Scott Saderfield audio Scott Saderfield and in the next couple
minutes we'll speak in Clifton about their upcoming matchup. Big
noon kickoff happening Saturday afternoon. That will tie over to

(01:10):
Saturday night, an eight pm start for the Bearcats against
the BYU Cougar's. You'll hear from head coach Scott Saderfield.
We've got some audio that we've picked out from what
Zach Taylor had to say in his Monday afternoon press
conference yesterday. We'll talk all things Bengals. We'll talk from
Trey Hendrickson, We'll talk some Cam Taylor Britt, perhaps from

(01:32):
Jermaine Burton, and of course we will talk more Jamar
Chase as well. I think it's come to a point
where we at least have to have a discussion about
what's going on with Hunter Green. And when I say
what's going on with Hunter Green, I mean the I

(01:54):
would say whispers, the rumblings that there are some within
the organization that may be unhappy with Hunter Green. That
was the topic of conversation on a very recent article
with the Cincinnati Reds On Sports Illustrated, Greg Kufner wrote
an article some member of the Reds organization may be
unhappy with Hunter Green, goes on to talk about Hunter

(02:16):
Green trade Rumors continue to swirl. Would the Reds trade him?
We'll discuss that at some point this afternoon. Also tonight,
college basketball slate is a good one. Xavier is going
to play host to Old Dominion at the Centas Center.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Louisville.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
U See's opponent on Friday night is up to number
six in the college basketball rankings, and we have a
pair of top twenty five matchups tonight. Duke takes on
Kansas and the twelfth rank Kentucky Wildcats take on Tom
Izzo's Michigan State Spartans. We will talk all things college
basketball as well. Let's get you up to speak with

(02:57):
everything else going on in the sports world, and we'll
take your phone calls along the way. Five one, three, seven, four, nine,
fifteen thirty Monday Night Football. Last night, Austin, Monday Night Football.
It was an impressive one for the Dallas Cowboys. Is
there a correlation that Logan Wilson comes to the Cowboys

(03:17):
and all of a sudden that defense looked okay?

Speaker 4 (03:20):
I don't know that Logan Wilson is the correlation, but
Quinn Williams looked pretty damn good.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Williams wasn't bad.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
The Raiders also continue to have struggles with their offensive line,
and I saw a little bit of that last night
as well. Dak Prescott looked good last night. Dak Prescott
looked George Pickens looked good last night. Now, George Pickens
and Ceedee Lamb both didn't participate in this opening drive
for the Cowboys, and what appeared to be a coach's
decision slash disciplinary something. Brian Schottenheimer was then pretty buddy

(03:52):
buddy with him on the sideline after that. So not
sure what to make of that. But the Cowboys, you know,
they look better, and they have a big game coming
up against Philadelphia team They're able to beat Philadelphia and
then right back in it. You know, I don't think
it's crazy to think that with a marginally better defense,
the Dallas Cowboys could make some noise.

Speaker 5 (04:13):
In the NF.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
They added Quinn Williams, they added Logan Wilson. They also
the George Pickens move makes a lot more. George Pickens
is playing extremely well. That seems to be a good
fit alongside Ceed Lamb, Jake Ferguson. That's a good offense.
That is a good offense in Dallas. They round off
the uh what is it? Week eleven of the NFL

(04:35):
slate last night with a big win over the Las
Vegas Raiders, who by the way, fall to two and
eight on the season. I expected a little more from
the Raiders, expected a little more from Pete Carroll.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
Especially when you consider Week one they beat the New
England Patriots in New England. Yeah, kind of hard to believe.

Speaker 6 (04:54):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
How about this speaking hard to believe? We keep having
these NFL plays is getting their homes broken into.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
What's up with this?

Speaker 6 (05:04):
It's the same.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Situation we've been dealing with for a long time. Shaud
Door Sanders had his home broken into during his NFL debut.
In the last year or so, burglaries have taken place
at the homes of Luka Doncik, Joe Burrow, Pat Mahomes,
Travis Kelcey, Shador Sanders.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
We'd be better with this, isn't there.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
I want to say there was another NBA guy too,
maybe a couple of NBA guys. It's just the unfortunate
reality of the world in which we live. When people
know where you're gonna be and you're gonna be away,
and if you do anything to make your address or
your whereabouts known, yeah, you become a target for some
of these people.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
True, there is a new coach in place in college football,
James Franklin has agreed to become the new head coach
of the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
You can't lose any big games if you don't play
in any big games.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
Moiger asked me yesterday when we talked about this news
a little bit. Do you think the sports world will
come together and rejoice when he loses games at Virginia
Tech like the sports world did when he lost games
at Penn State.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
No, because Virginia Tech is irrelevant. Penn State was relevant
because of the years of Joe Paterno, and then they
became a punching bag, and deservedly so for the Paterno
and Jerry Sandusky situation where people rooted against them and
wanted that program to fail. And so when they rose

(06:37):
back to national prominence, and there was always this this
arrogance about Penn State that I perceived that they thought
they were a little bit bigger and better and more
important than they really were. Sure, and so teams would
revel in the losses of Penn State, and yeah, it was.
It was a beautiful day. I think James Franklin's a

(06:57):
good guy. I just never really rooted.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
For him to win.

