fifteen thirtys with Moeger last night at Twin Peaks and
he got an email while we were on air that
the talkback feature was fixed so we can get talkbacks
in Today. Scott Saderfield is at the podium. He's going
to be speaking about the undefeated in Big twelve place
(01:04):
Cincinnati Bearcats getting ready to host Baylor this weekend. We'll
hear from Scott Saderfield today, you'll hear from Zach Taylor,
who spoke yesterday. And we've got our friend Joe Daneman
from Fox nineteen ready to join us at one o'clock
this afternoon. Plenty on the Bengals, plenty on college football,
plenty on the National Football League, and so much more
(01:25):
coming up for the next three hours.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Austin.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
I was sitting earlier today trying to figure out a
lot of other stories happening across the sports world, from
Major League Baseball last night and the Blue Jays punching
their ticket to the World Series a Monday night football doubleheader.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
NBA is back.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
The Bearcats are up to number twenty one in the
polls Luke Fickel got a vote of confidence. I don't
know how that happened. And tomorrow Big twelve media day
for the UC Bearcats, Big twelve media day for the
women's U SEE Bearcats. We had Big East where Xavier
was picked eighth to finish.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
In the Big East Conference. Among all of those Austin,
I believe Big East Media Day is today. Okay, Square Garden.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
So Xavier preseason ranked eighth in the Big East poll.
Out of all those that are happening in Austin, what's
the biggest story is it the Blue Jays?
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Yeah? I think so, and more than anything, the bond
forged by Jeff Hoffman and David Bell and the way
that they have led Toronto to the Fall Classic. There's
a lot of great storylines with that team. I mean,
Toronto signed Vladdie Junior to a huge deal in the
off season, they went and got George Springer Bell obviously
(02:45):
David Bell in the development of that entire organization. So yeah,
I mean, I think it's fun. I think it's a
fun World Series. I think half of America tunes out
because it's the Dodgers and they hate him, and the
other half of America doesn't care about the Blue Jays.
So I don't know if this is a good thing
for ratings from Major League Baseball. I don't know why
anybody cares about the ratings. As a fan, I think
(03:07):
it's going to be entertaining and anytime you get a
chance to watch shoe heyo Tani, I'm all in on that,
you know what.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
I think has been one of the hallmarks of the
playoffs up to this point, and it definitely laid true
last night as well. The teams that have made it
to where we're at, they've done so riding on the
backs of their stars. I mean, sho Heyo Tani single
handedly put together I think the most impressive game in
baseball history. Three home runs, ten strikeouts. Just what he
(03:35):
was able to do on Friday Night was unbelievable. But
if it would have been the Mariners Austin, we would
have talked about on Friday night Cayl Raleigh hitting a
huge home run, and then last night Julio Rodriguez and
Cal Rally both hitting home runs. I mean, Cayl Raley
for the season, he had to actually show up the
way he did in the playoffs was unbelievable. But on
(03:58):
the other side of it, Springer comes through with the
seventh inning, three run home run when the Blue Jays
were down to last night to give them the lead,
which eventually was enough to win the game. But among
anything else, how about the postseason that Vlad Junior has had.
He's hitting four forty two this postseason, six home runs.
(04:19):
He's been absolutely incredible in the middle of that lineup
for the Blue Jays. Bob Baschett, who's been out with
a knee injury, is going to return for the World Series.
If you're looking at just a series in itself, and
we saw Dave Roberts on Friday night, he got up
on the pony. He said, let's win four more and
ruin baseball. And I think he's trying to lean in
Austin to what you're talking about. Where people think it's
(04:40):
bad for baseball, it's also it's a treat to watch greatness.
And the Dodgers they're great and I'm watching that in
the lens last night of thinking at the end, Okay,
Blue Jays, Mariners, who stands a chance against the Dodgers.
I would have leaned Toronto because they have the ability
to put ten up on any given night.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
Yeah, I mean just the depth of that roster and
their ability to hit home runs especially. I mean, obviously
Seattle has shown that they can hit homers, we Suarez
with the dumper, with Jay Rod, but the consistency of
that Toronto lineup, and they do it in a lot
of different ways. Yeah, they hit home runs, but also
you know, they hit the ball to the opposite field,
(05:20):
they hit the ball into the gaps, and they're just
all together a really clean team. And they were able
to stand a couple of early losses and fight back.
They deserve a ton of credit.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
The Dodgers ninety three and sixty nine in the regular season,
the Blue Jays ninety four and sixty eight. Blue Jays
will host game one Friday night at eight o'clock.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
That'll be awesome. That's going to be fantastic to watch
Monday night, to show David Bell on the screen.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
And for Don Mattingly, Johnny Baseball, you said how many
years of service to Major League Baseball?
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Don Mattingly has been in baseball for forty years. Man
over forty years. He played for fourteen years, he managed
for twelve. He has been a coach for seventeen. He's
been in Major League Baseball since nineteen eighty two. An
all time great player with some all time great organizations.
