doing dumb stuff.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Huh. Ain't that's something? Write that down? I got that
'or at hour three since e three sixty on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station and a service of our
good friends at Penn Station. Can I ask you something
real quick? Off, you can ask me whatever you want to. Uh.
The fine folks at Penn Station. Uh huh I have
been a key part of this show and they're going
(00:49):
to continue to be a key part of this show. Yeah,
we're excited for that. Are you done with your Christmas shopping? No?
Not yet? Well may I tell you that if you're
not done with your Christmas shop, take care of the
ones on your Christmas list by simply just going to
get in a pen Station gift card. Okay, you can
go get a gift card and while you're there. Just
(01:10):
have yourself a sandwich, give yourself a sub maybe a
freshly squeezed lemonade. Tone.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
I have one person left to buy for. Oh and
his name is Tony Pike. Wow, so wow. You may
have just given me an idea for your own Christmas.
What about a since E three to sixty gift bundle? Ooh,
the folks at Skyline and Sensy shirts and Penn Station
all come together.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
It'll be one hell of a basket. What a basket
that would be. Huh. Now we're getting somewhere. Yeah, Penn
Station gift cards. Don't forget about that for that special
someone on your wish list, on your holiday list. I'm
the other way around. I've got so much I feel
like I still need to do. It's it's sickening, and
it's going to start tonight. We're gonna take the kids
(01:55):
to the Festival of Lights. Oh, a yearly tradition, the
Festival of Lights. It's just a battle, to be quite honest,
because you want to get there in time. You beat
some of the traffic, but in doing so, Austin, you
might sacrifice some nap time for the kids, and then
(02:16):
they're cranky and they don't enjoy the lights themselves. Did
I see you post a video of your son watching
some tape? Oh? Man, he's studying the film. Last night,
the wild Man was watching some UC Xavier tape. Here's
the craziest thing about Wilder. And by the way, we're
waiting on Joe Daniman. He had a slight delay in
his schedule, but he'll be with us shortly. It drives
me bonkers because when Wilder is at home, we cannot
(02:39):
get him, for the life of us, to nap. He
never naps, no matter what we do. He's just like
me for real, except he went to all but one
UC football game this year and napped at some point
during every game. And then he goes to the shootout
on Saturday and he sleeps during the shootout. Unbelievable. This
(03:02):
kid won't fall asleep in the comfort of his home,
but we'll go to some of the loudest environments we
can produce and he falls asleep. Yeah, it's insane. So
yesterday we're talking. He he he got a program from
the game and he's always like read this, read that.
He's asked me to read it like fifty times since Saturday.
I'm like well, this isn't a book to read. It's
(03:23):
just kind of pictures, right, and what we go through.
And he's pointing out he could tell you what each
player's name is now when he shoots baskets, He's like,
seems lukoshis a Z's bandago, so he knows the players now.
But I think he missed so much of the game.
He wanted to watch the tape and as he's watching
it last night, he says, well, I like you see
more than Xavier. And then he says, I also like
(03:44):
you see more than the Browns. Well that's good, and
the Browns kind of got astray last night? Does he like?
Speaker 2 (03:50):
What I would have asked is do you like Xavier
more than the Browns? Hmmm it's a good point. Yeah,
it's a good point. Who do you like more in
that battle?
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Yeah? Look, okay, let's get to our guest here right
down the middle here. I am so excited to talk
to our next guest. It's it's one of the weekly
segments that I really truly look forward to the most.
It's our good friend from Fox nineteen Joe Daniman, Hi Joe.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
So yesterday, Austin sent out a tweet saying how excited
he was for the show, and he tagged Wes Moller
and myself on it. That tweet got three likes.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
If that's not true, it got twelve.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
I love it. Get him yep, it got twelve. Man,
what an exciting.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Time people like me, just somebody out there, Joe.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Before we get to the Bengals, what did you make
of the Crossdown Shootout this year?
Speaker 4 (04:50):
I absolutely loved it. It's my favorite sporting event all year.