Speaker 4 (07:01):
Sure, And I think a lot of people feel that
way about Penn State because of their past crimes. Yeah,
how about And I hope that's how people feel. And
I know that's how people feel about Ohio State. People
think they're arrogant, root against them, want them to lose.
Bama is that same way, Michigan is that same way.
It's that's you know, one of the foundational pieces of
college football is hate watching against other people.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
It is it is. How about this?

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Speaking of the college football coaching carousel, Old Miss has
handed Lane Kiffen an ultimatum. Oh boy, Now he is
a rumored candidate of LSU and Florida openings, and so
Old Miss came back and said, here you go, buddy,
You're gonna have to decide on your future by November
twenty eighth for the Egg Bowl. Do you do you

(07:47):
agree with this from Old Miss? Because here's a team
at Old Miss. They are in the thick of the
college football playoff race, They're trying to play for a
national title, and yet Lane Kiffin is openly being courted
by touple schools right now. Do you agree with Old
Miss coming in and saying, hey, We're gonna give you
an ultimatum here, you gotta let us know by this date.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
Yeah, this is one of the best seasons in ole
Miss football. Lane Kiffin is one of the highest paid
coaches in college football. He's obviously done a lot of
good things here, and it's embarrassing for them, insulting for them,
insulting for the players on the team to have Lane
Kiffin gallivanting around to other SEC schools in the midst

(08:32):
of a season in which you're expected to go to
the college football Playoff and compete for a national championship.
Old Miss has treated Lane Kiffin really well, treated his
family really well, paid him handsomely. So they have the
right to say, hey, man, you have a month to
figure this out, because we got to get a jump
start on what we're gonna do if you decide to leave,

(08:54):
and we're not going to be dealing with this mess
in the postseason.

Speaker 5 (08:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
And I think it's kind of similar to we're right
around the time where the portal opens up, right, yes,
so makes other players have to make that decision, and
other players have already entered the portal, So it's kind
of aligning with that. It's like Okay, we need to
figure out what our coach is going to do. Yeah,
a local wise, hope, I hope he doesn't leave. I too,
it'll be good for college football to have him stay.

(09:20):
I think it would be obviously, like it's entertaining if
he goes somewhere else. But I've been enamored by his
role in the success of Old Miss. I think he's
a fascinating end. It's also very open. He's brought a
level of relevance to Old Miss that maybe they haven't
had in a while. I think it would be fun

(09:41):
if he was the head coach of the New York Giants,
but I don't think that's going to happen. But I
think it's totally fair for Old Miss to say, hey man,
figure it out.

Speaker 3 (09:51):
A couple other injury notes, Justice Haynes, the running back
for Michigan, is likely out for the rest of the
regular season, which means that at Cincinnati and Mohler product
Jordan Marshall is in the top running back slot now.
He moved into that role, but left Saturday's game against
Northwestern with the shoulder injury. The X rayce came back clean,
so he's day to day, but that would mean that

(10:13):
Mohler's Jordan Marshall would now be the lead back for
the Michigan Wolverines. And speaking of injury news, Tom Pella
Sero reporting earlier today that Aaron Rodgers has underwent further
test that confirmed he won't need surgery on his fractured
left wrist. Rogers is pushing to play Sunday at Chicago,
but doctors must clear him and the status is still
to be determined.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
I like Aaron Rodgers. I like the rivalry that he
has with the Chicago Bears. I would not be rooting
for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but I would like to see
him play Chicago in Chicago, maybe the last time. Yeah,
I would be interested to see that. I hope that
he is able to play, and also I don't know

(10:55):
that he gives them the best chance to win, So
this part, I don't know. It might actually be, you know,
both those things being a positive.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
By the way, you mentioned high school football, you mentioned Mohler.
Have you seen this grassroots campaign continuing to garner strength
led by one of our own rocky boymen. Yeah, try
to get this game between Seinex and Elder to be
played at pay Corp Stadium.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
Oh HSAA, figure it out. That's not a bright organization.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Listen, and what we're learning as well, like the tickets
went on sale like during school hours, so a lot
of I'm hearing a lot of the students missed out
on getting tickets as well because it's sold out an
under an hour, so now students aren't able to get
their tickets. Families have been struggling to get their tickets.
According to Rocky Boyman, folks that he's talked to at
the Bengals and Hamilton County are on board to put

(11:45):
it at pay Corps. He says, give the fans an
opportunity to witness an epic game, lots more money made,
everybody wins.

Speaker 4 (11:51):
Doesn't seem like the OHSAA is going to budge on this,
which is again not a surprise that organization is.

Speaker 3 (11:59):
And we did find out more or that there is
something along the lines of recruiting that prevented from being
at Knippert which is another stupid rule.

Speaker 4 (12:06):
Agree because there are no rules in college football. Non,
why does it matter if there are games being played there? Like,
it's just it's Scott Sanderfield was at the same next
game last week. Yep, he was on the sideline's Okay,
what's the difference.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
I don't understand.

Speaker 4 (12:26):
It's not like if that game, especially now with the
Shakeley Athletic Center that you see has that's where football is.
Their operations are all in there, correct, It's not like
the locker room or locker rooms at Nippert Stadium or
they're using the facility or everything. That's a huge recruiting advantage.
I don't understand that at all. Also, most of those

(12:47):
kids have been a Nippert at one point in their life.
I don't understand.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
Yeah, taking away from the kids more than anything, for
a chance to play a really cool a really cool atmosphere.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
It's all about the game.

Speaker 3 (12:58):
I hope something changes. I don't see it changing because
I already Tuesday operates.