(06:12):
Never been to the World Series until now. That's cool
as an assistant coach with Toronto and he can thank
David Bell for helping him get there without a doubt.
I mean, it's not a coincidence. Nope, David Bell gets
there and this team a sents.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
YEP Monday night football doubleheader last night. Let's start with
I thought was the less interesting game. Seattle Seahawks beat
the Houston Texans. Later in the show, I want to
have a conversation about actual Super Bowl contenders and how
many there are as we now embark on Week eight
of the National Football League season, do you view the
(06:46):
Seattle Seahawks as a team that can contend? Jackson Smith
and Jigba is phenomenal. He's unbelievable. I just don't know
still if I can get past Sam Darnold. Although he's
been great, I don't know if he makes them a
Super Bowl contender. I think their defense is really good.
They beat up on the Texans last night. That final
score wasn't indicative as to how the game went, but
(07:07):
I thought that was an impressive win by the Seahawks.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
I think in the NFC it's the Rams or the Lions.
Those are the two teams that I think are a
top the NFC, and then I think there's a pretty
sizable gap until the next ring of teams, and maybe
Seattle is in that second grouping. Their defense is certainly
good enough, and their defense is interesting, but I don't
know if top to bottom they have the depth and
(07:30):
the playmakers outside of JSN to maybe get over the hump,
and especially if you're already in the division with the Rams,
and even though the Niners are beat up they're playing
good football as well. I feel like that would be
a tough, tough hill for Seattle to climb.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
I want to talk more about those contenders as we
go today. I think I know that there is a
contender in the Detroit Lions. They beat the Tampa Bay
Bucks last night twenty four to nine. And as much
as we can talk about the Detroit a defense, Austin
we will. Jamiir Gibbs last night was fantastic. One hundred
and thirty six on the ground. He had an eighty
two in the air. He is an unbelievable player that
(08:10):
is just getting better every time he gets on the field.
I'm and Ross Saint Brown let him in receiving again.
I don't think it was the cleanest Lions offensive game
that they could have played, But more impressively than anything
is the way they were able to bottle up Tampa
with their defense. That Detroit defense is getting better week
by week. Tampa another unfortunate loss last night. Mike Evans
(08:30):
a collar bone in injury, injury, and a concussion. It's
an uphill battle. They're dealing with so many injuries. I
still think Tampa is a team to contend, but last night. Man,
I thought was more about the brilliance of not only
what the Lions can do offensively, but that team as
a whole.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
It's been fun to see Detroit kind of come into
their own on defense, because that was the big question,
right Aaron Glenn leaves, a couple of other guys leave.
Can Detroit get back to that level? They played at
that level last night? And oh, by the way, they
didn't have their starting safety, Brian Branch was serving a suspension,
and like for them to clamp Tampa the way that
they did, and how good the Tampa offense has been,
(09:08):
specifically through the air. All night. Baker Mayfield was second
guessing himself. He was patting the ball, he was jumping
around in the pocket, He couldn't get to his first read.
There was no rhythm for Baker Mayfield all night, and
that I think is a good thing for Detroit, especially
when that pass rush starts to get home and they're
starting to get a little bit healthier on that defensive line.
If their defense plays like that, I have a hard
(09:31):
time believing anybody is going to beat the Detroit Lions
and the NFC, Like you know, and it's weird right now.
You think about the NFC and that conference. You know,
the number one team, the Green Bay Packers, Yep, and
we're kind of forgetting about them. And we had that conversation. Yeah,
and I had that conversation the other day. It's like,
(09:52):
I'm not entirely convinced that Green Bay is a good
football team or an elite football team, but here they
are in October number one seed.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Sad news yesterday as well, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running
back Doug Martin passed away in police custody on Monday.
The Oakland Police Department reported that prior to his death,
Martin was involved in a break in out of residence
in Oakland. While responding officers attempted to detain him, a
struggle occurred, and after he was taken into custody, he
(10:24):
became unresponsive and later passed away. His agent and Martin's
parents had been advocating for some help for him. He
had been feeling overwhelmed and disoriented. He left his home
during the night, entered into a neighbor's residence, and obviously
things got out of hand. But a very sad situation
for Doug Martin, who was just thirty six years old
(10:45):
in passing away.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
One of the most fun players that's ever played for
the Buccaneers. I had a record rushing game of like
two hundred and fifty six yards, I want to say,
at one point, and one of the best nicknames of
all time, the muscle Hamster, the muscle Hamster. Love it uh.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
NBA, Yes, the National Basketball Association is back tonight. Rockets
Thunder Banner Night in Oklahoma City, and then the Warriors
and the Lakers will be your late game. Austin, we
were talking about this earlier. Both games tonight on NBC.
You're excited for NBC. It's kind of crazy. I'm more
excited tonight about NBC's presentation of the NBA than I
(11:27):
am the actual game. I know that Lakers Warriors plays
in the first game or in the second game.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
Yeah, and Kevin Durant with the Rockets, which is interesting,
and it's Rockets Thunder, the defending champs in game number one.