I'm very open about that. That look. Opening Day is
is such a great party and a great time, but
the outcome of the game doesn't mean as much as
the Crosstown Shootout primetime games of the Bengals. The atmosphere
is awesome, but it doesn't match the Crosstown Shootout. I
thought what you saw was what makes college basketball so great,
(05:12):
that that players and teams in college basketball are just
by nature, they're flawed, they make mistakes, they miss shots.
It can be ugly, it can be up and down
with the runs for each side, but at the end,
what never disappoints is the atmosphere and the energy and
the advantage of having that game on your home court.
(05:33):
I thought there was a time at about the seven
to eight minute mark, where Xavier had a chance to
pull away enough that they could withstand the inevitable u
SE run that was going to come. They missed some
chances to really kind of distance themselves and then it
felt like Fifth Third Arena kind of willed you see
(05:54):
to this point where they were going to win this game.
And what I thought was really cool about it, and
my two big takeaways from it were that that I'm
more convinced than ever that even though we could have
a debate on who you See's best player is, there's
no debate going back to last year in this year
that Sima's Lukochi's is their closer and their most clutch player.
(06:16):
And the other part that I took away from it
was just how meaningful this was to the legendary U
SEE alum who were there to watch the game. And
we all saw Kenyon Martin and letter of Stokes. But
I have a shot of Corey Blunt in the.
Speaker 5 (06:33):
Crowd, That's what I'm saying, Like he was the one
trying to get Everybody was like Corey Blunt, I'm like
you mentioned being behind him, Like hey Corey, uh really
tall kind of reminds me of the time that I
went to my justin timber Lay Continent, had to sit
behind Greg Odin.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
That was a fun night.
Speaker 6 (06:51):
But that was cool to me how much it meant
to those guys and for UC to get that street
And it was cool to me as well as someone
who who lives for this game every year, to see
you see get the win and embrace what the win
meant because a lot of times you see folks will say, oh,
it doesn't mean as much to us, Oh it's.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
Their super Bowl. You can tell on Saturday what it
meant to you. See. I think that's great for the rivalry.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
Obviously, the Freemantle news, tough for Xavior, tough turnaround against
yukon tomorrow. The Bearcats welcome in Dayton on Friday, which
is playing at an unbelievable level. So I think a
lot of people would categorize it as a sloppy or
a slugfest type of win because both teams shot the
ball poorly. If you fast forward to Sunday, you want
to talk about a sloppy win. That's what the Bengals had.
(07:42):
With all the penalties and all the turnovers. They find
a way to win a game. How do you categorize
what you witnessed on Sunday with the Bengals win.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
Yeah, ugly, sloppy, pick your disjointed, pick your favorite word
for what it was. And the weird thing is it
is during the Zach Taylor era, this team has been
very good about not being penalized, and that has become
a thing here in the last months, and certainly the
number of young players and the number of backup players
(08:16):
they've been forced to play, just for example, on the
offensive line, I think it's starting to show in the
amount of penalties they're getting, the turnovers with Burrow in
kind of Feluki, it's not something that's gonna happen every week,
and you can understand why he was upset, not only
with the way he played, but just with the general
sloppiness of the team. But to me, guys, that one
(08:38):
felt like the last gimme on the schedule. Yeah, and
here we are with only three games left and the
bank will still have a flicker and they still haven't
beaten the team with a winning record, And so that
would be the discussion point for me going forward is Look,
Cleveland is a bit of a mess. I don't agree
with the decision to go to dtr at quarterback. They
(09:00):
truly are trying to tank for a better draft pick,
which they might be. Certainly, I would assume most Bengals
fans would rather see him than Jameis Winston and his
ability to make big plays. But then after that you
have Denver, and then after that you have Pittsburgh, and
so the Bangles are going to have to beat a
good team multiple times here in the final three weeks,
(09:20):
and Sundays felt to me like the last real gimme
on the schedule that they can show up and play
poorly and win somewhat comfortably. And it's funny to me too.
The last point I'll make about that game is the
idea that Zach Taylor sent out the Big Three as
captains and to show Brian Callahan this is what you left.
(09:44):
And I get it, you can't turn down a head
coaching job at the NFL. But if you're Brian Callahan
and you've seen those three walk out to midfield and
then you have to put the ball in the hand
of Will Levice and you just kind of say to yourself, man,
oh man, did I make the right decision to come
here as my first head coaching job and leave those
(10:04):
guys behind, and what we could have done in Cincinnati
with those three. So yeah, Ugly sloppy got to win
last gimme and now it sets the Bengals up to
have that flicker here the last three weeks.
