Of their word. Like that run was long.
Speaker 2 (01:28:15):
Obviously the run started, you know, before a brock Party
became the guy. But that run was really, really long.
It's hard to sustain that level. Obviously last year they
took a major step back. We'll see, all right, it's
five minutes away from twelve o'clock. Practice has finished up.
Jimmy Burrow is walking around the field. Yep, dude walks
around like he owns the place, and he kind of does.
Speaker 3 (01:28:37):
He came over he grabbed k Adams earlier, he was
out there in the middle of the field talking. He grabbed,
He brought her over, went over, come over, introduced her
to some folks.
Speaker 5 (01:28:44):
Yeah, let's be very very clear.
Speaker 3 (01:28:47):
Yes, he he was hanging out in the middle with
with Dan Hord for a while.
Speaker 4 (01:28:51):
He should run the place as the sun runs a place.
Speaker 2 (01:28:54):
If if my son were Joe Burrow, yep, you, I
wouldn't be sitting here, but I would be walking around
like I was Mike Brown.
Speaker 5 (01:29:01):
I would be demanding my own golf cart. Yep. Like
you know, hey might be over here in the tents.
Where's where's my cart?
Speaker 4 (01:29:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:29:06):
Sign me up over here.
Speaker 4 (01:29:07):
He's picking up a good pace right now, trying to
catch up to Joel.
Speaker 2 (01:29:11):
It's good, all right, uh, since he three sixty is
coming up at the top of the hour. It's the