But to be able to hear this tonight, oh yep,
this is the NBA right here. This sound John tesh
round Ball rock It's back. You can only play so
(11:56):
much of that. He'll like appear. But NBC and then
I know they teased it during Sunday Night Football yesterday too,
two days ago, Michael Jordan's sit downs. Excuse me, Bengals fan,
Michael Jordan, Yes, sit downs with Mike Turrico, and I
believe it's called inner excellence and to go inside the
mind of Michael Jordan. And also the game of basketball.
(12:17):
I can't wait, man, love it. Can't wait. Love it.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
As I mentioned, you see is up to number twenty
one in the polls. And the athletic director at Wisconsin
yesterday came out and not only gave Luke Fickele a
vote of confidence, but also implored that they need to
raise more money to put into the football program. Can
you imagine what's going on in Wisconsin right now with
how far that program has fallen, And now the answer
(12:43):
is We're okay with Fickle. We need you to give
us more money. We need to put more money into
this program. That is a definition right now of a
dumpster fire. We will know more about u SE basketball tomorrow.
As I mentioned, Xavier picked eighth in the preseason poll
in the Yeast and Austin the state of Ohio has
(13:06):
now welcomed in nil to high school athletes an Ohio
Common Please judge granted a temporary restraining order on Monday
that will allow Ohio high school athletes to enter into
deals that profit off their talent. Okay, Ohio currently is
one of only six states, and I didn't know this.
(13:26):
Ohio is one of six states that has rules in
place that don't allow high school athletes to accept payments
for their name. Alabama, Indiana, Misian, Mississippi, and Wyoming are
the others. Now, this came about because Jasmine Brown is
a mother of Jamiir Brown. Yes, they filed a lawsuit
in Franklin County. He plays at Wayne in Hubert Heights
and he is the top wide receiver in the twenty
(13:48):
twenty seven class. He's verbally committed to Ohio State, and
the mother, Jasmine said that he is already missing out
on more than one hundred thousand dollars in potential nil deals.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
Yeah, so the common.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
Police judge but a hold on that, and now Ohio
athletes can make money on their name, image, and likeness.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
So good for them. I think it opens up an
entirely different can of worms that we can get into.
But speaking from experience and certainly with you know, the
last couple of weeks in mind, go get your bread man, yep,
go get your.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Good money, Go get money. I just can't imagine how
that can play out in high school though, well, I
mean surely there's not. There may be a select few
high schools that can raise that type of money, but
I would imagine, well, that's gonna.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Be hard to do, is it. Is it about high
schools or is it about local businesses? True? Because you know,
I think of Dayton and Wayne in that area. I
don't know, let's say Vandalia Rental Company, those people they
sell the rent those big machines, right yeah. What if
they say, hey, we want you to post on your
(14:56):
social media you know, here's our special come see us,
and you film a video at our lot telling people
to come to Vandelia Rental Company. Pay them how much money? Yeah? Right? Like,
if you think about it, that's what NIL was supposed
to do, especially at the college level. Hey Tony Pike,
(15:18):
come promote Skyline Chili. We'll give you some money while
you play for the Bearcats. It then devolved into schools
buying players. There needs to be a measure in place
in high school. I would think that prevents that from
Moler can buy a player, sant X can buy a player,
Wayne can buy a player, Trotwood can buy a player. Redding,
(15:41):
of course, with the money from Tony Pike can buy
Whip the creamy Whip. You know, there's a difference between hey,
you're a popular player that can advance our brand, or hey,
we'll pay you to move across the state to come
to this schools.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
That's that's what I think is going to be opening
up the can of worms. M Hey, you know you
live where, well, why don't you come into Ohio? We
can pay you. Why don't you transfer here? That's where
I think it gets a little bit dicey. Let's take
our first break, and.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
There will be families by the way. Absolutely we'll have
no problem picking up and moving. If it means that
they're going to get one hundred thousand dollars payout in
some way, shape or correct, it's not correct.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
They won't think twice. Let's take a break, gets your bread.
That's a lot in segment number one, we just covered
a lot of different areas. Let's get back on track.
Let's start with the Bengals and a question that I
have from watching Thursday Nights came when we return since
he three sixty thanks to Skyline Chili On ESPN fifteen thirty,
Cincinnati Sports Station.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
Is Football in the NATI, brought to you by Postman
Law on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the
Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Yeah, that sounds good. Football in the NATI.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
Since He three sixty esp in fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's Sports
Station ask a question about what we saw Thursday night. Okay,
Dylan Fairchild, although viewed as healthy all week, did not start.
Jalen Rivers and Dalton Reisner started. Now, we had a
conversation earlier, and more of the Riisner conversation is because
(17:19):
it was a Thursday night game, and if so, you
move on past it. But there were different players on
the offensive line that you're already kind of shuffling around.