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Here's Joe Burrow. His house was broken into, He's dealing
with a bum leg top both as first and second
string left tackle or not playing in the game. He
doesn't play his best. Obviously, there's a level of frustration there.
They win the game, Joe's not happy. What did you
make of the interaction between Joe Burrow and Zach Taylor.
It's not the first time we've seen Joe Burrow mad
(10:37):
at the end of a game, even with this team winning.
What do you make about this Joe Burrow that we're seeing.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
Well, my take on this is I'm I was really
surprised how much interest this got from the fan base
immediately after what happened. And I say that by look,
I know, everybody listening to this doesn't do social media,
doesn't do Twitter, But the amount of people who are
pulling that video and curious about it and really interested
(11:05):
in it was surprising to me. You played a position
at a very high level. I'm sure you've had moments
like this with your coaches before, and certainly we've seen
Joe have these moments before. I think what you saw,
and I'll do this in two parts. Let's do this
fan reaction first. I think the fan reaction here is
a bit of a side taking, right that at this
(11:26):
point of Joe Burrow and Zach Taylor's relationship as head
coach and quarterback, people have taken sides on which side
they're on. And everybody in Cincinnati's going to take a
side with Joe Burrow. I mean, the guy's a superhuman
football players, he's a celebrity, He's everything you'd want at
the quarterback position. And then there's the on the other
(11:46):
side of it is you know, people are questioning Zach
Taylor and his ability here to get this team to
the next level. So when you see Joe Burrow unleash
and Zach Taylor is the person that has to be
the person being unleashed pawn, people are gonna take sides,
and certainly there I would say more likely than not
going to take Joe Burrow's side. But I think you
(12:06):
made the point. The idea that it's been a long
week for Joe, and it felt like to me, we've
all seen Christmas Vacation Clark Griswold, and you think about
everything Clark goes through the week leading up to Christmas
right where here Cousin Eddie shows up and Uncle Lewis
burns down his tree, and the turkey's terrible, and fix
the loophole, I mean, everything that can go wrong in
(12:28):
his house. The lights won't turn on, all this stuff,
and then he gets the Jelly of the Month club
and he just loses his mind as Hollylujah, where's the tail?
And all that that's Joe Burrow. I mean, he goes
on Monday Night football, he gets speak to hell, He
injures his knee. He comes home, his house is broken into.
People are flying drones over his house. People have found
(12:49):
out that Olivia Ponton is whatever she is, the relationship
with Joe Burrow. Then you go out Sunday, you finally
can put all that stuff to bed and just play football.
Team plays like absolute crap. They look unprepared, they look
mentally checked out. They win the game because there's so
much more talented than Tennessee and they have a quarterback
(13:10):
who can function at a high level. They win the
game and Joe just snaps. Right, It's cut Griswold, just snapping,
and you got to let the guy snap, and you
gotta let it happen. And it happened. He unloaded, he
did whatever he had to do to get it out
of his system. And the explanations are what they are
about the communication and the headset going out and all
that thing. I don't think this is any kind of
a rift. I don't think this is anything big picture.
(13:32):
I think it's the guy who had a terrible week
who finally just had a moment where he snapped and
it was seen live on TV. I'm very interested to
know and to see if Hard Knocks ye fought any
more of this moment and if they'll show it and
we get it. The Bengals might shut it down and
say no, but this is what we watch for, right,
(13:54):
I mean, we want to see this on Hard Knocks
and if there was more to it beforehand, if there
was more to it after the fact. So to me,
it just felt like a quarterback who had a terrible
week who just needed a snap, but he finally snapped,
and now he's got it out of the system and
he can just go forward.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
This might be an off the wall question, but do
we know who at the Bengals has final say in
what goes on hard knocks, because I think some of
that like interaction would be received very well publicly.