Speaker 7 (13:05):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (13:05):
The Major League Baseball Hall of Fame ballot was released yesterday.
Cole Hamils, Ryan Bron Matt Kemp among twelve newcomers on
the Hall of Fame ballot, and Carlos Beltron heads fifteen
holdovers after falling nineteen votes shy in twenty twenty five.
Any of these names do anything for you, Howie Kendrick,

(13:26):
Daniel Murphy, Rick Porcello, Shin Shu Chew Shin, Sue Chew,
Edwin En Carnacion, Geo Gonzalez, Alex Gordon, Nick Markakis, Hunter Pence, anyone, anyone.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
I've looked at this. I've been looking at this list.

Speaker 4 (13:43):
I don't know that there's a lot on there, Yeah,
that I consider Hall of famer.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
I think a Rod and many are Ryan Bron.

Speaker 4 (13:50):
Where do you stand on No, Ryan Bron. I don't
like Ryan Bron now. I was about to say Ryan
Bron cheated, which he did, min Sooad Manny and Alex Uh,
what do you like? How do you feel about the
steroid guys?

Speaker 2 (14:02):
Put him in? Yeah, put him in.

Speaker 4 (14:05):
I do think it's an important chapter in baseball's history.
I also thought in his prime, Carlos Beltron was a dog.
I think of this list that I'm looking at, I
think Carlos Beltron, Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez. I think you
can make the case for Andrew Jones, Cole Hamil's, maybe
Jimmy Rollins four time. Other than that, I don't know

(14:27):
if there's if those other guys are Hall of Famers.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
Hamils was a four time All Star, three four three
E R a MVP of the two thousand and eight
NL Championship Series won a World Series. I could see
maybe that, but the other's not so much. I would
have to look at the numbers on David Wright. I
feel like his numbers Captain America might surprise me. Captain

(14:50):
America Shinzu Chu should be in for his one season
with the Reds unbelievable season. Historical says that might be
enough to get him into the Reds Hall of Fame.
I'd think so. Josh Hamilton, Josh Hamilton's runner shoind Sue Chew.

Speaker 4 (15:04):
I remember it was it opening day when Hamilton came
in as a defensive replacement late in the game, and
you would have thought that the World Series was happening
when he made his return to baseball at the Reds.

Speaker 3 (15:16):
Yes, good for him. I like the story of Josh Hamilton.
Let's take a break, let's come back, Let's get into
the thick of it. We'll take some phone calls along
the way. Five, one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty.
Let's react to a little bit of what Zach Taylor
had to say yesterday. We'll do that when we return.
ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports station thanks to Skyline Chili.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
Minattie brought to you by Postman Law on ESPN fifteen thirty,
the official home of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
All right, welcome back Football NATI since he three to
sixty thanks to Skyline Chili. We'll get to your phone
calls in the next segment. For now, let's react a
little bit to what Zach Taylor had to say yesterday Austin.
There was an interaction with our guy Mike Petralia that
a lot of people have taken note of. You see
the video surfacing in a lot of different places.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
Let's play the clip.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
This is our own version of Thursday's Read and React,
just a little different of what Zach Taylor had to
say yesterday. Let's play the interaction between Mike Petraley and
Zach Taylor.

Speaker 8 (16:18):
Zack, if you had conversations with Jamar about what happened.

Speaker 6 (16:21):
Yesterday in Pittsburgh, I have to myself you.

Speaker 8 (16:23):
Are you concerned about the image of the organization really
unlick criticism nationally And I'm just curious what the conversations
are like internally that you have all the time with
Mike and Katie and Troy on on matters like that.

Speaker 9 (16:40):
Well, first of all, I've always been impressed with how
Jama has handled himself because he is in a lot
of these situations where he's got a target as a
test top player. He gets a lot of respect that way,
and so guys try to do a lot of things
to get his attention and get him off his game.
And I've always thought it was unbelievable Always handled himself
in some really high pressure emotional decisions. Obviously, what happened

(17:04):
just crossed my line. We can't have that, and I
know he'll own up to that. But beyond that, I've
I've always had up here and praise Jamorrow because he's
he's one of the best leaders we've got. The way
he goes about everything, he plays with the tumbled emotion,
he plays with a ton of leadership. Our guys respond
to that, and I've always appreciated Always handled himself.

Speaker 7 (17:22):
I guess the reason I ask you is because you're
really the only one you have to talk to a
new organization that can reflect how the organization feels after
a really unfortunate, ugly moment like yesterday.

Speaker 6 (17:34):
Yeah, and how do you feel? How do they feel?

Speaker 10 (17:37):
Well?

Speaker 9 (17:38):
Again, I just Jamar is one of my favorite Probably
love how this guy handles everything that he's been a
part of. So making one mistake doesn't disregard everything this
guy's done that's been positive for us.

Speaker 6 (17:50):
And so I think that's what you're asking. I really
don't know what you're asking.

Speaker 9 (17:53):
But again, I can't say enough positive things about Jamar
and think about the amount of situations people tried to
put him in in the way that he's always responded.
We're not all perfect. We're going to make a mistake
here and there. But I stand by Jamara, and I
know is an emotional situation. I know there's a lot
of things going on there that lead to things like that,

(18:14):
and again, we'll just continue to move forward.

Speaker 3 (18:19):
So I see what's happening here, and I'll give Mike
Petralli your credit because he's asking what everyone's been talking about.
And I think Zach new to Austin it wasn't about
Jamar Chase, and I thought what Jamar Chase said multiple
times about Jamar Chase was very impressive and resounding to
how he feels and how so many feel about Jamar Chase.