We've seen the usage of samajp Ryan. We've also seen
throughout the season Jermaine Burden is a healthy scratch more
often than not. McKinley Jackson has been a healthy scratch
more often than not. We've talked at times this year
about Logan Wilson and his snap count at times being
(17:43):
taken away. Cam Taylor Britt was a healthy scratch and
in doing so, Austin I viewed it as a positive
because I viewed that as this staff and this organization
is acting with urgency. They're not sitting around and just
waiting for these players to figure it out. They're making
moves to try to win football games. And I think
(18:05):
urgency should be applauded because that's how I want an organization.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
That I root for to operate.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Yeah, that's what we asked for to not well, let's
give him another week and see if he can figure
it out. If they're not getting the job done, get
him out now. This could go in a different direction.
If you win games because of that, it's great. If
you lose games, then you start to wonder, well, man,
not only are we losing, but we're not playing Kam
(18:32):
Taylor Britt, We're not playing Jermaine Burton. Are we going
to play fairchild? What's that look like? And then you
start to have the conversation of roster management and where
this is going. I view it on the side of
a player that Mo brought up a couple times yesterday
on the Tony and Mo Football Show in Genostone. I
don't know that I've seen or safety play more consistently
(18:55):
than I've seen with Genostone. So what I don't want
this to turn into is a situation that we talked
about with the Reds all year Austin. How many times
we talked about with the Reds man players aren't getting
it done. They're making moves, they're moving guys around the lineup,
they're sending guys down, they're bringing guys up, They're trying
a lot, except when it came to Matt McClain. For
(19:17):
whatever reason, Matt McClain stayed in the lineup.
Speaker 3 (19:19):
Matt McClain in the two hole or Santiago Espinal in
the two hole for a long period of time.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
And my question with this would be, at what point
do you have to look and say, well, Genostone's not
getting it done. Now, the depth there is a question,
And we've talked about the depth all off season. They
asked Ginostone to take a pay cut in the offseason. Sure,
he's playing terribly. You're going into a game against a
(19:45):
team that has not produced anything on offense much of
the year. Would this be a game to get someone
anyone else reps at safety?
Speaker 3 (19:55):
Maybe? I mean, when you look the Jets passing off,
it's not very good. Justin Field's benched to Rod Taylor
came in. Aaron Glenn said on Monday, I don't know
who the quarterback is going to be yet, but your
options outside of Geno Stone are Tyson Anderson, PJ Jewles,
That's pretty much it. Dejon Anthony's still on the injured
(20:16):
list on the IR so I don't know that you
really feel comfortable with those guys. But the question could
be asked, what's the difference between going to a PJ.
Jewles and go into Jalen Rivers?
Speaker 4 (20:30):
Right?
Speaker 3 (20:31):
How is there a difference between the two, And maybe
it's you know, the PJ Jewels gives you too much
on special teams or whatever it might be. But I
agree with you like Geno Stone is constantly out of position,
He's a poor tackler, he was bad last year. He
doesn't play well. He's not a very good player. So
(20:51):
at what point, and maybe it's this week, as you mentioned,
do you say, Okay, let's see if anybody else can
give us something back?
Speaker 2 (20:57):
There you need to evaluate in a game setting, and
I don't know that you'll see many offenses this year
that are as ill equipped in the passing game as
the Jets, So do it now, because if not, then
you run the conversation of what we talked about with
the Reds. If you're in the locker room Austin and
you're watching other players get benched, or you're one of
the players that has been benched and you're like, well,
why isn't genostone getting benched? Then you start whispering in
(21:19):
the locker room. That causes issues with the culture that
to me becomes an issue. Everyone needs to be held
at the same level of accountability. Yeah, Now to piggyback
on this, the NFL trade deadline is approaching in November,
and I viewed Thursday night's game as kind of a
(21:42):
you can label it and must when you can label
whatever you want. But if they lose the game to
the Pittsburgh Steelers, I think the conversation going forward would
have been, Okay, are there pieces in place on this
roster that you can move on from and you can
get something in return and start looking to next year.
I think that would have been the common conversation had
you lost the game to the Steelers. But now, based
(22:03):
on what we're seeing in the AFC and not a
lot of teams running away with it, not a lot
of great football being played in the AFC, and the
fact that the Bengals beat the Steelers and now have
the Jets and the Bears, and the Bears are playing better,
but they will probably be favored at home against the
Bears before.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
The bye week.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
Are you are you turning the page into maybe you
look to make additions to this roster or do you
just stand pat.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
You should always be looking to make additions to the roster,
because I don't think you can, on one hand say
we're gonna play the young guys and bench these guys
and do that and that's gonna be our approach to
trying to make the team better, but on the other hand, say,
but we're not gonna go look for somebody at the
trade deadline. If this season is about and has become about,
by as much time as you can until Joe Burrow, well,
(22:53):
then that means by by as much time as you
can in the form of players so that you have
a chance when Burrow gets back. I mean, obviously Kansas
City looks a lot better. Buffalo is still in the conversation,
and the sportsbooks all believe that Baltimore is not that
far off based off their schedule and Lamar Jackson coming back.