Speaker 3 (14:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
No, I think you make a good point there. I
don't know who has final say. I've had some I've
had some off camera discussions with Zach Taylor about the
hard knock stuff, and you know, very publicly he just
said many times he thinks it's a good thing for
the Bengals, for people around the country, football fantasy, all
(14:44):
the personalities and the Bengals. But every coach will tell
you off camera it's they don't want it. It's a nuisance,
it's annoying, it's intrusive. I do know he has some
say and what gets cut. I don't know if he's
the only one or if he's the last line of defense,
but I do know that Zach does have input into
(15:08):
what can and cannot stay inside of that. I would
think that would fall on I would certainly think the Blackburns,
the girls would would have some say on that. That
kind of feels like that would fall into their general
area of expertise of what will play well what won't
play well. So I don't know the exact answer, but
(15:28):
I do know Zach Taylor does have a little bit
of say in what can be cut from the show.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
We've had a chance to spend time in these conversations
about a Marius Mims, and obviously we talked a bunch
about T Higgins last week and Jamar Chase and Joe
Burrow's greatness. In your opinion, where do you slot Chase Brown?
I think Chase Brown has been phenomenal for the Cincinnati Bengals.
I think he's one of those pieces you genuinely build around.
(15:57):
Are you surprised at just how good he's been for
the Bengals this year?
Speaker 4 (16:02):
I am surprised. I didn't know. I didn't think he
could And maybe I'm wrong in thinking this, because you
look back at his numbers at Illinois and the number
of carries and catches and touches he would get and
still be productive. Should have told us he can do this.
But when you do it over a seventeen game schedule,
(16:23):
at his side and his skill set, I still thought
he was best likely to be served in a timeshare
running back that could keep him fresh and allow him
to still hold on to whatever burst juice he needs
at the end of the season to be explosive, because
we all thought this would be a playoff team, and
(16:43):
it still might be. We'll see, But it doesn't look
like he's slowing down. In fact, it looks like he's
as sending as the year goes on. And it's not
just the touchdowns and the yards from scrimmage. To me,
it's the number of touches he's getting. Three times in
the last six games, he's had twenty seven or more touches.
And I've asked Zach about this multiple times throughout the year,
(17:07):
and every time I asked Zach about it, he says
the same thing that yes, he understands they're giving him
too many touches. They want to limit the touches. That's
why they brought in Khalil Herbert. But you can't take
the guy out the field. It's almost the point now
where it's really a detriment to the offense if you
take that weapon off the field. So I've been pleasantly
surprised with how well he's done in a lead back role,
(17:32):
one that we did not see coming for Chase Brown
this year. We thought it might get to a sixty
to forty seventy thirty if he kept ascending throughout the
year and Zach Moss were healthy as a counterpoint to
him and what he's doing at this point. But I've
been pleasantly surprised with what Chase Brown's done, and I
think you're looking now for a guy that for the
(17:53):
next two years on his rookie contract, if you can
pencil in as a guy you give the ball to
twenty plus times game and feel really good about it.
Not just the big plays, but it's the running between
the tackles and it's the finishing of that run for
the final touchdown in Tennessee is. I didn't know Chase
Brown had that in them. It wasn't just a four
(18:14):
minute offense and moving the change. It was being stopped
to pushing the pile, toughness of reaching over the goal
line for a smaller guy to do that. I think
he's answered every question you can have about Chase Brown
as a running back here in Cincinnati going forward, Joe.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
You mentioned how bad Will Levis and the Tennessee Titans are.
When you look at how bad they are, and how
bad the Cowboys and Cooper Rush are. Do you allow
yourself to say, Okay, the defense is improving, they're they're
gaining confidence, or do you look at in the lens
of you know, this is a bad defense. They've played
some bad offenses. Because what I don't want to happen is,
(18:51):
you know, you play against the Browns and they're gonna
have Dorian Thompson Robinson and the defense plays well again,
and then all of a sudden it becomes well, maybe
you don't need to overhaul as much on the defense,
and then you're in the same position next year. How
do you how do you stay away from from putting
those blinders on in a way of yeah, they've been good,
but they've done so against some bad teams as well.