(18:40):
The side of it, though, that Trags is trying to
get out. I believe is that we don't get to
hear from anyone else in the organization, didn't get to
hear during the bye week. Now this incident happens, there's
a perception there are people talking about the Cincinnati Bengals,
but we don't get to hear from anyone else. So
what are those other folks talking about? What are they saying?
Zach knows what's happening. I just don't think Zach can

(19:01):
talk about what's happening. But I do appreciate the question
for Mike Petralia.

Speaker 4 (19:05):
Yeah, I think anytime you can try to get some
sort of understanding about what the front office and ownership
is thinking or there's a major reacting, then I think
we should always search for that. We often only see
it in statements when a player is released or traded
or something along those lines. Now I understand Traggs is

(19:28):
asking that question knowing that Zach Taylor's not going to
speak on behalf of Duke or Mike or Katie or Troy.
He's never done that, he never will do that. But
I do think it's a fair question to say, what
have the internal conversation's been like? Considering the way that
the organization is currently being viewed because the Bengals are
in the eye of the national media. They have been

(19:50):
for the last several months with the Higgins contract and
Chase and Hendrickson and all of it. Injury and Yeah,
this belief now by some We talked about it a
couple weeks ago that the Bengals could soon be facing
trade demands from Joe Burrow. We all think that's bs,
but there is a curiosity to know what do those
people think and how are they reacting to it.

Speaker 5 (20:13):
Now.

Speaker 4 (20:13):
I don't know that he's ever going to get that answer.
I appreciate that he asked the question. I know Zach
completely dodged it, and Zach knows exactly what he's asking. However,
I will say this, I also I've listened to that
answer probably four or five times now. I do think
there's a possibility that Zach's answer is reflective of what
they would say. We've talked a lot about, you know,

(20:35):
Mike Brown and the Brown family being willing to give
second chances. Guys like Chris Henry, guys like vontez Perfect,
guys like pac Man Jones that have gotten multiple opportunities
over and over and over again, and I think they
probably view it the same way Zach articulated it, which
is because Jamar Chase made one mistake doesn't warrant us

(20:59):
reacting overreacting to it. He understands he's been about all
the right things. He screwed up one time. That doesn't
mean that he should be crucified for it. And maybe
that's what I thought.

Speaker 3 (21:09):
I think I thought it was more of, you know,
just the season and how it's unfolded. We don't get
a chance to talk or hear from anyone, and it
is Zach up there a lot of times, and it
was him again yesterday having to answer to those questions.

Speaker 4 (21:22):
I've been thinking about this too, because you know, well
we can get to it at the end of this segment,
I thought, Zach on the tackling, Yes, Zach, we talked a.

Speaker 6 (21:35):
Lot about tackling here this year. How concerned you when.

Speaker 4 (21:38):
You watch yesterday's tape and some of the effort in
some of the tackles and some of the that aspect
of it beyond anything else.

Speaker 6 (21:46):
Yeah, I do.

Speaker 9 (21:47):
I understand some of it looks looks bad. You can't
run from that. And the hard part was there were
some situations. We were great on first and second down.
We got him into the situations we wanted, you know, second, long,
third and long, and then you just got to get
a guy down in space, and we didn't do a
good enough job of that.

Speaker 6 (22:03):
So I can't say a lot more about it.

Speaker 9 (22:05):
We've we've talked about it, We talked about it industry,
we work on it. We do every technique we can
possibly do in the game. We just gotta we got
to let it happen, and it hasn't happened on a
consistent basis. There were some examples just to that were
really good, you know, some that maybe hadn't shown up
as much, but I thought there were some really good ones.
One from JV stands up on the Perimeter, Jordan Battle,
dax Hill came Table, Britt fitting up, you know, pin

(22:27):
in the hips. So there were some that I thought
were really good and then some obviously where we've got
to be better to get us off the field on
some critical moments.

Speaker 2 (22:34):
And said, you know, you don't anticipate any personality tackling.
Why why why is that.

Speaker 6 (22:39):
Not an answer? Well, tackling is not the only thing
we have to factor in.

Speaker 9 (22:42):
We have to factor in knowledge of the defense and
ability to get lined up and play coverages and respond
to the run game.

Speaker 6 (22:48):
And so there's more than just tackling.

Speaker 9 (22:50):
It's frustrating when tackling is an issue, but there's a
lot more that goes into whether player players not. We
factor in everything, and we talk about these things every
week on whether we want to make a personal.

Speaker 6 (22:59):
Decision or not.

Speaker 9 (23:00):
But there's just more that's got a factor into it
than one element of his game. And there are times,
I'm sure there's been times where there's been one element
that's been a deciding factor on whether guys players or not.
But I think in some of these cases that you're
probably bringing up, there's more to it that plays into it,
and we have to make a sound decision. We're not
afraid to make a decision if we think that there's
a better way to approach it. If we don't know

(23:21):
that there's a better way to necessarily approach something, then
we'll keep trying to fix the ones with the guys
we got when it comes to all.