(23:13):
But I mean there are reports out there. Ian Rapaport
rap she talked about it on Thursday, double down on
it again that he thinks Burrow can be back for
the last three games. Let's say that's Miami, Arizona Cleveland
starting December twenty first. If that's the case, you should
be doing everything in your power to make this team
(23:36):
viable in the meantime. Maybe that means trade for a
pass rusher. Maybe that means trade for a safety. Maybe
that means go after a tight end to the absence
of Mike GASICKI. I don't know, but we know that
this team has a bad defensive line, a bad offensive line,
and our poor tacklers. How can you, at the bare
minimum improve those things between now and the time Burrow
(23:59):
might get back so that you can make a run
at this thing.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Let's say that Burrow could get back for the Dolphins, Cardinals,
and Browns three opportunities to get wins. You currently, as
the Bengals sit at three wins, so give them six
if they win the last three is the number nine
is the number ten in the AFC. That would get
you into the dance because now you start to count.
(24:25):
You know, at Buffalo without Burrow is going to be
a tough ask. Is the Baltimore game a little different
now based on how we've seen the Ravens, And I
think how the Ravens playing in the next couple weeks
will determine sure what those games look like. Lamar didn't
practice yesterday. Man, you could make a case right now
that Drake may is the best quarterback in the NFL. Yeah,
he's playing like that. The way he's playing. That's a
(24:46):
tough game against the Patriots. You've got to go on
the road against the Steelers. I mean it's not crazy
to say, Austin that the next four if you find
a way to win, could get you in position to
be viable if Burrow can come back. Yeah, you're going
to be favored against the Jets, You'll be favored against
the b You'll be a little dog on the road
to Pittsburgh and you get New England at home.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
I will say this, I don't know that they're gonna
be favored against the Bears. Okay, I hear what you're saying,
but I don't know if I'm convinced on that yet.
But you're right overall the grand scheme of things, You're correct,
It's just to me, it goes back to the division.
They're two to zero in the division. You have Cleveland,
it's gonna be Week eighteen, probably gonna be Shadoor Sanders
(25:26):
or who knows what other quarterback. By that point, you
expect to win that game. So that's three wins in
the division alone. Can you split with Baltimore? Yeah? And
if that's the case, you have a chance to win
the division no matter what happens in the other Steelers game.
And so as far as I'm concerned, that continues to
(25:46):
be the number one goal, which is beat your division opponents.
You know, it's one thing if you lose in the NFC,
if you lose that game to the Bears, or if
you lose that game to the Cardinals, whatever, but can
you take care of business in the AFC against teams
that you're supposed to beat? And I did a whole
segment yesterday about there is none of that for the Bengals.
I don't think that I go into any game expecting
(26:07):
them to win. I don't expect them to beat the
Jets because they have three major flaws that can get
you beat on any given Sunday. Can you improve that
between now and then? If I can see that, surely
Zach Taylor and Duke Tobin can see that. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
I mean they're gonna have to answer questions and Aaron
Glenn is going to I'm sure say, Jamar Chase isn't
gonna get targeted twenty three times. You know what kind
of answers can you come up with? I'm looking forward
to seeing that on Sunday. I'm also looking forward to
continuing this conversation a little bit as it relates to
the holes that you just mentioned on this team. Let's
discuss some of those and if and how they could
(26:42):
be addressed when we come back.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Well.

Now Here's Dan and d Lap.
Speaker 5 (27:34):
You famously convinced your fellow offensive lineman to go sleeveless
in the Freezer Bowl where the wind show was minus
fifty nine degrees? Was it more of a psychological advantage
or a physical one?
Speaker 4 (27:46):
You know, I think it was both in you know,
that's I was thinking that initially was I'm from the east,
you know, I'm from the New England area.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
I've gone through some winners. I know what cold weather's like.
Not like that.
Speaker 4 (27:57):
That was brutality, man, And of course to argers from
the West coast, so they really couldn't go anywhere unless
they flew in early to practice in those kind of conditions, unbelievable.
I mean it was it was survival. I never played
the game of football like that one because when you
hit that field, oh man, it was like you know,
you were falling on a brick, you were falling on concrete.
Speaker 5 (28:19):
For more on the life of Lap, keep it here
on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
Welcome back since e three to sixty ESPN fifteen thirty

Anytime you're feeling good and hungry, it's Skyline time.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
All right.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
I want to pick back up real quick on the
conversation we were just having Austin. You made a mention
as well about you know that no game is a
given because of the glaring holes that this team has,
and I agree, which is crazy that I'm even leaning
this way, because we've talked about Geno Stone and I've
never seen a safety in football in a cover two
(29:05):
formation get as wide as Genostone has been getting. I
don't know how that works. We've also spent a lot
of time all off season and into the season talking
about the offensive line, which is crazy that I'm even
leaning this way. But if I were given the opportunity
to address one position group at the deadline, I think
(29:28):
I would go D line like Trey Hendrickson did not
play on Thursday and man, you want to talk about
a golden opportunity for Shamar Stewart Thursday night football, Trey
Hendrickson's out all eyes on. You do you know Shamar
Stewart's stat line on Thursday night?