Speaker 4 (19:10):
Yeah, I just can't get myself to believe what I'm
seeing is legitimate. They for six turnovers against the Titans,
and the Titans still score twenty seven points. Now, six
of those points came on literally the last play of
the game. So I'm not being duped. I'm not being fooled,
(19:32):
and I don't think the front office it will be
fooled by that. There are too many smart people who
watch football and Cincinnati to look at this and be
fooled that they can just run it back again next year.
Certainly talking to defensive players and talking to defensive coaches,
there's been this idea that's gone around here between them,
(19:54):
what they're telling us, that they just simplified things and
maybe that's helped this team make a few plays. And
they have made some plays. You have to give him credit.
They've they've made some plays and force some turnovers, and
they've played well enough defensively the last two games for
this team to win. But no one's being fooled that
(20:16):
this team needs major changes on defense at every level,
especially defensive lineman, certainly at the safety position. You know,
the Genostone thing. Look, he's made a couple of plays
back to back weeks. He said he's starting to feel
comfortable in the spot he is right now, and good
for him, but he has to show a lot more
(20:37):
than just two weeks against bad quarterbacks making mistakes in
the ball being thrown right to him. I'm not being
fooled by it. I'm certain most Bangles fans aren't being
fooled by it, and I certainly would believe that the
people making decisions on personnel and roster decisions. Aren't being
fooled by this as well? Because you're right, dtr is next.
(20:58):
Then it's a rookie quarterback be it. Bon Nicks has
been very good this year and has a great coach.
But I still think we're smart enough to understand what
this is right now. It's a defense taking advantage of
bad teams with bad quarterbacks and making enough play for
them to win.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
Before I let you go, you mentioned the slight possibility
at the playoffs. I know there's folks that believe. I
know there's folks that are hesitant that have already scratched
it off their radar. For me, it becomes a little
bit more feasible if I see the Chargers win on
Thursday night. If the Broncos went on Thursday night, I'm
out because the Chargers aren't going to lose to the
New England Patriots and the Raiders, And that pretty much
(21:38):
shuts the door. Where are you out of that? Is
it Thursday for you? Would would that open the door
and the path for you? Are you already there? Do
you need to see him beat the Browns first? How
do you fall in that category?
Speaker 4 (21:51):
That's it it's Thursday Night, because if Thursday Night happens,
then you're going to be playing meaningful football in week seventeen,
in week eighteen, and I think as a Bengals fan,
if you're a Bengals fan, that that's all you want
is to take this to another week, right, just just
have Thursday Night go the right way, win on Sunday,
and take this to week seventeen, where then you control
(22:12):
week seventeen because you play the Broncos, and if you
look at you control week seventeen, then you can control
week eighteen as well. So it's to me, is just
trying to kick the can down the road until you
get to week eighteen and just have something on the
line for week eighteen, because we don't know what the
Steelers might be doing week eighteen, We don't know what
(22:34):
the Chiefs might be doing week eighteen, and those teams
matter significantly, significantly to the Bengals in this equation. So yeah,
I'm with you. Thursday Night to me feels like the
biggest non Bengals game of the season for the Bengals.
That if the Broncos win the game, it's it's probably over.
But if the Chargers win at home and they're favored
(22:56):
to win. Ye bo Nick did not play well last week.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
I'll buy it.
Speaker 4 (23:00):
Then I think the door opens for the Bengals and
it gets a little bit real. It gets a little
bit real if Thursday night happens for the Bengals.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
Dan and you're the best? Are you at the levee
this week? I know the holidays are coming up, schedules
get crazy. You guys at the levee this week?
Speaker 4 (23:13):
You ready for this? So I promised Cam Taylor Britt
early in the season and maybe you had to pick
six this year, I would wear the overalls that he
wore early in the season. You can find it on Twitter.
He wore the Bengals overalls to a game and so
he had come up to me, said, he's coming tomorrow night,
our guests, we'll see if can get another one, and
(23:34):
I have to wear go Cam Taylor BRIT's overalls tomorrow
night at Newport on the lest I saw.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
A little I don't know if it was dancing or
what you did last I thought it was good. I
thought you you you showed yourself well last week.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
So I'm looking forward to hit a little hand slap
yeah at the.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
End yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, I like that.
I like that. Joe, You're the best man. Thank you
so much for your time. We'll talk again soon.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