Speaker 3 (23:27):
Right, so very I think this is Zach going in
a little more detail. He was asked after the game
about personnel changes. He shot it down immediately. This is
just peeling back the curtain a little bit into It's
more than just can we substitute a guy in that
can tackle better? It's do they fit in the system?
Do they know their responsibility to the other calls their checks?
Are they getting everyone else lined up? Are they lined
up correctly? There's a lot that goes into it, and

(23:48):
a lot of tackling is effort, but the end of
the day, that means the effort hasn't been good enough.
Because the tackling hasn't been good enough, this is a
terrible tackling team at this point. Are we passed the
whole Well, it's more than that. Are we ready to
start seeing other guys get opportunities for this defense?

Speaker 5 (24:06):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (24:06):
I think this could be the point in which it changes,
because now the season is over, Like there really is
no path unless you went out and get a lot
of help, and nobody expects that to happen. But basically,
to me, that translation was PJ. Jewles and Tyson Anderson
and those guys they don't know the playbook well enough.

(24:26):
They don't know where to get lined up. We don't
have faith in their ability to understand the defense. So
we aren't playing them, and so now number one, that's
an indictment on them. That's how I perceived that message.
And number two, now that we've reached the point where
the season is basically over, are you willing to take
more chances with those guys? And I also appreciated that

(24:47):
he acknowledged it looks bad, the effort looks bad, and
there's only so much we can do about that.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
Yeah, there's only so many players on the roster. There's
only so many guys you can get in there. Lastly,
on the the criticism around what's going on with this team.

Speaker 4 (25:04):
Zach, do you get a sense of the frustration around
the city from fans kind of as the season kind
of goes the way it does in the last couple
of years, how they've went, you get a sense of
kind of frustration that that kind of.

Speaker 9 (25:14):
I'm not oblivious. I have to isolate myself. I have
to that's the only way I can function. And I
think that's understandable. But you also, again, it's no one
puts more pressure on us than I do on myself
to get it right.

Speaker 6 (25:27):
And so.

Speaker 9 (25:29):
I'm not oblivious to frustration. And I know what our
record is and so that would have lead to that,
And I don't blame anybody for feeling that way. It's
it's our job as a as an NFL team to
go find wins and create energy and joy in this
fan base and our organization, in our locker room, coaching staff.

Speaker 6 (25:45):
Winning.

Speaker 9 (25:46):
Winning helps everybody do their job the next day, the
next week, and I want nothing more than that. And
I know if we can string together some wins, we'll
start to build build, build some some optimism. But but
first we've got to show a step in the right direction.

Speaker 6 (26:02):
I'm doing that. So until we do that, I understand
how difficult it is, all.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
Right, I just that to me is important because it's
at least a coach now that's looking this square in
the eye of Yeah. I understand what's going on. I
understand the voices that are out there. I understand the
angst among fans, and yes, we have to win games.
I think there's an emphasis on that now. It does
put more pressure on to win, but at least he's

(26:27):
not up there acting completely blind to the fact of
the criticism that is now surrounding this organization.

Speaker 4 (26:33):
I have to isolate myself. That's the only way I
can function This to me goes back to the first
answer and the first question about how we don't hear
from anyone else.

Speaker 2 (26:45):
We don't hear from Duke Tobin. Now I can.

Speaker 4 (26:49):
I've watched enough of Zach Taylor and seen him and
been around him and heard enough to feel pretty confident
in the character and the person that is Zach Taylor.
I believe he's a good man. I think he's a
good leader. I think he's a good football coach. I've
said that many times, and I believe more than anything,
he's a stand up, high character individual. When I see

(27:11):
that guys like Duke Tobin don't speak, that then leads
me to question their character. I don't know anything about
Duke Tobin, don't know anything about I'd literally know nothing
about that guy other than who his father is and
what his job has been over the last twenty years.
And if it were me in that situation, if I

(27:31):
were in the shoes of Duke Tobin, and this guy
that I work with every single day has to answer
for my transgressions and is having to isolate himself and
I'm sure in ways his family so that he can function.
And I don't do anything to put myself out there
to say hey, here, I'll talk, I'll explain, here's my

(27:54):
side of things, here's what we're going through as an organization.
That to me is a reflection of poor character. I
don't know him. I don't know what his character's like,
know nothing about Duke Tobin. He's done nothing to really
prove to me that he is this real good stand
up guy. But to me, that's like an example of
being a bad teammate. Duke Tobin not not willing to

(28:14):
raise his hand and say, hey, let me answer some
of these tough I'm responsible for this as well. And
you know that just the more I think about it,
the more it doesn't sit right with me. And maybe
my opinion would be different if I heard from Duke frequently.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
I don't know, especially when things go as poorly as
they have.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
And you know, you could could be listening to this
and saying, well, you should hold the owners to the
same standard, and to an extent I do. However, I
will say there's not a lot of owners across the
NFL to talk. That's not that common. But players, player
personnel directors, gms, those people are talking very frequently.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
Especially on a bye week, especially when things are going
the way in which it has. Someone has to stand
up there and help Zach Taylor. It's hard because I
listened that and I genuinely do think Zach Taylor is
a great person, and I think Zach Taylor has done
good things here. I don't allow that to change the
fact that I don't think he should be the head

(29:11):
coach after this season.

Speaker 2 (29:13):
Sure, that's fair, but it's.

Speaker 3 (29:15):
Almost like he's he's doing this with one hand tied
behind his back.

Speaker 2 (29:19):
Yeah, And that's the hard part.

Speaker 3 (29:20):
That's what I think pulls at you a little bit
because it's not a fair situation what he's being asked
to do.