Speaker 3 (29:48):
I know it wasn't very good. He didn't have one.
Speaker 2 (29:50):
Pretty quiet didn't have a stat in twenty two snaps.
This pass rush is abysmal. Forty one year old Aaron
Rogers stood in the pocket as long as he wanted.
Aaron Rodgers scrambled more than I've seen Aaron Rodgers scramble
in years to move around and buy time. They have
(30:10):
no pass rush, which doesn't matter who's playing safety if
you can't get and disrupt the quarterback. So as crazy
as it sounds, Austin knowing the holes at the O line,
knowing the glaring needed safety, if I could only address
one position, I think I addressed D line.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
Yeah, I wouldn't. There's no way I could disagree with that.
Like last night or Thursday night, at this point the
time that Rogers had, he comfortably picked them apart. The
Bengals offense was just better. And Mike Tomlin had one
stupid punt that basically gave the Bengals a chance. And
(30:51):
you know you cannot do that against Patrick Mahomes. You
can't do that against Josh Allen. No, can't do that
against Lamar Jackson and Rogers. For many years you would
say the same thing. But I don't know that he
has the best team around him, and their defense is atrocious.
But against teams with good defenses, you can't allow that
to happen. Correct, And so I agree with you something
(31:14):
or someone to put more pressure on the quarterback because
that in and of itself will help your secondary a
little bit. And so you can in that sense kill
two birds with one stone. Which is crazy though because
of how k how about that?
Speaker 2 (31:31):
It's just crazy to think that where the deficiencies are,
that we could still think offensive line. That to me
is crazy, but I think it speaks to how glaring
of an issue that is. Yeah, now that being said,
do you think they do something like that?
Speaker 1 (31:51):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (31:51):
No, I'm not convinced. Like, yeah, they've made trades the
last couple of years, and I've been the one touting
more than anyone else that the Bengals have changed. But
when it comes to this type of aggressive move, we
really haven't seen that. I've said it multiple times. That's
the next step in the evolution for this team is
being aggressive in the pursuit of a championship while in season.
(32:15):
I don't see them doing that, and I would love
to be proven wrong, but I don't have a high
expectation for that.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
So the deadline is November fourth. Between now and then,
they have games against the Jets and Bears, and then
they're on their by coming out against the Steelers. So
if you look at a bye week astin, you could
have a better bye week than the trade deadline because
you could add somebody and then have them up the
speed to start right out of the deadline, right out
of the break. Would it require at minimum two and
(32:45):
zero over the next two to be a legitimate buyer? Yeah,
I mean anything under five hundred the deadline, I think
you're out. But it feels to me like if you
win these next two and we're talking about the uneasy
landscape that is right now, what the AFC, yes, go buy.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
What should happen is you win on Sunday and buy. Yeah,
you don't have to wait, so you be the team
that's first in go get the best guy you can
get and have him for an extra game against the Bears,
and then he gets the bye week, and you know,
you figure it out from that. I mean, if we're
talking about a pass rusher. Yeah, it's not like they
need to come in and they need twelve days to
(33:26):
get the playbook down. Right, Hey, go out there on
third downs, right, get after the quarterback. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
I just again, I I'd rather them do it sooner
rather than later. And if you get a win and
you get back to five hundred, and there are rumblings
that Joe Burrow is on track to make it back
for the last three games. If they're in position, then
by all means, go for it. I also Austin, speaking
of Joe Burrow, I don't think it's a coincidence that
(33:58):
him being on the sideline made this offense look different.
And I don't want to overreact because I I think
Joe Flacco had a ton to do with it. But
Burrow being on the sideline and being a voice for
Flacco when he comes off or handling other things, I
think is understated how important that was.
Speaker 3 (34:19):
Yeah, why do we what's up with the formation of
the quarterbacks on the sideline. Can you speak to this?
I mean, everybody has their spot starter sits at the end.
I said, back up in the middle, guy at the end?
Can can?
Speaker 4 (34:33):
We said?
Speaker 3 (34:33):
Can switch? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (34:34):
Can Browning just move? I don't need Burrow talking over
Browning to get the Flacco. Yeah, because I so. Albert
Breer mentioned, no disrespect, but can we.
Speaker 1 (34:48):
So?
Speaker 2 (34:49):
Albert Breer wrote this up about Burrow's involvement. He said, quote,
uh mentioned in our Thursday column that Flacco and center
Ted Carriss were having lunch film session together. Ted's great,
but there was someone else in there too. When Ted
and I met, Joe went up there and sat with
us and just chimed in. Here's how I would do that,
Here's what I would tell you guys. And it was
one of those things where I would say, Okay, I'm
(35:10):
not going to worry about that, or okay, this is helpful.