Speaker 4 (29:26):
And that's also what makes firing him complicated, because, yeah,
you have a patient ownership group, you have an elite quarterback,
and you have finances that you're able to spend moving
forward when it comes to the cap, the salary cap
that make the job attractive. But you are a punching

(29:47):
bag for the organization. No one has your back in
the media, nobody. Yeah, and you are dealing with a
style of business that some would say requires you to
have one hand tied behind your back. And so if
that's the case, are you ever going to be able
to get the best candidate to coach this team.

Speaker 2 (30:10):
Yeah, and the affair, and that's what.

Speaker 4 (30:12):
Makes a question, that's what makes it difficult about to me,
at least, flip flopping on whether Zach should be fired
or not.

Speaker 3 (30:18):
Yeah, we'll take a break, we'll come back. We'll hear
from you. Five one, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty
is this just gets rolling Cinty three to sixty on
the Home of the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 2 (30:29):
Thanks to Skyline Chile.

Speaker 1 (30:30):
You've been listening to Football in the NATI on ESPN
fifteen thirty, the official home of the Cincinnati Bengals. Mike
Hot Game on Detok Sports like never before. Loeger today
at three pm on ESPN fifteen.

Speaker 2 (30:52):
Thirty for more information about contests. Welcome back.

Speaker 3 (31:04):
Since he three to sixty rolled along on a Tuesday
afternoon ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Let's take some
phone calls for the first time this afternoon. Doc is
calling in.

Speaker 2 (31:13):
What's up? Doc?

Speaker 10 (31:15):
Hey? First of all, Tony, I'm glad you're back, and
you might remember me. I first saw you when you
were twenty inches long.

Speaker 2 (31:22):
That might give you a yes, yes, how are you?

Speaker 10 (31:26):
I'm some fine getting holds hell, but it's still there.
I'll hear you two questions with quarterbacks quickly and your
and your opinion.

Speaker 1 (31:34):
Uh.

Speaker 10 (31:35):
First one is Joe Burrow rumors which keep you know,
which are not probably real, But if you got four
or five first round draft choices for him, would you
take it? And the second one is Brandon Soresby. The
sites on Chad's website and stuff, a lot of people
think they need to hold on to him at all costs,

(31:55):
and uh break the bank for him. And I think
they're a fair number of coquarterbacks. I'd like to keep him,
but I think there are current number of quarterbacks out
there that there that we could find it would be
pretty much equal. And I think we need to spend
their money in the defense of secondary in mind receiver rooms.
So it's fun to know what your opinions are.

Speaker 3 (32:15):
Doc, I appreciate it. Thank you, Austin. Oddly enough, that
was that's the doctor who delivered me. Pretty cool that
first question. No, I would not give up Joe Burrow
for anything. It is so hard to come across a
franchise quarterback in this league. I would not give up
Joe Burrow for any amount of first round picks. Would

(32:35):
you no for Brendan Soarsby. That question's tough because I
would have to see how he finishes the year. If
he struggles finishing the year, that would be two years
in a row where he has struggled down the stretch.
But if he picks it back up and finishes the
year strong, I would ask the question, who else better

(32:55):
could you get? I don't think that is out there,
so I would, in my opinion, again, because quarterback makes
this go, I would do everything I could to keep
renting Sortsman.

Speaker 4 (33:04):
By the way, Soresby talking to the media right now.
He says his ankle is in good shape. He got
rolled up on against Arizona, but it sounds like he's
good to go for b Why there we go?

Speaker 2 (33:14):
What's up, Maso?

Speaker 5 (33:17):
What's going on? Boys? How are we doing today?

Speaker 2 (33:19):
You tell me?

Speaker 5 (33:20):
Well, unfortunately, Tony, I just got a text for Mali.

Speaker 2 (33:24):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (33:25):
There's a little protest on the beer pong tournament for
an elbow infraction. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
I figured that would be coming at some point.

Speaker 5 (33:33):
Yeah, So I don't know, you might have to return
that leg lamp trophy. But speaking of protest. Was there
a protest by the UC student Sunday night or what.

Speaker 3 (33:45):
Yeah, I've seen I've seen a lot of this going around.
I don't know what's to blame right now, students are
in school. To my knowledge, it was one of the
weakest student sections I've ever seen. I have no problem
calling that out. Uh, students have to be better. They've
got to show up to basketball games. I agree.

Speaker 5 (34:04):
Okay, that's I was going to ask your stance on that,
and you can chime in if you want. But yeah,
I'm like, it should never be at least seventy five percent,
you know, it should be always seventy five percent full.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
Yeah, I don't understand, especially like experience, in my opinion,
I get as well, Like if it's Thanksgiving or Christmas
break and students are just gone, but classes are in
session right now. It's a Sunday at six o'clock. How
are more things?

Speaker 2 (34:31):
That's the issue? Sunday at six.

Speaker 3 (34:33):
But it's also like it, But it's also like, enrollment's
never been higher at the University of Cincinnati. How are
you not filling that with two hundred students? As crazy
to No, I get it, I get it. I'm just
assuming that the games day and time is probably the biggest.

Speaker 6 (34:46):
Reason why, right, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (34:48):
I saw some different people saying, you know, it's Mount
Saint Mary's.

Speaker 6 (34:51):
Too, and I shouldn't matter care who the opponent is.