You can tell how much Burrow was invested. Yeah, I
think that's huge. Like so, if there's one thing I
can speak speak of Austin, it's the backup quarterback role.
It's not a role where as soon as Flacco gets
off the field, you're braiding him with things. Sure, it
(35:31):
is do you want me to watch anything you know?
Speaker 3 (35:35):
For Flaker?
Speaker 2 (35:35):
You might say, hey, can you keep an eye on
third downs for me what they're doing at the back end,
or you know, it's not Joe Burrow's place as a
backup when Flacco gets off the field to just dice
up everything that just happened. It is more so I'm
here if you want to ask me a question about stuff,
a formation, a play where you look on this, what
(35:59):
you're watching out four on this. But it is also
like I saw there was a point in the game
where Burrow was over there talking to Andre Yoshibash. That's
important too, sure for Burrow not Floco to go over
there and say, hey, here's what's going on. Make sure
you're ready for this, and then Joe can go and
talk to Flacco again.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
Yeah. And a perfect example is that thirty seven yard
completion that Yoshibash had and Flacco said after the game,
we knew at some point they were going to bracket
Tea and Jamar and when they did, we had to
be able to hit it. And it could be as
simple as Joe goes up to Yoshi and says, listen,
they're going to go to this soon or this is
what it's going to look like. Here's how Joe's thinking.
(36:38):
He wants to put that ball Bubba whatever it is,
and bang they hit that big completion to keep him
in the game.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
Yeah, I just I think there is there's no coincidence
that there is value with Joe Burrow being on the
sidelines and being in the meetings.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
His words carry a little bit more weight correct, correct,
His words carry a little bit more weight to everybody,
not just the other quarter of And I also think
he's been around especially you know, obviously not when they
go to Green Bay and stuff like that, but he
has been around and in the facility.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
Ye know that, Yes, but to be you know, as
Flacco said, I'm sitting there watching film with Ted and
Joe wanted to be in there. That's important because he
doesn't have to be doing that, but the stay connected
and to try to offer any input. Like I said,
he's not in there to talk on every play.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
He's in there.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
If if Flacco has a question to say, this is
how I would do it. But this is what I'm
looking at here. I just wish they would move when
they sit on the bench. What are we doing no
offense to Jake Browning. I don't think there's a lot
that Browning can tell Flacco when he comes off the field.
Just let Joe sit there. Yeah, unbelievable. Let's take a
(37:48):
little bit away from what Zach Taylor had to say yesterday.
We'll discuss that when we come back on this the
Home of the Bengals ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, Cincinnati.
Speaker 1 (37:59):
To make us.
Speaker 4 (38:01):
Old camp two outs, top of the nine, team seven
of the a l c s.
Speaker 3 (38:07):
Hop inch, payoff pitch, he goss, win them Baecks, Big Blues, Eggs,
win them Bannets. They're going to the World Series. It's
(38:30):
so good. We must be.
Speaker 4 (38:32):
Dreaming Blue Jays.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
No, then none moment than Ourners, and then they will
take God the l A Doctors.
Speaker 3 (38:53):
How about that? I got goosebumps. What a call, What
a moment that would be to listen to for your
team one time? I got goosebumps, man Like, Goosebump's just
thinking about it. That was pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (39:03):
Might hear something you think we'll hear some of that
from west Miller tomorrow. Okay, Bump's just thinking about it.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
Goosebumps, just thinking about Seana By by the way, shooting triples,
UC basketball all time Big Ten exhibition game dominance last
year over Ohio State. This year, you guys owned in
exhibition games. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
That call was our wind Shuler Call of the day,
brought to you by wind Schuler's Delicious Cheese Spreads. Austin,
don't ask why taste why any of the four fantastic flavors,
whether it's football get togethers, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, anything
in between. Make Win Schulers a part of your next
get together. Zach Taylor spoke to members of the media yesterday. Now, Austin,
(39:48):
he's also speaking tomorrow, right, so we don't need to
just play fifteen minutes of Zach Taylor speaking today and
then hear from him tomorrow again. We're gonna hear from
Scott Saderfield later in the show. We'll have some West
Miller audio. We're gonna talk did Joe danaum in in
just a few minutes? Were there any big takeaways well
from yesterday's Zach Taylor Prescott. I watched the whole thing,
and Zach kept it short. It was only nine minutes,
(40:10):
which you know, coming off of many buye I get it.
Here were the big takeaways that I had. Number One,
Trey Hendrickson is day to day, still dealing with that
back and hip injury.
Speaker 3 (40:21):
Okay. The belief is that the conference is wide open
and there are a lot of good teams, but the
Bengals feel like they're right there in it, and that
affects decision making. The record of the Jets is not
their focus, or the Bengals record is not their focus.
Don't care about being three and four, don't care about
getting four and four. Just care about winning this week.
(40:43):
Win in the day. Okay, this is a much more
normal week for Joe Flacco, and instead of cramming and
worrying about all this stuff, you have stuff to build
off of. Not a surprise there, he said, Playing with
the lead opened up the entire run game. I would
like your explanation for that. What does he mean by
(41:06):
when you're playing with the lead, you have the entire
call sheoot in front of you, and it opens up
the run game.
Speaker 2 (41:11):
Explain that, Well, when you're playing from behind a lot
of times, you become one dimensional. Sure, right, so a
team can pin their ears back a little bit easier
to get after the quarterback teams don't respect the run
as much. When you're playing from ahead, clearly everything is open.
Play action, run the ball, under center runs, shotgun runs.
(41:31):
It just opens everything up for an offense and for
a defense. It makes it tough because you're not forcing
a team to be one dimensional. When you're down, you know,
a score, two scores, you know, you get into that
double digit deficit. You have banned in the running game anyway,
and that just plays right into what a defense wants
to do. So when you're playing even or when you're
(41:53):
playing with the lead, everything's on the table and you
can be a little bit more creative. You can mow
outside zone, inside zone, play action, pass runs, from gun,
throws from under center. You get to mix everything up,
and it just keeps a defense on their heels.
Speaker 3 (42:08):
More final point that I had from the Zach Taylor
press conference was that the Jets are not a winless
team on tape. Oh So, anybody, anybody in the building
who thinks that the Jets are an easy win or
somebody that the Bengals are just going to walk all
over that's concerning to Zach Taylor because that means they
(42:28):
haven't watched the tape. Yes, okay, if you watch the
tape and you think that this team's zero and seven,
you ain't been watching a tape, is what Zach Taylor's taking. Okay,
I'll buy it. I mean I get while you do it,
so I'll buy it. Okay.
Speaker 2 (42:43):
The Jets on the year two point loss to the
Steelers thirty four to thirty two. They got blown out
by the Bills. They only lost to Tampa by two.
Dolphins beat him, Cowboys boat raced him. They had that
tough loss to Denver thirteen to eleven, and then just
lost to the Panthers thirteen to six. Has obviously disappeared
for the New York Jets. There was one other thing
in there you talked about Austin when when talking about
(43:05):
the AFC as a whole, how many as we sit
here today, I don't want to talk about playoff teams?
Speaker 3 (43:12):
How many? How many teams in the AFC do you
view right now as a Super Bowl contender?
Speaker 2 (43:17):
Teams in the AFC? Yep, you think one legitimately can
win a Super Bowl? Two three, So I would guess
you put Buffalo in Kansas City in there. Yes, who's
the third team, the Indianapolis Golts. Okay, they convinced me
this week. Okay, they convinced me that they are.
Speaker 3 (43:39):
I can be bought into that. They have a run game,
and they have a defense, and they protect their quarterback
and they have invested on that defensive line. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (43:49):
I don't know what to make about the Chargers. I'm
not there with the Broncos. I don't think Jacksonville has
stay in power. No one in the AFC North right
now gives me super Bowl contender vibes. And I think
the Patriots are trending that way, but I don't think
they're there yet. Can the Bengals win the Super Bowl
right now?
Speaker 3 (44:07):
No? No, no, no? Can they Can they win the
Super Bowl if they make a couple moves? Yeah, probably,
maybe potentially, Yeah, it becomes a lot more realistic. Correct,
as they're constructed now, They're not realistic right now. As
they're constructed now, they what if they're only what if
they Okay, let's say that they are seven and seven
(44:29):
and Burrow comes back for the final three games? Are
they a super Bowl contender? Yes? Okay, same question, NFC.
Speaker 1 (44:38):
I have.
Speaker 3 (44:40):
The Rams and the Lions. Okay, Tampa's not in there
for you, No, not right now? Not with the injuries.
Packer's not in there for you. No, Eagle's not in there. No, Okay,
I think there are more. I think there are more
contending teams in the NFC than the AFC. Yes, I
agree with that. It's La and Detroit and then a
sizeable gap. Okay, you get to that next group.
Speaker 2 (45:01):
For me, Okay, it's crazy because green Bay started the
season looked like the clear cut favorites.
Speaker 3 (45:06):
They've just not looked as sharp.
Speaker 2 (45:08):
They Philly just feels like they're not clicking at all,
and yet they're still winning football games.
Speaker 3 (45:13):
My cousin is a big Packer fan and a big
fan of since he three to sixty shout out. So
I asked him, you know, to ask about the Packers,
and he says, sometimes they have an elite defense. The
rest of the time they're clueless. That's not what you
want to be dispeople, the people in Green Bay, and
I got to speak with these people. They don't love
(45:33):
Matt Lafleur. Yea, everything's a walk in the park. They
played down to their opponents. There's not enough urgency. And
Jordan Love, as you and I have talked about many times,
can't make up his mind whether or not. He's a
great quarterback. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (45:48):
They, I mean they didn't show well in the second
half against the Bengals. They tied the Cowboys, they lost
to the Browns, and had to come from behind to
beat the Cardinals this weekend. Correct, let's take a break.
Fox nineteen Zone Joe Daniman stands by to join us next. Yet,