Speaker 5 (34:54):
Yeah, it shouldn't matter the opponent. It shouldn't matter. You know.
Everybody was saying, well, the team has been terrible for
seven years, haven't been to a you know, NCAA tournament.
It doesn't matter. You're only in college for four years.
Live it up. Yeah, go there, enjoy it, Go to
every sporting event that you can, and stop sitting on
your phones and your dorm rooms.

Speaker 2 (35:13):
Go come ont preach, all right?

Speaker 5 (35:16):
Anyway, Also onto the Bengals. I heard something yesterday which
was kind of funny. So if you go to a
restaurant for thirty some odd years and the food is
absolutely garbage, would you still keep going to that restaurant?

Speaker 2 (35:34):
Probably?

Speaker 5 (35:34):
Not? Okay, Then why do Bengals fans keep putting up
with this crap? It's stupid, it's it's trash what they
put out there year in and year out.

Speaker 6 (35:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (35:45):
I think that's the analogy is sports is just very
unique because because your team can duck for years and
years and years. But man, you keep on going, you
keep buying their gear, you keep coming back. But if
you go to a restaurant and you're and you get
a bad play of food, you're probably not even going
back to a second time. Sure, it's just it kind

(36:08):
of struck. It was a funny analogy I heard on
Dan Patrick in this was like, yeah, that's yeah, that's
kind of an interesting one. So why, yeah, why do
we put ourselves through this misery? Because I'm at the
point where I'm not even mad anymore. Like I don't
get mad when they win or lose, or when they lose.
I'm at apathy. I'm apathetic, like I don't even care.

Speaker 3 (36:28):
Yeah, And that's that's the dangerous point, Maso, thank you,
brother yep By. That's the dangerous part is when people
stop caring. I would say to that analogy, there are
a lot of other restaurant options. There are a lot
of other choices that you could go to to eat.
There's not as many sporting teams locally that you can
pull for, and there's just something about sports that does
drag you in. And for this organization, they teased you.

(36:52):
You know, they went to the super Bowl, they went
to back to back AFC title games, and now you
have that taste. And I would equate it to the
opp I said Austin. I would equate it to going
somewhere and you get a taste of something really good
and then you keep trying to chase that to find
that high again. And I feel like that's what fans
are doing constantly with their sporting teams.

Speaker 4 (37:10):
I get the restaurant analogy, and it does make sense.
But you know, May says right, if you don't like
a place, you can stop going. And the NFL is
no different. If you don't want to be a fan
of a team anymore, no one's forcing you to be
a fan of a team, which is why I think
the analogy of marriage fits better, because you've made a
commitment at some point in your life.

Speaker 2 (37:31):
This is my team.

Speaker 4 (37:32):
This is who I'm gonna root for, This is who
I'm gonna be a fan of, This is who I'm
going to live and die with. And there are times
where they're gonna make you mad, but you committed to them, right, Yeah,
there are times when you're gonna sleep on the couch,
but you committed to them, you know, And I think
that is the more apt comparison, but there's also an
out there too, and so if you choose to do that,

(37:56):
you're allowed to do that. And plenty of fans over
the the course of time have done that.

Speaker 3 (38:01):
Yeah, can I can? I just I got a text
from a good buddy of mind, and he makes a
good point, because can we just in a in a
nutshell think about what Maso's call was just about. Did
he criticize fans for not going to UC games and
then push back on fans for supporting the Bengals? Correct,
So we're just going on a circle, which come on

(38:23):
which organization you see basketball.

Speaker 2 (38:26):
Which hasn't been to a tournament in seven years.

Speaker 4 (38:28):
Or Cincinnati Bengals football over the last twenty five years
has been better? Well, I mean take over the last
seven years. I didn't ask that part of the question.
I asked twenty five twenty five, which has been probably
still the Bengals. Okay, but I think I mean that
is I gotta call my guy masa out.

Speaker 2 (38:48):
I mean, if it's shaken with your right and holding
a rocket.

Speaker 3 (38:51):
Yeah, it's it's the same thing you want to Well,
fans need to show up. And now it's coming from
a I know it comes from a point in love
with Maso because I believe Austin in Maso's time at
I won't share his college.

Speaker 2 (39:04):
I believe he was years in college.

Speaker 5 (39:06):
I was.

Speaker 3 (39:06):
I believe he was banned from going to certain sporting
events in college because not surprise, he's a little bit
over the top.

Speaker 4 (39:11):
Maybe there's too many Maso's that you see. Maybe, I mean,
I think it's a little bit different to have Maso's
back here. I think it's a little bit different if
you're a college student. Yeah, enjoy that experience. That's a
little bit.

Speaker 3 (39:22):
Yeah, he wasn't. He wasn't criticizing fans. He said to students.

Speaker 4 (39:26):
Yeah, and for especially so many of them live on campus.
It's an easy trip, correct, So that I think, and
it's cheaper, you know, so that you know, in Maso's point,
I have his back.

Speaker 3 (39:38):
Around it on that well taken. Uh, we'll take a break,
we'll come back. We'll try to wrap up the hour
with a call or two before we get to Joe
Daniman and boy do we have a lot to talk
about with Joe All coming up next to ESPN fifteen
thirty Cincinnati Sports Station Thanks to Skyline Chile, sure.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
Welcome back.

Speaker 3 (40:02):
Since he three sixty, we are rolling along. It's our
number one. Joe Daniman is going to join us in
just a few minutes. We've got a ton to get
to as it relates to the Cincinnati Bengals. Before we
get to that, we'll try to wrap up these phone
calls here in our number one. Coop is calling in.
What's up, Coop?

Speaker 6 (40:20):
Hi? You buddy good?

Speaker 2 (40:21):
How are you pretty good?

Speaker 6 (40:24):
Uh?

Speaker 5 (40:25):
Pimp?

Speaker 2 (40:25):
How are we living so?

Speaker 5 (40:27):
Coop?

Speaker 6 (40:28):
All right?

Speaker 10 (40:29):
Hey?

Speaker 5 (40:31):
An interesting.

Speaker 11 (40:34):
Connection here is during the Payton era.

Speaker 5 (40:37):
I was in Indianapolis and.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
Bill Pollian was the GM.

Speaker 11 (40:43):
Bill Pollian was out front and center on everything.

Speaker 5 (40:48):
They had a weekly calling show.

Speaker 11 (40:51):
Bill Pollian would take calls from local fans calling in.
He ran interference for everything. He wanted the coaches to coach,
and he would control everything else.

Speaker 2 (41:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (41:05):
Now maybe was a little over the top. Now the
coaches would get up and give a weekly press conference,
but he was out front and center. He was answering
all the questions for the organization, not the head coach. Coaches, coach,
the GM handles everything else.

Speaker 5 (41:25):
Did it seemed to work?

Speaker 6 (41:26):
It worked?

Speaker 5 (41:26):
Well?

Speaker 2 (41:28):
Yeah, Coop, that's a great point. We appreciate the phone call.

Speaker 3 (41:31):
Look, I don't even think we're I'm not even asking
for that, obviously, Bill Pollian, on a weekly basis getting
up there and taking phone calls from listeners from Austin,
that would be like Duke Tobin coming on this show
once a week and taking calls he should He's welcome to.
He's more than welcome to. I'm not even asking for
that extent. But on a bye week, when your team

(41:53):
is spiraling in the wrong direction, you need to stand
up there and take some ownership. As you said, it's
supposed to be a team. Everyone's supposed to have each
other's backs. Duke Tobin last week essentially sat back Austin
and watched and listened to Zach Taylor have to answer
for all of his mistakes and didn't think too say,

(42:17):
you know what, I gotta put this to bed. I
got to go talk that to me. And as you
mentioned earlier, that to me is a little bit of
a character issue. That should not be the case. Something
should eat away at you so much to say, and
I'm done letting this guy take the fall for me.
I'm done listening to him had to answer for my

(42:39):
mistakes and to the time, yet that's not been the case. John,
last call here to wrap it up.

Speaker 12 (42:46):
What's up John, Good afternoon, fellas. I think this all
leads back to something you touched on yesterday, the lack
of sense of urgency in the organization.

Speaker 2 (42:55):
I mean, your owner's.

Speaker 5 (42:56):
Ninety one years old.

Speaker 12 (42:57):
If I make it to ninety one years old, I'm
only buying green bananas.

Speaker 5 (43:00):
I'm not buying green bananas.

Speaker 12 (43:02):
Actually I'm buying yellow bananas or maybe brown bananas, because
who knows how long it's gonna last. But you just
look at Duke Tobin and can you believe this? Of
one hundred and twenty four professional sports franchises in North America,
he's the second longest tenured executive. The only one that's
been in their job longer is Brian Cashman with the
New York Yankees. Right two World Series with Brian Cashman.

(43:23):
There so lack of urgency white throughout the entire organization,
So it permeates down to the coaches, the players. It's
kind of more of a country club atmosphere that there's
going to be no repercussions. The other thing too, I
think one of the callers touched on this yesterday, you know,
for ten fifteen years ago, they were a bad boy Bengals, right,
Chris Henry pac Man, Jones, Bontest Burfect. Has the organization
done a one eighty and just wants to draft high

(43:44):
character guys like Demetrius Knight.

Speaker 2 (43:46):
Seems like a great guy.

Speaker 12 (43:48):
He's already a dad, was working as uber driving a
support his family.

Speaker 2 (43:51):
I want that guy to be my son in law.

Speaker 12 (43:53):
I don't know if I wanted to be.

Speaker 5 (43:54):
My football player.

Speaker 13 (43:55):
So you know, they've done like a flip of like
no more questionable car because we want just nice guys
and they may not be really good football players. So
a lot of that is from thirty thousand feet away.

Speaker 3 (44:07):
Yeah, no, there's a point that John, thank you for
the call. As always, there was a point Austin where
it felt like it shifted to where they were wanting
high character guys and captains right of successful teams. And again,
that's good to have on your team. Sometimes that doesn't
equate to the best football player, and I think you

(44:27):
have to find a balance between the two.

Speaker 2 (44:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (44:29):
I think they did that for a couple of years
and built what they thought was a good culture and
then deviated from that a little bit with some picks,
but the culture was so strong that you thought you
could deviate from that.

Speaker 2 (44:40):
Yes, that's my point.

Speaker 4 (44:41):
Zach Jackson Carmen was one of those selections that you
started to deviate. Jermaine Burton has been one of those
selections that you start to deviate, and those picks haven't
worked out. Now some of the high character picks haven't
worked out either. It's not an exact science, but there's
been a little bit of both in recent years, and

(45:02):
it makes me wonder if they'll go back towards that
type of process when drafting some.

Speaker 3 (45:08):
It takes a little tinkering and you've got to figure
you've got to figure out the most successful way, because
it hasn't been what's happening as of late. Joe Danaman
